The excitement started to grow and we decided to theorize what the coveted 2021 version of “Ex” would look like.

Of course, in keeping with the three-quarter-ton foundation used from ’00 -’05, this version will also be based on the Super Duty platform. And of course, Ford will offer another 2022 Ford Excursion Diesel option, right?

Just when the SUV market was about to explode in the United States, Excursion came and pulled people looking for a heavy-duty three-line passenger carrier.

Arriving in the fall of 1999 as the ’00 ‘model, the Ex ruled out the GM Suburban, boasting the longest (226 inches), widest (80 inches), and tallest (77 inches) longest SUV ever produced by the Big Three.

It can also pull 10,000 pounds thanks to the Duty-ton Super Duty frame, suspension, axles (a solid front on the 4×4 model), and of course the Class IV hitch that has become standard.

Now, some 15 years after Ford Excursion 2022 production was discontinued in the US (a limited number of ’06 models were produced for Mexico), GM has unmatched control in the large SUV segment.

But how long will GM’s dominance last? Given the recent news about Ford trying to trademark the Ford Excursion 2022 name, it seems to many that carmaker Dearborn is once again attracted to a piece of cake that is undoubtedly very tantalizing.

After all, a new Suburban with all its bells and whistles could easily fetch over $ 80,000.

2022 Ford Excursion Coming Back

Is Ford Bringing Back The Excursion Here comes the latest Ford trademark filing updating the Ford Excursion name for “motor vehicles, namely: pick-up trucks, electric vehicles, sports vehicles, off-road vehicles, and structural parts thereof?”

This is the second Ford trademark news this week. Lincoln also trademarks the name eGlide. What does this mean? Is Ford planning to bring back the new Ford Excursion SUV? Will it be based on the new Ford Super Duty? We don’t have an official answer to this yet.

However, the giant SUV Ford Super Duty Excursion is in my opinion impossible. Ford already sells the Ford Expedition and Max Expedition for a long wheelbase. Is The Ford Excursion Coming Back This full-size SUV competes directly with the Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Suburban, and others. If not a giant truck-based SUV, then what’s the next Excursion like?

What if the future of the 2022 Ford Excursion was an electric full-size SUV with a focus on off-road capability? GM is bringing back the Hummer brand name in an all-electric form. Perhaps, Ford is considering something similar for the next Excursion? We don’t know for sure. As soon as we hear more about this subject – we’ll let you know.

The 2022 Ford Excursion used to be a large body-on-frame SUV. It uses the Ford Super Duty chassis and shares the powertrains with the big trucks.

Big, luxury trucks and SUVs are back – like it or not. With General Motors resurrecting the Hummer as GMC’s electric vehicle and Jeep reportedly clearing the Grand Wagoneer name for its flagship SUV, the Blue Oval appears to be digging into its archives and bringing back the 2022 Ford Excursion from the early to mid-2000s.

That is if Ford’s recent trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office is something to follow. Filed on April 24, the app attempts to use the name for “Motorized vehicles, that is, automobiles, pick-up trucks, electric vehicles, sports vehicles, off-road vehicles, and their structural parts.”

Indeed, that’s quite a wide potential use for the name. Nevertheless, it’s no surprise that Ford is pinning the moniker onto a large EV truck or SUV aiming to take on the upcoming GMC Hummer. That said, Ford may be simply filing a trademark to protect the name from falling into the proverbial embrace of a competing car manufacturer.

First introduced for the 2000 model year, the 2022 Ford Excursion sits atop the already large Expeditions in Ford’s SUV lineup. Is Ford Excursion Coming Back While Expedition shares its main components with the F-150 pickup, the New Excursion uses its most important parts from the larger Super Duty Ford F-Series truck.

With three engines available (including the V-10 and diesel V-8), the giant new Ford Excursion offers the size and towing traction its pickup counterpart offers with a wagon body that allows three rows of seats and plenty of (covered) space for miscellaneous items.

The model was short-lived, and in the middle of the decade, Ford discontinued large SUVs. However, Excursion made a splash in its short life and continues to gather fans who appreciate its heavy-duty foundation and its ability to carry people.

Only time will tell if Ford brings this mighty SUV back from the dead, but given the company plans to reintroduce the Bronco as a 2021 model year vehicle, it wouldn’t surprise us to see the Excursion name return to the company’s model line before the end of the decade.

2022 Ford Excursion Engine Specs

Just as the original Excursion was available with three different power generators (the 5.4L V8 Triton, 6.8L V10 Triton, and 7.3L Power Stroke V8 diesel), a trio of engines could be on the table now.

If you want to make it big, it’s best to try your hardest. In the past, Ford offered a 7.3L Power Stroke V8 diesel engine as its premium engine option, which delivers the best possible fuel economy, torque, and driving capability with or without the load behind it.

