With vacation season in full swing, there’s no better time to pare down your beauty assortment to curate your must-have travel makeup essentials. Whether you’re adhering to TSA guidelines or just want to pack lightly, most of us will not be traveling with our complete makeup collection.

While planning your trip details and what to wear are certainly exciting tasks, editing your beauty stash can actually be quite stressful. The entire process makes one reflect on what you’ll need on hand once you reach your destination—especially if you’re going somewhere without a drug store for last-minute beauty buys. Regardless, you’ll want at least one complexion product to even skin tone and veil imperfections, along with multitasking pigments to bring warmth and subtle color to the face. And let’s not forget how you’ll store all your makeup to avoid spills or damage.

Here, we’ve created the ultimate makeup packing guide for your summer holiday and beyond.

Trusted Organizers

First things first, determine what travel makeup organizers work best for you. Maybe you already own the best toiletry bag that can fit both your skin-care and makeup necessities, or perhaps you’d prefer to store them separately. Away’s water-resistant case offers spacious compartments, transparent pockets, and even a detachable makeup brush organizer—perfect to secure in your carry-on. Otherwise, consider Longchamp’s zippered pouch, which is compact enough to pop in your purse or personal item for easy access.

From the Oscars red carpet to the Met Gala , experts wax on about the importance of skin prep for glowing, beautiful skin with or without makeup. So, rely on skin-nourishing products and face primers to prep your base. We’d reach for Tatcha’s The Silk Canvas to weightlessly nourish, blur, protect, and prime—or, the French beauty favorite Embryolisse cream to restore skin moisture and leave a satin finish.

Multitasking Tools

Maybe you’re fine with applying all of your makeup products with your fingers. If not though, don’t forget to pack the beauty tools you rely on at home to perfect your look. For brushes , consider a dual-ended option that pairs two different brush types in one, like this Hourglass option suitable for powder, bronzer, blush, and highlighter. On the other hand, classics like the Beautyblender sponge make blending liquid, cream, and powder products a dream.

Foolproof Complexion

Selecting your vacation complexion products is arguably the hardest part, with so many different types of foundations, concealers, and powders to choose from—many of us requiring multiple shades for a brightened under-eye or combat hyperpigmentation. You can’t go wrong with Ilia’s Super Serum Skin Tint for lightweight, dewy coverage that even boasts sun protection and nourishing ingredients (read: niacinamide, squalane, and hyaluronic acid). For concealer, the Kosas’s creamy formula not only offers dewy medium coverage, but brightens, soothes, and plumps skin over time thanks to a blend of caffeine, peptides, vitamins, and hyaluronic acid. Seriously, who can say no to efficacious clean concealers and foundations ?

Set the Look

Even on vacation, it’s important to lock your look in place appropriately. Charlotte Tilbury’s setting powder is excellent to have on hand to reduce shine and blur skin where you need it, earning bonus points for mess-free application (as opposed to loose setting powder options). Then, spritz your face with Supergoop!’s mist that sets and protects against UV rays and pollutants. In fact, a similar formula by the brand saved Vogue commerce writer Alexis Bennett’s makeup during Coachella .

Enticing Eyes

Bring your go-to eye look on your tip by way of the best mascara and eyeliners —both of which work wonders to make your eyes pop and enhance their shape. For smudge-free lengthening and lifting, reach for Merit’s clean mascara. To perfect your signature wing or add some dimension to your look, Ilia’s liquid water-proof formula allows you to precisely etch liner however you see fit, thanks to a fine felt tip.

Tinted Lips

Makeup artists say that the key to nailing a minimalist makeup look is adding an accent of color. One of the easiest ways to do so throughout travel is by keeping a tinted lip product on hand for a statement-making moment. Kosas’s gloss delivers a lip filler effect by visibly plumping the lips—especially if paired with a lip color complementing liner. Not a big gloss fan? Reach for Merit’s satiny lipstick for sheer, buildable color no matter the occasion.

Adaptable Color

We’ve quickly become huge blush enthusiasts, from viral TikTok picks to the best cream formulas. Either way, blendable blushes, and multipurpose color pigments allow you to customize your glow and place colors wherever you want. Versatility is key on any kind of vacation. Tap Merit’s creamy tint across the eyes, lips, and cheeks for a skin-like wash of color. Prefer a liquid formula? Saie’s water-based Dew Blush creates a natural tint after just one dot from its doe foot applicator—blended with one of the previously mentioned makeup tools.

Glam Optional

Maybe your travels are for a wedding or gala that requires full glam, or maybe you’re not quite sure what your itinerary entails. Nevertheless, a few products specific for camera-ready, longwear glam is essential. Think false lashes to amp up the drama; with this Velour Lashes kit, you have everything you need to apply natural-looking lashes on the go without trimming or measuring. Finally, the last thing you want during full glam is an unnecessary bout of shine. Stop oil in its tracks with Tatcha’s blotting papers without budging your look—housed in packaging small enough to fit in your party handbag or clutch .

On my recent trip to Europe, I managed to do my daily hair and makeup in ten – fifteen minutes. Considering it usually takes me at least twice as long, I’m pretty happy! Not only does this save me time while traveling but I’ve also continued this routine at home, too. So easy and effortless! Find out my latest travel beauty hacks! (Pics below!)

Travel Beauty Hacks

Table of contents.

I’ve never been a fake eyelash kinda gal because I’m too clumsy to apply them myself. Recently, however, I got semi-permanent  4D Russian eyelashes after seeing just about every woman in my town wearing them. Being curious about why all these women were obsessed about the eyelashes, I finally gave in and tried it for myself.

Wow! Why had I waited so long? They’re fantastic!!

My eyelashes may look great but  I’m less focused about their appearance and more obsessed with their  benefits . What I find astounding is that I don’t have to wear any eye makeup. Nothing. No eye shadow. No eyeliner. No mascara. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Zero.

In fact,  I hardly have to wear any makeup at all,  making my life way easier and more hassle free. I save time at home and on the go.

Makeup/Hair Routine

Below are my before and after pictures with and without makeup. My new everyday AND travel makeup/hair routine is less than 15 minutes:

travel-beauty-hacks

Non-edited, NO filter pic wearing only the new semi-permanent eye lashes and wand styled haired (mentioned below)  without any makeup.

travel-beauty-hacks

A minute or two later still wearing no makeup but  I’ve added Tinted Brow Gel , which is one of my new favorite time-saving beauty hacks.

travel-beauty-hacks

Five minutes later, I’ve added primer, concealer, two blush colors, powder, and tinted lip gloss.  I’m still using six makeup products but I’ve eliminated all my eye makeup , which previously consisted of a four-shadow palette, two double-ended makeup brushes, mascara, and eyeliner.

These are the makeup products I used in the pic :

  • Charlotte Tilbury Wonder Glow primer
  • Nars Creamy Concealer in Custard
  • MAC Powder Blush in Harmony
  • Nars Blush in Orgasm
  • MAC Studio Fix Powder
  • Nars Lip Gloss in Super Orgasm

Not only did I save space on my recent Europe trip but I’m also saving valuable travel time, too! As I relished in the excitement of these new lashes, I started to think about all the other awesome beauty shortcuts I’ve found recently.

Time-Saving Travel Beauty Hacks

Here are a few of my top time-saving travel beauty hacks:

Beautaniq Beauty Fill + Tame Brow Gel

Tinted Brow Gel

I’ve been using the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz for years but have failed to become a brow maven even after watching endless (okay, a couple of) YouTube tutorials. Due to poor technique and laziness, I started using powder instead of a pencil to fill them in.

And then the postman knocks on my door to deliver my monthly  Birchbox shipment. I eagerly opened it up to find a product I’d never used before: tinted brow gel. I tried the  Beautaniq Beauty Fill + Tame Brow Gel  and loved it! It’s such an easy way to add a bit of color to my eyebrows!

The result is a natural finish, which I love, and it takes me just a few seconds to brush the color on. I love the ease of this product. Pair the eyebrow gel with the semi-permanent eye lashes and my eye makeup routine just went from twenty to thirty minutes down to one minute.

Yay! I’m on to a winner.

AfterSpa Magic Make Up Remover

Reusable Makeup Remover Cloth

The AfterSpa Magic Make Up Remover is another product I got in my  Birchbox , which has been helpful in cleansing my face in the shower without wetting my eyelashes. Because of the eyelash extensions, I have to be more careful with the way I wash my face.

Some travelers love this product for travel, too, because it eliminates the need to use liquid face wash.

InfinitiPro by Conair Tourmaline Ceramic Curling Wand

Waving Wand

I bought the Tresemme Perfectly (un)Done Waving Wand (which is now sold out) a couple of years ago in England and was using it only occasionally until now. It’s made my life so much easier! This InfinitiPro by Conair Tourmaline Ceramic Curling Wand is a similar one.

All I do is blow dry or air dry my hair, brush it out, and use the wand to style it. I split my hair into approximately ten sections and curl each about 30 seconds. With the wand  my unruly frizzy hair is tamed and glam in less than ten minutes !!!

My hair looks like I’ve spent a million hours fixing it when in reality I just wrap random pieces of my hair around the wand and twist however I can maneuver my hand around without getting burned. Because the waves are random, they disguise my curly roots as they start frizzing throughout the day.

Note: time to dry my hair isn’t included in my 10-15 minute prep time.

Gelish Mini Sassy Intergalactic Glam

In my attempt to find the most cost effective nail option in England, I discovered Gelish manicures and pedicures. Your nail polish dries immediately and then stays on until you have it removed, meaning I only have to go to the nail salon once a month and I will actually have nice nails during that time not semi-chipped nails. Yesss!

Aside from saving my time (and patience), my nail color also lasts longer, even when I’m traveling and scuba diving, spending prolonged periods of time in the water.

Here are some tips on how to make your vacation manicure last longer!

Oral-B 5000 Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush

Electric Toothbrush Upgrade

Lastly, I learned an unexpected travel beauty hack when I upgraded my electric toothbrush a few months back to one of the models in the  Oral-B 5000 Electric Toothbrush  series. After extensive research, I found an electric toothbrush that was more powerful than the one I had but not overpriced with all kinds of features I didn’t need.

I’m unbelievably satisfied with my choice. Aside from feeling happy with my dental hygiene this particular device can go two weeks without charging!

The “hack” is that I don’t have to pack a charger so this saves me space and time because it’s one less thing to worry about in my beauty routine while on the go. On trips that are under ten days, I leave the charger at home.

Note: this is my favorite toothpaste so I decant it into one of these containers whenever I travel.

Overall, my hair and makeup are done so much faster yet I look more done up than before. That’s a big win in my book. All these little travel beauty hacks add up to save time and suitcase space, too!

Love your eyelashes. Did you go to a salon to have them applied?

Alex

Hi Kathy, I started with 4D but now use the 6D volume lashes (also known as Russian lashes). They last about 2-4 weeks and you can get them filled every 2-3 weeks.

They’re perfect for a trip and NO racoon eyes 😀 or no need for any eye makeup 💄

Jennifer

Hi there! Great advice. Can you tell me about the earrings you are wearing. Thanks!

Thank you Jennifer! Which photo are you referring to?

Carrie

Alex you do not need makeup. You look fabulous.

Thank you! 🥰

Carrie

Alex you look fantastic and you dont need any makeup – you are pretty enough. do you have any other travel beauty tips?

Hi Carrie, that is so kind of you, thank you so much!!! ? Have a look at our ultimate guide to traveling with makeup here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/makeup/ Hope this helps! ?

Margaret D

Do you k ow of there is an electric toothbrush that is dual wattage so I can use it in the us and England? We are living in England temporarily and I was recommended to get one. Thank you for this informative website!

Hi Margaret, thank you for your comment, so pleased you find the blog informative! I brought this tooth brush whilst in England: https://amzn.to/2u8fyYw. Its a great toothbrush as it is more powerful and not overpriced charging me for lots of features which I don’t need. Also it has a great battery so I don’t have to pack the charger whilst travelling for short periods of time. Hope this helps! 🙂

10 Pro Tips for Traveling With Makeup

Experts share how to pack a beauty kit that covers all the bases.

travel makeup routine

Haley is a Wisconsin-based creative freelancer and recent graduate. She has worked as an editor, fact checker, and copywriter for various digital and print publications. Her most recent position was in academic publishing as a publicity and marketing assistant for the University of Wisconsin Press

Going on vacation is all fun and games until you get to the packing portion of the trip. At that point, it quickly becomes a game of “What can I bring?” and “What must I sadly leave behind?”

Traveling with makeup is particularly challenging, especially with TSA’s rules on liquid sizes and the propensity for your most prized products to break or leak. You’ve also got to think about things like climate variation and how your skin might react while also trying to keep your regimen somewhat normal so your skin doesn’t freak.

With practice and planning, though, you can get really good at editing down all your beauty essentials without over or under-packing. To help you cover all the bases when it comes to traveling with makeup, we asked experts to share their best tips.

RELATED: 15 Basic Makeup Essentials That Belong in Every Makeup Bag

Invest in a Great Makeup Case

First thing’s first: You’ve got to have a great place to store your beauty loot when traveling with makeup. Look for a bag that’s big enough to house all your essentials, is leak-proof, keeps you organized , and is easy to clean, advises Sydney Morgan , beauty guru and content creator. The Calpak Medium Clear Cosmetics Case ($85; Calpak ) is a great pick.

Put Makeup Brushes & Tools in Their Own Bag

Makeup brushes are an investment, so it only makes sense to look after them well. “I keep my tools in a dedicated case,” notes Jenny Patinkin , professional makeup artist and founder of Jenny Patinkin Eco-Luxe Beauty Tools . This helps protect the bristles and keeps things more sanitary, too. To save even more space, choose a makeup bag that has a compartment you can dedicate specifically to tools and brushes.

Keep a Few Items in Your Purse

Lost luggage happens every once in a while, so travel with confidence by having a cosmetic backup plan, says Brittany Lo , a professional makeup artist and founder of Beia. She says, “Always keep two to three essentials with you in your purse, just in case your luggage doesn’t make it or in case you need to reapply before you get the chance to unpack.” For example, a lightweight BB cream or foundation, cream blush, and mascara. When in doubt, identify your “desert island” essentials and pack those.

Opt For Multitasking Makeup

Saving space is a must when traveling with makeup, so take advantage of multitasking products. “I do like to steamline when I travel,” notes Patinkin. “[For example], Packing a bronzer that can double as contour, a buildable cheek color, and a buildable foundation for simple daytime application or more dramatic evening looks, one four-pan eyeshadow palette that can be used a lot of different ways, and keeping as few brushes with me as possible.”

Don’t Switch Up Your Routine Too Much

It’s tempting to pack all those tiny, travel products since they’re conveniently sized, but switching up your beauty routine too much isn’t ideal.

“Your body likes consistency,” notes Matthew Waitesmith, a professional makeup artist with Artis . “If you mostly maintain your same makeup routine while traveling, your body will be less likely to overreact to all the environmental changes involved with travel.” Not to mention, a chill vacation isn’t necessarily a great time to experiment with a tricky new felt liner or foundation formula. You want reliability and ease.

Decant Larger Items

Whether you’re checking a bag or sticking to a carry-on, it’s wise to consolidate your products to save space and minimize the potential for messes. If any of your liquid products are over 3.4 ounces—the TSA cutoff size—decant them in a travel-size container. Alternatively, buy the travel-sized versions of your faves, Lo suggests. When you run out of the travel-size product, you can refill the packaging with your full-size product.

Protect Delicate Makeup

The pain of seeing your favorite powder products broken is real. Avoid the distress by packing delicate items very well. You can do so with a fine bubble wrap (avoid anything too bulky). It also helps to “sandwich” your makeup bag, says Morgan.

“Put your makeup bag in the middle of your suitcase with clothes surrounding it,” she says. “This sounds super funny, but it is the best way to keep things from shifting around and breaking. I typically like to put it in the middle with clothes underneath and on all sides. This has helped to avoid breakage.” For liquid products, go the extra mile by placing them in a plastic bag and/or taping around the seal.

Consider the Climate

While you don’t want to completely switch up your makeup routine, do take the climate into account. For example, if you’re heading somewhere really humid or plan to splash around in the ocean, swap in some waterproof makeup. Or if it’s going to be dry or hot, pack a face mist that helps set your makeup and keep your skin looking dewy all day.

Bring A Couple “Special Occasion” Items

Along with your go-to makeup and skincare products, Waitesmith recommends packing a few makeup items that you associate with special occasions, such as a bold lipstick color or a pretty eyeshadow quad. He says, “You may want to be a bit more extravagant with your makeup colors or intensity to celebrate the special environment—like for a candlelight dinner.”

Pack a Compact Lighted Mirror

“The lighting in your hotel or other accommodation mirror is unfamiliar, so it can be hard to judge whether the color or texture of the product you're using feels like it's flattering,” notes Patinkin. She says that a lighted makeup mirror can help squash this issue real fast. Choose one that’s slender and stands up on its own or has suction cups that adhere to a flat surface mirror.

Your Ultimate Travel Makeup Routine & Travel Beauty Guide

Makeup for Traveling Guide

Maintaining a travel beauty routine requires a bit of planning, but for many of us, it’s important. You want to look your best in your photos, so a bit of travel makeup might be necessary, but you also don’t want to carry a massive bag that’ll weigh you down.

I have been to 12 different countries within the last 12 months, and I assure you I looked fabulous in every single one of them. The trick was learning to minimize my makeup routine for travel, and making sure I was using the most travel-friendly makeup products . In this guide I want to help you find the routine that will work for you, based on my own experience but also taking into account that each one of us has different preferences!

I even go through what I have in my travel beauty bag, so you can get an idea for the thought process behind packing your travel makeup. Then I’ll give some preparation tips, so you can get in the right mindset before you travel. I also included repackaging advice that will allow you to make your regular products that much more travel-friendly!

In this article:

How i do my travel makeup, travel makeup tips & tricks, how to repackage skincare and makeup for travel.

I give so many suggestions here, but I want to tell you a bit about what I actually do! Seeing where I was willing to compromise and why, versus where I decided to take what I love even if it’s not ideal might help you figure out what is important to you!

