Wonders of the Nile: Cairo to Luxor River Cruise Itinerary

This 10-night cruise explores the world’s most famous waterway. Discover the River Nile’s remarkable history and culture with incredible sights and iconic landmarks at every bend in the river. Relax in five-star comfort and luxury as expert tours bring Egyptian civilisation to life, creating a treasure trove of memories.

Arrive in Cairo and step on board the MS Mövenpick Darakum.

Leave Cairo for Giza and see the Great Pyramids, three of the world’s most iconic structures, with the opportunity to go inside two of the pyramids and also the third, the Great Pyramid of Cheops, which does have a limit on visitor numbers. Guests can also see the Sphinx, the world’s largest free-standing structure near the pyramids. Visit the Grand Egyptian Museum, a complete contrast to the ancient architecture surrounding it. This modern, purpose-built structure was designed to house all the artefacts that previously resided in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo in an accessible location near the pyramids. The museum also contains treasures from private collections.

Saqqara & Coptic Museum

Head south to the smaller pyramids at Saqqara, home to Egypt’s oldest pyramid, the Step Pyramid of Djoser, and an excellent opportunity to study the construction of these incredible monuments. Saqqara is also the largest archaeological site in Egypt. In the afternoon, guests explore Old Cairo’s Christian history with a visit to the famous ‘Hanging Church’ built over a gateway to the Romanera Babylon fortress and the Coptic Museum, housing the world’s most extensive collection of Christian artefacts.

Nile Cruising

Depart Cairo on your luxury cruiser and enjoy perfect views of this ancient city before sailing past canals, small farms, and plantations. Guests can enjoy some on-board lectures from expert commentators providing fascinating insight into ancient and modern Egypt. Later that day, the ship arrives at the small town of Beni Suef.

Full Day Sail

Watch the world go by as your vessel departs Beni Suef and glides along the ancient landscape of the Nile Valley. In the afternoon, arrive in Minya, where the cruiser moors for two nights.

  • Beni Hassan Tombs

The day’s first visit is to Tuna El Gebel, the necropolis of Hermopolis, sacred to the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian equivalent, Thoth. Explore the tomb of Petosiris and the ancient catacombs, once home to thousands of mummified ibis, ibis eggs, and baboons in a dedicated baboon sarcophagus. These animals were sacred to the god Thoth. Later that day, there is a tour of the tombs at Beni Hassan, which afford magnificent views up and down the Nile River.

Today, visit Amarna, the capital of the Pharaoh Akhenaten and his queen, Nefertiti. The tour includes a visit to Akhenaten’s tomb. Lunch is on board the ship with an afternoon sail that takes in Egypt’s Coptic monasteries before arriving in Assyut, where the vessel moors overnight.

Continue southwards on the Nile with a chance to relax and take in the beautiful views and riverside communities as you head towards Abydos.

Abydos is one of Egypt’s most magical and mysterious sites, a pilgrimage destination for thousands of years, and one of Egypt’s most important archaeological locations. Visit the Great Temple of Seti dedicated to the cult of Osiris, God of the Dead, with its famous Gallery of the Kings and some fascinating hieroglyphs. The ship then sails to Qena, where it moors overnight.

Visit the Temple of Hathor, one of the best-preserved temple complexes in Upper Egypt. Completed in the Roman period, the temple is constructed in the style of the Pharaohs and deities of ancient Egypt with a fabulous astronomical ceiling and rooftop sanctuaries which were used for solar rituals. Enjoy stunning views across lush countryside towards the hills of the Western Desert. Later in the day, sail the short distance to Luxor.

Disembark in Luxor, a chance to explore two of Egypt’s most famous monuments, the Temples at Luxor and Karnak, plus the royal tombs of the Valley of the Kings on the west bank of the Nile.

