Top 4 airlines serving from detroit to o'hare intl.

Food service was bare-bone. Better bot to have any at all rather than hand out premade coffees and cookies to random few passengers.

Had assistance at airport getting from arrivals gate to departure gate; I couldn't have managed without that extra help. Thank you Delta.

They charge me for the luggage which is was included on the ticket

More space in the cabin. The guy in front of me leaned his seat back and I felt he was sitting in my lap.

Was a great smooth flight from Detroit to San Diego.

Late flight, always blaming the flight crew, stale almonds, pushy people. Why don’t they have the people sitting in the back board first? So much easier getting through an empty plane! Duh!!

As we lined up to board they gave our plane to a flight going to Newark. So then we got delayed until they could find another plane. Flight crew was ok. I’m assuming since it’s a shorter flight they only offered water and coffee.

Food could have been better. A little more leg room would have been appreciated.

long flights are never truly comfortable but the airline did their best. crew was great and the flight was safe.

Seats not assigned during check-in and got last non-reclining seats next to rest room :-(

Good movies, iffy pay WiFi, food ok- on time though and that was great!

Awful…flight was delayed more than 12hrs, missed all connections to Fort Wayne, IN, had to get flight to another city 2 hours from my destination, flight was again delayed by 40 mins because they did not have enough fuel, again missed a connection, finally arrived in Indiana at 11pm…but before my 2 hour drive home, ay, no Five That Our Luggage Never Made On The plane and Still In Chicago

Boarding was friendly and quick. While the plane model was older with no live tv, the entertainment was full of movies and tv shows. All food was available. Pilots were very communicative with status of the flight. Flight landed on time.

The Palm Springs to Chicago O’Hare was on Time and Palm Springs airport is easier navigate. As our connection was only an approximately 50 minutes, we asked staff for insights for the Chicago airport in terms of transferring into the other terminal from which our flight left, and they were unhelpful. However, the United App was very helpful in terms of notifications and even providing directions. The Chicago to Detroit flight was significantly delayed which we all know does happen. However, there were very few updates or notifications as to why this was happening when we would actually arrive. It took nearly 30 minutes for bags to make it to baggage claim. We arrived nearly 1 hour late on a 40 minute flight.

Flight cancelled due to fog. No other flights available for 36 hours. Directed by United to book passage on another carrier, and submit receipts for reimbursement. Did that. United now states they will not reimburse. Currently out 2 grand.

The flight was delayed by 4 hours !!!!! It was very uncomfortable , and they told us only one our before departure

The flights from Ottawa to Albuquerque went smoothly enough though on on flight they didn't have how water for coffee or tea and on another there there was no ice. The return flights from Albuquerque were delayed by mechanical problems on both flights. Ottawa was a ground crew maintenance issue.

The male air hostess was rude and didn’t provide good customer service. Didn’t even offer me a drink

The staff was phenomenal. I can’t think of anything that could be better. Will be flying with UA again

Nothing bad to say about the actual crew or airline. It was nice to have a complimentary FULL can of soda, as well as a snack. Blankets and earbuds were also provided at no cost for this red eye flight. I especially appreciated the free WiFi and movie selection with the Bluetooth option. It helped the flight pass more quickly. No matter who you fly, boarding and disembarking are always SUCH a pain. As I mentioned, this is on the passengers and not the crew!!

The only problem experienced was a ground stop in Chicago due to weather. But the crew handled everything professionally. They prioritized rebooking those passengers who had connecting flights and then deplaning the other passengers. When the hold was lifted, they efficiently re-boarded all the passengers so that we could depart before our departure limit expired.

Our second leg to Jackson WY was unable to land due to weather. We were flown back to Dallas after stopping in SLC. We were given hotel rooms and vouchers. We were told that we would be back on the same plane in the morning. Instead we were given a different flight with different seats. Not a good experience. No one knew what was going on.

Turn on the heat. Flight was way too cold from Arizona to Chicago.

Perfect flight. On time departure and early arrival. Smooth flight.

Overall pleasant was delayed and caused transportation issue when landing

The arriving flight was a few minutes late, but the gate crew helped to deplane and board our outgoing flight quickly and efficiently. We were able to depart quickly and arrive at ORD almost at the posted time. Great job.