For me what was most important was having low-weight items that fit in a single bag since I travel with a backpack and only carry-on. I tend to stay in places for a long time, so when it comes to taking care of my skin I make sure to have my full skin care routine , with my cream, makeup-removing cleanser , hydrating night serum , sunscreen and anti-acne treatment in bottles that are 100 ml or less.

Everything I use is quite fluid, so bottles are best, and they also happen to be more hygienic than jars. I decided to leave my primers at home, since I don’t like layering too many things in the morning, and sunscreen is much more important to me than primer.

Travel Makeup Tips

When it comes to travel makeup, I prefer working with powders rather than creams. I have combination skin that can get quite oily, especially if I’m out and about exploring a new city, so creams tend to move around a lot while powders stay put. Those with dry skin might prefer an all-cream travel makeup routine instead!

I do carry with me a high-coverage foundation that doubles as my concealer , and a small stippling brush to apply it. While many people travel with a Beauty Blender in a mesh bag, I find myself worrying about packing it away when it’s still damp. I cannot travel without a setting powder , so I’ve decanted my favorite one into a smaller container, and I apply it with a kabuki brush that takes up almost no space.

I skip eyeshadows altogether. Instead, I have my contour powder , champagne highlighter , neutral blush all in one palette with a mirror, as well as a small brow powder duo perfect for doing ombre brows. The highlighter and blush are perfect inner corner and lid colors, while the bronzer and lighter brow powder are both awesome for the crease.

I use my darker brow powder for my brows, outer corner accent, and as eyeliner . For applying these I have a tiny blush brush, a fluffy angled brush for contouring, and a mini-sized set of eyeshadow brushes that includes a thin angled brush, a flat shadow brush, a rounded crease brush, and a blending brush.

I do have a black eyeliner pencil with me for when I want to get fancy, and a nice waterproof mascara . For the lips I have my go-to berry toned lip tint (which sometimes also goes on my cheeks), and an MLBB lip liner that I just couldn’t give up.

What Travel Makeup Products to Pack?

Learn Minimalism

Scaling back is 75% mindset. When you don’t travel often, it’s easy to see everything you own as absolutely essential. Of course, you need that palette! What if you’ll want to rock a red lip one night? Well, you gotta let go of those “what ifs” and start thinking more about whether every item you’re looking at is truly essential. This process can be painful, but once you’re in the air or on the road it’ll save you a lot of hassle.

Know the Airline Rules

Before you start packing make sure to review the airline requirements for toiletries, especially if you’re only flying with a carry-on. In most cases you’re not allowed to board an airplane with liquid cosmetic containers that hold over 100 ml of product, and you’re only allowed to carry items that fit in a single plastic bag.

Opt for Two-in-Ones

When you’re traveling, a makeup product that only has one purpose becomes very hard to justify carrying. Try to ignore the marketing and intended purposes, and open your mind to the possibilities. Look at your makeup products with a creative eye, and think how many uses you can get out of one item. A lipstick can double as a blush, concealer mixed with moisturizer can double as foundation, a contour and highlight kit can double as eyeshadow, an eyebrow powder can double as eyeliner.

Make Sure You Can Mix and Match

If you have a lipstick that only works with a specific outfit or a blush that only looks good when you wear a particular combination of eyeshadows, then leave it at home. You want to travel with things that all look good together; this applies to both makeup and clothes. Make sure each item you’ve brought will look good with every other item. It’s key to what we call a “capsule collection” and it will save you a ton of hassle.

Don’t Give up Your Favorites

While multi-purpose products are the best, it’s okay if you have some absolute Holy Grail items that can only be used for one thing. At the end of the day, you want to be happy with the makeup you’ve brought with you. As long as you actually use everything you carry, then it is justified.

Practice Your Minimalist Routine!

Before you actually decide what to take and what to leave behind, practice your minimalist face with the products you think you’ll take with you. It’d suck to assume that you’ll only need a few things, only to discover that you’re not happy with what you’ve brought once you’re actually away.

Square and Flat Packs Better

Circular compacts are tough to work with – they don’t fit nicely in a travel makeup bag or up against each other. Square compacts and thin tubes fit beautifully in a travel bag, and they are also much easier to put into Tetris-like order up against each other. This is why everything I recommended earlier comes either in a square compact or in a stick form!

Repacking your regular makeup for travel will save you the hassle of having to buy new things, and you might also be surprised to discover that it helps you stay organized when you’re home!

Travel Beauty Tips

Pressed Powders

Sticking all of your pressed powders in a single palette can be an excellent way of saving space! This can be especially useful if you are dedicated to a few eyeshadow or blush singles.

First, you’ll have to get your pressed powders out of their original compacts. You can do so by placing the compact over a source of low heat (a straightening iron is excellent for this) to get the glue to melt. Once it’s loosened up, pop out the pan with the pressed powder inside it.

Then you can stick magnet tape on the pan, and stick it into a magnetized Z Palette , or you can go for the complete DIY route by gluing the pan down into an old CD case.

Loose Powders

Loose powders are probably the least travel-friendly makeup products, but you can still make them work on the road. These little jars from Amazon are perfect for keeping loose powders safe and easy to use, and they help make you travel makeup bag less bulky.

For a short excursion, decanting your creams is guaranteed to save you lots of space. It’ll also allow you to bring your skincare and cream makeup in your carry-on without having to worry about liquid limits.

Heavier creams, foundations and balms can be decanted into jars , while lighter products like serums and toners can be poured into bottles . Make sure to use a small, clean spatula when taking products out of jar containers so that you can keep things clean and avoid contaminating your creams with bacteria.

By the way, contact lens cases are also awesome containers for when you’re only going away for a couple of nights!

Reinforcement

Finding ways to cushion more fragile items is very important if you have a lot of pressed powder products in your travel makeup bag. I find a small piece of tissue or silicone netting indispensable for cushioning the pressed powders in my various palettes and compacts.

travel makeup routine

Whether you’re carry-on for life or have zero shame about checking a bag, traveling means making some tough beauty cuts. Be it for TSA requirements, limited real estate, or the pursuit of a more simplified routine, everyday beauty staples aren’t always practical for on-the-go use. (My favorite foundation, for example, is tragically packaged in a delicate glass bottle.) In lieu of our day-to-day favorites, Byrdie editors opt for multipurpose products, stick formulas, and luxurious hydrators when we’re traveling for work or pleasure. Discover our favorites ahead, from multiuse sticks to acne-fighting mists.

There's nothing like getting off a plane and beelining for the bathroom to give your skin a good, deep clean. Airplane air really makes my skin so, so sad. Sturm's Enzyme Cleanser is my must-have for travel because it allows for a little grit and gentle exfoliation when my face needs it most. When mixed with water, the fine-powder transforms into a super soft, enzyme-filled foam (there's some vitamin C in there too). It sloughs off dead and dry skin, free radicals like pollution and other grime from the travel day, and leaves your skin feeling incredibly soft, fresh, and reset. I focus a massage along my nose and chin (where I have the most congestion) and it's a godsend on blackheads.

When I travel, I need a good silk scrunchie. It's an easy, cute way to slick back wet hair when I don't have much time to get ready, it allows me to (secretly mask all day), and it keeps my hair out of my face as I'm getting dressed and applying makeup. Overall, it's both incredibly practical and beautiful in equal measure. This one from Ceremonia is my absolute favorite (the silk scrunchie comes in a set with an organza option as well, which I love for added fanciness). It's the biggest, the most luscious, and really makes me look like I have my life together.

I am absolutely in love with this product. To put it into context, the formula went viral on TikTok before it even launched. This is a true skincare-makeup hybrid. Upon first application, my skin looked warm and sculpted . I use it to contour and lift (along my cheekbones and jaw bone) and then apply to the eyes for depth. It's a beautiful, bronze-y formula and also includes centella asiatica (my favorite for its soothing properties), niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid.

It can be difficult for me to doze off on plane rides, so I make sure to save these Self-Heating Warm Compresses for every flight. I got introduced to them because they soothed my eyes and sensitivity to light when I had a migraine. But now, migraine or not, bringing them with me on plane rides is a total game changer. The compress is more of an eye mask that comfortably goes over your ears and stays in place during a nap. They also heat up quickly and stay warm for around 30 minutes, which is more than enough time for me to be lulled to sleep.

If there’s only time to do one minute of makeup before boarding a flight, I’m grabbing this brow gel. Espressoh’s Hey Broh gel makes me feel put together with a few swipes. I’ve loved this brow gel for years to help me achieve a bold laminated effect, but it works just as well to slick my brows into place and keep them there for a natural yet polished look.

I have a ton of hair, and when I’m traveling, all I want to do is put it up. I’ve been reliant on these Large Slipsilk Scrunchies for years and I use them at least once a day no matter what. They are large enough that I can wrap the scrunchie around my hair twice but elastic enough that they’ll hold my hair in place with just one loop. Besides wearing my hair in an updo, I love using them to pineapple my hair at night under my bonnet to ensure my curls don’t get frizzy. Most importantly, opting for a scrunchie that doesn’t get caught on my curly 3C/4A hair or crease it has really decreased the amount of breakage and shedding I see.

Brow products are something I use every single day. My routine typically consists of some kind of pigment product topped with a clear wax to hold my brows into a brushed-up position. But when I’m traveling, I love to go for the two-in-one with this new Benefit gel. It gives you all the pigment of a tinted brow gel, plus the sculpting, stay-all-day power of a gel or wax. It’s a nonnegotiable in my dopp kit.

I’m a terrible sleeper as is, so throw a plane ride, road trip, or time change into the mix, and my under-eyes are shot. So naturally, I never travel without eye gels. And while I love a heavily saturated, jelly-textured patch for my day-to-day, these SkinMedica gels are perfect for travel. They come individually wrapped with one set of patches per sachet, so there’s no dealing with heavy jars or tins. They’re also incredibly moisturizing without being soaking wet—you can easily use them on a plane or long car ride without dripping serum all over the place. That, and they actually adhere to your skin until you’re ready to remove them.

I’m nothing if not practical, so I’m never without this Vaseline stick on a trip. My skin gets extremely dry on flights , and I’ll use this handy stick for slugging pretty much anywhere—cuticles, under-eyes, mouth corners, you name it. I also use it as a lip balm, to slick back my hair, and as a body highlighter on my shoulders and collarbone. (It also comes in handy if you find a blister forming on your skin.) There are truly endless uses for Vaseline , and the stick design makes it easier to keep skin balanced and glowy while traveling.

Topicals Slick Salve Glossy Lip Balm ($16): Topicals’ latest launch—the Slick Salve Glossy Lip Balm—has quickly become a beauty essential that goes everywhere with me. The minty lip treatment is infused with peptides and a tri-ceramide complex that combats fine lines, texture, and dryness. When I swipe this on, my lips feel incredibly soothed and moisturized. Not to mention that they’re left with a high-shine, glossy finish.

Biossance Squalane + Ectoin Overnight Rescue ($68): Since I have dry skin, I incorporate intensely nourishing moisturizers into my morning and evening routines. Right now, the Biossance Squalane + Ectoin Overnight Rescue Deep Repair Treatment is the nighttime cream that’s always stashed in my dopp kit. The ultra-rich cream is formulated with ectoin to protect your skin from environmental aggressors, restoring magnesium and peptides, and hydrating squalane. After slathering this on at night, I wake up with skin that is noticeably plumper and more moisturized.

When traveling, I always want to bring products that make removing makeup and refreshing my skin a breeze. That’s why the mini version of Garnier’s SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water is a staple in my toiletry bag. When I’m ready to wash my face, I saturate one of my SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Eco Pads ($12) and gently wipe it across my face, eyes, and lips. The beloved no-rinse micellar water effortlessly breaks down and removes all my makeup without leaving my skin feeling stripped.

I am a blush fiend and usually bring at least three options when I travel (even if it’s just overnight). That being said, this is always one of them. First of all, it’s a no-brainer for packing since it’s so tiny and can easily be applied without a brush. It’s the perfect peachy-pink shade that I can build up as much as I want, and the glowy formula glides on without feeling heavy or greasy. I always keep it in my shoulder bag during a flight since it’s the perfect pick-me-up after travel even if I’m not wearing any other makeup.

I’m very unfussy with my hair and will happily use whatever shampoo and conditioner the hotel has on hand. This, however, is the one thing I can’t go without. A pump or two on wet or dry hair is all I need for smooth, frizz-free hair that looks and smells incredible. Most importantly, it helps coax my nearly wavy hair into a passable mermaid texture that eliminates the need for any other styling.

Good complexion products top my packing list, and I haven’t stopped using this concealer since I tested it a few months ago. It’s so creamy and truly foolproof to apply, and the satiny finish looks beautiful on both under-eyes and pimples. It can also be used as a foundation in a pinch, which is great if you’re an overpacker like I am. This is another one I keep on hand as a quick refresh after a flight.

Eden Stuart, beauty editor

I hate fussing with lots of tools and brushes when I travel, so whenever possible, I only bring one: a beauty sponge. That means sticking to makeup products that blend well with a sponge or fingers. For that reason, I usually travel with a few of the Nudies Cream Blushes from Nudestix ($35)—they come with a little brush but blend well with your fingertips too.

On that no-tools, no-problems note, I’ve been sticking to Ciele Cosmetics’ Tint & Protect SPF 50+ ($44) as my on-the-go base. It’s another product that blends effortlessly, and a little bit goes a long way for coverage. I usually just blend out a few drops with my fingers, and then go over it with a damp sponge to even things out. I also love that it contains SPF 50+; I am a firm believer in never relying on makeup alone for sunscreen, so I do apply some underneath, but as far as I’m concerned, you can never have too much protection.

I can’t possibly discuss my travel routine without shouting out Eadem’s Milk Marvel ($68) . Since it contains vitamin C and niacinamide, it really streamlines my skincare routine; it’s usually the only product I’ll apply between my face wash and sunscreen when I’m out of town. I brought the brand’s Bare-Skin Confidence Mini Travel Set ($45) home for the holidays and am so happy I did; the moisturizer is lightweight and silky, and the cleansing balm is great for days when I went for lighter-coverage makeup or just SPF.

Abby Dupes, associate editor

Growing up, it didn’t matter where we stayed or went—I only wanted to know if the hotel had a pool or an ocean nearby. The urge to swim has yet to leave me, meaning my hair ends up a tangled mess by dinnertime on most trips. Ouais Leave In Conditioner has saved me multiple times, helping me tackle the toughest knots pre-shower and protecting my hair from heat post-wash. If I don’t have time for heat styling, I’ll use it to slick back my hair into a flyaway-free low bun. It’s truly the most versatile hair product in my bag.

I swear my skin knows where we are the second I arrive at an airport. Before we even hit the tarmac, I’m battling to keep my skin moisturized, but my lips are the worst offender by far. Since dry, chapped lips are not on the itinerary, I use Ilia’s Lip Wrap Reviving Balm. Formulated with hyaluronic acid and salicornia (aka sea succulent), this lightweight balm restores the skin barrier of your lips over time while imparting a gorgeous, plump shine with just one swipe. Plus, for those with flight anxiety like me, the soothing lavender and chamomile scent provides a bonus dose of calming aromatherapy.

There’s nothing worse than arriving at your destination only to find that the makeup bag you thought you had packed perfectly has eye shadow all over, thanks to a broken powder eye shadow palette. Trust and believe that cream or liquid is the best formulation to bring abroad. I specifically love Rare Beauty’s All of the Above Weightless Eyeshadow Stick, as it’s buildable, blendable, and fadeproof. The shimmery, neutral shades are perfect for every aesthetic, and I love the fact that the packaging has a built-in sharpener.

Jasmine Phillips, social media editor

Edge control is truly the first product I always throw in my carry-on luggage. It keeps my edges laid and tames any flyaways I may have with slick-back styles. I particularly love this product because it can withstand all heat and humidity so I know my edges are laid while I lay on the beach. I don’t have to worry about any white residue or weird stickiness. It’s just a great-smelling product that I keep near and dear at all times.

Tower 28 SOS Rescue Spray is a skin saver at home, so I’m sure to pack it when I’m out of town. It keeps any redness or irritation at bay so my skin can look and feel its best. It’s super refreshing and hydrating, which is perfect after long days of exploring.

I love a two-in-one product just as much as I love anything from Ami Colé. The Lip + Blush Sticks add a nice wash of color to my skin and help me limit the amount of beauty products I need to get my desired look. It contains desert date oil, hibiscus flower extract, and baobab seed oil to hydrate and nurture the skin, so it’s a win-win.

Ali Webb, associate editor

As we all know, airport restrictions on liquids mean that packing a carry-on requires making some hard choices. A good powder makeup product can really change the game, and I’m obsessed with this Charlotte Tilbury palette ($75), which includes two types of highlighters, a bronzer, and a blush all in one place. A few swipes on strategic areas like your cheekbones, Cupid’s bow, and inner corners of your eyes will have you glowing and contoured in no time, and I love how this allows me to keep having fun with makeup without sacrificing valuable liquid real estate.

No matter what beauty products you choose to pack for a trip, sunscreen is an absolute must. I’ve tried my fair share of formulas, and my absolute favorite is Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen ($38), which goes on smooth and nongreasy with no white cast, features SPF 40 protection, and creates an ideal base for makeup (so you can leave the primer at home). I usually stock up on the largest size, but the mini is perfect for travel.

At any given time, I have two bottles of Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer ($15): a full size, plus a mini to take with me on all my travels. I've found it to be an ideal hair product to pack because it serves so many purposes: It works as a heat protectant, makes my strands take to styling better, and includes a nourishing six-oil blend that can take the place of other leave-in products when I’m keeping it simple on the go. It’s color-safe and has smoothing properties, plus its UV protection will keep your strands happy and healthy if you’re headed somewhere sunny or spending time outside. This is truly my desert-island hair product.

This Clean Beauty Brand Simplified My Travel Makeup Routine

Makeup can be intimidating, especially for beginners. Factor in the cost of dozens of products and the time it takes to put on a full face of makeup and it’s easy to understand why some people—especially travelers—prefer to skip it altogether. For people like me who can't be bothered with a complicated makeup routine but want to look good anyway, though, there’s an answer. And it won’t take up much room in your suitcase .

