Disney Cruise Upgrade at Port: Getting an Even Better Room

concierge sun deck on disney magic

Are you looking for a trick on how to get Disney cruise upgrades at port?

Maybe you want to try sailing in the Concierge Level, but you don’t want to pay the full price.

Sometimes you can really luck out at the port by scoring a Disney cruise upgrade for your trip.

In this post, I will walk you through the steps of upgrading at the port when cruising with Disney . If available, this allows you to get a super nice stateroom for a really great discount!

Disney Cruise Rooms

First, you should always book a stateroom that is comfortable for your family. For example, don’t book a stateroom on Deck 1 if you don’t want to be on a lower level.

You will be kicking yourself once you get to the port, and you find that upgrades aren’t available. Then you will be stuck with a Deck 1 room that you never wanted in the first place.

This brings me to a very important point- Disney Cruise Line does NOT always have upgrades available at the port .

So, when booking your Disney cruise, choose a room that you KNOW your whole family will like because you are not guaranteed to find any last minute deals.

I recently returned from a cruise on the Disney Magic where my family upgraded to Concierge at the port. On this cruise, I sailed with my husband and our two daughters (who were 6 and 18 months old).

Disney Cruise Upgrades

We initially booked a Deluxe Inside Stateroom on Deck 2 for this trip. When pricing out our stateroom options, I chose not to book a room with a verandah because the price was significantly more.

Concierge Stateroom on the Disney Magic

Obviously pricing is subjective based on circumstances, but it was over a thousand dollars more for a balcony. We decided it wasn’t worth it for this trip.

Disney Cruise Line had rooms with portholes available for a few hundred dollars more than our inside stateroom.

However, these cabins didn’t offer any additional space in the room. So, we decided to just stick with our Deluxe Inside Stateroom.

Disney Magic Cruise Ship at Castaway Cay

At least, that was the plan until we traveled with our toddler a few weeks prior to our trip. Our younger daughter, who isn’t the greatest sleeper at home, was even worse on our trip.

She woke up at random times throughout the night and was also up at the crack of dawn each day. Right before our cruise, my husband and I decided that a stateroom with a verandah would be super useful!

This way, our toddler could sit and play on the balcony (with an adult of course) at 5 AM rather than waking up our six year old.

However, because we still weren’t sold on spending an extra thousand dollars for a verandah, my husband and I reluctantly chose to just keep our Inside Stateroom.

Disney Magic Pool Deck

Instead, I kept an eye on the Disney Cruise Line website leading up to our cruise and continued to see a lot of rooms with balconies available.

Many times, Disney cruises sell out, but this wasn’t the case with our off-season trip on the Magic.

Still, we didn’t want to get our hopes up that we would be able to upgrade our room at the port.

Can You Ask for an Upgrade on a Cruise Ship

The first day of your cruise is known as embarkation day . This is the day when you arrive at the cruise terminal, check in, and board the ship.

On embarkation day, a Disney Cruise Line employee will check you in at a counter in the terminal. This process is very similar to the one at the airport.

It is at this check in counter where I inquired about a room upgrade. Once the cast member finished checking in my family and giving us our Key Cards , I asked if there were any upgrades available.

To my delight (and relief), she responded that they did have some upgrades available. She walked my family over to the supervisor’s counter. This counter was located right beside the Concierge check in counter.

Gold Key to the World Card

The supervisor informed us that she had a Concierge Stateroom available. This room included a verandah, which is what we REALLY wanted.

Since the stateroom was classified as Concierge, it also came with a price that was more than we really wanted to spend.

Port Upgrade Chart

The supervisor used a price chart to show her what my family needed to pay to upgrade our room.

Since we had originally booked one of the cheapest rooms on the ship, we needed to pay a lot more to make up the difference for the Concierge price.

(If you already had a room with a verandah booked, the price difference probably wouldn’t be that significant.)

Even though this Concierge room was priced quite a bit higher than what we had paid for our original room, it was HIGHLY discounted.

Disney Cruise Planner

Since I had been watching the room prices for our cruise on the DCL website, I was aware of the normal price for these rooms. It would have cost more than $4000 to change to a Concierge room BEFORE our trip.

The price to upgrade at the port was less than half of that!

Still, we really just wanted a balcony in our room. We weren’t totally sure we needed all of the perks that came with Concierge. We initially turned it down because we didn’t want to spend the extra money.

Disney Magic Mickey Statue In Atrium

But……after discussing it further, my husband and I agreed that we would probably never get the chance to cruise Concierge at more than 50% off again…So, we upgraded!

This way we got our balcony AND the experience of cruising Concierge!

Upgrade at Port

I wanted to make sure to mention a couple important things about upgrading your room at the port. Disney Cruise Line did a wonderful job of immediately updating our account with our new stateroom number.

In fact, the Concierge staff seemed to know all about us right after we switched to Concierge level. Our luggage, on the other hand, did not get the memo. Our luggage tags had our original stateroom number listed on them.

Pelican Plunge Water Slide on Castaway Cay

Because of this, they were delivered to the Inside Stateroom we had initially booked. This was easily fixed by our room host. Once I noticed luggage appearing in the hallway of other rooms, I mentioned our upgrade to our room host.

Within minutes, he was on the phone and had located our bags. They were then immediately brought to our room. In addition, our Castaway Club gift did not get put in our new stateroom. Instead, this backpack was waiting for us in our original room.

Again, this was quickly taken care of by Disney. I just wanted to mention that for those who may choose to do the room gifts or decorations. If you upgrade at the port, your room decorations may not immediately follow you there.

Final Thoughts on Disney Cruise Upgrades

I really don’t like making huge decisions in the spur of the moment, especially when finances are involved. Because of this, I was worried we would end up regretting our decision to upgrade our room to Concierge at the port.

Luckily, we all ended up being really happy with our decision. The verandah was a huge help throughout our five day trip, and we used it a ton!

Is it better to get there earlier if you are hoping to get an upgrade? I noticed the ship we are sailing in October has many rooms available right now, so hoping to get an upgrade.

Hi Michelle,

I think it helps to get to the port early when you’re wanting to ask about an upgrade. I know people have scored an upgrade later in the day, but if you’re wanting first dibs on what is available, you’ll want to ask as soon as possible.

We upgraded from a Navigators Verandah room to a Family Veranduh for just $200 more last October. Having the extra space for the playpen was totally worth it!! I’m checking now for our next cruise and its $1k to upgrade. Hoping to get the same deal at the port next time!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! $200 sounds like a great price for the extra square footage. We love the family verandah rooms! Hope you get lucky on your port upgrades on the next cruise! 🙂

Was there an option to upgrade to just a verandah room or only concierge?

Hi Courtney,

Yes, the cast member will give you prices for a stateroom with a verandah if one is available for an upgrade. Hope you have a great trip!

Hi, I am going on the Magic in January and hope to upgrade at port. You picture shows concierge bar is open 5pm-10pm. Are drinks free that entire time- or only certain hours?

During our sailing, the Concierge bar served free drinks during the whole 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm time slot. I’m not sure if it’s unlimited free drinks, but we were able to grab wine to take to dinner with us. After dinner, we got a second drink to take to the show. Hope that helps! Enjoy the Disney Magic!

How to Get a Port Upgrade on your Disney Cruise

April 11, 2016 by Disney Cruise Mom 5 Comments

One thing that first time Disney cruisers (or any cruisers, for that matter) might not know is that sometimes you can try and upgrade your room while checking in for your cruise at the port.  Notice I said “try”.  Upgrades are not always available.  Disney Cruise Line does a pretty good job of filling up those ships.  On the majority of my cruises, there have been signs at the check-in desks saying “Mickey is sailing with a full ship.  No upgrades available.”  However, if you don’t see that sign when checking in and want to try and upgrade, here is what you need to know:

Port upgrades are not free.  There is a secret formula that Disney uses to determine what to charge each party, depending on room category booked, the upgraded room category, and number of nights/itinerary.  To my knowledge no one had managed to crack this formula.  Thus, you cannot find out the cost ahead of time.

To try for an upgrade, you must first check in at the counter like normal.  after you are done, you should go straight to the supervisor’s counter.  at port canaveral, this counter is all the way down at the right end of the line of check-in agents.  if you are not sure where to find it, just ask the agent checking you in and they will point you in the right direction., once at the counter, ask if there are any upgrades available.  if there are, the supervisor will look at a chart to determine what it will cost you.  if you accept the upgrade, the cost will be charged to your onboard account and you will be issued new room keys., dcl should take care of redirecting your checked luggage to your new room.  i have heard reports of this happening correctly and also not happening at all.  if your luggage hasn’t arrived at your new room after a while, i suggest going to your old room to see if it is sitting outside of it., it would make sense that you should get to the port as early as possible as that is when most upgrades would be available.  however, if you can’t be there right when it opens, don’t lose hope.  people that might be upgrading before you may be opening up rooms that are still a higher category than yours..

Have you tried upgrading from a regular room to a concierge level? Just curious if that’s possible and the prices are less than booking concierge in the first place.

November 11, 2018 at 9:21 am

Hi Eunice! Yes, you can upgrade from regular to concierge if there are any available, and prices tend to be about half-2/3 what it would have cost to book concierge in the first place.

Disney Magic Converting 11 Staterooms to Concierge Level

Disney Cruise Line will be converting eleven Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah (CAT 4A) into Concierge Family Oceanview Staterooms with Verandah (CAT 3A). The furnishings and amenities will be upgraded for sailings beginning May 5, 2023 and beyond, and will be available for booking beginning February 1, 2023.

The following 4A – Deluxe Family Oceanview with Verandah are being converted to Category 3A Concierge Family Oceanview Staterooms with Verandah:

The addition of these 11 staterooms will increase the total number of  concierge staterooms on the Disney Magic  to 44.

According to Disney, guests with existing reservations will not impacted by this change. However, these staterooms will continue to be Category 4A staterooms for available sail dates prior to May 5, 2023 and will not include Concierge level perks.

In January 2020, a similar change was announced , but the conversion was put on hold due to the industry shutdown .

The Disney Magic is [unofficially at this time] going to dry dock during a 21-night itinerary gap which starts on April 14, 2023 in New Orleans. The Disney Magic is scheduled to resume passenger service from San Juan, Puerto Rico on May 5th with an 8-Night Southern Caribbean Cruise .

I’ve sailed Concierge on the Disney Magic and I don’t think the Concierge Lounge would be big enough to handle the additional people. Are they expanding the lounge space as well?

' src=

No additional details were provided.

' src=

That’s exactly what I was thinking. At certain times, the Concierge Lounge on Magic was already crowded. It’s a very small area.

' src=

so fewer rooms for us common folk…

' src=

I’m surprised how many people purchase these type of rooms considering they are not eligible for the 10% onboard discount and are also non-refundable from the time you purchase

' src=

I’m more concerned about the impact to booking activities for the “rest of us”. We are Gold (thankfully nearing Platinum) and already on the Wish there are many things already sold out by Gold or the spa times etc are not good as the huge amount of Concierge squeezes out availability. I don’t think us moving to Platinum will help this much as in our cruise group it sounded like a lot of that stuff was gone after Concierge and didn’t even make it to Platinum.

I hear you. Getting ready for an 8 night to Bermuda in April. This is number 11. Still Gold. All excursions are booked up. Never been able to schedule a reservation at a Palo or Remy, Dinner or Brunch. You know they have NEVER advertised the Rainforest anywhere on any website. It is like a dirty little secret for the rich and famous. Couldn’t book it for any cruise if I wanted to. We have paid an outside travel agency to book our excursions for our 2 days in Bermuda. The sad thing is we take all our cash and spend it somewhere else. I have no use for another pair of ears.

' src=

I was on the Wish over NYE and the concierge hosts mentioned this. They said the Magic lounge is being expanded (kind of like the Wonder) to be able to hold more guests.

Disney cruise line cabin upgrades.

Disney Cruise Line, like all cruise lines, doesn’t always sail with a full ship.  There are usually cabins available of every type before the ship leaves the dock.  They are always willing to fill those cabins in exchange for more money.  Here is how you can attempt to upgrade your cabin type.

Port of Miami Terninal

All of our pictures are from our upgrade on the Disney Wonder out of Miami .  The layout of the cruise terminals in Miami and Port Canaveral are similar, so the instructions will work the same there as well.  You will enter the terminal, go through the security screening, and enter the line for your Castaway Club level to check in for the cruise.

Check into your appropriate line!

Once you check in for your cruise and receive your Keys To The World (KTTW) cards, take your entire party down towards the right hand side of all the check in lines.  You will head past all the check in lines to the Supervisor’s Desk (it is generally on the right hand side of the Concierge and Platinum line.  If you see a sign that says “ Captain Mickey says the ship is full, no upgrades available, ” then you are out of luck.

The Supervisor Desk is to the right of the Concierge and Platinum Check-in line

If the sign isn’t out, there are upgrades available.  Once you approach the desk (after waiting in line), you can see what type of staterooms are available.  They will ask for your KTTW card and see if there is an upgraded cabin available.  There are many times we have tried for an upgrade to find that the best upgrade they had corresponded to the class of cabin we already were in.

If there is an upgrade, they will tell you what is available and the price to upgrade (sorry, no pixie dust here).  There is a magical chart they consult that compares the cabin type you are in to the cabin type you want to move to.  I don’t have a copy of the chart, but our cost to move from a 9C Oceanview stateroom to a 5B Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah was about $400 for a 5 night cruise on the Disney Wonder.  I imagine the price on the Dream or Fantasy would be much cheaper for that move given the number of verandah rooms.

ov1

If you accept and pay the price difference, you will receive new KTTW cards for your entire party.  They will also start the process of getting anything destined for your old stateroom rerouted to the new stateroom, including luggage, Castaway Club welcome gifts, and stateroom credits.  We didn’t have a problem with any of these items, but we did need to tell our stateroom attendant where our bags might have been sent after we didn’t see them for a bit.  He happily retrieved them and we were all set.

Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah

We retained everything else that we had setup for our cruise, including excursions, dining times, and activities.  Upgrading our room from an 9C Oceanview stateroom to a 5B Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah would have cost $1200 if we had done it at the time of booking.  Waiting to upgrade at the terminal cost only $400.

The downside of upgrading at the port is that if you have your heart set on a stateroom upgrade and you have a late port arrival time (or if there are not a lot of upgrades available), you may be disappointed.  For example, for the cruise where we upgraded, we received the last available verandah room on the ship.  We have sailed many times in Oceanview rooms and would have been happy to do so again.  We always suggest booking the cabin type you will be happy with, as an upgrade isn’t always guaranteed.

How to choose the best Disney Cruise Stateroom for you

By Alisha Molen

Have you decided which Disney Cruise you want to take? Great!

Once you have decided which Disney cruise itinerary is right for you, here is the next step:

Select the perfect stateroom!

Your Disney Cruise stateroom will be your home away from home for a few days and nights. It is also an important factor in the overall cost of your cruise.

What You Should Know about Disney Cruise Staterooms

Disney Cruise Line staterooms are tailored especially to families.

From split bathrooms, to bathtubs, to beds that pop out of the ceiling, to extra storage space and more, Disney has thought of everything!

In fact, their standard cabins are about 25% bigger than standard cabins on other cruise lines. Don’t get me wrong, they are still much smaller than a hotel room, but bigger than the cruise industry average.

Whatever your budget and taste, Disney Cruise Line has accommodations for every traveller. Stateroom options range from cozy and comfortable to grand and luxurious.

What Comes Standard in Every Stateroom?

