Iberian Escape | IMTBike Southern Spain Andalusia Tour Review
Every international motorcycle tour is special, but none is as memorable as your first one. For my wife, Carrie, and me, our first international tour was in 2010 – a two-week tour of Spain and Portugal with IMTBike , a motorcycle tour and rental company based in Spain with office locations in Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Málaga, and Lisbon, Portugal.
Carrie and I have had the good fortune to go on many international motorcycle tours together. Riding two-up, mostly on a big BMW GS, we’ve explored a dozen countries in Europe, as well as Canada and Ecuador. We got engaged at the top of Stelvio Pass in the Alps and spent our honeymoon on a tour in Norway. But for that first tour, our guides were Scott Moreno, IMTBike’s founder and CEO, and “Super” Chano Lorenzo, IMTBike’s longest serving guide, who’s been with the company since 1998.

Like old friends, Scott and Chano shared their unabashed love and deep knowledge of Spain and Portugal with everyone in our group, treating each one of us as special and taking time to get to know us so they could tailor the tour experience to our particular needs or desires.
Wake-Up Call
Of all the tours Carrie and I have been on, our most embarrassing moment happened on Day 1 of that first tour in 2010 – before we had even gotten on the bike. While enjoying ourselves at the festive welcome dinner the night before, we imbibed a bit too much vino tinto. When we got back to the hotel, feeling the effects of jetlag and the wine, we decided to wake up early to pack and get ready for the tour. I set my alarm, and we went to bed.
With the curtains drawn to block out the city lights of Madrid, I was jolted awake by the phone. It was Chano. “ Buenos dias , Greg! It’s nine o’ clock, and everyone is on the bus, waiting to go. Are you ready?”
Mierda! I had gotten the a.m./p.m. mixed up on my phone’s alarm.
“I’m soooooo sorry! We overslept!”
“Don’t worry, that means you were relaxed! Scott will head over on the bus with the others and start the bike handover. I’m downstairs with everyone’s luggage in the van. I’ll wait for you.”
Hungover with throbbing headaches, our pulses racing, we threw everything into our luggage and suited up in our riding gear as fast as we could. Carrie and I are both fastidious Type A people, and we hate being late. We did the walk of shame out to the van, only to find Chano with a big smile on his face as he reassured us, “Is no problem!”
And it wasn’t. As embarrassed as we were, Chano and Scott just rolled with the situation. Our blunder was the source of playful ribbing throughout the tour, an inside joke we still share to this day. And we learned our lesson – in nearly 100 days we’ve spent on overseas motorcycle tours since that first morning, we have not been late once, and we’re often the first people on the bikes in the morning, ready to go.
A Very Good Year
Like all motorcycle tour companies, the pandemic was a gut punch to IMTBike. Covid restrictions meant the company couldn’t run tours for more than a year, but Moreno kept his team on the payroll, and they used the downtime to refresh, refine, and expand their tour offerings. IMTBike specializes in tours of the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal), but it also offers tours in France, Italy, the Alps, and Morocco, as well as MotoGP tours (Catalunya, Jerez, and Valencia) and tours in Turkey, Thailand, Japan, and New Zealand.
IMTBike resumed its tours in 2021, the same year it earned a coveted Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best award. In 2022, IMTBike celebrated its 25th anniversary, and Scott personally invited Carrie and me to join him and Chano on the Southern Spain Andalusia tour.

Amazing Andalusia via IMTBike
As much as we were looking forward to getting the band back together for a reunion tour, a family emergency precluded Scott from joining us. Chano served as head guide, and our consolation prize was Paolo Pezzoli, a young, energetic Italian who was new to the IMTBike team.
The Southern Spain Andalusia tour hits the sweet spot – not too short or too long, not too easy or too challenging, and just right in terms of daily mileage, choice of roads, scenery, sightseeing, and accommodations. The tour is nine days, with six riding days, one rest day, and travel days on each end. It starts and ends in Málaga, a city on Spain’s Mediterranean Costa Del Sol (Sun Coast), and includes stops in Granada, Córdoba, Seville (rest day), Arcos de la Frontera, and Ronda.
Carrie and I arrived a day early to shake off our jetlag and spend a day exploring Málaga, which was founded in 770 B.C. and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. IMTBike booked a modern, stylish hotel that’s a short walk to the heart of the city. We visited the 19th-century Atarazanas Market, the 14th-century Cathedral of Málaga, and the 11th-century Alcazaba, a Moorish palatial fortress perched on a hill overlooking the city and coast.
