Excellent Vatican tour

We truly enjoyed our tour at the Vatican with Nadia! Her emmense knowledge was shared so well, and we were so appreciated of her help to truly take in what we were seeing. Her pace was perfect, not rushed, as there is so much to absorb! Wonderful experience! We will absolutely recommend LivTours for others we know looking for good tours to take when in Rome.

Breakfast tour

Emma was great and we really enjoyed her tour at the Vatican! We have recommended LivTours to our friends who will be in Rome in May. Emma was an excellent representative of your company

Thanks LivTours!

We took four wonderful tours from your company during our visit to Rome in September. We started with a great tour of the Colosseum and Roman Forum that would have been hard to beat, it was so much fun. After that, we took a tour of Ostia Antica, the Borghese Gallery, and our favorite tour of all, a private tour of the Vatican with breakfast. I very much wanted to leave an exceptional review for our Vatican tour guide, Luca, who is an absolutely fabulous tour guide. We travel quite regularly, and all four of us felt he was one of the best guides we've ever had. Super friendly and kind, knowledgeable and passionate about the subject, and just a pleasure to tour with. I will recommend LivItaly Tours to anyone looking for an exceptional tour company. Thank you again!

A great (and delicious) alternative to the normal early morning vatican tour.

Everyone had told us that it's best to take a morning tour of the Vatican to try to avoid the masses. So when we saw this tour offering by LivItaly, we couldn't resist! You have to eat breakfast, right? Why not get into the Vatican early, have a VIP buffet in the museum's courtyard and then proceed through the museum. It was everything we hoped for and more!! Our guide Davide was absolutely fabulous: warm, friendly, very well-versed on everything Vatican and funny as well. The breakfast was delicious and the chance to see the Sistine Chapel before everyone else was there was definitely worth the early rise in the morning. We will certainly recommend this tour to all our friends and family!

Traveler Reviews

Fun way to see the Vatican. The breakfast is in a nice courtyard. It’s nothing fancy but still enjoyable. Our guide was also very informative.

Where to start? A little background: I’ve been to the Vatican and Sistine Chapel twice before this trip without booking a semi private/ VIP tour like this and it really did not hold up to the value they’re claiming. Breakfast: Extremely lackluster and not what advertised. They were stingy with portions (1 very small plate of an item for a table of 4) and the buffet part was just for pancakes. It just wasn’t worth the extra money. Plus, the breakfast essentially pushed us to start the walk through of the Vatican AFTER general admission was allowed to enter. Skipping the Lines: We got to skip the outside line to get in, which was the only benefit. Otherwise, you’re still in crowds and lines when inside, as many other tours are happening PLUS general admission was open too. You can get the “skip the line” feature with other tours too, so this guarantee isn’t enough to book this particular tour given the quality of 90% of it. Group size: Not as advertised. They claimed someone was sick, but the spiel they gave seemed quite rehearsed and after reading more reviews, it seems to be something that occurs pretty frequently. I think they just overbook their tours for extra profit. Tour guide: Just awful. We have spent the last 10 days on multiple tours and had differing guides, and by far, Olga at the Vatican tour was the worst. She didn’t care about her group at all. At one point (for about 30 min), 9 of us were behind massive crowds and she didn’t even stop or realize 9 people were missing! She only cared about the audio headset so when a SOLO FEMALE traveler who spoke little English got lost, she did not have any care for her other than needing the audio headset back. And she said these things over the headset so everyone could hear her being rude. She didn’t care that it was pouring on us when explaining the chapel and insisted we stand there until she finished. This could have been handled totally differently, as we could’ve been explained this under the restaurant umbrellas 10 feet away. She also literally tried to start an argument with me and my husband IN the quiet part of the Sistine Chapel (where you’re not allowed to talk). A Vatican guard yelled at her!! Also, many people had their headset off by the end of the tour due to her talking fast and being rude. We did have a huge issue with this tour provider (City Wonders) and how they handled anyone with walking issues or wheelchair needs. My elderly mom has a portable wheelchair (almost like a stroller because of how it can fold and be carried easily) that the Vatican would have allowed us to take in but our tour guide refused. This wheelchair was only needed so my mom could keep up with the tour, as she can walk but just at a slower pace. If there were stairs, my husband or dad could have folded it up in 2 seconds and carried it up the stairs as we assisted her. Olga and the tour operator were unhelpful, claiming how it’s advertised here that it’s not wheelchair accessible, but it feels really hypocritical that they are standing their ground on a sensitive topic based on their description on Viator/ Trip Advisor, yet do not uphold their other descriptions that are more upfront (ie, breakfast buffet that was not a buffet, entering after general admission has entered, group size max, etc). There was another woman on the tour that had a cane and was having trouble. Olga also put down my mom and this lady multiple times via the microphone on the audio headset. When I contacted the tour operator, they were not helpful in taking accountability or holding Olga accountable. They wouldn’t apologize for the wheelchair incident due to their own policy against them. Honestly, even without the whole wheelchair issue, this was not worth the money. Please spend your money on another tour that will actually uphold the quality they claim so you can actually enjoy your experience. It was such a shame that this didn’t live up to the expectations, as I was most excited for this tour based on the description.

