Lithuania Tours & Vacations

Trakai castle in early spring, reflected in the lake on a clear day at sunrise, Lithuania

As the first Soviet republic to declare its independence from the Soviet Union in 1990, this slice of fairy-tale Europe – replete with medieval castles and primeval forests – is just begging to be explored

Once the largest empire on the European continent, Lithuania’s history reads at times like a Game of Thrones episode and presents much for those looking to discover a new side of   Europe . With architectural splendors spanning the gothic to renaissance to baroque to bohemian, a hearty national cuisine, and – would you believe it – a stunning stretch of sand dune coast, Lithuania bewitches all those who visit.

Best time to visit lithuania.

The warm summer months of May through to September are the best time to visit Lithuania, although it often rains a lot during July and August.

From November to March it gets very cold, with temperatures often dropping below freezing and heavy snowfalls from December to April.

Geography and environment

Lithuania’s fertile landscape is one of extremely flat low-lying plains, with a lake never too far off – there are more than 4,000 running through the country.

The country has a 60-mile-long stretch of sandy coast, and is one third covered by lush forest.

Top 5 quirky attractions in Lithuania

1. hill of witches.

On a small rise just outside Juodkrante, covered in fir pines and offering pretty views over the Curonian lagoon, is the fantastical and fun ‘Hill of Witches’. A collection of more than 70 wooden carvings and statues sit mischievously, depicting ghoulish witches, devils and other characters from Lithuanian lore and fairy tales. Some of the larger constructions can move and be clambered about on for entertaining photo opportunities. Each year master carvers from around the country converge on the hill to restore the statues, build new ones and possibly – though probably not – drink goat’s blood.

2. Hill of Crosses

A couple of hours drive from Vilnius is the Hill of Crosses, an arresting and poignant testament to Lithuania’s various struggles against foreign powers. Although it’s believed that the first cross was brought to the hill sometime in the mid-19th century, the practice of ascending the hill and leaving behind crosses, crucifixes and Catholic effigies gained considerable momentum during the 1970s and 80s as an act of peaceful defiance against the Soviet occupancy. On three occasions the Soviets razed the hill and destroyed the crosses, only to find them quickly replaced. Also a popular site of pilgrimage, the hill attracts thousands of Catholic faithful each year and there are now an estimated 100,000 crosses at the location.

3. Devil's Museum

Adroitly playing on humanity’s fascination with evil incarnate, The Devil’s Museum in Kaunas holds what is believed to be the world’s largest collection of all things diabolical. The exhibition opened in 1966 and is really more amusing than it is creepy. With the museum’s long-time tradition of accepting and displaying artworks gifted by visitors from across the globe, you’re just as likely to come across his royal Prince of Darkness depicted in an intricate wood carving as a nut-cracker, or in disguise as various political dictators. And for those looking to further descend into the underworld, a bar in the basement provides devilishly enticing vodka libations.

4. The Frank Zappa Statue

When Lithuania achieved its independence from the Soviet Union, the population rapidly set to tearing down all relics and reminders of their period under communist rule – thus leaving an abundance of headless pillars where Lenin and Stalin’s busts had once perched. Whatever was to be done with these? The situation looked hopeless. That is until civil servant and avid Zappa fan Saulius Paukstys came forward with the suggestion of a homage to his musical idol. Given that Zappa had no Lithuanian ancestry, or had even visited the country, local authorities weren’t sold on the idea – not initially, anyway. But when it was argued that Zappa did, after all, have Jewish features and because Jewish history was important to Lithuania… well, the rest is history. Funnily enough, it’s the only Frank Zappa effigy in the world.

5. The Uzupis Constitution

On 1 April 1997, the self-declared Republic of Užupis became Europe’s latest, and most bizarre, breakaway province. The announcement, which took the rest of Lithuania completely by surprise, was thought to be a rather amusing April Fool’s Day joke; however, with the launch of an official constitution, it quickly became apparent that the Republic was here to stay. Visitors can now have their passports stamped and pore over its 41-article constitution, which includes such oddities as ‘Everyone has the right to encroach upon eternity’, and ‘A dog has the right to be a dog’.

Lithuania Travel Guide

Last Updated: August 31, 2023

Historic buildings surrounded by lush, greens forests in Lithuania on a sunny day

Lithuania is the southernmost Baltic state. It’s also the biggest. Like the rest of the Baltics, I think Lithuania is an underrated destination, especially by American tourists who don’t know much about it or its charming (and affordable) neighbors.

Home to just under 3 million people, Lithuania has blossomed from its drab past into a fun, lively, and affordable budget destination.

It offers a mix of history (you can trace it back to 2,000 BCE), beautiful nature (it has flatlands, abundant forests, lakes, beaches, and dunes), and impressive historic architecture.

The crowning jewel of the country is Vilnius, the country’s capital. In addition to its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city is home to a wild and affordable nightlife popular with the backpacker crowd.

In short, Lithuania punches well above its weight and shouldn’t be glossed over by travelers.

This travel guide to Lithuania can give you the tips and tricks you need to plan the ultimate adventure here.

