Holland America Line Opens Bookings for 2025-2026 Panama Canal and Hawaii Cruises

Cruises include new ports, myriad ways to transit the Panama Canal, plus Nieuw Amsterdam’s Hawaii debut

Seattle, Wash., March 4, 2024 — Holland America Line has opened bookings for 2025-2026 Panama Canal and Hawaii cruises. The premium cruise line, known for longer and destination-focused voyages, will offer departures from five North American homeports , sailing on five ships.

This season of six different Panama Canal cruises includes several firsts: Holland America Line has added the port of Acajutla, El Salvador, on most Panama Canal sailings. Additionally, guests can sail aboard Pinnacle-Class ship Koningsdam as she makes the transit through the canal for the first time. And for those hoping to transit the canal aboard Zuiderdam, new this season are departures from Miami . Voyages span from 15 to 22 days , providing options for those seeking shorter or longer vacations.

“We know a Panama Canal transit is a once-in-a-lifetime experience many of our guests are seeking, and by adding Acajutla to select voyages, we’re making it even more memorable. Guests can discover the ‘Pompeii of the Americas’ with a shore excursion to Joya de Cerén archaeological site, where they’ll explore a Mayan farming village remarkably preserved under volcanic ash,” said  Beth Bodensteiner, Holland America Line’s chief commercial officer. “With four different departure cities, there are so many different ways to experience the Panama Canal aboard one of our ships.

In Hawaii, Nieuw Amsterdam makes its debut, cruising roundtrip itineraries from San Diego, California. Panama Canal and Hawaii cruises are offered from October 2025 through April 2026 and range from 15 to 22 days.

Natural and man-made marvels feature prominently on cruises to Hawaii and the Panama Canal, with cascading waterfalls, ancient Mayan ruins and, of course, the Panama Canal’s famous locks. Shore excursions are culturally immersive to show off the natural beauty and rich history of the destinations. Cuisine on board highlights local flavors with golden pineapple, locally sourced fresh fish like Pacific mahi-mahi, fresh homemade salsa and other regional  specialties sourced directly from port to plate.

·Several cruises offer multiple embarkation or disembarkation options. For example, Fort Lauderdale to San Diego, Seattle or Vancouver.

·Select Panama Canal sailings include a call at Acajutla, a new port for Holland America Line, offering excursions to remarkably preserved Mayan ruins, volcanoes, and cacao plantations, while also providing a gateway to see more of El Salvador, including San Salvador and Nahuizalco.

·Many Panama Canal cruises include a call at Half Moon Cay, Holland America Line’s award-winning private island in the Bahamas.

Holland America Line Opens Bookings for 2025-2026 Hawaii and Panama Canal Voyages

Holland America Line is setting sail for adventure with the opening of bookings for its 2025-2026 Panama Canal and Hawaii cruises. With a focus on longer voyages and destination immersion, the premium cruise line is set to offer sailings out of five North American homeports on five separate ships for the 2025-2026 season.

For the specified season, Holland America Line is offering six different Panama Canal cruises. The upcoming season’s offering will feature several firsts, including the addition of the port of Acajutla, El Salvador on most Panama Canal itineraries and the inaugural transit of the canal by the Pinnacle-Class ship Koningsdam. For those looking to cross the canal aboard Zuiderdam, the 2025-2026 season will bring new departures from Miami .

These cruises, ranging from 15 to 22 days, provide guests with the opportunity to embark on shorter or more extended journeys, all while experiencing the wonders of the iconic Central America waterway.

"We know a Panama Canal transit is a once-in-a-lifetime experience many of our guests are seeking, and by adding Acajutla to select voyages, we're making it even more memorable. Guests can discover the 'Pompeii of the Americas' with a shore excursion to Joya de Cerén archaeological site, where they'll explore a Mayan farming village remarkably preserved under volcanic ash," said Beth Bodensteiner, Holland America Line's chief commercial officer. "With four different departure cities, there are so many different ways to experience the Panama Canal aboard one of our ships.

