How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Universal Studios Hollywood

Here's everything you need to know about visiting Universal Studios Hollywood, from the best rides and restaurants to seasonal events and more.

when in hollywood visit universal studios

Did you know that in the heart of Los Angeles you can sip on Butterbeer , come face to face with terrifying dinosaurs, and have an epic journey with adorable Minions? No acting experience required.

Universal Studios Hollywood is a theme park like no other, connected to a working movie and television production lot that's been around since the early 20 th century. The film studio first got into attractions with a tram tour in 1964 but has since evolved and grown into a bonafide theme park with thrilling rides, live entertainment, immersive lands, and thematically pleasing (and delicious) foods.

The theme park may be compact compared to its East Coast sibling, but it makes up for its smaller stature with top-notch attractions. Unlike other parks, it offers a welcomed level of flexibility requiring minimal pre-planning for visitors, appealing to both solo travelers and families alike. The park can be accomplished in one day for those short on time but looking to get a taste of what Tinseltown's only theme park has to offer.

Universal Studios Hollywood Ticket Types and Prices

The ultimate Hollywood experience is surprisingly more affordable than you may have imagined. One-day general admission begins at $109, with two-day general admission beginning at $149. Using a dynamic ticket pricing system, the cost depends on the date of your visit, with weekends and holidays tiered higher. Front gate purchases will cost significantly more, and advanced online purchases are suggested.

Universal Express offers expedited access to almost every attraction and show with ticket packages beginning at $189. Guided VIP experiences begin at $349 and offer small group expedited access to rides and complimentary refreshments.

Luckily, when you inevitably fall in love with the park, it won't require a mortgage payment to visit again. Universal Studios Hollywood has one of the most affordable annual pass programs in the country, with the value of your park ticket able to be used towards the upgrade. Perks include free parking and discounts on food and merchandise, with the pass program starting at $159 for California residents and $199 for general guests.

Universal Studios Hollywood Layout

Comprised of two different levels, the upper lot and the lower lot, Universal Studios Hollywood is one of the easiest parks to navigate for first-time visitors. Guests enter on the upper lot and a series of escalators, known as the Starway, travel a quarter mile down to the lower lot.

The upper lot is the largest, comprised of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, The Simpsons -inspired Springfield U.S.A., the World-Famous Studio Tour, live shows, and more. The lower lot is home to Revenge of The Mummy — The Ride, TRANSFORMERS: The Ride 3-D, Jurassic World —The Ride, and several eateries and shops.

Universal Studios Hollywood Rides

Universal Studios Hollywood has a little something for everyone, from thrill junkies to young children, with attractions featuring your favorite characters, movies, and television series.

The park has experienced a period of growth over the last decade, including the milestone addition of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. While the land is smaller than its counterpart in Florida, it brings along its greatest hits, including e-ticket attraction, Harry Potter & The Forbidden Journey, and the popular wand-choosing experience, Ollivanders.

The newest attraction, Secret Life of Pets: Off The Leash! (exclusive to the Hollywood park), opened in 2021 and is a marvel of a dark ride seamlessly mixing industry-leading screen-based technology with animatronics. Located on the upper lot's Manhattan-inspired streets, the colorful area immerses guests in the loved movie franchise through playful character interactions.

On the lower lot, Jurassic World — The Ride is a water-based attraction that shines as one of the biggest thrills offered with pioneering feats in audio-animatronics since its refurbishment in 2021.

The World-Famous Studio Tour is a unique 60-minute journey that includes behind-the-scenes access to working sets while intermixing themed attraction experiences , all while sitting aboard a tram. With ever-changing production schedules, no two rides on this iconic attraction are ever the same. Through the theme park's commitment to becoming more environmentally friendly, the trams are being given an upgrade and will soon utilize all electric vehicles.

Other rides include a family-friendly Minions attraction, a Harry Potter -themed coaster for all ages, and interactive playscapes.

The first Super Nintendo World in the United States is slated to open in 2023, bringing new attractions.

Where to Eat at Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood's dining options are quick-service, but that doesn't mean you'll sacrifice taste thanks to multitudes of globally inspired bites served in highly themed locations.

The popular eatery, Three Broomsticks, transports guests to the fantastical world of Harry Potter inside a dining hall straight out of the blockbuster franchise. British delicacies are the menu's focus, with traditional dishes like fish and chips and a standout English breakfast. No meal is complete without fan-favorite Butterbeer ice cream.

The whimsically themed Super Silly Fun Land houses a Minions-themed cafe with approachable eats, like a homestyle grilled cheese and tomato soup. In Springfield, beloved eateries from The Simpsons come to life, including Krusty Burger and Lard Lad (serving up giant pink donuts). On the lower lot, Jurassic Café offers unique bites, like slow-roasted mojo pork, and it is steps away from Isla Nu-Bar, a tiki outpost pouring tropical cocktails.

For those looking to imbibe during their park visit, there's no shortage of highly themed bars, including Moe's Tavern, Hog's Head in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and Mulligan's Irish Pub.

Those seeking a caffeine fix should avoid Starbucks and head straight to the French Street Bistro, a charming hidden gem with coffee drinks, breakfast, and snacks served throughout the day.

Universal CityWalk Hollywood

The property's dining and entertainment district, CityWalk, is adjacent to the theme park, where you can find the destination's table-service dining options. NBC Sports Bar & Grill is your go-to spot for sporting events and offers surprisingly excellent pub food, while Antojitos Cocina Mexicano has a wonderful patio and sprawling bar with Mexican eats and handcrafted cocktails. For casual options, the recently opened Chick Chick Chicken dishes out authentic Nashville-style hot chicken while the legendary Pink's Hot Dogs has an easy-to-access outpost of their iconic eatery.

No park ticket is required to visit CityWalk.

When to Visit Universal Studios Hollywood

Given its location in sunny Southern California, visitors can enjoy pleasant weather almost year-round. Weekdays between holiday seasons are the best time to visit for shorter lines at attractions and restaurants.

Visits during the theme park's two annual events, Halloween Horror Nights and Grinchmas, tend to be the most crowded. Halloween Horror Nights, a separately ticketed event, is the country's leading haunt event where Universal's soundstages are transformed into frightening walk-through experiences themed to the biggest horror franchises. Grinchmas, included with general theme park admission, sees gleeful holiday-inspired upgrades. Universal Express proves to be invaluable during these times.

How to Get There and Where To Stay Near Universal Studios

Universal Studios Hollywood is located in the heart of Los Angeles, approximately 20 minutes from nearby Hollywood Burbank Airport and 40 minutes from Los Angeles International Airport.

Daily parking rates for theme park visitors begin at $30 if entering the lot before 5 p.m. For those visiting a full-service restaurant at CityWalk, valet parking is available for up to 2.5 hours for $10.

Unlike Orlando's version, they do not have on-site, Universal-operated hotels, but hotel partners. Hilton Universal City & Sheraton Universal Hotel are located within walking distance of the park, with guests receiving perks like complimentary shuttles and discounted ticket packages.

Entertainment at the Theme Park

It's of no surprise that entertainment is a cornerstone of the theme park, including some of the most impressive displays of free-roaming characters that interact with guests, like Beetlejuice, Dracula, and Lucille Ball.

The theme park's live shows also shine, like "Waterworld: A Live Sea War Spectacular." Inspired by the cult-favorite film, the stunt show is celebrating over 25 years and uses actual pieces from the movie's sets along with large-scale pyrotechnics and captivating live actors. Other shows include the hilarious Universal's Animal Actors featuring real-life, Hollywood-trained pets.

Their nighttime offerings may be more scaled back than other parks, but the Harry Potter -themed evening spectacular is worth staying for. "Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle" combines music, lights, and projections all set to the stunning backdrop of the towering school of wizardry.

Universal Studios Hollywood Planning Tips

Download the official app, where you can quickly access the most up-to-date wait times, showtimes, maps, and more.

Many guests enter and begin their day at the upper lot's attractions. Instead, work backward by beginning at the lower lot to possibly relieve wait times.

The World-Famous Studio Tour typically embarks on its last ride of the day over an hour before park closing, so it is best to plan ahead for this experience.

15 Universal Studios Hollywood Tips You NEED To Read (2023)

when in hollywood visit universal studios

Sharing is caring!

Visiting a theme park like Universal Studios Hollywood is so much fun and exciting but it can be incredibly stressful – and disappointing – if you go in with no plan. After reading this article, you’ll understand where to save and where to splurge and how to maximize your time at Universal!

These are my favorite Universal Hollywood tips that you need for an amazing trip! I’ll cover everything starting with considerations as you book your trip to Universal Studios Hollywood to how to save money and maximize your experience in the park.

Where to stay near Universal Studios Hollywood

when in hollywood visit universal studios

Unlike Universal Studios Orlando, there are no “on-property” hotels at Universal Studios Hollywood. Some hotels are closer than others, but you won’t find official perks like early entry, Express Pass, ticket discounts or anything else. While that may seem frustrating at first, it also means that you have complete choice among hotels near Universal Studios without feeling like you have to spend a ton of money. Here are a few great choices for where to stay near Universal Studios Hollywood – including their pros and cons.

Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City

when in hollywood visit universal studios

And the award for closest hotel to Universal Studios Hollywood goes to… Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City ! It’s just a ~10 minute walk to the theme park gate, though it requires some stairs that may be challenging for those with limited mobility. The hotel also runs a free scheduled shuttle to Universal Studios Hollywood if that’s a better fit for your needs.

The Hilton is a very nice hotel, with a great pool and on-site dining as well, but it’s also one of the most expensive hotels near Universal Studios Hollywood. Be sure to compare prices at Hilton’s website and Expedia to make sure you’re getting a good deal. You can also consider booking this hotel as a package with theme park tickets and your rental car through Undercover Tourist , which we’ve used before to save tons of money.

You do have the option to pay for an upgraded theme park view, but personally I don’t think it’s worth the money since there aren’t night time fireworks at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Sheraton Universal Hotel

when in hollywood visit universal studios

Just a few more minutes away on foot gets you to the Sheraton Universal Hotel . The hotel interior is a little nicer than the Hilton next door and it’s often a little less expensive, but the trade off is a slightly longer walk to the gate and slightly smaller rooms unless you upgrade.

In addition to Expedia , check prices on Marriott’s website and through Undercover Tourist to make sure you get a great deal!

The Garland

when in hollywood visit universal studios

For a more boutique hotel near Universal Studios Hollywood, check out The Garland . It’s just a mile away in North Hollywood, though it’s definitely not walkable given the freeway and hills. There’s a trolly that runs hourly if you’re looking for a way to get to Universal for free.

Inside the mission-style building, you’ll find a beautiful blending of SoCal craftsman architecture with Mid-Century Modern design touches. The hotel offers quite a few different room types including standard queen-queen rooms, rooms with junior bunk beds in alcoves for early bed times, and even family suites with bunk beds. It’s even an option if you need a pet-friendly hotel near Universal Studios Hollywood.

There are also on-site activities available to keep you busy when you aren’t out exploring. There’s a lovely pool and a family jacuzzi, plus a rotating calendar of activities that includes lawn games, local food pop ups, guided tours and hikes in the area and more.

It’s easy to book The Garland on its own via Expedia, which shows you the details of all the different room types including suites. If you’re looking for a Universal Studios Hollywood vacation package to save money, check out Get Away Today (use code ‘VOYAGE’ to save $10) and Undercover Tourist for major savings.

Magic Castle Hotel

when in hollywood visit universal studios

Are you looking for where to stay near Universal Studios Hollywood on a budget with a big family? Do you like fun? If you answered yes to either of those questions, check out the Magic Castle Hotel . It’s just a 10 minute drive to the park and you can even walk to the Hollywood Bowl along with other area attractions.

Magic Castle Hotel isn’t fancy, but it has a lot going for it. This used to be an apartment building, so the rooms are huge – most are designated as suites but are really one- or two-bedroom apartments with full kitchens so you can save money on meals. Speaking of saving money on meals, breakfast is included daily and even includes a magician on weekends! Plus there’s an unlimited supply of free snacks and popsicles out on the pool deck.

Oh, and they’ll even do your laundry for free.

Even with all of these amazing amenities (including bargain-basement parking fees), Magic Castle Hotel is reasonably priced if you have a large family or need more space than a traditional hotel room offers. It’s easy to see why it’s considered the most kid-friendly hotel near Universal Studios Hollywood! Check prices for your stay .

