With spring patiently waiting to arrive, February is the perfect month for a vacation! Whether you’re planning a special Valentine’s Day getaway or looking to find some warm weather, February offers a plethora of options. Here are the best countries to visit in February!

Whether your idea of the best place to travel to in February is to say goodbye to the cold and hit the beach beach, or you’re aiming for snowy adventures like skiing and northern lights, this list has a little bit of everything. 

Some of these destinations are in the off season, so you’ll find amazing pricing, which makes it even more fun to travel there! From cities with cobblestone streets to white sandy beaches, you’ll find the best February destinations.

Who knew February was such a great time to travel?! This list proves that it just may be the best. With fewer crowds and diverse options it’s up to you to decide the best place to vacation in February for your travel style.

1. Seychelles

• Region:  Africa (island in the Indian Ocean)
• Fly into:  Seychelles International Airport (SEZ)
• Average temperature:  85F/76F. Approximately 11 days of rain.

One of the best countries to visit in February is the Seychelles. If you are coming from the Northern Hemisphere, you will likely have the winter blues at this point and the Seychelles offers a completely different world during the winter months!

Technically, the Seychelles experience their ‘rainy’ season throughout this time, however, it’s the tropics so you can expect a bit of rain throughout the year, anyway.

One perk of visiting the Seychelles in winter is that the seas are calmer despite the weather being wetter. This is especially important for those taking the ferry to La Digue or Praslin from Mahe (the summer ferries are known to make passengers seasick).

In February, you can find the Seychellois celebrating Carnival. They have BBQs (a Creole favorite!), picnics, and a lot of dancing on the islands. There is also the eco-friendly marathon taking place in February.

The off-season winter months also experience slightly cheaper prices – which is great for those traveling as the Seychelles is not a budget destination . Tours are also easier to book at the last minute.

One tour to avoid missing out on is the Saint-Anne Marine Park and Moyenne Island day trip. This is one of the  best things to do on Mahe  and is a must for any visitor.

If you plan to visit all three main islands (Mahe, La Digue, and Praslin), you should set aside at least 10 days to properly see all the islands. Otherwise, your trip can feel a bit rushed.

Finland is one of the best vacation spots in February, especially in the Lapland region located in Northern Finland. This whole area is a complete winter wonderland, and you will be guaranteed tons of snow!

Firstly, you will want to base yourself in Rovaniemi, which is the capital of the Lapland region of Finland. It is located right on the Arctic Circle and you can here by train or plane. There are tons of nearby towns, all offering winter wonderland activities.

From winter hiking, frozen waterfalls, reindeer farms, huskies, Finnish Saunas, and ice fishing, there is something for everyone.

Additionally, one of the oldest known Nomadic festivals takes place during February. This is called the Jokkmokk market. It celebrates the traditions of the Sàmi people. During the festival, you’ll be taken back to the Middle Ages, where you can try traditional meals and explore the market stalls.

February is also an incredible time to see the Northern Lights in Lapland! There are plenty of guided tours you can book. By booking a tour, you’ll maximize your chances of seeing the lights as you will be guided by experts. 

Admittedly, the temperatures are definitely low during this time of the year. Just make sure to have extra layers and a big thick coat.

One of the absolute best countries to visit in February, Turks and Caicos is nestled in the vibrant Caribbean Sea. With vibrant turquoise water and white-sand beaches, this getaway is a much-needed reprieve from a cold winter.

With a scene that can’t be described in words or photos, the color of the water in Turks and Caicos is truly unbelievable. In fact, it reminds me of the time I visited Banff in summer and saw the water in Moraine Lake – truly jaw-dropping!

Turks and Caicos is a chain of islands, although most people fly into and stay on Providenciales, unless you’re taking a cruise you’ll likely go through Grand Turk.

There’s so many great things to do in Turks and Caicos, including eating delicious food, enjoying water activities and beach hopping! Grace Bay is the best beach in Turks and Caicos, and where most of the luxury hotels are located.

To experience more of the island, go kayaking at Chalk Sound National Park, take a snorkeling tour or try kiteboarding at Long Beach.

Dating back to thousands of years of history,  Egypt  is an ancient and incredible country to visit . The country is home to many UNESCO World Heritage Sites and Natural Wonders of the World, including the Pyramids of Giza.

Cairo, the capital and the largest city of Egypt, has an international airport that connects with major cities around the world. There are also a few cruise lines that stop at Port Said in Cairo. Apart from the international airport in Cairo, there are other smaller airports around the city that you can fly to.

Other than the capital city, there are other ancient and significant cities such as Giza, Memphis, Saqqar, Luxor and Aswan . Throughout these cities you’ll find many historical monuments and are part of the UNESCO Heritage sites.

You need at least one to two weeks to explore and experience what Egypt has to offer. One of the best places to stay is Giza Pyramids View Inn where the rooms offer views of the pyramids.

The best and the peak season in Egypt is during the winter season and February falls in the winter season. Offering pleasant weather when compared to the rest of the month s, Egypt is one of the best countries to visit in February.

During the month, the average temperature ranges between 59 to 66 degrees Fahrenheit. This makes it ideal to explore the iconic monuments, cruise the Nile River, and scuba dive into the underwater world of the Red Sea. February is one of the best months to delve into Laos’ culture and natural wonders. While definitely on the banana pancake trail, Laos sees fewer visitors than Thailand or Vietnam and is a haven for those seeking a more tranquil escape in Southeast Asia.

February is one of the best times to visit as the rain bids its adieu and the temperature is neither too hot nor too cold which makes it excellent for outdoor activities.

In addition to the plethora of activities in February, you will love the country for its gorgeous natural scenery, friendly locals, and delicious cuisine . Places not to miss in Laos are definitely the city of Luang Prabang for its proximity to the  Kuang Si Falls  and Vang Vieng for its beautiful rock formations.

Make sure to leave time to explore lesser-known destinations like the towns of Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi.

Furthermore, the Mighty Mekong flows right through Laos. Y ou can enjoy boat trips on this amazing river but also taste local delicacies out of the river like fried Mekong seaweed crackers with chili peppers and garlic.

From Wattay Airport, you can easily reach the center of the capital Vientiane . Busses and trains leave from the capital to every corner of the country.

I would recommend staying for at least four weeks to really immerse yourself in the Lao ambiance and to have enough time to slow travel the country.

6. Norway (Where to go in February for adventure-lovers!)

• Average temp: 30° F high, 22° F low 

Norway, and especially the northern portion above the Arctic Circle, is the perfect destination for an adventurous vacation in February. It’s the perfect place to see the northern lights and try other activities like riding a snowmobile or going ice fishing. 

Plan to visit northern Norway for at least 6 days. A longer trip will give you more chances to see the northern lights and will give you time to visit smaller areas like Narvik and Senja.

Unless you’re visiting other countries in northern Europe, plan to start and end your trip in Tromsø, where you’ll find the biggest airport in the region. 

There are weeks during the winter in Norway when Tromsø and other areas see 0 minutes of sunlight each day. By February, the days are starting to get longer and the locals are more friendly . It feels as though the entire region is starting to come back to life as the sun starts to shine longer and longer each day. 

The northern lights are a natural phenomenon , so there’s no way to guarantee that you’ll see them during your visit. You can increase your chances by visiting for several days and visiting areas away from sources of light pollution. 

For a unique and unforgettable experience, you can stay in an arctic dome in northern Norway. If you’re lucky, you might even see the northern lights from your warm bed inside the dome.

Kenya is one of the best countries to travel to in February. The climate is mild and mostly dry, which is perfect for safari, and the chances of wildlife spotting – including baby animals and a wide variety of birds – is fantastic. February is also a great time of year for hiking and climbing.

You can do a lot during a  12-day action-packed safari trip to Kenya , especially if you use a tour provider like  Sense of Africa .

Most tours begin and end in Nairobi , where you can visit the Giraffe Centre, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the Karen Blixen Museum, and more. 

From here, you can tailor your tour to visit (and stay at) various game parks. Some favorites are Samburu National Reserve, Lake Nakuru National Park, and Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Don’t forget to save time to hike at Mount Kenya National Park, home to Africa’s second highest peak.

One of the highlights of any trip to Kenya is the Maasai Mara , which shares the same ecosystem as Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. It is one of the most famous safari destinations in the world.

The Mara is home to an abundance of lions, elephants, giraffes, buffalos, and cheetahs, as well as the elusive leopard and endangered black rhino . Be sure to pack your binoculars!

Here, you can also do a Maasai village tour. On the tour, you’ll practice your high jumps, chant with members of the Maasai tribe, go inside a typical Maasai home, and learn about the Maasai culture.

You can also opt to take a hot air balloon ride over the Mara or have breakfast on a riverbank, while watching hippos and crocodiles swim in the Mara River.

8. French Polynesia (where to travel in February for warmth!)

• Region : Oceania
• Fly into: Papeete International Airport

February is the perfect time to visit French Polynesia if you’re looking for an escape from the cold winter weather. During this month, visitors can expect temperatures to range from 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, making it a great time to soak up the sun on one of the many perfect beaches.

During the stay, consider exploring Tahiti’s waterfalls before hiking Moorea’s lush trails . You can reach the trails by taking a  ferry from Tahiti to Moorea .  

Then. explore the underwater wonders of Bora Bora or the tranquil lagoons of Rangiroa. Both of which feature crystal clear water and a truly unforgettable experience.

Visitors won’t have to worry about crowds either, since February is considered low season.  This is the perfect time to find deals on airfare and accommodations.

The sights will be less crowded and the beaches may feel empty.  For travelers ready to splurge, check out the Four Seasons Resort in Bora Bora for excellent service and stunning views.

To get to French Polynesia, most travelers fly into Papeete before flying or boating off to the other islands.

If possible, visit this beautiful country for at least a week to experience all that French Polynesia has to offer.

Travelers should note that in the touristy areas, English is common. However, keep in mind that English may not be widely spoken in off the beaten path areas, so brushing up on some basic French phrases is a good idea.

9. Guatemala (an underrated destination on this list of best countries to visit in February)

• Average temp : 78°F high  / 56°F low

Guatemala is known as “the land of eternal spring,” with much of the country enjoying pleasant, mild days year-round. However, February may just be the best time to visit, boasting warm, sunny weather in the middle of the dry season.

The nearly perfect weather makes it an ideal time to tackle a hike up one of the volcanoes that the country is known for.

The most famous of these is the trek up Volcan Acatenango, which allows for a unique experience to witness Volcan Fuego . It’s one of the most active volcanoes in all of Central America.

If you prefer less adventurous activities, there’s plenty more that Guatemala has to offer. Spending a few days in Antigua is a must to explore its colonial gems. The city was destroyed by a giant earthquake in 1773 and rebuilt, and its attractions offer a look into its history and resiliency.