First, it’s good to know what comes standard in every Disney Cruise Line stateroom:

  • A queen bed (not two twins pushed together)
  • Seating area
  • Desk area with chair and dedicated lighting
  • Privacy curtains that separate sleeping and seating areas
  • Storage: 2 closets, under bed storage space, dresser drawers
  • Hooks for towels
  • Hangers (if you need more, ask your stateroom host/hostess)
  • A mini refrigerator
  • A hairdryer
  • Television (satellite) and in-room movies
  • Full length mirror
  • In-room safes for wallets, passports, phones etc
  • Electrical outlets
  • “Wave Phones” that allow you to call and text both onboard and at Castaway Cay
  • H20 Plus -branded shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, lotion and soap
  • Housekeeping services twice a day—Morning cleaning and nightly turndown service
  • Life jackets for each person
  • Blackout curtains (staterooms with exterior windows)
  • Split bathrooms (in most staterooms)
  • Bathtubs (in most staterooms)

About those Bathtubs

I love the fact that Disney Cruise Line has a bathtub in almost every stateroom! (Accessible rooms have roll-in showers instead of tubs.)

This is not the norm for most cruise lines.

With little kids a tub is kind of a must so it’s nice Disney thought of it all. Naturally they aren’t as big as your tub at home but they should do the trick for your kiddos.

For adults? I’d probably stick with the shower.

What is Not Included in Your Stateroom

Now that we covered what is in the stateroom, here are some items that are not included :

  • Coffeemaker
  • Ironing board

The Four Kinds of Disney Cruise Stateroom

The staterooms on Disney Cruise Line ships can be broken down into four types:

Within each of these 4 stateroom types, there are a number of “ categories ” available.

These “categories” indicate a variance within that room type such as standard or deluxe , a type of verandah, or the location - by deck or area of the ship (forward, midship, or aft).

What Do These Category Numbers Mean?

When it’s time to reserve a cabin, you’ll notice each Disney Cruise stateroom has a “category” and “number” assigned to it.

Example: 5A - Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah

These can be confusing until you learn these simple rules:

1) The higher the “number”, the less expensive the stateroom

Staterooms start at category 11 (inside staterooms) and descend to category 4 (verandah staterooms). The Concierge is the most expensive and doesn’t start with a number at all.

This is handy to know because if you compare a Category 7 stateroom with a Category 6, you know at a glance that the 7 is less expensive.

2) The “letter” indicates a location on the ship

For example, 9B is a mid-ship oceanview stateroom while 9C is forward-ship oceanview stateroom. Same floor plan, just maybe on a different deck or different part of the ship.

If there are multiple sub-categories available within a category - such as 9A, 9B, 9C, 9D - then “A” will be the most expensive and most desirable and “D” the least expensive. Of course, “most desirable” is completely subjective so take it with a grain of salt and the price difference between the subcategories is fairly minimal.

How Many Guests Can Sleep in a Stateroom?

Most regular staterooms sleeps 3-4 with a handful that sleep 5. There are also Concierge staterooms that can sleep up to 7. If you have 5+ guests in your party, check out Bonus Tip #1 below.

How to Choose Your Stateroom

Here are our recommended steps for picking the best stateroom for your voyage:

Now...Find Your Stateroom by Ship

Here's a stateroom guide by ship: >> Disney Magic & Disney Wonder Stateroom Guide >> Disney Dream & Disney Fantasy Stateroom Guide >> Disney Wish Stateroom Guide

BONUS TIPS FOR SELECTING A STATEROOM

1) big family consider connecting staterooms.

If your group has more than 4 guests, you'll have a couple of different options for staterooms.

  • A Family Oceanview stateroom or a Suite (sleeps 5 to 7 guests)
  • Two connecting staterooms (sleeps up to 8 guests)

Connecting staterooms are two rooms that have a door between the adjoining wall.

You can leave the door always open to keep an eye on the little ones in the other room, or close it for privacy. It’s kinda like having your own little two-bedroom suite but for less moo-lah.

Which brings me to my next point...

Many times, getting two connecting staterooms is cheaper than one Family Oceanview stateroom or Suite. Crunch the numbers and see what will work best for your family.

NOTE: Just remember that you must have at least one adult booked in each stateroom.

How many connecting staterooms are on each ship?

There are 137 connecting staterooms on both the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder.

On both the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, there are over 500 connecting staterooms.

How do you know which rooms connect?

When selecting a stateroom, look for the little “doors” that open in between the cabins. If there are doors on the adjoining wall, that means it’s a connecting room.

For example, in the photo below, cabins 7064 and 7066 connect.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

2) View of Beach at Castaway Cay

Want a view of the beach when in dock at Castaway Cay ?

Book a room on the starboard (right) side of the ship.

Disney ships will usually back into Castaway Cay’s dock, so the port (left) side cabins will face the dock and the tram area while the starboard (right) side cabins will face the beaches on Castaway Cay.

Just know, this is not a guarantee.

Sometimes there are conditions that will require docking in the opposite direction.

3) If You’re On the Fence About a Verandah

First things first...let's start with this question:

What is a verandah?

A verandah stateroom on a Disney Cruise Line ship is simply a room with a balcony attached.

It is a wonderful experience to stand on your verandah and breathe in the fresh ocean air.

A DCL verandah also offers extra visibility when at port or sailing through a particularly scenic area.

If you’re debating whether to add the additional expense of a verandah (instead of an oceanview) cabin, here are some points to consider in favor of a verandah:

  • Verandahs are more valuable on cruises where there is a lot of scenery. Alaska, Panama, and Mediterranean itineraries, for example.
  • If you have a young child that will require a lot of naps in your stateroom, having a verandah gives the parent a place to escape to look at the view, read a book, and enjoy some room service while you wait with the little one.

4) To Avoid Noise, Have Staterooms All Around You

By booking a stateroom that has other cabins above, below and to all sides, you're able to insulate yourself from any possible ship noise (laundry, sundecks, engine, restaurants, theatres, etc).

5) Request a Crib When You Book

You can request a crib for your baby when you book your cruise. If you have already booked your cruise, go to My Reservations to make your request.

Disney Cruise Concierge Level Upgrade: A Mixed Review

Debating whether to upgrade to the Disney Cruise Concierge Level for your next sailing? We give our honest review of whether this upgrade is worth the splurge .

Luxury comes in many shapes and sizes, especially on a cruise. When it comes to Disney Cruise Lines, guests will already experience a magical voyage, so is it worth upgrading to the premium Disney Concierge Level? Our honest answer is not really; however, it is worth considering if the price is right.

Is Disney Concierge-Level Worth the Upgrade?

Hopping aboard the Disney Magic, we set sail in our Concierge-Level Stateroom to decide if this were an upgrade we would be willing to splurge on again. Top-notch service and exceptional experiences happen at every stateroom level on Disney Cruise lines. So why upgrade? Let’s break down each benefit of the Concierge Level to see how Disney elevates their service and amenities for this elite class level.

What’s Included In A Disney Cruise Concierge Level Stateroom?

Priority boarding.

Concierge:  Having a coveted group one boarding pass means that you are one of the first people to get to board the ship. Even better is that Concierge Passengers have their own priority check-in line, where they skip waiting with those in the main boarding line. Inform a Disney Cast Member of your Concierge status, and they will whisk you away to the Concierge Line.

These perks will allow you to have extra time on the ship to explore, enjoy a sit-down lunch and swim before the pools get busy.

Priority Boarding On Disney Cruise Lines

Remember to pack your swimsuit in the bag you are bringing onboard because it could be a few hours before your stateroom is ready and you receive your luggage. Check out our  Disney Cruise Packing List,  so you come prepared.

Non-Concierge:  Guests will choose their preferred boarding arrival time according to their Castaway Club Status. Castaway Club status depends on the number of sailings you have had with Disney. Guests will arrive at their boarding time and can wait to clear security and check-in. Depending on your boarding time, this could go quickly, or you may have to wait 30 minutes to an hour.

Takeaway:  If you are a first-time cruiser nervous about embarkation day, having Concierge will relieve stress. Disney does not offer priority boarding outside of Concierge, so this elite.

As a frequent cruiser, I am okay with waiting to board the ship. However, being able to bypass the lines made me feel like a celebrity. Getting on board the vessel first does have its perks, with the pools and slide being practically empty! However, arriving at a later boarding time has its perks as well. There are fewer lines at the port terminal, once onboard the lunch rush is over and your stateroom will likely be ready or close to it.

Pre-Access To Experiences With Concierge

Concierge:  One of the top reasons guests enjoy booking a concierge room is that they have priority access to all experiences available to book on the ship. If you are a first-time Disney Cruiser, this is a significant perk, since your reservation window will open last. Here are just a few of the things concierge guests get to reserve before the rest of the guests:

  • Activities at Castaway Cay, including private Cabanas (on select sailings)
  •  Adult-exclusive dining reservations
  •  Port Adventures
  •  Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique
  •  Royal Court Royal Tea & Olaf’s Royal Picnic (on select sailings)
  •  Virtual Sports/Golf Simulator (on select sailings)
  •  Beverage Tastings
  •  Senses Spa Appointments
  •  It’s A Small World Nursery
  •  Dining rotation and seating requests
  •  Character meet and greets such as Royal Gathering

Once onboard, guests can access a Concierge Team to assist with special requests, additional bookings, or any questions.

A review of the Royal Court Royal Tea

Non-Concierge:  Guests will have to wait for the booking window to open up to be able to reserve experiences. Often first-time cruisers will not be able to get experiences in high demand as they usually are booked up before their booking window opens.

Takeaway:   The value of this perk comes down to each family individually. On a personal note, there are so many great things to do on the ship that it isn’t a deal breaker if I don’t get a particular reservation or activity. At the same time, other families find specific experiences a must-do for their vacation, especially for kids, such as the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique and the Royal Court Royal Tea.

One sure way to make sure you get all the experiences you want, book a Concierge Level Room.

SIDE NOTE:  If you still need to read my review about the  Royal Court Royal Tea , I recommend it before spending your money.

Welcome Lunch

Concierge:  Depending on the Disney Cruise Line Ship you are sailing a designated dining room has been reserved for Concierge Guests to enjoy a special Embarkation Lunch. The lunch menu mimics the regular Embarkation Day menu. However, guests are allowed to order complimentary alcoholic beverages. During the lunch, your concierge hosts will introduce themselves, confirm any onboard activities, and welcome you aboard.

Welcome Lunch

Non-Concierge:  Guests can enjoy a sit-down lunch in one of the designated main dining rooms, enjoy one of the quick service restaurants poolside or hit the buffet at Cabanas.

Takeaway:  The lunch was nothing to write home about. You could find comparable lunch offerings elsewhere on the ship. While it is nice to have a table waiting for you, I was expecting a little more.

The Cocktail Trolley

Concierge:  One of the unique offerings was a daily visit from the Cocktail Trolley. The Fairy God Mother must have known this was the wish of many cruisers as nearly all Concierge Level Guests were in their staterooms at 5:00 pm waiting for the Cocktail Trolley to appear!

Cocktail Trolley on the Disney Magic

We were onboard the Disney Magic, and the trolley would make its rounds daily between 5:00 pm-6:00 pm. Guests were able to get craft cocktails made right outside their door. If there wasn’t a spirit on the trolley that you enjoyed, you could always request it. It would appear on the trolley the following evening. The cocktail trolley also offers plenty of mocktail options and canned drinks to restock your stateroom.

Non-Concierge:  Many bars throughout the ship will serve craft cocktails and alcoholic beverages; however, you will have to purchase them.

Takeaway:   Concierge Level does  NOT  include a drink package offering unlimited alcoholic drinks. Therefore, it is a nice perk to get complimentary drinks. Each drink costs between $9-$18, which can add up quickly.

Concierge Level Stateroom

Concierge-level staterooms come in different categories depending on which ship you are sailing. Concierge royal suites are the most luxurious featuring a master bedroom, living room, and dining table, along with a private verandah whirlpool (on select ships such as the Disney Fantasy, Disney Wish, and Disney Dream ). Other popular options are the Concierge 1-bedroom, and 2-bedroom suites are available, along with Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah.

Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah on the Disney Magic

Stepping into the Concierge rooms, you will notice that they are slightly more elegant than the standard rooms, with a more plush sofa, lush carpeting, and warm wood finishes.

One noticeable difference besides the extra square footage was the premier bedding in Disney Cruise Line Concierge Level Staterooms. Concierge Suites may choose from pillow options, including hypoallergenic, feather, and therapeutic memory foam. I slept like a baby with the Custom Premium Plush Euro-top mattress, down duvets, and picking a pillow from their pillow menu.

Step into your cozy soft bathrobes and slippers that you can use during your cruise. All staterooms have upgraded toiletries and a refrigerator stocked with complimentary bottled water and sodas of your choice (restocked every day).

Dinner Delivery

If you stay in a Concierge stateroom with a dining table, you can have dinner delivered to your stateroom from the main dining room. Palo delivery is even available to the Royal Suite guests.

Special Gifts

We were surprised to receive a special gift from our Concierge Team. It was a lovely Limited Edition Commemorative Lithograph. While gifts are not guaranteed, it was a magical touch that was not overlooked. Upon further research, it is common for Concierge Guests to receive gifts throughout their stay, including a fruit basket, champagne, and other fun treats.

Castaway Cay members are often greeted with a welcome gift in their stateroom upon arrival, regardless of stateroom status.

Standard Staterooms:  While standard staterooms may not have the extra space or upgraded amenities, they make a perfect home away from home. Various stateroom categories are available to help meet the needs of each family sailing.

Standard Verandah Stateroom On Disney Cruise Line

Takeaway:  If you are looking for a room that sleeps six or more, consider booking two staterooms or splurging on one of the concierge suites. While the plush bedding and premier amenities were excellent, it wouldn’t be the main reason I would sail Concierge again. Mainly because of how little time our family spent in the stateroom.

The Concierge Lounge

Concierge Lounge On The Disney Magic

Concierge:  The Concierge Lounge is exclusively reserved for guests in the Concierge Suites. The Concierge Lounge offers a variety of gourmet offers, including continental breakfast, afternoon tea, dessert offerings, and In-Lounge Cocktail Hours.

Concierge Lounge Light Snacks

Here is a brief breakdown of the Daily  Offerings At The Concierge Lounge:

  • Continental Breakfast 7:00am to 10:30am (Debarkation morning 6:30am-8:30am)
  •  Lunch Snacks 11:00 am to 2:00 pm
  •  Afternoon Tea 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm
  •  Dinner Snacks 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm
  •  Dessert Offerings 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm
  •  In-Lounge Cocktail Hours 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm

The Concierge Lounge offers a variety of soft drinks, bottled water, specialty coffees, teas & hot chocolates throughout the day. They have an excellent expresso machine to create custom lattes and cappuccinos.

Expresso Machine inside the Concierge Lounge

The Concierge Sun Deck is off the lounge offering an exclusive area with lounge chairs, light snacks, sunscreen, and non-alcoholic beverages such as dole whips! Bigger ships like the Disney Dream have a larger sun deck with various seating options; some ships even have hot tubs.

Concierge Sun Deck On Disney Magic

Non-Concierge : Guests can access many of the ship’s lounges and dining options throughout the day. Loungers are on a first-come, first-served basis by the pools and sun decks.

Takeaway:  I often found myself in the Concierge Lounge in the morning for coffee because it was better than the dining room coffee. There was so much food on the ship, so we only came occasionally to snack. My daughter, on the other hand, loved checking out the treats.

The happy hour in the Concierge Lounge was one perk I enjoyed and would have me consider booking the Concierge.

A brief breakdown : If you get three drinks a day at $15 a piece, you would be paying $315 a person for a seven-day cruise.

Early Access To The Walt Disney Theatre

Concierge:  A great perk of Concierge is getting early access to the Walt Disney Theatre 45 minutes before the show. Guests will enter the theatre through an exclusive entrance with the Concierge Team. Complimentary popcorn and soft drinks are provided. If you are a concierge, guests can flash their gold Key To the World Card at the refreshment stand to get complimentary popcorn if they arrive after priority seating.

Early Access To The Walt Disney Theatre

Non-Concierge:  Doors open 30 minutes before the show with open seating. The Broadway shows are spectacular and not to be missed. I recommend arriving at the theater a little before doors open to snag a great seat. Guests can opt to purchase popcorn for the show. The show is offered twice to accommodate both dinner times.