Nothing, flight was supposed to leave at 758 am. My flight didn’t leave until 430 pm. Spent the whole day at the airport.

Despite a bumpy flight the pilot was great. The rest of the crew on the other hand couldn’t care less if a passenger would colapse and die. Horrible service, robot like, lifeless…

Biggest issue was original flight canceled and booked to another flight 6 hours earlier and received no notification

It was great. It was just a commuter so I splurged on first class and it was wonderful. Wish all seats were this spacious. Enjoyed it and will do it again.

Every thing was fine ,low price, easy on time ,clean, good staff, really no issues

Cancelled my flight , currently stuck in Houston and will likely miss my cruise

Had to board plan 2x due to lack of security check after 1st boarding

Miserable. The crew was rude, the flight was delayed 5 hours for mechanical reasons and then “weather” even though other planes were leaving.

They kept Changing the flight times. It was delayed several times and at one point it was supposed to depart at 3.40am! At which point we ended up staying overnight and booked long a separate United flight for early morning departure. The spirit flight then got moved up and left at 1.30 in the morning when it was supposed to leave at 9.40pm the night before.

Flight was delayed...not horribly late. Just before push back engine shut down for a quick replacement item that took about five minutes. After that, everything was smooth and the pilot was able to make up time in the air so that our arrival time was not too far off the original anticipated arrival time.

Only inflight purchases for food and water. Nothing comes with ticket price. Have to purchase bags, food...

The flight was delayed almost two hours on the front end, and an hour on the backend once we landed and waited for a gate to open up. We were told to remain in our seats during that whole delay and I had to go to the bathroom badly. I was unable to hold it and was forced to urinate in my pants while in my seat. I then had to sit in it until we finally deboarded and I was able to change my clothes.

Passengers play their phones so everyone can hear them. No one tells them to use earbuds. Very annoying and unenjoyable.

We waited an hour to get off of the plane

Three ways to get from Detroit to Chicago

Follow these insider tips for getting between the midwestern cities..

Elise Hofer Shaw

At just over 280 miles apart, getting between Chicago and Detroit can be easy—whether for a weekend getaway from one to the other or a combined Midwestern mega-hits trip that matches Chicago's jazz and comedy clubs with Detroit's Motown Museum . To help you travel between the two, we’ve rounded up the three best ways to get from Detroit to Chicago, whether you’re craving efficiency or a leisurely road trip.

Detroit to Chicago by car

Traffic driving into Chicago

Driving from Detroit to Chicago takes about 4.5 hours, and it’ll only cost you around $50 for premium gas and $16 for the Indiana East-West Toll Road and the Chicago Skyway tolls combined. You can avoid the Illinois tolls altogether by taking I-94 W all the way into Chicago, but know that you’ll face a ton of construction along the way—and miss driving over the Skyway’s famous steel-truss bridge, which spans the Calumet River.

If you want to break up the drive, there are some fun, family-friendly stops along the route. About 45 minutes west of Detroit, just past downtown Ann Arbor, MI , is The Petting Farm at Domino’s Farms , where you can get up close with cows, horses, pigs, sheep, llamas, and bunnies. The southernmost part of Lake Michigan, right before you hit the Indiana state border, also lends itself to a layover. Detour to charming beach towns like Sawyer , Harbert , Lakeside, Union Pier , and New Buffalo for lunch, antiquing, and sunbathing in spots like Warren Dunes State Park .

Midwesterners recommend making the drive from Detroit to Chicago during peak fall foliage in mid-October, when the leaves are changing from green to a beautiful array of red, amber, and gold. If you have to drive in the dead of winter, just be sure to pay attention to the road conditions and heed weather advisories.

Detroit to Chicago by plane

Terminal in the Detroit Metropolitan Airport

Another option is flying from Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) to Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW). The direct flight takes just over an hour and costs anywhere from $75 to $310. For the lowest fares, check Southwest, which offers some 70 Detroit-to-Chicago flights into Midway every week. You could also fly into Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) on airlines like American, Delta, and United, but locals attest it’s easier and quicker to use Midway (it’s only a 30-minute drive to downtown Chicago, whereas O’Hare is about an hour depending on traffic).

Once you land, know that there will be a steady stream of curbside cabs, Ubers, and buses at both Midway and O’Hare. Or you can take the CTA train like a Chicagoan.

