Christina Anstead is a whiz at finding great houses. The star of Christina on the Coast and Flip or Flop knew exactly what she and her husband, Ant, wanted when they were looking for a place in Newport Beach, CA, last year. “Single level, preferably farmhouse style, and I’ve always loved a black-and-white home,” she says. And that’s exactly what they got. It didn’t need a ton of work—just enough for them to put their stamp on the place, blending their different styles. “I’m bohemian, he’s more industrial,” says Christina. The result: a winning marriage of black and white and natural wood tones. Take a look!

John Saladino's Timeless Montecito Home

John Saladino's California home , which was the cover star of our March-April 2017 issue, is a love letter to beautiful architecture, decorating, gardens, and furniture design. Many of his idyllic rooms look like still-life paintings and feature incredible antiques, sculptures, and global textiles. When designing this pool and outdoor space, Saladino said he was inspired by ancient Greek and Roman nymphaea—natural grottoes said to be homes of nymphs. Magical, indeed!

Tour a Striking New York Home That’s Not Your Typical Brooklyn Town House

The constraints of a Brooklyn town house renovation might, at first glance, seem rigid and prescriptive—stacked floors, each long and narrow, bound by four exterior walls, the front one often landmarked. Inside, the primary challenge is universal: how to best bring light into that interior core. But as the architecture firm Leroy Street Studio was recently reminded, the idiosyncrasies of this classic building type can be as varied and compelling as its inhabitants.

Six years ago, the Leroy Street team was approached by Jeanne and Dennis Masel, a creative and philanthropic couple who had recently purchased a historic home in Park Slope. Originally designed by architect Fred W. Eisenla, the 1910 property hews to the British Regency style, with bowed windows, a limestone façade, a central entrance, and a street-level stoop. This was not, in other words, your typical brownstone.

Nor were the Masels your typical clients. In describing their vision for the home, Dennis, a free-spirited entrepreneur, musician, and film producer, is quick to invoke rock ‘n’ roll and fun as guiding principles. Jeanne, the founder of Art for Change , brought her own yen for whimsy and adventure, not to mention a dynamic trove of contemporary works. “Our architectural ambition had to match her commitment to art,” says Leroy Street partner Shawn Watts. “The house was already beautiful on the street but it didn't have the spatial complexity that the clients needed for their collection.”

So he made a bold pitch: Why not completely reimagine the rear half of the house, replacing three levels with two so as to yield high ceilings and ample wall space? Whereas the lower half of that pair now contains the kitchen, dining area, and sunken family room, the upper comprises the formal living room and library. “That was our big move,” Watts explains of the staggered floor plates, noting that “by making this surgical intervention we then had to reunite the front and back.”

To do so they created a sculptural but functional staircase, with fluid curves that shift to reveal a skylight only upon ascent. Its glow, however, is felt throughout the house, fulfilling the elusive promise of a bright core. Sun, all the while, bathes the family room and library thanks to sliding window walls. “It feels like you are in the garden,” says Watts. Those blurred indoor/outdoor lines continue to the primary suite, which has a terrace of its own, as well as to the penthouse addition, which can open up to fresh air on two sides.

Art, of course, remains the focus. The mud room, accessible via a street-facing side entrance, was designed specifically for a circular work by Takashi Murakami. Framed by an archway, it now pops against magenta walls—a hue echoed in the Tracey Emin neon piece at the base of the staircase. Elsewhere are works by past collaborators with Art For Change, which partners with nonprofits to raise funds through the sale of prints. Those include the dining area’s paintings by Danielle Orchard and Hyegyeong G. Choi, and the primary bath’s site-specific mosaic by Summer Wheat. “We talked a lot about having the unexpected around each corner,” Dennis reflects of the overall mix, which remains in flux as the couple rotates pieces in and out of storage.

The decor stays true to that spirit of surprise. Over the course of the project, furnishings evolved into a collaboration between Sybille Schneider, Leroy Street’s Director of Interior Design, and the textile maven Christine Van Der Hurd, a longtime friend of the clients whose vibrant fabrics informed the house’s punchy palette—from the staircase’s pink runner to the primary suite’s upholstered headboard and walls. The screening room, where Dennis regularly retreats to watch films for work, is especially bold, its ceiling slicked in high-gloss blue, complementing the geometric carpet. Like that color scheme, the surround sound is not for the faint of heart. After watching Top Gun: Maverick as a family, Dennis recalls the couple’s young daughter noting, “Daddy, I loved the way the room shook.”

Put simply, this place has verve. Which was precisely the couple’s hope as they set out to create a home that would inspire their young family of three. “This house has so many good spaces for reflection,” says Dennis, musing on days spent migrating from penthouse office to screening room to kitchen, a showstopper space he describes as “a dream I never dreamed I’d dream.” When he’s practicing the drums in the library, Jeanne can retreat to her bedroom workspace or else to that magical Summer Wheat tub, a source of continuous delight. Their daughter and her friends, meanwhile, will pack into the sunken family room or around the Pac-Man machine. “It’s all,” Dennis says, “designed for creativity.”