It would make a lot of sense to offer compression ignition again, right? This time the 6.7L Power Stroke is going to get the nod – an ultra-quiet high-pressure common-rail burner that, ironically, delivers more than twice the horsepower and torque generated by the 7.3L Power Stroke in 2000 (475) hp and 1,050 lb-ft vs. 235 hp and 500 lb-ft).

For truckers, it can be hard to give up on a basic engine (remember, this is a 6.2L V8 in our imaginary world) knowing that the 430hp 7.3L option is on the table.

The 445 ci gas V8 is not only the largest and most powerful in its class but its traditional overhead-valve, cam-in-block design is a nice respite from all the above cam action we’ve seen Ford over the years (think 1996).

The cast-iron block with a four-bolt power source, aluminum head with the wedge-shaped combustion chamber, and hydraulic roller lifters with variable valve timing and a single phaser have made the 7.3L gas well received so far in the Super Duty segment.

Just as the 7.3L gas and 6.7L Power Stroke benefit from the new 10-speed TorqShift automatic transmission in their Super Duty iteration, the same marriage will be accepted (and most likely) at the Excursion.

Called the 10R140, the first gear has a very low ratio of 4.61: 1, the seventh gear serves as a direct gear, and three overdrive gears are available, including a top gear ratio of 0.632: 1 (vs. 0.674: 1 on six speeds before 6R140) for fuel economy optimal.

While we’d like to see the new megalodon SUV embellished with the Dana M275 rear axle available on the F-350 and F-250 equipped with Ford’s HD crane package, the odds of Ford using 10.5 Sterling are much more likely.

Granted, the 10.5-inch ring gear axle is proven and tough enough in ¾ tonne applications, but it’s the same axle used on the original New Excursion 20 years ago.

Ford, if you’re listening (and planning to keep the roots of the 2022 Ford Excursion generosity intact), give us the M275, with a 10.8-inch ring gear, 4-inch diameter axle tube, and a 36-spline shaft (in comparison, the smaller using a 3.5-inch shaft tube and a 35-spline shaft).

The front coil-sprung suspension on the modern Super Duty has often been criticized for its tough, stiff ride, especially (and predictably) when empty. These reviews are usually prepared by car people.

Trust me, in terms of ride quality, the same basic suspension system Ford uses on its trucks as the ’05 is light years ahead of the leaf spring front ends found on all 4×4 ’00 -’05 models.

This time (and provided it is based on the Super Duty platform), a full box frame will also be standard equipment under the new Ford Excursion.

We like the 2022 Ford Excursion model, which is a heavy-duty Class 2 truck based on the F250 Super Duty pickup. The 3/4 ton chassis features front and rear axles and engine choices include the exciting 5.4L Triton V-8, 6.8L Triton V-10, and 7.3L Power Stroke V-8 Turbo Diesel.

2022 Ford Excursion Comes Back with a 7.3 V8 Engine

The 2022 Ford Excursion will be the largest SUV you can find in the market. While most other full-size models are based on half-ton pickups, this one is going to be built on the same platform as the F-250 Super Duty truck. Ford is expanding the lineup and electrification is not the only hot topic. Now, we have Excursion back in the rumor mill, and let’s check what the vehicle is going to offer.

One thing is sure, the 2022 Excursion is about to become the largest vehicle in the class. Currently, there are Chevy Suburban and Ford Expedition Max, with lengths over 220 inches. Back in the time, Excursion was the biggest SUV in the market. Now, we expect to see it at least 230 inches long. For such a huge SUV, the company needs a lot of power. A brand-new V8 is there to offer 430 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. On the other hand, Ford is also well-known for its Powerstroke diesel units. We doubt that engineers will go with a V8.

The Super Duty truck lineup is new. The carmaker recently updated F-250 and F-350 models and the upcoming 2022 Ford Excursion is going to borrow design solutions from its closest siblings. The SUV is not going to have the competition since only General Motors is making LWB vehicles. Toyota and Nissan are also in the full-size SUV segment, but neither of these Japanese companies is offering a heavy-duty truck. On the other hand, Jeep Grand Wagoneer is about to be launched, and FCA could make a special version based on the Ram 2500 Power Wagon truck.

Expectations

The SUV market is growing. COVID-19 outburst slowed things down, but companies are recovering. Many of them decided to put all the projects on hold, and it might be a reason why the Excursion is not coming even in 2021. Still, if this huge rig happens, it will be worth of waiting.

The SUV should be about 230 inches long, with the largest cargo space in the class. Extra power and towing capacity come thanks to the huge units under the hood. Raptor version is not going to happen, and the best off-road features we might get should be the Tremor. This package is available with the F-250 truck and it was supposed to be a rival to the Ram Power Wagon.