After our walking tour – which included a stop at a busy sidewalk cafe for tapas, sangria, and people-watching – we met the tour group in the hotel’s bar. Over beers and wine, we met Lonny and Linda, a couple from Idaho; Kobus and Magda, a couple from South Africa; Bernard, a solo rider from Canada; and Oliver, a solo rider from Dominican Republic. Each of us took turns telling the group a little about ourselves, and Chano gave us an overview of the tour and rules of the road in Spain.
To keep us connected, IMTBike set up a group on WhatsApp so we could send text messages, live locations, photos, and more via Wi-Fi. We also received links to the tour’s daily routes on Google Maps and to a Google Drive folder so we could upload and share our photos.
Following the briefing, we walked to dinner. Spain is known for its afternoon siestas and late-night dinners, and in the evenings, the streets of cities we visited were bustling with locals and tourists, young and old and everything in between. Our tour was in October, with mild days and cool nights – ideal for strolling on cobblestoned and tiled sidewalks that are hundreds of years old, their surfaces worn smooth by millions of footsteps. Our welcome dinner was at a restaurant handpicked by IMTBike, and Chano got us started by ordering Iberian ham, cheese, and wine for the table. Everyone was in good spirits as we broke bread and got to know each other.
Up, Up, and Away
Carrie and I woke up early, enjoyed a decadent breakfast at the hotel, brought our luggage down, and walked outside to find two R 1250 RTs, three R 1250 GSs, and an F 850 GS lined up on the sidewalk. IMTBike is an official partner of BMW Motorrad, and it owns the world’s largest fleet of BMW motorcycles (more than 200 at last count). Bikes available to rent range from the G 310 R to the K 1600 GT, and all are outfitted with a top case and side cases; a GPS unit is optional. Our group was followed by a support van that carried luggage and a spare bike.
On our first tour in 2010, Carrie and I described Spain as “California with castles.” The coastal areas of Southern Spain and Southern California have mild Mediterranean climates as well as rugged mountains that rise dramatically from the sea. Within minutes of leaving Málaga, we climbed up, up, up into the mountains on a tight, steep, endlessly curving road that kept us on our toes. After a midmorning coffee stop, we rode back down to the coast to have delicious paella right next to the beach. We ascended into the mountains again on a narrow lane carved into the rock known as the “Goat Road,” arriving in Granada in time to explore the city’s old quarter before meeting up for a gourmet dinner at one of the best restaurants in the city.
From Granada, we got full use of our tires and leaned deeply through the curves of a shaded canyon before popping out into the high plains, where we got a bird’s eye view of the village of La Peza from an overlook. We rode through endless olive groves and visited the Núñez de Prado organic olive oil factory in Baena, where the olives are crushed by enormous stone mills to extract the “flower” and first cold pressing of extra virgin olive oil.
After lunch in the Baena town square, we rode to Córdoba, home to more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other city. It was a hot afternoon, so we cooled off in the rooftop pool overlooking the Guadalquivir River and the city. We explored the narrow, cobblestoned streets and visited the stunning Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba. At an outdoor cafe, Carrie and I joined Lonny and Linda for sangria, and then we enjoyed a family-style dinner with the group at a local restaurant.
On our third day, we rode from Córdoba to Seville on a series of backroads that seemed tailor-made for motorcyclists. Spain is a motorcycle-mad country, and you can’t help but think that civil engineers said to themselves, “Let’s make these curves flow with a nice rhythm. We’ll give them a consistent radius, good banking, and smooth pavement. Riders will love it!”
After winding through farmland with rolling hills filled with oak and cork trees, herds of sheep, and black Iberian pigs (the source of highly prized jamón pata negra), we rode over the Sierra Morena mountains and back down into the Guadalquivir River valley and the magnificent city of Seville.
We arrived with a few hours to unwind, relax, and explore before dinner. We walked from the hotel to an old restaurant decorated with bullfighting memorabilia, and we enjoyed vino tinto and plates of jamón, queso, ensalada mixta, and other delicacies, all topped off with a variety of diet-busting sweets and little glasses of house-made liqueur.
Caves, Coffee, and Cava … IMTBike Style
After a rest day exploring the wonderful city of Seville and a mesmerizing flamenco show, we continued our meandering lap around Andalusia. We rode through rolling hills of olive trees and passed several of the region’s iconic Pueblos Blancos (White Towns), where all the houses and buildings have whitewashed walls and terra cotta tile roofs. We stopped for lunch in Setenil de las Bodegas, a town built along a small canyon with houses and shops built into the hollowed out limestone caves on both sides of the river.
