Heineken launches cruzcampo lager on draught into the uk.

Heineken has revealed plans to launch its Spanish lager brand Cruzcampo on draught into pubs and bars across the UK.

cruise campo tesco

The launch, which takes place this week seeing the popular lager brand rolling out across the UK on-trade, is being supported by a multi-million-pound marketing campaign across TV and social media.

The 4.4% ABV lager, which is brewed in the UK, will be available exclusively on draught at “an accessible price point”.

Speaking exclusively to the drinks business , Cruzcampo senior brand manager Christopher Buckwell, said: “A team of brewers from our Cruzcampo facility in Seville worked very closely with our Heineken UK brewing team over the course of many months to ensure the beer produced was aligned to our Cruzcampo brand in Spain. It will be brewed in Manchester.”

Additonally discussing the launch, beer writer Roger Protz shared via Twitter that Cruzcampo will be brewed at Heineken’s “Royal Brewery” in Manchester, essentially making the beer a British beer, but simply using its Spanish branding.

Upon querying as to whether the recipe would stay the same as the one available in Seville, or be adapted, Buckwell told db that the “version” of Cruzcampo that will roll out across the UK has been made “with a UK audience in mind” and explained: “Spain offers variations of Cruzcampo. We have worked closely with our Spanish colleagues to ensure we are creating an authentic, refreshing version of Cruzcampo lager made with a UK audience in mind.”

Buckwell stated: “Cruzcampo will be available exclusively to the UK on-trade on draught initially and it will be available in the off trade from the autumn,” and hinted that the reason behind this decision was because Heineken believes pubs and bars are “the best place for consumers to taste their first experience of Cruzcampo” prior to it hitting the shelves of supermarkets and off licences.

Despite Heineken staying vague on where exactly will it be available across the on-trade, it has revealed that it has “already seen a great response from publicans for Cruzcampo” and has “already had hundreds of outlets sign up as stockists” and hopes to see “more outlets coming on board over the summer months”.

Matt Saltzstein, Heineken UK beer brand unit director said: “The launch of Cruzcampo will see Heineken UK continue its commitment to support the on-trade, helping operators meet consumer needs. Holidaymakers returning from Spain, particularly from the Cruzcampo home of Seville, have been calling for the brand to be brought to the UK and even reached out on social media asking for it to be launched here. As the number one draught beer in Spain, Cruzcampo will serve customers the ‘Spirit of Sevilla’ by bringing friends and family together for some relaxing quality time.”

Saltzstein added: “Mainstream lager has the highest number of drinkers across all beer categories, accounting for one in every three pints. While some consumers may have to make their money work harder, they still want to discover new brands that feel special. Offering a premium quality experience but at an accessible price point on the bar is critical to meeting these demands. Cruzcampo is an affordable trade up option for lager drinkers who enjoy discovering new experiences.”

As well as what Heineken has admitted is a “significant” marketing spend, the brand is set to be supported in pubs and bars with new fonts, glassware and PoS” as well as the chance for people to enter prize promotion activity.

Heineken has been contacted regarding its UK launch of Cruzcampo, however the drinks giant has stayed silent on its exact fiscal investment and has only revealed that the beer will be supported by “a major multi million pound marketing campaign” to help drive awareness.

Which lager brands Cruzcampo will rival is yet to be seen, but, as Heineken has just offloaded its Kronenbourg 1664 brand’s UK rights to Carlsberg this week too, this could be a strategic move for the drinks giant or simply a way of retaining its brewing capacity for its UK brewery.

Buckwell added: “We know that consumers are looking for discovery and new brands but are also mindful of the cost of living,” and explained: “A mainstream lager brand, such as Cruzcampo, offers a premium experience at a more accessible price point to help drive sales in outlet.”

Cruzcampo lager makes UK off-trade debut

The launch of Cruzcampo will be backed by a ‘multimillion-pound’ marketing campaign

Heineken has made its Cruzcampo lager available to supermarket shoppers for the first time.

The Spanish-inspired lager, which was introduced by Heineken in the UK in April, will now roll out in Tesco , Booker and One Stop.

Two SKUs – a 4x440ml pack (rsp: £6.25) and a 10x440ml slab (rsp: £12.50) – are available now, with further formats including a 660ml bottle (rsp: £2.75) and a 12x330ml pack (rsp: £12.50) set to follow in September.

Cruzcampo in the UK has an abv of 4.4%, as opposed to the 5% abv Cruzcampo Glacial and 5.4% abv Cruzcampo Especial Heineken sells in Spain.