After spending some time in Antigua, it’s highly recommended that you head over to Lake Atitlan. There are about a dozen Mayan villages that surround the lake, each offering a different vibe and feel.

You will gain a fascinating look into traditional Mayan culture – and the views of the lake and surrounding volcanoes are unreal.

If you have more time, head over to the ruins of Tikal . These ruins are one of the most important ancient cities of pre-Columbian Mayan civilization.

Another attraction worth visiting is Semuc Champey, a natural monument consisting of a series of cascading turquoise pools nestled in the lush jungle.

Are you looking for where to go in February? Add the Maldives to the list! This place is what your screensaver image was showing at least once in your lifetime, and you have probably wondered “Is this place even real?”.

No matter if you decide to have a more active vacation and invest  10 to 14 days in The Maldives , or if you just plan to lay on a beach for at least a week, February is the best time to visit this awesome tropical paradise.

If you are looking for sunny and warm destinations in February, Cuba is the perfect place for you. It’s one of the best hot destinations in February to visit!

Located in the Caribbean, Cuba is famous for many things including classic cars, stunning beaches, cigars, rum and more.

February is one of the best months to visit Cuba . It’s the dry season (no risk of hurricane) and the temperatures are lovely. You can expect an average of 78°F (25°C).

The  Netherlands  offers a unique getaway experience. It easily makes this list of the best countries to visit in February. You can expect chilly but manageable weather with occasional rain, so packing layers and a waterproof jacket is key .

While the winter climate may be crisp, the atmosphere is anything but dull due to the Carnival celebrations. The festivities are particularly prominent in the southern regions like Limburg and North Brabant , with colorful parades and fantastical costumes.

Getting to the Netherlands is straightforward. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport serves as a major hub for numerous international flights. Once in the country, the highly efficient public transportation system, including trains and buses, makes navigating to different regions easy and convenient.

A week-long trip would allow you to enjoy the Dutch Carnival while also exploring the highlights of the country.

Amsterdam, with its famous canals and museums, and Utrecht, known for its medieval architecture, should be on your list. Rotterdam is another cool option with great architecture and a fun vibe – don’t miss Kinderdijk with its iconic windmills just outside Rotterdam.

13. Indonesia (a bucket list country to visit in February!)

Indonesia is a perfect destination in February if you’re looking to experience the archipelago without the high-season crowds. 

It is technically a rainy season, but places like Bali, even in rainy times, are great. With showers often occurring mostly at nights, it leaves the days sun-kissed.

Meanwhile, destinations like Raja Ampat boast their best weather, offering crystal-clear visibility for snorkelling and diving.

Direct international flights cater to major hubs like Jakarta and Denpasar . If you’re coming from Europe or the Americas, you might have a layover at popular transit points such as Singapore’s Changi Airport, Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia, or even Dubai International Airport.

For a first-time visit to Indonesia, which boasts over 17,000 islands, a 2-week stay is recommended. A typical itinerary might include a few of the best areas in Bali , such as Ubud, Seminyak and Uluwatu.

Be sure to save time for a visit to Java to see the magnificent Borobudur Temple and to climb Mount Bromo. If you have more time, take a trip to Flores for komodo dragons or Sumatra to see the orangutans in their natural habitat.

As for the festivals, February is the time of Chinese New Year,  locally known as “Imlek.” This festival ushers in vibrant street performances, colourful parades, and intricate lantern displays, especially in cities with significant Chinese-Indonesian populations like Jakarta or Surabaya.

14. Australia

Australia is, without a doubt, one of the best countries to visit in February.

You’ll be heading Down Under during the country’s summer months, so the weather will be at its best in the most popular areas for tourists. Despite this, the crowds (and prices) will be starting to lower as local children head back to school and international arrivals decrease. 

Given the size of the country (roughly the same area as the continental U.S.!), and the lengthy flight (and subsequent jetlag) to get there, Australia is not country in which to spend a mere few days. Two weeks should be the absolute minimum amount of time you allocate , but if you can stretch it out to a month, you’ll be greatly rewarded.

Sydney is a particularly great spot in February, which is convenient, as most international flights will arrive there. The city’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras celebrations kick off in the middle of a month and last for a whopping 17 days . It’s one of the largest Pride events in the world and you can expect parties, film festivals, parades, art shows, and more.

Down in Melbourne, February provides the perfect climate for driving the Great Ocean Road . This iconic coastal road starts from just outside of the city and is regularly named one of the most scenic in the world.

If you are looking for one of the best destinations in February with culture, fascinating history, beautiful architecture, and striking coastlines, then you will love the tiny Mediterranean island of Malta. 

By visiting in February, you will get mild temperatures ranging from 16℃ (61℉) to 10℃ (50℉) and lower lodging prices, given you will be there outside of the summer high season.

To get there, fly into the Malta International Airport. Then, if you have a few days, base yourself in nearby Valletta, the historic and peninsular capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Also north of Buenos Aires, Iguazu Falls are on the border with Brazil. Spend at least 2 nights to visit both the Argentine side and the Brazilian side for a full experience.

You’ll want to stay at least a week – preferably two – to see the most popular Italian cities.  The largest airport in Italy is just outside Rome, so this is the best place to begin your trip.

Winter – from December to February – is the best time to visit the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, including Kuala Lumpur.

The world’s highest twin towers, the Petronas Twin Towers, are a must-visit attraction in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, offering breathtaking views of the capital’s skyline.

To experience Malaysia, combine Kuala Lumpur with other west coast destinations. The charming George Town, on the island of Penang, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you can wander through historic streets and indulge in as much street food as you can handle.

I think February is one of the best times to visit New Zealand (the later in the month, the better). It's the best temperatures, and you avoid the school holiday traffic.

Ah yes Rhonda! I mean, New Zealand anytime of year sounds awesome but it's definitely deserving of a spot for the month of February, too :)

This is an awesome listm never heard of Turks and Caicos before. The beach locations are stunning. Seychelles and Maldives are at the top of my bucketlist

If there's ever a time to escape the cold, dark days and lift new year spirits, this is it. From summer sun in South America and culture hopping in Asia , to chic city breaks in Paris or Copenhagen , here we round up the best places to visit in February 2024. Tulum, Mexico

Over the past decade, this corner of Mexico ’s Caribbean coastline has become a bucket list staple for influencers and wellness enthusiasts. As a result, finding your own white-sand beach for the afternoon is a little tricky, but with miles of pristine shore and crystal-clear waters, that’s the epitome of a first-world problem. It’s like Tulum was designed for social media feeds. Beauty spots are at every turn, while the clever minds behind the design of the sleek hotels, bars and restaurants here have tapped into the pockets of aesthetes and lovers of all things boho-chic. History buffs head to the mysterious archaeological sites and Mayan ruins slightly inland, while many others opt to simply soak up the dry season’s rays poolside or in the glitzy beach clubs.

However, sightseeing isn’t much fun in the blistering summer heat when temperatures exceed 40C. Visiting in February means you’re more likely to stick to the bucket list itinerary and explore elsewhere while you’re at it. Stand before the Grand Pyramids of Giza, explore the sandy desert scape by camel, and wile away the hours in the many museums.

Never turn down a trip to the Maldives , even in monsoon season (May to November). Courchevel, France

Courchevel is the superstar ski resort of the French Alps. If you're travelling in a group, the beautiful  Chalet Montanum  sleeps nine and offers a true ski-in, ski-out experience – there's slope access from the end of the drive.

Cotswolds, United Kingdom

If there’s one thing that can make a British winter appealing, it’s the thought of getting cosy in the Cotswolds . Amid a quintessentially English landscape, publicans pull artisan ales, sipped by roaring fires. Frosty walks ramble past country manors and up green hills topped with Iron Age forts. But while its home to some of the most beautiful villages in the UK , this isn’t back-in-time England. Clued-in movers and shakers have helped sow an ultra-modern crop of Michelin-starred restaurants in the Cotswolds between the organic spacs, antiques stores and tea rooms. Paris, France

The City of Love should be an obvious pick in February, but potential suitors are all-too-often put off by the weather. Très grosse erreur . Anyone who knows the French knows they scarper tout de suite in summer, shuttering restaurants, frustrating foreigners and not giving a tiny French fig. Come instead in winter, when everything’s open, visitors are fewer, reservations easier and rates lower. All the best stuff is indoors anyway: cute, candle-lit bistros; echoey art museums; bo-bo (bourgeois-boho) bars. South Pigalle – or SoPo – still sizzles as one of Paris ’s hottest spots, where the best table is at Bouillon Pigalle. The queue around the block is worth it – three-course meals with drinks here can cost less than €25, practically unheard of within the list of the best restaurants in Paris .

Where to stay: Parisians in the know will recommend Château Voltaire , once the showroom for cult fashion label Zadig & Voltaire and now a super chic bolthole on the rue Saint-Roch. In terms of Paris hotels with a great location, it's hard to beat La Réserve which faces the Grand Palais and, at a slightly greater distance, the Eiffel Tower, overlooks the Champs-Elysées and is only a few doors down from the presidential palace. For Eiffel Tower views, take over The Margaux , a three-bedroom Airbnb apartment on the Left Bank.

Swap the white sludge on your doorstep for a bright white beach in the Bahamas . Those in the know head for the Caribbean islands in sleepy February, just as the December holiday crowds have dispersed and before the raucous spring breakers descend in March, for the pristine sands, laidback lifestyle and 18th-century streets tinged with the scent of frangipani. Take advantage of the relative quiet with a barefoot stroll across Pink Sands beach, consider a diving class after a long lunch on Harbour Island or while away the afternoon with a mojito and a novel – what's the rush?

Winter on the White Isle isn’t as bonkers as it sounds. It’s the best time to experience Ibiza as the locals know it – almond trees flush pink-white with blossom; beach bars and pavement cafés are laid-back not lairy; and the tapas and drinks come cheap. Bargain isn’t a word too often associated with this Balearic, but without the club crowds, proprietors look to lure customers with deals. During winter nights, island restaurants participate in Gastrojueves – Gastro Thursdays – where meals are offered half-price. Craving a blowout? Small towns across Ibiza celebrate Carnival with parades early in the month; superclubs such as Pacha throw the after-parties. Really, though, it’s all about taking time to soak up the quieter side of Ibiza. Ibiza’s bohemian north is the best place to discover a more peaceful side to the island, and one of the smartest experiences here is found at Ibiza Horse Valley . This sanctuary rehabilitates mistreated animals and reintroduces them to riding, offering horseback trips to the White Isle’s untouched forest, remote mountaintops and secret beaches .