Clean beauty company Ilia's lineup of products seem made for travelers packing light . Its makeup is designed with skincare in mind, without parabens, artificial fragrances, formaldehyde, oxybenzone, or other toxic ingredients that are harmful to your skin (and the environment). With just a few pieces of Ilia makeup, you can put together a routine that’s quick and natural-looking—the kind you can wear from day to night once we’re on the road again.

One of Ilia's most popular products, the Super Serum Skin Tint , is one of those cosmetics that you never want to run out of. It’s essentially a three-in-one beauty product that combines foundation, hydrating serum, and SPF 40 (made with reef-safe zinc oxide), all in an airplane-friendly one-ounce bottle. A wide range of shades makes it easy to find the color that’s right for you; the website's shade matching tool helps, too—upload a photo of yourself and the brand will recommend the best tint. The serum is made with ingredients like squalane and hyaluronic acid to keep skin moisturized and glowing, while niacinamide means that those with sensitive or acne-prone skin don’t need to worry about breakouts (even if you occasionally forget to take it off before bed).

Ilia, Super Serum Tint

Ilia’s Color Haze , another multi-use product worth a spot in your Dopp kit , comes in a handy squeeze tube and works as both a lip tint and a cream blush. If you’re feeling bold, you can also use the tint on your eyelids. (Though if you're specifically looking for an eyeshadow, there’s a product for that , too.)

No look is complete without mascara, and Ilia created one that amplifies lashes without leaving little black flecks all over your face. Plus, it comes in a handy travel size that’s just 0.1 ounces—about half the size of a regular mascara wand.

For plane rides, there are two key products that will save dried-out skin: Ilia’s Lip Wrap Hydrating Mask , a clear emollient lip balm, and the Blue Light Mist , a refreshing spray that provides soothing hydration. (Both of which, like most Ilia products, can be recycled once you’ve finished them via the brand’s Zero Waste Box program .)

Dry airplane air, varying temperatures, and new foods can all affect your skin—and adding makeup to the mix can wreak havoc. But makeup feels accessible and easy for me with Ilia's multi-use beauty products , and more like an extension of my skincare routine. Before I started using Ilia, I pretty much only wore makeup on special occasions. Now I wear it almost every day—even while traveling.

How do I pick the best makeup bag for travel?

hearst owned

Finding a makeup bag that fulfills your long list of needs can be done. When on the hunt, prioritize space. If it can’t fit all of our products then what’s the point? It’s best to look for a bag that caters to your specific makeup and preferences. Bigger full-sized items can be easily thrown in a spacious bag, whereas smaller items such as lipsticks, liners, individual shadows, etc. beg for a bag with pockets and dividers as opposed to a catch-all. At the end of the day, a makeup bag should keep you organized, happy, and sane!

What’s the best makeup bag material?

hearst owned

Anything water resistant! Most makeup bags are lined with water-resistant or waterproof materials such as clear plastic, nylon, or polyester.

How should I clean my makeup bag?

hearst owned

Beauty lovers know the danger of a loose cap. Though spills may be unavoidable, cleaning them up is something we all must learn to master. Turns out the secret is not so secret: antibacterial household spray! Any Clorox, Microband, or Cleansmart spray, etc. will do the trick. Tip: Make sure to bring makeup pads on every expedition, in case a spill decides to attempt destruction. Shop our favorite antibacterial reusable cotton rounds here .

How should I organize my makeup bag for travel?

hearst owned

When organizing your makeup for a trip, there are a few important things to keep in mind:

  • Try to leave full-sized products at home. If it's a short enough trip, go for the minis.
  • If you can, pick the combined products (for example: A bronzer + blush compact rather than bringing both bronzer and blush).
  • Check the amount of product you have left before packing. Arriving at your destination with only a drop left isn’t doing anyone any good!
  • If you don’t have mini versions of your fav moisturizers, primers, setting spray, shampoo, or conditioner, don’t fret. You can find travel-sized bottles here , which can save you from a last minute trip to the drug store! Plus, they’re TSA approved.
  • When packing, it’s helpful to do your full routine start-to-finish and place each beauty item in your makeup bag, and nothing else. This way, you can avoid the unnecessary-yet-tempting products!

Simplifying Your Makeup and Skincare Routine For Travel

Disclaimer: This post might contain affiliate links, which means we get a small commission if you make a purchase (at no extra cost to you).

When preparing for your next trip , packing is probably the biggest and most daunting task. A lot of travel blogs about packing will tell you to leave your makeup and beauty essentials at home if you want to save space in your luggage. Or they say, if you bring all of your makeup, you’ll only wear it once because you won’t have time for your usual routine. But, it’s completely possible to simplify your beauty and skincare routine for travel! This guide will help you pick what beauty products to pack for your next trip !

So, here’s my list of beauty essentials and tips for traveling.

Makeup and Skincare Routine for Travel

Think about what makeup and beauty products you use every day.

Which products do you use on a regular basis? For some, this can be a long list (like me). But instead of bringing every single one, bring the ones you can’t go without.

I want to preface this post by saying that travel is a great opportunity to embrace your natural skin too! If you want to say screw the makeup and go all-natural for your travels, go for it! Who knows, maybe your skin will love it and you’ll feel amazing without it!

Pack One Makeup Bag

Before you start grabbing makeup to pack, have one makeup bag picked out that you’re going to bring. If it doesn’t fit in the bag, don’t pack it. And don’t keep picking a bigger bag to make everything fit! Resist the urge girl, you can do it. We love the Vera Bradly makeup bags because they’re lined and can fit a lot of stuff while being fashionable.

How to Pack Your Skincare and Makeup

When packing your skincare and makeup, it’s really important that you pack in properly so it doesn’t make a mess in your bag. If you’re packing in a carry-on , you’ll have to make sure that all of your products are TSA ready. Have them visible in some way (ie not in an opaque bag), we really like these that are plastic and see-through. Also, check the volumes of your products so they aren’t over the volume limit! If they are, consider buying travel-sized products, or dispense your products into other plastic bottles like these.  We like these options because they are reusable plastic containers instead of single-use!

If you’re not packing in a carry-on, you won’t have to worry about the sizes of your products, but you’ll still have to make sure they don’t leak everywhere!

When you’re touring and doing activities all day while traveling, you might want to pack some beauty products in your day bag .

Don’t Pack it!

Here’s a list of things right off the bat you shouldn’t bother packing for travel:

  • Bronzer/highlighter
  • Color corrector
  • Setting spray

I made this list thinking about the things that I don’t use regularly when I’m at home. If I don’t use it at home, I won’t use it while traveling! These are things that can be easily omitted from a routine without ruining your look unless you’re planning on doing full glam every day!

BB Cream vs. Foundation

This is a judgment call on your part. If you struggle with acne, redness, discoloration,  bring your foundation for more coverage. But if you’re fine with natural, light coverage, invest in or bring a BB cream. BB creams are great because they provide light coverage, sunscreen, color correction over time, and moisture to your skin. Instead of bringing your entire bottle of foundation, get a small reusable lotion jar and add a small amount. I like to travel with my BB cream and concealer because it provides the coverage I need without needing setting powders and foundation. I personally love the Maybelline BB Cream and it’s very affordable!

With my lovely dark circles, my concealer cannot be left at home. But I skip the color corrector. If you don’t have redness or discoloration, you can get away with not packing the concealer. This is a simplified routine ladies. My favorite concealer is the Tarte Marajuca Creaseless Concealer.

Beauty Blenders and Tools

As someone with a lot of makeup tools, it is hard to pick which ones were worth bringing. If I could only bring one tool, it would be a beauty blender or sponge. I can use it for applying foundation, concealer, BB cream, and powders. And if I lose it, it’s not a big loss, especially since I buy the cheaper, off-brand blenders.

Single Eye Shadows

If you know you’ll be going out or visiting somewhere formal, it’s worth bringing a small eyeshadow palette or a few single shadows. Bring shadows that are versatile, like nudes and earth tones. This way you have colors that can match any outfit and that can be taken from day to night. If you’re bringing shadow, only bring one brush. I like my blending brush or crease brush because it can be used for a versatile application.

Mascara or Eyeliner

If I could only pick either mascara or eyeliner, I would pick mascara. The few times I traveled I brought eyeliner and never used it, so pick either one or the other to pack!

This depends on your natural brows. I can go without filling my brows in, but I can’t go without tweezers. Pick a brow product like the Elf Cosmetics two in one brow tool, where you have the spoolie brush and stick in one tool. And it takes up no space!

I personally don’t bring lipstick , instead, I bring a tinted chapstick. With a tinted chapstick, I get a bit of color and the moisture I need. Let’s be real, having chapped lips is the worst so don’t forget packing some!

It might sound like you’ll be packing a lot, but this guide covers the basics without any, “Oh I wish I brought that” moments. The big take away of this guide is to minimize what you use daily and converting your usual routine into a condensed one. Who knows, you might like the minimal approach better!

Moisturizers and Face Wash

Don’t skip bringing your moisturizers. During travel, your skin is going to be experiencing different environments and weather. Your skin will definitely need them after flying on a plane. I personally love the First Aid Beauty or Belif face washes and moisturizers.

Other Products to Pack

If you’re ok with hotel shampoo, conditioner, and lotion, you won’t have to worry about packing those beauty products. Again, remember to pack them right! For us, we can’t leave for a trip without a nail kit because it seems like we always need one when we don’t have it!

  • Body Washes
  • Shampoo and Conditioner

Nasreen Stump

You may have your beauty routine perfected. You’ve found your favorite products, you’re brand loyal and you know what works. Heading on a trip though? That can change everything. Beauty products may only be optimal for specific climates. We’re here to run you through the very best travel makeup products to add to your makeup collection. And of course we’ll share travel size options that are TSA-friendly.

If you’ve ever stood in the beauty aisle at a major drugstore you know how overwhelming all of the choices can be. We’ve rounded up the ones that work well for travel, have great ratings and that we buy again and again. Most of these items can be found on Amazon. Don’t forget to put together multiple makeup items in one order and click Subscribe and Save for sizable discounts!

1. e.l.f. Holy Hydration! Skin Daily Moisturizer

E.l.f. is a fantastic easily accessible brand that can be found in most drugstores. When you’re traveling, especially by air, your skin can suffer. It’s super important to practice good skincare and lock in extra moisture whenever possible.

Why e.l.f. Holy Hydrations! is the Best Travel Moisturizer

  • TSA-friendly 2.6 oz size (larger ones are available if traveling by car)
  • Very lightweight and perfect for your nighttime routine
  • Aloe vera and jojoba ingredients are soothing to dry or sunburnt skin
  • Great for sensitive skin

2. RunnerUp: CeraVe Ultralight Moisturizing Lotion with Sunscreen

If you’ve got sensitive skin or want to make sure you’re getting SPF on your face when you moisturize, CeraVe is a fantastic choice. This gentle formula is the perfect beauty essential to pack in your travel makeup bag.

Why CeraVe Ultralight with Sunscreen is a Must-Have Moisturizer

  • SPF 30 protects your face from UVA and UVB rays
  • Paraben-free, fragrance-free and noncomedogenic formula
  • Not greasy and won’t leave a white residue
  • Moisturizes and contains ceramides to promote continued hydration of the skin

3. Neutrogena Hydro Boost Primer and Serum

Have you ever spontaneously bought a new primer or foundation and then been disappointed when you used them? Maybe they seemed to react to each other? I know I’ve had this happen. That’s because primers and foundations need to be matched. The ingredients in some gel-based foundations and mattifying formulas may flake on top of certain smoothing primers. Always test your picks together before packing your cosmetic bag for a trip.

Primer can lay down a great base for the best looking makeup however make sure you’re matching your primer to the climate as well. Using a putty-type or gripping primer in a hot destination can cause it to settle into pores and imperfections giving your skin the texture of an orange peel (yuck). We’ll give out two Bests in this category – one for hot climates and one for chillier vacays.

Why Neutrogena Hydro Boost is the Best Primer for Cold Weather

  • Pulls double duty as a primer and a serum, saving room in your makeup bag
  • Dropper with vial top seals tightly to prevent spills in transit
  • Contains hyaluronic acid which moisturizes and gives a light glow
  • Perfect for under makeup or on days you want to look healthy, dewy and fresh without makeup

4. e.l.f. Tone Adjusting Primer

This product glides on so smoothly and feels so luxurious that you would never guess that it’s a $10 bargain buy. It’s ideal for neutralizing redness and masking skin imperfections. When visiting a humid climate it’s pretty common to have minor skin flair ups or redness. The green tones will make you picture perfect despite what the sun is attempting to do to you!

Why e.l.f. Tone Adjusting Primer is the Best Primer for Hot Climates

  • Good for both dry and oily skin
  • Can be used as a base with no makeup on top just to even redness
  • A little goes a long way! One pump is enough.
  • e.l.f. as a brand has a fair trade certified factory, produces vegan products and is certified cruelty-free
  • Slightly smaller travel size is available but we love that the larger size is also under 3.4 oz

5. Bonus: Too Faced Shadow Insurance Primer

While you don’t need an eyelid primer, it is a good idea if you’ll be wearing eye shadow. This primer is the superglue of the makeup world. It essentially coats your eyelid so that shadow sticks to it and doesn’t move. Looking for a version with no shimmer? This Too Faced option  has a natural finish but is applied with a wand.

Why Too Faced Shadow Insurance Eye Shadow Primer is the Best Primer for Times You Might Cry

  • Locks down your eye shadow – trust me it isn’t going anywhere
  • A must if your plans include shimmery eyeshadow- you don’t want glitter in your eyeball
  • Expecting a proposal? Heading to a big emotional event? Or going to be in the cold with watery eyes? This one step will save your eye makeup appearance in photos.
  • Don’t want to do full eye makeup? Use a bit by itself, it will give lids a neutral shimmer
  • Fantastic for mature or oily skin to keep shadows from settling into creases in an obvious way

6. Ecotools Retractable Makeup Brush  and Eye Enhancing Set

When traveling there are two “categories” of makeup brushes that I bring with me. I take a shadow brush and angled brush to do eye shadow and liner. I also carry a large fluffy brush for powder and blush. Over the years I’ve discovered that finding the perfect travel version of each in the same set is not likely. Finding the best one individually though? Easy. These brushes work well with a huge variety of makeup. Just be sure to clean them both regularly.

Why These Two Ecotools are the Perfect Travel Makeup Brush Combo

  • Soft cruelty-free bristles on the retractable makeup brush
  • Retractable bristles with a cover ensure that the brush stays intact and clean during travel
  • Eye enhancing set comes with two brushes that are perfect for lining and shadow
  • Having two lets you bring one and save one as a backup for later
  • Bristles stay in place and don’t shed on all brushes

7. RunnerUp: 4-in-1 Physicians Formula Makeup Brush

If you want one brush that does it all the 4-in-1 Physicians Formula Makeup Brush is a great pick. Personally, I like having a full handle to hold onto but this brush is one I’ll occasionally make an exception for when space is tight.

Why Physicians Formula 4-in-1 Makeup Brush is our RunnerUp

  • The softest synthetic bristles ever that won’t fall out
  • Easy screw-on, screw-off sections last longer than ones that snap on and off
  • Great price point
  • Brushes don’t have covers so grab a  silicone container  to carry it in, especially if it will be in your purse

8. Catrice HD Liquid Coverage Foundation

Surely I’m not the only one who seeks out makeup produced in countries with more stringent regulations than the US? This Italian-made liquid foundation adheres to EU cosmetic regulations, ensuring that more than 1,500 banned ingredients aren’t utilized. By contrast, the US only bans 11 ingredients!

Why Catrice HD Liquid Coverage is A Favorite for Travel

  • Vial and dropper screws on tight preventing leaking during adventures
  • Long-lasting with a finish that’s matte but looks airbrushed
  • Since you only need a few drops the container lasts a long time
  • 23 colors available

9. Laura Geller Baked Balance-n-Brighten Powder Foundation

Powder foundation can be a great option for travel. You don’t have to fit it into your liquids bag if you aren’t checking luggage and you don’t need to worry about the item oozing out after air pressure impacts it. This pigmented mineral-based powder allows you to build to the level of coverage that you desire.

Why Laura Geller Baked Balance-n-Brighten is Our RunnerUp Foundation

  • Apply with different brushes to get different coverage levels ( kabuki for light,  dense  for more coverage)
  • Light, silky feel for a no-makeup makeup look
  • Runs a bit darker in almost every shade we’ve seen so order a shade lighter than your normal foundation
  • Fantastic for people who don’t want to pack concealer and are looking for a color balancing foundation

Makeup Tip:  Compacts can be messy if they get banged around during travel breaking the powder. Put a  foam applicator  (or several cotton rounds ) between the cover and the powder to fill the space and prevent breakage. You can also put them into small squeeze purses to protect them more. We love  these ones , which are also great for earbuds and jewelry.

10. Mally Beauty Plush Pen Brightening Concealer Stick

Concealer is one of those makeup items that either makes or breaks your look. There are so many cheap concealers out there that actually impact your final look negatively! If you’re going to use concealer spend a little more for a quality formula. It will pay off in the long run.

Why Mally Beauty Brightening Concealer Stick is the Best Travel Concealer

  • Sponge-like applicator tip won’t tug on delicate under eye area like a wand applicator
  • Ideal for those with olive, yellow or warm undertones
  • Perfect travel size
  • Amazing at concealing under eye circles and giving you an awake look, even when you’re not

11. RunnerUp: Tarte Creaseless Undereye Concealer

If your skin tone veers closer to neutral or cool, the Tarte Creaseless Undereye Concealer is a better choice. The formula changed in the last couple of years and is thicker. You don’t need much but I’d recommend dabbing it on your finger to swipe on versus using the applicator.

Why Tarte Creaseless Undereye Concealer is Also a Favorite

  • Heavy coverage for problematic undereye circles
  • Formula creates a dewy appearance giving a youthful and refreshed look
  • Lasts a surprisingly long time because you need so little

12. Rimmel London Natural Bronzer

Looking for a sun-kissed head start? Rimmel London’s Natural Bronzer is a great, affordable bronzer to have on standby.

Why Rimmel London Natural Bronzer is our Favorite

  • Natural-looking shades that work for most skin tones

13. Han Skincare 3-in-1 Multistick

This product can pull triple duty in your travel makeup kit as blush, lip color and eye color. Sticks are a great option for blush because they’re easy to pack.

