My 2D2N KL to Hatyai Train Trip – Cost Breakdown & Tips!

' src=

Table of Contents

In November 2022, my partner and I took a short KL to Hatyai train trip and took the ETS to Hatyai from KL Sentral.

This article covers (1) how we get from KL to Hatyai via train (and van), (2) cost breakdown of our KL to Hatyai trip, and (3) general tips you can use to make the same trip 🙂

The exchange rate at the time was approximately RM12.78 to 100 baht. Here we go!

How to get from KL to Hatyai by train

Taking the ETS to Hatyai for a weekend trip is easy enough in theory:

  • Buy ETS to Hatyai train ticket (we departed from KL Sentral)
  • Book accommodation
  • Exchange MYR to THB

But, the ‘going there’ part is actually a bit more complicated, because the KL to Hatyai train actually stops at Padang Besar KTM, which is 1 hour away from Hatyai . So, you have to:

  • Figure out your train to Hatyai departures and arrivals (takes 5.5-6 hours from KL to Padang Besar KTM, the last ETS train stop)
  • Figure out how to get from Padang Besar KTM to Hatyai (takes 1 hour++; your options: van and/or train and/or taxi)
  • Make sure to budget in enough time for 4x immigration queues per return trip (for me, as short as 5 mins and as long as ~20 mins)
  • P/s – Immigration opens from 6am until 10pm (Malaysian time) and 5am until 9pm (Thai time) so if you arrive outside those hours, you’ll need to wait
  • Do all this while mentally factoring in the 1-hour time difference between Malaysia and Thailand so you don’t accidentally miss your ride!

So actually, even though Kuala Lumpur and Hatyai are near geographically, you should expect the total time needed to get from KL to Hatyai – I mean from getting out the door until arrival to your hotel in Hatyai – to take around 8-12 hours or so, depending on waiting time.

As for where to go in Hatyai and stuff, it’s not hard to find out whatever information you need when you’re there. Just ask the booth attendants, or your fellow Malaysian travellers in the train or van. Most people are friendly and helpful 🙂

My 2D2N KL to Hatyai train trip

My itinerary looked like this:

Going there – KL to Hatyai train and van

  • ETS train from KL Sentral to Padang Besar KTM – depart 10.50pm, arrive 4.18am. Cost: RM102 per person
  • Van from Padang Besar KTM to Hatyai hotel – depart 6ish am (when immigration opens; took 1.5~ hours including 2x immigration stops. Cost: RM30 per person

Coming back – Hatyai to KL via van, taxi and train

  • Van pickup from Hatyai hotel to Malaysia-side immigration – depart 12pm ish, took 2~ hours including 2x immigration stops. Cost: RM25 per person
  • Taxi from Malaysia-side immigration to Padang Besar KTM. Cost: RM15 for 10 mins ride :/
  • ETS train from Padang Besar KTM to KL Sentral – depart 3.50pm, arrive by 9.30pm. Cost: RM76 per person

But this was my itinerary, not yours. Your train timing might be different, so decide based on that. Here are all the links you need to plan your trip:

  • KL Sentral to Padang Besar ETS – https://online.ktmb.com.my/
  • [Option 1] Padang Besar to Hatyai – via train (only runs 2x a day);
  • [Option 2] Padang Besar to Hatyai – via van (runs during immigration hours – will depart when van is full)

You can book the van from booth at Padang Besar KTM, it looks like this. When I asked around, apparently the price used to be RM20-25, but apparently it has increased to RM30.

Hatyai Makan Trip = Success!

My Hatyai trip was just a weekend trip and I had only one goal: to eat as much delicious Thai food as possible. Happily, I achieved that goal 🙂 Here are some pictures of the food we had on the trip (scroll for more pics).

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Suraya Zainudin (@surayaror)

You can’t go wrong if you hit these places:

  • ASEAN Night Bazaar (or any of the other night bazaars)
  • Khlong Hae Floating Market
  • Central Festival Mall (yes, the mall. Don’t knock it, the food court area is AWESOME)
  • Order from Grab Delivery (for Muslims, you can search by Halal)

I am happy to report that the food is CHEAP and GOOD. At most places, the range is between 40-70 baht per dish – RM5 to RM9. The seafood sets I saw cost 100-200 baht – RM13-26 per head. Unless you only eat at fancy places, I think you can eat well on around RM50 budget per person per day.

My 2D2N KL to Hatyai train trip: total cost

For 2 pax, we spent:

  • RM358 on return ETS train from KL Sentral to Padang Besar
  • RM125 to get from Padang Besar to Hatyai Hotel (Van + taxi)
  • RM228.80 on 2 nights accommodation at hotel
  • Around 1700 baht or ~RM220 on 2 days of food
  • Around 300 baht or ~RM40 on shopping (mostly I bought Thai cooking paste because it’s not bulky and much cheaper there than here!)

Total: RM971 for 2 pax. I could make it cheaper if:

  • Took the classic train from Padang Besar to Hatyai (60 baht or approx RM7.70 instead of RM30 per way)
  • Only book 1 night accommodation instead of 2
  • Book cheaper accommodation (you can get a pretty okay place for RM60-RM80 per night)

If I did all these, it would bring my trip cost down to approx RM750 or so but no regrets, we had a good time 🙂

General tips for your own KL to Hatyai train trip

Here are some things you might want to keep in mind for your own KL to Hatyai train trip:

1) Plan around train times and immigration opening hours . If you don’t, you might waste time just waiting

2) The Padang Besar to Hatyai classic train is cheaper than van (60 baht vs RM30). I actually wanted to take this option instead of the van, but the timing didn’t work for us. If I took that, I would need to wait at Padang Besar for 5 hours instead of 2 hours.

