Harley Edward Streten is an electronic dance music/inditronica artist from Sydney, Australia, but is much better known by his stage name, Flume.

“It was a crazy journey,” says Flume - aka 25-year old Australian producer Harley Streten - of his 2012 self-titled debut’s international success. “I was just some quiet kid in high-school and all of a sudden I got dropped into the deep end. Physically and mentally. It was a huge shock to the system.”

“Shock” plays a significant role on Flume’s often-outrageous second album, Skin. Released in May 2016, the musician’s wildly eclectic follow-up is a meticulously crafted, vivid universe of big emotions woven into a densely cinematic whole. With good reason - its creation mirrors the complex rush of sensations that came with sudden success.

“It used to be just writing for myself but now there is an audience,” says Streten. A sizeable one. Beyond millions of listeners and his own sold-out shows, Flume’s live show has become a major draw at international festivals, including Coachella, Reading, Leeds, Pukkelpop, Bonnaroo, and drawing 40,000 to his slot at Rock en Seine in Paris. “I wanted to keep the next album at a certain high energy,” says Streten of the writing process behind Skin. “That definitely influenced the new stuff a lot.”

Recorded in hotel rooms, aeroplanes, trains, taxis, and tour vans, and in locations as far-flung as LAX airport, a shack on the west coast of Mexico, a log cabin in rural Tasmania, a bus rattling towards Vegas, as well as studios in LA, New York, and his hometown of Sydney, Skin is “a grand expedition in trying to capture the biggest, most epic, powerful moments,” says the producer. “It’s the hi-fi version of my sound. I needed to do something bold.”

After slowly beginning work on Skin as far back as late 2013, Streten’s breakthrough came in mid-2015 when he shifted to LA for three months of solid work. Then, stuck on what would become the clattering standout, ‘Numb and Getting Colder’, he crushed together three completely different songs. It was a lightbulb moment. “I thought, cool this sounds like it’s from the future’” says Streten. “I hadn’t heard anything quite like that. I thought, this is how the album’s going to sound. I want it to sound like the future.”

That inclination to push himself has been handsomely rewarded. Announcing announcing headline shows to celebrate the release of Skin in May, Flume sold out all 300,000 tickets of his world headline tour, including more than 80,000 headline tickets in Australia alone. His stretch through the US included closing the outdoor stage at Coachella 2016; drawing 70,000 to his Lollapalooza slot; multiple sold out nights at The Shrine in LA, the Bill Graham Civic in San Francisco, and iconic sell-outs at Red Rocks CO and Forest Hills NYC.

Lead track ‘Never Be Like You’, featuring Canadian singer Kai, was a Top 10 Radio Single in the US where it also went Platinum. The track has been certified four times platinum in Australia, and to date has clocked a staggering 257 million plays on Spotify. Third single, ‘Say It’, featuring Tove Lo, is close behind, having reached 146 million plays on Spotify, and gone three times Platinum in Australia. Europe has shown similar love for Flume and Skin. Post-release highlights include playing BBC Radio 1 Big Weekender and a BBC Live Session with Annie Mac; selling out Alexandra Palace in London; and ‘Never Be Like You’ going Gold in Italy.

His homeland has long held special a place for the Sydney native. In Australia Skin debuted at #1 on the ARIA charts and has been certified Gold; in July Flume headlined Streten’s spiritual home, the Splendour in the Grass festival, and at the artisan awards for the 2016 ARIAs, Streten was awarded Producer Of The Year, Engineer Of The Year (alongside Eric J Dubowsky) and the album’s artwork by friend and collaborator, Jonathan Zawada, won Best Cover Art.

Despite Skin featuring an incredible array of guest vocalists – including Beck, Tove Lo, Little Dragon’s Yukimi Nagano, MNDR, AlunaGeorge, Australian newcomer Kučka, Canadian MC Allan Kingdom, US rappers Vince Staples, Vice Mensa, and Raekwon of Wu-Tang fame, and Kai – Stretan’s meticulous sonic creation proves a hard-won and profoundly personal victory.