Wonders of the Nile River Cruise Review

“This was our first cruise outside Europe, and it did not disappoint. The ship was smaller than we are used to, but this was a real plus as there was loads of space and far fewer passengers. The cruise is less intensive than European cruises, with numerous daily tours and excursions. On this trip, two or three pure sailing days made for a lovely sandwich of interest and excitement, followed by some peaceful sailing time before more port stops. The ship is very well-appointed and comfortable, a great way to see the Nile and Egypt’s iconic ancient civilisation.”

Wonders of the Nile River Cruise FAQ

Find answers to some of the most common questions about river cruising here.

riviera travel wonders of the nile

Isn’t Egypt really hot in the summer? How does this affect the scheduled tours?

Most tours start early in the morning to avoid the heat in the central part of the day. Wearing appropriate clothing is helpful for comfort levels, so long, loose garments made of cotton, and don’t forget to take a hat or sunshade. Cabins and suites are air-conditioned on board the ship, and there are shaded areas on the Sun Deck where you can relax away from the full power of the sun when you return from a tour.

riviera travel wonders of the nile

I have restricted mobility. Is this going to impact my cruise?

Most shore excursions are walking tours, and guests should be aware that many historical sites we visit have uneven footing and pathways due to their age. Some of the tombs have steep descents with long flights of narrow steps. Your friendly booking expert can discuss this with you when you make your reservation.

riviera travel wonders of the nile

Do I need a visa for the Wonders of the Nile River Cruise?

Passengers need a valid passport, which is in date, and a visa for this cruise. A visa can be obtained from the government website, where there is also the latest advice on travel to Egypt. When you make a reservation, full details of how to apply for a visa will be sent with your booking confirmation. Always make sure you apply early enough, as there can be delays in processing visas during busy holiday periods.

People that have booked this tour have also searched for the following:

Day 1 : Fly To Cairo

Location: cairo, accommodation name: ms mövenpick darakum, meals included: dinner.

You should arrive at the airport to take your direct flight to Cairo. After our late evening arrival, we transfer to our home for the next 10 nights, the MS Mövenpick Darakum.

Day 2 : The Pyramids, Sphinx & Egyptian Museum

Location: giza district, meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Today we drive out of the city towards the Giza plateau for our first close-up view of the Great Pyramids. The truly gigantic size of the three main pyramids only becomes fully apparent when they tower above you in all their majesty. For the more adventurous, entry into the pyramids is available at extra cost payable locally, but for the Great Pyramid of Cheops there’s a daily limit to the number of visitors and there’s no guarantee of an entry. A little further down the hill is the mighty Sphinx, the world’s largest free-standing sculpture. King ‘Tut’s’ tomb held so many treasures that it took 10 years to examine, photograph, catalogue and finally remove all 5,398 of them. The collection forms the centrepiece of the Egyptian Museum, without question one of the world’s greatest museums, a treasure-house overflowing with artefacts of remarkable ancient craftsmanship, ranging from the mundane to the mystical. The famous Royal Mummy room may be entered, upon payment of a small additional fee.

Day 3 : Saqqara & Coptic Museum

Location: saqqarah.

We head south to the pyramids at the necropolis of Saqqara. Soon the lush fields give way to barren desert and we see the giant ‘step’ pyramid looming above the palms. Built using smaller blocks than the Great Pyramids at Giza, it’s easy to see how the architecture of pyramid-building evolved from a simple square flat-topped mound upon which similar smaller mounds were added. This afternoon we’ll explore Old Cairo’s Christian history with a visit to the ‘Hanging Church’, built over a gateway to the Romanera Babylon fortress. We continue to the Coptic Museum and the nearby Ben Ezra synagogue, said to be where the Pharaoh’s daughter found Moses in his basket amongst the reeds.

Day 4 : Full Day Sail

Location: beni suef.

This morning our ship starts its long journey out of Cairo. As we leave the city behind and pass small farms, canals and plantations of date palms along the way, you’ll see how productive this land has been for so many generations. Enjoy the first of a couple of fascinating lectures on both modern and ancient Egypt. In the afternoon we arrive at the small town of Beni Suef where we moor overnight.

