Mexico and the Caribbean
Spend your days rolling in the waves, relaxing by the pool or enjoying quiet time (thanks to some superior kids' clubs) at these island resorts.
Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Riviera Maya, Mexico
With massive waterparks, daily slimings and Nickelodeon characters galore, the kids have it made at the all-inclusive Nickelodeon Hotels & Resort Riviera Maya, a Good Housekeeping 2024 Family Travel Award Winner. But grown-ups aren’t left out of the fun. Tequila tastings, spa treatments and romantic dinners can be on your agenda thanks to the supervised club for kids ages 4 to 12. And while you probably wouldn’t be booking a SpongeBob-themed room if you didn’t have the kids in tow, the decor is as mod and classy as it can be. All the accommodations are suites that sleep up to five and have two bathrooms. Suites have direct access to a pool from the balcony. (Yes, even on the top floor!)

Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas
Winner of a 2024 Family Travel Award, Atlantis is a top choice for families of all ages looking for a mix of relaxation and adventure. Its adrenaline-pumping waterpark features high-speed slides, including a one-of-a-kind tube slide down a Mayan pyramid. Animal encounters, like getting up close to a dolphin, are thrilling in a different way. But on the other side of the massive resort, the beaches are super chill. The gentle water is just perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. Supervised clubs for kids, tweens and teens truly wow, so adults can enjoy the casino and a meal at one of the resort's fine-dining restaurants.

Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda, Dominican Republic
Movies under the stars, trapeze lessons, windsurfing — with cool activities like these, kids will never want to leave this newish resort in the lush, away-from-it-all part of the island. Supervised clubs for babies through teens keep the good times rolling while you’re at the adults-only Zen pool or doing treetop yoga. (Yes, that’s a thing.) Solar panels, recycling, plastic-free water bottles and other sustainable initiatives are part of the eco-minded resort culture.
Beaches Negril Resort & Spa, Negril, Jamaica
While this all-inclusive resort and 2024 Family Travel Award-winner caters to all ages, toddlers and preschoolers will be star-struck. Sesame Street characters entertain them with story times, dance parties and even puppet-making! That’s on top of the mini water slides, splash areas and a playground that makes little ones squeal with glee and wears them out, so they’ll hit the sack early.
Private childcare and supervised kids’ clubs (for babies through teens, including those with special needs) are an option when you want a spa treatment, a quiet dinner or just to read a book on the resort's idyllic 7-Mile Beach. All the rooms and suites got a glow-up in 2020, plus there are new villas with butler service (sign us up!)

Fairmont Mayakoba, Playa del Carmen, Mexico
When it comes to baby and kid gear, this luxury resort has you covered. Need a bottle warmer? They got it. How about a step stool for a toddler to reach the sink? Yours for the asking. With these worries aside, you can concentrate on the beauty of the surroundings (the resort is surrounded by a lush mangrove forest) and incredible bucket-list activities, like kids’ carnivals and night kayaking. All the rooms have received a glow-up and there's a sleek new beach club to boot.
Rock House Resort, Turks & Caicos
Your family may never leave the water at this Mediterranean-inspired oasis , which opened in May 2022. In addition to a full kitchen and roomy living room, many of the villa-style accommodations feature a spacious private pool. (Yes way!) And if your crew ever tires of it, fun awaits at the resort’s oceanfront infinity pool and stretch of white sand beach, which is exclusively for resort guests. Just note that while a cliffside setting makes the resort incredibly picturesque, it’s impossible to navigate with a stroller — so bring the tweens, teens and even grandparents if they don’t have trouble climbing stairs.
Embassy Suites by Hilton Aruba Resort
A brand that's popular with families because it offers separate sleeping spaces for kids and adults, Embassy Suites recently opened a location in Aruba. (Pinch us now.) The 330-suite hotel boasts a kids' pool and playground and is just steps away from the iconic Eagle Beach. A breakfast buffet (with made-to-order items) is included in the price, which is already a value. Rooms also feature a kitchenette, so you can stash drinks and snacks and save your budget for the island's many incredible water activities.
New England Cozy
Lakes, lighthouses and hiking trails make New England a great place to visit in almost any season.
Quisisana Resort, Lovell, ME
Kids will get a digital detox at this all-inclusive lakefront resort , but they’ll be too busy playing to miss their devices. Without TV or a Wi-Fi signal in the comfortable, air-conditioned rooms and cabins, they’ll be fully immersed in the slew of included activities — from paddle boating to tennis to sandcastle-building. They might even learn to kayak or catch their first fish.
At night, music fills the resort. Broadway-style shows, held in a new outdoor theater, entertain all generations. There’s something about the fresh air and a choice of lollipops that keeps most kids from getting too wiggly, and the caliber of the performances is at least on par with good community theater.
The three included daily meals — with menu items like lobster rolls and Maine blueberry pie — will leave your crew’s bellies happy and full. And if you do need Wi-Fi occasionally, you can pop in the main lobby for a signal. Shh: The kids will be fine without it.
Hidden Pond, Kennebunkport, ME
Open from May to October, this nature-focused retreat provides a refuge from city life. Yoga sessions in the garden, a shed filled with arts and crafts supplies for kids, guided nature walks and outdoor art classes are easy-going yet exciting at the same time. Cottages with fireplaces foster togetherness, and complimentary breakfast arrives at your door every morning so there's no need to rush out for coffee.
Smugglers' Notch Resort, Jeffersonville, VT
Nestled in the Green Mountains, this resort is just as fun in the summer months as it is during prime ski season. Besides eight heated pools (some with waterslides!), the action-packed lineup of family activities has plenty to do whether you’re traveling with a toddler, teen or both. Sing-a-longs, magic shows and scavenger hunts keep little ones entertained while older kids will welcome the chance to take a guided hike, design and launch a water rocket or play glow-in-the-dark volleyball. A GH 2024 Family Travel Awards winner, condos at this property accommodate up to five bedrooms, making it possible for extended family and friends to stay together.
Ocean Edge Resort and Golf Club, Brewster, MA
Beach, pool, eat, repeat — that’s how your crew will spend laid-back days at this Cape Cod gem . The private beach has gentle surf and at low tide, kids can spy little sea creatures in the tide pools. When the tide changes, head to the heated outdoor or indoor pools. Outdoor movies are the perfect wind-down to bedtime. And if you can pry the kids out of the water, activities like scavenger hunts, curated by the resort’s new director of fun (for real!) await. Just make sure to stay in the “mansion” section of the resort because that’s the part with private beach access.
Sebasco Harbor Resort, Phippsburg, ME
Kids will never forget sleeping in a lighthouse next to the ocean. The resort’s 1945 lighthouse contains recently renovated guest rooms with amazing views, sea breezes and conveniences like a fridge and microwave. The lighthouse rooms are also near the resort’s iconic oceanfront saltwater pool, which recently got a makeover. A vintage bowling alley, weekly pirate cruise and old-school kids’ club add to the New England charm.
Bluebird Cady Hill Lodge, Stowe, VT
A fantastic value, this new '70s-inspired cozy lodge is perfect for families who want to explore Vermont's Green Mountains. The scenic trails of Cady Hill Forest are just steps away and downtown Stowe is about a 10-minute walk. Two- and three-bedroom cottages at Bluebird Cady Hill Lodge have plenty of space for families and a kitchen to boot. A game room, fire pits for s'mores roasting and a pool make hanging at the lodge a nice respite in between nature activities.
California Dreamin'
Choose your Cali adventure: You can find bustling cityscapes, tranquil trails, stunning beaches and even a fairytale castle.
Los Angeles, CA
Tweens and teens won’t roll their eyes if you suggest a vacay in L.A. — where, trust us, they’ll ask you to eat at In-N-Out-Burger (look cool and say you already had it on the list). Some more must-dos: Visit the Griffith Observatory for the out-of-this-world exhibits and a stellar view of the Hollywood sign, and if you're an outdoorsy family you can hike down from the observatory to the Hollywood Walk of Fame and famous TCL Chinese Theaters .
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures , where anyone 17 and under gets in free, is conveniently located near the classic La Brea Tar Pits and the cool LACMA ( Los Angeles County Museum of Art). Some outdoor shopping at The Grove L.A. and a beach day in Santa Monica with a spin on the iconic wheel at the Santa Monica Pier will get you more well-deserved parent cred. Or, you can take a trip to Universal Studios Hollywood , where, for now, you can find the only Super Nintendo World open in the United States. Stay at The Garland in North Hollywood, a Good Housekeeping 2024 Family Travel Awards winner. It has a swanky trolley that transports guests to and from Universal, as well as other kid perks like dive-in movies and a retro-chic family suite with bunk beds.
San Diego, CA
Can’t decide between heading to the beach or exploring a big city? San Diego has the best of both worlds, with near-perfect weather to boot. Make your home base a beach resort like the Kona Kai San Diego Resort & Spa , San Diego Mission Bay Resort or, if you're bringing a big group, Shore House at Del, a Good Housekeeping 2024 Family Travel Award winner. Intersperse oceanside fun with short drives to the city’s famous zoo and museums in Balboa Park. Plan to spend at least a half day at Liberty Station , a cultural attraction that has many places to eat and shop. New stores and restaurants are open at Seaport Village , which has a classic carousel for kids to ride.

