Best Motorbikes for North Vietnam Motorbike Tours

There is a fact that not every bike is suitable for motorbike tours in Northern Loop Vietnam. There are 3 motorbikes that you should use to conquer the North, namely Honda XR150L, Honda CRF250L, and Suzuki CRF400 bikes.

Honda XR150L

Honda XR150L  is good for both on-road and off-road routes. The motorbike is favored for flexibility and cylinder capacity. Its design is absolutely convenient. The ability to accelerate is fairly good. Reasonable fuel consumption is another reason why you can rely on this motorbike. With each liter of petrol, you can go 55km. Especially when you ride for a long time with the speed maintaining from 70 – 80 km/h, 300 km will consume about 6 liters of fuel. So if the fuel tank is full, you can go about 400 km. Since all the  motorbike routes in Northern Loop Vietnam  are usually long, this is a huge advantage. The price of this motorbike is also reasonable. However, you should remember that the front brake works sometimes “too well” that it can be dangerous for those who lack riding experience.

Honda CRF250L

Honda CRF250L  came to Vietnam only in 2014 but it soon won the hearts of many motorcyclists. The motorbike is perfect for almost all the road conditions in Vietnam. Both wheels have a size of 120/80 and are equipped with studded tires suitable for sandy and muddy  roads in the Northwest of Vietnam . Honda CRF250L 2018 with the affordable price is still the first choice in the off-road motocross segment in Vietnam, because of its beautiful design, durable engine, meeting the needs of a biker. Impressive durability is what people love about the motorbike. With it, you can easily conquer rugged off-road paths, jungles, and even mountains.

Suzuki DR-Z400S

Suzuki DR-Z400S  is perfectly balanced for you to use in any motorbike tours in Northern Loop Vietnam. The fully adjusted rake system and the front brake can help you off-road trails much easier to conquer. The shock absorber is flexible therefore you can change between off-road or on-road absorber handily. I’ve never done any dirt biking before only road bikes. I was a bit hesitant because of all the off-road stuff that I saw on the YouTube and advertising clips. I’m 58 years old and only in reasonably good condition. I thought I’d take a chance and see whether this was a fun trip, because of all the other positive reviews. I’m so very glad that I did because the trip was superb. I found it very challenging because I’ve never done any off-road stuff and a lot of this offloading is single Trail and up-and-down very steep inclines which other people on the trip found really fun and no trouble at all, but I was challenged by. They were many times when I thought I had bitten off more than I could chew but I’m very glad that I did because I feel that I’ve experienced something I would never have experienced anywhere else. I can’t encourage other people enough to take a chance and spend the time to do a five day trip or more. Five days was enough for me. I was exhausted at the end and most of the other guys were too, but I can see that the long trips would be fun too, because I don’t want to stop now at the end of the five days .

14 day Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh

This group, Frontier Travel Vietnam, were amazing. I've never been on a motorcycle holiday before and had never ridden off-road either, so for a novice rider it was an amazing experience.

Firstly, the team.

Incredible bunch. There was a total of 6 people looking after a large group of 12 of us that ranged from tour leader to mechanics, backup and photographer. They were the most hospitable bunch I've ever come across on any holiday. They looked after everyone before we set out on bikes, during and after the tour and went way past above-and-beyond to do so. They made us feel very welcome, showed us the best spots to dine and visit and were extremely polite, helpful and hospitable. Couldn’t have asked for a better team.

Because our team was so large, we had the option to split the groups regularly and choose whether to ride on-road or off-road which suited me as I hadn't been on a motorbike 10 years or so prior to the trip. The riding was varied and times challenging. Varied beautiful scenery, various weather conditions (basically wet or dry mostly warm, cooler in the mountains), and all different types of terrain. Even, for me, some of the roads were still being constructed which meant lots of potholes, gravel and slipping and sliding. My personal fave was riding through some of the crowded city areas. Lots of weaving and fun! But, for the more experienced lot, beach rides, muddy fields, rocky forests, steep climbs – plenty to keep anyone challenged. There’s lots to describe but all amazing and worth getting involved with.