Frank Lloyd Wright house in Michigan hits market at $790K; Oregon’s is open to the public

Frank Lloyd Wright , the most famous architect in the U.S., designed one structure in Oregon, the Gordon House , which is the only Wright residence open to the public in the Pacific Northwest. Guided tours of the interior of the two-story house with decorative geometric fretwork and walls of glass rising 12 feet to the ceiling are offered throughout the year ($20, thegordonhouse.org ).

The cedar-and-concrete-block house in Silverton, at 869 W. Main Street near the Oregon Garden , has concepts Wright championed that are still valued today such as materials that mirror the landscape, energy-saving radiant-heat concrete flooring and a great room.

What the Gordon House doesn’t have, like so many treasured Wright buildings, is a “no trespassing” sign or “for sale” sign. Across the U.S., Wright dwellings are on the market , asking up to almost $9 million .

Samir Mezrahi, whose humorous Zillow Gone Wild postings on Instagram , Twitter and Facebook target “atrocious homes, wacky decorative taste and landscaping anomalies,” has taken a whack at a Wright house for sale in Kalamazoo, Michigan. “Looks like a beautiful rest stop” he writes under a photo of the 1949 Ward and Helen McCartney House , which was formed by two triangles on a 1.12 acre property adjacent to a nature preserve.

The asking price for 2662 Taliesin Drive in Kalamazoo’s Parkwyn Village is $790,000. An offer was accepted Wednesday, March 27, according to listing agents Fred Taber of Chuck Jaqua Realtor and Victoria Krause Schutte of @properties and Christie’s International Real Estate.

”Feels like a steal at under a million tbh!! Should we start a gofundme or something to buy it and make it a Zillow Gone Wild house?” wrote Mezrahi.

The single-level, 1,671-square-foot residence of Navy veteran Helen McCartney, who lived there for more than 50 years, is an example of Wright’s Usonian approach to architecture, which he defined as living in harmony with the land in the United States of North America (USONA). He envisioned mass producing similar homes to have an organic appearance as if rising “out of the ground and into the light.” His Usonian designs, as seen at the McCartney House as well as the Gordon House, typically had a flat roof with generous, shade-making overhangs.

The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation described the McCartney House in Parkwyn Village as “adventurous and unique.” The four-bedroom home, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is being sold with original furniture and blueprints.

Wright designed three other dwellings in Parkwyn Village, but “his concepts influenced most of the homes in the neighborhood,” according to the Wright foundation. The street name Taliesin Drive refers to Wright’s winter home and desert laboratory, Taliesin West, a UNESCO World Heritage site and National Historic Landmark in Scottsdale, Arizona, which is open to the public .

The Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy maintains a list of Wright-designed homes on the market across the country. Asking prices reflect the escalated value of his work:

  • The horseshoe-shaped, 1955 Tirranna (“running water”) mansion in New Canaan, Connecticut, with 7,000 square feet of living space sold in January 2024 for $6 million .
  • The Richard Lloyd Jones House in Tulsa, Oklahoma, built in 1929 of alternating piers of square glass windows and concrete “textile” blocks, is for sale at $4.5 million.
  • The last house the architect designed before he died in 1959, the circular Norman Lykes House , constructed of colored concrete block to blend with the Phoenix Mountains Preserve , is for sale at $8,950,000.
  • And the Fawcett House , designed by Wright in 1955 to showcase seamless living indoors and out, sits on 76 acres in California’s Central Valley city of Los Banos, and is listed at $3.7 million.

Oregon’s Wright house

The 1957 Gordon House in Silverton was saved from demolition and moved near the Oregon Garden where it was reconstructed and opened to the public in March 2002. Since then, more than 100,000 visitors have explored Wright’s handsome approach to functional, affordable living.

Starting April 3, guided, 45-minute tours of the Gordon House are offered at noon, 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday (for more information: 503-874-6006, [email protected] ).

Donations, admission and merchandise sales support the nonprofit Gordon House Conservancy’s educational and preservation mission. The Gordon House Conservancy and volunteers care for the house and grounds.

In 1957, while Wright was still creating the exalted Guggenheim art museum in New York City, he accepted a $25,000 commission to design a modern house for Conrad (”Ed”) and Evelyn Gordon on their farmland alongside the Willamette River near Wilsonville.

At the time, Wright was almost 90 years old and had spent more than two decades developing Usonian suburban housing with high architectural quality at a moderate price.

The Gordon House was completed in 1963, four years after Wright died. Floor-to-ceiling doors in the great room opened to the landscaped grounds . Each of the two upstairs bedroom balconies originally faced the Willamette River or Mount Hood.

