Tahuantinsuyo: The Most important Empire in South America

Tahuantinsuyo: The Most important Empire in South America

Have you ever wondered what Tahuantinsuyo means? The Inca Empire was the most important in the American territory due to its extension and its cultural wealth that, to this day, can be seen in the territories that made up part of the empire. An example of this is the majestic Inca Citadel in Peru: Machu Picchu .

The Empire of the Incas

Around 500 years ago, one of the greatest Indian advanced civilizations in America experienced its heyday in the Inca Empire . The heartland of the Inca Empire, which stretched over 4000 km along the South American west coast from the area of today's Ecuador in the north to far south in the Andean region of Chile, was today's Peru. Impressive monuments in the Peruvian Andes still bear witness to the high cultural level of the Incas.

The capital of the Tahuantisuyo was Cusco , was also in the Peruvian Andes highlands. This name means "navel" in an Inca language. This underlines the outstanding importance of this, at the beginning of the 16th century, the largest Indian city in South America. The Inca Empire was a perfectly organized central state with up to 10 million inhabitants. At its head was an Inca endowed with great power who was considered the son of the sun god. Only the male descendants of a few families that were among the founders of the Inca Empire were allowed to bear the noble title Inca.

What does Tahuantinsuyo mean?

Tahuantinsuyo is a word from Quechua (the original language of the Andes) and is born from the fusion of 2 terms: Tahua, which means "Four", and Suyo, which means "Region". The name referred mainly to the four regions in which the empire was divided. To the northwest was the Chinchaysuyo , to the northeast the Antisuyo , to the southwest the Contisuyo and to the southeast the Collasuyo .

What territories did theirs cover?

Located south-east of Cusco, this Suyo was the largest in Tahuantinsuyo and at the same time the one with the least population. Their territories began in Urcos south of the imperial city and crossed the Titicaca region. In addition, on the coastal side the lands of the Collasuyo ranged from the south of Arequipa to the Maule River on the southern border of the Tahuantinsuyo.

From the South-west of Cusco and up to the Coastal Region, the Contisuyo territories were made up of the lands located between the valleys of the Quilca River and Ica.

Chinchaysuyo

The Chinchaysuyo extended through the Northwest of Cusco from Ayacucho and Ica and up to the Ancasmayo River.

The Antisuyo lands began northeast of Cusco and extended to the High Amazon Jungle because the climatic conditions and geographical characteristics did not allow them to continue further on.

Tauantinsuyo

What territories belonged to the Tahuantinsuyo?

In the 13th century the Incas from the Peruvian highlands (who had to mobilize after a confrontation with the Aymara culture) settled in Cusco. Once the sovereignty of the city was assured, they prepared to begin from there the expansion of the Empire that in its heyday managed to extend for 2,500,000 km² through the lands that today belong to Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Argentina and Colombia.

What was the social structure of the Incas?

At the top of the Inca social scale was the Inca, Son of Inti , " The Sun God" , and who by divine order should rule the Tahuantinsuyo . The only way to become an Inca was by forming part of the blood line of succession, since the position was hereditary.

Under the figure of the Inca was the Ayllu Panaca , a group formed by the direct family of the Inca. Among his members was the Auqui or heir to the Empire, who ruled alongside his father while he was prepared to assume command of the Tahuantinsuyo once the ruling Inca passed away. In this ladder was also the Coya, main wife of the Inca and daughter of the Moon, dedicated to the home of royalty.

All these mentioned profiles were part of royalty, as they shared direct blood ties with the Inca.

Then there is a privileged nobility, made up of the rest of the Inca's non-direct relatives. The Curacas, local nobles and heads of an ayllu, were in charge of organizing tasks at the territorial level as they were councilors, judge, and administrators of the ayllu's assets. The priests were also part of this privileged nobility within this empire.

Lastly, there was the rest of the town. Here we can differentiate three types of people:

The Hatunruna, The peasant town.

The Mitimaes, who were in charge of colonizing new lands and teaching Inca customs.

The Yanaconas or Cobricios, the servants of royalty and who, in general, were prisoners.

How many Incas did the Tahuantinsuyo have?

In total there were 13 Incas who ruled Tahuantinsuyo, Manco Cápac being the first of them and the last Atahualpa Cápac, after the arrival of the Spanish to the continent.

the inca name for their empire, tahuantinsuyu, means what?

Tupac Inca Yupanqui "Pachacuted" , the ninth Inca, was one of the most important emperors in the history of Tahuantinsuyo due to his work in the expansion of the Inca territory through the conquest of other ethnic groups such as the Ayarmacas, the Chancas and the Suyos. At the same time, other peoples peacefully joined the empire such as the Cotanera, Omasayo, Cotapampa and Aimarae.