How to get discounted tickets to Universal Studios Hollywood

when in hollywood visit universal studios

Tickets to Universal Studios Hollywood are expensive, ranging from $109 to $149 online and even more if you purchase in person (with the risk of ticket being sold out). I strongly recommend that you buy your tickets in advance online to save money and ensure that you’ll be able to visit the park! There are a few ways to get discounted tickets to Universal Studios Hollywood:

  • Undercover Tourist – We’ve used authorized ticket seller before and had a seamless experience. They sell Universal Studios tickets at a discount of several dollars each. But the real savings come when you bundle your rental car: you can get up to 50% off your car rental! We’ve done this before and it saved us $200 on the car. If you have an account set up with the rental car company, you can even reach out before your trip to link it to your reservation to make pick up faster.
  • Get Away Today – Similar to Undercover Tourist, GAT is a big player in the authorized ticket market. They offer discounted packages for tickets + hotel, plus you can save an extra $10 with coupon ‘VOYAGE’.
  • Get Your Guide – For our most recent visit, we actually booked our tickets through tour marketplace Get Your Guide. You can buy tickets from them just as you would from any other retailer. Why did I buy from a 3rd party seller? I only needed tickets for this visit, and I was able to cash back through TopCashback ! If you aren’t familiar with TopCashback, they provide a percentage of your purchase back at nearly every retailer you can think of. I use them

Universal Studios Hollywood tips for an amazing visit

when in hollywood visit universal studios

  • Check the calendar for your time visiting in LA. Generally Universal Studios tickets are date-specific and they’re priced based on projected crowds and park hours. But those hours can vary dramatically: during busy season Universal Studios hours can be 8am to 10pm, while on weekdays or when there’s an evening event they can be as short as 10am-6pm.
  • Know how much of Universal Studios you want to visit. If you want to hit every single popular ride at Universal Studios Hollywood, a day with limited hours may not be enough time. How much time to spend at Universal Studios Hollywood completely depends on whether or not you want to do all of the rides and attractions and how busy the park is.

when in hollywood visit universal studios

  • Download the Universal Studios Hollywood app while you’re planning to familiarize yourself with ride options and wait times.
  • Decide if the Universal Express Pass is worth it for you. In my experience, if you’re visiting Universal Studios when it isn’t a school break or a weekend you can save your money. As of this writing, Express Pass costs an extra $90+ per person and doesn’t even include the most popular ride in the park! But if you’re visiting during summer or spring break and want to hit every ride it may be worth the cost to avoid spending an hour or two in line for popular rides. This guide is really helpful for deciding whether or not to purchase it.

when in hollywood visit universal studios

  • Plan to arrive at the Universal Studios Hollywood parking structure about 30-40 minutes before opening time. You’ll need to wait in line to pay, park and then walk through CityWalk. That process took us 25 minutes on an extremely quiet day. Alternatively, if you take Uber you’ll be dropped off righ near the park entrance. Paying up for premium parking (an extra $20-40) also gets you closer to the gate.
  • Consider upgrading to Super Nintendo World “early access” at Universal Studios Hollywood. The new Mario Kart ride is absolutely amazing and is not part of Express Pass. But if you pay the (more reasonable) price to get in an hour early, you can enjoy Mario Kart before everyone else with a very short line and then quickly hop to the other popular rides while everyone else dashes down to Super Nintendo World! Several of the other popular rides are also nearby in the lower lot, so you’ll even have an extra 10-15 minutes after the regular opening time before other guests arrive.

when in hollywood visit universal studios

  • You may need to join the “virtual line” for Super Nintendo World when you enter the park if it’s busy. You can’t do it before you enter the park and it doesn’t get you on Mario Kart any faster, but just helps with crowd control while the World is still at peak popularity.
  • Universal Studios Hollywood has two sections, the Upper Lot and Lower Lot. You’ll enter in the Upper Lot, which has Hogsmeade (Harry Potter), Krustyland (The Simpsons), the Waterworld live stunt show and most of the attractions for younger kids including Dispicable Me Minions Mayhem (one of our family’s favorites), Kung Fu Panda, Secret Life of Pets and Super Silly Fun Land. The Lower Lot is home to the new Super Nintendo World along with Jurassic World (and the Dino play area), The Mummy and Transformers. A series of steep escalators connects the two sections, with an alternative tram option for those with mobility challenges. Expect to spend 5-10 minutes getting between the Upper and Lower Lots.

when in hollywood visit universal studios

  • Choose your dining wisely. We tried out some of the Universal Studios themed dining options in Orlando and can’t say we were very impressed with the quality for the exorbitant price so we avoided the park food in Hollywood almost entirely. But my sources tell me that Cocina Mexicana and Jurassic Cafe are decent options that won’t cost an arm and a leg. On a busy day you can order your meal through the app and just go pick it up at the counter when it’s ready – that can be a huge time saver.

when in hollywood visit universal studios

  • One of the best snacks at Universal Studios Hollywood is (obviously) butter beer! The iced/slushie version is perfect for a hot day. Yes it’s almost $10 per cup, but it’s worth it. Two cups is enough for our family of four to share.
  • If you want to eat at Toadstool Cafe (which we’ve heard is cute but terrible), scan the waitlist QR code at the entrance to Super Nintendo World first thing in the morning. We visited on a very light day and the entire day’s waitlist was full 90 minutes after park opening. Insider tip: if Super Nintendo World is on a virtual line, a Toadstool Cafe reservation will get you in.

when in hollywood visit universal studios

  • To fully experience Super Nintendo World or the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, prepare to pay up for an accessory – a power up band for Nintendo ($40) or a wand at Ollivanders in Hogsmeade ($40-60). In our experience the wands from Orlando work in Hollywood, but it seemed like many of the interactive elements didn’t function as smoothly as we expected. On the other hand, the power up bands we purchased worked perfectly and unlocked so many cool experiences in Super Nintendo World – plus they continue to be useful as amiibo with compatible games for Nintendo Switch. My kids specifically recommend using them for Super Smash Bros , Super Mario Odyssey , Mario Kart 8 and Captain Toad Treasure Tracker . Winning the “mini games” within Super Nintendo world earns keys that link to your power up band; once you have three keys, you can participate in the final boss showdown in Bowser Jr’s castle! No power up band = no boss battle.

when in hollywood visit universal studios

  • The Waterworld live stunt show at Universal Studios Hollywood is pretty darn impressive! It only runs a few times per day so be sure to set an alarm to get there about 5 minutes before showtime on a quiet day or as much as 15-30 minutes early on a busy day. Choose your seats wisely – the lower seats in the green zone get soaked while the higher seats stay dry. There’s no wrong answer though, as sometimes the splash zone a nice way to cool off!
  • Consider a change of clothes or a swimsuit for young kids. Super Silly Fun Land has a pretty amazing water play structure full of dump buckets and sprayers, and it’s hard for kids to resist on a hot day.
  • Some of the more intense rides require you to put your belongings in a locker. The lockers are free, but you can’t have a backpack on The Mummy or Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.

What to bring to Universal Studios Hollywood

when in hollywood visit universal studios

Overall a day at Universal Studios Hollywood isn’t nearly as intense as visiting Disneyland or other large theme parks. But there are a few things to bring with you to make your day awesome.

  • External battery pack. Between all the photos and videos you’ll take plus checking wait times in the Universal Studios Hollywood app, you’ll probably chew through your phone’s battery faster than yoh think – and at the end of the day you need a little juice for Uber or GPS navigation back to your hotel! I love this battery pack because it plugs straight into my phone without needing any cables or adapters. There’s an Android version as well.
  • Versatile daypack. We use this backpack for theme parks and it’s perfect for us! There’s plenty of space for snacks, water, dry shirts, souvenirs and more (it’s just long enough for an Elderwand box, in case you were curious). There’s even a built-in rain cover on the off-chance of a shower. It pairs with this belt bag , which is great for easy access to small items or if you and your travel buddy need to split up for part of the day.
  • Insulated water bottle or Camelbak . Universal Studios Hollywood has tons of places to refill your water bottle – even in the middle of some of the longer lines! I love this insulated water bottle thanks to its ergonomic shape. We’ve also tucked a Camelbak bladder into the daypack I mentioned above, which is a great solution if you don’t want to refill often. You can even fill it most of the way with ice in the morning.
  • Comfortable shoes. There’s no faster way to ruin a day at Universal Studios Hollywood than by wearing uncomfortable shoes. I opted for this pair and was able to go go go non-stop!
  • Sunscreen stick. Be sure to bring sunscreen with you for Universal Studios Hollywood – there’s plenty of waiting in line out in the sun. I love that I can fly with this sunscreen stick without worrying about liquid restrictions. It’s compact enough to fit anywhere!
  • Sunglasses. No matter what you plan to do, be sure to include a great pair of shades on your LA packing list .

Universal Studios Hollywood FAQs

In my experience one day is usually enough for Universal Studios Hollywood unless you’re visiting on a short day and want to ride every single ride.

when in hollywood visit universal studios

Unlike Orlando, there’s really no such thing as “on property” in Hollywood. There are several hotels in walking distance that you can consider but they don’t get any extra theme park benefits.

Where is Universal Studios Hollywood?

Universal Studios Hollywood is located in Universal City, about 3.5 miles away from Hollywood in Los Angeles. Vacationers often add a visit to Universal Studios Hollywood to their Southern California trip.

Universal Studios Hollywood front entrance with bronze statue in fountain

There are a few things to know about the area (click through these links for tips on each location):

Disneyland – located in Anaheim, about 36 miles away.

Knott’s Berry Farm – located in Buena Park, about 32 miles away.

LEGOLAND California – located in Carlsbad, about 100 miles away.

San Diego – located about 130 miles south. Includes several popular theme parks including two near the downtown area, SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo . The sprawling San Diego Safari Park is in north county.

Driving Tips to Universal Studios Hollywood

You’ll want to avoid rush hour traffic by driving before 6 am or after 9 pm at night. Your best bet is booking a hotel nearby to completely skip freeway driving in Los Angeles on the day of your visit.

San Diego theme parks will take you nearly 3 hours drive. The drive to the Anaheim & Buena Park theme parks will be over an hour. Consider renting your own vehicle and not relying on ride share.

Another option is to use Karmel Shuttle for transportation between Anaheim hotels and Universal Studios Hollywood. These private passenger vans hold up to 9 riders for one price and offer “door-to-door” service.

How is Parking at Universal Studios Hollywood?

Universal Studios Hollywood offers several levels of parking with costs ranging from $30-70 for a full day. There are discounted rates for arrival after 5 pm.

During our visits, we used General Parking which put us inside a garage at the far end of CityWalk. The trek through this outdoor shopping and dining center took about 15 minutes to get to the front gate.

There is also a dedicated “Uber Zone” with a location for ride share pick-up or drop off.

Are There Security Checks at Universal Studios Hollywood?

All Southern California theme parks have some sort of security check before guests are allowed to enter the park. This can include bag inspection, metal detectors and more.

At Universal Studios Hollywood guests won’t be standing in super-long lines while security guards unzip every pocket in your bag. Instead your belongs will be scanned through an X-ray machine!

Simply place your bags onto a conveyor belt, just like at the airport. Bags are still inspected but not opened unless something suspicious is noted.

All visitors still walk through a metal detector after removing items from their pockets. My family was able to pass through security in a quick 5 minutes, even on a busy weekend!

What Should I Bring to Universal Studios?

Just like packing for any theme park, assess your day’s needs. You’ll want to pack in anything that you don’t want to have to purchase inside the park.

This includes sunscreen, sun hat, jacket, snacks, cell phone charger, charging cord and a water bottle. Consider a compact backpack or purse that will fit into a small locker (more on why that’s important later).

Packing a Day Bag for Universal Hollywood

I packed everything in my Designer Park Co. bag for the day. I was able to easily fit 2 changes of clothing, sunscreens, wallet, phone, and more into this convenient backpack. Use code REWRITTEN for 10% off your order!

While vaccinations are no longer required for the L.A. theme park, masks are still highly recommended for indoor attractions. There are also lots of hand sanitizer stations located in the park, so it’s not necessary to bring your own.

If you’re using your cell phone to take photos and access the Universal Studios Hollywood app consider bringing an external charger. The Fuel Rod is convenient, compact and can be purchased ahead of time at a discount.

There are Fuel Rod stations located around the theme park. Simply drop your used charger into the machine and receive a new Fuel Rod to recharge your phone!

Is Outside Food Allowed at Universal Studios Hollywood?

Most area theme parks do allow their guests to bring in snacks and food with a few restrictions. Items should not be in glass containers and food needs to be packed inside a backpack or soft-sided container.

Absolutely no hard coolers and nothing larger than 8.5″. Fast food is usually not permitted. And of course, no alcohol or illegal items.

Consider packing in small water bottles, as well as snacks like dried fruit, nuts, and firm crackers, granola bars and pretzels.

How Many Days Should You Spend at Universal Studios Hollywood?

While three days (or more) is the usual recommendation for Disneyland , Universal Studios Hollywood could be experienced in a single day.

There are a few caveats to this, including arriving at opening, moving briskly and staying until park closing. For a more leisurely visit, you’ll want a multi-day ticket.

During our first trip to Universal Studios Hollywood, we visited on a Saturday during the holiday season. The park was very busy, with most ride waits an hour plus. We spent 9 hours at Universal Studios Hollywood and were able to go on all the rides except one. We also skipped most of the shows.

The next time we went to Universal Hollywood we used the Universal Express Pass. This shortened the wait time in line considerably. There are definitely ways to take advantage of the time crunch so keep reading!

Universal Studios Hollywood in One Day

If you want to visit Universal Studios Hollywood in one day, I’d recommend first that you schedule a visit during a non-peak time. This would include not planning a visit during holiday weeks, summer break or any days when kids are out of school.

Signage and red carpet entrance at Universal Studios Hollywood

A mid-week visit is optimal. But then, you’ll also be dealing with L.A. traffic! Consider booking a nearby hotel to stay overnight. Then either walk to the park or take advantage of a free hotel shuttle. This will get you to the front gates early.

I’ll share more about the best area hotels near Universal Studios later in this article.

Navigating Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood is over 400 acres, with most of this area part of the working studio. The theme park itself is reasonably walkable with attractions on two levels. The levels are divided by a series of long escalators. Plan to take about a 10 minute ride to get to the next level.

