Safari drive-through.

The four-mile self-drive safari is home to some of the world’s most beautiful and critically endangered animals. Split into African and Asian areas, almost all the animals are free-roaming and can literally walk straight past your car. In the African Plains, you will experience some of Africa’s largest animals; from gentle giraffe to huge-horned Ankole cattle and curious Congo buffalo, to mesmerising zebra. There is also the chance to glimpse the new babies. Wild Asia and Asian Lowlands allows you to come face-to-face with an array of endangered deer and antelope, as well as Bactrian camels. You may also get a glimpse of the world’s rarest deer; the Philippine spotted deer. Not forgetting of course, the endearing Indian rhinos and gentle banteng. Our Carnivores section is home to some of the world’s greatest hunters. Marvel at the magnificent tigers and rare painted dogs. Watch the beautiful dhole playing in Wild Woods and go off-road to get closer to the king of beasts in Realm of the Lions. In Elephant Valley, you will find our African elephants. Female, Five, came from an elephant orphanage in Kruger National Park and is famous for birthing the Park’s first baby elephant, Sutton, who has recently moved to another zoo.

African Walking Trail

New for 2022 was the African Walking Trail, offering guests to see some of the safari animal on foot for the first time in the Park’s history. This pedestrianised trail offers views of the giraffes, rhinos and elephants, as well as antelope, zebras and buffalo.

Discovery Trail

The walk-through Discovery Trail is a fantastic all-weather attraction, hosting several animal exhibits, a variety of encounters, talks and shows and a virtual reality river ride. Observe the Humboldt penguins in Penguin Cove, as they ‘fly’ effortlessly through the water, or see how many bats and douroucouli (night monkeys) you can spot in our Twilight Cave. Face your phobias in Creepy Crawlies or find the colourful fish in the Aquarium. At Red Panda Retreat, you will be able to spot Mei Lin and Sanka, as they explore their habitat or have a snooze. Reptile World is home to some of the largest and most deadly reptiles on the planet. See the giant green anacondas, shy pancake tortoises and brightly coloured dart frogs. In Lorikeet Landing, you can get up close to our amazing flock of rainbow lorikeets in their specially designed, heated enclosure. For a small charge, you can purchase a pot of nectar and marvel at these beautiful birds up close, as they perch and eat from your hand. In addition to all the exhibits, there are daily feeds, talks and encounters, including the fantastic Sea Lion Show, where our fabulous California sea lions show off their amazing behaviours, both in and out of the water. There is also the chance to meet one of the Park’s small, friendly animals, or learn more about life in cold blood at the reptile talks.

 Land of the Living Dinosaurs

Step back in time as you come face to face with some of the largest, most unusual and fearsome animals to ever roam the planet. Land of the Living Dinosaurs features over 40 life-size, animatronic dinosaurs, making it the largest animatronic dinosaur attraction in the UK. Life-like grunts, squawks and mighty roars emit from the prehistoric beasts and along with themed planting, geyser and swamps, the immersive experience makes you feel as if the story of the dinosaurs is unfolding in front of you. See friendly stegosaurus, ginormous Argentinosaurus and the terrifying T-rex as you journey through the four different time periods, starting with the Permian and ending with the Cretaceous. There is even a chance to dig for fossils in our Dino Dig.

Continue the prehistoric adventure and journey into the UK’s largest Ice Age exhibit. Ice Age is an immersive, multi-sensory experience, allowing guests to step back in time and walk amongst the magnificent creatures that roamed the Earth millions of years ago. The project features an enormous volcano and huge atmospheric ice cave, both of which can be walked through by explorers. The captivating exhibit begins at the start of the Cenozoic Era, nearly 65 million years ago and features over 20 life-sized species of mammals, the majority of which are animatronic. These moving, breathing and roaring creatures include a giant ground sloth, menacing hell pig and a herd of ginormous mammoth.

African Village

The African Village, located just past the Adventure Theme Park, is themed like a traditional East African village. It houses our lemurs and meerkats, plus a walk-through area where you can feed our friendly sheep and goats. On the way to the Village, make sure you look out for our pod of wallowing hippos. We have the largest pod in the UK and there is a chance to feed them and learn all about their different personalities at the daily Hippo Encounters. Meerkat Mayhem is home to three mobs of inquisitive, cheeky meerkats. Be immersed in the middle of a true meerkat manor as you watch them socialise, play and forage. You can even feed them in our daily talk. Walk with lemurs in Lemur Woods - the largest walk-through lemur wood in the UK. Two species of lemurs jump, swing and play around you, as you stroll through the woodland. Keep an eye out for our playful ring-tailed lemurs and fluffy, red-bellied lemurs. There are also daily lemur talks, where you can find out more about these amazing primates.