“The point of being an artist is to be yourself,” says Streten. “Not to please people but to make stuff that doesn’t exist. Following my instincts is what got me to this point. I want to make things that sound like nothing else out there.”

Live reviews

I think the concert was in fact not so good.

The sound itself in the Columbia Halle Berlin was terrible, way too much bass, so much that you could sometimes barely hear the rest. The loudness was ok. Not too loud. The lights and visual effects were awesome.

But now comes the very poor point: Flumes DJ skills are very modest. He played a lot of the songs from 'Skin' (which is cool) but there were almost no remixes/ new stuff/ or at least some additional drums over stuff. The crowd stopped dancing several times because there was no beat, just synth pads. That's ok once or twice, but it seemed to be his main way of transition. I personally go to a concert to get two hours full with dancing and "Aha!" moments due to for example new unheard beats over some classics or similar.

Then also he made the beat become slower a few times which made us think he'd finally drop a remix and then he just played the original drop in the original bpm. Like wtf. The crowd literally STOPPED dancing several times although the people itself were actually very hyped.

He barely did anything on the mixer. And the set was only about 60-80 minutes of time.

Besides that he let the crowd wait for about 90 minutes before making the crowd think he'd be coming soon several times which was taking away the excitement big time after two or three times.

2/5, I'd have expected WAY more of a producer as skilled as Flume is.

I have been to a lot of gigs and concerts in my life however The experience of seeing Flume was off the richter. Vince Staples was the lead in act and he was totally out there !

The theatre and drama of Flume building the beginning of his set was just stunning with a huge sheer curtain cascading down at the first big drop of his first song. The entire huge, mosh area and stadium was just heaving to The Top and Lose It, however when Like You came on everyone was up on their feet singing and dancing, their love for Flume was overwhelming.

His special guests of Kuscka and Vince again on Smoke and Retribution was just awesome.

The graphics, lighting and smoke machines with live shots of Harley out of focus just added to this edgy performance. Flume aka Harley is so humble and came out to thank his hometown crowd, in which they repricprocated in spades.

He came back on stage after a deafening audience willed him back on to recreate Like a Version he performed on Triple J. Three more songs and the crowd was satiated. Easily the best concert I've been to with out of towners abuzz about it the next day. Love love Flume. I will be at his next concert, that's a certainty.

Seeing Flume at the Observatory in Santa Ana which is a smaller venue compared to where he will be playing in Los Angeles in Club Nokia was amazing. After the opening act, he came on stage around 10:30 PM. He was on stage for approximately and hour to and hour and a half. It was a long wait for him, but it was well worth it. He did not disappoint me whatsoever. He played his most well known songs: Holdin On, You & Me (Flume Remix), Tennis Courts (Flume Remix), Hyperparadise, Insane, Sleepless, Stay Close and more! He even gave us a sneak peak to one of his new songs. It sounded amazing! That was a very exciting part of the concert. The visuals and lights made the concert even better. The visuals and lights were paired and in sync with the music. The lights would go crazy at the drops. Flume definitely knows how to get the crowd going. He is very into the concert and you can tell how much he cares to put out a good show. Overall, I enjoyed myself at his concert even though I was uncomfortable 80% of the time because of the people behind me, but obviously that has nothing to do with him. I was constantly being rammed into the wall as I was front row.

I am very displeased with this whole situation I was put through with flume. I had my tickets bought and printed out for me, and when I received them, there was no indication that this concert was 18 and over. No where on the ticket was there black writing that stated it was 18 and over. I am 17 turning 18 in a few months and you can imagine my misfortune when I see all my friends who were able to get in and I was stuck behind because I was unaware of the age situation. I later then had to return my tickets, and wait alone for 1 hour to get a ride to come and get me. Then I missed my opportunity to see one of my favorite artists because of a two month age gap. I can not believe the whole situation I was put through and I will never buy my tickets for the Shrine, because they were very rude and not understanding at all when I was trying to ask questions about what I should do with my ticket and this service. They said and I quote "You better wait on the street and hope some kid will buy them". They lacked proper communication skills for dealing with these situations and this venue has definitely lost my favor.

