How to Become a Travel Agent—Because Believe It or Not the Industry Is on the Rise

There’s a reason “how to become a travel agent” has been a continuously trending search phrase on Google—it is a career path that offers a flexible work environment and schedule, ample travel opportunities, and an immersion into a supportive world-wide industry. It's a surprise to some in 2023: Once the internet became widely available, it was largely believed that needing a travel agent was obsolete. However, even though the brick-and-mortar agencies with punny names in strip malls have vanished, the career is on-the-rise .

New software options are making it easier than ever for people to make money planning trips, either as a side hustle or as a full-time business. That’s why Cherikonda, India-based stay-at-home mother, Maya Kapoor-Miller, decided to enter the professional world as a travel agent this year, at 31. “I knew nothing about the travel industry prior to signing up,” says Kapoor-Miller, who decided to use San Francisco-based booking platform Dreamport to establish her online travel advisor business. “It is my first business in life, and the only one that you can start with no investment.”

But there's also a rise in demand. When people ventured back into the world after the pandemic, travel agents saw an overwhelming amount of business . And that momentum hasn’t stopped—when travel is complicated, like it was in 2020 and 2021, travelers turned to professional trip planners to create a seamless vacation. For better or worse, traveling has remained complicated and chaotic, with new rules being implemented (like Americans needing to pay a fee to visit Europe in 2024 ) and airline strikes and staffing issues. Offloading all of the nitty-gritty details to someone else is more appealing than ever.

For those entering the field, there's also the age-old motivator: a love of travel.

Shelton Ellis, who is based in North Carolina, recently saw these opportunities and left behind more than 20 years in public relations and global advertising to turn his passion into a career. “I was born with a wanderlust that would wear Rick Steves out,” Ellis says. “I decided to take the leap and follow that lifelong yearning. Transitioning into this role was really about learning how to monetize what I'm passionate about.”

Whether you are looking for a new career path or a lucrative side-hustle—or simply curious about those taking the plunge—here’s how to become a travel agent, from the qualifications and education required, to anticipated earnings, according to those who have made the shift in the past year.

What exactly does a travel agent do?

Travel agents, or travel advisors (the term is mostly interchangeable), manage everything that goes into a trip for their clients: the flights, car transfers, accommodations, restaurant reservations, and more—they even inspire the itinerary. The reason people turn to travel agents, aside from having a helping hand during any travel chaos , is also to tap into the travel agent’s first-hand knowledge of destinations, and their industry partnerships, which often lead to perks such as hotel upgrades, ideal airplane seats, and experiences that can’t be found on a search engine.

“You have to remember that as a travel agent, you will be a guide for people during their happiest moments—family reunions, weddings , baptisms, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences that people have dreamt of,” says Kapoor-Miller. “It has been one of the most rewarding aspects of being a travel agent. You navigate people, inform them, and help them choose.”

So, how do you become a travel agent?

There are many ways to become a travel agent, from joining an existing travel agency , to starting an independent business from the ground up. Others are opting for one of the buzziest start-ups in the travel industry, Fora . When it launched in 2021, the software company, which trains and provides search engine-optimized profile pages to advisors—at one point had a waitlist of over 30,000 people eager to begin a part-time gig. Travel photographer and Condé Nast Traveler contributor Amanda Villarosa is currently in the process of joining.

“I'm the person that friends and family come to for travel recommendations, tips and tricks, and general travel advice,” says Villarosa. “After discovering Fora and looking into it, I realized that it could be the perfect side-hustle, considering I'm already so involved in the industry.”

With additional flexibility, Villarosa was able to move from New York City to splitting her time between Denver and Los Angeles . She says that the sign-up was quite straightforward. “You're given a dedicated Fora email and have access to advising tools and fellow Fora advisors,” she says. “The training is in the form of Zoom meetings and videos, which you have the option to watch at your own pace. Once completed, you take a certification quiz and you're on your way to advising.”

The other ways in are slightly more involved. To begin an independent practice, you go about it like many other businesses. You will have to create an LLC, establish a business name, cultivate marketing materials, build a website, find clientele, and more.

Ellis found something in the middle, choosing to connect with an established travel agency. “Don't be afraid to reach out to an agency looking to take on new advisors and is willing to mentor," says Ellis. "I was fortunate to learn so much from Annie Chambers, the owner of Crafted Escapes , who has seven years in the business.” He now knows the ropes on everything from using itinerary-building software to destination-specific training, to the sales and marketing aspects of the trade.

Is there required education or qualifications?

Ellis says that there's no certification, per se, required to become a travel advisor, but there are countless training courses available like Departure Lounge ’s classes on navigating the industry through hotels and tour operators. He said it’s also important to stay on top of travel trends. Ellis recently completed travel agent training programs provided by premier cruise lines such as Virgin Voyages , Ritz-Carlton Yachts , and Cunard to help agents sell their products more accurately.

How much does a travel agent make?

What a travel agent earns depends on how many trips they successfully book for their clients. The entire model is commission-based, meaning agents earn a percentage of the total cost of the vacation they orchestrate. Many travel advisors choose to charge a flat-rate planning fee in addition to their commission, but balance is key—if you charge a high planning fee, it could lead to potential clients going elsewhere.

Fora ’s website states that “some of our full-time, expert advisors earn well into the six figures (or beyond).” So a lucrative career may be on the horizon, for those who are able to build a robust client base and excellent industry connections.

How much you make can also depend on where you live around the world. “I am being paid in dollars,” says India-based Kapoor-Miller. “So the currency fluctuations of the local exchange rate are not something I am worried about.”

What are the key skills required to become a travel agent?

“Travel agents need a mix of customer service, communication, destination knowledge, organizational, and problem-solving skills,” says Kapoor-Miller. “But I would say that adaptability, flexibility, curiosity, and cultural sensitivity top them all—you have to put yourself in other's shoes, and understand the requirements, hopes, and expectations of your clients along with any worries and questions they may have.”

It’s vital to have a passion for traveling, even the aspects of the process that aren’t as exciting, such as learning about new airline routes, train schedule updates, and industry news. “It can be an information-heavy hustle, and I believe it's important to be excited about it as that energy definitely transfers to your clients and partners,” Villarosa says.

Should travel advisors choose a specialization?

Many travel advisors have found success through becoming an expert in a few types of travel and destinations. “It's important to become an authority and learn as much as you can through personal experiences and continuing education,” says Ellis. “As a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community , an avid snow skier, and scuba diver, I know not only the popular destinations but others that are off the beaten path, equally safe and adventurous for all travelers.” This helps travel agents establish a competitive edge, and hopefully convince potential clients to choose them for their expertise.

What are the benefits of being a travel agent?

“Flexibility tops them all,” says Kapoor-Miller. “And the ability to start without industry knowledge. If you worry that you are too old for this job, the good news is that this is a job you can enter and enjoy at any age.”

Another great perk is the "Familiarization trip,” says Ellis. “Tourism boards and hotels invite agents to visit and familiarize themselves with a particular country and its properties. After all, any accomplished salesperson should learn everything they can about their products first-hand...even if they're in Bora Bora.” It's hard work, but someone's got to do it.

How to become a Travel Agent in 2023

Being a travel agent is a rewarding but demanding career. there are many avenues you can take to become one which gives you many options but you might need some guidance. here we give you what you need to get started in 2023..

being a travel agent in 2023

So you want to be a travel agent, huh?

Maybe you’ve reached a point in your life that you want to make a change and you have always loved traveling so why not try it out. Or maybe you’ve just gone on your first big international adventure and now that you’ve caught the travel bug, you want to do it for a living. Or maybe you’re a very experienced traveler and you want to share your knowledge. Or maybe the practical perks of being a travel agent drove you to consider it - working flexible hours, being your own boss, and working from home.

Whichever one you are, you’re headed into an exciting and rewarding career. One which has been revered in the classy 1970’s and one which has been dragged through the mud during Covid. If there was ever a right time to join, though, it would be now. The travel industry is growing massively but the travel agent market is growing four times faster. And that is because of the demand for personal and professional support while planning trips.

But since you’re researching how to become a travel agent, you already realize that it is not a very straightforward process to get into the industry. There are trainings, new tools, and official government things you need to take care of before you can get started. Not to mention other questions I’m sure you have like “what if covid comes back”, “how will I make enough money”, or “I don’t know how to run a business”. While we cannot answer these questions for you, we can help you get started.

learning

The boring stuff: Licenses and certifications

I’ve got good news for you! To sell travel products and services, you do not need any certifications. That’s right - you can get out there and start selling. But maybe you want to brush up on some business skills and get some industry knowledge first. Good, let’s talk about your options.

  • The Travel Institute - Certified Travel Associate $550
  • Hopper - Bunny Bootcamp $299
  • IATA - Essentials for Travel Agents $399

Just like in any profession, continuous learning and understanding the latest trends, technologies, and threats will keep you on top of your game and help you grow your brand and business. For travel agents, there are hundreds of great resources to keep you up to date on everything you need to know to keep your clients happy, safe, and on time. You will find your favorites over time.

  • Travel and Leisure - a staple of the travel industry
  • TravelPulse - trending topics in travel
  • Skift - trustworthy news and industry report
  • PhocusWire - technology focused news arm of PhocusWright

The best way to learn, however, is just getting out there and starting to work with clients. They will tell you what you need to improve and it’s better than spending months on getting trained on every topic under the sun when you likely will not use those skills at the beginning. Please keep in mind that if you want to purchase flights via IATA, you will need to be accredited by them.

working man

Operating as a tourism business

There are a few ways you can get started as a travel agent, ranging in independence, risk, and reward. Starting with least independence - you can either become an employee of an existing travel agency, become an independent agent at a host agency, partner with some other agents, or start your own business and eventually hire employees.