3) Bring an umbrella in case it rains (we almost got soaked while dropped at immigration)

4) Unless you can sleep anywhere, I wouldn’t recommend taking the overnight ETS. I couldn’t sleep at all on my train from KL to Hatyai – fellow passengers were noisy and the lights were bright. But up to you.

5) If you arrive at Hatyai hotel super early and before check-in time, say 8am or so, I would recommend booking the night before so you can check in immediately upon arrival to rest. This added RM100+ to my cost but was the best decision I made the whole trip!

P/s – Don’t forget to activate Shopback when you book from Booking.com or Agoda, might as well earn cashback

hatyai trip ktm

6) Recommended to pack light as stairs/infrastructure are not in the best condition and you might struggle with heavy luggage

7) You can buy Thai sim card at Padang Besar KTM, but I just bought day passes from Yoodo – just RM5 per day (or RM13 for 3 days)*. I know other telcos charge waaaay more than that

*Note: This is price for Thailand. Different countries, different prices.

8) Bring your Bigpay or Wise debit card – places like malls and 7-Eleven accept them and rates are better than credit card

Any more KL to Hatyai train trip to share?

Lots of Malaysians have made the same KL to Hatyai train trip, some multiple times, so I’m sure you have more tips than I do 🙂 What advice and tips would you give to someone wanting to make the same train to Hatyai from KL trip? Share with us in the comments!

Van from KTM charge around RM30 and send straight to your hotel in Hatyai.

Then otw back, from your hotel in Hatyai, take grab to Hatyai bus terminal, and van from there charge around 600baht to Thai immi.

If you’re the kind who travel light, you can hitch on motorbike for 100baht from Thai immi to MY immi.

hehe I love going to Hatyai. Pre-covid time, me and my colleagues would go twice or thrice a year. Cause we stay up north. 🤭

Wait are you recommending otw back to kl, grab to bus terminal then additional 600 baht to Thai immigration? That seems abit excessive? My friend solo trip and said it’s around 300 baht from his hotel to Thai immigration tho

Here’s all you need to know about the train schedule, including fares for 2024:

Train ride view - MySawasdee train ride

Offering an affordable and alternate mode of transportation, particularly for those looking to travel the traditional way, this diesel locomotive train takes the electrified train route that travels from KL Sentral up to Padang Besar Railway Station , on the border of Thailand.

At the Padang Besar station, you will need to disembark with your luggage and belongings, and pass through the Malaysian and Thai immigration checkpoint – so be sure to bring along a passport. This process will usually take up to an hour, depending on the crowd and the season you’re travelling.

Paspport - MySawasdee train ride

From Padang Besar Railway Station, passengers will then continue their journey by switching to a Thai locomotive , which ferries them all the way to Hat Yai. The carriages, however, remain the same.

Platform - MySawasdee train ride

While the journey may sound long as opposed to taking a flight, passengers can choose to lounge in the sleeper carriage and stretch out their legs. Each berth comes equipped with a comfortable bed and a privacy curtain that can be pulled closed for a peaceful rest while travelling.

Plus, you’ll also have the pleasure of soaking in picturesque views of lush green landscapes – a unique addition exclusive to traditional land travel.

The lower berth is priced at RM119 . But  if you prefer more comfort and privacy, opt for the upper berth (RM109) next to a window that lets you soak up scenic nature views.  Those who prefer to stay upright and enjoy the classic train ride can opt for the standard carriage seats priced at RM95 , which come with generous leg space for a comfortable journey.

Seats - MySawasdee train ride

Once hunger strikes during your journey, t ake a few steps from your seat and head over to the train’s cafe where you’ll find a plethora of packed foods such as the much-loved instant noodles (RM4-6) and pre-packed fried noodles (RM8) . There’s typically a delightful assortment of snacks, such as Apollo (RM2) and Super Ring (RM2) , to keep you company during your train ride too.  AS for warm liquids, opt for a steaming cup of Teh Tarik (RM3) or Nescafe (RM3) .

If you’re planning to experience this limited-time train ride to Hat Yai, KTM just released their MySawasdee train schedule for 2024. Tickets will go on sale through KTMB’s official website , with travel and return dates as follows:

Do keep in mind that you can choose to select a one-way trip, if you’re planning a longer trip to Thailand.  Plus, you’ll also get to begin your train ride from the opposite direction by starting off at Hat Yai Junction which heads to KL Sentral Station.

Hatyai Junction - MySawasdee train ride

To purchase your tickets and get more information on departure times, you can visit KTMB’s official website here . It’s also best to stay updated on the latest routes on their Facebook page here.

With the constant rush hour traffic and never-ending jams no matter the time of day, a train ride can be a relaxing alternative that actually lets you enjoy your journey. Not only is it affordable, but it also saves you the hassle of keeping your hands glued to the steering wheel.

So if you’re planning a quick getaway during this year-end holiday, consider a visit to Hat Yai with this limited-time-only train ride that will not break the bank for an international trip to Thailand.

KTM MySawadee 1004up from KL Sentral to Hat Yai by Train

Ktm mysawadee charter train from kl sentral to hat yai.

The MySawadee 1004up is a seasonal train from  KL Sentral  to Hat Yai, operating non-stop throughout the north-south international journey, except for technical stops and at Padang Besar Railway Station for Malaysia and Thailand immigration clearance. I booked myself a return trip on the first run of this special non-stop express train on the Malaysia Day long weekend.

The MySawadee uses the train number of 1004up in Malaysia and Express 992 in Thailand.

