The Safari, manufactured by Tata Motors, is a renowned SUV known for its iconic status. It was initially introduced in 1998 and has undergone various updates since then.
Tata Motors has maintained the illustrious name ‘Safari’ by creating a contemporary monocoque front-wheel drive SUV. Essentially, it is a modified version of the Harrier, featuring a distinct design to incorporate a third row of seating.
This article offers an in-depth look at the features and innovations that make the upcoming Safari Classic a standout in its class.
2023 Tata Safari Classic 4×4
According to off-road enthusiasts and dedicated Safari fans, the latest generation of the Safari has taken on a more refined demeanor compared to its previous rugged and robust incarnation.
The original Safari was never afraid to immerse itself in dirt and mud, boasting a traditional ladder-frame chassis and a rear-wheel drive layout. In its Storme version, it even offered an optional 4X4 system by BorgWarner.
Wouldn’t it be intriguing if Tata Motors adopted a comparable approach and reintroduced the original Safari as the Safari Classic?
It’s an enticing proposition, isn’t it? Carwar has embraced this very idea and brought it to life in the form of a digital rendering.

During the previous Auto Expo, an exclusive edition of the Safari Storme was unveiled, sparking speculation about the potential return of the Safari 4×4 at the upcoming January 2023 Auto Expo.
The utilization of a 2.0L diesel engine sourced from Stellantis could inject new vitality into this classic SUV. The engine can be calibrated to deliver reduced power output but increased torque, catering to the SUV’s updated purpose. Additionally, Tata Motors has the option of utilizing the older 2.2L engine, now compliant with BS6 norms, which is presently reserved exclusively for commercial vehicles such as the recently launched Yodha 2.0.
However, it must be noted that this engine only produces 100 bhp, a significant decrease compared to the original Safari’s 148 bhp.

2021 Tata Safari Rendered As A 4×4 Off-Road SUV, Looks Splendid
The new-generation Tata Safari is a great family SUV, but it would have been much better if there was an off-road-spec variant on offer as well
The second-generation Tata Safari was launched in India in February of this year. Fans of the original were quick to point out that the new model didn’t have the same off-road chops as its predecessor. Tata does offer an ‘Adventure Persona’ variant of the SUV, but the lack of an All-Wheel-Drive option is upsetting for off-road enthusiasts.
Here, we have a digitally rendered image that shows us what the 2021 Safari would look like in a hardcore, off-road avatar. Created by Shoeb R Kalania, this model looks adventure-ready, thanks to all the changes and modifications it sports. At the front end, we see a blacked-out front grille with a new mesh design, and the front bumper gets a new silver-finished bash plate.
At the sides, the most noticeable features are the new blacked-out alloy wheels, shod with beefy all-terrain tyres. The SUV gets disc brakes on all wheels, along with sporty-looking red brake callipers. Side steps/rock sliders have also been added here. The door handles have been de-chromed and blacked-out, and the ORVMs get integrated turn signals and Piano Black finish.
A cargo box has been mounted on the roof rails, and an auxiliary LED light bar has been added as well. This digitally modified SUV also gets a custom olive green paint job, which looks absolutely marvellous. Needless to say, it would be wonderful if someone were to make a real-life version of this (Tata Motors, please take notes).
The 2021 Tata Safari is powered by a 2.0-litre, turbocharged, inline-4 diesel engine that belts out 170 PS and 350 Nm. Transmission options consist of a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox, both of which only send power to the front wheels. Tata Motors has confirmed that the OMEGA platform can support AWD as well as electrification, so the possibility of a 4×4 model and hybrid/plug-in hybrid version exists for the future.
Tata Safari is currently priced from Rs. 14.99 lakh to Rs. 21.81 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). In the Indian market, it competes against the likes of MG Hector Plus and Mahindra XUV500 (which will be replaced by XUV700 soon). The upcoming Hyundai Alcazar will also rival the Safari when it launches.

Take a Look at the Most Radical Off-Road RVs of All Time
Posted: December 21, 2023 | Last updated: December 21, 2023
Off-Road and Off-the-Grid
If you're planning on hitting the road in style — while also having the option of going completely off-road — a sturdy RV built for rough conditions is the only way to go. Whether you want to hunker down off-the-grid in the middle of a mountain wilderness or fend off the wintry chill in the off-season that would turn most motorhomes into iceboxes, these RVs, travel trailers, and custom cruisers are guaranteed to get you there and impress everyone you meet.