In addition to Panama Canal adventures, the 2025-2026 season marks the debut of Holland America Line's ship Nieuw Amsterdam in Hawaii. Sailing roundtrip itineraries from San Diego, California, Nieuw Amsterdam will be joined by Koningsdam and Zaandam in sailing island-hopping itineraries, almost all of which include an overnight in the Aloha State’s iconic capital city of Honolulu.

Holland America’s selection of Hawaii and Panama Canal cruises both range in duration from 15 to 22 days and are available from October 2025 through April 2026. Cruises to both of these colorful equatorial destinations showcase a blend of natural wonders and manmade marvels, from breathtaking cascading waterfalls and verdant tropical landscapes to ancient Mayan ruins and the world-famous locks of the Panama Canal.

Immersive shore excursions offer cultural insights into the destinations' rich heritage and natural beauty. Meanwhile, the diverse cuisine offered on board incorporates unique local flavors, including succulent Pacific mahi-mahi, sweet golden pineapple, fresh homemade salsa, and other regional specialties sourced directly from port to plate.

Highlights of the 2025-2026 Panama Canal Cruise Season:

  • Panama Canal cruises are aboard Eurodam, Koningsdam and Zuiderdam.
  • Cruises start or end in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; Seattle, Washington; San Diego, California; or Miami or Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
  • Guests enjoy a daylight transit of the Panama Canal, with commentary on the open decks detailing the amazing feat of the man-made marvel.
  • Itineraries range from 15 to 22 days and include a combination of calls in Aruba, California, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama and Turks and Caicos.
  • Several cruises offer multiple embarkation or disembarkation options. For example, Fort Lauderdale to San Diego, Seattle or Vancouver.
  • Select Panama Canal sailings include a call at Acajutla, a new port for Holland America Line, offering excursions to remarkably preserved Mayan ruins, volcanoes, and cacao plantations, while also providing a gateway to see more of El Salvador, including San Salvador and Nahuizalco.
  • Many Panama Canal cruises include a call at Half Moon Cay, Holland America Line's award-winning private island in the Bahamas.

Highlights of the 2025-2026 Hawaii Cruise Season:

  • Cruises to Hawaii are aboard Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam and Zaandam. This will be Nieuw Amsterdam's first season in Hawaii.
  • Itineraries are roundtrip from San Diego, roundtrip from Vancouver, or from Vancouver to San Diego.
  • 17-day "Circle Hawaii" from Vancouver to San Diego visits Nawiliwili, Kahului, Hilo, Honolulu (overnight) and Kona. The 17-day roundtrip from San Diego features either an overnight or late departure from Honolulu, a call to Ensenada, Mexico, and more Hawaiian ports like Kona and Kahului.
  • 18-day "Circle Hawaii" is roundtrip from San Diego or Vancouver and calls at Kahului, Hilo, Honolulu (overnight), Nawiliwili and Kona. Roundtrip San Diego adds a call at Ensenada and roundtrip Vancouver includes Victoria, Canada.

For a limited time, guests who choose to add the ‘Have It All’ premium package—the line’s standard package of amenities, such as shore excursions, specialty dining, a Signature Beverage Package, Surf Wi-Fi and free prepaid Crew Appreciation—when booking select Panama Canal and Hawaii voyages will receive free upgrades to the Elite Beverage Package and Premium Wi-Fi.

How to Take an Amtrak Train to Cruise Ports Across the USA

By: Sherry Laskin · Updated On: February 19, 2024

Did you know you can take an Amtrak train to cruise ports throughout the US? Most of us don’t live near a cruise port so choices on how to get to your ship are limited. Basically, fly or drive.

Some people (like me!) simply refuse to fly, and that seriously limits travel options to a cruise port. There is a better, relaxed and fun way to begin your cruise vacation:  take an Amtrak train to your cruise port!

Me Aboard Amtrak Train to Cruise Port

How to Take an Amtrak Train to Your Cruise Port

Amtrak is America’s passenger train. Unlike a busy airport, you can arrive at an Amtrak station 45 minutes before your train is scheduled to depart. Check your baggage and wait to hear the station attendant announce the famous “All Aboard.”