Sentral Kuala Lumpur Railway Station (KL Sentral)

hatyai trip ktm

The MySawadee 1004up journey starts from Sentral Kuala Lumpur Railway Station (KL Sentral) . I got there about 40 minutes before departure to see the waiting situation.

hatyai trip ktm

1 sign was placed in front of Gate A pointing passengers of the MySawadee 1004up to the waiting area. Notably, the sign here at Gate A does not relate to the train name of MySawadee  as stated on the KTMB Integrated Ticketing System (KITS)  ticket, with the name given here as Tren Ekspres Sawadee Holidays  instead.

hatyai trip ktm

The crowd of MySawadee 1004up at Gate A.

hatyai trip ktm

I decided to wait around the gate line at Gate A, learning from my experience on the Ekspres Khas Keluarga Malaysia 1028up from KL Sentral to Tumpat .

hatyai trip ktm

The departure screen did not reflect the MySawadee 1004up .

hatyai trip ktm

My ticket for the MySawadee 1004up  from KL Sentral to Hat Yai on the KTMB Mobile App .

hatyai trip ktm

Strangely, the QR code scanner was covered with a piece of tape.

KITS Ticket Scanning

hatyai trip ktm

Announcements were made on a loudhailer for passengers to find a staff to scan tickets for boarding. A staff with a handheld device, the same as on Shuttle Timuran trains, was on hand to scan all 360 passengers’ tickets.

hatyai trip ktm

Holding my phone towards the staff for the KITS scanning roulette.

Similar to Shuttle Timuran trains, the handheld device had no line at certain times, resulting in the ability to successfully scan in a lucky draw. Now I’m wondering if the signal issues on Shuttle Timuran trains are actually due to the lack of mobile data on the railway line, the handheld device itself, or a mashup of both.

hatyai trip ktm

Passengers for the MySawadee 1004up were kept updated on the boarding situation by loudhailer.

hatyai trip ktm

I was quite fortunate to have successfully scanned my ticket early in the process as the crowd of over 300 quickly swarmed the 1 available handheld device for scanning. The whole situation was a mess.

hatyai trip ktm

I headed back to Gate A to queue for boarding after my successful scan.

hatyai trip ktm

Announcements were made here too for passengers to queue only if they have successfully scanned their tickets. Those who have not scanned tickets will board last when the handheld scanner moves to the gate line.

hatyai trip ktm

Queuing up in 2 lines at Gate A.

hatyai trip ktm

About 16 minutes before departure, Gate A was opened for MySawadee 1004up passengers to board.

AFC (Air-conditioned First Class)

Interestingly, there is also 1  AFC (Air-conditioned First Class) coach attached on MySawadee  at the rear of the train.

The signal was given for the ETS Platinum 9279dn to proceed once the MySawadee 1004up  had cleared from the main line.

hatyai trip ktm

The ETS Platinum 9279dn passed by late at 10.44pm. As such, my MySawadee 1004up also departed late.

hatyai trip ktm

Thailand TM 6 Immigration Forms were given out by KTM staff at this time.

hatyai trip ktm

A QR code to scan to fill up vaccination information and to upload your vaccination certificate was also shown. This was the first time I’m seeing this system as the last time I entered by flight to Hat Yai, my vaccination status was checked on the spot by staff before immigration.

The system was clunky and only accepted .jpg or .png files. A screenshot of my Notαrise vaccination certificate failed twice, but did the trick after a third try.

hatyai trip ktm

Karaoke was in full swing at night with songs by KTM staff. Passengers can also select their own songs from the karaoke system behind.

hatyai trip ktm

The generous legroom on board the Event Coach follows the original 13-row layout of the ASC (Hyundai) .

hatyai trip ktm

A tray table is also available at each airline seat except for the first row out to the event space.

hatyai trip ktm

Now it’s my turn to head to the ABC for supper.

hatyai trip ktm

Joining the queue at the ABC.

hatyai trip ktm

The selection available on the counter.

hatyai trip ktm

The menu available on board the MySawadee 1004up ABC.

hatyai trip ktm

For supper, I ordered a Nasi Garlic Daging Bulgogi (RM12) and a hot Teh Tarik (RM3).

hatyai trip ktm

The Nasi Garlic Daging Bulgogi was… interesting. It was my first time eating such a combination of dishes which is like Malay-style Korean food. The Nasi Garlic sounded like Garlic Fried Rice, which was just more of a yellow rice. This was despite a Shopee listing also listing the same item as Korean Beef Bulgogi with Garlic Fried Rice . The Beef Bulgogi was saucy which mixed well with the yellow rice, which then became like having a briyani with curry.

Would I recommend it? Eat it if you would like to try Malay-style Korean food to satisfy your curiosity.

Padang Besar Railway Station

hatyai trip ktm

The MySawadee 1004up arrived at  Padang Besar Railway Station at 6.48am – 18 minutes late.

hatyai trip ktm

25102 Pulau Besar  will be decoupled here at the border of Malaysia and Thailand.

hatyai trip ktm

Heading for Malaysia and Thailand immigration at Padang Besar Railway Station . Bags do not need to be brought for this procedure which was very convenient.

hatyai trip ktm

Queuing for Malaysia immigration.

hatyai trip ktm

The same QR code as passed around on board the MySawadee 1004up the previous night was also available around the immigration area at Padang Besar Railway Station .

hatyai trip ktm

Heading for Thailand immigration.

hatyai trip ktm

Before entering the immigration queue, your vaccination certificate must be shown to the staff at the side counter for verification.

hatyai trip ktm

Once verifying my Notαrise vaccination certificate, a stamp was placed in the middle of the tearing portion of the TM 6 Immigration Form.

