AARP’s Guide to Bermuda

Visit this colorful british island rich with history and beautiful pink-sand beaches.

aerial view of Bermuda

Nicholas DeRenzo,

There may be no better place to dip a toe back into post-pandemic international travel than Bermuda. At only about two hours from most East Coast cities, the British Overseas Territory is remarkably convenient for a quick weekend trip, and its thoughtful and diligent COVID-19 policies have kept its rate of infection low throughout the pandemic.

The odd mix of British colonial history and lush island setting makes for some only-in-Bermuda sights (Bermuda shorts with knee socks anyone?), and the dark rum is as plentiful as the sunshine. While it only takes a few days (and a few dark ’n’ stormies) to get on Bermuda’s slowed-down wavelength, you’ll want to keep coming back to immerse yourself in the culture, the sailing legacy, the nature and the cuisine. Here is our guide to the most colorful and fun-loving island in the North Atlantic.

COVID-19 Update

All adult visitors to Bermuda must be  fully vaccinated  and show proof of a negative PCR test (no more than four days before arrival) or supervised antigen test (no more than two days before arrival). Visitors must also fill out and submit a Travelers Authorization (TA) form, which costs $40 to process.

How to Get There

Bermuda is not located in the Caribbean but in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, about 600 miles off the coast of North Carolina. That location makes it especially convenient for travelers from the East Coast. In fact, you can reach Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport from New York, Boston, Philadelphia or Washington, D.C., in about two hours. The airport is served by American, Delta, JetBlue, United, Air Canada and WestJet.

Getting Around

Visitors might be surprised to learn that not only are rental cars not an option on the island, but residents are allowed only one automobile per household. More adventurous types can rent motor scooters, but if you’re nervous about navigating the curving roads on a two-wheeler, Bermuda also has a fleet of two-seat electric vehicles. They’re very compact — essentially just enclosed, eco-friendly golf carts — and you can rent them at a few different spots around the island. For instance, Current Vehicles’ Twizys, which can go 55 miles before needing a recharge, are available at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club. Remember that cars drive on the left side of the road, and the maximum speed limit is just 22 miles per hour. If you’d rather avoid driving, taxis are a safe bet, with prices regulated by the government, though they can get quite expensive. In addition, 11 bus and four ferry routes serve the island.

Where to Stay

One of the most stunning hotels to open recently is the beachfront St. Regis Bermuda Resort, which debuted last May in the shadow of Fort St. Catherine on the island’s East End. The original St. Regis in New York is the 1934 birthplace of the Bloody Mary, and each subsequent location has its own regional spin: The one available at the sunny lobby bar is called the Gates Bay Mary, made with Gosling’s Black Seal rum, Outerbridge’s Original Sherry Peppers (a local hot sauce), lemon juice and a fennel-heavy signature spice blend. The new-build hotel, complete with a spa and a golf course, is an homage to Bermudan vernacular architecture, yet you’ll still find the brand’s trademark “rituals” here, such as Champagne sabrage out on the deck. Even if you don’t stay at the St. Regis, it’s worth visiting for a drink.

Elsewhere on the island, more affordable options include The Oxford House, a 1938 bed-and-breakfast in downtown Hamilton that got a complete refresh last year; the family-run Greenbank Guest House & Cottages, which features subtropical gardens and a two-century-old main building; and the Fourways Inn, a poolside “cottage colony” managed by one of the finest old-school restaurants in Paget Parish. If you’re one of the many Americans who love pickleball, consider staying at the Pompano Beach Club, which converted three of its clay tennis courts into pickleball courts in spring 2020.

What and Where to Eat

Bermuda’s answer to the po’boy or the Philly cheesesteak is its own humble, messy, bread-based signature dish, the fish sandwich: battered and fried fish (usually snapper, wahoo or grouper) with tartar sauce and coleslaw on raisin bread (yes, you read that right!), plus add-ons like hot sauce, cheddar, lettuce, tomato or grilled onions. Every resort and restaurant has its own take, but you should make the pilgrimage to off-the-beaten-path Art Mel’s Spicy Dicy, on the north shore, or the Seaside Grill, where your fish was probably caught that morning.

