PREVIEW: August’s 56-YEAR MISSION Las Vegas Convention

Connect with trekcore.

We’re just over a month out from the second big  Star Trek -focused convention of 2022, as Creation Entertainment’s annual Las Vegas show is set to beam down to Bally’s Las Vegas Hotel & Casino in August.

creation entertainment star trek 2022

The unofficial  56-Year Mission: Las Vegas convention moves from its longtime home at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino to Bally’s Las Vegas this year — as the former locale undergoes major renovations — and will be slightly-reduced four-day event, running from Thursday, August 25 through Sunday, August 28.

As of this writing, Creation is advertising 130 guests for the event — and while a great number of those listed are one-off guest actors, panelists for Trek- related content, podcasters, or fans with creative projects, there is still a good representation of on-screen Star Trek stars scheduled to attend.

From the Kelvin Timeline films, Spock actor Zachary Quinto will be making his first appearance at the annual convention in several years — along with Keenser actor Deep Roy — while a fourth film for their Enterprise crew remains in production limbo following its announced 2023 release projection.

The modern era of  Star Trek production will be well represented in Las Vegas, as Anson Mount (Pike) and Rebecca Romijn (Number One) from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , Kate Mulgrew (Janeway) and John Noble (The Diviner) from Star Trek: Prodigy , Tawny Newsome from Star Trek: Lower Decks , Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine), Michelle Hurd (Raffi), Annie Wersching (Borg Queen), Evan Evagora (Elnor), Isa Briones (Soji), James Callis (Maurice Picard) from Star Trek: Picard  will all be in attendance.

Star Trek: Discovery cast members  Sonequa Martin-Green (Burnham), Anthony Rapp (Stamets), Blu del Barrio (Adira), Tig Notaro (Jett Reno), Doug Jones (Saru), Ian Alexander (Gray), Emily Coutts (Detmer), Patrick Kwok-Choon (Rhys),  Phumzile Sitole (Ndoye), Mary Wiseman (Tilly), and Wilson Cruz (Culber) will all be on hand throughout the event.

William Shatner (Kirk), George Takei (Sulu), and Walter Koenig (Chekov) lead the Original Series representation, while Gates McFadden (Crusher), Jonathan Frakes (Riker), Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar), and John de Lancie (Q) will represent  The Next Generation .

Deep Space Nine cast attendees include Nana Visitor (Kira), Andrew Robinson (Garak), Armin Shimerman (Quark), Casey Biggs (Damar), Chase Masterson (Leeta), Cirroc Lofton (Jake Sisko), Jeffrey Combs (Weyoun), Max Grodenchik (Rom), Nicole de Boer (Ezri Dax), and Terry Farrell (Jadzia) —  as Tim Russ (Tuvok), Ethan Phillips (Neelix), Robbie McNeill (Paris), Robert Beltran (Chakotay) and Garrett Wang (Kim) represent Star Trek: Voyager , while John Billingsley (Phlox), Anthony Montgomery (Mayweather), Connor Trinneer (Tucker) covers the Enterprise era.

A great number of special events and panels are planned for the long Las Vegas weekend, including a Thursday night dinner and comedy show starring Star Trek: Discovery’s Tig Notaro (for those who purchased “Gold”-level tickets exclusively), as well as two  Star Trek movie screenings for milestone anniversaries —  Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan for its 40th, and  Star Trek: Nemesis which hits 20 years this winter.

Designer Geoffrey Mandel will take fans behind the scenes of Star Trek: Picard , presenting a look at the graphics work that has gone into the Paramount+ series, and he’ll also be exploring his well-loved Star Trek: Star Charts book which is still used as galactic map reference material in the modern-day Star Trek production offices.

creation entertainment star trek 2022

A number of science-focused panels are also planned, including  Star Trek’s Greatest Biological hits and Near-Misses with Dr. Mohamad Noor,  The Real Astrometrics Lab with astrophysics expert Dr. Norbert Zacharias,  Space Exploration with Arizona State University’s Professor David Williams, and many more.

Admission passes for Creation Entertainment’s 56-Year Mission: Las Vegas convention are still available in multiple tiers, along with their usual autograph and photo op tickets — if you’re heading to Las Vegas for the 2022 show, have a great time and we’ll see you there.

While at Bally’s for the convention, Otoy showcase an immersive “The Cage” experience, enabling viewers to explore the first deck of the Enterprise created by Roddenberry for the initial pilot of Star Trek . The fully immersive, interactive, 360-degree experience allows audiences to navigate around the Starship Enterprise Bridge and even sit in Captain Pike’s chair as if they were there on set of “The Cage” in 1964.

