Lucky Ali is the second of the eight children of the popular Bollywood comedian, Mehmood. His mother Mahelaka, was part Bengali and part Pathan, the sister of a popular Indian actress of the 1960s – Meena Kumari. The Bollywood actress and dancer, Minoo Mumtaz, is his paternal aunt. He attended Manekji Cooper (Kindergarten) (Juhu), Bombay Scottish School in Mumbai, Hampton Court in Mussoorie, St. George's College, Mussoorie Manor House ( Barlowganj Mussoorie) and the Bishop Cotton Boys' School, Bangalore. Ali is known to be a practicing Muslim. Ali states his favourite is the Quran being recited. he says that religion is but, a personal regimen that a spiritual seeker uses to connect to his Creator. His first wife was Meaghan Jane McCleary (a New Zealander), who has acted in the video O Sanam from his first album Sunoh. Ali has two children from his first wife – Ta'awwuz and Tasmia. His second wife is Inaya (Anahita-a parsi girl). He has two children from his second wife, Sara and Raiyan. He was married a third time in 2010. His third wife was a British model and former Miss England Kate Hallam and the couple have a son named Dani Lucky and his father shared a tempestuous relationship. Mehmood was a very busy actor in 1960s and 70s, and remained away from home for his shoots. Once, around the age of four when Lucky first returned from Boarding school Mehmood and the entire family had come to receive Lucky after 10 months in Boarding school, at the airport, Lucky didn't recognize his father and but on seeing him said, "He's the film comedian Mehmood!" Lucky lived away from his family in a boarding school up in the foothills of the Himalayas in Mussoorie. Lucky's tryst with marijuana led Mehmood to write the script of the movie Dushman Duniya Ka (Enemy of the World). The movie stars Ali's youngest brother, Manzoor. It is the story of the drug abuse of a young man called Lucky. In the end the young man kills his mother, destroys everything around him and is then killed by his father. Lucky differed with his father's vision and did not act in the movie. "I felt the story lacked hope," he said. However he sang his first song for the film. Lucky's wanderlust has led him to many places and to try different professions. He has bred horses, worked on an oil rig off the coast of Pondicherry in South India, cleaned and sold carpets and is a farmer with a strong opinion on organic methods in farming. He is best known for his music, singing and acting.

The Lucky Ali interview | 'These songs are my way of coming to terms with life’s shortcomings'

Lucky Ali: ‘We like our music to be a ‘sing-along‘ kind of music that you could be able to play on guitar and sing it instead of arranging a grand environment’

Lucky Ali’s songs are like warm hugs that calm your inner chaos, and he is creating the same impact with his new single ‘Intezaar’. The pioneering Indian Pop legend, who has captured the imagination of music lovers across generations and geographical spreads for decades, has once again collaborated with his brother-in-law, composer Mikey McCleary, for his new track after their debut album Sunoh in 1996, which also launched Lucky into Indi-pop stardom.

Talking about the catalyst for this collaboration, Lucky says it was his son, who wanted to preserve and showcase his father’s music, and his nephew.

 “My children, Ta’awwuz Ali (eldest son) and Mezaan Ali (nephew) felt that we had a lot of music that needed to be expressed and released because most of the work was done and what they felt was that this was the right time to put out the music and not let it hang in there. They have been handling all my work now under Farmhouse Music” the husky-voiced singer-songwriter, composer and actor told Firstpost.

Lucky says that ‘ Intezaar’,  which is a part of a series of singles that they will be releasing this year. was first just a general tune and then when it was given to IP Singh (composer, sound-designer), his interpretation was of a ‘coming back of a situation’.

“…he told a story that way. But then in my process, I needed to connect it to something that walked along with that expression of Intezaar, which was Tamannah. So we incorporated Intezaar or Tamanna into the track and made it into a story about these two spaces getting together for a common purpose,” he said.

Mikey, on the other hand, spoke about his real challenge in this collaboration. “My idea was to stay true to the organic sound that Lucky and I created so many years ago and yet also to make the music composition and production sound modern and be accessible for a new younger generation of listeners," he said.

Lucky Ali brings back the nostalgia of the 90s with not just the soothing lyrics but also through short love stories.

_’_ Intezaar’ is also a song about a relationship.