Monterey, CA
The number one reason to book a vacation in this coastal town: the aquarium. Yes, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is that good. It levels up the typical touch tank experience by letting little kids crawl through tunnels surrounded by tropical fish displays and use squirt toys to learn how animals stand up to big waves. There’s even a padded zone with eye-level exhibits for toddlers! And the whole family will be wowed by the aquarium’s newish exhibition, "Into the Deep: Exploring Our Undiscovered Ocean." Some of the creatures in the 21 live exhibit areas are newly discovered and haven’t even been named yet. Mind blown! Stay at the hotel next door, InterContinental The Clement Monterey .
Disneyland Resort and California Adventure, Anaheim, CA
If you're looking for a Disney trip with young kids, Disneyland may have the edge over an Orlando vacay. Here are some reasons why: You can get on more rides without as much walking in California, so that means fewer tired and cranky kids. Summer weather is also usually better in Anaheim than in hot-and-humid Florida. And rides like Radiator Springs Racers, which looks like it’s right out of the movie Cars , are Cali-exclusive. The new Villas at Disneyland Hotel offer options that sleep up to 12 guests plus the decor is whimsical.

22 Best Family Vacations in the U.S. That Are Perfect for Everyone — From Toddlers to Teens
From big cities to small towns, these family vacations in the U.S. will delight both kids and adults.
Lindsay Cohn is a writer, editor, and avid traveler who has visited 45 countries across six continents — and counting. She contributes to Travel + Leisure, Hotels Above Par, InsideHook, Well+Good, The Zoe Report, and more.

What people look for when traveling with kids is entirely different than for a girls trip, romantic getaway, or solo vacation. Sure, virtually any destination can be reasonably family-friendly — it just might require some more planning and preparation (which anyone who has ever traveled with a little one knows comes with the territory anyway). On the flip side, other places are filled with kid-centric activities like parks, playgrounds, zoos, interactive museums, aquariums, riverfront walking paths, and hotels that cater to guests of all ages.
Luckily, you don't have to travel far to find one of these spots. Here are 22 of the best family vacations in the U.S., from big cities to national parks for camping or glamping.
New York City, New York
New York City offers nonstop fun for families with museums, Broadway shows, and every type of restaurant imaginable. Stores like FAO Schwarz and Dylan’s Candy Bar dazzle younger shoppers. Both Central Park and the Hudson River Greenway are great spots to let the little one burn off some energy. Plus, Arlo Soho and the Freehand have bunk rooms, which will surely earn you brownie points with kiddos.
Jackson, Wyoming