Detroit to Chicago by train

The Great Hall at Chicago's Union Station

If time is on your side, take the Amtrak train from Detroit to Chicago. The Wolverine, as it’s been lovingly called since the ’70s, costs between $40 and $65 and takes approximately six hours and 18 minutes. It runs from Chicago to Pontiac, MI three times a day in both directions, stopping in Ann Arbor and Detroit, and can be a lovely way to travel. Just keep in mind that the Wolverine is notoriously late, so it’s not the best choice if you’re in any sort of rush.

New Downtown Detroit bus that goes directly to airport costs less than $10

Service to run all day, every day.

Cassidy Johncox , Senior News Editor

DETROIT – A new bus service is offering riders a direct route from Downtown Detroit to the Detroit Metro Airport for less than $10 one way.

On Monday, March 25, the Detroit Air Xpress -- also called DAX -- launched its daily service that will take passengers on a nonstop ride to and from the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport in Romulus. It’s the first public bus service to offer Detroiters a direct shuttle to the airport.

Between 3:30 a.m. and 11 p.m. each day, DAX will make 16 round trips to DTW from downtown. Riders can board the bus at the stop on Washington Boulevard between Michigan Avenue and State Street. DAX can drop off travelers at both the Evans Terminal at the Ground Transportation Center, and the McNamara Terminal on the departures level of the airport.

Riders can purchase tickets in advance online for $6 one way. Tickets are also available at the door for $8 one way.

Several Detroiters told Local 4 that they’re excited about an affordable option for airport transportation -- especially when ride-hailing services can easily cost five-times as much as DAX. See more reactions in the video down below.

The bus service will run every single day including holidays, officials said. The bus itself includes luggage storage, charging ports and Wi-Fi.

DAX is a pilot service brought by the Regional Transit Authority. The RTA Family of Services include other public transportation options like the QLine, D2A2, and MoGo.

MLB: Milwaukee Brewers at New York Mets

The Detroit Tigers opened up their 2024 Major League Baseball campaign last weekend with a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox in the Windy City thanks to some solid pitching and some clutch hitting. The strong start has the fanbase amped for what could be a magical summer for the Olde English D.

Next up, AJ Hinch’s team travels to the Big Apple to take on the New York Mets at Citi Field for a three-game midweek matchup. While the visitors enter the week with a perfect 3-0 mark, the home team has a reciprocal 0-3 record to show for so far.

Below is a look at the pitching matchups for the Tigers at Mets which gets started on Monday night in Queens, New York.

Detroit Tigers (3-0) at New York Mets (0-3)

Times (ET): Monday : 7:10 p.m.; Tuesday : 7:10 p.m.; Wednesday : 7:10 p.m.

Place: Citi Field, Queens, New York

SB Nation Site: Amazin’ Avenue

Game 4 Pitching Matchup (2023)

Game 4 : RHP Reese Olson (0-0, 0.00) vs. LHP Sean Manaea (0-0, 0.00)

Reese Olson is first up on the mound for Detroit this week as the 24-year-old looks to build on his successful rookie campaign in 2023. The right-hander started 18 of his 21 appearances, holding his opponents to a 1.12 WHIP and logging a 111 ERA+, while showing other signs of brilliance along the way. The sophomore threw 14 2 ⁄ 3 innings this spring — with four of five coming as starts — logging a 3.68 ERA with 14 strikeouts and four walks over that stretch.

Sean Manaea takes the bump on Monday night for the Mets in his first appearance on an East Coast team after spending his career out in California, playing six years with the Oakland Athletics before spending a season with the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants , respectively. It has yet to be seen how the change of scenery affects the 32-year-old, but he can usually be counted on to throw a lot of innings. The southpaw logged 16 2 ⁄ 3 innings this spring for a 3.24 ERA, striking out 21 while walking four in four starts.

Game 5 Pitching Matchup (2023)

Game 5 : RHP Casey Mize (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Adrian Houser (0-0, 0.00)

Casey Mize gets set for his first MLB appearance since 2022 on Tuesday after sitting out nearly two seasons recovering from Tommy John as well as back surgery. The good news is that the 26-year-old was reported to have increased his fastball velocity during spring training as he ramps up his arm strength for full-time duty. The former first-overall pick threw 20 1 ⁄ 3 innings this spring — with five of his six appearances starts — putting together a 2.20 ERA along with a 1.14 WHIP, striking out 20 while walking nine.