Prices and availability are subject to change.
Global Expedition Vehicles Safari Extreme 4X4 RV
GXV takes full-sized and medium-duty trucks and turns them into RVs that are designed to be expedition-worthy. This demo version, mated to an International 7300 extended-cab chassis, can hold 280 gallons of fuel — enough to go 2,500 miles on a tank, almost the entire length of the country. Not bad for a vehicle that, fully tricked out, weighs about 24,000 pounds. The cost? About $650,000 at base.
A Look Inside
The Safari Extreme’s 16-foot cabin isn’t super-long, but it’s plenty roomy for such luxuries as a leather dining area, granite countertops, stainless-steel Vitrifrigo refrigerator-freezer, and a full bathroom with shower. Another nice feature is the 52-inch window in the rear sleeping area, which allows commanding views of the world outside. There’s also a 3,200-watt diesel generator and a 600-watt solar array so you can always stay plugged in, no matter how far off the grid you roam.
Earthroamer XV-HD
With its 6.7-liter turbodiesel V-8 engine and four-wheel drive, this Ford F-750-based RV is designed to conquer the mountains or muddy wetlands. These custom conversions by Colorado-based Earthroamer really do put the “glam” in glamping: Each one costs $1.9 million , and not many have been made so far. Solar cells on the roof provide 2,100 watts of power, so much so that you don’t need a generator to power appliances and electronics like some RVs do.
In the market for an RV, an off-roader or another model? RVT.com and Camping World have a huge selection of new and used vehicles. Want to try before you buy? Check out RVshare for rental options.
The luxurious living space is big enough for six people and could be mistaken for a small condo. Highlights include a Bose surround-sound entertainment center, leather furniture, stainless-steel Bosch appliances, solid-surface counters, and wood cabinets. Radiant floor heating is a standard amenity on the XV-HD, so you can walk barefoot in the middle of snowbound Utah and keep your toes warm.

KiraVan Mountain
What happens when a former Disney “Imagineer” decides to create an RV for his 4-year-old daughter? You end up with the KiraVan, a concept vehicle built in 2014 by Bran Ferran to be the most kid-friendly, high-tech RV possible. This modified tractor-trailer is powered by a Mercedes Unimog U500NA with a six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine and, amazingly, it’s designed to go off-road. The company hasn’t disclosed the cost.
Earthcruiser Australia Explorer
Aussie custom camper manufacturer Earthcruiser starts with a diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz Unimog commercial truck. It can go 2,100 miles on a single 211-gallon tank of fuel. With all-wheel drive it can go just about anywhere, while its solar array keeps you in touch while off-grid. There’s also a weatherproofing option for extreme-weather travel. The company won’t say how much this custom build cost.

American Expedition Vehicles Jeep Wrangler JKU Outpost II
The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon already looks like a military-grade vehicle . Remove the rear doors and hatch, attach a custom-built camper shell, and it looks like it can survive the apocalypse. To complete the package, American Expedition Vehicles, a Michigan company, replaced the stock engine with a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine, modified the A580 transmission, and installed a heavy-duty lift, reinforced bumpers, and custom exhaust. It's not a mass-market vehicle , though.
This particular vehicle is a custom build, but there are plenty of creature comforts inside this iteration of the Outpost II to keep two adults happy. There’s a folding 80-inch sofa to relax on, a refrigerator that can be accessed from inside or out, a 4-gallon water heater, and gas-fired furnace.
FWC Hawk and Ram Power Wagon Truck Camper RV
The Hawk Pop-Up camper shell is designed to fit in the cargo bed of full-sized pickups. It’s a modest affair by RV standards, but when it’s mated to a serious four-wheel-drive truck such as a Ram Power Wagon with a V-8 engine, you can take your home away from home off road. What goes on the truck can cost anywhere from $23,495 to $52,995.
At just 6.5 feet long, a typical camper portion is tighter than some of the RVs on this list, but it’s enough for couples who don’t mind roughing it a bit. Features include a queen-sized bed in the loft over the cab, plus a small kitchenette, and dining area. Toilet and shower are optional (space is tight, after all).