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Lithuania

Historic buildings surrounded by lush, greens forests in Lithuania on a sunny day

1. Explore Vilnius

Lithuania’s capital city has a historic old town, tons of street art, chill cafes, lots of Gothic and medieval architecture, and a wild nightlife. Explore incredible examples of Baroque buildings along the cobblestone streets of the city’s Old Town and don’t miss the Neoclassical Vilnius Cathedral, or St. Saint Anne’s Church if you prefer Gothic architecture. A walk down Poetry Street pays homage to Lithuanian poets and writers, and the entire city is covered in some of Europe’s best street art. Visit the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights (6 EUR) to learn about the city’s dark past and hike up the Hill of Three Crosses for a panoramic view of the city.

2. Visit Kaunas

Kaunas’ student population gives this city a young and energetic vibe. Wander Freedom Avenue (the main shopping street) to take in the city and people-watch. You also should see the Ninth Fort memorial, a genocide memorial and museum (Nazis used the nearby Ninth Fort as an execution site during their occupation). The city is well known for its Interwar era architecture which has been designated as a European Heritage site and you’ll find some of the best examples of Art Deco buildings in Europe here. There’s also a World War II museum (Lithuania was annexed by Germany from 1941-1945) in an old nuclear bunker and a scenic monastery overlooking the sea.

3. Hit the beach in Palanga

Located on the western coast, Palanga boasts long and wide sandy beaches where locals and tourists alike come to relax. White sand and scenic dunes make for a perfect beach day. They are the only beaches of their kind along the Baltic Sea, with 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) to explore. The beach is dotted with resorts, and it’s a popular summer vacation spot for Lithuanians. The town itself is surrounded by forests, and Palanga Park is full of beautiful old-growth trees. The city’s main avenue is filled with bars for those looking to enjoy the nightlife and there’s also tons of green space nearby that’s perfect for hiking and cycling.

4. Hike in Trakai Historical National Park

Opened in 1992, there are over 32 lakes in this park, which is located near Vilnius. It makes a perfect day trip for nature lovers. Be sure to visit Trakai Castle, Lithuania’s iconic 14th-century castle, built on an island in the middle of a lake. An iconic landmark, the well-preserved castle is made from red bricks and offers a peek into the past of Lithuania’s aristocracy. A historic town dating back to the 13th century, a few other castles, and plenty of gorgeous lake views add to the magic. Get Your Guide offers a tour from Vilnius (including an audio guide).

5. See the tallest sand dunes in Europe

Lithuania is home to the tallest shifting sand dunes in Europe. Known as the Curonian Spit, some dunes have been recorded to reach heights of 60 meters (196 feet). Thanks to the specific winds that occur here, the dunes can move at a rate of 15 kilometers (9 miles) per year and in the past have covered entire villages. It’s incredible to see up close!

Other Things to See and Do in Lithuania

1. visit kernave.

Located 35 kilometers (22 miles) from Vilnius, Kernave was the old medieval capital of Lithuania. The area has all kinds of forts, burial sites, and historical and cultural monuments dating back to the late Paleolithic Period. Though the town was destroyed by the Teutonic Knights (a Catholic military order) in the Middle Ages, you can still wander the ruins and learn more about the region’s history. Don’t miss the nearby Kernave Archaeology and History Museum. Admission is 4 EUR.

2. See the Hill of Witches

The Hill of Witches is an outdoor sculpture trail of wooden folk art in Juodkrante, a small town on the Curonian Spit. This art installation brings the forest to life with its creations, taking visitors on a trip through Lithuania’s most popular folk tales and legends. Each of the 80 wooden sculptures was hand-carved by local artists and each sculpture depicts a different character from folk and pagan traditions. Plan to spend around an hour seeing all the sculptures. Admission is free.

2. Visit the Palace of the Grand Dukes

Located in Vilnius, this 17th-century Baroque palace was built for the country’s Grand Dukes. Today, it’s a history and art museum. You can tour stately and ornate ceremonial rooms, see traditional weaponry and armor, and learn about the palace’s history. Most of the palace is a reconstruction as it was first damaged by fire and then later destroyed by the Russians. However, it still does a good job of showing how the ruling class lived during the 17th century and the descriptions are really informative. Admission is 5 EUR.

3. Drink traditional mead

Lithuanians are proud of their traditional beer brewing and there are numerous microbreweries throughout the country. In addition to craft beer, there’s also locally-produced mead, a traditional alcoholic beverage made from fermenting honey. Mead is the oldest alcohol in the world and it’s been said that the mead was so popular in Lithuania in the middle ages that noble families consumed upwards of 30 barrels of it each week. Like beer, expect to pay a few euros for a glass.

4. See the Hill of Crosses

Located 12 kilometers (7 miles) from Siauliai are over 100,000 crosses and religious statues covering an entire hill (93% of the country is Christian and most identify as Catholic). The crosses are believed to have originally been placed there by local Catholics as early as 1831. As the years went by, more and more crosses appeared. The site slowly became a popular place of pilgrimage for Lithuanian Catholics. During the Soviet occupation, the Hill of Crosses became a symbol of national defiance as the Soviets bulldozed the hill three times. The Lithuanian people continued to re-erect the crosses each and every time. These days, visitors often leave a cross, adding to the collection. Admission is free.

5. Visit the Museum of Illusions

This museum opened in 2016 in Vilnius and has some 70 exhibits, including optical illusions and virtual reality. It’s a fun and quirky place to visit, especially if you’re visiting with kids. You can ask the staff to explain the science behind each illusion and exhibit too. Admission is 12 EUR.