When kids get a little older, there’s a definite need to seek out places with plenty of room to roam. With access to two national parks, three ski resorts, and ample outdoor recreation — from hiking to zorbing (literally going downhill inside a transparent orb) — Jackson certainly fits that description. And the Western-themed shops are great for stocking up on souvenirs, too.
San Diego, California
YinYang/Getty Images
The sun-splashed city of San Diego feels like a dream, with beautiful beaches and legendary waves. What adventurous kid wouldn’t want to take a surf lesson? Travelers who prefer to stay on dry land will find plenty to enjoy in the form of shopping, dining, and the San Diego Zoo. Fairmont Grand Del Mar and Hotel del Coronado, Curio Collection by Hilton are top picks for family-friendly lodgings.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Jon Lovette/Getty Images
Many major cities have kid-friendly attractions, but Philadelphia takes it to the next level. Tykes will love Sesame Place and the Legoland Discovery Center . Between The Franklin Institute and the Please Touch Museum , the interactive exhibits never seem to end. And that’s even before mentioning the Philadelphia Zoo and Adventure Aquarium . Apartment hotels like Roost Rittenhouse mean you won’t have to cram everyone into one tiny room.
Orlando, Florida
Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure
It wouldn’t be a list of best family vacation destinations in the U.S. without mention of "The Happiest Place On Earth." Besides big-name theme parks — among them, Walt Disney World and Universal — Orlando has some awesome hotels like the Four Seasons Resort Orlando and JW Marriott Orlando, Grande Lakes , both of which boast spacious rooms and lazy rivers.
Park City, Utah
Scott Markewitz/Getty Images
Park City is family-friendly no matter the season. The warmer months are prime for hiking, mountain biking, and riding the town lift. Kids will delight in the crafts, face painting, and food at the weekly Park Silly Sunday Market . Come winter, it’s all about skiing and snowboarding. A dusting of snow gives Main Street postcard vibes that will enchant visitors of all ages.
Cape May, New Jersey
aimintang/Getty Images
A Jersey Shore town with sandy beaches, year-round excitement, and wholesome fun, Cape May remains a longtime family favorite. It’s home to pretty Victorian homes that resemble giant dollhouses, a historic striped lighthouse, and Congress Hall — a dream of a hotel for both kids and parents. There’s also a pedestrian shopping area called the Washington Street Mall with many shops and restaurants.
Chicago, Illinois
Jumping Rocks/Getty Images
The Windy City packs a punch in terms of family-friendly attractions. Kids won’t be able to contain their excitement over the awesome playgrounds and climbing wall at Maggie Daley Park, the animal-filled Lincoln Park Zoo, and the Centennial Wheel. If it gets too chilly to spend another moment outside, head indoors to the Chicago Children's Museum or hit the Shedd Aquarium .
Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin
Chicago Tribune/Getty Images
One of the best lake destinations in the Badger State, Wisconsin Dells comes up big in the family fun department. During the summer, Noah's Ark Waterpark is the place to be for rides and games. Pirate's Cove Adventure Golf has 91 unique holes, plus a playground and picnic area. Set kiddos loose for some free-range (but still supervised) exploration at Mirror Lake State Park .
Sedona, Arizona
The breathtaking beauty of Sedona is enough to elicit a smile from even the surliest of teens. Plus, it’s super Instagrammable. Hiking through the red rocks promises to be a bonding experience. If you need a little inspiration, Fay Canyon and Sugarloaf Loop are generally considered to be relatively easy trails. Another exhilarating way to soak in the scenery that doesn’t necessitate hoofing it? Pink jeep tours .
Washington, D.C.
Don Mason/Getty Images
A trip to the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., presents an opportunity to see democracy in action and visit landmarks that bring history to life for kids (and parents). After clocking countless steps between the myriad monuments, museums, parks, and botanic gardens, return to the Fairmont Washington, D.C., Georgetown , a family-friendly hotel with connecting rooms, an indoor swimming pool, and a canine ambassador named Georgie.
Maui, Hawaii
The chance to dive into a good book while your kids build sandcastles, frolicking in the waves together — a family beach vacation is always a good idea. Maui exudes tropical charm with its golden sand, clear water, and swaying palms. The Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea caters to guests of all ages, thanks to multiple pools, kids’ programming, and babysitting services.
Mystic, Connecticut
DenisTangneyJr/Getty Images
Connecticut’s 19th-century whaling village of Mystic brims with coastal New England charm, and it's a great place to explore with the kiddos. Beeline it to Mystic Seaport , the largest maritime museum in the U.S., and go see beluga whales at the Mystic Aquarium . Afterward, grab a pie at Mystic Pizza. Even if the little ones are too young to remember the 1988 film, the pizza will still taste delicious.
Branson, Missouri
JeremyMasonMcGraw/Getty Images
Many people call Branson the epicenter of family fun in Missouri. It’s also officially the Live Entertainment Capital of the World, with dozens of shows. Nab tickets to Dolly Parton’s Stampede and Abba Tribute — Thank You for the Music. Hopefully, you’ll have time to squeeze in some local performers, too. Needless to say, there’s no chance kids or parents will be bored for even a minute in this small but mighty Midwestern town.
Gatlinburg, Tennessee
SeanPavonePhoto/Getty Images
With proximity to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, endless outdoor recreation, and scenic attractions, Gatlinburg ranks as a top destination for a family getaway. Trying to get the kids off their iPads and interested in the natural world? Bring them to the 400-foot panoramic observation deck or for a ride on the aerial cable car that goes from the slopeside amusement park Ober Gatlinburg to downtown.
Bar Harbor, Maine
Peter Unger/Getty Images
The gateway to Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor attracts outdoorsy travelers, including families keen on trading screen time for fresh air, hiking trails, and mountain-ringed beaches. Keep the kids distracted by booking a whale-watching cruise or kayaking tour. And buy a few more hours of good behavior at the many shops and eateries in the village. The Shore Path is easily accessible and oh-so scenic.
Niagara Falls, New York
Best known for the majestic natural wonder and sheer power of Niagara Falls, the town of Niagara Falls in New York offers families thrilling, water-logged voyages on the Maid of the Mist , stellar views from the Prospect Point Observation Tower, guided tours of Cave of the Winds , and hiking into the Niagara Gorge. Bonus: you don’t need to pack a passport.
Truckee, California
vernonwiley/Getty Images
Nestled in the foothills of the High Sierra mountains, Truckee is the perfect home base for a family vacation to Lake Tahoe. Travelers can soak in all the Old West charm of the shops, restaurants, and festive events downtown while still staying within a short drive of hiking and boating. When the temperature drops and the snow falls, it’s time to hit the slopes at Northstar California Resort .
Yellowstone National Park
littleting/Pradthana Jarusriboonchai/Getty Images
Visiting Yellowstone National Park as a family? Kids can become junior rangers and even receive a badge of honor making it official. Activity booklets (available for purchase at one of the visitor centers) outline the requirements, which include sitting in a real-life ranger talk and going on a hike. It’s a great way to get the youngest parkgoers excited — as if seeing Old Faithful wouldn't be compelling enough.
Williamsburg, Virginia
Greg Meland/Getty Images
Most of the notable attractions in Williamsburg — basically one giant outdoor living museum — are family-friendly. You could probably get the kids to approve of the trip by just showing them photos of the 80,000-square-foot indoor water park at Great Wolf Lodge . If they still need some convincing, sweeten the deal by promising a scoop from Bubba's Ice Cream Shack .
Outer Banks, North Carolina
aoldman/Getty Images
It’s impossible not to have a good time when visiting the Outer Banks with loved ones. Planning an epic family escape to the barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina is actually pretty foolproof. That’s because the area overflows with kid-friendly offerings, from water parks and pirate-themed mini golf to surfing, parasailing, and sprawling cabin rentals that don’t demand anyone to share a room.
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
Rachid Dahnoun/Getty Images
Hilton Head Island has all the makings of an unforgettable family vacation with Atlantic Ocean beaches, wildlife viewing, and Lowcountry cuisine. Perhaps sign the kids up for a supervised recreation program or sports camp (if that’s something they're into, of course) and go hit the links. Then, reunite for a pirate cruise, zodiac ride, visit to one of the interactive children’s museums, or dolphin watching.