Forest River Windjammer Arctic Wolf Package
At 35 feet long and 11 feet tall, the Windjammer is pretty big as RV trailers go, so once you reach your destination you’ll want to stay put for awhile. The Arctic Wolf winter package has got enough to keep you cozy if you decide to stick it out in a cold climate, including a floor-ducted furnace and thick, floor-to-ceiling insulation to keep you warm. Heated holding tanks prevent freezing and heavy-duty ventilation to fend off condensation. There are several models and options, but buyers can start by thinking about writing a $60,000 check and see how that feels.
Keystone Montana
Keystone says its Montana RVs are designed and tested to withstand zero-degree weather, making them a great choice for cold-weather camping. Don’t worry about your holding tanks, dump valves, and water lines freezing — Keystones have insulated and enclosed underbellies, floor insulation, double-layer fiberglass sidewalls, 12-volt electric tank heaters, and heated storage areas. Prices start at about $122,318 .
You could be forgiven for mistaking the interior of the Montana for a small luxury home. Buyers have multiple floor plans to choose from, with space-making slide-out seating and sleeping areas. Features include stainless-steel kitchen appliances, including a double-door fridge, as well as leather furniture, a washer-dryer hookup, a queen-sized bed, a full entertainment center, and a 35,000-BTU furnace to keep you cozy all winter long.

2024 Easter Jeep Safari concepts revealed
The annual Easter Jeep Safari is here and, as usual, the US off-road brand has rolled out a batch of unique concept vehicles that demand attention.
Unlike previous years, however, there’s no specific new model or technology bound for the production line, with Jeep instead opting to honour the past with a pair of retro-inspired concepts.
Accessories partner Mopar has also developed two new exhibition pieces designed to showcase what can be done with its genuine parts.
“Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah, is the perfect venue for new Jeep concepts, with more than 20,000 Jeep enthusiasts gathering each year to celebrate the most iconic 4x4 brand in the world,” said Jeep North America boss (and former Nissan Australia chief) Bill Peffer.
“From 4xe electrification to unmatched 392 power, this year’s Jeep 4x4 concepts illustrate how the most capable Wrangler ever appeals to such a wide range of people.”
Two of the four concepts use the four-dour Jeep Wrangler Rubicon as their donor vehicle, while the Mopar twins are based on the Jeep Gladiator Rubicon and Grand Wagoneer.
Jeep Willys Dispatcher Concept
The first of the bespoke show vehicles is the Jeep Willys Dispatcher concept inspired by the early post-war civilian Jeep.
The Willys Dispatcher rolls on cream 16-inch steel wheels and wears a retro-style front bumper housing an equally vintage-style Warn 8274 winch, WILLYS badging, bikini-top roof, flat fenders and exclusive Element 115 Green exterior paint.
Matching the classic exterior is an equally period-centric interior treatment headlined by distressed saddle leather and houndstooth cloth upholstery. There are no seat head restraints and only vinyl floor coverings.
The retro-inspired vibes are paired with the thoroughly modern 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain , 36-inch tyres, Dana 50 Advantech axles and an on-board air compressor.
Jeep Low Down Concept
Next out of the blocks is the 2024 Jeep Low Down concept that harks back to the old Jeep Wrangler Lower 40 concept – one of the most popular Jeep concept vehicles to date.
The Low Down takes things a step further than its predecessor with huge 42-inch mud tyres squeezed into its modified wheel-arches, although the suspension is lifted straight from the standard Jeep Rubicon 392 .
Supporting the vast rolling stock is a set of Dana 60 axles, while the front and rear bumpers have been chopped to help accommodate the monster-truck-style set-up, so there’s no front or rear overhang.
Ground clearance and all key off-road angles inevitably benefit as a result, with other unique touches including a rear-door delete, Poison Apple Red paint, custom black leather seats with cloth inserts, Rhino-lined floors, custom radio-delete instrument panel, and carbon bonnet with a clear power dome through which you can see the Wrangler Rubicon 392’s 6.4-litre HEMI V8.
Jeep Gladiator Rubicon High Top Concept
Moving into the accessorised concepts, the 2024 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon High Top is all about showing off the prowess and commitment of Mopar “to push the performance boundaries” off-road.
Starting life as a standard Gladiator Rubicon , the High Top rolls on 18-inch beadlock wheels shod with 40-inch all-terrain tyres and Dana 60 front and rear axles, while suspension duties are handled by an adjustable AccuAir air set-up.