6. Explore Anyksciai Regional Park

Easily accessed as a day trip from Kaunas or Vilnius, Anyksciai Regional Park was created in 1992 and spans an incredible 38,000 acres. There are hiking and biking trails, archeological sites, and a super cool 300-meter treetop walking path. The path stands 35 meters (115 feet) above the forest and offers scenic views of the surrounding landscape. There are taller viewing platforms as well that provide 360° panoramic views of the park. Entry is just 1 EUR.

7. Visit the Museum of the Ninth Fort

Like much of Eastern Europe, Lithuania has had a challenging past. In the Museum of the Ninth Fort, you’ll learn about that violent history, from Lithuania’s part in World War I to their 20th-century hard-labor prison camps to the mass killings during World War II. The museum focuses on the atrocities of the wars and their aftermath — and how those atrocities shaped the country and its people. Outside in the museum grounds, there’s a massive 32-meter-tall (104-feet) memorial to the 50,000 Lithuanian Jews who were murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust. Admission is 6 EUR and guided tours are an additional 15 EUR

8. Go birdwatching in Curonian Spit National Park

Located along Lithuania’s coast near Klaipeda, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the best locations in Lithuania for birdwatching. Expect to see mergansers, egrets, cormorants, and more here. The best time to visit is in September during the migration season. Admission to the park is 5 EUR per vehicle in the off-season and 20-30 EUR per vehicle during the summer (depending on the size of the vehicle). Be sure to visit the nearby spa town of Neringa while you’re here.

9. Visit the Devil’s Museum

For something unconventional and off the beaten path, visit the Devil’s Museum in Kaunas. It boasts a spooky collection of over 3,000 paintings, sculptures, and other works of art of the devil. From traditional religious figurines to political works of social commentary, there’s a lot to see here. The collection began in 1966 and has grown as more and more people donate items. Admission is 5 EUR.

10. Explore Uzupis

If you are looking for Lithuania’s art scene, head to the bohemian neighborhood of Uzupis. When the Soviet Union left the country, a group of artists came together to form the ‘Republic of Angels.’ They consider themselves an independent country, set on 148 acres of land. With 120 residents, they even have their own president, bishop, churches, and a grand total of four official flags. It’s sort of Lithuania’s version of Denmark’s Freetown Christiania. Most walking tours stop here, show you around, and highlight the “country’s” history and evolution.

11. Visit the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights

Also known as the Museum of Genocide Victims, this museum was opened in 1992 in Vilnius. It‘s situated in the building where the KGB (the Russian secret police) operated between 1940-1991. The building is a former prison and the place where death sentences were implemented by the Communist regime. Today, it has exhibitions where you can learn about Lithuania’s loss of independence, the Soviet occupation, and the country’s fight for independence.

12. Explore Aukštaitija National Park

North of Vilnius, Aukštaitija National Park is 400 square kilometers (250 square miles) of pine and spruce trees and tons of wildlife (including wild boars). The oldest park in the country, it was established in 1974 and has lots of rivers and lakes (30 and 100 respectively) and numerous hiking trails. There are also a couple of archaeological sites from the 9th-12th centuries here. There’s no fee to enter but there are a few strictly controlled areas that you need a permit to visit or you need to be accompanied by a park employee.

Lithuania Travel Costs

Historic buildings surrounded by lush, greens forests in Lithuania on a sunny day

Accommodation – Hostel dorms start around 13 EUR per night for a 8-12-bed dorm. For a 4-8-bed dorm, expect to pay 16 EUR. Free Wi-Fi and self-catering facilities are standard and most of the party hostels run pub crawls, which often include a free drink. For a private room, expect to pay at least 30 EUR per night.

For anyone traveling with a tent, wild camping is perfectly legal and safe (and even encouraged). If you prefer to camp in a formal campground, they are available around the country and cost from 8 EUR per night for a basic two-person plot without electricity.

Budget hotels start around 30 EUR per night for a double or twin. Expect basic amenities like TV, free Wi-Fi, and a coffee/tea maker. Some include free breakfast.

Airbnb is widely available in the country, with private rooms starting at 25 EUR per night (but average double that price when not booked in advance). For an entire home or apartment, prices start at 50 EUR but generally average double that.

Food – Lithuanian cuisine is heavily influenced by traditional rural fare. Mushrooms (and other foraged foods), beetroot soup, smoked sausages, and herring are all common staples. Pickled foods and potatoes are also super popular. Be sure to try cepelinai , the national dish, which are dumplings made from potatoes with a bacon sauce and sour cream. Potato pancakes and fried cheese curd are two other popular dishes to keep an eye out for as well.

When eating out, expect to pay around 8 EUR for an inexpensive meal of local cuisine. Fast food (think McDonald’s) costs around 6 EUR for a combo meal. A pizza costs between 7-10 EUR. For Thai or Chinese food, expect to pay between 8-13 EUR for a main course.

If you want to splash out, a three-course meal of local cuisine including a drink costs around 40 EUR at a more mid-range restaurant.

Expect to pay around 3.50 EUR for a beer. A latte or cappuccino costs around 2.50 EUR while a bottle of water costs 1.25 EUR.