Why Han Skincare 3-in-1 Multistick is the Best Blush for Travel

  • 8 shades available
  • Darker shades can also be used for contouring
  • Cruelty-free, vegan and made in the USA
  • Smooth texture
  • Lasts for a long time – a little goes a long way

14. RunnerUp: Covergirl Instant Cheekbones Contouring Blush Palette

If you’re looking for options or contouring from your blush, this Covergirl palette is a great choice. Pair it with one of our makeup brush recommendations.

Why Covergirl Instant Cheekbones is our RunnerUp Blush

  • Dermatologist tested to be safe for sensitive skin
  • Blendable formula
  • 3 complementary shades

15. L’Oreal Paris Lash Paradise Mascara

Years ago I was told I had long lashes and “wasn’t I lucky that I’d never have to worry about mascara!” Well, I didn’t wear mascara until my late 20s and that’s when I learned that mascara isn’t all about long lashes. It’s about looking awake! Mascara has been in my makeup bag ever since so that I look like I’m bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. The best mascaras provide a lift and definition to your eyes without clumpy, raccoon-like side effects.

Why Lash Paradise by L’Oreal Paris is the Best Travel Mascara

  • Doesn’t flake or clump
  • Washable formulas are great for travel so you don’t have to pack heavy-duty cleansers
  • Water fun on the list? Pick a waterproof option of Lash Paradise.
  • Goes on incredibly smoothly and doesn’t require extra brushing or fussing

16. RunnerUp: e.l.f. Clear Brow and Lash Mascara

If you’re headed to an off-the-beaten-path destination or a super-humid destination sometimes mascara is more work than it’s worth. Humidity and sweat combine to make mascara fight to stay in place. Don’t have black smudged eyes in photos. When you want to look put together but not worry about looking like a bandit in photos, turn to clear mascara.

Why We Love e.l.f. Clear Brow and Lash Mascara

  • Clear formula defines eyelashes but doesn’t smudge
  • 2-sided wand allows you to also have brow gel available
  • 100% cruelty-free and vegan
  • Super affordable price point

17. L’Oreal Paris Infallible Grip Precision Felt Eyeliner

When it comes to eyeliner, you want a product that’s easy to use, hard to smudge and that lasts. This L’Oreal Paris eyeliner checks all of those boxes. It might be just me but if I’m going to lose or ruin a product on a getaway, it’s eyeliner. The price point on this one makes it a good pick to keep several colors (or backups) on hand.

Why L’Oreal Infallible Grip Precision Felt is the Best Eyeliner

  • 4 Star and above rating by 92% of purchasers
  • Waterproof formula
  • Pointy felt tip gives you a precise application
  • Comes in black, brown, grey, green and blue
  • Good for sensitive eyes/skin

18. RunnerUp: Covergirl Perfect Point Plus Eyeliner

In travel, anything that saves space or eliminates another item is a win for us. Covergirl has been around forever. For many of us, it might even be the first brand we ever used. Their Perfect Point Plus eyeliner comes with a smudge stick on one end for those smoky eye looks on the go!

Why We Also Love Covergirl Perfect Point Plus Eyeliner

  • Self-sharpening design eliminates the need to pack an eyeliner pencil sharpener
  • Five color options
  • Blendable formula can create both precise and smoky looks
  • Super easy to apply

19. Revlon Illuminance Creme Eye Shadow Palette

Eye shadow is always one of the trickier travel makeup items, especially if you’re a traveler who loves variety. If you’ve got eye shadow palettes at home where you use only one or two colors, the space they take up can seem like a waste. In addition, the makeup cases on traditional palettes can bust open and leave a mess. Cream eye shadow can be a great choice for travel!

Why We Love Revlon Illuminance Creme Eye Shadow

  • Pocket-sized and easy to pack
  • Ophthalmologist-tested and good for sensitive eyes and skin
  • Eight great color options including shimmer, neutral and bold
  • Buildable pigmented shades- just add more layers for more saturated results
  • All palettes contain a mirror

20. RunnerUp:  Sephora Golden Hour Eye Shadow Palette

Sephora palettes can be a great travel option. They’re constantly putting out new color options and themed palettes. One of the other great things is that they aren’t hard plastics they’re less prone to shatter and leave you with a powdery mess. You can pop them into a ziplock bag for safekeeping.

Why We Love Sephora Eye Shadow Palettes

  • Great mix of matte, shimmer and metallic shadows in one palette
  • Perfect size for travel
  • 6 shades to choose from
  • Palette slides in and out of heavy cardboard case

21. Rimmel Stay Glossy Lip Gloss

As a huge fan of lip gloss, I’ve tried hundreds over the years. While I prefer a tube of lip oil in my daily life, they aren’t ideal for travel. Tubes pressurize on flights and when you open them they start uncontrollably oozing. It’s not a headache you want to deal with. Wanded lip glosses are great for travel and this Rimmel one is the best of the bunch.

Why Rimmel Stay Glossy is the Best Travel Lip Gloss

  • Wide range of color choices that look good on many skin tones
  • Stays on for 6 hours with no touch-ups
  • The wet look is great for when you want to give the impression that you did your makeup without wearing a full face
  • When choosing a color, assume it’s slightly lighter than pictured

22. NYX Professional Butter Gloss in Sugar Glass

If you’re looking for the perfect clear gloss this is it! Most of us have used NYX for years. With its affordable price point, you can keep one in every cosmetic case and makeup bag you have so you’re always ready for your next trip.

Why NYX Professional Butter Gloss is the Best Clear Lip Gloss

  • Smooth formula that isn’t sticky
  • Cruelty-free company
  • Super light scent and no harsh taste if you accidentally lick your lips
  • Sheer colors are also available

23. Aquaphor Lip Repair Lip Balm

Yes, we’ve got lip gloss and lip balm on the packing list! Did you know your lips can sunburn? Whether you’re in a hot climate or a cold one, sore lips are never fun on a vacation! We swear by Aquaphor for quick relief.

Why Aquaphor Lip Repair is a Must-Have for Travelers

  • Seals in moisture and provides long-lasting relief
  • Slanted tip provides easy application
  • #1 dermatologist recommended lip brand

24. Beauty Bakerie Flour Setting Powder

Y’all I didn’t even have to think about what my favorite setting powder was. It is Beauty Bakerie Flour powder hands down. Their translucent powder sits on top of a made-up face locking all of your hard work in like nothing else I’ve found. It’s smooth and works every time. You only need a little bit so splurge!

Why Beauty Bakerie Flour is the Best Setting Powder

  • Lightweight and super smooth
  • Adorable themed packaging
  • Matte finish kicks your look up a notch
  • Vegan paraben-free ingredients
  • Wide range of powders available to match all skin tones
  • Black-owned business

25. Skindavia- The Makeup Finishing Spray 16+ Hour Setting Spray

Setting spray is a makeup must-have for me. Honestly, I don’t know how I lived for so long without it. My first exposure to it was when it came in a Beauty Bakerie mystery box I ordered. Living in Texas the humidity would melt my face off on some days. Not when I locked it all in with setting spray though! Unfortunately, they discontinued theirs so I’ve had to test out other brands to find a replacement.

The best setting sprays use an even fine mist. You don’t want one wet spot on a cheek and no spray on your forehead. A lot of travel sizes have pump sprayers vs pressurized so be sure to “practice” before your trip.

Why Skindavia Makeup Finishing Spray is the Best Travel Setting Spray

  • Used by makeup artists to lock in looks for long days and nights
  • Great for all climates – moisturizing helps on ski trips and oil control helps with hot and humid spots
  • Doesn’t settle into wrinkles and imperfections like some setting sprays
  • Convenient travel size

Makeup Tip: Tropical getaway  in a super humid climate? Spray after applying your foundation, concealer and contouring. Let it dry. Complete the rest of your makeup and spray it again. It will keep your makeup in place all day and night!

26. Neutrogena Makeup Remover Towelettes

An important part of a makeup routine is removing your makeup at the end of the day. However, makeup-removing wipes are usually packaged in a way that is anything but travel-friendly. They are bulky, have flaps that don’t actually reseal and sometimes leak liquid. For quick trips where you only need three or four wipes, bringing a big full-size pack seems like overkill. These individually packaged wipes are perfect to keep on hand for trips as they come up.

Why Neutrogena Makeup Remover Towelettes are Perfect for Travel

  • Individual packages make it easy to pack only what you need for the trip, saving space
  • Wipes remove even waterproof and water-resistant makeup
  • Ophthalmologist, dermatologist and allergist tested
  • Compostable
  • Full-sized wipe

27. RunnerUp: Juno & Co Exfoliating Face Wash

If you have never tried a powder-to-foam cleanser as a part of your skincare product routine, you’ve been missing out! The first time I saw a powder-to-foam product was when one showed up in a subscription box. You shake a little powder into your hand, add some water and lather it into a creamy foam. It’s perfect for travel. You can dose out a little bit into travel containers  based on how long you’ll be gone.

Why Juno & Co Exfoliating Face Wash is the RunnerUp Makeup Remover

  • Removes makeup, cleanses and exfoliates at the same time
  • Hypoallergenic and great for sensitive skin
  • Leaves skin feeling clean and fresh
  • Great for travel since it doesn’t have to go in your toiletry bag of liquid products

28. Majestic Bombay Fine Point & Slant Tweezer Set

Tweezers are a must-have for any trip. Whether you need to tame some eyebrows or pull out a splinter, they’re good to have with you. You may think that all tweezers are created equal, but they’re not. A lot of the generic drugstore ones don’t get the best grip on hair. We have a favorite set that locks onto any hair they find.

Why Majestic Bombay is our Favorite Tweezer Set

  • Set comes with slant tweezers and point tweezers
  • One of the best pair of point tweezers we’ve found, super accurate
  • Fun bright colors available

Picking the Best Travel Makeup For Your Style

Makeup is a deeply personal decision. Different people like different looks, have different skin tones, have aversions to different textures or have different skin needs. In the long run, you are the one who needs to be happy with your choices. Hopefully, this list gets you started as you pack the carry-on for your next adventure. Happy travels!

Best Travel Makeup and Tips

By Helene Sula

I need my makeup to last all day and then some. I might wake up at sunrise, need to do a photo shoot, go on a walking tour, explore a museum, hike a mountain, watch the sunset, go to dinner, and then head to a bar for drinks. And I need my makeup to stay in place the entire time. I know what products that sty all day, no matter where your wanderlust takes you.

I'm finally sharing the best travel makeup (and tips!) after 3 years of traveling almost full time.

I like to do my makeup in the morning, quickly, and have it last all day. As a travel blogger, my schedule is often demanding. I wake up early and often don't come back until late at night. I also want as much sleep as possible so I can wake up and take on the day. But I do spare about 5-10 minutes to look my best. I've scoured the globe, literally, to find the best travel makeup. I always pack the easiest, most travel-friendly, and longest lasting makeup to ensure I'm feeling my best.

travel makeup routine

Dress found here .

Whether you travel often or are always on the move, you need a simple makeup routine that will last. These makeup essentials and tips will help you make packing a breeze because they won't load you down with too many bulky items. I'll be sharing the best products, exactly how I apply them, and tips for packing your travel beauty essentials. After all, we deserve to look great no matter where we are. And we shouldn't need to lug all our makeup around in order to be picture perfect for selfies!

Every single product I'm mentioning has been used for months, sometimes even years. These are staples that I know will stay all day and make you feel pretty.

Here's what's in the post:

Why Listen to Me

Travel makeup tips, best travel makeup kits, best travel makeup bag, best recommendations for travel makeup, best long-wearing lipsticks, best travel sized makeup, products, and skin care.

I'd like to think I'm low maintenance (my husband is cackling at the mere mention of this) but I need makeup when I travel. I know I'm going to be in photos and I like to look put together, even when I'm exploring a new city. Even though I pack everything into a single carry-on backpack , I know that I don't want to abandon my beauty routine for the sake of space.

If you're looking for the best makeup for travel I have you fully covered. And I'm not just talking about foundation.

If I'm at home, I can most likely be found watching beauty gurus on YouTube touting the latest contour routine. And while I love watching YouTube (who doesn't) I know that they often chase new products. I tend to stick with stuff that is tried and true. I don't have the luxury of a full makeup closet to take with me around the world. So I need to bring what I know works.

I've tried and tested the best of the best products. I know what will stay through the long days of roaming the streets of Paris, to the eyeliner that won't run on the beaches of Barcelona. After traveling almost full time for nearly three years I know these products will work for you.

Of course, you want to avoid bulky items . They take up space and are a hassle to pack- especially if you're trying to cram everything in a carry on for a 21 day trip to Romania. Or maybe that's just me! I also recommend avoiding glass containers . If it's dropped, it most likely will break. P.S. here's how I pack my entire suitcase .

Another way to save space is by using makeup in multiple ways. I often use my bronzer as an eye shadow and a lipstick as a blush. I don't have room for large, bulky eye shadow palettes or an extra concealer. I'll sometimes use my powder as a dry shampoo (this really helps to make your hair less oily!). So I try and use each product as much as I possibly can.

Use TSA approved travel containers . These are portable and sized correctly which means your stuff won't be taken. Remember, it needs to be 3.4 ounces or less liquid in each container. I recommend this brand because it not only comes with bottles, it also includes two small disc containers (kind of like a contact lens size) which is perfect for your foundation. Travel size makeup can really help you save space. A great place to find travel-sized makeup is right here .

I carry a mirror with a light . My mom calls this, “the ugly mirror of truth.” It's magnified a bit and is the perfect size for a purse or pocket. This is great for checking my teeth fixing, my lipstick (that is always a bit outside my lip line), and great for dim lighting situations or the night time. If you've ever been in a hotel with bad lighting (that yellow-green glow is the worst for applying makeup) then this mirror will save you.

Makeup wipes are also something I never travel without . It's a bonus if you don't have time to shower to use these and feel refreshed. At night I usually wash my face and moisturize, you can see my entire skin care routine here .

Palettes are your friend . If you find a palette you like, stick with it. I have a palette that includes bronzer, blush, and highlighter (and I'll also use these colors for eye shadow). Having this all-in-one makeup kit makes it easy to pack and you'll have less to think about when packing.

I like travel makeup kits that include options for your eyes, cheek, and highlight. When it's altogether you won't forget anything and it's all in one packaging makes it super simple for travel. Stowaway is an awesome brand that only carries travel-sized cosmetics. They have super high quality formula products and great pricing. If you aren't picky about brands then Amazon has great travel makeup kits. Also, Clinique has a simple one that includes almost every single thing you need: mascara, blush, eye shadow, bronzer, powder, highlighter, even lipstick, all in this one kit .

You can also find empty palettes on Amazon that have magnets so you can put all your makeup in one place. This also helps you avoid breaking your compacts. Which brings to my next point…

I've broken so many compacts of bronzer I've lost count. I remember we were staying in a beautiful Tuscan bed and breakfast that was once a monastery. The sink was a pedestal, and I balanced my bronzer on the edge while I swept blush over my cheeks. A slight nudge and, crash! The compact hit the floor, breaking the bronzer and spewing the contents on the white tile floor. Whoops. If I had packed a travel-size, or a cream based product, this wouldn't have happened. This bronzer is still with me, but I now have a makeup bag that opens up on all sides so I can rest it anywhere, instead of on the edge of a sink.

I always travel with two makeup bags . Always.

One is for my liquids. It's a clear, TSA- approved, durable plastic bag where I put my foundation, concealer, lipsticks, toothpaste, etc. Remember, you are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of any liquids, gels, creams, and pastes in your carry on. These liquids need to be in containers that hold 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters. These travel containers are the perfect size. If it's any larger it must go into a checked bag.

travel makeup routine

The other bag I travel with zips on three different sides which is game changing. I love this because it lays flat and I can easily see all the contents inside the bag. I never knew how much I liked this until I traveled without it. I lose time when I have to fish around in the bag to find something. This handy case is the perfect size to slip into your carry on bag. It's crushproof so it ensures your brushes stay protected. It's also a great little organizer.

travel makeup routine

First and foremost, my routine is super easy. I usually wake up a few minutes before my husband, and creak into the bathroom in hopes I won't wake him up. I'm listing everything out in order of appearance, and then explaining how I use it. If you'd like to see this routine in action, I've saved it to my Instagram Story Highlight under “Makeup routine.”

I've spent a lot of time with these products. Meaning, I've tried and tested many different brands and cult beauty favorites, but these are all products I know that will work. Nothing looks worse than patchy makeup after a long day of travel.

Everything I recommend will last all day, is sweat-proof, humidity-proof, and looks natural and beautiful on virtually anyone.

travel makeup routine

Mac Strobe Cream – after moisturizing with a lotion with SPF, I slather myself in the Mac Strobe Cream. This lightweight moisturizer is packed with botanicals and gives the skin a pearlescent effect, making it look like you didn't just spend the night tossing and turning getting used to the new hotel bed. There are a few different colors, I get the gold toned one as I feel this makes me look more like a goddess. Which is the point, right?

Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation – The holy grail of all foundations of all time. I have tried so many foundations. This one is the best. Ever. Whether you're traveling or not, this 24-hour stay-in-place foundation gives you a natural and flawless finish. It is full coverage, evens your skin tone, covers imperfections and makes your skin look beautiful. I cannot live without this foundation. I'm on my 18th bottle. It's not cheap, but it lasts for months! It looks like your real skin. It comes in more than 40 shades so there are so many options. I apply it with a flat top kabuki brush for super quick application.

Travel application: I squirt one pump on my brush and apply all over my face.

P.S. I love all the brushes from this line .

Moisture Surge CC Cream Hydrating Colour Corrector Broad Spectrum SPF 30 – If I want a more natural look, I'll mix the Estee Lauder Double wear with this CC cream. It contains SPF so I know I'm protected from the sun!

It Cosmetics CC Cream – If you simply have no time but want to look put together, I swear by It Cosmetics CC cream . It contains SPF 50 so you can wake up, apply this with your fingers, add some mascara and be completely ready for the day.

