Whistler Bear Tour

I would highly recommend this company for the Bear Tours they do up the mountain. Our guide, Geoff, was awesome, very knowledgeable and great at finding bears. The comapny is the only one with actual access up the mountain, so don't be sucked in by other companies claims, the bears are basically all on the mountain, 53 of them at last count. We had to book a full year in advance, many people on our tour left it till 8 months prior and all of them missed out, so get in early. We did the evening tour (3 tours each day 6am, midday and 6pm) and during our time we found 7 single bears and a mother with 2 cubs, we were able to get out of the vehicle for 4 of the sightings. Tour was brilliant.

Visited Whistler Mid July. Smoke free and warm summer days. Went up the Gondola on a bright, clear morning. Best advise, arrive prior to 10am, the crowds build from there. Relaxing gondola trip up the mountain. Great vistas of the village, lake, forests, and if one is lucky, a bear or two. From the Roundhouse, we enjoyed the views and Olympic rings for pictures. Then continued down to the Peak Express. It's a bit of a hike to the chair but well worth it! This is an open air chair lift which will take you up to the Peak Lookout and newly built Cloudraker Skybridge. A MUST! The skybridge is a suspension bridge over the bowl and a viewing platform. If you are scared of heights, this might not be for you. Great views! After visiting the new attractions, we continued on to alpine hiking. We located the detours for the High note trail and followed it down and then back up. It was quite a strenuous hike, challenging with lots of loose shale. But well worth the vistas of Black Tusk and enjoyed the frolicking mountain marmots, glacier trekking and backwoods trails. After the hike, we also pit stopped in the Roundhouse for sustenance. Enjoyed some naturally flavoured, free water and enjoyed our picnic lunch out of the elements. After being perked up, we sauntered to The Peak to Peak Gondola. More fabulous vistas! The return trip to the village was spectacular. Clear and beautiful. Highly recommend this adventure! Quick tips...remember this is the alpine, bring a jacket and wear runners or hikers. Leave the flip flops for the pool. There are food vendors $$$ so I recommend bring up snacks or a picnic lunch. Try to utilize all the chair lifts and gondolas. For $58 it's a steal for a day of adventure. If you attempt the alpine hikes, please ensure you grab a trail guide and the walking poles were much needed on the High Note trail! A wonderful day adventure. Amazing vistas and experiences to be had! This mountain gets better every year!

whistler blackcomb bear tour

Canada's big ski resort north of Vancouver. Purpose built feel to the two mountains. Well organised and maintained.

Came here for the bike park and wasn't dissappointed one bit. Are there long lines some times, yes. Are there brake bumps, you bet. But there are also some of the funnest, knarliest trails around. Avoid the lines by biking garbonzo and creekside zones. Seen bears all over the place, from the chairs and while on the bikes. Love this place!

Since Blackcomb is building its own gondola, the only way to get there is to take the Whistler gondola up to Whistler then take the Peak to Peak gondola to Blackcomb. The views are stunning and if you love mountain hiking, go for it. There are lots of things to do on the top of both mountains and just the views and the suspension bridge is a great thing to do. Too bad after it rained for a day, the smoke that was from all the wildfires in BC covered the mountains.

We only had one night in Whistler as part of our two week Canada trip and despite a daunting 5 hour drive to Clearwater later on that day, I was determined to convince my boyfriend (who has a fear of heights) to convince my boyfriend we *needed* to experience this. We headed up the Whistler cable car and had a short jaunt up the only trail that was open that day (I think it was the one that headed to the Pika trail?!), And during this short walk saw a couple of marmots and ice walls! We then went on the Peak2Peak gondola (to the horror of my boyf) and spent a little time walking around the viewing area of Blackcomb where we walked among the clouds (but could still see loads of the view below!), we saw more marmots and played Mario Kart in the N Switch promotional area in Blackcomb Visitor Centre :) probably spent about 2 hours total pottering about, which was plenty for us but really feel we had a great experience and got a lot out of it! My boyfriend's fear of heights did not get any better thanks to the Peak2Peak though.....!