These Vacations Will Make for a Trip the Whole Family Will Love
Thirty destinations that have something for everyone .
Family vacations are fun, exhausting, and exhilarating at the same. They offer an incredible opportunity to spend quality time with those you love most, but finding a destination that offers activities and adventures that everyone will love can be a challenge.
But they're out there, insists Erika Richter, travel expert and representative for the American Society for Travel Advisors (ASTA), who says that many families are opting for all-inclusive destinations and cruises for that very reason. "Family time is a priority for most Americans setting out for a vacation this summer, which is why people will seek out options that have a little something to offer everyone," she says. "Families are looking for hotels and resorts that have childcare available. This is a trend we’ll see more often, especially for the adults who want to balance out the moments of togetherness with some of their own quality time."
Make your great escape truly great, and have memories to last a lifetime, at one of these action-packed family destinations, right here in the United States and abroad.
Atlantis (Paradise Island, the Bahamas)
Beloved by families for a reason, this iconic resort in the Bahamas is a hit for all ages because of its jam-packed menu of activities, plus a Kids Concierge. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the resort's famed Dolphin Cay, a sophisticated marine-mammal habitat that offers a safe haven for dolphins and sea lions stranded after Hurricane Katrina. Take advantage of sun-soaked Caribbean location with the 141-acre water park, which features slides, river rides, and snorkeling, plus 11 pools (three for kids!) spread across the property. Numerous kid-friendly restaurants, like Carmine’s Italian and ice cream at Sun & Ice, round out the delights. For adults seeking luxury, The Cove, a high-end all-suite hotel, offers a dedicated concierge service and, for select suites, access to the newly renovated Lapis Club, with private breakfasts, hors d'oeuvres, and a full bar.
Walt Disney World (Orlando)
With 35 Disney resorts and hotels to choose from, including the all-new Star Wars Galactic Cruiser immersive experience, six theme parks and water parks, and shopping and dining destinations like Disney Springs and The Boardwalk, this is the family vacation to end all family vacations. New features for this year, which marks the 50th anniversary of WDW Orlando, include a completely revamped line-skipping service called Genie+, the wonderfully charming Cirque du Soleil and Disney show, Drawn to Life, a brand new Guardians of the Galaxy ride at Epcot, and the return of character meet-and-greets, parades, and fireworks displays, all put on hold during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Feel the magic, indeed.
Beaches Resorts (various locations)
If a week in paradise is your thing (and, really, who could argue with that?), Beaches Resorts has the market cornered for luxury all-inclusive family getaways in the Caribbean. With properties in Ocho Rios and Negril, Jamaica as well as Turks & Caicos (and one to come on the island of St. Vincent), these glorious properties offer something for everyone in your group (plus a variety of accommodations based on the size of your clan). Just some of what you can expect when you book your stay with Beaches: Sesame Street-themed play areas, the Pirates Island waterpark, unlimited water sports, an Xbox play lounge, airport transfers, and, of course, all meals and drinks. Basically, once you've put down your credit, you don't have to think about anything else besides having the time of your life.
Primland, Auberge Resorts Collection (Meadows of Dan, Virginia)
You might think this paradise, set on 12,000 acres of Blue Ridge Mountains wilderness, is an adults-only escape. And the property certainly offers plenty in that regard: expertly prepared meals, a fantastic sommelier, a luxurious spa, and myriad outdoor activities. But children of all ages will find plenty to do amid this incredible stretch of wilderness. This summer, Primland will offer youngsters beginning archery classes, family movie nights, s'mores by the outdoor fire pit, board game competitions, putting challenges, and ecological programs with the resort's certified naturalist. Our Favorite Family Destinations Across the U.S. for 2024
Hikes, museums, and train rides await, from hawaiʻi to new york and beyond..
- Copy Link copied
Our writers have taken their families to New Mexico, New York, and Kaua’i this year.
Travel changes when you have kids, but it doesn’t have to end; you just need to factor in a few more needs and opinions than before. Thankfully, the United States is packed full of must-visit destinations for the whole family, where parents and children alike can have a great time. I’ve personally enjoyed roaming southern California with my brood, exploring forests, sea caves, and snowy mountains in Sequoia National Park, La Jolla, and Big Bear, respectively.
We asked a bunch of our contributors who wrangle children as well as words for their family travel memories across the country—and their recommendations for 2024 and beyond. Your next family adventure starts here.
Kids will remember the watery spray of Niagara Falls and the contours of the Buffalo AKG Art Museum in New York State.
Buffalo, New York
My husband’s family lives in Buffalo, New York, and I’ve been visiting the city annually for more than two decades. But I’ve only learned how kid-friendly it is in the past few years. Our two-year-old son, Julian, loves romping around the seven interactive play zones—including a pretend car wash and a splashy water exhibit inspired by the Erie Canal—at the sprawling Explore & More Children’s Museum . We ride the whimsical, hand-painted ostriches and giraffes on the Buffalo Heritage Carousel , a century-old merry-go-round now fully powered by the sun; twirl among the painted branch sculptures at the Charles E. Burchfield Nature & Art Center ; and sample new foods at the recently expanded West Side Bazaar , a nonprofit food hall that highlights cuisine from Egypt, Myanmar, Congo, and beyond. While Julian is too young to appreciate Buffalo’s iconic architecture (including Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House ), we love building our own towers in the LEGO-centric Creative Commons lab at the newly reopened Buffalo AKG Art Museum . Then, of course, there’s Niagara freakin’ Falls—it will leave you so utterly gobsmacked, silencing even the fiercest toddler tantrum.
Where to stay
The 88-room Richardson Hotel inhabits the former Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane on the landmarked Richardson Olmsted Campus , designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux (of Central Park fame). Its spacious suites have vaulted ceilings and enormous windows, but it’s the colorful tiles in the mile-long hallways that form the ultimate toddler runway. —Ashlea Halpern, contributing editor
Washington’s Olympic Peninsula
The Twilight novels shined a spotlight on the small town of Forks, Washington , depicting its gloomy climate and casting it as the ideal hiding spot for sun-fearing vampires. What the books failed to capture, however, is the sublime beauty found nestled among the rainforests, waterfalls, and hot springs of the enchanting Olympic Peninsula.
As a preschooler, my son delighted in splashing in the ocean as it lapped against the craggy coastline, and later, as a burgeoning hiker, he tested his limits while clambering over felled Douglas fir trees to earn a coveted Junior Ranger badge . The Pacific Northwest keeps bringing my family back for new adventures, and with nearby Mount Rainer joining the ever-growing list of popular national parks instituting a reservation system in 2024, Olympic remains blissfully open to explorers of all ages—even those adverse to advance planning.
Calling us to visit this year is the Tree of Life , a seemingly magical tree that suspends itself in midair. With the ground beneath it having eroded, the tree’s roots are now exposed, leaving no soil to keep it secure. It’s only a matter of time before the Tree of Life comes tumbling down, and we’re hoping to catch sight of this magnificent phenomenon before it’s gone—and perhaps snap a photo with the “Welcome to Forks” sign on our way through town.
Camp alongside towering Sitka spruce at one of several national park campgrounds , or nestle into comfier digs at the scenic Lake Crescent Lodge . Or, for those seeking upscale accommodations with a rustic chic design, try Olympic Lodge by Ayres , located in the charming town of Port Angeles . — Amanda Adler
Sante Fe offers indoor and outdoor fun—and the famous Meow Wolf immersive art space.

