5 Ways to Get a Hotel Reservation for Visa Application (3 Free and 2 Paid)

Updated: September 8, 2023

Hotel reservation for visa application

A hotel reservation is an essential document for tourist visas. It serves as proof of accommodation for the visa application. A hotel reservation for visa can be obtained from any booking website, with or without paying the full price.

Embassies and consulates often refer to a hotel reservation as:

  • Proof of accommodation
  • Hotel booking
  • Hotel itinerary
  • Hotel voucher

All these terms basically mean the same thing, hotel reservation.

In this article, you will learn everything about hotel reservation for visa and how to obtain one for your visa application.

What is a hotel reservation for visa?

A hotel reservation for visa is a booking made at a hotel in your name that can be submitted as proof of accommodation for visa application. This reservation can be paid or unpaid and must be verifiable if necessary.

Your hotel booking must be active during the entire period of the visa process. In the event of verification by the embassy, the hotel must be able to confirm that there is an active booking in their system. The embassy may refuse your visa if they cannot validate your hotel reservation.

Why do embassies ask for a hotel itinerary?

Embassies and consulates ask for hotel reservations primarily to understand your itinerary. Embassies can also assess your intentions for the trip from your hotel reservations.

Hotel bookings enable the consulates to understand your itinerary, places you plan to visit and the number of days you plan to stay in the country. Using this information, they can assess the purpose and intention of your trip.

Affordability

Embassies can also assess the affordability of the trip based on your proof of accommodation. If your hotel accommodation does not correlate with your financial capacity, it raises questions.

Authenticity

Hotel reservations can give away any abnormalities in your visa application. A genuine traveler would do the research and book their hotels. The booking would look natural and convincing.

Hotel bookings in unpopular areas can alert visa officers to take a closer look at the purpose and intention of your trip.

How to get hotel reservation for visa?

You can get hotel accommodation for visa from any hotel booking website. Some websites allow you to get free hotel bookings and some fully refundable ones. Below, I will walk you through 5 ways to get a hotel reservation.

01. Pay-At-The-Hotel Booking [Free option]

Pay at the hotel booking on Booking.com

Some booking sites allow you to book a hotel without requiring any prepayment. Such bookings are referred to as pay-at-the-hotel or pay-when-you-stay bookings. These bookings do not require any payment or credit card information.

You can get a completely free hotel reservation for visa using this option.

Recommended websites:

  • Booking.com | Free cancellation: No prepayment needed
  • Expedia | Fully refundable: Reserve now, pay later
  • Agoda | Free cancellation: Pay at the hotel
  • Orbitz | Fully refundable: Reserve now, pay later
  • Trip.com | Free cancellation: Pay at hotel
  • This option is completely free of charge and does not require a credit or debit card.
  • Even though these bookings are free, you must still make sure to cancel them.

NOTE Not all bookings without prepayment are cancellable. Read the description carefully when making a hotel booking for visa application. The booking description must say “free cancellation” along with “no prepayment”, “pay at the hotel” or “pay when you stay”.

02. Partial Deposit Hotel Booking [Free and Paid option]

Refundable deposit booking on Hostelworld

Some booking sites let you book a hotel or hostel by paying a small deposit upfront. You pay about 15-20% of the booking as a deposit. The deposit can be refundable to non-refundable.

When you cancel the booking, you will get a full refund of your deposit if it’s refundable.

  • HostelWorld | Payable at booking: 15% refundable deposit with free cancellation (*Free option)
  • Agoda | Freeze price: 12-15% non-refundable deposit to hold for 7 days (*Paid option)
  • Even if you forget to cancel in time, the resulting loss from the booking would be small.
  • You must remember to cancel the hostel reservation within the cancellation period. Otherwise, your deposit will not be refunded.

03. Fully Refundable Hotel Booking [Free option]

Fully refundable hotels on Kayak

Pretty much every hotel booking website offers fully refundable booking options these days. You would need a credit or debit card to book such hotels. In the event of cancellation, you will get a full refund of the money spent on the booking.

  • Expedia | Fully refundable
  • Booking.com | Free cancellation
  • Agoda | Free cancellation
  • Orbitz | Fully refundable
  • Priceline | Flexible cancellation
  • Trip.com | Free cancellation

Recommended hotel search engines:

  • Kayak | Compares and finds the cheapest refundable hotels
  • Skyscanner | Compares and finds the cheapest refundable hotels
  • Fully refundable hotel bookings are fully-paid and confirmed hotel bookings. There is no need to worry about the consulate verifying its authenticity.
  • If you fail to cancel in time, your booking is deemed noncancellable and you cannot claim a refund.
  • You must keep the credit or debit card used for the booking active to receive your refund.

04. Non-Refundable Hotel Booking [Paid option]

Non-refundable hotels on Orbitz

If you come across a good hotel deal that you cannot pass up, then you can consider booking a refundable hotel for your visa.

I suggest booking a non-refundable hotel only if you are one hundred percent certain that your visa application will be approved.

  • Expedia | Non-refundable
  • Booking.com | Non-refundable
  • Agoda | Non-refundable
  • Orbitz | Non-refundable
  • Priceline | Non-refundable
  • Trip.com | Non-refundable

Recommended search engines for non-refundable hotels:

  • Kayak | Compares and finds best deals on hotels (non-refundable)
  • Skyscanner | Compares and finds best deals on hotels (non-refundable)
  • Non-refundable hotel bookings are fully-paid and confirmed hotel bookings. There is no need to worry about the consulate verifying its authenticity.
  • Booking a non-refundable hotel early on would get you a good deal on the hotel than booking it after your visa approval.
  • In the event of visa refusal, you will risk losing the money spent on the non-refundable hotel booking.
  • Hotels, booking websites and embassies do not consider visa refusal as a valid reason for hotel booking cancellations and refund claims.