Working at a travel agency

Definitely starting with some certifications and training will help and be sure to update your resume/CV to suit your new career. You can expect to get an hourly or yearly salary and share some of the commissions from your sales. This is a great way to get into the industry and build up some experience before jumping totally into being an independent agent.

Host agency

If you’re not quite ready to be fully independent and responsible for all operations, transactions, and software subscriptions, you can join a host agency . To use the name, systems and relationships of the host agency, they will need compensation, but this may look very different from company to company. Generally speaking you can expect to pay some monthly host costs ($150-$1000) and they will take 10-50% of your commissions.

Starting your own company

If you want to fully commit to your calling of being a travel agent, setting up your own company is the best way to have control over how you do business, in which regions, specialties, and how much business you want to do. A good way to start is to find a partner or group of other travel agents who want to work together. Otherwise starting on your own will give you the biggest reward and you can choose when to hire employees and grow your business.

To do this, you will need to set up your business in the state or country you will be operating in. For the US, start by setting up a LLC and get a business license for the state you will host your company. Make sure to put together a business plan and decide which regions and specialities you want to focus on at the beginning. Business set up costs can range from $300-$1000. Something to note is that you can create your company as part of a franchise .

Lastly, you will need to determine how you will make money and charge your customers. Most travel agents make their money through commissions, but this can constrain the choice of experience for the client and brings the risk that you will plan a trip in detail only for the potential customer to walk away with your itinerary and book it themselves. At Ravel Trips , we charge customers a small planning fee in order to secure their trip and ensure the trip planner can spend the amount of time he or she really needs to plan an amazing journey. You are welcome to join as a partner and be part of the Ravel Marketplace to sell your services to clients on the platform and charge them a planning fee to secure their trip while you plan it for them.

tools of the trade

Tools of the trade

Travel agents are involved before, during, and after their client’s trip. That means that trust, organization, and communication are extremely important - so you need the tools to keep all of that in check.

You will need to create a brand, attract customers and convert the sale. This will be a lot of work at the beginning so be smart about where you put your energy.

  • Email campaigns , websites , social media, spending ad dollars to fight against companies just like you. That’s a lot of different channels, a lot of different skills needed, and a lot of time
  • On Ravel Trips , travel professionals can publish real trips they have planned in the past (and even sell them as templates). One place for clients to search and filter to find the perfect agent for them - that could be you! You can still include your trips on your website with our trip widget.

CRM (Customer Relationship Management)

Managing your customer flow through sales, retention and re-conversion will be key to making sure you are bringing in business and measuring how well you do it.

  • Salesforce ($25-325), Zoho ($25-100), SugarCRM ($52-1000), Freshworks ($19-125) - these are strong CRMs used broadly across many industries.
  • Ravel Trips (free trial then $10) is built for purpose focusing only on the acquisition, conversion, and retargeting. Ravel has a focus on efficiency. You will not hold on to every customer because they may not return to your country, but at least in the Ravel ecosystem you can acquire those clients from similar businesses to you

Itinerary Builder

Of course you will need to share beautiful itineraries with your clients and this is where targeted and efficient feedback is important.

  • Tourwriter ($39-250), Tripcreator ($70) are two examples of really great itinerary builders, which you can share after you build the trip. Tripcreator even has a mobile app you can get with agency branding for $1000 set up $350 monthly maintenance fee.
  • Ravel Trips is about constant collaboration so you can quickly adjust the plan to keep your customer happy and make the sale earlier since they feel part of the process. The Ravel Trips consumer mobile app is free for all users.

Plus, we’ve got tips on how to get started and land your first clients.

So whether you are just starting to explore the idea of becoming an independent travel agent or you are ready to take the plunge into the travel industry , this article is for you.

First things first. What’s an independent travel agent?

Fora's Live Forum 2023, an annual conference that brings together Fora Advisors and top industry professionals

A travel agent (also known as a travel advisor) is someone who earns money by booking travel and helping clients make travel arrangements. You can book leisure travel or corporate travel, or both. You are essentially working as a travel consultant. If you want to dive deeper into the nitty gritty, learn more in our article: what is a travel agent?

An independent travel agent is a self-employed travel agent (someone who works for themselves). You call the shots and you can work part-time or full-time. It’s also a career path that you can build up over time (for example, transitioning from part-time to full-time). Independent travel agents are entrepreneurs.

Typically, independent travel agents work as independent contractors with a host agency. A host agency is a business that provides support and resources such as training, partnerships and tools to their agents. Independent agents leverage these resources while maintaining their own brand and business operations. This arrangement allows independent agents to compete more effectively in the market without the overhead costs of developing these resources independently.

If you’re looking to become an independent travel agent, you'll want to choose your host agency wisely. At Fora, we offer an all-in-one solution for everything you need to succeed as an independent travel advisor. Learn more about our membership program .

Skills you need to become a successful travel agent

Fora Advisor Gaya Vinay

Whether it's planning a dream vacation, booking a cruise line or organizing an adventurous expedition, travel agents bring their expertise, creativity and enthusiasm to every booking.

If you’ve never booked travel for someone else before, don’t stress – passion for travel and a willingness to learn is the biggest criteria to get started.

"Prior to working with Fora, I had only planned trips for myself and other family members," Fora Advisor Jennifer Lopez shared. "Working as a travel advisor had always appealed to me but I couldn't figure out how to do it on my own in a way that made sense. That is, I couldn't figure it out until I came across Fora."

As you dive in, you’ll start to hone your ability to sell travel. This includes being able to identify client needs, build rapport and close deals. Agents must also be able to provide excellent customer service, which means being responsive to client inquiries, resolving any issues that arise and going the extra mile to ensure client satisfaction. In other words, you’re someone who loves helping others.

Another important skill for independent travel agents is the ability to conduct research. This includes nerding out on building an itinerary, as well as being able to compare prices. We have an all-in-one booking platform for travel advisors that helps makes the latter part easier.

Of course, you’ll want to stay up-to-date on the latest travel trends. At Fora, we have ongoing training sessions for you to stay in-the-know on the latest updates in the travel industry, plus you’ll join a top-notch community of fellow Fora Advisors who are willing and eager to share their tips with you.

Finally, independent travel agents need to be able to market themselves and their business. This means putting yourself out there, creating marketing materials and networking with potential clients. Learn more about how Fora helps you build your book of business .

How to become an independent travel agent: a step-by-step guide

being a travel agent in 2023

Becoming a travel agent takes work and dedication. But if you stick with it, a career as a travel advisor can be rewarding in both an “I love my job!” kind of way and in a lucrative sense.

Let’s break down the steps in broad strokes.

1. Find a host agency

As an independent travel advisor, you’ll likely want to partner with a host agency. You’ll work as an independent contractor, and the host agency offers infrastructure that will cover everything from commission tracking and payments to preferred programs with top travel brands.

"Once I decided that I wanted to become a travel agent, I spent quite a lot of time researching the many available host agencies," Fora Advisor Jennifer Lopez said. "When I came across Fora, I knew instantly that I had found the perfect fit for me. Fora's emphasis on technology and innovation appealed to me. I also appreciated their openness to what kind of business I wanted for myself. If I wanted travel advising to be my full-time job, Fora would help make that happen. If I wanted to do travel advising part-time and only book travel occasionally, Fora was open to that as well."

At Fora, we pride ourselves on our holistic approach to supporting our advisors. We offer training, community, technology, marketing tools and seamless payments. We’re also part of every major preferred partner program , and we have our own in-house program (Fora Reserve) as well – so you’ll be able to offer your clients a wide variety of perks and upgrades while getting a competitive commission at the same time. Learn more becoming a travel advisor with Fora .

"From the day I started working as a Fora Advisor, I had all of the tech tools and educational resources available to help launch my new career," Fora Advisor Jennifer Lopez said. "I have also had the support and advice of all of my fellow Fora Advisors, which is an invaluable help when I am booking travel to places that are unfamiliar to me. With all of those elements, I was able to hit the ground running and make bookings from day one.

2. Get formal training

Once you join a host agency, you’ll want to dive into training. There is a lot to learn... You’ll want to learn the lingo (like what a DMC is), as well as the basics of how to make a booking. By the way, training as a travel advisor is ongoing. Even experienced travel advisors participate in ongoing training to stay in-the-know. We love that working as a travel advisor is one of the best roles to be a professional life-time learner.

Fora offers extensive travel agent training (taught by experienced travel pros at the forefront of the industry) and travel agent certification .

"If I had to describe Fora's training program in one word, it would be robust," Fora Advisor Caroline Weilert said. "I love that Fora considers all angles related to training - business planning, destination overviews, hotel spotlights, mentorship programs, supplier overviews – and that it provides webinars, live trainings, recordings and best of all, access to the entire supplier community. Everyone at Fora is a learner and a trainer because we all have different types of knowledge to share with each other."

It's worth noting the our training is also flexible: it is offered online and you can take it at your own pace.

"Fora's self-paced training program was a game-changer," Fora Advisor Timadge Berkhadley said, explaining that it complemented her role as a mom and her other career as well. "Juggling other commitments, I could learn at my own speed, yet the content was rich and comprehensive. This empowered me to confidently navigate my client calls, feeling well-equipped with the knowledge to succeed."

3. Stay diligent and start booking travel

As you learn the ropes, you’ll gear up to get ready to book travel for clients. Booking travel for clients is a skill that you’ll build confidence in over time. Hotels are a great start to book travel, but there are plenty of other travel experiences that you can book, from vacation packages to travel insurance. Learn more about the different types of travel suppliers you can book as an advisor .

Success rarely occurs overnight, but you get out what you put in. We’ve got plenty of resources to help you along the way.