Takeaway : Having prime seating for the shows was ideal when you have kids. They will be able to see the characters and be close to all the action. Waiting for the show can prove problematic once they are bored with the popcorn, so plan on bringing a small activity or toy to keep them entertained till the show starts.

Priority Cabana Reservations on Castaway Cay

If lounging in a Castaway Cay beach cabana is your dream, then the Concierge is one of the best ways to make that reality. Reservations for these highly desired cabanas are open to Concierge guests and Platinum Castaway Club Members before anyone else. Often, other guests do not get an opportunity to reserve because they are all booked when their reservation window opens.

Character Meet-N-Greet

Concierge:  A small perk of Concierge is that they occasionally have a character meet-n-greet in the Concierge Lounge. While this did not happen during our 7-day cruise, it has on others.

Character Strolls on Disney Magic

Non-Concierge:  Character meet-n-greets happen throughout the ship during the cruise. Check the Navigator App to see who will be out and when.

Takeaway:  Character meet-n-greets happen throughout the day onboard the ship. I didn’t find this perk particularly appealing since I could see all the characters many times throughout our cruise. You would never have to wait long, either.

Priority Disembarkation

Concierge:  The best perk is that Concierge Guests are offered priority debark assistance. If you have cruised before, you know how to long it can take to disembark a ship. After enjoying one last breakfast in the lounge, Concierge Guests receive one final perk. From 7:15 until 8:00 am, a Concierge host provides priority debark assistance. It is one of the most appealing perks for anyone who has ever waited in line to disembark a ship. One elevator becomes key access only for those 45 minutes, and the host escorts Guests to the gangway.

Coffee at the Concierge Lounge on Disney Magic

Note:  Concierge guests can order breakfast from room service on the last morning.

Non-Concierge:  Guests must be out of their staterooms by 8:15 am and off the ship by 9:45. You will be given a luggage tag with a character the evening before disembarkation. In the morning, you will have to wait until your character group is called before disembarking the ship.

While you wait, breakfast options are available. Many guests opt for Cabanas for convenience, while some may enjoy breakfast at the dining room during their disembark breakfast time. Room service is not available on disembarkation day.

Takeaway:  Not having to wait to disembark the ship was a significant perk, especially since we had an earlier flight. If you are driving or have a later flight, the priority disembark isn’t going to be a game changer. However, it is nice not to wait around the ship for your character to be called.

Is Disney Cruise Concierge Level Worth It?

The Concierge Level offers many excellent features and perks that enhance your cruise. I would recommend it for special occasions, families who need extra space or traveling with young children. Sailing Concierge-level will spoil you with priority embarkation and disembarkation, happy hours, and pre-access to experiences. However, the Concierge still left a lot to be desired for the price tag that comes with it.

Disney Magic

If you spend $30,000 more than a verandah room for the concierge level, it should include a magic lamp to wish for your money back. The Concierge is not worth more than a $2000-$3000 upgrade unless you book one of the larger suites, in my personal opinion.

Larger families wishing to stay together will find the Concierge suites an excellent option for the extra space, special treatment, and amenities.

Many Concierge cruisers will swear by the concierge experience. However, as a budget-friendly traveler who enjoys splurging on luxury, I did not find this worth the spend. While many of the exclusive offerings were nice, I found the ship as a whole to be a luxury experience on its own.

Happy Hour for Disney Concierge Guests

Without Concierge, I had access to the same great service, excellent snacks, soft drinks, and entertainment. However, I did have to wait until my reservation window opened to make reservations for all the experiences. We missed out on the Royal Court Royal Tea once and the Royal Gathering past cruises. Mainly because we were first-time cruisers, and the experiences were fully booked when our reservation window opened.

Pricing For Concierge-Level Staterooms

Concierge Level pricing will differ based on cruise date, cruise ship, the length of the cruise, and destination. I recommend looking at different Disney Cruise Line sailings to get an idea of how vastly different the pricing can be. There are sailings where the Concierge Rooms go as high as $60,000 for two people. It is mind-boggling that a concierge-level room can cost as more as a new car.

If you want to experience a Concierge Level Room, look at shorter cruises and check all of the sailing dates for the most affordable option. Longer cruises have higher price tags, such as a 7-day Alaskan Cruise, or themed cruises, such as Halloween On The High Seas .

Alaska Cruise Pricing For Concierge

Our Disney cruise was exceptional; we left with remarkable memories and a placeholder for another cruise. The Concierge team became our family onboard the ship and knew each of us by name from day one. It was a once-in-a-life experience that I can only dream will happen again.

Upgrading your Disney Cruise Line Cabin at the Pier

P1030218.JPG

Want to change your cabin before the start of your cruise? You can try upgrading at the pier for a significant savings.

Other cruise lines open up upgrades for people before the cruise sailing for a savings, Disney however keeps the posted price until the cruise, and then will drop it to let people move up categories once they have arrived at port.

This is the story of our quest to upgrade at the port prior to a 7 night cruise aboard the Disney Fantasy at the end of January.

In order to optimize our chances at getting an upgrade, we needed to arrive early at the port. Since we hadn’t secured the earliest port arrival time (the time Disney would allow to enter the port,) I decided to take Disney’s Magical Express to get our family to the pier. Our plan was to get on the 8:15 a.m. bus from the Orlando Airport Marriott Lakeside but we had just missed it and ended up on the 8:30 bus back to the airport.  By the time we arrived at the airport, there was already a decent line forming for Magical Express check in to the port. I took my son and got in line to check in while my husband waited for the items to off load from the Marriott bus and then get them on the Disney luggage truck. (The luggage was placed on a truck right next to where we were dropped off by the Marriott bus and would next be seen delivered to door of our cabin on the ship.) Disney started checking us in shortly after we arrived which was around 8:45 a.m.  We made it on the second bus to leave the airport that morning and sat about 6-10 rows back. We were probably on our way to the port around 9:15 a.m.

Upon arriving at the port around 10 and them doing their schpeal before we could exit the bus, we were somehow first to the security line. (My husband even caught up after getting our car seat and stroller from the bottom of the bus items.) We went straight to check in at the Castaway Club line and were only a handful of desks away from the port upgrades line at the end of the row. They speedily checked us in and got us to the upgrade line by 10:23 a.m. There were family verandah concierge rooms available as well as one 1 bedroom- cabin 12000. But the price had just doubled from earlier reports. The family verandah (category v) went for $1,500 and the 1 bedroom for $3,000 based on our booked category of a deck 6 family verandah. [Disney bases the price of the upgraded cabin from the category that you were booked into, to the category that you want to go to.] That $3,000 made me sooo bummed but ultimately we pulled the trigger and we LOVED everything about cabin 12000. [Check out our pictorial review .]

The next item of business for us was securing a cabana at Castaway Cay. We positioned ourselves to not be pushy but to be the first in the concierge area to get aboard the ship once it was time. Once on board we went straight to the lounge (we didn’t stop for pictures or to look around).  Our strategy paid off as we were first to talk to a concierge host. We explained that we just upgraded and were wondering if there were any cabanas available and if not we’d like to be wait listed. We were first on the wait list and Tuesday morning we were told that they were able to secure us a cabana on the family beach. (Apparently the wait list was pages and pages long.) Sadly this cabana never made it into fruition as our ship wasn’t able to stop at Castaway Cay because there was some mechanical trouble during our cruise …

That is how you upgrade at the port to a concierge cabin. It was stressful. Once we had made the decision to try and upgrade, we really just wanted the upgrade.  Since we spend a lot of time in the room, we learned that for now we will just book into this category from the start when it’s not cost prohibitive.

Have you upgraded at the pier? What was your experience? Or is it on your list?

Hi. I heard you on a YouTube podcast discussing your last minute upgrade to concierge on your Disney cruise. You mentioned that your husband was actually booked in a separate stateroom with your mother. Did you have any problems bringing him into the concierge lounge? I am planning a cruise for a family of 5 and am considering booking 2 in concierge and 3 in a cat 4a. I’m wondering whether the 3 booked not in concierge will be able to go into the lounge with me? I really appreciate your taking the time to share your expertise.

The official line would be only those registered can enter the lounge. As for my husband, he was actually moved into our cabin at the start of the cruise. My mom is a single, and it doesn’t make sense for her to pay for a minimum of 2 in a cabin if we have 3. In my experience, I’ve successfully had my mom come to the lounge on 2 different cruises. She doesn’t drink alcohol, and frankly neither does my husband, so I feel like I’m cheating less. The hosts were always very polite to my mom and there was never a problem. One thing is that unless you are on a classic ship, your other cabin will be pretty far away from the concierge cabin. If you do it this way- I’d at least move one of those 3 into your cabin a the start of the cruise, so less people are “sneaking” in. 🙂

Thanks so much for the prompt reply. I will certainly follow your advice!

Is Disney Cruise Line concierge level worth it? We tested it to find out.

Summer Hull

When you sail on a Disney cruise, everyone gets access to included food, good service and great entertainment. But there's a class of cabins and guests that get a little bit of extra pixie dust — Disney Cruise Line concierge guests.

Disney Cruise Line sits toward the pricier end of the cruising spectrum, even in the most basic of staterooms. But let's assume you've already decided that the cost to cruise with Disney — with the Disney characters, access to an included rotating dining room schedule and evening Broadway-caliber Disney shows — is worth it for you.

Looking at the cabin and amenity options available on Disney cruise ships, you may eventually go further down the rabbit (er, mouse) hole and wonder if Disney Cruise Line's concierge-level rooms and service are worth an additional premium.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

To answer this question, we've sailed in a concierge-level room (twice) to see what exactly all that extra cash gets you on Disney Wonder and, more recently, on the new Disney Wish . Here's what we found out about Disney Cruise Line concierge-level rooms, benefits, service and lounge, and whether or not the perks are worth the additional cost.

What is Disney Cruise Line's concierge level?

Disney Cruise Line's concierge level is similar in some ways to a club-level room at a Disney World or Disneyland resort hotel. You pay more for this type of accommodation in exchange for access to a lounge, more attentive service and additional benefits. But the extras for concierge service on a Disney cruise ship actually go much further than the added benefits of a club room at the Disney parks.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Those who decide to spend the extra cash for a concierge-level room will be spoiled with earlier booking dates for excursions and activities, special onboard meals and offerings, the ability to book cabanas at Disney's Castaway Cay private island before others, early access to the theater in the evening to nab the best seats and a private lounge to utilize on the ship.

To access the concierge level on a Disney cruise, you have to book a concierge room type, and the benefits and upgraded service then convey with that cabin type. It's not an add-on you can tack onto an otherwise non-concierge stateroom.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Stateroom types within that concierge class of rooms start at the verandah-level room (i.e., a cabin with a private balcony) and go up in price and size to include a variety of suites. If you're already thinking you want to book a suite, you don't also have to decide about concierge level; you will automatically get Disney Cruise Line's concierge service included with your premium accommodations.

However, if you plan to book a cabin with a balcony, you will need to decide whether you want a room with the standard inclusions or if you want to upgrade to a concierge room with a balcony and all the extra Disney Cruise Line concierge benefits. The difference can be thousands of dollars.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

When I priced out Disney Cruise Line concierge rooms, cruise fares started at just over $3,000 for a short sailing for two people. Prices go up to tens of thousands of dollars for concierge level for the larger suites or on longer sailings.

Disney Cruise Line concierge benefits

Booking a concierge-level room on a Disney cruise brings many perks beyond access to the physical concierge lounge. Here's a quick summary of some of the Disney Cruise Line concierge benefits.

  • Priority booking of activities and excursions 120 days before sailing.
  • Priority boarding — be among the first on the ship.
  • Access to the concierge lounge with included food and drinks.
  • Complimentary wine, beer and spirits in the concierge lounge in the evenings.
  • Free popcorn in the movie theaters.
  • Priority seating for the evening shows.
  • Priority walk-off on debarkation day.
  • Room service ordering of hot breakfast or dinner from the main restaurants.
  • Access to knowledgeable and helpful concierge hosts.

To appreciate the value of these perks, you have to understand how activity bookings work on a Disney cruise. Most cruise lines, including Disney, have an elite status pecking order in terms of when you can board, book premium onboard restaurants, make spa appointments, secure shore excursions and schedule onboard activities.

On Disney Cruise Line, first-time cruisers can make those bookings starting 75 days before sailing. That sounds like plenty of time, but unfortunately, those who have sailed with Disney before can make the bookings 90 to 120 days before setting sail, depending on their Castaway Club status .

However, if you book concierge level, the concierge team asks for your activity preferences via email 125 days before your sail date. They put in your requests precisely when the 120-day booking window opens, so essentially no one can book anything before you. This jump-start increases the odds that you get the spa times, onboard tastings, adults-only restaurant reservations and excursions you want.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Notably, if you want to book a private cabana at Castaway Cay, you basically have to sail in concierge level or have a high tier of status within the Disney Cruise Line program to snag one, as they book up quickly. This strategy works better on Disney's smaller ships; Disney Wish has so many concierge rooms that there's no guarantee you'll get a private cabana if everyone else is vying for the opportunity, as well.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Those in a concierge-level suite can also order from an expanded room service menu that includes meals from a main dining room on the ship. This is the only way to get a hot breakfast delivered to your stateroom.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Disney Cruise Line concierge guests also get priority tendering to ports, when required. Thanks to priority boarding times on embarkation day, we were the third family to come aboard when we sailed on Disney Wonder, which meant we got several more hours on the ship than we did on our first cruise. Boarding first also meant we had the pools and slides to ourselves for a long time.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Port Canaveral, the departure port for several Disney cruise ships, offers an entire lounge with a stocked fridge where concierge guests can wait before boarding starts for that group. Your special treatment starts before you even walk on board.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Once onboard, plan on stopping by the exclusive embarkation-day lunch for concierge-level guests, so you can avoid the lunchtime crowds and get to know your concierge host team. While it's not mandatory to attend, the lunch is a good way to kick off your cruise (before or after you've gotten in any early swimming you want to do).

Pro tip: Get the welcome-aboard sundae if it's on offer.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

For me, the best part of the concierge magic is the final thing the concierge staff can do for you on the last morning of your sailing.

On our first cruise, getting off the ship literally took hours. We burned off our "vacation high" in a hurry. But when you cruise in the concierge level, you can enjoy a light breakfast in the lounge, and then the staff can take you and your luggage down a private elevator and straight to the walkway off the ship. Debarkation takes mere minutes.

This may not sound impressive until you've done it the other way, battling thousands of cruisers also ready to disembark. I'm here to tell you that experiencing no lines, no stress and no regrets as the concierge staff escorted us off the ship made for an easier transition back into the real world.

Inside the Disney concierge lounge

The physical concierge lounge is a tangible hallmark of Disney Cruise Line's concierge-level service.

On Disney Wonder, the lounge is located midship on Deck 10, which is almost as high as you can go on the ship. On Disney Wish, the concierge lounge is on decks 12 and 13, which was also one of the topmost decks on that ship.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

You must use your keycard to get into the lounge. Near the entrance, concierge staff are waiting to assist you; they will quickly get to know you over the course of the cruise. The staff are basically your cruise fairy godparents. (On the flip side, they'd totally know if you tried to bring in a non-concierge guest, so don't do that.)

The lounges themselves each have a food and beverage area (with a great coffee machine!), along with various seating areas. On Disney Wish, the lounge had a good-sized bar, plus hot tubs and a small pool deck just for concierge guests.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Except on debarkation day and for a private Disney character meet-and-greet when we sailed on Disney Wonder in early 2020, the lounge was rarely crowded during our visits.

In the concierge lounge, you'll find light snacks and small plates that rotate throughout the day with some treats you can only get in this lounge.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

On Disney Wish, we enjoyed the lunchtime sushi rolls that we only found in the concierge lounge. We loved to pop in for a snack or dessert for the kids. Since the lounge was so close to the concierge rooms on Wish, it was logistically simpler to grab a quick breakfast or snack there rather than heading over to the main onboard restaurants.

But what I truly loved about Disney's concierge lounge was the help-yourself-fridge. We stocked the mini-fridge in our stateroom from this main fridge, as well as loaded our backpack before shore excursions.