Powertrains

In the search for the perfect drivetrain for the 2022 Ford Excursion, we narrowed the selection to a few V8 units. The new 7.3-liter engine is the most likely option. Even before its arrival, some experts claimed it will be the powerplant for the 2022 Ford Excursion. Well, the first step is done – the engine is here. Now, we will see if the SUV comes as well. The unit is one of the drivetrains for the Super Duty class. With 430 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, it provides enough energy for the toughest challenges. Well, don’t expect a generous gas mileage, since the SUV is going to be the heaviest model Ford ever produced. Neither Expedition is returning a breath-taking mpg rating.

An old 6.2-l V8 is also an option, but it is going to be dropped for the F-250 soon. Still, with 375 hp and 430 lb-ft, it can be still a good optional powerplant. Ford is keen on turbocharged units, but there is no way a V6 turbo can meet expectations from Excursion buyers. Even Expedition is the only full-size SUV without an eight-cylinder mill.

2022 Ford Excursion Diesel

The 2022 Ford Excursion Diesel is not going to be a surprise at all. The company is active in this segment and there are two options the SUV can get. A lighter variant is a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder oil burner we can find under the hood of the F-150 pickup. With 260 hp and 450 lb-ft, it might be a good option. But, for the Super Duty class, that is not enough.

On the other hand, a 6.7-liter turbo-eight is a monster. With 450 hp and 1,000+ lb-ft of torque, it will be definitely the most capable drivetrain in the SUV segment. But, this energy is used for heavy-duty towing and we doubt anyone needs this kind of vehicle to haul 30,000 pounds. Trucks are a way better option if you are looking for such potential. However, this might be an engine for bragging and extreme off-road adventures.

2022 Ford Expedition

A family hauler that can do it all.

Starting inside, where changes are most easily noticed, with a new dash design that allows for a much bigger infotainment setup. A 12-inch touchscreen is now standard, with a 15.5-inch vertical tablet similar to the Mustang Mach-E’s available, as is a fully digital gauge display. Our moderately outfitted XLT stuck with the standard gauge package with traditional analog dials bookending an info-packed 8-inch productivity screen. Some materials have been upgraded, and there’s a revised control layout below the touchscreen, as well as on the center console.  

Even as one of the lesser trim grades, XLT comes with the trailer tow package, Ford Co-Pilot 360, and seating for 8 with 3-row climate control and power-folding 3rd row. Heated and cooled seats, heated steering wheel, and power liftgate can be added cost effectively with optional XLT Equipment Group packages.  

…36 cubic-ft. behind the 3rd row, 79.6 behind the 2nd, and a max of 121.5 cubic-ft.  

Our XLT tester sports the carryover 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 which gains 5-ponies; now outputting 380-horsepower and 470 lb-ft. of torque. But, more significantly, there are now 2 higher output versions available, 400-horsepower for Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum trims: and 440 in either of two new Expedition trims for ’22, Stealth Performance and Timberline.   

The new Timberline series is the most intriguing to us with a multitude of unique exterior elements, along with added ground clearance, 33-inch all-terrain tires, and a 2-speed transfer case to make it the most off-road capable Expedition yet.  

Regardless of power output or trim, all Expeditions work with a 10-speed automatic transmission; and maximum trailer tow is 9,300-lbs. with rear-wheel-drive and the Heavy Duty Trailer Towing Package. Optional 4-wheel-drive is Ford’s Control Trac system, with an electronic limited slip differential available. So, with standard power and 4-wheel-drive, we rolled our XLT tester into Mason Dixon Dragway. 

Exterior updates for ’22 are very minor; mostly just refreshed lighting and new grilles for select trims. Government Fuel Economy Ratings for a 4X4 XLT Max are 16-City, 21-Highway, and 18-Combined; we averaged a spot-on 18.2 miles-per-gallon of Regular. That’s still a below average Energy Impact Score; with annual consumption of 16.5-barrels of oil and yearly CO2 emissions of 8.2-tons.

With most of the SUVs we’ve tested recently pushing 6 figures, the Expedition seems like a relative bargain, starting at $56,315.  XLTs start at $60,380, with just 2-grand on top of that for the MAX, making it a lot of truck-based SUV for the money.

The latest Ford Expedition is indeed better than ever. And, with more options than before, it’s easy to build the perfect fit for your big utility needs. But no matter which Expedition you choose, you’ll get a great family hauler that can basically do it all.

The upcoming 2022 Ford Excursion is still not official. This is an interesting model because you can find plenty of rumors about it. We already wrote about the Excursion SUV and its possible comeback. It didn’t happen and now its return is questionable once again. Excursion is the largest SUV ever, based on the F-250 heavy-duty truck. It was firstly introduced by Ford in 1999 and it lasted for six years.

Now, reviving older nameplates is a popular move by every established manufacturer. Whatsoever, Ford is about to introduce the Bronco model, which was also a big hit back in the days. And just like Bronco, Excursion will have to depart from its original roots, in order to be competitive. However, some things will remain, most importantly, its large dimensions.