After the train car attendant helps you step onboard, you’ll nestle into your sleeping compartment or reclining wide seat. When was the last time that happened on an airplane?

READ MORE: 29 Best Tips for an Amtrak Overnight Train

There are over 500 Amtrak stations in 46 states and Washington, D.C, so there’s bound to be an Amtrak train to get to your cruise ship’s homeport.

Ready to take an Amtrak train to your cruise port? I’ve listed all cruise ports by state and the Amtrak trains to get you there.

Take Amtrak to Florida Cruise Ports

There are two daily overnight trains , operating two different routes running between Boston, New York City and Washington DC, all the way to Miami. Note: as of May 19, 2022, there is only one train running daily between Miami and New York City, the Silver Star. The Silver Meteor is on temporary suspension until September 11, 2022, due to staffing shortage issues.

How to Take Amtrak to Cruise Ports in the USA in a roomette

The current Amtrak train to Florida, the Silver Star, follows much the same route as the Silver Meteor for most of the journey between New York and Miami. The Silver Star includes stops in Jacksonville, Orlando, Winter Park and Miami for cruise ports at Jacksonville, Port Canaveral, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami .

Currently, a section of the Silver Star will veer west from Lakeland to service Tampa and the cruise port. Then continues southbound to Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Upon arrival at any of the south Florida Amtrak stations, it’s a short taxi ride to the port. But you’ll need to spend an overnight at a hotel because the trains arrive in the late afternoon. But you might do that anyway if you flew to the port.

If you’re cruising from Port Canaveral, I suggest that you plan to depart the train in quaint Winter Park rather than busy Orlando or Kissimmee. At either train stations, you can arrange a car rental or pre-book a shuttle service. It’s an easy, 1-hour drive to Port Canaveral from Winter Park or a local area hotel in Cape Canaveral or Cocoa Beach.

Los Angeles Area Cruise Ports on Amtrak

Long beach and san pedro cruise ports.

Just because you live hundreds or even thousands of miles from the cruise ports in Los Angeles, doesn’t mean spending hours in the sky to get there.

Amtrak operates four almost-transcontinental trains from the east coast, Midwest and southern states as well as an overnight train from Washington state.

Connect in Chicago for a scenic ride aboard the Southwest Chief to Los Angeles, CA

Your overland coast-to-coast journey begins in New York City or Washington DC. Both cities have three overnight trains to Chicago. The next day, westbound from Chicago, there are two trains going directly to Los Angeles; the Texas Eagle via San Antonio in almost three days (due to a long layover in San Antonio, but you’re asleep in your compartment) and the Southwest Chief, a much shorter trip of around 43 hours. The scenery is amazing on both trains.

You can take the California Zephyr from Chicago to Los Angeles but it’s not a direct train. You have to change in Sacramento and then continue on to L.A.

My suggestion? Take the train with the most breathtaking scenery, the California Zephyr, to Sacramento, stay over a couple of nights to have time to visit the incredible California State Railway Museum. You can then catch the historic Coast Starlight at 6:30am and arrive in Los Angeles at 9pm. There are two hotels in a 10-minute walking distance to the train station.

Arrival into the splendidly restored Los Angeles Union Station is an experience in itself. Taxis are available just outside the station.

Take Amtrak for Cruises from New Orleans, Galveston/Houston

Whether you live on the west coast, east coast or the Midwest, you can easily get to the Port of New Orleans and the Texas ports at Houston (Pasadena) and Galveston .

The Sunset Limited, originating in New Orleans and Los Angeles, departs three days a week in either direction. Cruisers from the west coast can depart their train in Houston or New Orleans.

Leaving from Chicago, passengers board the famous City of New Orleans train for a quick overnight ride down to the Big Easy. From there, cruise ships head out to the Caribbean and twice a year Transatlantic crossings to Europe.

New York is the departure point for the Crescent, en route to New Orleans via Philadelphia, Washington DC and Atlanta. Heading to Houston, transfer in New Orleans to the Sunset Limited for a short 9-hour train ride. From Houston, Amtrak provides a dedicated motor coach to Galveston.

