Let your inhibitions fly away as you dive from a towering cliff in Roatan, Honduras, or soothe yourself in the cool, sparkling ocean water with a snorkel excursion in Costa Maya. Head for the tropics and vacation right with a Holland America Line Western Caribbean Cruise.
Things to Do on a Western Caribbean Cruise with Holland America Line
Amazingly blue water frames your Western Caribbean cruise experiences with Holland America. You’ll be trying rum cake in the Cayman Islands, visiting the Chichen Itza Mayan ruins in Cozumel and climbing up the most amazing waterfall in Jamaica.
- Dolphin Swim Adventure (Costa Maya, Mexico) It’s not every day you can swim with a dolphin, but in Costa Maya there is an arranged excursion where you can get face to face with these intelligent mammals. You can play with these creatures, pose for pictures and even pucker up for a kiss. After the initial meet you can hitch a ride on the dolphin’s pectoral fin and glide through the water.
- A Taste of Cayman (George Town, Cayman Islands) The first stop on the epicurean adventure is to the Cayman Islands Brewery where the only beer of the island is brewed. Next you’ll wind your way through the landmarks of George Town to the Rum Cake Center where you can sample this sweet treat, and then it’s time for the Caribbean’s favorite drink – rum. Head to the Seven Fathoms Rum Distillery where you’ll see the brewing process at work. Then after a sample tasting you’ll have the rest of the day to wander around or hit the beach.
- Good Hope Estate by Horse and Carriage (Ocho Rios, Jamaica) The Good Hope Estate was once the most highly regarded estate in all of the Caribbean. You’ll step back in time as you tour through the grounds on a horse-drawn carriage. The estate was built in the 1700s and was surrounded by 2,000 acres of fields. You can visit the pottery house, where today a resident potter works producing ceramics.
- Shipwreck Snorkeling and Beach (Roatan, Honduras) Spend a day at the Fantasy Island Beach Resort where you can lounge on the beautiful beach with a fruit punch and then embark on a 45-minute snorkel to view the shallow reef and a mysterious shipwreck. After this adventure you can stay at the beach or walk along a nature trail where you might see monkeys and iguanas.
- Chichen Itza Mayan Ruins by Motorcoach (Cozumel, Mexico) This important site was once the center of the Mayan empire. During this Holland America excursion you’ll be guided through the ruins and learn about the Mayan culture. You’ll visit a ball court, the Pyramid of Kukulcan and a temple where priests accurately calculated celestial events.
- Sky Explorer and Dunn’s River Falls (Falmouth, Jamaica) Climb up the Dunn’s River Falls, a unique waterfall that is built over natural steps. Then head to the Rainforest Sky Explorer where you’ll take a ride on a chairlift above the treetops. After this ride you can learn about the heritage and culture of the Jamaican people at the educational pavilion. There are lots of great views to see up at the Observation Tower.

More ships cruise the Caribbean islands than any other region in the world, and Caribbean cruises treat vacationers to crystal-clear waters, pristine beaches, abundant water sports and duty-free shopping. Caribbean cruises are divided into three regions: Western Caribbean cruises, Southern Caribbean cruises and Eastern Caribbean cruises.
Western Caribbean cruises can take you to see Mayan ruins on Mexico's Yucatan coast, snorkeling in the barrier reef off the coast of Belize or to Grand Cayman's Seven Mile Beach. Southern Caribbean cruises can take you to the beautiful beaches of Aruba, the rain forest of Martinique or the beautiful beaches of Barbados. Eastern Caribbean cruises may call on ports in the Bahamas, San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Turks and Caicos.
Because so many people cruise the Caribbean islands, you'll find the most competitive pricing and the best per-diem rates on a Caribbean cruise. This is especially true in the fall -- just before the start of the peak Caribbean cruise season -- when ships return to the Caribbean from Alaska and Europe.
Hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, but with the sophisticated radar and weather-tracking systems found on larger Caribbean cruise ships today, there is little cause for concern. Ships can easily change course to avoid storms and will substitute alternate Caribbean cruise ports as necessary.

- The Caribbean is blessed with continuously balmy, pleasant weather, making it a year-round cruising destination.
- Caribbean cruises last 4 to 14 nights.
- Many ships will alternate 7-night eastern and western itineraries, giving passengers the option of purchasing back-to-back cruises and remaining on one ship for a 14-night sailing.
- Caribbean cruises are particularly kid-friendly, making them ideal for family getaways. Most ships have children's programs, youth counselors and children's activity centers.

A new extra-long sailing from Holland America Line could be the ticket for those aspiring to visit every continent. The Seattle-based cruise line just announced what is arguably its most ambitious world voyage yet: a 132-day sailing that visits 39 countries and 47 ports.
“We asked thousands of past guests and travel advisors for their opinions about the perfect Grand World Voyage, so this may be one of our most thoroughly researched routes ever for a world cruise,” said Gus Antorcha, president of Holland America Line, in the press announcement. “This itinerary includes destinations we know guests love, [and is] packed with memorable moments and overnight stays. We are purposefully visiting fewer ports to allow more time to explore the destinations we visit and to create a voyage that does not feel rushed.”
The sailing departs from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on January 4, 2026, and starts the round-the-world tour with stops in the Caribbean. From there, the ship will hug the eastern coast of South America, making stops in Brazil and Uruguay before heading to the Falkland Islands and then Antarctica for four days. (Note that the Antarctica portion will be a scenic cruise only—guests won’t be able to set foot on land due to the ship’s size.)
After the White Continent, it’s over to Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world, and then onward to the fjords of Chile and the city of Santiago, where the ship will take a hard left toward Easter Island and French Polynesia. On the other side of the International Date Line, passengers will first visit New Zealand and Australia before spending time in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. Then it’s through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal to Egypt and on to the Mediterranean and northern Europe before crossing the Atlantic to wrap up back in Fort Lauderdale.
Along the way, guests will have the opportunity to experience the nightlife in the nine cities the ship will make overnight calls in, including Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Papeete, Tahiti; Sydney, Australia; Bali, Indonesia; Singapore; Malé, Maldives; Safaga (Luxor) and Alexandria (Cairo), Egypt; and Lisbon, Portugal.
Passengers will call the 1,432-passenger Volendam home for the months-long sailing.
Courtesy of Holland America Line
The journey will take place on Holland America Line’s Volendam , the cruise line’s smallest ship, with space for 1,432 guests. Cabins range from the 160-square-foot inside cabins (featuring two twin beds, a seating area, closet space, a small washroom, and no windows) to the 940-square-foot Pinnacle Suite (with a queen-size bed, a large sitting room, a dining room for eight people, a full bath and a half bath, a walk-in closet, and a 190-square-foot balcony).
Built in 1999, Volendam is more of a traditional-style cruise ship when compared to newer vessels with loads of bells and whistles—you won’t find climbing walls, hydrotherapy pools, or many of the extravagant extras on more modern builds. However, you will find six restaurants (ranging from a casual café to a steakhouse), a fitness center (featuring workout machines, a basketball and volleyball court, and pools), a spa, a casino, and a kids club.
As of press time, the sailing is only available as a future cruise request, meaning those keen on joining can make a deposit (either by calling HAL’s world cruise reservation desk at 1-800-522-3399 or by contacting a travel advisor) to get first dibs on staterooms when the itinerary does become available on the cruise line’s website. And, for a limited time, guests who book now will receive up to $2,000 in onboard credit per guest, a free Wi-Fi package, and complimentary round-trip airport transfers to and from the Fort Lauderdale airport.
There’s no word yet on how much the sailing will cost, but for some context, HAL’s 124-day Grand World Voyage in 2025 starts at $25,000 per person for an inside cabin—and that sailing doesn’t visit Antarctica.