Next up was the most impressive road of the trip, an Alps-like climb from the valley to 4,452-foot Palomas Pass. We descended an equally winding and scenic road and made our way to Arcos de la Frontera, an old town built high on a limestone promontory. De la Frontera means “on the frontier,” so named because Arcos was on the frontlines of Spain’s 13th-century battle with the Moors. Perched on the edge of the cliff overlooking the Guadalete River, our hotel was a Parador, one of roughly 100 hotels managed by Spain that are in buildings of historical, artistic, or cultural interest.
Leaving Arcos de la Frontera, we rode under the flying buttresses of the cathedral and descended steep, narrow cobblestone streets made damp by overnight rains. We continued our ride along La Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos (Route of the White Towns) where whitewashed villages on the mountainsides stand out like large polka dots on the green landscape. We rode into Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park and wound our way up to El Boyar Pass on our way to our morning coffee stop in a bustling town square.
Every day, we rode up and down on small mountain roads and through idyllic agricultural plains. Traffic was minimal, and the rugged, old-world scenery was enchanting. On our fifth riding day, we enjoyed more fast and fun roads in the afternoon as we made our way to Ronda, a city perched high on both sides of the Tajo gorge carved by the Guadelevin River. We stayed in a Parador on the edge of a cliff overlooking the “new” 300-year-old bridge over the gorge (the old bridge was built during the Roman Empire).
We started our last day of the tour with a beautiful sunrise over Ronda. We rode east into the rugged granite mountains of Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park, winding our way through canyons and over passes toward El Burgo.
It was Saturday, and we stopped for coffee at a popular meet-up spot for motorcyclists, its tables abuzz with riders and its parking lot full of bikes. The final highlight of the tour was a ride up to El Torcal de Antequera, a mountain ridge covered in unusual karst rock formations that reminded us of Joshua Tree National Park seen through the eyes of surrealist painter Salvador Dalí.
We descended more narrow, twisty roads back to Málaga, where we turned in our BMWs at IMTBike’s warehouse and toasted a celebratory glass of cava. After drinks and laughs on the hotel’s patio, we enjoyed a festive farewell dinner at another wonderful restaurant.
The week went by fast, a sure sign of how much fun we had. Chano and Paolo were a constant source of charm and good humor, and they did a lot of work behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly. Our small group bonded quickly, and even months after the tour, we still send messages via WhatsApp to stay in touch.
If you love good roads, good food and wine, and nice accommodations, as well as history, architecture, and rugged mountain scenery, this tour is for you. Just try not to oversleep.
The 2023 Southern Spain Andalusia tours run March 11-19, April 15-23, and Oct. 14-22. Visit the IMTBike website for more info.

It is worth pausing before the monuments that still remain from this period. The route designed by the guide will cover, curve after curve, the distance between the city center and the Sierra Nevada mountain range where the group will be able to enjoy a privileged view of the sunset.
After a full breakfast, we will get back on the bike. The group will head northward into the province of Jaen. We will ride through a gorgeous area before going up the mountain, endless olive groves on both sides of the road. We will end the day at Ubeda. The descent begins, which will take us from the mountains to sea level. At this stage we ride towards Cordoba, famous for its architectural treasures: The Mosque of Cordoba and the Patio de los Naranjos. Another major architectural attraction is the decorative style, which is made up of pots and plants, and decorates both the outside and the inside of the traditional houses. A fundamental part of this trip will be to admire both the source and the subsequent depression of the Guadalquivir River.
On our fourth day on two wheels we will set course to the North, for a few kilometers, just to veer south afterwards and ride into a different province. We’ll continue after our guide’s steps who will takes on a route that follows the Guadalquivir river, until we reach the Triana Bridge in Seville. The Andalusian capital awaits us with open arms, refreshments and serrano ham.
Seville will welcome us, and we’ll be able to take a breather and enjoy the many cultural and gastronomic possibilities it offers. We’ll be able to stroll through its old town and discover the many historical monuments that abound there. The Giralda, Plaza de España or the streets of the Jewish Quarter among others. The city is world-famous, for the quantity and quality of its bars and restaurants. We might be able to enjoy in some of them a live flamenco show. Seville is a welcoming and friendly place that will not fail to impress any traveler.
