Gary Bergin walked off the Viking Mississippi and climbed the staircase leading to the Vicksburg Riverfront Grove Street entrance to be greeted by a banner saying, “Welcome to Vicksburg,” a greeting repeated by Ward 2 Alderman Alex Monsour.

Bergin, from Toronto Canada, boarded the Viking Mississippi at St.Paul Minn., to ride the cruise boat down to New Orleans.

“This has been a good trip,” he said. “I’m here to enjoy American history.”

Bergin was among the 230 passengers on the Viking Mississippi, which after months of speculation and anticipation made its inaugural visit to Vicksburg on Wednesday.

The cruise boat arrived in Vicksburg early Wednesday morning, but unspecified problems with dropping the boat’s stage, or prow, delayed the boat’s first docking at the riverfront until about noon. Vicksburg Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Laura Beth Strickland said the Viking Mississippi would spend the day in Vicksburg before leaving and going south. It will return next week, she said.

“It’s a great day; a great day for it,” Mayor George Flaggs Jr. said as he watched the boat maneuver along the riverfront. “It’s unfortunate that we didn’t prepare (for the arrival) like we should have, but I think we’ve got it worked out. I think we’re in good shape.”

“This is great. We’re so excited there are 230 passengers today and we can’t wait to get them out and show them all the sights of Vicksburg,” Strickland said. “We’ve got a lot of great tours set up for them today where they can do a little shopping and experience Vicksburg.”

Flaggs called the boat’s arrival exciting.

“We’ve been anticipating it; we were waiting on it. I think it’s a great day for them and a great day for the city of Vicksburg,” Flaggs said. “What we have to do now is continue to work together, collaborate and accommodate all this. This is a growing pain. This is economic development.”

Established in 1997 by a Scandinavian and Dutch consortium, Viking Cruises is a global corporation headquartered in the United States with its main operational headquarters in Basel, Switzerland.

The company currently offers cruises along rivers in Europe, Russia, China, Southeast Asia and Egypt, and in 2013 began ocean cruises. Its river cruise division is the world’s largest river cruise line, according to the company.

Viking in April 2020 announced it would begin Mississippi river cruises in August 2022 and in November 2020 leased a 600-foot section of Vicksburg’s riverfront along the Yazoo Diversion Canal to build a facility for its cruise boats.

The Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a 20-year ground lease with Viking USA LLC at a rate of $1 per passenger to use the site, which is located behind the Yazoo & Mississippi Valley Railroad Depot on Levee Street and goes north. Viking will build the dock.

Viking in May subleased riverfront docking space from American Cruise Lines because its own docking area was not ready for its boat. Viking later moved the Viking Mississippi to Minnesota and on Sept. 4 had its first Mississippi cruise from St. Paul, Minn., to St. Louis, Mo.

American Cruise Lines operates small ships accommodating between 90 and 180 passengers that are built, flagged and crewed in the U.S. – and it's the only company in the world operating a 100% U.S.-flagged fleet of riverboats and cruise ships. ACL's itineraries traverse waterways across 35 states, with 11 itineraries dedicated to the Mississippi River. Cruisers can choose to sail on modern riverboats with a sleek interior design or while away their time aboard classic paddle-wheelers reminiscent of days gone by.

ACL offers variety as well as versatility: This line boasts both the longest and shortest sailings on this list with cruises ranging from eight to 60 days in length, including The Great United States. This inaugural 60-day voyage spans four major rivers and 20 states, making it the longest U.S. river cruise in history.

Complimentary hotel and transportation packages are available from every departure city before your cruise. You can book certain premium packages for added perks, such as two nights spent next door to Graceland in Memphis – with VIP tickets and a city tour included in the price.

Viking River Cruises

Viking cruise ship under a bridge on the Mississippi River.

Courtesy of Viking

Viking is no stranger to sailing Europe's rivers; the brand is synonymous with river cruising worldwide aboard its dozens of ships. However, Viking River Cruises is a newcomer to U.S. rivers, with its purpose-built ship: the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Looking to carve out its own niche in the American river cruising category, Viking claims it has the region's "first truly modern cruise ship" with its distinct Scandinavian design and expansive top sun deck with an infinity plunge pool.

