8 Best Sites To Find Free Video Footage for Your Travel Vlog

by Paul @ Travel is Life | Apr 11, 2021 | Travel Bloggers | 0 comments

Free Commercial Use Videos

Hey traveler, while you’re here join my   friends list   to get all the perks I offer at Travel is Life.

Do you need free video footage to use in your travel vlog? Here's my curated list of the best free video sites that offer royalty free videos for commercial use with no attribution required.

As much fun as it would be to travel to every corner of the Earth and capture every second of footage I need for my videos , I can't be everywhere at once, so I often rely on stock videos to fill in the gaps. And whenever possible, I gravitate towards using free video footage that's offered under the Creative Commons Zero , or a similar license, that allows me to copy, modify, and use the footage without asking for permission or providing attribution — including for commercial use.

A fellow vlogger in our Travel is Life Creators community recently asked me where I get this CC0 footage, so I've put together a list of my favorite sites.

The list is small, and I'd love to add more sites to it, so if you've got any other sites you'd like to add, drop a comment below this post or e-mail [email protected] . For the sake of keeping this list easy to navigate for other vloggers, I'll only be adding websites that offer CC0 or similarly licensed footage that can be used for commercial purposes without attribution.

The reason I prefer “no attribution” is because it makes things easier to keep up with in the future. I'll often pull from old stock footage I've got downloaded on my laptop that I've used in other videos (as opposed to going back to the websites), and trying to remember where I got it all from for the sake of attribution would be a challenge, so I gravitate towards stock videos that do not require it.

PS: You can subscribe to my videos on Facebook , YouTube , and via my Friends List — or all three! Thanks for being a part of Travel is Life.

Pexels

Pexels is my favorite free video footage website and the one that I use the most. They offer a great selection of high quality videos and I'm thankful for the community of videographers who share their work on the platform. All photos and videos on Pexels are free to use without attribution (although credit is always appreciated by the artists) via the CC0 license or Pexels license which is similar.

Pixabay

I've always loved Pixabay for their free commercial use photos , but over the past few years, they've also grown their library of free videos as well. They offer a wide selection free video footage from all over the world under their own Pixabay license which allows for commercial use of their videos without attribution, similar to Pexels above.

Coverr

Coverr started as a side project in 2015 by the developers behind Veed.me — and they've continued to grow it after they sold Veed.me to Fiverr. Their selection is smaller than the sites above, but sometimes it's more about finding the RIGHT video than finding MILLIONS of videos, so it's one more place to look. Their license allows for commercial use without attribution, and only restricts uploading their videos to competing sites.

Vimeo

You've heard of Vimeo by now, right? At one time they were gearing up to be a YouTube competitor, but then they decided to go a different more premium / curated route. Well did you know that thousands of publishers make their videos available for free to the public under the CC0 public domain license? The videos are hit or miss depending on what you search, but there are some diamonds in the ruff within their library, especially if you need some random b-roll footage. Just keep in mind that many of the videos are home video quality because there's no curation involved.

5) ISO Republic

ISO Republic

ISO Republic has a relatively limited selection of footage, but their videos are CC0 licensed. They won't have many (or any) results for destination specific searches like “Ecuador” or “North Carolina” but offer a small selection for searches like “Coffee” or “Buses”.

6) FOCA Stock

FOCA Stock

FOCA Stock has a small selection of CC0 licensed videos, and like ISO Republic above, does not have a wide variety of destination specific videos. However no complaints because it's basically spearheaded by one generous photographer named Jeffrey Betts who launched FOCA in 2014 to share his work for free with the world. He's got a significantly larger selection of photos (tens of thousands) than videos (of which there are only 24 at the time of writing this), however, I'm including FOCA on the list because I love supporting solopreneur projects.

7) Footage123

Footage123

I don't know much about Footage123 , and they don't offer much information on their site about who's behind the project, but they've got some great drone footage! And if you make travel vlogs, I'd imagine that some quality drone shots for your b-roll would come in handy. Everything on their site is under a CC0 license.

8) RoyaltyFree YouTube Channel

Royalty Free YouTube

RoyaltyFree is a YouTube Channel that regularly uploads clips that you can use for commercial use without attribution. I can't tell how many videos they've uploaded (hundreds I believe), but all the clips I viewed were good quality. You would need to use a 3rd party YouTube video download tool to access these videos for your vlog.

What'd I miss?

If you know of any other great places to get free stock video footage that allows for commercial use without attribution, please drop a comment below or e-mail [email protected] .

Travel vlogs are a really cool way for you to share your experiences with viewers in a creative and dynamic way. When making your vlog, focus on things you’re passionate about, whether that’s the food, culture, or activities you get to do. Take lots of videos so that you can edit and compile them into a 3-5 minute vlog that highlights your favorite moments. You’ll be glad to have these visual keepsakes to remind you of your travels!

Creating Captivating Content

Step 1 Focus each travel vlog on a location or activity.

  • For example, if you’re super into regional food, use your vlog to highlight the different places you ate at and foods you enjoyed.
  • Keep in mind that you can create multiple vlogs for a single trip! For example, a trip you took to Mexico could produce separate vlogs about food, museums, and nightlife.
  • It’s okay if you end up with a vlog that is longer than 5 minutes! It’s a good length to shoot for, but some videos may need to be longer to cover everything adequately.

Step 2 Record things that are genuinely interesting to you.

  • If you’d rather browse used bookstores rather than take long hikes, then do that! There is an audience for almost every interest.
  • Vlogs are great because they can give others a snapshot into a different culture and place. If you’re following your instincts on your travel adventures, chances are you’ll create a vlog that others will find interesting, too.

Step 3 Include yourself talking about your experiences in your vlog.