The beer is produced at Heineken’s brewery in Manchester, which recently saw a £25m investment to boost its sustainability credentials.

Citing a KAM Media survey undertaken in February, Heineken said 29% of UK consumers have reduced their spending on alcohol in the face of cost of living pressures.

Cruzcampo would offer “all the advantages of Spanish premium beers” at “an accessible price point” to consumers, it added.

“We see an opportunity to launch Cruzcampo as an affordable trade-up option for lager drinkers who enjoy discovering new experiences,” said Alexander Wilson, Heineken’s off-trade category and commercial strategy director. “The launch of Cruzcampo in the on-trade has been extremely popular as consumers seek out authentic Spanish beers and we’re looking forward to replicating this success in the off-trade.”

The launch of Cruzcampo would be backed by an “unmissable UK-wide multimillion-pound marketing campaign”, rolling out across TV and social media next year, Heineken said.

Authentic and refreshing beer. I usually get the cans as this bottle size is too big - once opened it can go flat if not drunk quickly!

Good quality lager

nice and refreshing with a smooth and crisp finish. cruzcampo never disappoints

Good all round lager

Nothing standout but nice all the same. Not gassy like some lagers, goes well with lime or lemonade. Would buy again.

Really enjoyable lager. Not too hoppy tasting and not too light, it was just right. Refreshing, best served chilled, not too gassy like some beers. Will definitely buy again. Shared the large bottle with my husband and we both agreed it was a winner!

Not the best flavour, not the worst. Very much a middle of the road beer, with not a particularly distinctive flavour.

Lovely light beer

First time trying this and enjoyed it- it's light and refreshing

HEINEKEN UK launches Spains leading lager Cruzcampo® in on-trade

FB5D4B16-A1CF-4C40-8CEB-9A7DF84149FD

HEINEKEN UK has announced that it is launching Spain’s number one draught lager, Cruzcampo®, across the UK this week with the launch supported by a multi-million-pound marketing campaign, across TV and social media.

Brewed in the UK, Cruzcampo® 4.4% ABV lager is exclusively available on draught. And, in the face of cost-of-living increases, with 29% of consumers saying that they have cut their spend on alcohol, HEINEKEN UK say it comes with an accessible price point.

In Scotland, HEINEKEN UK have revealed that Spanish lagers are in 138% growth and account for one in every seven pints sold in the Scottish on-trade, and for for over one-fifth of premium beers served. It means, say HEINEKEN UK, that Cruzcampo® “has all the advantages of Spanish premium beers at an affordable price, providing consumers with a great quality experience that trades them up from classic lager brands while remaining accessible.”

Matt Saltzstein, HEINEKEN UK Beer Brand Unit Director says, “The launch of Cruzcampo® will see HEINEKEN UK continue its commitment to support the on-trade, helping operators meet consumer needs. Holidaymakers returning from Spain, particularly from the Cruzcampo® home of Seville, have been calling for the brand to be brought to the UK and even reached out on social media asking for it to be launched here. As the number one draught beer in Spain, Cruzcampo® will serve customers the ‘Spirit of Sevilla’ by bringing friends and family together for some relaxing quality time.”

“Mainstream lager has the highest number of drinkers across all beer categories, accounting for one in every three pints. While some consumers may have to make their money work harder, they still want to discover new brands that feel special. Offering a premium quality experience but at an accessible price point on the bar is critical to meeting these demands. Cruzcampo® is an affordable trade up option for lager drinkers who enjoy discovering new experiences.”

As well as the significant above-the-line and social media spend, Cruzcampo® bar stand out is supported with will fount design,  glassware and POS. To further support operators, Cruzcampo® will be running a prize promotion until 14 May wihere the winning can host a mighty one-night-only fiesta for its customers, transporting them to Spain with food, entertainment, and a true Spanish lager in hand.

Top Spanish beer Cruzcampo launches in UK as Iberian brands continue British invasion

Spanish beer sales rocket over the last 12 months

cruise campo tesco

ONE of Spain’s top draught beers is launching in Britain with Heineken UK bringing over Cruzcampo to the country.

The lager will be available exclusively on draught with Heineken describing it as a ‘a great quality experience at an accessible price’.

Cruzcampo was first brewed in Sevilla in 1904, and experts describe it as having subtle hoppy notes and fruity characteristics, finished with a signature bitterness, to make it a fresh, crisp, easy drinking beer.

“People in the UK want Spanish lager, so we thought we’d make it more accessible by launching Cruzcampo into the mainstream,” said Heineken UK’s Serena Smith.

“If you go to Spain on holiday and just ask for a beer, this is what you will get,” she claimed.