Tahuantinsuyo

When you search for information about Peru on the Internet, many times you come across the word Tahuantinsuyo , a term that you may have never heard before. What exactly is the Tahuantinsuyo ? How did it appear? How far did it extend?

What was Tahuantinsuyo ?

dreamy tours

The Tahuantinsuyo or the “It was Four regions of the Inca empire”, was the territory of the Empire of the Incas, it was made up of four regions or four of its own: Collasuyo, Chinchaysuyo, Contisuyo and Antisuyo, its territory had an approximate area of 1’700,000 km² and was It extended through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru , Bolivia , Argentina and Chile, it was the largest territory in pre- Columbian America .

Origin of the Tahuantinsuyo

There are many stories about the emergence of the Inca empire , but here we are going to tell the one that is based on Inca mythology.

According to the myth, the origin of Tahuantinsuyo is in the history Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo. This couple, who were brothers as well as husband and wife, were sent by the Sun god to find the right place to found a city in which to civilize people who lived like wild animals.

To do this, he gave them a gold staff that they would have to drive into the earth of the places where they will pass until they find one where the staff will sink easily. The site with these characteristics is where the city of Cusco is currently located.

Thus, they chose this place to found this new city that over the years would become the capital of the Tahuantinsuyo and, for this civilization, the navel of the world. However, and despite its importance in history, the Tahuantinsuyo did not last more than a century: from its creation in 1438 until its fall in 1533, only 95 years passed.

Name’s origin

The name Tahuantinsuyo comes from two Quechua words: tahua, which means four, and his, which means region. This is because the Inca territory was divided into four regions: Collasuyo, to the southeast; the chinchaysuyo, to the northwest; the antisuyo, to the northeast and the continsuyo, to the west.

Extension of the Tahuantinsuyo

DREAMY TOURS

With 2, 500, 000 km², the Tahuantinsuyo was the largest empire in the entire history of Pre-Columbian America. Its territory ranged from southern Colombia to central Chile, passing through Ecuador, Argentina, Bolivia and, of course, Peru , where its greatest political force was concentrated.

All this territory was conquered through wars and alliances that were carried out with other cultures between the 15th and 16th centuries.

Organization of the Tahuantinsuyo

The system of the Inca empire was maintained and expanded for various reasons, one of the main ones was the way in which a very well organized religious, economic and social system was constituted and maintained.

Economy in Tahuantinsuyo

Its main economic activity was agriculture, planned and directed by the State. Livestock production, artisanal production, fishing, construction, and the distribution and circulation of products were also important, complemented by a large network of storage and conservation of agricultural products.

Social Organization in Tahuantinsuyo

The basis of social organization in the empire of the Incas is found in collectivism, that is, in the primacy of the group over the individual; the man has value as a component of the group. However there was a social hierarchy. The first place was occupied by the Inca, successively the nobility of blood, the nobility of privilege, the people, the mitimaes and the yanacunas.

Religion in Tahuantinsuyo

The Incas were polytheists and most of their gods represented elements of nature, each of them had particular attributes. Religion was present in every area of their lives. The cult and the religion involved each one of the festivities which were in charge of the priests, the most important was the Huillac Umu.

A variety of ritual products were used, such as corn, fine clothing (from cumbi), the coca leaf and the seashell called mullu (spondylus). During the year the Incas celebrated various festivities, which generally corresponded to a stage in agricultural activities and climatic changes.

Rulers of Tahuantinsuyo

There were a total of 13 Incas which can be divided as Legendary Empire and Historical Empire.

  • Manco Capac
  • Sinchi Roca
  • Lloque Yupanqui
  • Mayta Capac
  • Capac Yupanqui
  • Yáhuar Huácac
  • Inca Viracocha

Tahuantinsuyo Flag

One of the things that most attracts the attention of tourists (and also locals) who take a City Tour in Cusco , is the amount of multicolored flags raised in the great buildings of the Inca Empire.

However, although at first glance they may seem similar, the one found in Cusco is nothing more than a modern representation of the Inca Empire, it has 7 multicolored stripes; while the Tahuantinsuyo Flag only has 5 stripes.

History of the Tahuantinsuyo Flag

dreamy tours

In 1973, Raúl Montesinos Espejo (1920-2004) designed the current flag as part of the celebration for the 25 years of Radio Tahuantinsuyo (which broadcast folkloric, Andean and highland music). Five years later, in 1978, the former Mayor of the Provincial Municipality of Cusco , Julio Gilberto Muñiz Capare, at the proposal of councilor Mario Cutimbo Hinojosa, adopted such a design as the official Flag of Tahuantinsuyo.

The oldest reference to the use of a Tahuantinsuyo Flag would come from the hypothesis of the defunct National Institute of Culture (INC), which restored the Santiago Mataindios canvas, which would show the use of the hunancha. We see, in the image, that the third ear (member of the Inca nobility) carries a banner with the figure of two condors wearing a maskaypacha. This, of course, is nothing more than a hypothesis.