  • Use a selfie stick or something similar to record yourself while you’re walking around. That way, viewers can see your expressions and the background of your location.

Tip: If you’re a little camera shy, pretend that you’re sending these videos to your best friend. You’ll smile more and feel more like yourself, which will create better content.

Step 4 Interact with the people you meet and include them in your vlog.

  • For example, you could say something like, “I’m recording a video for my viewers, would you mind if I asked you a question? Where would you recommend as the best place in the city to get fresh seafood?”
  • Not only does this create great content, but it’s also a cool way for you to immerse yourself more in your experience.

Step 5 Film short clips of things you see to add color and variety to the vlog.

  • Think about creating your vlog in a similar format to a movie trailer. You want to highlight different moments rather than a continuous stream.

Step 6 Try to keep your camera steady so the video doesn’t jerk or shake.

  • Try using a handheld stabilizer to produce stead, high-quality shots.
  • You could also look into stabilizing apps that modify your videos to reduce shakiness.

Step 7 Eliminate as much background noise as you can.

  • A wind muff is a small fur cover that goes over your camera’s microphone. It reduces the background noise but lets other audio, like your voice, through.

Tip: Test the audio before recording a longer video so you don’t end up with material you can’t use. Record yourself speaking for a few seconds and then play the video back to see if you can hear yourself talking.

Putting Together Your Video

Step 1 Use video-editing software...

  • Here are a few free options for well-reviewed video-editing software programs: HitFilm Express, iMovie (for Apple products only), VideoPad (some features do cost money), DaVinci Resolve 15, and VSDC (for Windows products only, the basic version is free).

Step 2 Start your vlog with a shot of the location and an introduction.

  • Imagine that you’re taking your viewers on the journey with you. Think about what information they need upfront to keep their interest.
  • For example, if you’re taking a tour of different wineries, start your vlog with a short video of you in front of a vineyard talking about what you’re about to do.

Step 3 Arrange your content so there is a beginning, middle, and end.

  • For example, if you’re going on a hike you could start at the beginning with a shot of the entry point, add some content about things you see along the way, and finish with the beautiful view at the end.
  • Chances are, you’re working with a couple of dozen short videos that you recorded on your travels. They should be in chronological order on your phone or camera already, so simply transfer them to your video-editing software and select the ones you want to use.

Step 4 Add or delete content so you’re left with a 3-5 minute vlog.

  • If the video is of a stunning view, keep about 3-4 seconds of it.
  • Conversations with others should be about 10 seconds long.
  • Videos of you talking should be about 15 seconds at a time, if not shorter.
  • Shots of you walking or looking at things should be 3-7 seconds long.
  • In the end, you have complete control over what you decide to do with your vlog! If you feel like a certain part warrants more time, go for it.

Step 5 Delete dead space and transitions where nothing is happening.

  • Even in sections where you’re talking, you may want to edit and splice your videos so that there aren’t long pauses.

Step 6 Add music to your video that complements the feel of your vlog.

  • For free music for your vlog, check out Soundcloud, the YouTube audio library, Free Music Archive, and Free sound .

Step 7 Review your vlog several times before publishing it.

  • You could even have a trusted friend watch the video and give you feedback about its pacing and sequencing.

Tip: Take 24 hours away from your vlog and then watch it one more time with fresh eyes. You may notice dead space that could be cut out or opportunities for more content that you thought you didn’t have space for.

Expert Q&A

12.  gone with the wynns.

From composting toilets to solar powering an RV (okay, not your everyday travel story), they’ve transformed the concept of an RV travel lifestyle for YouTube.

Their videos are well-shot and occasionally, filmed like a sexy commercial (okay, not your every day RV travel video).

Recently, they’ve made a rather new change in their lives, by trading in their RV for a sailboat!

Schedule : Weekly.

13. Samuel & Audrey

You may know Samuel and Audrey as their travel blogging aliases, Nomadic Samuel and That Backpacker .

As former ex-Korea expats, this adorable travel geek couple are on an indefinite road between expat life and nomadism.

Their channel is prolific with destination guides and food taste tests.

For audiences, who want to get their binge watching on without taking a break, they are also known to occasionally have long format videos.

Schedule: 1-2 times a week.

14. 8 Miles from Home

Inspiring us to take our dream lifestyle (and dog) abroad is 8 Miles from Home .

Sacha and Jymael are British photographers turn expat vloggers, documenting their life in Thailand.

Their vlogs are cinematic video diaries, occasionally incorporate dazzling special FX.

Recently they announced their new adventure~ a move to Portugal and a baby!

15. The Food Ranger

If you love Asian food, Trevor is The Food Ranger of Asia. An expat in Sichuan, China, he chomps and slurps some of the best Chinese cuisine (and uh, some pretty obscure foods too).

Commendable is his ability to upload regular videos while staying under China’s banned radar (YouTube and Google are banned in China).

He’s quickly growing a following as a new foodie channel to watch.

Schedule: Saturdays

How the best travel vloggers were chosen:

Like all lists, people will wonder why they’re not on it. I’m positive I missed some good ones, but this is very loose criteria I’d be using if I were hired to cast, produce or pitch a TV show. Creators did not need to meet all criteria, but most. – Programming: Weekly dedication, quality, storytelling & individual style execution – Audience: Niche, loyalty, & YouTube friendly – Blog worthy and/or binge worthy – Does it bring a new spin to the term “travel video” or “travel show” – Channel Personality/Talent: brand recognition, hosting & entertainment value

That’s a subjective question. If you go by subscribers it is Devon Supertramp or Fun for Louis on this list. Drew Binskey is definitely the most successful travel vlogger out there right now.

Mark Weins t ops the list as the best food travel vlogger. He takes you on a culinary journey around the world.
