Kangaroo Island Odysseys' tours are now operated by Intrepid.

Please note the business is now being operated by intrepid's dmc in australia and bookings should be directed to the dmc at this point in time. , for new bookings, please email [email protected]  or call 1300 544 882.

What's happening?

All current bookings are safe and secure, including bus, ferry and accommodation. No action is required on your part.  All current tour schedules and prices are being honoured for the 2023/24 season.

We have received a list of all of the bookings that were currently held by KIO, and we will be working over the next fortnight or so to input these into our system. In due course, you will receive a reconfirmation, which will include "our ref", "your ref" as well as the old Sealink booking reference. For those with many bookings, we will work out a system to provide an overview of all bookings rather than one by one.

It will take some time to send out all of these reconfirmations, and we prioritise departures going out in the coming weeks.

The Kangaroo Island Odyssey website has now been redirected, and we are currently building out the information on our new suppliers site .

New bookings

We are happy to receive your enquiry for new bookings, though we are prioritising putting the existing bookings into the system, so we will be a little slow on the uptake in the next fortnight. We ask for your patience with this. We are just as eager as you are to confirm your booking!

For new bookings, please email [email protected] or call 1300 544 882

Highlights of Kangaroo Island

A koala in a tree on Kangaroo Island

Meet native critters

With an expert guide by your side, you'll have a good chance of spotting native animals in their natural habitats. Keep an eye out for koalas high in the trees, fur seals sunning themselves on the rocks, echidnas searching for ants and platypus which can often be spotted at the waterholes in the Rocky River region at Flinders Chase National Park.

Little Sahara Dune on Kangaroo Island

Surf the dunes

Named for its rolling dunes that resemble the North African desert, Little Sahara is a must-visit for anyone who wants to admire sweeping views of the spectacular Vivonne Bay. But the fun doesn't stop at the top. To get back down to sea level, why not sandboard or toboggan your way down the slopes (the biggest of which is nearly 70 metres high). Adrenaline rush guaranteed.

A traveller admiring the sea views on a Kangaroo Island beach

Hike the Wilderness Trail

Get active and connect with nature on the Wilderness Trail. From dense bushland and towering Mallee forests to rugged coastline and vast vistas of the Southern Ocean, walking is a great way to see the island's beauty and explore at your own pace. Keep watch for local bottled-nosed dolphins and seabirds soaring above your head along the coastal sections.

A walker at Flinders Chase National Park

Explore Flinders Chase National Park

Explore Flinders Chase National Park and visit famous sites such as Weirs Cove, Harvey’s Return, Admirals Arch and Remarkable Rocks (and remarkable they are!). This unique, 500 million-year-old rock formation is perched 70 metres above the ocean and could easily be mistaken for a modern art sculpture.

Two Australian sea lions

See Australian sea lions

Kangaroo Island is one of the best places in the country to see Australian sea lions. Take a stroll along the boardwalks of the stunning Seal Bay where these intriguing animals have lived in large colonies for thousands of years. You'll observe their behaviour with a ranger and learn all about how they surf, hunt, nurture their pups and defend their territory.

Kangaroo Island beach

Hit the beach

Kangaroo Island's beaches are regularly voted as some of the most beautiful in Australia. The best part? They're lower on the tourist radar so you'll have them (almost) all to yourself. Hop your way between the white sands of Emu Bay, the turquoise waters of Vivonne Bay and the giant rock pool of the secluded Stokes Bay.

You can fly to Kangaroo Island from Adelaide and several other cities in Australia (subject to seasonal demand), or catch a ferry to Penneshaw from Cape Jervis on the Fleurieu Peninsula. The ferry takes around 45 minutes.

Learn more about how to get to Kangaroo Island

Getting around Kangaroo Island

There's no public transport on Kangaroo Island, so you'll need your own set of wheels. You can bring your car on the ferry, hire a car on the island or join a guided group tour.

When should I visit Kangaroo Island?

Kangaroo Island is a beautiful spot to visit at any time of year. Summer is generally hot and dry, and winter is mild. Spring and autumn are perfect for bushwalking, fishing and seeing the island's native flowers in bloom.