Clearance for the big wheels is ensured by the custom flat fender flares, while the body and undercarriage are looked after by the increased ground clearance, American Expedition Vehicles front bumper and rock sliders housing an integrated step that extends when the doors open.
Other off-road-minded fitments include a Warb winch, truck bed storage system and sun bonnet.
The body is coated in ‘Ginger Snap’ metallic paint with contrasting retro-inspired graphics, while the cabin is upholstered in custom quilted and perforated tan and black Alea leather.
Jeep Vacationeer Concept
Rounding out this year’s Easter Safari concepts is the 2024 Jeep Vacationeer concept – essentially a retro-inspired Grand Wagoneer converted into a self-contained all-terrain camper.
Finished in a striking ‘Spearminted’ teal and white colourway and fitted with a designer leather, cloth and wood interior, the Vacationeer has had its second and third rows removed to accommodate the integration of a RedTail Overland Skyloft that can be accessed from outside the vehicle or from the cabin.
Enhancing the overlanding appeal of the rugged camper are 35-inch all-terrain tyres housed within enlarged and extended wheel-arches, heavy-duty skid plates, a trio of LED light bars on the roof and a Warn winch.
Rounding out the historic vibes is a tasteful woodgrain graphic running along the SUV’s beltline in honour of the original Wagoneer and complementing the woodgrain interior.

Jeep Vacationeer Concept Leads Four New Off-Roaders Into 2024 Easter Safari
These four off-roading concepts will join thousands of Jeep owners in Moab, Utah.
NicoDeMattia
It's that time again. The Easter Jeep Safari is back for 2024 and a quartet of new concepts will join thousands of Jeep owners in Moab, Utah for off-roading fun. Every year Jeep brings radical new concepts to the event and this year is no different. Headlined by the Jeep Vacationeer Concept, the new off-roaders also include a Jeep Low Down Concept, a Willys Dispatcher Concept, and a Gladiator Rubicon High Top Concept.
These new Jeep concepts aren't as cool as last year's, which included an incredible 1978 Jeep Cherokee with a modern hybrid powertrain and a 650-horsepower electric Wrangler called "Magneto." However, they're still pretty cool.
Jeep Vacationeer Concept
As you might imagine from the name, the Jeep Vacationeer is based on the Wagoneer , which was then transformed into a retro-styled off-road camper of sorts. Its mint green paint, with a thin stripe of wood paneling, gives it retro vibes without overdoing it, and it comes with a solar-powered, climate-controlled, carbon fiber RedTail Overland Skyloft roof tent. But it's also a proper off-roader, with 701 Method bead grip racing wheels, 35-inch BFGoodrich mud-terrain tires, bumper-mounted lights, and roof-mounted lights.
Fashion designer Kiel James Patrick designed the interior, giving it Tupelo leather seats with red and yellow plaid inserts that have little Jeeps on them. The Vacationeer also lacks rear seats of any kind, for more storage. What it doesn't lack is power, thanks to the high-output version of Jeep's Hurricane 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six making 510 horsepower.
Jeep Willys Dispatcher Concept
It wouldn't be a Jeep event without getting the Willys name in there somewhere. This time, it's the Willys Dispatcher Concept, which is said to invoke the "nostalgia of the early post-war civilian Jeep," according to Jeep. However, it blends that nostalgia with modern tech, as it's based on the Wrangler 4xe hybrid.
The Willys Dispatcher might look retro cute, with its green paint and white steel wheels, but it's a serious off-roader underneath. Those great-looking steelies are wrapped in 36-inch Super Traxion tires, it has a classic-look Warn winch, Dana 50 Avantech front and rear axles, and an onboard air compressor.
Jeep Gladiator Rubicon High Top Concept
Designed to show off Jeep Performance Parts (JPP), the Gladiator Rubicon High Top is the most kitted-out Gladiator I've ever seen. Dana 60 axles front and rear with matching 5.38:1 gearing, an AccuAir adjustable air suspension, and monster 40-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A Ko3 tires wrapped around KMC Grenade Crawl beadlock wheels make it probably the most capable off-roader Jeep is bringing to the Easter event.
It also gets a modified front bumper by American Expedition Vehicles, a Warn winch, Rock Slide Engineering rock rail power steps, and a DECKED trunk bed storage system. Making it look snazzy is a two-tone Ginger Snap metallic paint scheme.