Tiger Tropics

In September 2022, Tiger Tropics opened, allowing guests to see the Park’s amazing Sumatran tigers on foot, for the first time, in their brand-new habitat.

Adventure Theme Park

If a whole host of animal attractions wasn’t enough, we also have a theme park to make your day even more exciting. The Adventure Theme Park is open daily from during the summer season and has a variety of rides, suitable for all of the family. From traditional rides showcasing ‘all the fun of the fair’, to water rides and rollercoasters, there is something for everyone. Test your skills on the dodgems, plummet 30m towards the earth on Venom Tower Drop, or soar above the ground on Kong. Some of our rides are definitely not for the faint-hearted! As well as the rides, the Adventure Theme Park hosts various games stands, and an arcade full of your favourite amusement machines.

Boj’s Giggly Park Play Area

Boj’s Giggly Park opened in 2017 and is an immersive, multi-sensory and themed children’s play area, located next to the Park’s African Village. Here, children will be able to find CBeebies and S4C favourite ‘Boj’ and his friends whilst they explore and play in the five interactive zones, designed specifically for younger visitors. The £850,000 project features different zones with characters from the show, such as Mia, Mr Cloppity and Denzil and has different activities and objects to explore, such as musical play, an adventure playground and Boj’s Burrow.

Safari Academy

Opened in 2017, the Safari Academy is an outstanding, sustainably built facility, designed specifically for visiting schools. The modern, state-of-the-art building features five classrooms to provide interactive education for groups of all ages, from pre-schools and nurseries to university groups and adult learners. Groups can take part in a variety of activities to enhance in-school learning, including curriculum-linked guided tours, hands-on Discovery Sessions and workshops. The Academy is also home to accredited Animal Care courses and Teacher Open Days. Information on the Safari Academy can be found on the website: www.safariacademy.co.uk

Safari Lodges

New for 2021 were eight exclusive, luxury lodges and two premium cottages, designed to give guests an up-close and immersive overnight wildlife experience, like no other. The lodges are integrated into the newly updated safari, with spectacular views overlooking the African elephant or cheetah habitats. The two cottages are nestled into the walk-through Discovery Trail and have been expertly refurbished with Nepalese design influences.

In April 2022, giraffe and rhino lodges were added, giving breath-taking views of the white rhinos and allowing you to come eye-to-eye with giraffes. Then in September, four Tiger Lodges opened, allowing you to sleep a whisker away from critically endangered Sumatran tigers. Bookings are currently open for four new Lion Lodges, which will open in July 2023.

Safari Lodges short breaks include breakfast and dinner, spectacular views of the animals, admission to the Park during the day and Theme Park wristbands, during the summer season.

In fact, there are so many magical safaris; some may even find it hard to choose which is best to visit. That’s why Families Love Travel has compiled this list of Fun U.S. East Coast Safaris and Animal Parks for Families ! Six Flags Great Adventure & Safari

Jackson, New Jersey

Hand with a cell phone taking pictures of giraffe at Six Flags Animal Safari, one of the 5 US East Coast Safaris and Animal Parks for Families

As one of the best East Coast animal safaris and encounters for families, Six Flags Safari is like a giant family wonderland! Located in Jackson, New Jersey , this park boasts 1,200 animals from six continents across a 350-acre preserve. Kids will love every minute of this experience, between spotting elephants, rhinos, tigers, giraffes, and more during an hour-long ride. You’ll also pass through designated habitats, like The Americas, Africa, and Wild Plains, to learn how they’re unique! Of course, the best part is you’ll stay comfortable within your car — and the adrenaline rush won’t cost you much. Six Flag’s Safari Adventure is included in your theme park admission! This wonderful attraction also lasts 45 minutes, though we recommend visiting earlier in the day before wait times become lengthy. Definitely make the most of your visit here! Finally, be sure to make a reservation.

Other Experiences in the Park

Looking for more outdoor fun at one of the best safari zoos ? Six Flags Great Adventure & Safari also offers more opportunities to see these glorious creatures up close! In the popular Safari Off-Road Adventure , only available in the spring, a skilled driver will take families near wandering wild animals in their natural habitats. Keep an eye out for Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs and other exotic creatures! Afterward, the driver will also stop at Camp Aventura, where kids can zip line, pet reptiles, or feed birds. With so much to offer, this is truly one of the best drive-through safari parks near New Jersey!