Tarte Shape Tape Concealer – A cult favorite for a reason. One of the questions I get most often on my Instagram story is: what's under my eyes? And it's ALWAYS Tarte Shape Tape. I've tried other concealers (Nars, Too Faced, It Cosmetics) but nothing can beat this one. It's full coverage without giving me any creases or flaking throughout the day. This lasts all day and helps to illuminate your skin. I use a beauty blender to blend it under my eyes.

Travel Application: I wipe the doe foot applicator off the side of the tube (I don't want too much product) and go underneath my eyes in a triangle shape. I then blend it out with a damp beauty blender. I'll use any excess on my eyelids, chin, forehead, and nose in that order.

Loose Setting powder – I am convinced this is what keeps my makeup in place. I use this under my eyes and then sweep any excess across my face. It helps matte-ify your skin and gives you a slightly airbrushed look. I love the Laura Mercier translucent loose setting powder , but also recommend the Make Up Forever Pressed powder as well. I've used this same exact one for over a year and I still haven't hit pan yet! Here's one more option in pressed form as well if the Make Up Forever version isn't available.

Travel Application: Sweep under eyes, jaw, and forehead. I use the included pad to apply.

Hoola Contour Bronzer   – I'm a bronzer addict. Ever since I moved to Germany I have become a much paler version of myself. The Hoola bronzer gives a soft, natural look. I love that it comes in a mini form too so it's super easy to pack. I particularly like to use this one for contour since it looks very natural. The bronzer does come with a small brush but I'm just not a fan. I like to use a small brush that's perfect for application on your cheekbones.

Travel Application : I put this on my forehead, cheekbones, sides of my nose, and under my chin.

Too Faced Sun Bunny Bronzer – As mentioned previously, I am very pale. So much so that I look sickly without bronzer. While I use the Hoola bronzer for contour, I use the Too Faced Bronzer to give my skin a luminous, natural looking tan. It gives you a classic glow and is such a universal shade for so many skin tones. This bronzer makes it look like you've been kissed by the sun, despite living in Germany where it's cloudy 87% of the time. I swear by it! I use an angled brush to sweep this all over my face. This also doubles as an eyeshadow and gives a perfect natural look.

Travel Application: Using the angled brush I sweep this all over my face and neck.  I use the lighter side all over my eye and the darker side on my crease. I like this brush for eye shadow. It's dual ended so it's multipurpose.

Mac Powder Blush – A good blush can really tie the whole look together. I love a natural looking blush to give your cheeks a rosy glow. I love Mac Blushes because they pack well, last forever, and are suitable for all skin tones. I have quite a few colors from this line: Gingerly – for a natural look, Desert Rose – perfect for soft pink cheeks, Peachy Keen – for that coral flush, and Pinch Me – for an everyday, goes-with-everything blush.

Travel Application: I use this fluffy brush and apply this to the apples of my cheeks and the tip of my nose.

Highlighter – I don't wear highlighter every day, but when I do, I want it to look natural. I go back and forth between a cream one (super easy for travel!) and a pressed highlighter. I've tried so many and often feel that highlighters are tricky. They can leave you looking overly made up or a bit ridiculous. The Estee Lauder On the Glow Highlighter is so natural looking. I don't want to look like I have glitter all over my face. I'd rather look like I have a good sheen. For powder form, nothing beats the Becca Highlighters . They are pigmented, beautiful, and easy to apply. I love the Becca Opal Shimmering Skin Perfector because it gives you a high-impact glow without looking fake.

Travel Application: I use the cream highlighter by dotting it on the top of my cheekbones, then using my finger to blend it out. I'll also put this in the inner corner of my eye, my brow bone, tip of my nose, and cupids bow of my lip. I'll use the small eye shadow brush for the powder version and apply it to the same places.

Mac Fix + Setting Spray – After all your hard work, it's time to set everything in place. I use the Mac Fit + setting spray. It helps to ensure your makeup doesn't stray and refreshes your skin. I also think this helps tie your makeup all together so you look fresh.

Travel Application: I spritz once or twice on my face. Great to also refresh throughout the day.

Maybelline Brow Drama – I don't like overdone brows. I think it looks like Lady Gaga in “A Star is Born” put a piece of tape over her real eyebrows. I am blonde, but my eyebrows are not. I like to keep them in place and add just a bit of oomph. I like the budget friendly Brow Drama Sculpting Eye Brow tool from Maybelline. It's also super quick to apply. I feel like people spend 10 minutes on their eyebrows. I don't have time for that. I swipe and go.

Travel Application: I use this in an upward motion on my eyebrows to keep them in place and add a bit of color. I'm in the shade blonde .

Cils Booster Mascara Primer – Using a mascara primer is game changing. This primer from Lancome coats and smooths lashes to maximize results of mascara.

Travel Application: Use one coat and let it sit for about 30-45 seconds before applying mascara. You want it to be slightly tacky.

travel makeup routine

Monsieur Big Mascara – My favorite part! Mascara always transforms my look. I've tried so many mascaras, but always reach for this one. This 24-hour long lasting, never flaky, black mascara is the best out there. It gives you big volume and it never smudges. I hate that racoon look and despise when mascara ends up under my eyes after a long day. This never falters. There is a drug store option here , but I still think Monsieur Big is better. Long and thick lashes forever y'all.

Travel Application: Apply a few coats for maximum, dramatic lashes.

If you struggle with long lashes, I recommend a lash booster, like this one from Neu Lash .

Lipstick needs a category of its own. I am a lipstick junkie. When I moved abroad with just two suitcases, I still managed to fit nearly 75 lipsticks in my bag. I think they fit the mood and make you feel instantly pretty. I have what seems like every color on the planet, yet always find myself gravitating to purchasing a new dusty rose color.

I personally like to wear long-wearing lipstick so I know it won't budge. I've tried them all. Really, I even ordered an expensive brand that people were raving about and I had to drive to the post office in Germany, wait in line for half an hour, and pay an additional deposit just to get some lipstick. It's safe to say I'm committed.

travel makeup routine

There are four brands that I think have a beautiful range of colors, last all day, and aren't overly drying.

Mac Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolor – This lipstick does not budge. I've worn this everywhere- swimming, drinking, eating pizza and ice cream (you know, for research purposes) and it stays all day. I do wish there were more shades (I'd buy them all) but I particularly love the shade “Lady be Good”. I usually pair this with a liner underneath.

Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink Lip Color – I cannot get over how awesome these drug store lipsticks are. These matte lipsticks come in a variety of beautiful shades (I prefer the shade “Lover”). The formula is a bit sticky but it lasts into the next day (you know, if you forget to take makeup off) and it hasn't budged. Incredible. Sometimes I'll top with this Maybelline Color Sensational lipstick in “Baddest Beige”.

Dior Addict Lip Tattoo – The most luscious colors that look so natural. This looks good with or without makeup. Just put it on and you look instantly lovely.

Sephora Lip Cream Stain – So many colors and last all day. These silky colors glide on and make for a gorgeous stay-all-day, highly pigmented color.

These are products that are ready to go, already in travel sized form! There are travel sizes for Amazon right here , Ulta here , and Sephora here . Target also has a pretty good selection of travel size makeup. That means, it's TSA approved (under 3.4 oz) and it will easily fit in your carry on. Here are my travel sized makeup recommendations:

It Cosmetics CC Cream – SPF 50 and evens skin tone, perfect if you're in a rush.

Hoola Mini Bronzing Powder – Benefit has tons of small sized, travel friendly makeup products.

Mac Fix + – you don't want to carry around a bulky bottle. This 1 ounce (30 ml) size is perfect for travel and gives you room in your carry on. Another option is the travel size Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray .

Benefit Roller Liner Liquid Eyeliner – I'm not really an eyeliner girl. But if I am, I want it to be small and easy. This one meets all those criteria and lasts all day.

Tarte Pro Glow Palette – I mentioned that I loved a good palette to make carrying your makeup a breeze. I like this one from Tarte. It comes with blush, highlighter, and bronzer. I also like this one from Sephora.

Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm – I am obsessed with cleansing balms. I just think it's the best way to remove makeup without damaging your skin, particularly your eyes. I prefer the Colleen Rothschild version ( these containers from Amazon also work well). I put this in a small sample size of an Estee Lauder cream and take it with me. But I also love the Clinique version of this as well. Check out my entire skin care recommendations here . These are the same exact products I've been using and swear by for over 5 years!

Gillette mini Razor – I know this isn't makeup, but I had to include this razor. It is the perfect mini size and even comes with a handy little case.

Mini Straightener – This little straightener is so small it fits in a little pocket in my travel backpack. I use this on days when I need to look a little more polished. I also recommend this mini blow dryer . For more travel hair recommendations, check out this post .

Lastly, sharing the backpack I travel with. I did so much research on this bag, and there is simply nothing better than the Osprey Porter Back Pack . I have traveled with it on 2-day trips all the way to 3 weeks plus. It just seems to keep expanding! It is small enough to be a carry on and comfortable enough to walk with all day.

I know, I know, I recommended a lot of makeup products. I wanted to make sure to give you the best travel makeup tips, products, and holy-grail products to help you make choosing the best a breeze.

I'd love to know… what are your travel make up must haves?

My Five-Minute Travel Makeup Routine

Mini bottles of makeup products on a tray

Confession time: I used to bring way too much makeup with me when traveling (actually, I used to bring way too much everything with me). But once I started unpacking mindfully , noting everything that was used during the trip and everything that was not used, I was able to whittle it down. I stopped packing any makeup or skincare for “just in case” and only pack my tried-and-true essentials. Now, all of my makeup fits in the smaller of the two Leather Travel Cases from Cuyana (reviewed here – with an updated review here ). Best of all, my daily makeup routine at home has changed too – when I noticed how little I needed to feel “ready” while traveling, I reduced the number of products I use on a daily basis.

Today I’m sharing what I consider my “essential” products and steps. Everyone’s routine is different of course, and for the brow-pencil-and-lipbalm gals, this may seem like a maximalist’s list. But this is my routine that takes me from fresh-faced to all-done in five minutes or less (because I promise you don’t want to be stuck in your Paris/Milan/NYC hotel or Airbnb doing makeup – you want to be out enjoying the place you came so far to see):

STEP ONE: START WITH A CLEAN FACE

Though this post is more about makeup than skincare since everyone’s skincare needs are unique, I’m going to climb on a (TSA-approved) soapbox and tell you that it’s really important to keep up with washing your face. Sweat, dirt, and city grime are all major by-products of travel, and messed-up skin is not the souvenir you want to bring home. At the very least, wash your face at night before bed; if water is not available I recommend using micellar water (I love this one ) to cleanse on the go.

A photo of Alyssa wearing no makeup

STEP TWO: PREP AND PRIME

I start with eyedrops , which help reduce redness ( buh-bye redeye from last night’s flight), quickly pass a caffeine eye-roller under my eyes to deflate puffiness, and swipe on some shimmery, eye-opening eyeshadow primer to seal in the eyeshadow I’m going to apply. Time spent: 45 seconds.

Alyssa holds a caffeine eye roller from Garnier

STEP THREE: BROWS

My eyebrows are so light that they are nearly clear, which means I tint them at home every few weeks and always right before a long trip. When they are freshly tinted I can usually get away with a quick swipe by a spoolie brush, but I prefer to sweep a little Boy Brow through to thicken, darken, and help them stay in place. Time spent: 40 seconds.

Alyssa applies Boy Brow from Glossier to her eyebrows

STEP FOUR: SUNSCREEN

Because I said so, that’s why . We’re outside a lot more than usual when we’re away from home, so I try to be really diligent about sunscreen application. Applying at this stage allows the formula to settle in before you layer any foundation over. I really like the clear, non-greasy sunscreen from Glossier. Time spent: 35 seconds.

Alyssa holds a bottle of sunscreen from Glossier

STEP FIVE: EYES

Now that the eyeshadow primer is dry, it’s time to line, color, and add mascara. I don’t typically go full-on eyeliner during the daytime; instead, I smudge it along my lashline from about the midway point to the outer corners of my eyes to give just a little definition. On my bottom lash line, I use a pale pink inner-rim eyeliner *, which brightens my eyes and makes them look larger. Finally, I add a quick swipe of two neutral eyeshadows, dipping my brush in both the matte and shimmer shadows so I just get a nice sheen. (I’ll touch on which shadow palette I use later in the post, along with two palettes that didn’t quite work for me). After eyeshadow, a quick comb-through of black mascara on my top and bottom lashes adds the finishing touch and makes my eyes look more open and awake. Time spent: 1 minute, 25 seconds.

Alyssa holds two eyeliner pencils

STEP SIX: FACE

Due to rosacea, my skin tone is difficult to match. Once I found this light-coverage formula from Chanel, I knew I’d never need to buy another foundation again. To make the foundation look even more natural, I apply it to my face mixed with a little lotion . Right now I’m not setting it with a powder, but that’s because I’m still on the hunt for the perfect small, lightweight pressed powder to reduce the risk of spillage. Any leads? Time spent: 45 seconds.

Alyssa applies foundation to her cheek

STEP SEVEN: LIPS

I don’t have much luck with lipstick when we’re traveling; it either flakes off or disappears onto the edge of the many cups of coffee we consume. Instead, I stick with the ’90s-essential Black Honey . It’s sheer but buildable, still looks good as it starts to fade, and  it’s never flaked on me. It’s a classic for a reason. Time spent: 15 seconds.

Alyssa applies lipstick

Finished, with 35 seconds to spare!

A TALE OF THREE EYESHADOW PALETTES

Three travel eyeshadow palettes

I didn’t mean to purchase three travel-sized eyeshadow palettes. It’s just really tough to get a sense of the way the eyeshadow colors truly look and how they will hold up through the course of a day while you’re standing in a store with a salesperson breathing down your neck. So, in the midst of somewhat of an existential crisis, I purchased three palettes before ending up with my Goldilocks version.

The City Mini Palette in Chill Brunch Neutrals, by Maybelline

The City Mini Palette from Maybelline

Initially, I purchased The City Mini Palette in Chill Brunch Neutrals, by Maybelline . The price tag was right, the size was right, and they are heavily pigmented – the only thing is that the colors were too shimmery for daytime wear. I used this very lightly over the course of a few weekends away and finally purchased a replacement.

Naked Basics, by Urban Decay

The Naked Basics palette from Urban Decay

The next kit I ordered was Naked Basics, by Urban Decay . At home, I use the now-defunct Naked Smoky palette (RIP) which I love so very much. Purchasing my favorite four shades and placing them in UD’s custom tin (no longer available) would set me back $90. I figured the Basics palette would be close enough to my favorite shades, but I was wrong. They are beautiful, but even when layered over a shimmery primer, are still very matte. I probably could achieve the look I’m after by combining these two palettes, but why bring two when I really only have space for one?

Full Exposure Travel Palette, from Smashbox

The Full Exposure Travel Palette from Smashbox

Enter the  Full Exposure Travel Palette, from Smashbox *. A combination of four shimmery shadows and four matte shadows in a case slightly larger than a credit card. I wear the lighter colors during the day and add a quick swipe of the darker ones in the crease for the evening (and I’ll probably never wear that shimmery silver shade, which is a bit of a waste). Perhaps by the time I need to replace it, I’ll be able to find a palette where all shadows work for me; for now, I’ll be using this one.

It’s so fun to see your routine, and I’ve been very curious about Black Honey. I’ve been looking for a lip product that makes me look a little less dead, but still natural, you know?

If I’m travelling in a hot country or doing outdoorsy stuff, I usually don’t wear face makeup, even though I don’t have perfect skin. Doesn’t make sense to me if it’s just going to slide off!

I keep makeup pretty low-key and use just the basics: -Tinted moisturizer -Sunscreen -Mascara -Dual ended brown eyeliner and highlighter -Chapstick -Eyelash curler

Actually my routine isn’t that much different than my everyday one!

Black Honey is the only lipstick I continuously buy replacements for, and the price is quite reasonable (I buy about a tube a year). True – I should have mentioned that I don’t go through my full routine when we’re going on outdoor “adventures.” I typically stick to waterproof mascara and Boy Brow for that! I’m curious about this magical eyeliner/highlighter combo, however…

I used to pack a ton of makeup when I went on vacation, but discovered that I didn’t end up wearing even half of it. I always think I’m going to want to get dolled up, but in reality I just want to enjoy my time without worrying about my face. I don’t wear a ton of makeup everyday ( brow pencil and lip balm is my jam), so I pretty much bring my everyday face stuff with me. This includes: brow pencil, mascara, blush, eyelash curler, and lip balm. I usually throw in a lip pencil and a single shimmer eye shadow for any fancy thing we do. Having only a few products means I can keep stuff in my usual makeup bag and don’t have to worry about it taking up space.

This is so true! Space is at a premium when traveling and I grew so sick of toting products I didn’t use. What kind of eyelash curler do you use? I’ve had such an aversion to them after ripping out several lashes, but am willing to give it another try!

35 Thousand

Despite all the (obvious) positives, traveling can wreak havoc on your skin. Among the culprits: new climates, indulgent food and drinks , fatigue, drying plane cabin air, and more. For this reason, you’ll want to pack a skincare regimen that counteracts these stressors as well as targets your unique everyday needs regardless of the location.

To help you choose the best travel kit for your next adventure , we researched and rounded up selections that address a variety of circumstances and skin concerns, and fall under the TSA 3-1-1 guidelines . Our overall favorite, Fenty Skin’s The Glow Around 4-piece Travel Skincare Essentials Set, stands out for its consolidated product lineup with multifunctional items, a reasonable price point, and the versatility to be used on nearly any type of skin. But, if you want to target specific concerns or environmental stressors, read on. We’ve culled the best items for a multitude of scenarios.

These are the best travel skincare sets to shop:

Best Overall

Fenty skin the glow around 4-piece travel skincare essentials set.

Multiple products in this vegan kit do double duty, and SPF is included.

If you prefer an even more minimalistic travel skin routine, shop the brand’s three-piece set instead.

We’ve long been traveling with Fenty Beauty products in tow, and this skincare assembly — featuring standouts from Rihanna’s Fenty Skin line — is our number one pick. The vegan set, suited for normal, dry, combination, and oily skin types, includes four miniature skincare products: an antioxidant-packed cleanser, a toner-serum hybrid, a moisturizer with sun protection, and an AHA exfoliator with a reusable applicator. It has just a little more than the bare necessities to help combat travel-induced skin stress, but it’s not excessive either; it’ll all easily fit inside a clear quart-sized bag, and won’t break the bank.