Breakfast was better than expected! The tour was awesome. Our tour guide, her name escapes me, was fantastic! She was personable and very energetic as well as knowledgeable! Made the experience one to remember. Would highly recommend!

Breakfast not great. No help or advice as my wife is disabled. It felt all a rush. The buildings were magnificent

This booking leads you to believe that you will be in a small intimate group of no more than 13 OR fewer people making you feel like a VIP to see the Vatican before the swarms of tourists get there. It also says that you will be eating within the Vatican museums. The truth is that our intimate group of 16 (not 13 or fewer) was in fact one of MANY intimate groups who all gathered together in a huge breakfast assembly area where we were so far down the line that we were seated last and were barely served a bite of food before the first seated had already finished eating and the tour was started. So we took a piece of bread to go and this massive group now joined the masses of tourists flooding the Vatican. Total wasn’t of money. The only good thing was that our guide was really professional and a nice person. None of this was her fault. This is a scam people !

While it was nice to get through in the morning, it felt very rushed. It was very busy even though it was supposed to be prior to opening to the general public because the amount of tour groups going was a lot. Stefania, our guide, was great at explaining everything but it was still very rushed.

The tour guide was fantastic. Marina knew her stuff and she was vibrant and excited which was great to see in a host. We booked this breakfast tour thinking we would get in before the crowds. We got breakfast outside at the Vatican museum which was yummy however once that was over we entered the facility and there were hundreds and hundreds of people already there. The place was crowded and hot. It was such an unpleasant experience. Inside the Sistine Chapel people were packed in like sardines and a man was screaming through the speakers that everyone had to be quiet and no photos were allowed. I would not go back however this is no reflection on the tour company as they were great.

the tour was great especially skipping the line but the breakfast part was horrible. Very poor quality and choices so it’s not worth the fee or time spent. I recommend this tour WITHOUT the breakfast part.

Took a magical tour in the Vatican with Asunda ! Start your journey with a delicious breakfast followed by a wonderful tour with an experienced guide who took us above and beyond the expected itinerary.

The guide was very good. The tour is excellent, if you have in mind that the place is huge and you can not see everything. Tour was as it described in Viator, nothing of that missed. Very good experience. Breakfast included was good, but if you have so many things to see may be that time could have been visiting the Vatican Museaun for a longer time.

Vatican City

Following the fall of the Papal States and the growth of the movement for unity in Italy, the relationship between the Catholic Church and the Italian State was peacefully ratified with the signing, by Pope Pius XI and Benito Mussolini, of the Lateran Treaty on February, 1929.

Following the Corcordat, the Vatican became an independent, sovereign state, less than half a square kilometre, the smallest state in existence. The Pope is the temporal ruler, a power he delegates to his Secretary of State. The Vatican is surrounded by a wall built by different Popes between 1550 and 1640. As an autonomous state, the Vatican has its own Governor, appointed by the Pope, its own legislature, executive and judiciary. The state also has its own postage-stamps, currency, radio station, newspaper (L’Osservatore Romano), security guards, police force and Swiss Guards.

What to know about vatican from our local guides.

What should I not miss in the Vatican Museums?

The Vatican Museums house 70,000 of the world’s greatest artistic treasures, of which 20,000 are on display. From ancient Roman sculptures to Renaissance paintings, it would take days to discover it all, which is why we highly recommend booking a Vatican tour to help you make the most of your time at the museums.