2022 Excursion Dimensions

The new version of this iconic SUV will have to be different. This means the 2022 Ford Excursion won’t wear the same design as its predecessor. Instead, Blue Oval will deliver something completely new, in line with modern trends. One thing cannot change and that’s SUV’s size. It is the main reason why the Excursion nameplate was so popular.

This is not a problem as most of the automakers are canceling the productions of regular cars and smaller vehicles in general. While it is too early to talk about exact dimensions, have in mind that the previous Excursion was 137 inches long. To compare, the current Chevrolet Suburban is 134 inches long. Some sources are even writing about 140 inches long 2022 Excursion.

Interior Details

On the inside, the 2022 Ford Excursion will take a more modern approach. However, the highlight is cabin space as Excursion will offer plenty of it. With such impressive dimensions, Excursion will be the most spacious SUV ever without any doubt. Because of that, we expect to see three generous rows of seats with ample legroom and headroom. There will be room for eight passengers, as before. Chevrolet Suburban offers 145 cubic feet of cargo area and the new Excursion SUV will offer even more.

It is too early to talk about exact figures, but Ford will deliver it all. The dashboard will be modern and it will look closer to the dash inside the current Expedition SUV. We are waiting for more details regarding the list of standard features, optional features, upholstery, and much more.

Excursion SUV Will Offer Gasoline and Diesel Engines

As we mentioned, Excursion SUV is based on the Ford F-250 Super Duty truck. New 2022 Ford Excursion will probably follow the same path as its predecessor. Because of that, this large SUV will ride on a 7.3-liter V8 engine. This engine is currently available in the Super Duty lineup and Ford says it is the most powerful gasoline engine in the heavy-duty segment.

Russia’s BN-800 refuelled with mox: full mox core planned for 2022

The first full refuelling of Russia’s BN-800 fast reactor at unit 4 of the Beloyarsk NPP with only uranium-plutonium mixed oxide (mox) fuel was completed during the recent scheduled maintenance outage, fuel company TVEL (part of Rosatom) announced on 24 February. The unit, which was shut down on 8 January, has been reconnected to the grid and has resumed electricity production. The first 18 serial mox fuel assemblies were loaded into the reactor in January 2020, and another 160 fuel assemblies have now been added to them. Thus, the BN-800 core is now one-third filled with innovative fuel and in future only mox fuel will be loaded into the reactor.

“Beloyarsk NPP is now one step closer to implementation of the strategic direction for the development of the nuclear industry - the creation of a new technological platform based on a closed nuclear fuel cycle,” said Ivan Sidorov, Director of the Beloyarsk NPP. “The use of mox fuel will make it possible to involve in fuel manufacture the isotope of uranium that is not currently used. This will increase the fuel base of the nuclear power industry tenfold. In addition, the BN-800 reactor can reuse used nuclear fuel from other NPPs and minimise radioactive waste by “afterburning” long-lived isotopes from them. Taking into account the planned schedule, we will be able to switch to a core with a full load of mox fuel in 2022.”

The fuel assemblies were manufactured at the Mining and Chemical Combine (MCC, Zheleznogorsk, Krasnoyarsk Territory). Unlike enriched uranium, which is traditional for nuclear power, the raw materials for the production of mox fuel pellets are plutonium oxide produced in power reactors and depleted uranium oxide (obtained by defluorination of depleted uranium hexafluoride - DUHF, the secondary "tailings" of the enrichment plant.

“In parallel with loading the BN-800 core with mox fuel, Rosatom specialists are continuing to develop technologies for the production of such fuel at the MCC,” said Alexander Ugryumov, vice president for research, development and quality at TVEL. “In particular, the production of fresh fuel using high-background plutonium extracted from the irradiated fuel of VVER reactors has been mastered: all technological operations are fully automated and are performed without the presence of personnel in the immediate vicinity. The first 20 mox-FAs incorporating high-background plutonium have already been manufactured and passed acceptance tests, and they are planned to be loaded in 2022. Advanced technologies for recycling nuclear materials and refabrication of nuclear fuel in the future will make it possible to process irradiated fuel instead of storing it, as well as to reduce the amount of high-level waste generated.”

Serial production of mox fuel began at the end of 2018 at MCC. To achieve this, broad industry cooperation was organised under the coordination and scientific leadership of TVEL, which supplies the mox-fuel to Beloyarsk NPP. Initially, the BN-800 reactor was launched with a hybrid core, partly equipped with uranium fuel produced by Mashinostroitelny Zavod in Elektrostal (Moscow Region), and partly with experimental mox assemblies manufactured at the Research Institute of Atomic Reactors (NIIAR) in Dimitrovgrad, Ulyanovsk region).