Viking's mostly all-inclusive fares include a complimentary excursion in each port, destination lectures and performances, beer and wine at meals, free Wi-Fi, specialty coffees and teas, and more. The line offers five itineraries ranging in length from eight to 22 days along the Mighty Mississippi. Pre- and post-cruise extensions can be added to all voyages for an additional expense.

New Orleans & Southern Charms: Round-trip from New Orleans

Length: Eight days Price: Starts at $3,999 per person

If you don't know which Viking Mississippi itinerary to choose, start here. A round-trip voyage from New Orleans is convenient for booking flights and offers an excellent opportunity to extend your stay in NOLA. Six guided tours are included across eight days, from the historic estates of Natchez to Vicksburg National Military Park. A stop in St. Francisville gives you the chance to marvel at some of the 140-plus buildings it has on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you extend your stay in New Orleans, plan to sample the local Creole cuisine and take in some of the city's nightly jazz entertainment. In the morning, grab a beignet and a steaming cup of chicory coffee au lait at the original Café du Monde in the French Market.

2024 dates: This itinerary is available on select dates in February, November and December.

Heart of the Delta: New Orleans to Memphis

Length: Nine days Price: Starts at $4,299 per person

Similar to its round-trip New Orleans Southern Charms itinerary, the Heart of the Delta cruise begins in New Orleans and calls on the same five ports, before sailing through the Lower Mississippi and disembarking in Memphis. Enjoy scenic views of the serpentine river route – perhaps with expert commentary or a local cooking demonstration – and then take time to explore the birthplace of the Memphis blues, which is also a center of civil rights history.

2024 dates: In 2024, this cruise is available in February, March, April, May, June and November.

America's Great River: St. Paul to New Orleans

Length: 15 days Price: Starts at $12,999 per person

This Viking voyage sails from St. Paul to New Orleans on a two-week trip that calls on 13 ports with one day of scenic sailing. This itinerary combines the best of Viking's other Mississippi sailings for an all-encompassing Midwestern and Southern experience with 12 guided tours.

Included in the fare is a tour of Graceland; a stroll through small-town Burlington, Iowa, to see Snake Alley, deemed the most crooked street in the world; and a visit to the National Eagle Center of Red Wing, among others. For an additional fee, hop on an airboat ride through the Atchafalaya Swamp in Baton Rouge or tour the Anheuser-Busch Brewery of St. Louis.

2024 dates: Viking has availability for this itinerary in July, September and October.

You may have seen riverboat gambling ships or are at least familiar with riverboat gambling along U.S. waterways. However, while high rolling on the river sounds like an exciting way to spend a night (or two, or more) while on your riverboat cruise, you'll have to jump ship to play the slots, roll the dice, spin the wheel or play a hand of Texas Hold 'em. Gambling on cruise ships sailing on internal waters is prohibited by U.S. law.

Gambling on boats in the U.S. is a complicated matter. While you will find some ships sailing along American waterways that are only set up for gambling, they are not carrying passengers from port to port. Most vessels that feature riverboat gambling are now moored, offering sports betting, table games, entertainment, live music and dancing while tethered to shore.

What to Know About Mississippi River Cruises — From the Cruise Lines to Top Itineraries

See small towns and bustling cities by boat on a Mississippi River cruise.

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.

mississippi river boat cruise vicksburg

River cruises are a great way to see the world — you can visit several waterfront destinations and watch the scenery pass by from cozy accommodations and top-deck lounges on intimate luxury ships. And while rivers like the Danube and the Rhine are top choices for many travelers, you don't have to go abroad for a memorable river cruise. You can access some of the nation's iconic attractions and favorite cities right from the Mississippi River.

There are three main cruise lines traveling the Mississippi, with journeys ranging from less than a week to more than 20 days. Spring and fall are the best times of year to take a cruise along the river, as you'll avoid the summer heat and winter chill and enjoy more pleasant weather while you take in the surroundings.

Here's what you need to know about Mississippi River boat cruises, from choice itineraries to popular stops.

