Activity Guide

Comparing attractions: which one is right for you.

Consider your preferences and budget limit when picking an activity for your family.

Niagara Falls Grand Helicopter Tour is perfect for thrill-seekers.

The family will experience scenic views of Canada’s most accessible natural wonders, but be prepared to pay a hefty amount for one ride.

For a unique experience, Edward Stone’s Mind Trix brings magic and illusion to the stage.

You’ll question how things came to be with how good the magician is.

Unfortunately, this show is known for its high ticket prices.

Meanwhile, getting the Clifton Hill Fun Pass will let you experience exciting attractions for cheap.

Every activity is unique on its own, but you’ll have to move quickly because you have many things to do and sights to see.

Alternatively, you can ride the Niagara SkyWheel to see the picturesque views of the city from above.

Just make sure to go when the weather is nice.

I’m sure you’ll find the best one for your family.

How I Picked The Activities

I am a seasoned travel writer and a parent.

I’ve been visiting Niagara Falls yearly to check out the top activities to do and attractions to go to.

Additionationally, I interview locals and fellow parents for more thorough research.

For the places I have yet to visit, I consult travel sites for comments and opinions on the destination.

Whether you’re seeking thrilling adventures, immersive entertainment, or breathtaking natural beauty, this destination has something for everyone.

One of our standout experiences is attending Edward Stone’s Mind Trix Show: Illusion of the Mind.

We were amazed as Edward Stone pushed the boundaries of perception, leaving us questioning what is real and what is merely an illusion.

Another must-try activity is the Clifton Hill Fun Pass, which grants access to the top six attractions in the area.

My kids and I enjoyed a variety of entertainment options, including iconic experiences such as riding the Niagara SkyWheel.

While all the activities in Niagara Falls offer their own unique appeal, the Niagara Falls Grand Helicopter Adventure stands out as the best option.

This exhilarating helicopter tour took us soaring above the falls, granting an unparalleled view of its sheer grandeur and power.

From the moment we lifted off, we were immersed in the beauty of the cascading waters and the lush greenery of the Niagara Parks.

Niagara Falls tour boat operator files for bankruptcy protection, gets new owner

boat tours for niagara falls

The Hornblower boat cruise approaches the Niagara Falls on July 14, 2020. Glenn Lowson/The Globe and Mail

The iconic Niagara Falls boat tours that have been a staple of countless vacation plans for more than 180 years have been saved after operator Hornblower Group found a financial saviour.

Years of losses and a billion-dollar debt pushed the global conglomerate with rights to ferry passengers near the falls to file for bankruptcy protection in the United States and Canada. Now, as the San Francisco-based company navigates a complex restructuring process that involves its private equity owner selling a majority stake in the business, Hornblower’s Canadian operations are being touted as key to its recovery.

Hornblower has a deal with the Niagara Parks Commission to be the exclusive provider of Niagara Falls boat tours on the Canadian side of the border through 2043. Roughly 2.5 million guests don ponchos and board one of Hornblower’s three sightseeing vessels in the Lower Niagara River each year, the company said in a court filing last month.

“This longevity, paired with the high volume of clientele, makes Hornblower Canada’s business an essential aspect of the company’s restructuring,” the filing said, noting boats have been taking passengers within soaking distance of the falls since 1840.

The Canadian operations represents a tiny fraction of Hornblower’s global business, accounting for just 7 per cent of revenue in 2023. The parent company boasts operations in more than 100 countries, with roughly 6,000 employees. Scale, however, was not enough for the company to survive the onset of COVID-19.

“In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had a direct and profoundly adverse impact on the Company’s financial condition and operating performance,” the filing said. “Hornblower’s losses in 2020 alone exceeded US$287-million on a net income basis.”

Debt quickly started piling up, nearly doubling from US$630-million in 2019 to almost US$1.2-billion by the end of 2023. Annual debt interest charges tripled from US$38-million to US$115-million at the same time as rates rose rapidly over that period.

Geoffrey Morawetz, Chief Justice of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, approved Hornblower’s application under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) for its U.S. Chapter 11 proceedings to be recognized in Canada on Feb 21. Had approval not been granted, however, Hornblower warned in its filing there was “a concern” that the Niagara Parks Commission “may take steps to terminate” its exclusivity deal.

That deal “is critical to the Canadian business,” Hornblower said. “If NPC were to purport to terminate the agreement, this would have a drastic effect on the continuation of the Canadian business.”

The Canadian business – in addition to Niagara Falls tours also includes day cruises in the Toronto harbour and in the Thousand Islands near Gananoque, Ont. – has only recently started to recover from its pandemic-related slump. After reporting net losses of US$11.8-million and US$7.8-million in 2020 and 2021 respectively, the Canadian business only returned to profitability in 2022.

Hornblower is fully paid up on its rental obligations to the Niagara Parks Commission, NPC chief executive David Adames said in an interview.

“Right now we have no concerns,” he said. “As long as they meet all of their financial obligations to us, meaning the rent payments, then everything is fine.”