When asked if Lucky connects deeply with love, loss, and belongings in real life too, the 63-year-old says, “You have to feel the words that you generate and it has to be comfortable enough to sing as well. The thoughts behind ( the song) are basically the thoughts that you touch upon and build into commonalities so yes, the functioning has been just the same.

“I haven’t changed anything drastically. Basically, we like our music to be a ‘sing-along‘ kind of music that you could be able to play on guitar and sing it instead of arranging a grand environment.”

For the singer, the songs in the album are his varied thoughts.

“These songs are my way of coming to terms with life’s limitations and shortcomings. In a way, making these songs is a healing process for me. That said, I want the listeners to make their own interpretations of the songs, I want them to make these lyrics and songs their own too,” said the acclaimed singer who has also dedicated the track to his fans.

Looking at his past works, Lucky Ali’s hit solos like ‘ Kabhi Aisa Lagta Hai’, ‘ O Sanam’, ‘Sunoh’ , and ‘Gori Teri Aankhein Kahe ’, still remain part of our playlist. Also, his Bollywood tracks ‘Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai’, ‘Na Tum Jaano Na Hum’ , and ‘ Ek Pal Ka Jeena’ were chart-toppers.

However, he led a very silent life over the past few years spending more time with his family. Many believed that he was thinking of retiring.

We asked Lucky the same questions and he beautifully answered saying that “the work I do can only happen only in those circumstances where you are just following your own path.”

“Music is something that is an expression. It’s like a language that you use, that you communicate with people. Music is such a language that everybody in the world understands and you don’t need drama so for me, it’s always been like that. I have always lived that kind of retired life,” he said.

The singer also says that “Whatever comes or whatever you gain out of it, that’s what you share with everybody else and move on.”

“I am not an educated musician in fact I don’t even know what I sing and why it happens,” said Lucky and added that he considers himself very fortunate to have the support that allows him to put everything together and then express it.

 “So yeah that’s my journey and for as long as it is there, It’s going to be like that. I have been retired for a very long time,” he said.

The singer also raised many eyebrows recently when his photographs of meeting Derek O’Brien of All India Trinamool National Congress (TMC), became viral. This soon started rumours that he may join politics.

 “Oh no, never,” Lucky said when asked if he is joining politics. However, he says that he “would like to help them achieve” good things as he “feels that they may be making mistakes.”

 “… but I also feel that it’s not my place to tell them because it’s the decision they made. There was a song called, ‘ We didn’t start the fire’ so I would like to help them put it out. If they need my help, I am happy to help them but definitely, I am not going to join. I have got my own journey” he sums up.

At a time when MTV ‘s Indipop spots had become a crowd favorite, BMG Crescendo launched Lucky Ali in 1996 with his album, Sunoh . Listeners embraced the singer-songwriter’s tonal quality and distinct musical style, propelling him to prominence as an Indipop icon during that period. Years later, we still love his songs, a reflection of nostalgia and times gone by.

“O Sanam “

“O Sanam” is remembered for its somber lyrics, soulful melody, and visuals featuring the singer himself. His portrayal of a man longing for his lover, with him wandering around in Egypt amid the pyramids, made the music video stand out. Ali is claimed to have funded the project himself after the music label declined due to concerns that the song would not be a hit. Indipop was a brand-new genre back then, and record labels were not ready to take chances. But the track went on to become a major success and is regarded as a timeless masterpiece.

“Dekha Hai Aise Bhi “

Ali’s compositions have a boho air to them, like a traveler’s intuition mixed with music. As is evident in most of his videos, travel plays a big role. He’s a wanderer with a guitar who enjoys venturing out and singing songs on the road while discovering new places. His tracks are reflective of his chilled-out personality that always makes us feel good. That same mood is portrayed in “Dekha Hai Aisa Bhi,” in which Ali travels around places (picturized in Arizona) while meeting new people and soaking in new experiences.

“Anjaani Rahon Mein “

“Anjaani Raahon Mein,” a beautiful composition from the album Meri Jaan Hindustan , was Ali’s ode to India’s 50th anniversary of independence. The song that encapsulates the sentiments of homecoming and returning to one’s roots featured the artist traveling across the country in search of a new direction in life.