Hmm, does this mean the QR code to scan to fill up vaccination information and to upload your vaccination certificate was a double job?

hatyai trip ktm

Anyway, heading for Thailand immigration.

hatyai trip ktm

Once done with Thailand immigration, re-boarding was immediately allowed. There is no separation between passengers who have cleared immigration, have not cleared immigration, or not going to Thailand.

Immigration took quite long as there were only 3 counters each for Malaysia and Thailand opened to serve all passengers going to Hat Yai.

It’s the first time for the AFC to be anywhere north of Bukit Mertajam too, as the AFC had only operated as far north to Butterworth on the Ekspres Mutiara and Sinaran Utara only.

hatyai trip ktm

hatyai trip ktm

Aside from the huge mess at KL Sentral for scanning tickets to check-in on KITS , the MySawadee is a very convenient service to travel from KL Sentral to Hat Yai with a proper bed for a night journey and no intermediate stops along the way. Even with the immigration delay at Padang Besar , it would still be faster to be taking a train into Hat Yai as the road checkpoints would be jammed up at the ends of the Malaysia Day long weekend.

With a focus on tourism over balik kampung schedules for other excursion trains, the MySawadee  could possibly be of high demand in future for both domestic and international tourists if more such trains are scheduled, and with the very high demand for ADNS berths, perhaps even higher fares can be charged for the comfort and convenience of having a night direct service to travel directly to Thailand from the capital of Malaysia.

About Hat Yai

Hat Yai is a border town which came into existence fairly recently (1922) and grew as a consequence of being a transport hub and a place where people come from over the border in nearby Malaysia to eat, drink, shop and enjoy the nightlife which is more exotic than in Malaysia. In terms of eating, drinking, shopping and exotic nightlife Hat Yai has plenty of all of these at prices which represent value for money. Hat Yai also has some good hotels, such as the Grand Plaza Hotel, which are very luxurious and inexpensive for what you get.

Saneha Nusorn Road in Hat Yai

The busiest part of Hat Yai in the evening time is the Saneha Nusorn Road, which is side road off the Thumnoonvithi Road that runs eastward from Hat Yai Railway Station. The Saneha Nusorn Road features four major shopping centres, lots of restaurants ranging from a branch of McDonalds through to some large and moderately expensive seafood restaurants where fish and other seafood is sold by weight and consumed in large volumes by Asian visitors, and Hat Yai’s two best hotels. The Saneha Nusorn Road also has travel agents, convenience stores, smaller independent shops and market stalls selling a variety of products. If you want to experience some of Hat Yai’s famous exotic nightlife then visit the Pink Lady bar at the Grand Pink Hotel, also on the Saneha Nusorn Road.

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train, What You May Need to Know Before You Go

May 10, 2023 by Vanessa Workman 12 Comments

Padang Besar, Malaysia has been a mystery to me for nearly 10 years. Yet, seeing so many recent social media posts about fun train rides from Hat Yai to Padang Besar and beyond kept gnawing at me, because they look fun and adventurous. To be totally honest, my own experience of traveling through Padang Besar haunts me to this day. Could it be possible that going to or from Hat Yai to Padang Besar by train could be a fun, stress-free experience? I made it my mission to find out. * January 2024 update be sure to get your Malaysia Digital Arrival Card HERE

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train

You see, years ago, as a new blogger, I had a Malaysia taxi mistakenly drop me off at the Padang Besar, Malaysia border crossing. I somehow managed to walk all the way to Thailand before realizing I hadn’t officially checked out of Malaysia. I had walked past Malaysia Immigration but no one stopped me, so I assumed it was not the correct passport stamping place. Even when I yelled hello a few times, no one seemed to be around or even see me. I was invisible.

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train

Imagine my surprise when I eventually saw the Thai Immigration officers and their serious faces. I was new at ‘back road’ travel and it scared me. I then walked back to Malaysia and went to the Bukit Kayu Hitam crossing instead, and vowed never to step foot in Padang Besar again. Well…hello again Padang Besar! Many years later, I finally understand this confusing border crossing thanks to Malaysia and Thailand train travel options. I’m also grateful I didn’t have to walk from Padang Besar, Thailand to Padang Besar, Malaysia again.

Here’s what I learned about going from Hat Yai to Padang Besar by train…

Get to Know the Hat Yai Station (Haadyai Station)

The Hat Yai Train Station (Haadyai Station) is located near the Hat Yai city center , at the intersection of  Thumnoonvitha Road and Rotfai Road. In addition to the antique train car adorning the front lawn, the adjacent Train Station Hotel’s distinctive red, white and blue exterior paint is visible from blocks away. You can’t miss it!

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train

Both the SRT (State Railways of Thailand) and KTM ‘Keretapi Tanah Melayu’ (Malaysia Railways) operate services from Hat Yai Train Station. This may be why some find online sources confusing. The SRT lines split at Hat Yai with one line continuing south to Sungai Kolok, Thailand (1 km from the Malaysia east coast border) and the other line going to Padang Besar, Malaysia. The KTM also goes from Hat Yai to Padang Besar, Malaysia.

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train

The train trip from Hat Yai to Padang Besar Malaysia covers a distance of 60 Kilometers and takes about 1 hour. There are two brief stops along the way at two train stations; one is Khlong Ngae and another at Padang Besar (Thailand). Yes, there are two Padang Besars. And yes, I almost got off at the wrong station. Sit tight because a few hundred meters away is the Padang Besar, Malaysia train station.

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train

The Padang Besar, Malaysia train station is the immigration stop for both Thailand and Malaysia train travel passengers. It’s important to remember that there are two border controls to pass through and a time change (Malaysia is 1 hour ahead of Thailand), so be sure to factor that in when planning your itinerary or you may end up missing your train.