Considerations to become an independent travel agent

Benefits of becoming an independent travel agent

One of the primary advantages is the flexibility it offers. You are running your own travel business, after all. You have the freedom to set your own work hours and location. Whether you prefer to work from the comfort of your home as a home-based travel agent or while traveling the world, you’ll have the autonomy to create a schedule that suits your lifestyle.

It’s worth noting that you can start part-time if you prefer. This flexibility allows individuals to test the waters of entrepreneurship. As your business grows and gains momentum, you can gradually transition to full-time work. It’s worth noting that not every travel agency accepts part-time agents, but at Fora, we do. There are no sales booking minimums at Fora, and you can book as much (or as little) as you want.

"I had been dreaming about a career pivot for a while but always felt stuck on how to make it happen," Fora Advisor Alexandra Vigilante Chamberlin shared. "As an avid traveler who felt trapped in the rigid schedule of a traditional healthcare worker, Fora gives me the opportunity to grow my passion for travel in to a business at my own pace while still working full-time and eventually make the leap to travel advising full time when I'm ready."

There’s also a lot of creativity in the business. Independent travel agents have the chance to build their own brand and network of loyal clients.

Next, it’s a passion-driven career. After all, you are helping others plan their dream vacations and can help with milestone moments like honeymoons. Witnessing the joy and gratitude of satisfied clients makes this career rewarding.

Finally, it’s worth noting that working as an advisor offers the chance to connect with a community of fellow travel lovers. The travel industry is filled with passionate professionals who share a love for exploration and adventure. At Fora, we’re big on community and have a ton of opportunities to connect with fellow Fora Advisors in person as well as online (we have a digital community app called Forum ).

Challenges of becoming an independent travel agent

Despite the flexibility and rewards, becoming an independent travel agent also comes with its fair share of challenges, and it’s important to factor these in as you decide whether it’s the right role for you.

There is a learning curve as you get started. Your first booking will take longer than the bookings you make later in your career (it takes both practice and confidence to build speed). You should not expect overnight success, and that’s okay! It’s a rewarding career to build over time.

It’s worth considering that there's irregular work schedules that are often unavoidable. For example, if you’re booking travel for someone over the holidays and they need support, you’ll need to step in with excellent customer service skills.

Additionally, the income of an independent travel agent can be uncertain. It is a commission-based business, and so your income can fluctuate in a way that’s different from a traditional 9-5. Learn more about how travel agents get paid .

Despite these challenges, becoming an independent travel agent can be a rewarding career.

FAQs on how to become an independent travel agent

being a travel agent in 2023

Still have questions? We’ve got you.

Is it possible to become a travel agent without an agency?

Yes, but it’s worth noting that this isn’t the traditional path that most advisors take (especially as they’re getting started). This is because a host travel agency offers infrastructure and support that is difficult and expensive to set up on your own. For example, you cannot make commissions on bookings without an IATA number (a unique identifier assigned by the International Air Transport Association to travel agencies). Working with a host agency means that you have less upfront and ongoing work around legal/infrastructure.

In addition, host agencies offer support and scale. You’re joining a network of fellow advisors who are booking under the same umbrella, so you’re more likely to get preferred partnership benefits through programs like Virtuoso , Four Seasons Preferrred , Rosewood Elite and more. We offer all of this through Fora.

"The Fora community is an invaluable resource," Fora Advisor Timadge Berkhadley said. "Whether I have a question about a destination or need a recommendation on the perfect property, my network of fellow agents is always just a reach away. Plus, Fora HQ is fantastic – they offer ongoing support and are truly invested in my success."

How much do travel agents make?

The short answer is that you get what you put in. The earning potential for independent travel agents can vary significantly. Generally, independent travel agents who specialize in luxury travel or a niche tend to earn higher incomes compared to those who focus on budget travel.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for travel agents was $44,620 in May 2020. However, it’s worth noting that it can be a lucrative career, and there are many travel advisors earning well into the six figures.

How do I get clients as an independent travel advisor?

As you start out as a new independent travel advisor, it can be daunting to try and figure out how to get your first clients and build your business. We typically recommend beginning by tapping into your personal network. Then, you’ll want to expand your network through marketing initiatives. We offer training on how to market yourself, plus templates so that you can stay active on social media. Lastly, at Fora, we have an industry-leading Client Lead Program that allows travel advisors to build their client base. Learn more about how we help you build your book of business .

What qualifications do I need to become an independent travel agent?

While formal training is technically not required to become an independent travel agent, it is highly recommended. There are several training programs available to become accredited in the industry. Many of these programs offer comprehensive training that covers everything you need to know about the travel industry, from booking flights and hotels to marketing your services. Some programs even offer certification, which can give you a competitive edge when looking for clients.

Fora offers a comprehensive travel agent training program that can help you get started in this exciting career. Upon completing our program, you will be certified as a travel agent and ready to start your own business. We will also provide you with ongoing support and resources to help you succeed.

"I love that Fora's training program meets me where I'm at – I have access to live training but also on-demand resources," Fora Advisor Alexandra Vigilante Chamberlin said. "It's amazing forging bonds with my fellow advisors as we learn and grow together but also having access to highly experienced travel advisors that I respect and admire."

How do I stand out?

Being an independent travel agent comes with its perks, and it also means you’re developing your own business. One of the best ways to stand out among the crowd is thoughtful, creative and consistent marketing.

As an independent travel agent with Fora, you'll have access to content marketing tools like email templates and social media resources to help you peacock your travel knowledge.

We’ll also help guide you in building your brand around your niche. Do you know the ins and outs of cruises? We’ll help you create gorgeous marketing emails on cruising. What does being a travel agent look like in 2023?

  • August 9, 2023
  • Pickles Travel Network

In this rapidly evolving digital age and post-COVID travel landscape, travel itself — and the role of a travel agent — has transformed significantly over the last several decades.

In the 90s and early 2000s, being a travel agent was an entirely different experience compared to the modern era.

During this period, travel agents were the primary source of travel information and bookings for most travelers. The process of booking travel involved a considerable amount of in-person interaction, with clients visiting the travel agency’s physical office to discuss their travel plans.

Travel agents relied heavily on printed brochures, catalogs, and destination guidebooks to present travel options to their clients. It was a time when travelers heavily relied on the expertise and recommendations of travel agents to make informed decisions about their trips.

In the 90s and early 2000s, technology was still in its infancy stage in the travel industry.

Travel agents used computer systems known as Global Distribution Systems (GDS) to access flight availability, fares, and hotel options. However, these systems were relatively basic compared to today’s sophisticated travel booking platforms. The Internet was not as pervasive, and online travel booking platforms were in their early stages of development.

As a result, the role of a travel agent was more hands-on, involving extensive research and phone calls to airlines, hotels, and other travel suppliers to secure the best deals and accommodations for their clients. Personalized service and building strong relationships with clients were fundamental to success in the industry during this period.

So, what does being a travel agent look like in the year 2023?

Now let’s deep dive into the modern travel agent career as it relates to the Internet, post-COVID travel, and other relevant aspects!

The travel industry has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years, and 2023 brings a host of changes that continue to redefine the role of the “new-age” travel agent. As technology and consumer preferences evolve, travel agents find themselves embracing innovative tools, adapting to post-COVID travel trends, and delivering personalized experiences that cater to the demands of the modern traveler.

Embracing Technology and the Internet

In 2023, the Internet remains a central pillar in the world of travel agents. Technology has become an indispensable tool, streamlining various aspects of the travel booking process. Travel agents now leverage cutting-edge software, AI-powered chatbots, and virtual reality to enhance the overall customer experience. These digital advancements allow agents to offer immersive virtual tours, real-time price comparisons, and personalized recommendations that cater to each traveler’s preferences.

The Internet has also facilitated seamless communication between travel agents and clients, enabling agents to respond promptly to queries, provide updates, and offer continuous support throughout the trip.

Marketing as a travel agent has also become significantly easier in 2023 compared to past decades, thanks to these rapid advancements in technology as well as the widespread adoption of digital platforms.

The evolution of marketing tools and strategies has revolutionized the way travel agents promote their services, connect with clients, and reach a more global audience.

Digital Marketing and Online Presence

In the past, travel agents heavily relied on traditional marketing methods such as print advertisements, direct mail, and word-of-mouth referrals. These approaches were often limited in reach and required substantial financial investments. However, in 2023, digital marketing has taken center stage, providing cost-effective and highly targeted advertising opportunities. Travel agents now have access to a plethora of online marketing tools, including social media platforms, search engine marketing (SEM), content marketing, and email marketing.

With a well-crafted online presence, travel agents can showcase their expertise, highlight unique travel offerings, and engage with potential clients on a global scale. This accessibility to a broader audience allows travel agents to tap into new markets and attract clients from various geographic locations, creating opportunities for both business growth and expansion.

Data-Driven Marketing Strategies

The emergence of big data and advanced analytics has revolutionized marketing strategies for travel agents in 2023. Unlike the past decades, when marketing decisions were often based on intuition and anecdotal evidence, today’s travel agents can harness data to understand consumer behavior, preferences, and booking patterns. With access to valuable insights, agents can create personalized marketing campaigns that resonate with their target audience.

Through data-driven strategies, travel agents can optimize their marketing efforts, allocate resources more effectively, and measure the success of their campaigns with greater accuracy. This analytical approach enables travel agents to make informed decisions, maximize their return on investment (ROI), and continually refine their marketing tactics for better results.

Social Media and Influencer Marketing

Social media has become a powerful marketing tool for travel agents in 2023, providing a direct and engaging way to connect with potential clients. Travel agents can leverage platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to share captivating travel content, showcase client testimonials, and post real-time updates on promotions and offers. Additionally, influencer marketing has gained prominence, where travel agents can collaborate with influencers and bloggers to promote their services to a broader audience.