05. Dummy Hotel Booking [Paid option]

dummyticket.com buy ticket

There are online travel agents offering proof of accommodation for visa purposes for a nominal fee. Using these agents, you can get a dummy hotel reservation for visa application valid for 2-3 weeks.

These agents can book a hotel on your behalf and cancel after its validity period, which is usually 2-3 weeks. You will have to provide them with the city, travel dates and visa details. They will book the hotel for you and send the hotel confirmation letter by email.

Recommended agent:

  • Dummy Ticket | Price $20 USD | Hotel booking valid for 2-3 weeks
  • You can conveniently get a dummy hotel booking for visa for a nominal fee.
  • This type of dummy hotel reservation works for all visas including Schengen visas.
  • There is no need to remember to cancel the booking as the agent cancels the booking after its validity, usually after 2-3 weeks.
  • After you receive your hotel booking, there won’t be a record of your booking on the agent’s website. The only way to verify the authenticity of the booking is to contact the hotel.
  • Even though the agents promise a 2-3 week validity, there is no guarantee the bookings can stay valid that long.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do embassies check hotel reservation.

Yes, the embassies can check the hotel reservation if they need to. Your hotel booking for visa must be verifiable. You must book the hotels on a reliable booking website or directly from the hotel. This way, if the embassy contacts the hotel, they will be able to confirm your booking.

Do you need hotel reservation for Schengen visa?

Yes, you would need a hotel reservation for Schengen visa. Proof of accommodation is a mandatory document for the Schengen visa application. You can book pay-at-the-hotel or refundable hotels for your Schengen visa from websites such as Booking.com, Expedia or Orbitz.

Can I use Booking.com for Schengen visa?

Yes, you can use Booking.com for Schengen visa. Hotels booked on Booking.com are accepted as proof of accommodation for Schengen visa application. If you prefer not to pay upfront, you can book any hotel with no prepayment or free cancellation option.

Is hotel booking required for US visa?

No, hotel bookings are not required for US visa. US embassies discontinued asking for hotel bookings and flight tickets. You do not need to book any hotel for US visa. In your DS-160, you can simply mention the name and address of the hotel you plan to stay in the US. But you do not need to book that hotel for the visa.

Can I use a fake hotel reservation for visa?

Embassies can verify the authenticity of your hotel reservations. Using fake hotel reservations can land you in trouble. You can get your visa refused or a permanent ban due to falsified documents.

A hotel reservation is an essential document for tourist visa applications. You can obtain a hotel reservation from any hotel booking website. Most hotel booking websites offer hotel bookings without any prepayment. Booking hotels without any prepayment is the most sensible way to get a hotel booking for your visa. In the event of visa refusal, you will not lose money spent on the hotel.

Quick Points: Book through Visa Signature Hotels for elite-like perks

Eric Rosen

Update : Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

Although we cover loyalty programs and credit cards in-depth on TPG every day, sometimes you just want a snippet of useful information that you can put into action on the fly. That's why we launched the series Quick Points . Every week, we'll highlight a new or easily forgotten tip that can help you travel more for less.

Hotel elite status can come with excellent benefits, like room upgrades, free breakfast , late checkout and more. But sometimes it's not possible to enjoy those perks on a trip.

Perhaps you don't stay enough with a specific chain to earn status in the first place, or you don't carry a hotel credit card that confers it automatically. Maybe you have status with one chain but need to stay at another for a particular trip. Or you could be more interested in checking out boutique hotels wherever you travel rather than those that are part of a larger company.

There are plenty of reasons hotel status might not come in handy for each and every trip you take. But fear not, you might still be able to enjoy elite-like benefits by booking your stay through Visa Signature Hotels .

For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .

What is Visa Signature Hotels?

travel visa hotel

Visa Signature Hotels is a travel booking portal specifically for those who carry a Visa Signature credit card. It's kind of like American Express' The Hotel Collection , or Mastercard's Luxury Hotels & Resorts.

Related: The best ways to book hotels through online travel agencies and bank portals

Visa Signature Hotels benefits

If you have a Visa Signature card, you're eligible to book stays through the portal at over 900 luxury hotels worldwide and enjoy benefits that include:

  • A best available rate guarantee (this is temporarily unavailable, but the rates are typically similar to what you'll find through other booking channels).
  • Automatic room upgrade upon arrival, based on availability.
  • Complimentary daily breakfast for two.
  • $25 food and beverage credit.
  • Complimentary in-room Wi-Fi.
  • Late checkout upon request.

These benefits are basically equivalent to mid- or top-tier status with most hotel programs. The breakfast benefit alone can be worth $100 per day, depending on where you stay, and the $25 food and beverage credit should at least cover a drink or two, while room upgrades can be worth hundreds of dollars per stay.

Just note that if you have a Visa Infinite card, such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve or the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, you might be entitled to even richer benefits by booking through the Visa Infinite Hotels portal , though fewer (and usually higher-end) hotels are part of that program.

travel visa hotel

Pros and cons of booking through Visa Signature Hotels

Sounds like a fantastic deal, right? It mostly is. You just need to keep a couple of things in mind.

First, when you book through Visa Signature Hotels, you sometimes won't be eligible to earn points or stay credits toward elite status if you are booking with a major hotel chain such as Marriott or Hilton.

If you're not terribly interested in status, that might not mean much since you're enjoying the perks of it anyway.

Even if you do have elite perks with one hotel loyalty program, you can leverage Visa Signature Hotels to enjoy similar benefits with another major hotel group and see how you like them. Maybe it'll have you rethinking your loyalty strategy.