María Rostworowski, renowned historian, asserts, with all clarity and conviction: «(…) the Incas did not have that flag: that flag did not exist, no chronicler makes reference to it.

The National Academy of History of Peru (the most important and prestigious association of historians in the country, a substitute for the Historical Institute of Peru), stated that “(The) official use of the misnamed Tahuantinsuyo Flag is improper and misleading.”.

The Cusco flag was modified in 2021, and the Inca gold disc was added, this golden disc was in the hands of the indigenous museum in the United States. The golden disc was returned to Peru, and for the commemorations of the bicentenary of Peru .

How To Peru

The Tawantinsuyu and the Frontiers of the Inca Empire

The Incas divided their empire into four parts, or suyus , each extending from the capital city of Cusco, the so-called “Navel of the Earth.” Collectively, the Incas referred to their empire as the Tawantinsuyu, which can be roughly translated as “Land of the Four Quarters” or “The Four Parts Together.” These four regions were known as Chinchaysuyu, Antisuyu, Cuntisuyu and Collasuyu.

Tawantinsuyu

For the Incas, politically at least, the four suyus of the empire extended from Cusco until the edge of the civilized and habitable physical realm. Rumors of other great civilizations may have existed, but the frontiers were largely fluid with no known major rivals hemming in the expansive and ever expanding empire.

Chinchaysuyu (Northwest Suyu)

The northwestern suyu , Chinchaysuyu, took its name from the province, or ethnic region, of Chincha.  Chinchaysuyu was the second largest of the four quarters, encompassing both the Peruvian coastal strip and Andean highlands north of Cusco, as well as much of modern-day Ecuador and a small segment of what is now southern Colombia . The Qhapaq Ñan, or Great Inca Road, ran the length of Chinchaysuyu, connecting the Inca capital of Cusco with Quito (the capital of modern-day Ecuador) in the far north.

According to the Encyclopedia of Prehistory (Volume 7: South America) , the ecological and ethnic diversity of the Chinchaysuyu region “engendered a very heterogeneous approach to imperial Inca rule.”

ENTERTAINMENT TIP: If looking for fun at night, or to watch sports during the day, or even a taste of home, visit the Wild Rover Hostels Chain for great food, sports and beer! Entrance to their bars is free even for non-guests

The region contained distinctly different and geographically defined cultures from the coastal lowlands, the Andean highlands and the tropical eastern foothills of the Andean range. In order to maintain greater control and stability in the region, the Incas allowed these different ethnic groups to retain many of their own beliefs and traditions.

Antisuyu (Northeast Suyu)

Antisuyu spread out to the north and northeast of Cusco. The suyu took its name from the Anti region and the Anti ethnic group that inhabited it (Anti, when Hispanicized, became Andes).

The vast Peruvian Amazon served to restrict the eastern expansion of the Antisuyu region. The Incas made few attempts to penetrate beyond the ceja de selva , the “brow of the jungle” that lay on the eastern foothills of the Andean range. They saw the deep jungle as a savage land populated by equally savage people.

But the tropical forests east of the Andes did provide a number of important products such as hardwoods (used for Inca weapons), feathers, wax and honey. The jungle was also an important source of medicinal herbs and hallucinogens (used in religious ceremonies and rites of passage).

Warriors, traders and explorers ventured east into the dense lowland jungles, but due to the problematic geography, Inca occupation of the region was not a priority. As such, Antisuyu remained a comparatively small region with a distinct lack of infrastructure (in terms of roads and major settlements).

Cuntisuyu (Southwest Suyu)

Cuntisuyu (or Contisuyu, Kuntisuyu) was the smallest suyu in the Tawantinsuyu. It extended southwest from Cusco until it reached the Pacific Ocean. Cunti was a province within the suyu , after which the region was named.

Geographically, Cuntisuyu was dominated by the dry foothills of the western highlands and the arid desert plains that stretched from modern-day Arequipa to the southern coast of Peru. Architecturally, the Incas adapted their construction style in the region to reflect that of local cultures more accustomed to the hot and dry climate. As such, fine Inca masonry as found in the highlands often gave way to adobe bricks along the coast of the Cuntisuyu region.

Collasuyu (Southeast Suyu)

Collasuyu (or Kollasuyu, Qullasuyu) was the largest of the four quarters. Named after the Colla (Qolla) peoples located on the northern shores of Lake Titicaca, the suyu encompassed Peru’s southern highlands and the Bolivian Altiplano (Andean Plateau) before pushing all the way south into central Chile and a large strip of northwestern Argentina.

The Collasuyu covered much of the Aymara and Uru territories. It also contained a number of major holy shrines, most notably those found in the Titicaca region. As such, Collasuyu held a special place within the Inca Empire, being both an important spiritual and political region of the Tawantinsuyu.