Learn more about when to visit Kangaroo Island

What should I pack for Kangaroo Island?

Kangaroo Island is a casual place so you can leave your dressy clothes at home. Layered, breathable clothing is key, as while it can be chilly when you set off in the morning, it can warm up substantially throughout the day. You'll also need a pair of comfy walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses and a sunhat (even in winter). A raincoat or poncho is better than an umbrella as some areas can be very windy.

What to wear on Kangaroo Island

Most activities on Kangaroo Island involve the great outdoors, so there's no need to dress up. In the evening, smart casual is the typical dress code for the island's restaurants — think t-shirt and jeans. Evenings can be chilly, even during the summer months, so ensure you bring a couple of warm layers.

What's the internet access like on Kangaroo Island?

Telstra customers can get mobile data coverage in major tourist areas and along most of the island's sealed roads. There's limited signal available in more remote areas of the island, particularly when you're travelling off-road.

Customers with other network providers may have little or no coverage throughout the island, but most hotels and resorts offer wi-fi. Kangaroo Island ferries also offer free wi-fi.

Can I use my mobile phone on Kangaroo Island?

Telstra customers usually have the best coverage on Kangaroo Island, particularly in more populated areas. If you're with another network provider you may have less or no coverage at all, however, most hotels offer free wi-fi so you can stay connected.

Has Kangaroo Island recovered from the 2020 bushfires?

The 2020 bushfires were the biggest in the island's history. The fires burnt almost half of the island and had a devastating impact on the people, homes, businesses, wildlife, nature and tourism. As catastrophic as the fires were, Kangaroo Island and other bushfire-affected regions in South Australia are bouncing back. Nature is flourishing again and wildlife has returned to native habitats. Amazingly, some species that were thought to have been wiped out have been spotted, including the Kangaroo Island Little Pygmy Possum.

Tourism has suffered a great deal since the bushfires, but as the island continues to recover, it's more important than ever.

Is Kangaroo Island accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We're committed to making travel widely accessible , regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Tour Operator

Intrepid travel, the intrepid travel experience.

If you’re looking for adventure, you’ve come to the right place. For the past 25 years, we’ve been taking small groups of travelers on unforgettable trips around the world. What makes them unforgettable? Take a look for yourself and discover the Intrepid experience.

Our travelers have three styles of tour to choose from: Basix, Original and Comfort. Each has a different level of inclusions and accommodation, but all have unforgettable real life experiences as part of the package. Travellers can also choose themed trips, such as Family, Sailing or Food, to suit their interests.

Our group size has an average of just ten travellers, which allows us to get off the beaten track, use local accommodation and transport, and really get to know the culture. It also ensures we are contributing to the local economy; by choosing local suppliers we were able to keep AUD 60 million in local economies in 2012. We’re also working hard to reduce our carbon footprint and were the first in our sector to introduce carbon offset trips. This, along with our many corporate sustainability activities, has meant we’re one of the travel industry’s leaders in responsible travel.

Why Intrepid?

  •   Small groups - average of 10 people per trip
  •   Sustainability - pioneers for the industry
  •   Local leaders - authentic perspectives
  •   Local transport - get close and personal
  •   Local accommodation - experience real living
  •   Intrepid travelers - like-minded companions

Intrepid Travel has come a long way since its beginnings in 1989. From two university friends, a typewriter and a kitchen desk, it is now a proud member of The Intrepid Group, taking over 100,000 travelers every year.

Intrepid Travel is part of The Intrepid Group of companies, alongside leading small group adventure companies Peregrine, Urban Adventures and PEAK DMC.

Despite growing into a global business with over 1,000 staff based all over the world and over 800 different trips across every continent, we’ve remained devoted to the same grassroots values and responsible travel philosophies that we had at the very beginning.