This 132-day World Cruise Will Circle the Planet in 2026 — and Visit All 7 Continents
The itinerary is Holland America's most ambitious to date.
Courtesy of Holland America Line
For those looking to visit all seven of the world's continents, you'll soon be able to check off all those boxes with a single trip. Holland America just announced a 2026 Grand World Voyage that visits each one over 132 days in a true circumnavigation of the planet.
Sailing round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the 1,432-passenger Volendam, the voyage will depart on Jan. 4, 2026, sailing south along the east coast of South America, all the way to Antarctica. (It's important to note that the Antarctica portion of the trip will be scenic cruising only — you won't be able to get off the ship and set foot on land.)
From Antarctica, the Volendam will cross the South Pacific (and stop at Easter Island!), visit Australia, and continue to Southeast Asia.
Next up is a journey across the Indian Ocean with visits to the Maldives and Sri Lanka, followed by a transit of the Suez Canal. After a few stops in the Mediterranean, the ship will make for Northern Europe, then finish with a transatlantic crossing to take guests back to Fort Lauderdale.

All in, the Grand World Voyage will visit 47 ports in 39 countries, and there will be nine overnight calls in destinations like Rio de Janeiro and Bali.
"We asked thousands of past guests and travel advisors for their opinions about the perfect Grand World Voyage, so this may be one of our most thoroughly researched routes ever for a world cruise," Gus Antorcha, Holland America's president, said during the announcement, which took place aboard the Zuiderdam, which is currently sailing the 2024 Grand World Voyage. "This itinerary includes destinations we know guests love, packed with memorable moments and overnight stays. We are purposefully visiting fewer ports to allow more time to explore the destinations we visit and to create a voyage that does not feel rushed."
Though the voyage isn't yet open for bookings, you can register your interest through your travel advisor or by calling Holland America World Cruise Reservations at 1-800-522-3399. For context, the 124-day Grand World Voyage in 2025 starts at $24,999 per cabin based on double occupancy.
7 continents in 4 months: Holland America Line reveals 2026 world cruise
If visiting all seven continents is on your travel bucket list, a new cruise from Holland America Line will make it easy for you.
The cruise line’s 2026 Grand World Voyage will traverse the globe over 132 days, stopping at 47 ports in 39 countries. Passengers just have to get themselves to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the trip’s round-trip departure point.
“We asked thousands of past guests and travel advisors for their opinions about the perfect Grand World Voyage, so this may be one of our most thoroughly researched routes ever for a world cruise,” Holland America’s president, Gus Antorcha, said when announcing the itinerary to guests currently sailing on the line’s 2024 Grand World Voyage on Monday, according to a news release. “This itinerary includes destinations we know guests love, packed with memorable moments and overnight stays."
When is the 2026 Grand World Voyage?
The cruise will set sail on Jan. 4, 2026, on the line’s 1,432-guest Volendam ship which launched in 1999.
Where will the cruise sail?
Antorcha said the cruise will visit fewer ports than previous Grand World Voyages “to allow more time to explore the destinations we visit and to create a voyage that does not feel rushed.”
Passengers will head down South America’s east coast before making their way to Antarctica. There, they will have a four-day Antarctic Experience (though guests won’t disembark due to the ship’s size ).
The ship will then head to destinations like the South Pacific and Australia, with time to explore the Great Barrier Reef. The remainder of the voyage includes Singapore, the Maldives , the Mediterranean and northern Europe. The trip will wind down with a transatlantic crossing before one last stop in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Passengers will stay overnight at nine ports, including Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Sydney, Australia; Bali in Indonesia and Alexandria, Egypt. There will also be five late-night departures in Civitavecchia, Italy, Oslo, Norway, and San Juan, among others.
Other highlights include visits to Easter Island, Adamstown in the Pitcairn Islands, and Bordeaux, France.
What is a world cruise?: Here's what sets the months-long voyages apart
How much does the cruise cost?
Pricing info is not yet available, but an inside cabin on the line's 2025 Grand World Voyage currently starts at $24,999.
Travelers can call 1-800-522-3399 or contact their travel adviser to make a future cruise request for the 2026 itinerary and get priority booking confirmation before the cruise opens for sale to the public in May.

Holland America wants travelers to live on a cruise ship for 4 ½ months while it sails to 39 countries on all 7 continents — see what it'll be like
- Holland America Line announced a 2026 around-the-world cruise .
- The 132-day itinerary includes 47 ports in 39 countries on all seven continents.
- Longer sailings like this one are all the rage right now.
In 2026, the only flight you'll have to take to visit 39 countries in less than half a year is the one from your home to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The catch? From there, you can travel around the world on a 25-year-old ship.
If the concept sounds familiar, it's probably because you're thinking of Royal Caribbean's nine-month Ultimate World Cruise , one of TikTok's first obsessions in 2024.
Royal Caribbean's around-the-world sailing isn't a one-off. Quite the opposite: It's part of a growing interest in longer cruises.
And companies like Holland America have taken note of this shift. To satisfy travelers' appetite for extended sailings, the cruise line released a slate of itineraries ranging from 25 to 59 days long this time last year. Most are set to sail roundtrip, to, or from North America.
But none of these one to two-month cruises compare to the cruise line's new 2026 "Grand World Voyage," a whopping 4 ½-month journey to all seven continents.
Holland America says its 1,432-guest Volendam ship will set sail in January 2026 on an "east-to-west route" from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to 47 ports in 39 countries on all seven continents.
From sunny Florida, the ship will sail down to chilly Antarctica by way of eastern South America.
Volendam is scheduled to spend four days around Antarctica. Good luck on the infamous Drake Passage .
The icy destination isn't common on most around-the-world itineraries. But the cruise line seems partial to it: Holland America's 133-day "pole-to-pole" cruise , sailing to Antarctica and the Arctic Circle, is scheduled for January 2025.
From the itinerary's southernmost destination, the ship is set to venture back north to the South Pacific Islands like Easter Island, New Zealand, and Australia.
Then, it will set sail to Southeast and South Asia, the Maldives, and Egypt before its final few stops around northern Europe.
With the exception of two ports in Egypt, the Middle East and Africa have been largely left off the 132-day plan.
Almost 4 ½ months and 39 countries later, the journey will conclude back in Fort Lauderdale.
It's a long itinerary for a compact ship: The 781-foot-long Volendam is one of Holland America's smallest and oldest vessels.
Compared to this older counterpart, Holland America's newest ship, the Rotterdam, is almost 200 feet longer and can accommodate 1,236 more guests. However, the cruise line tapped a ship of Volendam's size to give guests a more "intimate experience."
Holland America's vessel of choice is larger than the ones being used by more luxurious companies Regent Seven Seas, Oceania, and Silversea's 2024 world cruises, which all have guest capacities of less than 700 people.
But the Volendam is still significantly smaller than Royal Caribbean's Ultimate World Cruise vessel of choice: The 965-foot-long, 2,476-guest Serenade of the Seas .
And unlike Royal Caribbean's new mega-ships , the Volendam has no waterslides or wild rides. Instead, the 10-deck vessel features six restaurants (including a café), five bars, two pools, and activities like pickleball courts.
Compared to other global itineraries, Holland America’s 47-port world cruise might seem light.
Ultra-luxury Regent Seven Seas and Silversea's ongoing 4 ½-month world cruises each include at least 65 ports.
But busier doesn't always mean better.
Guests will have more time to spend at the scheduled ports by sacrificing additional destinations, Gus Antorcha, Holland America's president, said in a news release. (The ship is scheduled for overnights at nine popular destinations, including Bali, Indonesia, and Papeete, Tahiti.)
A spokesperson for Holland America told Business Insider that details about the itinerary's fares aren't available yet.