People in Spain will beg to differ with many different brands including Mahou, Amstel, Estrella Damm, and Estrella Galicia.

The most popular ones vary by region, with Cruzcampo understandably strong in its home area of Andalucia.

Spanish lager sales have risen by 73% in England alone over the last year with 20% of premium pints pulled is a Spanish originated brand like San Miguel, Estrella Damm, and Madri Excepional.

The British invasion has seen Barcelona-based SA Damm- makers of Estrella Damm- buy its first UK brewery last November by taking over the Eagle Brewery in Bedford.

Estrella Damm is currently sold in over 10,000 British bars and restaurants

At the time, SA Damm’s executive president Demetrio Carceller Arce said: “This deal will strengthen our position in the UK market and help drive our brand in the UK, a key market for the company’s international growth.”

Heineken UK reveals exclusive on-trade launch

Taste of Spain: Heineken UK has announced the launch of Cruzcampo to the UK on-trade

The firms senior brand manager, Christopher Buckwell, told The MA while the positioning of Cruzcampo is a mainstream premium lager, the serve presents a “nice opportunity” for operators to draw in consumers looking for “premiumisation at an affordable price point”.

He said: “Heineken UK is really pleased to announce it’s bringing Cruzcampo, the number one draft beer in Spain, over to the UK.

“[Cruzcampo] offers consumers an opportunity to taste something really authentic, a really great quality beer with lots of heritage, but at a price point that isn't going to break the bank.

A bit of discovery

“We know this year is going to be all about getting consumers back in the pub and having something on the bar that offers them a bit of discovery and feels like a real treat, but is a bit more affordable, is going to be really important this year.”

Recent figures from CGA showed Spanish lager has increased in popularity, having grown 73% in the premium and mainstream lager category as of February this year, with one in five lagers served in the UK on-trade now Spanish.

“UK life can feel quite rushed and Spain is the perfect antidote to that; it’s warm, it’s colourful, it’s relaxed. Cruzcampo fits in that occasion of ‘carefree time’, Buckwell continued.

Though it is not just consumers seeking Spanish lager, Buckwell stated a number of outlets had contacted the brand recently asking when Cruzcampo, which he described as a “refreshing” lager best-served “ice-cold”, would be introduced in the UK.

He added: “In the last six months we've had quite a few people reach out to us with the rise of Spanish lagers on our corporate Facebook and Twitter account and say ‘we'd love to get Cruzcampo on the bar’.”

Taste of Spain

Heineken UK will support pubs and bars looking to stock Cruzcampo with PoS material as well as a multi-million-pound campaign, including social media and tv adverts, to bring the lager “into the hearts and minds of UK consumers”.

In addition, the launch will include a competition for operators to win everything they need to host a Spanish night at their pub, including food and entertainment.

Buckwell added: “[Southern Spain] is a hugely popular tourist destination for Brits.

“When they come back, they've almost got this taste of Spain on their lips that they then can't find anywhere in in the UK and Cruzcampo offers an opportunity to have that taste of Spain at home.”

Tesco Clubcard and P&O

Cool Cruiser

I notice that P&O are one of the things we can redeem our Tesco points for. Has anyone done this ? Is it possible to redeem against a cruise we already have booked - we are due to pay the balance in a couple of weeks and would like to use our Tesco points to reduce the balance if that is possible or is it for new bookings only.

Have used the Tesco vouchers a few times, really easy and a great way to help with the cost, unfortunately they can only be used at the time of booking and you cannot add anymore at a later date. Remember the new limit on the maximum amount that can be used.

Thanks, Thought that would be case.

danielundecided

Yeah, we found this out too late to make use of it as well. If we would have knows it would be an easy way to get a bit of money off bearing in mind my account is with Tesco

We've used out Clubcard vouchers many times. It used to be a good deal but now you are very restricted on the amount you can use. You can only use them at the time of booking. Check the extra information by following the link on the P&O Clubcard section. It gives all the details about how to use and the amount you can use. We no longer use them this way as the price you pay is higher then you can get without using them. Combined with the restrictions it's no longer as good a deal as it used to be.

We now them to book our pre cruise hotel with Novotel. If you are a member of Accors you get the same member price as you would if you were not using the vouchers, overall a much better option.

Hiltons is another option but only on limited dates, we have never managed to get a booking when we wanted to travel.

5,000+ Club

Some of the responses you have had are incorrect.

It used to be that the amount you could redeem was unlimited but you lost out on some deals like free parking.