With a full tank of gas and well rested, we’ll leave Seville behind and ride towards the south, the sea awaits us. We have scheduled in this stage a stop to eat in Arcos de la Frontera, in the Province of Cádiz. Located at the top of a mountain, this town will offer us a chance to enjoy a panoramic view of the area. We will end the day in Tarifa, the southernmost point of the peninsula. From there we will be able to view the Strait of Gibraltar, where the waters of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic meet, where the two continents face each other. Africa, 14 kilometers away, will be before our eyes.
Good morning! We’ll start up the engines and start heading towards the northwest. The beginning of this stage will take us to a Nature Reserve, located in the middle of the mountain range, after which we will make a stop in Ronda. The last kilometers of this adventure will have us climb a highland stretch. Then we’ll descend to the place where this expedition started, Malaga. Thus closing the circle which took us through the land of art.
Time to say goodbye to the rest of the group after this great adventure. It is the time pack our suitcases, take our memories and say goodbye. See you next time!

How to Plan a Motorcycle Route in Southern Spain
It’s hard to find a better year-round motorcycling destination than Southern Spain in Europe. Andalusia is famous for its mild climate even in the winter months, and its stunning mountain twisties and coastal roads make for a fantastic motorcycle playground. But how to plan a motorcycle route in Southern Spain, and where do you begin?
Here are some handy ideas :
The Desert Challenge
Route: Granada – Baza via Gorafe Distance: 203 km Duration: 4 hours Scenic stops: Granada, Guadix, Gorafe
Southern Spain is a wild and diverse country, and depending on your preferences, you can opt for a wide variety of different landscapes and roads. One of the most fascinating destinations in Andalusia, however, is the Tabernas Desert (also known as the Gorafe Desert). Situated just a little east of Granada , a city best-known for its majestic Alhambra fortress worth a visit, the Tabernas Desert looks so surreal it’s hard to believe you’re still in Europe.
Tabernas Desert, Andalusia
Looking uncannily like the red rock badlands of Arizona or Utah, Tabernas boasts red, pink, and beige sandstone canyons and rocks, jaw-dropping rock formations, and dammed turquoise blue lakes contrasting sharply with the ochre hues of the dry land.
Backcountry roads of Southern Spain
The Tabernas Desert resembles the American Wild West landscape so much that Hollywood had moved some of its Western movie productions here, and you can still visit a ghost town in Tabernas built solely for the purposes of shooting spaghetti Westerns.
In addition, the Granada – Baza route has some interesting stops along the way. The little town of Guadix is well-known for its cave homes: thousands of years ago, locals started carving out dwellings out of rocks and canyon walls. A lot of these dwellings are still used today, and if you have the time, be sure to spend a night or two in an authentic cave home in Guadix. Gorafe , a small village located right in the heart of Tabernas, offers incredible views and quirky accommodation.
This route can be ridden in a day, but you can also easily divide it into two or three days if you stay in Guadix and Gorafe and explore locally. The roads here are narrow, twisty backcountry routes ideal for motorcycling, and you’ll always have the stunning backdrop of snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains in the distance. If you ride here in spring, the landscape comes alive with pink almond tree blossoms making it look like a Dalí painting.
Southern Spain motorcycle roads
The hemingway route.
Route: Alhama de Granada – San Pedro de Alcantara Distance: 253 km Duration: 5 hours Scenic stops: Montes de Malaga, El Chorro, Caminito del Rey, Sierra de Las Nieves, Ronda
Leaving the desert badlands behind, you’ll head westward and enter the Montes de Malaga Natural Park . This is an exceptionally beautiful area with lush green scenery and glimpses of the bay of Malaga from above. The roads here are beloved by local motorcyclists, and for good reason: these routes are small, quiet, and rural boasting so many twists and turns you’re guaranteed to get your fill of leaning into the curves. Once you hit the outskirts of Malaga and turn north, the backcountry roads will take you to El Chorro, an area of bright blue dammed lakes, rolling hills, and quiet Andalusian countryside.
Caminito del Rey, Ardales
Near Ardales, you may choose to park your bike and do the Caminito del Rey hike. Caminito del Rey is an ancient footpath connecting local villages, and it’s a system of wooden planks and rails cut into the living rock of the canyon. If you’re afraid of heights, tread carefully – oftentimes, the Caminito clings to steep, vertigo-inducing canyon walls. The views, however, are nothing short of spectacular.