Also, note that despite the usual best rate guarantee, booking through Visa Signature Hotels won't always be the cheapest option. This is because special packages and member rates, which are sometimes lower than the standard rate, aren't available through the portal. However, the perks you'll receive will likely make up for any price difference.

Visa Signature credit cards

So now the only question that remains is whether you actually have a Visa Signature credit card.

If you're not sure, look at your physical card and see if it has the Visa Signature logo somewhere on it. If it does, you're in luck.

Otherwise, here are a few of the most popular Visa Signature credit cards currently available.

Bottom line

Although hotel elite status is nice, it's not always possible to capitalize upon it with each and every stay. If you have a Visa Signature credit card, though, you might be able to enjoy elite-like benefits while staying at hotels that aren't part of your usual loyalty rounds, such as boutique properties or those that are part of chains you don't normally patronize.

Check your cadre of cards to see if you are carrying any Visa Signature-branded ones. If you are, consider booking through the Visa Signature Hotels portal to enjoy perks like on-property credits and free breakfast that will help you enjoy your stay that much more, without having to jump through any elite status hoops.

Invitation Letter from a Friend in Visa Applications

One of the requirements for obtaining a Schengen visa is to provide proof of accommodation for the duration of your stay. This can be a hotel reservation, a rental agreement, or a letter of invitation from a host. In this blog post, we’ll go over everything you need to know about providing proof of accommodation for your Schengen visa application.

Points to considers:

  • Types of accommodation proof: As mentioned above, hotel reservations, rental agreements, and letters of invitation are all valid forms of proof of accommodation. It’s important to note that the reservation or agreement should cover the entire duration of your stay in the Schengen area .
  • What to include in your accommodation proof: Your proof of accommodation should include your name, the dates of your stay, the address of the accommodation, and the contact details of the accommodation provider.
  • Other considerations: It’s a good idea to make sure your accommodation proof is from a reputable source, as the embassy or consulate may follow up with the accommodation provider to verify the reservation. If you’re staying with a friend or family member, they may need to provide additional documentation, such as a copy of their passport or residency permit.
Providing proof of accommodation is an important step in the Schengen visa process, as it demonstrates that you have a place to stay during your visit to the area. Make sure to choose a valid form of accommodation proof that covers the entire duration of your stay, and include all necessary details such as your name, dates of stay, and accommodation address. With these tips in mind, you’ll be on your way to a successful Schengen visa application .

What are the different types of proof of accommodation for visa applications?

Some common types of accommodation proof that may be accepted for a visa application:

  • Hotel booking confirmation
  • Hostel booking confirmation
  • Vacation rental booking confirmation (e.g. Airbnb, VRBO)
  • Confirmation of timeshare or vacation ownership
  • Letter of invitation from a friend or family member confirming accommodation
  • Proof of residence or rental agreement
  • Travel itinerary with accommodation details
  • Confirmation of group tour arrangements with accommodation included
  • Bank statement or credit card statement showing recent hotel or rental payments
  • Letter from a business or conference organizer confirming accommodation arrangements
  • Certificate of stay from a previous hotel or rental property
  • Other forms of documentation that prove you have arranged for accommodation during your trip

Note that the specific requirements may vary depending on the country and type of visa you are applying for. It’s important to check with the relevant embassy or consulate for their specific requirements.

Can I Make a Fake Hotel Reservation for Schengen Visa?

It is not recommended to make a fake hotel reservation for a Schengen visa application, as it is considered fraudulent and can lead to serious consequences, such as the rejection of your visa application, being banned from entering the Schengen area, or even facing legal charges.

It is essential to provide genuine proof of accommodation, such as hotel reservations or a letter of invitation from a host, to demonstrate that you have a place to stay during your trip. You can also provide other forms of proof, such as rental agreements, home-stay confirmations, or proof of ownership of a property.

If you do not have a confirmed booking yet, you can make a provisional booking that is cancelable without penalty. Alternatively, you can use third-party reservation services that offer free cancellations or pay a small fee for a flexible booking.

In summary, it is not worth risking your visa application and your reputation by submitting a fake hotel reservation. It is better to provide genuine proof of accommodation or make a provisional booking that can be easily canceled.

Do We Need To Provide A More Formal Receipt On Hotel Letterhead OR Can We Provide Email Confirmation?

When applying for a Schengen visa, applicants are typically required to provide proof of accommodation. This can take various forms, such as a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from a friend or family member. As for the format of the proof of accommodation, there is no one-size-fits-all answer.

In general, the embassy or consulate where you’re applying will provide guidelines on what they consider acceptable proof of accommodation. Some may require a formal receipt on hotel letterhead, while others may accept an email confirmation or even a booking through a third-party website. It’s important to carefully review the requirements for your specific application and provide the necessary documentation in the appropriate format.

If you’re unsure about what is required or have any questions about the application process , it’s always best to contact the embassy or consulate directly or consult with a reputable travel agency or visa service. By ensuring that you have the correct documentation and format for your proof of accommodation, you can help to increase your chances of a successful visa application.

What Is A Dummy Hotel Booking For the Schengen Visa?

A dummy hotel booking is a reservation made with a hotel that does not require any payment, and is often used for visa applications. This type of booking is not a real reservation, and cannot be cancelled or modified. It is important to note that providing a fake hotel booking is illegal and can result in serious consequences, including being denied a visa or even being banned from entering a country.

Instead of providing a fake hotel booking, it is recommended to make a genuine reservation with a hotel that offers a flexible cancellation policy. This way, you can provide proof of accommodation for your visa application without the risk of providing false information. Some hotels may also offer a letter on their official letterhead confirming your reservation, which can be submitted as part of your visa application.