All Aboard Amtrak for a  Mississippi River Cruise

Choose an Amtrak train to cruise ports in New Orleans for a Mississippi River cruise or head out to the sunny Caribbean.

Cruise from the Port of New Orleans aboard an authentic paddle wheeler and step back in time on a northbound Mississippi River cruise. Or leave from Chicago aboard the Empire Builder to St. Paul, MN and begin a southbound cruise on the Mississippi. Memphis or St. Louis, too.

Amtrak to Cruise Ports in Seattle and Vancouver

Travel from New York to Chicago and transfer to the Empire Builder to Seattle on one of the most scenic Amtrak train rides in America. Once the train gets to the western side of Montana, the Empire Builder travels straight through Glacier National Park.

There’s even a train stop at one of the National Park Lodges, where you could spend a day or two pre- or post-cruise.

From the Port of Seattle, train passengers can choose either a round-trip 7-night Inside Passage Alaska cruise or a one-way cruise to Anchorage to explore more of the Last Frontier.

Seattle Amtrak Union Station

To take Amtrak to Vancouver for your Alaska cruise, you’ll transfer in Seattle to the Amtrak Cascades train and cross the Canadian border via the train. Because of staffing issues related to the pandemic, the Cascades is on temporary hold through the end of 2022.

Instead, Amtrak has a dedicated motor coach that takes passengers to the Vancouver Union Station. From there, it’s a short taxi ride to downtown Vancouver hotels and the nearby Port of Vancouver.

Those who depart from Seattle for a longer cruise to Asia, Hawaii or even Australia will love Amtrak’s generous luggage regulations. Each person is allowed to carry on 2 bags up to 28” tall and up to 50lbs. Passengers may also check up to 2 bags for free, same height and weight restrictions and 2 additional bags at $20/each. That’s a lot of luggage.

Southern Californians can hop aboard the historic Coast Starlight for an overnight ride to Seattle. Hugging the Pacific Coast for several hours before ascending the Sierra Nevada range, the scenery is spectacular. Not to mention the private lounge and dining car for first-class passengers.

Tips For Taking Amtrak to a Cruise Port

  • ALWAYS arrive the day before, just as you should if you’re flying to your ship.
  • If you’re traveling in coach, bring a light travel blanket and small pillow.
  • First class sleeping compartments include bottled water, juice, sodas, and all meals in the dining car so you don’t need to pack a picnic. Plus, you can always purchase something extra to eat from the Café Car.
  • Rates for sleepers increase as supply decreases. Book your accommodations early. If your plans change, new cancellation penalties allow for some flexibility.
  • Purchase travel insurance that covers missed connections, just in case of a severe delay or if you need to cancel for covered reasons.
  • Print out your timetable from Amtrak’s website.
  • An Amtrak train ride to your embarkation port may not be the solution for everyone, especially for those that are on a time constraint. For people who live in South Dakota, Wyoming or much of Idaho, this probably isn’t an option, either, as there is no train service to these areas.

But for most of us across America, there is an Amtrak station no more than a half-day’s drive away. Let your vacation begin before the cruise; take Amtrak to your cruise port and arrive refreshed, relaxed and ready for another adventure.

Hi Don, Thanks for going in to a little more detail about LA Union Station and reaching Long Beach and San Pedro. San Diego would be a great choice, too.

' src=

June 5, 2015 at 7:34 pm

Wanted to mention San Diego because more ships are using it as an embarkation point.

Amtrak has 12 trains a day from LA Union Station to San Diego, where trains arrive convenient to all the downtown hotels and the harbor.

June 5, 2015 at 7:31 pm

So sorry you spent that $100. Amtrak offers connecting bus service from LA Union Station to Long Beach (where most hotels are) and San Pedro, which must be booked in conjunction with your rail reservation (by California law).

Because this service does not meet every train, you may have to wait awhile. However, Union Station has a Metropolitan Lounge for Amtrak sleeping car passengers, where you can relax.

Although I haven’t stored luggage at this location, the Metro Lounge in Chicago routinely does so.

