Being such a large country, the weather in the US is different depending on which area you are in. Summer (June to August) is the peak travel season due to school holidays, but it can be uncomfortably hot in the desert areas and the south.

The shoulder seasons of spring and autumn are generally considered to be the best times to visit, but the weather is still highly variable and these may be the wettest times in some parts of the country (such as the Pacific Northwest ). Winter can be cold in the northern states, but quiet in other areas, which can make it a pleasant time to visit.

With immigration playing a major part in the development of America, today the country is made up of many different cultures. It’s no wonder modern America is rich with a variety of cultural traditions, cuisines, religions and festivals. Because of this, a large diversity of holidays are celebrated in America. Annual holidays like  Independence Day  and Thanksgiving are usually celebrated by all regardless of religion or political persuasion, and give people a chance to reconnect with family and friends around the dinner table or grill.

Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, marks the end of the Carnival season in New Orleans. Witness a chaotic collision of lively music, colorful costumes, masquerade masks, soul food and joyful 'krewes' at the parades, parties and masquerade balls in late February every year.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to United States?

It depends on where you’re from. Many countries now operate under the United States Visa Waiver Program, meaning a visa isn’t required for stays of up to 90 days for travel purposes. There are 40 participating countries, including the United Kingdom , Australia , New Zealand, Germany and Spain.

If you're eligible for the Visa Waiver Program, you must obtain a letter of authorization before you travel to the States. This can be obtained by submitting an application through the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation ( ESTA ).

If you’re a national from a non-participating country of the Visa Waiver Program, you must apply for a non-immigrant visa. Please see the Department of State website for more information.

If you have traveled to Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen or the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on or after 1 March 2011, you are ineligible and must apply for a non-immigrant visa instead.

People from a participating country who are also citizens of Cuba, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Syria or Sudan must also apply for a non-immigrant visa.

Is tipping customary in the US?

Tipping is very much a part of the culture in the United States. Tips are expected at restaurants, cafes and diners, as well as by taxi drivers, valet attendants, porters and hotel maids.

People working in the service industry generally receive low wages and therefore rely upon tips as a major source of income.

In general, leave 15 to 20% of the bill at places serving food and a few dollars to bartenders and hotel staff who provide a personal service like carrying bags or cleaning your room.

What is the internet access like in the US?

Internet access is excellent in the US, and internet cafes and Wi-Fi hot spots are easily found in most cities and major towns.

Can I use my cell phone while in the US?

Cell phone coverage is excellent in most parts of the US although coverage may be patchy in remote, mountainous areas like national parks and canyons. Ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive.

What are the toilets like in the US?

Western-style flushable toilets are the norm in the US.

What will it cost for a…?

Prices can vary between states, but on average, here's what you can expect to pay for a:

• Cup of coffee = USD $2-5.00 for a regular cup, up to $8.00 for a specialty coffee
• Hotdog from street cart = USD $4.00
• Dinner at a mid-range restaurant = USD $20-40 per person
• NYC one-way subway ticket = USD $3.00

Can I drink the water in the US?

Drinking water from taps in the US is considered safe unless otherwise marked. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water.

Are credit cards accepted widely in the US?

Major credit cards are widely accepted by stores in the US. Smaller cafes and shops may not accept credit cards, so ensure you carry enough cash to cover small purchases.

What is ATM access like in the US?

ATMs are common in the US, so finding one won't be a problem in most towns and cities.

What kind of transport will I use in the United States?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

What sort of accommodation will I stay in while traveling in the United States?

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Take in the vast expanse of the Great Gorge and make a mid-flight stop for a walk on a glacier. As you step off the plane and out into the quiet stillness, you’ll get a sense of the scale of the Alaskan Range paired with incomparable views.

Enjoy an included lunch and then step aboard the Sternwheeler Discovery, and explore the “last frontier” by river to uncover Alaska’s rich culture and history. You’ll disembark the boat and take a tour of the Chena Indian Village Living Museum to learn about the Athabascan tribe’s way of life and how they thrived in the harsh Arctic. Then, you’ll see a bush pilot demonstration as a plane takes off and lands right on the water next to the boat, and hear how these pilots connect the remote destinations in Alaska to civilization. Afterward, meet the dogs and drivers at Trail Breaker Kennel, home of the late four-time Iditarod champion Susan Butcher. You’ll also dock at Steamboat Landing, a throwback to trading posts where you can shop for unique souvenirs. This is a 3-hour river journey you won’t want to miss.