A different hotel or home-stay/hostel each night. Some luxury, some basic – all were brilliant. The people were all very friendly everywhere. Some nice surprises thrown in too!

You could go to Vietnam completely unprepared and just buy all the kit you’ll need there for a lot, lot cheaper than almost anywhere else. Most people went with boots, helmet and waterproofs and little else. Camelbacks are highly recommended, you won’t need to carry much if you have the support car which will transport all your luggage. The bikes: mainly Honda CRF 300’s. Some few thousand KM’s old, some brand new. Some hiccups along the way, tyres going flat, lights dying, mirrors smashing all the way up to bikes getting submerged into the sea! Everything got fixed asap and people were back on the road in no time.

FIVE STARS FOR THIS LOT

The team that looked after us went out of their way to look after us and deserve special praise:

Victor – tour leader. Excellent rider, friendly guy, led everyone to each checkpoint. He will get lost sometimes but firmly believes breaking away from Sat Nav creates a more enjoyable experience.

Windy (not real name!) – Photographer. Supporting Victor. Amazing ability to take photos while riding (!!). Also, handles drone cameras for excellent shots of riders and surrounding.

Dazza – Mechanic. Always on hand following the teams keeping close eye on everyone’s riding abilities. If you like your drink this guy will make your day… every day!

Dave – Rear support. Stayed at rear of pack and ensured nobody got left behind or lost. Dai, Annie and Aimee. Dai was the driver and additional mechanic of the support car and ensured everyone’s belongings were transported safely. Annie was like a mum for us – SUPER organised and helpful she would ensure everyone was checked into the hotels, the correct luggage was sent to the correct rooms, ensured lunches were amazing – same for dinners. Kept everything in check was just amazing. Same for Annie too who didn’t join the tour but made sure were well looked after before we set out. Like I mentioned before, I’ve never encountered such a dedicated team of tour operators who went above and beyond to ensure everything went smoothly and that their customers had a fantastic experience. I highly, highly recommend this group and would definitely use them again if I were to return. Thank you for everything!!!

As a first time traveler to SE Asia, it was a little bit overwhelming planning my trip and adventures- Where to start? What to do? How can I get off the tourist path? How can I have the most fun? How can I see the most beautiful nature? Who can I trust? How can I make it back in one piece? If you are reading this review and have these same questions, here is my experience with Thang and Frontier Travel. First off, the planning phase was very straightforward. Frontier held up every end of their promises and guarantees. Nothing was shady at all.They were easy to communicate with and accessible. One suggestion is to bring your own gear. They have all the gear you would need, but I think it would be a good idea to bring your own to ensure comfortability. I did not bring my own (in order to travel lightly) and everything was ok except for the boots. I had to ride in boots that were way too small. Not the best, but nothing could take away from the experience I had.

The trip was everything I had hoped for and more. As a businessman and owner of Frontier, Thang is legit. He wants you to have the adventure of a lifetime. On a personal level and as the guide for our 6 day motorbike tour of the North-Central mountains, Thang became a best friend for life. He is so patient and kind, yet efficient and problem-solving. Any needs that I had were met gracefully and with love. He took me to places I could have never dreamed of- remote villages that I would have never been able to see without his guidance, views that are truly indescribable, into people's homes for food and green tea...This trip was truly the best thing I have ever done in my life. The ride and the natural beauty itself would have been enough to give this declaration, but what put this trip over the top was Thang. I can't emphasize how patient and knowledgeable he is.

This trip 6 days in the north central mountains on a 250cc motorcycle) isn't for someone who is looking for a "chill-out", "relaxing" touristy getaway. It is a breathtaking adventure. I came into the trip with a beginners level of motorbike skill. I am athletic and in good shape and the ride challenged me but rewarded me with the experience of a lifetime and I came out of it as a much more advanced rider, thanks to Thang. I recommend this trip for anyone who seeks adventure, SPECTACULAR natural beauty and growth. This trip genuinely changed my life. Cheers.