Also unveiled in Las Vegas were recreations of scenes from Star Trek ‘s early TV and film history that can be explored in 3D with actors Mahé Thaissa and Lawrence Selleck bringing “The Cage”‘s Yeoman Colt and Mr. Spock to life. Recreations of the set from “The Cage” and the Enterprise Bridge was overseen by preeminent Star Trek cast and crew including Denise and Mike Okuda, authors of Star Trek: The Encyclopedia , and renowned Star Trek VFX artists Doug Drexler and Daren Dochterman.

On a mainstage panel moderated by Gates McFadden, who played Dr. Beverly Crusher in projects ranging from Star Trek: The Next Generation to Star Trek: Picard , Otoy’s Co-Founder and CEO, Jules Urbach, joined the Okudas and Dochterman, as well as Roddenberry Entertainment President Rod Roddenberry to discuss the past year of work on the Roddenberry Archive. The panel wound down with a concept teaser for the Star Trek immersive experiences titled “765874,” which was put together via cutting-edge virtual production technologies, as well as access to LightStage scans of original Star Trek uniforms, props and archival materials. Also presented was a second teaser, “Memory Wall,” exploring scenes and concepts of the characters in “The Cage” and Roddenberry’s novelization, Star Trek: The Motion Picture .

The immersive experiences were accompanied by the release of three supplemental video logs providing archival behind-the-scenes testimony surrounding the creation of the first Star Trek pilot. The videos featured interviews inside fully recreated, life-sized Star Trek virtual production sets with the Okudas; Chis Hunter, son of Jeffrey Hunter who played Captain Pike in “The Cage”; Sean Kenney who played Captain Pike in The Menagerie ; and Robert Butler, director of “The Cage.” The clips also highlighted archival photographs from the set of “The Cage,” and behind the scenes material drawn from thousands of documents that have been digitally archived by The Roddenberry Estate in collaboration with Otoy.

“For over a decade we have been collaborating with The Roddenberry Estate to preserve Gene Roddenberry’s legacy. Today’s release marks the first steps towards capturing Gene’s work in a new way that is fully immersive and interactive for future generations to experience Star Trek as if they were there in 1964,” said Urbach. “Gene Roddenberry saw into the future and projected a vision of the future where remarkable technologies affirmed the human spirit and ethical powers. Technological advances today in holographic imaging and real time graphics are making recreating his vision ever more possible and we are thrilled to work with the Roddenberry Estate to preserve Gene’s salient messages for humanity in the most authentic and open ways possible.”

“We started archiving materials from my father’s life over a decade ago hoping to preserve not just the iconic objects that made Star Trek such a successful franchise but more importantly the personal notes, internal documents, and never seen prototypes that fueled the various iterations of Star Trek ,” added Rod Roddenberry. “We wanted to provide a behind-the-scenes personal story about Gene and the evolution of the series, which has made such a profound impact on the development of humanity in the 20th century, inspiring so many around the world. With new real time and holographic technologies it is getting more and more possible to immerse new generations who didn’t experience Star Trek first-hand into my father’s universe, and we are thrilled to push forward on this new frontier in collaboration with 3D graphics pioneer, OTOY.”

The Roddenberry Archive immersive experience and behind-the-scenes video logs are available for the public to view online at this link . These materials will be augmented with additional archive features throughout 2022. All of the Roddenberry Archive documents are also preserved on the Render Network, providing an open blockchain digital archive of all of Roddenberry’s lifetime of works in an open format for future generations to access.

The 56-Year Mission: Las Vegas runs at Bally’s through August 28th. The Star Trek experience teaser “Memory Wall” can be viewed above.

The Ultimate Guide to Attending Creation Entertainment Conventions

Briar

Every year, Creation Entertainment puts on multiple conventions for various fandoms, including Supernatural, Stranger Things, Star Trek , The Vampire Diaries , and more. With a lot of people attending these conventions for the first time, we’ve compiled some tips and tricks to create the ultimate guide to attending a Creation Entertainment convention!

COVID Test, Registration, Tickets

The first thing you’ll want to do when you arrive at the convention is getting your COVID test. Right now, Creation is requiring a negative test to attend their conventions. You can either bring results from a test you took at a pharmacy or testing site (the test must be completed no longer than 36 hours ahead of when you register), or you can bring an at-home test that you’ll have to take in front of a Creation team member. There are also a limited amount of tests available to purchase there, but we recommend either getting it done beforehand or bringing your own test in.