Mississippi River Cruise Lines

There are three main cruise lines that offer itineraries along the Mississippi River: Viking River Cruises , American Queen Voyages , and American Cruise Lines . Viking is known for its luxury river, ocean, and expedition cruises to incredible destinations around the world, and trips aboard its 193-stateroom Viking Mississippi adhere to the same standard of service.

American Queen Voyages offers several itineraries along the Mississippi — one along the Upper Mississippi, another on the Lower Mississippi, and one that also sails a portion of the Ohio River — on its signature paddle-wheel steamboats. The company's flagship, the American Queen, is said to be the world's biggest steamboat.

The itineraries on American Cruise Lines feature either modern riverboats or old-school paddle wheelers, so you can choose your ideal sailing experience.

All three cruise lines offer similar itineraries along the river, so we recommend looking into the ships, the amenities, and what's included in the rate (like pre-departure hotel stays and excursions) to help make your decision.

Popular Ports on the Mississippi

You can cruise all the way from New Orleans to Minneapolis, or you can sail shorter segments of the river. Typically, cruises along the Lower Mississippi sail between New Orleans and Memphis, while cruises on the Upper Mississippi sail between St. Louis and the Twin Cities.

Passengers on the Upper Mississippi may get the chance to hop off and explore Mark Twain's childhood home in Hannibal, Missouri, stroll the streets of Iowa's oldest city (Dubuque), or marvel at sacred bluffs in Red Wing, Minnesota. Along the Middle Mississippi, there's Paducah, Kentucky, a UNESCO-designated Creative City , and Chester, Illinois, the birthplace of Popeye the Sailor Man.

On the Lower Mississippi, you'll find Cajun culture in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Civil War history in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and music and BBQ in Memphis .

Mississippi River Cruise Itineraries

There are many itineraries to choose from between the three major Mississippi River Cruise lines, but here are our top picks.

Viking River Cruises: America's Great River

Cruise from New Orleans all the way up to St. Paul on Viking's 15- or 17-day America's Great River itinerary aboard the 193-stateroom Viking Mississippi , a vessel designed just for this river. The journey starts in New Orleans and stops in Baton Rouge; Natchez and Vicksburg, Mississippi; Memphis; and St. Louis, where passengers can explore attractions like Gateway Arch National Park and the flagship Anheuser-Busch brewery. From there, it continues on to Hannibal, Missouri; Burlington, Davenport, and Dubuque, Iowa; La Crosse, Wisconsin; and Red Wing, Minnesota, where travelers can learn about America's most recognizable symbol at the National Eagle Center. In between action-packed stops, there's plenty of time to take in the scenery from your veranda or the boat's several public viewing areas.

American Queen Voyages: New Orleans to Memphis

Sail along the Lower Mississippi from New Orleans to Memphis on this nine-day cruise, which starts with a complimentary stay in New Orleans and a second day to enjoy the Big Easy. Then, it's on to Nottoway Resort and St. Francisville in Louisiana and Natchez, Vicksburg, and Greenville in Mississippi before a day of cruising through the Delta and disembarking in Memphis. There are a few different paddle-wheel riverboats that cruise this route for American Queen Voyages — find the specific ship for your journey when you select a date.

American Cruise Lines: Upper Mississippi River Cruise

This eight-day cruise starts in St. Louis and sails along the Upper Mississippi to St. Paul. Stops along the way include Hannibal, Missouri; Fort Madison, Davenport, and Dubuque, Iowa; and Winona and Red Wing, Minnesota. Several riverboats cruise this route, including American Melody and American Symphony , inaugurated in 2021 and 2022, respectively. These sister vessels offer large rooms and suites with contemporary furnishings and an upscale feel.

Port Rosedale MS cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Rosedale MS, Mississippi. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Rosedale MS is a Mississippi river cruise port and town in Mississippi USA (Bolivar County) with population around 2,000. The town is on the river's eastern bank and approx 19 mi (31 km) northwest of Cleveland MS.

As cruise port, Rosedale MS is included in the schedule of Viking River Cruises USA and was introduced (also as a homeport) with the company's first American ship - Viking Mississippi (2022-built).