Escalators from lower lot at Universal Studios Hollywood

Strollers are permitted on the escalators, but kids need to be removed before riding. There are also elevators. Guests who have issue with standing for long periods, and those in wheelchairs or motorized vehicles should use the elevators. Or course you could always get a workout in and take the stairs!

There are four rides in the lower lot, with a Jurassic Park-themed ride newly opened. There are 6 rides on the upper level. Other attractions at Universal Studios Hollywood include kid-friendly play areas and live action shows.

Consider starting and finishing one level before moving to the next. Another good option would be to do some of the upper lot attractions, complete all of the lower lot, then finish the day in the upper section.

Using the Universal Hollywood App

Download the Universal Hollywood app to your smart phone before your visit. Use of the app while in the parks will help you more easily navigate and maximize time.

Create an account before your visit and add purchased Universal Studios ticket codes into the app. In-app features include an interactive map, show times, dining, and ride details. The map is important when looking for dining menus, restrooms and guest services.

The app is also where you’ll find the Virtual Line experience. More details on this important line skipping feature later, keep reading.

Can You Get a Front of the Line Pass at Universal Studios Hollywood?

Yes, there are ways to skip the lines at Universal Studios Hollywood! To maintain the perks of quick line access for guests who purchase there are only a limited number of these tickets sold each day. These are the two paid line-jumping options for Universal Studios Hollywood:

Universal Studios Hollywood’s Express Pass

Universal Express Pass allows guests to bypass the queue once for each ride, attraction and seated show for that day. Universal Express Pass was previously called the “Front of Line Pass”.

These are the participating attractions on the Express Ticket:

  • Despicable Me Minion Mayhem
  • Flight of the Hippogriff

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey

  • Jurassic World – The Ride
  • Kung Fu Panda Adventure
  • Revenge of the Mummy – The Ride
  • Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash
  • Studio Tour
  • The Simpsons Ride
  • SUPER NINTENDO WORLD access when reservations are required (but does not include ride access to Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge)
  • Transformers: The Ride-3D

How Does Universal Express Work?

The additional cost is around $80 above the cost of your regular ticket. I recommend purchasing a discounted ticket to Universal Studios Hollywood , then upgrade to Universal Express after entry into the theme park.

Here’s an extra time-saving tip: There’s a guest relations location just inside the park gates to upgrade to Universal Express. Don’t stand in this guest services line! There are additional places to upgrade your ticket as you walk into the park that have much shorter wait times.

Universal Express tickets

You’ll receive an actual paper ticket to use for accessing the Universal Express lines. This ticket will be scanned by the employee at the entrance of the line and sometimes again further in the queue. Store your ticket in a safe place to avoid losing it or getting it wet.

A lanyard with a plastic cardholder sleeve is a great idea to keep the Universal Express tickets close at hand.

Universal Express Pass Review

My family used the Universal Express during our visit and I’d like to share our honest thoughts about this “line skipping” service. Without a doubt, the Universal Express Pass is an excellent upgrade if you dislike waiting in lines.

My husband can’t handle long wait times AT ALL. He was thrilled with how quickly we were able to get to the front of the line with Universal Express.

Yes, the cost may be prohibitive to those on a tighter budget. But we found the added charge to be well worth it in the way of saving time and stress!

My family visited on an extremely busy and hot summer day when wait times for some attractions were nearly 2 hours. We never waited longer than 15 minutes in line for any given ride using the Universal Express pass.

Universal Studios Hollywood VIP Experience

For the ultimate ticket splurge, the Universal Studios VIP Experience is the way to go. VIP receive valet parking and VIP entry to the park. From there is just gets better!

Guests who pay for this feature get unlimited express ride access, the best seats at shows, and exclusive back lot access. There’s also excellent VIP lounge access with snacks and refreshments, a gourmet meal in the private VIP dining room, and an expert guided tour.

The VIP Experience ticket is also the only way to skip the line for the newest ride, Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge in SUPER NINTENDO WORLD.

The Universal Hollywood VIP Experience has a cost of $417+ that includes one day admission.

Universal Hollywood Virtual Line Experience

Select rides and attractions feature a “virtual line” allowing guests to skip the wait in queue. This free feature is a great way to explore more of the park, without the long wait times. Here’s how it works:

  • Once you have scanned into the theme park, tap the Virtual Line Venues in the app to begin the process.
  • Enable push notifications on your device in the settings. This will allow you to receive notice when Virtual Line pass is valid.
  • Select a return time for a particular attraction.
  • Set group sizes to get separate return times for different people in your party. You may include up to 10 guests in one group.
  • Check in to the app frequently. Additional Virtual Line return times are often added later in the day.
  • Check in at the attraction entrance during the designated reservation window. Your entire group must be present. You’ll need to show the QR code for entry.
  • When the return time has passed, book another Virtual Line reservation!

What Are the Best Things at Universal Studios Hollywood?

From movie-themed attractions to high speed thrills and special effects shows, there’s plenty for all at this film-making theme park. The following sections will discuss the individual guests from toddlers to adults and what attractions are the best for each.

What Are the Thrill Rides at Universal Studios Hollywood?

Rides at Universal Studios Hollywood are exciting with hi-tech flight simulation and special effects. There are height restrictions to be aware of, which I’ve noted next to each attraction.

In addition, there may be extra requirements in which a “supervising companion” (aged 14+) must accompany a child on the attraction.

Jurassic World - The Ride showing boat splashing into the water at Universal Studios Hollywood

If you have a kid who scares easily, you should use caution on some of these attractions. The mild rides might be better suited for nervous children. I’ve made some notes next to each below:

  • Revenge of the Mummy   (48″ height requirement)- High-speed indoor roller coaster with scary scenes and mummies.
  • Transformers: The Ride – 3D (40″ height requirement)- This motion simulator car ride immerses you into a war zone with Transformers working to save the world.
  • Jurassic World – The Ride (42″ height requirement) – Boat ride through an immersive land of scary, realistic dinosaurs with a steep watery drop.
  • Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey (48″ height requirement) – Intense motion simulator that moves your ride vehicle (a broomstick!) with the action.
  • The Simpsons Ride (40″ height requirement) – Another motion simulator that mimics a roller coaster with the addition of height.

Mild Thrill Attractions at Universal Studios Hollywood

It’s not all high intensity at Universal Studios Hollywood. Fortunately there are some family-friendly attractions that younger kids can enjoy as well. Height restrictions may still apply.

  • Flight of the Hippogriff (39″ height requirement) – A mild and short roller coaster for families in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter area.
  • The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash (34″ height requirement) – Based upon the movie series, guests join the animal characters on a traditional “dark ride” through New York City.
  • Despicable Me Minion Mayhem (40″ height requirement) – A motion simulator similar in style to The Simpsons Ride with mist and lighting effects as well as 3-D.
  • Studio Tour (no height restriction) – Some of the features including King Kong may be frightening to young kids.
  • Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge (40″ height requirement) – Compete with other riders in this interactive ride that takes you into the game.

What Can Babies & Toddlers Do at Universal Studios Hollywood?

Most of the height requirements are 40″+. Based on these height restrictions, I didn’t bring my 2-year old with us to Universal Studios Hollywood during our first family visit.

We returned for a second visit when she was 6 years old and there was much more for her to enjoy at the older age.

Two children standing next to a Minion statue outside Super Silly Fun Land at Universal Studios Hollywood

There aren’t really too many attractions that are appealing to younger kids. On that end, the same could be said for expectant mothers. Many of the rides, including the “mild thrills” have jerky movements. Use caution and heed the posted warnings for pregnancy on each attraction.

Here’s what there is to do with a baby or toddler at Universal Hollywood:

Kid’s Play Areas

  • DinoPlay (under 48″ height requirement) – Dinosaur themed kid’s play area. Ideal active play section for younger kids when adults are with older kids on Jurassic World – The Ride .
  • Super Silly Fun Land (under 48″ height requirement) – Inspired by the Despicable Me movie, this outdoor play area has water features, carnival games and Minions fun. Bring a change of clothing if your family chooses to use the water section. There are changing rooms available nearby.

Universal Studios Hollywood Rides without Height Requirements

  • Kung Fu Panda Adventure – motion simulator attraction with individual seats. There are non-moving seats for parents with young children.
  • Studio Tour – use caution when taking young children. There are frightening elements and effects in this ride.
  • Silly Swirly Fun Ride – spinning “Dumbo-type” ride with controls to change height.

Things to Know About Taking Young Kids to Universal Hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood offers single and double stroller rentals in the theme park. Or you’re welcome to bring your own stroller. And unlike the other SoCal theme parks, wagons ARE allowed at Universal Studios Hollywood!

Park restrooms all have diaper-changing stations. Nursing mothers may breastfeed wherever they wish in public within the theme park. Or they may visit the nursing facilities within the First Aid Station.

There aren’t any “adult only” sections of the theme park. Kids can go into any location, including the bars.

Child Switch at Universal Studios Hollywood

Child Switch operates differently than rider switch or rider swap programs at other theme parks. Here’s how Child Switch works at Universal Studios Hollywood:

Your party stays together through the line. Yes, this means your child will be accompanying you through the line (no strollers permitted). Children stay with you in queue so as not to split up the family.

Child-Switch waiting areas are located at the loading zones of the rides. These waiting rooms can also be used for family members who simply don’t want to ride.

How Child Switch Works at Universal Hollywood

One guest in your group steps into the room with the child while the rest of the group rides. Then that person switches places with another adult after the ride so the second person can have their turn. No additional waiting in line.

My 6-year old daughter was not tall enough for Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey so we used the waiting room. The area was roomy with plenty of benches for parents and kids.

Child standing next to height requirement sign at Universal Studios Hollywood

Some rooms have large windows so families can see out. We watched a Harry Potter film on a television while we waited for the rest of the group. When dad and big brother returned after their ride. I then went on the ride with my son while my husband waited with our daughter.

Rides that offer Child Switch waiting rooms:

  • Transformers: The Ride – 3D
  • Revenge of the Mummy
  • Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge

Child Switch was a smooth and seamless process but it has its pros and cons. On the plus side, families can stay together. But for families with rambunctious toddlers, waiting in a long queue together could prove to be too challenging.

Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour

The World-famous Tram Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood is a cornerstone can’t-miss attraction. The ride neatly combines a historical aspect with jaw-dropping experiences.

Entrance sign to The Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood

The former appeals to adults familiar with the movie-making experience (Jaws!). The more intense moments like  King Kong 360 3-D and Fast & Furious – Supercharged are sections that kids and teens will enjoy.

Universal Studios Hollywood is a working movie studio. Both movies and TV shows are currently filmed here. The tour will take you through areas that have been used on past productions and you might even drive past a live set.

Our tour tram drove through the “town” where the shows The Good Place and Rutherford Falls are filmed. We went past several open sound stages where you could peek inside and view the set ups.

The ride takes place on open-air bus trams. Sit in the middle car if possible, for the optimum viewing experience. The center of each tram also offers the best view of the television screens that show snippets from films and shows throughout the ride.

Important to note that guests can bring snacks on the Studio Tour. After waiting in line for over an hour and then going on the hour-long Studio Tour, we were wishing we’d brought a snack! Don’t be like us…grab some food to bring on the bus ride.

Can You Do Universal Studios Hollywood With Special Needs?

The rides and attractions at Universal Studios Hollywood are really intense. Carefully assess the special needs of those in your party and determine whether they’ll be able to take in the realistic motion simulators, intense rides and bright lighting used throughout the park.

Universal Studios Hollywood has a Family Center with quiet rooms that guests with autism (or other special needs) and their families can rest in. The space is also open for nursing mothers. This Family Center allows families to take breaks as needed, without having to leave or return to the hotel.

Motion Sickness at Universal Studios Hollywood

A large majority of the thrill rides at Universal Studios Hollywood include motion simulators. If you err towards motion sickness, you may want to consider using precautions to avoid illness.

  • Non-drowsy “sea sickness” medications or pressure-point bands can help.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day and avoid alcohol.
  • If all else fails have your family go on the rides without you. There are rooms available to wait in (the designated “child-switch areas”) for certain attractions.

Complimentary Storage Lockers

The attractions at Universal Studios Hollywood are fairly intense with lots of movement. Most of these attractions do not offer on-ride storage. Your possessions must be placed inside of a locker before boarding the ride. Universal Studios Hollywood conveniently offers complimentary locker rental at certain attractions.

Guests with backpacks, purses, cell phones, or other items simply step inside the locker room before joining the queue. After a quick fingerprint scan, you’re assigned a locker to store your items for several hours.

After the ride, return to the locker to retrieve your goods. There’s no payment unless you want to store your items inside of the locker for longer.

Are there Single Rider Lines at Universal Studios Hollywood?

Several rides offer a single rider option. This is appealing to older kids, teens and adults who are able to separate from each other.

Guests using the “single rider” line will be chosen to fill empty spots inside ride cars. This means you may not request to be seated with the rest of your group. Single Rider access isn’t always open but just ask the employee at the entrance.

Exterior of Hogwarts Castle

My family used single rider for one of the rides during our visit. The wait time was only ten minutes versus the posted 70 minute wait in the regular queue. What a huge time saver! Of the 5 of us, three of us were seated in the same car albeit in different rows to fill the empty spaces.

The wizarding world of harry potter at universal studios hollywood.