Another old Bermuda standby is its tomato-based fish chowder, which is often served with two tiny shakers of black rum and sherry pepper sauce so you can doctor the recipe to your liking. Favorite spots in Hamilton include The Lobster Pot, Wahoo’s Bistro & Patio (which also sells takeout chowder by the gallon) and Harry’s, on the waterfront.

Other standouts in the “big city” of Hamilton include Bolero Brasserie, a neighborhood tapas bar serving dishes like ham and octopus croquettes and rabbit leg with chickpeas; Pearl, whose sashimi offerings include thinly sliced rockfish usuzukuri as well as octopus carpaccio with dried cranberries and pistachios; and Devil’s Isle, a café with a creative menu that includes beer-battered rockfish tacos and excellent single-origin coffee.

For pure ambience, it’s hard to beat Tom Moore’s Tavern, which occupies a private home dating back to 1652. The restaurant has served such famous folks as Prince Charles, and its fine-dining menu includes such dishes as duck breast pan-roasted with sticky fig and nut compote, and baked garlic escargot. For a very different kind of ambience, don’t miss the no-frills Swizzle Inn, Bermuda’s oldest pub, which is known for its rum swizzle, a dangerously drinkable punch invented 90 years ago that’s made with Gosling’s Black Seal and Gold Seal rums, orange, pineapple and lemon juices, fruit liqueurs and falernum. As their unofficial motto goes, “Swizzle Inn, swagger out.”

Things to Do

For nature lovers: Bird-watchers won’t have to go out of their way to spot some of the island’s nearly 400 species, including the white-tailed tropicbird (or longtail), which can often be seen floating elegantly over the surf — and can always be seen on the back of the Bermudan $50 bill. If you’re extremely lucky, you may be able to catch sight of the Bermuda petrel (or cahow), which was thought to be extinct for 300 years before it was rediscovered in 1951. Otherwise, the island is dotted with fantastic spots for nature-watching, including Spittal Pond Nature Reserve and Walsingham Nature Reserve (also called Tom Moore’s Jungle), a mix of mangrove forests, caves and drowned sinkholes.

Crystal and Fantasy Caves are filled with otherworldly stalactites and stalagmites. Visitors explore them via a series of floating pontoons over an underwater lake. Back up on dry land, you can cover the most ground by foot, bike or even horseback on the 18-mile Railway Trail, which follows a defunct rail bed.

For history buffs: The territorial capital of Hamilton is home to its fair share of historic buildings, but to truly immerse yourself in Bermudan history, head to the East End town of St. George’s. Founded in 1612 after the wreck of the Sea Venture (an event that was said to have inspired Shakespeare’s The Tempest ), it’s the oldest surviving English town in the New World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Highlights include the whitewashed St. Peter’s Church , the oldest Anglican church outside the British Isles (it was rebuilt after a devastating hurricane in 1712, but its 1612 Communion table and 1660 cedar pulpit are still used today); narrow cobblestone passages with names like Shinbone Alley and Silk Alley; the 1752 Tucker House Historic House and Museum, which is filled with antiques and artifacts found during an archaeological dig; and the open-roofed Unfinished Church, where construction began in the 1870s and, well, you can probably guess the rest.

St. George’s is also home to the bookstore Long Story Short, which offers a number of themed guided tours around the island, including one called “Resilience: Bermudians of African Descent” that traces the history of slavery and emancipation in Bermuda.

For golfers: When it opened last year, the St. Regis resort came with a bonus: A refurbished golf course in St. George’s that had been sitting unplayed has been reborn as the Five Forts Golf Club. As its name suggests, the course’s 18 holes dip in and around five historic forts, teeing off from Fort Victoria, which was built in 1842.

The incredibly scenic Tucker’s Point Golf Course celebrates its 90th anniversary this year. Buffeted by challenging, changeable coastal winds, the hilly course offers views of the surrounding sea. Nearby, the Mid Ocean Club is a private members’ club, but visitors can play midweek, based on availability. The golf course opened in 1921, and the club has earned a place in history as the site of summits between President Dwight D. Eisenhower and two British prime ministers, in the 1950s.

If you’re looking for a totally new type of golf experience (or simply don’t want to lug or rent expensive clubs), the Turtle Hill Golf Club at the Fairmont Southampton is pioneering a new sport called FootGolf, which involves kicking a soccer ball across the course and into oversize golf cups. It will most definitely make you feel like a kid again.