From twisty tarmac roads to rocky hill climbs and winding singletrack, the riding terrain on our Vietnam motorbike tours is certainly varied! That said, there is little to no sand, infrequent ruts and our tours are scheduled during the dry season to avoid to worst of the muddy conditions. So while the terrain can be challenging in places, surface under-tyre is usually quite consistent hard dirt & gravel. This actually makes the riding quite suitable for novice dirt bike riders and we always have the option to avoid the more technical sections if needed.

The riding in Vietnam is just beautiful. Whether you’re an enduro pro or relatively new to the off-road scene, you’ll have an absolute blast riding in Vietnam!

Rolling hills, terraced rice paddies, flowing rivers & waterfalls – the scenery in Vietnam is simply breathtaking. One of the oldest cultures in Southeast Asia, Vietnam has been heavily influenced by both the Chinese culture and that of the French, as well as that of the neighbouring Khmer & Champa cultures. The Vietnamese language also reflects this mixture of diverse influences such as a mix of grammar and tonality from the Thais and Chinese.

Although many people may think of Vietnam as being a Buddhist country it is officially an atheist country. For those who are religious it is more accurate to say the majority of citizens are not simply buddhist but uphold a system of beliefs known as Tam Giao which is a kind of triple religion, a mixture of Buddhism, Christianity and Cao Dai.

Vietnam is home to one of the world’s earliest civilisations and amongst the first to develop an agrarian society. In more recent history, Vietnam has become synonymous with the Vietnam War. Colonised by the French in 1887 they remained in control until the Battle of Dien Bien Phu (we ride through here on our Laos-Vietnam motorbike tour) in 1954 where the French finally withdrew. This allowed the division of the communist North to be officially divided from southern Vietnam, formalised by the 1954 Geneva Conference. From that point on, the US supported south was ruled by Ngo Dinh Diem’s regime in Saigon, while the Ho Chi Minh’s communist government ruled the north from Hanoi.

The Vietnam War (also known as the Second Indochina War) raged from 1955 until 1975, during which the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, supported by the US military, was defeated, meaning that Vietnam was unified under communist rule. Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City in remembrance of the communist war time leader who died in 1969.

The communist rule was later relaxed as Vietnam struggled to cope with post-war economic hardship, made worse by the conflicts with China and the Khmer Rouge conflict in neighbouring Cambodia. This has since led to the economic growth of private businesses as well as improved international relations which continues to the present day.

If you’re a foodie you’re going to absolutely love the traditional dishes we’ll enjoy throughout of Vietnam motorbike tours. Many of the dishes here have a French influence, without losing the classic Asian flavour and fragrances. Think delicious noodle soups, sticky caramelized pork cooked on the BBQ on beds of sticky rice, incredible seafood, spicy herb-filled baguettes accompanied by zingy salads, crunchy pickles & peanutty dipping sauces.

No trip to Vietnam would be complete without trying one of the country’s most famous dishes, ‘Pho’. Traditionally eaten for breakfast, pho is a rice noodle soup, made with chicken (Pho Ga) or beef (Pho Bo), bone broth and fresh herbs. With most meals in Vietnam you can then add a sauce to jazz it up a bit, for example lime, chilli or hoisin.

These bikes are comfortable, easy to ride and have suspension, power and ground clearance that is perfectly suited to the riding in Vietnam. They are not hardcore enduro machines, but these are not hardcore enduro tours. Classic Honda reliability and off-road rubber – these are without doubt the ideal tool for the job in Vietnam.

All of our tour leaders have been trained as Wilderness First Response medics by  Wild Medix  in South Africa.

