40+ Kid Friendly Museums in Los Angeles For 2023
Here is the most comprehensive list you will ever find of Kid Friendly Museums in Los Angeles. Most of the museums on this list are either within Los Angeles or right on the outskirts. Some of them are free. Some of them cost a few bucks. Some even offer virtual field trips . Either way, typically museum admittance is about the same price as going out to see a movie.
Now when I say these are “great museums to explore with kids”, only you can measure how much interest your children will have in visiting a specific museum. For example, taking a 5-year-old child to Kidspace Museum is much different then taking a 16-year-old to learn about World World II at the Los Angles Museum of the Holocaust.
Please make sure the museum is age appropriate for your children prior to taking them to visit.
All of the museums on this list also offer field trips for students, homeschoolers and scout groups. Please contact each individual museum for further details.

Phone : 213-763-3466
From dinosaur fossils to live critters, The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles (NHM) has plenty to capture the interest of young minds. The NHM is the largest natural history museum on the West Coast. The most popular exhibit at the NHM is Dinosaur Hall, a newly-opened section filled with more than 300 dinosaur fossils like well-preserved bones and full-scale models of the T. rex and triceratops. Other prehistoric exhibitions focus on mammals and sea creatures that roamed the planet more than 60 million years ago. Are your students more interested in live animals? Visit the museum’s butterfly pavilion and Nature Lab with live insects, arachnids, rodents, snakes, and frogs.
The NHM has educational programs for youth, adults, and families. Schools visiting for field trips can explore self-guided options at no cost. Guided programs can be added to your field trip but may cost a fee depending on your group size and program of choice. School groups will need at least one chaperone per five students (any additional chaperones beyond the 1:5 ratio will have to pay for admission.) Submit your field trip request at least three weeks in advance to secure your school’s spot.
Charter bus travel tip : Parking for school buses and charter buses begins at $12. Have your driver drop your group off at NHM before parking at Exposition Park Lot 6. This lot is cash only most of the time, so be sure to give your driver enough money to cover parking fees.
California Science Center
Address : 700 Exposition Park Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90037 Phone : 323-724-3623
The California Science Center is actually right next door to the NHM! If your group is filled with science lovers and you have plenty of time to spare, consider visiting both of these museums. This science center is filled with more than 100 interactive exhibits about everything from aerospace science to exploration of the world’s many ecosystems. The museum’s most popular exhibit introduces visitors to the retired Space Shuttle Endeavour and its 19-year history as a NASA orbiter. Guests will also learn about manned space travel, missions to other planets, and how tools like the Hubble Space Telescope came to be.
Once you get your fill of outer space, explore seven different zones in the museum that represent different ecosystems. From the familiar urban jungle of the L.A. Zone to the deepest depths of the ocean in the Extreme Zone, you’ll learn plenty about the planet’s varied terrain and the creatures that live there.
The above exhibits are free for schools, but additional special exhibitions and IMAX film showings may require admission fees. Groups of 15 or more are required to make a reservation before visiting the California Science Center. A $25 booking fee is required for every group, and discounted admission will be charged per person if your reservation includes additional experiences.

Address : 5801 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036 Phone : 213-763-3499
Los Angeles has several unique museums with exhibits you won’t be able to experience anywhere else. The La Brea Tar Pits are the only active Ice Age excavation site in the world, and California students can see it all for free! These tar pits have produced prehistoric fossils of dire wolves, wooly mammoths, sabre-tooth cats, and even humans that date back as far as 50,000 years ago. More than 3.5 million fossils have been excavated from the pits, and teams of archaeologists are still working today to uncover more wonders hidden beneath the tar. Guests can watch scientists excavate active pits, explore interactive exhibits inside the museum, and marvel at full-scale models of towering mammoths and ground sloths.
Self-guided visits at La Brea are free for California schools, and guided programs can be added on for no additional cost. Student groups will need at least one chaperone for every five students (additional chaperones will be required to pay $12 for admission.) Your school will need to make a reservation for your self-guided visit at least three weeks in advance. Keep in mind that some guided add-ons are available during select times throughout the year and are limited to one program per visit.