Adrian Houser, much like Manaea, is making his first appearance with the Mets after spending all seven years of his big league career with the Milwaukee Brewers . The 31-year-old put up solid overall numbers in his final year with the Brew Crew, though his WHIP — which has long been his Achilles heel — was an elevated 1.39, demonstrating a wont to allow baserunners. The veteran posted a 5.25 ERA this spring stretching over 12 innings (four starts), along with a surprising 0.83 WHIP and 14 strikeouts against one walk; two home runs and nine total hits really hurt him, however.

Game 6 Pitching Matchup (2024)

Game 6 : LHP Tarik Skubal (1-0, 0.00) vs. LHP Jose Quintana (0-1, 3.86)

Tarik Skubal gets his second start of the season on Wednesday after a sterling effort on opening day for Detroit. The 27-year-old ace brought a five-pitch arsenal into the game against the ChiSox, with the four-seam fastball averaging 96.6 mph, while also employing his changeup, sinker, slider and knuckle curve, respectively, to keep the hitters off balance.

Jose Quintana is also making his second start of the 2024 campaign, albeit with much different results than Skubal in his first time out. The 35-year-old gave up way too many baserunners against Milwaukee, who managed to plate a pair of runs on him thanks to a pair of hits and walks, plus a dinger; he did strike out four batters in 4 2 ⁄ 3 frames.

Series Outlook: Tigers could sweep another

The Mets have some beef in their batting order so the Tigers pitchers cannot get too loose against these guys, especially the likes of home run thumper Pete Alonso. The pitchers, on the other hand, while are better on paper than the last trio are beatable if Detroit can get guys on base. Asking for another sweep — especially on the road — to open the season might be a bit unreasonable, but do not be surprised if the Motor City Kitties at least win the series.

Detroit Tigers complete Opening Day with 1-0 win against Chicago White Sox

Updated on: March 28, 2024 / 6:52 PM EDT / CBS/AP

The Detroit Tigers are starting the 2024 season off with a victory after beating the Chicago White Sox 1-0 on Thursday.

Pitcher Tarik Skubal and three relievers combined to retire the final 17 batters. The White Sox did not advance past first base and wasted a terrific start by Garrett Crochet.

Javier Báez singled and scored on Andy Ibáñez's sacrifice fly in the third. The Tigers finished with six hits.

Skubal (1-0) picked up right where he left off last year. The 27-year-old left-hander struck out six without a walk in his first opening-day start, after going 4-0 with a 0-90 ERA in his final five outings a year ago.

Shelby Miller pitched a perfect seventh. Andrew Chafin worked 1 1/3 innings before Jason Foley earned the save by striking out Yoán Moncada and Luis Robert Jr.

Crochet (0-1) tossed six sparkling innings in his first professional start, allowing one run and five hits. The 24-year-old left-hander struck out eight and walked none.

Crochet, who has 72 career relief appearances for the White Sox, got the nod for the opener after former ace Dylan Cease was traded to San Diego two weeks ago.

Deivi García worked the seventh. Michael Kopech pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth when he struck out Matt Vierling. But the White Sox opened on a familiar note coming off a 101-loss season.

The Tigers will take on the White Sox again on Saturday and Sunday. The team's home opener is scheduled for April 5 against the Oakland Athletics.

Detroit Tigers Opening Day vs. Chicago White Sox: Starting lineup, game time, TV info

Can you feel it? Can you smell it? Can you hear the crack of the bat? Ladies and gentlemen, regular-season baseball is back.

The wait is over and after a long offseason of building expectations, the Detroit Tigers begin their chase for the American League Central on Thursday against the Chicago White Sox.

It was a competitive spring training camp for the Tigers, with many battles across the roster, especially amongst the pitchers. Matt Manning, who made his MLB debut back in 2021, was optioned to Triple-A Toledo in a tight starting pitching battle . And we still don't officially know who the Tigers' Opening Day third baseman will be, although it will likely be Gio Urshella after the team signed him to a one-year, $1.5 million deal in the offseason.