Save plenty of time in your schedule for exploring the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. If you’re a fan of the Harry Potter book or movie series, you will absolutely feel immersed in the village of Hogsmeade.

It’s highly recommended to visit this popular area immediately upon entering the theme park. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter gets very busy. There are so many intricate details in this themed area at Universal Studios Hollywood you may want to spend all day here!

Attractions inside the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (listed in order of how you should visit them):

You’ll definitely want to head here first thing in the morning. This attraction is located inside the towering Hogwarts castle.

The queue takes you through significant scenes from the movies, like Dumbledore’s office, the greenhouse and the talking paintings, which makes the long wait interesting!

How much are Harry Potter wands at Universal Studios Hollywood?

There are two versions (interactive and “non-magical” replicas) and they cost as much as $75.

Even if you don’t buy a wand, the pre-show before entering the shop is whimsical and fun. A participant from the crowd is chosen.

My son was picked and it was a delight to watch the magic unfold! I won’t spoil the surprise but just know that a memorable scene from the Harry Potter movie is reenacted.

On subsequent trips to Universal Hollywood, we’ve brought the wand back with us. There are helpful employees located at the various spots to offer assistance with use of the wands.

More Wizarding World of Harry Potter Attractions

  • Flight of the Hippogriff  – This is a family-friendly roller coaster that’s appropriate for anyone 39″+.
  • Three Broomsticks – This dining location is a must. Not only is the interior impressive, the food is really delicious!

  • Hog’s Head & Magic Neep Cart – You’ll find Butterbeer in several forms at both locations. I’ve heard that the drinks are slightly less in price at Hog’s Head (though the line was out the door on our visit, so I didn’t test that!)
  • Frog Choir & Triwizard Spirit Rally – These live entertainment features with singing and dancing draw a modest crowd.

  • Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts – The evening show with projections on the castle happens several times nightly during select seasons. Check the Universal Hollywood app for details.

Live Shows at Universal Studios Hollywood

I will admit that we didn’t have time in our single day visit to take in any of the live shows. The Special Effects Show and Universal’s Animal Actors have both recently ended.

WaterWorld is the only show currently running. This action-packed show is filled with fight scenes that are best for older kids and adults.

Are There Character Meet n’ Greets at Universal Studios Hollywood?

There are many figures to pose with at Universal Studios Hollywood. Lines we saw were generally pretty short with just a few people waiting. The Transformers queue to meet Bumblebee was the longest, about 20 people deep.

Exterior of Kwik-E-Mart with Bart Simpson outside at Universal Studios Hollywood

Unfortunately there isn’t any filter on the Universal Hollywood app in which to locate the character meet n’ greets. You’ll need to bring your own camera, as there isn’t a system available like  Disney’s PhotoPass . Also, characters at Universal Hollywood do not sign autographs.

These are some of the characters you can meet at Universal Studios Hollywood:

Dining at Universal Studios Hollywood

All of the dining options at Universal Studios Hollywood are quick service, which entails ordering at the counter and then picking up your own food. There are no full-service restaurants inside the theme park.

This also means there’s no advance dining reservations. Every food service location at Universal Hollywood is walk-up. Lines to order can be lengthy. Consider eating at “off-peak” times to avoid the lunch and dinner crowds.

Despite the fast food vibe of the theme park, there is one option that feels more like a regular restaurant.

Dining at The Three Broomsticks

Located inside the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is The Three Broomsticks. This dining location is generally recognized as the best restaurant at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Beyond the immersive feeling of being in Harry Potter’s world, the restaurant is large and accommodating. The food we enjoyed was absolutely delicious. Meals here are like what we’d make at home for Sunday dinner and less like the fast food is really is!

Plate of food at The Three Broomsticks in Universal Studios Hollywood

We ordered The Great Feast to feed our group of six and it was an awesome amount of food. The Great Feast is served on a metal sheet stacked with spare ribs, roast chicken, vegetable, corn on the cob and potatoes. There were 3 teenagers with big appetites in our group and we still had leftovers!

It’s a hearty and filling meal that’s a far cry from the usual theme park dining options. At $69.99, when divided by six guests, this meal is also a bargain!

You can also order Butterbeer at The Three Broomsticks, which is a must. This sweet drink comes in three varieties – frozen, hot and cold. You can also find Butterbeer hard packed ice cream!

Universal Studios Hollywood CityWalk

Just outside of the entrance to Universal Studios Hollywood is CityWalk, an outdoor shopping and dining area. Just like Disneyland’s Downtown Disney District , this location is filled with places to find souvenirs or catch a full-service meal.

When I visited with my kids, we headed out of the park about 20 minutes before closing. We got in quickly for dinner at Johnny Rocket’s for burgers and fries.

There are 30+ dining spots inside CityWalk as well as a movie theater, shops, nightclub and concert venue. The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen has recently opened here.

Souvenir Shopping at Universal Studios Hollywood

In a movie-themed amusement park, naturally there’s tons of merchandise available for sale in the gift shops.

There is a package pick up feature in case you buy something during the day and don’t want to carry it around. Request this service then pick up items at the end of your visit near the exit at the Universal Studio Store. These are a few of the can’t miss locations to shop:

Universal Studios Hollywood Tips for Grown Ups

Of all the Southern California theme parks, Universal Hollywood offers the most entertainment options for adults. Outside of the rides and shows, here are some suggestions for adults:

  • Play carnival games in Springfield U.S.A. or Super Silly Fun Land to win a prize.
  • Shop for souvenirs in one of the many awesome gift shops.
  • Pose for photos at the many photo op locations throughout Universal Hollywood.
  • Explore CityWalk after theme park hours have ended. This outdoor shopping center is located just outside the park gates.

Given the location of Universal Studios within Universal City, there may be concerns about safety. That is a valid worry and travelers to the Los Angeles area should continue with their usual safe travel requirements.

This includes not leaving anything of importance in vehicles as well as locking car and hotel room doors. In addition, use caution when out after dark and do not walk outside alone.

Planning a Trip to Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood Introduction

when in hollywood visit universal studios

It wasn't that long ago that you could find everything you needed know about Universal Studios Hollywood on just one web page. People who visited back then often think they've seen it all and don't need to go back again. They would be wrong.

Over the past few years, Universal has produced some of the most exciting theme park experiences in California. It takes several pages just to cover everything you can see and do there, and if you haven't visited lately, it's time to think about going back.

Is Universal Studios Hollywood Right for You?

Universal wows its visitors with innovative, thrilling rides, but it's not for everyone. If you enjoy (and can tolerate) fast-paced thrill rides and don't mind if they're the motion simulator type, you'll probably love it.

If you have physical issues that prevent you from going on fast rides - or if you prefer your rides slow and steady, you may not find enough to do to justify the cost of a ticket. Small people (less than 40 inches tall) and big people (whose body shape may prevent safety restraints from fastening) may also discover that they can only go on a limited number of rides.

To find out more about what the park is like, and to see it all -without leaving your chair, check out the Universal Studios slideshow .

Universal Studios Hollywood Planner

These resources are everything you need to get started planning your Universal Studios experience. Allow a full day, and you can enjoy everything they have to offer.

  • Universal Studios Complete Ride Guide : Detailed descriptions and tips for every ride and attraction, with height and size restrictions.
  • How to Get Universal Studios Tickets : The box office is the worst way to go. Find out how to get them ahead of time, how to get a discount - and learn about a ticketing loophole that could save you money.
  • What's New - and What's Coming - at Universal Studios Hollywood : Not only what's next, but what's been done in the past few years.
  • Tips for a Perfect Day at Universal : You'll have more fun, stress less, and amaze your companions with how much you know if you follow even half of these tips.
  • Hotels Near Universal Studios : You can do Universal in a day, but you might be too tired to drive home afterward - or you may want to visit other attractions in the area. This guide highlights some of the nicest places to stay nearby.

When to Go to Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal is crowded during summer and long school holidays like spring and winter break. They get even crazier around Christmas when you may encounter the longest lines of the year.

In the summer, it gets really hot at midday, but the hours are longer. You'll have few worries about getting rained out during California's rainy winter season because most of the fun rides are indoors.

Annual Events at Universal Studios Hollywood

Halloween Horror Nights : Every October, Universal puts on a special event, featuring some of their scariest slasher villains. Even the "chainsaw guys" who go around terrorizing people have to try out for their jobs. You'll have to buy a separate ticket or an all-day package to enjoy the park and this bloody scare-fest on the same day.

Harry Potter Christmas and Grinchmas :  The Grinch stole Christmas, but then he brought it back - and it's a good thing he did because the holiday celebration at Wizarding World is excellent. You don't need a separate ticket for these.

What's Nearby

Universal CityWalk , just outside the park entrance is a lively shopping and dining complex open to the public. It's a good place to eat dinner or to do a little shopping, or even go to a movie after a day at Universal Studios Hollywood.

If the Universal studio tour got you interested in how movies are made, Warner Bros Studios is just up the street, and they have a great public tour.

The Metro Red Line also stops near the park, and you can catch a shuttle bus from there to the entrance. The Metro system covers much of the LA area. Find out more information about the Metro Red Line here.

Some tour companies offer admission and transportation packages from San Diego. They can cost as much as $40 per person over full ticket price with no chance for discounts, and they limit your time at the park. Consider this option only if you have no others.

Best Times to Visit Universal Studios Hollywood

Planning a trip to Universal Studios Hollywood ? As one of Los Angeles’ most popular theme parks, knowing the best times to visit can greatly improve your experience. Avoiding peak crowds and long lines will allow you to maximize your time to enjoy more rides, shows, and attractions. This  comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know, from the least busy months and days, to tips on getting the most out of your visit during slower periods. Read on for insights from a theme park expert to help make your Universal Studios vacation smooth, stress-free, and fun!

Least Busy Months

Crowd levels fluctuate significantly throughout the year at Universal Studios Hollywood. Planning your visit during less busy months will mean shorter lines and more time enjoying the park’s top attractions.

September – October

Once school is back in session after the summer vacation months, September and October see noticeable dips in attendance. Weekdays during this period are some of the best times to visit Universal Studios, though weekends around Halloween Horror Nights still draw larger crowds.

January – February

January and February are typically the least crowded months. Aside from around the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, the park is fairly empty after the New Year’s rush. There’s also fun Lunar New Year festivities in January and February.

November – Early December

Before the holiday vacation crowds arrive, November and early December have manageable attendance during the week. However, the weekends around Thanksgiving can get busy.

Best Days of the Week

In addition to planning around peak seasons, choosing the right day of the week is also key to avoiding crowds:

  • Tuesday – Thursday:  Weekdays almost always have lower attendance than Friday – Sunday. And mid-week days tend to be least crowded.
  • Fridays:  While not as busy as Saturdays or Sundays, Fridays attract more locals and weekend travelers.
  • Mondays & Sundays:  Mondays can still be popular with 3-4 day weekend visitors. Sundays also draw bigger crowds with locals before the workweek starts.
  • Saturdays:  Far and away the busiest day of the week year-round. Expect peak attendance and longest lines, especially during popular seasons.

Tips to Maximize Your Time

When visiting Universal Studios Hollywood during slower periods, you can take advantage of the lower crowds. Here are handy ways to experience more attractions and make the most of your day:

Arrive Early

Be at the front gates 30–60 minutes before official opening time to be among the first inside. Ride wait times will be shortest first thing in the morning.

Get There by Opening

On less crowded days, popular rides like The Simpsons and Transformers can still hit 60+ minute waits by mid-morning. Arriving by opening lets you knock out top attractions faster.

Do the Studio Tour Early

The iconic Studio Tour around the backlot can reach waits of 60–90 minutes by the afternoon. Try to take the tour earlier when waits are usually under 30 minutes.

Use Single Rider Lines

Several rides like Jurassic World and Transformers have single rider queues that keep moving even when standby reaches an hour+. Take advantage of slower days.

Mobile Order Meals

Avoid long lines at dining locations by mobile ordering on the Universal Studios Hollywood app. Then grab your food without waiting.

Take time to enjoy shows like WaterWorld, Special Effects, and Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle without missing rides when crowds are lower.

Crowd Level Resources

Wondering if a specific date will be busy? There are great crowd level resources to help predict and track attendance:

  • Universal Studios Crowd Calendar  – See crowd predictions for upcoming dates
  • Crowd Tracker  – Check real-time crowd levels and ride waits
  • Universal Studios App  – View estimated ride wait times

Monitoring these crowd data sources will help you determine the least busy days and times during your visit.

Themed Lands

There’s lots to do at this amazing theme park, so plan your day carefully! Here’s a list of all the themed lands you can visit!

  • Features family-oriented rides and attractions like Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, Super Silly Fun Land, Transformers: The Ride 3D, etc.
  • Home to more thrilling rides like Jurassic World, Revenge of the Mummy, and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey
  • Immersive Simpsons themed area with restaurants like Krusty Burger and Moe’s Tavern
  • Highly detailed recreation of Hogsmeade village and Hogwarts castle from the Harry Potter films
  • Land themed around the Jurassic Park/World franchise anchored by the Jurassic World water ride
  • Colorful carnival-style area inspired by Illumination’s Despicable Me movies
  • An incredible video game themed land featuring a Mario Kart ride
  • Avoid weekends and peak times like holidays or school breaks when crowds are highest. Weekdays like Tuesday-Thursday tend to be less busy.
  • Arrive early, at least 30 minutes before park opening, to experience popular rides quickly with shorter wait times. Ride Lower Lot thrill rides first before crowds build up.
  • Check online crowd calendars and apps to see predicted wait times and plan less crowded days. Use Universal’s app to view real-time ride waits.
  • Purchase tickets online in advance to skip ticket booth lines. Also consider Express Passes or VIP tours to bypass regular standby queues.
  • Take the Studio Tour earlier in the day when wait times tend to be shorter, under 30 minutes.
  • Use single rider lines at rides like Transformers and Jurassic World to keep moving even when standby lines are over an hour.
  • Mobile order meals on the app to avoid long lines at dining locations.
  • Build in time for shows like WaterWorld and Special Effects stage when crowds are lighter.