Perforated boards, or fretwork, screens were made to draw in light, ensure privacy and serve as an economical alternative to draperies or stained art glass, according to historians who successfully nominated the Gordon House to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

The open floor plan concept developed by Wright is evident in the great room, which has dining and living areas as well as a concrete-block fireplace and a library with built-in seating.

Evelyn Gordon, a weaver and artist , was a widow when she died in 1997 and the property, which had years of deferred maintenance, was sold to new owners who tried to get the Gordon House removed from the Clackamas County List of Historic Structures to have it demolished.

Instead, the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy , a Chicago-based organization devoted to preserving Wright’s built legacy, negotiated an agreement with the owners to donate the significant dwelling.

A stipulation of the agreement required the 2,133-square-foot house be relocated within 105 days, starting Nov. 30, 2000. The structure was carefully dismantled by preservationists and volunteers, and the four sections were moved 26 miles south to the Oregon Garden site over three days, arriving March 11, 2001, four days ahead of the deadline, say historians.

The original north-south orientation was preserved and interior walls are intact, as are all doors, cabinets, wood trim, furniture and shelving. The Gordon House “continues to present an accurate representation of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Usonian house design and subsequent construction for Conrad and Evelyn Gordon,” say historians.

Visitors can see every room, including the kitchen — what Wright called the “workspace” — and his ideas of paneled refrigerator doors, under-cabinet lighting and other features for cooking efficiency, comfort and speed that continue to influence kitchen design today .

Ousted former Republican leader in the House of Representatives Liz Cheney has already said she’ll do everything possible to keep Donald Trump out of the White House.

Now, she’s hitting the road. And drawing good-sized crowds, too.

Cheney spoke at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, for “An Evening with Liz Cheney” Wednesday at the Knapp Center. According to the campus’ website, the hall can seat more than 6,400 people and from the looks of it, Cheney filled the house.

Cheney didn’t exactly lose her 2022 GOP primary against Harriet Hageman by 37 votes. Cheney, who was vice chair of the Select Committee to Investigate the Jan. 6 attack on the United States Capitol, lost in a landslide by 37 percentage points. More than 162,300 people voted for either candidate.

But Cheney is on the speaking tour and will spend time in battleground states, including a stop in Philadelphia in September.

Earlier this month, after Trump’s GOP rival, Nikki Haley, withdrew from the Republican presidential primary , Cheney announced her latest effort: a Political Action Committee aimed at helping President Biden get re-elected.

The PAC is named “The Great Task,” after a speech given by Abraham Lincoln.

According to the PAC’s website: “Speaking at Gettysburg, Lincoln described our Great Task, ‘that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain. That this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom and that government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from this earth.’”

Cheney chaired the House Republican Conference, serving in the third-highest position in the House Republican leadership from 2019 to 2021.