By partnering with influencers who have a significant following and influence in the travel niche, travel agents can tap into even more new audiences and enhance their brand visibility. This form of marketing was virtually non-existent in past decades, and the increasing rise of social media has opened up exciting avenues for travel agents to showcase their expertise and captivate potential clients in a visually appealing and highly interactive manner.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound and unprecedented impact on the travel agent industry.

As countries worldwide implemented travel restrictions, border closures, and lockdown measures to contain the spread of the virus, the travel industry of 2020 came to a virtual standstill. Travel agents faced an unprecedented wave of cancellations, postponements, and uncertainty as travelers hesitated to make new bookings. The sudden halt in travel activity led to significant revenue losses for travel agencies, with many facing financial challenges and struggling to stay afloat.

The pandemic also necessitated a shift in the role of travel agents, who found themselves taking on new responsibilities as crisis managers, providing up-to-date information on travel restrictions, safety protocols, and rebooking options to clients. Despite the challenges, travel agents showcased their resilience and adaptability, quickly embracing digital tools and virtual platforms to continue assisting their clients remotely.

As vaccination rates increased and travel restrictions eased, the travel agent industry gradually began to rebound, albeit with a renewed emphasis on health and safety considerations. The pandemic’s effects served as a stark reminder of the industry’s vulnerability to unforeseen events, spurring travel agents to prioritize flexibility, empathy, and sustainable business practices to thrive in the post-COVID era.

Adapting to Post-COVID Travel Realities

As the world continues to adapt to the new normal, travel agents play a vital role in navigating post-COVID travel realities. Health and safety considerations have become paramount, and travelers seek the expertise of knowledgeable agents to guide them through complex travel regulations and protocols.

Travel agents, in 2023 , must prioritize destinations with robust health measures and flexible cancellation policies to instill confidence in their clients. Additionally, agents need to stay informed about vaccination requirements and evolving travel restrictions, ensuring a smooth and secure travel experience for their clients.

Personalization and Customization

In the era of hyper-personalization, modern travel agents focus on crafting tailored experiences that cater to the unique preferences and needs of their clients. Rather than offering one-size-fits-all packages, agents in 2023 take the time to understand their clients’ interests, travel goals, and budgets.

Armed with this knowledge, they curate personalized itineraries that include off-the-beaten-path excursions, authentic local experiences, and accommodations that resonate with each traveler’s unique style. By prioritizing personalization, travel agents deliver unforgettable journeys that create one-of-a-kind, lasting memories for their clients.

Sustainable and Responsible Tourism

In 2023, sustainability and responsible tourism have become integral components of the modern travel agent’s ethos. Travelers are increasingly conscious of their environmental impact, seeking eco-friendly options that align with their values.

Travel agents can collaborate with eco-conscious suppliers, promote sustainable practices, and advocate for responsible tourism to protect the world’s natural and cultural treasures. By embracing sustainability, travel agents play a pivotal role in preserving the planet for future generations while offering travelers transformative and ethical experiences.

The Human Touch: A Timeless Value

Despite the rise of technology and digital platforms, the human touch remains a timeless value in the travel agent industry. In 2023, travel agents continue to build meaningful relationships with their clients, offering personalized attention and expert guidance that online platforms cannot replicate. The human touch extends to understanding clients’ emotional needs, addressing their concerns, and going the extra mile to ensure every trip is an enriching and stress-free experience.

And, sending hand-written “thank you” cards post-trips can be the icing on the cake! This type of genuine connection fosters trust and loyalty, turning clients into repeat customers and advocates for the travel agent’s services.

Being a travel agent in 2023 entails embracing technology, adapting to post-COVID travel realities, prioritizing personalization and sustainability, and upholding the timeless value of the human touch.

As the travel industry continues to evolve, travel agents play an indispensable role in navigating the complexities of modern travel, curating unforgettable experiences, and providing unparalleled expertise and support to their clients. The future of travel agents is bright as they continue to shape the way people explore the world and create cherished memories that last a lifetime.

What do travel agents do?

A travel agent's job is to ensure their clients have the best travel arrangements. Using their expertise, they offer advice and essential details about your trip, make your reservations, book flights and hotels, and manage your travel plans overall. Any hiccups regarding your accommodations are handled by them, and they are the best at finding money-saving deals. Travel agents prioritize your needs, like your vacation schedule and budget.

Their goal is to provide peace of mind throughout the trip-planning process so you can get the most out of your vacation.

What credentials do you need to be a travel agent?

You don't necessarily need a degree to become a travel agent, but getting some training within the field could be in your best interest. This not only makes you an attractive candidate to employers and agencies who may require a form of certification , but also helps you appear more qualified, which can help further your career in the long run.

Even though there might not be a degree in "travel agency" per se, you can opt for a related program like business, economics, or hospitality instead.

What do you need to become a travel agent?

There are different ways to become a travel agent, but anyone hoping to break into the field should definitely keep the following three points in mind.

Decide what kind of travel agent you want to be.

Having a specific focus on the kind of travel experience you want to provide allows you to build the knowledge and resources to best help those specific clients. Suppose you want to work in corporate travel: Building your skills according to your niche clientele and field will help you sharpen the skills you need to develop your expertise.

Learn about the travel industry and its trends.

The travel agency field is constantly shifting, so it's important to stay up-to-date on industry changes and trends to know what you should be offering clients. People's preferences are ever-changing, so knowing what's hot and what's not is crucial. Spend time learning which places are popular and unpopular based on the season, or which restaurants are staple visits. This shows a solid and up-to-date understanding your clients will appreciate.

Build your communication and interpersonal skills.

A large part of being a travel agent is advising your clients and earning their trust, which doesn't happen overnight. Presenting yourself as knowledgeable and approachable can encourage them to trust your judgment and recommendations. This is especially important if you're not working with a travel agency, because you'll have to rely more on your brand and relationships instead of leaning on a company's reputation.

Maintaining a healthy balance of communication between you and your clients is also essential, which means scheduling phone calls, in-person meetings, keeping up with emails, and any other form of communication your client prefers.

Get certified if you can

Getting a certificate can be pricey and cost hundreds of dollars . So, if this option is not feasible for you, that's understandable. However, while certification isn't a requirement to become a travel agent, it can certainly help you throughout your career. Here are a few certificate programs to consider.

Certified Travel Counselor

This Travel Institute certificate requires at least five years of experience and a Certified Travel Association certification. This course focuses on marketing and building consumer relationships. CTC costs $550 to complete the course and $600 for the CTC Fast Track.

Certified Travel Industry Executive

CTIE is also backed by the Travel Institute and requires at least five years of field experience. This $550 program includes courses on travel business, marketing management, bookkeeping, and travel law.

ASTA Verified Travel Advisor

This certificate is given by the American Society of Travel Advisors and teaches applicants about the legalities of travel and how to solidify relationships with consumers. The nine-course program also focuses on ethical travel advising, agency law, and travel agency compliance.

For ASTA members, the course is $399, and for nonmember independent contractors, it's $598. Travel Advisor nonmembers pay the steepest price, which is $729, and $179 for recertification.

How much do travel agents make?

According to Indeed , travel agents make an average of $53,924, and salaries can range between $30,131 and $96,506, depending on where you live. But other factors can affect an agent's earning potential, like working independently instead of for a travel agency.

A travel agent's income also depends on their area of travel. The Hotel Agency Review 2023 report revealed that corporate and luxury travel agents earn much more than agents who focus on Disney and cruise trips.

Your experience level can also impact your earning potential, as agents who have worked in the field longer are typically viewed as more qualified.

Do travel agents get discounts on flights?

Being a travel agent doesn't automatically mean you get tons of discounts and deals, but they do have access to perks that can help make planning trips easier and less expensive. Travel agents have the inside scoop on reduced rates because of their relationships with hotels and airlines. As a result, agents share these negotiated prices with their clients to help them save. Agents can, of course, also benefit from this insider knowledge and save money on their own trips.

Thanks to their agents, clients can enjoy luxury accommodations at high-end hotels like Hyatt PrivĂŠ, Hilton Impresario, Marriott STARS&Luminous, Four Seasons Preferred Partner, and Mandarin Oriental Fan Club, to name a few. These perks range from spa services and later checkout times to room upgrades and complimentary breakfast.

How do you make money as a travel agent?

There are several ways a travel agent can make money in their field beyond selling travel packages or working for an agency.

Travel agents can charge a service fee, which is a base pay clients cover along with any other charges.

Travel agents can also make commissions from their contracts with hotels, tour/excursion companies, cruises, car rental services, and airlines. Add-ons like insurance can also help boost an agent's income, if their client wants it.

Booking group tours can increase a travel agent's earnings because their commission is based on how much their clients purchase, so more people means more accommodations. For example, booking travel for destination weddings or family reunions is an excellent way to book multiple hotel rooms. It's such a lucrative strategy that some agents make group booking their niche, because managing just a few a year can bring in a substantial profit.

Everything You Need to Know About Becoming a Travel Agent

Here's what you should know before becoming a travel agent.

being a travel agent in 2023

If you're someone who spends your days scanning flights , loves hotel rewards points, and in general, is a fervent traveler, you've probably wondered how to become a travel agent.

And, while it's true that living in the age of Expedia means travel agents are not as vital as they once were, people use them a lot more than you might think. Just because travelers aren't calling up an agent every time they need to book a quick flight doesn't mean they don't want to consult an expert for a big trip. This holds especially true when it comes to honeymoons or experiential trips that have a lot of moving parts — coordinating tour companies , translators, or multiple resort stays, for example. It's often easier to leave the logistics to someone else: travel agents.