Jeep Low Down Concept
Jeep just announced that the Wrangler 392 is heading off to the junkyard in the sky, but not before the brand makes a monster Easter concept out of it. The Low Down Concept pays tribute to the Wrangler Lower 40 concept from the 43rd Easter Safari held 15 years ago.
The old Lower 40 concept put 40-inch tires on a Wrangler with stock suspension, to keep the center of gravity low. However, Jeep went even further this time, sticking 42-inch BFGoodrich Krawler mud-terrain tires, wrapped around beadlock wheels, on a Wrangler 392 with stock suspension. To fit the massive tires, carbon fiber high-clearance fender flares were fitted, allowing the tire necessary clearance without raising the Wrangler's ride height. Dana 60 axles replace the stock 392's Dana 44 axles but no changes were made to the 392-cubic inch V8, which still makes 475 horsepower.
The 58th Easter Jeep Safari is running from March 23-31, so keep an eye out for more updates on what Jeep's new off-roader concepts are doing in Moab.

These 4 New Jeep Safari 2024 Concepts Run From Retro To Outright Rude
In Moab, Utah, from March 23 to 31, Jeep is once again holding its Easter Jeep Safari event. Easter has always been the time of year when Jeep shows off whatever wacky concepts it's working on, and the 58th annual event is no different. For this year, Jeep brought out four concepts: the Low Down, the Willys Dispatcher, the High Top, and the Vacationeer.
Starting from the least crazy, the Willys Dispatcher has the bones of a Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid and is supposed to call to mind the first generation of Jeeps meant for regular people who weren't in service in the European of Pacific Theaters of World War II. The powertrain is the same: a 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor that outputs a combined 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.
The body and aesthetics, however, are a different story. The paint is a color that Jeep is calling Element 115 Green, and the steelie-inspired wheels are 1950s cream-colored. The inside is saddle leather and cloth seats. To further give it a retro look, the headrests were removed because why not? It's a convertible with only the slightest impression of a conventional "roof." A huge embossed "Willys" logo on the hood completes the Jeep's classic vibe.
The Vacationeer and the High Top
Next is the Vacationeer. It's based on the Grand Wagoneer, only with a fairly substantial lift and the obligatory 35-inch tires. It sports a number of skid plates underneath for overlanding aptitude. But the centerpiece is the huge rooftop tent supplied by RedTail Overland, called the Skyloft. The interior temperature is adjustable (because, of course, it is), and can fit up to two people. It's powered by the twin-turbo Hurricane inline-six engine that makes 510 horsepower (the same engine that will feature in the upcoming new Dodge Charger), and it's finished in a color called "Spearminted." A rooftop tent on a luxury SUV isn't that unusual, but in this case, the factory roof of the Grand Wagoneer has been removed, making Vacationeer essentially a two-story camping spot.
The Jeep Gladiator Rubicon High Top concept is fitted with 40-inch tires and an adjustable air suspension system. According to a Jeep press release, it was made to show the Gladiator's off-road credibility. It sports a "Ginger Snap" paint scheme and the tried and true Pentastar 3.6-liter V6.
The Jeep Low Down
Lastly, the Jeep Low Down Concept takes the cake for the most insane Jeep the automaker will show off. It's powered by the soon-to-be departed 392 V8 and is based on the Wrangler Rubicon 392. It has 42-inch tires on 20-inch wheels and is completely absurd, whatever angle you look at it. To make matters weirder, there's a clear cover on the hood so you can see the engine. Plus, there's no infotainment system to speak of. Jeep exterior designer Chris Piscitelli points out, there's a two-mode exhaust that can be set to "loud and entirely obnoxious: that's all the entertainment you need in this one." That's about as unambiguous of a reason you can have.
There's little chance the Jeep-buying public will see cars like the four Easter Safari concepts hit dealership lots anytime soon, and the event really acts as a testing ground for both Jeep engineers and the Jeep Performance Parts division. That said, it's hard not to get at least a little excited to see goofy factory Jeeps with wild (and in some cases impractical) modifications thrashing about the desert.

QuickTakes:
- Easter Jeep Safari began in 1967
- The event serves as a trade show for the Jeep world
- Showing off concepts and generating buzz
Every year, thousands of Jeep owners, enthusiasts, and parts and accessories suppliers descend upon Moab, Utah, for the annual Easter Jeep Safari. This year's gathering is set to take place March 23-31.
