Heading up from nyc with three other pals in late April for a little mini vacation from nyc.
I'd really love to go on a Molson Brewery Tour and sample some of the goods, lol.
Can I do this? I cant really find good info online.
Any info would be appreciated.
PS- i am staying downtown at the novotel, where are the bar / club areas?
On the http://www.molson.com FAQs:
"Q. Is it possible to visit one of your breweries?
A. Regretfully, because of security and availability issues, we no longer conduct tours of our breweries or offices. However, we do offer an online Brewing Process Tour."
I'll let another poster direct you to downtown bar/club areas by Novotel.
If you are downtown you are in the middle of the action. Upsaclesplaces on Crescent, some more subdued, like pubs on the streets west of it. Strips clubs on Sainte Catherine. The whole shebang. Just ask the concierge at your hotel for suggestions according to what is more precisely your style, or if there is none just ask the deskclerk, you are in the center of action so everybody's know.

The story behind the label
Molson, it’s the name on the label but there’s a lot behind it. With the determination to make the world a better place, John Molson built a legacy of more than just great beer. Today, we carry that belief in everything we do. Because the best way to honour history is to keep making it.
Molson, it’s the name on the label but there’s a lot behind it. With the determination to make the world a better place, John Molson built a legacy of more than just great beer. Today, we carry that belief in everything we do. Because the best way to honour history is to keep making it.
A Journey To Canada
At age 18, John Molson sailed on a leaking ship from England to Canada, with a thirst for a better beer in a new country. In 1786, he founded the Molson Brewery, the oldest brewery in North America, and subsequently, Canada’s second oldest company.
A public hospital for those in need
When Molson saw that the only hospital in Montreal had a mere 30 beds, he took it upon himself to lobby support to build the first public hospital in the city. By May of that same year, the Montreal General Hospital was opened.
A railway to build connections
In the spirit of bringing people together, John Molson helped create the first ever railway connecting Canadians to our neighbours in the south. The Champlain and St. Lawrence Railroad made the journey from Montreal to New York much faster.
Banking on a bold adventure
The Molson family’s contributions to Canadian banking began with John Molson acquiring an American bank and transforming it into the fully Canadian-owned Montreal Bank. In 1855, brothers William and John Molson, Jr. founded Molsons Bank to help a growing economy flourish. In subsequent years, younger generations of the Molson family would lead Molsons Bank, continuing the legacy of this bold venture into finance.
The birth of Molson Export
Molson Export entered the Canadian market in 1903 as a refreshing, well-balanced golden ale. With ingredients dating back to the foundation of the Molson Brewery, Export has a history as rich as its taste.
Molson Export entered the Canadian market in 1903 as a refreshing, well-balanced golden ale. With ingredients dating back to the foundation of the Molson Brewery, Export has a history as rich as its taste.
Molson starts the bottle return program
In 1927, Molson helped establish the first ever bottle-return program. It was an early step in our commitment towards sustainability and waste reduction that continues to this day.
Molson makes it count
In 1950, Molson installed Quebec’s largest functioning clock on the side of their Montreal factory. Visible from 12 km away, the Molson clock is a staple of the Montreal skyline, counting great moments in the city’s history for 68 years and counting. Now, the iconic hexagon shape of the clock has been integrated into the new Molson branding as a celebration of our heritage.
Molson partners with the Canadiens
In 1957, Molson began to pour our support into hockey by co-purchasing the Canadian Arena, which included the Montreal Forum and the Montreal Canadiens. This marked the beginning of a partnership that culminated with brothers Geoff, Andrew and Justin Molson taking full ownership of the iconic team in 2009.
Canada gets its first taste of Molson Canadian
Molson Canadian came to market in 1959, supported with a TV campaign that asked “What do you want from a lager?”, and a fresh-tasting beer that proved we had listened. It was the arrival of an iconic mainstay in the Canadian beer market.
Molson partners with the Maple Leafs
Molson’s ties with the NHL strengthened in 1973, when they began a partnership with the Toronto Maple Leafs that has been going strong for over 40 years and counting.
Founding the Red Leaf Project
As part of our effort to preserve Canada’s environment, Molson founded The Red Leaf Project. With a team of volunteers, we planted thousands of trees, collected more than hundreds of bags of litter and removed invasive species from parks across the country.
Introducing our Beer Fridge to the world
In 2015, red fridges filled with Molson Canadian started turning up around the world. As Canadian travelers and locals came together over rounds of Molson, they showed the world that Canadian pride goes a long way.
Committing to Canadian taste
Molson has always strived to use ingredients that reflect our Canadian pride, like select Prairie barley and Canadian water. In 2018, we started using select homegrown hops from Chilliwack, British Columbia, where we will be opening our newest brewery, adding to our list of Canadian breweries in St. John’s, Moncton, Montreal, and Toronto.