For beach lovers: Famed for their pink sand (the result of single-celled organisms called foraminifera), Bermuda’s beaches are beautiful year-round — though locals don’t get in the water until the unofficial Bermuda Day kickoff on the last Friday in May. There are stretches of sand for all kinds of beachgoers: sweeping Horseshoe Bay Beach for sunbathing, Warwick Long Bay for snorkeling among parrotfish, West Whale Bay Beach for spotting humpbacks breaching off shore. One of the most impossibly photogenic places on the whole island is Jobson’s Cove, a pocket-sized beach set among jagged rock formations that’s accessible via a trail from Warwick Long Bay. It’s so serene and hidden in plain sight that we almost hesitate to let the cat out of the bag.

A day at the beach doesn’t have to involve simply sitting in the sun: More adventurous options include diving among the island’s famed shipwrecks, catching air on a kite board with Upwind Sports, going on a guided kayak tour with BDA Watersports or catching a bioluminescent display on a full-moon, glass-bottomed boat cruise with the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.

The Best Things to Do in Bermuda

From history buffs to nature lovers and everyone in between, there's something for all types of travelers in Bermuda.

Whether your ideal island getaway includes lounging on breathtaking beaches, snorkeling among vibrant reefs rich with marine life, indulging in luxurious spa treatments, or feasting on world-class cuisine (or maybe a bit of everything), Bermuda has it all.

And thanks to its sub-tropical climate, Bermuda weather is generally mild year-round, so there’s never a bad time to visit. An abundance of blue skies and bright sunshine is typical, while gentle trade winds temper the summer heat and create some of the world’s best sailing conditions.

If you’re traveling with your family, your friends, or your special someone, a Bermuda vacation offers no shortage of unforgettable things to see and do. Here are some of our favorites.

KenWiedemann/Getty Images

Grab a Twizy and Hit the South Shore

Bermuda is well known for its moped culture, but there’s one other fun new way for visitors to explore the island: By renting a Twizy . Standing for “twin” and “easy,” the two-seater electric Twizy is designed by Renault’s Formula One racing team and can travel up to 50 miles on a single charge. But don’t worry if you plan to cruise all day — you can power up at your hotel or various “Oasis Points” around the island.

Take an Underground Cave Excursion

Bermuda’s spectacular scenery doesn’t stop at the beaches. Go on an underground guided tour to discover the otherworldly beauty of Crystal Caves, located in Hamilton Parish. Formed during the Ice Age and discovered in the early 1900s, this fascinating subterranean world features dramatic limestone formations (hanging stalactites and protruding stalagmites) surrounding a deep, crystal-clear lake. Fun fact: According to the Bermuda Tourism Authority, celebrated author Mark Twain was the first tourist to descend into the Crystal Caves in 1908. The caves also inspired Jim Henson’s beloved 1980s series, Fraggle Rock .

Reel in a Fish Sandwich from Art Mel’s

From local dives to fine dining restaurants, the fish sandwich is a menu staple at Bermuda’s eateries, but none has a cult following quite like the legendary fish sandwich from Art Mel’s Spicy Dicy in Hamilton. Stop by this tiny takeaway joint for an exceptionally tasty — and oversized — version of the local favorite: Well-seasoned, delicately fried fish piled high with tangy coleslaw on fluffy raisin bread. Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has raved that it’s “the biggest and best-fried fish sandwich I have ever had.” (Insider tip: Drizzle on the local hot sauce and wash it down with a ginger beer.)

Trek Along the Bermuda Railway Trail

Spanning from one end of the island to the other, the Railway Trail follows eighteen miles of abandoned railbed that winds through picturesque landscapes and along rocky coastlines. Explore the trail by foot or rent bikes at the Royal Naval Dockyard and head south on a leisurely ride full of breathtaking views and natural wonders. As you make your way through the South Shore, stop to discover the postcard-worthy beaches, secluded coves, and lush nature reserves along the way.