If true in LA, that gives you a chance to hop on the Red Line subway from within Union Station to its Hollywood and Vine stop. There within the same block, you’ll find the Kodak Theatre (the current Academy Awards venue), the famed Chinese Theatre (the former Academy Awards venue), and the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, where Marilyn Monroe lived. This hotel’s fun to explore.

To add to Richard’s comment: In March we took a fantastic train trip around the U.S., more than 8200 miles and loved it. My wife had the brilliant idea to break up that trip with a short cruise from LA, giving us a very welcome change in food and scenery. Our biggest problem was the connection between Amtrak and the port of San Pedro. Cabs were $100+ each way, and we didn’t find many other options. We used the local subway, taking the red line to the blue line, out to San Pedro, and a cab from there to the port, $20 or so. But it was a bit of an adventure, and a tough job to lug our suitcases along. We had a wonderful subway journey, getting into a discussion of our trip with some wonderful locals, but many people might find the task daunting. I highly recommend the journey, but realize that the connection is either difficult or costly.

Hi Richard, Thanks for writing. I did the train trip into Union Station twice in 2013 for a Princess cruise. Since I always arrive the day before the cruise, I took a shared shuttle for $17 from Union Station to the Marriott Airport Hotel. The next morning, because this hotel was one of the hotels that Princess Cruises used for their pre/post cruise stay, I bought a transfer to the San Pedro port through the cruise line. Also, PrimeTimeShuttle.com provides direct service between Union Station and both San Pedro and Long Beach ports for a flat fee. As you said, taking a private taxi can be expensive. Thank you for your comment.

Los Angeles ports: traveling from Los Angeles union station to the ports of Los Angeles will not be an easy breeze. The taxi will cost you another $100 (including tip) plus the horrible traffic and 2 hour travel. Taking another train from union station to the ports will be difficult, another long trip, change carriage, the need to take taxi to the nearest ports as there are no direct trains drop off. 🙁

THE CARIBBEAN

During Norwegian Viva's winter season, the vessel will offer guests seven-day roundtrip Western Caribbean itineraries to Cozumel, and Costa Maya, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; as well as Harvest Caye, NCL's resort-style destination located in Southern Belize. On Jan. 10 and Jan. 24, 2026, Norwegian Viva will sail a 14-day Eastern Caribbean itinerary for cruisers searching for a longer warm-weather escape. The voyages will visit George Town, Cayman Islands - a first-time visit for the ship - and call to NCL's private island - Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas; Road Town (Tortola), British Virgin Islands; St. John's (Antigua), Antigua; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; and Cozumel, Mexico.

Between November 2025 and April 2026, Norwegian Escape will homeport in New Orleans – the first Breakaway-Plus class ship to homeport in this bustling city – offering a series of seven-day roundtrip Western Caribbean voyages. For a similar and extended itinerary option, the ship will also offer two 14-day Southern Caribbean cruises on Feb. 1, and Feb. 22, 2026, where the ship will visit for the first time Puerto Limon, Costa Rica; Colon, Panama; and Cartagena, Colombia.

Homeporting for a second season in La Romana, Dominican Republic, Norwegian Sky is offering travelers a selection of seven, nine and 12-day roundtrip Southern Caribbean itineraries from December 2025 through April 2026 calling to a variety of picturesque ports including Oranjestad, Aruba; Kralendijk, Bonaire; Willemstad, Curaçao of the ABC islands and more. During the Jan. 5, 2026, nine-day sailing, Norwegian Sky will cruise to the southwestern coast of the Dominican Republic to make her debut in Cabo Rojo, offering guests a beautiful beach escape. These Caribbean cruises provide travelers worldwide the opportunity to enjoy these bucket-list destinations, as most visitors arriving to the Dominican Republic do not require a visa to enter the country.