If you are planning to cook your own food, a week’s worth of groceries costs between 25-40 EUR for basic staples like potatoes, meat, pasta, and seasonal produce.

Backpacking Lithuania Suggested Budgets

On a backpacker budget of 45 EUR a day, you can stay in a hostel dorm, cook all your meals, limit your drinking, take public transportation to get around, and do mostly free activities like hiking and free walking tours. Add 5-10 EUR to your daily budget if you plan on drinking.

On a mid-range budget of 110 EUR per day, you can stay in an Airbnb or private hostel room, eat out for most meals, enjoy a couple of drinks, take the occasional taxi to get around, and do more paid activities like visiting museums.

On a “luxury” budget of 210 EUR or more per day, you can stay in a hotel, eat out for all your meals, drink as much as you’d like, rent a car to get around, and do whatever tours and activities you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in EUR.

Lithuania Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Lithuania isn’t that expensive of a place to visit. As long as you don’t splash out on upscale accommodation and fine dining (or party too much), it’s hard to overspend here. That said, if you want to save some extra money, here are my suggestions:

  • Take a free walking tour – Vilnius offers a handful of free walking tours to get you familiar with the city. I always take one when I get to a new city to learn about the history and culture. Just be sure to tip your guide at the end!
  • Take the bus – FlixBus is a budget-friendly way to get around the country. They have Wi-Fi, electrical outlets, and decent seats for overnight and long-haul journeys.
  • Cook your own meals – Many hostels include kitchen facilities, so if you want to save money make sure you book accommodation with a kitchen. Buying your own groceries may not be as glamorous as going out to eat, but it definitely saves you money.
  • Wild camp – If you really want to save money in Lithuania, wild camping is perfectly legal and safe on public land.
  • Stay with a local – Staying with a local via Couchsurfing is a fun way to not only save money but you’ll get to meet a knowledgeable local who can share their insider tips and advice.
  • Walk everywhere – All of the major cities in Lithuania are quite walkable, so skip the public transportation if you want to save a few euros. Definitely skip the taxis too!
  • Enjoy the free spaces – There are plenty of free parks as well as many free hiking trails around the country. Save your budget and enjoy the outdoors!
  • Bring a water bottle – The tap water here is safe to drink so bring a reusable water bottle to save money and reduce your plastic use. LifeStraw is my go-to brand as their bottles have built-in filters to ensure your water is always clean and safe.

Lithuania has lots of clean, fun, and affordable hostels to stay in. Here are some of my favorite places to stay in Lithuania:

  • Mikalo House (Vilnius)
  • Jimmy Jumps House Hostel (Vilnius)
  • The Monk’s Bunk Kaunas (Kaunas)

How to Get Around Lithuania

Historic buildings surrounded by lush, greens forests in Lithuania on a sunny day

Public transportation – Public transportation in Lithuania is safe, clean, and reliable. Prices vary by city, but tickets in Vilnius cost 0.65 EUR for 30 minutes and 0.90 EUR for 60 minutes. You can get 1-,3-, and 10-day passes for 5 EUR, 8 EUR and 15 EUR respectively. If you pay the driver directly, a one-way fare costs 1 EUR.

Taxi – The starting fare for taxis is 1.30 EUR and then it is 0.60 EUR per kilometer.

Train – Trains in Lithuania are fast and convenient. You can easily reach all the main cities in the country via train. The 70-minute ride from Vilnius to Kaunas costs around 8 EUR while the four-hour ride from Vilnius to Klaipeda costs 22 EUR.

Bus – Buses in Lithuania are a budget-friendly choice for traveling around the country and into neighboring countries. A bus from Vilnius to Kaunas takes just under 90 minutes and costs around 12 EUR. From Vilnius to Klaipeda takes just under four hours and costs 28 EUR. The journey from Vilnius to Riga, Latvia takes 4.5 hours costs 20 EUR.

Flying – There are no domestic flights within Lithuania.

Car rental – Roads in Lithuania are well maintained and car rentals are affordable. Rentals begin at 20 EUR per day for a multi-day rental. While not necessarily cheaper than taking the bus, having a car offers much more freedom. Just make sure you have an International Driving Permit (IDP) as you need one for any car rental in the country.

For the best car rental prices, use Discover Cars .

When to Go to Lithuania

Like its Nordic and Baltic neighbors, Lithuania has short summers and long winters. If you are wanting to get in some beach time then you need to visit between June and August. Even during this time, the temperatures can cool in the evenings so make sure you pack a sweater. Expect daily highs of 20-22°C (68-71°F) during the summer.

To save a bit of money and beat the summer crowds, visit during the shoulder months of April-May or September-October. During these months, it’s still warm enough to spend time outdoors. The national parks are particularly pretty during the autumn.

Winters are cold, with daily temperatures dropping below freezing. While prices are lower, unless you’re here for winter sports, I’d skip a winter visit.

Regardless of the time of year, rain is common in Lithuania so be sure to always keep a raincoat handy. If you plan on hiking be sure to bring a waterproof jacket.

How to Stay Safe in Lithuania

In Lithuania, violent crime is rare. Scams and pick-pocketing are common enough, though, so you’ll want to be vigilant in high-traffic areas in Vilnius, such as bus stations and on crowded public transportation.

If someone strikes up a conversation with you trying to sell something on the street or if young children suddenly approach you, be on alert — someone may be reaching for your wallet while you’re distracted.