You don't need a specific employment background to become a travel agent, so if you're looking for a fresh career start, that's totally OK. You have to start somewhere on your path to becoming a travel agent, and the sooner you jump in, the sooner you'll build your client base. On the other hand, if you're hoping to parlay your experience in a semi-related industry, be it marketing or hospitality, that can help because you'll have even more context for your new gig. Either way, this can be a rewarding career path (with some fun perks), so here's what you need to know to become a travel agent.

Formal Training Needed to Become a Travel Agent

While some four-year colleges, community colleges, and trade schools offer tourism certifications, it is not a requirement for those trying to become travel agents. Certificates of tourism can be very helpful, but so can previous training in marketing, hospitality, or even event planning. Ultimately, your knowledge of destinations, sales, itinerary planning, and booking software will be crucial for your career as a travel agent.

In terms of the training time you need to put in before becoming a fully-fledged travel agent, it depends. You could start your career right after high school, or you could put in one to four years to earn a certificate, associate's, or bachelor's degree in tourism. Of course, you could also change course from a related job, and morph your experience as, say, a destination wedding planner into a career as a travel agent.

Training Programs Available

You could take classes with a company like The Travel Institute to earn your certification. Not only will they teach you the basics of planning itineraries, but they'll also make sure you're learning about new cultures, world geography, and experiences you can have all over the world. They'll also help you decide what business route you want to take.

How to Become a Travel Agent: The Logistics

Becoming a travel agent will likely mean starting your own business . On the plus side, it requires relatively little overhead. If you're becoming a small business owner by opening a yoga studio, for example, you will need to rent a space, deal with permits, buy supplies, build a website, and pay yoga teachers and someone to work the front desk. However, if you're starting a travel agent business, you can operate from your living room and there aren't nearly as many upfront costs.

You will have to think about what type of business you want to become. Do you want to incorporate or become an LLC? Would you rather be a sole proprietor? Incorporating takes the most effort, and is often the most expensive. Becoming an LLC is a good happy medium because it can help protect you as a business entity without having as many associated costs. Small business owners typically become an LLC to protect their personal assets. If you get sued as an LLC, someone can come after your business holdings, but can't come after your house, car, or personal savings.

If you choose to remain a sole proprietor (which doesn't require any fees or legwork), you are essentially a freelancer or independent contractor. You can be an LLC and an independent contractor, too — they aren't mutually exclusive. If you want to be an independent contractor, it likely means you're working as part of a larger host agency, which is smart to do when you're starting out as a travel agent. Down the road, you can also own a travel agency franchise. Owning a franchise might come with more overhead costs, and that would be a reason to incorporate.

If you're an independent contractor, you should know that your taxes aren't going to be as straightforward as a full-time employee's might be. You may have to start keeping track of your business expenses, as you might be able to write them off. You also might not get things like health benefits from your employer. As you plan your new career, consider sitting down with an established travel agent to ask them some logistical questions: Where do they get their health insurance? How do they keep track of their income and expenses? Do they use an accountant to do their taxes? While meeting with the travel agent, you can discuss the pros and cons of working for a larger agency, too. If you're not sure how to get in touch with other travel agents, consider using social media, like LinkedIn or even Instagram.

What to Think About When You Become a Travel Agent

Once you've secured work as a travel agent, you'll want to think about how you can earn more money and distinguish yourself from other agents. Here are three things to consider as you start your career.

Making Commissions: If you're working for a larger travel agency as an independent contractor, how do commissions work? Make sure you have this conversation early on before accepting the position. When you're starting out, you want to make sure the commission rate you're receiving is similar to the industry standard.

Growing Your Client Base: How do you make more money as a travel agent? Clients, clients, clients. You want happy customers who will return to you every time they want to book a travel experience. You'll want to keep your clients happy by finding them great deals, curating unbelievable experiences for them, and simply being great to work with.

Establishing a Niche: This is by no means a requirement for becoming a travel agent, but as you establish your career, you may want to consider focusing on a specific niche. For example, perhaps you're someone who focuses on honeymoon travel , luxury travel, or adventure travel . Your niche can help you attract clients, and it can be anything in the travel realm, as long as there's a need for it.