SOUTH AMERICA

The South America itineraries begin with the transatlantic crossing from Lisbon, Portugal to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Nov. 20, 2025, visiting Portugal, Cape Verde, and several cities in Brazil. Norwegian Star will then embark on a 17-day cruise from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Dec. 4, 2025 calling to ports in Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile, and making its way to the South Pole as the vessel cruises by Paradise Bay and Elephant Island in Antarctica for guests to enjoy the views and wildlife from the comfort of their balcony or the ship's top deck before disembarking in Buenos Aires, Argentina. From Dec. 21, 2025 through Feb. 15, 2026, guest can also embark on 14-day roundtrip sailings from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to cruise by Paradise Bay and Elephant Island in Antarctica. From October 2025 through April 2026, Norwegian Jade will offer between 11 and 17-day cruises traversing the Panama Canal - a bucket list experience for many guests. The itineraries will offer a variety of embarkation and disembarkation ports including Miami; New York City; Tampa, Fla., and for the ship's first time, Callao, Peru; where guests can conveniently plan extended stays pre- or post-cruise in each destination.

The unique open-jaw 17-day Panama Canal voyage on Norwegian Jade sailing from Callao, Peru on March 11, 2026, will make its way up the west coast of South America and Central America calling to Acajutla, El Salvador; Huatulco, and Manzanillo, Mexico - for the ship's first time - and it will mark the vessel's return to the guest favorite port, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico since 2008. After 12 port visits and four days at sea, the voyage will disembark in San Diego, Calif.

Get to Know Carnival Dream

It's one thing to be fun, but it's another thing to be first. Carnival Dream was at the forefront of a recent wave of amazingly innovative and fun Carnival ships. As the genesis of the Dream class, Carnival Dream set the direction for the ships that followed in her footsteps — first Carnival Magic and then Carnival Breeze. But back to Carnival Dream: the ship itself is a unique experience with the way-fun RedFrog Rum Bar ® and the very cool BlueIguana Tequila Bar ™ . Get your appetite ready, because you're gonna need it. Carnival Dream features two dual-level dining rooms, a gourmet steakhouse and dedicated sushi spot Bonsai Sushi ™ . It's also got a full menu of our latest and greatest casual spots for a bite: BlueIguana Cantina ™ , Pizzeria del Capitano, Guy's Burger Joint ™ and Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse ™ . (That's Guy as in Guy Fieri, by the way — so you know the food's delish.) Carnival Dream also features the borderline-magical Alchemy Bar ® and Ocean Plaza, which combines tasty treats with perhaps even tastier entertainment. Entertainment options are all up and down the ship, and so is soaking-wet fun, from the heart-racing waterslide action at Carnival WaterWorks ™ to the soul-soothing Thalassotherapy pool at the Cloud 9 Spa ™ . Despite its name, Carnival Dream is definitely a reality. Can't believe it? Pinch yourself... and book your dream cruise today.

Best Cruise Deals and Discounts sorted by your dream destination

Sometimes it's all about the destination and that is certainly true of cruise destinations. The cruise port you depart from and the amazing cruise ports you visit define your experience as much as what cruise line or cruise ship you sail on. At CruiseExperts.com we understand that and have sorted these cruises by the places you'll visit on your cruise vacation. So whether it's a cruise to Alaska, a Caribbean cruise, cruises to Hawaii, a cruise to the Bahamas or Bermuda or a cruise to Mexico you'll find it easily with the help of our destination wizard. Maybe you're looking for a cruise vacation that's just a little different like a Panama Canal cruise, a Transatlantic cruise, cruises to Europe, a Tahiti cruise with a tour of the South Pacific, a down under adventure with an Australia / New Zealand cruise or even a fall foliage cruise through Canada and New England. Whatever “floats your boat” get started by selecting your dream destination on our cruise search page .

Last Minute Cruises can sometimes be the cheapest cruise deal.

Sometimes, but not always, the cheapest cruise deal is a Last Minute Cruise. You won't get a wide selection of stateroom categories or a chance to select your stateroom location but if your schedule is flexible you just might find a cheap cruise price on a last minute cruise. Last minute cruises are cruises leaving in the next 90 days. The cruise line really wants to fill those last few staterooms and sometimes will offer them at a discount cruise price in exchange for you giving up your right to a full selection of cabin categories or deck locations. CruiseExperts.com makes it easy for you to poke around and see what's available in last minute cruise deals. View our Last Minute Cruise Deals by clicking here and give it a try.
