Diary of a First Child

Pizza Express School Visits & Home Educators

Some time during last summer, we booked a home ed visit for one of the Pizza Express School Visit sessions, and though we had to wait several months for our session, we arrived on the agreed date and had a fantastic and informative visit.

Pizza Express School Visits offer groups the opportunity to not only see how pizza is made but also to get hands on and involved. For some children this is a brand new experience, of course, and for our group there was a mix of abilities too, considering our participants ranged from about 3 – 14 years.

They spoke about the different steps they went through, the chef demonstrated, and the children were able to take their own dough ball, and knead it, twist it and shape it into circles – they even got to toss it up into the air.

They placed their circles into pizza trays, then prepared them as Margherita pizzas. Pizza hut dough is dairy free, so there were some dairy free pizzas and some regular.

There was a lot of spinning and fixing and sorting with the final touches – origanum and salt and pepper – added to finish.

While the pizzas were labelled and popped into the oven, the children had a tour of the kitchens, the fridges, and the fresh produce stores, before getting their pizzas back, and tucking in.

Pizza Express School Visits are open to any groups – they don’t have to be a school group –  and you can simply book up your space, free of charge. Each child gets to take away a pizza and the whole group learning experience is valuable and fun. It can be worth it to learn how to use a Pizza Oven – Pellethead , especially if you want to enjoy some delicious pizza.

You can book your own visit here .

Here’s a little video from Pizza Express to tell you more about it:

4 food related school trips

We look at four school trips with a tasty outlook on learning.

Child baking

There are a number of ways that you can teach your class about the food industry and healthy eating, with nods towards Science, History and Business Studies amongst the many curriculum links that these visits offer.

Initiatives such as the Tesco Eat Happy Project use online communication such as Google+ Hangouts to give children a virtual school trip. Those behind the Eat Happy Project say the approach will ensure that children from deprived backgrounds do not miss out, because it offers “a cheaper way of giving children access to overseas field trips”.

But sceptics say that the online ‘trips’ will never be able to match a genuine outdoors experience. From farm trips to learning how food is made in one of the most popular UK chain restaurants, here are five outside the classroom school trip ideas on how to keep your pupils hungry to learn.

1. Pizza Express

Yes, we’ve all eaten them – children and teachers alike – but do you really know what goes into making your favourite margherita?

If you want to find out then the Pizza Express chain runs free visits for local Primary schools, where the staff turn their kitchens into classrooms. A chef teaches your class how to make the pizza including how to knead the dough.

The kids should have a great experience while picking up some useful skills as well and an ingredients quiz should teach them about the various food stuffs that go into making their pizzas.

2. Walk Eat Talk Eat

Walk Eat Talk Eat leads foody tours around London and its not just relegating the school children to chicken nuggets and chips. The company takes students to street food markets, cafes, delis, restaurants and shops to see and taste different foods first-hand.

WETE has already done tours themed around celebratory food, food from around the world, traditional British food and sweets and treats.

Pupils will learn about the history of the area in which they tour. On the schools’ version of the East End tour they try mini pies from Spitalfields Market; visit one of the Bangladeshi shops on Brick Lane for a samosa or some pakora; go via a market stall to try some Italian street food; and finish with some unusual pastries from a shop that’s all about traditional British products.

2. Manor Farm

If you want to teach your class about how their food is produced, they can quite literally walk their way through the food chain on Manor Farm in Leicestershire; see wheat grow, bread made at the on-site bakery and loaves sold in the farm shop.

The farm hosts regular school visits throughout the year and takes a great deal of pride in passing on its excitement towards sustainable farming, and the food chain as a whole, to the next generation.

3. Weald & Downland Open Air Museum

For food education with a historical twist, this educational Kent attraction has a regular programme of domestic and craft demonstrations for students to join in with, including cooking in its Tudor kitchen and milling flour in its working watermill.

The Victorian Cooking workshop for Key Stage 2, which takes place in the onsite Walderton House, considers the contents of a 19th century grocer’s basket and where in the world it was grown. Students will compare what we may buy today with what was available to the family who lived in a house similar to Walderton in the Victorian era.