Charter bus travel tip : There’s always construction going on somewhere in LA, and the area surrounding La Brea is no different. A loading zone and bus parking area is usually available on Curson Avenue, but this road is periodically closed for long-term construction. Groups can be dropped off at the main entrance on Wilshire Boulevard or at the north entrance off of 6th Street. Bus parking is also available along 6th Street right outside of the museum.

What to know about the scandal over Shohei Ohtani's interpreter

Baseball star Shohei Ohtani (right) and his interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara (left), are seen in the dugout in the 2024 MLB Seoul Series game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. The Dodgers have fired Mizuhara after Ohtani's representatives claimed he was the victim of "a massive theft."
In an ordinary time, MLB superstar Shohei Ohtani's debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers would dominate sports headlines, as he brings a jaw-dropping array of talent onto the field. The Dodgers are even opening their 2024 season on a splashy trip to South Korea.
But Ohtani's performance on the field is competing for attention with another extraordinary story about him, one that centers on illegal gambling — and allegations that Ohtani's friend and longtime interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, drained millions of dollars from the player's bank accounts to cover bad bets.
Shohei Ohtani agrees to a record $700 million, 10-year contract with the Dodgers
The Dodgers have fired Mizuhara, a team representative told NPR on Thursday. The team refused to comment further, saying, "The Dodgers are aware of media reports and are gathering information."
Neither Mizuhara nor anyone else involved in the story has been charged with a crime. Here's a quick guide to what's going on:
How did the gambling allegations emerge?
It started with reports from the Los Angeles Times and ESPN that a federal investigation was targeting a bookmaking operation allegedly run by Mathew Bowyer, who lives in Orange County, Calif. When contacted by NPR, the local U.S. attorney's office declined to comment on those reports.
The Los Angeles Times says it learned "Ohtani's name had surfaced" in the inquiry, leading the Times to ask Ohtani's representatives about his potential involvement. ESPN investigative reporter Tisha Thompson tells NPR that she was also working to track down more details, eventually leading to an interview with Mizuhara, earlier this week, and to records of wire transfers in large amounts.
"How [Mizuhara] came to lose his job basically started with reporters — myself — asking questions about those wire transfers," she said .
Super Bowl 2024
Super bowl betting soars, but it's still not legal in chiefs and 49ers home states.
"The wire transfer payments that were sent from Ohtani's account were sent to an associate of Bowyer's," Thompson said, citing multiple sources and bank data reviewed by ESPN.
But, she adds, her sources and Mizuhara himself "said that Ohtani does not gamble and that the funds were being used to cover Mizuhara's gambling losses."
Bowyer's attorney, Diane Bass, did not respond to an NPR request for comment before this story published. In a statement to ESPN and the Times , she said Bowyer had never met or spoke with Ohtani.
Interest in the case has cast a shadow over the start of the Dodgers' season, which began with a win over the San Diego Padres in Seoul. Ohtani, a two-time American League MVP who signed a blockbuster $700 million deal with the Dodgers, went 2-for-5 in the game at the Gocheok Sky Dome.
Did the interpreter change his story?
Thompson says she conducted a 90-minute interview with Mizuhara late Tuesday night, as the Dodgers prepared to open their season in Seoul.
"He basically said that it was his gambling debt, and that when he got too far in a hole — we have multiple sources telling us it's at least $4.5 million — he went to Ohtani, who told him he wasn't happy about the gambling debts, but he had decided to pay it off.
Consider This from NPR
Sports betting and the nfl are profitable partners, but controversies continue.
"He then gets into details about how he watched Ohtani log on to a computer and start to make wire transfer payments based on instructions that Mizuhara was giving him," she said.
But about 12 hours later, Thompson says, things took a turn. ESPN and the Times say they got a statement from Ohtani's attorneys at the Berk Brettler law firm stating, "In the course of responding to recent media inquiries, we discovered that Shohei has been the victim of a massive theft and we are turning the matter over to the authorities."
Thompson called Mizuhara, who disavowed his statements from the night before.
"When I said, 'Did you lie to me in that interview?' he said, 'Yes.' And then he tells me Ohtani knows nothing about his gaming debts and did not do the wire transfers," Thompson says.
Who is Ippei Mizuhara?
"Mizuhara was born in Japan and grew up near Anaheim, attending Diamond Bar High School and UC Riverside," according to an MLB account published in 2021.
Mizuhara, 39, and Ohtani, 29, met in Japan, when Ohtani starred for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters of the Nippon Professional Baseball league from 2013-2017. Mizuhara worked as a translator for the team.
Why MLB's new uniforms are getting mixed reviews
When Ohtani made his heralded leap to the MLB in the U.S., he asked Mizuhara to come along as his interpreter. He has been a regular sight alongside the dual-threat slugger and pitcher ever since, even catching behind Ohtani in the home run derby at the 2021 All-Star Game.
Mizuhara told Thompson that he began placing bets with Bowyer after meeting him in 2021. He said he wagered on international soccer and other sports, knowing that MLB forbids players and employees like him from betting on baseball.
"I never bet on baseball," Mizuhara said, in Thompson's story for ESPN. "That's 100 percent. I knew that rule. ... We have a meeting about that in spring training."
When the interpreter changed his account of what happened, Thompson reported, he also told her he's willing to accept the consequences for his actions.
What kind of laws and rules are involved?
Multiple gambling restrictions are involved, from MLB rules to state and federal laws.
The type of gambling that's alleged in Mizuhara's case is illegal in California, which does not allow sports betting of any kind. Ohtani has been based in the state since 2018, when he started his MLB career with the Los Angeles Angels.
The Two-Way
Major league baseball denies pete rose's request for reinstatement.
Major League Baseball regulates gambling under its Rule 21 on misconduct . It outlines three tiers of offenses, with the maximum penalty being a lifetime ban like the one it famously imposed on former great Pete Rose.
The first two tiers are relatively straightforward. If a player, official or employee is found to have bet on a baseball game they're not involved in, they would be punished by a one-year ban. If they bet on a game in which they take part, they face a lifetime ban.
The third tier in the MLB rule covers players or employees who make bets with illegal bookmakers — a section that could come to bear in the current controversy. In these cases, the rule states, it's up to the commissioner to impose a penalty that's deemed "appropriate in light of the facts and circumstances of the conduct."
The rule defines an illegal bookmaker as anyone running a gaming operation in a jurisdiction where it's illegal to bet on sports.
The Oakland A's hire the first female primary play-by-play announcer in MLB history
Sports gambling isn't illegal under federal law, as a 2018 Supreme Court ruling cleared the way for such ventures. But federal agencies do pursue people who run illegal gambling rings. In one such case in Ohio last fall , criminal charges ranged from owning and operating an illegal gambling business to "tax evasion, conspiracy to defraud the United States, willful failure to collect and pay over employment taxes, money laundering and an obstruction-related offense."

Docent Brewing began its journey in 2017 and introduced its inaugural Field Trip Fest in 2019 to mark its second anniversary that March. The festival’s name stems from the team’s decision to christen their beer cans ‘field trips’ at the brewery as a playful nod to embracing adventure and exploration outdoors, fostering a connection with childlike wonder. This year, the tradition continues as cans retain the same name, offering fans a familiar experience to enjoy.
The single-day fest will debut at a new location this year, just a stone’s throw from its previous spot. Nestled on the opposite side of the creek from its former home at Reata Park , the larger outdoor space was a strategic move, Hendon shared, as the team wanted to keep the fun in the same vicinity, but just with more space.
Despite the festival’s significant expansion since its reinstatement post the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022, Hendon said that its core objective remains unchanged: to commemorate and celebrate Docent Brewing’s anniversary each year, coincidentally accompanied by a star-studded lineup of folk acts.
The music and craft beer festival will include two stages with performances by alt-country rocker Nikki Lane and singer-songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter , along with performances by Alabama folk outlaw Early James, Orange County rockers Robert Jon & The Wreck , Eric Roebuck, Leroy From The North and Alice Wallace .
“When we first created Field Trip Fest, the initial goal was to create a folk festival, but I personally didn’t think we had many in Southern California,” Hendon said. “I’m originally from West Virginia, and there’s some really great rootsy and folk festivals in Colorado and back east and the Appalachian Mountains, (so we’re) bringing that energy over here. It’s also important for us to bring local acts to the stage, and fans seem to appreciate that sense of community in music.”
Hendon is equally excited about the festival’s Volkswagen bus show produced by the South County Bus Society, where folks can browse through 80 classic Volkswagen buses as well as a handful of eclectic cars.
There will be more than 40 local breweries in attendance, offering those 21-and-older samples of a variety of brews from 1-4:30 p.m. Adding to the culinary list, Heritage BBQ , renowned as one of South Orange County’s premier eateries, will be on the grounds.
As Field Trip Fest commemorates another anniversary, it also honors the inauguration of Docent Brewing’s third brewery in Corona Del Mar, alongside its latest establishment in San Clemente. While expansion is on the horizon, Hendon remains steadfast in his desire for the festival to uphold the values of community, friendship and good music that have defined Field Trip Fest and continue to shape its legacy.
“When we first started, it was just us inviting our closest friends, whether it came to breweries or musicians we knew, and that’s how it’s kind of always stayed. It’s the core of who we are.”

Clemson basketball’s Sweet 16 breakthrough: What matchup with Arizona means for Tigers
PJ Hall sat back and tried to take in everything. With his eyes full of tears, he looked around and saw that what had been just a dream for the past couple of years had finally become a reality.
His fellow Clemson teammates jumped around in celebration after the team clinched its first Sweet 16 berth since 2018. One of the players, senior guard Andrew Latiff , peeled a “March Madness” sign from a wall in the locker room. “This is definitely going in my room,” he said.
Another player, forward RJ Godfrey , recalled the feeling of entering the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers had lost three of four games before traveling to Memphis for the first two rounds, and the team was a trendy pick to be a single-digit seed (six) to be upset by a double-digit seed in the first round (No. 11 New Mexico).
“I had people in my life saying, ‘I don’t believe in y’all,’” Godfrey said. “It’s all fuel, though. You can’t take it in a negative way. You have to take it in a constructive way and use it to push your team and push yourself.”
The tears a year ago for Hall were much different. Clemson, which compiled a 23-10 record, was left out of the tournament field, much to the surprise of the team, as it felt the devastating blow of missing out on March Madness.
But this season, Hall, a senior and first-team All-ACC selection, was one of the catalysts who brought the Tigers to this point. Overcome by his emotions, Hall represented a promise made between himself and coach Brad Brownell, who got Hall, a top 50 recruit nationally out of high school, to believe in his vision. A few floors up in FedEx Forum, Brownell was informed of a different kind of history after the team’s second-round win over Baylor .
“Brad Brownell becomes the first Clemson coach to lead the team to multiple Sweet 16 appearances,” the moderator at the postgame news conference said.
“Ooooohhhhh,” said guard Joseph Girard III , sitting a few feet from Brownell.
Back in the locker room, Hall sang Brownell’s praises.
“For four years, I had to hear people hating that man,” Hall said. “They don’t know how incredible he is behind closed doors. There are people that support him thick and thin, and we love them. We love everyone. But everybody needs to know that coach Brownell is arguably the best coach to come through Clemson.”
Brownell is in his 14th season at Clemson, and his legacy lives in what feels like a perpetual gray area. He’s the winningest and losingest coach in program history (241-177). In the past five years, Clemson has been a top-five team in the ACC in wins, but there have been several years when the team fell short of expectations and the NCAA Tournament.
This year’s team broke through as an underdog against New Mexico and No. 3 seed Baylor, but Brownell saw this run coming.
Next up: No. 2 seed Arizona on Thursday night in Los Angeles for a trip to the Elite Eight.
“I think we’ve done a lot of really good things that show people that we’re a good basketball program,” Brownell said. “We’re doing things the right way. But again, to take another step, we’ve got to bust through consistently this time of year. In this tournament, it gives you the opportunity to do that. Nobody wants it more than me or our players.”
Some late-season struggles, including losses to Notre Dame , Wake Forest and Boston College , weren’t as bad as they were perceived, according to Brownell. But that allowed for an opportunity to challenge his players entering the tournament. One player in particular who took it to heart was senior guard Chase Hunter , a four-star recruit from Atlanta who committed to Clemson with a vision of being in this position. He scored only 2 points in Clemson’s opening ACC tournament game, a 76-55 drubbing to Boston College. But he has responded with back-to-back 20-point games in the NCAA Tournament.
Hall wasn’t a big statistical part of the game against Baylor, but his impact on the program and Brownell’s tenure transcends one game. One of the biggest criticisms of Brownell’s tenure has been the inability to land South Carolina’s top recruits. Notable players to leave the state in recent years include Zion Williamson, Trey McGowens , Bryce McGowens and Ja Morant.
Hall committed to Clemson when the program was in a bit of a lull, but he will leave the program as a multi-time All-ACC performer and a program legend regardless of what happens. The focus now is on an Elite Eight trip, which would be the second for Clemson, but perhaps the bigger-picture question is can Hall become a trendsetter for highly touted players to stay in-state?
Hall’s career, ending with a March run, is validation that Clemson can develop and win at a high level.
“He’s one of the kids, a top 50, 60 (nationally ranked) recruit who stayed home to play for his home-state school,” Brownell said. “That hasn’t been popular in my time here. It’s been hard for South Carolina and Clemson to get kids to do that. So he’s one of my all-time favorites, always will be.”
Clemson joins blue bloods Duke and North Carolina along with NC State, which entered the tournament as one of the hottest teams in the country, as the four ACC programs to reach the Sweet 16 (the most of any conference this year). In what was perceived to be a down year in the conference, the cream rose to the top, which validated Brownell’s stance against the NET and tournament manipulation earlier this year.
Following the win over Baylor, Brownell said it perhaps wasn’t the best way to go about advocating for the ACC, but he feels it’s his duty now. Quietly, he has become one of the elder statesmen of the league, alongside Florida State ’s Leonard Hamilton and Miami’s Jim Larrañaga.
“I’ve been in the ACC for 14 years,” Brownell said. “I’ve been here a long time. I’m probably outspoken now because (Mike Krzyzewski) and Roy Williams and Rick Pitino and Jim Boeheim and Mike Brey (are gone) — I’ve coached against Hall of Famers. There’s a lot of new guys now. You’ve got to hold up the banner of your league a little bit.
“I know the quality of play. I’ve been doing this for a long time. I’ve been a head coach for 22 years. I know when I’m playing against good teams, well-coached teams. And so I’m not surprised in the least that our teams are doing so well.”
Brownell’s longevity is a reason Girard, who entered the transfer portal at the end of last season following Boeheim’s retirement at Syracuse, decided to commit to Clemson. This Clemson team is comprised mostly of players it originally recruited and built during a few seasons, and that culture has made it an attractive destination for transfers.
“These guys have been great,” Girard said. “Coach Brownell, I’ll tell the story — when he and (associate coach Billy Donlon) came to my house for an in-home visit, they were bragging about the locker room, talking about how great these guys are, how close they are. You hear that everywhere, but I didn’t understand what it meant until I got on my visit at Clemson.
“I saw it. These guys are a brotherhood. It’s something I wanted to be a part of and what makes it so special and exciting.”
Clemson has reached the Sweet 16 this year, but the next step above being happy in the moment is what Brownell pointed to after the Baylor game: consistently breaking through. Doing so should attract high-level talent and elevate the profile of the program.
As far as the criticism, Brownell’s not too concerned about it. He just hopes all parties involved are enjoying the ride.
“I don’t worry about it,” Brownell said. “More importantly, it’s about my administration and the folks that I work for and my players’ understanding that we’re doing the best we can to put them in position to be successful and showing folks that this is a winning program and there has been a pretty high level of consistency.
“We’re trying to raise the ceiling, certainly. I know we’ve raised the floor considerably since I got here. But I don’t get too distracted with all of that. I’ve got enough to worry about day to day, just coaching my team and planning for the future.”