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train

Getting SRT Shuttles and KTM Train Tickets

I was told at the Hat Yai Train Station, that I could not buy tickets for the train from Hat Yai to Padang Besar in advance. Not online, nor in person. I could find no options on line for Thailand train tickets, so I had gone to the station the day before my intended day of travel. The attendant told me to just come the next day; 0730, 0900 and 1400 were the scheduled train times for the train from Hat Yai to Padang Besar.

I asked her twice, btw, to make sure I got the information straight. I also asked her if there was any chance that I wouldn’t get a seat because the train was fully booked and she told me, no.

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train

My plan was for a 0900 departure and thankfully I arrived early enough to catch the 0730 departure because it was smooth sailing. Had I been on the 0900 train I think I would have had some layover time, but as it turned out my train travel timing was perfect.

After further post trip research, I wasn’t so sure I heard the woman right because I couldn’t find any 1400 train listed. I also came across real time information on this State Railway of Thailand website: HERE . The website is slow as molasses to load, but if you wait long enough it comes up. This website actually does give you the option to purchase a ticket in advance, but it’s painfully slow and not really necessary. It does however confirm the train times. *Do note that arrival times may be displayed in Thai time and all train times are subject to change

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train

I didn’t land in a fancy ‘modern’ train, but was assigned a seat on an older train. I assume this was a ‘shuttle’, but no complaints from me as it was a ride heading in the direction I wanted to go. Cheap too. Just 50Baht for the 1-way, hour long journey.

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train

About 30-minutes later our train stopped at Khlong Ngae Train Station for about 10-minutes. Looking on a Google map later, I couldn’t even find this place listed on a map. But it obviously exists, because I have a photo to prove it.

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train

Closer to the 1-hour mark our train pulled up in the Padang Besar, Thailand train station. Don’t let the name fool you, it’s not your stop. After a brief stop at this station, the train continues to the Padang Besar, Malaysia train station.

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train

Arriving at Padang Besar Train Station in Malaysia

Once you arrive at the Padang Besar Train Station, all passengers disembark and go through Thai immigration check point to get their passports stamped out of Thailand. The herd then lines up at the Malaysia immigration check point to get stamped into Malaysia. It may seem a bit chaotic, but they are surprisingly well organized.

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train

So, boom, you’re now in Malaysia. Beautiful Padang Besar, Malaysia. If you don’t already have a KTM train ticket for onward Malaysia train travel, now is the time to hustle your butt upstairs and buy one. If you get lucky (like I did) the next train will be coming soon.

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train

The good news is that the Padang Besar Malaysia train station is a decent place to while away time. It’s spacious, has food, information, a money changer, sim cards and they even sell minivan tickets in case you can’t wait any longer. But! Remember, you are saving a lot of money by taking the train, so patience is a money saving virtue. Oh, and there is also an Indian Temple next door you can visit.

Coming by train from Arau, Perlis? The KTM train departure schedule for Arau train station to the Padang Besar Train Station is 1230, 1505, 1614 and 2346. The ticket price is just RM3.20.  It’s a RM21 GRAB taxi fare from the Kuala Perlis Ferry Jeti to the Arau train station (in case you are coming from Langkawi, Malaysia or the Kuala Perlis bus station). There’s also a car park at the Arau Train Station in case you’re considering leaving your car in Malaysia, while you visit Thailand.

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train

Coming by train from Kuala Lumpur? Here is what the Padang Besar arrival times look like. The Platinum and Gold ETS trains make the journey rather quickly!

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train

Looks great on paper, no? However, don’t forget the two immigration stops that need to be include in the itinerary; Malaysia and Thailand. Conveniently they are both located at the Padang Besar, Malaysia train station, but there is still an estimated processing time of 30-minutes to 1-hour depending on the crowds. So, heading from Padang Besar to Hat Yai, you can expect at least some wait time between trains.

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train

Confusing? Yeah, maybe a little bit. The biggest takeaway is that the early bird will catch the trains (in both directions) in a timely manner. From Hat Yai south to Padang Besar 7:30am is the winning time slot. Heading from Padang Besar to Hat Yai, be sure you are cleared through immigration and have ticket in hand by 1600 Malaysia time and you’ll be arriving safe and sound in Hat Yai by around 1600 Thai time. You can read more about the train route from Kuala Lumpur to Padang Besar here: All Aboard! Riding the Rails from Kuala Lumpur to Perlis & Beyond

If you decide not to wait for the next train to Hat Yai If you decide not to wait for the next train from Padang Besar to Hat Yai, do note that those convenient duel Malaysia/Thailand immigration desks are unfortunately only for train passengers. If you decide to take a van or taxi, well it’s almost as labor intensive as waiting several hours for a train. At best you might skim an hour or so from your adventurous journey.

Step 1: Go to the entry of the Padang Besar train station steps and hire a taxi. That taxi will then take you to another immigration stop for cars. It’s a drive thru actually. Step 2: And once you are officially checked out of Malaysia, your Malaysia taxi will then take you to Padang Besar (Thailand) immigration and drop you there. I paid RM30 for my taxi, but the price could vary, so don’t be surprised. Step 3: Entry to the Padang Besar (Thailand) Immigration is in the front of the building (in case your taxi drops you in the back like mine did).

*Do also note that there are quite a few aggressive taxi touts hanging around behind the Padang Besar (Thailand) Customs/Immigration, so beware. I was quoted a whopping 1000baht for a taxi ride from Padang Besar to Hat Yai, which is rediculous. There is a mini van stand across the street and they charge just 60baht. The trip takes about 45-minutes and you will be delivered to Hat Yai’s Bus Station #1. From there you can flag down a taxi or songthaew to your Hat Yai destination of choice.