The class then helps with a simple Victorian recipe for drop scones, which will be cooked on a griddle over an open fire. At the end everyone will have the opportunity to sample the dish.

4. Food For Life

The Food for Life (FFL) project from the Soil Association encourages education about food and healthy eating. Initiatives such as its ‘Visit a Farm’ are aimed at getting children outdoors to experience a real working farm reconnecting them with where food comes from.

FFL has worked with farms across the UK to help them prepare for educational school visits, so pupils can get the most out of their trip. It suggest to schools that by building good links with their local farm, they may want to set up a regular programme of visits throughout the year and learn about the natural cycles from planting right through to harvesting.

Some schools have actually set up their own farmers markets on school grounds, inviting in local farmers and other suppliers to sell their produce.

FFL has created a farm finder so teachers can look up their local farms which are involved.

Food is at the very heart of PizzaExpress – from the triple-certified coffee we serve in our restaurants, to our free School Visits where kids roll up their sleeves and get cooking. Whether you’re dining with friends in our restaurants or relaxing on the sofa with PizzaExpress At Home, great-tasting food matters. Just as much as making sure everyone can enjoy it. Everyone, including those on special diets and kids, can dine with us.

The nation’s favourite pizzeria, PizzaExpress , has reopened its Brindleyplace pizzeria.

Located amid the vibrant nightlife of Brindleyplace, the doors are now open for dine-in and dine-out customers.

For the month of September, same household groups can now get a slice of the action with a free drink with every main.

The restaurant also incorporates the latest new safety measures that enhance guest and team protection and blend with the lively buzz of the pizzeria. These include a more physically distanced layout, hand sanitiser stations, enhanced hygiene procedures and cleaning measures, along with regular health checks of team members. The online booking service makes it easy to reserve a table, and a new digital menu and cashless payment have been introduced to assist and reassure customers.

Mark Jones, PizzaExpress Brindley Place Operations Manager said:

“We’re proud to reopen our doors to the people of Birmingham once again and look forward to welcoming household back into our pizzeria for a slice of what they love. As ever, our top priority remains on the safety and wellbeing of our teams and customers and so far, the response to our online booking system, new digital menus and cashless payments has been fantastic, and we encourage everyone to use these services as much as possible.”

“Our customers can enjoy a wonderful experience in our new setting whilst enjoying delicious pizza and all of our menu favourites. We’re also offering a free drink[1] with every main until 30 September, so look forward to welcoming more customers back through our doors.”

Reception had a great morning at Pizza Express making our own pizzas. We explored the texture of the uncooked dough before stretching it to the  correct shape and size. We learnt about the ingredients in the tomato sauce on pizzas and then added the toppings to our dough bases. Our pizzas were then put into the very hot pizza oven to cook. We had lots of fun and all thought that our creations were delicious!

Please don’t go to Samara Beach…

Last Updated on January 15, 2024

Costa Rica may be a well established destination on the tourist trail, but the Nicoya Peninsula is still very much the country’s own Wild Wild West. Lucky for us, what started off as a transportation nightmare led us to discover our favorite beach on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast: Samara Beach.

Table of Contents

Why Visit Samara Beach?

samara beach surfer

As soon as we arrived, we were enchanted by the beauty of the beach from the start. We basked in the late afternoon sun, admiring the tropical palm trees which line the miles of wide, white sand beach. The town itself is really only a collection of hotels and restaurants along one road perpendicular to the coast and a smattering of hotels and beach lounges on the beach.

samara beach cloudy sunset

The ocean here is shallow, and the waves are present enough to learn to surf but unforgiving enough to enjoy a day splashing around in them, not the case in many locations up and down the Pacific coast from Mexico through Nicaragua (exception: San Juan del Sur ). After a day in the waves, there are sunset beach lounges with mellow music, creative cocktails and international cuisine. The magical sunsets during our stay turned the sky various shades of purple and pink, causing a wall of bikini-clad amateur paparazzi to form, trying to capture the stunning scenery.