A few of the collection’s undisputed highlights are:

  • The Sistine Chapel, adorned with Michelangelo’s legendary frescoes
  • The Raphael Rooms, which include the famous School of Athens
  • The Gallery of the Maps, perhaps the most famous of the Museums’ galleries adorned with 40 maps depicting the different regions of Italy
  • Laocoön and His Sons, an enigmatic masterpiece of ancient sculpture
  • The Belvedere Torso, which is said to have influenced the work of Michelangelo himself

Why is the Sistine Chapel so famous?

The Sistine Chapel is perhaps the most famous individual room in the entire world. This is in no small part due to the significant artistic masterpieces adorning its interior, with Michelangelo’s “The Last Judgment” and ceiling frescoes being the highlights.

Pope Sixtus IV, the chapel’s namesake, commissioned its construction in the late 15th century. Today, its best-known use is for the papal conclaves, the process through which a new pope is elected by the College of Cardinals. It also serves as the Pope’s own private chapel when he is at the Vatican.

Want to have the Sistine Chapel all to yourself, just like the Pope? Avoid the crowds on a VIP tour outside opening hours. For a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience, you can even accompany the Vatican Key Master himself as he opens the silent halls and galleries in the Vatican Museums early in the morning—including the Sistine Chapel.

What can I see inside St. Peter’s Basilica?

As the largest church in the world, St. Peter’s Basilica is itself a masterpiece of art and architecture. It houses some of the most significant religious art in the world, including Michelangelo’s moving Pietà sculpture and the Baldachin, Bernini’s massive bronze altar canopy.

Michelangelo was also the mastermind behind the famous dome crowning the basilica. Climbing the dome is a fantastic way to see not just the incredible mosaics lining the interior up close, but also to feast your eyes on spectacular views over Rome from the very top. Keep in mind that there are over 500 steps to get to the top of the dome from ground level, though an elevator is available to bypass approximately the first half. Underneath the Basilica, the Papal Crypts mark the final resting place of some of the most important Popes in Catholic history.

A guided tour of St. Peter’s Basilica will give you an up-close look at all of these treasures and more. Led by an expert art historian guide, you’ll see a side of the world’s most iconic church that few others get to experience.

Is it possible to get skip the line tickets for the Vatican?

The best and easiest way to ensure you skip the line at the Vatican is to book a guided tour . With no-wait access to the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica, you’ll save precious hours of time that would have been spent in line. Plus, you'll be in the company of an insightful guide who can provide context on the innumerable masterpieces that can be hard to make sense of on your own.

What are the Vatican Museums’ opening hours?

The Vatican Museums are open Monday to Saturday from 9 am–6 pm. They tend to get more crowded the later in the day you go, so consider booking an early morning Vatican tour to get ahead of the crowds and ensure a more relaxed visit.

For an especially exclusive experience, consider joining the Vatican Key Master himself as he unlocks the silent halls, galleries, and even the Sistine Chapel first thing in the morning before the Museums open to the public. Accompanied by a small group of just 20 other people, the Key Master’s Tour is the most special way to experience the Vatican in total peace and quiet.

Don’t want to get up early? Another excellent option is to take a special access tour after closing time to wander the halls of the Vatican in peace—and have the Sistine Chapel all to yourself.

From May through October, the Vatican Museums offer extended opening hours until 10:30 pm on Fridays and 8 pm on Saturdays. Taking a night tour of the Vatican is a once-in-a-lifetime experience you won’t soon forget!

The Museums are closed most Sundays (except for the last Sunday of every month) and on certain public holidays.

What is the Vatican dress code?

The Vatican is a religious site, and official rules mandate that visitors dress appropriately or risk being turned away. All guests regardless of gender are required to keep their shoulders and knees covered. In warmer months, it’s useful to have a shawl, scarf, or light jacket handy to pull on when entering the Vatican if your outfit doesn’t meet the dress code standards. Additionally, hats are not allowed.

While the Vatican dress code doesn’t have any hard-and-fast rules regarding footwear, keep in mind that you’ll be doing a lot of walking on your Vatican tour. As long as you have comfortable shoes that are good for walking, you’re all set.

What are the best restaurants near the Vatican?

While there aren’t any restaurants within Vatican City itself, the surrounding Prati and Trionfale neighborhoods offer plenty of excellent options—particularly if you don’t mind walking a few blocks away (or further) from the Vatican walls. For a quick, on-the-go option, Anthony Bourdain-approved Bonci Pizzarium serves up some of the best pizza by the slice in Rome. In the mood for a sit-down meal after spending hours on your feet at the Vatican? Velavevodetto ai Quiriti—the Prati outpost of Testaccio icon Flavio al Velavevodetto—is perfect for home-cooked Roman classics.