THE VICE PRESIDENT:  Good afternoon, everyone.  I first want to thank the governor, Tim Walz, for your leadership both for this beautiful state, but nationally you’ve been a great friend and advisor to the President and me.  And thank you for all of that. GOVERNOR WALZ: Thank you. THE VICE PRESIDENT:  Congresswoman — I mean, just an extraordinary leader.  She is strong, she is powerful, she is committed, and always working on behalf of the people of the state.  And I thank you, and thank you for traveling with me to be here today.  REPRESENTATIVE MCCOLLUM:  It was an honor. THE VICE PRESIDENT:  And, Mayor, thank you, as well.  We shared a lot of stories about your leadership.  And I know that you have a lot of support here in the city for the work that you have done.  Thank you for that. So, many of you have asked why am I here at this at — this facility, in particular.  And I will tell you, it is because, right now in our country, we are facing a very serious health crisis.  And the crisis is affecting many, many people in our country, most of whom are, frankly, silently suffering after the United States Supreme Court took a constitutional right that had been recognized from the people of America, from the women of America. In states around our country, extremists have proposed and passed laws that have denied women access to reproductive healthcare.  And the stories abound.  I have heard stories of — and have met with women who had miscarriages in — in toilets.  Women who were being denied emergency care because the healthcare providers there, at an emergency room, were afraid that because of the laws in their state, that they could be criminalized, sent to prison for providing healthcare. So, I’m here at this healthcare clinic to uplift the work that is happening in Minnesota as an example of what true leadership looks like, which is to understand it is only right and fair that people have access to the healthcare they need and that they have access to healthcare in an environment where they are treated with dignity and respect.  And please do understand that when we talk about a clinic such as this, it is absolutely about healthcare and reproductive healthcare.  So, everyone get ready for the language: uterus.  (Laughter.)  That part of the body needs a lot of medical care from time to time.  (Laughter.) Issues like fibroids — we can handle this — breast cancer screenings, contraceptive care — that is the kind of work that happens here, in addition, of course, to abortion care. So, to have laws in states that have caused clinics like this to shut down so that women have no access within any reasonable distance of where they live to get this vital care that is necessary to address their health needs and concerns. So, again, I say thank you to the governor, the congresswoman, the mayor, and the doctor and all those who work here, and the staff.  This work includes having people here who go out and talk to young people — our young people in high schools.  And sadly, in so many places around our country, Sex Ed is a thing of the past, which leaves our young people to learn about their bodies and reproductive systems on social media — often with a profound amount of misinformation, which leaves them confused about what is happening to their own bodies. The work that happens here is about providing assistance to women who do not live in the state of Minnesota, because, sadly, this state exists in a neighborhood where laws have been passed to deny people reproductive healthcare.  And so, women have to travel here.  You know, the majority of women who receive an abortion are mothers.  God help her that she’s got affordable childcare.  If she is working, God help her she’s got paid family leave so she can figure out how is she going to get to the place that will provide her the care she needs.  Well, the work that happens in a clinic like this includes answering those questions for someone who might be in great distress, letting her know what is available to her in terms of transportation, in terms of housing or a hotel, what is available to her in terms of assistance for her childcare needs. So, I’ll close with this.  In this environment, these attacks against an individual’s right to make decisions about their own body are outrageous and, in many instances, just plain old immoral.  How dare these elected leaders believe they are in a better position to tell women what they need, to tell women what is in their best interest.  We have to be a nation that trusts women.  (Applause.) And with that, I will introduce this extraordinary healthcare provider.  And, Doctor, please.  DR. After the Dobbs decision a year and a half ago, Minnesota has become a bastion of access for abortion care.  But abortion rights are not only a Minnesota issue; it is a national issue.  Our Planned Parenthood has seen a 25 percent increase in abortions here in Minnesota since Roe was overturned.  We’ve seen nearly 100 percent increase in patients coming here from outside of our state.  This is not by accident.  Surrounding states have been limiting and banning abortion, while Minnesota, with the help of our governor, has been increasing access.  Since Roe was overturned, I’ve cared for patients from everywhere, from nearby states like South Dakota and North Dakota and Wisconsin, but from far-away states like Texas, Alabama, Wyoming, Florida, Oklahoma, Missouri, and the list goes on.  I’ve seen patients who’ve flown from places like Louisiana only to have me tell her that her complex pregnancy condition would keep her from having her abortion here with me, forcing her to continue a dangerous pregnancy because hospital-based care was not available to her in her home state.  Traveling to access essential healthcare can be intimidating and overwhelming.  It is not an easy thing to do, as we have all pretended that it is.  Like the experience of our patient who traveled from a small rural town and became lost in downtown Minneapolis with a dead cell phone after her flight landed.  We were able to get her a Lyft driver, our patient navigators, and she described that Lyft driver as a savior for her.  And like our patient who drove hundreds and hundreds of miles through blizzard conditions just to get her abortion.  Our new abortion landscape is difficult, it is dangerous, and it is putting my patients and healthcare providers at severe risk.  I’ve talked to my colleagues practicing in states where abortion is now illegal, and they are unnecessarily struggling with decisions around providing ethical, proper medical care and conflicting with the law.  This should never happen. Thankfully, providing abortion care has gotten less complicated in Minnesota.  Here, I’m trusted as a provider and an expert to work with my patients to provide the best care possible.  