Sunset

Samara Beach is the Costa Rican vacation we really wanted, fulfilling perfectly the image still being sold in the travel brochures. The level of tourism here makes for the perfect peaceful escape – all of the organization you need and none of the banana-boat and disco clubs you don’t. The problem with Samara Beach is that it is at its tipping point, and while the balance is now is perfect, more tourists arriving each year might convert the place into another overly Americanized beach like Montezuma , Playa del Coco or Jaco Beach (lined with Quiznos and Pizza Huts).

Afterword: I first visited Samara Beach in 2011, and I have gotten many emails from readers over the past years asking me if Samara “was over”. i.e. if it had been discovered by mainstream tourism. After a short return in 2012, I finally returned to Samara this past winter and I am happy to report that I found the exact same tranquil beach paradise that I found when I first ended up in Samara a decade ago.

  • Come here for: breakfast/brunch
  • Takes reservations: no

Bohemia Café  in Sámara has a beach vibe surrounded by beauty and is undoubtedly the perfect place to eat and enjoy the tranquility of the whole area. The cafe serves excellent fresh, healthy food and coffee.

Frederico, the owner, is a charming and friendly soul. The incredible hospitality enhances a visit to this local café, often bringing out an inviting and relaxed atmosphere.

This little cafe offers homemade granola, healthy salads, yummy juices, strong coffee, crepes, paninis, and abundant vegan options. My favorite brunch meal is actually called “The Brunch,” which comes with two eggs, homemade bread, potato gems, and fruit. It was delicious! Their coffee is also really strong!

Bohemia Café is open from 8 am to 2 pm every day except Sunday.

2. Rosa – Best Casual Dinner Restaurant

Poke Bowl at Rosa in Samara, Costa rica

  • Location: Nex to the Pali Supermarket in the open-air dining area
  • Average Price: $28 USD for the main dishes
  • Come here for: grilled meat,   burgers, and seafood
  • Takes reservations: yes

Set back off the street away from the city’s traffic,  Rosa  is a laid-back restaurant right in front of a vibrant market area with local vendors and entertaining musicians – a pleasant view to watch as you enjoy your meal.

Rosa offers an excellent European dining experience in Sámara. It is a small lovely place with open-air indoor and outdoor dining.

The menu includes tasty diverse delicacies from grilled meats to pan-fried seafood accompanied by a selection of delicious wines and cocktails. This is a great place to try out the meat combo or strictly vegan choices. Be warned, though, the menu and specials often change, so come prepared to eat something not mentioned here!

During our visit, the host, who also appeared to be the owner, recommended we try the tapas to start. We had the tuna poke bowl and meat platter for our mains – both were delicious. Unfortunately, we didn’t hang around for dessert and instead when next door to Sweeties by Celia (mentioned lower on this list!)

Other options on the menu include; steak with shrimps, large portions of meaty country-style ribs, grilled squid, Chicken Parmesan, ceviche, filet steak with pepper sauce, steak with Roquefort sauce. I really want to try the ribs – they look so yummy!

Rosa offers superb casual dining for families and special date nights for couples. The owner, Adeline, is a charismatic and efficient host with a team of attentive staff serving excellent food, great live music, value for money, and a lovely ambiance to go with it.

Rosa is open for lunch from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm every day except Sunday, Monday, and Thursday and for dinner from 5:30 pm to 9 pm every day except Sunday.

3. La Dolce Vita – Best Beach Club and Sunset Spot

Bailey in a swing at La Dolce Vita

  • Location: Right on the beach in Samara
  • Average Price: from $16 USD for main dishes
  • Come here for: Italian/Mediterranean

Strategically located only a few meters from the center of Sámara Beach,  La Dolce Vita , owned by Italians, offers a beachside restaurant with magnificent views and an electric atmosphere. The beach club is my favorite in Sámara, and I love coming with friends for a lively afternoon or romantic night.

The restaurant has tasty meals with cozy indoor lounge options as well as outdoor seating that’s complete with large umbrellas, pillows, and a blanket on the beach.