We also have a Wild Medix consulting doctor on call 24/7. He is always ready to assist in the case of an emergency. My friends and I took a 10 day 9 night trip with Vietnam Riders from Saigon to Hoi An. It was a fantastic way to experience the real Vietnam. Ace, Kun were exceptional, friendly, informative, had a great sense of humor and careful guys . The motorcycle ride was way more comfortable than we were expecting

My friends and I did a 7 day motorbike tour from Ho Chi Minh to Nha Trang and it has been the highlight of our Vietnam trip. Our tour guides Kun and Ace were not only super friendly and nice but very knowledgeable of Vietnam culture, lifestyle and food.

We arrived in Ha Giang without any plans (as opposed to booking from Hanoi as I believe most people do). Initial intention was to do an easyrider motorbike tour of the Ha Giang Loop since that appeared to be the best way to see the beautiful, mountainous countryside - according to most of the tour company sites we looked at. However, since we are both around 60 and love to hike (and my wife wasn't thrilled about riding on the back of a motorbike on winding mountain roads), we were excited when we found Zonitrip in a google search and reached out to book a private hiking tour for the two of us. While our tour followed the basic clockwise eastern HG loop, when Nghia learned that we wanted to do a lot of hiking, she very quickly and flexibly set up several days during the tour that we would do more than 10km/day of hiking into some of the remote Hmong and Tay villages; many of them WAY above the busy, noisy motorbike traffic on the main road below. Nghia speaks English very well and is very knowledgeable about many cultural and historical customs of the ethnic mountain peoples. We developed a great appreciation of how these villagers live, getting some great exercise while viewing the unbelievably beautiful landscapes. ZoniTrip was very helpful and organised everything on our behalf - All we had to do was turn up! We (2 pax) opted for the 2D1N guided hike. Although exhausting to reach the peak within 1 day, it would be unnecessary to have any longer. The porter spoke no English but we made do with Google translate, which in my opinion made the experience more wholesome. Special mention needs to be made to the dinner and breakfast that was cooked for us at the campsite - delicious! Off the mountain we stayed at Zoni Home. What a lovely family, so helpful and kind. This homestay has stunning views of the countryside and a real ‘homey’ feel. The owner is highly responsive and addressed all our questions and needs almost instantly. Highly recommend! The pickup and transport to Zonihome was smooth and Nghia and her husband welcomed us when we got there with a home cooked meal. The meal was the best food I have had in Vietnam. We managed to get to the top of Ta Xua on the first day and were lucky enough to have good weather for the sunset. Dinner was delicious with some hotpot which was so good in cold weather. We enjoyed the beautiful landscapes, mountains, rice fields and to see how ethnic groups live in Vietnam. Nghia was a very nice guide and speaks English very well. She gave us a lot of detailed information about the local life and was also very interested on our lifes in Austria. The trekking routes were away from mass tourism in calm and peaceful locations. The homestays were very interesting (stilt houses, bamboo houses, houses made of mud). This trip is perfect for people, who would like to deeply enjoy the view of mountains, also rice fields and experience the cultural life of ethnic groups. We had our own nice car driver with a very comfortable car. Everything was well organized. We got a lot of Vietnamese food! Thank you Nghia for this great trip, we won't never forget. We had the local Black Hmong female guide who brought along her 9yo daughter. Truly impressed by the little girl who is so agile and can hike better than any of us! Seond hike was Ta Lien Son where Nghia came with us due to lack of English-speaking guides. The terrain was much more interesting and we managed to summit within the first day! Anyway, motorbikes, scooters are still always kings of the Vietnamese roads. The Northeast route is relatively easy riding and the people are very friendly. You will mostly stay with host families and discover their cultures. A good proposal depends on you providing us with clear information about what you would like to do, to see and dream of. For us, to have good motorbike tours in Vietnam, the destination is not the most important, the route to ride on is more important. Can you buy motorcycle riding insurance?

The biggest insurance companies in Vietnam are Bao Viet( National Insurrance Company) and Gras Savoye Willis ( French Insurance Broker ). They are quite big in Vietnam but they never cover you if you have no Vietnamese motorbike riding license.You’d better to get one in your country before coming to Vietnam.