The Easter Jeep Safari Began in 1967
The origins of the Easter Jeep Safari can be traced back to 1967, when the Moab Chamber of Commerce, looking for a way to boost tourism, landed on the idea of holding an event for Jeep owners on the Saturday before Easter. Early versions of the event involved a single trail ride, in most cases to the Behind the Rocks Wilderness Study Area south of town. Chamber staff served as trail guides, and the event included lunch with a unique dessert: ice cream brought in by plane.
The Event Is a Weeklong Jeep-Fest
Since 1983, the Easter Jeep Safari has been hosted by the Red Rock 4-Wheelers, a four-wheel-drive club based in Moab. The event has grown considerably over the years and now lasts a little more than a week, ending on Easter Sunday. Over the course of the week, the Red Rock 4-Wheelers host numerous trail rides each day, ranging from leisurely forest-road cruises to white-knuckle outings on Moab's most difficult trails.
While the itinerary consists mainly of guided rides, enthusiast gatherings and product demonstrations abound as well. There are so many that you might consider the Easter Jeep Safari a trade show for Jeep and Jeep-associated brands. Scores of companies including Bilstein and BFGoodrich set up shop for the week, ready to help with last-minute repairs while also promoting their latest products.
The safari can be an exciting spectacle for everyday four-wheel-drive enthusiasts as well, even those who aren't Jeep owners. Just about everyEvery type of 4x4 — including the Ford-built GPW, a World War II military vehicle and Willys MB counterpart — can be seen crawling the streets around Moab throughout the week.
Jeep Shows Off Concepts and Generates Buzz
The Jeep brand itself makes the trek from its corporate offices in Auburn Hills, Michigan, to the red rocks of southern Utah to debut concept vehicles at the event, taking advantage of both the epic Moab backdrop and the hordes of enthusiasts on hand.
Jeep claims it was testing vehicles in Moab long before it officially involved itself in the Easter Jeep Safari. Noteworthy Jeep concepts that have debuted in Moab over the years include the Mighty FC, the Wagoneer Roadtrip, and the J6.
Many of the concepts — the Wagoneer Roadtrip, for example — function as little more than one-off, high-dollar showpieces, while others, such as the Wrangler Rubicon 392 concept shown off in 2019, have served as precursors to production models.

Off-road Bonaire Tour – An Island Tour Review
The only way to see the rugged natural beauty of Bonaire is with a 4x4 off-road Bonaire tour. Read our complete shore excursion review of this island tour from our recent Southern Caribbean cruise. See
Share this post:
On this off-road Bonaire tour , it was us against the road, or the dirt path that occasionally substituted for a road, as The Princess and I, along with some fellow Canadian cruisers, traveled throughout the island on the back of a 4×4 Land Rover. We would have buckled up, if there were seat belts!
Boarding our 4×4 for the off-road Bonaire tour
Besides some snorkeling or scuba diving excursions, which are not really up the wife’s alley, this tour was one of few other options available during our impromptu stop in Bonaire during our Adventure of the Seas cruise . So, we were ready for a bumpy ride as we set off to explore the island!
Off-road Bonaire Tour
Exiting the city.
Luckily, the weather was sunny and warm, making it a perfect day for a ride in this open air vehicle. The Princess, her sister, and I filed into one side of the vehicle, while our new found friends took ownership of the other side of this off-road truck.
Before we departed, our roughly three hour off-road Bonaire tour was laid out by our guide using a tourist map. Our explorations would take us to some of the most scenic points on the island, with a beach break more than half-way through the tour.
Before we could test the shocks on this vehicle, we had to escape the confines of the capital city, Kralendijk. Among the points we passed on this short stretch included the oldest catholic church on the island (San Bernardo), the post office, and even the local prison (glad we did not stop at this site) as we headed north and east from the city.
Throughout our off-road Bonaire tour, Gigi, our guide and former police officer, used a small microphone to provide narration of some of the sites we were passing. While hard to hear at times, he tried to keep us engaged by telling jokes and trying to point out the island’s natural landscapes and wildlife.
Leaving the City
Further removed from civilization.
Leaving the city, the roads became less developed, and there were fewer fellow travelers on the roadways.
Traveling on the secondary road of Kaminda Lagun, we made an impromptu stop at what was a small local “farm”. The fence lined yard was the home to an array of animals including donkeys, goats, pigs, and chickens. The guide’s introduction indicated we would be seeing animals during our tour, but this isn’t exactly what we had in mind.