My fiancé and I decided to try dinner at this restaurant on my last visit. We had a small pizza with olives and a quinoa cake for the starter. Then, I tried the day’s special, seared blackened tuna with mixed veggies and a cocktail. Afterward, we had a fantastic limoncello!

The food was fresh, with plenty of gluten-free menu options too. I liked the presentation, Instagram-worthy, by the way. It was a perfect meal for a perfect holiday mood with a gorgeous setting and beach view.

Cocktails and drinks at La Dolce Vita

During the day, La Dolce Vita is an excellent place for drinks, and I highly suggest waiting around till golden hour to enjoy happy hour and the sunset. There’s plenty of space to relax and hang out in the comfy bean bag beds on the beach with a magnificent ocean view.

The atmosphere is equally beautiful at night, with soft lighting in the tree branches and a warm romantic ambiance. It’s a wonderful spot for a romantic dinner in Sámara.

La Dolce Vita is a must-visit if you’re  staying in Sámara to get the best Italian/international cuisines – I loved it!

4. Falafel Cafe – Best vegetarian

A big plate at Falafel Cafe in Samara, Costa Rica

  • Location: Calle Central
  • Average Price: $4 to $9 USD
  • Come here for: Healthy fast food/vegetarian

Falafel Cafe  is the ideal place to try Middle Eastern foods – with arguably the best hummus, kebab, and falafel in Sámara. This trendy café is co-owned by an Israeli, Elias Nassif, and Italian, David Rubini, and is located in a beautiful courtyard close to the beach.

Falafel Cafe serves fast food, takeaway, and casual dining. The menu is simple, offering homemade pita tortillas and hummus wraps with an optional salad; falafel wraps that include five small balls of fried; mashed garbanzo beans with herbs; Shepherd-styled El Samareño kebab meat and tzatziki yogurt sauce, with olives, cucumber, and garlic on the side. Other items on the menu include sandwich combos, fruit cocktails, and coffee.

We went there for a quick lunch and had the falafel burger, the Sámara Sandwich, a chocolate banana muffin, and pineapple and ginger juice. The food was super fresh and served in reasonable portions.

Falafel Cafe is a lovely little spot with delightful, fresh food, a nice seating area, and friendly staff. It’s an ideal spot for lunch in Sámara worth stopping by.

Falafel Cafe is open from 11 am to 12 am every day.

5. Sabor de la Montaña – Best restaurant with a view

View from Sabor de la Montaña

  • Location: In the foothills, a 50-minute drive outside of Sámara
  • Average Price: $12 USD
  • Come here for: Food with a breathtaking view!

If you’re looking for a food adventure in the mountains, this is it. Located in the outskirts of Sámara and surrounded by highlands,  Sabor de la Montaña  is the place to wine and dine with the a view. They serve local dishes tastefully made and combined with European cuisines.

Enjoy the tasty rice and beans, steak, pork chops, chicken Casados, plantains, and some seafood. To me, though, nothing beats their fresh wood-fired pizza. The dough is freshly prepared, and they actually pre-cook the base before adding the toppings to ensure a crispy base. The large pizza is big enough for two people, and it comes with quality ingredients.

The pizza at Sabor de la Montaña, Samara

Sabor de la Montaña is a casual spot and has freshly prepared food. The view from the restaurant is so beautiful, and I loved the tranquility.

If you want to visit Sabor de la Montaña, it is around a  50-minute drive from Sámara  and is up in the mountains. It’s certainly a restaurant in Sámara for the more adventurous.

Sabor de la Montaña is open from 9 am to 8 pm Wednesday to Sunday and closed Monday and Tuesday.

6. MamaGui – Best Authentic Italian Food

Steak at MamaGui in Samara, Costa Rica

  • Location: near the Catholic Church
  • Average Price: $25 USD upwards for the main dishes
  • Come here for: Fine dining Italian and Mediterranean food
  • Takes reservations: Yes

MamaGui  is a small contemporary Italian restaurant in the heart of Sámara that serves Italian and Mediterranean dishes, tasty cocktails, and a range of European wines. Come here for sophisticated dining to enjoy the delicately prepared meals.