In summary, while a dummy hotel booking may seem like an easy solution for a visa application, it is not a legal or recommended option. It is best to make a genuine hotel reservation with a flexible cancellation policy or obtain a confirmation letter from the hotel.

Do I Have To Confirm My Hotel Booking?

When applying for a Schengen visa, you will be required to provide proof of accommodation for the duration of your stay in the Schengen Area. This can be in the form of a confirmed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from a host. It is important to note that a “dummy” or fake hotel reservation is not acceptable and can result in your visa application being rejected.

In terms of confirming your hotel booking, it depends on the specific requirements of the embassy or consulate where you are applying. Some may accept email confirmations, while others may require a more formal receipt on hotel letterhead. It is important to carefully review the application requirements and contact the embassy or consulate if you have any questions.

Overall, it is essential to provide accurate and truthful information in your visa application, including your proof of accommodation. Falsifying information can result in serious consequences, including being banned from entering the Schengen Area in the future.

Can I Get An Actual Hotel Booking For Schengen Visa Application Without Paying?

Yes, there are some ways to obtain a hotel booking confirmation without paying upfront, such as making a refundable reservation or booking with a hotel that offers a free cancellation policy.

One option is to make a refundable reservation, which allows you to reserve a hotel room without paying upfront. This means that you can cancel the reservation and receive a full refund if necessary. However, it’s important to note that some hotels may charge a cancellation fee or require a certain amount of notice before canceling a reservation. It’s important to read the terms and conditions carefully before making a reservation.

Another option is to book with a hotel that offers a free cancellation policy. This means that you can cancel your reservation without penalty up to a certain date, usually a few days before your scheduled arrival. This can be a good option if you’re not sure of your travel plans or if you want to keep your options open.

In summary, while it’s not possible to get an actual hotel booking for Schengen visa application without paying, you can make a refundable reservation or book with a hotel that offers a free cancellation policy. It’s important to read the terms and conditions carefully and to ensure that the reservation meets the requirements of the visa application.

What is the process to obtain a hotel booking confirmation letter for a visa application?

To obtain a hotel booking confirmation letter for a visa application, you will need to make a reservation at a hotel or through a booking platform. Many hotels and booking platforms provide a confirmation letter upon booking, which can be used as proof of accommodation during the visa application process.

Alternatively, you can also request a confirmation letter from the hotel or booking platform after making the reservation. This can be done via email or by contacting the customer service department. In most cases, the hotel or booking platform will provide the confirmation letter free of charge.

When requesting a confirmation letter, ensure that it includes the relevant details such as the name and address of the hotel, dates of stay, and the names of the guests. It is also important to ensure that the confirmation letter is on official letterhead and includes the signature of an authorized representative of the hotel or booking platform.

Visitor Visa

Visa Waiver Program

Travel Without a Visa

Citizens of Canada and Bermuda

Generally, a citizen of a foreign country who wishes to enter the United States must first obtain a visa, either a nonimmigrant visa for a temporary stay, or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. Visitor visas are nonimmigrant visas for persons who want to enter the United States temporarily for business (visa category B-1), for tourism (visa category B-2), or for a combination of both purposes (B-1/B-2).

Here are some examples of activities permitted with a visitor visa:

Business (B-1)

  • Consult with business associates
  • Attend a scientific, educational, professional, or business convention or conference
  • Settle an estate
  • Negotiate a contract

Tourism (B-2)

  • Vacation (holiday)
  • Visit with friends or relatives
  • Medical treatment
  • Participation in social events hosted by fraternal, social, or service organizations
  • Participation by amateurs in musical, sports, or similar events or contests, if not being paid for participating
  • Enrollment in a short recreational course of study, not for credit toward a degree (for example, a two-day cooking class while on vacation)

Travel Purposes Not Permitted On Visitor Visas

These are some examples of activities that require different categories of visas and cannot be done while on a visitor visa:

  • Paid performances, or any professional performance before a paying audience
  • Arrival as a crewmember on a ship or aircraft
  • Work as foreign press, in radio, film, print journalism, or other information media
  • Permanent residence in the United States

Visitor visas will also not be issued for birth tourism (travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States to obtain U.S. citizenship for their child).

How to Apply

There are several steps to apply for a visa. The order of these steps and how you complete them may vary by U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Please consult the instructions on the  U.S. Embassy or Consulate website .

Complete the Online Visa Application

  • Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application, Form DS-160 – Learn more about completing the DS-160 . You must: 1) complete the online visa application and 2) print the application form confirmation page to bring to your interview.
  • Photo – You will upload your photo while completing the online Form DS-160. Your photo must be in the format explained in the Photograph Requirements .

Schedule an Interview

Interviews are generally required for visa applicants with certain limited exceptions below. Consular officers may require an interview of any visa applicant.

You should schedule an appointment for your visa interview at the  U.S. Embassy or Consulate  in the country where you live. You may schedule your interview at another U.S. Embassy or Consulate, but be aware that it may be more difficult to qualify for a visa outside of the country where you live.

Wait times for interview appointments vary by location, season, and visa category, so you should apply for your visa early. Review the interview wait time for the location where you will apply:

Appointment Wait Time

Check the estimated wait time for a nonimmigrant visa interview appointment at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

Note: Please check the individual Embassy or Consulate website to determine if your case is eligible for a waiver of the in-person interview.

Applicants scheduling visa appointments in a location different from their place of residence should check post websites for nonresident wait times.

Select a U.S. Embassy or Consulate:

Prepare for your interview.