Enjoy Afternoon Tea at Lili Bermuda

This famed perfumery offers intoxicating fragrances evoking the island's natural beauty — all handcrafted on-site. At the historic St. George’s location, guests can experience Bermuda’s British heritage with a traditional afternoon tea service, offered every Wednesday and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Relax in a flower-filled garden as you indulge in a selection of fine teas served with finger sandwiches, fresh pastries, and petit fours made by the local bakery, Sweet P.

Shop Along Hamilton’s Front Street

Whether you’re searching for unique souvenirs, local art, home décor, or stylish fashions, you’re bound to find fantastic shopping in Hamilton. Bermuda’s capital city is the main hub for charming boutiques and studios from the island’s creative artisans. Wander down Front Street, Hamilton’s bustling waterfront promenade, to find something for every type of shopper. Two of the most popular picks include pink sand necklaces from Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery and colorful TABS (The Authentic Bermuda Shorts) from A.S. Cooper & Sons: Man on Front Street. Added bonus: There’s no sales tax when you shop in Bermuda.

Zip Around the Island on a Jet Ski

Jet skiing is one of the greatest ways to experience high-speed thrills on the water and see remote parts of a destination, but it’s especially exhilarating in Bermuda because visitors can explore the Great Sound — a serene body of water bordered by land on three sides and open to the Atlantic Ocean. Guests glide through Hamilton Harbour and past impressive yachts and sailboats on the Straits of Paradise. As you zoom over the crystal clear waters, you’ll get a glimpse of the extravagant homes dotting the shores on Millionaires Row and can travel along the America’s Cup racecourse route.

Go Wild at Awesome Animal Attractions

One of the island’s top family-friendly attractions is the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo (BAMZ). Located in Flatts Village, it's a place where you can get up close and personal with playful seals, fascinating sharks, and many other creatures housed in naturalistic habitats.

Belly Up to the Bar at Yours Truly

From the Rum Swizzle to the Dark and Stormy, cocktails are an essential part of the island’s rich culinary culture. When it’s time to unwind, venture to Yours Truly , a speakeasy hot spot in Hamilton that offers an experience unlike any other in Bermuda. Expect handcrafted libations using local ingredients and house-made syrups, bitters, and infused liquors. The dedicated mixologists concoct new cocktail recipes weekly and even hand-carve the ice.

Check Out Art at the “Pink Palace”

Imagine an art museum inside a hotel. That’s what you’ll find at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club. Known as the “Pink Palace” because of its rosy facade, the iconic resort underwent extensive renovations and now has an impressive collection of Pop and Modern Art. Magnificent work from Andy Warhol, Banksy, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, and other well-known names is displayed throughout the hotel for guests to enjoy. Guided tours are offered every Saturday at 10 a.m. through the hotel.

Unwind at a Spa in a Cave

As previously noted, Bermuda is home to some magically beautiful caves. But did you know that you can get pampered in one? The rustic Natura Spa at Grotto Bay Beach Resort offers signature spa treatments inside the property’s natural Serenity Cave, which was discovered in 1609. Imagine getting a relaxing massage while gazing down into the cave’s mesmerizing sapphire mineral waters (ahhh…). This truly one-of-a-kind experience invites you to connect with nature while recharging your spirit.

Discover Hidden Gems on a Local Tour

Delve into Bermuda’s only jungle with an all-inclusive eco-tour from Hidden Gems . This sensational adventure includes a jungle hike, subterranean cave explorations, and cliff-jumping into sparkling turquoise waters. You’ll also be treated to sweeping views at St. David’s Battery, one of the island’s highest points, before snorkeling and unwinding on the pink sands of secluded Cooper’s Island beach. Even better, the tour includes all necessary gear, plus lunch, snacks, and bottled water — making this excursion a no-brainer.

Take a Dip in Blue Hole Park

Yes, Bermuda is beloved for its beaches, but don’t overlook its other swimmable options, including the absolutely stunning Blue Hole Park . The 12-acre park comes with plenty of lush vegetation, all leading to a network of underground tunnels and pools, including the Blue Hole, which you are free to swim in. There’s free parking here, as well as easy-to-follow trails that will lead you right to the destination.

Bermuda Botanical Gardens

Take in the glorious sights and smells at the Bermuda Botanical Gardens , a 36-acre park that’s home to Bermuda’s most beautiful endemic plant species as well as plants gathered from all over the globe. There’s also plenty for the little ones to enjoy too, including a hedge maze and butterfly gardens.