Now you can only redeem a relatively small amount (£810 total discount) and not at all for cruises less than 6 days, BUT you do now get ALL discounts and the same price as if you booked a select price without them. In other words, there are no disadvantages to using them anymore (unless you like booking saver fares where you don't select your cabin etc), just lots of restrictions including booking at least 90 days in advance.

The best deal would be for somebody doing a one week cruise in an inexpensive cabin with the maximum vouchers allowed. Then the discount would be a meaningful percentage.

  • 2 months later...

You used to get four times the value of the vouchers but now you only get three times the value.

We have used the vouchers on our transatlantic cruises but found you had to have a lot of vouchers for it to be worthwhile. We always have select fare so we can make our own choices.

The only way you will fînd if it is right for you is by doing a test booking by ringing the Tesco P and O line and getting a quote and compare it with what price you can get from a TA.

We get a lot of vouchers because we have a Tesc credit card, but are now looking at other ways of using them.

Good luck if you manage to get all the discounts and benefits but I will be surprised if you do. We sometimes get a bit of OBC, but never parking.

If you have Tesco club card vouchers, use them as an excuse to book another cruise. Most of us look for an easy reason to book another cruise and the belief it is cheaper is good enough for me. When I am sitting in a restaurant knowing someone got the cruise cheaper then me I don't care, I just enjoy the cruise and savour the food.

We are 5 weeks out from taking our first P&O (Britannia TA) having booked using Tesco vouchers. We have booked with other lines previously, one word of advice would be to check the T&Cs of your travel insurance to see if you are covered for payment using vouchers if you need to cancel. Often insurance companies only cover loss of money.

One restriction is that they can't be used with an onboard cruise credit as I discovered when I thought I might use some recently.

I wonder if this a recent change as we certainly got OBC for our voyage when we booked last year???

sorry, I worded that incorrectly. I meant to say that it can't be used in conjunction with a future cruise deposit bought on a previous cruise. does that make more sense?

So do did we, not much but better than nothing.

As we book the saver fare - much cheaper but you don't get the choice of cabin - the vouchers were not an option for us as we only had about £100 which did not cover the cost difference between saver and the "pick your own cabin" fare.

Plus the phone number you have to use is a kick-back number you pay extra to use. I'm always suspicious of any company that fleeces their customers that way.

  • 2 weeks later...

You get 3% cashback on Quidco. When I booked last year it was 4% and because I had to book by telephone as we required a wheelchair adapted cabin they gave us the 4% in onboard credit.

  • 11 months later...
Does anyone know if Tesco are stopping this deal? I have tried to go on the website to swap more vouchers for P & O and it says "Out of Stock" :( I already have £390 changed over but was hoping to add some more at the end of January and then book next year's cruise...

There was a story in my paper the other day about Tesco announcing that they were changing their Clubcard scheme and that some people were unhappy about it. As I don't shop with Tesco, I'm afraid I didn't read it carefully enough to be able to tell you any of the details.

I phoned them about it. Apparently they get a number of vouchers from p&o. When they runout they have to wait to be restocked. Apparently that could be a day or a week

i received an e-mail from Tesco earlier this week saying they are scrapping the two tier system, i.e. from some partners you got 2 x value of vouchers and some 4 x value (including P&O) and as from 15 Jan it would 3 times for all. Yesterday I got another e-mail saying that due to customer feedback this will not happen until 10 June.

Your getting your facts mixed. P&o have not been 4x got a few years. They are unaffected by the change

Just looking at this and the same which appears to be available (or not as the case may be) for Cunard.

The details on the Tesco site say the vouchers are not available on internet prices or if book with agents. That seems to mean that you have to ring P&O (or Cunard) to book and that the prices would be higher than what is seen on the net. Can anyone tell me what price difference I can expect if not booking online, c.f. online prices? Is there a big difference?

Edit:- I also note it says they are not transferable. Does that mean that if you book a cruise, you cannot transfer the booking to another cruise if you wish to, like you normally can with select fare bookings up to a certain date? My mother in law is very elderly so we may need to change holiday details at times, though probably not.

Sorry Dinglebert, you are quite right. It doesn't take much to confuse me these days. I need a holiday, 23 February on Azura, yippee.

Years ago, you got 4 times the value and you could redeeem as many as you liked. We once had quite a few thousand pounds off a cruise. The downside was that other offers (discount prices, on board credit etc) didn’t apply, so you had to use quite a few for it to be worth doing.