On Feb 21, the same day Hornblower submitted its bankruptcy filings, the company announced that investment firm Strategic Value Partners LLC would be acquiring a majority stake in the business from private equity investor Crestview Partners LLC. The transaction, which has yet to close, includes US$300-million in debtor-in-possession financing from Deutsche Bank and US$121-million in financing from SVP-managed funds and Crestview.

The company’s total debt is expected to fall by approximately US$720-million once the deal is completed, Hornblower said.

“The steps we are taking to transition the ownership of Hornblower Group and strengthen our financial foundation will have no impact on the land- and water-based experiences and transportation services we provide globally,” Hornblower chief executive officer Kevin Rabbitt said via e-mail. “We are continuing to serve guests in Niagara without interruption.”

In fact, NPC’s Mr. Adames said Hornblower has been approved to start Niagara Falls tours earlier than usual this year. Tours usually do not begin until mid-April or even May, he said, though this year Hornblower tours are set to commence on March 28.

“It is a good way to kick-start the traditional summer tourism season a bit earlier,” Mr. Adames said. “If they go a bit earlier, that really sends a strong signal to the tourism industry that we are geared up for a strong 2024.”

Niagara Falls, N.Y., and area: Take the plunge! Back to video

“Oooh! The Falls are beautiful!

“And that’s Niagara Falls, N.Y., on the other side. Check out all those people in yellow walking around down there like little ants.

“Now let’s get back to the casino!”

My wife Ruth and I decided to become two of those people in yellow and spent a sensational, family-friendly weekend learning more about what’s on the United States side of the Niagara River.

The highlight, as you might imagine, was our experience looking up with wonder at the third, often-neglected, waterfall at that point of the Niagara River. While the Horseshoe Falls and the American Falls are larger and easier to spot in pictures, the Bridal Veil Falls (between Goat Island and Luna Island, just south of the American Falls) is the one accessible via the Cave of the Winds (niagarafallsstatepark.com/).

TIP: Plan ahead. I purchased “water shoes” for Ruth and I before our visit to make our walk both safer and more comfortable. Put your regular shoes in a plastic bag, and carry them inside your poncho.

The visit begins at “The World Changed Here” pavilion, where we learned about the history of the area, and specifically about hydroelectric power and inventor Nikola Tesla’s contributions to its transmission via alternating current (AC).

From there, after an elevator ride and a walk through a tunnel, we were given our yellow ponchos. Another comfortable walk led to a series of wooden walkways — removed and reinstalled each year because of winter weather conditions — to get to the Bridal Veil Falls. Yes, you will get wet — especially if you dare ascend to the “Hurricane Deck,” the closest viewing area to the Bridal Veil Falls. You also will get a huge smile as you feel the power of the water hitting your body, and you see the reactions from those around you to the water.

You also will get memories of that visit that will stick with you for a very long time.

When on Goat Island, another viewing area which shouldn’t be missed is Terrapin Point, where you can get a view of the Horseshoe Falls from the U.S. perspective.

And those yellow ponchos? They are part of a festival of primary colours. Passengers on Niagara City Cruises , which does Falls boat tours from the Canadian side, wear red ponchos, while people on the U.S.-based Maid of the Mist are issued blue ponchos.

Should you take the plunge (figuratively, not literally) and cross over to Niagara Falls, N.Y., it also is worth your time to visit these nearby New York State communities:

Lewiston is a quiet town of about 16,000 people on the Niagara River just north of Niagara Falls.

The Niagara Crossing Hotel and Spa in Lewiston was our home base for the weekend. The hotel has a big banquet hall with an outdoor patio, suitable for a wedding and reception near the self-proclaimed Honeymoon Capital of the World.

Just east of the hotel is a pedestrian-friendly area of Center St., between 4th and 8th streets. It is home to many locally-owned shops and businesses. Enjoy the walk, and then enjoy lunch or dinner at the Brickyard Pub and BBQ and dessert at The Village Bake Shop .

To the west of the hotel is the Niagara River, the relaxing greenery of Lewiston Landing Park, and the Griffon Brewery and Gastropub . “The Griffon” has a large and varied menu, plus views of the river and Canada on the other side. Part of my meal was a Western New York favourite, Beef on Weck.

Lewiston is also home to Artpark , home to the performance arts and visual art for the past 50 years.

A 35-minute car drive away from Niagara Falls, N.Y., a visit to Lockport provides you and your family the opportunity to travel nearly 200 years into the past.

Lockport is a community of about 20,000 people situated on the Erie Canal, a waterway built in the early part of the 19th century to facilitate boat travel between New York City, Buffalo, and other western points on the Great Lakes.

Boats, then and now, deal with the change in elevation by entering “locks” — an enclosed area where by adding or removing water, the boat can be raised or lowered.

“Locks are fancy boat elevators,” Cap’n Roger said during our hour-long cruise, presented by Lockport Locks & Erie Canal Cruises . The company operates the cruises from roughly mid-May to mid-October, and during our cruise, Cap’n Roger provided entertaining and informative commentary throughout, pointing out items such as the nearby Lock Tenders Tribute sculpture and the 19th-century Flight of Five Locks.