Get a Scoop at Bailey's Bay Ice Cream Parlour

Temperatures tend to hover on the warm side here, making a scoop or two of ice cream an absolute necessity. For the best of Bermuda, make your way to Bailey's Bay Ice Cream Parlour , a pastel-hued establishment known for its spectacular array of flavors. Get a sherbert, sorbet, ice cream, or go all out with a sundae, because it’s vacation, why not?

Fort St. Catherine

Get a better glimpse into Bermuda’s history with a visit to Fort St. Catherine . The fort, constructed in 1614, showcases an impressive collection of artifacts from the island’s unique history. Guests can peruse its galleries, take in the sweeping views of the pink-sand beaches below, or walk over its drawbridge to feel like they’ve walked right into a fairytale.

Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute

For more aquatic action, pay a visit to the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI), a 40,000-square-foot science center. Here, guests can take part in a simulated dive experience that them 1,200 feet below the surface of the sea, where they’ll encounter whales, sharks, and more sea life to help them get to know the surrounding waters a bit better.

Hartley's Undersea Walk

Want the real thing instead of a simulation? Come try Hartley's Undersea Walk . Sort of a mix between diving and snorkeling, the walk involves wearing a bubble helmet, which allows participants to easily breathe and see the surrounding sea life all at once. Each walk is about 30 to 40 minutes, and the entire journey takes about three hours.

Gibbs Hill Lighthouse

For one of the best views in Bermuda, make your way to Gibbs Hill Lighthouse , then all the way to the top of its 185 steps. Built in 1846, the lighthouse stands 117 feet tall and gives visitors a spectacular view of the verdant landscape below, disappearing into azure waters. The lighthouse is also one for the record books as it’s the oldest cast iron lighthouse in the world.

Lounge at Horseshoe Bay Beach

There’s a reason Horseshoe Bay Beach is one of the most photographed places in Bermuda — it’s downright stunning. The crescent-shaped beach comes with soft, baby-pink sand lapped by gin-clear waters beckoning visitors to take a dip. The beach is also a well-serviced one, with easy public transport, lifeguards, and beach loungers available for rent from end to end.

Suggested Itineraries in Bermuda

For visitors on the run, who are forced by their schedules to see Bermuda in anywhere from 1 to 3 days, we've devised a trio of self-guided tours, written as three 1-day itineraries. With these ready-made itineraries, you can have a complete, unforgettable trip, even though time is short.

You can cover much of Bermuda, especially the harbor City of Hamilton and the historic town of St. George, on foot. A week's visit will let you break up your sightseeing trips with time on the beach, boating, or engaging in some of the island's other outdoor activities, such as golf or scuba diving. Hitting the beach is the first priority for most visitors -- but you don't need us to tell you how to schedule your time in the sun.

Planning Pointer -- It's enlightening to take a ferry ride around the inner harbor before or after your City of Hamilton walking tour. You can get an overview of the City of Hamilton before concentrating on specific landmarks or monuments, or gain a new perspective on what you've just seen.

Island-Hopping on Your Own

Most first-time visitors think of Bermuda as one island, but in fact it's a small archipelago. Many of the islands that make up the chain are uninhabited. If you're a bit of a skipper, you can explore them on your own. With a little guidance and the proper maps, you can discover small islands, out-of-the-way coral reefs, and hidden coves that seem straight out of the old Brooke Shields B-movie The Blue Lagoon.

For this boating adventure, rent a Boston Whaler with an outboard engine. The name of these small but sturdy boats reveals their origins: New Englanders once used similar boats in their pursuit of Moby Dick. It's important to exercise caution, remembering that the English found Bermuda in 1612 only after the Sea Venture, en route to the Jamestown Colony, was wrecked off the Bermuda coast.

In the East End, you can explore Castle Harbour, which is almost completely surrounded by islands, forming a protected lake. If you stop to do some fishing, snapper will be your likely catch. (Visitors who rent condos or apartments often take their quarry back to their kitchenette to prepare it for dinner.) To avoid the often-powerful swells, drop anchor on the west side of Castle Harbour, near Castle Harbour Golf Club and Tucker's Town. Then head across Tucker's Town Bay to Castle Island and Castle Island Nature Reserve. In 1612, Governor Moore ordered the construction of a fort on Castle Island, the ruins of which you can see today.