New Boston Red Sox' Slugger Looking to Claim Major League History on Opening Day
If Boston Red Sox' slugger Tyler O'Neill is able to hit a home run on Opening Day on Thursday, he'll be the first player to homer in five straight Opening Day games. The Red Sox open up at the Seattle Mariners.

In this story:
When Boston Red Sox' slugger Tyler O'Neill takes the field on Thursday night for Opening Day, he'll do so trying to make some very unique Major League history.
O'Neill, who was acquired this offseason in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, has homered in four straight Opening Day contests. Multiple players have done that before, but no player has ever homered on five straight Opening Days.
Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
REMINDER ENTERING TOMORROW: Tyler O’Neill has homered in 4 straight Opening Day games, tied for the most consecutive seasons with at least 1 Opening Day HR, with: 1994-97 Todd Hundley 1977-80 Gary Carter 1955-58 Yogi Berra h/t (@EliasSports)
REMINDER ENTERING TOMORROW: Tyler O’Neill has homered in 4 straight Opening Day games, tied for the most consecutive seasons with at least 1 Opening Day HR, with: 1994-97 Todd Hundley 1977-80 Gary Carter 1955-58 Yogi Berra h/t @EliasSports — Sarah Langs (@SlangsOnSports) March 27, 2024
That would be quite the accomplishment for O'Neill, and it would be quite a Red Sox debut for him. The Sox take on the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park, and ironically enough, O'Neill came up as a Mariners prospect. He was eventually traded to St. Louis from Seattle for starting pitcher Marco Gonzales.
The 28-year-old Canadian is heading into his seventh MLB season. The Red Sox will be hoping that he is able to replicate his stellar 2021 season which saw him hit 34 homers and bring in 80 runs for the Cardinals. In addition to his power, he also provides speed (15 stolen bases in 2021) and good glove work. He won Gold Glove Awards in both 2020 and 2021.
He should hit in the middle of the Red Sox' order, perhaps sandwiched between Triston Casas and Masataka Yoshida.
The Red Sox and Mariners will play on Thursday night at 10:10 p.m. ET.

Texas school bus with over 40 pre-K students struck by cement truck, killing 2, authorities say

A cement truck veered into a school bus carrying more than 40 pre-K students returning from a field trip to a Texas zoo Friday, killing a boy on the bus and a man in another vehicle, authorities said.
Officials said the bus rolled over on the highway in the rural outskirts of Austin. The roof of the bus was crumpled, and another vehicle nearby was badly damaged. Personal items were strewn across the road.
In addition to the two people who died, 51 were injured, including the bus driver, schools officials said.
Four people in critical condition were airlifted from the crash site and six others with potentially serious injuries were transported by ambulance, said Kevin Parker, division chief Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services.
An ambulance bus transported about 10 other patients to a children’s hospital with minor injuries, Parker said. Passengers on the bus included 44 students and 11 adults, according to the Hays Consolidated Independent School District.
The child who died “was a precious young boy” who was a pre-K student at Tom Green Elementary School in Buda, southwest of Austin, according to Eric Wright, school district superintendent. The child’s name was not released.
“This is a horrible and tragic day for our school district,” Wright said.
The bus was struck at about 2 p.m. when the concrete truck traveling in the opposite direction veered into the bus’ lane, Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Deon Cockrell said.
The man who was killed was in a vehicle that ran into the back of the bus or part of the concrete truck, Cockrell said. There was one person in the truck and one man in the other vehicle. Cockrell didn’t know how fast the vehicles were going. He said the truck driver was cooperating with authorities.
Parents of the students on the bus were notified of the crash and all the children were reunited with their families by the evening, Wright said.
Cynthia Yescas said her 4-year-old nephew had been on the bus and that he was slightly injured but OK, the Austin American-Statesman reported .
“The kids are more scared than anything else,” she said.
The bus didn’t have seatbelts because it was a 2011 model, Tim Savoy, a Hays school district spokesperson, told the newspaper. New buses have been fitted with belts since 2017, he said.