Where to stay: The address to know about is OKU Ibiza , a laid-back luxury retreat with two serene swimming pools, wabi-sabi-inspired decor and regular yoga sessions. Its topography is diverse and dramatic, with adventures of many kinds: go driving over dunes and diving in the marine-rich waters off the Musandam Peninsula; stay at remote Bedouin camps or polished-luxury resorts from desert to beach. February is the last month of winter in Oman , which means it’s still bearably hot rather than unbearably hot.

New Orleans, USA

After the festivities, crawl out of bed for a meal of gumbo over cheese grits and stroll through the cobblestone alleyways of the French Quarter to a soundtrack of Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin. What seems like a Canaletto painting comes to life every year when revellers gather for three weeks of masked debauchery. Those seeking the quiet charms of the floating city will be disappointed, but if you dare to join the huddled masses you'll be rewarded with an otherworldly experience. You can flaunt your finery on the Rialto, dance the quadrilles at the Doge's ball and wake up the next morning in a luxurious four-poster bed in your very own Venetian palace wondering if it was all a dream.

Cartagena, Colombia

A riotous clash of Spanish, Latin and Caribbean cultures, the Colombian seaside city is a feast for the senses, with corn-yellow colonial villas and palm-dotted plazas, citrus-kissed ceviche and potent rum cocktails. True, old Cartagena ’s picturesque romance has turned it into a well-known destination. But the locals in its Getsemani neighbourhood still cling to artsy authenticity: streets here belong to bright murals and vagabond musicians, Champeta dance clubs (Afro-Caribbean beats meet salsa) and hip restaurants (find Di Silvio Trattoria’s thin-crust pizzas in a former soap factory). Ready to dial it down? Rent a boat for the one-hour ride to the Rosario Islands, where simple beach shacks pour Mojitos into coconuts on peaceful, powder-soft beaches. February sea breezes take the edge off summer’s humidity.

Finnish Lapland

February in Finnish Lapland might be bracing, but there’s plenty going on here that’s hot. How about hopping aboard the world’s only sauna gondola – a wooden cable car that treats passengers to a steamy ride over the slopes of Ylläs Ski Resort? Or working up a sweat by fat-biking across Ylläs National Park’s stark-white scenery (the thick treads help plucky cyclists pedal in deep snow). Of course, Christmas is high season here, but conditions are every bit as romantic in February, without the sky-high prices or crowds. Northern Lights stalkers also have a good chance of spotting those elusive, swirling illuminations – perhaps best viewed from the Aurora Domes at Harriniva, where igloo-like tents are fitted out with a transparent wall, wood burner and Champagne. Experiences with the Indigenous Sami people of Lapland are becoming ever more popular, but be sure your operator is providing a genuine connection with their culture (rather than a ‘show’). Done right, this kind of tourism helps boost a local economy that can only rely on a lucrative revenue stream – tourism – a few months of the year. Magnetic North Travel , for example, organises time with genuine reindeer herders and their families, so you get a real sense of their way of life.

Kerala, India

If you're dreaming of drifting down Kerala 's tranquil backwaters in relative solitude, wait until February. The tail end of peak season sees low humidity, practically no rain and fewer tour groups to disturb your zen-like state of mind. Whether you prefer to hide away on an elegant houseboat or enjoy southern hospitality at a local homestay, it's impossible not to fall for this state's easygoing charm. Spend your evenings lingering over delicious South Indian thalis, exploring the meandering Dutch canals of Cochin and lazing on Varkala's deserted beaches. Hiring a houseboat to explore the backwaters is undoubtedly a magical experience, but the popularity of the practice has led to some less-than-honourable operations that cut corners and pollute the water. Be sure to research the eco credentials of who you’re going with, and consider combining a houseboat tour with a homestay, which keeps your money within the communities you’re visiting.

February is summertime in the Antarctic. Temperatures can soar as high as slightly above freezing, it’s the optimum time to cross the Antarctic Circle, and fluffy baby penguins are toddling around making hay while the sun shines – for up to 24 hours a day. It’s one of the best months to see the extraordinary white icescapes against blue skies, and spot whales – humpbacks minke, orca – gliding below on Zodiac trips.

Bahia, Brazil

It’s carnival time in Brazil – but it’s not only Rio de Janeiro that brings the party. Salvador, capital of Bahía – the north-eastern state and birthplace of Afro-Brazilian culture – hosts bigger, longer and louder festivities. Drumming troupes thunder through the streets playing the region’s signature axé music: a rousing fusion of reggae, merengue and salsa. And while the Sambadrome is the base for carnival activities in Rio, in Salvador it’s the whole city. Caipirinha-weary revellers can recover with a stint at any one of Bahía’s golden, jungle-fringed sands along its 1,000km-long coast. Beach town Trancoso is where Brazilians go on holiday: it’s a languid, curiously hippie-glam mix of billionaires and bohemians.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Home of hygge, layering up is all part of the fun in the undisputed capital of Scandi-cool . The Danes’ design prowess has lately seen the city popularised as a hipster dreamland, but it’s been fabulous far longer than beanie-clad bicyclists have been on Instagram: leading-edge visual arts, high Nordic cooking and fancy coffee are all in the Danish DNA.

Where to stay: Steep yourself in Copenhagen cool at Design Hotel digs Nobis , where contemporary interiors have reinvigorated the former Royal Danish Conservatory of Music, restaurant Niels does frilly things with local, seasonal ingredients, and there’s a traditional sauna to stave off the chill. We also like Hotel Danmark , where bedrooms are styled in a hipster-spartan style, painted deep, inky forest-green with contemporary Danish designs – nab a room on the sixth floor for views of the Tivoli fireworks on a summer’s evening.

Following the Covid pandemic and Sri Lanka's political troubles, tourism to the country has greatly suffered. More recently the country's Tourism Ministry and government have taken many initiatives to revive the industry. And while the foreign office recommends exercising caution, travel to Sri Lanka is allowed. It may also even help to make a difference. According to The Diplomat , "economic analysts are of the view that, if there is an increase in tourist inflows, it could have a positive impact on pulling the nation out of its current economic crisis." Fresh snowfall drives winter sports aficionados to the Rockies in their droves from November , but by February you can take advantage of the optimum skiing conditions at more affordable prices. Aspen glitters the brightest, attracting high rollers more interested in sipping hot chocolate by an open fire than hitting the slopes. Serious skiers head further up to Jackson Hole and Banff, in the picturesque Canadian Rockies.

Where to stay: In Aspen, Hotel Jerome is a solid, square old building of mellowed brick that's been a landmark here since it opened in 1889, stylishly designed to mix the patina of age with the design elements of now. In Banff, you can also kick off your skis at the lavish Fairmont Banff Springs , but when rooms come with awe-inspiring panoramas straight out of The Revenant is it even worth going outside?

Malta is the Mediterranean's sunshine island – with more than 300 days of sunshine a year, even in February the island skims temperatures of 16°C – practically tropical compared to the British average of 7°C . Rio de Janerio, Brazil

Even within the US land borders, there are plenty of warm places to visit. Nearby Mexico and the Caribbean also offer reliable hot weather, golden beaches, and extravagant cocktails to banish thoughts of winter. In the Southern Hemisphere, summer is peaking, from New Zealand to Cambodia . To tick off a true bucket list destination , visit Easter Island. Best warm beaches to visit in February

With chill winds blowing across much of the mainland US, thoughts turn to days spent lazing on golden beaches. Daydream no more. 

1. Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao

• Average temperature: 81°F
• Average hours of daily sun: 9 hours

Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao are often lazily grouped as the ABC islands. Despite their shared Dutch influence, each has emerged distinct from the others in many ways. Except perhaps for their consistently flawless beaches.

February is peak Caribbean season with all three islands basking in blue skies and beach temperatures. The main party is found in Aruba, especially as it’s Carnival month. Head for Oranjestad and Palm Beach to join the parades and parties. 

Blessed with more sand than its rockier siblings, Curaçao is the largest island with the most beaches . Find dramatic cliffs, picture-perfect coves, and Caribbean blues at Grote Knip, Klein Knip, and Playa Lagun.

My top pick is Bonaire. The outlier of the trio, it is lesser-visited but has world-beating diving and a glowing reef only feet offshore. Watersports are a part of daily life here and the island’s 400-plus caves make it a spelunker’s utopia.

2. Raglan, New Zealand

• Average temperature: 66°F
• Average hours of daylight: 14 hours

Growing up a surfer, I had a photo of the famed wave known as Raglan on my wall for 15 years. Amazingly, from the moment I first visited, it lived up to my expectations. Warm and inviting yet dramatic and mind-blowing , it’s a landscape that could only exist in New Zealand. 

February is a great time to explore the coastline of this Waikato region on North Island. Daytime temperatures regularly sit in the mid-70s, water temperatures in the mid-60s, and the sun shines and shines. The primary surf break is at Manu Bay , where waves can run down the coast for a thigh-burning 330 yards. If you are a beginner head for the dramatic black sands of nearby Ngarunui Beach.

Surf sated, head into laidback Raglan, the archetypal surf town . Lively bars, great home-cooking restaurants, cool inns, and a healthily eccentric art scene are all just a two-hour drive from Auckland . 

3. Loreto, Mexico

• Average temperature: 64°F
• Average hours of daylight: 12 hours

Take a road trip down the Baja peninsula and you’ll spend a lot of time alone, staring at cactus fields as the miles tick by. A beacon of cool amid the arid landscape, Loreto is one of Mexico’s Pueblos Mágicos , or Magic Towns. 

Marked for its lovely colonial architecture and rich cultural heritage, its cobbled streets lead you into Mexico of old. The 17th-century Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto, pottery stores, and deeply rooted locals can feel from another world. But among them, you’ll also find boutique hotels, delicious family-run restaurants , and a modern buzz.

Offshore is where Loreto really shines. The pristine islands of the Parque Nacional Bahía de Loreto teem with nature. Deserted beaches fringe an ocean that in February is alive with whales drawn there to feed, mate and calve. 

4. Arabian Desert, Saudi Arabia

• Average temperature: 62°F
• Average hours of daily sun: 8 hours

A vast sea of red-hued sand spreads across most of the Arabian Peninsula. The Arabian Desert is home to extreme temperatures and towering dunes, Bedouin culture, and a diverse wildlife habitat. February is winter, when daytime temperatures hover in the mid-70s and conditions are more agreeable . 

A few hours southwest of Riyadh , Al Kharrarah National Park is a playground for adventure. Follow in the tracks of ancient Egyptians who would surf and shift cargo on sandboards and sleds. Local guides can take you deep into the desert to virgin dunes, where you’ll be the first to lay your line in the sand.