In the West End, begin your exploration by going under Somerset Bridge into well-protected Ely's Harbour. To the north, you can visit Cathedral Rocks before making a half-circle to Somerset Village; from here, you can explore the uninhabited islands off Mangrove Bay.

Sail-yourself boats are available to rent for 2, 4 (half-day), and 8 (full-day) hours. A number of places charter yachts with licensed skippers. Try the marketplace site www.getmyboat.com .

Note : This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Learn more about Intrepid's COVID-19 policy

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid adventures are for travelers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're traveling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m traveling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

Learn more about solo travel

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travelers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

The 10 Best Trips for Seniors and Retirees Who Love to Travel

Getaways for your golden years.

O ne of the wonderful things about hitting retirement age is having the flexibility in your schedule to go out and explore the world. If you're looking for trips for seniors, you're in luck: InsureMyTrip recently released its list of the top 10 cities around the world for senior travel, making it easier than ever for people over age 60 to find the ideal spot for their next vacation. (We think some of them sound like the best places to retire too.)

To determine the top 10 trips for seniors, the folks at InsureMyTrip evaluated a handful of travel considerations for cities around the world. Those included the ease of walking in the city, access to health care, public transportation, the number of tours for seniors and peacefulness. You'll notice that many of the best places to travel in your golden years are also great for traveling on a budget .

And before you ask: Yes, travel is a good idea for anyone who's able, regardless of whether they're age 60, 70 or beyond. In fact, travel helps keep us young. "We know loneliness affects older Americans disproportionately, and the importance of social connections only increases as we age," says James Moses, president and CEO of Road Scholar, one of our favorite tour companies . "[Travel provides] enriching, meaningful, stimulating social connections to hundreds of thousands of older adults."

Ready to find out which trips for seniors over 60 made the cut? Read on for the top picks, in order.

1. Istanbul, Turkey

Best for: Activities

Coming in at No. 1 in InsureMyTrip's list of trips for seniors is Istanbul. "Istanbul's recognition as the best destination for senior citizens highlights its cultural richness with highly rated things to do and high-quality health-care services," says Sarah Webber of InsureMyTrip. Cosmopolitan Istanbul is a cultural and ethnic melting pot, a unique city straddling two continents (Europe and Asia), with Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and modern Turkish structures—it's a skyline of domes and minarets made up of mosques, churches and synagogues, palaces, castles and towers—and of course, incredible cultural landmarks, including the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque.

The Turkish city scored highly across many of the metrics, particularly for its quality of things to do (a rating of 4.63 out of 5), health care and ease of walking.

2. Athens, Greece

Best for: Guided tours

An absolute must-visit highlight of Greece is the city of Athens, which offers a unique mixture of modern buildings and ancient monuments. You'll find bustling cosmopolitan streets lined with shops and international hotels, but turn any corner and the views of the storied Acropolis appear before you. More than 22% of the population is over 65 years old, so it's no wonder the city has a large number of guided tours aimed at senior citizens—an astounding 181, according to InsureMyTrip.

3. Rome, Italy

Best for: Ancient architecture

It's hard to talk about visiting Italy without starting at this classical city, where contemporary culture stands shoulder to shoulder with ancient architecture. Landmarks of the Eternal City include the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, and you can even travel to another country by crossing into Vatican City to see the Sistine Chapel. "The inclusion of Rome in the top three destinations for senior citizens is thanks to its number of tours for senior citizens [107] and high-quality things to do, making it a dream city for many elderly travelers," says Webber. "The average age of the population [47 years old] is among the highest in the study, making it ideally suited for older travelers."

4. Bangkok, Thailand

Best for: A great deal

Bangkok is the spot to head to for affordable bucket-list travel . Here, golden temples and palaces line the winding Chao Phraya River, and travelers can take advantage of affordable luxuries such as authentic Thai spas, with prices starting as low as $10 for a two-hour massage, incredible local cuisine for just a few dollars and a ride on a tuk-tuk costing just $1.50 an hour. Bangkok's quality of things to do (rated 4.51 out of 5)—hello, golden-Buddha-filled temples—and health care (a rating of 77 out of 100) helped secure its spot in the top five trips for seniors.