On every trip we operate and in every interaction we have with a client, supplier or local, we live our core values everyday:

  • Integrity – Doing the right thing
  • Responsible – Think global, act local
  • Growth – Stakeholders in our own success
  • Innovation – Thriving on new ideas and embracing change
  • Fun – It’s engrained into who we are and what we do
  • Passion – We are inspired by the work we do and the trips we offer

The Kangaroo Island wilderness trail is one of Australia's newest and best hiking trails. You will walk along rugged coastal cliffs, through shrub heaving with birdlife and past some of the most unusual sculptured rocks you will ever see. Expect to see seals lounging in the sun, echidnas, kangaroos and little to no one other than those in your group. This Kangaroo Island tour takes you through a very isolated coastline on a peaceful island. Situated on the southern coast of Kangaroo Island, Inspiration Outdoors offer this spectacular yet remote 60km trail as a guided tour, completed in a series of day walks, returning to nearby lodge style accommodation each night. All meals and transfers from Adelaide and to the track each day are included so all you have to do is walk, then relax and we will do the rest. We've also included a guided walk with a local Ngarrindjeri guide in Myponga to really round out the experience.

Highlights of this walk

The Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail goes along one Australia’s most dramatic coastlines. With steep cliffs, calming forest and deserted beaches, this has to be one of Australia’s best walking trails. Complete the full trail with Inspiration Outdoors over 5 magnificent days.

Cape du Couedic

Day 1 - Transfer from Adelaide, short historic walk

Your holiday begins!

On the drive south to Cape Jervis we stop at Myponga. Here we meet a local Ngarrindjeri guide who will take us for a walk along the reservoir to learn about the lost tribe of the Warki people, their dispersion from Country, and their recent reappearance after 100 years. From here it's a short drive to Cape Jervis to catch the ferry to Kangaroo Island.

Later in the afternoon we will do an introductory walk before we settle into our accommodation for the night. Tonight's dinner will be in a local restaurant where we can sample the fare that Kangaroo Island has to offer!

Accommodation: Aurora Ozone Hotel, Kingscote (or similar)

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 1 - Transfer from Adelaide, short historic walk

Day 2 - Drive to trail head, walk to Snake Lagoon

It is time to get started on the fabulous Kangaroo Island wilderness trail! It is about a 2hr drive to the trail head, but we will still have a chance to have a brief look around the Kangaroo Island National Park visitors center, before we head off on our first walk. Today's walk is through a mix of forest and coastal vegetation.

Look out for kangaroos and echidnas as well as some interesting flora species.

In the afternoon, we will settle into our new accommodation where we will stay for the next three nights.

Accommodation: Discovery Parks Kangaroo Island Caravan Park ( or similar)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 2 - Drive to trail head, walk to Snake Lagoon

Day 3 - Snake Lagoon to Cape du Couedic, Weirs Cove to Remarkable Rocks

It is time to hit the coast. Spectacular sea cliffs with deserted bays below. Keep an eye out for seals and other sea life. Fossick on the beaches, and marvel at the views. We will walk along tho coast making our way towards the spectacular Cape du Couedic.

Today you will see the famous Admiral Arch a significant geological formation which has been sculpted by weathering and erosion from the sea over thousands of years.

We will end our days walk with a view of the famous Cape du Coedic lighthouse before driving back to our accommodation.

The extra 6.3km is optional to complete the walk around Weirs Cove and onto the adeptly named Remarkable Rocks.

Day 3 - Snake Lagoon to Cape du Couedic, Weirs Cove to Remarkable Rocks

Day 4 - Remarkable Rocks to Hanson Bay Rd

Today is a botanical wonderland with coastal views, amazing rock formations and the South West River. There is a good chance of seeing dolphins and whales today. We are up high early on, with a rocky limestone path underfoot. It is not really challenging, but you will need to watch your step.

We then head inland where we will be keeping an eye out for echidnas and wallabies. The afternoon offers a walk through recovering low coastal heath and tall Mallee forests. New flowers and regrowth give us a unique experience to see how the ecology of the island adapts to fire

The orchids in particular have responded well to the fire disturbance.