Our first “stop” on the Off-Road Bonaire Tour
While it felt like we were traveling further away from civilization, the surrounding landscape of cacti and sand was occasionally disrupted by a homestead, or the oddly placed Fatima Snack bar, complete with a walled fence of beer boxes. There was also this unexpected castle of sorts, which our tour guide joked was the castle from Harry Potter. From what I can recall of the explanation, the current owner is hoping to turn the building into a museum.
A Castle in the Middle of Nowhere Bonaire
It wasn’t long until we traversed the island to our first official stop at Washikemba. A very scenic vantage point, perfect for taking pictures, the lagun is also home to some popular hiking and biking trails that hug the rugged coast of the island. Locals too come to the area to collect mementos which are believed to bring good luck. Taking in the views for a few moments, we were ready to head back west, and now south, as the off-road Bonaire tour was about to get a little bumpy.
The Washikemba Waterfront
Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.
Venturing back down the Kaminda Lagun, the 4×4 took an abrupt left, onto a dirt road and this is where the true off-road Bonaire tour began. This shortcut was definitely not on the map, and the hilly, bumpy, terrain provided a bit of an adventure in the back of the Land Rover.
Now, completely off the grid, at least according to Google Maps, we continued south, as we headed toward the mangroves and beaches on the southern tip of the island. Along the way, we passed private farms lined with cactus fences, but we did not cross any other vehicles or notice any other islanders. Without much to see, Gigi was quiet, whether he was focusing on the uneven terrain or just tired of talking, we were not sure.
Off the Beaten Path in Bonaire
As we rounded a bend, white hills could be seen in the horizon-our guide was adamant that they were hills of snow. Of course, we all knew it was salt, one of the island’s primary exports. Through the twists and turns, we eventually found ourselves back onto a secondary road, heading toward Sorobon Beach.
Our off-road Bonaire tour took us past the Wanapa Lodge , a full resort that is located within walking distance to the beach.
Completing our Island Tour
Passing the mangroves, we did a quick loop around the public beach area and stopped in a parking lot across from Jibe City , a Windsurfing and hangout located right on Lac Bay.
With a high tide and crowded beach, there was not much room for us to enjoy the location. With a local beer at the bar and a quick survey of the coast, we were ready to leave in half the time allotted for us to experience the beach break. Luckily, our fellow travelers agreed, and we were able to convince our tour guide to resume the off-road Bonaire tour early.
Limited Shoreline at Sorobon Beach
For the remainder of the ride, we were back on paved roads, although they were not the smoothest. More short photo ops were in store for this last leg of the tour, including a brief stop on the side of the road to see some flamingos at the flamingo sanctuary. Unfortunately, visitors are not allowed in the sanctuary, and these pink birds were quite far away given the tide conditions. Binoculars would have been a bonus here.
We also passed the Willemstoren Lighthouse. A 75 foot tall lighthouse that has been active since the 1830s and still to this day sends a beam of light (which is now solar powered) out into the Caribbean Sea every 9 seconds. This lighthouse is not open to the public but does make for a nice photo op.
Nearby, we made another official stop at the infamous yellow slave huts. With the colonization of the island, many native people were put into slavery working the salt flats. Tiny “huts” were constructed during the 18 th century for the slaves, with these small homes often housing 6 slaves at a time. While the roofs have been restored, some of the original huts still exist on the west coast of the island across from the salt refinery.
Now a modern operation, the salt mines on the island are still a worthy visit during an island tour. The contrast between the various hues of pink colored salt pans and the large mounds of white dry salt is quite a sight. The last official stop on the tour, we pulled off the main road to grab some photos and learn about the history of the salt trade on the island and the modern transportation of the commodity.
Having trekked throughout the island for most of the afternoon on the off-road Bonaire tour , all 7 of us were ready to head back to the ship. The short ride back to the port included passing a few of the island’s beaches and the small airport.
We had come full circle from the city center, through the interior of the island, and back to the comforts of the ship. Luckily, we all made it back in one piece.
Overview of 4×4 Off-road Bonaire Tour
We booked this tour with our cruise line, Royal Caribbean . The tour was entitled 4X4 Island Exploration with the total tour lasting approximately 2.5 hours. The tour was run by Bonaire Offroad Adventure Tours and included only a few stops-including a beach break at Sorobon Beach.