To know that I’m trusted to do my job is a comfort to me, but it should be the standard everywhere.  Private medical decisions should be made between patients and their doctors without interference from politicians or the protesters standing outside on the street in front of our clinic today. You know, I didn’t always feel this way.  I came to understand bodily autonomy after a long history of being anti-abortion and having a very distorted point of view about abortion care.  It wasn’t until a friend told me her abortion story that I came to see the light.  After hearing her, knowing her history, I knew that an abortion was the right choice for her, for her life, for her future and nobody else’s.  And it dawned on me.  If she is making the right decision for her life, then there are countless other people who are making the right decision for their lives.  And no one should be interfering in that. From my — from that point on, my awakening into understanding bodily autonomy and freedom grew to the point that I am today. Everyone should have the right to access healthcare.  Your ZIP Code shouldn’t dictate the care that you can access.  Your race, your socioeconomic status — none of that should determine it. So, in 2024 and beyond, we will keep fighting, we will keep working until we live in a world where everyone can access the care they decide is best for their futures and their bodies and in their own community. Thank you.  (Applause.) AIDE:  We’re going to take a couple of questions, and we’re — we’re going to start with Rochelle from the Star Tribune. Q    Hi, Madam Vice President.  Why do you think it took so long for a sitting president or vice president to visit an abortion provider?  And, also, how concerned are you about the 20 percent who voted uncommitted in the Minnesota presidential primary? THE VICE PRESIDENT:  Well, I’ll tell you, the reason I’m here is because this is a healthcare crisis.  And I think that of the many stories that we can tell — excuse me.  (Coughs.) Of the many stories that we need to tell about what has happened after the Dobbs decision, one of them is that part of this healthcare crisis is the clinics like this that have had to shut down and what that has meant to leave no options with any reasonable geographic area for so many women who need this essential care. And, again, it runs the gamut of reproductive healthcare.  So, yes, it is abortion care.  It is also, as I mentioned earlier, essential and critical reproductive healthcare like paps, like breast cancer screenings, things of that nature. So, I’m here to highlight that of the many, I believe, potentially intended consequences of the Dobbs decision, one of them has been for healthcare providers such as this in the states that have banned or outlawed access to reproductive care — clinics like this to shut down.  And it’s a travesty.  It’s a travesty. Q    Madam Vice President, can I — AIDE:  We’re going to go to our next question, Madam Vice President.  Darlene, right to your left, with the AP. Q    Hi.  Thank you.  We were not able to go with you on the tour, obviously.  Can you give us a sense of what you saw back there — THE VICE PRESIDENT:  Yeah. Q    — and also what you learned by coming here today? THE VICE PRESIDENT:  Well, what I saw were, I don’t know, maybe two dozen healthcare workers who really care — really care about their patients and who understand that in the healthcare delivery system, regardless of your gender or your healthcare need, I think we should all expect and certainly we all desire that you will be treated with dignity and you’ll be treated in an environment where you feel safe.  And by that, I mean safe to be free from judgment, to be in an environment where you are actually and really listened to, where your needs and your expression of your needs are taken seriously. And walking through this clinic, that’s what I saw are people who have dedicated their lives to the profession of providing healthcare in a safe place that gives people dignity. And I think we should all want that for each other. AIDE:  Thank you, Vice President.  We’ll going to Nick at the New York Times. Q    Madam Vice President, what do you see as your role on this issue, given that the administration has run up to the limit of what it can do to protect abortion rights and Congress is unlikely to pass a bill codifying them? THE VICE PRESIDENT:  Well, Congress will pass that bill when we win back the House.  (Applause.)  And so, I am sure of that. And I think that the — the point — one of the points that must be made on this issue, as we attempt to uplift the real stories and the real consequences of the Dobbs decision is to remind people elections matter.  Elections matter.  What happened here in Minnesota, with the reelection of the governor and the turning of the state legislature is what has led to ensuring that these fundamental rights are intact and are protected.  Elections matter. And let me be very clear about this.  When it comes to national elections and who sits in the United States Congress on this, there’s a fundamental point on this issue that I think most people agree with, which is that one does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree the government should not be telling women what to do with their body.  If she chooses, she will consult with — with her priest, her pastor, her rabbi, her imam.  But it’s not for the government to tell her what she can and cannot do with her own body. Q    And so, what do you see as your role on this issue? THE VICE PRESIDENT:  My role is to do what I just did, which is to articulate exactly these points and to continue to articulate them and to organize folks around what I know is an issue that is impacting more people than you’ll ever really know, who, as I said earlier, are silently suffering. And so, we who have the ability to have a bouquet of microphones in front of us, as I do, I take on then the responsibility of uplifting these stories and reminding people — with some belief, by the way, when I do it, that the vast majority of Americans do have empathy and that, even if they don’t agree that this would be the best decision for them, would agree that other people should not be suffering the way they are. AIDE:  Thank you, Vice President.  We have one more question right here from Patricia — THE VICE PRESIDENT:  Yes. AIDE:  — at Bloomberg. THE VICE PRESIDENT:  Yes.  Hi. Q    Madam Vice President, Roe was always an imperfect vessel.  What exactly would you like to see replace it?  What form should it take?  What should the scope of it be? THE VICE PRESIDENT:  What we want is to put back in place the protections that the Supreme Court took away, which is to codify, put into law the protections of Roe v. Wade.  That’s what we want. Rostov Holocaust Memorial at Zmiyovskaya Balka