In recent years, you only get 3 times the value (so it is NOT affected by the changes announced this week) and it is capped at quite a low figure (£750?) which I think has to be used on cruises of a week or longer, BUT the positive side is that the discount now applies to whatever the Select price is at the time you book (so you no longer pay more) and you get all the add-on benefits such as on board credit, free parking etc. Prices on the P&O website are identical to the prices you pay if you book by phone with P&O.

The non-interchangable clause refers to the Clubcard vouchers, not the booking. All that happens is that the Clubcard vouchers give you an additional discount, but thereafter normal P&O booking conditions apply, so you can change the booking if you need to and not lose the value of the redeemed vouchers.

Thank you Selbourne for that explanation - certainly does seem to have been a lot of changes.

We do not have a lot of vouchers as we tend to do a fair bit of shopping at Aldi (prefer the lower prices :) We have been using them for restaurant vouchers, but after a very poor meal in Cafe Rouge a couple of days ago thought we may just spend them on something else.

How To Use Tesco Clubcard Points to Buy Cruises

On cruises with Royal Caribbean, P&O, and Cunard it is possible to use Tesco Clubcard points to pay for your cruise.

The value of the Clubcard points are usually multiplied meaning that £1 worth of Clubcard points will usually pay for more than £1 worth of cruise.

Which Cruise Lines Accept Tesco Clubcard Points as Payment?

Royal Caribbean, P&O Cruises, and Cunard allow passengers to book cruises using Tesco Clubcard points.

These are a number of terms and conditions attached to the purchase which normally include a minimum spend and maximum voucher value.

Using Tesco Clubcard points can be a great way to save money on a cruise as the value is multiplied.

What Are Clubcard Points and How Do I Get Them?

Clubcard points are loyalty points gathered by shopping in the UK supermarket Tesco.

To get a Clubcard you must sign up online or in-store. You can then scan your Clubcard or scan the code on the Tesco App each time you shop in Tesco.

Shoppers collect 1 point for every £1 that they spend in Tesco stores or 1 point for every litre of fuel in Tesco petrol stations.

100 points are worth £1.

Clubcard points can be ‘spent’ in Tesco as payment – or can be exchanged with a number of other companies for vouchers which are usually an increased value on the Clubcard fare.

Using Clubcard Points to Book a Royal Caribbean Cruise

One of the most popular cruise lines to book using Clubcard points is the American cruise line Royal Caribbean.

Royal Caribbean are popular with families, young adults, and older adults too. They sail across the world and have many large and exciting ships.

To learn more about Royal Caribbean check out our recommended cruise lines page here:

Recommended Cruise Lines, Full List

Emma and Symphony of the Seas

£1 worth of Tesco Clubcard points is worth £2 when applied to a Royal Caribbean cruise.

There are a few terms and conditions which relate to buying Royal Caribbean cruises with Tesco Clubcard points:

Minimum Cruise Value

  • The cruise must cost at least £510 per guest (excluding taxes). This must be the file price that you are paying per passenger so no discounts or deals can reduce this price. This price also cannot include gratuities.

Maximum Clubcard Reward

  • The maximum value of Clubcard points that you can purchase is £510 per guest.

Cruise Payment Date

  • Cruises must be booked, and fully paid at least 69 nights before departure. 69 nights seems like a bit of an odd timeframe since most travel agents and cruise lines ask for payment 60 days before.

Cruise Length

Note: Royal Caribbean are able to convert the spend back into Clubcard points if they need to do so.

  • The cruise must be at least 7 nights long.

Age Restrictions

  • One guest must be at least at least 18, or 21 if cruising around North America and Canada. This is pretty standard for most cruise lines.

New Bookings Only

  • If you have already booked a Royal Caribbean cruise you cannot use Tesco Clubcard points to pay off the remaining balance. Tesco Clubcard points are valid only for new bookings.

Cruise Booking Only

  • The value of the Tesco Clubcards can only be used against the cruise itself. If buying as part of a package the Tesco Clubcard points cannot be used against flights, hotels, excursions or any other onboard expenses. This means that your cruise itself (without flights) must cost the £510 mentioned above per guest.

Other Discounts

  • Tesco Clubcard cannot be used with the following discounts: Future Cruise Certificates, Defence Discounts, Blue Light Card Discounts or any cashback sites.
  • Vouchers can be used with Crown and Anchor Society discounts (Royal Caribbeans loyalty scheme).

If you cancel your cruise after having paid with Clubcard points Royal Caribbean may keep some to cover things like cancellation charges.