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train

If you are heading south from Padang Besar into Malaysia, the farther south your destination is, the more likely you will need to book your train tickets online in advance because tickets sell out. Traveling through Northern Malaysia, both Perlis and Kedah are fairly easy to navigate spontaneously, but things can get more complicated once you hit Penang and Perak, because train travel is extremely popular there.

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train

The beauty is that buses, taxis and ferries offer ‘other’ affordable transportation options, should you hit a snag along the train route. Oh, and online transportation sources sometimes say ‘tickets’ aren’t available, which may well mean that tickets can only be booked in person, so don’t panic. Happy train travel!

Hat Yai to Padang Besar by Train

Hi, thanks for the review on the recent situation! I’m travelling from Thailand to Malaysia in June 2023 and I was confused with the information out there! On the internet I found some information that the Thai immigration border location changed or so, but that’s not the case right? Also, do you know if there are mini busses going from Hat Yai to Padang Besar, in case I miss the train?

Hey Lia, immigration locations not changed that I know of. You can also cross at Dannok to Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah. Padang Besar is the Perlis crossing and the train route. Can catch mini vans at bus station #1… lots of mini vans. It can all get a bit overwhelming at times, so in a pinch a taxi can take you for about 1500 baht. If you take a mini van to Padang Besar, Malaysia ask them to drop you at the train station there, not just ‘on the street’. The Thai and Malaysia immigration offices are there. *There is also a Padang Besar, Thailand. And the time changes once you cross the border. Malaysia is one hour ahead of Thailand. Good luck and safe travels.

Hey! Thanks for awsome post! I will be doing it next week and it was very helpful! I know you mentioned currency exchange at the station in Padang Besar. Thats my only concern. So I will be able to change my Thai Bhat to Malaysian money?

November 1, 2023 at 9:04 pm

Hey Pati, I didn’t use the money changer myself, but did see the money changer sign. :)

This is an absolute gem! You saved me a lot of time and potential problems. Thank you!

Thank you! It wasn’t easy. I think I’ve already made all the mistakes, so hopefully it should be smooth sailing for you.

Need an advice. I manage to book 730 am ticket from Padang Besar to KL Sentral. But I wonder I can make it to the station at the right time or not (due to hotel distance to padang besar, Hatyai immigration process, Padang Besar immigration process etc).

January 19, 2024 at 7:23 pm

If you are staying in Padang Besar, can make it. But if you are coming from Hat Yai, you should book from Padang Besar (10:30am I think) . Because you can catch the shuttle train from Hat Yai at 7:30am and immigration 30-min+ and then you have a time change. Leaving Hat Yai at 7:30am is 8:30am in Malaysia. You arrive in Padang Besar 8:30am Thai Time. There ‘may’ be a mini van option at Bus Station #1. Go there and ask them what the departure times are. Otherwise private taxi. If you rebook a later train ticket make sure it’s a Platinum or Gold (cuz they are faster and more comfortable). I think you’ll save mioney by just rebooking a train ticket (if you can) rather than hire car. That immigration office at the train station is only for train passengers. If you go by taxi or mini van it’s a little time consuming cuz you have to go through Thai customs office. ** Train route 100% of the way is much more efficient (in my opinion). Hope this makes sense..:)

Hi…I had plans to go to Padang Besar from Kuala Lumpur (KL Sentral) this February, but ETS tickets were sold out on the KTMB online platform, and so was the reverse direction. Is it possible to buy the tickets directly to the officer at the station counter?

February 2, 2024 at 12:54 pm

If your travel dates are during Chinese New Year it will likely make no difference, but you could try. *Or check with a travel agent cuz maybe some of them book seats in advance to corner the market. CNY in Hat Yai is HUGE. Did you look at Butterworth to Pedang Besar? That ‘might’ be a sneaky way to get in; as in book to Butterworth and then book another for Padang Besar. To be honest you’d be lucky to even get a decent room in Hat Yai at this late date. But if CNY is not the reason you are going to Hat Yai, you might better look at changing your dates. (I got stuck in KL during an Indian Holiday for the same reason, trains ALL booked and flights to my intended destination were through the roof). Good luck! :)

February 29, 2024 at 1:24 pm

Please advise: I am booked on the overnight train from Padang Besar to Bangkok Krung Thep terminal. It leaves at 17:00. I am in Georgetown, Padang and would take ferry to Butterworth terminal. Would the train from Butterworth leaving at 14:35 and arriving at Padang Besar at 16:26 leave me with enough time to make the 17:00 train? I am concerned by possible differences in time plus immigration procedures — not understanding if I have 30 or 90 minutes for transit time. Of course I will leave earlier if necessary

February 29, 2024 at 8:32 pm

Is that 5pm Thai time? If arriving at 430pm Malaysia time (it will be 330pm Thai time). An hour and a half ‘should’ be ok. But you have very little room for error. Just hustle your butt as soon as you get to Padang Besar (Malaysia side). 2 hours just to get to Padang Besar sounds so slow. Another option for you would be to get to Sungai Petani and get on a KTM Platinum train to Pedang Besar, which is faster. Looks like there is a 2:16pm Platinum pick up there and it arrives in Padang Besar at 3:30pm (Malaysia time). GRAB might be about 50RM. But to answer your question 90 minutes should be adequate if you don’t have any problems or passport issues, etc..

Hatyai: Budget & Itinerary

  • omaralattas
  • 19th January 2023

Dikemaskini pada: 29 November 2023

Hi semua!

Tapi sebelum tu, apa kata korang subscribe, like dan share video-video kat channel Youtube aku tu. Hahahaha..

Anyway, kalau korang tanya aku, aku lebih suka stay di Hatyai ni sekurang-kurangnya 4 hari 3 malam (termasuk perjalanan pergi balik). Sebabnya 1 hari korang boleh buat day trip ke Songkhla. Tapi kalau timing korang tak berapa nak mengizinkan, 3 hari 2 malam pun cukup.