Zmievskaya Balka is a site in Rostov-on-Don, Russia at which 27,000 Jews were massacred by the SS Einsatzgruppe D on August 11 and 12, 1942.

The Jewish men of Rostov were marched to Zmiyovskaya Balka, a ravine outside the city, and shot. The women, children and elderly were gassed in trucks, and their bodies buried in the same ravine. Among those murdered at Zmiyovskaya Balka was the pioneering psychologist Sabina Spielrein.

Zmiyovskaya Balka, which means "the ravine of the snakes", has become the site of annual memorial ceremonies.

Work is underway to collect the names of all victims killed at Zmievskaya Balka. So far, over 3,000 names were complied, if you know of people who were murdered there, please contact us so they can be added to the list. ​[email protected] .

Latest Pat Metheny album, tour a one-man band and coming to Lexington

One might suspect that in listening to his newest album, “Dream Box,” Pat Metheny subscribes to the familiar axiom of doing something yourself when you want it done correctly.

That especially holds true for the immediate impressions the record creates. It summons a profound but subtle glow unique to the electric guitar when its pace and volume are slowed and the only accompanists are multi-tracked melodies of an additional guitar line. In short, it’s a quiet venture where Metheny is the only participant.

But such a distinctive solo setting, which brings Metheny back to Lexington for his first concert here in over three decades, is but a chapter in a 50-year recording career that has thrived in collaborative settings, whether it was through his famed ensemble fusion work with the Pat Metheny Group, a cinematic collaboration with David Bowie (1985’s “This is Not America”) and supporting, as well as bandleading, roles involving artists from almost every stylistic corner of the jazz world.

Such lasting and far-reaching visibility has had its rewards — namely 20 Grammy Awards in 10 categories spanning 44 years. If you think that is dizzying, look at Metheny’s touring schedule. No sooner did an extensive international trio tour to promote his 2021 album “Side-Eye” wind down than an equally long-running trek of solo concerts to back up “Dream Box” began. On top of that, Metheny used a brief break from the road to cut an even newer album — a very different solo guitar record to be titled “MoonDial” — due out this summer.

All this from a guy who is going to turn 70 in August.

“The challenge is always that I have way more ideas and projects and things I want to do then I have time,” Metheny said. “It takes me a long time to fully develop ideas, to write the music for a particular project and then to come up with exactly the right people for a band and all of the other million things that you have to do in order to make something be a viable way of spending a year or two of your life as a bandleader.”

The key word here is “bandleader” — whether it was through the modern slant of his work in the Pat Metheny Group or the more traditionally leaning music of trios and quartets from more recent decades that have born his name, Metheny has been the man in charge. But a project like “Dream Box” isn’t that different. Metheny is still the leader. It’s just that his band is smaller.

“Really, most everything I have done in my life as a musician has mostly been under the banner of ‘bandleader,’ but a bandleader who also the person who is going to write the music. My main job has been finding musicians that were qualified and capable to achieve the kind a result for whatever music I happen to be writing or conceiving at a particular time and then doing records and touring that reflects that period.

“And in a lot of ways, this tour is similar. It’s just that in this case, I am the bandleader of a band where I am the only one in it.”

‘Dream Box’ album unique for Metheny

“Dream Box” differs considerably in both design and intent from such previous Metheny solo records as 2003’s “One Quiet Night” and 2011’s “What’s It All About.” The former was recorded quickly on a single baritone acoustic guitar while the latter employs a more expansive acoustic vocabulary on a collection of exclusively non-original compositions. Both albums won Grammys.

“Dream Box” was, in contrast, a happy accident. It was constructed from forgotten files of solo electric guitar works played with quiet delicacy that regularly overlaid multiple melodies for a beautifully subtle sense of harmony. The record earned Metheny his 49th Grammy nomination.

“Dream Box is unlike anything else I have ever done, especially because I had no idea I was even doing anything when I did it. In truth, I don’t remember exactly when I recorded this music. That alone makes it unique in the wide range of things that I’ve done across the years. I discovered a folder on my computer where I kept odds and ends things and just found myself listening to those nine tracks over and over again. It occurred to me that maybe other people might like to hear them, too. As it turns out, I guess they did, which is really cool.

“It is a very different kind of a presentation in terms of the instrumentation and sound of the record. The whole thing of doing two parts like that is something that I first did on ‘Bright Size Life’ (Metheny’s 1976 debut album) many years ago on the track ‘Unity Village.’ At that time, it was kind of exotic to do something like that where you would overdub on top of yourself. Now, you can go on any street corner anywhere in the world and there are musicians with looper pedals doing essentially the same thing.”

On the road at nearly 70

Luckily for Metheny, the ongoing and still-plentiful joys of live concerts outweigh the rigors — traveling, especially — that come with the touring life of a working musician. Though the repertoire, the performance and, to a degree, the audiences continually change, the core elements of the music, along with Metheny’s relationship to them, do not waver.

“One thing that is great about being a musician is that music, in its purest form, is impervious to all of the random ups and downs of the culture. By that I mean that the B-flat that I’m playing today is the same B-flat that existed a million years ago and will exist a million years from now.

“I feel so lucky to be dealing in a currency that is fundamentally true like that.

“The audiences are very different from night to night. Even if you play in the same city three nights in a row, it’s going be a totally different feeling each of those three nights. My relationship to the audience is something separate from my relationship to music itself in the sense that I hope everybody likes it. I will do my best to play well and to make sure we do a sound check, to take a shower before the concert and be as ready as I can be to present myself on the bandstand. But once the music starts it’s kind of between me and it. And I really only answer to that.

“I don’t mean to say that in a snotty kind of way, but my sense across doing this for many years is that as long as I can respond to the music in a really honest and deep way, usually that is the quality that has gotten me to the point where I can play a lot of concerts for people and people will continue to come and check them out. It seems like that mandate is the core element in it all that has been the foundation of my whole thing along the way.”