Avoiding peak attendance by planning your Universal Studios Hollywood vacation around slower months like September and February can make your trip much more enjoyable. Following tips like arriving early, using single rider lines, and checking real-time crowd trackers will also help you experience more with less waiting. Use this guide to determine the best times to visit and maximize your day at one of Los Angeles’ most popular theme parks!

13 Tips & Tricks for Visiting Universal Studios Hollywood in LA (First-timer’s Guide)

Thinking of visiting Universal Studios Hollywood in LA and wondering what to expect? In this guide, you can find some of our top tips to help you make the most out of your day. Find out!

Universal Studios Hollywood is one of the most popular attractions in Los Angeles, California, and one of the top 10 most visited theme parks in the USA. Millions of people visit Universal Studios every year. During peak times, the park receives up to 30-40,000 visitors in a day.

While planning your first visit to Universal Studios in LA can feel overwhelming, it’s actually a lot simpler than it might look at first sight. And with some advance preparation, you can be sure to make the most out of your visit.

Recently, we visited Universal Studios Hollywood during one of the busiest seasons of the year (Christmas – New Year). In this guide, we share all the things that we wish we had known before our visit. While it will not always be as busy, these tips will give you a better idea of what to expect and will help you make the most out of your time and money no matter when you go. Find out!

Universal Studios Globe, Burbank, Los Angeles

Here are some of our top tips for visiting Universal Studios Hollywood in LA:

1. Avoid Weekends and Public Holidays

Of course, it’s not always easy to adjust your travel plans, but if you can take this into account when planning your visit to LA, try to avoid visiting Universal Studios on weekends and during school holidays .

Even if you are traveling in the high season as we were, some days will be busier than others. For example, we had three full days in LA , so we chose the beginning of the week for our visit to Universal Studios. It was still busy, but visiting on a Tuesday was relaxed compared to coming on Friday or Saturday…

Big crowds are not the only reason to visit Universal Studios Hollywood on a weekday. They work with flexible ticket prices, which usually means that entrance tickets are cheaper on weekdays than on weekends or school holidays.

The prices also depend on the season in general. During the busy weeks around Easter break or Christmas, the ticket prices are at their highest – no matter if you come on Saturday or on Monday. Whereas if you visit on a regular weekday in late January or February, you’ll pay much less.

2. Arrive Early & Stay Late

Our next tip will help you to make the most out of your day at Universal Studios Hollywood.

If you want to visit as much as possible in a day, be sure to arrive as soon as the park opens and stay until it closes . The actual opening times depend on the season. But no matter the season, the quietest time at the park is the first hour or two after it opens.

TIP: If you arrive at the park early in the morning, head to the most popular rides first. These are usually ‘wilder’ attractions and rollercoaster rides.

Another trick is to leave some of the most popular rides for last and do them a few hours before the park closes. On those days when the closing time is at 6 pm, you can’t really expect it to be quiet an hour before the closing time. But on some days, the park remains open until 9 pm or even later, and by that time, it definitely gets quieter.

In addition, if you stay later, you might be able to see a beautiful light show!

Our experience: We started our day at Universal Studios with the ‘Harry Potter and The Forbidden Journey’ ride. The wait time was just 20 minutes. When we left, there was already a 50-minute wait and a few hours later, people were queueing for over an hour.

We also decided to go to the Lower Lot (where some of the most popular rides are located) in the evening. Most of the attractions here had wait times of 50-70 minutes during the day. In the evening, we didn’t have to wait anywhere longer than half an hour.

3. Skip the Lines with Express Tickets

If you hate the idea of having to spend hours and hours queuing at each and every single ride, show, and attraction, upgrade to an Express ticket . It’s quite a lot more expensive than a regular ticket, but it gives you fast-track access everywhere (once per attraction and per day).

If you want to have unlimited express access everywhere and as many times as you like, then you’ll need a VIP tour/ticket . It costs quite a lot more than a regular ticket, but it also includes so much more (parking, snacks and refreshment, gourmet lunch, guided behind-the-scenes studio tour, etc.)

You can find more information on different ticket options further below.

TIP: Some attractions at Universal Studios sometimes offer fast-track access to single riders . So if you don’t mind sitting separately from your group, this might save you some time. However, this is not always available and we saw it open and close again at a few rides without any explanation why.

4. Book in Advance

Normally, you can just get your tickets at the entrance of Universal Studios LA. However, the lines are usually so long that you can easily waste half an hour or even more just to get a ticket. This doesn’t include the security check or the lines to actually get inside the park.

So we highly recommend that you book your tickets in advance . You receive an electronic ticket with a QR code and can just go straight to the entrance skipping the lines at the ticket desk.

TIP: We booked our tickets through GetYourGuide and it was a great experience. The price you see is the price you pay (so no additional sale taxes are added at checkout or similar). In addition, they normally offer free cancelation/rescheduling of your ticket, which is a big bonus if your plans would change unexpectedly. Plus, the whole booking process is so simple; not comparable with the official site where you get overloaded with all the unnecessary options and way too much information.

Talking about tickets, there are basically three options to consider:

1. Standard entry tickets give you access to the park and all the attractions. More details and info here .

2. Express tickets can be booked as an upgrade to the regular ticket . Universal Express™ includes fast-track access to all rides, shows, and attractions (once per attraction).

3. VIP tour has lots of additional perks including unlimited fast-track access, behind-the-scenes film studio tour, free Valet Parking, and even some meals. More details and info here .

In addition, you can opt for 2-day tickets. This will give you much more time inside the park, and if you want to try every single ride and attraction without getting express tickets, then you will indeed need two days. However, we found that one day was more than plenty to see and do everything we wanted.

5. Don’t Bring Big Bags

If you want to enjoy your day at Universal Studios Hollywood to the fullest, bring as little stuff with you as possible . As you will see below, we do recommend packing some items, but for the rest – don’t take anything you don’t absolutely need.

First, they have an airport-style security check at the entrance. They check your bags and even make you take off your belt. But that’s not a big deal compared to the rides and attractions.

For most ‘wilder’ rides, you’ll have to leave your backpacks in a locker, which means lots of wasted time (every single time).

TIP: If you need to take a bag, pack something small that you can easily keep with you without using your hands. I had a (not-so-small) crossbody purse and could take it on all the rides without any problems.

6. Bring Water & Some Snacks

Now that I told you not to take a big bag, I have to add that it’s helpful to have some water and snacks with you. Ideally, you take a refillable water bottle and some snacks for a quick lunch (small snacks that can fit in a small bag ;)).

Of course, you won’t survive the whole day on just a few snacks. But if you can avoid having to eat during the peak lunchtime hours, you will – again – save a lot of time.

Plus, it will be a bit quieter at the attractions when most people are having lunch. So ideally, you go and eat a few hours later than the majority of people. It’s never really quiet at any restaurant at Universal Studios in the afternoon, but it sure helps if you can avoid the busiest peak dining times.

TIP: If you are traveling on a lower budget, you should know that food and drinks are very expensive at Universal Studios (just like everywhere at theme parks). So if you want to save some money, you may want to bring a picnic with you. You could store your bag in a locker when not in use.

7. Research Which Shows & Attractions You Want to Do

There are lots of things to do at Universal Studios. Unless you are visiting on an extremely quiet day or pay extra for the fast-track tickets, it’s quite unlikely that you will be able to see everything in a day. On the other hand, you may not really be interested in everything either…

So be sure to do some research on which shows, rides, and attractions you absolutely don’t want to miss, and concentrate on those first.

If you are wondering what to choose, it all really depends on your interests and the ages of your kids (if visiting with children).

With young kids , you may want to spend most of the time at the Upper Lot, and mainly the ‘Super Silly Fun Land’. There, you will also find family-friendly rides such as ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ or ‘Despicable Me Minion Mayhem’, etc.

With somewhat bigger children , head to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and check out the nearby Simpsons Ride.

If you are looking for thrill rides , head to the Lower Lot where you will find ‘Revenge of the Mummy’, ‘Jurassic World’, and ‘Transformers’.

In addition to the rides, there are also some shows that you may want to see at Universal Studios Hollywood. This can depend on the season and on the day, so be sure to double-check what’s available on the day of your visit. This brings us to the next point…

8. Don’t Miss the Studio Tour

If there is one thing that distinguishes Universal Studios Hollywood from all other theme parks, it’s the World Famous Studio Tour (aka The Backlot Tour).

You would almost forget it these days, but Universal Studios Hollywood is a working film studio where movies are made. So no visit here would be complete without getting a bit behind the scenes and seeing where the magic happens.

Universal Studios Hollywood has been running their iconic Studio Tours since the 1960s. And while some parts of the tour haven’t changed for years, there is always something new to experience as well. It’s now much less about actual film sets and more about entertainment, 3D experiences, etc. But one thing remains constant – it’s always super fun!

I won’t tell you much more about the things you get to see and experience because I strongly believe that you enjoy it more if you just go there without any expectations and with an open mind. But no matter when you visit, how much time you have, and whatever your interests are, do not miss the studio tour!

TIP: If you want to explore the film studios deeper beyond the standard tour that everyone does, you can only do this with the VIP tour . I wouldn’t pay that much more just for this, but if you are already considering it for other reasons (like the unlimited skip-the-line entry everywhere), then their behind-the-scenes studio tour is definitely a nice extra perk.

9. Prepare to Get Wet

One of the must-sees at Universal Studios Hollywood is their most popular show – WaterWorld . It’s a really cool show with lots of action and special effects and is always fun to see. However, there is always a big chance that you will get wet.

They have seats in two colors indicating the area where you are guaranteed to get wet. But it doesn’t work the other way around – there is no guarantee that you won’t get wet if sitting outside the splash zone.

If the weather is nice, it’s warm, and you don’t mind getting wet, then it’s not a big deal at all. But if you want to be sure that you remain dry, try to sit as far from the stage as possible.

On our most recent visit to Universal Studios Hollywood in the winter, it was rather cold and we were all wearing jeans and warm jackets. The last thing you want on a cold grey winter day is getting wet. So we made sure to sit well outside the splash zone. But that wasn’t enough.

One of our kids and I got soaking wet (not just a little, but as if someone would throw a bucket of water on you). It took us 4 hours to get dry… The rest of the family found it very amusing and it sure made our visit more unforgettable, but it’s not something we would have willingly chosen on a cold day…

‘Jurassic World: The Ride’ is another attraction where you are almost guaranteed to get wet.

TIP: We saw lots of people bring disposable rain ponchos to these shows and attractions. It might be a good idea, indeed. Another option is to wear quick-drying clothes when visiting Universal Studios. That way, if you do get wet, at least it doesn’t take you hours to get dry again.

10. Wear Comfortable Shoes

Universal Studios Hollywood is a very big theme park. So prepare to walk a lot. At the end of the day, you will have done well over 10,000 steps…

So be sure to wear comfortable shoes! Also, they should sit tight on your feet so that you don’t have to worry about losing them on one of the rides.

It’s definitely not a good idea to wear flip-flops when visiting a theme park.

11. Install the Universal Hollywood™ App

One of the best ways to make the most of your time in the park is to install their mobile app. You can do it in advance or simply by scanning a qr code upon arrival in the park.

You can use the app to check the show times or to see live data about the waiting times at all the rides and attractions. Sometimes, you can also reserve a virtual line ticket for some rides via the app.

You will find all this information at different places throughout the park as well, but we found the app really handy.

Good to know: Universal Studios Hollywood offers free Wi-Fi throughout the park.

12. Don’t Come by Car

Just to make things clear, you can drive to Universal Studios Hollywood by car. They do have huge parking garages, so you can easily come in your own car.

However, parking is really expensive and it can also get very busy. So depending on where you are coming from, it might be simpler to just leave the car at your hotel and take a taxi or a metro here.

If you come by metro, you can walk to the park entrance in about 10-15 minutes. There is also a shuttle between the metro station and the park entrance, but it’s so slow that – unless it’s standing there as you arrive – it’s quicker to just walk.

13. Stay Nearby

If you want to make the most of your visit to Universal Studios, you may want to stay at one of the hotels just near the park entrance.

That way, you can start your day as soon as the park opens and stay until it closes. Plus, you won’t have to pay for a taxi or parking. You’ll likely have to pay for parking at your hotel, but that is the case everywhere in LA.

Good to know: The two best hotels just near the entrance of the park are Hilton LA Universal City and Sheraton Universal .

So, these are some of our tips and things we wish we had known before visiting Universal Studios Hollywood.

I hope that this gives you a better idea of what to expect. Enjoy your visit!

Don’t bring bags and the next tip is bring snacks and water…ok.