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe here, however, the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.).

If you rent a car, don’t leave any valuables in it overnight. Break-ins are rare but it’s best to be safe than sorry.

Overall, scams are rare but, to avoid getting ripped off, you can read about common travel scams to avoid right here.

If you experience an emergency, dial 112 for assistance.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance protects you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. You can use the widget below to find the policy right for you:

Very informative and fun! Gita was such a beautiful soul filled with more information than one can imagine. Unfortunately our trip was cut short due to a major injury. Gita and Alina were more than helpful and accommodating in helping us make arrangements in handling our situation. I am certain they did much more than was necessary. Great full to have met these two. Highly recommend this tour for an authentic and fascinating look at Lithuania.

Lithuania Vilnius Former KGB Headquarters

Baroque Splendour of the Church of St Peter and Paul

You can't miss the grand Church of St Peter and Paul on your Vilnius sightseeing tour. Your Local Specialist will share tales of this Baroque masterpiece, thought to be built on the site of a temple to Milda, the pagan goddess of love. It's got to be the most beautiful and intricate church  in Vilnius and you'll find hundreds of sculptures and mouldings of mythological scenes.

Lithuania Siauliai

Explore the Hill of Crosses in Šiauliai

Get to know the country’s past at the Hill of Crosses at Šiauliai, a powerful symbol of Lithuania’s fight for freedom. For centuries, Lithuanian people placed a cross on a hill in memory of passed loved ones, but when the Soviet regime banned and destroyed the crosses, the local people continued to replace the crosses on this hill in an incredible act of defiance.

Tailor the Lithuania tour of your dreams with our range of Choice Experiences. Choose from adventures like exploring the magical lakeside castle of Trakai and enjoying a traditional Lithuanian folklore show.

Lithuania Trakai

Explore the Enchanting Town of Trakai

There's something really magical about the Trakai, the old Lithuania capital built on water. First, we saw the stunning red-brick castle on an island surrounded by the lake. It's been beautifully restored to its former grandeur and is filled with the history of the Grand Duchy. Next, we discovered the traditional wooden cottages of the Karaites, a unique ethnic group who have been living in Trakai since the 14th century, and don't forget to check out their wonderful crafts.

Lithuania Gediminas Castle Tower

Discover Gediminas Castle Tower

Gediminas Castle Tower is often taken for the symbol of the city of Vilnius and all Lithuania. Make your way along a cobbled walkway to the Upper Castle Tower and be impressed by the breathtaking panorama of Vilnius Old Town. The view stretches from a nearby Vilnelė and Neris river valleys to a new-town district in the southern part of Vilnius.

Lithuania Pilies Street

Stroll Down Pilies Street

This main cobblestone pathway leads right to the Gediminas’ Castle in the Vilnius city center. With examples of some of the best architecture in the capital of Lithuania lining the street and cafe seating spilling out over the sidewalks, Pilies Street is the perfect place to people watch over a cappuccino. Here you can also find some of the best souvenir shops in Vilnius with authentic local handicrafts.

WHAT TO EAT & DRINK IN LITHUANIA

Juicy dumplings, potato pancakes, warm soups and sugary doughnuts… it seems like Lithuanian food was made for comfort and we’ll show you where to find all the local favorites.

Cepelinai are a big deal in Lithuania and you’ll soon quickly find out why. These big dumplings are stuffed with pork, potatoes, dry curd cheese or mushrooms, and smothered in a sauce made from bacon, onions and sour cream. They’re best served piping hot with more fried potatoes and hot gravy, and it will be hard to stop at just one.

Cold Borscht

In Lithuania, if you’ve got beetroot, you make borscht. This bright pink soup is one of the most popular things to eat in summer, thanks to its refreshing flavor. Plus, it’s super nutritious, made with beetroot, cucumbers, hard-boiled eggs and a cultured milk called kefir, which is like a cross between yoghurt and buttermilk.

Bulviniai Blynai

These mouthwatering potato pancakes are a beloved Lithuanian dish. They’re made from a mix of grated potatoes, onions, eggs, flour and a squirt of lemon juice, which is then fried until crispy and golden. Top it off with sour cream, cottage cheese, applesauce, bacon, mushrooms or jam and you’re in potato heaven.

WHEN IS BEST TO VISIT LITHUANIA

Lithuania shines in summer, with longer days and warmer temperatures that are perfect for roaming the cities and wandering the countryside.

Best Time to Explore Lithuania’s Cities

We love visiting Lithuania’s cities in the summer months when the weather is fine, but if you want to skip the crowds visit from April to May or September to October.

Best Time to See Birds in Lithuania

Lithuania is famed for its superb birdwatching and if you want to see some up close, you're best to visit in spring or autumn from March to April or September to October.

Best Time to Visit Lithuania’s Lakes

The best time to experience Lithuania's sandy shores and pretty lakes of places like Trakai is the summer months from June to August.

HOW TO TRAVEL RESPONSIBLY IN LITHUANIA

The best way to eat Lithuanian food is at local restaurants and cafes. You’ll support local farmers and get to learn about their fascinating food traditions.

Top Lithuania Travel Packages

Lithuania in 7-10 days, one week in lithuania.