Bear Watching Tours

Whistler is known for its amazing outdoor activities and vast areas for bears and other wildlife to roam free.

Whistler Blackcomb alone has over 8,100 acres of terrain for skiing and over 180km of trails for biking which covers quite a bit of the “backcountry” which is also  home to over 70 black bears . Whistler is a bear smart community because we love our bears and want to be able to cohabitate with our furry friends. With over 10,000 full-time residents and over two million visitors, this is not an easy job but the Get Bear Smart Society (GBS) gives us the knowledge and the tools to help this happen.

Bear Watching Tours

Bear viewing tours  are available on  Whistler Blackcomb Mountain  which is home to over 70 black bears and cubs.  A professional guide will take you out and show you the bears in their natural habitat.  You will get to see the mothers feeding the cubs if you are lucky!!  The 3-hour tours leave from Blackcomb Village which is not far from our main hotel doors so grab your family (children 9+) and go and explore the nature that awaits you right in our own backyard.

If you would like to join a  Bear Viewing tour  to see these glorious animals in their natural habitat please contact our Guest Services team via email at  [email protected]  or call  1.800.667.3363   and they will help you create this memorable experience.

Whistler Bears

Black bears.

whistler blackcomb bear tour

In September 2011, we visited Whistler and joined Michael Allen on his Black Bear viewing tour.

We decided to take the early morning tour and met up with Michael at 5:45 am by the Wizard express chair lift. At 6 am, we and two other couples piled into Michael’s truck and headed off up Whistler Mountain to see if we could spot some black bears.

whistler blackcomb bear tour

The weather early on was pretty overcast and misty, but we soon spotted a brown black bear called Brownie, she was pretty close to the vehicle, however, as Liz chose to sit in the back of the vehicle it meant we had to wait for the others to disembark before we could… this and the fact that we didn’t have openable windows resulted in us missing a few good photo opportunities! My advice is, don’t be polite, do not offer to sit in the back! We have one blurred shot of Brownie’s bum.

whistler blackcomb bear tour

Not far from Brownie was the famous black bear called Jeannie along with her 8 month old cub. We spent a short while watching her move around with her cub. The best shots would have been as they walked across the road by the side of us and then in front of us… no pictures as we were in the back. We did have a couple of opportunities to take some shots… but the mist was a nightmare and our shots pretty poor! Fortunately, Liz had the video camera and we have a little bit of footage of Jeanie, her cub kept out of sight.

whistler blackcomb bear tour

As the mist started to lift we had a good viewing of a male bear called Franz who came within around 20 feet of us. He was eight years old and so thin, Michael explained that he would be OK as male bears don’t need to fatten up quite as much as the females. Franz was kind enough to show us that bears do indeed do what they do in the wood.

Our fifth and last bear sighting was a female called Chanelle. She was eating berries on a bank above us.

The trip lasted just over 3 hours and although it may appear a little expensive at over $200 each inc. tax, it was worth it and Michael is a very knowledgeable and friendly guide.

This tour was booked through the following site: click  here

Very sadly not long after we returned from this trip we found out that Jeanie had been shot, apparently she was a ’problem’ bear. Here is a video we took of her playing with her cub (the video was taken on another day during our visit to Whistler).

Wildlife in Whistler: Bears, Eagles & More (2022 Updates)

Two bears with mountains behind them, bear watching blog header

No summer trip to Canada would be complete without seeing a wild animal of some sort, and in Whistler, our animal is the black bear. While there are opportunities to come across them by chance, taking a Whistler bear tour is an almost guaranteed way to see bears in BC.

You’ve seen them on TV and on the internet, but how about seeing a black bear in real life, during your next trip to Whistler!

Whistler Bears: Black and Grizzly

There are two types of bear species found in Whistler: black bears and grizzly bears, and it’s sometimes difficult to tell them apart. However, there are a few differences that can help distinguish between the two.

One of the main differences between the two types of bear is their size, with grizzly bears being larger. Black bears usually weigh in at around 150-600 pounds, whereas grizzly bears are much larger and weigh around 400-1000 pounds.