Accommodation: Discovery Parks Kangaroo Island Caravan Park (or similar)

Day 4 - Remarkable Rocks to Hanson Bay Rd

Day 5 - Hanson Bay to Kelly Hill Caves

Our final walk before we head back is a 10km stretch, which will see us complete the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail! This section walks through diverse habitat and interesting 'karst' cave systems. As we pass the freshwater lagoons birdwatchers will be pleased with the birdlife that occupies these important aquatic systems. We finish the walk at the Kelly Hill Visitors Center. It is a morning walk, and then we will make out way back to Penneshaw to catch an early afternoon ferry, and travel on to Adelaide. With a drop off in the Adelaide CBD in the late afternoon, we are sure you will be feeling tired, but fitter and at your absolute best.

About Walking Tours In General

How hard are the walks.

The difficulty of the walks ranges from tour to tour, from easy to challenging. We design all of our walking tours to be achievable for those with a moderate level of fitness. We do recommend doing some training before most tours, because physical activity is always more enjoyable if you are physically prepared. We will send you information about how to train when you book.

When on tour we find that a positive mental attitude is most important and that if you focus on the scenery, the company and the moment, and not on the kilometres, then you find yourself reaching your destination with little problem. You can always have a day or sometimes an afternoon off to relax if you feel like it. If you have any concerns about your fitness or ability to complete a walk, give us a call or send us an email and we can talk you through it.

Do I have to twin-share accommodation? Can I have my own room?

Our tour prices are based on rooms being twin share (two single beds in one room) or double (one double/queen bed in a room, shared by a couple). If you are travelling alone, we will place you in a room with someone of the same gender. If you have opted for a single supplement, this means you will have your own room but we won’t always be able to guarantee your own bathroom and king/queen bed due to the types of accommodation we use for group bookings. Often we stay at 2 or 3 bedroom chalets so that we can cook and have a common area for the group to relax and mingle at the end of your days walk. If having your own bathroom is important, give us a ring and we will see if it is possible.

Will I hold up the group if I’m a slow walker?

We find a lot of people who haven’t been on a walking tour before worry about this, but it’s rarely an issue. We keep a comfortable steady pace with plenty of opportunities to rest and take in the scenery along the way. Usually the group will spread out over a couple of hundred metres as we walk.

Normal walking pace on a formed surface like a road or footpath is around 4.5 – 6 km per hour and we tend to average just over 3 km per hour on bush tracks. It’s not a stroll but it’s not a brisk walk either. If you feel you may be slower than this, try some longer training walks to increase your walking fitness.

What is the average age of Inspiration Outdoors’ guests?

About 80% of our walkers are aged between 45 – 75, but we welcome all adults on our tours. We get a roughly 60/40 female to male split.

Posted in: About Walking Tours In General , Day Walk FAQs

What’s the food like? Can you cater for my dietary needs?

We serve simple, nutritious and delicious food on tour prepared by our guides, using fresh and local ingredients as much as possible. Sometimes we also eat out at restaurants. Breakfast, morning tea, lunch, fresh fruit, pre-dinner nibbles and a two course evening meal are all included. We are happy to adapt our menu to suit many dietary needs including gluten free, vegetarian and vegan diets – please ask when you book.

Are your walking tours just for “bushwalkers”?

Our walks are for anyone who enjoys walking and nature – bushwalkers or not. Our walks are conducted in safe, supportive and fun environments and you don’t need specialised equipment or experience to undertake them. We give you information about what you will need to bring and how you should prepare for each tour and we’re always here to answer any questions or concerns.

Do I have to walk every day on tour?

Of course not – it’s your holiday and you should do what you feel! Relax at the accommodation, come for a drive, get dropped off in town or go for a stroll of your own. On some days there is also the opportunity to walk for part of the day. This last option depends on whether there is vehicle access to the track.

What do I have to carry when I walk?

Very little. A water bladder or bottles, lunch/snacks/fruit for the day. a rain jacket, some personal first aid supplies and, on some days, lunch. You will probably want a camera as well. We return to accommodation each evening so there is no need to carry a large backpack.

Not sure if this is the right tour for you?

At Inspiration Outdoors, we understand that choosing the right tour can be a difficult decision. That’s why we’re here to help make the process as smooth as possible. If you still have questions, give us a call or drop us a line. Whether it’s a question about the tour itinerary or your fitness level, our customer care team is ready to answer it. We have product specialists for every tour who are eager to share their knowledge and help you plan your next adventure.

Tour overview.