The owner/chef, Gigio Palazzo, does great dish combinations such as the marlin sashimi, tagliatelle pasta with red snapper, and more. You’ll also find delicious steak, pork chops, and grilled squid.

We started our visit off with a Hendricks Dry Martini and the exceptional Montepulciano D’Abruzzo, a perfect choice for our main dish – a deliciously made Cavatelli al ragù de salsiccia di agnello.

Gigio does great food combinations between flavor and quantity. You’ve got to try their pizza too, definitely the best I’ve tasted while on holiday.

The bar has a large drinks menu with pros crafting fabulous, tasty, and artful garnished cocktails that add to the entire fine dining experience.

The ambiance and stylish low-key decor creates a calm, romantic atmosphere to enjoy the artistically crafted varied menu. MamaGui offers the finest, charming and vibrant dining experience in Playa Sámara.

MamaGui is open from 5:45 pm to 10 pm every day.

7. Gusto Beach Sámara – Best daytime beach club with amazing pizza

Pizza and pasta at Gusto Beach Sámara

  • Location: On Sámara Beach
  • Average Price: $25 USD for main dishes
  • Come here for: Delcious food while at the beach

Right on the beach, this restaurant is an excellent spot with stunning views!  Gusto Beach Sámara  is one of my favorite restaurants on Sámara Beach. It has consistent quality food from breakfast to dinner.

During the day, you can laze around on their lounge chairs and order food and cocktails all day. So long as you get one meal, the high-quality beach chairs complete with an umbrella are yours to enjoy. That’s one of the reasons I visit so often!

The menu has a touch of Italian flavors combined with Costa Rican local dishes. The portions are pretty generous. They have the yummiest smoothies, focaccia Caprese, chocolate croissants, pizza, chips and guacamole, sea bass ceviche, and fresh seafood dishes.

Food and Bailey at Gusto Beach, Sámara

We had lunch – started with a lovely ginger lemonade and red sangria and then finished with pasta and pizza! Try the Aperol spritz, banana smoothie, and focaccia caprese. The mozzarella dissolves in your mouth like smooth, warm chocolate.

The entertainment brings the place to life with great music. It’s the best place to make new friends, by the way, and the ambiance is something else! Simply impeccable.

Overall, Gusto is one of the finest beach restaurants in Sámara! The staff is friendly and attentive, giving you a perfect beach dining experience.

Gusto Beach Sámara is open from 8 am to 11 pm every day.

8. L’Authentique – Best tapas and wine bar

L'Authentique starter in Samara, Costa Rica

  • Location: in front of Hotel Floe De Coco, Playa Sámara (one of the best hotels in Samara )
  • Average Price: $14 to $18 USD for main dishes
  • Come here for: French cuisines, tapas, and wine.

L’ Authentique  is home away from home. The ambiance, food, and service team welcome you as if you were long-lost family or friends returning after a long trip. Julien and Eva are the charming, ever jovial couple. They are attentive, efficient, and super friendly.

This French-owned tapas restaurant and wine bar is famous in Sámara for the authentic imported cheeses, paired perfectly with charcuterie with a selection of tasty European/ South American wines. The food portions are small for the price, but the quality is unmatched.

We tried the day’s special – Assiette (assorted cured meats), with a variety of cheese and chilled Argentinian wine. Unforgettable! We also tried their French bread (baguettes) and camembert cheese, which were exceptionally delicious and genuinely French.

You can try the tapas platter, which is sooo huge! I bet it’s delicious too. We saw this from a family of six seated across our table and almost changed our order. I bet they enjoyed themselves big time.

The restaurant has this cute vintage van for couples where you can have a nicely done dinner table with an assortment of starters and chilled wine – gaze into each other’s eyes as you watch the sun go down. It’s such a beautiful romantic setting. Everything about L’Authentique is breathtaking!

L’Authentique is open from 5 pm to 11 pm every day, and you can  view their menu here .

9. Marisqueria Colochos – Best affordable seafood

Whole grilled fish at Marisqueria Colochos

  • Location: near Rancho de la Playa Sámara
  • Average Price: $12 to $20 USD
  • Come here for: Affordable food.