If you’re lucky, winter rainfall will transform the area into a fleeting oasis. Water surging down steep dunes creates a temporary waterfall and the Lake of Liquid Light , which is deep enough to swim in. For a time at least, it may just be the best beach in the world.

Best warm places to visit in the US in February

Happily, there are plenty of locations in the US that enjoy winter sun, with temperatures warm enough to make the most of outside.

5. Fort Lauderdale, Florida

• Average temperature: 69°F

Once the East Coast go-to for raucous spring breakers, Fort Lauderdale has grown up. Today it’s renowned for beaches and boating canals, luxury shopping, and fine dining. And with the weather in Florida in February pushing average high temperatures into the late 70s, it’s become a premium winter vacation destination .

With the sun shining, head straight for Florida’s 23 miles of golden sand beaches . Lay out under swaying palms and blue skies at Las Olas Beach, in the heart of the action. Behind you, Las Olas Boulevard reaches like an artery through the canals and on into the city.

Hop on a riverboat to cruise the canals while sipping Champagne and disembark amid the chic boutiques and shiny hotels flanking Las Olas Boulevard. To end your day gorge at the many sea-to-table restaurants, overflowing with fresh seafood and Floribbean flair .

6. O‘ahu, Hawai‘i

• Average temperature: 65°F

Tropical and temperate O‘ahu offers a blissfully warm February vacation. The natural Hawai‘in entry point from mainland US, its skies are clear and its seas sparkle. Average high temperatures don’t drop below 70, which means the beaches and hiking trails are primed and ready .  

Kick off a stay in the capital, Honolulu . Splicing the chaos of a metropolis with island culture in an awe-inspiring location, it’s at once hectic and laid back. O‘ahu really shines in the wilds, though. Sunrise has never looked better than from the highs of the Makapu‘u Lighthouse Trail , one of more than 200 crisscrossing the island.

Then of course, there are the beaches. Waikiki needs no introduction but it’s the infamous North Shore that steals the show. Home to some of the world’s best waves (for surfers and spectators alike), winter is when the big swells hit. Pull up a towel, sit back and enjoy the show. 

7. Tucson, Arizona

• Average temperature: 55°F

Okay, an average of 55 doesn’t scream warm weather. But with average highs of 69 and little to no rain, Tucson is something of a dream in February. Especially if you love to hike.

Arizona’s second city is engulfed in the enormity of nature. Pass its borders in any direction and you’ll soon find yourself in alien landscapes. Sabino Canyons are the quick and easy option for a scenic stroll. My pick, however, is an hour south amid the desolate grandeur of Elephant Head . 

A huge granite peak traversed by the well-worn East Ridge trail , its summit delivers eye-watering views over the Santa Rita Mountains to the east. Start from Chino Canyon for a challenging trek that takes in the ruins of Old Elephant Head Mill and the abandoned Quantrell Mine. At its peak, the bizarre but brilliant Elephant Shrine is framed by Baboquivari Peak in the distance. Magic.

Best warm places to visit in February around the world

If distance is no object, the world opens up in February with some extraordinary destinations at their finest. Here are three of my favorite and far-flung warm places to visit in February. 

8. Easter Island, Chile

• Average temperature: 75°F
• Average hours of daylight: 13 hours

Don’t mind a long-haul trip ? Deep in the heart of the South Pacific, Easter Island basks in balmy summer temperatures in February. It’s a lovely time to step out of the rat race and immerse yourself in one of the world’s most spellbinding islands.

Your first stop should be the moai statues , 887 giant rock sculptures better known as the Easter Island heads. Trek the Ara O Te Moai ancestral trail where you’ll find fallen heads and on the slopes of Rano Raraku volcano, the quarry they were mined from. Seeing them in place is made only more fascinating by the fact no one knows how the Rapanui people got them there.

For a unique experience, join a guided dive to see the submerged moai near the town of Hanga Roa. There’s excellent diving, snorkeling, and surfing around the coast, served by among others, the lovely white-sand beach at Anakena.  

9. Conil de la Frontera, Spain

• Average temperature: 53°F
• Average hours of daylight: 11 hours

In Andalucía, Spain’s far south, the beaches are wilder and the cities more historic. Cádiz , Europe’s oldest, is a window into 3,000 years of history laid open for exploration. Farther south still, the town of Conil tumbles down cliffs to the beach like a white wave breaking into the Atlantic.

It’s become my default European beach vacation because it’s a fabulous place to soak up the sun, even in winter. February temperatures aren’t scorching hot, but with typically bright sunny days it always feels warmer. 

Instead of sunbathing, get involved. Nearby El Palmar is a miles-long surf mecca with a thriving and friendly beachfront community. Surf schools and camps, buzzing bars with built-in skate ramps, and local ‘cervecerias’ serving 2€ cañas and outrageously good tapas. And there are few better ways than to finish a day with a sunset horseback ride through the surf.

10. Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Yet to garner the attention and investment of other Southeast Asian metropolises like Bangkok and Hanoi , Cambodia’s capital is a rough diamond. In February it swelters under blue skies, yet rainfall and humidity are at their lowest .

Any visit must acknowledge the atrocities of Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge. A trip to Choeung Ek , known as the Killing Fields, is informative and deeply moving. It’s my choice over the Tuol Sleng Museum, which is almost unbearable in its stark grimness. 

But Phnom Penh is so much more than this tragic history. Follow in the footsteps of royalty, war reporters, and Hollywood icons with a stay at the historic Raffles Hotel Le Royal . Dine on delicious Khmer cuisine (but trust me, skip the fried tarantula) at Romdeng restaurant . A non-profit, the waiters are all impoverished Cambodian youths getting training in hospitality. 

And don’t miss the mighty Mekong , my favorite river, alive with life of every kind. Southeast Asia’s great artery, extend your trip with a three-day cruise along it into Vietnam and wonderful Ho Chi Minh City .

Where is hot and cheap in February?

Mexico and many islands of the Caribbean are excellent choices for a hot, budget vacation from the US in February. The great British winter weather: freezing fog, sleet and overcast grey mornings are at their most dismal during February’s 28 (or 29) days, and often seem to have no end in sight.

Fortunately, while it can feel like the longest, the shortest month of the year is broken up with ideal excuses to escape for a final burst of winter sun before the welcome transition into a much milder UK spring .

With a week-long half-term and – love it or hate it – Valentine’s Day , February is primed for family holidays for some far-flung fun in the sun and romantic long weekends for overseas one-on-one time.

Want to know where is hot in February? Here are 15 warm places to visit in February where the sun is shining and the temperatures are nice.

The northern hemisphere is dark and cold in the month of February, and many Europeans, as well as Americans and Canadians, are longing for warmer temperatures and sunshine. 

These 15 places have a minimum temperature of 20 degrees (68 °F) with plenty of sunshine and little to no rain during the month of February.

The Phillippines is a large island nation in Asia and Boracay is one of the most beautiful islands. February also happens to be one of the best periods to visit Boracay as the sun is shining and there is little to no rain. 

With temperatures averaging at 27-30 °C, it’s neither too cold or too warm. The sea temperature is nice as well with an average of 27 °C.

Dominican Republic

If you’re American or Canadian and want to escape the cold and darkness, the Dominican Republic is one of the best places to go where it’s warm and sunny in February.

Rainfall is at its lowest of the year and the average temperature is somewhere around 28.9 °C making it an ideal holiday destination in February.

If you want to go on an adventure which you could combine with beaches and sunny weather, then Borneo in Malaysia is one of the best places to travel to in February.

Borneo is one of the largest islands in the world and is renowned for its biodiversity and being home to the Orangutans.

Thailand is one of the most popular winter destinations in the world, and while February is one of the busiest periods, one can’t simply deny the beauty of the islands in Thailand. 

This time of the year sees little no rain all over the country, and if you’re visiting Phuket or Krabi it’s typically the month with least rainfall. 

Average temperature : 30 °C.

Although February is one of the busiest periods in Phu Quoc, it’s also one of the best months to visit. If you want to travel to an island where it’s hot in February, Phu Quoc is a great choice with paradise beaches, pleasant temperatures between 27-30 °C with little to no rain.

Isla Holbox

Isla Holbox is one of my favorite destinations in Mexico, and while all the Yucatan Peninsula, as well as Cabo San Lucas, have pleasant temperatures in February, I want to recommend this particular island, which is located north of Cancun. 

It’s not one of the hottest months, but it’s generally dry and the average temperature is around 27 °C and 24 °C in the water.

While Cubans consider February as winter and one of the chillier months, most international visitors are happy for the many hours of sunshine and average temperature of 25 °C.

No matter if you want to explore the beaches of Varadero or the many smaller islands, or wander the historic streets of Havana, you can expect a pleasant climate and weather with little to no rain.

The Maldives is renowned for its overwater villa bungalows, paradise beaches, and romantic packages fit for the most luxurious and dreamy honeymoon. And February is one of the best months to travel to the Maldives with temperatures around 28 °C and little to no rain. 

Although Maldivian luxury resorts require a larger budget, there are also local islands that can be visited on a budget. I recommend Kandolhu if you’re planning a honeymoon or want a romantic getaway with your partner.

Gran Canaria

While Las Palmas, the capital of Gran Canaria typically sees colder temperatures and more rain in this time of the year, the southern tourist towns of Maspalomas and further south generally have pleasant weathers with plenty of sunshine. 

Typically, the temperature will range from 20-25 °C and Puerto Rico and Amadores usually have the sunniest days.

Compared to the other Canary Islands, the south of Gran Canaria is generally warmer in February, and it’s one of the few destinations within the European Union that have temperatures over 20 °C in this time of the year.

Oahu (Hawaii)

Compared to other winter months, precipitation levels are at its lowest in February on the Hawaiian island Oahu. With average temperatures of 25-27 °C, it’s a pleasant destination to travel to if you want to get some sun without leaving the U.S. 

The other Hawaiian islands also have less rain in the month of February compared to other winter months. 

Average temperature : 25-27 °C.

If want to travel to the Caribbean in February, St. Lucia is one of the best destinations with plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures. It’s a great destination for snorkeling or a romantic getaway.

The average temperature is somewhere around 20 degrees Celcius in Miami this time of the year with highs of 24°C and sea temperature around 24°C. It’s one of the few places in the continental U.S where it’s hot in February and the sun is shining with little to no rain.

I honestly don’t blame you! February isn’t often the month that people look to travel around Europe . It’s usually the month of dreaming of travel through rainy burry windows and huddling under a blanket in the living room.

But many of the winter months – particularly February – are actually great for travelling. You can find off-season prices , very low-cost flights, much fewer crowds, and surprisingly good weather if you know where to look! And that, in my opinion, is the recipe for a good trip.