  • Fees - Pay the non-refundable visa application fee , if you are required to pay it before your interview. If your visa is approved, you may also need to pay a visa issuance fee, if applicable to your nationality. Fee information is provided below:

Select your nationality to see Issuance Fee

  • Review the instructions available on the website of the  U.S. Embassy or Consulate  where you will apply to learn more about fee payment.

Gather Required Documentation

Gather and prepare the following required documents before your visa interview:

  • Passport valid for travel to the United States – Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your period of stay in the United States (unless exempt by country-specific agreements ). Each individual who needs a visa must submit a separate application, including any family members listed in your passport.
  • Nonimmigrant Visa Application, Form DS-160 confirmation page.
  • Application fee payment receipt, if you are required to pay before your interview.
  • Photo – You will upload your photo while completing the online Form DS-160. If the photo upload fails, you must bring one printed photo in the format explained in the Photograph Requirements .

Additional Documentation May Be Required

Review the instructions for how to apply for a visa on the website of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will apply. Additional documents may be requested to establish if you are qualified. For example, additional requested documents may include evidence of:

  • The purpose of your trip,
  • Your intent to depart the United States after your trip, and/or
  • Your ability to pay all costs of the trip.

Evidence of your employment and/or your family ties may be sufficient to show the purpose of your trip and your intent to return to your home country. If you cannot cover all the costs for your trip, you may show evidence that another person will cover some or all costs for your trip.

Note:  Visa applicants must qualify on the basis of the applicant's residence and ties abroad, rather than assurances from U.S. family and friends. A letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support is not needed to apply for a visitor visa. If you choose to bring a letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support to your interview, please remember it is not one of the factors used in determining whether to issue or deny the visa.

Attend Your Visa Interview

A consular officer will interview you to determine whether you are qualified to receive a visitor visa. You must establish that you meet the requirements under U.S. law to receive a visa.   Ink-free, digital fingerprint scans are taken as part of the application process. They are usually taken during your interview, but this varies based on location.

After your visa interview, the consular officer may determine that your application requires further  administrative processing .  The consular officer will inform you if this required.

After the visa is approved, you may need to pay a visa issuance fee (if applicable to your nationality), and make arrangements for the return of the passport and visa to you.  Review the  visa processing times  to learn more.

Entering the United States

A visa allows a foreign citizen to travel to a U.S. port-of-entry (generally an airport) and request permission to enter the United States. A visa does not guarantee entry into the United States. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials at the port-of-entry have authority to permit or deny admission to the United States. If you are allowed to enter the United States, the CBP official will provide an admission stamp or a paper Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Record. Learn more about admissions and entry requirements, restrictions about bringing food, agricultural products, and other restricted/prohibited goods, and more by reviewing the CBP website .

Extending Your Stay

See  Extend Your Stay  on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website to learn about requesting to extend your stay beyond the date indicated on your admission stamp or paper Form I-94.

Failure to depart the United States on time will result in being  out of status . Under U.S. law, visas of individuals who are out of status are automatically voided ( Section 222(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act ).  Any multiple entry visa that was voided due to being out of status will not be valid for future entries into the United States.

Failure to depart the United States on time may also result in you being ineligible for visas in the future. Review  Visa Denials  and  Ineligibilities and Waivers: Laws  to learn more.

Change of Status

If your plans change while in the United States (for example, you marry a U.S. citizen or receive an offer of employment), you may be able to request a change in your nonimmigrant status to another category through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). See  Change My Nonimmigrant Status  on the USCIS website to learn more.

While you are in the United States, receiving a change of status from USCIS does not require you to apply for a new visa.  However, once you depart the United States you must apply for a new visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the appropriate category for your travel.

Additional Information

  • An individual on a visitor visa (B1/B2) is not permitted to accept employment or work in the United States.
  • There is no guarantee you will be issued a visa. Do not make final travel plans or buy tickets until you have a visa.
  • A valid U.S. visa in an expired passport is still valid. Unless canceled or revoked, a visa is valid until its expiration date. If you have a valid visa in your expired passport, do not remove it from your expired passport. You may use your valid visa in your expired passport along with a new valid passport for travel and admission to the United States.

Travel for Medical Treatment

If you are seeking medical treatment in the United States, the consular officer may ask for further documents at your visa interview, which may include:

  • Medical diagnosis from a local physician, explaining the nature of the ailment and the reason you need treatment in the United States.
  • Letter from a physician or medical facility in the United States, stating they are willing to treat your specific ailment and detailing the projected length and cost of treatment (including doctors’ fees, hospitalization fees, and all medical-related expenses).
  • Proof that your transportation, medical, and living expenses in the United States will be paid. This may be in the form of bank or other statements of income/savings or certified copies of income tax returns (either yours or the person or organization paying for your treatment).

Visitor Visas for Personal or Domestic Employees (B-1)

You may apply for a B-1 visitor visa to work in the United States as a personal or domestic employee for your employer in limited situations. You may work in the United States on a visitor visa if your employer is:

  • A U.S. citizen who has a permanent home or is stationed in a foreign country, but is visiting or is assigned to the United States temporarily; or
  • A foreign citizen who is in the United States on one of the following nonimmigrant visa categories:  B, E, F, H, I, J, L, M, O, P, or Q.

Learn more about your rights in the United States and protection available to you by reading the Legal Rights and Protections pamphlet.

Visa Renewal

Whether you are applying for the first time or renewing your visa, you will use the same application process (please review How to Apply , above). Some applicants seeking to renew their visas in certain visa classes may be eligible for the Interview Waiver (IW) which allows qualified individuals to apply for visa renewals without being interviewed in person by a U.S. consular officer. Review the instructions on the website of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will apply to determine if the IW is available and if you qualify.

Do I need a visa if I have an ABTC?