We especially love that multiple products in the kit do double duty. The 1.5-ounce Total Cleans’r face wash easily wipes away dirt, oil, and makeup, eliminating the need to pack a separate makeup-removing product. The lightweight 1-ounce Hydra Vizor moisturizer contains SPF 30 and also works well as a primer. Furthermore, the moisturizer’s pump-style container is extra sanitary for travel (so you’re not transferring any germs from your fingers into a product tub). For those who prefer a more minimal routine, the brand also offers a three-piece version of the travel kit (sans exfoliator), which comes with a trial-sized body cream.

Best Overall, Runner-up

35thousand all the radiance set.

Four full-sized products (1.7 ounces each) including an SPF 30 serum and bamboo washcloth come in a clear zip case.

It’s on the more expensive side for the size.

If you’ve never heard of 35thousand, it’s a skincare line that was made for travel — literally. All of the brand’s products are travel-friendly in terms of size, containers, and the skin concerns they address. The set is more of a splurge, but that’s because each product in this vegan kit was carefully designed to function in place of multiple other products. For example, the makeup-removing cleansing balm can double as a hydration mask when left on skin for 10-20 minutes. Or, try the refreshing and toning mist in place of water (along with the cleanser) if you don’t have access to a sink.

We love that the day serum includes SPF 30 and a subtle tint hint for added glow while on the move, and the hyaluronic acid-rich cream delivers much needed hydration. The best part? The items come housed in a clear zip case (with room for a few more products) and there’s a mini bamboo washcloth which comes in a smaller zip case to keep it separate from the rest of your stash.

Best for Sensitive Skin

Ren clean skincare evercalm skin zen trio.

Natural ingredients like plant oils can help soothe delicate skin.

You may want to consult your dermatologist first if your skin is highly sensitive.

If your skin tends to be fickle, you may want to follow a less-is-more approach to your routine. Enter this three-piece system, which includes only the essentials. The ultra-gentle cleansing milk is the perfect wash for delicate skin, and the kit follows that with a calming cream for daytime and a recovery balm with an intensely nourishing barrier for bedtime. Even if you don’t generally have sensitive skin, travel conditions (such as plane cabins, new climates, and bedsheet fabrics you’re not used to) can cause your skin to flare up on vacation, and these soothing products featuring sea buckthorn berry, jojoba, and sunflower seed oils can be a welcome relief.

Best for Combination Skin

Caudalie vinoperfect brightening solution set.

The oil-free gel moisturizer is great for warmer climates.

If you prefer a more matte finish, you might not love the pearlescent moisturizer.

Designed to target uneven skin texture, this three-piece set includes a gentle glycolic essence (which the brand recommends applying with a cotton round after cleansing), a dark spot serum (to be used on face, neck, and décolleté), and a brightening moisturizer (to be slathered on morning and night, after serum application). The oil-free moisturizer has a lightweight gel texture, which makes it a great companion for trips to warmer climates. It also has pearlescent minerals which deliver an immediate visible glow to skin.

Best for Oily Skin

Priori the clear skin now kit.

This no-fuss routine is aimed at clearing and soothing blemish-prone skin.

To avoid possible irritation, start slow with the gel perfector only.

If your skin tends to break out under stress, you’ll need targeted products to combat the effects of a change in daily routine. This small-but-mighty set includes a two-week supply of skincare essentials designed to offer blemish control and clear oily skin. The first step is a calming lactic acid cleanser, which is still tough enough to remove eye makeup. Next comes a salicylic acid gel perfector aimed at balancing oily skin that can lead to breakouts, and that doubles as a mattifying primer. (The brand recommends starting usage at a few times a week to see how your skin reacts and before bumping up to daily application.) Finally, there’s an oil-free, silky-smooth replenishing moisturizer, which can also be used post sunburn to soothe skin.

Best for Dry Skin

Biossance miracle moisture set.

Four squalene-packed products work in tandem to help target parched skin.

The set does not include a cleanser or a product with SPF.

Plane cabins are practically synonymous with dry skin. That’s because an aircraft’s filtration system — which takes in outside air and circulates it in the cabin — causes humidity to drop well below what is comfortable for most people. Each of the four steps in this routine (a soothing eye cream, a plumping serum, a rich moisturizer, and a finishing Vitamin C oil) contain squalane , an ingredient said to have powerful hydrating properties. Not only is the kit a good fit for anyone with naturally drier skin or who may be experiencing abnormal dryness due to time of year or destination climates, but it can be great to boost lost moisture due to the flight alone. We love that this set includes a really creamy eye product, since delicate eye-area skin might need a little extra love after an aptly monikered red-eye flight .

Best for Normal Skin

Olehenriksen find your glow brightening skincare set.

Packed with vitamin C, these products can help brighten dull, travel-stressed skin.

This set does not include SPF, and you’ll want to layer some of top of any areas where PHAs were applied.

If your skin isn’t fussy, you can focus your routine on products that target long-term skin concerns. Olehenriksen’s four-piece set is anchored by the hero ingredient Vitamin C , which can treat photoaging and hyperpigmentation. An orange fruit water-based daily cleanser, a Vitamin C serum, a nourishing gel cream, and a color-correcting eye cream are designed to help improve luminosity, which can certainly suffer when we put our skin through the stress of traveling. The weightless-feeling gel is cool to the touch, making this set ideal for warmer-weather locations — but don’t forget to pack SPF for vital sun protection, which is not included in this kit.

Best for Lips

Fresh sugar collection lip care set.

These tiny lip balms deliver moisture and a variety of subtle colors.

Depending on the length of your trip, you may not need five different options.

We’ve talked a lot about skin dryness due to travel, but don’t neglect your parched pout. Fresh’s cult-favorite Sugar lip products are famous for delivering moisture along with subtle, buildable color. They’ll do double duty on your next trip by replenishing chapped lips and potentially replacing any lipsticks you might have considered packing.

This five-piece set includes mini versions of the brand’s best-selling colorless Advanced Therapy lip treatment (a must-have to combat drying plane cabin air), refreshing and softening Mint Rush, and three buildable tinted balms. The color balms — in rosé (a rosy pink), honey (a warm terracotta), and petal (a nude blush) — deliver a subtle tint with one swipe and a deeper shade when layered. If you don’t feel like carrying five lip products, the brand also makes a three-piece set .

Best for Eyes

Charlotte tilbury recovery skin set.

A cult-favorite cream is coupled with two soothing, hydrating serums.

This set is best suited for normal and dry skin types and does not include any cleansing products or SPF.

Jet lag, lack of sleep on red-eye flights, and more can all add up to dryness and redness around the eye area while jet setting. Charlotte Tilbury’s Recovery Skin Set is designed to restore hydration and plumpness with its trio of soothing products. Included is a half-ounce container of the celebrity-loved brand ’s cult-favorite hyaluronic acid-based Magic Cream, a mini serving of a lightweight Vitamin C serum, and a depuffing eye serum containing caffeine. We especially love the eye serum because it has a metal applicator tip which delivers a cooling sensation to your eye area when applied.

Best for In-flight Use

Shielded beauty self defense system set.

We keep these moisturizing minis close while in the air to replenish skin mid-flight.

You’ll need to pack other skincare items for a full routine as this set only has a hydrating mist, facial moisturizer, and hand and body lotion.

Plane cabins are notoriously harsh on skin and just a couple of hours in the air can leave your epidermis feeling parched. Whenever we fly, we love to keep a teeny bottle of hydrating mist — such as the soothing and energizing spritz in this three-piece kit — handy for a little mid-flight refresh. You can even apply it over makeup. Equally essential: the hand and body lotion which can aid any exposed body skin pre-, mid-, and post-flight and the nourishing facial moisturizer. Designed to protect skin against environmental elements, this set is also ideal for packing for new climates that your skin isn’t accustomed to.

Best for Warmer Climates

Image skincare ready, set, discover set.

A minimalistic skincare routine means more time for soaking in your trip .

If you prefer a more radiant finish on your beauty products, the mattifying moisturizer might not be your favorite.

When outdoor activities are on the itinerary, sun protection should be at the top of your packing list (yes, even in colder locations). With ingredients designed to hydrate and brighten — plus SPF — Image Skincare’s three-item set is a great low-fuss find for beach or warm-weather vacations. It starts with a mild cleanser, which is followed by a hydrating and brightening hyaluronic acid- and Vitamin C-packed serum. The last step, a mattifying moisturizer, offers SPF 30 sun protection. A bonus: The products come in a reusable TSA-friendly clear zip case that gives you one less thing to think about while packing for your next adventure.

Best for Colder Climates

Glossier the skincare edit.

The kit comes with two of Glossier’s cult-favorite lip balm minis.

None of the included products have any SPF.

Cold, dry air can quickly lead to skin dryness and redness as well as chapped lips. If you’re traveling to a climate that’s chillier than you’re used to, Glossier’s Skincare Edit set could be a great companion. It includes mini versions of the brand’s makeup-removing Milky Jelly Cleanser, the hydrating Super Bounce Serum (which they recommend pressing 3-4 drops gently into skin after cleansing), a shea- and murumuru-butter-rich moisturizer (which doubles as a primer), and Futuredew (an oil-serum hybrid that should be applied as the last step in your skincare routine, after sunscreen). We love that this kit also gives you two Balm Dotcom lip balms (one non-tinted and one barely-there pink), which will certainly come in handy if your lips dry out when temperatures drop. A bonus: it includes a nylon-spandex headband that's ideal for washing your face, and everything comes in a molded, recyclable paper case.

Tips for Buying Travel-sized Skincare Kits

Prioritize portability.

When traveling, especially via plane, you’ll want your skincare regimen to follow certain guidelines. First, anything going in your carry-on should adhere to the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule (all liquids, gels, and aerosols must be in containers of 3.4 ounces or less and should all fit into a single, clear quart-sized bag). You’ll also want to minimize the number of products you’re hauling as much as possible, per the quart-sized bag.

Consider your usual skin concerns and the climate at your destination

You’ll also want to think about the specific stressors your skin will be exposed to on your trip and stock up on products that can help combat those: Will you be spending ample time in the sun? Are you entering drying, cold weather? Will you be wearing more makeup than usual? These are all things to take into consideration when shopping for products to pack for your next vacation.

6 travel enthusiasts break down their in-flight beauty routines

VIDEO: Ginger Zee tries in-flight skin care

Most of us get off a long flight complaining about dry skin, and feeling gross or drained.

That's not so much the case for these beauty and travel mavens who have taken their daily beauty routines to the skies to help them stay hydrated and preserve their skin's glow while flying.

Allure magazine editor-in-chief Michelle Lee swears by her in-flight skin care routine, posting a video on Instagram of the beauty routine on a seven-hour international flight -- eye masks and all.

"Raise your hand high if you proudly mask on planes!" she posted.

Her key product was the Shiseido Benefiance WrinkleResist24 Pure Retinol Express Smoothing Eye Mask.

travel makeup routine

"Good Morning America" tapped six women who pack Transportation Security Administration-friendly essentials to share their in-flight regimens.

Hannah Bronfman

DJ, founder of HBFIT, Global Adidas Ambassador

Hannah's top picks:

Joanna Czech Facial Massager, Charlotte Tilbury instant magic dry sheet mask, Vintners Daughter face oil, KNC collagen lip mask, KNC collagen lip mask, Summer Fridays jet lag mask

Her routine:

"I love this dry sheet mask because it has loops that go over your ears so it stays in place very well. Then, I use the Joanna Czech face roller and roll it over my face, which actually activates the face mask. Once I finish face rolling for about five minutes, I leave the mask on for another 15 minutes. Next, I remove the mask and use a couple of drops of vintners daughter oil and pat it into my face. I end with the KNC lip mask, and use a good amount of jet lag mask as an under-eye cream, but I use about a pea-sized amount under each eye and I don't really rub it in, I let it sink in."

Tanyka Renee

Travel, beauty and lifestyle digital creator

Tanyka's top picks:

Natural exfoliants made from flaxseeds, rosewater mist, sheet and eye masks, NuScience Cellfood drops, Cellfood Essential Silica Formula, Evolution_18 Beauty Bubbles: Hydration

"Morning of the flight, I make sure to exfoliate my skin to ensure that the moisturizer penetrates deeply into my pores and doesn't sit on top of dead skin cells. I make a natural exfoliator from ground flaxseeds and coconut oil. Then, I apply moisturizer and lip balm. I top all this off with a refreshing, moisturizing Rosewater mist.

Stephanie Flor

CEO of Around The World Beauty, global beauty expert, and beauty director at Unearth Women

Stephanie's top picks:

Plant Alchemy Jet Lag Tincture by Plant Alchemy, Kao Lavender Warm eye mask, Nyakio Maracujá and Yangu Soothing Oil, Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool firming eye gels, My Skineez medical grade compression socks

Stephanie's routine:

"My favorite is the Jet Lag Tincture by Plant Alchemy. This whole plant-based formulation is designed to relax the body, restore circadian balance, and refresh the body clock. The tincture is produced with fine organic herbal ingredients that supports healthy sleep so you don’t miss out on being tired from flying. About two to four drops helps get you relaxed, and I like to drink 12-ounce water to get hydrated instantly before taking flight."

Julie Kandalec

Celebrity manicurist, global traveler, and CEO of Masterclass Nail Academy

Julie's picks:

Bioderma Sensibio H2o Micellar Water makeup remover, Weleda Skin Food moisturizer, Chanel Hydra Beauty Essence Mist, Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Capsules Youth Restoring Serum

Julie's routine:

"Bioderma Sensibio H2o Micellar water makeup remover comes in the perfect travel size, never leaks in my travel bag, and it removes all my makeup without ever pulling skin or any irritation at all."

"I love having Chanel Hydra Beauty Essence Mist because sometimes I am hesitant to use my hands to apply products to my face while traveling (hello foreign bacteria). This mist smells lightly floral and gives a little boost mid-flight and over makeup."

(MORE: 5 fall 2019 hair color trends to try now, according to experts)

Lindsay ellingson.

Model, beauty expert, co-founder and creative director of Wander Beauty

Lindsay's picks:

Wander Beauty Baggage Claim Eye Masks, Wander Beauty Glow Getter Mist, Wander Beauty Extra Mileage Hair Refresher, Slip Silk Eye Mask, gua sha

Lindsay's routine:

"I apply the Baggage Claim Eye Masks 30 minutes before I land to de-puff and brighten my under eyes, especially if I'm headed straight to a shoot or a meeting. Plus, they won't slide off your face and look chicer than your typical eye mask -- perfect for an in-flight selfie."

Nyja Richardson

Content creator

Nyja's picks:

Honest wipes, Lavender mist, shea butter, Jason coconut toothpaste, Thayers Witch Hazel, bonnet or headscarf

Nyja's routine:

"Honest wipes are a must-have for me, especially when traveling with a toddler. Planes aren't always the cleanest so I like to wipe down our section prior to take off."

"I also use Thayers Witch Hatzel when I want to clean my face."

Travel Makeup Bag and Routine

It’s summer! Which means it is officially travel season!

And what does that mean? We’ll have to pack, of course!

With the airlines being annoying and charging us for checked luggage, (which seem to have a 92% chance of landing on the other side of the planet anyway,) and regulations limiting how much of what we can bring, packing is getting tricky. It’s not like the old days anymore. When I went on family vacations as a kid, my entire family of four would jam everything into one 70 pound suitcase and send it on it’s way.

If you haven’t already, be sure to check out my post on writing pristine packing lists . It has some great tips to make sure you feel organized and calm during the packing process so nothing gets left behind.

Today, I’m showing you my must have products for travel. We’ll also talk about how to narrow down to the bare minimum while still having everything you need for any beauty situation. Ready for easy travel beauty? Click to read on!

Travel Makeup Bag and Routine

Packing light is so simple yet so difficult

My goal when I travel is to pack as lightly as possible. C’mon, who wants to be lugging 50 pounds of extra stuff around? Not me. But being a makeup lover, it’s so hard because I just want to take everything. If your inner monologue sounds something like this:  What if I really want to wear green glittery eyeshadow? I’ll just take this big palette. It has everything. Stop right there!

I don’t know about you, but I have never once woken up on vacation and kicked myself for leaving behind my green glittery eyeshadow. Most of the time, I just want to throw on my eyebrows and get out to explore my destination. Oftentimes, I end up not even wearing what minimal makeup I packed simply because I’ve got better things to do than play with makeup.

With this in mind, I pack the most minimal makeup I can, but still enough to do a reasonably full face when I’m feeling fancy. This makeup collection may or may not be enough if you are going to wedding, and definitely not enough for a costume party, but how many trips actually have those events on the itinerary? Probably not many.

Travel Makeup Bag and Routine

Cover FX CC Cream Time Release Tinted Treatment in G Light-Med

For the face, I definitely recommend choosing something with SPF when traveling.

The Cover FX CC Cream is my favorite. It provides a solid medium coverage, and blends into the skin beautifully. It has one of the highest SPF ratings I have seen in a makeup product, which is always nice. When traveling, look for something that blends well using your fingers. Ditching your Beauty Blender saves more space than you’d think!

Update: This product has been discontinued.

Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer in Light Neutral

This concealer is another one that blends easily with your fingers. Win! It has a thin consistency, (so it’s not cakey,) yet the coverage is amazing. If you need more coverage, you can always build it up, but starting with a small amount ensures that things don’t get too messy since we aren’t using brushes today.

For a natural look, try to keep the concealer in the smallest area possible– no need to do the whole triangle-shaped highlight right now. On the flip side, a thin yet pigmented concealer is the perfect multi-tasker for concealing and highlighting.

L’Oréal True Match Super Blendable Powder in W2

Powder is a must for me on trips. This one comes with a sponge applicator for easy, on-the-go touchups.

I tend to get oily, and I find that this pressed powder is the best for controlling my five o’clock shine. Use whatever powder works for you, but try to stick to pressed powders rather than loose. I took a loose powder on an airplane once. It wasn’t pretty.