The majority of these places actually islands. Primarily the Spanish islands but also, Greek, and a few Italian islands too. This is mainly due to their proximity to the Atlantic Ocean which draws in warmer currents from Africa.

However, there are a few mainland locations that are warm in February as well. And they’re all worth a visit due to the fewer crowds and lower prices .

On Madeira, you could hike the infamous Pico de Arieiro, explore the island’s dramatic landscapes or relax on one of its many beaches. It’s much easier to explore Madeira with a hire car than public transport, but this gives you the freedom to go on a few road trips around the island too.

February is an ideal time to go hiking, cycling, and exploring the island’s picturesque towns and historic landmarks. Wander through the narrow cobblestone streets of Palma’s Old Town, marvel at the Gothic architecture of the Cathedral of Santa Maria, or sample local delicacies at traditional markets and cosy restaurants.

Top Tip: February marks the almond blossom season, in Mallorca. If you visit during this time, you’ll be able to see the island’s almond trees in bloom. The pink and white flowers against the backdrop of blue skies are very pretty.

15. Rhodes, Greece – AverageTemperature 15°C

Rhodes was the first place we ever visited in Greece. While we visited in September, the island is also a fantastic place for a winter getaway. In February, you’ll find mild weather, sunny skies, and a whole range of things to do .

I absolutely loved Seven Springs in Rhodes. it’s a beautiful natural park with waterfalls and hiking trails and a great place to explore in the winter without getting too hot.

Furthermore, you can also visit the beautiful town of Lindos with its whitewashed buildings and hilltop acropolis and explore Rhodes’s old town for the historic cobbled streets, castles, and museums.

Whilst you won’t really be able to catch a tan in February, the beaches in Rhodes are still worth visiting. St Paul’s Bay is easily my favourite and the heart shape that you can see from the top of Lindos Acropolis is utterly beautiful.

The best places to travel in February prove that the shortest month of the year is full of vacation opportunities. Aside from all the romantic Valentine’s Day weekend getaways, it’s also a great time to embrace winter sports, check out new hotel openings, and shuck off the doldrums of January with a warm-weather escape . Whatever type of trip you choose, there’s no better mood-booster than a vacation in the middle of winter.

Here, we’ve rounded up 11 of the best places to visit in February, from storied ski slopes to remote islands. It’s never too early to start cashing in those paid vacation days, after all.

And we’re not the only ones taking notice of this Central American country: Alaska Airlines began daily service from Los Angeles to Guatemala City in December 2023, and Delta has bumped up the frequency of winter flights from Atlanta to Guatemala.

After you land, take advantage of the country’s staggering natural beauty and expanding tourism infrastructure. On the Mother Nature front, explore glorious wonders like Lake Atitlán and the active (but still explorable) Pacaya Volcano. The charming colonial town of Antigua, meanwhile, boasts both new attractions like MUNAG (National Museum of Art Guatemala) and classics like Café No Sé , the first mezcal bar outside of Mexico.

Stowe, Vermont

Stowe has long been a top ski destination for East Coasters, thanks to its mix of high-quality intermediate and black diamond runs. Home to two different mountains, Spruce Peak and Mount Mansfield, a lift connects the two, making it easy for visitors to ski both on the same day. The town itself is also downright adorable, with old-fashioned general stores, steepled churches, and some of the best accommodations in New England. (And a Ben & Jerry’s factory.)

Stay at Topnotch Resort and lean into the winter season by roasting marshmallows at the outdoor fire pits, taking sleigh rides via the equestrian center, or enjoying a massage at the award-winning spa. Newer to the scene—and perfect for ski bunnies—is Tälta Lodge , which opened in 2021 right next to Mount Mansfield’s double black diamond runs. Every aspect of the hotel caters to outdoor adventurers, from the private ski lockers in the hallways to the hot tubs for relaxing muscles after a long ski day.

Costa Rica is always on our minds, but the country’s dry season (December to April) is probably the best time to visit. Sink into the pura vida lifestyle as you surround yourself with misty waterfalls, deserted beaches, and protected jungles. Cocos Island National Park, the only island in the eastern Pacific with a rainforest, is a world-class diving destination replete with hammerhead sharks, giant manta rays, sea turtles, and dolphins. La Amistad National Park is another unique site, with cloud forests, glacial valleys, and a rare tropical alpine grassland (say that five times fast). It’s also home to Cerro Chirripó, the highest mountain in Costa Rica .

Along with those natural wonders, the hotels and resorts in Costa Rica are an equally compelling reason to visit. Stay at one of the 50 colorful casitas at Nayara Gardens , a family-friendly resort where spacious balconies and outdoor showers afford views of the Arenal Volcano. Or hop next door to Nayara Springs , which earned a spot on our 2022 Gold List. This adults-only hotel has 29 tented rooms, a wine bar, hot spring pools, and a delightful sloth sanctuary.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe is sunny and warm most of the year, but the New Mexico capital still gets its fair share of snowy weather—that snow looks extra beautiful against the adobe buildings and rock formations though. The best snow conditions of the year typically occur in February, beckoning travelers to the 77 trails at Ski Santa Fe . Back in town, places like the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and Museum of International Folk Art provide culture away from the nippy weather. And if you get really cold, there’s nothing like the state’s supply of green chile to warm you from the inside out.

Readers’ Choice Award favorite Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi has a tangible warmth to it, with gaslit kiva fireplaces and hand-carved four-poster beds adorning the rooms. The downtown Adobe hotel is just a block from the Plaza, but the grilled elk tenderloin and achiote chile-roasted duck breast at the in-house Anasazi Restaurant might tempt you to stay put for the evening.

If Egypt is still an unchecked item on your bucket list, February might be the time to take the plunge. The month is particularly well-suited for a Nile River cruise , with mild weather ensuring you can actually enjoy pit stops in Luxor and Aswan, and not melt while walking through ancient tombs and temples, where temperatures rise well above 105 degrees during the summer.

More than 300 cruise ships sail along the Nile, but among the best and oldest is the S.S. Sudan . The ship moves at a leisurely pace, allowing passengers to take in the nature and architecture scattered along the riverbanks. You’ll definitely be able to relax, as there are only 23 cabins on board; but when the time comes for adventuring, the ship’s excursions include a visit to the Temple of Dendera near Qena, the temple of Kom Ombo, and Elephantine Island.

A chain of 26 atolls and more than 1,000 islands in the Indian Ocean, the Republic of Maldives is one of the most sought-after tropical destinations in the world. It’s also one of the best places to visit in February, when temps remain in the low 80s with little risk of rain—superb conditions for snorkeling and diving. If you’re a scuba or underwater expert, good news: Manta rays are easier to spot this month, as they cluster to feed on the surfeit of plankton near the atolls, and it’s also the start of whale shark season, another plankton-feeding animal that can grow up to 40 feet in length.

Hole up at Alila Kothaifaru Maldives , which opened in 2022 in the Raa Atoll. The Hot List-winning property offers true luxury and relaxation: Think perfect white beaches, endless palm trees, and thick jungle vegetation. The 80 villas (all with pools) are divided between overwater villas and beach villas, and guests can enjoy on-site restaurants and bars, as well as a spa tucked away deep in the jungle.

Telluride, Colorado

Easily one of the best ski towns in the U.S., this Colorado city rises above the pack with its gorgeous location, casual crowds, and ski experiences that are refreshingly free of artifice. Telluride has a whopping 148 trails of varying lengths and difficulties, as well as sublime winter sports like heli-skiing and snowbiking. For extra bragging rights, enjoy a four-course tasting menu at Alpino Vino , the highest restaurant in the country at 11,966 feet.

When it comes time to rest your head, the location of Dunton Town House truly can’t be beat, sitting on a pretty street adjacent to Telluride's main drag and gondola. The property could easily be mistaken for an Alpine chalet, with its hand-carved antiques, in-room fireplaces, and faux-fur throws. Plus, the B&B can only house ten people at a time, further cementing that home away from home feeling.

Jaipur, India

The Jaipur Literature Festival—one of the largest literary festivals in the world—is a 17-year-old, five-day extravaganza (February 1–5, 2024) drawing heavy-hitting arty types to Rajasthan’s Pink City for lectures, debates, and readings. This year’s roster features dozens of speakers, ranging from award-winning novelists to literary critics and art historians.

Another compelling reason to visit Jaipur this year: Villa Palladio Jaipur , a Hot List 2023 winner. The boutique hotel is a riotous ode to Rajasthani craftsmanship and color (especially hot red), featuring delicious details like hand-painted walls and bubbling fountains. Hole up in one of the nine dollhouse-like rooms and soak up views of the lesser Aravallis—all followed by Tibetan spa treatments and homemade Indian dinners.

Coastal Mississippi

New Orleans may be synonymous with Mardi Gras , but the coastal region of neighboring Mississippi embraces the season with equal gusto and a fraction of the crowds. Krewes host parades, including an assortment of more than 100 floats that glide around Biloxi on Fat Tuesday (which falls on February 14 in 2024, but you’ll want to visit earlier in the month to enjoy all the parties leading up to it). Duck into the city’s Mardi Gras Museum to see costumes, beads, and photographs documenting three centuries of celebration.

There’s also a kids’ parade in Pascagoula, and balls throughout the month—black tie and gowns required. And best of all, most bakeries in the region will also offer a King Cake, a pastry iced in the same shades and served in slices (whoever finds the plastic baby in their piece must provide the cake next year). Try a classic recipe from the Mockingbird Café in Bay St. Louis, or Melissa’s in Gulfport.

Tuscany, Italy

Bypass the summer crowds with a winter visit to Tuscany—one of the best places to travel in February. Start out by spending a few days in Florence : Book supper at the Massimo Bottura-run restaurant inside Gucci’s trippy flagship in the city center, Gucci Garden ; and explore the Uffizi and Accademia galleries virtually tourist-free. Then head to the coastal, Belle Epoque-era town of Viareggio—a little over 50 miles west of Florence—to celebrate Carnival.

While a major celebration in all of Italy, the Tuscan approach to Carnival is different from Venice’s iconic masked balls. Famous for building some of the world’s superyachts, Viareggio’s celebrations (February 3–24, 2024) include papier-mâché floats that are bitingly satirical, and the rest of Italy watches to see what current events will be targeted most mercilessly each year. Finish off the trip with a stay at the 5-star COMO Castello del Nero , a converted 12th-century estate in the Chianti region that’s been repurposed by the ultra-luxe Singaporean hotel chain.