Because Lithuania is such a small country, you’ll be able to fit in plenty of its top experiences and attractions in one week. You may not have as much time for extended stays in larger cities such as Vilnius or for exploring each of the incredible outdoor spaces that the country has to offer, but you’ll still be able to get a wonderful taste of Lithuania’s culture and landscapes.

Day 1-2 : Arrive in Vilnius . Spend a couple days exploring the Old Town, including the Vilnius Cathedral, the Gediminas Tower, and the Gate of Dawn — the city’s old defensive structure. There’s plenty of museums and delicious restaurants and cafes to choose from in Vilnius , so treat yourself to a traditional Lithuanian meal.

Day 3 : Travel to Kaunas , stopping in Trakai and Kernave on the way. It’s only about a two hour drive, so you’ll have plenty of time to explore the Trakai Historical National Park, the town of Trakai, and the Trakai Island Castle. A little ways north lies of the village of Kernave, a 13th century UNESCO World Heritage Site and the location of an archaeological site that contains human settlements dating back to 9000 BCE.

Day 4 : Spend the morning exploring Kaunas, Lithuania’s second largest city. Walk through the beautiful Old Town and and see the Gothic Kaunas Castle, which overlooks the Nemunas River. That afternoon, drive to Klaipeda on Lithuania’s coast.

Day 5: Explore Klaipeda’s Old Town and fresh sea air, and optionally take a day trip to nearby Palanga, about thirty minutes outside of Klaipeda. Palanga is known for its beautiful beaches and and Amber Museum, which is housed within a 19th century palace and contains thousands of amber pieces.

Day 6 : From Klaipeda, take another day trip south to explore the Curonian Spit and Curonian Lagoon. Explore the park’s beautiful sand dunes as well as the Hill of Witches at the nearby village of Juodkrante. Optionally, you can also visit Nida, another of Lithuania’s resort towns located in the middle of the Curonian Spit.

Day 7 : Leave Klaipeda and drive northeast to Siauliai, where you can explore the town as well as the nearby Hill of Crosses.

Day 8 : From Siauliai, head back to Vilnius to catch your flight home. Optionally, you can make a slightly longer detour to explore the village of Anykščiai and the Anykščiai Treetop Walking Path.

Lithuania and Beyond: Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, & Russia/Finland

For those with a little more time and the desire to travel further afield, this 14-day sample itinerary of the Baltic region is perfect. It’s easily adaptable to different schedules and interests, so let yourself be inspired!

Day 1-2: Arrive in Vilnius , Lithuania, and spend a few days exploring the city’s beautiful Old Town cathedrals and museums. If you’re interested, see the city and countryside from a hot air balloon!

Day 3 : From Vilnius , head to the Trakai Historical National Park where you can explore the village of Trakai and the Trakai Island Castle. Then make your way to Kaunas , Lithuania’s vibrant second-largest city.

Day 4 : After a morning in Kaunas , head to the Curonian Spit, where you can get some fresh seaside air and walk through the fascinating Hill of Witches within the town of Juodkrante. Spend the night in Nida, a resort town located on the Curonian Spit.

Day 5: From Nida, head north to Riga , the capital of Latvia . On the way, stop in the  town of Siauliai, where you can explore the nearby Hill of Crosses.

Day 6-7 : Spend a few days exploring Riga , the largest capital of the Baltic region. Enjoy its beautiful architecture, stunning cathedrals, and unique neighborhoods.

Day 8 : Take a day trip from Riga to the nearby Gauja National Park, Latvia’s largest national park. Gauja National Park is highly diverse and well-protected by the government, making it the perfect destination for a day in the outdoors.

Day 9 : From Riga , head to Tallin , the capital of Estonia . On the way, stop in Parnu, Estonia’s fourth largest city and beautiful seaside resort town.

Day 10-11 : Spend a couple days in Tallin . Explore its Medieval Old Town, as well as its many beautiful parks and museums. Make sure to try some local Estonian cuisine at one of Tallin’s cafes or restaurants.

Day 12 : From Tallin , head east to St. Petersburg , Russia . This is about a five hour drive, so be ready for a longer day of travel and beautiful views of the countryside and Baltic Coast .

Day 13-14 : Spend your final two days exploring stunning St. Petersburg , full of bridges, canals, and awe-inspiring architecture. Optionally, take a day trip to Peterhof, one of the Romanov’s surviving summer palaces, before flying out of St. Petersburg.

Alternate Day 13-14 : Take a ferry from Tallin to Helsinki , Finland . While Finland is technically a Scandinavian country rather than a Baltic one, it’s still a very easy journey from Tallin . Spend a few days here enjoying the views of the harbor, charming architecture, and many wonderful museums and cafes.

Are you planning to visit Lithuania and wonder what there is to see and do (in a week)? Whether you only have time for a flying visit or three weeks to explore all three Baltic countries we’ve got THE itinerary for you.

Most people don’t know much about Lithuania , the southernmost of the three states, commonly known as The Baltics . Lithuania actually once was the largest country in Europe . No joke. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania reached from the shores of the Baltic all the way to the Black Sea. Lithuania was also the first of the Baltic states to regain independence after 40+ years of Soviet occupation, on 11 March 1990. Naturally, Lithuania has historic sites galore.