Each evening, complimentary beer, wine and spirits are served in the lounge by bartenders who seemed to know everyone's names by the second evening. Don't worry if you don't drink or you want something for your kids, mocktails and alcohol-free "daiquiris" were available upon request.

Disney Cruise Line concierge rooms

Disney Cruise Line concierge rooms generally start at the oceanview with verandah level, and they will be clearly labeled as concierge rooms when booking. Disney Wish also offers a few 357-square-foot family oceanview rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows without verandahs within the concierge class, too.

If you're looking for more space, the ships have one-bedroom, two-bedroom and specialty suites (like the insane 1,966-square-foot Tower Suite on Disney Wish). As previously mentioned, all Disney Cruise Line suites come with included concierge access and services.

On Disney Wish, we qualified for concierge access by sailing in a 608-square-foot one-bedroom suite that was just a few doors down from the concierge lounge. It had a master bedroom with a king-sized bed, gorgeous bathroom with a Tangled-inspired mosaic over the bathtub, living room with a couch that converted to a bed and a dining area with a table for four. The divider between the living and dining spaces contained a Murphy bed that pulled down into an additional single bed. The suite more than comfortably slept my two kids, my mom and me.

On Disney Wonder, we had a slightly larger 614-square-foot one-bedroom suite that also conveyed concierge benefits. This suite actually felt more spacious than the one on Wish, though clearly has a more classical look. In both cases, we were royally spoiled with space and service compared to a more standard cruise cabin.

How much do Disney Cruise concierge rooms cost?

Cruise prices vary dramatically, and that's especially true when you start layering in concierge benefits with Disney Cruise Line.

Looking about a year out on a short three-night Disney cruise from Florida to the Bahamas (including a stop at Disney's Castaway Cay), prices for an interior stateroom start at $1,554 for double occupancy or $2,555 for a family of four. On the same cruise, a non-concierge verandah room starts at $1,950 for two or $3,051 for four.

The lowest-level concierge stateroom (with verandah) starts at $3,180 for two or $4,411 for a family of four.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

For that extra $1,500 to go up to concierge level, you get access to a little more time on the ship, are likely able to book exactly what you want with no stress, enjoy included evening drinks in the lounge, have snacks at the ready, get free popcorn at the movies, order hot room service breakfast (if you book a suite) and more.

Will almost doubling the cost of the cruise for those extras be worth it to everyone? Absolutely not.

In fact, I recommend against it for your first sailing on Disney Wish unless money is no object. That's because you'll feel compelled to spend your leisure and meal times in the concierge lounge when you should be out exploring all the ship has to offer and experiencing the food and entertainment at Disney's included restaurants.

For travelers who really enjoy lounges, streamlining all the processes, having access to free-flowing drinks and want the highest level of service, I'd argue that a concierge-level cabin can be worth it for a special occasion or once-in-a-lifetime Disney cruise.

On the other hand, for a seven-night Alaska cruise for a family of four, prices start around $7,000 for an interior stateroom, a verandah room is more than $11,000, and a concierge room currently starts at a staggering minimum of over $30,000. In that case, you'll probably never find me in a concierge room simply due to the cost.

Is Disney Cruise concierge level worth it?

You don't need to spend the extra money to book a concierge room to have a great cruise with Disney. It's already a premium cruise experience. But if you are debating whether concierge level is worth it, I'll try and help you decide.

For us, the biggest perks were the advance booking for meals and activities that wouldn't have been easy for a regular Disney cruiser to secure. The evening lounge drinks, free popcorn at the movies, available sunscreen and help from the concierge staff when our plans would change at the last minute (which happened a few times) were also pretty great.

The private deck on Disney Wish was nice, too.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

I'd 100% book Disney concierge level again and would say it can be worth it — mostly on the shorter cruises where every minute matters more than it would on a seven- to 10-day cruise. Additionally, on those shorter cruises, you are more likely to have the stamina to not miss the evening lounge happy hours and to drop in a few times to try some of the snacks.

Those shorter cruises are also when there are fewer opportunities to fit in the adults-only restaurants, spa treatments, drink tastings and onshore activities, making the booking window advantage more important. I'd seriously consider buying up to Disney's concierge level on a three- or four-night sailing where I care about accessing specific restaurants and activities.

If you do get the chance to book a Disney Cruise with all the concierge perks, you're in for a treat. Start packing your cruise bag and planning those excursions and don't look back.

Disney Cruise Line Staterooms

Types of staterooms.

When booking a Disney Cruise Line vacation, you will have several options for staterooms to choose from. The different types of staterooms cater to various preferences and budgets, ensuring that every guest can find the perfect accommodation for their needs. From cozy and affordable interiors to spacious suites with luxurious amenities, Disney Cruise Line offers a range of staterooms to suit every taste.

Standard Stateroom Features

No matter which type of stateroom you choose, you can expect certain standard features and amenities on a Disney Cruise Line ship . These include comfortable beds, a private bathroom, ample storage space, a television, a safe, and a mini refrigerator. Additionally, every stateroom is serviced twice a day by your friendly stateroom host or hostess, ensuring that you always return to a clean and tidy space.

Upgrade Options

If you are looking to enhance your Disney Cruise Line experience, there are a variety of upgrade options available. Upgrades allow you to enjoy additional space, enhanced amenities, and exclusive privileges throughout your voyage. Some of the upgrade options include larger stateroom categories, such as oceanview or verandah staterooms, as well as concierge-level accommodations. These upgrades can provide a more luxurious and personalized experience during your cruise.

Disney Cruise Line Upgrade Policies

Upgrade eligibility.

Disney Cruise Line has specific policies in place regarding upgrades to staterooms. The availability of upgrades can vary depending on factors such as the ship, sailing date, and stateroom category. While upgrades are not guaranteed, there are strategies you can employ to increase your chances of securing an upgrade (more on that later!). It’s important to note that upgrades are usually allocated based on availability and are not solely determined by loyalty status or any other individual factor.

Upgrade Process

The upgrade process on Disney Cruise Line typically involves being placed on an upgrade list. This list is maintained by the cruise line and managed internally. It is important to understand that being on the upgrade list does not guarantee an upgrade, but it does increase your chances of being considered for one if availability permits. Upgrades are typically assigned closer to the sailing date, as the cruise line assesses availability and adjusts stateroom assignments accordingly.

Additional Costs

While upgrades may offer enhanced features and amenities, it’s essential to consider the potential additional costs involved. Upgrading to a larger stateroom or a concierge-level accommodation may result in higher fares, and it’s important to budget accordingly. Additionally, certain privileges and services exclusive to upgraded accommodations, such as access to designated lounges or concierge services, may come at an additional cost. It’s important to weigh the benefits against the associated expenses before deciding on an upgrade.

Factors That May Influence Upgrades

Availability.

The availability of upgrades is a primary factor that can influence the likelihood of securing an upgraded stateroom. If there are limited staterooms available in higher categories, the chances of receiving an upgrade may be reduced. Conversely, if there is ample availability in higher stateroom categories, the likelihood of an upgrade may be higher. It’s important to keep in mind that availability can vary depending on the ship, sailing date, and demand.

Length of Cruise

The length of your Disney Cruise can also impact the possibility of receiving an upgrade. Longer cruises often have more available staterooms, increasing the chances of upgrades being offered for guests. If you have the flexibility to book a longer cruise, it may increase your chances of being considered for an upgrade.

Occupancy Levels

Occupancy levels on a specific sailing can also play a role in the availability of upgrades. If a sailing is not fully booked or has lower than expected occupancy, there may be a higher likelihood of upgrades being assigned. Conversely, if a sailing is near full capacity, the availability of upgrades may be limited.

Special Occasions

Occasionally, special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, or honeymoons may increase the likelihood of being considered for an upgrade. Disney Cruise Line values creating magical and memorable experiences for guests, and celebrating a special occasion may add an extra touch of pixie dust to your upgrade request.

Booking Strategies for Potential Upgrades

Booking early.

One of the most common strategies to increase the chances of receiving an upgrade is to book early. By securing your reservation well in advance, you have a better chance of accessing a wider range of stateroom categories. As availability decreases closer to the sailing date, the likelihood of upgrades being available diminishes as well.

Choosing Less Popular Sailings

Opting for sailings during less popular times of the year can also boost your chances of receiving an upgrade. These less crowded sailings typically have greater availability, allowing for more flexibility in stateroom assignments. While peak travel periods may have higher demand for upgrades, choosing off-peak times may increase your odds of securing an upgraded stateroom.

Being Flexible

Flexibility is key when it comes to potential upgrades. Being open to different sailing dates, itineraries, or even stateroom categories can increase your chances of securing an upgrade. For example, if you initially booked an interior stateroom but are open to being assigned an oceanview or verandah stateroom, you may have a better chance of receiving an upgrade if these higher categories become available.

Being a Frequent Cruiser

Disney Cruise Line values its loyal guests, and being a frequent cruiser can enhance your chances of receiving an upgrade. While loyalty status is not the sole criterion for upgrades, it can be a contributing factor. Disney Cruise Line has a repeat cruiser program called Castaway Club , which offers additional benefits and perks to returning guests. These benefits may include earlier access to the upgrade list or increased consideration for upgrades.

Understanding Disney Cruise Line’s Upgrade List

What is the upgrade list.

The upgrade list is a mechanism used by Disney Cruise Line to manage upgrades to staterooms. It is an internal system maintained by the cruise line and is designed to consider guests for potential upgrades based on availability and other factors. Placement on the upgrade list does not guarantee an upgrade, but it does signify that you are interested in being considered if opportunities arise.

How to Get on the Upgrade List

To be considered for an upgrade, it is important to inform Disney Cruise Line that you are open to receiving upgrades. This can be done by contacting the cruise line directly at the time of booking or by indicating your preferences through their online booking platform. By expressing your interest in potential upgrades, you increase your chances of being placed on the upgrade list.

How Upgrades are Assigned

The process of assigning upgrades is based on availability, occupancy levels, and various other factors. Disney Cruise Line prioritizes creating a fair and balanced assignment process to ensure that all guests have an equal opportunity to receive an upgrade. The cruise line typically assesses availability closer to the sailing date and makes upgrade assignments accordingly. It’s important to note that the assignment of upgrades is subject to change and can be influenced by multiple factors.

Additional Tips for Potential Upgrades

Establishing a good relationship with the cruise line.

Building a good relationship with the cruise line can be beneficial when it comes to potential upgrades. Being polite, friendly, and maintaining open communication with Disney Cruise Line staff can leave a positive impression. While it cannot guarantee an upgrade, it may increase the chances of special consideration for upgrades or other perks.

Monitoring for Special Promotions

Disney Cruise Line occasionally offers special promotions or discounts that may include upgrades. Staying informed and keeping an eye out for these promotions can provide opportunities to secure an upgraded stateroom at a reduced cost. It’s recommended to regularly check the Disney Cruise Line website, subscribe to their newsletters, or follow their social media channels to stay informed about any available promotions.

Utilizing Travel Agents

Working with a knowledgeable travel agent who specializes in Disney Cruise Line vacations can be advantageous when seeking potential upgrades. Travel agents often have access to exclusive deals, promotions, and firsthand knowledge of the cruise line’s upgrade policies. They can guide you through the booking process and help maximize your chances of getting the upgrade you desire.

Sailing During Off-Peak Seasons

Choosing to sail during off-peak seasons can improve your chances of securing an upgrade. Off-peak times typically have lower demand, which increases the probability of upgrades being available. Additionally, sailing during these times often means fewer crowds and a more relaxed atmosphere, allowing for a more enjoyable and personalized cruise experience .

Potential Upgrades for Concierge Level Guests

Benefits of concierge level.

Guests booked in concierge-level accommodations on Disney Cruise Line benefit from a range of exclusive privileges and amenities. These can include personalized service by dedicated concierge hosts, access to concierge lounges and sun decks, priority embarkation and disembarkation, pre-arrival planning services, and more. The elevated experience of concierge-level accommodations already includes numerous luxurious amenities, making upgrades within this level less common.

Opportunities for Upgrades

While upgrades within the concierge level are less common, there may still be opportunities to secure an upgrade within this category. Availability and timing can play a significant role in these upgrades. If a higher-level concierge stateroom becomes available due to cancellations or last-minute changes, guests booked in lower-level concierge accommodations may be considered for an upgrade. These opportunities are typically evaluated and assigned based on the cruise line’s upgrade policies and availability.

Concierge Upgrade Strategies

To increase the chances of securing an upgrade within the concierge level, it is recommended to book as early as possible. As concierge accommodations are limited, early booking gives you access to a wider range of staterooms within this category. Additionally, remaining flexible with your sailing dates and having multiple options can help increase your chances of being considered for an upgrade within the concierge level.

First-Time Cruisers and Upgrades

Upgrades for first-time cruisers.

First-time cruisers can certainly be considered for upgrades on Disney Cruise Line. While loyalty status is not a factor for upgrades, first-time cruisers can still enjoy the potential benefits of receiving an upgrade based on availability and other factors. Disney Cruise Line strives to create magical experiences for all guests, regardless of their cruising history.

Tips for First-Timers Seeking Upgrades

If you are a first-time cruiser seeking an upgrade, the same strategies and tips apply. Booking early, choosing less popular sailings, remaining flexible, and expressing interest in upgrades are all key strategies to increase your chances. Remember, the upgrade process is ultimately based on availability and other factors, so managing your expectations and being prepared for different outcomes is essential.

Necessary Preparations for Potential Upgrades

Researching stateroom categories.

Before booking your Disney Cruise Line vacation, it is crucial to research the various stateroom categories available. Familiarize yourself with the layout, features, and amenities each category offers. Understanding the differences between interior, oceanview, verandah, and concierge staterooms will help you choose the category that best suits your preferences and budget.

Budgeting for Potential Upgrades

When considering potential upgrades, it’s important to budget accordingly. Upgrades may come with additional costs, such as higher fares or fees associated with upgraded amenities. Before committing to an upgrade, carefully assess your budget and determine what additional expenses you can comfortably accommodate.

Preparing for Disappointment

While upgrades can be a thrilling possibility, it’s essential to prepare for the possibility of not receiving one. Availability is not guaranteed, and there are numerous factors to consider during the upgrade assignment process. It’s important to approach the upgrade process with a sense of optimism while also keeping in mind that upgrades are not guaranteed for every guest.

Final Thoughts

Securing an upgrade to a stateroom on a Disney Cruise Line vacation can be an exciting possibility. Whether you are seeking additional space, enhanced amenities, or a more luxurious experience, Disney Cruise Line offers options to suit every preference. By understanding the upgrade policies, being aware of potential influencing factors, utilizing booking strategies, and maintaining realistic expectations, you can increase your chances of receiving a coveted upgrade.

Making the Most of Your Disney Cruise Experience

Regardless of whether you receive an upgrade, your Disney Cruise experience is sure to be magical. Best Staterooms on a Disney Cruise

Disney Cruise Lines are perfect for families looking to enjoy quality time together. But with so many different categories and subcategories, how do you know which stateroom is right for you? Let’s investigate how to select the best staterooms on a Disney cruise for your family vacation.

Not familiar with the term “stateroom”?  Disney Cruise Line refers to the individual passenger rooms on its cruise ships as “staterooms.”  You might have heard these previously referred to elsewhere as “ cabins .”

The Disney Cruise Line offers four main types of staterooms: Concierge (the most expensive ), Veranda, Oceanview, and Inside (the least expensive). In each category and within each ship, there are different options (subcategories). Category 1 is typically the most costly, followed by Category 2, etc. Category 11 is the least expensive. Within each category, subcategory A is typically more expensive than subcategory B, and so on.

The amenities and size of the room usually correspond to the price, with Category 1 being the biggest and best while Category 11 has the smallest rooms with the fewest features.