Marisqueria Colochos  is located away from the main street, a little bit after Casa Esmeralda. The place is rustic but well maintained – don’t be put off by the lackluster, the food is out of this world!

The local “Soda” has a few dining tables and a surfboard at the entrance. The place looks and feels more homely than the regular beachfront restaurants and is much cheaper than most eateries in Sámara!

I loved the fresh fish ceviche, served with crackers. The seafood dishes/platters/seafood soup is great too – try their lobster and grilled squid, very fresh and yummy. They also have chicken Casado served with a great choice of chilled wine.

Make your reservations on time because everything is done by the owners, from prepping the dishes to cooking and serving. It may take quite a chunk of your time, so don’t be in a hurry when you check in to eat, but it’s all worth the wait. Of course, the typical Casado meals come fast and cheap.

The friendly prices attract more visitors every day. Overall, the food, drinks, and service are excellent and friendly, all under $20 USD.

At Marisqueria Colochos, lunch is served from 11 am to 3 pm, then dinner from 5:30 pm to 9 pm except on Friday when they stay open late until 12 am.

10. Sweeties By Celia – Best dessert

Sweeties By Celia Cake in Samara, Costa Rica

  • Location: Playa, Sámara
  • Price range: Around $4 USD for a slice of cake
  • Come here for: the best desserts and pastries

Sweeties By Celia  is a charming spot in Sámara next to Pali in an outdoor food court. The evening atmosphere is magical with a lovely ambiance and is comfortable too. It offers a simple menu featuring pastries and both vegan and non-vegan dishes.

Bursting with joy along with her coworker, Celia, the owner, will certainly brighten your day with her infectious and charming personality. She speaks seven languages and makes all her visitors feel welcomed and valued. She’s a ball of energy and loves making people happy through her food and pastries.

Don’t be fooled by the name. This restaurant serves wholesome meals alongside lovely pastries, ice cream, and fruity smoothies.

Enjoy some delicious treats such as chocolate truffle cake, carrot nut cake, lemon cream cake, burritos, shawarmas/ kebab. Dinner includes flavorful chicken pineapple curry, burrito, and pumpkin spinach.

The food fusion is unmatched. Try the chicken plate or the burrito – both have the best-layered flavors. The service staff is equally joyful and provides exceptional customer service.

Overall, Sweeties offers incredible comfort treats, simple tasty with excellent service from Cecelia and her team – charming you always with their beautiful smiles and pleasant personality.

Sweeties By Celia is open from 11:30 am to 9:30 pm every day, and  you can view their menu here .

Must-do Activities While You’re in Samara

A turlte while snorkeling at Isla Chora

Werner Sauter Biological Reserve – Werner Sauter Biological Reserve is a small private reserve located not far from Sámara. It’s the best place to visit near Sámara if you want to see a huge range of wildlife including monkeys, birds , and reptiles. Tours to Werner Sauter cost around $50 USD per person and are guided.  This specific tour  includes pick-up from town as well as a 2.5 hour guided hike through the reserve.

Go snorkeling at Isla Chora – Isla Chora is a small island that is part of the reef that protects Sámara from heavy ocean swells. It’s a beautiful place to visit for the secluded beaches, but the highlight is without a doubt the snorkeling.  Kayaking tours from Sámara are top-rated and involve a short 30-minute paddle out to Isla Chora before relaxing on the beach and snorkeling the reef.  The tour we did  was excellent and our guide, Luis, was such a fun and knowledgeable person.

Turtle nesting tour – Turtles are one of the highlights of Costa Rican wildlife. Thousands of turtles visit the Pacific coast every month to lay eggs on the pristine beaches , and visitors can see both adults laying eggs and babies hatching.  This specific tour  visits one of three beaches depending on the time of year to see turtles.

Macaw Recovery Network – The Macaw Recovery Network is a center of volunteers and wildlife experts whose mission is to recover endangered Neotropical parrot populations. Although you can find many macaws in their care, they are focused on the Great Green Macaw – a critically endangered species. You can   do this guided tour with an expert and see the macaws in their natural habitat.