How LuxRally Travel Compares to Other Host Agencies

being a travel agent in 2023

  • Do I need experience to become a luxury travel advisor with LuxRally Travel? No, we do not hire prior travel agents. Our methods and philosophies are often opposite to that of traditional travel agencies. For example, we do not believe in charging service fees, and this is something experienced agents cannot wrap their heads around. Additionally, while we enjoy free travel occasionally, we do not believe in FAM culture. FAMs are free group trips for travel agents and often create a conflict of interest between the agents and their clients. Traditional travel agents may send people to a location in exchange for a FAM trip. We find this practice repulsive. The average travel agent makes $46,000 a year; LuxRally Travel agents make multiples of that, hitting six and even seven figures. The LuxRally system is best for beginners as it takes more energy for us to fix existing agents than to make new ones.
  • Who is a good fit for the LuxRally Travel team? We want general hustlers here to make money and who know how to sell. We want you if you have no sales experience but can prove to us that you are a natural-born hustler. Those with prior sales experience, mortgage brokers, car dealers, jewelers, IT salespeople, concierges, hotel sales managers, medical, pharma, top producing real estate agents, timeshare salespeople, etc., tend to be better at not only understanding the value of their networks but also understand how to advocate for their clients when interacting with vendors. We also look for individuals with large networks that deal primarily with the upper middle class and wealthy and those with a passion for all things travel, especially luxury travel and luxury dining.
  • How much does LuxRally Travel's Agent Training cost? Zero. Free. No hidden fees, no catch.
  • How long does LuxRally's travel agent training take? The training can be broken down into three portions: A Self-Guided Course on Teachable: 20-50 hours (varies by the speed of the individual). This should take you 2-4 weeks. A Launch Meeting on Microsoft Teams: 1-2 hours (scheduled weekly) You Will Have a One Week Period to Prepare for Your Practical Exam A Practical Exam / Final Assessment on Microsoft Teams: 3-4 hours (scheduled weekly) You have four weeks to complete the Teachable portion of your training. If you do not complete the training within four weeks of your enrollment (note: enrollment occurs after your contract is signed/counter-signed), you will be removed from the program. You have three attempts to pass your practical exam. If you fail on your first attempt, you may retake it the following week. You can expect to become an agent within 3-6 weeks, depending on how quickly you complete the teachable and whether you pass your final assessment on the first attempt.
  • Do I need anything specific to become a travel agent? From a practical standpoint, you will need a solid computer (preferably with multiple screens), a smartphone, and a current job that allows you to interrupt your day to handle issues for traveling clients. This is a 24/7/365 career. While you will not be working all of the time, clients need to be able to reach you if they experience an emergency while on a trip.
  • What's in the Free Online LuxRally Travel Agent Training Curriculum? Our self-directed curriculum includes but is not limited to: What is a Travel Agent? Tenets of Sales How to use a Consortium Hotel Benefits Programs Introduction to Vendors How to Use GDS How to Make Leisure Bookings How to Make Group Bookings Travel Agent Rewards Programs Everything You Need to Know About Planning and Booking Cruises How to Use the LuxRally Concierge Ancillary Services (Car Services, Tours, Event Tickets, and More) Travel Agent Accounting and Finance The curriculum ends with a concluding assessment, and opportunities for continued learning are offered post-graduation.
  • What is the difference between a travel agent and a travel advisor? There is no real difference; however, travel advisor is often the preferred term for those in the luxury sector.
  • Do I need to get my own leads? The short answer is that you will be responsible for getting your own leads and must cultivate a stable source of clients to earn six or seven figures as a Luxury Travel Agent. That being said, we do have a leads program relaunching in Q2 2024. To participate in the leads program, you must complete an additional sales training module administered by our VP of Sales and maintain solid closing rates. The leads and additional training are offered to our agents at no cost. However, commissions made off of LuxRally supplied leads fall under a different commission split.
  • Do I need to make my own travel brand to be successful? No, it is not a requirement for success. You can use the LuxRally Travel brand to market yourself as an agent. After graduation from our training program and completion of our orientation, you will receive the following: An @LuxRallyTravel.com Email A Landing Page (Agent Profile) on Our Website Access to Branded Templates for Business Cards, Flyers, and Other Promotional Materials Additionally, once you are officially a LuxRally Travel Agent, you will have access to our marketing team to help you create promotional branded materials. Sponsoring an event and need signage? Need help with a social media post? Our team has your back. Now, creating a brand might make sense if you plan on getting leads through SEO or paid ads that require landing pages. However, for most people, creating an independent travel brand is not necessary. Your name will be the brand you will want to focus on. When someone thinks about you i.e., "David Eisen", you want them to automatically think about travel. After completing our training, if you are still determining which path is right for you, we suggest scheduling a one-on-one session with our CMO to evaluate what would be most beneficial to growing a healthy client base. Some agents use social media and personal networks, while others use branded websites and more traditional marketing tactics. It all depends on your situation, networks and background. A simple example would be if your background is in digital marketing. If you have experience in SEO, we would never discourage you from having your own site. We don't make money until you do, so we always provide feedback based on what we think will be practical for ramping up your business. Whatever you choose to do, know that we support both approaches and will provide candid feedback after learning more about your goals.
  • What can I earn commission on? Hotel Stays (including groups) Cruises Flights (select flights, not all flights pay commission, you will learn about this in our agent training) Tours Car Service Travel Insurance Rental Cars Private Villas Private Jets Luxury Trains
  • How do I get Paid? We offer a commission split based on your received commissions from your client's bookings. It is one of the best commission splits in the industry, starting at 80%/20% in your favor, meaning you keep 80% of what you make. After your first $100,000 in commissions, your split increases to 90%/10%, meaning you keep 90% of what you make. The commission resets each year back to 80%. The most productive LuxRally travel advisors can make over one million dollars in annual commissions.
  • Will I be a fully licensed travel agent after completing the LuxRally Travel Agent Training Program? Yes, after completing our training and orientation, you will be fully licensed under our host agency with all IATA and Seller of Travel licenses required.
  • What is the LuxRally Travel Agent Portal? Our agent portal shaves hundreds of hours a year off of booking trips, managing clients, collecting commissions, and more. We invite you to take advantage of the most advanced agent portal on the market. Our portal is built in-house from the ground up, with no reskinning of third parties, allowing our platform to be perfectly seamless. One Portal to Rule Them All Our comprehensive portal is the one-stop shop for creating clients, making bookings, overseeing your accounting, and more. Instead of getting lost across dozens of systems, our agent portal centralizes all the essential tools you need to be a successful travel agent. These Features include: A Dashboard with Key Statistics About Your Performance, Top Clients, and Top Vendors A Booking Dashboard Where You Can Quickly Make Bookings Directly in the Portal (Launching Q2 2024) Quick Invoicing to Efficiently Complete All Accounting Work Associated With Your Booking Agent Analytics to Take a Deeper Dive Into Your Performance Over Time A CRM to Manage All of Your Client Information in One Place An Accounting Portal to Manage Invoices and commissions and Begin Collections From Vendors For Unpaid Commissions Direct Access to the LuxRally Travel Knowledge Base to Quickly Find Educational Resources Direct Access to Our "Schedule a 1:1" Feature to Easily Get in Touch With LuxRally Travel Staff When Your Need In-Depth Support in Sales or Marketing You could be up and running as a travel agent by mastering this single portal. Our free agent training program will, of course, teach you about all of the tools available to travel agents. However, you can use our convenient and efficient portal to expedite your career in the travel industry. AI and Automation to Speed Up Your Processes If you are new to this industry, you are likely unaware of the tedious work that traditional host agencies require of their agents. Many small tasks eat away at your time, from matching commissions to sending collections notices. We want our agents to make money, not hone in on their skills as administrative clerks, so we have found ways to expedite processes for our team. #1 Managing Your Client Information Create, store, and organize clients in our agent portal with valuable features like credit card authorization automation. Instead of creating a client and then using a third party like CeloPay to collect credit card information, our process allows you to check a box to request the information directly from the client without leaving our portal. Our system will automatically email the client with a link to a secure form where they can safely submit their credit card information. This information will then be securely stored and tied to their account. #2 Getting Paid Faster Quick invoicing, commission matching, and automated collections emails are just a few tools we've developed to help you get paid fast. Instead of manually sifting through unmatched commission reports, sometimes sent out as complicated PDFs by host agencies, we match all received commissions for our agents. Our commission matching process saves our agents 2-4 hours each month. Sometimes, vendors need to be prompted to pay commissions. Unpaid commissions are usually due to some disorganization on the vendor's end. Collecting unpaid commissions from travel vendors is the agent's responsibility. Our system expedites this process with just a few clicks. Find the past due commission and trigger the automated email series to deliver collection notices. These emails will automatically include required documentation, such as the W9 and invoice, and personalize the content to reflect your information and appropriately address the vendor. The most significant innovation in these automated collections emails is that vendors can pay their past-due commissions directly through a payment link embedded in the email. #3 Real-Time Stats to Track Your Progress Our system offers agent analytics that visually displays critical stats. Most agents must work with clunky reporting systems or even manual reports derived from massive Excel files. Our dashboard gives you a quick overview of your stats compared to the previous thirty days, and our agent analytics section offers agents an even more granular view of their performance. Quick Stats Include: Commissions Revenue Number of Bookings Total Active Clients Average Number of Nights Per Booking Average Nightly Rate Total Number of Nights Sold Yield And Much More! #4 Chat GPT Infused Text Editors All of the text editors in our portal, including manual client communication options, have Chat GPT built right in. Need to send an email out quickly? Utilize AI to help you with the first draft without ever leaving the portal. This functionality will be expanded further for an even more seamless experience between agents, clients, and AI. As AI begins to infuse itself into the travel industry, we know that being on the bleeding edge of tech is necessary to survive industry-shaping innovations. We intend not only to survive but thrive and disrupt. Quick Innovation Our development is in-house, meaning we can quickly respond to agent feedback and nimbly optimize our portal further. We are not a start-up with a tedious board and investors weighing in on our every move. We are self-funded and fast at making decisions. If an agent has an idea that could benefit the entire company, we value this feedback and act with a sense of urgency. Many groundbreaking features are on the roadmap and will be launched over the next six months. We are confident we will be the de facto top host agency for tech-infused solutions.
  • What happens after training is over? After training, you become a fully licensed travel agent, ready to sell. We provide access to a superabundance of resources to ensure that all new agents feel welcomed and confident. The LuxRally Group Chat: Our group chat is a go-to for most agents seeking hotel recommendations, assistance with booking tools and third parties, advice on utilizing benefits programs, and general guidance for anything that may come up. LuxRally Agents sign agreements stating they cannot poach each other's clients, allowing our agents to confidently ask for assistance without fear of giving up a promising lead. Continued Mentorship: One-on-One sessions with our VP of Sales and trainers are always available to our agents. Whether you need a refresher on using a booking tool or lead generation advice, you will have access to a solid mentor. Bi-Weekly Ask Me Anything (AMA) Sessions with David Eisen: David Eisen is not only the founder of LuxRally Travel but is believed to be the highest-grossing single travel agent in the world. Our agents can casually ask David anything travel related on bi-weekly video calls. Weekly Vendor Chats: Each week, a vendor is invited to a companywide weekly video conference to present educational materials and lead a Q&A. From General Managers of Forbes Five-Star hotels to Mega Yacht experts, our agents have access to continued education directly from industry professionals.
  • What if I fail? Follow our training, and, likely, you won't. However, in the rare case you do, you will owe us nothing. Before parting ways, we will remove you from our website, group chats, and other internal resources. While a tiny percentage of our agents who complete training drop out of the program, we understand that selling travel is not for everyone.
  • Why should I choose LuxRally Travel as my host agency? We can confidently say we offer more to our agents than any other host agency with the following: Free, Comprehensive Travel Agent Training We Cover Licensing and Insurance for Our Agents We Do Not Charge Our Agents Any Subscription or Membership Fees to be a Part of Our Host Agency Weekly Group Classes One-on-One Sessions Available to All Agents, Even After Training, With Sales and Marketing Teams Competitive Commission Splits (80%/20% vs. 70%/30%), Meaning You Make More Money The Most Advanced Agent Portal on the Market Mentorship From the Highest-grossing Travel Agent in the World Modern Best Practices That Generate Revenue and Maximize Client Satisfaction A Culture of Camaraderie An In-House Team Negotiating Deals for our Agency Directly With Vendors A Comprehensive Knowledge Base Annual Sales Symposiums for In-Person Training and Networking Most importantly, we only make money once you do. We are vested in your success and will do everything possible to give you the best shot in this industry. These are just a few reasons why starting your career as a travel agent with LuxRally Travel is the best move. Lastly, we do not hire people who are already agents, so you will miss out if you ramp up with another host. Our methods are directly opposed to the fee-saturated "best practices" of archaic host agencies, and we've found it takes an immense amount of energy to break the bad habits of existing agents. So, what are you waiting for? Apply to our free travel agent training program today and start your career as a travel agent with the world's most innovative host travel agency.
  • What are the requirements to remain an agent with LuxRally Travel? To maintain your status as an agent with LuxRally Travel, you must meet the following requirements throughout the duration of your time with us: Email Communication: Agents must regularly log into their LuxRally Travel email address. If they have not logged in within 30 days or use an alternate email address for communications, this could affect their standing. Sales Performance: Agents must make at least one sale every 90 days. This can be any sale as long as it is not personal travel (booked by the agent for their own travel). Availability: It's important that agents have ample availability for clients. Limited availability may impact their ability to serve clients effectively. Equipment: Agents need access to a reliable computer to run their travel business. Without this, they may struggle to manage their work efficiently. Community Participation: Being part of the official LuxRally Travel Agent Facebook chat(s) or group(s) is a requirement. This helps agents stay connected and updated with the latest information. These are private channels for agency-related information and support. Revenue Generation: Our agents must sell $30,000 in revenue per year. By meeting these requirements, agents can ensure they maintain their status with LuxRally Travel. Agents who do not meet these requirements are cut from our agency. If you have additional questions regarding this list of requirements, we encourage you to ask them during your interview after applying to our program.
  • Ready for the next steps? After apply for our training program, you will receive an email with our welcome kit and a link to schedule your interview or a denial from our program within 24 hours of submitting your application. The purpose of this call is to become acquainted with one another and ensure that LuxRally, as a host agency, and you, as the agent, will be a good fit. After the fifteen-minute call, if both parties decide to move forward, you will be given access to an online curriculum with deep dives into everything from booking tools to sales strategies, quizzes, and other resources. Training takes 3-6 weeks on average.

How to Start a Travel Agency From Home

Protect Your Trip Âť

Is a travel agent worth it the pros and cons.

Travel experts agree there are several advantages to hiring a vacation planner.

The Pros & Cons of Using a Travel Agent

A travel agent can save you money and time.

Need to pivot your trip plans but don't want to deal with the extra time, money and hassle of rebooking flights and accommodations on your own? That's just one area where a knowledgeable travel agent (also commonly known as a travel advisor) can help. Read on to discover the other benefits – as well as the downsides – of using a travel agent, so you can confidently decide whether or not a travel agent is worth it for your next trip.

The Pros of Using a Travel Agent

Travel agents can save you money – and get you other perks.