Other differences include face shape, with black bears having long, pointed faces and grizzlies having dish-shaped faces. Black bears also have tall, pointed ears, whereas grizzly bears tend to have short, round ears. Grizzly bears also have a noticeable shoulder hump that is not seen on black bears.

5 Rules for Bear Safety in Whistler

Wildlife sightings should happen naturally – there’s no sign of a zoo anywhere in Whistler and there never will be! Wildlife, no matter where in the world, should be respected and given a wide berth so they can stay just that – wild.

Here are five bear safety rules you should always remember:

1. Always carry bear spray . Bear spray is to be used defensively, to stop a charging or attacking bear. Remember, bear spray should only be used as a last resort. Hold the bear spray with both hands, one on the can and the other on the trigger. Wait for the bear to be within 30 feet, aim downwards, and discharge the full contents of the can. Spray from side to side creating a cloud between yourself and the bear. If the bear continues to charge, aim for its face. When the bear stops its charge, it is time to leave the area swiftly.

2. Black Bear or Grizzly? Make sure you’re able to identify the difference between bear species. Know your black bears from your grizzly bears as they require different reactions in the case of an attack.

3. Bear attacks are rare, but here’s what to do in the unlikely event one should occur:

  • Grizzly Bears : If attacked by a grizzly and wearing a pack, keep your pack on. Play dead, laying on the ground on your stomach with your hands behind your head. Spread your legs wide in order to make it more difficult for the bear to turn you over, and remain still until the bear leaves the area. If the attack persists, then fight back vigorously aiming all blows to the face.
  • Black Bears : In the case of an attack by a black bear, do not play dead. If wearing a pack, drop it and try to escape to a secure place like a building or car. If escape is not possible, fight back using objects and concentrating blows to the bear’s face and muzzle.

4. Be bear safe in Whistler.  When visiting Whistler, it is easy to forget that it is home to countless black bears and the occasional grizzly. It is important to remember to bear-proof homes or holiday rentals and to get rid of any attractants. Close and lock all bear-accessible windows and doors to both houses and cars, and don’t forget to keep all trash indoors or in locked garages and sheds that are not accessible to bears.

5. Be bear smart when camping. It is important not to attract bears to the area in which you will be sleeping. Do not cook or eat food in your tent; don’t keep any food in the tent; and remember to clean dirty dishes and cutlery that may be stored in or around your tent. Most importantly, carefully store your food. There are a few different ways to do this, from bear canisters and bear bags to properly hanging your food from trees or poles.

The Big Bad Bear-Watching Tour

The best way to see bears in BC is with Whistler bear tours . Comfortable Jeeps will take you to prime bear-viewing locations where you can safely watch bears in their natural habitat. It’s the perfect activity to do, rain or shine, as the bears don’t mind a bit of wet weather and will be out and about regardless.

What to Expect

If you’re looking to get out of Whistler Village and into the wild—in style—then this is the trip for you. This intimate excursion focuses on the resident black bears and cubs found in the Whistler Olympic Park area, while also providing a look at the infamous 2010 Winter Olympics venue.

Enjoy a host of special privileges with after-hours access, a drive along the 2010 Olympic legacy Cross Country Trail network as well as a once-in-a-lifetime view from atop the Whistler Olympic ski jumps.

Get up close and observe bears like you never have before, from a safe distance in the comfort and safety of a luxury Jeep. Along this trip, you will also get the opportunity to see some of Whistler’s iconic landmarks like Alexander Falls and Black Tusk.

What to Bring

Be sure to pack your camera to capture these magnificent animals in their natural habitat—this is an experience you will not want to forget. You will also need to bring hiking gear suitable for the weather conditions. Last but not least, be sure to bring positive energy and a healthy respect for nature.

When Can You See Bears in Whistler?

The best time to see bears is usually between early May and early August. Bears can be found foraging for fruit, berries, seeds, and nuts amongst a whole host of other food sources as they put on weight ready for winter hibernation.

5 Alternative Ways to See Bears in Whistler

1. peak 2 peak 360 experience.