How to Use Tesco Clubcard Points to Pay For a Royal Caribbean Cruise (Step-by-Step Guide):

  • Head to the Tesco Clubcard website here: Tesco.
  • Sign into your ClubCard account (or make one if you don’t have one already).
  • Decide how many vouchers you’d like, add these to your basket.
  • Receive an email with a voucher code which can be used on Royal Caribbean’s website.
  • Click the link in the email to go to Royal Caribbean’s website, when buying your cruise, tick the Clubcard points box and enter the voucher code. You can also use the voucher over the phone by calling Royal Caribbean. The prices of Royal Caribbean cruises usually don’t vary between the prices on the phone and the internet.

Find out about the cruise I took on Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas, it is one of the biggest cruise ships you can sail on.

Using Clubcard Points to Book a Cunard Cruise

Cunard also accepts Tesco Clubcard points as payment towards cruises.

£10 worth of Tesco Clubcard points is worth £20 of Cunard cruise vouchers.

Vouchers must be bought in increments of £10.

I took my first cruise with Cunard in 2016 and had an amazing time.

Cunard sail the worlds last Ocean Liner, the Queen Mary 2. It is a wonderful ship.

I definitely wouldn’t recommend a Cunard cruise to everybody though as the dress codes are quite strict. To learn more about my experience cruising with Cunard, watch the video below:

There are a few terms and conditions which relate to buying a Cunard cruise with Tesco Clubcard points:

  • There is no minimum cruise cost price to use Tesco Clubcard points as payment
  • The maximum value of Clubcard points that you can use is £810 per booking.
  • Cruises must be booked at least 90 days before the sail date.

Clubcard points cannot be used against Early Saver or Saver Fares with Cunard.

  • The cruise must be at least 6 nights long.
  • Tesco Clubcard points are only valid for new bookings. If you have already placed a deposit or part paid you cannot use Tesco Clubcard points to pay for your Cunard cruise.
Vouchers may only be used to pay for the basic cost of the Voyage. Basic cost does not include: domestic flights; flight upgrades; land tours; hotels; shore excursions; payment towards on board spend of any type; surcharges; administration fees; car parking fees; fuel supplements; or any optional extras or ancillary items. – source.
  • Clubcard points can be used with other offers apart from ‘repeat booker’ offers. They are valid only for ‘Cunard’ fares.

How to Use Tesco Clubcard Points to Pay For a Cunard Cruise (Step-by-Step Guide):

  • Receive an email with a voucher code which can be used to book a Cunard cruise.
  • You must phone Cunard on a dedicated Tesco number in order to use the vouchers. They cannot be used online.

Using Clubcard Points to Book a P&O Cruise

P&O Cruises accept Clubcard points as payment towards cruises.

P&O are one of my favourite cruise lines for families, to find out why, visit our Recommend Cruise Lines page.

£5 worth of Tesco Clubcard points is worth £10 when applied to the cost of a P&O Cruises cruise.

Vouchers must be bought in increments of £5.

There are a few terms and conditions which relate to buying a P&O Cruises cruise with Tesco Clubcard points:

  • The maximum value of Clubcard points that you can purchase is £810 per booking.
  • Tesco Clubcard points are only valid for new bookings. If you have already placed a deposit or part paid you cannot use Tesco Clubcard points.
  • P&O Cruises only allows you to use Tesco Clubcard points as payment towards the cruise itself. This doesn’t include any flights, hotels, transfers, shore excursions or onboard spending.
  • A ‘Early’ fare is a fare booked fare in advance where you have less flexibility. You’ll be assigned a cabin number and don’t have as much choice about dining times/table sizes. A ‘Saver’ fare is the same thing but usually just not booked so far in advance.
  • A ‘Select’ fare gives you a choice of cabin number and priority for dining times. There are a few other perks but these are the main ones. To read more about select fares, check out P&O Cruises’s website here: P&O Cruises, FAQ.

Find out about the cruise I took on P&O’s largest ship, Ariva, here:

How to Use Tesco Clubcard Points to Pay For a P&O Cruises Cruise:

  • Receive an email with a voucher code which can be used to book a P&O Cruises cruise.
  • You must phone P&O on a dedicated Tesco number in order to use the vouchers. They cannot be used online.

Other Sites You Can Use Clubcard Points on:

If you planning on staying in a hotel pre or post-cruise it may be worth looking at hotels.com who offer a £10 voucher for £5 worth of Tesco Clubcard points.  The voucher can be used against the cost of the hotel room only and only the first room on any booking will be able to use Tesco Clubcard points. To learn more check out Tesco’s website here: Hotels.com Clubcard Points.

Novotel Hotels

I’ve used Novotel hotels on a number of occasions and have always been very impressed.

They’re usually modern, clean hotels with a business kind of feeling about them.