Within each numbered category, the letter subcategories typically designate more preferable locations on the ship’s deck plan (rather than differences in stateroom amenities).  For example, a 4A stateroom might be in a better location than a 4C stateroom, but the interiors of both staterooms will be virtually identical. Note that some Concierge staterooms are an exception to this rule; Category 1A is a drastically different stateroom versus Category 1B.

Generally speaking, rooms located on higher decks or the middle of each deck plan (known as midship or mid ) are considered more preferable than lower decks or staterooms that are forward (front of the ship) or aft (rear of the ship). Which side of the ship the room is on (port side or starboard side) generally does not factor into stateroom category.

Also note that some stateroom categories cater to different travel parties. Some staterooms might only sleep up to a family of four , whereas others can hold five or more.

Please note that this guide does not include accessible suites , which offer the same level of convenience and comfort to guests with disabilities. For questions about accessible suites or any of the below-listed rooms, please get in touch with The Vacationeer .

Their team of experienced Disney travel agents will help you find the best itineraries at the lowest price, and there’s never an additional charge for their services.

Now, let’s look at the best staterooms on a Disney Cruise ship .

Concierge Staterooms (Most Expensive Main Category)

DCL Concierge Wish Tower Suite

The Concierge category offers the most luxurious – and expensive – accommodations on Disney Cruise Line. Each room has a large private verandah and premium amenities and services.

The Concierge Wish Tower Suite and the Concierge Royal Suite are the ship’s most spacious and lavishly appointed rooms. Additionally, the Concierge 1-Bedroom Suite is a more modestly priced option that still offers an incredible experience. For families, the Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom provides plenty of space and convenient access to all of the ship’s family-friendly amenities.

Concierge-level staterooms in categories 1, 2, and 3 include additional perks , such as access to priority seating for excursions and events and exclusive access to the Concierge Lounge, where you can relax with complimentary coffee, tea, and pastries or enjoy evening hors d’oeuvres and cocktails.

Here’s a breakdown of the categories found in the Concierge category.

Category 1A – Concierge Wish Tower Suite (Disney Wish cruise ship only)

The Wish Tower Suite on Deck 14 and 15 is the Disney Cruise Line’s most luxurious room. It has two bedrooms, a space for children with two bunk beds, and a library that can convert into two more rooms. Aside from the four full bathrooms and the half-bath off the living room, the suite has floor-to-ceiling windows on both decks, providing a great view of the ship from the suite.

Eight guests can stay in this 1,966 sq. ft. suite. It has a wow factor like no other!

Recommendation :  The Concierge Wish Tower Suite is the perfect choice for families or groups who have the money to spend and won’t settle for anything less than the best. Nothing out-competes the luxury of this stateroom.  It truly is the best stateroom on a Disney Cruise.

Category 1A – Concierge Royal Suite w/ Verandah (Disney Dream, Fantasy, Magic, & Wonder cruise ships)

The Concierge Royal Suite with Verandah stateroom is the largest and most luxurious suite offered on Disney’s Dream, Fantasy, Magic, and Wonder. The Magic and Wonder ships can accommodate up to 7 guests, and the Dream and Fantasy ships can accommodate up to 5 guests.

The suite features a living area with a formal dining table and sitting area and a massive verandah with a private hot tub on the Dream and Fantasy ships. The decor in these suites is luxurious and tasteful, making it the perfect choice for those looking for the ultimate in luxury and comfort.

Recommendation :  This is the Crème de la Crème of staterooms on the Disney Dream, Fantasy, Magic, and Wonder cruise ships. If roominess and luxury are what you’re after, and you have the money to spend, then Concierge Royal Suite with Verandah is a great choice.

Category 1B – Concierge 2-Story Royal Suite w/ Verandah (Disney Wish)

The Concierge 2-Story Royal Suite with Verandah on the Disney Wish cruise ship is a luxurious and spacious stateroom that spans two decks (decks 12 and 13). Category 1B – Concierge 2-Bedroom Suite w/ Verandah (Disney Magic & Wonder)

Disney Cruise Line’s Concierge 2-Bedroom Suite with Verandah features two separate bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, and a spacious sitting area.  The total area is 945 sq. ft., including the verandah, and can accommodate up to seven people. A large verandah is perfect for enjoying the views or relaxing. It is an impressive suite, perfect for a large group or family!

This stateroom is only available on Disney Magic and Disney Wonder .

Recommendation:   An excellent choice for families who want plenty of luxury and space. Choose the starboard (right) side if you sail to Castaway Cay because you will have better views of Disney’s private island when docked.

Category 1C – 1-Story Royal Suites w/ Verandah (Disney Wish)

With a classic elegance inspired by Sleeping Beauty, the Disney Wish’s 1-Story Royal Suites with Verandah are perfect for families and groups of up to 6. There are two bedrooms, a living room and dining room, three full bathrooms, and an impressive 1,507 square feet of living space. The wet bar is perfect for entertaining, and the large private verandah with a whirlpool tub is the ideal place to relax.

Recommendation :  These beautiful and family-friendly staterooms will make your cruise vacation unforgettable.

Category 2A and 2B – Concierge 1-Bedroom Suite w/ Verandah (All Disney Cruise Ships)

Disney cruises offer a 1-Bedroom Suite with Verandah for those looking for a little extra space and privacy on their vacation. A large walk-in closet provides plenty of space for storing your belongings.

The main difference between Categories 2A and 2B is location. Magic and Wonder’s 2A suites have a slightly different layout with a longer verandah. Dream and Fantasy’s 2A suites are located between the two connecting Royal Suites and the ship’s front center. The 2A suites of the Disney Wish are located on deck 12 and have a deeper verandah than the 2B suites.

Recommendation:  This is an excellent option if you only need one bedroom but still want plenty of roominess and class.

The stateroom features a queen-sized bed, a convertible sofa, a Pullman bunk bed, and a spacious bathroom with a shower, TV, and a safe. There are just over 300 square feet of living space. Additionally, families have concierge-level guests access to a private lounge and priority boarding.

Recommendation:   Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom is excellent for families that want the luxury and perks of a Concierge-level stateroom but don’t need all the bells and whistles (and expense) of the Category 1 and 2 staterooms.

Category 3B – Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom (Disney Wish)

The Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom on Disney Wish offers stunning sea views through floor-to-ceiling windows.

A king bed, a single convertible sofa, and an upper-berth single pull-down bed make up this room, which can accommodate up to five guests. There is also a wall pull-down bed in rooms that sleep five. The 357-square-foot room provides plenty of space for the whole family to relax.

Recommendation :  These are fun and family-oriented staterooms on Disney’s newest cruise ship. This is a good option if you want a Concierge-level room at a relatively affordable price.

Verandah (Balcony) Staterooms

DCL Disney Magic Verandah Stateroom

Verandah staterooms are Disney’s most spacious non-concierge accommodations, each with its own balcony outside the ship where you can enjoy the fresh air while watching the ocean go by.

Category four, five, six, and seven are verandah staterooms. Some rooms in this category offer partial views, but all provide a comfortable and relaxing space.

Category 4 – Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom w/ Verandah (All Disney Cruise Ships)

The Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah on Disney cruises is the largest stateroom on the ships that are not concierge suites. Roughly 300 sq ft, it sleeps up to 5 and is the only single-room option for a family of 5 on the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder. The Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah is also the most frequently booked option for families of 5 on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy .

All of these factors considered it’s no wonder that this room type is one of the most popular among families cruising with Disney.

Recommendation : The Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom is perfect for families of four or five who value roominess and want to enjoy the ocean breeze from the verandah .

Category 5 – Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah (All Disney Cruise Ships)

The Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah on Disney cruises is a fantastic choice for your family cruise. With enough space to comfortably sleep 3-4 guests and an unobstructed verandah, this room type is perfect for enjoying the beautiful view.

Magic and Wonder’s cabins are 268 sq ft, while Dream, Fantasy, and Wish are 248 sq ft. The Deluxe Oceanview Staterooms with Verandah come with a queen bed, a sleeper sofa, and a pull-out berth (if sleeping four). This room type also features a sitting area, plenty of closet space, and a private verandah to enjoy the view without leaving your stateroom.

Recommendation :   Among the regular-sized verandah cabins, these are the most common and the most frequently booked for families with four or fewer members. They are an excellent choice!

DCL-Disney-Dream-Cat-5-Stateroom

A Category 5 stateroom on the Disney Dream | Image © Disney

Category 6 – Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah – Undersized, Obstructed View, or White Wall  (All Disney Cruise Ships)

Category 6 staterooms are located near the back of the ship’s upper deck. Accommodations are nearly identical to those found in Category 5 but have either an undersized, obstructed, or white wall verandah. Those who book a Category 6 cabin on the Magic and Wonder will have full white wall railings, while on the Dream and Fantasy, the white wall only extends halfway up the railing.

All of these staterooms sleep at least three, and many sleep 4.

Recommendation :  Because these rooms are nearly identical to Category 5 rooms, they are a terrific way to save money on your Disney cruise . We recommend the Dream and Fantasy 6B staterooms because of their stunning views, and Disney Magic and Wonder’s Category 6 staterooms on Deck 6 have more verandah space, as do 5650 and 5150.

Category 7 – Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Navigator’s Verandah (All Disney Cruise Ships)

Navigator verandahs on Disney Magic and Disney Wonder feature mostly enclosed balconies with a viewing window cut out. In contrast, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish have a minimally obstructed view from the verandah.

Recommendation:  The rooms in Category 7 are nearly identical to those in Category 5 and 6, so they are a good way to save on a Disney cruise if you don’t mind having a partial view. We believe these are the best values in the verandah category, particularly on the Dream, Fantasy, and Wish.

The Oceanview category of staterooms (Category 8 and 9) features rooms with scenic vistas through genuine porthole windows. The Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom is perfect for families, while the Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom provides a more intimate setting.

Category 8 – Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom (Disney Dream, Fantasy, & Wish)

Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy, and Disney Wish to offer a truly luxurious cruise experience with their Category 8 Deluxe Family Oceanview Staterooms.

These staterooms are much larger than the standard size (around 240 sq ft), sleeping between 3 and 5 people comfortably. In addition, they feature unique round tub-showers (see the video above for Category 4) and large portholes with seating, making them the perfect place to relax and take in the breathtaking views. The exceptions to this are the 8As, which are similar to suites with two large portholes and plenty of space. Families and groups can enjoy Category 8A even more since many have a divider between the bed and seating area. None of them will disappoint.

Recommendation :  Families looking for affordability and comfort will find the Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom is the right choice.

Category 9 – Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom (All Disney Cruise Ships)

The Category 9 Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom sleeps 3 or 4 people and is the same size as the category 10’s with a similar layout and features. The Disney Dream and Fantasy Rooms are 204 sq ft, 214 on Disney Magic and Wonder, and 218 sq ft on Disney Wish. Most rooms have a porthole on one of the walls. On the Magic and Wonder ships, the 9D staterooms on deck 1 have two small portholes instead of one large porthole.

A, B, C, and D designations represent Disney’s assessment of the location and view of the room. In Dream, Fantasy, and Wish, the 9C and 9D staterooms typically have obstructed views and are usually located in the front of the vessel.

Recommendation :  If you prefer to save money over having a porthole in your room, opt for Category 10.

Inside Staterooms (Least Expensive Main Category)

DCL Disney Wish Inside Stateroom

An Inside Stateroom on the Disney Wish | Image © Disney

The Inside category features Disney Cruise Line’s base accommodations, with no window (no exterior view) but still featuring a nautical motif. The Deluxe Inside Stateroom is slightly larger than the Standard Inside Stateroom and provides additional storage space and a sitting area.

Category 10 –Deluxe Inside Stateroom (Disney Dream, Fantasy, Magic, & Wonder)

Rooms in Category 10 are almost identical to those in Category 9, except for being unable to see the outside. These staterooms also have more square footage than those in Category 11.

The Disney Dream/Fantasy Deluxe Inside Staterooms are 204 sq ft, and the Disney Magic/Wonder rooms are 214 sq ft. They can accommodate 3 or 4 people.

Disney Wish does not have a Deluxe Inside category.

Virtual portholes on the Disney Dream and Fantasy ships allow passengers to see what is happening outside (along with a bit of Disney magic thrown in).

There are also a select few unnamed staterooms on the Magic/Wonder ships known in some circles as “secret porthole” staterooms — they actually have porthole windows but Disney decided not to classify them as oceanview rooms because lifeboats or other architectural elements obstruct the views.

Deluxe Inside Staterooms have a split bathroom, with one half having a sink and a shower, and the other half having a toilet and a sink. A, B, and C subcategories are assigned according to their locations, with A subcategories on upper decks or closer to midship, while C subcategories are on lower decks.

Recommendation : Deluxe Inside Cabins/Staterooms are an excellent option for couples or families of 3 or 4 on a budget.

Category 11 – Standard Inside Stateroom (All Disney Cruise Ships)

Standard Inside Staterooms are typically the cheapest rooms available on Disney Cruise Line .

Standard Inside Staterooms sleep three, and some sleep four.  They’re smaller than other staterooms, but the amenities are the same. The Disney Magic and Wonder rooms are 184 square feet, while the Dream Fantasy and Wish rooms are 169 square feet.

There’s no split bathroom in a Standard Inside Stateroom. The Disney Dream and Fantasy ships feature a Magical Porthole with real-time views, but the other ships do not have exterior views.

Disney divides the rooms into categories A, B, and C based on attractiveness. Category 11A rooms are found on upper decks and near the ship’s middle, while 11B rooms are on lower decks.

Recommendation:  The Standard Inside Statement is a small and cheap option, so you shouldn’t expect too much from it. However, this DCL room offers more space than you would get on other (non-Disney) cruise ships of the same class. It allows couples and small families the opportunity to enjoy a Disney cruise at a reasonable price.

As always seems to be the case, the best option for you may not be the best option for another family.

Ask yourself the question: “what’s most important to me?”  Is it having a balcony? Is it experiencing concierge level service in a suite? Is it having additional beds for kids? Is it saving money and just making sure you’re onboard the ship?

Answering those questions, then reviewing deck plans, photos, reviews, and our guide/tips above will help you decide what’s best for you.

No matter your room type, you’re sure to have a magical experience aboard a Disney Cruise ship.

Thanks for reading our Best Staterooms on a Disney Cruise article.  Happy cruising (and don’t forget your passport)!

Disney Cruise Stateroom Guarantee – What Is It and Will It Save Me Money?

Sharing is caring!

Have you ever wondered what a Disney Cruise Stateroom Guarantee is?

You might have heard of something called a Stateroom Guarantee, or read about a GTY, IGT, OGT, or even a VGT.

What do these words and abbreviations actually mean? And can knowing about them actually save you money on your Disney Cruise?

Here is a guide to help you understand firstly what a Guaranteed Stateroom or Cabin actually is so that you can make a decision of whether it is the right option for you.

Disney Cruise Staterooms

Usually, when you book a cruise stateroom you pick a specific one. Usually, but not if you book a Disney Cruise Stateroom Guarantee.

disneywondertour

A cruise ship is not like a hotel where you book a type of room and it is assigned when you check-in. Usually, you will book a specific stateroom so you will know exactly where you will be on the ship.

However, sometimes Disney will offer Guaranteed Staterooms for select sailings.

This doesn’t happen on all Disney sailings. Guaranteed staterooms are usually offered closer to the sail dates. Disney will have assessed that they aren’t selling staterooms at the rate they wanted to, so will start to offer discounted Guaranteed Staterooms.

Many Disney cruises sell out so they will not offer Guaranteed rates.

Disneywondertowelanimal

The first decision that you need to make is which type of stateroom you want with these choices:

  • An Inside Stateroom
  • An Outside Stateroom
  • A Stateroom with a Verandah or Balcony

There are also Concierge staterooms on all Disney ships but we won’t talk about those here as you will never be offered a Guaranteed Stateroom for Concierge.

If you want to see more about the specific advantages and features of each type of stateroom on a Disney Cruise then we have put this together for you in our Disney Cruise Stateroom Guide .