Black bears love to graze on the lush grassy slopes of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains and, luckily, you can view from above as you travel on the Whistler Village Gondola or Blackcomb Gondola towards the top. Keep your eyes peeled for the large bruins that can vary in colour from black to a cinnamon brown. Despite how big they are, they’re easily mistaken for tree stumps and camouflaged in the dark forests.

Deer can also be seen grazing along the slopes and often travel in groups, though, like the bears, they camouflage really well in the forest. While hiking the alpine trails on Whistler or Blackcomb, listen for the shrill squeak of a pika or the squeal of a marmot. Whiskey jacks love to chatter overhead in the alpine (hold on to your snacks!) while the eerie caw of ravens echo through the valley.

2. Or . . . Golfing

Whistler golf course, bear playing

It’s true, Whistler’s resident bears love to hang out on the local golf course.

Black bears love golf courses!   The succulent grasses, dandelions, and generally quiet surroundings make them the perfect places for bears to hang out. Book a tee time at one of the three golf courses in town and you may well see one of the freeloaders as you play.

Do not let bear watching interrupt your play, and don’t even think about walking onto the course if you haven’t paid your green fee – leave these majestic beasts in peace. Some of the courses have viewpoints along the Valley Trail, so if you’re walking or biking alongside it, you might get lucky. But they do tend to retreat deep within the course.

3. Whistler Bike Park

For those looking to take it up a notch, downhill mountain biking in the Whistler Bike Park is a great way to experience Whistler’s most popular summer sport. Take a lesson with a certified mountain bike guide or explore the trails on your own, though it is recommended that first timer’s to go up with a guide.

Black bears and deer love to graze on the grassy mountainside and can often be seen hanging out alongside the trails. They are usually focused on eating and relaxing so don’t get intentionally close – they’re quite used to the mountain bikers zooming by, and if you don’t bother them, they won’t bother you!

4. Hiking in the Backcountry

If you are looking to explore the vast mountain areas surrounding Whistler, then hiking in the backcountry is a great way to see Canadian wildlife in its natural habitat—and you might see a bear or two. Whether you’re enjoying the wonderful sight of wildflowers in full bloom surrounding Rainbow Lake or taking in the jaw-dropping views at Panorama Ridge, be on the lookout for wildlife.

Don’t forget, when in the backcountry, take your ‘bear smart’ principles with you. Always carry bear spray and keep it within reach at all times during your trek, and make sure to keep food far away from camp. While hiking through the backcountry, it is also good to make lots of noise to warn bears or other wildlife of your presence. Bear bells can be very useful for this.

5. Walking or Biking the Valley Trail

With all of the adventurous activities to do in Whistler, sometimes a light stroll or bike along the Valley Trail is a perfect way to spend your day. The Whistler Valley Trail spans a massive 40 kilometres, connecting Whistler neighbourhoods from Function Junction to Emerald and everything in between.

It is estimated that approximately 50 black bears make their home in the surrounding forests and mountains of Whistler. This means that on your journey along the Valley Trail, you might be lucky enough come across one. If you do have an encounter with a bear on the Valley Trail, be sure to give it plenty of room and don’t get too close. Choose an alternative route if the bear is blocking the trail.

What Other Animals to Expect in Whistler?

Whistler is home to numerous wild animals, and while many are elusive, there are some animals in Whistler you just might see during your trip.

Hoary Marmots

They are Whistler’s namesake – the town is named after the shrill whistles heard throughout the alpine by these noisy, furry creatures. The hoary marmot is a large, bulky ground squirrel with short, heavy limbs and a broad head.

They’re often seen on summer hikes in the alpine, sunning themselves on boulders but keeping a key eye out for danger. They blend in well with their surroundings and don’t move incredibly fast, but you’ll only be able to see them in summer as they hibernate during the winter.

When riding up the gondola, you might just spot a few deer munching on the grass down below. They tend to be quite shy and like to hang out on the mountain and stay out of the village area. When hiking or biking, you might see them next to the trail, but they’re very skittish. You might be wondering why deer would hang out in an area frequented by black bears, but they don’t seem to mind and live harmoniously together.