What parts of the museums will you visit?

We have carefully crafted a special itinerary that will take you to see the main parts of the museums. With this tailored tour, you will visit the famous Gallery of the Candelabra. This place takes its name from the majestic candelabras that divide this gallery into six sections. The sculptures are all arranged following symmetrical criteria compatible with the architecture of the six fabulously designed rooms. This place contains artworks found throughout the country, from the time of the Roman Empire to modern-day. From there you will explore the Gallery of Tapestries displaying the work of Raffaello Sanzio. This exhibition is completely protected from sunlight in order to best preserve the tapestries. Each of these massive tapestries displays different powerful Catholic stories and myths. You will also explore the Gallery of Maps where you can gain an understanding of what the world was thought to look like centuries ago, at a time when cartography was undergoing its own renaissance.

The beauty and complexity of the Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel is renowned for being decorated with what many perceive as the most spectacular masterpiece in human history, Michelangelo’s frescoes that cover the ceiling. The Sistine Chapel ceiling helped Rome overtake Florence as the supreme cultural capital of Italy. Thanks to the special time-slot provided by this tour, you will be able to walk around and admire the frescoes in complete silence. The experience will be much more insightful when the place is not crowded. The chapel is covered in beautiful and noble colours in the famous shades of ochre, umber green, Sangiovanni white, and ultramarine blue. The central part of the ceiling is divided into 9 panels portraying stories from the Book of Genesis such as the awe-inspiring Division of Light from Darkness, Creation of the Stars, of the Waters, of Adam, of Eve and finally the Creation of the Original Sin. Michelangelo’s genius has to be admired in silence but your assigned guide will give you a description of what you are about to experience before entering the chapel and will handle your questions once out.

Religious art at St Peter’s Basilica

This tour encompasses all the attractions of the Vatican, including a visit to St Peter’s Basilica,* a unique example of Renaissance architecture and Baroque art and a symbol of huge significance to Christianity. You will enter the Basilica through a special-access corridor, skipping the long general-access lines. The creation and décor of the Basilica involved the most brilliant engineering and artistic minds of the time. Tourists of all faiths visit the Basilica to discover and admire the creations of the geniuses of Michelangelo and Bernini. You will discover Michelangelo’s Pietà, an extremely moving sculpture depicting the lifeless body of Jesus in the arms of his mother Mary. Under the same roof, there is Bernini’s Baldachin, a massive sculpted bronze canopy that sits above St. Peter’s tomb. The Baldachin is not only jaw-dropping, but it is a prime example of the style that flourished around Europe at the beginning of the 17th century, Baroque. At the end of the tour, you can explore more at your own pace.

Small-Group Tour

You can join this early entrance guided tour, as part of a group of no more than 12 people. Being part of a small-group when touring the Vatican can be a fun yet more personal experience since the size of the group is small. Your assigned guide will accommodate everyone on the tour and answer everyone’s questions. Our guides are highly experienced at keeping such groups engaged and entertained and they will provide top insider knowledge on the monuments. This option is more budget-friendly while not giving away the benefits of having a guide to accompany you as you discover the Vatican. On top of that, it has proved to be a great option for tourists who do not mind the presence of other like-minded and culture-hungry travellers who are all enthusiastic about discovering the Vatican.

Needless to say that you will benefit from the undivided attention of your guide and that you can also benefit from flexibility of itinerary. With this choice you will experience the Vatican in a very time-efficient and seamless way, where you can spend more time on the galleries that appeal to you the most and less time in others, you will see the Vatican at your own pace. You can also choose this option and upgrade it to include pick-up from your accommodation. This option promises a much more comfortable, efficient, and authentic experience!

This tour runs from Monday to Saturday and it includes St Peter’s Basilica every day except on Wednesdays. The Basilica is an active Church and on Wednesdays it is closed until 1 PM due to the weekly Papal audience. Instead, you will spend more time discovering the hidden gems of the Vatican Museums. Rest assured that your guide will give you an introduction of the Basilica and the art inside so you know what to look for if you wish to visit later. Moreover, when visiting St. Peter’s Basilica and/or the Vatican Museums, you are kindly asked to respect the city’s dress code, which implies having your knees and shoulders covered.