They offer a £5.00 voucher for £2.50 of Clubcard points.

To learn more visit Tesco’s website here: Novotel Clubcard Points.

Wind project in San Diego’s backcountry runs into turbulence

A row of wind turbines near Interstate 8 in Boulevard.

The Boulder Brush Project, paired with turbines at the Campo Indian Reservation, hits legal hurdles.

• Show more sharing options
  • Copy Link URL Copied!

The fate of a proposed wind energy project that would install 60 turbines hundreds of feet high in rural East County is up in the air, after a California court granted an appeal to a local group opposed to its construction.

Ranchers Donna and Joe Tisdale of Boulevard object to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors’ approval of the Boulder Brush Project that plans to build a high-voltage substation, a switchyard and an overhead transmission line along a 320-acre corridor on private land. If approved, the infrastructure at Boulder Brush would connect to turbines at a proposed wind project located on the Campo Indian Reservation.

The Tisdales formed a group called Backcountry Against Dumps that filed a petition in San Diego Superior Court, arguing — among other complaints — the project violated the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and various planning and zoning regulations.

The Superior Court dismissed the petition but Backcountry Against Dumps took its case to the appeals court.

On March 13, a three-justice panel at the Fourth Appellate District issued a 25-page ruling that vacated the Superior Court’s decision, saying that “equity dictates that the trial court allow the petition to proceed, to ensure” that the portion of the project that is outside of the Campo Indian Reservation “complies with California state environmental standards.”

That means the case goes back to the lower court.

Terra-Gen , a renewable energy company, wants to develop the project. When asked what the court decision means for the plans to build the wind farm, the company told the Union-Tribune in an email, “We are reviewing our legal options and have nothing further to comment on at this time.”

A spokesperson for the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, which unanimously approved the project in March 2021, said, “We can’t comment on active litigation.”

A pair of emails and a voicemail left with Marcus Cuero, chairman of the Campo Band of Diegueño Mission Indians, inquiring about the effect of the appeals court ruling did not receive a response.

Donna Tisdale was quick to react to the news, saying, “I’d like to see Terra-Gen throw in the towel.”

Donna Tisdale of Boulevard, CA

Tisdale has been a longstanding opponent of wind energy projects, which have led to the erection of dozens of turbines that dot the landscape in San Diego’s backcountry, particularly along gusty ridge lines that run parallel to Interstate 8 in places like the McCain Valley.

Her group’s lawsuit contends the county’s environmental review of the Boulder Brush project did not fully analyze the risks the turbines have on bats, golden eagles and other migrating birds; the project’s potential effect on groundwater in the area (the project includes water collection and septic systems ); and noise complaints.

According to permitting documents, the turbines would reach 586 feet at their highest points, which is higher than San Diego’s tallest building, the 34-story One America Plaza .

“You know how people complain about jets taking off from airports?” Tisdale said. “Well, turbines in areas with strong winds kind of sound the same way, except (unlike planes) they never land. You’re constantly being bombarded ... It can cause vertigo, anxiety, sleep deprivation and all kinds of things that are not good for people or animals.”

Supporters of wind farms say they are an effective tool to not only supply energy to California’s power grid but help the state reach its clean energy goal of deriving 100 percent of its electricity from carbon-free sources by 2045.

“We can avoid (needing to add) literally tens of gigawatts of capacity if we have wind in the mix,” said Nancy Rader, executive director of the California Wind Energy Association . “It’s really important that we develop every good, remaining wind resource in the state to meet the state’s goals.”

Speaking before the Board of Supervisors in 2021, Terra-Gen’s vice president of wind development said that Boulder Brush, in conjunction with the Campo Wind Project, is “likely one of the single most impactful decisions within the county to fight climate change and mitigate its impact on some of our most vulnerable communities,” as reported at the time by media outlet inewsource .

If completed, the Campo Wind Project would generate 252 megawatts of electricity, enough to power about 70,000 homes. The turbines are estimated to displace about 58,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year — equivalent to the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by nearly 14,000 gasoline-powered cars in one year .

The Boulder Brush and Campo Wind projects would connect to San Diego Gas & Electric’s existing transmission lines via the Sunrise Powerlink.

Terra-Gen, based in New York City but with an office in San Diego , operates 23 wind energy facilities across the country.

The company has wrangled with Backcountry Against Dumps before.

Tisdale’s group filed a petition nearly four years ago, complaining the height of the Campo wind turbines pose a hazard to aircraft and could impair radar function in the area. The Federal Aviation Administration, however, gave the project a “no hazard” determination.