Whiskey Jacks

Whiskey Jacks, otherwise known as Gray Jays, are very frequently spotted year-round in the alpine. They’re notorious at the Harmony and Symphony ski lift lines hoping to snag a piece of someone’s granola bar or trail mix – but do resist as it does interfere with the ecosystem and can make the birds ill. Simply hold out your hand or ski pole and one might stop by for a brief moment.

Steller’s Jay

A very common bird in the Whistler area, the steller’s jay is also one of the prettiest birds to be seen. With it’s brilliant blue and grey coloured feathers, it is difficult to miss.

These wild cats are rarely seen but live among the mountains of Whistler. Although it is unlikely you will encounter any cougars in Whistler, you can be sure they might see you as they remain hidden in the surrounding landscape.

Bald Eagles

These majestic birds of prey are recognizable for their brown body and wings, white head and tail, and yellow, hooked beak. Keep your eyes peeled for these predatory raptors high in the mountain tops or lurking for prey in nearby rivers.

One of Canada’s most iconic creatures can be found in Whistler, swimming in the lakes and rivers and building dams along the waterways. You’ll often see them during a sunset paddleboard session on Alpha Lake or along the River of Golden Dreams. The beaver works as a keystone species in an ecosystem by creating wetlands that are used by other animals. Beavers do not hibernate and stay cosy in their lodges throughout the winter before reemerging once the lakes and rivers melt again.

Another squeaky and super cute rodent often seen (and heard) in Whistler is the pika. They’re found in boulder fields in the mountains and in the valley and have a very distinguishable sound. They look like a mix between a rabbit and a hamster, with a small, fluffy body and short, rounded ears. They spend the summers gathering food to eat during the winter as they do not hibernate. Often where you’ll see a marmot is where you’ll find pika as well!

Well Worth the Attention: Wildlife in Whistler

Seeing a bear is a highlight of any visitor’s trip to Whistler, so why miss the chance when you could partake in Whistler bear tours to get up close and personal with these famous residents. Not only will you capture tons of photo and video footage, you’ll also learn all about them from professional guides who can answer all your burning questions.

If you’re leaving it to chance – best of luck, you just might see one when you least expect it.

The Best Way to See Bears in Whistler

bear watching tour in Whistler BC Canada

One of the questions I’m most often asked is “where can I see bears in Whistler?”. And I get it – they’re fascinating creatures, plus bear cubs are super cute! However, I’ve seen people go searching for bears on their own and that is a really harmful and dangerous practice. (You can see my post on Bear Safety Tips here.) So I teamed up with Whistler Photo Safaris to experience one of their bear viewing tours in Whistler and it BLEW MY MIND.

bear cub watching in Canada

Whistler Photo Safaris describes its bear watching experience as an “authentic opportunity to head into the wild in style, with award winning photographers, adventurers, and highly educated guides.” Let me tell you – they are being humble.

Their level of knowledge about the bears in Whistler is extraordinary. Not only do I learn about the local bear population, the different personalities of the bears, the mamas, their cubs, and their history in the area, but it was done in a responsible way. At no time on our tour did we ever disrupt, frighten, or impose ourselves upon the bears. In fact, our guide specifically went to great lengths to ensure we never got in their way, even if that meant taking a longer, bumpier route around them.

bear watching in Canada

The bears in the Callaghan Valley, which number about 60 in population, are not used to human activity as much as bears in other areas, like on Whistler Blackcomb, and they’re not tagged. And since Whistler Photo Safaris has exclusive access to Whistler Olympic Park in the Callaghan after hours when it’s gated and locked, you can watch the bears undisturbed in their natural habitat.

whistler blackcomb bear tour

The bear watching tours run five times a day, seven days a week so given the amount of time Whistler Photo Safaris is operating, they know the bears and their habits intimately. This means you are extremely likely to see bears on your tour – I saw 11 bears! – but also that the experience is authentic yet respectful to the bears.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW:

What happens on the bear tour.