Oh, by the way, bila aku sebut Songkhla tu ia merujuk Songkhla City.

Itinerary Hatyai 4H3M

Ini ialah cadangan itinerary dengan menaiki ETS.

  • Day 1:  KL Sentral – Padang Besar via ETS. Padang Besar – Hatyai via van atau SRT Train.
  • Day 2:  Hatyai city tour, food hunting or shopping
  • Day 3:  1 day or 1/2 Songkhla city tour
  • Day 4:  Hatyai – Padang Besar via van or SRT Train, Padang Besar – KL Sentral via ETS.

Nota: Kadar tukaran 100 baht = RM 13

Anggaran Kos:

So, better sediakan perlindungan yang perlu.

Tukaran Mata Wang

Tapi aku tak sure kalau dia available sepanjang masa.
  • ATM withdrawal — make sure korang activatekan oversea withdrawal ni. Sekitar RM 30 (rate November 2023 = 0.138) Mahal giler! So, kalau nak keluar juga, keluarkan sekali je. Jangan keluarkan banyak kali dok mengkayakan bank.

Maybank2U Overseas Debit Card Activation

So, korang kena bawa travel adaptor.

Sim Card Booth @ KTM Padang Besar

  • Operator: DTAC | 7 hari | Harga: RM 28
  • Operator: AIS | 7 hari | Harga: RM 35
  • Operator: DTAC | 15 hari | Harga: RM 35

Celcom 3-Day Internet Pass

So, stand by la mobile phone korang.

So, membazir masa. Aku suggest, kalau nak naik train ni, naik masa nak balik nanti dari Hatyai ke Padang Besar.

So, aku ringkaskan seperti berikut:

  • Bayaran yang dikenakan: RM 30 seorang (as per November 2023).
Just beritahu nama hotel dan kalau dia macam blur-blur ayam, tunjukkan alamat.

Perjalanan Pulang: Hatyai – Padang Besar

Slot masa: flexible
  • Private van (11 pax): 2,200 baht (RM 304) per van. Slot masa: flexible

  • Tarikh perjalanan
  • Waktu perjalanan pulang ETS
  • Jumlah penumpang
  • Pick-up point (nama/lokasi hotel)

Sebagai makluman tambahan:

  • Waktu tempahan ialah SEHARI SEBELUM TARIKH PERJALANAN PULANG .
  • Confirmkan lokasi drop-off korang iaitu Stesen KTM Padang Besar .

  • Perjalanan pula mengambil masa kira-kira 1 jam .

Sentiasa ingat tu supaya korang tak tersilap beli tiket waktu perjalanan pulang nanti.

Tren Khas “My Sawasdee” KL Sentral – Hatyai

And then, tren pula nak tukar kepala lokomotifnya, so semua proses ni mengambil sedikit masa. Sementara tu, boleh la korang posing-posing buat content. Hahaha..

Getting around in Hatyai

Dan app Grab ni is the same app yang kita guna di Malaysia.

Lagi satu, sebelum menaiki tuk-tuk, tanya dulu harganya. Kalau korang dah setuju harganya, baru naik. Jangan main naik je, dah sampai baru tanya harga. Silap-silap kena ketuk dengan tuk-tuk! Eh, sedap pulak bunyinya…

Kes last minute booking. Hahaha.

Ia mungkin berbeza mengikut rate semasa. Harap maklum).

📍 Variety Winner Hostel (small double room) — RM 72 semalam Terletak di hadapan Lee Gardens Plaza dan Lee Gardens Night Market. Sangat senang nak mencari makanan halal.

So, tak perlu risau nak cari makanan halal.

Dibuka darijam 10 pagi hingga 7 malam. Bagi aku, pulut ayam sini sedap. Nasi komok (briyani Thai) pun sedap. Harga seketul ayam dengan nasi pulut dalam 80 or 90 baht kalau tak silap aku. Lagi best kalau korang makan kat situ, ada disediakan acar. Jangan lupa order air di gerai awek cantik kat sebelahnya tu. Air lemon mint dia manthoppp. Teh ais pun sedap.
Kalau korang jenis yang suka tomyam yang ada strong flavour dan pekat, this is the place to go. Puas hati!

Sabun, krim, serum… you named it. Rambang mata nak memilih.

Hahaha..

Huhuhuhuuu….

Songkhla Day Trip via Tuk-Tuk

So, korang pandai-pandai la kawtim.

Nothing much to do.

Personally, aku rasa boleh skip je sebab on the other side of the station tu, cuma ada temple kecil je. But for non-Muslim especially Buddhist, kalau you guys nak visit and do some prayers, boleh je pergi.

Ada la statue, monument, meriam and some other stuff. Tapi bagi aku nothing much too see here.

Hi Ain. Thanks sudi singgah baca blog saya. Kaitod Meena buka jam 10 pagi. Decha saya tak pernah pergi, so saya tak pasti. Saya selalunya datang sebelum jam 7.00 pagi. So tak ramai orang. 8 ke atas memang dah kena beratur.

Terima kasih sharing

Sama-sama, Su. 😊😊😊

Wassalam Nabiha. First of all, thanks kerana sudi singgah blog saya. Van ke Hatyai pula saya rasa should be okay. Vannya ada luas dan selesa. Atau mungkin Nabila hubungi pengendali van, tanya dahulu. Tapi maaf saya tiada contact numbernya.

Assalamu’alaikum, En. Omar.

Blog awak banyak membantu.

Tk for the sharing~

Wassalam Ernie. Thanks sudi singgah blog saya. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Orait. Terima kasih, En Omar.