"In some cases, you'll actually get a better  deal by working with a travel agent," says Jackie Steele, travel expert at MagicGuides . "This could be in the form of a cruise onboard credit (free spending money to use on the ship), access to special agency/group rates, or even just learning about a discount you qualify for but weren't aware of." The best agents will even keep an eye on new discounts as they're announced and apply them to your trip even after you've booked, he notes.

Travel agents handle all the details

Hotel room? Booked. Dinner reservations? Made. Tour tickets? Ready to go. A travel agent handles every detail of your vacation itinerary. "The traveler still gets to be involved in the fun part of dreaming up ideas and providing their travel wishes, while we take and perfect them," says Jessica Parker, founder of Trip Whisperer .

Molly McShea, owner and travel advisor at McShea Travel , points out that travel agents can also help with timing logistics. "Travel agents know how many days should be spent in each destination, which tours go together, and how many things you should do in a day," she says, adding that crafting an itinerary can be challenging if it's not something you regularly do. Additionally, travel agents can help you choose the best time to visit your preferred destination(s) based on seasonality and your budget, and sift through travel insurance policies to find the best option for your needs.

Travel agents can provide local expertise

"A travel advisor's industry connections and relationships provide added value to their clients," says Valerie Edman, a luxury travel advisor and agency owner at Cultured Travel LLC. She says when working with a travel agent, travelers gain access to a global network of connections including:

  • In-destination specialists who work exclusively with travel advisors and can connect travelers with unique, off-the-beaten-path experiences they wouldn't otherwise know about
  • Exclusive experiences not available to the general public

You'll avoid surprise fees

When deciding if a travel agent is worth it for you, remember this: A reputable agent can guarantee you won't encounter any surprise fees on accommodations and activities once your trip is booked.

You'll have someone to troubleshoot unexpected travel issues

A travel advisor is essentially your personal vacation concierge. "Because they've been around for so long, agents really know what to look for," says Christopher Elliott , a consumer advocate and journalist. "Travel agents are among the first to know about flight cancellations and delays , making it easy for them to rebook itineraries right away."

The Cons of Using a Travel Agent

It might not be your cheapest option.

There are some instances when it makes more sense to plan your own trip. "If you're planning a quick flight from New York City to Los Angeles, it's easy enough to book it yourself online directly or through a third-party booking site," says Elliott. "If you're planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip or bucket list honeymoon , that's when you call the experts."

You'll have less flexibility in your itinerary

The upside of working with a travel agent is having someone plan an epic vacation for you based on industry knowledge and local expertise. But this can also be a downside in the event you discover an activity you'd like to do or a restaurant you'd like to try that isn't on your pre-planned itinerary. If you alter your plans, you risk losing money; plus, the time it takes for you and your travel agent to coordinate your change of plans may not be worth the hassle.

You still have to do some research

It's important to find an agent you can trust, which means you still have to do some of the vacation planning. For this part, Parker recommends picking up the phone. "Lots of people avoid or don't pick up the phone as much anymore," she says. "That's where you get the high-touch service, tone of voice, excitement or concerns to manage." She advises to look for the following red flags:

  • No fees: " Travel advisors are charging planning fees more now or increasing them, so the client knows more confidently than ever, we work for them, not the suppliers with the best commissions," Parker explains. "There are a lot of things that are non-commissionable and the advisor's time and expertise shouldn't be given away for free, either. That's the best way to show an advisor takes their business seriously."
  • Limited options: If you work with someone who is inexperienced or has an incentive to book you with a certain supplier, they may not be prioritizing your best interests. "It's important to check if they are with a larger consortia, accreditations and network, typically listed on their website and signatures," says Parker. "That level of mindshare doesn't come with a lone advisor unless they have many, many years of experience."
  • Slow response times: If communication is delayed, that's a sign they may be too busy to plan your trip – but again, this is something you can avoid by having the right conversations early on.

Edman suggestes starting your search with the American Society of Travel Advisors . "ASTA-verified travel advisors are committed to the highest industry standards and have verifiable industry knowledge so consumers can feel confident in working with them," she says.

July holds the most records with four dates appearing on tsa’s list of the top highest volume days. a recently released aaa survey found more americans plan to take a vacation over the summer than during any other season. popular destinations are beaches, major cities and national parks..

International summer travel expected to be on the rise this year

International summer travel is filling up as we are entering one of the busiest summer seasons we have seen. With an increase in travel overseas, travel reporter Francesca Page discusses whether travelers are splurging now that they don't have to put their trips on hold.

A record 4.7 billion people are expected to travel around the world in 2024, but many of the busiest days will likely fall outside of what is considered the winter holiday travel season.

According to data from the Transportation Security Administration , six of the ten busiest all-time travel days occurred in 2023 as Americans returned to the skies after canceling vacations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

July holds the most records with four dates appearing on TSA’s list of the top highest volume days, but the Sunday after Thanksgiving in 2023 firmly holds the number one slot for being the busiest travel day in the country’s aviation history – some 2.9 million customers passed through checkpoints in more than 400 airports around the country on Nov. 26.

Recently, the TSA announced that its agents screened about 2.79 individuals on March 28, making it the first date of 2024 to make the list of the top ten highest volume days.

The agency attributed the high passenger count to spring break being in full swing, which was accompanied by some beautiful weather from coast to coast.

A recently released AAA survey found more Americans plan to take a vacation over the summer than during any other season.

Popular destinations include beaches, major cities, and national parks, with guided tours and river cruises ranking near the bottom of the list of destinations.

Just under half of polled auto club members plan to take at least one commercial flight.

Potential travelers are most concerned about inflation, severe storms, overcrowding, health and summer heat, which could disrupt plans.

For some of these reasons, the U.S. Travel Association suggests that domestic travel may have already peaked in its rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic, while significant growth is still anticipated in international travel.

WHAT ARE THE WORST AIRPORTS TO FLY INTO DURING WINTER?

The TSA recommends all domestic passengers arrive at the airport at least two hours before departure and three hours prior to any international flight.

The agency recently announced the expansion of its PreCheck program , which allows select fliers to use its expedited screening process at more than 200 airports.

According to the TSA, 99% of passengers enrolled in the PreCheck program wait less than 10 minutes at airport checkpoints.

Photo of hamas terrorists parading shani louk’s body wins top award, sparking outrage.

A sickening image of Hamas terrorists parading a slain woman’s nearly naked body through the streets of Gaza has been awarded a prestigious photo-of-the-year prize — sparking fierce outrage from those who slammed the win as “an outrageous desecration of Jewish life.”

The grim photo featuring Shani Louk’s body was among a collection of 20 images that helped the Associated Press secure first place in one of the Pictures of the Year International award categories earlier this month.

The awards, which are run by the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism, are self-described as the world’s oldest photojournalism competition.

News of the AP’s win in the “Team Picture Story of the Year” category prompted widespread backlash on social media, with some slamming the accolade and the use of Louk’s image as an “outrageous desecration of Jewish life.”

Shani Louk

“I am DISGUSTED, SHOCKED and ENRAGED that this @AP image of a murdered Shani Louk from October 7th was given picture of the year,” one social media user posted on X. “This is the value of Israeli women to you?”

“This is just wrong and sick,” another user raged of the award.

Louk, a 23-year-old German Israeli tattoo artist, was among the scores of innocent music festival-goers taken hostage when Hamas terrorists carried out their deadly Oct. 7 onslaught.

She quickly became one of the faces of the war after the shocking images of her lifeless body in the back of a pickup truck started going viral.

An Instagram post announcing the win

Israeli authorities later confirmed the young woman had been beheaded by her captors.

In announcing the AP’s win, the award organizers posted the unblurred image of Louk’s lifeless body on its Instagram page.

The photo, though, appears to have been deleted in the wake of the backlash.

As the outrage over the AP’s award win mounted on social media, some users argued that the competition was dishonoring Louk’s memory by dredging up the photo.

“The family of Oct 7 victim Shani Louk want her to be remembered alive & smiling. One of the world’s biggest photojournalism prizes, ran by @RJI, trampled on their wishes, awarding an @AP photo of her mutilated body,” one user wrote on X.

The slain woman quickly became one of the faces of the war after the shocking images of her lifeless body on the back of pickup truck started going viral.

Another tweeted: “This is how we choose to remember the beautiful Shani Louk. We will not allow her memory to be trampled by the inhuman thugs celebrating the AP photo of her tragic murder.”

Meanwhile, many took aim at Ali Mahmud, the freelance photojournalist who snapped the image, arguing he shouldn’t be celebrated over such a tragedy.

Several Israeli American and American Nova survivors sued the AP last month for using freelance photojournalists believed to be “longstanding Hamas affiliates and full participants in the terrorist attack.”

They are suing for damages under the Antiterrorism Act, according to the federal complaint filed in the Southern District of Florida.

“He is being celebrated for taking this photo of murder-rapist-terrorists with the brutalized and contorted body of Shani Louk,” one X user noted.

Pictures of the Year International organizers told The Post the selection of photos in the category expressed “the greater emotions related to the ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza.”

“This year and every year, the photos in the competition are selected by a panel of professional journalists tasked with identifying compelling representations of the significant news events of the year,” POY director, Lynden Steele, said in a statement.

“While we understand the reactions to the pictures, we also believe that photojournalism plays an important role in bringing attention to the harsh realities of war.”

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs faces sweeping sex-trafficking inquiry: What the feds have, need to prove

Over the last few months, a legendary name in the music world has faced a series of shocking allegations of sexual abuse.

In civil lawsuits, four women have accused Sean “Diddy” Combs of rape, assault and other abuses, dating back three decades. One of the allegations involved a minor. The claims sent shock waves through the music industry and put Combs’ entertainment empire in jeopardy.