Your guide will pick you up at your Whistler hotel or pre-determined location in a 4×4 jeep and drive you out to Callaghan Valley. We stopped along the way at the spectacular Alexander Falls before proceeding to Whistler Olympic Park. Once inside the park, the search begins! The guides are always on the lookout for bears, whether its favourite snacking or napping locations or by tracking new scat left by the bears. The 4×4 jeep allows for some serious off-roading, too! We also get a very cool tour of the Olympic venues and went right up onto the ski jump! The views are incredible but nothing really matches the splendour of seeing the bears. We saw a mama with three cubs right at the end of our tour, and we just sat and watched them forever. It was amazing!

4x4 Jeep bear watching tour

How long is a bear tour?

We did the sunset bear viewing tour. We were picked up at 7 p.m. in Whistler village and the tour lasted about 2.5 hours. It was incredible!

Whistler Olympic Park Callaghan Valley ski jump

How often do the tours run?

Whistler Photo Safari’s operates five tours a day, seven days a week from May to October (weather dependent). The tours run at 6 a.m., 9 a.m., 12 p.m., 4 p.m., and 7 p.m. Bears are usually most active around sunrise and sunset (they like to nap during the heat of the day) so you may want to keep that in mind when booking.

Whistler Olympic Park Callaghan Valley ski jump

How much is a bear tour?

The price of the Whistler Photo Safari bear tour is incredibly affordable considering the value that is included. The rate is $189 for adults and $129 for children 12 and under. Each bear tour is private, which is something that was implemented during 2020 but I’m told it will continue. A two-guest minimum is required, which is what we did and I can tell you that it is such a cool, intimate experience.

Where are bears in Canada

What to bring on a bear tour?

Definitely dress in layers because we’re in the mountains and temperatures can vary. I brought a warm and waterproof jacket with me. Since we were doing the evening tour, I anticipated the weather might fluctuate a lot. I’d recommend wearing hiking boots or sneakers with lots of grip. You’ll also want sunscreen and a hat, as well as a bottle of water. I’d suggest you leave food at home. And lastly, don’t forget bug spray! The mosquitos are vicious in the mountains and are particularly hungry in the evening.

Where can I see bears in BC

So if you’re still considering where is the best place to see bears in Canada, I cannot recommend Whistler Photo Safaris enough. Their bear watching tours are one-of-a-kind and incredibly memorable, even for a longtime local like myself.

I am so grateful to Whistler Photo Safaris for hosting me and my husband for this experience.

If you have any questions about the tour, please drop me a comment below! In the meantime, enjoy my favourite photo of our whole experience!

4 Family-Friendly Mountain Resorts That Offer Something For Everyone

I t wasn’t long ago that most ski resorts became ghost towns come the warmer months. These days, though, there’s a boom in summer recreation on the slopes at winter resorts. Ski areas are building bike parks, zip lines, and even mountain-based rollercoasters to take advantage of their ski lifts, and mountain resort base areas are abuzz with attractions like waterparks, disc-golf courses, and farmer’s markets. It’s family fun of the most active kind. And business is booming: At world-renowned ski area Whistler-Blackcomb, for example, summer visits now surpass those in winter. If you’re looking for a summer getaway that features stunning scenery, tons of activities, and plenty of mountain town chill, here are four mountain resorts to know.

1. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

Jackson Hole’s signature red tram cars have been hauling summer sightseers 4,139 feet to the summit of 10,450-foot Rendezvous Mountain for decades. But now the Wyoming resort has far more than that to offer once the slopes turn green. Your kids can still grab one of the resort’s famous waffles at the top of the tram, but now you can have them burn off the sugar in the resort’s bike park, on the aerial ropes course, or on the Via Ferrata. First constructed in northern Italy to help WWI soldiers move safely about the mountains, a via ferrata (“iron way” in Italian) consists of steel rungs and cables fixed to the sides of sheer mountainsides. Set on cliffs atop the Bridger Gondola, at Jackson Hole’s via ferrata, participants older than 12 can hire a guide, rent a harness, and experience the thrills of alpine rock climbing without the difficulty. One of the few such courses in North America, the Via Ferrata boasts 14 separate routes.