After you get cleared for the COVID testing and get your wristband, check the schedule of when your pass can register. We recommend registering on Thursday night (usually the first night of the convention unless your convention is 4-days, then you’ll want to do it on Wednesday). If you have a Gold, Silver, Copper, or GA Weekend pass, you can register early. Make sure to check the schedule for the specific times registration opens for each pass. Usually, Gold & VIP go first followed by Silver, Copper, and GA.

After you register, you’ll need to exchange any PDF tickets for specific guests. For Supernatural conventions, for example, you’ll need to exchange PDF tickets for hard copy tickets for anything that includes Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, or Misha Collins. There’s usually a table set up in or near the vendor room, where you give them your PDF printout, and they’ll hand you a hard copy ticket. Make sure to keep these in a safe place, as they have no way to replace them.

Autographs usually take place in the main ballroom and are at specific times as laid out in the schedule. For some conventions, like Supernatural , only certain actors are signing with a specific pass. Therefore, if you want an autograph from Jared Padalecki or Jensen Ackles, you must purchase a Gold or Silver pass, and there are no separate tickets available to purchase for those autographs. For everyone else, you’re able to buy tickets either online at Creation’s website or at the convention as long as they’re not sold out.

For obtaining your autos, you’ll sit in the ballroom until they call your ticket by row or type (they’ll also put it up on the screens next to the stage). If you are not a Gold or Silver pass and the actor is accepting PDFs or autograph tickets, you’ll be called when it’s your turn. Gold or Silver always goes first. Make sure to have your item out and ready to sign! Some actors allow for personalizations (such as your name) and a Creation team member will write your name on a sticky note and give it to you. However, some do not allow personalization so be mindful of that as well.

Keep your interactions short and sweet, and remember there is a line behind you. If you want a longer conversation, consider bidding on a meet and greet!

Photos are a great way to have some fun at conventions. You can purchase a ticket either online on Creation’s website, or at the convention. The schedule will lay out when each photo op is scheduled to take place. It’s best to get the tickets for the photo ops you really want early, as some may sell out before the convention.

Some of the photo ops where they expect a large number of people will be called by number in the ballroom, so make sure to sit in there to see when your op is called, and don’t crowd around the op room. Each photo op ticket has a number, so for some of the actors, they’ll start with 1-50, then 1-100, etc. It will be displayed on the screens in the ballroom, so you’ll have to wait there to see when it’s your turn. If you have more than one op ticket for the same person or group, you can take them back to back, and you can line up with the earliest ticket number you have.

For other ops, you can arrive where the photo ops are taking place and ask where the line is. Please do not line up early, and remember that sometimes things shift and the ops might be a few minutes behind. Make sure to check in the ballroom or with the nearest Creation team member for questions.

For photos, remember to be respectful. You can ask for a hug, etc. for the pose, but please consult the Creation team and/or the actor before any hugs or poses to see if they’re allowed.

Vendor Room

The vendor room is a great place to check out all fandom-related items! Vendors have booths set up where you can purchase some great items relating to the fandom at which convention you’re at. They often sell some great things that you can get signed for your autos so you don’t need to bring something with you. There’s so many wonderful hand-made one-of-a-kind items here, so definitely bring some extra spending money to use here.

Creation also has a huge table with merch as well as 8×10 photos.

Also in the vendor room, there might be some actors and/or musicians that have booths set up. For the Supernatural conventions, often Louden Swain and Jason Manns have tables where you can buy merch (Jason also meets at his table at select times). Some actors, also hold their autographs in there, so make sure to check out the schedule for more information, as this will be listed there.

If you’re at a Supernatural convention, usually on Saturdays, Louden Swain will do a “vendor jam” which is right before their scheduled autographs. The band will play a few songs acoustically, and it’s something that you don’t want to miss!

Meet & Greets

Meet & Greets are special blocks of times that you can purchase that give you an opportunity to meet an actor or celebrity and ask questions among a limited amount of people. There are usually only 10-20 people, depending on the meet & greet, and you all sit in a circle and take turns asking questions. It’s really intimate and a great experience. Everything in the meet & greet is also kept between those in there, so the actors are more forthcoming with information about new projects, etc.

Creation Entertainment will hold an auction usually a few weeks before the convention, and the only way to purchase a meet & greet is to win one via auction . You can read more about meet & greets, here .

Special Events

Special events are so much fun! Whether it’s a game night, pajama party, dinner, or more, they’re a great way to have a fun experience with one of the convention guests!

For Supernatural , Kim Rhodes and Briana Buckmaster often host a Pajama Party on Thursday nights, which consists of a limited amount of guests and Kim and Briana, dressed in pajamas, where you chat, eat dinner (usually Pizza or something similar) and hang out.