History of the site
Published on : October 02 2020
Last modified on : April 04 2023
In 1786, John Molson became sole proprietor of the brewery that had been built a few years earlier on the corner of Notre-Dame and Papineau streets. He had a new stone building erected and purchased two lots to extend his property from Notre-Dame Street to the St. Lawrence River in 1788 and 1789. Many buildings and residences were built on these lots, including John Molson’s home. Over the course of the 19th century, the buildings on the brewery property were significantly expanded and modified. The surrounding districts rapidly developed and the Molson family seized the opportunity to erect, on the rest of their property, new buildings, including a church, a college and housing, including the Molson Terrace, one of the first examples of row houses. In 1852, a major fire ravaged Montreal, destroying many of the dwellings as well as the brewery. However, the stone walls remained intact, which allowed the brewery to be rebuilt and brewing operations to resume.
During the 20th century, the site underwent major development. In 1913, a large stone building was erected, helping to unify the façade of the industrial complex. As of 1922, warehouses, a boiler house, grain dryers and fermentation rooms were built, as the Jacques-Cartier Bridge was taking shape right beside the complex. After 1945, more expansion work was done and a new brewing house was built in 1985, endowing the site with its present-day aesthetic.

Specific characteristics
The Molson Brewery is an industrial complex composed of an eclectic ensemble of buildings of varying forms and materials that reflect the different periods of its construction. The neo-Classical cut-stone façade situated near Papineau Avenue is the oldest part of the complex. Further to the west, the style is typical of the industrial period, first in stone, then in brick and, finally, in concrete. Today, certain elements, like the smokestack, the clock and the “Molson” lettering, on the Notre-Dame Street façade, are important landmarks on Montreal’s landscape, particularly from the Jacques-Cartier Bridge approach to the city.
In 2017, the Molson Brewery announced that it was moving its operations to Longueuil and leaving its Montreal complex behind. Concerned about the future of this emblematic site, the City commissioned the OCPM to hold public consultations on the Faubourgs sector with a view to developing a Special Planning Program (SPP) for Centre-Sud. The Montoni Group, in partnership with Selection Group, acquired the site and plans to develop a mixed ensemble based on the live-work-play principle, with residential units of varying typologies for different clienteles, businesses, offices as well as recreational equipment. It was agreed from the outset that the purchasing consortium will cede some of the land to be used to build a school, a community centre, a park, a riverside walkway and social housing.
Current events
The consortium, composed of Groupe Sélection, Montoni and the Fonds immobilier FTQ, issued a press release on March 9, 2022 to “present the first orientations of the redevelopment project of the former Molson brewery site”, more specifically concerning the Voltigeurs block, which includes the oldest buildings of the brewery complex. In February 2022, it submitted the project to the Ville-Marie borough’s Comité consultatif en urbanisme (CCU), which issued a favorable opinion on the project with certain conditions; the CCU’s opinion can be consulted in the minutes of the Ville-Marie borough council of March 8, 2022, on pages 1247 to 1250 . The consortium wishes to preserve and requalify 75% of the existing buildings, while the remaining 25% will be demolished to give the site a breath of fresh air through public spaces, visual openings and access to the river, as well as to improve links with neighbouring districts. Although the details concerning the new constructions in the Voltigeurs block will be known later, we already know that they will have a cascading profile around the Molson Tower in order to avoid an overly massive built environment.
As for the heritage component, two silos located in the eastern part of the site will be restored in order to be highlighted in the project. The clock and the Molson Tower sign will be removed, restored and stored for reinstallation in the new buildings. The chimney is also planned to remain intact, after being restored to its former glory. Finally, other heritage elements, such as the grey stone façade on Notre-Dame Street East, will be preserved, restored and integrated into the project.
In February 2023, new financial partners to the project are being considered . Indeed, Groupe Sélection, the main project holder, has been protected from its creditors since the fall of 2022. The project continues, but the controller of the file (PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC)) seeks to solidify the consortium (Groupe Sélection, 40%; Groupe Montoni, 30% and Fonds immobilier FTQ, 30%).