Now, the hip-hop mogul’s legal troubles have worsened considerably.

Law enforcement sources told The Times that Combs is the subject of a sweeping inquiry into sex-trafficking allegations that resulted in a federal raid Monday at his estates in Los Angeles and Miami.

A law enforcement agent carries a bag of evidence to a van as federal agents stand at the entrance to a property belonging to rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs, Monday, March 25, 2024, on Star Island in Miami Beach, Fla. Two properties belonging to Combs in Los Angeles and Miami were searched Monday by federal Homeland Security Investigations agents and other law enforcement as part of an ongoing sex trafficking investigation by federal authorities in New York, two law enforcement officials told The Associated Press. Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ L.A., Miami homes raided in sex-trafficking inquiry, sources say

Agents search Sean Combs’ Holmby Hills and Miami mansions as part of a federal inquiry into sex trafficking allegations, law enforcement sources said.

March 26, 2024

Authorities have declined to comment on the case, and Combs has not been charged with any crime. But the scene of dozens of Department of Homeland Security agents — guns drawn — searching Combs’ properties underscored the seriousness of the investigation.

At the same time as the raids, police in Miami arrested Brendan Paul, a man described in a recent lawsuit against Combs as a confidant and drug “mule.” Miami-Dade police took Paul, 25, into custody on suspicion of possession of cocaine and a controlled substance-laced candy, records show.

Paul was arrested at Miami Opa-Locka Executive Airport, where TMZ posted video showing Combs walking around Monday afternoon. An affidavit reviewed by the Miami Herald alleged that police working with Homeland Security found drugs in Paul’s bag. There is nothing in Miami court records connecting Combs to Paul, who was later released on $2,500 bail.

The arrest, however, is the latest in a string of legal woes tied to Combs.

Sources with knowledge of the sex-trafficking investigation into Combs, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, said federal authorities have interviewed at least three women, but it’s unclear whether any are among those who have filed suit.

In the wake of multiple lawsuits filed against him, former members of Combs’ inner circle told The Times that his alleged misconduct against women goes back decades.

Dec. 13, 2023

Legal experts say it could take time to build a criminal case against Combs but note that the civil suits could offer investigators a road map.

Dmitry Gorin, a former L.A. County sex-crimes prosecutor who is now in private practice, said the allegations in the lawsuits would likely have been enough for a judge to grant search warrants for Combs’ homes.

Investigators probably would seek authorization to “search for videos or photographs on any devices connected to the target ... anywhere where digital images can be found in connection to sexual conduct that would have been recorded,” Gorin said.

Shawn Holley, an attorney for Combs, did not respond to requests for comment, but Aaron Dyer, another of his lawyers, on Tuesday called the raids a “witch hunt” and “a gross overuse of military-level force.”

“Yesterday, there was a gross overuse of military-level force as search warrants were executed at Mr. Combs’ residences,” Dyer said in a statement. “This unprecedented ambush — paired with an advanced, coordinated media presence — leads to a premature rush to judgment of Mr. Combs and is nothing more than a witch hunt based on meritless accusations made in civil lawsuits. There has been no finding of criminal or civil liability with any of these allegations.”

Combs has previously denied any wrongdoing.

Gorin and other legal experts said investigators could be focused, in part, on the sexual assault allegations involving a minor. If a minor is moved across state lines for the purpose of sex, “that is enough for at least an argument ... of sex trafficking because somebody underage cannot consent,” Gorin said.

“Sex trafficking for adults usually involves some sort of coercion or other restraints,” he said, and can be tougher to prove. Prosecutors would need to show you “encouraged somebody to engage in sexual activity for money or some other inducement.”

Coercion, he added, is not limited to threats of violence. It could involve being held against one’s will or someone simply saying, “I don’t want to participate in group sex, and now I’m being forced to.”

Homeland Security investigates most sex-trafficking operations for the federal government. Legal experts say one possibility why the agency could be involved in this case is because the women involved in the allegations against Combs could be from other countries.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs sexual harassment suit includes notable music industry names

A new suit from music producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones makes new, explosive claims about Combs’ alleged assaults and misconduct in granular detail, naming several prominent artists and music executives as well.

Feb. 28, 2024

Meghan Blanco, a defense attorney who has handled sexual trafficking cases, said they can be “incredibly difficult cases to prove.”

“They have [in the Combs case] convinced one or more federal magistrates they had enough probable cause for one or more search warrants,” Blanco said. “Given the scope of the investigation, it seems they are further along than most investigations.”

Combs’ legal troubles have been building for months.

His former girlfriend, Casandra Ventura, the singer known as Cassie, accused him of rape and repeated physical assaults and said he forced her to have sex with male prostitutes in front of him. Joi Dickerson-Neal accused Combs in a suit of drugging and raping her in 1991, recording the attack and then distributing the footage without her consent.

Liza Gardner filed a third suit in which she claimed Combs and R&B singer Aaron Hall sexually assaulted her. Hall could not be reached for comment.

Another lawsuit alleges that Combs and former Bad Boy label president Harve Pierre gang-raped and sex-trafficked a 17-year-old girl. Pierre said in a statement that the allegations were “disgusting,” “false” and a “desperate attempt for financial gain.”

After the filing of the fourth suit, Combs wrote on Instagram: “Enough is enough. For the last couple of weeks, I have sat silently and watched people try to assassinate my character, destroy my reputation and my legacy. Sickening allegations have been made against me by individuals looking for a quick payday. Let me be absolutely clear: I did not do any of the awful things being alleged. I will fight for my name, my family and for the truth.”

Last month, producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones filed a federal lawsuit against Combs accusing him of sexually harassing and threatening him for more than a year. The suit includes mention of Paul in connection with “the affairs ... involving dealing in controlled substances.”

On Monday, the suit was amended to include Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr. as a co-defendant in the lawsuit.

Cuba Gooding Jr. added as co-defendant in Lil Rod’s lawsuit against Diddy

Cuba Gooding Jr. is added as a co-defendant in a lawsuit against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs. Record producer Rodney ‘Lil Rod’ Jones accuses the actor of sexual assault.

Blanco said prosecutors “are going to look carefully for corroboration — the numbers of people accusing the person of similar acts.” Beyond that, they will be looking for videos, recordings and cellphone records that place people in the same locations or text messages or other discussions at the time of the alleged acts.

She said prosecutors are trying to build a record of incidents that happened some time ago.

Douglas Wigdor, a lawyer for Ventura and another, unnamed plaintiff, said in response to reports of the search warrant issued against Combs: “We will always support law enforcement when it seeks to prosecute those that have violated the law. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a process that will hold Mr. Combs responsible for his depraved conduct.”

Wigdor on Tuesday called his clients “courageous and credible witnesses.”

“To the extent there is a prosecution and they want our clients to testify truthfully,” he said, “I think they will and that will be damning evidence.”

The searches Monday in L.A. and Miami sparked worldwide attention.

Diddy’s ‘Love’ producer Lil Rod accuses him and associates of sexual assault, illicit behavior

Rodney ‘Lil Rod’ Jones has filed a bombshell lawsuit against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs accusing the media mogul of sexually harassing and threatening him.

Feb. 27, 2024

His 17,000-square-foot Holmby Hills mansion, where Combs debuted his last album a year ago, was flooded with Homeland Security agents who gathered evidence on behalf of an investigation being run by the Southern District of New York, according to law enforcement officials familiar with the inquiry.

Two of Combs’ sons were briefly detained at the Holmby Hills property as agents searched the mansion in footage captured by FOX11 Los Angeles.

Both Blanco and Gorin said prosecutors will have to examine the accusers’ motives for coming forward and whether they are motivated by financial gain. They are sure to look for inconsistencies in any allegations, they said.

Any defense, Blanco added, will question why the accusers are only now coming forward and whether they have an incentive beyond justice.

“It comes down to credibility,” she said.

Times staff writers Stacy Perman and Nardine Saad contributed to this report.

Homeland Security raids Holmby Hills home associated with Diddy film company

HOLMBY HILLS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Homeland Security agents on Monday raided a Holmby Hills mansion associated with rap mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs and his production company.

It is believed the raid - as well as a similar operation at a Combs home in Miami - was associated with a federal sex-trafficking investigation based out of New York.

Combs has recently been associated with legal troubles that include lawsuits over alleged sexual assaults and sex trafficking.

HSI agents were conducting their operations in the 200 block of S. Mapleton Drive in Holmby Hills, a wealthy Los Angeles enclave known as a home for celebrities and the Playboy Mansion. The address is associated with Combs' Bad Boy Films production company.

Agents were seen detaining two men who were later identified as Diddy's sons, sources told ABC News. The two sons were not under arrest but were being detained outside as agents searched the property.

Dozens of agents were seen searching through the property, bringing out boxes and even looking through cushions in outdoor pool furniture.

Neighbors tell Eyewitness News they frequently see parties at the property lasting all night but they weren't aware of any illegal activities.

Soon after news of the raid came out, tours were bringing buses of tourists by the home to watch federal agents continue their investigation.

Federal agents were also at a home in Miami associated with Combs.

"Earlier today, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) New York executed law enforcement actions as part of an ongoing investigation, with assistance from HSI Los Angeles, HSI Miami, and our local law enforcement partners. We will provide further information as it becomes available," the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement released to the media.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was also on scene in a supporting role, the department confirmed.

Women who have made public accusations against Diddy are welcoming Monday's law enforcement activity.

Attorney Douglas Wigdor, who represents Cassie Ventura - a singer, actor and former girlfriend of Combs - and an anonymous plaintiff referred to as Jane Doe, issued this statement Monday:

"We will always support law enforcement when it seeks to prosecute those that have violated the law. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a process that will hold Mr. Combs responsible for his depraved conduct."