Ha ha, that's exactly what I said in the article, Janet :). And I also explained that you could store your bag in a locker. Alternatively, you could do as we did and just take a crossbody bag. Mine easily fits a bottle of water and quite a lot of snacks, and the advantage of a crossbody bag is that you can hold it on you pretty much everywhere. I didn't have to leave my bag behind at any of the rides. Hope this helps. Enjoy!

2024 Universal Studios Hollywood Planning Guide

when in hollywood visit universal studios

Our 2024 Universal Studios Hollywood planning guide offers tips & tricks to help you save money & time, avoid crowds in Super Nintendo World, and what else to do at the “Entertainment Capital of Los Angeles.” USH is one of Southern California’s best theme parks, and a great side trip if you’re visiting Disneyland . ( Updated January 7, 2024 .)

The last year has been a huge one for Universal Studios Hollywood. Last year started with the debut of Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen, a new restaurant and confectionery in Universal CityWalk. This is a good spot for crowd-pleasing fare and fun, like Cheesecake Factory but in a highly-themed setting. So long as you have the proper expectations about what it is and isn’t, you’re likely to have a good experience.

In addition to that, Universal Studios Hollywood’s world famous studio tour has a new scene featuring Jupiter’s Claim from Nope. That, plus other little additions and closures are paving the way for USH’s star to shine even brighter. However, all of this is relatively insignificant as compared to the 800 pound plumber in the room…

Super Nintendo World is now open at Universal Studios Hollywood! This marks the official arrival of Mario, Luigi, Bowser, and other iconic Nintendo characters to the United States theme park scene. It’s the second of three versions of the land; with the first already open in Universal Studios Japan.

We’ve had the chance to experience Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood several times, and it’s truly something special. Super Nintendo World features the groundbreaking Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge ride, as well as many interactive activities designed to engage the entire family within the captivating Mushroom Kingdom.

If you’re planning a visit to Universal Studios Hollywood and Mario and friends are your main motivation, you should consult our comprehensive Strategy Guide for Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood . That offers tips & tricks, how to beat the crowds, and a ton of other advice for making the most of your time in this incredible new land.

when in hollywood visit universal studios

The biggest thing to know about Super Nintendo World is that it’s insanely popular and  crazy crowded . This should not come as a surprise given the popularity of Super Mario Bros., but suffice to say, you really need to have a plan of attack. Whether that mean buying Early Access, rope dropping the land, staying late, etc. The above guide has you covered with all of those options–we just want to reiterate their importance.

You absolutely should not arrive late and hit Super Nintendo World midday. That’s what the majority of guests do, and they encounter triple-digit wait times for Mario Kart, get shut out of Toadstool Cafe, and fail to finish all of the minigames as a result. Just a fair warning–don’t make the same mistakes as the majority of guests!

If you’re on the fence about Super Nintendo World, or want more recommendations for whatever reason, check out our thoughts in Super Nintendo World Review: Good, Bad & Ugly . If you’re looking for more Mario Kart info, see our  Ride Review: Mario Kart Bowser’s Challenge . (Both of those reviews are based on the USJ version of Super Nintendo World.)

On a more practical note, there’s our  Review of Toadstool Cafe in Super Nintendo World , which is based on the California version of that restaurant.

when in hollywood visit universal studios

It should go without saying, but Super Nintendo World has drawn colossal crowds to Universal Studios Hollywood. Attendance exploded last year after the new land opened, and aside from a few pockets of off-season dates, it hasn’t really let up yet–a year later. We expect that to die down to some degree in 2024, but not entirely.

For one thing, Mario is more recognizable than Mickey Mouse, and millions of kids and adults are undoubtedly eager to step into their favorite video games. This is going to turn Universal Studios Hollywood into a vacation destination for visitors from around the country.

For another thing, Universal Studios Hollywood is a popular vacation destination for visitors from around the world. Especially in the summer, the park is popular with international tour groups. Those started to come back last year, but not to the same degree as 2019. With China fully reopening and other countries in Asia being slower to recover, we’d expect those demographics to bounce back in 2024.

Compounding the crowd issue is the  size  of Super Nintendo World. As a result of that compact footprint coupled with high demand, Universal uses a virtual line system for accessing Super Nintendo World on busier days. The good news is that the land does not require advance reservations. Guests are able to enter Super Nintendo World as usual, so long as it is not at capacity. If it is at capacity, make reservation from the USH app while inside park, or kiosk on Lower Lot.

In our experience, so long as you arrive early or late, the virtual line is a non-factor. It’s usually only in use on weekends, holidays, and other peak season days when school is out of session. Even then, so long as you arrive before 10 am or after 4 pm, you typically won’t have to deal with the virtual queue.

when in hollywood visit universal studios

Universal Studios Hollywood has improved tremendously in the last several years, so there are a ton of fun things to do beyond Super Nintendo World! The Studio Tour, WaterWorld Stunt Show, and Jurassic World: the Ride (featuring a new Indominus Rex) are all awesome.

On the family-friendly front, there’s the Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash. We reviewed this in Universal’s New Dark Ride Rivals Disney’s Best! As the title suggests, that article is full of effusive praise, as this family-friendly dark ride based on the hit film franchise is absolutely fantastic. It’s a great change of pace from the usual thrill rides at USH!

Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash also uses Virtual Line on busier days, so be sure to score a spot in the virtual queue so you don’t miss this awesome attraction!

when in hollywood visit universal studios

Beyond that, Universal Studios Hollywood has changed a lot in the last 5 years–and for the better. The biggest recent addition is the aforementioned Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash. Prior to that, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter was added to the upper lot. On the lower lot, there’s the newly-redone Jurassic World area, which includes Raptor Encounter, DinoPlay, Isla Nu-bar, and Jurassic World — The Ride.

Huge areas of USH already have been dramatically transformed from how they were about a decade ago when we first bought our Universal Studios Hollywood Annual Passes. The future is also bright, with replacement stage shows and other entertainment, and rumors that USH is trying to figure out some way to expand Super Nintendo World.

In terms of concrete additions, the next big thing is the Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift roller coaster (name not officially confirmed). In fact, nothing has been confirmed about this coaster except for its existence, but it’s expected to start on the Upper Lot and continue on the hillside above the Lower Lot, even looping around the top escalator to the Lower Lot. It’s expected to open by the first half of 2025, which could mean there’s a possibility it debuts in late 2024. (Based on construction progress, this year seems unlikely.)

when in hollywood visit universal studios

In the lead-up to the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, there are other long-term plans to add more rides to this hybrid of a theme park and working film studio. That ‘hybrid’ nature of the park is critical to Universal Studios Hollywood’s success, and what makes it distinct from both other theme parks in Southern California and other studio tours at Warner Brothers, Paramount, and Sony.

This also makes it significantly different from Universal Orlando Resort , with far fewer attractions (and only one park), but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a pale imitator or inferior substitute. Much like Disneyland is smaller than Walt Disney World but offers an excellent, albeit different experience, so too does Universal Studios Hollywood. And part of this is because of its hybrid nature, not in spite of it.

With that said, here’s what you need to know about visiting Universal Studios Hollywood, where you can ride the movies!

When to Visit

when in hollywood visit universal studios

Very few people are probably planning a trip to Los Angeles solely for Universal Studios Hollywood. Most of you are probably adding on a day as part of your Disneyland or Southern California vacation, so the answer to this is easy…whenever you’re coming to California.

In this regard, crowd patterns at Disneyland translate pretty similarly to Universal Studios Hollywood. The busy season at one is the busy season at the other, and vice-a-versa with slow seasons. Crowds at both are primarily based upon school schedules–primarily those of Los Angeles and Orange County, California (but to a lesser degree, the western United States). You can basically refer to our When to Visit Disneyland post to determine when to visit.

As for when to visit California, we’re partial to the fall and winter months. Summer doesn’t get humid like Florida and many other states, but it can be hot. More importantly, that’s when everyone else comes to California–meaning crowds.

Park Tickets

hogwarts-castle-night-wizarding-world-harry-potter-universal-hollywood-los-angeles

Now that Super Nintendo World is open, there are far fewer ways to save on admission to Universal Studios Hollywood. Demand has skyrocketed, which means deals have dried up. Nevertheless, there are still a couple of good options for saving money on Universal Studios Hollywood tickets.

The first is simply buying an Annual Pass. If you live in Southern California, this is pretty much a no-brainer, as the lower tier is cheaper than multi-day tickets to USH. As noted, we are Universal Studios Hollywood Annual Passholders even though we live much closer to Disneyland and don’t visit USH. (We have two different tiers for the sake of perks and free parking–a smart option for families.)

If you’re not local of view the AP as overkill, the other option is buying discounted multi-day tickets via Get Away Today . To be clear, we do not think USH is a 2-day or 3-day park if you strategize well. But if you don’t–or are a huge Harry Potter or Mario fan–spreading your visit over multiple days is really smart. Universal Studios Hollywood sells both 2-day and 3-day tickets with a fairly low incremental cost (versus single-day tickets). We recommend doing 2-day tickets, rather than 3-day ones.

Three full days is overkill, but we love doing an evening one night followed by arriving for rope drop on day two and staying the entire day. If you still haven’t had your fill, get the 3-day ticket and do rope drop again on day 3 and leave early. Or simply do mornings and evenings, skipping the middle of the day, and taking the Metro into Los Angeles to avoid the longest lines during the midday rush at USH.

Spreading things out over a night and the following morning makes things a lot more pleasant, and means far less waiting in line. Plus, it gives you a chance to experience both day and night in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Super Nintendo World. (Speaking of which, huge Harry Potter fans who want to spend an entire day in Hogsmeade, and then elect to spend a second day doing the rest of the park. Ditto Mario maniacs and Super Nintendo World.)

when in hollywood visit universal studios

If you’re considering doing more than a couple of days, you might consider an Annual Pass. This mostly applies to Californians who might want to revisit later in the year. We have the lowest tier (the “Season Pass”) and it cost us slightly less than a 2-day ticket. There are blockout dates and this pass doesn’t include parking, but it has been a great value for us.

You might also find discount offers on 1-day tickets or Annual Passes at Costco, Ralph’s, Vons, and other California grocers. Sam’s Club and AAA sometimes offer discounts on tickets for their members, so be sure to check that out if you’re eligible.

when in hollywood visit universal studios

If you’re driving to Universal Studios Hollywood, add 30 minutes to whatever Google Maps estimates as your drive time so you can arrive before park opening. If you’re trying to make it from your Disneyland-area hotel to Universal Studios Hollywood for rope drop, there’s a reasonable chance you will be driving during at least part of rush hour. When you sit at your computer and plan this all out at 11 p.m., this traffic won’t be accounted for.

The plus side to leaving early and arriving to USH at rope drop is that few other people will do it. Los Angelenos are unfamiliar with the concept of being “on time” since the traffic gods more or less preclude that. Crowds tend to show up about 1-2 hours after park opening, and tend to tour the park in a predictable manner. If you can get ahead of the wave of crowds, you can really come out ahead at Universal Studios Hollywood.

when in hollywood visit universal studios

Upon arrival, here should be your priorities, in order:

  • Super Nintendo World
  • Transformers: The Ride 3D
  • Jurassic World – The Ride
  • Revenge of the Mummy – The Ride
  • Studio Tour
  • The Simpsons Ride
  • Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem
  • Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash
  • Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey

Okay, a bit of explanation for all of that. First, we strongly encourage all but the most hardcore Harry Potter fans to skip Ollivanders. It’s basically a pre-show for buying wands, and takes valuable time early in the morning. Likewise, Flight of the Hippogriff is a waste of time if you’re over the age of 5.

when in hollywood visit universal studios

Your main goal should be getting down to the Lower Lot attractions (Super Nintendo World, Transformers, Jurassic World, and Revenge of the Mummy) as early as possible. This area of the park, separated by a series of escalators and stairs, used to start slower in the morning. Super Nintendo World has changed that, but you should still attempt to beat the rush down there.

Secret Life of Pets, Forbidden Journey, Simpsons, and Despicable Me are the 4 attractions that are going to draw long waits early-on. This is because they are the popular rides near the front of the park. If you can ride these before the “crowd wave”, awesome. If not, save them until the end of the day when lines will taper off.

when in hollywood visit universal studios

Honestly, the above itinerary works about the same forwards and backwards. You either want to beat the crowds  or outlast them.  Crowds peak at Universal Studios Hollywood in the late morning and early afternoon, and decrease after that. We highly recommend staying until park closing and then doing dinner afterwards in CityWalk.

With that approach, not only will you experience lower crowd levels at the end of the evening, but you’re also less likely to be stuck in traffic in the parking lot that is the Hollywood Freeway during rush hour. Park opening and closing times vary based on season, but it’s always our goal to not leave USH until after 8 pm. Any time before that is a recipe to be stuck in traffic on the 101.

universal-studios-hollywood-planning-guide-sign

If you’re willing to use it, Single Rider will save a ton of time during busier times. Single Rider is available at the following attractions:

While we like (and recommend) doing all of the shows, the biggest can’t miss at Universal Studios Hollywood is the Studio Tour. Do not confuse its placement on the itinerary above as it being of low importance. It is the must-do at USH. (We only place it later in the day as lines tend to get shorter later in the day.) Do not miss it.

when in hollywood visit universal studios

If you’re visiting during a season when the Nighttime Studio Tour is being offered, we highly recommend doing both the regular Studio Tour and the Nighttime version. Every ride on the Studio Tour is different, but night brings a new element to the attraction.