Where to Stay in Sámara, Costa Rica

Hotel Entre Dos Aguas

Sámara is one of those towns with a huge variety of places to stay. From budget backpacker hostels to luxury hotels, there are places to stay in all budget ranges.

Villas Kalimba – $$$

For luxury travelers or those in families, I love  Villas Kalimba . This place is spectacular and offers a fitness center, swimming pool, and restaurant. On top of that, it’s located right on the beach, and the villas are surrounded by tropical gardens.

Their two-bedroom villas come with a full kitchen and everything you need for a great holiday. Rates begin at $703 USD for a one-night stay. You can check availability and book online here on Booking.com .

Hotel Entre Dos Aguas – $$

If you consider yourself a mid-range traveler, then I have a great choice for you that caters to couples. Hotel Entre Dos Aguas is a rustic hotel with simple amenities on a beautiful property. Perfect for those who want a true Costa Rican stay.

All of the rooms have private showers, and some of the rooms have a terrace. You can check availability and book online here on Booking.com .

Las Mariposas – $

If you’re on a budget, there are lots of options, but not many of them are good.  Las Mariposas  is my top choice, with its location only 100 meters from the beach. The hostel has a great atmosphere for meeting other travelers and is suited to the social backpacker.

Rates begin at $12 USD/night for a bed in a shared dorm. You can  book this place on Hostelworld  or  Booking.com .

Getting Around Costa Rica

Bailey with our rental car near Rio Celeste Costa Rica

How you choose to get around Costa Rica is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your holiday here! How you do it depends on your budget, travel style, and comfort level.

Renting a Car

Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past.

One of the things you need to watch for when renting a car in Costa Rica is the mandatory insurance that the government requires you to have. There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book.

Thankfully, on Discover Cars it’s easy to tell apart the companies that include the mandatory insurance and those that don’t. The trick is you can’t pick any car on their website. In the picture below, you can see this rental car, with pick up in Jaco, includes the TPL. That means the mandatory insurance is included in the price. Any cover you get above that is extra.

Of course, I still suggest getting the full coverage offered by Discover Cars, which covers you even more.

You can  browse cars on Discover Cars here .

TPL Cover Costa Rica

Book Shuttles

If renting a car isn’t in your budget, you don’t feel comfortable driving in Costa Rica , or you just don’t like driving, shuttles are the next best option. There are hundreds of shuttle routes available all over the country, and they are very affordable.

Shuttles in Costa Rica are specifically for tourists and often include pick up and drop off at your selected hotels and airports. The drivers also speak some English, and the vehicles have air conditioning. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat when you book a shuttle (which isn’t the case with the public bus system.)

To get the best price, use the website  Bookaway . They compare all the offers and prices of shuttle companies in Costa Rica so you get the best price! Honestly, we have saved so much money using Bookaway!

You can search for shuttles online on Bookaway here.

Lastly, you can use the public bus system. On short journeys, such as from San Jose to La Fortuna or Uvita to Manuel Antonio, this system is great. However, the longer the journey the more hassle and time spent on a bus. It’s undoubtedly best to save the public bus in Costa Rica for short and straightforward trips!

The public buses are definitely the cheapest way to get around Costa Rica, but they are not always very reliable and schedules often change without notice and delays are to be expected. The buses can also be very crowded and hot – so just be prepared!

It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English.

We tried La dolce vita- while the food was good the prices were exorbitant- for two main dishes (no specials), two cocktails, one app, and two natural juices- it cost us $188.00 that did not include tip- each drink although not listed was $20.00 a piece and the average meal was 32 a piece. As a matter of fact there was another couple who ordered two shots of Hendricks and they told the proprietor that they were mad… lol they said the shots were more than the cost of the bottle. All in all we would not recommend this restaurant- we have had some great meals here thus far and have paid between $40 and $80 for four meals, with an app and a drink.

Pizza Paraiso

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Small pizzeria with excellent pizza. Thin, crispy crust and fresh toppings. Seafood pizza was outstanding with clams, mussels, shrimp, calamari. Also had some really good smoothies.