Australian Grand Prix 2024: When is the race, qualifying, past results and where to watch

A fter two races in the Middle East in two weeks, Formula One returns with the Australian Grand Prix, which runs from Friday March 22 until Sunday March 24.

Once more the track that hosts the race is the Albert Park Circuit, as it has done since 1996. We have had a different winner every year since 2019 (the race was not held in 2020 and 2021).

The chances of that happening again look to be slim, with Max Verstappen already running away with the championship after four rounds.

What time do practice, qualifying and the race start?

Friday march 22.

First practice: 1.30am-2.30am GMT

Second practice: 5am-6am

Saturday March 23

Third practice: 1.30am-2.30am

Qualifying: 5am GMT

Sunday March 24

Australian Grand Prix 2024: 4am

What is the latest news?

Mercedes are planning on ‘experimenting’ with their 2024 car at the Australian Grand Prix, according to trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin.

The team sit fourth in the teams’ standings and have had another difficult start to the season, with their best race result after Bahrain and Saudi Arabia being George Russell’s fifth place in Sakhir.

“There’s definitely data that we’re picking through from Jeddah,” Shovlin said. “We’re also looking at data from the Bahrain race [and the] Bahrain test and we will come up with a plan for how we approach free practice in Melbourne. But it’s not just based on what we did in Jeddah.

“There’s a lot of work going on within the aerodynamics department, vehicle dynamics department.

“We’re trying to design some experiments there that will hopefully give us a direction that’s good for performance.”

“The balance wasn’t great. So those very fast corners, the walls aren’t particularly far away – so the ones where the driver wants a lot of confidence – and quite often we were snapping to oversteer if they really leaned on the tyres.

“And you can easily imagine how unsettling that is for the drivers. Now, that was a factor in qualifying and the race.

“In qualifying we were also suffering a bit with the bouncing. That was less of a problem in the race. There’s more fuel on the car. You’re going a bit slower. And that seemed to calm down, and wasn’t such an issue.

“And then the big one is we don’t really have enough grip there. So that’s one of the things that we are working hard on this week, because Melbourne has similar nature of corners.

“So we’re doing a lot of work to try and understand why did we not seem to have the grip of some of our close competitors.”

Who won last year’s Australian Grand Prix?

As with 18 other races out of the 22 from 2023, Max Verstappen was the winner in Melbourne. Lewis Hamilton scored a rare second-place for Mercedes, his best result of the season with Fernando Alonso on the podium for Aston Martin. The race had plenty of action, culminating in a couple of late stoppages and a huge restart crash. Only 12 drivers took the chequered flag.

Australian Grand Prix circuit length, distance and race distance

First Grand Prix: 1996

Number of laps: 58

Circuit length : 5.278km

Race distance: 306.124km

Race lap record: 1min20.235sec (Sergio Perez, 2023)

How to watch the Australian Grand Prix on television and on streaming

As with the past few years, Sky Sports F1 have every single practice session, qualifying and race live this year.

If you do not want to take out a full sky subscription then you can get access to the 2024 F1 season through Now TV which has 12 Sky Sports channels for £26 a month and a six-month minimum term.

If you want to catch extended highlights then Channel 4 is your go-to broadcaster, with their qualifying program on Saturday and their race program on Sunday. You can also sign up to Now TV on a race-by-race or month-by-month basis.

If you are outside of the UK then you can likely subscribe to F1’s own F1TV, which you can do so with a monthly subscription.

What are the current standings?

What are the odds for the winner of the race.

  • Experience East Africa

Highlights include the Mara/Serengeti eco-system which stretches from the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya to the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, creating one the best known wildlife viewing experiences in the world. Apart from excellent year round game view, the area also plays host to one of the greatest natural wonders of the animal world - The Great Wildebeest Migration.

Another highlight is seeing the endangered mountain Gorillas in their natural habitat in the rain forests of Uganda or Rwanda, a privilege afforded to a few, as a limited number of permits are issued each day.

Other wildlife viewing experiences include Amboseli National Park and the Chyulu Hills area, with Africa’s highest mountain, Mt. Kilimanjaro as a backdrop. Wild and arid Northern Kenya where local tribes have formed partnerships with ranch owners to protect the wildlife, game viewing in the caldera of the Ngorongoro Crater, wild and untouched Selous and much more.