Next table shows the riverboat's new 7-night/8-day "Heart of the Delta Cruise" (New Orleans to Rosedale) itinerary introduced in 2023 January.

Viking USA also offers the reverse (Rosedale to New Orleans) itinerary. Both voyages are actually 8-night/9-day cruisetours including 7 nights of sailing on the Mississippi and an overnight hotel stay in the debarkation port (Rosedale or NOLA).

The settlement was founded in the mid-19th-century (established in 1838, town-incorporated in 1872, city-incorporated in 1930) and its economy was largely based on cotton production and export (large plantations served by slaves). The industry initially developed through river shipping but was later boosted with the opening of the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad (used between 1882 and 1946) running from Jackson MS (state's largest city) via Yazoo City MS, the Mississippi Delta and ending in Memphis Tennessee . In 1892, the railroad was expanded by adding the Memphis-New Orleans portion (Louisville, New Orleans and Texas Railway).

Highlights of Vicksburg’s Boats and River Culture

  • February 26, 2023

With the west side of the city nestled along the Mississippi River, Vicksburg’s identity has become entwined with this powerful body of water. Vicksburg’s river culture celebrates the role that the waterway has played in the city’s development in several different ways. Through art, history and entertainment, the spirit of the river and the boats that travel it is never forgotten among its citizens. If you are visiting the city and want to soak up some of this culture, Visit Vicksburg suggests a few essential attractions related to the river and boating.

Vicksburg Riverfront Murals

Given the risk of flooding during heavy rains, a floodwall runs along the bank of the Mississippi River to protect Vicksburg from overflows. In 2001, the city decided to take advantage of this large canvas and commissioned an artist to paint murals on the wall. The Vicksburg Riverfront Murals originated with an abstract work by artist Martha Ferris. In the following years, Robert Dafford contributed 32 additional panels of lifelike scenes that tell the story of Vicksburg. Several paintings depict the river’s history, including the Steamer Strague, the world’s largest steamboat, and the explosion of the Sultana. Altogether, nearly three dozen murals provide the perfect backdrop for a relaxing stroll along the river.

Jesse Brent Lower Mississippi River Museum

This interactive museum features several exhibits on a broad range of topics related to the Mississippi River. Begin your tour with a movie in the Orientation Theater that reveals what life was like for residents in years past. To introduce the ecosystem of the river, a 1,515-gallon aquarium is home to several native fish species, including the catfish, while an interactive flood model explores the factors that affect the river’s flow. Guests can also explore the 1927 Flood Wall and Tent display, which offers a realistic re-creation of the worst flood in U.S. history and the conditions families coped with after the loss of their homes. Great for all ages, the Jesse Brent Lower Mississippi River Museum is open daily and offers free admission.

Catfish Row Children’s Art Park

The Catfish Row Art Park makes it easy to introduce kids to Vicksburg’s river culture. Stop by the park after viewing the Riverfront Murals to explore children’s art and exhibits that showcase the history of life on the Mississippi. Large garden areas provide the ideal spot for a picnic with the little ones, while the splash fountain allows kids to cool down after a day in the sunshine.

The American Queen docks in Vicksburg, Mississippi, May 26, 2023.

The latest on the politics and policy shaping Minnesota.

Memphis has bet big on Mississippi River cruises, but the industry took a hit this week when American Queen Voyages — one of three companies cruising the Mississippi — shut down.

The company said it couldn’t rebound after the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The overnight cruise industry was especially affected by changes in travel preferences and, as a result, (American Queen Voyages) has become financially unsustainable,” the company said in a statement.

Lee Hendrix is no stranger to the instability of the industry. He’s worked as a “riverlorian,” or river historian, on board the American Queen through several ownership changes and bankruptcies. His first stint on board was from the late 1990s to 2008. When the company shuttered in 2008, he left for a job with the Army Corps of Engineers as a way to stay on the river with more job security.

“It’s a tough business because you’re so dependent on the vagaries of the economy,” he said.

Hendrix returned to the American Queen a couple years ago, after retiring from the Corps. Now, he’s witnessing another bankruptcy that’s left the American Queen sitting empty at a dock.

Even as the dust settles, he’s optimistic there’s still a future for the boat he worked on, which was the company’s namesake.