Day 5 : Full Day Sail

Location: menia governorate.

After a sumptuous breakfast buffet, relax under one on one of the many comfortable shaded sun loungers or Balinese-style canopied day-beds as the unchanged landscape of the Nile Valley slips by. This afternoon we arrive in Minya where we will moor for two nights.

Day 6 : Beni Hassan Tombs

Location: beni hasan.

After breakfast, set out with a visit to Tuna El Gebel, the necropolis of Hermopolis, sacred to the Greek god Hermes and his Egyptian counterpart Thoth, god of writing and wisdom. Explore the tomb of Petosiris and the catacombs which once held thousands of mummified ibis and baboons. After lunch on board, we continue with a tour of the tombs at Beni Hassan, with wonderful views across the valley.

Day 7 : Amarna

Location: amarna.

This morning we arrive in Amarna, site of the short-lived capital of the Pharaoh Akhenaten and his queen Nefertiti. We’ll visit Akhenaten’s tomb, as well as those of some of his courtiers. We return to our ship in time for lunch and continue our journey, sailing by Egypt’s Coptic monasteries. We moor in Assyut overnight.

Day 8 : Full Day Sail

Location: abydos.

Today we continue our journey southwards, with a full day’s cruising, ideal to relax after the busy last couple of days and before seeing the monuments and temples of the second part of our journey.

Day 9 : Abydos

Abydos remains one of ancient Egypt’s most mysterious sites, with the Great Temple of Seti I as its centrepiece. Dedicated to the cult of Osiris, god of the dead, Abydos was a pilgrimage centre for thousands of years. The temple is known for its Gallery of the Kings, which lists all the pharaohs, as well as some hieroglyphs which look like modern machines! We sail on to Qena where we moor overnight.

Day 10 : Dendera

Location: dandarah.

The temple of Hathor is one of the most complete and best-preserved in all of Egypt. Hathor was the Egyptian goddess of love, beauty, joy and healing, and her temple, although only completed in Roman times, nevertheless follows the architecture and style of much older temples. We sail the short distance to Luxor where we moor overnight.

Day 11 : Return Flight

Location: luxor governorate, meals included: breakfast.

An early start today as anyone opting for the shorter eleven-day itinerary will be transferred to Luxor airport for the flight home, via Cairo.

Reviews of this Operator

This review is for the....

This review is for the italian Lake Como trip Aug 1-8 Wow what a trip. Riviera from start to finish were excellent the booking and help line answering questions were very good and clear. The travel booklet you get is laid out that it is simple to read and follow with step by step info from booking in to flights to meeting the guides. Our guide Matt Purse was just the best guide and real credit to Riviera with his knowledge and straight forward approach to running the trips. Matt kept us informed and told us all the sort of info you want to know without going over the top....This chap should teach other reps ..thank you so much. The coaches they use are all clean and well equipped with usb chargers and have aircon. The places chosen to visit were well researched even down to where coaches park or drop you off. The Bernina Express was the highlight for our family and matts photo tip was welcomed. The only down point was the hotel,a little dated and evening meal in main restuarant was a bit of a let down. I think we were lucky with our room on level 7 and with balcony as the walls are very thin and noise travels. We would book again with riviera

I have been on three...

I have been on three trips with Riviera Travel so far, with two more booked during 2024. Highly recommended. Excellent tour guides. Great program of visits. Great hotels used.

We would go again in a heartbeat

Oh my goodness, what a relief it was to actually get away! Full marks to all at Riviera for keeping us up to date before our trip and for the help so cheerfully and patiently given with the extra admin that Covid brought our way. We felt totally safe with the measures taken on board, thank you very much for this. Without exception, Staff were fantastic and our every need was attended to. The additional Covid testing ran smoothly, organised by our Riviera Reps. The guided tours were most interesting: the guides very knowledgeable and more importantly, interesting to listen to. We loved this trip and would do it again in a heartbeat. Thank you again Riviera, you were FAB!