We are suggested to choose CHI Insurance or Allianz. It’s said these companies didn’t require a local driving license and covered larger displacements. Alternatively, Lonely Planet also have an insurance policy for less than 100$US/person.

On our trips, you ride about five hours per day on average. It means you still get insured about 19 hours per day while not riding the bike with just a normal travel insurance policy.

How to have good motorcycle ride in Vietnam?

Vietnam could be the best destination in Asia for Motorcyclist, The bikers can have the memorable trips here because of beautiful mountain passes with colorful hill tribes and the eye-catched landscapes continually change. But the traffic and road condition is the most special in the world therefore Vietnam motorbike tour Experts would like to give you some suggestion below to make your trip to Vietnam become wonderful: * Take a guided motorbike tour. However, it is rain a lot here so the best time to ride in north Vietnam is from September to the next April. * Vietnam is a kingdom of horn, It is very necessary to use horn here. The reason is that most of the bikers here don’t use driving mirrors or never look at them. They only let you take over them or leave you safe when they hear your horn. So please don’t be quiet on Vietnam road.

Almost the Vietnamese people don’t use the motorbikes those are larger than 175cc until May 2007 when Vietnam joined WTO. It took sometime to have bigger bikes imported into Vietnam, but it’s likely that nobody rents out these bikes as import tax is 90% and VAT is 10% (a bike costs twice as much as in your country!). Motorbikes in Vietnam will not break the sound barrier but they will easily carry two people (locally, even more) down all of Vietnam’s roads. They are light, balanced, fun to ride and suitable to the Vietnam road. We also offer Honda SL 230cc or Baja XR 250cc and some other big motorbikes with 250cc.

How do we pay the tour?

Deposit is made via a secure internet link ( via Onepay.vn) or Western Union Cash Transfer. Unfortunately. PayPal applies very bad conditions to Vietnamese account holders so we are not Paypal’s fans. The final balance is paid before starting the tour in our office in Hanoi by credit card with the fixed bank charge of 3,5% for Visa and MasterCard holders (4% for American Express card holders). At current times, we may apply surcharge as banks may offer low or very low rates comparing to black/free market rates. You can also pay by cash and we prefer USD or Vietnamese Dong.

I‘m travelling alone, is it possible to join with another group?

Yes, it is. Please check it out at Tour List To Join . Most of our customers booked strictly private tours while some of them wanted to have more riders (new friends) tagged along to have more fun and save some dollars. Maximum of a group is limited to 6 or 8 people. As a note, an open group tour usually has riders with different riding experiences and if you care about strangers in the group, you’d better book a strictly private tour. Ideally, a trip between friends is the best because you have a good understanding about other people.

Do I need a Local Motorbike license?

Motorbike licensing is a dark area in Vietnam. Many of  the locals do not have a license, however new legislation has been passed and is slowly being enforced. Joining our motorbike tours in Vietnam without a local license should not be an issue for us, however it can be an issue for travel insurance companies. Some companies require local licenses, others require home licenses, and still others no license at all. Please check the fine print of your insurance to make sure of their policy regarding engine size limitations and riding documentation.

What to bring during the motorcycle tour?

These are some of the necessary things we need on tour but make sure all of then can fit in a small and soft bag that can tie easily on the back of the bike or fit our small saddle bags. Please look at the sample checklist:

–  Mosquito repellent

– A bum-bag (fanny pack) for small items, camera etc

– A pair of flip-flops (thongs) for evenings/around the village

– Sturdy footwear/riding boots (optional)

– Long-sleeved T-shirt/biking jersey and combat/ biking pants

– Helmet, gloves, goggles ( they are inclusive, but your ones fit you best)

– Bandana, scarf or dust mask to cover your mouth, especially during the dry season

– Plastic bags or bag liner for clothes, money etc during the rainy season