The Tigers finished up spring training Tuesday with a 3-3 tie against the Tampa Bay Rays and then traveled to Chicago to prepare for the regular-season opener. While the Tigers may not be getting the benefit of starting the season at the friendly confines of Comerica Park, they do get a fairly manageable opponent.

The White Sox finished last year 61-101, one of just four teams to finish with 100 losses last year (along with fellow AL Central members, the Kansas City Royals) and also traded their best starting pitcher, Dylan Cease, to the San Diego Padres .

REQUIRED SKUBAL READING: How Detroit Tigers' Tarik Skubal matured into an Opening Day ace

With Cease no longer rocking the pinstripes, the White Sox are rolling with lefty Garrett Crochet, who has never made an MLB start in his three-year career. Crochet split time between the White Sox and the minor leagues last year after getting sent down for a rehab assignment because of left shoulder inflammation. The former first-round pick is still just 24 years old and is 6-feet-6 and throws absolute gas. Crochet gave up just three earned runs across 12⅔ innings pitched in spring training while making two starts. The lefty is bursting with potential, but we'll see if the Tigers can get to him as he fights through the Opening Day nerves, which also happens to coincide with his first ever MLB start.

Meanwhile, the Tigers will have an equally nasty but much more proven Opening Day starter in Tarik Skubal. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch didn't waste much time in naming Skubal the starter this spring training after he spent his first healthy offseason in a while sharpening his arsenal. Skubal didn't make his debut last season until July 4 but he looked like a potential Cy Young candidate during stretches, especially in the final month of the season when he gave up just three runs over five starts and was named the AL's Pitcher of the Month. The hype train has been building all offseason, and Thursday is the first chance for Skubal to prove he's the real deal.

Here's what you need to know about Thursday's Tigers vs. the White Sox game, including the TV channel, streaming info, weather report and starting pitchers.

Maps of the April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

By Jonathan Corum

On April 8, the moon will slip between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow across a swath of North America: a total solar eclipse.

By cosmic coincidence, the moon and the sun appear roughly the same size in the sky. When the moon blocks the glare of the sun, the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, will be briefly visible.

Below are several maps of the eclipse’s path as well as images of what you might experience during the event.

Where Can I See the Total Eclipse?

The eclipse will begin at sunrise over the Pacific Ocean, then cut through Mexico and cross the United States from Texas to Maine. Most of North America will see a partial eclipse, but viewers within the deepest shadow — a band sliding from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada — will experience a total solar eclipse.

Viewers inside the path of the total eclipse may notice a drop in temperature , a lull or shift in the wind , the appearance of bright planets in the sky, and the quieting of birds and other wildlife.

Many cities lie inside the path of the total eclipse, as shown below, the width of which varies from 108 miles to 122 miles.

The sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, is normally hidden by the sun’s glare. These tendrils and sheets of gas, heated to a million degrees Fahrenheit or more, are in constant motion and shaped by the sun’s swirling magnetic field.

What Colors Should I Wear?

As the sky darkens, light-sensitive cells in human eyes become more sensitive to blue and green hues than to reds and oranges. This shift in color perception is known as the Purkinje effect , after a 19th-century Czech scientist, and is typically seen at twilight.

People watch the 2017 total eclipse at Southern Illinois University.

To take advantage of the Purkinje effect, wear green clothes or a contrasting combination of greens and reds. Blue-green colors (shorter wavelengths) will appear brighter, while red colors (longer wavelengths) will appear to recede into the darkness.

What If I Miss It?

The next two total solar eclipses in the United States won’t occur until 2044 and 2045 . But eclipse chasers might catch one in 2026 in Greenland, Iceland and Spain; 2027 along the coast of Northern Africa; 2028 in Australia and New Zealand; or 2030 across Southern Africa and Australia.

Coming to the NFL Draft? Here's how you can travel in and around Detroit

travel from detroit to chicago

This story has been updated to correct the fares for the Detroit Air Xpress bus and when the service started.

Detroit — In a little over a month, more than 300,000 people are expected to travel to the Motor City to see which players will be drafted by the NFL's 32 teams.