Three reasons why you should visit Lithuania

  • You’ll probably know: it’s super easy to get here from anywhere in Europe . Lithuania boasts no less than three international airports: in the capital Vilnius , the country’s second-largest city Kaunas and in Palanga on the Baltic coast.
  • Lithuania is right in the centre of Europe . It’s true. Scientists have determined that the geographical centre of the continent is approximately 30 kilometres north of Vilnius .
  • If you’re into history and the great outdoors as much as quirky things (for example, a country within a country or a pilgrimage site with thousands of crosses in the middle of nowhere) Lithuania ticks all the boxes.

Map of Accommodation, Points of Interest, Eateries and Transport

Below is a map of the recommended accommodation, points of interest, eateries and transport terminals/stops mentioned in this article.

Our itinerary assumes that you fly into Vilnius (IATA Code: VNO) and, after your week in Lithuania , continue your travels to Latvia and Estonia overland.

If you don’t have time to visit Latvia , your closest airport from Šiauliai is still the Latvian capital Riga (IATA Code: RIX, 130 kilometres/ approximately 2 hours north of Siauliai ). Very conveniently, most buses from Siauliai stop at Riga airport before they head to the main bus terminal in the city centre.

Alternatively, you can return home from the following international airports in Lithuania :

  • Kaunas (IATA Code: KUN) – 140 kilometres / approximately 3.5 hours south of Siauliai
  • Palanga (IATA Code: PLQ) – 150 kilometres /  approximately 4 hours west of Siauliai
  • Vilnius – 210 kilometres / approximately 4-5 hours southeast of Siauliai .

To organise your mode of transport between the three stops (and your day trips from Vilnius and Kaunas ) check out the transport section in our Baltics post .

But first, let’s talk about what there is to see and do…

How much does it cost to explore the Baltics?

Visiting the Baltic countries cost us on average EUR45.17/USD50.54 per person per day. Check out our individual country costs here:

Highlights of Vilnius (and surrounds)

With two full days in the Lithuanian capital, we recommend starting your day with a free walking tour . The tour will introduce you to Vilnius ’ Old Town (going past the University and through the streets of the former Jewish Ghetto) and take you through the bohemian self-proclaimed Republic of Užupis . It starts at 1030h from the Gediminas statue at Cathedral Square and takes approximately 2.5 hours.

The Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights - gruesome but our favourite museum in Vilnius

To finish your first day in Vilnius on a more positive note, head to Gediminas Castle Tower to learn more about the Baltic Way.

The views over Vilnius from Gediminas Tower are already pretty cool but for a different perspective, climb the Bell Tower of the Cathedral and/or the Bell Tower of St John’s Church .

If you’re into Soviet-era memorabilia, pop by the Flea Market store in the Old Town (Pilies Gatve 6) on your way.

Itineraries for Independent Travellers

So you are interested in travelling to one or more of the Baltic States? We have developed the ultimate three-week road and rail trip itinerary to help you explore and learn about the people, culture , food and history .

On your second day, we suggest you stock up on some fresh local produce at Hales Market (opens at 0700h, closed on Mondays) and head out of town. While you can visit all the below destinations by public transport, we recommend you hire a car for the day, as this enables you to drive one big loop (rather than having to return to Vilnius in between).

First up, you drive approximately 32 kilometres / approximately 45 minutes north. The Geographical Centre Of Europe is located just outside the village of Purnuškės (if you travel by bus take the bus towards Biržai and get off at Radžiuliai, from there it’s only a short walk to the site).

While not much more than a memorial with marker flags and a visitor centre, if you’ve visited the Equator near Quito in Ecuador , the Center of Europe is pretty cool too.

Geographical centre of Europe near Vilnius

The Geographical Centre of Europe is just north of Vilnius and can be visited on a day trip

Next, you head 40 kilometres / approximately 45 minutes west. Kernavė was the medieval capital of Lithuania , and like Vilnius ’ old town, it is a UNESCO world heritage site . Don’t expect well-preserved medieval architecture though. Given ancient Kernavė was built from wood, all that’s left are the hills on which the wooden fortresses once stood. But there is an interactive museum that brings the city’s story to life. If you travel by bus, you need to return from Radžiuliai to Vilnius and take the bus from there to Kernavė.

Kernave hillforts Lithuania

Located only 40km north-west of Vilnius , Kernavė was the medieval capital of Lithuania

If you’ve still got time/energy, you can head to Trakai (30 kilometres / approximately 45 minutes drive south of Kernavė). We didn’t visit the castle as we’d heard that it is too expensive for what it is. But the island and surrounding area form a National Park and are worth a visit.

While you can visit Trakai by bus/train, if you come from Kernavė, you’ll have to travel (again) via Vilnius . Alternatively, you can stop in Trakai on your way to Kaunas .

Food and Drinks in Lithuania

  • To try more Lithuanian cuisine at reasonable prices, head to one of the Etno Dvaras outlets in Vilnius or to Bernelių užeiga in Kaunas . Unfortunately, we didn’t experience the most efficient or friendly service there (but it might be different for you).
  • For a Soviet-era bistro experience and cheap but tasty food, pop by Sultiniai in Vilnius (Jogailos Gatve 8) or Prie Pasto in Kaunas (Laisvės Aleja 102 – enter through E. Ožeškienės Gatve 10).