The boat goes up through Lock 34 and Lock 35 before turning around and coming back down.

TIP: Stand at the bow when going through the final lock when returning, and be prepared for an amazing view!

If your preference is to stay on dry land, there are spectator areas on either side of the canal.

Youngstown is situated where the Niagara River flows into Lake Ontario, which made it an important military location.

Today, Old Fort Niagara is a historic site. Since the late part of the 17th century, the area of the fort was occupied by the French, the British, and the U.S. before restoration and opening as a public museum in 1934.

The oldest building on the site, known as the French Castle, dates to 1726-27. It’s also the oldest permanent building on the Great Lakes, according to Scott Elliott, the programs manager for Old Fort Niagara.

The French Castle was used for accommodations for up to 60 soldiers, and also included areas such as the commander’s quarters, guard rooms, and a Jesuit chapel.

During the day, flags of the three occupying countries are raised in an impressive ceremony. We also got to witness a musket-firing demonstration, presented by an educational and very funny re-enactor. During the warmer months, there are special re-enactor activity days, which examine events such as the Siege of Niagara in 1759, the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812.

Inside the fort’s visitor centre, displays help to explain the history of the fort.

WILSON, OLCOTT and BURT

Wilson and Olcott are situated on Lake Ontario, and community businesses take advantage of small town meets water for various fun activities.

In Wilson, the Wilson Boat House Restaurant is part of a seasonal complex which also includes a marina, fishing charter operation, and limited accommodations (with a swimming pool).

Our dinner was a feast for the taste buds. It also was a feast for the eyes (people-watching as boaters and their friends socialized on their watercraft docked below the restaurant) and a feast for the ears (listening to the live entertainment provided that night by the R&B sounds of Buffalo-based Nickel City Pimp Choir).

In Olcott ), Olcott Beach Carousel Park is a small, inexpensive fairground which will keep your youngsters amused. Weekend activities from the U.S. Memorial Day weekend to Labour Day include a Herschell-Spillman carousel, other vintage rides, and a magic show. Nearby is a vintage Ferris wheel, which owner Paul Hartigan refers to as “Hartz’s Folly.”

At Lakeview Village Shoppes on the boardwalk, open during the warm-weather months, vendors offer the opportunity to browse for gifts or get a bite to eat. Lakeview Village Shoppes is also home to free music performances and wine tastings on Friday nights.

More free music is presented on Sunday afternoons at Gazebo Park.

Burt is just south of Olcott and is home to Live Edge Brewing Company and its neighbour, Schulze Vineyards & Winery (https://schulzewines.com/).

Live Edge is a roadside resto-bar which has its own beers on tap, plus a variety of “guest taps” from other U.S.-based craft brewers. There are chicken wings on the food menu (this is Western New York, after all), but these chicken wings are both slow smoked and then deep fried.

SOLAR ECLIPSE DAY

Niagara Falls, N.Y. is one of the communities in North America which will experience a total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. Eclipse-related events are expected to take place from April 4-8 at Niagara Falls State Park, the Aquarium of Niagara, the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute, the public libraries, the Niagara Power Vista, the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center, and the Niagara Aerospace Museum. Visit niagarafallsusa.com for more information.

GETTING THERE

By car from the Toronto area, take the Fort Erie-bound QEW to either Hwy. 405 (for the Queenston Lewiston bridge to Lewiston, N.Y.) or Hwy. 420 (for the Rainbow bridge to Niagara Falls, N.Y.). Be prepared for border delays at popular travel times. Visit niagarafallsbridges.com for real-time traffic conditions. VIA Rail also serves Niagara Falls, N.Y.

GETTING AROUND

During the warmer months, a free Discover Niagara shuttle service is available, linking areas from Old Fort Niagara to Goat Island, plus weekend shuttles to and from Lockport.

You can see April's Total Solar Eclipse while visiting iconic Niagara Falls

Niagara Parks is planning a stacked lineup of events for the weekend leading up to April's Total Solar Eclipse.

Several Niagara Parks properties, including the Niagara Parks Power Station, Table Rock Centre and the Butterfly Conservatory will host a series of educational events and discussions beginning on Saturday, April 6 and running through the day of the eclipse, Monday, April 8.

Guests can expect to hear from NASA experts and members of the Canadian Space Agency during question and answer sessions leading up to the event, with a mobile planetarium for guests to interact with. All of the programming is free, but advanced registration is required for some events.

Programs specifically for children and families will also be available at all three sites throughout the weekend — also free of charge.

For those interested in exploring other parts of the park while visiting, Old Fort Erie will be open and accessible to guests during the weekend and on the day of the eclipse, with its own series of talks and Q&A sessions with experts.

Park officials said the upcoming eclipse is the first time a total solar eclipse will be visible from Ontario since the 1970s. If you miss this one, you'll have to wait a whopping 120 years to see the next one from Niagara Falls — in 2144.

If you're interested in attending, you can find out more information on the official Niagara Parks Eclipse website.