Seriously, we cannot stress it enough: do the Studio Tour . This is the defining attraction of Universal Studios Hollywood, and the only thing we make a point of doing each time we visit. (Just don’t get your hopes up about the Fast and the Furious sequence…it has more cheesiness than the movies, but without the redeeming charm and heart.)

Gate A/Front of Line Pass

when in hollywood visit universal studios

“Gate A” is Universal Studios Hollywood’s “Front of Line” pass, which is like FastPass at Disneyland, except that Gate A costs money. In some cases, a lo t of money. Prices for Gate A start at +$100 the cost of single day tickets and increase in cost depending upon the season (the busier it is, the more you pay).

We are not proponents of purchasing Gate A unless you are going during the height of tourist season (think summer, spring break, or any national holidays), and even then, we would advocate taking advantage of Universal Studios Hollywood’s many Single Rider lines or arriving at park opening and utilizing an efficient park touring strategy like the one above.

If you follow our plan above, the Front of Line/Gate A pass is just not necessary the vast majority of the time. Maybe it would be on like the 10 busiest days of the year, but we have never had an issue doing everything in USH during a single day without Gate A.

Where to Stay

when in hollywood visit universal studios

There are a number of variables that play into this. First, are you visiting Universal Studios Hollywood as a day-trip from Disneyland? Is the visit part of a Southern California vacation? A California road trip? Let’s address each of these…

Disneyland Day Trip – Stick to your hotel in Anaheim and just drive there and back. Traffic aside, this is pretty simple. Universal doesn’t open at the crack of dawn, so you’ll have a reasonable amount of transit time while still being able to make park opening.

Southern California Vacation – If you’re doing this and don’t mind changing hotels once–which is what we recommend–we’d suggest doing (at least) a split stay, having a hotel in Orange County/Anaheim for the Disneyland, beach, and whatever else in the O.C. portion of your trip, and then a separate hotel in Los Angeles or near Universal Studios Hollywood.

when in hollywood visit universal studios

California Road Trip – If you’re doing a road trip down/up the state (let’s say flying into San Diego and flying out of San Francisco with a one-way car rental), we would recommend Universal Studios Hollywood being what you do on your last day in the Los Angeles area before heading north.

The night before, stay in L.A., but the night after, drive up to Santa Barbara. It’s a little over an hour drive, but getting back to your (much closer, distance-wise) hotel in L.A. could take just as long that night. Staying in Santa Barbara gets you away from the city and prepared to enjoy sunrise over the ocean the next morning without having to fight traffic to head north.

when in hollywood visit universal studios

When it comes to specific hotels near USH, we like the Garland and Sheraton Universal Hotel. Both are really close to the park, with the Sheraton being a short walk and the Garland being a short (free!) shuttle ride. You’ll also find the Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City “on-site” at Universal Studios Hollywood.

There’s also a Metro Red Line station at Universal Studios Hollywood, making anything along the Red Line super convenient to the park, including options in Downtown LA. Rather than going for a bland chain, you might consider something eclectic or with old-Hollywood charm, like the Safari Inn.

when in hollywood visit universal studios

When booking in Los Angeles, be mindful of neighborhoods, parking charges, and resort fees. If you find a “too good to be true” price, it probably is. If you are picking a hotel specifically for USH, we recommend looking north of downtown Los Angeles. Burbank and Glendale can be better options than Hollywood/Los Angeles. Neighborhoods like North Hollywood, Hollywood Hills, and Los Feliz are also smart picks.

To save money, check out the Universal Studios Hollywood hotel + ticket packages offered via Get Away Today . They have several hotels from which to choose, but our top pick is definitely the Garland. It’s a great resort-style property with a ton of personality, great rooms, and posh amenities. The Sheraton is also chic and nice, but it’s the kind of hotel you could find anywhere.

Transportation

when in hollywood visit universal studios

There are no two ways about this: driving in Los Angeles sucks. And, if you’re visiting Universal Studios Hollywood, there’s a good chance you’ll drive through L.A. to get there. However, that doesn’t have to be the case!

As noted above, there’s a Metro Red Line station located at Universal City, which is a short walk from both the park itself and CityWalk. The Metro Red Line is a subway running between Downtown Los Angeles and North Hollywood, with stops in or near the Civic Center, Financial District, Wilshire Boulevard, Hollywood & Sunset Boulevards, Koreatown, and the San Fernando Valley.

Even if you’re staying in Orange County near Disneyland, you can get to Universal Studios Hollywood without driving. Simply take the Pacific Surfliner from Anaheim to Union Station in Los Angeles, where you can then catch the Metro. We only recommend this for the most traffic-averse, as it is a bit of a hassle.

universal-studios-hollywood-los-angeles-california-bricker-028

Most people will want to drive themselves from Disneyland to Universal Studios Hollywood. There aren’t any good shuttles, Uber is too pricey, and public transit can be convoluted and inefficient. Unfortunately, traffic can be bad too, and should not be underestimated. Plan on at least an hour, and potentially closer to 2 depending upon traffic.

For the most part, if you’re visiting California and plan to go anywhere off Disneyland property, you’ll want to rent a car. Traffic can be intimidating, but if you drive between the hours of 10 am and 3 pm or 9 pm and 7 am, you’ll be absolutely fine. We’ve done a lot of one-day rentals from rental car agencies within walking distance of Disneyland, and then have just done after-hours drop-offs.

As for airfare, rental cars, and other basics, here’s my standard info: for finding cheap airfare, we recommend ITA Software by Google . It’s the most robust airfare search engine out there, although you can’t book through it. It offers latitude in choosing multiple airports, flexible travel dates, and more.

simpsons-krusty-burger-universal-studios-hollywood-010

Once you ride the movies right into the gift shop and buy the movies with your American Express–official credit card of the Entertainment Capital of L.A.–it’s time to dine (at?) the movies.

If you’re fine with counter service dining, Universal Studios Hollywood has several solid options inside the park. As a whole, I do not think the culinary experience is on par with Disneyland’s, but the highlights are more than serviceable. The best options, in my mind, are the counter service restaurants in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (Three Broomsticks) and the Simpsons restaurants in Springfield.

The food at Three Broomsticks is pricey, but it’s near-table service quality. The Simpsons food is mostly guilty pleasure stuff, but the burgers and waffle chicken sandwich are excellent. Don’t knock them until you’ve tried ’em!

when in hollywood visit universal studios

Then there are the snacks. Universal Hollywood’s snack game is strong. Holy cow. Obviously, you’re going to want to try Butterbeer–perhaps all three varieties.

At Three Broomsticks, snacks deserving of your attention are the potted cream and sticky toffee cake. Both are incredibly delicious, and although you should share them, you probably won’t want to.

Then there are the donuts the size of your head in Springfield, deserving of another holy cow. There are some interesting varieties, but these should be split. After eating the maple bacon one pretty much by myself, my teeth hurt.

One thing you might want to consider is purchasing a refillable Coke Freestyle mug. Depends upon whether you want a lot of Coke or the souvenir mug. Coke Freestyle machines located throughout the park’s restaurants, and normal drink purchases in restaurants are not entitled to refills. Unlike in Florida, there is no Universal Dining Plan at USH.

Seasonal Events

christmas-universal-studios-hollywood-los-angeles-california-bricker

Universal Studios Hollywood does not do much in the way of seasonal events. The one exception to this is Halloween Horror Nights, which you might make an effort to see or to avoid, depending upon your perspective. This is a hard ticket event in which you step onto the set of some of your favorite horror movies, and walking through those sets as actors attempt to scare you. This event is not for children under the age of 13, and is definitely adult in tone.

Halloween Horror Nights are a huge draw for Universal and they definitely attract an adult crowd. If you have no young kids and like horror movies, you’ll probably enjoy this event and find it worth the cost of the ticket. If you have a younger family, you’ll want to avoid it. If you’re traveling during the months of September and October, be mindful of the Halloween Horror Nights schedule. Christmas is celebrated with decorations and Grinchmas entertainment, but there’s nothing that requires advance-planning or around which you should schedule.

I think this is probably covers just about everything most people will need to know when planning a visit to Universal Studios Hollywood as an add-on to your Disneyland or Southern California vacation. If you would like to see some of these topics covered in greater depth, please let me know in the comments.

Your Thoughts

Are you considering visiting Universal Studios Hollywood? If you are a USH veteran, can you fill in any of the ‘gaps’ here or add tips of your own? If you’re a first-timer, is there anything else you’d like to know? Chances are if you have questions still, so does someone else! Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

We had a great time at USH. We bought Early Access to Nintendo World, but so did everyone else. Getting there earlier than we did for rope drop would have given us an additional 15 minutes in the land because their crowd control is not great. My son did all the games first and then we waited about an hour for Bowser’s adventure. We went back the second day with no early access and the lines for the games were too long, he thought, so we just waited for Bowser’s adventure again, about an hour. This was a weekday before school let out, first week of June.

Hi Tom. We’re trying to plan our trip westward for Disney/Universal for August ’23 and the park hours aren’t available yet for Universal Studios Hollywood. Do they typically hold off on posting the hours for more than 1 month out?

Thanks for the info as always. Hope all is well. Jo

Someone Tried To Get Into Universal Studios Hollywood With A 34-Year-Old Theme Park Ticket Weeks After A Disney Fan Tried The Same

A vacation almost four decades in the making.

Universal Studios Hollywood globe

It’s news that’ll probably send every family that’s visited a Disney or Universal park straight to their collective memory boxes and memento drawers. Weeks after a TikTok showed a Disney park goer using a 46-year-old Magic Kingdom ticket to gain entry to the most magical place on earth, a family tried their luck with a Universal Studios Hollywood ticket from 1990. The result was as successful, and as heartwarming, as you would expect.

Reported by NBC 4 LA , the story of the Kramer family starts a little over three decades ago, when horrific weather basically closed down Universal’s shows and rides. With a complaint to Guest Services, Carolyn Kramer and her family were given a voucher for two adults and two children, with no expiration date specified.

With Carolyn Kramer's now-grown son, Daniel, looking to take his own family to the adventure destination, that voucher came to mind. Sure enough, a phone call was all it took to confirm that those admissions were indeed valid, allowing the Kramer family a day of seeing the stars and enjoy the rides. While it was certainly a win for the clan, it's also a pretty big victory for Universal as well.

I know some of you out there are probably thinking, "No it isn't. The company just gave that family a free visit and lost money." But is it really lost money when such a delightful story turns out to be really good press for Universal Destinations & Experiences? To give a family another shot at enjoying their theme park, even almost 40 years after being issued that voucher, is a story that's right up there with returning E.T. to his home planet.

It all ultimately ties into the core ethos of the theme park business, which is that companies such as Disney and Universal ultimately want their guests to be happy. It’s why improvements like a potential new Universal Hollywood hotel are built from time to time, as well as attractions like the upcoming Fast & Furious roller coaster . But, sometimes, that happiness can come from simply going the extra mile to honor a promise made on a day where nothing seemed to go right.

That’s exactly what happened with Carolyn Kramer and her family and, in the process, a new generation of fun seekers have been exposed to the delight that is Universal Studios Hollywood. The memories made from that long promised, and fulfilled, day of adventure are only going to inspire Daniel and his family to want to return.

Which just shows that this is not only a case of customer satisfaction, it’s also an example of good business sense. I’d have to imagine there’s going to be some sort of limit imposed on this loophole in the near future, as everything we know about Epic Universe shows us how new parks don’t come cheap.

So if you’re the type of person who keeps good records, and has some unused theme park tickets lying around, you might want to think about taking that trip real soon. You wouldn’t want to miss out, and you can catch up on what you may have missed in those years is part of the fun. But, also, never underestimate the power of Guest Services. For all you know, a polite complaint about a major Universal attraction's shutdown could pay off in the most surprising way.

Universal Studios Hollywood to celebrate Super Nintendo World’s one-year anniversary

Universal Studios Hollywood is celebrating the one-year anniversary of Super Nintendo World with the grand opening of a new café and the debut of new merchandise.

The all-new Power Up Café on New York Street in the Upper Lot of the theme park will open on Feb. 15.

The café will serve Super Nintendo World-themed food, like Toadstool Café, but will have a brand-new menu.

The Power-Up Café menu will include:

  • Super Mushroom Calzone: Mushroom-shaped calzone filled with pepperoni, sausage, mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce.
  • 1-Up Mushroom Calzone: Mushroom-shaped calzone filled with spinach, green pepper, mushroom, mozzarella cheese and basil pesto
  • Fire Flower Pretzel: Fire Flower-shaped pretzel served with chipotle cheese, mustard and white queso dipping sauces.
  • Super Star Popcorn: Butter popcorn decorated with edible glitter.
  • Super Mushroom Fizz: Lemon-lime soda with strawberry popping pearls and a strawberry Super Mushroom Power-Up.
  • 1-Up Mushroom Fizz: Lemon-lime soda with green apple popping pearls and a lime 1-Up Mushroom Power-Up.
  • Fire Flower Fizz: Lemon-lime soda with orange popping pearls and a mango habanero Fire Flower Power Up.
  • Super Star Fizz: Lemon-lime soda with lemon popping pearls and a mango pineapple Super Star Power Up.

A news release stated that customers can add the Power-Up sugar shapes to the drink to change its color and flavor.