The Supernatural conventions are also known for a kick-ass concert on Saturday night, the Saturday Night Special, where Rob Benedict and band Louden Swain put together a rock show featuring their own songs, covers, and special guests including some of the actors. The concert is included in a Gold, Silver, or Copper ticket, and is available to purchase separately for other convention tickets.

There’s also Ruth’s Witching Hour, Sammies with Sammie, Jason’s Mann Cave, and other similar events where you get to hang out with an actor or celebrity in a fun setting. These experiences are available to purchase on Creation’s website under the convention you’re interested in attending. The events often change with each convention and guest, so make sure to check out what’s available for your con.

creation entertainment star trek 2022

On days of the convention, there is usually programming from open to close in the main ballroom. There are Q&A panels where the actors get up on stage and you’re able to ask questions. These usually last about 45 minutes.

You’re able to ask the guests a question by lining up on the sides of the ballroom where there will be a microphone and a Creation team member. Some panels, such as Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, and Misha Collins for Supernatural conventions, are done by a lottery system. There is a table set up either near registration or in the vendor’s room (ask Creation if you cannot find it) where you can write your name down if you want to get a question and names will be chosen at random before the panel. This helps alleviate a mass rush to the microphones, etc.

Questions should be short and limited to one question, not multiple. Also, while the actors mean a lot to you (they do to everyone at the convention), it’s best to not share personal stories at this time so that as many people can ask questions as possible. Personal requests (such as taking a photo, shoutouts, singing Happy Birthday, etc.) are not allowed.

The rooms often get cold, so make sure you take a sweater or jacket just in case. Also, it’s best to keep some food with you, like granola bars, crackers, etc., and water, to make sure you stay hydrated. The convention is often so packed with programming it’s easy to forget to hydrate and eat something!

Auctions, Trivia, and More

When there aren’t panels going on, the main ballroom will often have other programming such as trivia and auctions. There’s yes/no trivia (where you hold up signs that say “Yes” or “No” and answer the question), or regular trivia. There are often prizes such as gift cards to use for Creation merch and more.

There are also auctions held, where Creation auctions off things like signed banners from the convention as well as other signed and unsigned items from your convention and other conventions. These are a great way to grab unique items for your collection!

creation entertainment star trek 2022

Karaoke is a free event that Creation holds on Friday nights where fans can have fun with some of the actors from the convention. There will be sign-ups earlier in the day (see the schedule for times/locations) where you can submit a song request. Right now, it’s limited to a group of 2 people on stage for one song. The names will be drawn at random during Karaoke, so be ready! You don’t need to sing karaoke to enjoy it, though. You can still attend and dance and sing along. Karaoke is a fun atmosphere, so make sure to check it out!

There are a few etiquette rules to follow while attending a convention.

  • Be respectful to fellow fans, actors, guests, and Creation team members.
  • For panels: keep questions short, no personal stories or requests.
  • Do not shout from the audience.
  • For photos: ask before any hugs, poses, etc.

In general, just remember to be respectful, have fun, and you’re sure to have a great time! Conventions are a wonderful experience and a place for so many to make new friends.

Explore life-size bridge of Enterprise at ‘Star Trek’ convention in Vegas

A recreation experience called “The Cage” gives viewers a 360-degree view of the Enterprise bridge.

Taylor Lane

What if you could explore the starship Enterprise as if you were on the set of the 1964 pilot of “Star Trek”?

Through immersive technology, now you can.

The Roddenberry Estate and OTOY Inc., a graphics company, are previewing life-sized recreations of the Enterprise at Creation Entertainment’s 56-Year Mission Las Vegas 2022 , a “Star Trek” franchise convention being held at Bally’s Hotel and Casino now through Aug. 28.

The recreation experience, called “The Cage,” gives viewers a 360-degree view of the Enterprise bridge. Viewers can even sit in Captain Christopher Pike’s chair.

OTOY also unveiled scene recreations from early “Star Trek” TV and films with Yeoman Colt and Mr. Spock, played by actors Mahé Thaissa and Lawrence Selleck.

If you’re worried about authenticity, have no fear. “The Cage” set and recreation of the Enterprise bridge were overseen by “Star Trek” cast and crew members, including “Star Trek: The Encyclopedia” authors Denis and Mike Okuda and “Star Trek” visual effects artists Doug Drexler and Daren Dochterman.

A panel featuring Rod Roddenberry, president of Roddenberry Entertainment; Jules Urbach, founder and CEO of OTOY; Denise and Mike Okuda; and Daren Dochterman discussed the work on the Roddenberry Archive from the past year on Thursday.

Roddenberry spoke about preserving his father’s legacy for future generations.