The Terrain of the 4×4 Off-road Bonaire Tour
During our cruise, this tour was offered with two different time slots- a morning and early afternoon departure. We opted for the afternoon (1:30pm), so we could sleep in a bit then explore the surrounding port area. Being one of the more popular tours in Bonaire, we lined up with other cruisers in preparation for the arrival of the 4×4 Land Rovers about 15 minutes prior to our meeting time. The Land Rovers for the off-road Bonaire tour hold about 8 people, so our party of three was joined with another group of four from Canada for the duration of the tour.
Highlight : Our tour guide, Gigi, was very friendly and wanted to make sure we saw everything and had a good time. Given the condition of the roads (basically dirt paths), traveling in a 4×4 is really the best way to see the island!
What’s Missing : Most of the “adventure” included us stopping at the side of the road to see “sites”, but we never stopped for long or explored many of these attractions. There were also long stretches where there was not much to see or take pictures of during the tour.
Given that our stop in Bonaire was not part of the original itinerary, we booked our excursion directly through the cruise line, but there are a few different options for off-road adventure tours in Bonaire. The local tour company that provided our excursion also offers quad ATV tours in the eastern part of the island, but you will need to find your own transportation to the starting point. Royal Caribbean also offered a similar 4×4 off-road tour of the northern part of the island, to the Arawak Indian caves-this tour appears to be run by Bigfoot Bonaire Tours . We might try that off-road Bonaire tour the next time we visit the island in hopes of a bit more excitement and sightseeing.
Have you ever taken an off-road Bonaire tour ? What do you like to do while you are docked in this Southern Caribbean port? Drop us an anchor below to help your fellow travelers find the right shore excursion for their stop in Bonaire.

This Off-Road Dodge Viper Is The Most American Safari Machine Ever
Call this wild build whatever you want, overcoming the challenges to make it a reality are noteworthy and admirable
by Stephen Rivers
The Dodge Viper is already a wild car but slap some bespoke suspension parts on it, a 12-inch lift kit, and some mud-terrain tires and it’s downright crazy. That’s exactly what one man has done though and the process has been extremely intricate. In his latest video, he details what it’s taken just to get this off-road-focused Viper back on the road safely.
The man in question is Matt Brown who is the face of the YouTube channel SuperFastMatt. This off-road Viper project began early in 2023 and Brown detailed his goals and thoughts in March of the same year. In that video, he described his intention to make this a “rally Viper”. Essentially, it’s not just a “Safari” version or a Viper body on a truck frame but is instead mostly Viper with serious rally capability mixed in.
A new video demonstrates what Brown has done just to make the highly modified car road-worthy again. The entire drivetrain had to be tilted downward from front to back and that required cutting and re-welding the frame. He also added droop-limiting straps to his bespoke- designed suspension which consists of bespoke knuckles and control arms.

The next job on the road-worthiness checklist was bleeding the brakes but that wasn’t simple either. Brown’s power bleeder had the wrong cap fitting so he had to rig up a zip-tie/steel cap situation for that to work in short order. He had to rebuild part of his emergency brake too.
Then he found himself facing a no-start condition that initially appeared to be a dead ECU. That was confusing since he hasn’t actually modified the engine itself in any way. Thankfully, the real problem was a wire he’d disconnected in the past and left unplugged not realizing how vital it was.
Once the Viper was running, Brown tested out the fuel pressure, fixed an old Schrader valve, and turned his attention to the exhaust. Since the drivetrain is tilted the exhaust normally would be too. To fix this issue, Brown bored out the mounting holes so that there was some flexibility in the joint. He used steel wire to support the rear of the exhaust until the proper hangers were installed.
Then he added a new shifter complete with a bespoke knob from a subscriber only to realize that the shifter linkage was faulty. So back went the original shifter and the off-road Viper was finally ready for its first on-road voyage.
To put it simply, it was short, but it was also a success, and not long after he went out for a second drive. Now, we’ll just have to wait for him to find time to take it off-road. One imagines it’ll require even more custom work. Well worth it for a labor of love.

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.
Duration: 2 hours
Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing
This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.
Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.
Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.
Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.
Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating
We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…
This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.
The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.
Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.
The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.
You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.
Physical Rating
Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…
These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.
These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.
These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.
These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.
Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.
Luxury Rating
Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.
To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport.