Guests can also use the Universal Studios Hollywood app to order food on mobile.

The new café is a welcome addition to the theme park since Toadstool Café, a popular sit-down restaurant in Super Nintendo World, often runs out of reservations.

Theme park visitors can also purchase a commemorative Golden Power-Up Band. The bands, which can be synced to the theme park app, can be used to collect and store digital coins and keys, prompt unique interactions with characters, and more while in the land.

Six other bands, themed to characters like Mario, Luigi and Peach, are also available for purchase.

However, purchasing a Power-Up band isn’t essential for visitors, Jon Corfino, the vice president of Universal Creative, told KTLA during the land’s grand opening.

“If you come in and don’t have a power band, and you don’t really understand it, you can still engage with the interactives, ride on the Mario Kart ride and understand what your score is,” Corfino said.

A complimentary Super Nintendo World one-year anniversary button will be available while supplies last at the Guest Relations booth in the park.

Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood opened on Feb. 17, 2023, and is the first Super Nintendo World to debut in the United States.

Universal Studios Orlando is expected to have its own Super Nintendo World, which will be a part of the new Epic Universe area in 2025.

When In Southern California Visit Universal City

Bumper : On a blue background, we see the pre-1990 Universal Studios logo in a yellow circle with a black outline. The black outline turns red with a white outline. Surrounding it is "THE ENTERTAINMENT CENTER OF THE WORLD" with two stars fading in. Then it turns to a palm tree with a GlamorTram and a backlot facade. The text "When in Hollywood Visit Universal Studios" appears.

  • There is a short version of the bumper where it starts with the "Visit Universal Studios" slide.
  • On John Landis films, the words "(Ask For Babs)" fade in below.
  • Sometimes, the words "PRODUCED BY" and "CALIFORNIA, U.S.A." are respectively above and below the Universal Studios logo.
  • Early in its life, "CITY" was placed next to "STUDIOS" and it zooms up. The next slide reads "WHEN IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA VISIT UNIVERSAL CITY STUDIOS" with a cameraman and people in it and (very hardly) film actors in it.
  • The short version was parodied on both The Flintstones and its prequel, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas . Here, the text is in stone, reads "WHEN IN HOLLYROCK VISIT UNIVERSHELL STUDIOS", and the design looks different.
  • On the 1981 DiscoVision release of The Wiz and the 1990 MCA Home Video VHS of The Hindenburg , only the first screen is shown.

FX/SFX : Just the fading.

Music/Sounds : None or the closing theme.

Availability :

  • Seen at the end of Universal films in theaters until 1991, such as The Thing and Back to the Future . Also appears on the 1980-83 MCA Videocassette Inc. releases of Same Time, Next Year , Earthquake , Raggedy Man (the 2000 VHS & 2004 DVD releases plaster this with the next bumper), All Night Long , and Winning , the 1984 MCA Home Video VHS reissues of The Funhouse (the original 1981 MCA Videocassette, Inc. VHS release and the 1992 MCA/Universal Home Video Laserdisc release both left it off) and Cat People , the 1991 VHS release of Cape Fear (1962), the 2021 Powerhouse Films Blu-ray of Eye of the Cat , the 2023 Scream Factory Blu-ray of Dr. Giggles , and HBO Now's print of All of Me , which was a Kings Road release. The John Landis variant is retained on all home releases of films that use it (namely National Lampoon's Animal House , The Blues Brothers , An American Werewolf in London , and Into the Night ). This was surprisingly used on theatrical prints of Last Christmas and the 1998 Goodtimes Home Video VHS tapes of The Wiz and The Hindenburg . It also appeared on the 1988 reprint of Raggedy Man, the 2022 Scream Factory 4K UHD Blu-ray of Army of Darkness, and the 2024 Kino Lorber 4K UHD Blu-ray of Kindergarten Cop . It was also used in tandem with the second bumper until 1993.
  • Don't expect to show this bumper at the end of some of 1989-1990 Universal films in theaters with the 75th anniversary teaser. This teaser includes the song "Eyes of the World" by Michael Crawford and composed by Alan Meneken. It was later replaced with James Horner's score and shortened and this time, moved at the beginning in May 1990.

November 22, 1991-April 29, 2011 [ ]

Universal Studios Hollywood & Florida

Bumper : We see searchlights moving on a city skyline with the 1990s Universal Studios theme park logos and the words "Hollywood & Florida" in pink script. The outlining border shines.

  • On Action Man , the words "PRODUCTION FACILITIES PROVIDED BY" are above the logo.
  • On Blues Brothers 2000 , the text fades out and "(ASK FOR BABS)" appears underneath.

FX/SFX : The searchlights moving and the border shining.

Music/Sounds : Same as the 1st bumper.

Availability : Seen at the end of Universal films in theaters from 1991 to 2011, such as Sneakers , Drag Me to Hell , Despicable Me , and the original theatrical prints of Fast & Furious and Fast Five . Also seen on Action Man (1995) and Blues Brothers 2000 . On home video, it can be seen on the 2020-2023 Kino Lorber Studio Classics Blu-rays of Hard Target , Out of Sight , Mystery Men , Man on the Moon , Red Dragon and Raggedy Man (also appeared on the 2000 VHS and the 2004 DVD), the 2022 Shout! Factory Blu-ray of Liar Liar , the 2023 Shout! Factory 4K UHD Blu-ray of Dragonheart , and the 1992 MCA/Universal Home Video VHS, 1998 Goodtimes VHS/DVD, and 2004 Universal Studios DVD of The Funhouse .

Universal Studios Hollywood

Bumper: On a black starry space background, the Universal globe (slighty less-detailed from the 1997 Universal Pictures logo) glows and eases back slightly as a ring revolves with "UNIVERSAL STUDIOS" above it and "HOLLYWOOD" below. The text shimmers while rotating and when it rest, the "UNIVERSAL STUDIOS" shines.

Variant: Another variant has the text read "UNIVERSAL STUDIOS FLORIDA". Seen on the preview of More Barney Songs .

FX/SFX: The ring, the shining and shimmering, the glowing behind the globe.

Music/Sounds: The closing theme to the program.

Availability : Despite being used for 8 months, it's rare. Was seen at the end of The Making of "Terminator 2 3D" , which can be found on the "Ultimate Edition" DVD release of Terminator 2: Judgment Day , released in 2000 by Artisan Entertainment.

September 8, 2000-March 20, 2009; May 13, 2011-February 24, 2012 [ ]

  • At the end of some Universal films in theaters from 2000 to 2009, the word "UNIVERSAL" circles around as the city's name "Orlando" fades in along with the website URL. It was also seen on a 2005 DVD of The Land of Make-Believe .
  • On the 2003 Toyota Corolla commercial promoting Universal Studios, "THEME PARKS" replaces "HOLLYWOOD".

FX/SFX: CGI Animation done by Centropolis Effects in Early 2000.

Availability : Seen at the end of some Universal films in theaters from 2000 to 2009, such as The Watcher , Meet the Parents , How the Grinch Stole Christmas , The Family Man , and Head Over Heels , as well as at the end of films from 2011 to 2012, such as Larry Crowne and Contraband . It was also seen on a Naked Science episode "Earth's Core".

Universal Parks & Resorts (HD)

Bumper : We fade into a far-right zoomed-in shot of the 1997 Universal globe and starfield. A small white flash occurs, and the " UNIVERSAL " text appears from behind the globe and circles around it. As the text rotates to its usual center position, a giant golden arc appears and rotates into the view of the camera. The arc stops at the bottom of the " UNIVERSAL " text with " PARKS & RESORTS " appearing underneath the arc. As the camera pans out to its usual distance, the arc shines and reflects both the globe (which is now moving very slowly) and the text as they cast a dark shadow over it. The URL address (" UNIVERSALPARKSANDRESORTS.COM ", also in gold) narrows in underneath before everything fades to black.

  • Despite the globe, text, and starfield being based on the 1997 Universal Pictures logo, the animation is reminiscent of the one from 1990, albeit faster in speed.
  • The finished product looks identical to the Universal Parks & Resorts print logo that was in use from 2009-2015.

FX/SFX : CGI animation.

Music/Sounds : None.

Availability : Common, although this bumper can be considered a logo of sorts. This debuted at the end of theatrical prints of The Lorax and is usually only seen on theatrical prints (both Domestic and International) of movies released by Universal Pictures after the movie ends; International theatrical prints have it after the dubbing credits. Don't count on seeing this on home media prints or television prints; it also wasn't on the theatrical prints of some movies; examples include Jurassic World , Minions (it used a special logo promoting the attraction Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem ), The Secret Life of Pets 2 , international prints of F9: The Fast Saga (North American prints still have it intact), where it was titled Fast & Furious 9 , and Nope (it has a card saying "Come ride through Jupiter’s Claim at Universal Studios Hollywood"). However, it did appear on the 2021 Scream Factory 4K UHD Blu-ray of Krampus: The Naughty Cut , which marks the first time the bumper was seen on home media. This bumper was also seen on Just Mercy , as Warner Bros. co-owns the rights.

Soon, You’ll Be Able To Visit Shrek’s House (And Toilet) At Universal Studios Florida

Josh Kurp

SomeBODY once told me that Universal Studios Florida is opening a new theme park in 2025. It’s true! But that’s not all they’re up to. This morning, Universal Orlando Resort revealed the first details about DreamWorks Land, which is going up near my beloved E.T. Adventure ride .

The kid-friendly DreamWorks Land is, as you might imagine from the name, based on characters from DreamWorks movies, including Shrek , Puss in Boots , and Kung Fu Panda . Sorry, Flushed Away fans, but you’re out of luck.

Highlights include a meet-and-great with Shrek characters, a Trolls -themed “Trollercoaster,” and “Po’s Kung Fu Training Camp,” featuring “enormous water cannons, dump buckets, giant fans, and more.” It wouldn’t be a Universal attraction without guests getting soak (as someone who always makes time for Jurassic Park River Adventure, I say this with complete affection). I’m particularly intrigued by Shrek’s Swamp for Little Ogres, the first (?) attraction where you can visit a character’s toilet.

This ogre-sized play area features four fun slides, wet play areas, and a playground where guests can climb, bounce, and splash around as well as venture into Shrek’s outhouse.

If DreamWorks Land is a success, and it will be with the Shrek toilet, what movies should be represented in the expansion? I’m hoping for Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit . The Halloween Horror Nights crossover would be a blast. Here’s the full list of attractions:

Shrek’s Swamp Meet : Guests can visit Shrek’s Swamp Meet to interact with beloved characters Shrek, Princess Fiona and Donkey, the noble steed eager to joke around and converse with guests, just outside of Shrek’s cottage. Shrek’s Swamp for Little Ogres : This ogre-sized play area features four fun slides, wet play areas and a playground where guests can climb, bounce and splash around as well as venture into Shrek’s outhouse. Mama Luna Feline Fiesta : The blockbuster film, Puss in Boots 2: The Last Wish, comes to life with this new interactive experience that takes place in Mama Luna’s retirement home for cats. Here, guests get to play with Mama Luna’s many cats on vivid interactive screens activated by buttons, bells, maracas and levers. They might even spot the one and only Puss in Boots himself. King Harold’s Swamp Symphony : Guests can create their own melodious masterpiece as they trigger a choir of ever-changing frog ribbits by continually stomping on an array of interactive lily pads. Swamp Snacks : Families can feast like an ogre at this new kiosk, which will serve scrumptious snacks inspired by Shrek, including Shrekzel, Far Far A Waffle, Frozen Ogre and more.
Trolls Trollercoaster : After strolling through a dazzling marquee starring cherished Trolls characters Poppy, Viva, Tiny Diamond, Satin and Chenille, guests of all ages can take a ride on the iconic Caterbus escaping evil spiders as they speed along a bright orange and yellow track aboard this family-friendly rollercoaster. Poppy’s Playground : Nestled under a giant, 20-foot mushroom is Poppy’s Playground – a shaded play area featuring colorful flowers and bugs with a bountiful array of fun bouncing and climbing structures for the youngest of trolls. Trolls Treats : Poppy’s boombox from Trolls Band Together has been transformed into a playful kiosk that offers up brightly colored Trolls ice cream treats inspired by Poppy and Branch like the pink lemonade-flavored Poppy-licious Pink and huckleberry-flavored BroZone Berry. High Five Hideaway : Cloud Guy hosts this all-new retail location featuring the latest merchandise including apparel, plush and accessories from Shrek, Trolls, Kung Fu Panda, Gabby’s Dollhouse and more.

KUNG FU PANDA

Po’s Kung Fu Training Cam p: Inspired by the hit Kung Fu Panda films, this all-new play area brings the Panda Village to life like never before. Within both wet and dry play areas, guests have the opportunity to help the pandas wash and dry their laundry with enormous water cannons, dump buckets, giant fans and more. Guests will also encounter fun elements throughout the experience, including an interactive gong, mischievous, giggling baby pandas, and oversized merry-go-round noodle bowls from Mr. Ping’s Noodle Shop. Po Live! : This digital, interactive meet and greet experience gives guests the opportunity to interact with the famous Dragon Warrior himself as he teaches them cool Kung Fu moves, cooks some delicious stir fry and babysits his little cousin, Ling Ling…all at the same time.

Universal Studios’ DreamWorks Land is expected to open at the Orlando-based park in summer 2024. Have a look at the concept art:
