How to Fast Travel – Skyrim

Fast travelling is going to be your best friend in Skyrim. The world is massive, and you’ll be juggling a ton of quests constantly sending you to each corner of it. To make sure you don’t waste your life running around the map, here’s how to fast travel and save yourself a lot of headaches.

First, you’ll need to make sure you’re outside. You won’t be able to fast travel inside a cave, building, or other structure. Next, make sure you aren’t in combat and that there aren’t any enemies nearby. You won’t be able to fast travel unless you’re safe. And last up on the warnings list, you cannot fast travel if you’re overburdened, or carrying more in item weight than the max capacity your stamina affords you.

Then, pull out your map. Hit Circle on PlayStation and B on Xbox to bring up your menu, then hit the down button to head to your map. Move your cursor over a landmark you’ve visited at least once before, be it a city, a cave, or other notable location. Select this, and choose to fast travel there at the prompt. You’ll then find yourself magically teleported to your desired spot.

Fast Travel is a method of travel in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim . It is a way of quickly "teleporting" to any previously discovered location . The travel takes place almost instantaneously in real-world time through a loading screen , but in game time will still pass by as if the Dragonborn had walked there. When using fast travel, the time elapsed may be longer than the time it would have taken to run to the destination, especially when the distance is short.

Fast Travel can be done via the world map or by using one of the carriages stationed near the main gate of many cities. Fast travel via world map is free, but can only be done to a location that has already been discovered. Travel via carriage is limited to major cities, regardless if they have been visited or not before, with a fee relative to distance and the size of the destination city (for example it costs more to travel from Whiterun to Dawnstar than from Windhelm to Solitude even though the distance between Windhelm and Solitude is greater). The Hearthfire DLC allows the Dragonborn to hire a carriage for their homestead , which will also go to smaller cities  and towns ( Darkwater Crossing , Dragon Bridge , Ivarstead , Karthwasten ,  Kynesgrove , Old Hroldan Inn , Riverwood , Rorikstead , Shor's Stone , and Stonehills ).

With Dawnguard , fast travel can also be done between Castle Volkihar and the main island of Skyrim by boat. With Dragonborn , the initial trip to Solstheim must be by boat. (Conventional fast travel can be used later, between the docks at Windhelm and Raven Rock .)

Conditions [ ]

The fast travel cannot be done while in any of the following conditions:

• While indoors
• While jumping
• While falling
• While mounting or dismounting a horse .
• While being too close to enemies
• While being pursued by enemies/ Hold Guards
• While taking health damage (e.g. from poison )
• Riding on horseback.
• Under the effect of a Fortify Carry Weight potion that is strong enough. There is no limit on fast travel distance while the potion is in effect. However, the effect of the potion immediately wears off after the arrival causing the Dragonborn to be overburdened again.

Fast travel time [ ]

Approximate time to travel between cities/towns wearing Light Armor , measured by in-game hours:

• The amount and type of armor worn affects how much time passes during fast travel.
• Fast traveling while on foot or on horseback takes the same amount of time. The only difference will be how the Dragonborn arrives: on foot next to the horse, or on horseback.
• Any positive or negative effects (such as from a disease ) will still progress during fast travel.
• Neither the Dragonborn, their horse, or any companion will encounter any enemies during fast travel.
• Due to the respawning of enemies , dragons and creatures being scripted to happen when fast travelling; if fast travel is never used, after a certain time, encounters with them will reduce noticeably.
•  PC     360     PS3    When arriving at a location by fast travel, random creatures can spawn in front of the Dragonborn. For example, a non-hostile bandit might spawn every time they fast-travel, who can be talked to but will become hostile if attacked. A similar bug happens when fast-traveling to Falkreath , causing all of the Hold Guards to spawn at the entrance to the city.
•  PC    Fast traveling with followers to northern cities like Windhelm or the College of Winterhold can trigger a sliding effect on arrival. Normally, this effect is not critical; however, it is possible to sometimes slide for a very long distance and fall from a cliff.
•  360    After waiting in a location for a long time (two or three weeks), or if multiple other characters have been played before returning to play as the affected character, fast traveling to a location might spawn enemies that have made into thralls (or raised as zombies) in the past. They will attack each other unless they are in the same faction. (Only bandits or spiders, for example).
•  360     PS3    If fast travel is selected to any location and the back button is immediately pressed, the fast travel will not occur, the game will no longer be paused and the character menu will not be able to be opened. The pause menu can be opened, but saving the game will be the only option that functions, not loading an existing save. The "quit game" option is available, however, allowing a more time consuming reload of the game by saving and exiting the game. Reloading the game will fix this.
•  360 (Fix)     PS3 (Fix)    Manually shut down the console, as any attempt to open the Xbox or PS3 menu will result in the loading circles on every option and they will never load.
•  PC     360    Fast traveling on horseback to the College of Winterhold may cause one to appear several feet above the bridge.
•  PC (Fix)    Quickly Fast traveling to another place before the horse falls off may solve the problem.
•  PC     360     PS3    Sometimes, when attempting to fast travel, the game will say "You cannot fast travel while guards are pursuing you," even if guards are not pursuing the Dragonborn.
•  360     PS4    Fast traveling from a snowy location can sometimes cause it to snow in areas that do not normally experience snowy weather conditions.
•  PC (Fix)    Fast traveling to any location will fix this.
•  PC (Fix)    Exiting the game to the desktop restarting will fix this.
• By opening the Journal and pressing the "show on map" button for quest objectives it is possible to access the map, and thus fast travel even under circumstances that normally prevent access to the map, such as after the Dragonborn dies or at the beginning of the game while Helgen is under attack.

Skyrim Mod Changes the Rules for Fast Travelling

A mod for The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim limits fast traveling capabilities, which forces players to truly stop and admire the game's scenery.

For Skyrim fans who feel they may be using fast travel a little too much, a mod for the game adds some limitations to the feature which can force the Dragonborn to stop and smell the digital roses. With its high fantasy setting, complete with a vast open world for exploration, not to mention affording the chance to fight ancient dragons, TES5 is truly one for the ages and is even considered an RPG suitable for newcomers to the genre.

Part of what makes the game so accessible is that it gives players the option to fast travel, whereby they can instantly move between already discovered locations at whim. While fast travel is important in many open-world titles , there are some who feel it can interrupt the more immersive role-playing elements. As such, there are a number of players who choose to not use it, but for those who can't help themselves and don't want to switch to Survival Mode, there is a way to stem this temptation.

As spotted by PC Gamer, Nexus Mods user digitalApple released "Regional Fast Travel," a mod for Skyrim that changes the way this travelling feature works. According to the description, fast travel can be disabled if the location a player wants to travel to is in a different region, is not considered a "habitation or dwelling," or the area has not been assigned any data that makes it a "location" as such. There are also some additional rules that can be enabled, such as not being able to fast travel to the College of Winterhold until completing the "First Lessons" quest, as well as stipulations for other guilds and factions.

Given such limitations, it almost puts Skyrim on par with the third entry in the Bethesda franchise, Morrowind . That game too had limitations when it came to fast travel, such as having to use transportation to and from settlements, forcing players to wander the land by foot as the game had no horses to speak of. Fortunately, as Morrowind is one of the smallest Elder Scrolls releases in terms of map size , this was less daunting than in other entries in the series.

In any case, it shows that people like digitalApple are still giving a lot of love to TES5 . Over the years, modders have attempted to improve on Skyrim 's vanilla format , adding so much more to the already expansive title. It's one of the reasons the epic RPG is still going strong to this day.

It has different features for every expansion. For example, Hearthfire gets a lot of food-related additions, including recipes. It makes the AI of NPCs smarter during combat, including animals and other creatures. Different types of NPCs will act differently according to their type or occupation.

For example, predatory animals in groups will attack you more, while they have a higher chance of running away when alone. Human NPCs whose work doesn't usually involve fighting will be less competent in battle than ones who fight often. The realism of the combat AI makes everything much more interesting and immersive.

Even Better Quest Objectives

Some quests in the game can seem somewhat ambiguous, especially the one about the Stones of Barenziah. The game doesn't even give you general locations to investigate. Instead, it wants you to explore the entire open world and keep your eyes peeled for 24 gemstones that could be anywhere. They could be in a chest or entombed in a dungeon; you name it.

Ever try to save enough money for the best houses in the game? The quickest way there is to sell all the loot you can carry. Unfortunately, merchants in vanilla Skyrim have a relatively meager sum of gold to trade. This can make your enrichment process incredibly slow.

Rich Skyrim Merchants by EddieTheEagle increases the money held by many NPCs who can sell to you by two, five, or even ten times their normal amount. You can receive plenty of money if you sell them quality goods. The best thing about this mod is its compatibility; you can put it anywhere in your loader if you don't have any other mods that modify merchants' gold.