From the Great Rift Valley with its beautiful Rift Valley lakes, to the wild beauty of semi-arid desert regions, rainforests, snow-capped mountains, vast savannah plains, white sandy palm fringed beaches and stunning coral reefs of the coast.

With a network of road and air travel from the modern cities and small towns to most of the main game viewing areas, guests have a choice of flying or driving and enjoying the stunning scenery of the countryside or a combination of both driving and flying. For the intrepid traveler getting to off-the-beaten-track areas adds to the adventure. There is also mobile phone connection and Wi-Fi in most of the areas; however it can be slow in some areas.

From luxurious hotels, camps and lodges, to good comfortable accommodation, hosted luxury bush homes, tree houses and camping under the stars. There is also an underwater room on Pemba Island!

Groups are one of our specialties. Maniago arrange special ceremonies with the village elders so that our groups can actively be a part of the ceremonies and experience these ancient cultures in a special way. Based on your groups interests, our itineraries could include hot buffet meals served in the middle of the wilderness or team building activities which are both competitive and fun, and often we include challenges with the local tribes, inspired by ancient traditions.

If you are travelling with children, Kids clubs at many of the hotels and lodges offer fun, yet educational activities. Kids learn unique skills like tracking animals, bush survival skills like making a fire with sticks and new cultural experiences through interaction with the local tribes.

Conservation, culture, history, archaeology, diving, water sports including some of the best fishing in the world and active safaris – there is something for everyone. A traditional safari could include elements based on your special interest, like a walking safari, horse riding, camel safari, white water rafting, bird watching or even mountain climbing – you can do anything from an easy day climb at Mt. Longonot, to climbing to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain.

East Africa has a number of different tribes and even though people in the cities have adopted a modern lifestyle, many of the tribes in the countryside are still deeply rooted in the ancient traditions and cultures. East Africa also has a rich Swahili culture at the coast. For centuries the Arabs, Indians and Portuguese traded in slaves, spices and gold at the shores and their influence reflects in the architecture, food and culture of the coastal areas. Explore ancient towns, stuck in time, like Stone Town on the spice Island of Zanzibar and Lamu in Kenya.

Kenya is a fascinating country to visit. Stunning natural beauty in diverse ecosystems, amazing wildlife, the Indian Ocean and its palm fringed islands and year round good weather, are some of what Kenya offers. The country is steeped in history and has some of the most fascinating cultures in the world.

Tracking mountain gorilla – a trip of a life time!

Seeing the mountain gorilla in its natural habitat is often said to be one of the most thrilling and exhilarating wildlife experiences. Today the highly endangered mountain gorilla can only be found in the rainforests of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla Park in Uganda, and in Virunga National Park in the DRC. We offer tracking in Uganda and Rwanda and only a limited number of permits are issued each day, so we recommend that you contact us to book tracking permits well in advance.

There are also a number of exciting experiences you can do in Uganda and Rwanda before or after gorilla tracking.

Track other primates like the endangered Golden monkey, named for the golden-orange patches on it back and flanks, take a forest or bird walk, or a community walk where you can interact with the local community to see some of the community projects, how they use bananas to make a local beer and meet a traditional medicine men or you may be interested to visit to the Batwa pygmies and learn about their lifestyle.

A country of immense natural beauty, Uganda was described by Winston Churchill as 'The Pearl of Africa. Uganda also has a number of National Parks and from Bwindi you could take a trip to Ishasha, which is located in the South of Queen Elizabeth National park, and is famous for its tree climbing lions. At Murchison Falls National Park, the Nile squeezes through an 8m wide gorge before plunging into the "Devil's Cauldron". Activities include cruises where you may see hippo, crocodile, elephant, giraffe and other game on the river banks. There are several other parks you could visit including Kibale National Park to see chimpanzees and other primates.

For active, adrenaline seeking travelers there is hiking, white water rafting on the Nile in Jinja, Quad biking through farms, past villages and along the banks of the River Nile, kayaking and more.

Rwanda’s attractions include the beautiful Lake Kivu, where you can visit Amashuza Hot Springs or the Nyiragongo Volcano, famous for its lava lakes. The Nyungwe Forest is a haven for chimps and other wildlife and the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhonda, which are separated by a 1km wide strip of land, offer a great place to relax after gorilla tracking.

In Kigali you may want to visit the Genocide Memorial Centre. Although the genocide happened in 1994 and its memory still casts a shadow, at the museum you will also see how Rwanda has managed to find its feet and is now a thriving African country.