Ronda, Southern Spain
Finally, the route will take you around the Sierra de Las Nieves national park famous for its excellent mountain views and the road to Ronda , Ernest Hemingway’s favorite town in Spain. “That is where you should go if you ever go to Spain on a honeymoon or if you ever bolt with anyone”, Hemingway has famously said about Ronda, and the best part is, the road to town is just as spectacular as the place itself. It’s twists and turns all the way, and you’ll see plenty of biker cafes on the roadside if you want to hang out with local riders.
When you hit the coast again, see if you can add Gibraltar to your route and enjoy the meandering coastal roads, or head back to Malaga to catch your flight.
Both of these routes can be combined or modified depending on how much time you have, what you’d like to see or visit, and what sort of roads appeal to you the most. Andalusia is the second largest region in Spain, and you can easily spend weeks exploring this magnificent wild country from Granada all the way to Cadiz. Bear in mind that Southern Spain sees very hot temperatures during the summer months, so your best bet is to ride here in spring or fall.
Eglé Gerulaityté is a motorcycle journalist and author. She works for calimoto's partner MOTOURISMO , the world's largest booking portal and online travel agency for motorcycle tours, training, and shipping. There you'll find many travel options quickly and easily, including Southern Spain motorcycle tour options.

Sierra de los filabres.
Connecting to the desert of the Province of Almeria, the Sierra de Los Filabres spreads from east to west over a distance of about 31 miles. The Sierra de Los Filabres is the largest mountain range of the Almería Province. Its highest peak, the 7,112 ft. high Calar Alto hosts one of the most important astronomical observatories in the region. Besides the Calar Alto, the 6843 ft. high Tetica de Bacares or "La Tetica" belongs to the highest summits of the Sierra de Los Filabres. The countryside offers stunning views of orchards of almond trees, citrus trees, and olive trees. The area is surrounded by dramatic hills and huge isolated valleys. Among the quaint mountain villages, there are abandoned fincas and pastures of wild thyme. We will enjoy an impressive ride over the challenging curves of the La Tetica pass road.
Puerto de Tiscar
The Puerto de Tíscar is not just a piece of rock, people have carved a path into it to get to the monastery Nuestra Señora de Tíscar. For the people living in the mountainous area around Cazorla it resembles also a historical and religious symbol. The surroundings of the Tiscar mountain may be rough, but exactly this fact allows us breathtaking views of the beautiful nature we're riding through. Speaking of which - for us motorcyclists there is this excellent pass road crossing over the mountain, allowing us even more enjoyment riding over it.
White Towns of Andalusia
Setenil, Grazalema and Olvera are only three of the famous white villages. Today gives you the opportunity to visit the beautiful village of Zahara de la Sierra. Situated above the Embalse de Zahara, at the side of a hill, it is a jewel among the Pueblos Blancos. It has won an award for its preservation of houses and historic layout of streets. It is truly worth the visit. A little further up the road, one of the oldest olive oil mills invites you to stop and take a closer look.
La Calahorra
The small town of Calahorra is awaiting us with an impressive surprise: The La Calahorra Castillo. While the 16. century castle may give you the impression of a fortress at first sight, its interior completely does resemble an Italian palace. Don Rodrigo de Mendoza, the constructor, had Italian construction drawings for the courtyard as well as designs for the ornamental sculptures. Consequently, the castle palace was strictly built according to those plans. After a long day on the motorcycle we highly recommend walking up to the castle to enjoy the 360° view from the top, which is especially beautiful at sunset.
Alhama de Granada
Alhama is a charming small town situated above a gorge. At the time when the Moors ruled Spain, the place was known as "Al hamma" (hot springs). The baths they built here can still be seen today at the Hotel Balneario. Narrow alleys with perfectly whitewashed houses lead to the Iglesia de la Encarnacion, built in the 16th century by a Catholic king. Some of the church vestments that the priests still wear today are said to have been embroidered by the then Queen Isabel herself.
Puerto de las Palomas
The Puerto de las Palomas could be called the extension of the pass road of the Puerto de Tiscar. Both passes belong to the mountain ranges inside the Sierra de Cazorla respectively the larger Sierra del Segura, which has even more passes for us to ride on. While the Puerto de Tiscar is mainly running along the mountains wit its nice sets of winding twists, the Puerto de las Palomas is doing the final crossing over the larger mountain.
Southern Spain Extreme 4AN
Spectacular roads, an endless blue sky and eternal sunshine: it just can't get any better.