Palm Springs, California

Palm Springs relishes its reputation as a chic enclave of mid-century design all year, but never more so than in February during Modernism Week . The event takes place from February 15 to 25 in 2024, featuring more than 350 events ranging from home tours to architecture lectures. (Tickets for every event tend to sell out quickly, so book as early as possible.) You can also visit the 200-acre Sunnylands complex, with its haute modern pink-roofed mansion built by the late media magnate Walter Annenberg and his wife. To explore houses that are usually off-limits, join one of the self-driven Signature Home tours, where visitors will see houses built in a variety of modernist styles.

Book a stay at Casa Cody , a 30-room hotel tucked away in the desert like a secret garden. It‘s the oldest operating hotel in Palm Springs, with velvet furnishings and wood-beamed cottages providing a nice contrast to the stark modernism you’ll be immersed in all week. Take a leisurely stroll around the bougainvillea-draped pathways, or take in the views of the San Jacinto Mountains as you enjoy breakfast made from the on-site garden.

Still, Winter sun in Europe can often be hit or miss. Sometimes places like Spain and Portugal are AMAZING- often the hottest places in Europe in February. But other times… well, the weather gods don’t always get the memo.

Still, here are some places which are (almost!) guaranteed to provide some winter sun and are definitely the warmest places Europe in February.

There’s a pretty good chance they’ll also be warm in January and March too, but apparently, February is the month when we all crave some sunshine! (It’s also when school half term is too!)

The warmest place in Europe in February – pick a European Island!

What I find really interesting is that most of these places are islands.

I should probably have paid better attention in geography, but I have no idea if they’re warm BECAUSE they’re islands- or because they happen to be a little closer to the equator than other places in mainland Europe. 

Sadly, many of these places are not easily reached on a road trip around Europe – but there’s nothing to say you can’t park up your car or camper and fly off for a few days to some of the best islands in Europe! 

Menorca, Spain – one of the hottest places in Europe in February!

Often overshadowed by its big sister Mallorca, the Balearic Island of Menorca is still somewhat of a hidden gem in Europe, and even more so in the winter months.

How warm does it get in February?

Benefitting from a mild Mediterranean climate, beautiful winter skies, and a lush landscape, it’s a great place to escape the winter blues and is easily one of hottest places in Europe in February.

It also doesn’t rain a lot in Menorca at any time of the year, but in the cooler months, December and January are typically wetter than February, which sees around 10.5 daylight hours and an average temperature of 15 degrees.

The winds will whip away any lingering clouds, and the island will be bathed under blue skies.

It may be one of the Warmest Places in Europe in February, but what is there to DO?

Some popular winter activities include:

• discovering the island’s pristine secret beaches , which will be wonderfully deserted in February.
• walking the incredible Camí de Cavalls  – an ancient track that circles the island and provides an incredible way to discover the island’s coastline and history.
• Sampling gin  – the island’s tipple of choice – at a local distillery.
• Or visiting the island’s archaeological ruins – Menorca is home to an impressive 1,500 megalithic sites which date back to the bronze age and are fascinating to explore.

By visiting Menorca in February, you’ll also benefit from seeing the island in its most authentic state. Even though it’s not as popular as some of the other islands in the Mediterranean, it still gets busy in the summer months when population numbers swell.

In winter,  cities will be much quieter and you’ll benefit from off-season prices too, although your accommodation options won’t be as plentiful.

Gran Canaria- one of the hottest places in Europe in March too!

Home to some of the best weather in Europe in March and February, he Island of Gran Canaria is the ideal destination to go to get some sunshine in Europe.

Although the Canary Islands are west of Africa, they still belong to Europe, are part of Spain, and are easily some of the best islands in Europe.

There are daily flights from all over Europe to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the winter, and it’s a popular escape for northern Europeans who want to get some sunshine. 

February is often cited as the best time to visit this area of Europe . The average temperature in Gran Canaria during winter is about 25-30 degrees in the South of the island.

In Las Palmas, temperatures will be around 15 degrees. Most tourists go to the southern part and it will be between 20-25 degrees in the water depending on which beach. 

One of the best things to do in Gran Canaria is to explore the old town in Las Palmas, known as Vegueta. This is also where you can find the same house that Christopher Colombus lived in for some time in between his voyages!

Some of the best beaches in Gran Canaria are Anfi Beach and Playa de Amadores along with Puerto Rico beach, which are all located in the south.

Visitors to Gran Canaria can also go hiking in the valleys which are full in bloom with plenty of wild fruits growing in the orchards and plantations. The Fataga Valley is one of the most popular hikes.

Tenerife is the place to be when it comes to catching some winter sunshine in Europe in February. It may not be the most beautiful island in the world – but it’s got a lot going for it, especially since it’s one of the warmest places in Europe in February.

It’s the largest of the Spanish Canary Islands. It’s easy to get to from most places in Europe and the flights are relatively inexpensive, especially around winter.

You’ll also find many sandy beaches on the island with stunning ocean views and cliff scenery.

The island maintains pleasant temperatures all year round, making it one of the best winter destinations in Europe.

If you go there anytime from November to February, you’ll find that the temperature always averages above 20 Celsius.

It may be one of the warmest places in Europe in February, but what is there to DO?

The island of Tenerife is known for its dormant volcano called Mount Teide, which funnily enough is the island’s highest peak.

Hence, one of the best things to do on the island is to go take a hike at the Teide National Park. There you’ll experience breath-taking views of Mount Teide as well as Pico Viejo views.

Not many places in Europe can beat Sardinia in terms of winter sunshine . It’s also got some of the best beaches in Europe- just look at the colour of that water.

How warm is it in February?

Despite the fact that days are much shorter compared to the spring and summer, Sardinia still gets a good deal of sun and (especially on the coast) very mild temperatures, with places like Cagliari averaging 15 degrees Celsius during the day, and peaking 18 and even over 20 on very good days.

The sea can get chilly in winter- it is the Mediterranean after all- but it should still be warm enough to sunbathe if you don’t fancy a paddle!

The best time to visit Sardinia in the winter is February . That’s when all Carnival celebrations are taking place.

Yet, for an adrenaline-filled Carnival make sure to head to Oristano – one of Sardinia’s main cities – for Sartiglia. This consists of a series of horse parades and shows with horsemen dressed in traditional costumes and wearing masks.

The highlight is the race to catch a star hanging at the centre of the street with a spear.

Other unmissable  things to do in Sardinia in the winter include

• visiting the many archeological sites – Su Nuraxi of Barumini is the most obvious that comes to mind, but Tharros on the west coast is another must-see;
• going wine and food tasting – Sardinia is famous for its fantastic wines;
• visiting the beautiful cities such as Cagliari, Alghero, Bosa and even Nuoro, where you’ll find an interesting ethnographic museum, perfect to learn more about the history and culture of the island.

Lanzarote – one of the hottest places in Europe in February

Lanzarote is a brilliant destination for winter sun in February- only 3-5 hours away by plane from the main capital cities of Western Europe.

So you could quickly be lying on the beach or walking around a volcano under the intense blue sky. Tempting, isn’t it?

If you fancy sunbathing, some of the best beaches in Lanzarote are:

• Papagayo on the South shore
• Famara beach with high cliffs (especially at sunset)
• the beaches of La Graciosa island, North of Lanzarote.

During the whole European wintertime, you can expect daytime temperatures around 70°F / 21°C. The only inconvenience is sometimes the wind which comes from Africa. But otherwise, it offers great weather all winter long.

Lanzarote is not a beach-only destination! Some of the best things to do in Lanzarote are:

• The tour of the magnificent Timanfaya National Park, with incredible volcanic landscapes where flora has hardly started recovering
• The exploration of the lava tubes where the white structures created by artist César Manrique contrast with the dark rock,
• Hiking all around the volcanoes on the island, particularly Montana Cuervo
• Tasting the wines and learning how the grapes manage to grow despite the lack of rain!!!

Malta – another great Winter Sun Europe destination

Malta is a perfect European destination in winter- and visiting in February is the best time to see this beautiful island without any crowds!

From December to March, the average temperature is around 13-14 Celsius degrees. Maybe it’s not the hottest place in Europe in February and perhaps not the best option for sunbathing and splashing in the sea, but you should remember that Malta is not only beautiful beaches.

Visiting it in winter gives you perfect opportunities to enjoy all of its other attractions. And don’t let the average temperatures fool you. Malta is an extremely sunny country, with above-average hours of sunshine.

Above all, you need to visit the capital of Valletta. This unique city, full of culture, is perfect for winter getaways to enjoy its monuments and wonders.

Also visit Mdina in winter. This city is a historical capital of the island. Often called The City of Silence, it is definitely a place to visit without many people around. Only then you can truly appreciate the real beauty of its mighty yet silent medieval walls.

Other things to do in Malta are:

• Calm sunsets in Golden Bay
• the powerful waves in Ghasri Valley
• Amazing views from Dingli Cliffs 

Malta was a filming location for many cult movies & TV shows such as “Troy”, “The Count of Monte Cristo”, “Gladiator”, and “Game of Thrones”.

If for no other reason, this is a perfect excuse to visit Malta in February and enjoy those locations without the crowds!

Chania- one of the hottest places in Europe in winter

Chania is a gorgeous old town in the west of Crete, the largest island in Greece and one of the most beautiful in the country.

I’ve travelled many times in the eastern Mediterranean over the winter season, and you’ll normally get a good dose of winter sun and much-needed vitamin D. It’s also one of the best places to visit in Europe in October if you can’t make it there during the winter.

Winter is the rainiest time of year in Chania, but you’ll still get 15-20 days of sunshine a month.

Daytime temperatures range between 11 and 16 degrees Centigrade on the coast around Chania – very mild for Europe, even though the locals complain!

It may be one of the hottest places in Europe in February, but what is there to DO?

Some of the best things to do in Chania in winter include: 

• visit the enchanting Old Town. It was built over several centuries, with the Venetians and Turks having a hand in things as well as the Cretans. The former Turkish area around Splantzia Square is the most attractive, with lots of narrow pedestrian-only streets and alleyways to explore.
• the Venetian harbour. Some of the medieval warehouses have been turned into fantastic art exhibition spaces, and there’s also an ancient mosque to explore on the harbour. A winter afternoon is the best time of year to do the harbour wall walk, along the breakwater to the Venetian lighthouse. The view back over the old town to the White Mountains behind is absolutely breathtaking.
• The beaches of the Chania region are hugely popular in summer and the shoulder seasons, but in winter you’ll virtually have them to yourself. There are some stunning beaches within an hour or two of Chania, from tiny Seitan Limania on the nearby Akrotiri peninsula to the unusual pink sand on the island of Elafonissi.

Rethymnon, Crete – perfect winter destination in March

One of my favourite places to escape the cold in Europe is Crete.

While all the main cities in Crete are wonderful in winter, I do think there’s an extra bit of magic to visiting Rethymnon off-season.