Here are some abbreviations you may see:

  • GTY – Guaranteed Stateroom
  • IGT – Guaranteed Inside Stateroom
  • OGT – Guaranteed Outside Stateroom
  • VGT Guaranteed Verandah Stateroom

Why Would You Book A Stateroom Guarantee on a Disney Cruise?

Sometimes you don’t have a choice as that is all that is available in the category that you want.

However, the best reason to book a cruise stateroom guarantee is to save money .

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Let’s look at an actual example with prices.

If you take a 5-night San Diego cruise leaving on 8th April 2022 we can look at how much you could save with a Guarantee Stateroom.

If you look at the prices below you will see that the “headline rates” for that sailing start at

  • Inside Stateroom $2,413
  • Outside Stateroom $2,843
  • Verandah Stateroom $3,533

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

If you look a little deeper and see how much the individual Categories of stateroom are, then you can see that both Guaranteed and pick your own stateroom choices are available.

The rates for an Inside stateroom start anywhere between $2,413 and $3,353. A difference of $940 for a 5-night cruise.

The difference between a Standard Inside Stateroom and a Deluxe Inside stateroom is that the Standard stateroom does not have a split bath.

So you can see here that if you are prepared to let Disney allocate a Standard Inside Stateroom you will pay $2413 instead of $3,193.

The difference between the Deluxe Inside Stateroom and the Deluxe Guaranteed is a bit unusual. Here the Guaranteed Stateroom costs more money.

The reason this is because there will always be different prices within categories. Some locations are seen as better than others. The higher up in the ship you are, usually the higher the price.

What is probably happening here is that the Deluxe Guaranteed Staterooms are in a better position on the ship. The ones where you can pick your stateroom are most probably on Deck 1.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Here you can see below the terms and conditions that you have to accept if you book a Guaranteed Stateroom with Disney Cruise Lines.

You need to be aware of the restrictions that you will accept in return for a lower rate.

The wording below is for the Guaranteed Inside Stateroom “with Restrictions”. The Deluxe Inside Stateroom – Guaranteed – is more expensive and does not have these restrictions.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Below you can see the starting rates for Oceanview Staterooms for that sailing.

You can save almost $900 if you book a Guaranteed Oceanview Room with Restrictions instead of a Deluxe Oceanview where you pick your stateroom location.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

As you can see below you can save $700 if you book a Guaranteed Verandah Stateroom.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

You need to note that the Category that is Guaranteed is the 7A which is the Navigators verandah. These are unique to Disney Wonder and Wish.

They have an enclosed Verandah with benches on either side. You do have access to fresh air, but the experience is very different from most of the other balconies on the ship.

So if you book a category 7A you do have to be prepared that you will be given one of these staterooms.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

When Will I Know Where My Stateroom Is Located?

The whole point of booking a Guaranteed Stateroom is that you will now know where your stateroom is located when you book.

You will have to wait to find out.

But how long will you have to wait to see which exact stateroom number you have been allocated?

There is no exact answer to this, but usually, it is around 7 to 14 days before sailing.

It can be as late as the actual day of sailing so you only find out when you check-in at the port. This is rare though.

Most times you will know at least a day before and often a week or two in advance of your sailing.

Will I Get an Upgrade?

Well, it’s highly unlikely that you will.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Therefore you should never think that you will get an upgrade if you book a guaranteed stateroom.

it sometimes happens. You may book a Guaranteed Standard Inside Stateroom and get an upgrade to a Deluxe. Or even if you are very lucky an upgrade to an Outside Stateroom (although this is rare).

However, you aren’t going to book a guaranteed inside stateroom and find yourself magically upgraded to the Walt Disney Suite. Or even a Verandah!

I Need More Than One Stateroom – Should I Book a Guaranteed Stateroom?

Not unless you realize that the staterooms in your group could be very far apart from each other.

Disney Wish Staterooms

If you book more than one Guaranteed Stateroom even though they are on the same booking, you could be located in very different areas of the ship. You could have one stateroom on Deck 2 and another on Dec 7.

Having said this, Disney really does try to place you as close together as possible.

I have done this a couple of times and once we were on the same deck but 12 staterooms down the hall. Another time one was on Deck 5 and the other almost below them on Deck 4. This was fine for us as it was with my adult children, but this might not work so well for other family groups.

How to Pack Like a Cruise Travel Expert

What If I Do Not Like the Location of the Guarantee Stateroom I Have Been Allocated?

What if after taking a chance, you don’t like the stateroom you have been allocated. You really wanted Deck 7 but you got Deck 1. You got port side but you wanted starboard.

Disney wish Staterooms

There is nothing you can do, except upgrade to a non Guarantee Stateroom, if one is even available.

The whole point of the Guaranteed Stateroom concept is that you give up the option to choose your stateroom and have one allocated to you. If you have taken the chance and don’t get the stateroom that you want, then you will have to accept it.

The only exception to this is if you can upgrade. But you will have to pay extra for this and there will be a limited selection. This would usually mean a costly upgrade payment so you can choose your exact stateroom.

Disney Dream Stateroom

Also, be aware that by the time you know what your stateroom allocation is there may be very limited options available to be booked. You will have a limited choice of staterooms as it is very possible that most are sold out at that stage. It may even be that everything is booked and you don’t change.

Always be sure when you book a Guaranteed Stateroom that you will be happy with any stateroom that you are allocated. It will save you money but it is a trade-off as you do take a risk.

Who Should Book a Disney Cruise Guaranteed Stateroom?

  • Guests who want to save money and are prepared to trade this for not booking a specific stateroom.
  • Those who will be happy with any stateroom within the category they booked.
  • Possibly have cruised before so they know their own individual needs and expectations for a stateroom.

Who Should NOT Book a Disney Cruise Guaranteed Stateroom?

  • If you are expecting an upgrade.
  • If a certain stateroom location is important to you.
  • You want your party to have rooms next to or even close to you.

What it's really like in a $642-a-night inside stateroom on the smallest Disney Cruise

  • My family of avid cruise-goers booked the cheapest inside stateroom on the Disney Magic .
  • We were upgraded from a standard to a deluxe room at no cost, but we still didn't have any windows.
  • We've always booked balcony or veranda rooms but will book inside rooms going forward to save.

Insider Today

On our last three-day cruise aboard the Disney Magic , my family of four booked a standard inside stateroom for $2,570 (or $642 a night).

We got a complimentary upgrade to a deluxe inside stateroom, and the base cost included food and activities, including a day at Disney's private island, Castaway Cay.

Here's a look inside our room.

We booked one of the cheaper staterooms on the Disney Magic

Inside staterooms have no windows and usually share three walls with other rooms.

I've been on a total of nine cruises, and this most recent jaunt on the Disney Magic was only the second time I've booked an inside stateroom. This was also our fifth cruise with our kids, and it was the first time they'd stayed in a stateroom without a balcony.

My dad, who's also an avid cruise-goer, told me he has never splurged on a balcony stateroom, so I decided to see if he was onto something. Spoiler: He is.

We decided to go as cheap as we could with this trip and booked the least expensive stateroom that would sleep four.

Related stories

A few days before the cruise, we were automatically upgraded from a standard inside stateroom to a deluxe inside stateroom. We didn't request it, but we appreciated the extra 30 square feet of space.

For a three-night cruise, the price difference between the bookings is about $47 in total.

The most notable upgrade was the bathroom. A standard inside stateroom has a single bathroom with a sink, toilet, and shower. A deluxe inside stateroom has a split bathroom with a separate area for one sink and the toilet.

The second area is handy if someone needs to use the toilet while someone else is showering or getting ready.

Our quarters were tight, but there was enough room for 4 people

Cruise-ship staterooms are smaller than a typical hotel room, so even if you book a more expensive option, you don't get tons of space.

The stateroom attendant converted our couch to bunk beds for our kids each night as part of the nightly turndown services.

Our room had a curtain that separated the queen bed from the couch area. It didn't provide much privacy, but my kids wanted the bathroom light on, so the curtains helped block that from our bed.

Other amenities included a 22-inch TV and a mini-fridge.

The storage space was sufficient.

We had a closet, a set of drawers, a dresser with cubbies, and a desk with some drawer space. There were also drawers on either side of the bed and storage underneath the bench.

There's enough space under the queen bed to stow your suitcases.

We're pretty light packers and had three small bags and one slightly larger bag, but if you have more, you might find storage space more challenging.

There's not a ton of counter space in the bathroom, but it was adequate. I have the most toiletries out of anyone in our family, so I didn't have to compete for counter space. But I was glad I brought travel-sized products .

The bathroom was also stocked with hand soap, body lotion, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash.

The only parts of the stateroom that felt really tight were the side of the queen bed closest to the wall and the space between the bed and dresser.

And other than being a good spot for our breakfast tray, I thought the coffee table was a waste of space.

We've always booked balcony or veranda rooms but will likely continue booking inside rooms on future cruises

A travel agent once told us we absolutely had to book an ocean-view stateroom. It didn't take much to convince us to splurge on sea breezes and a private balcony, but we spent almost no time in the room during the cruise.

We crunched the numbers and realized we could save almost $1,000 on a three-night cruise by booking an inside stateroom.

I expected to feel cramped and miss natural light, but I liked the darkness and got some of the best sleep I've had in a while. Plus, my kids didn't comment once on the lack of veranda.

I'm not saying I'll never book another veranda room again, but I can easily see booking inside staterooms on future cruises. Our overall experience was just as good, and I enjoyed the savings.

13 Things to Know About Your Disney Cruise Line Stateroom Experience

There are many things that a Walt Disney World hotel room and a Disney Cruise Line stateroom have in common – they’re both places great places to stay and be part of the Disney action. But there are also a number of differences between hotel rooms and cruise ship cabins.

Before we get going, you should be aware that if you’re staying at Walt Disney World hotel, you won’t know the exact location of your room until the day you arrive on property. You can (and maybe should) make a room request , but you won’t have any real information about your room until you’re on site. Conversely, with Disney Cruise Line, most guests will choose their exact stateroom at the time of booking. (The exception to this is guests who opt to let Disney choose their stateroom by making a less expensive GTY booking .)

While having the ability to select your exact room means that you have leeway to customize your experience and know in advance exactly what your room will be like, some guests find that level of information and decision-making to be overwhelming, becoming paralyzed with “what if” questions. Rest assured, that whatever stateroom you select, you’ll have safe, clean accommodations on a wonderful vacation vessel.

1. The Size of Your Room.

In general, ocean cruise staterooms are smaller than land-based hotel rooms. The smallest WDW rooms (at the value resorts Pop Century, All Stars, and Art of Animation Little Mermaid area) are about 260 square feet. The smallest Disney Cruise staterooms are the category 11 cabins at 169 square feet – 35% smaller than the land-based rooms. Both the WDW value rooms and the DCL category 11 rooms are advertised as sleeping four people. While you might technically be able to get four people into a DCL stateroom, it’s going to feel significantly different than staying in a regular hotel room.

There are larger DCL staterooms, but even the much higher category 5 staterooms are about 240-270 square feet (depending on which ship you’re sailing), similar in size to those WDW value rooms. Our friend Scott Sanders over at Disney Cruise Line Blog has all the stateroom-by-stateroom details on his site.

If you’re planning your first cruise, you should be aware that staterooms are small on virtually all ocean liners. That’s just one of the constraints of traveling in a contained vessel. Most Disney staterooms are 15-25% larger than those of the competition.

2. The Number and Size of Beds.

Every non-suite Disney Cruise Line stateroom has one queen-sized bed. While some cruise lines have primary beds that can be split into two (for example a king-sized bed that can be pulled apart into two twin beds), Disney does not have this feature. There is only one configuration for the main bed.

In addition to the queen bed, most rooms have between 1-3 additional twin-size sleep surfaces. These additional beds might fold out from the couch, pop down from the ceiling, or fold down from the wall like a Murphy bed. These non-queen beds can only be “assembled” by your stateroom host with a special key. You can’t just pop down the ceiling bed by yourself.

These twin-sized beds are comfortable for children and most average-size women. If you’re a larger adult, you may find them too small for your liking. Also note that the pop-down ceiling beds have a posted weight limit of between 250-300 pounds depending on the ship. My research indicates that if you’re more than about 200 pounds or taller than about 5′ 8″, you may not be happy on the top bunk.

The number of beds will be noted in the stateroom’s online description at DisneyCruise.com, but not always in the most helpful fashion. For example, I recently sailed with two of my adult daughters on the Dream in a stateroom category that was advertised as sleeping 3 to 4 guests. My assumption was that this meant that our room would have the queen bed and two twin beds, and that we’d each have our own sleep surface. It turned out that our room had only the queen bed and the twin pull-out couch. The CATEGORY of the stateroom I selected could accommodate 3-4 people, but the specific ROOM I selected only held three. Our booking for three was perfectly acceptable from Disney’s perspective, but somewhat less than ideal from our perspective.

We made it work with my daughters sharing the queen bed, but my suggestion is that if your room is listed with a range of acceptable guests (3-4 guests, for example), your party is smaller than the maximum, and you want a high number of sleep surfaces, call DCL (or have your travel agent do this), to assess the real number of beds in the room.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

3. The Quality of the Bedding.

These beds are known for their comfort, with guests routinely asking how they can acquire them for their own homes. If you’re wondering, the tag on the mattresses on the Wish indicates that they’re the 13″ Cayman model produced by Biscayne Bedding International . The linens onboard are by the luxury brand Frette and equivalent sheets can be purchased on their website.

There will be a throw blanket positioned at the end of the queen-sized bed in your stateroom. This is another item routinely praised by guests for its softness and Goldilocks weight. Unfortunately, these are not sold onboard or online. You can sometimes find them on eBay, where you can expect to pay more than $200 for a genuine item.

Also note that if you’re traveling with young children, you can ask your stateroom host if they have any character sheets on hand. While this is not guaranteed, they may be able to make up your child’s twin bed with character-printed sheets.

4. Most Stateroom Categories Have Split Bathrooms.

In all but the smallest staterooms (category 11), Disney Cruise Line has split bathrooms . This means that one bathroom compartment includes a sink and the toilet, with a separate compartment holding the shower/tub and another sink. These bifurcated bathrooms are small, but they can be a great help if multiple people are trying to get ready at the same time.

5. There Will Be Basic Toiletries in Your Room.

Your bathroom will be equipped with body lotion, bars of hand soap, liquid body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. The body wash, shampoo, and conditioner will be in multi-use containers on a shelf or mounted to the wall inside the shower compartment.

The concierge staterooms are stocked with Elemis brand products. All other rooms currently have products labeled as “DCL” or “Disney Cruise Line.”

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

6. There Will Be a Hairdryer in Your Room.

Every Disney Cruise Line stateroom is equipped with a hair dryer, but don’t look for it in the bathroom. Hairdryers are stored in a black fabric bag in your stateroom desk.

You’re welcome to bring your own hairstyling equipment on board, but be aware that, due to electrical safety measures, there are limits on the allowable power ratings of hair equipment. The DCL list of prohibited items states, “Hairdryers must be 230V and 450 watts or less.” This means that some deluxe hair tools such as the Dyson Airwrap will not work and may be confiscated at boarding.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

7. Your Stateroom Will Have a Refrigerator. Sort of.

Every DCL stateroom includes a “beverage chiller.” On the Magic, Wonder, Dream, and Fantasy these look like small dorm refrigerators, on the Wish and Treasure these are drawer-style coolers. There is no in-room freezer available.

I’ve found the chillers to be great for keeping a carton of milk or an extra slice of key lime pie cold overnight. If, however, you will need something more robust than the room fridge (for something like medication or breast milk), contact DCL via the Special Services form .

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

8. There is Storage Space for Clothing and Luggage.

The space under the queen bed in your stateroom is open, making it the perfect place to store your suitcases when not in use. Additionally, you’ll find closet space with hangers and shelves for stowing loose items. On the Magic, Wonder, Dream, and Fantasy, you will also find drawers for folded clothing. The Wish (and presumably the Treasure) have open shelves inside the closet. On these ships, it can be helpful to bring packing cubes to help corral your items and segregate them from those of your traveling companions.