Hi, boleh share number2 phone tuktuk ke van or any transport yg digunakan kat sana.. sy first time nak pergi

Hi Atie. Saya dah email nombornya ya.

salam nak tanya, Kho Hong Mountain Viewpoint ni, nak naik atas perlu naik cable car ( Hatyai Cable car) atau dua tempat ni beza lokasi. berbaloi ke tak naik cable car tu. untuk ke water fall, kena tracking jauh ke ta, gambar ikan tu area waterfall ke… sy nk bawak trip kumpulan byk peringkat umur, sesuai ke masuk ke waterfall ni. Tq

Salam Ana. Nak ke Kho Hong Viewpoint tu tak perlu naik cable car. Dari carpark tu, kena jalan kaki naik bukit sikit je. Cable car dekat area tu juga. Personally, cable car tu bagi saya tak worth pun nak naik. Sebab on the other side tu cuma ada satu temple kecil je.

Terima kasih atas blog anda!

Hi TF. Thanks sudi singgah blog saya ya. 😊😊

Hi, boleh share number2 phone tuktuk ke van or any transport yg digunakan kat sana.. trip saya 4 org…first time nak pergi..akhir bln 10 ni…

Hi Iza, ini nombornya. +66842515025 (Uncle Yaw). Dia takde Whatsapp rasanya. So sms atau call je.

Hi Hani. Thanks sudi singgah. Semoga bermanfaat ya. Have fun and stay safe! 😊😊

Hi! Thanks share itinerari dan semua details dekat Hatyai ni. Saya nak pergi bawak ayah saya bulan 12 ni, and ingat nak buat trip ke Songkhla tu jugak. Boleh tanya tak kalau contact Uncle Yaw tu, awak contact dia in advanced atau sebelum trip ya?

Hi Bell. Thanks sudi singgah blog saya ya. Saya baru je sat ni update nombornya. Uncle Yaw tak dapat dihubungi. So Bell boleh try contact Uncle Mured di +66 85 897 1350. Saya pergi dengannya hari Sabtu yang lepas.

Terima kasih atas perkongsian, sangat2 membantu. Saya first time nak ke Hatyai.

Alhamdulillah. Thanks singgah baca ya. Have fun and stay safe di Hatyai! 😊😊

Terima kasih atas perkongsian. Saya nak tanya; 1.

Terima kasih.

Nice sharing! Sgt membantu! Keep up the good work. Semoga dikurniakan kebaikan&rahmat berpanjang❤️

Alhamdulillah. Terima kasih Cik Mulan atas doanya juga ya. Semoga kebaikan yang sama berbalik kepada awak. 😊😊

KTM Train from Kuala Lumpur to Hat Yai 2024 (KL to Hatyai Train)

Travelling from Malaysia to Thailand by train on the KTM overnight sleeper train from Kuala Lumpur to Hat Yai is no longer possible as this Intercity service has been cancelled from May 2016.

From this date you will now have to use the new high-speed Electric Train Services from KL Sentral to Padang Besar , then catch a Shuttle Train from Padang Besar to Hat Yai .

How long does it take to travel from KL to Hat Yai by train?

The duration of the journeys all depends on the connection time at Padang Besar station.

Unless you plan your journey well, the wait at the border station can be quite long for most arrivals from KL.

If you do arrive on one of the ETS trains without a good connection to Hat Yai, you may be better off walking over the land border and taking a bus or minivan to Hat Yai, or if you don't mind paying extra, take a taxi (see below for more information).

(Jadual Waktu Keretapi dari KL Sentral ke Hat Yai)

  • For travel in the other direction from Hat Yai to KL click here >

As there are only two Shuttle trains a day from the border to Hat Yai, you will want to take a train from KL that best connects with these services.

When these trains arrive at the border station of Padang Besar, if you want to catch a Shuttle Train to Hat Yai you will have to go through passport control and get stamped out of Malaysia and into Thailand.

The immigration area is only opened when a train arrives from Thailand or is due to depart to Thailand.

All inbound passengers are processed first, then once they are all cleared, outbound passengers are allowed through.

For more information please visit our Padang Besar station page by clicking on the picture link below:

Immigration at the Padang Besar station >

Another alternative to the Shuttle Train to Hat Yai is to walk over the tracks (go upstairs avoiding the passport control area), then walk over the main road border crossing into Thailand.

Once you come out of the Thai immigration area, there is a bus stop on the opposite side of the road on your right.

From here you can catch a cheap, but now rather infrequent local bus to Hat Yai city centre, or Hat Yai bus station (first stop).

A better and quicker alternative is to take a minivan service from Padang Besar to Hat Yai bus station that departs from the centre of town (about a 15 minute walk).

If you want to take a taxi, you can get one as you come down from the walkway over the tracks from the station.

If you travelling on the train from Kuala Lumpur to Hat Yai just to catch a bus from Hat Yai bus station (which is around 5km from Hat Yai train station ), you can get off the train at the border station of Padang Besar and before going through immigration, go upstairs where there is a walkway over the railway tracks that takes you to the main land border crossing.

Turn left after the walkway and get stamped out of Malaysia.

It is another five to ten minutes walk through "no man's land" to the Thai immigration checkpoint (you can stop on the way to do some duty free shopping at the large complex about halfway up the hill).

Once you have been stamped into Thailand come out to the main road and you will see a bus stop on the other side of the road to your right.

Cheap local buses (44 Baht) stop here every 30 minutes or so, for Hat Yai and the first stop in the city is the main bus station where you can catch a bus to most places in Southern Thailand , like Trang, Krabi, Phuket and Surat Thani (for Koh Samui / Phangan).