Second escorted tour with this...

Second escorted tour with this company. Did 5 days in Iceland tour. Everything went smoothly, excellent tour guide, Per. Extremely knowledgeable and interesting guy. Very friendly too. Highly recommend. Just let down by the room given at the hotel, but I guess the travel company doesn't have control over this.

Riviera South Africa tour - awesome

Riviera have amazing holidays and tours to choose from. The one we chose was South Africa and wow! It turned out to be our best trip ever - incredible memories we will never forget. We’ve been all over the world which was because of all our experiences, this one was awesome. The organisation of the holiday, the guide and the travel was e cells that. The choice of hotels, meals, restaurants, trips was absolutely fantastic - very good quality and character - nothing bland or boring! The Riviera guide was permanently with us along with a South Africa guide and they were both extremely friendly, professional, informative and you could ask any questions you want! I would massively recommend this holiday/trip and when you’ve experienced it, you realise how reasonable the price is. We reflect on this trip a lot and thank you Riviera for giving us such a wonderful experience.

Rhine Christmas markets cruise

Just completed a 5 day trip on the Rhine. Our first river cruise and a tester for future cruises. The boat was well appointed and the cabin and public areas were spotlessly clean. The staff were attentive and contributed to the very relaxed atmosphere on the boat. The quality of the food surpassed that which we have experiened on sea cruises in recent years. I have written little because it was a faultless experience. We have booked a further cruise (in France) on the basis of our experience.

My first cruise and I...

My first cruise and I couldn’t have done better than my recent Seine River cruise. Carmen the tour organiser was excellent and always willing to go the extra mile to sort out any problems. The crew were amazing , friendly and helpful, the captain was great when explaining the controls on the bridge. Everything was very clean, food truly delicious and the pianist a delight and I was able to indulge my passion for dancing. My fellow guests were a delight and I made many new friends. Thank you Riviera

An amazing trustworthy company.

By the law of averages, there will occasionally be dramas with holidays when hundreds of people are on a package trip. It’s a fact of life. However a true rating measure of a travel company is how they look after the customer in these circumstances. Riviera Travel are, in my opinion, totally trustworthy and will do whatever they can within their power when there is a problem. In fact, to a degree that is actually above and beyond the call of duty. I would thoroughly recommend them, and look forward to our next Riviera holiday in 2022.

My 3rd Riviera trip within...

My 3rd Riviera trip within a year and I wasn't disappointed 😁 This time it was https://www.rivieratravel.co.uk/escorted-tours/southern-india-coastal-route-solo-travellers This trip, although not cheap, it really offers exceptional value for money as you see a lot of Tamil Nadu and Kerela, stay in fantastic hotels, excellent breakfasts every day as well as some lunches and dinners also included. George Bareham, our "Tour Manager" was brilliant, very professional, but also friendly and diligent. Satheeshan, our local guide was helpful and picked me up antibiotics when I got ill, he was a nice chap, if (for my taste) went on a bit and used 20 words when 1 would suffice. Mr Sweeny, our coach driver was fantastic, really professional and an exceptionally good driver. His assistant, Murgon wad a delight, always smiling and attentive. This is a full on trip, early morning starts and quite a packed itinerary, but still leaving time to laze around some brilliant hotel swimming pools. Only a couple of suggestions to improve the holiday. More shopping time in Cochin and change carriers from Etihad who, unfortunately aren't the excellent airline they used to be. But, will I use Riviera Travel again - Yes 😁

Presently in Croatia staying at...