This place is AMAZING, best pizza in Sámara. Owners are a lovely couple from Argentina and Costa Rica. And If you ever been to Argentina you probably know the pizza there is the best. Our favorite is napolitana (tomatoes and cheese) and ham and cheese.... They are conveniently located in the main street or you can ordered delivery also ! More

school visits pizza express

This place was opposite our hotel. Hidden away in the back of several other places. The food was very good and pleasant and fast service. Take out possible if desired.

We had the pizzas delivered to our hotel and it was a quick delivery. Now, for my taste, these were not tasty: firstly they were American type with thick dough, and the cheese they used had high level of fat. I personally like Italian type... with thin dough but if you are fine with thick pizzas and bit of extra grease, then you might be okay. Also, as we had a delivery, the selection of pizzas (I would assume) was smaller than one gets on the spot. Good points: they come in different sizes (the large one is really large!) and they are not expensive. More

Good pizza, friendly staff. And one of the few restaurants in town that will take a credit card. I would definitely recommend.

Let's be honest....being from New York its hard to find good pizza but Pizza Paraiso delivers....and they deliver

I was first impressed with how many different types of pizza are actually available here at Paraiso! With too many to count, I asked a friend who lives in Samara, and she swore by the "Mexican" pizza. She was right because after we knocked out... one large Mexican pie, we immediately ordered another!!!! For those customers who do not speak Spanish, no worries-they speak English, and also deliver!!!! The owner is from Argentina, and aside from great pizza-they make AMAZING empanadas!!!!!!! Great place to visit after a day at the beach, or after a night of partying. Great food, nice atmosphere, and truly Pura Vida! More

Hands down, best pizza I’ve ever had! I’ve travelled a fair amount and I’ve never had pizza this good. I don’t know how to emphasize this enough. 🙌

Most people probably do takeaway but we didn't see the point of walking back to our place with pizza. Pizza was typical American style, and good. They had some tables in a sort of underground arcade. Clean and functional.

I had a decent and tasty American-style pizza (thick crust & cheesy), although its name was “Italiana.” The lady baking the pizza was adorable singing along with reggaeton-music.

Great hidden spot for families. Amazing pizza. The kids enjoyed the cheese pizza/pepperoni pizza. We recommend the Mexican and vegetarian pizza.

I have eaten here in the past, and return on each visit to Samara. Our group of 10 ate here two nights - our first night in, and on the last night of the vacation we picked up 4 pizzas. All were excellent. We will... be back. More

Very delicious. Just what our family needed after a beach day! Thankful for the delivery! The margarita was very tasty. No pictures because we ate it too fast.

Fantastic pizza and very consistent, Each time you visit it is the same as the last visit, great food. I love the Che, it's a meat lovers. My wife loves the Magarita, it's a cheese pizza. We order 1/2 and 1/2 with no problem. Staff... are nice, service is quick. It cheap but worth it. Only issue is the dining area feels like a food court. No style or class and uncomfortable but we come for the pizza not the ambiance. More

Had their pizza a couple times, and we were not disappointed. Bacon could have been cooked a little longer. We'll order well-done next time.

Kingswinford school holds 'superhero day' with special, fun filled visit from health workers

Children at a Kingswinford special school had a day of fun with a visit from emergency service heroes, and even got to sit in their vehicles.

school visits pizza express

On Thursday, students at The Brier School celebrated their own 'Superhero Day' with a special visit from West Midlands Air Ambulance, British Red Cross and St John Ambulance.

Throughout the day, the pupils learnt important lifesaving skills and how each service can help them when in an emergency.

Their 'favourite part' was being able to board some of the emergency vehicles as it was a 'real-life experience' for them, and a 'great opportunity' for the children to learn how to keep themselves safe.

Bethan Landon, associate head teacher at The Brier School, said: "All of the pupils at The Brier School have had a fantastic opportunity today to gain first hand experience alongside the people who help us within our local community. The highlight of the day was watching the pupils learn and practice their CPR skills and board a real Helicopter Pod. As a school we are very grateful to all of the 'superheroes' in our community who support us, our pupils and our families."