For kids too young for the climb, the Aerial Ropes Course at the resort base presents a thrilling set of challenges like balance beams, wobbly bridges, and cargo nets, all set 25 feet above the ground. There’s also no minimum age for Jackson Hole’s world-class lift-serviced bike park. Rent a bike and load it onto a lift to access 14 jump-and berm-studded trails ranging from the cruisy Buckaroo to the expert-only Dirty Harry. It’s not all spills and thrills, though: Kids aged three to 12 can sign up for the Grand Adventure camp at the Kids Ranch every Monday-Friday and have access to an array of attractions, including the bungee trampoline, rock climbing wall, pathway bike rides, and art and science activities.

2. Smugglers’ Notch

This Vermont resort is so focused on summer family fun that they literally guarantee it. Smuggler’s Notch has a written policy that if your child participates in their summer camp programs for at least two days and doesn’t have fun, they’ll refund the cost. The refund isn’t redeemed very often as families can choose from pickleball, arts and crafts and mountain bike lessons for kids as young as five (riding beginner strider bikes.) The resort boasts eight different swimming pools, including the Mountainside Water Playground featuring four giant waterslides, and offers daily swimming lessons for kids.

Smuggler’s Notch boasts two of the world’s top-ten ranked disc golf courses (and is set to hold the world disc golf championships in August.) There are fireworks every Thursday, and an all-ages outdoor movie night every Tuesday, amongst dozens of other weekly entertainments like magic shows and concerts. If it rains, head inside to the 26,000-square foot, two-story Fun Zone 2.0, which boasts climbing walls, bounce houses, warrior courses, mini golf, and more. Looking for something totally unique? Try the Llama Treks, a three-hour guided hiking tour accompanied by llamas carting pints of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. It’s Vermont, after all.

3. Whistler-Blackcomb

Summertime at British Columbia’s Whistler-Blackcomb is synonymous with mountain biking. As far back as 1989, riders have been loading bikes into the Whistler Village Gondola to whiz the 4,900 feet back to the base, and the purpose-built Whistler Mountain bike park officially opened in 1999. Today, Whistler’s expert instructors offer lessons for kids as young as five on 50 miles of trail including on famous classics like A-Line and Karate Monkey.

There’s way more than bikes at Whistler though. Equally popular is sightseeing and hiking via the resort’s famous Peak-to-Peak Gondola, which traverses the 1,427-foot valley between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. Or take an airy ride on the Peak Express chairlift to the summit of Whistler Peak, where guests can cross the 426-foot long suspended Cloudraker Skybridge to the West Ridge to the Raven’s Eye, a cantilevered viewing platform extending 40 feet into the air over Whistler Bowl. There’s a bouncy castle, human gyroscope, bungy trampolines and climbing wall at the Family Adventure zone and six levels of escape room if it rains. Whistler-Blackcomb’s most unique family activity, though, has got to be the guided bear viewing tours, a 4x4 tour of the mountain where more than 60 black bear and cubs roam the fields and forests.

4. Boyne Mountain Resort

Michigan’s Boyne Mountain is probably better known for its massive indoor water park than its skiing. Featuring four pools, seven waterslides, and a surf simulator, the 88,000 square foot Avalanche Bay water park will keep kids entertained all day long no matter what the season. Of course, their water sports aren’t indoors only: Boyne’s Adventure Center has a beach on adjacent Deer lake, where guests can also rent paddleboards, kayaks, and sailboats. Boyne’s renowned five-day wakeboard camps for kids ages 6 to 16 also take place on Deer Lake for overnight or day campers. Younger kids, from age 4 to 13, can drop into Fritz’s Adventure Camp weekdays all summer long for activities ranging from swimming to outdoor games.

For an airier experience, try the Zipline Adventure, which begins at the top of the mountain and descends a series of 10 lines to the base. Boyne also has 11 tennis courts, a stable for horse and pony rides, a paintball center, and a disc golf course. If you don’t fall directly into bed after days of adventure featuring all that, the resort hosts activities like hayrides, bonfires, and outdoor movie nights most evenings all summer long.