Yes, you will still need a visa to travel to the United States, unless you qualify for the  Visa Waiver Program . Having an Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Travelers Card (ABTC) does not change visa requirements, your visa status, or the visa process for travel to the United States.

How can I use my ABTC when I apply for my visa?

If you have an Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Travelers Card (ABTC),  you might be able to schedule an expedited visa interview appointment. Review the instructions for scheduling expedited appointments on the website of the  embassy or consulate  where you will apply.

Visa Annotations for Certain Maritime Industry Workers

Certain foreign maritime workers are eligible to apply for a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) once in the U.S. If you, as a maritime industry worker, will perform services in secure port areas, your visa must be annotated “TWIC Letter Received.” Workers whose visas are not annotated will not be permitted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to apply for a TWIC.

In order for your visa to be annotated, you must obtain a letter from your employer explaining the need for a TWIC and that you are a potential TWIC applicant. See a template example of this letter. You must present this letter when you apply for the B-1 visa. You must meet all other eligibility requirements for a B-1 visa.

Complete information about the TWIC program is available on TSA’s website at  https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic .

Visa Denial and Ineligibility

Review  Visa Denials  for detailed information about visa ineligibilities, denials and waivers.

I was refused a visa, under Section 214(b). May I reapply?

Yes, if you feel circumstances have changed regarding your application. Review  Visa Denials  to learn more.

Misrepresentation or Fraud

Attempting to obtain a visa by the willful misrepresentation of a material fact, or fraud, may result in the permanent refusal of a visa or denial of entry into the United States.

Review  Ineligibilities and Waivers: Laws .

Citizens of Canada and Bermuda do not require visas to enter the United States, for visit, tourism and temporary business travel purposes. For more information see  U.S. Embassy Ottawa website ,  U.S. Consulate Hamilton website  and  CBP website .

Citizens of China

In accordance with the agreement signed between the United States and China to extend visa validity, beginning on November 29, 2016, Chinese citizens with 10-year B1, B2 or B1/B2 visas in Peoples’ Republic of China passports will be required to update their biographical and other information from their visa application via a website every two years, or upon getting a new passport or B1, B2, or B1/B2 visa, whichever occurs first.  This mechanism is called EVUS - Electronic Visa Update System.

The EVUS website is now open to the public for enrollments at www.EVUS.gov .  CBP will not collect a fee for EVUS enrollment at this time. CBP anticipates the eventual implementation of an EVUS enrollment fee, but does not have a time frame. Until the implementation of a fee, travelers can enroll in EVUS without charge.  The Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will keep visa holders informed of new information throughout the year. For further information, please visit  www.cbp.gov/EVUS .‎

Citizens of Mexico

My hotel in Russia will supply a "Visa Tourist Visa Invitation" for about $20.00 per person faxed or nearly $38.00 sent by mail. I contacted a visa company here in the USA and was told that they could and would provide the invitation for $18.00. They also said that a faxed invitation would not be sufficient so therefore I would need to pay $38.00/person from the hotel in Russia. It seems easier to just pay the $18.00 to the company in the USA but I don't want any problems when I arrive in Russia. I arrive in Russia on April 1 and will be there for 5 days as a tourist. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I would seriously question your hotel...is this is a fairly maajor one? Most major ones will do for free. You will not have any issue if you go ahead and have a visa company provide this...this is done all the time...

As for faxed, which also makes me question what level hotel this is, most major hotels will send an e-mail with PDF you can then print out, and these ARE for sure accepted.

The American company as far as I understand makes a reservation for you in the partner’s hotel, gets invitation through that hotel and after it cancels the reservation. Once again as far as I know this way works perfectly but it’s not very official. Hotels which make money in this way always keep it in a secret. You can try. In any way when you come to Russia with visa no one would ask you how you managed to get this visa.

Note re: the $20-$38...even aside from my different findings re: this in St. Petersburg, Russia is in fact cognizant of "the market" , so these excessive fees will drive everyone get their visa support thru a visa agency as part of the overall processing. As for the mechanism for visa support issued by visa agencies, the larger ones associated with a tourist agency with ties to hotels. As for the "legality", this has been debated often here, and to date, I believe increasingly, and maybe in light of what you are indicating, most are using the "one-stop" shopping of the visa agency - without any problems.

I can't wait for the new visa stuff "agreed to" by Clinton and Lavrov back in November to be ratified by Russian Duma (the last step) so hopefully some of this nonsense will go away!

travel visa hotel

Use a visa service. Why fool around with a hotel faxing-emailing and so on. I have used Red Star Travel (Seattle Wa), for years and have had no problems at all. One application and your done. Other than the cost? Why bother? The cost and or faxing issue from the hotel sounds a little strange to me? Also, I am not crazy about giving out my charge card info to someone in Russia! Mafia-scam central. Have a good time. AIM.

Thank you for all your messages!

Note re: CC scams..so how would he go about getting reservation in the first place? Bottom line is they try to charge you anything at all, go the visa agency route...and maybe pick a different hotel next time assuming there is one!

travel visa hotel

Im a little confused!

No, you need to request it along with a tourist voucher your hotel will simply assume you got already otherwise.

Re Ebertsj, maybe I should have gone into more detail? If you book a room through one of the major on-line hotel sites, then I would be ok with doing so. But it sounded to me as if he was dealing direct with the hotel? And it all seemed a little fishy to me, (the charges-faxing etc). It seemed to me as if someone was trying to keep his reservation off the books; ie, not using the hotels email & such. So what I ment was I would not give my charge card info in this way! If a bad employee got ahold of his card? He's toast. AIM.

Thanks Michael, do you think that if i request the LOI from a "top" Hotel such as the Novotel that it will be forthcoming?