Santa Fe, New Mexico
This New Mexican city can make you feel as if you’ve traveled abroad without the need for a passport, thanks to a strong Indigenous history and connection with Mexico. Explore indoor and outdoor attractions like Bandelier National Park , which contains preserved ancestral pueblo dwellings; the Museum of International Folk Art , which includes the Tree of Life play area; the small Georgia O’Keefe Museum ; the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market ; and the Santa Fe Reptile & Bug Museum , which has a new location housing live animals and natural history exhibits.
When we visited Santa Fe, our whole family had a blast exploring the incredible interactive installation that is Meow Wolf’s House of Eternal Return , a massive and ever-changing adventure inside an old bowling alley. Be sure to also book a ride on the Sky Railway , which offers themed rides on two fantastically painted trains that make their way between Santa Fe and Lamy as riders enjoy entertainers, music, storytelling, and more. Kid-friendly dining includes the Shed for traditional New Mexican dishes like burritos, enchiladas, and tamales. We also loved breakfast at Dolina Café & Bakery , which has New Mexican breakfast burritos as well Eastern European baked goods. For a treat, stop by Kakawa Chocolate House for chocolate truffles, ice cream, or hot chocolate.
The Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado recently completed a multimillion-dollar revitalization of its spacious 65 casitas, which can be stocked with baby gear and child-size robes and slippers on request. If you want to be right on the plaza in the heart of downtown, book a room at the historic La Fonda on the Plaza , which has a heated pool and a variety of rooms, some with sleeper sofas. Ask for the scavenger hunt booklet at check-in to keep kids busy. — Devorah Lev-Tov
Columbus, Ohio
As our plane touched down in Columbus from Tampa in Fall 2023, my then six year old told his sister they’d be welcomed on the ground with flower necklaces called leis . He’d somehow mistaken Ohio for O‘ahu when I told him we were going on a fall trip. But Columbus delivered so deeply on family fun that there was never a regret. In the Franklinton Arts District we hit the community festival called Franklinton Fridays (held two Fridays a month). And along the Scioto River nearby, the COSI (Center of Science and Industry) Museum had a Barbie exhibit in addition to all its hands-on science fun. From now through early September, there’s a Titanic exhibition with full-scale room re-creations from the ocean liner. In Columbus’s vibrant Short North Arts District, where the fall leaves were piled in a manner no Florida kid could resist, we devoured macaroons at a bakery and made bracelets at pop-up project Tenspace , where the interactive offerings are always changing.
We food hall–hopped, too, from the city’s 150-year-old public market, North Market , where we sampled Somali cuisine and Himalayan dumplings, to Budd Dairy Hall , where we played foosball while digging into pizza and cheesesteaks. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and its more than 10,000 animals might have to wait for our return visit. But at the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens , blue morphos landed on our heads in the butterfly garden, and a nature playground beckoned in the crisp fall air outside. Streets lined with beautiful homes in German Village lured us later, with the 32 warrenlike rooms of the Book Loft and Schiller Park, with its pond stocked with rainbow trout and yet another great playground.
The Junto sits right across the street from the Scioto Riverwalk and COSI Museum and sometimes offers themed rooms reflecting visiting exhibits. (We stayed in a temporarily Barbie-themed suite during our visit, at the height of the hype.) The hotel’s cozy lobby has open fireplaces and board games you can play at big tables within a few steps of beverages for adults at the Trade Room lobby bar. And the hotel’s rooftop restaurant, Brass Eye , does a great brunch with river views. — Terry Ward
Denver is an essential stop for family fun in all seasons.