Despite Greene’s aggressive stance, the Republican majority is currently against removing Johnson.

"She's on the McCarthy revenge tour," said House Freedom Caucus Chair  Bob Good  (R-Va.), one of the eight GOP lawmakers who voted to remove McCarthy.

"We don't talk about removing the speaker. We're trying to influence him to do the right thing."

Why It Matters : The internal strife within the GOP has been escalating, with Greene at the forefront of the latest controversy. Her attempt to oust House Speaker Johnson has been met with significant opposition from fellow Republicans. The GOP has warned that such actions could exacerbate divisions within an already fractured party.

Greene’s recent rejection of blame, should Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) ascend to the role of Speaker, adds another layer of complexity to the situation. Her stance indicates a refusal to accept responsibility for potential shifts in House leadership dynamics.

However, Greene has previously opposed the removal of Johnson in January.

Rostov-on-Don, Russia is a colorful southern merchant city on a port of five seas whose mild climate, rich history and welcoming attitude continue to attract travelers. The city’s impressive collection of monuments associated with the North Caucasus and Don Cossacks, amassed over the past two and a half centuries, continue to testify to the city’s unique role in Russian history.

Rostov-on-Don has many unofficial names, the most common of which is “Rostov-Papa”. Other nicknames include "Gateway of the Caucasus", "Liverpool of Azov", "Rost Angeles" and "City of Merchants". This latter title is particularly significant for Rostov, which is filled with luxurious 19th-century merchant mansions that are practically unrivaled in all of Russia .

Rostov-on-Don served over the centuries as a customs office, a fortress and a port. It was officially founded on December 15, 1749 when a customs office was opened on the Don River by decree of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna. Again by order of the empress, in 1761 the office was replaced with a fortress to protect the country’s southern borders. The fort was named in honor of St. Dmitry, Metropolitan of Rostov and Yaroslavl, and in later years its name was shortened to simply “Rostov”. In order not to confuse the city with the already existing Rostov the Great, it was renamed Rostov-on-Don in 1806.

Its favorable location at the intersection of land and river routes allowed for active port trade with many foreign merchants, a factor which led to its rapid growth and development. In the early 20th century, Rostov-on-Don became a major center of international trade in southern Russia and the third most important city in the country in terms of foreign trade turnover. By this time, nearly a hundred enterprises were functioning in Rostov, including factories belonging to Vladikavkaz Railway, a shipbuilding and iron foundry and two tobacco factories.

Today Rostov-on-Don has a population of over one million and is one of southern Russia’s largest metropolises, a comfortable city whose colorful layout makes it attractive to tourists .

Rostov-on-Don Attractions

Rostov-on-Don is replete with outstanding architectural, historical and cultural sights scattered throughout every district of the city. Yet Kirovsky District, the historic city center with the highest concentration of landmarks, remains a favorite among tourists during excursions to Rostov-on-Don.

It was in Kirovsky District that the city was birthed, and even today the neighborhood is reminiscent of the original Fortress of Saint Dmitry of Rostov. Also in Kirovsky District is Monument to Peter the Great and Don State Public Library, as well as many theaters, museums and restaurants. The nearby Rostov Embankment remains a favorite scenic hangout for residents and guests alike.

The prosperous merchants who once competed with one another in the construction of elegant estates left an indelible mark on the cityscape, and a walk along Bolshaya Sadovaya Avenue and Pushkinskaya Street, likened to an open-air merchants’ museum, will take you back to simpler times. Outstanding examples of Tsarist-era architecture on this route include Margarita Chernova’s House, Martyn Brothers House and City Hall, all of which are now protected under the Russian Cultural Heritage Register.

In Leninsky District is Gorky Park, the oldest park in the city, and Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The railway district stretches along the Don, on the bank of which is Botanical Garden of the Southern Federal University, the largest of its kind in Russia. The picturesque Kumzhenskaya Grove, a favorite place for Rostovites to relax, is also situated nearby.

In Oktyabrsky District is one of the largest zoos in Russia and Europe, which is home to around five thousand animals. Pervomaisky District attracts with Rostov Sea (Rostovskoye More), an artificial reservoir which provides respite during the warm summer weather in Rostov-on-Don. To the west is Sovetsky District (known locally as Western District), an area famous for its year-round Ice Arena and Church of St. George the Victorious.

Theatergoers will appreciate the playful buildings and varied repertoires of the city’s numerous playhouses. Both Chaliapin and Rachmaninov performed at the opera house, which opened its doors in 1892. The unusual design of Rostov State Musical Theater resembles a white grand piano with an open lid. Gorky Rostov Academic Drama Theater, whose constructivist-style building is reminiscent of the lines of a caterpillar tractor, is rightfully counted among the finest theaters in Russia.