L’Oréal True Match Super Blendable Powder >> Purchase on Amazon

Sephora Bronzed and Blushing Face Palette

Space saving is always a top priority when traveling, (at least for me,) so I always look for multi-tasking products. This matte blush and bronzer trio is great because you can mix and match the shades to create custom colors for face or eyes. You also have the option to wear it matte or top it with the highlighter to give it some shimmer. You can literally create any look.

This particular palette was limited edition, but there are many great ones out there. The E.l.f Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder in Fiji  is my top alternative.

L’Oréal True Match Lumi Powder Glow Illuminator in Rose

Highlighter is one of those things I will never skip. It can take a full-face look to the next level, or add a bit of something extra to a very minimal makeup look.

I picked this one because it has a good mix of different colors and textures that I can use as cheekbone highlights, brow bone and inner corner highlights, or an allover glow. Plus, the two darker pink shades could also make great all-over lid shades. Just throw your bronzer in your crease and you have a full eye look. Another great multi-tasker.

Maybelline Brow Define + Fill Duo in Deep Brown

This product is a multi-tasker in itself, but you can still get creative with it! When you’re traveling, chances are you will be warm, and the last thing you want is your eyebrows dripping down your face. I just like a pencil in general since I find it easier to use than a pomade, but if you’re a powder gal, this will also work for you. With this product, I feel secure in knowing that when I get off Splash Mountain, my eyebrows will be right where they belong… raised high up in terror on my forehead.

If you’ve been keeping up, you know that I have a tendency to use brow powders as eyeshadows.  So of course I will be using the powder end to deepen my outer corner and crease. You should do it too; the little sponge applicator is calling you. Travel makeup doesn’t get any better than this little thing.

Maybelline Brow Define + Fill Duo >> Purchase on Amazon

Nars Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base

I’m skipping face primer for the sake of simplicity, but eyelid primer is something I can’t go without. Even when I’m not wearing eyeshadow, I smear a bit of this on my lids to prevent the oil from collecting and making my eyes burn. Yes, that is a problem for me. Think about your necessities, and leave behind things that you can live without. For me, that’s usually face primer, (unless I have a sample; more on that below.) What is it for you?

Nars Pro-Prime Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base >> Purchase at Sephora

Sephora Retractable Eyeliner in Waterproof Black

It’s always a good idea to keep a creamy black eyeliner on hand. This one lasts for a long time in the waterline, and also features a smudger and sharpener on the end to add to the versatility. For this look, I just applied it to my waterline and blended it with the smudger, but you could also smudge it onto your upper lash line or use it as a smoky eyeshadow base. Use it anywhere you need to deepen colors, really. The possibilities are endless.

Sephora Retractable Eyeliner in Waterproof Black >> Purchase at Sephora

Maybelline Color Tattoo in Creamy Beige

This is the only eyeshadow I take with me on trips. It is a neutral shade that adds a bit of definition to the lids with minimal effort and no brushes. I tend to get carried away with eyeshadow and it ends up taking me forever.

If this is my only option, then I don’t have to worry about wasting time or space for eyeshadow. Color Tattoos last forever, and when combined with my Nars eyeshadow base, this stuff is basically bulletproof- perfect for long days of fun.

Maybelline Color Tattoo in Creamy Beige >> Purchase on Amazon

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara in Black

I am not super picky about mascara, but I do like this one, plus I happen to have it in a tiny sample size tube, so it takes up even less space! When traveling, try to gather up as many samples and mini-sizes of products as possible. The smaller, the better.

Urban Decay Perversion Mascara >> Purchase at Sephora

Hack alert: Before I go on trips, especially short ones where I want to pack especially light, I make a pit stop at Sephora. For what, you ask? We all know they’re pretty liberal with the samples. I’ll just go in and ask for samples of things like mattifying primer, concealer, or anything else they can squeeze into the little sample jar. I have a tiny amount of product to take with me, plus I get to keep the container for future trips! They’re great little things.

I used all of the products above, plus one of two lip products, which I’ll talk about in a bit, to create the full face, natural look above.

Travel Makeup Bag and Routine

What you need & what you don’t

You only need two lip colors for a typical trip. That’s right,  two.  Not ten, not five, but two.  One for daytime natural, and one for nighttime glam. I chose a mauve and a purple because that’s what I’m into right now, but you can bring whatever colors you like.

Choose one color that you are comfortable wearing everyday, (something you would wear when doing errands around town,) and a more glamorous evening color that you would wear out to a fancy dinner. If your everyday color is bright red, and your fancy dinner color is  Anastasia “Paint,”  (electric blue, for those who don’t know,)   then go for it, just make sure you have those two categories covered.

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in “Patina” and “Chianti”

When I’m traveling, I pretty much want my makeup to take care of itself. Basically, I want to put it on in the morning, and forget about it; I don’t want to have to be worrying about smudges, running, greasiness, or any other makeup catastrophes. That’s why I always use long-wearing liquid lipsticks when I’m traveling.

That way, when I’m wandering around nibbling on churros, ice cream bars, and sipping lemonade, getting lipstick on my chin isn’t a worry. Also, my BF prefers it when I don’t leave behind a ring of lipstick on our shared straw, so there’s that.

To change my look from day to night, all I did was add a touch more blush and change my lipstick from Patina   to   Chianti .

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Patina & Chianti >> Purchase at Sephora

Travel Makeup Bag and Routine

The brushes (or lack thereof)

Now, you must be wondering about the subject of brushes, since I have barely uttered the word so far. I chose much of this makeup for the reason that it is “finger makeup.” There is no way I’m packing my Beauty Blender, only to waste time washing it, during a five day trip. I can live without it for that long. Instead, I chose a CC cream that blends well with my fingers. Same with my sole eyeshadow; just pop it on with the fingers.

If you can manage your entire face with your fingers, then all power to you, but I’m not a fan of cream blushes and bronzers, so I decided to make an exception. I am taking miniature blush and angled bronzer brushes that I got in some random Walmart holiday set, (I’m not sure what they are, but they were cheap and that’s what matters.)

My lack of brushes further lightens my load, and just makes the whole makeup process simpler. I think this is totally the way to go when it comes to travel makeup packing. Give yourself a challenge: how few brushes can you survive with?

Travel Makeup Bag and Routine

It’s not travel makeup without a travel makeup bag

And it all fits compactly in the adorable little bag. Perfecto.

I used to be a major over-packer, like seriously, I would bring my whole house with me if I could. Of course, this meant I packed way more makeup than I needed as well. In order to prevent the  I-have-the-space-so-I’m-gonna-fill-it mentality, I picked a bag that I felt could hold all of the products I really need, and then let the space do the deciding. It it doesn’t fit, it ain’t going. It worked, since I have everything I need sealed snugly in this compact bag.

I recommend hunting down a small-to-medium sized travel makeup bag that you love so much that you couldn’t stand to leave home without it. This bag measures in at 8 inches long at the base and 6.5 inches tall at the peak of the dome, and it is flat when empty. I think this is a reasonably sized makeup bag for a typical vacation that will prevent you from overpacking while still giving you the space you need.

UPDATE 1/25/17:  The bag pictured above is no longer available, but I’ve got a new favorite anyway. I’ve been using the JIARUO Multi-Function Organizer , and I’m loving it! It’s super lightweight and packable, it comes with a brush organizer, it’s amazingly inexpensive, and it comes in a ton of fun patterns. I find it the perfect  size where I can carry a trip’s worth of makeup comfortably without going over board.

JIARUO Multi-Function Organizer >> Purchase on Amazon

That’s all for today!

The 6 Best Tinted Moisturizers to Simplify Your Travel Makeup Routine

Say hello to your new hydration BFF.

For the days where you want to enhance your complexion but don’t want to deal with the full glam look of foundation, tinted moisturizer is the ultimate makeup hack. Whether you’re traveling to an idyllic beach vacation or are about to embark on a multi-day road trip across the states, tinted moisturizer is a must-have in your carry-on bag.

A one-stop shop that eliminates the need to layer moisturizer, sunscreen, and foundation, it is ideal for simplifying your routine and saving space in your makeup bag – which we always love. But before packing your bags, it’s important to keep in mind certain factors such as SPF and finish types so you can feel your best, no matter the destination.

We tested 17 products over the course of six months for a variety of factors, including feel, coverage, and moisturizing ability, to determine our list of top products below.

Best Overall: BareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid and Mineral SPF 30

Buy at Amazon.com

Buy at Target.com

Why We Love It

It applies smoothly and is easily buildable.

What to Consider

It is a bit pricey compared to drugstore varieties.

We love this tinted moisturizer for its silky yet lightweight texture that blends seamlessly into the skin while using minimal product. This three-in-one multi-tasker is a moisturizer, skin tint, and SPF 30, so you can skip some extra steps in your makeup routine — not to mention it includes hyaluronic acid to boost hydration for a dewy, healthy-looking glow no matter if you’re on your second flight of the day or lounging poolside. During testing, we loved that it was easily buildable to help cover blemishes and red spots with a natural finish. Another bonus: it is considered a “clean” beauty product at Sephora, which means it’s free of parabens, phthalates, mineral oils, formaldehyde, and more. Do note it is a bit pricey compared to drugstore varieties, but we would still buy this bottle regardless.

Price at time of publish: $37

The Details: Standard: 1.18 ounces, Mini: 0.5 ounces | Light Coverage | SPF 30 | 20 Shades

Best Coverage: Huda Beauty GloWish Multidew Vegan Skin Tint Foundation

Buy at Hudabeauty.com

Buy at Selfridges.com

It is lightweight and breathable yet left our skin feeling moisturized all day.

It has a dewy finish, so it may not be best for those with oily skin.

The Huda Beauty GloWish Multidew Vegan Skin Tint Foundation is at the top of our list when picking out a tinted moisturizer for a bit of extra coverage. Super lightweight and breathable for long makeup days, this skin-loving moisturizer is formulated with squalane and helps instantly brighten the skin while leaving you with a dewy finish. Though the coverage is light at first application, we found this tinted moisturizer to have the best coverage out of all the products we tested, and it is easily buildable to create your desired look.

Best for Long Travel Days: Smashbox Halo Healthy Glow Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 25

Buy at Nordstrom.com

It is easily buildable to create full coverage without feeling tacky.

The formula is very transferable.

No one wants to stop to touch up their makeup when they’re busy enjoying their travels, which is why this Smashbox tinted moisturizer made it on our list. Super lightweight, this product had the most moisturized feel during testing without feeling tacky or heavy — and its hydrating benefits last up to 24 hours (great for those never-ending flights). This moisturizer is primer-infused for all-day wear with a natural glow, so you don’t have to worry about packing it in your crossbody when galavanting the streets of Europe, and you can skip the extra step of putting on primer before applying makeup. We love this product because it is oil-free, meaning it's suitable for all skin types and likely won’t cause breakouts. However, we did find it easily transferable, so be careful with usage around white clothing or linens.

Best With SPF: Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30

Buy at Bloomingdales.com

It’s lightweight and easy to spread and buff into the skin.

It may not be a good fit for those with acne-prone skin.

When looking for a tinted moisturizer that will have you feeling your best while also protecting you from the sun, this option from Nars is a must-have. Super lightweight and easy to spread into the skin for maximum coverage, this moisturizer proved to be nourishing during our testing period without creasing or settling into fine lines. We love this product for its formulation, which we found to brighten, hydrate, condition, and even out the look of skin. Of course, the built-in SPF 30 is a godsend for protection when traveling and out in the elements, as long as you apply enough of it. Do note that some acne-prone reviewers have commented on breakouts after usage, so this may not be the best fit if you have sensitive skin.

Best Value: L'Oréal Skin Paradise Water-Infused Tinted Moisturizer

Buy at Lorealparisusa.com

It is oil-free, so it won’t clog pores and is suitable for sensitive skin.

It’s not as moisturizing compared to other formulas.

L'Oréal is known for its affordable prices and outstanding quality, and the Skin Paradise Water-Infused Tinted Moisturizer is no exception. Extremely lightweight to the point we felt this product immediately melt into the skin, it is formulated with a 70 percent water-infused blend with aloe vera and witch hazel. Since this is so lightweight, we felt it didn’t feel as moisturizing compared to other products, so if you have dry skin you may want to add a thicker moisturizer before applying. When testing, we loved that this tinted moisturizer provided great coverage to blur the skin and hide imperfections without concealing our freckles.

Price at time of publish: $17

The Details: Size: 1.01 oz | Medium Coverage | SPF 19 | 14 Shades

Best Matte Finish: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Oil Free Natural Skin Perfector SPF 20

Buy at Bergdorfgoodman.com

This provided instant moisturization and even coverage during testing.

The formula can feel a bit tacky.

For the perfect matte finish, this tinted moisturizer from Laura Mercier is the gold standard. Easily blendable into the skin for a seamless finish, we found that it evens out redness and blurs pores while still letting our natural skin shine through. This lightweight formula provides the benefits of makeup, skincare, and SPF all in one step for comfortable, all-day shine control. We were easily able to find a color match through the shade finder, which made selection super easy. On the downside, we did notice a tacky feel upon application, but this wouldn’t stop us from buying the bottle again.

Price at time of publish: $53

The Details: Standard: 1.7 ounces, Mini: 0.85 ounces | Light Coverage | SPF 20 | 20 Shades

Other Tinted Moisturizers We Liked

These are some other tinted moisturizers we tested and still loved, but they didn’t quite earn a spot on our list.

Shiseido Synchro Skin Self-Refreshing Tint SPF 20 : This natural-finish tinted moisturizer feels ultra lightweight, like it’s an extension of your skin. Easy to apply, it helps to lightly blur imperfections. However, it can start to leave the skin feeling dry after a few hours of wear.

Clinique Moisture Surge Sheertint Hydrator Broad Spectrum SPF 25 Tinted Moisturizer : Lightweight and sheer, this moisturizer provides a subtle glow while simultaneously moisturizing skin for up to 12 hours. Depending on preference, coverage can be a bit too sheer, so you may need to apply multiple layers to fully cover dark spots and pimples.

ColourPop Pretty Fresh Hyaluronic Acid Tinted Moisturizer : This cost-efficient pick is lightweight and blends into the skin with ease without feeling greasy or heavy. Coverage is light and can leave sensitive areas such as the T-zone a bit flakey after a few hours of wear. That said, we still loved this product for its breathable feel and would buy it for the affordabloe price point.

Our Testing Process

Our team tested 17 different tinted moisturizers, wearing them several times a week for six months. After making sure that our skin was freshly cleansed, we applied a pea-size amount to the face, using our fingertips to spread and blend. After the initial application, we took notice of how each tinted moisturizer felt on the skin, making sure to note whether it was lightweight, hydrating, greasy, tacky, or comfortable.

To see how the tinted moisturizers would perform in a real-life setting, we wore them for a full day (more than eight hours) and took a long look in the mirror, scanning for flakes or oily patches as well as how well the coverage lasted over time. After removing makeup, we took note of how hydrated our faces felt compared to before putting on the moisturizer.

Tips for Buying Tinted Moisturizers

Consider your skin type.

As with all makeup, your skin type will determine which features you should look for when buying your next tinted moisturizer. Since it already provides an extra layer of hydration, you likely won’t need additional moisturizer, but those with dry skin may want to invest in a product that is thicker in nature to ensure they are getting enough moisture to avoid flakes. If your skin is a bit more oily, you may want to look for an oil-free tinted moisturizer to wick-away any unnecessary build-up.

You’ll also want to be conscious of whether your tinted moisturizer has a matte or dewy finish. Depending on your skin type and preferences, those with oily skin may want to avoid a dewy finish as it could increase the appearance of oil on the skin. For those with acne-prone skin, be sure to look for products that are non-comedogenic , as they will not clog pores and will help to prevent acne.

Think of the weather at your destination

Where you’re traveling to plays a big role in which tinted moisturizer is best to pack in your carry-on. Be sure to consider the weather of your next vacation destination: if you’re traveling to the hot and humid beaches of the Maldives or Miami, you might want to opt-in for something a bit more lightweight. However, if you’re heading to cold and windy Iceland or skiing in Colorado, it is probably best to grab a thicker product to ensure your skin stays moisturized all vacation long.

Be mindful of SPF

SPF is a traveler's best friend, so be sure to check if your tinted moisturizer has an SPF of 15 or more to ensure the best skin protection. Not only is having a moisturizer with SPF important for skin health, but having a product that is an all-in-one is quintessential for streamlining your morning routine when on-the-go — as long as you apply enough of it. Especially if you have mountains to climb and beaches to enjoy, having a product that does it all helps to ensure you’re protected from the elements while also feeling your best. However, don’t forget to reapply SPF throughout the day!

Frequently Asked Questions

What does tinted moisturizer do?

The perfect medium between keeping it bare-faced and applying full-coverage foundation, tinted moisturizer serves to moisturize the skin while simultaneously providing minimal pigment to lightly cover any redness, imperfections, or dark spots. Ideal for a day at the beach or traveling via boat, tinted moisturizer evens out your skin tone without sitting on the surface like foundation does, which helps to reduce the risk of drying out the skin – especially on long travel days!

Can you use tinted moisturizer as foundation?

Yes! You can absolutely use tinted moisturizer as foundation, especially for light-makeup days or when you're looking for a more sheer, natural appearance. However, because it is not foundation, it does absorb much quicker into the skin and is less likely to last throughout the day. If you’re looking for more coverage, you may want to use a traditional foundation.

How do you remove tinted moisturizer?

Though it seems like skin care, tinted moisturizer is actually considered makeup, so you can remove your tinted moisturizer like you do with any makeup product — either with a makeup remover wipe, an oil-based cleansing balm, or a face cleanser.

10 benefits of makeup-free travel besides packing light

by Anne Betts | Mar 7, 2024 | Travel Tips | 0 comments

travel makeup routine

What is your makeup routine while travelling? Does it differ from what you practise at home? Is it more minimalist? Do you incorporate makeup-free days, or do you travel without makeup? By leaving your makeup at home or building in some makeup-free days, you may be surprised by what is revealed when you experience these 10 benefits of makeup-free travel .