“We expected that there was going to be some kind of disruption, but we somehow expected the American Queen would survive,” Hendrix said of the boat itself. “That’s sacred ground for me.”

American Queen Voyages — under various names and ownership — has a tumultuous history. There was a bankruptcy in 2001, followed by a stint of sales and closures until 2008, when the fleet went out of commission. In 2011, it returned, even headquartered in Memphis for several years, and ran continually for more than a decade until its parent company, Hornblower Group, filed for bankruptcy this week.

Kevin Kane, president and CEO of Memphis Tourism, said American Queen’s closure was an unexpected hit to local river tourism — the city is expected to lose 10,000 hotel room nights annually because of it — but he’s confident the market is still there.

Ebbs and flows

For two decades, Memphis’ investment in overnight river cruises has been up and down.

Plans to construct Beale Street Landing, the city’s biggest dock, started in the early 2000s and dragged on through three mayoral administrations. In that time, Hurricane Katrina hit, the river’s overnight cruise industry collapsed and the company that built the American Queen went bankrupt in 2001 — not for the last time.

American Queen returned, despite multiple ownership changes and business closures, but shuttered again in 2008 — as did its only competitor — leaving Memphis with a dock under construction but no cruises running on the Mississippi River.

When American Queen returned to the river, again, the company’s decision to headquarter in Memphis in 2011 was a vote of confidence for river tourism. Within the decade, however, American Queen moved its headquarters out of the city.

Then, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic halted all travel.

By the time cruises started up again post-pandemic, cities along the Mississippi River, including Memphis, were betting that the industry would make a comeback. Their confidence was boosted when Viking Cruises launched a Mississippi River itinerary in 2022, bringing a third company to the river.

Memphis Tourism previously estimated cruises have an annual economic impact of $100 million on Memphis and are responsible for 20,000 hotel room nights yearly in the city. American Queen alone was responsible for half of that hotel traffic.

Related: Burgeoning Mississippi riverboat industry grapples with increasing threats of flooding, drought

Overnight cruises on the Mississippi River aren’t cheap. The lowest tickets for a week-long cruise are a few thousand dollars, and Kane said cruising’s affluent customer base brings a lot of money to Memphis .

At one point, Memphis was planning a $35 million expansion of its docks — an indication of the city’s confidence that river cruises were here to stay — but the idea to build an additional dock at Greenbelt Park was scrapped late last year. All that funding will go to Beale Street Landing instead.

However, even with American Queen’s exit, Kane said the city still needs a second dock to accommodate the two remaining cruise companies: Viking and American Cruise Lines.

“We still need expanded docks,” Kane said. “River cruising is still very important to the Memphis hospitality industry.”

Sinking ship

American Queen Voyages retired the smallest of its three Mississippi River boats in late 2022. Then, last year, it scrapped its trips on the Great Lakes and sold the boats that ran those tours. At the time, the company characterized the decision as a move to refocus on its river cruises.

In late 2022, as American Queen was rolling back its services, Viking was launching its Mississippi River tours, and American Cruise Lines was adding more boats, despite the hits all three companies took when the river dropped to record lows during recent summers . Droughts forced them to change itineraries, offer refunds and, in some cases, cancel tours completely , as river conditions made it challenging — and in some cases, impossible — to travel along the river.

There were other signs of trouble in the months leading up to American Queen’s closure. The company’s president, Cindy D’Aoust, left the company last fall after about a year in the role, according to news reports. A few months later, the company canceled its season-opening tours in February, and several travel agency groups stopped booking trips on the American Queen.

Those troubles came to a boiling point in late February when its parent company, Hornblower, filed for bankruptcy and laid off 500 employees. American Queen has canceled all future cruises and is offering refunds to customers. The company is up for sale, but if there are no buyers, it’ll shut down.

“Whatever happened to them, I can’t explain it,” Kane said. “I don’t think river cruising is on the decline. I’m not the least bit concerned.”

Viking River Cruises

Price: Starts at $3,999 per person

Length: Nine days

Price: Starts at $4,299 per person

Price: Starts at $12,999 per person