For many, getting around an unfamiliar town will be key to their experience — and whether they might come back. State and city transit officials are launching new services and planning to have all hands on deck to make getting around Campus Martius, Hart Plaza and the Monroe Street Midway as smooth as possible during the 2024 NFL Draft April 25-27.

Many of the transportation upgrades will be available to basketball fans visiting Detroit this weekend for NCAA Men's Sweet 16 and Elite Eight games Friday and Sunday at Little Caesars Arena.

Because Detroit sits within 300 miles of six other NFL cities — Buffalo, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Chicago and Pittsburgh — lots of football fans are likely to drive into town for the draft. That's why Detroit's draft organizers are pushing hard to ensure visiting fans can get around, get fed and get entertained amid the league's off-season extravaganza.

Sam Krassenstein, Detroit's chief of infrastructure, said the city is actively preparing for three groups of people coming into the city for the draft: Detroiters, suburban residents and everyone else.

"So we're expecting quite a large out-of-state contingent coming into the city potentially for the first time or for the first time in a long time, and figuring out how to move all these people is definitely something we're thinking a lot about," he said.

The city is working with public and private transportation providers like DDOT, SMART, the People Mover and the Regional Transit Authority to create "one cohesive strategy" for servicing customers, Krassenstein said.

"We're looking at where we have access parking, not just in the downtown, but kind of all over the broader core ... Wayne State, Eastern Market, up by Little Caesars Arena, over in Corktown and over on the east riverfront, to make it really easy for people to be able to come in, park and then hop on transit ... to be able to get into the downtown core," he said.

Using this "park-and-ride" strategy, city transportation planners will encourage visitors to park outside of the downtown area and take the QLine, People Mover or DDOT buses to get into downtown.

Krassenstein considers the strategy an opportunity "to showcase Detroit's transit experience and give exposure to nearby neighborhoods." He said the city would also be working with DDOT and SMART to make sure bus frequencies match peak-level demand.

"How do we keep transit going downtown during the event? Because we know the footprint is going to lock down a big part of downtown, and we still want people who are not coming to the event, but who have to get to the bus to get to their jobs ... (to) still be able to move downtown," Krassenstein said.

Local officials have said they expect the draft to generate hundreds of millions of dollars for the region .

Diane Cross, a spokesperson for MDOT, said workers will be doing mass cleanup and beautification efforts on the freeways leading to Detroit, specifically from Metro Airport and Chicago (Interstate 94) and Ohio (I-75). Most other road work will be halted in the days leading into the draft.

"We are holding off work as much as possible the week of the event. Specifically on routes downtown, but also the major freeways in the region heading into the city. There will be some projects already in construction that must remain," Cross said in an email. Construction will continue on U.S. 24 near Eight Mile and I-96/696 in Oakland County.

A new airport-to-downtown link

The Michigan Flyer bus line, which operates between East Lansing, Brighton, Ann Arbor and Metro Airport, added a pilot route from the airport to downtown Detroit earlier this week, giving travelers from outside Michigan a way to get to the NFL Draft.

"We've wanted to create this connection from downtown Detroit to the airport for several years. We were able to ... secure a carbon reduction grant to pilot the service," said Ben Stupka, the Regional Transit Authority's executive director.

A $2 million grant from the Federal Highway Administration’s Carbon Reduction Program and a $500,000 matching grant from the Michigan Department of Transportation is making it possible for the authority to operate, market and build shelters for the transportation project.

The Detroit Air Xpress will pick up riders on Washington Boulevard near State Street and drop them off at the airport's Warren Evans and McNamara terminals 16 times a day from 3:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. through March 2025. Cost will be $6-8 a trip.

"Clearly with the draft and March Madness ... Detroit is a regional and national event destination that just continues to grow as part of our local economy," Stupka said.

In addition, Ann Arbor area residents could use the D2A2 . This bus takes riders between Grand Circus Park in Detroit and the Blake Transit Center in Ann Arbor. One-way fares are $4 for seniors 65 and older, $6 online for those ages 2-64 and $8 for children and adults at the station.

Another option is to ride SMART's bus service from the airport's McNamara Terminal to Fort Street and Outer Drive in southwest Detroit and then catch a DDOT bus there to ride downtown. The cost is $2 for a four-hour pass and $5 for a 24-hour pass, which can be used on both services.