Actions of Héritage Montréal
Heritage Montréal is very attached to the Molson brewery, which constitutes a formidable historical witness for the metropolis in addition to being an important landmark in the Montreal landscape.
While the project is still in its infancy, and the development of the site should be completed around 2035, we have already raised a few concerns about the Molson Brewery’s industrial heritage. Since the site was sold to the promoters as is, its emblematic features, such as the smokestack and illuminated sign, should ideally be integrated into the project to preserve the memory of its industrial past and the important role that the Molson Brewery played in the development of the sector.
In 2018, the Molson Brewery industrial complex is the subject of one of our annual resolutions (2018-02) , calling for:
- That the project to reallocate the former Molson brewery, this iconic heritage complex of the metropolis and its commercial and industrial history, be exemplary and inspiring for current and future generations in order to constitute, not only a real estate success but above all , a model and a legacy worthy of this great secular company and its place in the urban and riverside landscape, and that a process of consultation and reflection be put in place to this end;
- That the City of Montreal, on the occasion of projects for the former Molson brewery, diligently adopt an effective strategy on industrial heritage, its enhancement and reallocation within the framework of the development of the city and its neighborhoods , taking into account the reflections carried out in Montreal since the 1983 international congress, of which Heritage Montreal was one of the organizers, but also achievements such as the conversion of Angus factories and foreign examples and international principles adopted by ICOMOS in 2011.
In 2019, as part of its annual ArchitecTours, Heritage Montréal presented the history of Montreal brewers to the public, highlighting in particular the importance of the Molson brewery in the economic and architectural landscape of the metropolis.
Heritage Montréal had the opportunity to talk to the Molson family about the importance of this industrial heritage and continues to put pressure on various actors so that the rehabilitation of this formidable site is worthy of the importance it is for the industrial memory of Montreal.

Centuries-old Molson brewery leaves Montreal site with hopes of maintaining heritage
Taps at the oldest brewery in North America will soon run dry as production of some of Canada’s most popular beers moves to the suburbs of Montreal.
Nestled along the banks of the St. Lawrence River, the landmark Molson Coors building on the Island of Montreal has gone up for sale, with production moving to Longueuil.
It's not known what will happen to the current site, but beer should start flowing from new taps on the South Shore in 2021, as a long standing family business goes through the change of an era.
The groundbreaking of the new $500-million facility was a nostalgic moment for Geoff Molson, who is proudly continuing his family's legacy seven generations later.
The vice chairman of the Molson Coors board said: “It's a big change because we've been there for so many years, but we're going to make sure that site is well taken care of as well and our heritage remains.
“A lot of people have said ‘Are you going to keep the clock?,” he said. “That's to be determined.”
It is hoped parts of the historic building, like the landmark clock, will be preserved and prominently displayed at the new location.
A buyer has yet to be found for one of Montreal's most storied buildings, but the company intends on keeping its administrative offices in the city.
Founded by English immigrant John Molson in 1786, the brewery merged with U.S.-based Coors to form Molson Coors Brewing Company in 2005.
The company says a new state-of-the art plant is needed to keep up with changing technologies and market demands.
“We want to be able to respond to changing consumer trends more quickly than we're able to do today,” said Frederic Landtmeters, chief executive of Molson Coors Canada.
“There is a huge shift to more flavors, malt-based beverages, we want to be able to be flexible there.”
The company is hoping for a quick sale of the 12-hectare lot on Notre-Dame St., aiming to bring in millions – or hundreds of millions – of dollars to build the new brewery in Longueuil.
Molson Coors spokesperson Francois Lefebvre previously told CTV News: "We're looking for a developer that will respect the heritage of the Molson family and the Molson brewery and also that will work in collaboration with the city of Montreal."