Kangaroo Island is one of Australia’s most wildlife-rich and naturally diverse regions. Set out to discover its beauty on a jam-packed two days from Adelaide, checking out a sea lion colony in Seal Bay, giving sand boarding a shot in Little Sahara and searching for marine life in Vivonne Bay. Your expert guide will help you see the best of this island, with plenty of native wildlife to spot and optional adventures to enhance your stay. With all of the difficult stuff taken care of, just sit back and get ready to dive into South Australia’s wildlife and wilderness hotspot.

Visit the Seal Bay Conservation to see rare sea lions up close, and head to a local wildlife park to hand feed kangaroos and wallabies, some that have been recently rescued from bushfires.

Kangaroo Island is known for its pristine stretches of sand, and you’ll soon know why. Take in the impressive coastal views from Remarkable Rock, check out Vivonne Bay and stroll down Hog Bay Beach.

To get the heart racing, give sand boarding a crack down the white sand dunes of Little Sahara and climb to the island’s highest point – Prospect Hill – for some seriously panoramic views.

Reviews of this Operator

North american adventure.

This was my first international solo trip, but I never felt “alone” - there was always someone to go shopping, hike, or grab a quick bite with. The itinerary was a great balance between organized activities, while still allowing free time for exploring. Each location was unique and charming in its own way. Spending the night in the holy city of Moulay Idriss and wandering the winding streets of Chefchaouen were especially memorable. Thank you Mustapha and Intrepid for an incredible adventure!

Cambodia Discovery

The overall experience was fantastic. V good tour leader. All places visited had something special to do or see. I would book a tour with this company again. Only one negative tour hub is not I repeat not available to contact direct by phone.

Amazing Guatemala and beyond tour with Intrepid

Did Guatemala and beyond trip in November 22. It was amazing, we were so well looked after by our guide Aura. She was very knowledgeable and during our bus trips she gave us the history of the 4 countries. The border crossings can be tricky but handled very well by our guide. We saw all the most interesting and beautiful places. The hotels were lovely comfortable colonial style. I will travel with intrepid again

Central American Journey

Very enjoyable, good paced Tour. Tour Leader, Choko was helpful, knowledgeable and extremely informative.

Wonderful Croatian tour

Our tour guide,Tamara, was the highlight of our Explore Croatia tour. She was knowledgeable, organized, and so kind and fun. Croatia is a beautiful country. I loved the people, the scenery, the food, the history. I hope to go back one day. Intrepid was perfect for me. There was group time and there was plenty of free time. It wasn’t a luxury tour but all of our accommodations were clean and safe. The dinner in Hvar was SO special!

One Week In Costa Rica

The trip was amazing, everything was well planned out & there wasn't any issues. The tour guide was very friendly and made the experience fun. During the trip I didn't have to worry about safety as we were never put in harms way. I would definitely recommend & do again.

North Morocco Adventure

Touring the beautiful North of Morocco I learned far more than I’d anticipated in this 9 day tour. Interesting sights to see, with knowledgeable local guides, this tour provides a great balance of exposure to a different culture with ample time for relaxation. Chefchaouen is an absolute highlight, & not a place many Morocco trips of this kind go to. Loved it!

Essential Morocca

Essential Morocco was an absolute dream. Every single day had such informative walking tours and tours of local facilities. Whether it was dinner with a local family or visiting a pottery factory, I learned so much about Moroccan culture. The accommodations were safe and I felt secure the entire 11 days. This trip wouldn’t have been the same without one person. That person is Youssef. If you are coming to Morocco with Intrepid and you don’t request Youssef, you’re doing it wrong. Words cannot describe how incredible of a guide he is. There were 3 of us on our trip of 18-29 year olds and he made us all feel so welcome and safe all the time. Whether that is cracking jokes on long drives or giving us the itinerary for the next day, Youssef ensured we felt respected and seen.

Cambodia Adventure

Absolutely superb leader - knowledgeable. fun, safety conscious. Group of 15 travellers from 5 countries who bonded into a solid team. In addition to a fantastic itinerary, our leader’s love of karaoke made the trip unforgettable. It even inspired a song written as a tribute to him.