Andalusia is not only known for its tasty tapas, colorful fiestas and passionate flamenco. Besides its breath-taking landscape and its historic highlights, Spain's sun-kissed South offers unbelievably curvy roads which will make every motorcycle rider's heart leap for joy. This stunning rider’s dream tour starts near Almería, in the sunny hinterland of the Costa del Sol. In this area, mountain ranges stretch off in every direction and are criss-crossed by amazing motorcycling roads. We move about this wonderland, hopping from range to range and from curve to curve, all day long. Cazorla National Park, Sierra de Morena, Las Alpujarras and Sierra Nevada – these are beautiful names of beautiful places full of beautiful roads, which we will discover. At least once in your life you have to ride the stunning roads of Andalusia: why not here and now?

IMTBIKE ROUTE rating
It is essential to know the different skill levels needed to participate in the IMTBIKE TOURS that are offered to you. IMTBIKE makes sure that it offers different tours for all riding styles and levels. The IMTBIKE team always works diligently in designing our routes. This is a laborious process which entails reviewing all road choices before selecting the best option for an IMTBIKE tour.
The most experienced motorcyclists looks for roads that require technical skill; narrow twisty roads with little traffic and endless curves. But these same roads would be too difficult for a less experienced rider.
The local driving habits, the amount of traffic, the asphalt quality and the radius of the curves vary considerably from country to country and even in different regions of the same country. They will also vary depending on the season of the year. All of these factors have been studied by IMTBIKE and have been taken into consideration when rating our tours.
IMTBIKE thinks it is also important to know about the different types of roads you will be enjoying on your tour. To understand the road types easier, IMTBIKE has divided them into two categories, and we have calculated an approximate percentage of each on all of our tours.
- TOURING ROADS: These are wider roads comprised mainly of larger radius sweepers. They are still curvy roads but not tight mountainous twisty curves. Please remember that you will ride very few straight roads on IMTBIKE tours!
- CHALLENGING ROADS: These are roads that are tight twisty turns which require more technical skill. Many times they will be narrower roads without a shoulder and sometimes with steep inclines or descents. Normally they will be mountainous roads accompanied by spectacular sceneries.
If you have never ridden a motorcycle outside of your country, or if you have little experience riding on mountain roads with many curves, we recommend that you choose a tour rated moderate or intermediate. If you have any questions or doubts please do not hesitate to call or email us. We are always happy to answer your questions to make sure that you choose the best tour for your riding level.
This route offers wider sweeping turns that are easy to maneuver. This route may have some tighter turns in a few places but this will be the exception. Regardless, even on moderate tours you must be able to ride a large cylinder motorcycle in any condition. Never plan to learn how to ride a motorcycle on an IMTBIKE tour. We recommend having a minimum of 8.000 km (5.000 miles) of experience riding a large cylinder motorcycle to participate on a MODERATE rated IMTBIKE Tour and you should ride a motorcycle on a regular basis at home.
Intermediate
This route rating can have sections of very twisty curves on narrow roads with no center line to divide the road. There will also wider radius curves on these routes. Traffic conditions can be intense at times in some urban environments and the local driving habits may seem aggressive and unpredictable to you. It is imperative that you are an experienced motorcyclist. We recommend that you have a minimum of 12.000 km (7500 miles) of large cylinder motorcycle experience to participate on a INTERMEDIATE rated IMTBIKE Tour and you should ride a motorcycle on a regular basis at home.
This route rating has long sections of technical narrow twisty roads and sometimes single lane roads. These twisty roads will often be in mountains where steep inclines and descents will be commonplace. Some riding days can be long and challenging. Traffic conditions can be intense at times in some urban environments and the local driving habits may seem aggressive and unpredictable to you. It is imperative that you are a very experienced motorcyclist on a large cylinder motorcycle. We recommend that you have a minimum of 16.000 km (10.000 miles) of large cylinder motorcycle experience on an ADVANCE rated IMTBIKE Tour and of course you should ride a motorcycle on a regular basis at home.
IMTBIKE Average Daily Riding Hours
5 to 7 hours 6 to 8 hours 7 to 9 hours
How many hours a day you ride on a tour is important information in helping you decide on the right IMTBIKE tour for you. Some tour members want to ride as many hours as possible everyday, while others prefer to stop more frequently and dedicate more time to enjoying the scenery, visiting cultural sights and arrive at the hotel earlier to relax before dinner. The daily riding hours are calculated including the coffee breaks and photo stops but they do not include the time taken for lunch.
Normally we’ll start our riding day at 9:30am and we will take about a one hour lunch break sometime between 1pm and 2pm. So if the daily riding hours for a given tour are 5-7, then you will arrive at the hotel between 3:30pm- 5:30pm depending on the average speed of the group.