Your closet will also include a laundry bag and a price list for laundry or dry cleaning. It’s not listed, but pressing is half the price of cleaning. Disney does not allow irons or steamers in the staterooms so this is a great time saver if you don’t want to go to the public laundry rooms to iron. Just put your clothes inside the bag, mark what you want done, and hang them outside your room. You’ll also find your life jackets stored in your closet. It’s a good idea to check to make sure you have the correct number inside.

9. Every Stateroom Includes a Safe.

Your stateroom safe is located inside one of the closets. This is a great place to keep your passport, extra cash or credit cards, and any other valuables.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

10. Every Stateroom Has a Desk/Vanity.

The desk/vanity in your stateroom has enough space to open up a laptop, though backless seating might not be great for long-term work sessions. The mirror above the desk is well-lit and serves as an adequate makeup mirror.

The central (long, flat) desk drawer will include basic stationery items such as a pen, writing paper, and a few postcards, as well as hang-tag style breakfast room service menus .

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

11. Your Stateroom Will Have Power Outlets, but Maybe Not Enough.

Each generation of Disney ships has increased the number of accessible outlets per stateroom. Two to three adults will almost certainly be fine in a Wish or Treasure stateroom. They’ll probably be OK in a Dream or Fantasy stateroom. And they might have trouble finding enough outlets on the Magic or Wonder.

Be careful if you want to increase the number of outlets in your room. Standard power strips are not allowed and will likely be confiscated at your embarkation port. USB splitters generally are OK.

12. Your Stateroom Will Have a Television.

Every DCL stateroom includes a television set. These are not large, but they do the job. The standard channel line-up is modest, with just news channels and some Disney, ABC, and ESPN programming.

While Disney+ is not available on board, the stateroom TVs do have a large library of movies on demand. If there is a Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, or Marvel movie that you’ve been meaning to see, you’ll likely be able to find it showing on your room TV.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

13. Most Staterooms Include a Privacy Curtain.

Most staterooms include a curtain that can be extended to bisect your room, separating the queen bed from the other sleep surfaces. This gives the parents and kids some visual privacy, though you can still everything on the other side of the room.

The privacy curtain and the television are somewhat related. On the Magic, Wonder, Dream, and Fantasy, the television is on a pivoting arm that can extend to either side of the curtain when it is extended.

On the Wish (and presumably the Treasure), the TV is hard-mounted to the wall in front of the queen bed. Following guest complaints about this situation, DCL created a workaround allowing you to stream the onboard TV content to a personal device such as a phone, tablet, or laptop.

They don’t call it the Disney DREAM for nothin’…

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

The Disney Dream was the third ship to join the ever-expanding Disney Cruise Line fleet. (Seriously… have you heard that the NEW Disney Destiny was just announced ??) The Disney Dream introduced a new class of ships to the line — the Dream Class, of course! And if it’s YOUR dream to sail on this magical ship, then we hope you’ll join us as we explore everything you and your traveling crew need to know about cruising on the Disney Dream!

Disney Dream Overview

The Disney Dream took its Maiden Voyage with passengers on January 26, 2011. The Disney Fantasy, which followed with its first sailing in 2012, is the sister ship to the Disney Dream.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

So, in both its size and structure (with 14 Decks and 1,250 Staterooms) and passenger capacity (a whopping 4,000!), it is similar to the Disney Fantasy. That said, each ship boasts some of their own distinguishing features.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

These start right in the ship’s Art deco-inspired Atrium, where a golden statue of Admiral Donald Duck himself welcomes you aboard!

Of course, among additional varied features, the ship’s itineraries differ as well…

Disney Dream Destinations

The Disney Dream primarily offers Bahamian cruises departing from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida .

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

However, the summer of 2024 holds something very unique in store for passengers on the Dream, as the ship is destined for Europe following a Transatlantic voyage from Fort Lauderdale to Barcelona ! Sailings over the summer include Mediterranean (including the Greek Isles), British Isles, Western Europe, and Norwegian Fjords (with one sailing including Iceland) cruises.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

When the Dream returns stateside, she’ll depart again from Fort Lauderdale to offer Bahamian and Caribbean cruises, and select sailings will include a stop at Disney Cruise Line’s NEW island destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point (and, of course, Disney Cruise Line’s beloved Castaway Cay )!

Check out Disney Cruise Line’s itineraries for Summer 2025 here!

Disney dream entertainment.

Unique Disney Cruise Line entertainment kicks things off RIGHT AWAY as your cruise starts with a Sailing Away Deck Party!

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

When I say “unique” that’s because the pals joining you in the entertainment throughout the voyage are none other than Disney characters!

Select sailings also present Disney Cruise Line’s famous Pirate Night (complete with FIREWORKS at sea!). And don’t forget: your CREW is invited to don all the Pirate-y garb you can pack in yer suitcase, matey!

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

When it comes to entertainment options, Disney Cruise Line is best known for its Broadway-style productions — presented in the Walt Disney Theatre — that tie in characters, beloved stories, and treasured music from the Disney films.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

The three shows that guests can enjoy on the Disney Dream are Beauty and the Beast , The Golden Mickeys, and Disney’s Believe.

Currently exclusive to the Disney Dream, Beauty and the Beast brings the “Tale As Old As Time” to you live on stage!

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

In addition to seeing the characters and hearing the songs you already know and love from the animated film, this production also includes two new pieces written by Alan Menken and Tim Rice from the live-action film.

While Beauty and the Beast puts the focus on one Disney film, Disney’s Believe and The Golden Mickeys bring together oodles and oodles of Disney stories, characters, and signature songs!  In Disney’s Believe , which Disney shares is a “spellbinding musical about a workaholic father who reconnects with his daughter through a little Disney magic,” you’ll see familiar friends from Peter Pan, Aladdin, Cinderella, The Lion King , and The Princess and the Frog.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

The Golden Mickeys is “a dazzling tribute to the enchanting movies of Walt Disney” (and it includes a red carpet pre-show!). Featured Disney films include — but aren’t limited to — Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Mulan, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Toy Story 2.

P.S. You can pay a visit to Preludes before the show to pick up some popcorn (or perhaps a cocktail) to enjoy in the theatre!

Disney Dream Water Features

Passengers of all ages can make a BIG SPLASH on Deck 11 (and even a bit higher…) of the Disney Dream! Let’s start with that part that’s “a bit higher…”

We’re talking about the Aqua Duck , the water coaster that made its debut on the Dream!

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

To ride, guests enter on Deck 12. From here? As the Disney Cruise Line website shares, you’ll take a 2-person raft on “a wet and wild journey up, down, around and off the side of the ship, through the Forward Funnel—on a daredevil 4-deck drop.”

Be aware, though, that there is a height requirement of 42 inches or taller to ride (and single riders must be at least 54 inches).

Water areas for all ages include Donald’s Pool on Deck 11, as well as a wading pool on Deck 12.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Specifically for the kiddos is Mickey’s Pool , and Nemo’s Reef in particular is a splash area for those 8 and under.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Mickeys Slide , however, can be enjoyed by passengers ages 4 to 14.

The Quiet Cove Pool is reserved for guests over 18 years of age only, as is the Satellite Falls wading pool, complete with a cooling rain curtain. In the same area, adult guests can enjoy a cocktail at the Currents pool bar (the Waves bar is another option), or step inside the Cove Café for a specialty coffee.

Disney Dream Staterooms

The Disney Dream offers four categories of staterooms: Inside, Oceanview, Verandah, and Concierge. Many of the rooms feature Disney’s innovative split bathroom which allows more guests in a cabin the chance to get ready at one time.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

While each category boasts amenities such as premium mattresses and linens, a 22″ LCD flat-screen TV, a refrigerator, and a surprising amount of storage space, there are many more details to explore among the varying categories, so we’ve dedicated a page to those options here .

Disney dream dining.

As with all the other ships in the fleet, the Disney Dream presents a wide array of options, starting with a Disney Cruise Line signature: Rotational Dining!

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Rotational Dining means that guests have the chance to enjoy dinner at ALL THREE of the ships main dining rooms, each with their own theme and specialty menus on select nights. The best part is that, as you move to a different restaurant each evening, so do your servers! They “rotate” right along with you so they can get to know your group’s dining preferences.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

The three Rotational Dining restaurants on the Disney Dream are Animator’s Palate, Enchanted Garden , and Royal Palace.

Animator’s Palate is an innovative restaurant where the show is drawings coming to life on screens all around you. Undersea Magic immerses diners in the world of  Finding Nemo .

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Dinner at the Royal Palace features French and continental cuisine in the opulence of the classic Disney fairytales Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

At Enchanted Garden, guests enjoy their meal as the restaurant changes as flowers bloom and the “sky” fades from day to night.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Be aware that Royal Palace and Enchanted Garden may also serve breakfast and lunch during a sailing, offering guests a full service option if they prefer not to dine buffet or quick service style.

A number of options are available throughout the day, as well. Cabanas hosts a massive buffet for both breakfast and lunch. Help yourself!

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Also on Deck 11, several Quick Service options serve classics like burgers, hot dogs, chicken strips and fries, pizza, and healthier fare like salads and sandwiches. These are all available at Flo’s Cafe , which is divided into three different stations: Luigi’s Pizza, Tow Mater’s Grill, and Fillmore’s Favorites.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

P.S. Don’t forget to follow up any and all of that with some soft-serve ice cream at Eye Scream Treats!

Additional treats — including scoops from a Gelato Bar —  are available for extra purchase at Vanellope’s Sweets & Treats , a charming spot themed to Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph .

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

And did you know that ROOM SERVICE is available for breakfast or snacks 24 HOURS A DAY??  The vast majority of items are INCLUDED in the cruise price!

Disney Dream Adult Spaces

In addition to the Quiet Cove mentioned earlier, the Disney Dream offers more areas reserved just for grown-ups. These include the fine dining restaurant, Palo , which may be booked for dinner for an additional charge per adult.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Additionally, the famous Palo Brunch is available for booking during sea days! This option is incredibly popular, so advance booking through your Disney Cruise Line account is recommended.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Be aware, as well, that Palo does have a dress code. The Disney Cruise Line website states: “Formal or semi-formal attire is recommended. Also permitted is dress-casual attire with a polished look, such as dress pants, jeans in good condition, collared shirts, dressy tops and lifestyle shoes. For brunch at Palo and Palo Steakhouse, dress shorts are acceptable. Clothing such as T-shirts, swimwear and sports attire are not permitted.”

The Disney Dream is also home to Remy, another adults only option that adheres to a slightly more strict dress code than Palo: Jackets for men (or collared shirt for brunch) are required and no jeans, shorts, capri pants, sneakers, or open toed shoes.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

The cuisine is exceptional French fare and reservations are required.

By the way, before or after your special meal, you might stop at Meridian , a lounge overlooking the back of the ship!

Ready to relax with a drink, or maybe even do a little dancing? Adults can pay a visit to The District , featuring several lounges, each with their own distinct style and atmosphere. District Lounge , for instance, is a relaxing piano bar, while Evolution presents late-night entertainment like dancing, games, karaoke, and comedy shows.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Pink is a Wine and Champagne Bar, while Skyline Lounge immerses you in a “sleek sky bar” boasting views of some of the world’s most iconic skylines!

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Meanwhile, sports fans can catch a game at Pub 687.

Adults might also opt to participate in a Mixology Class or Beverage Tasting Seminar for an extra fee. Featured liqueur and cocktail options include — but aren’t limited to — rum, tequila and margaritas, whiskey, champagne tastings, and more!

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Advance booking is highly recommended for these fun and VERY popular opportunities!

The Senses Spa & Salon offers a wide array of services and treatments. (And the Rainforest Room provides an especially relaxing oasis!) Select experiences are available for pre-booking, and you can stop by Senses to inquire about prices for the Rainforest Room and other treatments during your cruise. And the Fitness Center offers workout machines and classes.

And though this is not limited to adults, keep in mind that if you’d like to get a jog or two in, Deck 4 hosts a walking track!

Disney Dream Kids Clubs and Experiences

But what about the kids? Oh, don’t you worry… there are specific areas on the ship dedicated to children, offering experiences tailored for ages from infants to teens!

The It’s a Small World Nursery is available for ages 6 months to 3 years old (save for the Transatlantic cruise, during which the nursery welcomes ages 1 to 3 years old).

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Be aware that the Disney Cruise Line website states that “Reservations can be made on a first-come, first-served basis during the open house on Embarkation Day or anytime throughout your cruise. Childcare at “it’s a small world” nursery! is available at an additional fee.” Disney also emphasizes that space is limited.

Meanwhile, Disney’s Oceaneer Club AND Disney’s Oceaneer Lab are available for children ages 3 to 10. The Oceaneer Lab specializes in learning while having FUN!

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

The Oceaneer Club features activities such as character experiences, storytime, and play areas. (There are also specific guided activities for the littlest ones, ages 3 and 4.)

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

On the Dream, the Oceaneer Club features the following playful spaces: Andy’s Room (that’s Andy from Toy Story ), the Disney Infinity Game Room, Pixie Hollow , and Star Wars : Millennium Falcon.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Keep in mind that Youth Activities counselors are present at all times in these spaces. Parents will want to know that spaces for your child can be pre-registered via your Disney Cruise Line account, and registration may also take place onboard the ship.

Tweens (ages 11 to 14) can gather at the Edge to hang out, watch movies, play games and make friends during group activities with fun Disney counselors and more. And you want to know something really cool? Edge is located in the ship’s Forward Funnel on Deck 13!

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Vibe offers cruisers ages 14 to 17 similar activities geared to their age group, or simply a place to chill. It even boasts its own sun deck on the Dream.

We’ve got one more thing to mention, though it’s not a club, per se. For an extra fee, your little Prince or Princess age 3 to 12 can get a makeover at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique .

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Disney Princess, knight, and sea captain-themed packages are available… and there’s an exclusive makeover for Pirate Party Nights!

But we’re STILL not done… because children ages 3-12 can partake in a special tea party with Disney characters. Children get gifts including a jewelry box, tiara, bracelet, necklace, a Cinderella doll, and autograph book. Alternatively they can opt for a package including a cinch bag, sword, shield, pins, Duffy plush, and autograph book. The Disney Cruise Line site will have pricing information available when you book via your Disney Cruise Line account in advance.

Disney Dream Activities

Still want MORE to do 😉 ? That’s good, because the Disney Dream has GOT MORE! D Lounge, for example, is the place to be for family fun with events like game shows and trivia, dance parties,  and more.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Catch a movie on the big screen at the Buena Vista Theatre ! You might choose to watch a Disney animated classic, or maybe a Star Wars or Marvel flick. You never know… your sailing just might feature a first-run Disney feature film at sea! “Funnel Vision” on the pool deck shows movies on the big screen, too.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

You can find basketball courts and ping-pong tables on Goofy’s Sports Deck. (My personal favorite option here? It’s 9-hole MINI GOLF!)

Want to explore all sorts of areas on the ship while SOLVING A MYSTERY, to boot? Then get ready to play Midship Detective Agency.  You and your fellow detectives will interact with “enchanted art” in locations all over the ship to gather clues and crack a case wide open! In fact, there are 3 cases to solve (including, but not limited to a MUPPETS-themed caper), so you can play several times — on your own or with your crew — if you like!

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

And let’s not forget that throughout your cruise, you can meet, hug, get autographs from and pose for pictures with your favorite DISNEY PALS!

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

Sailing with you are the Fab Five (that’s Mickey and the gang), Disney Princesses, friends from Frozen , and more! Be aware that, while all Character Greetings are included with your cruise, select Greeting times may require advance booking.

Seasonal Sailings

Depending on the time of year, you may find that a special seasonal cruise is in store! For instance, select sailings on the Dream offer a Marvel Day at Sea !

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

And all ships in the fleet present Halloween on the High Seas in September and October, while Very Merrytime Cruises sail in November and December.