“We started archiving materials from my father’s life over a decade ago hoping to preserve not just the iconic objects that made Star Trek such a successful franchise but more importantly the personal notes, internal documents, and never seen prototypes that fueled the various iterations of Star Trek.

“With new real time and holographic technologies it is getting more and more possible to immerse new generations who didn’t experience Star Trek first-hand into my father’s universe, and we are thrilled to push forward on this new frontier in collaboration with 3D graphics pioneer, OTOY.”

Urbach explained on the panel how OTOY has worked with the Roddenberry Estate on advancing Gene Roddenberry’s vision of the future.

“Technological advances today in holographic imaging and real time graphics are making recreating his vision ever more possible and we are thrilled to work with the Roddenberry Estate to preserve Gene’s salient messages for humanity in the most authentic and open ways possible,” Urbach said.

This week brings updates from a couple of the big conventions on many Star Trek fan calendars. In Europe, Massive Events have decided to do just one big Star Trek con this year, with the September event in Germany being their sole official European Star Trek convention. And back in the USA, Creation Entertainment has reached 100 guests for the 56-Year Mission convention set in Las Vegas for August.

DST London canceled, but London Comic Con has Trek tribute

Massive Events runs the two big official Star Trek conventions in Europe. However for 2022 Massive Events has just announced Destination Star Trek London planned for September 30 – October 2, 2022, has been canceled. Massive’s announced stated they have “decided to run just one big Destination Star Trek event this year.” His makes Destination Star Trek Germany (September 23 to 25 in Dortmund Germany) the sole official European Star Trek event in 2022. Currently, the German event has announced 18 celebrity guests including a cast reunion for Star Trek: Voyager . More info can be found at destinationstartrekgermany.com .

As of now, they have not announced any London dates for 2023, and DST London 2022 ticket holders are advised they will be updated via email regarding their ticket. Massive did offer some solace to UK Star Trek fans, pointing them to London Film & Comic Con being held 8-10 July which will include a special Tribute To Star Trek, including many of the guests who were lined up for DST London. More details on that event can be found at londonfilmandcomiccon.com .

And with the announcement of Voyager’s Robert Picardo the con now has 100 Star Trek guests lined up for the four-day event running from August 25-28, held this year at Bally’s Hotel and Casino. Headliners for the event include William Shatner, Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Kate Mulgrew, Jeri Ryan, Zachary Quinto, Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Ron Perlman, and John Noble. Podcast: All Access Returns From STLV To Review The ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 2 Finale

I’m glad that the official Star Trek: Mission conventions are moving around.

While I know that STLV became a thing with Creation, something was lost when Creation moved away from the regional cons.

Seattle will be a great location. I have nostalgic memories about a CreationCon their many years ago (and others in different US cities).

Now all we need is for a dedicated Star Trek con to take place in Canada. While it’s nice to have feature panels at General science fiction or comicons, I think Toronto has earned the role of host at least once.

Yea, but it’s so expensive and crazy to have to travel for a Holiday weekend like that, not to mention family obligations. Memorial day weekend is a bad choice for a Star Trek convention. What were they thinking?

They’ll probably get west coast fans, including people down from Vancouver or even Calgary.

For some, a long weekend is a positive.

Hi friends, back in the 80s and 90s all the cons I attended were Creation cons. Have not been to a convention in many years (too expensive)

What happened with Creation and Star Trek? I don’t know any of the details…

At some point, Creation focused everything in a single mega sized “official” annual event in Las Vegas.

It became enormous and a place for serious fans to meet everyone and each other, but in my view something important in terms of outreach was lost.

When the licensing contract came up recently, Paramount went with a different firm which is required to move the one big “official” annual con around major US cities.

Creation is carrying on with annual summer Cons in Las Vegas under another name and without the official status that brings exhibits from the studio and panels with the showrunners.

Creation stopped being a good con provider a couple decades ago. They’re a pale shadows of what they once were in their heyday.

I have great memories of Dest Trek London, Brent spiner having an angry meltdown doing autographs, annoying star trek fans by asking Brent about things outside of star trek at the QnA, meeting a beautiful girl dressed as a Borg who threatened to stab me in the “ten forward” bar in the evening after she had a few drinks, watching chase masterton attempt to stay in tune when ‘singing’, pissing off Patrick Stewart by telling him his boots were actually shoes

What REALLY sucks is that the company is refusing to issue refunds after canceling the event.

Or, you can call Robert Picardo about the 82nd guest if you don’t count people there who are college professors, general scientists, really big fans, a cosplayer, or (…someone explain this one to me…) the mayor of Yelm, Washington.