Backcountry Against Dumps appealed the FAA’s decision and last August, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in a 29-page opinion remanded the decision back to the FAA and instructed the agency to hear the arguments the group made in its petition.

In a separate wind energy project, Terra-Gen in June 2023 contacted the Board of Supervisors and withdrew its application to construct the Torrey Wind Project , a 126-megawatt facility in Boulevard that would consist of 30 turbines.

“They can always reapply,” Tisdale said. “It’s never over.”

How your weekly Tesco shop can pay for your cruises

Did you know shopping in Tesco can help pay towards your cruises? In this post, we’ll let you know how you can pay for your cruise using your Tesco Clubcard points, which are worth THREE (please note, in June 2023 this with be changing and they will be worth less) times the face value of the vouchers you receive in the post.

Collecting Tesco Clubcard Points

The Tesco Clubcard is a store card that provides you with points for spending money at Tesco or any of its Partners. You can collect 1 point for every £1 you spend in Tesco stores and Tesco online. Paying for fuel, you will get 1 point for every £2 you spend. You can also earn extra points if you are a Tesco Bank or Tesco Mobile customer.

How to convert the points to Cruises

When you receive your Tesco Clubcard vouchers, it may be tempting to spend the face value in-store on some nice treat, but if you head online you can ‘boost’ your vouchers so that they are worth three times the value for a range of partners, including cruise lines!

To boost your vouchers, you will need to sign in online at  https://secure.tesco.com/clubcard/boost/

The process is quite simple:

  • Sign in to the Tesco Clubcard website ( https://secure.tesco.com/clubcard/boost/ )
  • Select the value of Clubcard vouchers you want to exchange and check out
  • You will then receive an email from Tesco within an hour that will contain your voucher
  • Contact the cruise line directly to make a booking

Currently, Tesco allows you to boost your vouchers for three cruise line, you need to look closely as only certain fairs and cruise types are supported. Don’t worry, this post should help make it crystal clear.

Using Clubcard vouchers to book a Cunard Cruise

We love a Cunard cruise, and its great that you can triple your Clubcard points in exchange for a little luxury. For every £10 worth of Clubcard vouchers, you will get £30 to spend with Cunard.

  • The cruise must be a minimum of 6 nights.
  • You must book directly with Cunard at least 90 days before you travel.
  • Vouchers can’t be used with any other offer.
  • You must make a new booking and select the ‘Cunard’ fare. The vouchers can’t be used on Early Saver or Saver Fares.
  • The maximum amount of Clubcard vouchers that you can turn into Clubcard vouchers is £270, which will give you £810 towards your cruise.
  • The vouchers must be used at time of booking and can’t be added on at a later date

Using Clubcard vouchers to book a P&O Cruise

If you follow us, you will know we love a P&O cruise and in fact, we’ve previously used Tesco Clubcard points to pay for a P&O cruise. Its great, as every £5 in Tesco Clubcard vouchers converts into £15 to spend with P&O.

Here are a few things to be aware of:

  • You must book directly with P&O at least 90 days before you travel.
  • You must make a new booking and select the ‘Select’ fare. The vouchers can’t be used on Early Saver or Saver Fares.

Using Clubcard vouchers to book a Royal Caribbean Cruise

Using your Tesco Clubcard vouchers to book a Royal Caribbean cruise is great as you can convert £0.50 of Clubcard vouchers into £1.50 to spend on your Royal Caribbean cruise.

Be aware of the following:

  • Minimum cruise fare of £510 per guest (excluding taxes and charges)
  • The maximum voucher redemption is £510 per guest.
  • You must book your cruise directly with RCI 56 days before departure
  • The cruise must be a minimum of 7 nights.

Is it worth it though?

It does sound great doesn’t it, getting THREE times the value of your Clubcard voucher to spend on a cruise – what’s not to love about that?

You need to read the small print before converting your vouchers to make sure you are converting it for an eligible cruise. We also highly recommend checking out the prices with various agents, as sometimes they can be significantly cheaper than booking direct. Remember, these vouchers can’t be used on discounted fares.

We looked at using some Tesco Clubcard vouchers for our Royal Caribbean cruise. It would have shaved around £200 off the final bill. But by going via a travel agent, we were able to save that amount anyway, and still have the Clubcard vouchers left to spend.

Where this has worked out great for us in the past is with P&O. We’ve managed to find a very good value cruise, that even with a discount from travel agents, it still saved us a significant amount off our cruise.

So, as we always say, shop around first, but if you are one of those people that always book direct with the cruise line and always opts for the full fare, Tesco Clubcard vouchers could save you a fortune.