Presently in Croatia staying at Arauana Hotel, supposedly a 4 star property, but wouldn't give it any star rating. Rooms are small and dirty. Wallpaper blistering. Meals served in a shed like lean-to. Food like warm, greasy and always self service. Second holiday with Riviera this year and neither at standard advertised. Have travelled with them previously and everything was fine, but standards have really dropped. Have booked a holiday with them next year and now dreading it. Certainly don't provide the standard advertised. We have never stayed in such a hovel and have visited youngsters in back packers accommodation which was far better than this supposedly 4 star accommodation. There are no indoor bars or lounges only a shed as a so called restaurant. Absolutely disgusting. Won't be boking with them again

What's Included

  • The price of this holiday is per person, based on two people sharing a twin cabin. Sole occupancy is available at the relevant supplement. The price includes:
  • Fourteen nights’ accommodation on the MS Movenpick Darakum
  • Daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Scheduled flights to Cairo and from Luxor via Cairo to the UK
  • Transfers and all internal coach travel
  • The services of a Riviera Travel tour manager

  • Visa not included.

You should arrive at the airport to take your direct flight to Cairo. After our late evening arrival, we transfer to our home for the next 14 nights, the MS Mövenpick Darakum.

We continue to the Coptic Museum.

After a sumptuous breakfast buffet, relax under one on one of the many comfortable shaded sun loungers or Balinese-style canopied day-beds as the unchanged landscape of the Nile Valley slips by. This afternoon we arrive in Minya where we will moor for two nights.

Today we continue our journey southwards, with a full day’s cruising, ideal to relax after the busy last couple of days and before seeing the monuments and temples of the second part of our journey.

Anyone staying on for the full itinerary to Aswan will continue the tour crossing the Nile to the West Bank for the Valley of the Kings! We also visit Howard Carter’s house which has been beautifully preserved and is next to the newlyopened replica of King Tut’s tomb. Our tour ends at the mortuary temple of Hatshepsut, the first female pharaoh, with its stunning colonnaded terraces. We return to our ship at lunchtime and the rest of the day is at leisure.

This morning we visit the Temple of Karnak. The astounding Hypostyle Hall is the most aweinspiring part of this vast complex, said to be the largest religious centre of the ancient world. We also visit the Temple of Luxor. After lunch we set sail for Edfu where we moor overnight.

The temple at Kom Ombo is unusual in that it’s dedicated to two gods, Horus and Sobek, the crocodile. The temple had a lake with sacred crocodiles and many mummies for them have been found nearby. We sail to Aswan and moor overnight.

This morning is our last full day in Egypt and we visit one of modern Egypt’s greatest achievements – the Aswan High Dam. We continue to the temple of Philae, which had to be rescued from the rising waters of Lake Nasser. After a visit to the Nubian museum, we take to the water on a felucca sail as the sun sets in the west, to Kitchener Island, which the general converted to a botanical park.

Early this morning we make our way to Aswan airport for the return flight, via Cairo, back to the UK after unique and truly fascinating tour.

Giza, Egypt

A true standout is Giza, which boasts the Great Pyramids – certainly a sight to snap a photo with.

Crane your neck to admire these three gigantic pyramids and if you want to wander inside (entry at an extra cost payable locally) you can discover unique passageways and burial chambers.

Further down the hill, you can admire the impressive Sphinx which – fun fact – is actually the world’s largest free-standing sculpture.

The Egyptian Museum is also nestled in Giza, where you can observe an array of ancient artefacts – make sure you visit the famed Royal Mummy room (for a small additional fee).

Tuna El Gebel

Also known as ‘The City of the Dead’, Tuna El Gebel is more fun than it sounds – trust us.

The vast majority of the buildings belong to the historical period between 300 BC and 300 AD and feature a range of intriguing temples and tombs.

Tuna El Gebel was the necropolis for the city of Hermopolis, and, past this ancient village, which was sacred to the Greek god Hermes, you can find a range of tombs and catacombs of those who once resided there as well as sacred animals.

Have a wander around and marvel at the level of preservation and imagine what the lives of these residents were like.

Known as one of the most mysterious sites in Egypt, Abydos, was a place of pilgrimage for Egyptians who wanted to be buried as close as possible to the tomb of Osiris in Egypt.

The god of the underworld was one of Egypt's most important deities.