Disney Cruise Line Navigator App

Whew! As you can tell, there’s a LOT happening on the Disney Dream! To keep track of what’s happening when and where, be sure to download the free Disney Cruise Line Navigator app before your cruise.

upgrade stateroom disney cruise

This is where you can easily find ALL of the activities mentioned throughout this post, book select experiences, check out menus for the ship’s dining locations, and MUCH more!

What Is Stateroom GTY On Disney Cruise

Published: December 9, 2023

Modified: December 28, 2023

by Meridel Hawks

what-is-stateroom-gty-on-disney-cruise

Introduction

Going on a cruise vacation is an exciting and memorable experience. One of the key aspects of planning a cruise is selecting the right stateroom. Disney Cruise Line offers a unique accommodation option called Stateroom Guaranteed (GTY) that can add a level of excitement and surprise to your trip.

Unlike traditional stateroom bookings, where you can choose a specific room category and location, opting for a Stateroom GTY allows Disney Cruise Line to assign you a stateroom closer to your sailing date. This means that you won’t know the exact location and category of your stateroom until just before your departure.

While this may sound unconventional, the Stateroom GTY option offers several benefits and can be an excellent choice for some cruisers. In this article, we will explore what Stateroom GTY is, how it works on Disney Cruise Line, and the pros and cons of opting for this accommodation option.

What is Stateroom GTY?

Stateroom GTY, short for Stateroom Guaranteed, is an accommodation option offered by Disney Cruise Line. It differs from the traditional stateroom booking process because you do not select a specific stateroom category or location when making your reservation. Instead, you are guaranteed a stateroom of a specific category and minimum amenities, but the exact room assignment is left to the discretion of the cruise line.

When you opt for a Stateroom GTY, you choose a specific category, such as an Inside, Oceanview, or Balcony stateroom, but you do not have control over the exact room number, deck, or location. This can add an element of surprise and adventure to your cruise experience.

It’s essential to understand that the Stateroom GTY option does not mean you will be upgraded to a higher category stateroom. Instead, it allows Disney Cruise Line to allocate rooms based on availability and optimize the ship’s occupancy.

Keep in mind that Stateroom GTY options may vary by cruise line and itinerary. Disney Cruise Line typically offers Stateroom GTY on select sailings, and the availability is limited. It’s always recommended to check the cruise line’s official website or consult with a travel agent to determine if Stateroom GTY is an option for your specific cruise.

How does Stateroom GTY work on Disney Cruise?

Once you have booked a Stateroom GTY on a Disney Cruise, the process works as follows:

  • The cruise line will assign you a stateroom of the category you selected. You will receive your stateroom assignment shortly before your sailing date.
  • Your stateroom will meet the minimum requirements of the category you chose. For example, if you opted for an Oceanview stateroom, you will be guaranteed a stateroom with a window or porthole to provide a view of the ocean.
  • The exact location of your stateroom could be anywhere within the category you selected. It could be on any deck, forward or aft, or in a central location. The assignment is determined based on availability and at the discretion of Disney Cruise Line.
  • Disney Cruise Line will not entertain specific requests for stateroom location or adjacent staterooms when you book a Stateroom GTY. This is because the cruise line assigns rooms based on availability and occupancy optimization.
  • It’s important to note that there is a possibility of receiving a room upgrade when you book a Stateroom GTY. While not guaranteed, it can happen if there are cancellations or changes to the original bookings. However, it’s essential to have realistic expectations and not count on an upgrade as part of the Stateroom GTY experience.

Overall, Stateroom GTY offers a sense of anticipation and surprise, as you won’t know the exact location and details of your stateroom until just before your cruise. It’s a unique way to add a bit of adventure to your vacation while enjoying the same amenities and services offered to all guests onboard.

Pros and Cons of opting for Stateroom GTY

Choosing a Stateroom GTY on a Disney Cruise has its advantages and disadvantages. Let’s take a closer look at the pros and cons:

  • Potential cost savings: Booking a Stateroom GTY often comes with a lower price tag compared to selecting a specific stateroom. This can be appealing for budget-conscious cruisers looking to save some money while still enjoying a fantastic cruise experience.
  • Surprise and adventure: Not knowing the exact location of your stateroom until close to your sailing date can add an element of excitement and surprise to your vacation. It can be thrilling to discover your accommodations onboard and explore the ship from a different perspective.
  • Optimal use of ship occupancy: Stateroom GTY allows the cruise line to optimize the ship’s occupancy by assigning rooms based on availability. This can be beneficial for guests who prioritize a lower cost or are flexible with their stateroom preferences.
  • Lack of control over location: Opting for Stateroom GTY means surrendering the ability to choose the exact location and deck of your stateroom. This may not be ideal for guests who prefer a specific area of the ship or have preferences for being close to certain amenities.
  • Potential for undesirable room placement: While Disney Cruise Line aims to provide comfortable accommodations, there is a possibility of being assigned a stateroom in a less desirable location, such as near high-traffic areas or noisy sections of the ship. However, keep in mind that undesirable placements are relatively rare.
  • Inability to request specific room features: When choosing a Stateroom GTY, you cannot request specific features or amenities, such as an adjoining room or a specific bed configuration. The cruise line assigns rooms based on availability and their discretion, which may not always align with your preferences.

Ultimately, the decision to opt for a Stateroom GTY comes down to personal preferences and priorities. If you’re seeking cost savings and an element of surprise, and you’re flexible with room location, a Stateroom GTY might be an excellent choice. However, if having control over your stateroom’s exact location and features is essential to you, it’s advisable to book a specific stateroom category instead.

Is Stateroom GTY the right choice for you?

Deciding whether Stateroom GTY is the right choice for your Disney Cruise experience depends on your personal preferences and priorities. Consider the following factors to determine if it aligns with your needs:

Flexibility:

Opting for Stateroom GTY requires a certain level of flexibility. If you are open to being surprised by your stateroom assignment and are not particular about the exact location or features of your accommodations, then Stateroom GTY can be a great fit. It adds an element of adventure and excitement to your cruise.

For those looking to save some money on their cruise, Stateroom GTY can be an attractive option. It often comes with a lower price tag compared to selecting a specific stateroom category, allowing you to allocate your budget towards other aspects of your vacation.

Room location:

If having control over the exact location of your stateroom is important to you, then Stateroom GTY may not be the ideal choice. Keep in mind that while the cruise line aims to provide comfortable accommodations, you won’t have the ability to request specific deck placements or proximity to specific amenities. If being in a certain part of the ship is crucial, booking a specific stateroom category would better suit your needs.

Adventure and surprise:

If the excitement of not knowing your stateroom assignment until close to your sailing date appeals to you, Stateroom GTY can offer a sense of adventure. Exploring the ship from a different perspective and discovering your accommodations onboard can add a unique touch to your cruise experience.

Ultimately, the decision to choose a Stateroom GTY or not depends on your individual preferences and priorities for your Disney Cruise. If you value flexibility, potential cost savings, and the thrill of surprise, then Stateroom GTY could be the right choice for you. However, if having control over the exact location of your stateroom and specific room features is essential, you may prefer to book a specific stateroom category instead.

Opting for a Stateroom GTY on a Disney Cruise can be an exciting and cost-effective choice for those seeking a touch of adventure and surprise in their vacation. By relinquishing control over the exact location and features of your stateroom, you open yourself up to the possibility of enjoying potential cost savings and the joy of discovering your accommodations onboard.

While there are pros and cons to consider, such as the lack of control over room placement and the potential for undesirable locations, Stateroom GTY can be a fantastic option for cruisers who prioritize flexibility and are open to unexpected experiences. The potential for room upgrades further adds to the allure, although it is important not to count on them as guaranteed.

Before deciding on a Stateroom GTY, it is essential to reflect on your priorities and preferences. If having control over your stateroom’s location and specific features is crucial to you, booking a specific stateroom category may be a better fit. However, if you are willing to embrace surprise, enjoy potential cost savings, and have an adventurous spirit, then Stateroom GTY can be a thrilling choice for your Disney Cruise.

Remember, it’s always advisable to check with the cruise line or consult with a travel agent to gather the most up-to-date information and determine the availability of Stateroom GTY for your desired sailing date. With careful consideration, you can make the right choice that aligns with your vacation goals and ensures a memorable and enjoyable Disney Cruise experience.

Staterooms – Frequently Asked Questions

I've booked my cruise. Can I still change or upgrade my stateroom?

Many staterooms can be changed or upgraded, although certain requirements and restrictions do apply. Because your cruise’s price is based on the specific travel details, any changes you make may affect the price.

If your stateroom is eligible to be modified, changing or upgrading your reservation is easy to do online. Just sign in to the My Cruise Reservations page to access your reservation information and select “View Details” next to the cruise listing.

If you decide to change your stateroom, you’ll be able to upgrade or modify your category, type or location, subject to availability. If your reservation includes more than one stateroom, you will need to view or make changes to each room individually.

Things To Do Before A Disney Cruise

I f you are planning on taking a Disney cruise, it can be a little overwhelming to think of everything that you need to do before you leave. But preparing in advance will make for an even better experience, so check out this list of things to do before a Disney cruise, and get ready to cruise! Once you get on board, you’ll want to relax and enjoy your vacation.

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links, and purchasing and/or clicking on some of the links (or calling the number) in this post may result in a commission paid to us at no additional expense to you. We have traveled on one media cruise and two cruises as part of Disney Social Media Moms. I’ve paid full price for thirteen additional cruises over the years.

Things to Do Before A Disney Cruise

Get your dining time booked.

The Disney Cruise Line offers two meal times – the main seating (between 5:45 pm and 6:15 pm) and the second seating (between 8 pm and 8:30 pm). The first seating fills up quickly, so if that’s what you want, be sure to reserve it early – when you book your cruise vacation.

A waiting list is available if you are unable to find the time you want. Additionally, you can request to switch meal times once onboard. However, it’s easiest to do it in advance.

If you don’t get the time that you want, don’t worry. We typically eat pretty early at home, and once ended up with the later time because we booked our cruise last minute.

It was fine, however. Because the nightly shows generally run at the opposite times as dinner, you’re either going to eat late or watch the show late. There are lots of places to grab a quick bite if you get hungry before your seating.

Plan Your Hotel the Night Before

If you are flying into your port of call, I recommend arriving the night before. That way, you won’t have to worry about flight delays and can schedule an earlier onboard time (if that’s something you’ll need to do). During our 2022 sailing, our bags were left behind in Boston. It was great to have that extra day to wait for them to arrive before boarding.

When staying overnight, you can choose to stay by the port, at the airport, at Walt Disney World (if cruising out of Port Canaveral), or somewhere else in the area.

When we cruise out of Port Canaveral, we stay at the Hyatt Regency Orlando Airport . See reviews on TripAdvisor .

During my cruise on the Disney Magic, we decided to stay near the Miami airport at a Homewood Suites. It had a free shuttle from the airport, and is a quick ride to the Miami Cruise Port. Alternatively, you could choose to stay in South Beach, right in the center of the action. We enjoyed our stay at the Marriott Vacation Club Pulse South Beach .

Book Transportation to the Port

If you are flying to your port, you’ll need to get to the port somehow. Disney shuttle buses are available for an additional fee (depending on the port), or you can rent a car and drive to the port yourself (remember that parking at the port is available, but costs extra).

Private transportation, including car services or Uber, is also an option. For Port Canaveral, I find that Disney transportation is the best option, because it’s easy and convenient. You can also book one-way transportation if you aren’t going directly back to the airport or Walt Disney World.

Check-In As Soon As You Can

When you complete the Disney Cruise check in process, you can choose your onboard time (those who book transportation through Disney will no longer choose an onboard time) and book your excursions and special dinners.

So, when can you check in to your Disney cruise? Silver Castaway Club members (one cruise) can check in 33 days before sailing, gold members (five cruises) can check in 35 days before sailing, platinum members (ten cruises) can check in 38 days before sailing and pearl members (twenty-five cruises) can check in 40 days before sailing.

If this is your first cruise, you’ll need to wait until 30 days before sailing. Since the earlier onboard times are typically taken first sure to check in as soon as possible.

Additionally, there’s a separate booking window for reserving port excursions (including the ever-popular Castaway Cay cabanas ), adult dining, and other onboard experiences. Silver Castaway Club members (one cruise) can book 90 days before sailing, gold members (five cruises) can check in 105 days before sailing, platinum members (ten cruises) can check in 120 days before sailing and pearl members (twenty-five cruises) can check in 123 days before sailing.

Why check in early? Some excursions and Palo times do book up in advance, so you’ll get the best availability by booking early. It’s also extremely difficult to get a cabana at Castaway Cay, so you’ll want to try for one as soon as you can if you want one.

When you check-in, you’ll also fill out the guest information form and the payment authorization form for your onboard purchases, and upload your passport and headshot. Be ready with all of those things for your entire family when you check-in.

Schedule Your Excursions and Any Special Meals

When your booking window opens, you are also able to book port excursions and meals at Palo and Remy/Enchante (if your ship has Remy or Enchante). Again, these are all limited, so book as soon as possible.

You are usually not charged right away – but confirm that when booking. Changes can often be made, but you’ll want to have a good idea of what you want to do and availability may be limited when you go back in to make changes.

I’d recommend doing some research on your ports of call well before your booking window opens. Decide what types of things you want to do at each location. You’ll have lots of options, from educational things to more adventurous activities. Some families may decide to do a mix of things during their cruise.

You don’t necessarily need to do an excursion at each port. Some people choose to stay onboard because the ship can be much quieter with most people gone.

You can also opt to do your own thing – by taking a cab or just walking around the port. Research that first, however, because you want to make sure it’s safe, that you won’t get lost, and that you can definitely make it back to the ship in time for all aboard.

Booking an excursion from the cruise line can be the safer option with regards to getting back on the ship before it leaves. It will also be refunded if your cruise has to miss that port for weather or other reasons.

Special Services

If you need special services on board, like a Sharps box, a communication kit (for guests who are deaf or hard of hearing), or a wheelchair-accessible room, you can fill out a form you’ll find online during the check-in process. Because my daughter has food allergies, I like to make sure that it is noted on our reservation.

You’ll also want to call if you have any special requests. Guarantees aren’t offered, but you can always request a specific dining rotation or server. On our second sailing of the Disney Fantasy, I called and requested our favorite server who we had on our first sailing.

He was still on the ship, and they were able to make sure we got assigned to him. Of course, crew members are always moving around, so there’s no guarantee that your favorite will still be on board.

If you have a specific restaurant you love, and your cruise is at least 4 days, you may want to request that you eat at that spot more than 2 or 3 times. My kids love Animator’s Palate, so we’ve asked to be assigned to that restaurant three times on a seven-day sailing.

Sign Kids Up for Youth Clubs

Disney Cruise Line’s kids’ club is free to attend, but you’ll save time by registering your children in advance. Don’t worry – you won’t have to select attendance times! Once your kids are registered and have their bands, they can go in and out as many times as you’d like.

There are also open house times on the first day where you can go in and see what the clubs are like.

Fish Extenders

Fish extenders are totally optional, but they are a really fun way to enhance your cruise. To participate, first find your cruise on Facebook and join your cruise group.

Then you can sign up for a fish extender exchange if someone is organizing one. Then, you’ll need to buy/make a fish extender to hang on the “fish” near your stateroom door.

Finally, you’ll need to make or purchase a bunch of fun little treats for your fellow cruisers.

My kids love prepping our fish extender gifts before we leave, and then always enjoy coming back to the room for a new surprise. It’s a lot of work, but can be rewarding.

Here’s everything you need to know about Fish Extenders .

Get Decorations for Your Stateroom Door

Lots of families decorate their stateroom doors before going on a Disney cruise, so check out my post on decorating your Disney Cruise Line stateroom door . You’ll want to purchase or make these decorations well before your sailing.

When booking a Disney Cruise, I recommend booking with Get Away Today. Plus, when you mention Family Travel Magazine, you get an extra $25 on board credit! Give their agents a call at 877-510-2929.

On a separate note: For cruises leaving from Port Canaveral, we stay at the Hyatt Regency Orlando Airport .  Check prices and reviews here .