Rostov State Circus, which is more than half a century old, deserves special attention. Unforgettable performances of the legendary magician Igor Kio, famous animal trainer Anatoly Durov and the clowns Nikulin and Karandash have all been staged here over the years. Animal lovers will appreciate Rostov Dolphinarium, where visitors can admire sea animals while becoming familiar with their aquatic environ.

Museum options also abound in Rostov-on-Don. For history buffs, we recommend the Regional Museum of Local Lore, whose halls are filled with exhibits ranging from the Stone Age to modern times. Tour the Rostov Regional Museum of Fine Arts, located in an old, gated mansion, or fulfill your childhood dream in the Museum of Cosmonautics by sitting in a real capsule from the Soyuz spacecraft. To discover unique exhibitions on the origins and development of the brewing business, look no further than the appropriately named Museum of the History of Brewing.

On the outskirts of the city is Liventsovsky Fortress (also called Donskaya Troy), built by North Caucasian tribes almost 19 thousand years ago. One of the most popular sites near Rostov-on-Don is Paramonovsky Warehouses, located on the banks of the Don. The buildings themselves may be in ruins, but the strangely beautiful pools and waterfalls make for great photos. Fans of author Mikhail Sholokhov can visit his hometown, the village of Veshenskaya, which is located four hours from the city by car.

A visit to Central Market, commonly called Old Bazaar, is a must during your tour to Rostov-on-Don. Vendors will invite you to taste their array of pickles, while on the pleasantly surprising fish row you can purchase salted, fried or stewed varieties of the city’s famous Don fish.

While in this port city, be sure to sample two local dishes: authentic Cossack fish soup, which when cooked over the fire retains a delightfully smoky taste, and crayfish cooked with sour cream and red wine, whose flavors are fit for royalty!

Rostov-on-Don Souvenirs

The most popular souvenirs from Rostov-on-Don are items with Don and Cossack themes, which can be easily found in local markets. The city also offers a range of beautiful ceramics and tableware, a great selection of bedding sets made at the city’s famous sewing factories, various drinks from Rostov distilleries and the ever-popular vodka gift sets.

Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Amor Towles, “A Gentleman in Moscow” follows Rostov through the doors of the Metropol and stays there through decades of Russian history, from the formation of the Soviet Union to Stalinist repression to World War II and beyond. Writer and showrunner Ben Vanstone (“All Creatures Great and Small”) renders Rostov’s journey in eight hourlong episodes, a length at once condensed from Towles’s 500-page tome and distended from where the story feels most comfortable onscreen. “A Gentleman in Moscow” may present Rostov and his kind as an endangered species, but the series is part of an all-too-common trend: a limited series built around a star performance that’s engaging, but not enough to stretch a movie-sized idea into a TV-sized narrative.

But none of these characters ever compete with Rostov for the center of the series’ attention. They are, at best, accessories to his maturation from unserious dilettante to an impassioned protector of his adopted family, or an audience to his anecdotes about a bygone era. McGregor gamely sports a mustache and animates Rostov with a boyish naiveté. (After “Fargo,” “Halston” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” the actor seems to have taken to TV as a showcase for his talents.) His Rostov is compelling, yet also familiar — Towles’ novel was published in 2016, just a couple years after Ralph Fiennes portrayed a similar figure in Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” which brought its namesake property to life with much more stylistic brio than directors Sam Miller and Sarah O’Gorman bring to the Metropol. There’s a ceiling to how much McGregor can do with a protagonist who clings to such established contours of vintage propriety caught up in the tides of history.

There’s also the matter of context. “The Grand Budapest Hotel” took place in a fictional country, but it referenced the rising tide of European fascism in the 1930s, a theme with obvious resonance for contemporary viewers. “A Gentleman in Moscow” deals with Communist repression, which is both a throwback to Cold War anxieties and an inherently political subject for a stubbornly apolitical show. Rostov’s college friend Mishka (Fehinti Balogun) hails from a more proletarian background and ends up on the opposite side of the revolution, but their differences stem more from personal strife than ideology. In their school days, Rostov thwarted Mishka’s romance with his sister, an intervention with tragic results.

“A Gentleman in Moscow” otherwise avoids having Rostov question whether his former lifestyle ever came at others’ expense or cultivating his views on current events beyond melancholy regret. This absence might be less conspicuous were the show more overtly abstract and allegorical á la “The Regime,” another series set largely within the walls of a requisitioned hotel. But the Metropol, while clearly constructed on a soundstage, is realistic enough to invite questions about the outside world. Towles could relay those developments in writing; on TV, we can’t see how Russia is changing because we’re trapped inside with Rostov, a deliberate choice that nonetheless leads to visual monotony and cuts off a potential source of plot.

The first episode of “A Gentleman in Moscow” is now available to stream on Paramount+ and will air on Showtime on March 31 at 9 p.m. ET, with remaining episodes streaming weekly on Fridays and airing on Sundays.