You can admire the Great Temple of Seti I, dedicated to the important Pharaoh, which acts as the main attraction in Abydos as well as the centre for pilgrimage.

Make sure to explore inside the centre of the temple and find the Gallery of the Kings, where you can read a list of all the pharaohs and hieroglyphs of the kings themselves.

Allow yourself to be truly taken back in time with a visit to Dendera, which boasts one of the best-preserved temples (the Temple of Hathor) in the entirety of Egypt.

You can also enjoy the included excursion to Abydos and Dendera temples with Riviera to discover these fascinating buildings.

The Temple of Hathor shows plenty of influence from the Egyptian, Greek and Roman rulers, see if you can spot where this influence changes throughout the temple.

Discover the ornate chamber at the top of the temple that was used to greet the rising sun as well as the Dendera Zodiac, believed to be the only complete map of the ancient Egyptian sky.

You are guaranteed to feel like a history buff by the end of your cruise with Riviera Travel to Egypt, full of fascinating facts to share with your family and friends.

Best Nile cruises

riviera travel wonders of the nile

Nick Boulos

Wednesday September 6 2023, 11:00am

Sailing through timeless landscapes on a cruise is the best way to see the River Nile. It’s one of the richest destinations on earth and has long enticed and seduced travellers, from pharaohs and prophets to modern-day adventurers, to say nothing of fictional Agatha Christie characters. Sailing on the world’s longest river, which flows through 11 African countries for 4,100 miles before spilling out into the Mediterranean, is a breathtaking experience, and there are more cruise lines plying the Nile than ever.

So which one to take? The majority of itineraries cover the Upper Nile — a section of the river in southern Egypt known for the country’s most impressive and important ruins and archaeological discoveries, such as the Valley of the Kings in Luxor — and end some 150 miles downstream in Aswan. The trick is to find the right way to explore this amazing river, whether that’s aboard a brand new riverboat, a restored paddle steamer or a luxury dahabiya modelled on a traditional sailing boat. Here are the best Nile cruises.

A cabin on MS Darakum, a good ship for a Nile cruise

1. MS Darakum, book via Riviera Travel

Best for watching the world go by Those who like to take the long route and stay on a boat for the duration of their Egyptian adventure in Egypt will enjoy a cruise on the 52-cabin MS Darakum. Thanks to its very low draft, it is one of the very few vessels that can sail from Cairo to Luxor. After an intoxicating few days in the capital, exploring its markets, mosques and ancient wonders, it’s time to travel south. The beauty of covering a much longer distance than a traditional Nile cruise is the extra time it allows to simply sit and watch the world go by. Riviera Travel’s Wonders of the Nile itinerary is sprinkled with long and leisurely sailing days where there’s little to do except relax on the sun deck and gaze out at the small farms and date plantations, before retreating inside to attend the fascinating onboard lectures.

The deck on an Exodus Nile cruise ship

2. MS Movenpick Royal Lily or Royal Lotus, book via Exodus

Best for  ticking off the sights All of Egypt’s most significant sites are given adequate attention on Exodus’ nine-day premium Nile cruise. After time in Cairo and a short flight to Luxor, it’s time to board for a voyage through 7,000 years of history. The traditional-style ships include large royal suites and very high levels of service and comfort throughout. As well as all the usual big hitters, there are plenty of offbeat options that make this an eye-opening choice for the curiously minded traveller. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the impressive seventh-century St Simeon Monastery, the nearby traditional Nubian village and the chance to see Cleopatra’s unfinished obelisk.

3. MS Nile Plaza, book via Titan Travel

Best for cruising in style The MS Nile Plaza first took to the water in 1990 but was refurbished a few years ago to modernise the onboard amenities and bring a new lease of life to the decor. The interiors, including the 55 spacious cabins, are tasteful, with rich wooden panels and neutral tones broken up by art deco-inspired light fixtures and calming house plants. Titan Travel’s eight-day Egypt’s Timeless Riches trip includes a voyage on the four-star MS Nile Plaza, starting and ending in Luxor. It begins in spectacular style with visits to the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens before setting sail to Edfu and onwards to Aswan.