Why travel to Moscow

Contrasts: 12th century monasteries and some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe can be found side-by-side in this complex and captivating city. The diversity of this mega-city is astounding. Only a few steps away from the solemn red facade of the Kremlin and the sounds of righteous church bells, a buzzing night scene and alternative-fashion boutiques can be found.

Culture: In Moscow only the best goes. Be it a theatre, restaurant or gallery, the standards are certain to be world-class. The Bolshoi ballet company is reputed to be even better than the Mariinsky’s and “MMOMA” (Moscow’s museum of modern art) exhibits works of art as profound as any that could be found in the famed MOMA.

Convenience: Unlike the rest of Russia, it’s easy enough to get by with just English in Moscow and, driving excepted, it is surprisingly safe: the murder rate is lower than in some of America’s major cities.

Why visit Moscow

It would take more than two days to walk around the perimeter of the biggest city in Europe, Moscow. Many of its inhabitants barely know what’s beyond the few blocks around their flat and there are so many attractions that it’s almost impossible to know where to start. If there is such a thing as an antidote to boredom, Moscow City is it. The mind-boggling range and diversity of things to do, places to eat, parks, historical monuments and more means that a vacation in Moscow has a wealth of activities to offer for every type of traveler, from young families to retirees.

Reasons to Vacation in Moscow in 2022

The Bolshoi theatre is familiar to almost everyone as Russia’s grandest theatre, but what people don’t know is that there are many more bolshoi (big) sites in Moscow that are worth travelling all the way to Moscow to see. For more than 100 years, the world’s biggest bell has been hidden behind the Kremlin’s walls and inside Moscow’s main park (which is bigger than some countries!) there is the world’s largest outdoor ice-rink. Travelers that visit Moscow can stay at the Izmailovo, Europe’s biggest hotel, then eat at the largest and most historic McDonald’s in Europe and after that have fun at the largest European indoor theme park!

Ancient Past & Stunning Architecture:

As those who travel to Moscow will see, just because Moscow is a city of record-breaking, glitzy high-rises doesn’t mean that there is no history. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.

Culture & Convenience

For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.

Cheap as Caviar

In Moscow, everything is bargain when with the current foreign exchange rates being what they are. Even caviar doesn’t seem so dear when the exchange rate is at 60rub to the dollar, so go on indulge yourself! Take your 2022 vacation in Moscow and have the best of both worlds, with European luxury at very affordable prices.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

We had a great time both in Moscow and St Petersburg. Your travel agency was excellent in coordinating the whole trip. Everything worked like clockwork. The guides assigned to us were very nice and friendly. They had a great knowledge of their subjects. The cars and the drivers were great. The hotels were good and the itinerary was good. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. It was nice dealing with you and your company. Thank you very much for a great Russian experience. Have a great future ahead

However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

Next time you're planning a vacation, a travel credit card could defray some or all of the costs if it packs the right incentives. Typically, cards with higher annual fees provide the most value with perks like ongoing rewards, free checked bags, airport lounge access or other benefits. But even cards with low or no annual fees make it possible to earn some value toward travel, if you can qualify.

These cards generally require good credit (scores of 690 or higher), and even if you're eligible, it's not worth pursuing one if you can't pay off the credit card bill in full every month to avoid steep interest charges. And if you're working toward paying down existing debt, it might not be worth chasing points and miles until you've made progress on that front.

But as long as travel credit cards align with your financial goals, their potential savings merit consideration — even if you travel just once or twice per year. Explore the flexibility of a general-purpose travel credit card to book travel anywhere, or a branded credit card to book travel with a favorite hotel or airline. Either option may offer money-saving benefits toward your next trip.

Valuable features can lower costs

Offers will vary among general-purpose travel credit cards and airline- or hotel-branded credit cards, but some savings opportunities may include:

If a credit card offers a lengthy list of perks, the value can quickly add up. Here are some features to look out for:

A sign-up offer: Travel credit cards generally come with lucrative sign-up offers that let new cardholders earn a pile of points or miles by meeting a minimum spending requirement. It’s easier to snag if you can strategically time a credit card application around planned purchases during a heavy-spend month or season.

Free checked bags: Some airline credit cards offer free checked bags , which can add up to real savings when applied per person on a round trip. This is one way that Doug Figueroa, a content creator at the YouTube channel Zorito y Doug, makes up the cost of the $150 annual fee on an airline credit card. “The savings are $70 round trip per passenger listed in the same reservation,” he says.

TSA or Global Entry credit : Some travel cards issue a credit (up to $100) when you use them to pay for a TSA or Global Entry application fee. These expedited airport security screening programs can save time while traveling.

Travel credits: Depending on the card’s terms, travel credits may be used to save money on a variety of travel expenses like rideshare services, airfare or accommodations.

Airport lounge access: You can skip the pricey airport food with some travel credit cards that offer complimentary airport lounge access . Austin Maxwell, a South Carolina-based content creator at the blog The Maxwells Travel, uses a travel credit card to avoid those costs. “I’m saving $20 to $30 every time I go to the airport because I don’t have to buy food or drinks during a layover or preflight,” he says.

A companion ticket: Some airline credit cards cover the cost of a ticket for a friend or family member. Depending on the card's terms, you may have to pay taxes and fees on the fare, the companion ticket may have an expiration date and/or a spending requirement may apply.

Automatic elite status: You may earn elite status without much effort on some hotel-branded credit cards. Elite status can add up to valuable savings if the program offers free food, bonus points or suite upgrades.

Free nights: If your favorite hotel has a branded credit card that offers annual free night awards, it can stretch your vacation budget.

Protections and other benefits

A travel credit card that offers trip delay or cancellation insurance, lost baggage insurance, rental car coverage or other protections may also be of value to you. To qualify for these benefits you typically need to pay for the trip or covered purchase with the eligible credit card. Read the terms carefully to understand the extent of your coverage.