5. Tallinn, Estonia

Best for: Holiday markets and winter charm

There are definitely some surprises in the survey, says Webber, including multiple spots in Eastern Europe that fill the middle of the list, starting with Tallinn. "Eastern European cities are hidden gems for senior citizens," she says. "[They] are perhaps lesser-known vacation destinations, but this study highlights they have plenty to offer for senior citizens."

Tallinn has been experiencing what InsureMyTrip calls "a boom in tourism," with a 33% increase in foreign tourism this year, according to SchengenVisaInfo.com. The quality of things to do (rated 4.61 out of 5) and health care contribute to its high score. This well-preserved medieval city is beautiful to visit anytime, but it's one of our favorite snow-covered towns to visit in winter, when the lights of the Old Town against the snow create plenty of warmth. Any time of year, stroll the historic district and visit the walled fortifications; then stop into a cafe for a coffee or wine.

6. Vilnius, Lithuania

Best for: Attractions

Another Eastern European gem, the Lithuanian city of Vilnius offers great value for your money as soon as you step off the plane. Just taking the train from Vilnius Airport to the city's center is only 89 cents. But it's not just bargain-price travel that make this an appealing destination. The survey found that Vilnius had the best-rated attractions, earning it a rating of 4.66 out of 5 for the quality of things to do there. You'll find a mix of museums, gardens and historic sites, including a Baroque-architecture-filled Old Town. And don't miss the 16th-century Gates of Dawn, which contain an icon from the Virgin Mary.

7. Prague, Czech Republic

Best for: Walking

Prague isn't just one of the top trips for seniors; it's also one of our favorite hidden gems in Europe. The perfectly preserved city has bright red trolleys traversing original cobblestone streets hemmed in by charming stone buildings. Around every corner, you'll find a new treat, like the Charles Bridge, which is lined with majestic stone statues, Michelin-starred restaurants and classic pilsner bars. Another highlight: an entire "castle district" centered around majestic Prague Castle. It ranks high on the survey for its walkability and public transportation, making it an easy city to explore without worrying about needing a ride.

8. Riga, Latvia

Best for: Performing arts

Rounding out the list of under-the-radar gems of Eastern Europe is Latvia's coastal capital city of Riga, which sits right on the Baltic Sea. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features a maze of medieval streets dotted with Gothic and Baroque churches and hidden courtyards. The lively new town is an expanse of wide boulevards filled with elegant Art Nouveau architecture.

There's no shortage of places to go in Europe , but Riga scored high for the quality of things to do. One example: The Latvian National Opera dates back to 1782 and presents hundreds of opera and ballet performances throughout the year. Hungry? You're in luck. Riga is the home of the largest food hall in Europe, Riga Central Market.

9. Berlin, Germany

Best for: Museums

A dynamic and modern metropolis, Berlin draws travelers from all corners of the globe to experience its modern arts, nightlife and historic cultural sites, including Museum Island (five popular museums on a Spree River island) and the Brandenburg Gate. Reminders of the city's complicated past—including the graffitied remnants of the Berlin Wall—are ever-present and absolutely worth visiting. Want to experience a different side of Berlin? Go gallery hopping, eat street food at Markthalle Neun, wander through the diverse Kreuzberg neighborhood or see a burlesque show. And don't worry about aging out of Berlin; the InsureMyTrip survey found that the city has one of the highest average ages (48) in the world; only Tokyo ranked higher, with an average age of 49.

10. Helsinki, Finland

Best for: Public transportation

The capital of Finland is one of the least polluted capital cities in the world. One reason, according to The Telegraph , is that residents routinely use public transportation and bicycles to get around (the city makes it easy by maintaining roughly 2,400 miles worth of cycle lanes). It's also the most honest city in the world, according to a Reader's Digest study—in our test, 11 out of 12 people returned a lost wallet.

On the survey, Helsinki also scored high for health services, so you won't have to worry no matter what the day holds. You can bike to Esplanade Park to relax at a free outdoor concert, tour Suomenlinna (Fortress of Finland) or visit one of the seaside city's many museums, including the Finnish Museum of Photography, the contemporary art museum or the National Museum of Finland.