Heraklion and Chania have more tourists year-round, while Rethymnon stays a bit emptier. You’ll be able to enjoy the town’s iconic views all to yourself!

The southernmost island in Greece never gets truly cold with temperatures staying between 9 degrees Celsius and 17 degrees Celsius all winter.

Even though it can be chilly at times, most days are pleasant. And it’s the perfect way to explore Crete’s famous archaeology sites that are brutal to see in the heat of summer.

Some of my favourite things to do in Rethymnon in winter are

• walk around the Venetian Harbor at Golden Hour
• enjoy the sunset with a walk along the water.
• visiting the Rimondi fountain
• enjoying raki at Raki Ba Raki bar.

You’ll also want to make sure to spend a few enjoyable meals enjoying Cretan cuisine and washing it down with some great local wine!

Make sure to ask your server for wine recommendations since local wine isn’t exported as often as one might like so it’s hard to find outside of the island.

You can visit as a day trip from Chania or Heraklion, but if you want to spend some time there are some beautiful Rethymnon hotels to pick from, including one built into an old Turkish Bath!

Sicily – one of the hottest places in Europe in March

Also one of the best places to spend Autumn in Europe , Sicily is a great destination for winter sun-seekers. The Aeolian Islands off the northern coast are no exception.

You might have to contend with a pared-back ferry schedule and a few cafe closures, but as long as you’re prepared, the Aeolian Islands make for a great winter escape.

It can get a little nippy in winter, with daytime temperatures dropping to the mid-teens/ 60s. Storm season falls in January, so February/March is an ideal time to go

In winter, the islands are lovely and quiet. You can still enjoy the quaint towns and fabulous restaurants each of the seven Aeolian Islands has to offer.

Boat trips are still an option – you can pair two islands together to make a day trip. It’s also a pleasant time for hiking in the island hinterland.

Treks range from the famous Stromboli volcano summit to short walks around the smaller islands, Salina and Vulcano.

On Lipari, the biggest island, you can while away hours exploring the winding streets. Soak up some rays and get some people-watching in at the main plaza, or escape indoors to the world-class Archaeology Museum.

It’s never too cold for a scoop of Sicilian gelato, and there are plenty of parlours to try.

At the end of the day, no matter which island you’re on, you can curl up with a cocktail or a glass of red wine at a bar overlooking the water – or better still, on your own boutique hotel terrace.

Cyprus – one of the hottest places in Europe in February

Cyprus is a great destination to visit in wintertime for sunshine, and many of the coastal towns such as Larnaca, Limassol, and Paphos are lively year-round thanks to the local population.

What’s even better is to visit the resort town of Ayia Napa where you will find paradise beaches that are packed in the summer, but much quieter during the winter months, when the party hotels are mostly closed.

The sun will still be shining with temperatures up to 20 degrees in February and water temperature around 18-20 degrees.

The best beaches to visit in Cyprus are:

• Makronissos beach (in the picture)
• the world-famous Nissi Beach. Here you’ll find golden sand beaches with various shades of crystal clear azure water. The snorkeling is fantastic and you could even go diving and explore some nearby shipwrecks as well.

The best way to get around Cyprus is by renting a car. In addition to sunbathing and swimming, you could also drive up the mountains of Cyprus (there are some great hiking trails up there) or visit the capital Nicosia which is split into two parts between the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Just 30 minutes by car, there is also the historical port town of Larnaca where you can find lots of charming restaurants, old buildings, and a nice beach boulevard.

In Ayia Napa, there is also many restaurants and hotels to choose from, and a lovely marina where you can go for a stroll in the evening.

In the outskirts of the town, you can also visit the Love Bridge which is a natural arch bridge with crystal clear azure blue water as well.

Albufeira, Portugal – one of the hottest places in Europe in February

Albufeira is located in the beautiful Algarve region in southern Portugal and is a wonderful destination to get some much needed sunshine during Europe’s cold winter months.  

The southern Portuguese coast is one of the best places to visit in Europe in February to see beautiful coastline, rugged cliffs, and the wild Atlantic ocean, especially if you’re campervanning in Portugal.

Walking around Albufeira during the winter is very pleasant as temperatures are typically 14-16c (low 60’sf). Though it can get chilly and windy by the ocean, it’s a beautiful place to visit in the winter.

Albufeira’s location on the Algarve is perfect for seeing the region. Located in the middle of the Algarve, there are numerous things to do in Albufeira in summer or winter, though in the winter the ocean will be quite a bit chillier. 

Albufeira has a lively atmosphere, where the main road, also known as The Strip has numerous shops and restaurants leading down to the Praia Oura.  

Cafes, bars, restaurants and shops are one of the main draws of this area, and provide tourists with ample opportunities to purchase some great Portuguese gifts, including the option to purchase real cork from the cork forest in Portugal. 

The city also has great restaurants and trying traditional Portuguese food is a must such as xerem or seafood as it will be fresh.

After eating at any of Albufeira’s hundreds of restaurants, take a stroll to the galleria Corte -Real which sells contemporary art.

Other places in mainland Europe which are warm(ish) in February include southern Italy, the French Riviera (mediterranean coast of France and Monaco) and Spain (near Malaga and Gibraltar.)

If you love music—especially reggae—there’s no better way to celebrate this Valentine’s Day than by seeing the new biopic Bob Marley: One Love , which hits theaters on February 14. Well, there may be one better way: planning a reggae-themed pilgrimage to Jamaica.

Marley was born in the town of Nine Mile , about two hours outside of Kingston , and today, you can visit both his birthplace and the spot where he was buried . But there are also plenty of spots right in the capital where you can embrace his spirit of peace, love, and liberation. Be sure to tour the Bob Marley Museum , which occupies the 19th-century British colonial–style home he purchased in 1975; the Trench Town Culture Yard , the public housing area that’s considered the birthplace of reggae and rocksteady music; and Tuff Gong , the recording studio where Marley cut some of his most iconic albums.

Odds are your travels may have taken you through Orlando or Miami in the past, but there are plenty of new reasons to explore underrated Tampa , which is in the midst of a major hotel boom. But if you come in February, you’ll be rewarded with crisp, pitch-black nights that are perfect for viewing the northern lights. Your chances of catching the dazzling nocturnal display are incredible, as Churchill sees an average of 300 nights of aurora activity throughout the year.

February means summertime in Australia, but that warmer weather won’t stop you from hanging out with penguins. Located about 90 minutes from Melbourne, Phillip Island is home to the world’s largest colony of little penguins (yes, that is their official name), which stand around a foot tall. Every night at sunset, in a display lovingly called the Penguin Parade , they waddle ashore to return to their burrows, often by the thousands. Pro tip: Pay a bit extra for a spot in an underground viewing hide to see the penguins scoot by at eye level.

Schweitzer, Idaho

For crowd-hating ski bums.

Average temp: 29ºF high, 18ºF low

Idaho’s Sun Valley rightfully enjoys a reputation as one of America’s top ski destinations —with the crowds to match. If you want unbelievable terrain without waiting in a queue at the lift, head way north into the Idaho Panhandle and its jagged Selkirk Mountains to the state’s largest ski resort, Schweitzer , which remains underrated despite its impressive 2,900 skiable acres. (While the resort has a family-friendly reputation, know that the terrain in these parts skews decidedly intermediate-to-expert.) From up here, about 11 miles north of Sandpoint , you’ll have 360-degree views out over Montana, Washington, and even across the border into Canada.

Yes, it’ll be crowded, but if you want to see the city at its most festive, visit during the February festival season. Lunar New Year falls on February 10, kicking off the Year of the Dragon with a massive night parade that fills the streets of Tsim Sha Tsui with floats and live performers. The new year also brings with it an array of foods that are eaten for luck and prosperity, including whole fish, tangerines, fat choi (black moss), tang yuan (filled glutinous rice balls), and yau gok (fried dumplings). You could stay in the capital all of February and never run out of ways to celebrate Black History Month. Todos Santos, Mexico

The first town in Baja California Sur to be named one of Mexico’s Pueblo Mágicos (a designation indicating cultural and historical interest with superb hospitality), this laid-back fishing village has been attracting creative types for decades. In 2021, it welcomed the intimate and luxurious Paradero Todos Santos resort , where guests can learn how to farm or cook, go on morning hikes or bike rides, or book a surf or yoga session. But from November to March, the best way to experience the region is on one of Paradero’s ocean safaris, which take advantage of the town’s location on the Pacific whale migration superhighway; out on the water, you might see humpback whales, gray whales, sea lions, dolphins, and manta rays. ( Todos Santos Eco Adventures and Explora Baja also offer well-recommended tours.) Back in town, February means the Todos Santos Open Studio Tour, when more than 50 artists will open up their workspaces for art lovers.

February brings sunny weather to the Peruvian coast, making it a perfectly pleasant time to visit the capital. But the season also comes with an added bonus: Many locals take advantage of that heat by heading out of town to beach resorts, often leaving Lima a bit emptier than usual. A restaurant offering a hot wings challenge makes daring competitors sign a waiver before they begin — in case of “loss of life”.

Wing Kingz in Canterbury, Kent in the UK runs an ‘Earn Your Wingz’ endurance test in which challengers take on 15 chicken wings coated in a Carolina Reaper sauce. 

If participants can polish off all 15 wings in just ten minutes and then endure a five-minute ‘burn time’ upon completion, they get their meal for free and their name added to a Hall of Fame wall in the restaurant. 

But the adults-only task isn’t for the faint-hearted — with those taking on the challenge asked to sign a waiver form before beginning. 

The second point on the form reads: “I acknowledge that I will be engaging in the Earn Your Wingz Challenge, whereby there may be a risk of personal injury, illness or possible loss of life and damage to or loss of personal property.”

Another point on the waiver reads: “I agree that I am participating in the Earn Your Wingz Challenge at my own risk, and I accept that Wing Kingz, its employees or affiliates will not be held responsible for any consequences that may result from my participation.”

The Carolina Reaper, a gnarled red pepper developed by American breeder Ed Currie, measures up to 2.2 million Scoville heat units — around 200 times hotter than a garden variety jalapeño. 

It was considered the hottest pepper in the world from 2013 up until last year, when it was surpassed by another developed by Currie called Pepper X. \

Hot Oceans Worsened Dubai’s Dramatic Flooding, Scientists Say

An international team of researchers found that heavy rains had intensified in the region, though they couldn’t say for sure how much climate change was responsible.

Scenes of flood-ravaged neighborhoods in one of the planet’s driest regions stunned the world this month. Heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates and Oman submerged cars, clogged highways and killed at least 21 people. Flights out of Dubai’s airport, a major global hub, were severely disrupted.