Harley Edward Streten is best known by his stage persona of Flume, the Australian DJ and producer is one of the most exciting new artists in the electro/dance scene with a number of iconic names all vying to work with this young newcomer.

Having achieved huge commerciality in his native homeland with his debut self-titled album topping the chart, he has built a fan base that spans the globe. His live show is a barrage of lights, smoke and high quality electro which keeps his audience dancing into the night. Playing a variety of material from his highly acclaimed debut including successful singles such as 'Holdin' On' and 'Sleepless'.

It is when he drops his unique remixes though that the crowd really begin to lose their minds in Flume's self contained dance world. He has worked with a variety of the indie scenes most recognisable artists such as Arcade Fire and Chet Faker so when he plays their tracks the audience cheers rapturously. His finale of Lorde's 'Tennis Court' and Disclosure's 'You and Me' is clear proof Flume is one of the most exciting names in new dance music right now.

I saw Flume last at the Roundhouse earlier this year. That was a far better experience, which is a shame as this had so much potential.

The soundsystem was no match for the venue. I could speak without shouting and be heard, with the higher range of the music echoing and the bass booming. Flume's sound should totally envelope you and this just didn't happen. Much of what he was doing on stage was totally lost on us.

Likewise, Flume did not treat us to any tracks off the upcoming EP, which was a missed opportunity.

That said, he has vastly improved in engaging with the crowd and he did have a few treats in store. The mixing was true to his vision of his gigs being more of a "theatrical" experience. Rather than being 100% all the time, he gave us highs and lows that us longtime fans recognise as his signature.

Venue was well organised.

Overall 5/10. Good but not spectacular, expected more.

Once flume was on, he was great, but he didn't start until 9.20 and myself and my friend were standing waiting for him from 7, thinking he'd start at 8/8.30, and as we had to get the last train back to where we live (which is outside of London where the concert was), we had to leave at 10.20 and so we missed the end of the show. I was especially surprised at the late start seeing as it was a work day and I expect lots of people had to go to work/school the next day. If it was a Saturday, I'd have understood more.

I feel like I somewhat didn't get the experience I was hoping for, and I know I wasn't the only one as people started booing at around 9 when he still wasn't out and the second support act had finished 15 minutes before hand.

Overall, flume was awesome, but the wait was ridiculous and annoying, and made us miss the end of the show.

An amazing audio and visual experience, the venue was good since it was not too small but not too big. Being a foreigner in Germany, the people were nice enough, some people gave us some weird looks. Besides that, a very welcoming crowd will follow Flume around. Just a disclamer though, if you are looking to see "more" out of flume, he wont be too fun in concert as he plays mostly just his own tracks without any type of mixing or change. Almost sounds like he is pressing play on his Spotify. But either way it was beautiful and I throughly enjoyed!

Good concert and sound, however the flashing lights (especially in the beginning) were not suitable for the size of the venue, it was impossible to watch the stage ceveral times (epilepsy warning).

Flume makes good music although he's not a great,entertainer (thank you in between each song, gets boring) He should make it into a proper show!

Would also be good to have some organic music on stage (drums, guitar, synth in addition to the singer). Looking forward to seeing Odesza!

Absolutely amazing show. I was super pumped to be going, and the concert not only met these expectations, but also exceeded them. From 10 minutes in until the following day, I carried a smile thanks to the time and effort Flume has put into making his concert as incredible as possible for his fans. The visuals, the soundsystem, even the fans were everything I want to experience at a concert. I will be fighting to go to any/all shows of Flume's from here on out!

Palaces began to take shape when Flume returned to his native Australia after struggling to write music in Los Angeles at the beginning of the pandemic. Settling in a coastal town in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Flume quickly found the inspiration he needed through reconnecting with the nature around him-the rolling hills, walking around barefoot, the green color the sky turns before a big storm, growing and eating his own vegetables, the smell of rain.