“Tere Mere Saath “

Cruising around Havana, Cuba, in a vintage red-and-white Pontiac, Ali joined locals in dancing and grooving to this classic song from his third album Aks . The fabulous video perfectly complements the invigorating melody and emotional lyrics. It’s a lovely throwback to the good old days, and the soulful music, thought-provoking lyrics, and visuals make you grin.

“Kitni Haseen Zindagi “

The philosophy of this song is rooted in the ephemeral moments of life, love, and relationships that bring joy and pain. That is what life is, and life is worth living, as evidenced in the lyrics, “ Kitni haseen zindagi hai yeh/ Hoton pe jaise kahani hai/ Sadaa yahan kiska thikana hai/ Un ki rawani mein jaana hai/ Bahaaron ne har sou rang hai bikhairaa/ Rait ka sehra, ek pal ka ghera/ Ek din bikharnaa yahan .” Another interesting aspect of this composition is its folk flavor, conveyed through the fusion of a morchang (a Jewish harp) and guitar arrangement that strike the perfect chord with the heart and soul.

“Gori Teri Aankhen Kahe “

The title track from Ali’s self-composed studio album of the same name is a duet with Kavita Krishnamurthy, a love ballad dedicated to the gorgeous eyes of a girl and the messages they convey. The single, released in 2001, received appreciation for its unique soundscape. It continued gaining a lot more traction and popularity over time and is widely recognized as one of Ali’s most soulful renditions.

“Aa Bhi Ja A Bhi Ja “

Sur was good in terms of reality and heartfelt sentiments, and the singer (also the lead actor in the film) nailed the character of Vikramaditya, a weary music teacher. Throughout the story, the portrayal of fragile human emotions and vulnerabilities was well captured, coupled with heartfelt music that served as special effects. One can’t forget Ali and Sunidhi Chauhan’s timeless hit “Aa Bhi Ja Aa Bhi Ja” from the film, composed by none other than the phenomenal M.M. Kreem.

“Ek Pal Ka Jeena “

This OST from Kaho Na Pyar Hai was an instant hit. Ali’s intriguing vocals and Hrithik Roshan’s immaculate dance moves remain imprinted in memory. The song, styled and choreographed as a flamboyant club number, was a contrast in terms of its intense lyrics, speaking of life’s fleeting nature and the importance of living in the moment. Kudos to Ibrahim Ashq for injecting introspective words into a dance track.

“Na Tum Jano Na Hum “

Another notable highlight from Kaho Na Pyar Hai’s playlist is “Na Tum Jana Na Hum.” It’s a sluggish, soft romantic score with breathtaking views, a lovely dreamy couple, and Ali’s enchanting voice — the perfect mix for a perfect love song. It’s an evergreen Bollywood favorite from the early 2000s.

“Aahista Aahista “

Shreya Ghoshal and Ali’s mellifluous jamming in “Aahista Aahista” from Bachna Ae Haseeno is like music cascading like a stream, meandering through exotic locales and resonating with bliss. The composition, with breathy vocals, is sonically refreshing and effectively conveys the feeling of first love — innocent yet adventurous. The feel-good melody grows on one aahista aahista , just like the title of the song.

“Hairat “

This is a one-of-a-kind track from the film Anjaana Anjaani . Ali sang it and Vishal-Shekhar composed it. Hats off to the incredible composition, the musicians, the impressive arrangement, and Ali’s voice. In my opinion, the film was super stylish, the leads looked extremely attractive, and this song, in particular, was killer.

“Safarnama”

“ O Safarnama/ Sawaalon ka safarnama/ Shuru tumse, khatam tumpe safarnama/ O jisey dhoonda/ Zamaane mein, mujh hi mein tha/ O mere saare jawaabon ka safarnama ,” sings Ali in this track from the film Tamasha . The singer did an excellent job with his atypical style and distinctive vocals in this heartfelt composition by A.R. Rahman. A song about personal fulfillment while navigating the road of life, its verses strike a chord because they are so relatable.

I firmly believe Lucky Ali’s musical journey comes from providence, and his music went with the flow of time and life. The reclusive singer’s soul-searching finds an expression through his art form and I guess it is this that makes him stand out as an artist. We loved him then, love him now, and will continue to love him going forward.