There are plenty of exciting new developments in Rwanda including Akagera National Park, which is situated in north eastern Rwanda. The park was founded in 1934 and in 2010 conservation efforts began in an effort to return the park to its former glory. In 2015 lions were re-introduced into the park after a 20-year absence and black rhinos were re-introduced in 2017. The Park also boasts almost 500 species of birds and offers stunning scenery with scenic savannah open plains, woodlands, lakes, swamp and grassy low mountains.

Disney seeks major expansion of California theme park to add more immersive attractions

Walking through the frosty, snow-covered hamlet of Arendelle from “Frozen,” or the bustling, critter-filled metropolis of “Zootopia” might be possible one day for visitors to Disney’s California theme parks.

That’s if Disney wins approval from local officials to expand its Anaheim resort over the next four decades.

The proposed expansion wouldn’t increase Disney’s 490-acre (488-hectare) footprint in Southern California or change what the company already has permission to build. But it could help the company develop new attractions. They could place rides and entertainment options on what is currently a sprawling, 50-acre (20-hectare) parking lot — and move parking for Disneyland to a multistory structure — all while keeping within the boundaries of a resort surrounded by residential neighborhoods.

“We know there are stories out there we haven’t told yet, like ‘Wakanda’ or ‘Coco’ or ‘Frozen’ or ‘Zootopia’,” said Rachel Alde, Disney’s senior vice president of global development and finance. “We know what kind of stories we would love to tell. We need to get the guidance on what we can build there so we can understand how.”

After a lengthy meeting late Monday, the city of Anaheim’s planning commission voted to recommend approval of the proposal for Disneyland, dubbed the “happiest place on Earth.” The project — which would require Disney to invest at least $1.9 billion in the theme park, lodging, entertainment and related uses over the next decade — still must be approved by the city council before taking effect. The council is expected to consider the project next month.

Less than a year after being picked to lead Walt Disney World's government after it was taken over by Gov. Ron DeSantis' allies, the district's administrator was appointed by the Florida governor on Monday, March 4, 2024 to run elections in the county that is home to the Disney theme park resort and other theme parks. Gilzean was appointed by DeSantis to be supervisor of elections in Orange County, Florida's fifth largest county. (Joe Burbank/Orlando Sentinel via AP, File)

Disney’s goal is to create what it calls more immersive experiences for tourists, similar to the attraction Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, which opened in California in 2019 . The company said it doesn’t yet know which stories would be central to the new developments, but the idea is to create areas like “Zootopia” in Shanghai Disneyland, where animal characters walk through a vibrant cityscape that resembles the setting of the film.

Right now, there isn’t enough room in the original Disneyland in California to build something on a large scale without affecting existing attractions, which are relished by loyal, long-time visitors to the company’s oldest theme park, Alde said.

During the hourslong planning commission meeting, staff for the city’s planning and building department recommended the application be approved.

The project “will allow us to continue Walt’s legacy of bringing Disney stories to life, right here in Anaheim,” Ken Potrock, president of Disneyland Resort, told the commission. Disneyland was founded in 1955 by Walt Disney.

Amid overwhelmingly positive public comment, neighbors and Anaheim residents praised Disney’s outreach to the community, including seeking feedback for noise and design. Other speakers in support included trade organizations, like the California Chamber of Commerce and the California Attractions and Parks Association, and local unions.

It’s the first time Disney has sought a major change to its California theme parks since the 1990s, when the company obtained approvals to turn its first park into a resort hub. It later added a second park, Disney California Adventure Park, and a shopping and entertainment area called Downtown Disney.

Disneyland was the second-most visited theme park in the world in 2022 with 16.8 million people coming through the gates, according to a report by the Themed Entertainment Association and AECOM.

Disney’s parks are a tourism magnet for Southern California and especially for Anaheim, which is Orange County’s most populous city and home to more than 345,000 people as well as a major league baseball team and national hockey league team. Hotel revenue typically makes up about half of Anaheim’s revenue, and is expected to climb to $236 million this year, according to city estimates.

“Visitors generate a tremendous amount of revenue for our city that allows us to invest in our neighborhoods,” said Erin Ryan, a spokesperson for the city of Anaheim. “Disney brings a lot of tourists here.”

The plan also would require the company to invest tens of millions of dollars in street improvements, affordable housing and other infrastructure in the city. Disney has held workshops to address residents’ questions about the proposal, including concerns about the company’s plan to absorb a local road into the theme park.