He and his neighbor and longtime collaborator, the visual artist Jonathan Zawada, became fascinated by the local wildlife, in particular the birds, collecting field recordings that ultimately worked their way into the album. As Flume continued to forge a strong connection to his surroundings, the album he wanted to make started to form, eventually adopting a title to properly highlight the luxury and magic of the natural world. Palaces is his most confident, mature and uncompromising work to date, a true testament to nurturing the relationships that make us whole and bring us peace.

The album features a host of vocalists and collaborators, its cast list spanning new and household names from around the world-breakout U.S. star Caroline Polachek, British polymath-icon Damon Albarn, Spain's Vergen Maria, France's Oklou and fellow Australian Kučka, who returns following her standout turn on Skin.

Flume (born Harley Streten) rose to prominence as a teenager with his scene-starting, self-titled debut in 2012, which topped the ARIA charts, garnered four spots in triple j's Hottest 100 and sold out a massive Australian 40,000 cap tour. In the two years that followed, Flume established himself as an international sensation thanks to his compelling live show (debuting at Coachella, Lollapalooza, Reading & Leeds and many others) and skillful remixes of high-profile acts. He released his second LP Skin in 2016, which reached the top 10 on the U.S. Billboard Charts, top 20 in the U.K. and all across Europe, topped the ARIA Chart on release and reinforced Flume's status as an inventive, boundary-pushing producer while continuing to expand his reach.

Flume Announces ‘Palaces’ World Tour Dates Ahead Of New Album

Flume just announced his 2022, ‘Palaces’ World Tour to accompany the release of his third album coming later this year.

Earlier this month, he dropped the first single from the album, “Say Nothing” with MAY-A.

The 13-track album will follow up the Grammy Award-winning producer’s album ‘Skin’ from 2016. In a short video that announced the upcoming tour, Flume announced a host of supporting acts that are set to join him, from Channel Tres, Chrome Sparks, EPROM, Jon Hopkins, Oklou, Magdalena Bay, Tinashe, Tkay Maidza, and more.

While details have only been announced for the first North American leg of the tour starting off on April 14th in Las Vegas, the video mentions decals on the bike representing Germany, France, Portugal, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, and the U.K. but we don’t have any confirmed dates on details on that front other than the video.

Flume will be taking the tour to both weekends of Coachella, Governors Ball, and Bonnaroo among the other stops he’s already announced from April through the beginning of September 2022.

While only one track has still been released, an official press release touts the album as Flume’s “most confident, mature and uncompromising work to date, a true testament to nurturing the relationships that make us whole and bring us peace.”

Tickets go on Pre-sale on February 15th, and the general sales will follow starting February 18th. Complete details of the tours and tickets can be found here .

Flume Announces 2022 North American Tour

Australian producer  Flume , real name  Harley Edward Streten , has announced the North American leg of his 2022 world tour. The Grammy-Award winner will perform across the U.S. and Canada in support of his forthcoming album,  Palaces , due out on May 20th via  Future Classic / Transgressive .

Flume will anchor the bulk of his North American dates around three major festival appearances: Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, CA (4/16, 4/23);  Governor’s Ball   in New York, NY (6/11); and  Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival   in Manchester, TN (6/18). Before his first weekend at Coachella, however, the DJ/producer will start off at the  Downtown Las Vegas Events Center  in Nevada on April 14th. After his second Coachella stint, Streten will work through the Midwest, including a two-night run at Chicago, IL’s Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom  (5/27, 5/28); a lone Canadian date at Toronto, ON’s  RBC Echo Beach  (5/31); and a stop at Detroit, MI’s  Masonic Temple Theatre .

Working the Eastern Seaboard following a show at  Stage AE  in Pittsburgh, PA (6/5), Flume will host performances at  The Anthem in Washington, D.C. (6/8); Skyline Stage at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia, PA (6/10); Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh, NC (6/12); and Orlando Amphitheater  in Orlando, FL (6/15). After his slot at Bonnaroo, Streten will close out the North American run of shows with a two-night stand at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre  in Morrison, CO (9/6, 9/7).