Okay, so "cheating" is frowned upon in games, but Cheat Mod by TheRealElianora doesn't use bots to drag down networks. Instead, it enables you to carry and craft various things. It's perfect for if you'd prefer to focus on activities that aren't crafting-related, or if you're just impatient.

The mod sets up the "Warmaiden's Forge" in Whiterun -- a chest with 1,000 of every crafting ingredient you need, plus 100,000 pieces of gold in various strongboxes. If you're wondering how to possibly carry all that, not to worry. The mod also adds a ring that increases your carry limit by 500,000.

Just take care not to include this if you're using the Open Cities mod. It doesn't work!

Rain And Snow FX

This mod by Chesko does not make significant changes to the weather system in the game. It still rains and snows as usual, with prevalent overcast in-game days. However, when your character does happen to get caught in a storm or blizzard, their armor and clothes become visibly wet or frostbitten.

That's a very nice touch, considering that vanilla Skyrim doesn't do anything to make it seem like your gear is exposed to environmental conditions. You could jump in a pool of water and emerge drier than a desert. This mod fixes that, so it's great if you care about amplifying immersion.

However, with the Better Jumping mod, you can now jump while sprinting, double jump, and adjust how high you jump. Realistic Needs and Diseases

Skyrim can be too easy for many veterans of the game. If you fall into this class, or simply crave a more difficult experience, then you'll want to download the Realistic Needs and Diseases mod. This essentially turns Skyrim into a hardcore survival experience, making it so your character needs to eat, sleep, rest, drink, and do everything else a human requires. You can also be infected with diseases that need to be cured, otherwise you'll perish.

Frostfall - Hypothermia Camping Survival

Building off the Realistic Needs and Diseases mod comes the Frostall mod. This adds a cold-weather system to Skyrim that cannot be taken lightly. From frigid temperatures to cold water, you need to be mindful of every surrounding on the map if you want to stay alive. This mod requires the Campfire mod to work, as that's going to be your primary way of staying warm with this mod installed. I don't recommend mixing Frostfall with Realistic Needs and Diseases, though, as the mods might not mix well and are two entirely different experiences.

Breezehome FullyUpgradable

There are too many house mods in Skyrim to name, but arguably one of the best overall ones is Breezehome . This installs a wonderfully designed home right inside of Whiterun and features plenty of amenities, including a weapons rack, crafting stations, a follower's room, and more. This version of the mod also allows you to fully upgrade the home to feature even more amenities.

I recommend also looking through Nexus Mods for more home mods, as there are plenty to choose from across every location in Skyrim. You can also download the base Breezehome mod , which doesn't come fully upgraded.

Opulent Thieves Guild

The Thieves Guild is an immensely popular faction in Skyrim, and the Opulent Thieves Guild mod only enhances your experience with it. The mod overhauls the guild's headquarters as well as the Ragged Flaggon, but only in stages. The locations become better-looking, new NPCs are added, and other fixes are made as you progress through Skryim and the Thieves Guild questline.

TrueHUD - HUD Additions

However, one major caveat with the mod is you won't get to see the individual locations of the stones, so this quest still relies on your ability to know their general location.

Wildcat - Combat of Skyrim

If Skyrim's combat system is boring you, I suggest completely changing it up by using the Wildcat combat mod. All it does is give the various vendors around the map more gold in their inventory, allowing you to sell a greater number of items to them. This completely eliminates the time spent waiting for a vendor's inventory to restock. The mod allows you to customize how much gold the vendors have, ranging from two, five, or ten times the normal amount.

Darkend is another DLC-sized mod, but this one doesn't feature any sort of questline. Instead, you travel to a new island, fight never-before-seen enemies, and explore several different areas in the pursuit of a set of ancient weapons. The Soulsborne genre inspires this mod, so don't expect any quest markers or help when you arrive on the mysterious island. You'll have to figure things out for yourself in this punishing, yet rewarding mod.

Thunderchild - Epic Shouts and Immersion

Shouts are an incredibly unique and useful combat mechanic in Skyrim, and the Thunderchild mod enhances your experience with them. The mod adds 29 new shouts that all have different effects as well as several other features to the game. There are even bug fixes for the existing shouts in Skyrim, so this mod is truly an all-encompassing way to experience the mechanic.

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.