Denver, Colorado
Marrying the best of a thriving city with spectacular natural beauty, Denver is a pedestrian-friendly metropolis that’s a blast with kids and, I’ve found, especially fun for an active family. On a recent trip we enjoyed visual stimulation and storytelling during a two-hour walk through RiNo street art with Denver Graffiti Tour , and our toddler found the immersive spaces of the weird and wonderful psychedelic art experience Meow Wolf thrilling and tactile. The city’s excellent museums—including the Denver Art Museum and Denver Museum of Nature & Science —capture the attention and imagination of all ages, while outdoors enthusiasts have a slew of options for hiking, such as Red Rocks (the amphitheater is the legendary home of concerts but also summer movie nights) and quaint Golden, where we enjoyed strolling with our then-baby.
Summer 2024 in Denver includes such events as the Tennyson Street Fair (July 20) and Denver Burger Battle (August 1) while this June 1 to 2 sees the inaugural Outside Festival at Civic Center Park with a family-friendly lineup of music, adventure, wellness, film, and kids activities and programming. Additionally, the country’s first carbon-positive hotel—with sustainable design and construction by Studio Gang— Populus at Civic Center Park is set for a summer debut. As appealing as the warmer months are, our favorite time to visit is winter, when it’s an alluring place to acclimate to higher altitudes and enjoy a vibrant city before heading off to mountains like Breckenridge or Vail for snowboarding.
Four Seasons is the gold standard for optimizing the hotel experience for babies, and the Four Seasons Hotel Denver is no exception, offering families traveling with youngsters miniature robes, no-tears toiletries, gear such as small bathtubs and diaper pails and, for our then 10-month-old, a welcome snack of freshly made applesauce. For older kids, the Curtis Denver – a DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel and its hyper-themed rooms—think Barbie, Comic Book Heroes, and Ghostbusters—are a must. — Kathryn Romeyn
Jackson, Wyoming
It’s impossible to say whether the national park gateway and Wild West town of Jackson (known to many as Jackson Hole: the name of the valley and the ski resort) is more captivating in snowy or warm months. Both are gorgeously sunny and blue-skied, ripe with experiences active and peaceful. My family’s recent trip was into a winter wonderland: My two-year-old began giddily learning to ski, all of us soaked in steamy springs at Astoria Hot Springs Park , and we spotted bighorn sheep, fox, and moose on a spectacular snow-blanketed safari with locally owned Jackson Hole EcoTour Adventures . Dogsledding with Call of the WYld ‘s adorable huskies was one of the most entertaining activities we’ve ever done together and cemented Jackson, for me, as a place to make indelible memories as a family.
When the snow is gone, there’s plenty of amusement in the form of fishing and floating on the Snake River, hiking, tram and gondola rides, and the rodeo. In the warmer months, there’s always something lively happening, whether it’s the Grand Teton Music Festival or the Snow King Summer Concert Series. In June, the Snow King Observatory and Planetarium open to the public with a 24-foot AstroHaven dome, a state-of-the-art one-meter PlaneWave telescope, plus interactive galleries that should entice the space-obsessed no matter their age.
From the decor—see giant video screens at the end of each hallway playing striking wildlife videos—to the pool and large hot tub plus gratis snack and hot chocolate stations, the Cloudveil, Autograph Collection Hotels , appeals to kids and kids at heart with a luxe twist. Just off the town square, family-owned Hotel Jackson is rustic meets plush with a Lebanese restaurant downstairs and a steaming hot tub a few floors up. — Kathryn Romeyn
A trip to Kaua‘i will foster a love for the environment in kids.
Kaua‘i, Hawaiʻi
With incredible hikes, marine life, and chocolate tours, lush Kaua‘i (it’s not called the Garden Isle for nothing) is a veritable playground for families. My crew learned all about how cacao is grown, harvested, and processed, and sampled all manner of deliciousness (macadamia nuts, apple bananas, lychee, spiky rambutan, cacao nibs, truffles!) during a three-hour tour at Lydgate Farms , which has won some major awards for its locally grown, sustainable chocolate. For snorkeling, join sailing excursions with Holo Holo Charters , which monitors areas where reef fish and green sea turtles are active. The grand finale of our island time? Taking to the sky (and even managing to catch a double rainbow) with Island Helicopters for a 50-minute ride over the dramatic Nāpali Coast, Waimea Canyon, and rainforests.
Try oceanfront Timbers Kaua‘i , part of the 450-acre Hōkūala resort, along the island’s southeast coastline. Boasting gorgeous multi-bedroom digs, an on-site farm (from which pineapples and papayas are delivered to rooms), a spa (a Lomi Lomi massage is a must), a restaurant, and a stunning infinity pool, the property is pure bliss. — Tanvi Chheda
Lake County, Northern California
I live in Northern California’s Bay Area, meaning my husband and I and our two kids (ages five and seven) spend a lot of time in Sonoma and Napa Valley . But we recently discovered a lesser-known spot just north of the iconic wine regions with fewer crowds, but plenty of scenic rolling hills, lakes, hiking trails, and vineyards. On a recent visit to Lake County, we went to Six Sigma Ranch and Winery , where families can book a tour of the mountainous property in an all-terrain Pinzgauer (a hefty military vehicle the kids loved bumping around in). After, our little ones fed pigs and goats at the ranch, and then we noshed on cheese and charcuterie plates while the adults sipped tempranillo and sauvignon blanc.
There’s plenty more to do. At Anderson Marsh State Historic Park , wander through the 19th-century ranch house and barn before heading out on a nature walk through beautiful marshlands full of birds and frogs. Head to Clear Lake State Park on the shores of California’s largest freshwater lake for access to a swimming beach and more hiking trails. On the way to or from Lake County from the San Francisco area, you can take a detour toward Safari West , an African safari experience on a 400-acre private preserve where the kids can be on the lookout for giraffes, rhinos, wildebeest, and zebras. Fuel up at Oxbow Market or Gott’s Roadside on the way.
The main draw in Lake County for families is Huttopia Wine Country , a glamping concept opened by a French family in 2023. With a veritable summer camp vibe, Huttopia features 93 solar-powered wood and canvas tents with an outdoor kitchenette and barbecue grill. Many also have en suite bathrooms with showers (otherwise, it’s a shared bathroom setup). There’s a swimming pool, a main lodge with dining, concessions, games (like Ping-Pong and foosball), and activities (like arts and crafts for kids and movies under the stars). We loved that there was a playground, and you can rent electric mountain bikes. Your kids will inevitably team up with newfound friends for nature exploring. — Michelle Baran, deputy editor, news

Comparing destinations: which one is right for you.
Before you pick a destination, compare and contrast your options.
Then choose the one that suits your preferences.
Halekulani offers the perfect beach holiday with its excellent oceanfront location.
It’s pretty popular, though, so expect crowds, especially during peak season.
The Beverly Hills Hotel – Dorchester Collection features a luxurious resort experience.
Be prepared to shell out for your stay here, though.
Meanwhile, Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort is ideal for epic family bonding activities.
However, you might experience some minor noise issues in your room.
After all, it’s near Disney theme parks.
Prefer a home away from home at affordable rates?
Hilton Grand Vacations Club Ocean 22 Myrtle Beach is an excellent alternative.
Its only downside is its parking space, which is quite far from the main building.
How I Picked The Destinations
To pick the destinations on this list, I first considered my personal experiences.
And I’ve had many of those since I’ve gone on numerous family trips with the kids.
To ensure a holistic review, I also asked fellow parents about their own experiences during my visits.
To write about the places I haven’t visited, I considered reviews by other travelers on trusted websites.
And with researching their official website and social media, my evaluation balances firsthand knowledge with diverse perspectives.
Our Rating Method
I rate these vacations based on the following criteria.
- Family-friendly Activities: This criterion assesses family-friendly activities. What entertainment options are available? Are there opportunities for sightseeing, outdoor adventures, or cultural experiences? Is there a pool, game room, or sports facilities? I consider these factors when rating family-friendly activities.
- Safety: I use this to evaluate safety and security. Does the area have a low crime rate? Are there CCTV cameras in common areas? I ask myself these questions when evaluating safety and security.
- Accommodation: I use this to assess the accommodation options available. Are there spacious and comfortable rooms? Does it offer family suites or interconnected rooms? These are the factors I consider when assessing accommodation comfort.
- Food Options: This criterion evaluates food options. Are there many restaurants, cafes, and food courts in the area? Does it provide kid-friendly options or buffet-style dining? Can they accommodate different dietary needs and preferences? I consider these questions when rating food options.
- Accessibility: This is used to evaluate the accessibility of every location. Are there local attractions nearby? How far is the nearest airport? Is it easily accessible by public transportation? These are the questions I ask when assessing accessibility.
- Internet Connection: I use this criterion to evaluate the internet connection of every vacation option. Is free Wi-Fi available? Is the signal strong and reliable? I consider these factors when rating internet connection.

Best vacation spots for families with teens
Best for ages: 13-18
Here’s why: Teens are notoriously moody, but that won't stop them from enjoying Costa Rica , often called the happiest country on earth. Show them rainforests, volcanos, white sand beaches and what the "pura vida" life is all about.
Do this: Soar through the canopy in Monteverde, the high altitude cloudforest where ziplining for tourism was pioneered and the rest of the world followed suit. Sky Adventures Monteverde Park also has an aerial tram and a hanging bridges tour where you can see the levels of the cloudforest and its biodiversity up close. Teens who want to say they’ve climbed a volcano can do so at Cerro Chato, next to Arenal, the country’s most famous volcano and one of the most active in the world. No trip to Costa Rica is complete without a visit to its beaches, stretching for miles along both the Caribbean and Pacific. Learn to surf in the funky town of Tamarindo at Iguana Surf where the instructors all speak English and no one goes home without having caught their own wave. Hike in the tropical waterfront paradise that is Manuel Antonio National Park — Costa Rica’s answer to Yellowstone. (You can laugh at them, but don’t feed the monkeys.)
Stay here: If your teens are feeling a need to binge their favorite show while on vacation, they’ll love the turbo speed Wi-Fi at Tierra Magnifica , a luxury boutique property in the surf community of Nosara. (You’ll love the panoramic views and sense of safety.) If an all-inclusive is more your speed, teens will appreciate dining options and beachfront activities at The Westin Reserva Conchal.