Table of Contents

The pandemic changed several habits

Why do people wear makeup, one traveller’s makeup epiphany, 1. it’s healthier, 2. flights are healthier and more comfortable, 3. exposure to fewer bacteria, 4. it saves time, 5. there’s less mess, 6. travel is easier, 7. it’s an opportunity to be less visible as a tourist, 8. it saves money, 9. an opportunity to appreciate your natural beauty, 10. it’s better for the environment.

The pandemic deserves a special mention as it relates to makeup.

Many people skipped their regular makeup routines during lockdowns, working from home, or wearing a mask in public places. And they chose to eliminate or reduce their collections of cosmetics going forward.

For some, it wasn’t a question of simply reducing their makeup routine. It led to life-changing discoveries. In the case of blogger Sunday Riley , she writes about how the pandemic taught her to love her makeup-free face.

Others kept their pre-pandemic routines to feel more normal in abnormal circumstances. I recently reconnected with a former colleague who described her routine of preparing to attend church during the pandemic. She would dress in her finest, apply makeup, and participate in a live stream of her church service alone in her living room. Why? It was her way of demonstrating respect for her church by looking her best and connecting with a less complicated life before the pandemic disrupted it.

These stories got me thinking about the various reasons people wear makeup.

Applying makeup can be enjoyable and relaxing. It offers a creative outlet by choosing cosmetics to match mood, enhance natural features, obscure a skin condition, or create different looks. It’s an artistic form of self-expression. It can reflect your mood on your face; some days call for the brightest lipsticks, or others for a more minimalist approach to enhance your natural features. It might help you feel more comfortable, confident, and ‘put together.’ For others, it represents a part of their daily routine that helps them feel awake and ready to face the day.

It’s also influenced by external pressures from advertising, bloggers, and social media influencers.

While travelling, wearing makeup helps some people feel and look their best. Preserving travel memories with the help of photographs creates a little extra pressure to look good for the camera.

It was in the Facebook group Girls Love Travel that I stumbled across the following post:

Hello, beautiful ladies!!

My boyfriend and I went to Italy in September. I did things differently this time, and I had an epiphany.

I brought my makeup but didn’t wear it at all, and I’ll tell you why.

It started with a long flight from Phoenix through Chicago and Frankfurt to Naples. The flight was at seven in the morning, and I didn’t want to deal with having to reapply my makeup or worry that my mascara would smear when I wore my eye mask on the plane. So, I didn’t wear any.

And you know what? Nobody cared. Nobody noticed.

I’m saying this because I saved myself twenty minutes every day by not having to put makeup on and carry it in my purse so I could always touch it up.

It was quite liberating. Think about yourself and when you look at other people. Do you think someone would be prettier if they had false eyelashes, wore lipstick, or had makeup on? No.

I know we all look at ourselves and think we look better with makeup. I didn’t even think about it after the second day of not wearing it. It wasn’t a priority for me. I was on vacation and wanted to start my day and leave our accommodation to see the country.

My boyfriend never noticed that I wasn’t wearing it. Nobody at the cafés or restaurants noticed, not that they cared or that anyone looked at me for more than a few seconds.

Anyway, it was terrific, not caring if I had any on, and it gave me more room in my purse.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t usually leave the house without it on at home, but it was nice to get up in the morning, take a shower, take five minutes to curl my hair and leave. I never felt ugly or out of place. I was just on vacation.

I’m putting this out there for you who travel a lot and think you must always look like an Instagram model. You don’t.

Enjoy your vacation and don’t worry that you don’t have false eyelashes or eyeliner on. It’s very empowering.

Kathy Danger (r eproduced with permission)

Kathy’s revelation attracted many comments. Many agreed that being on vacation presented an opportunity to adjust a makeup routine. In contrast, others weren’t swayed to reduce or eliminate makeup while travelling. And, of course, those who go makeup-free at all times weighed in.

10 Benefits of makeup-free travel

Makeup-free travel and packing light are complementary pieces. If you’re committed to following a regular makeup routine while travelling, that’s OK. Travel is a gift, and it’s important you enjoy it in a way that works for you.

Are you open to experiencing the benefits of makeup-free travel? it’s about more than lightening your luggage but considering the possibilities that going makeup-free might reveal.

Going makeup-free promotes healthier skin and avoids adverse reactions to the chemicals and toxins that clog pores or cause irritation, inflammation, allergies, and breakouts. A makeup-free break allows your skin to recalibrate, naturally rejuvenate, and produce natural oils vital to healthy skin. Think of it as an opportunity for your face to go on its spa retreat.

Skin therapist Robyn McAlpine says, “Makeup ingredients can be quite occlusive and clog and congest our skin. Going a week without adding any extra stress on our cells through makeup that might not be skin-friendly will have your skin beginning to function in a healthy way.”

Harper’s Bazaar makes a case for a makeup-free flight in Why wearing makeup on flights is bad for your skin. From dehydration to breakouts, a doctor explains why your skin won’t thank you.

During a flight, it’s easier to apply rehydrating products such as a sleeping mask or a facial mist. For example, I love the Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Aloe, Herbs and Rosewater. It’s much more effective when used without makeup.

Also, lubricating eye drops keep eyes moist, help protect them from injury and infection, and decrease symptoms of dry eyes such as burning and itching. It’s most inconvenient if you’re wearing eye makeup and mascara streaks as a result.

Reapplying makeup in a plane’s cramped, unsanitary bathroom isn’t the place to practise skincare. Besides, it’s inconvenient for you and other passengers waiting for access.

Going makeup-free means stepping off the plane, ready for new experiences with a fresh face that’s enjoyed hours of hydration, free from cosmetic constraints.

Do you use a sleep mask while wearing eye makeup? Eyeliner can smudge, and mascara can clump lashes in ways that are difficult to fix.

sleeping-on-a-plane-with-sleep-mask

Bacteria are all around us, and they flourish in creamy and liquid products. They love makeup brushes and sponges, especially those not regularly cleaned. When a makeup brush, sponge, or finger touches your face, you add bacteria to your skin.

Best-after-opening periods of cosmetics are painfully short (like three months for mascara), and many products are kept way beyond expiry dates. These are breeding grounds for bacteria, and viruses can live on lipstick and other products for weeks. For insights, see Are you travelling with expired toiletries? Avoid doing so with these 14 tips .

According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, “Dirty makeup brushes can cause an infection, such as a fungal infection, E. coli, or a staph infection, which can be very serious.”

makeup-brushes-and-sponges

Shopping for the right makeup and cosmetics is time-consuming.

Time is saved to apply makeup, touch up during the day, and remove it at night. Going makeup-free means an earlier, more straightforward start to the day. It eliminates the need to find suitable places to reapply while enjoying the sights. After a long day of travel, it’s one less thing to do before bed and enjoy extra beauty sleep.

Makeup can end up on clothing that can be inconvenient and difficult to remove. Foundation and lipstick stains can be remarkably stubborn.

During a long flight, falling asleep with eyeliner and mascara and then rubbing tired eyes can get messy. What started as a polished look can end up smudged after several hours. You’ll worry less about rubbing your eyes and not looking like a racoon.

When travelling around water, be it rainfall or impromptu swims, there’s less to worry about having makeup run or stress about when there’s an opportunity to reapply.

You can cry, laugh, sweat, or hug others without messing up your makeup or clothing, yours and others.

There’s less to pack and less to carry in a purse or day bag. You won’t need to figure out what makeup needs to go in the ‘liquids bag’ for liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes. It creates more space in your luggage.

bag-of-makeup-products

Also, it means fewer products that can leak or wreak havoc in a travel bag. Have you ever opened your luggage to find a broken powder compact that has exploded over everything? Or liquid foundation has leaked? It’s not a pretty sight and can be disastrous if valuable electronics are affected.

You’ll likely feel more comfortable in all temperatures, conditions, and activities. Some places are too hot, and makeup isn’t compatible with sweat and water activities. Plus, going makeup-free makes it easier to apply and reapply sunscreen.

It elevates your ability to be spontaneous. A spontaneous dip in the ocean? Hiking to a magnificent waterfall and taking a plunge underneath? Catching a glimpse of sunrise without the whirlwind of getting ready?

It’s easier on relationships. When travelling with others, keeping people waiting can negatively impact interpersonal dynamics. I’ve seen posts in travel forums describing how one person’s makeup routine can significantly impact a relationship because of a delayed start to a day of sightseeing.

It eliminates a learning curve about products, their period after opening and expiry dates, and the necessary skills to create a flawless look.

There are many countries where people don’t have access to makeup, can’t afford it, or their customs don’t allow it. In countries and cultures where light or no makeup is the norm, it’s easier to blend in and enjoy a more authentic and immersive cultural experience by interacting with others in their bare-faced, natural state without standing out.

Some cosmetics are costly. Most have a short shelf life. Replacing expired products can be expensive.

According to the medical device researcher and manufacturer Comper , the average woman spends over $15,000 on makeup products in a lifetime. Whew! Imagine how many trips $15,000 could fund by going makeup-free!

In 2011, the first National No Makeup Day was celebrated in the United States. Since then, it has been observed worldwide every year on April 26 to encourage women to go makeup-free. It’s an opportunity for women to challenge society’s beauty standards and appreciate their natural beauty.

makeup-free-travel

In her article, 5 Reasons Why You Should Ditch the Makeup , Ronni Robinson quotes clinical psychologist Aura De Los Santos: “Without makeup, women learn to value themselves for who they are and less for what they have; they create a healthier image of themselves, which is one reason days like ‘No Makeup Day’ can be so empowering. When women identify that their value lies more in who they are than in what they wear and how they look, they change their self-concept and self-esteem, adding healthier values and ideals.”

And you’re not alone. Many celebrities have led or joined the makeup-free movement, including Alicia Keys, Anne Hathaway, Cameron Diaz, and Drew Barrymore. In a Lenny Letter interview , Alicia Keys said, “I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing.”

Going makeup-free, even occasionally, allows you to appreciate your authentic beauty, your real face with its natural lashes without mascara weighing them down, gorgeous freckles, and laugh lines celebrating your past. Or, to quote Alex Grace in her article, Embracing Makeup-free Days, “There is nothing more liberating than being comfortable in your own skin.”

The $48 billion beauty industry has a substantial environmental cost. According to the social justice platform TRVST , packaging amounts to 120 billion units of garbage annually, including plastic, paper, glass, and metals, that ultimately end up in landfills. Also, many products create a demand for natural oil, leading to intensive cultivation that harms natural habitats through deforestation and contaminating soil and water through fertilizer and pesticides. For more information, see Environmental Impact of Cosmetics & Beauty Products.

Opting for makeup-free travel significantly contributes to eco-friendly travel and fewer products cluttering landfills and finding their way into our oceans.

Are you ready to go makeup-free or minimize your makeup routine during your travels? Travelling presents an opportunity to see and experience the world differently, and going makeup-free can make each day feel a little different.

Distancing yourself from home-based routines can be liberating. Travel is an opportunity to physically and mentally detox from wearing makeup and as a result, you may discover that your skin is healthier and more vibrant than ever.

The skincare guru who introduced the '10-step Korean skincare routine' to the world busts K-beauty myths

If you subscribe to the 10-step Korean skincare routine and copped a flawless mien as a result then you have Charlotte Cho to thank.

Over a decade ago, when Cho co-founded Soko Glam – kind of like the online version of Olive Young in North America – she shared with American beauty editors that her friends in her motherland Seoul would have 10 beauty items on their vanity.

The press swiftly interpreted that to be the 10-step Korean routine and years later, many still identify with that as the holy grail.

Besides helming one of the biggest purveyors of K-beauty in the US, the go-getting 38-year-old tapped into her "jeong" (the Korean word for a feeling of loyalty and strong connection to people and place) of her East-meets-West background to develop a K-beauty-inspired brand of her own.

In Cho’s own words, Then I Met You (TIMY) is rooted in “Korean ritualistic beliefs but with a Western kick”.

travel makeup routine

Cho built TIMY organically, mostly by word of mouth and intentionally kept the brand’s progression slow but steady. “It’s been five years and I only have nine products,” Cho shared introspectively.

The Living Cleansing Balm that “makes you look forward to taking off your makeup” remains the bestseller. The Renewing Rich Beauty cream picked up a Popsugar beauty award while the Rose Resurfacing Facial Mask is an Elle Editor’s Choice favourite.

Sephora saw TIMY’s potential from the get-go and after five long years of courtship, shoppers will finally be able to shop the brand at Sephora’s Asian stores in Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand from April.

CNA Lifestyle caught up with Cho who was in Singapore for Sephora’s Open House for answers surrounding the common myths of K-beauty.

HOW THE 10-STEP KOREAN SKINCARE ROUTINE CAME ABOUT

“There’s a misconception with the Korean 10-step routine,” said Cho. “It’s really not meant to be every morning and every night. It’s more about explaining what the potential steps are.”

There’s a misconception with the Korean 10-step routine.

So how did the 10-step Korean skincare routine come about then?

“When Soko Glam first started and I was talking to all the American beauty editors. I told them about how my friends in Korea would have 10 products on their vanity and so the editors went, ‘Oh, so like 10 steps?’ and that quickly became viral,” recalled Cho with a chuckle.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Charlotte Cho 샬롯조 (@charlottejcho)

“I think the virality came from the fact that it was so jarring that anyone would do 10 steps. But I'm glad it made that effect because it got the message across. And it helped educate people. Because if you're a person who did not do any skincare, and then suddenly you are cleansing properly and hydrating properly, you're going to see results.”

CHO'S OWN SKINCARE ROUTINE

A busy business owner and mother of two, Cho often finds herself strapped for time. The tedious 10-step would be too much of an ask. She divulged that her skincare routine is a lot simpler, but no less effective of course.

Her five-step routine consists of the following:

1. Double cleanse. “I saw the biggest change in my skincare routine through double cleansing. I used to have a lot of acne, persistent hormonal acne and double cleansing helped clear it up.”

2. Essence. “The essence really improved the hydration levels of my skin. It’s got a light silky texture that is very layer-able like a sheet mask but without the sheet mask.”

travel makeup routine

3. Chemical exfoliant. “Using a chemical exfoliant regularly to get rid of dead skin cells and help my skin look more evenly toned.”

4. Moisturise. “I use a moisturiser to lock in all the hydration.”

5. Sunscreen. “I wear sunscreen during the day... I like the idea of putting something on the skin that looks a little bit glowy, but it’s not really makeup."

WHAT IS REALLY AT THE HEART OF K-BEAUTY?

“It’s about taking care of your skin first, before covering it up with makeup. That’s the heart of Korean beauty,” Cho broke it down.

The goal is skin-first, to be able to go out without any makeup, that’s something to celebrate.

“The goal is skin-first, to be able to go out without any makeup, that’s something to celebrate. I love this skin-first philosophy that Koreans have ingrained in their culture. I’m not saying don’t wear make-up but your make-up will look better if your skin is in a great healthy shape. And that’s what I wanted to share with everything that I do.”

According to Cho, the Korean way to take care of your skin begins with finding the right skincare for your skin type, staying out of direct sunlight, wearing sunscreen, regular exfoliation and even going to a bathhouse (or jjimjilbang) that she likened to a gym for your skin.

WHAT IS THE "RIGHT" SKINCARE?

Cho’s advice is plain and simple. “I think you have to be educated. You have to know how to read the label on the back and know what is suitable for your skin type.”

She went on to add: “Skincare is trial and error because every person has different skin types. Some people might think that I don't need to put a moisturiser on because I'm already oily. But actually, you may be severely dehydrated because you just aren't putting the right humectants in your routine that are going to penetrate into your skin.”

You have to know how to read the label on the back and know what is suitable for your skin type.

Finding the correct skincare that works for your skin is paramount, regardless of gender.

“The difference between male and female skin is just miniscule,” Cho said matter-of-factly. “It's just they have larger hair follicles because they have facial hair. And they also might have a little bit more larger pores than women. But in general skin is skin.”

WHY K-BEAUTY IS PARTICULARLY GOOD FOR SENSITIVE SKIN

“Koreans have a lot of pollution issues such as yellow dust phenomenon that causes a lot of irritation. So even if you’re not born with sensitive skin, it’s environmental and the Korean cosmetic companies identify and understand that it is an issue for the population and they help address it in their skincare,” Cho shared.

Whether you identify with having sensitive skin or are plagued by environmental stressors that can lead to sensitivity, targeted skincare designed to alleviate this skincare woe can’t hurt.

“I noticed at Soko Glam that we have people from different places coming to try Korean beauty for the first time and they’re amazed at the results. They’re like, 'I tried everything, expensive products, cheap products, and it’s only Korean beauty that is really good for my skin'.”

IS KOREAN SKINCARE NECESSARILY BETTER?

“It really is a case of sophistication of Korean brands in general,” said Cho in response to whether Korean brands reigns over the Western counterparts.

“The big difference is the gentler Korean approach that is about prevention versus the West’s desire to turn back the hands of time which you have to attack your skin for. Korean skincare is about persistence and consistency that deliver sustainable results over time.”

But where does that leave time-strapped individuals? Cho agreed that Korean skincare can sometimes be too gentle and that’s where K-beauty inspired innovations like TIMY comes in.

“TIMY has both the American and Korean side of me. I love hydration but I also want a little bit of kick in my skincare routine. For example, The Giving Essence is formulated with 5 per cent niacinamide because I want it to really have that skin brightening effect. It’s not going be bad for your skin, it’s just the right amount to give it more than just hydration.”

WHAT’S HOT IN K-BEAUTY RIGHT NOW

“Beauty is very cyclical, what’s old is new again with skincare. Snail mucin is way back in again and it’s back through TikTok, among the Gen Z communities,” pointed out Cho.

Korean sunscreens have a large following because of their very lightweight textures, she also said. “I wish I could use those filters in the US, but you can’t because they’re not approved which is why American sunscreens are thick and pasty.”

Toner pads are also back for those who want to multi-mask. “People don’t necessarily want to put on an entire sheet mask, they’re more about targeting areas, depending on what they need.”

Cho also highlighted that Korean beauty has taken a more minimal approach, encouraging fusion of steps. “The Mixsoon Bean Essence is also very viral right now. It hydrates but also exfoliates if you rub it vigorously enough that helps slough off dead skin cells that makes your skin very glassy.”

Then I Met You will be available at Sephora in Singapore from Apr 18.