The pool on Oberoi Zahra, a good ship for a Nile cruise

4. Oberoi Zahra, book via Hotels.com

Best for maxed-out luxury Devotees of the namesake hotel chain can enjoy the brand’s luxury on the water aboard the plushest boat on the Nile. The modern and minimalist Oberoi Zahra enjoys prime position at its private mooring spot on the banks of the corniche in Aswan. Its elevated approach doesn’t end there. As well as offering trips to the temples of Edfu and the island of El Nabatat on itineraries that include a four-day trip from Luxor, the boat has plenty to keep guests entertained, from a library and games room to a gym and open-air pool. At night, astrology lectures reveal how the night sky influenced life in Egypt in the past. The 27 cabins are tasteful, and decorated in a natural colour palette; both of the suites have a private terrace and a hot tub.

This cruise is a great option for families or groups of friends looking for privacy and flexibility. On board there is a heated plunge pool and six individually designed cabins influenced by the country’s culture, geography and heritage, including the white Farouk Suite on the upper deck, where the decor is inspired by Egyptian royalty. SS Sudan, a good cruise ship for a Nile cruise

6. SS Sudan, book via Original Travel

Best for  Agatha Christie lovers One of the most historic and atmospheric vessels to ply the Nile’s waters, this celebrated 19th-century steamer once welcomed Agatha Christie aboard. It is widely believed that it was that trip in 1933, accompanying her husband on an archaeological mission, which paved the way for one of her most accomplished murder mysteries. Following Kenneth Branagh’s 2022 adaptation of  Death on the Nile , the SS Sudan is the perfect ship for fans of the Queen of Crime; there are cabins named after Agatha Christie and Hercule Poirot. The boat exudes opulent period charm, from the teak decks and parquet flooring to the brass bed frames in many of the rooms. Guests also have exclusive access to a network of expert archaeologists who will help bring the historical ruins to life.

SS Misr, a good ship for a Nile cruise

8. SS Misr, book via Noble Caledonia

Best for traditionalists Misr, which means “Egypt” in Arabic, is a propeller steamer that has long enjoyed a romance with this country. Built in Preston in 1918 by the Royal Navy, in 1938 it was converted into a luxury yacht that played host to King Farouk, the country’s penultimate monarch. The vessel has now been fully restored to its former glory, and its three, four and seven-night trips are known for celebrating local food — and there’s a rather regal feeling inside the main Marasem restaurant, with framed photos of past royalty dotted about and waiters smartly dressed in attire that takes its inspiration from the glory days of Farouk. The food is largely international but local flavours are celebrated in dishes such as bessara, a local dip made from fava beans.

MS Esplanade, a good ship for a Nile cruise

9. MS Esplanade, book via Mayfair Cruises

Best for R&R A sophisticated option, focusing on the Upper Nile, the MS Esplanade offers cruises of up to seven nights (minimum three nights) that take in both the east and west banks of Luxor, the Horus temple at Edfu and even the mummified crocodiles of Kom Ombo. When it comes to relaxation, guests can spend time in the hushed spa on the lower deck or relax on one of the shady poolside cabanas on the breezy top deck.

La Flaneuse du Nil, a good ship for a Nile cruise

10. La Flaneuse du Nil, book via Authentic Hotels

Best for return visitors For those who have already sailed the Nile and may be looking for something different, La Flaneuse du Nil is a tempting alternative. While most boats travel north from Aswan towards Luxor, this intimate five-day cruise heads south into Lake Nasser bound for the rock-cut temples of Abu Simbel. Powered by sails and tugs, just like the original dahabiyas that were once a regular sight on the waterway, this cosy vessel showcases the subtle beauty of the vast man-made reservoir that straddles Egypt’s border with Sudan. The boat sails at a leisurely pace, with stops for lake swims, sunset hikes and solitary mornings on quiet beaches, as well as guided trips to some of the most impressive ancient wonders Egypt has to explore.