Baltic Soups and Stews

For a Soviet-era bistro experience and cheap but tasty food, head to Sultiniai in Vilnius

Highlights of Kaunas (and surrounds)

A bit rougher around the edges, Kaunas ( Lithuania ’s second largest city) often gets overlooked in favour of the capital or Klaipeda on the Baltic Coast. We really liked it though. Maybe because its Old Town is smaller but equally beautiful as Vilnius ’. Maybe because its colourful trolley buses brighten up the streets or maybe because of its abundance of street art and wooden houses.

Kaunas Street Art

Can you tell that there is a friendly rivalry between Vilnius and Kaunas when it comes to street art?

Kaunas Castle

What many don't know: Kaunas was actually Lithuania 's capital from 1919 to 1940, when Vilnius was occupied by Poland

As with Vilnius , we recommend spending your first day in Kaunas , exploring the city on foot. This time with a self-guided walking tour . We combined ours with a tour of Kaunas’ street art .

Make sure you visit Kaunas Castle and stop by the House of Perkūnas (it’s gorgeous on the outside, but there isn’t really anything inside worth the entry fee). To finish off your morning, and to learn more about Kaunas ’ time as the capital, visit the interactive museum in the Historical Presidential Palace .

Perkunas House, Kaunas, Lithuania

Built in the 15th century, the House of Perkūnas is one of the oldest houses in Kaunas

After lunch, visit the only museum in the world dedicated to the devil. Yep, that’s right. What started as a collection of gifts a famous Lithuanian artist received, is now the largest of its kind in the world. Unfortunately as of June 2023, Žmuidzinavičius Museum, also known as the Devil Museum is temporarily closed.

From the museum, head up the small hill (on foot or via the super short cable car ride) to Christ’s Resurrection Church for 360-degree views over the city from its terrace (as well as songs and organ music if your visit coincides with a service).

Christ Resurrection Church, Kaunas

The terrace roof of Christ's Resurrection Church offers 360 degree views over Kaunas - if the weather is nice

If you’re here between September and June, try and time your visit with a home game of Žalgiris Kaunas , Lithuania ’s best basketball team. Tickets at Žalgiris Arena can be booked online .

In the morning, we recommend a visit to the Memorial Complex of the Ninth Fort . Originally part of the fortification system surrounding Kaunas when it was located at the Western border of Tsarist Russia , the Ninth Fort was only used as a military installation until the end of WWI. During Kaunas ’ time as Lithuania ’s capital, it was transformed into a hard labour prison. And during the first period of Soviet occupation between 1940 and 1944, prisoners transferred through the fort on their way to the Labour Camps in Siberia. During the Nazi occupation of Lithuania , as many as 50,000 people were killed here.

A well-curated museum provides in-depth information on all four distinct periods in the history of the fort. For more information check out this excellent post about the Ninth Fort Memorial Complex .

Kaunas Ninth Fort

Originally part of the fortification system surrounding Kaunas , 50,000 people were killed at the Ninth Fort during the Nazi occupation

To balance the morning experience, we suggest you spend your afternoon visiting the Spa Town of Birštonas . Birštonas is easily reachable from Kaunas (50 kilometres/ approximately 45 minutes south) by bus.

Walk through its Central Park and along the Neman River, enjoy the water sounds and salty air at the Druskupis Mineral Water Evaporation Tower or book a spa treatment. If you decide to head here for a spa treatment , you could even shorten your stay in Kaunas to two days (and stay one night in Birštonas instead).

Šiauliai and the Hill of Crosses

We first heard about the Hill of Crosses from Atlas Obscura and were intrigued. Having completed our first pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain , we wanted to experience the Hill of Crosses by ourselves.

While in the middle of nowhere, 12 kilometres north of the city of Siauliai , the pilgrimage site is not difficult to reach by public transport. Buses leave from Siauliai ’s bus station, and the timetable published online seems to be (kept) up to date.

Once you get off the bus at Domantai, you walk for two kilometres along a dead flat road. About halfway in, you can make out the hill in the distance on the right (and a parking lot with tourist buses on the left). With the four-kilometre return walk and spending 45 to 60 minutes at the Hill of Crosses, consider about 90 minutes between the bus times.

Hill of Crosses

Visiting the Hill of Crosses north of Šiauliai is free but you need public transport (or a car) to get there

As for the experience: There are thousands and thousands of crosses of all shapes and sizes. Some strongly anchored in the ground, some leaning or hanging on others. A forest of weathered wooden crosses interspersed by new wooden ones, shiny (and rusty) metal ones…

My favourite was a small cross with Noah’s Ark painted on it. Innocent like a child, it stood out among all the greyness surrounding it.

I’m glad I went, and I could have easily stayed longer. Paul felt a bit sad after visiting the site. I just felt a sense of total peace.

SafetyWing

Walking on the path at Hill of Crosses allowed us to reflect on humanity

Siauliai itself is less exciting. The Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul, about 10 minute’s walk north of the bus station, is worth a visit. The city also has a random collection of museums, dedicated to photography, bicycles and chocolate ( Siauliai had factories making both), and even angels. So, if you’ve got some spare time, take your pick.

Alternatively, if there are afternoon buses to Riga when you visit, you could head there earlier (and skip the night in Siauliai ).

Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul, Siauliai, Lithuania

If you have spare time in Šiauliai you may want to visit the Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul and/or one of the city's quirky museums