Molson to keep headquarters in Montreal as it moves brewery off-island
Molson Coors said it will maintain administrative offices on Notre-Dame St. E as brewing operations move to Longueuil

Molson Coors will keep its business offices in Montreal when its local brewing operations move to Longueuil in 2021, the company said on Wednesday.
The decision was made in order to maintain a link with the Notre-Dame St. E. site the company has occupied since 1786, it said in a release.

The decision came after negotiations with the city, it said.
In a release, Mayor Valérie Plante praised Molson’s plan to keep administrative offices in Montreal, saying it would maintain good jobs in the city and become a focal point for the redevelopment of the area.

In November, Molson Coors said it would be moving its brewing operations to the South Shore borough of St-Hubert because it would be too complicated to modernize the historic Montreal brewery.
The new facility, which has an estimated price tag of $500 million, will also allow the company to combine its distribution and brewing operations, which are currently at separate facilities.
The company said it has released an agreement in principle with the city for the future development of the Notre-Dame site and that the land will be put up for sale in the fall.

Montreal's Molson brewery to make way for new residential neighbourhood
Sprawling site to integrate housing, commercial space and community infrastructure billed as 'historic'.
Social Sharing
The landmark Molson brewery, a looming presence on Montreal's waterfront for more than two centuries, could soon be transformed into a neighbourhood with as many as 4,000 homes.
Mayor Valérie Plante called the proposed deal with a consortium of developers "historic."
Plante said the developers won't get the green light without first ensuring space is set aside for a school, community centre, public park, waterfront promenade and 200 social housing units.
"When we think about the city of the future, we want it like that, exactly like that," Plante said at Wednesday's meeting of the city's executive committee.
The sprawling site, the equivalent of nearly 11 CFL football fields, runs north of the St. Lawrence River to Notre-Dame Street, between Panet Street and Papineau Avenue.
It is part of what will be dubbed the Quartier des faubourgs, which also includes the new Maison Radio-Canada building going up just north of the Molson site and the existing tower, which is to be transformed into new offices and housing.
Under the agreement, the consortium of Groupe Sélection and Groupe Montoni will acquire part of the land, while giving the rest to Montreal for development into public infrastructure.
The deal still needs to be approved by city council. Then, as with any construction project of such magnitude, it must go through a series of legal hurdles in the coming years before reaching fruition.
The estimated completion date is 2035.

Molson is in the process of moving from the site of Canada's oldest brewery to Longueuil over the next five years. Discussions between Molson-Coors and Groupe Sélection began several months before Montreal got involved.
Nothing in the presentation made to the city's executive committee indicates the section of the brewery that opened in 1786 will be preserved. City officials declined interview requests Wednesday.
Park with a waterfront view
Montreal will use a portion of the city's land for a new park with a view of the river, the city's director of institutional services, Benoit Dagenais, told the executive committee Wednesday.
Dagenais said the park will be larger than the minimum required by the bylaw governing new housing projects. It includes a half-kilometre-long linear promenade that is to connect Notre-Dame Street to the park.
By 2027, the city is also planning to purchase about half a hectare of the site for $6.7 million. Describing it as a "civic and habitation pole," this section will be divided into two parts.
- Sale of Molson brewery site could mean change on the horizon for Centre-Sud area
A portion of that land will be set aside for a school and other social uses, the document says, while the rest of that section will be used for social housing, to be managed by the SHDM, Montreal's housing corporation.