Figueroa says he saved $90 over three days with his card’s primary rental car coverage on a trip to Miami.

“Once you make the online reservation, you must decline all insurance offered by the rental company and pay for everything with your [card],” he says.

High-value reward redemptions

Points or miles on some travel credit cards might lose value if they are used for non-travel redemptions like cash back, gift cards or other options. Travel redemptions typically offer the best value, and you might squeeze out even more value with a general-purpose travel card that allows points to transfer to airline or hotel partners. It’s a strategy that Maxwell uses often to his advantage.

“It’s even better if there’s a transfer bonus associated with that," he says. "Credit card companies offer transfer bonuses — 15%, 20%, 30% bonus — if you are to transfer points to a specific airline.”

He says he has also transferred points to hotel partners to book hotel rooms with them. “It would be the equivalent of getting a hotel room at $120 that’s actually valued at $500,” he adds.

To determine whether to redeem rewards for travel or transfer them to a partner, compare costs by checking the credit card’s booking platform and the partner’s website. Also factor in whether rewards transfer on at least a 1:1 ratio, meaning that you'll get the equivalent value in points or miles transferred.

With over 4,000 branches and $1.7 trillion in assets, Wells Fargo is the third largest bank in the U.S. Yet Wells Fargo credit cards offerings have long lagged in popularity behind competitors such as Chase and American Express. But, the introduction of the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card * The information for the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. includes the addition of airline and hotel transfer partners to the Wells Fargo Rewards program, adding appeal for travel rewards enthusiasts. Here’s what you need to know about the Wells Fargo Rewards program.

How to earn Wells Fargo Rewards

Wells Fargo now offers three main cards that earn Wells Fargo Rewards:

  • Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card : The no-annual-fee card earns 2% cash rewards on purchases.
  • Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card : The no-annual-fee-card earns 3 points per $1 at restaurants, travel, gas stations, transit, popular streaming services and phone plans and 1 point per $1 on other purchases.
  • Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card * The information for the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. : For a $95 annual fee, the card earns 5 points per $1 on hotels, 4 points per $1 on airlines, 3 points per $1 on other travel and dining and 1 point per $1 on other purchases.

You can pool the rewards between all three cards, according to a Wells Fargo spokesperson. This makes holding a combination of the Active Cash and one of the Autograph cards appealing as you can use the cards strategically to earn elevated rewards on all of your spending.

How to redeem Wells Fargo Rewards

With the Active Cash and the Autograph cards, points can be redeemed as a credit to your qualifying Wells Fargo credit card, checking account or mortgage. You can also use your rewards to pay for purchases from participating merchants. Other options include redeeming rewards for travel reservations through Wells Fargo or gift cards. Wells Fargo Autograph Journey and Autograph cardholders also will have the option starting April 4, 2024 of transferring rewards to six participating airline and hotel loyalty programs.

What are Wells Fargo Rewards worth?

When redeeming your points for cash back, statement credits, purchases, travel reservations booked through Wells Fargo and gift cards, Wells Fargo points are worth one cent each. When you transfer points to airline and hotel partners, the value will vary based on the partner loyalty program.

Best ways to use Wells Fargo Rewards

Transferring to airline or hotel partners when the program goes live April 4, 2024 may be the best way to redeem your Wells Fargo Rewards points. That’s because it’s possible to get a value of several cents per point or mile, especially when you’re able to redeem your rewards for expensive airline tickets or hotel stays. For example, the Air France-KLM Flying Blue frequent flyer program may offer business class tickets to Europe for 55,000 miles each way. If you’re able to redeem 110,000 miles for a round-trip flight that would normally cost around $5,000, you can receive nearly five cents in value per point transferred.

Another option is the Choice Hotels Choice Privileges program, which can offer extremely valuable redemptions for hotels in places such as Europe or Japan, and for all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean. For example, an award night for a room with one double bed at the Comfort Hotel Bolivar in Rome, Italy in June 2024 is 25,000 points, but the cash price for this property in the heart of the city is $685 per night. This results in a value of roughly 2.7 cents per point redeemed.

Wells Fargo transfer partners

Starting April 4, 2024, the Wells Fargo’s Autograph Journey and Autograph cards have five airline partners and one hotel partner:

  • Choice Privileges®
  • Air France-KLM Flying Blue
  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Aer Lingus AerClub
  • Iberia Plus

Final verdict

Until recently, Wells Fargo Rewards was a simple program that allowed cardholders to redeem their points for one cent each towards cash back, statement credits, gift cards or travel reservations. But, with the introduction of the Autograph Journey card and the addition of transfer partners as a redemption option — cardholders now have the opportunity to turn their rewards into airline miles and hotel points, potentially raising their value to far more than one cent each.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Wells Fargo Rewards points are worth just one cent each towards statement credits, gift cards and travel reservations booked through Wells Fargo. However, Autograph Journey and Autograph cardmembers are able to transfer their rewards to airline and hotel partners, potentially unlocking redemptions worth at least several cents per point or mile.

Wells Fargo Rewards generally will not expire as long as your account is open and active, but check your card’s fine print to be sure.

If you redeem your points for travel booked through Wells Fargo Rewards, points are worth one cent each towards flights. So a $200 fight will cost 20,000 points. However, Wells Fargo Autograph cardholders can transfer their points to airline partners. The airline miles are redeemed through the airline, and the number of points required will vary based on the flight chosen and the rules of the frequent flyer program.

Yes, you can transfer Wells Fargo points to another person by going to the Wells Fargo Rewards page, logging in and choosing the “Share” option.