Do this: Teens anxious to drive can get behind the wheel of their own go-kart and race on six different tracks at the Broadway Grand Prix . Teens aspiring to join the PGA Tour will want to play at one of the area’s 90 golf courses which host junior opens throughout the year. (There’s also a Top Golf if you can’t get a tee time.) Meanwhile, young fans of "The Walking Dead" won’t want to miss the AMC hit show-themed escape room , and fans of "The Simpsons," The Simpsons in 4D . Teens wanting to hang out with other teens can easily do so on the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and Promenade , home to one of the country’s tallest Ferris wheels. Of course, there are also plenty of beach activities including surfing, wakeboarding and horseback riding to choose from.

Space Coast, Florida
Here’s why: Just an hour from Orlando , Florida’s Space Coast is an inspirational beach destination where teens can learn about everything from space exploration to manatee conservation.

Explore further inland on a kayak or SUP tour winding through tunnels of mangrove trees. Sea turtle sightings aren’t guaranteed, but the Space Coast does have a huge concentration of them. Teens obsessed with LED lights will be in awe in the bioluminescent lagoon . The Space Coast is one of very few places in the world to see this phenomenon where the tiniest of marine creatures emit a neon blue light for protection. Teens who want to work for NASA will never want to leave the Kennedy Space Center with its rocket garden, 3D space films, shuttle launch experience and journey to Mars. For a really memorable experience, book some add-on "enhancements" that includes immersive training courses and even a casual chat with an astronaut.

Do this: Between the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific, take advantage of the year-round swells and learn or practice surfing in Los Cabos. There are approximately 1,000 miles of coastline, so it’s never too crowded. Teens keener on marine life can snorkel and dive alongside the likes of friendly sea lions and ominous-looking, yet harmless, hammerhead sharks. Other animal encounters include camel safaris in the outback. Despite its proximity to water, Los Cabos’s breathtaking landscape includes a desert playground. For a high-speed tour, opt for an off-road ATV or UTV excursion with Cactus Tours . African Safari
Here’s why: Simply put, teens deserve to be treated to the ultimate dream family vacation before they fly the coop.