Sanctuary Sun Boat III, a good ship for a Nile cruise

11. Sanctuary Sun Boat III, book via Sanctuary Retreats

Best for  fun on the river An extremely attractive boat, and one of the few vessels to (occasionally) cruise from Cairo to Aswan, the Sanctuary Sun Boat III takes its inspiration from the glamour of the 1920s and 1930s. Think ecru tones, four-poster beds draped in the finest Egyptian linen and entertainment in the form of belly dancers and whirling dervishes. There are modern touches, too, with air conditioning and a swimming pool on the Cleopatra Oasis sundeck: the perfect spot on which to sip a hibiscus juice and watch the world go by.

12. RV Da Vinci, book via CroisiEurope

Best for value With its understated style, the RV Da Vinci is a good choice for passengers who want to travel in more contemporary surroundings. Built in 1993 and fully refurbished since, it offers a comfortable base to travel on the classic route from Luxor or add on a few days in Cairo. CroisiEurope’s eight-day Land of the Pharaohs cruise includes excursions to all the headline sights, such as the Valley of the Kings and Temple of Kom Ombo, and options to book others such as a breathtaking balloon ride over the Nile Valley or the evocative sound and light show at Karnak. At the end of the day, enjoy a final cocktail as the sun goes down — all drinks are included in the fare.

Alongside famous sights such as the Pyramids of Giza, the Valley of the Kings and Karnak, activities include a football match with local children and some of the ship’s crew, sand dune boarding, swimming in the Nile, exploring the river by bike and traditional felucca, and a behind-the-scenes visit to the captain’s wheelhouse. Best for  solo travellers If you’re fed up with being stung by single supplements, don’t want to set sail with loved-up couples, or simply just enjoy travelling alone then check out the Travel Department’s dedicated single sailings. The company charters this comfortable ship which has 75 cabins, and for solo travellers it makes for an exclusive and intimate holiday. The sun deck bar is a top spot to mingle over cocktails with newfound friends and enjoy barbecues. The supplement-free solo itineraries take in a seven-night Nile cruise, with included shore trips to the Temple of Horus, the Valley of the Kings, the High Dam and the temples of Karnak and Luxor. At the end of the cruise you’ll fly and flop with a couple of days of relaxation in the Red Sea resort of Hurghada. The tour operator also uses the vessel for its escorted group tours on the Nile.

The Sonesta Dahabeya Amirat, a good ship for a Nile cruise

15. Sonesta Dahabeya Amirat, book via Sonesta

Best for  groups You can sail the Nile in style on this twin-masted dahabiya, which harks back to the graceful travel of bygone times. Inspired by the 19th-century vessels used by royalty and aristocrats, this intimate and sophisticated 14-passenger ship is the smallest in the fleet owned by the international Sonesta hotel group. It’s a wonderful choice for extended families or groups of friends who want to book an entire ship for an exclusive holiday. Sumptuous cabins are decked out in blue, gold and cream and guests can wallow in baths after a busy day sightseeing. The ship goes back and forth on week-long trips between Luxor and Aswan and wherever possible sails under wind power.

Best for being pampered AmaLilia, set to sail on the Nile in 2024, would impress even the most discerning pharaoh with its marble bathrooms, heated pool, massage treatments — and even a nail bar. Its suites are stylish and contemporary, and the decor throughout the ship has an understated elegance, showcasing Egyptian ornaments and artwork. Thoughtful itineraries will take guests on excursions to often-overlooked places, including the sacred city of Abydos — a necropolis for the earliest Egyptian kings, where the mortuaries include the Temple of Seti I, completed in 1279BC — and the Abdeen presidential palace for lunch. AmaLilia is an almost identical ship to AmaWaterways’ first Nile ship AmaDahlia, with the addition of more plush suites.