People Mover upgrades

When people arrive downtown, People Mover officials said the elevated fare-free train would be the best method of getting around the area as it will extend service hours for the 2024 NFL Draft.

Currently, two to three trains run about every seven minutes on a given day, and officials said their goal is to run four trains by the time of the event.

"We've turned off the fare gates — basically you just walk right through ... and already compared to last year in January, we saw about double the ridership, so so far we've seen some great returns there," said Robert Cramer, general manager of the Detroit Transportation Corp., which owns and operates the People Mover. "But obviously, that'll be something that really makes it easy for us to move lots of people conveniently and affordably through the whole draft weekend."

The corporation is using the NFL Draft as a "deadline to push forward improvements that will stick around," Cramer said.

Those include replacing the public announcement system and investing $5 million in security cameras and video messaging screens at the street and platform level. The screens will show train arrival times, information on upcoming events in Detroit, hours of operation, and messages about any delays or station closures.

"It will really provide a lot of real-time and highly visible information for people who want to use this system," he said. The station is also getting interactive video kiosks that will feature a map and information about nearby businesses and services.

Ahead of the draft, the People Mover trains will have new exterior wrappings and station interiors will be upgraded to LED lighting.

"I really think that that's a great positive part of downtown, so part of our goal is to make it even more visible and convenient, attractive, so that aesthetic can be that for even more people," Cramer said, adding that art has been added to the stations' interior and exterior ahead of the April event.

Park-and-ride QLine

QLine officials said they will relaunch their park-and-ride program on the NFL Draft weekend, allowing people to park their cars for $5 at Wayne State Parking Lot 12 on Woodward and ride the streetcar downtown.

The QLine will be impacted by event staging for the draft and will run a shorter route, possibly terminating at Campus Martius rather than at Congress Street, officials said. Outside of Little Caesars Arena, 'transit only' lanes on Woodward may be extended temporarily in both directions on Woodward.

During Taylor Swift's two Ford Field concerts in June 2023, the QLine saw about 11,000 riders daily — about 8,000 more than average. Dan Lijana, a spokesperson for the QLine, said they expect similar ridership during the draft and that the streetcar helps reduce traffic congestion.

Bikers, as well as passengers with accessibility and mobility needs, can use the QLine, which has level boarding.

"It's a way that both people who live in the direct service area obviously can move out and about during a special event but also people that are coming in either from the region or coming from out-of-town," Lijana said.

"It's a great way to see and experience the Woodward corridor and as a sort of gateway for visitors coming from out-of-town," he said. "There's been such a tremendous amount of residential investment and commercial investment in that corridor and you're sort of seeing that happen and just the vitality of people walking along the streets and on the sidewalks."

How did K.C. do it last year?

Donna Mandelbaum, spokesperson for the KC Streetcar Authority in Kansas City, said its streetcar was the main method of transportation for 2023 NFL Draft attendees.

"The NFL Draft actually occurred on the streetcar route at the at the southern end of our line at Union Station," Mandelbaum said. "And because of security purposes, dictated by NFL, we could not bring passengers on our streetcar into the NFL Draft site at Union Station, so what we had to do was truncate our service and end at the stop just previous of Union Station ... and all of our passengers had to get off the streetcar there and then there was a walking map and paths that they had to walk to get into one of the entrance points of the draft."

In addition, the authority added two additional streetcars — going from three to five streetcars running every six minutes down the two-mile route — and extended service an extra hour for the three-day event.

"We did a lot of extra work to make sure that people could still use the streetcar even though you couldn't take it to the end of the line. And it was super beneficial," she said, adding that there were more than 57,000 passenger trips on the streetcar during the draft.

"Our daily average ridership during that time of year is generally around 5,000 per day. And maybe a three-day weekend would be maybe 15-20,000 passenger trips, so to go to 57,000 in three days is huge," she said.

Ways to ride downtown

  • The People Mover fare-free train travels around downtown Detroit through Lafayette Park, Hart Plaza and the riverfront.
  • The QLine fare-free streetcar offers Wi-Fi capabilities and travels between Grand Boulevard and downtown on Woodward. Riders can park their cars for $5 at Wayne State Parking Lot 12 at 6050 Woodward, one block from the QLine’s Amsterdam stop. The route has stops downtown and in Midtown and New Center.