The downpours weren’t a total surprise — forecasters had anticipated the storms several days earlier and issued warnings. But they were certainly unusual.

Here’s what to know.

Heavy rain there is rare, but not unheard-of.

On average, the Arabian Peninsula receives a scant few inches of rain a year, although scientists have found that a sizable chunk of that precipitation falls in infrequent but severe bursts, not as periodic showers. These rains often come during El Niño conditions like the ones the world is experiencing now.

U.A.E. officials said the 24-hour rain total on April 16 was the country’s largest since records there began in 1949 . And parts of the nation had already experienced an earlier round of thunderstorms in March.

Oman, with its coastline on the Arabian Sea, is also vulnerable to tropical cyclones. Past storms there have brought torrential rain, powerful winds and mudslides, causing extensive damage.

Global warming is projected to intensify downpours.

Stronger storms are a key consequence of human-caused global warming. As the atmosphere gets hotter, it can hold more moisture, which can eventually make its way down to the earth as rain or snow.

But that doesn’t mean rainfall patterns are changing in precisely the same way across every part of the globe.

In their latest assessment of climate research , scientists convened by the United Nations found there wasn’t enough data to have firm conclusions about rainfall trends in the Arabian Peninsula and how climate change was affecting them. The researchers said, however, that if global warming were to be allowed to continue worsening in the coming decades, extreme downpours in the region would quite likely become more intense and more frequent.

Hot oceans are a big factor.

An international team of scientists has made a first attempt at estimating the extent to which climate change may have contributed to April’s storms. The researchers didn’t manage to pin down the connection precisely, though in their analysis, they did highlight one known driver of heavy rain in the region: above-normal ocean temperatures.

Large parts of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans have been hotter than usual recently, in part because of El Niño and other natural weather cycles, and in part because of human-induced warming .

When looking only at El Niño years, the scientists estimated that storm events as infrequent as this month’s delivered 10 percent to 40 percent more rain to the region than they would in a world that hadn’t been warmed by human activities. They cautioned, however, that these estimates were highly uncertain.

“Rainfall, in general, is getting more extreme,” said Mansour Almazroui, a climate scientist at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and one of the researchers who contributed to the analysis.

The analysis was conducted by scientists affiliated with World Weather Attribution, a research collaboration that studies extreme weather events shortly after they occur. Their findings about this month’s rains haven’t yet been peer reviewed, but are based on standardized methods .

The role of cloud seeding isn’t clear.

The U.A.E. has for decades worked to increase rainfall and boost water supplies by seeding clouds. Essentially, this involves shooting particles into clouds to encourage the moisture to gather into larger, heavier droplets, ones that are more likely to fall as rain or snow.

Cloud seeding and other rain-enhancement methods have been tried around the world, including in Australia, China, India, Israel, South Africa and the United States. Studies have found that these operations can, at best, affect precipitation modestly — enough to turn a downpour into a bigger downpour, but probably not a drizzle into a deluge.

Still, experts said pinning down how much seeding might have contributed to this month’s storms would require detailed study.

“In general, it is quite a challenge to assess the impact of seeding,” said Luca Delle Monache, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. Dr. Delle Monache has been leading efforts to use artificial intelligence to improve the U.A.E.’s rain-enhancement program.

An official with the U.A.E.’s National Center of Meteorology, Omar Al Yazeedi, told news outlets that the agency didn’t conduct any seeding during the latest storms. His statements didn’t make clear, however, whether that was also true in the hours or days before.

Mr. Al Yazeedi didn’t respond to emailed questions from The New York Times, and Adel Kamal, a spokesman for the center, didn’t have further comment.

Cities in dry places just aren’t designed for floods.

Wherever it happens, flooding isn’t just a matter of how much rain comes down. It’s also about what happens to all that water once it’s on the ground — most critically, in the places people live.

Cities in arid regions often aren’t designed to drain very effectively. In these areas, paved surfaces block rain from seeping into the earth below, forcing it into drainage systems that can easily become overwhelmed.

One recent study of Sharjah , the capital of the third-largest emirate in the U.A.E., found that the city’s rapid growth over the past half-century had made it vulnerable to flooding at far lower levels of rain than before.

Visitor numbers start to ramp up this month, but it's still early enough in the season that you're unlikely to have to jostle for a view at the popular Bryce Point, which overlooks Bryce Amphitheater, a landscape of otherworldly rock spires (called hoodoos).

This Portuguese island chain in the Atlantic Ocean offers a little bit of everything for active travelers, from geoparks and waterfall hikes to paragliding. Though the weather here is always a bit unpredictable, the chances of wind and rain are lower in May. The water temperature also begins to warm up for must-do activities like snorkeling or swimming with dolphins, and with fewer swells than the winter months, beginner surfers will feel more comfortable trying to hang ten. As an added bonus, the biggest festival in the Azores – the Feasts of Santo Cristo dos Milagres – typically occurs in May.

Travelers looking for a vacation filled with unique and heart-pumping activities should set their sights on Cappadocia. This mountainous region in central Turkey is home to a UNESCO-listed national park, centuries-old underground cities, ancient cave dwellings, magnificent rock formations and more. Plus, thanks to average temperatures in the 60s and 70s in May, activities like soaring high above the Göreme Valley on a hot air balloon tour and driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle past fairy chimneys couldn't be more pleasant.

As one of the warmest and driest times of year in Palawan, May welcomes travelers with open arms. Take advantage of the minimal rainfall by experiencing all of the outdoor activities and attractions that this Philippine island has to offer –spoiler alert, there are a lot. Spend time relaxing on Palawan's white sand beaches, island-hopping or even swimming with gentle whale sharks. Water sports are popular in this destination as well, from diving Tubbataha Reef to kayaking El Nido's Big Lagoon.  

Visiting Granada, Spain, in May is a no-brainer. Average temperatures in the mid-70s, blooming flower displays (at Generalife Gardens) and a full roster of events make this Andalusian city a must-visit in the spring. Día de la Cruz and Feria del Corpus Christi, two of the city's most popular celebrations, are both held in May, and travelers won't want to miss seeing Granada come alive with music, flamenco dancers and more. Save time during your trip for a guided tour of the Alhambra and strolling through the Albaicín neighborhood.

May falls within this Peruvian city's winter season, though you probably wouldn't notice thanks to its consistently mild temperatures (highs hover in the 60s). This month rarely sees rain showers, and you'll encounter fewer tourists at archaeological wonders like La Catedral – which sits in the restaurant- and coffee shop-filled Plaza de Armas – and Machu Picchu – a bucket list destination and UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 50 miles northwest of Cusco. If you're up for a challenge, hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. This difficult trek through the area's towering mountains takes about four days to complete.

With 33 beaches, this eastern Caribbean island is a sun worshipper's dream, and May temperatures in the upper 70s and 80s are perfect for basking on its white sands . Spend warm days venturing to offshore cays, exploring fishing villages and watching yacht races during the Anguilla Regatta, typically held every May. Since this is the start of the island's rainy season, the weather can be wetter and more humid than the winter months, but visitors will be rewarded with cheaper accommodations. 

May is a great time for a trip to this seaside Spanish city before the heat and humidity become unbearable. Can't-miss architectural marvels to check out include Antoni Gaudí's whimsical Park Güell and the Gothic-style Sagrada Família. Budget time for visiting some of Barcelona's highly regarded museums, such as the Picasso Museum, and relax at Barceloneta beach before stopping at a nearby seafood restaurant for some of the best paella in the city. What's more, the city plays host to a number of events come May, including film and music festivals

Craggy coastline views, a world-famous aquarium and a superb farm-to-table dining scene draw tourists of all types to Monterey, California. Though temperatures here remain in the 60s for most of the year, rainfall drops significantly in May. Popular festivals also make this a great time of the year to visit. Come early in the month for the Pacific Grove Good Old Days Street Festival, which showcases local artisans and craft vendors, plus a variety of food booths. And near the end of the month, the three-day California Roots Music & Arts Festival celebrates reggae artists.

Visit Laguna Beach for a perfect sunny-and-70, laid-back beach vacation. May is part of this Southern California town's spring shoulder season, so you'll find fewer people on popular stretches of sand like Main Beach and Crescent Bay Beach. Plus, the quieter month is ideal for relaxation-focused activities, such as outdoor yoga and hiking. When travelers need a break from reconnecting with themselves or nature, they can check out Laguna Beach's thriving art scene, which includes hundreds of galleries, studios and public works of art.

Bright turquoise water, gorgeous white sand and lush green vegetation await vacationers in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Composed of 32 islands and cays, this Caribbean archipelago is perfect for a tropical getaway. May falls between the country's peak winter season and its hurricane-prone low season, making it an ideal time for scuba diving and snorkeling in the Tobago Cays Marine Park, swimming and soaking up some rays at Canouan's beaches and hiking to beautiful waterfalls like Dark View Falls. Travelers will also want to check out the country's 20-acre Botanical Gardens, the oldest available in the Western Hemisphere.

Victoria, British Columbia's capital city, sits on the southern portion of Vancouver Island. Not only does this Canadian destination boast comfortable highs in the low 60s in May, it is just a short ferry ride from Seattle (less than three hours), making it perfect for a quick weekend getaway . Spend your visit strolling through the 55-acre Butchart Gardens, which are bursting with colorful tulips and cherry blossoms come May, then get out on the water on a whale watching tour. Before heading home, don't forget to shop for souvenirs along Government Street.

Considered the birthplace of democracy and drama, Athens boasts a historical legacy that is hard to top. The main reason to visit is to see the ancient city's impressive ruins, which you'll find at the Acropolis and Ancient Agora. For an additional look at Athens' past, check out the incredible Greek artifacts on display at the National Archaeological Museum and the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture. May vacations are especially enjoyable thanks to comfortable daytime temps hovering in the mid-70s.

By late May, most of Yellowstone's trails and must-see attractions are open, welcoming eager nature enthusiasts seeking a breath of fresh air. The average 50-degree temperatures provide a brisk but comfortable atmosphere for a hike on one of the Old Faithful area's trails or a kayaking excursion on Yellowstone Lake. For a glimpse of wildlife, head to Lamar Valley to view wolf pups emerging from their dens. Keep in mind that if you visit during Memorial Day weekend, you'll likely run into crowds.

With warm weather year-round (average temperatures sit in the 80s), there's never a bad time to visit Singapore. But in May, this Asian city-state on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula welcomes events such as the Singapore Cocktail Festival, the Singapore International Festival of Arts and the Singapore HeritageFest. When you're not enjoying your time at one of Singapore's cultural events, check out top attractions like Gardens by the Bay, a futuristic nature park that is home to the Supertree Observatory and the Cloud Forest.