In seven nights, families can strengthen bonds and have one-of-a-kind experiences while fly camping (sleeping in the bush), river tubing, working on an African cattle farm and even visiting with predator research teams. Of course, there are plenty of game drives and walking safaris, so teens can get the most epic of photos for Instagram.
Stay here: Ask for the Family Cottage at Sosian Lodge , set on 60,000 acres of Kenyan wilderness meets working cattle ranch. Another great option is Puku Ridge Camp in Zambia. Teens staying at this lodge in South Luangwa National Park will appreciate the private plunge pools and opportunities to meet school children in local villages. 15 Tips to Make Traveling With Family More Fun & Less Stressful
Posted: July 4, 2023 | Last updated: July 4, 2023
Traveling with your brood is the time to make memories. Sure, you will encounter moments where you start to question why you ever leave the house in the first place, but ideally you should enjoy the experience as much as your children. Smart and useful family travel tips can make all the difference between a grueling and exhaustive excursion and a wonderful, relaxing getaway.
For Expert Family Travel Advice: Go Straight to the Source
For medical advice, you seek out a doctor. For educational advice, you turn to teachers. For family travel advice, head straight for the moms. They are the experts who know what works and what doesn't when it comes to setting out on adventures with kids in tow. They have tried it all, discovered the best family travel hacks, and have zero qualms about sharing their experiences with other moms ready to embark on trips with kiddos.
Debbie Dubrow is one of those "traveling moms" who has spent much of her children's lives packing up suitcases, loading up kids, and setting out to see the world. The Seattle-based mother of three shares her personal travel stories and best family travel tips with other parents ready to hit the road on her blog, Delicious Baby .
Beginner Traveler? Start Small
If you are new to the idea of traveling with children, Dubrow suggests you start small. Take your family on a smaller, local day trip and test drive your tips and hacks while being close enough to home to pull the trigger and abort the mission if necessary. Don't become discouraged if your first few local expeditions are a flop. Reflect on what worked and what didn't, make adjustments and try it again! A few trips to nearby locales will help build your confidence so you can easily transition into bigger getaways soon enough. Dubrow offers, "Most parents are pleasantly surprised to find that their worst-case-scenarios don't come true, and that they even enjoy the experience."
Pay Extra Attention to Planning
Once upon a time, you packed a bag, bought a plane ticket on the fly, and ventured out to see the world. Now that you have kids, and kids have needs, and spontaneity is as distant a memory as sleep is, you'll want to spend extra time in the planning stages of the trip . The more work you put in on the front end, the less thinking you will have to do once vacation begins.
Work Within a Budget
Vacationing with kids can get pricey, so work within a previously agreed-upon budget when planning your next getaway. Letting expenses get away from you will instantly create stress, so staying in the anticipated price range will make it easier for you to relax and enjoy. Anticipate and plan for a few unexpected expenses too.
Spend Time Scoring the Right Accommodations
There are plenty of ways to cut corners and save a dollar during travel, but if you are vacationing with several children or young children, your lodging accommodations should not be one of them. Your days will be long and action-packed, so your home base needs to be a space of reprieve, your little temporary sanctuary.
Find a family-friendly hotel or rented home that fits most of your family's needs. If you are traveling somewhere hot, be sure there is air conditioning or working fans in your accommodation. If you will need to do laundry, check and see if those facilities are on property or nearby. Look into whether the room or rental is baby-proofed and whether it has a mini-fridge and microwave for all of those snacking needs.
It is a good idea to make a room "wish list" and then scour the net and read reviews to see which accommodation best suits you (and your budget!). There will undoubtedly be a few accommodation must-haves when traveling with children that you don't want to compromise on. Know what they are and make sure they are available to you before booking.
Adjust Your Travel Pace
Another tip Dubrow emphasizes to parents taking the travel plunge is to adjust the travel pace to best suit their children. Kids find joy in the most minor of details, so allow them to experience these travel days at their leisure. You might be used to packing in eight to ten hours of sights in a big city, but should you try to apply the vacationing pace of yesteryear to travel with kids, you are likely going to fizzle out fast. Dubrow elaborates, "Avoid trying to go at the same pace you did before you had children. Slow down and give your baby or toddler time to enjoy things at their level. They might be looking at the marble floors in the Vatican instead of the arches and artwork, and that is OK."
Decide beforehand what you really want to do with the kids. Think about if it will be of interest to them and if they will be able to make it through whatever it is you are hoping to do on vacation. Build in plenty of snack breaks or a mid-day siesta or rest period, so children don't become overly tired, cranky, and downright miserable. Pack your patience-pants, as this new, slower pace of seeing the world might be a bit of an adjustment for you.
Load Up on Water and Snacks
Throughout her journeys, Dubrow discovered the power of snacks. Snacks can pretty much fix anything at a moment's notice, and you don't want to be without them. Pack items that are easy to eat while on the go and make sure they aren't loaded with sugar. Choose grain or protein-based items to give kids energy without the dreaded sugar crash looming ahead. She also reminds parents that airplanes no longer provide the delectables of days past. Small snacks and beverages are typically offered, but if you have picky eaters or children with specific dietary needs, pack plenty of your own nibbles for a lengthy flight.
Get Travel Paperwork in Order
If you are flying or planning to leave your home country, be sure that all pertinent travel documents are ready and in order. Large families mean lots of passports, boarding passes and more. Sort and organize what you can. Place a small sticky note with family members' initials on the back of all passports and slip boarding passes into them. Place a rubber band around each travel packet, so when a name is called upon, you can quickly grab the documents you need in the moment.
For families needing to get passports , be sure that you do so well ahead of time to receive them before you leave for your trip. Obtaining passports can be tedious, and nothing will ruin a family vacation faster than one family member being left without proper travel documentation.
Make Emergency Plans
When it comes to vacation, you want to think about lounging around a pool or hiking through breathtaking forests... not about losing track of your kid! Not being able to locate your child is every parent's worst nightmare, and while it is something you don't even want to contemplate, it is best to have a plan in place for this type of emergency. Sit your kids down and discuss the plan for if someone becomes lost or strays from the group during travel. Older kids should have the means to contact parents, or at the very least know their parents' phone numbers. Write parents' names, kids' names, and contact numbers inside a shoe for little children. Be sure everyone understands how to get help in the event that they find themselves alone in a foreign space.
Be Prepared for Every Eventuality When Flying With Kids
Imagine being stuffed in a small airplane with a crying child who is bored to tears or covered head to toe in apple juice (or worse) and still having several hours of air travel to go. That's the stuff nightmares are made of, and a bit of thought and preparation in this department can make all the difference. Aside from packing drinks and snacks on a flight, be sure to pack several entertainment options for kids. Great ideas are:
- Coloring books and crayons
- Electronic devices
- Games galore - both word games and paper games
- Downloaded movies and shows
- Comfort toys
Aside from entertainment options, you will want to pack a change of clothes in your carry-on. The only thing worse than having a kid get sick or have an accident while flying the friendly skies is having nothing to change them into. Toss the following into your carry-on so you are never left high and dry (or rather high and soaking wet).
- Extra undies, pants, and shirt
- Lots of disinfectant wipes and a small towel
- Pajamas if you are traveling long distances through the night
- A plastic, sealable bag for soiled clothing
- Remember to pack a first aid kit and a car seat for plane and car travel
Be a Perfect Packer
Packing for a fun family trip comes with a bit of a learning curve unless you know how to do it properly right out of the gate! Parents tend to pack in one of two ways: overpacking and underpacking. They either take along everything they can think of and then curse themselves throughout the entire trip for spending more time acting as a family pack mule than enjoying a well-deserved vacation, or they bring next to nothing and spend more time scouring the earth for those forgotten necessities than they do relaxing.
You want to strike a packing balance. Try making a list of things you need several weeks before you depart. Next, revisit your list and remove items you think you can live without. Add a few new items that you skipped over the first time around. Consider what items your accommodations might have readily available. Many rental spaces have cribs, cots, and even high chairs for families to borrow, meaning you don't have to lug that stuff with you. If your accommodations have easily accessible laundry facilities, then pack half the clothes you originally planned on taking and spend a few hours mid-vacation doing laundry (maybe while the tots take an afternoon nap).
Know When to Schedule Flight Times
If you are flying with little ones, you might want to schedule your flight during nap time or during the evening hours. This is particularly important if you have a long journey ahead of you. A few hours of snooze time can make all the difference to a family stuck in the air for several hours. Furthermore, pay attention to your layover times. It is much harder to rush through a busy airport to catch a connecting flight with three kids, two strollers, and several carry-on bags in hand.
Be Flexible and Realistic
Planning is a beautiful thing, but so is flexibility. Again, balance is the key to travel happiness, especially when kids are involved. Yes, you want the major details hammered out before you take off for fun and adventure, but you also need to remember that things happen, plans unravel, and you need to be able to pivot, recover and carry on. Expect some bumps in the road, know when to make alterations in vacation plans to suit everyone's needs, and let go of any preconceived notions that every minute of the trip will be downright magical.
Don't Forego Routine
Sure, this is vacation, and routines will vary simply due to the nature of the beast, but travel doesn't have to mean nixing all routines and structure. Kids thrive on the routines you have created for them. They help keep them safe and healthy. While plenty of routine aspects will shift during travel, keep the ones you can in place. Try to eat and sleep near the times you would typically eat and sleep at home. If you do a daily rest or nap time, see if you can swing that same routine while vacationing. If you throw the kids completely out of whack, you will soon learn that a no-rules vacation is a no-fun vacation for parents.
Establish Spending Rules Pre-Vacation
Rules. Kids don't love them, but they are necessary on so many levels. Traveling with kids means taking the littles past countless souvenir and trinket stations and stores. Get ready for your children to beg you for every little, shiny piece of whatever catches their eye. They will cry and whine for everything they see; you will stress and maybe cry a little too as you attempt to stay calm while explaining that no, they cannot have another Beanie Boo.
Set rules for souvenirs ahead of time. Maybe they get one small thing at the airport and one thing at your vacation destination. Maybe you give each kid an allotted amount of spending money and how and where they spend it is up to them. Make rules that work for your children and your budget, and be sure everyone understands those rules ahead of vacation to minimize the stress that comes along with kids begging for everything.
Don't Put Off Travel Plans
Lastly, don't put off your travel plans because you are afraid of failure. Yes, everyone will be older and wiser in a few years, but life happens, circumstances constantly change, and you never know if this travel opportunity will circle back around. Take those vacations with the little kids or the angsty teens. Make the memories, spend the money, and know that the kids won't be kids forever. Remember, parts of your vacation may flop, but other parts will be amazing. In the end, you will likely be so glad you went for it and traveled with your kids.
Family Vacation Memories to Cherish
Travel is all about the adventure of life and being together in a wonderful new time and space. Use tips to reduce stress, but know that the greatest advice you can receive is to be in the moment and try to enjoy your family vacation no matter what. Kids won't remember every detail of every vacation they took during their childhood, but they'll treasure the memories of how they felt spending time together as a family in a fun-filled environment.