We had a wonderful time on the Intrepid tour. Our guide Chad was really pleasant and a great organiser. The tour included so many spectacular national parks, the accommodation was excellent and there were plenty of opportunities for hiking.

7 day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Tour

All We Could Have Asked For and More! We recently returned from the ""7 day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Tour"". Our tour was led by Kaitlyn Usher. The tour was wonderful, everything was near perfect and Kaitlyn is one of the kindest, hardest working and knowledgeable guides we've ever had! I had mentioned that my husband was turning 70 on the 1st day of the tour to someone at Bindlestiff 2 weeks before the tour and Kaitlyn had a small birthday cake and candles on that first lunch stop! What a nice surprise for my husband. Most anything we asked of her was taken care of and questions answered. We just can't say enough good things about her! The itinerary of the tour was great, we saw and did everything we wanted to do. The van was comfortable and kept clean by Kaitlyn every night. Plenty of items for the picnic lunches (a super idea). She always had options to match physical abilities. The 50 minute ride over the Grand Canyon (optional) was spectacular, the heliport is a distance from the rim, so be sure to do the longer ride to have enough canyon viewing time. The optional Hummer tour was very exciting and scary (in a good way). Thank you for a wonderful birthday trip and great memories!

Utah Parks Circuit

I had a great time doing the Utah Parks Circuit. Despite the bad weather we could see a lot. My highlights were the Narrows in Zion and Bryce Canyon. More time in Bryce Canyon would have been nice. Campgrounds were remote but all had nice restrooms with showers.

Mighty 5 From Las Vegas

A great tour! One day in each park was just enough to give us a sense of the grandeur of each of them. People taking the tour with us were great, and our guide was very knowledgeable. We were given options so that those who wanted to do things on their own could do so, while those that remained with the group stayed with the guide and learned about the history, geology, etc. This was the first time I took a vacation with a tour group, and I was very glad that I did because I learned more than I would have if I had explored the parks on my own.

Hike Alaska: Valdez and Wrangell St Elias

It was a very fun and adventuresome trip. The tour guide was well organized and hard working. The only problem was one of the camp sites was pretty primitive compared with the "KOA-style" campgrounds advertised by the company.

No Words Can Adequately Describe...We recently went on the 7 day Southwest tour followed by the 7 day Yellowstone tour. We chose the camping option. All our expectations were exceeded. The itinerary was full on, allowing us to see everything on offer and more. A huge thank you to Chris Patrick, our guide. He kept everyone engaged, entertained, watered and fed. No request or concerns went unanswered. He's an asset to the Bindlestiff team and we would DEFINITELY recommend you do these trips. Being able to stay right in the National Parks was fantastic.

Alaska Kenai Adventure 9 Days

WOW! What an amazing trip! My nephew and I traveled to Alaska for the 9-day Kenai Adventure. This trip exceeded all expectations! Dave and Natalie are wonderful....highly experienced, knowledgeable, organized, laid back, and fun! The converted school bus was unique....comfortable with plenty of space. The food was great...Natalie was very accommodating to my vegan diet. I loved the family atmosphere of the group and how everyone would pitch in with the chores. The tents were easy to set up and take down. The campsites were in areas with stunning views. Each day brought a new adventure....wildlife cruise, hiking, sea kayaking, and the highlight of the trip....bear viewing at Lake Clark National Park and Preserve! Definitely the best adventure evah!!! Shout out to hard working Carolina and beautiful boy Tayo:) Denali 2022!!!

Amazing tour! I had so much fun! If you want to see the best of Alaska, you won't find a better tour than this. It checks all the popular places to visit. Fantastic itinerary, super comfortable tents, delicious food, smores for dessert every evening, I mean, it can't get better than that, right?! :-) Infinite Adventure owners are highly competent and knowledgeable guides. They went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and help with any questions or issues. Their son was a lovely addition to the trip, a genius little man who can make your great day even more extraordinary. :-) Overall, one of the best tours I've been on, and I can't wait for the next one with these guys! Natalie, Dave, Kiki and Yan thank you for everything!

the tour itself was amazing. The national parks do not disappoint. The travel accomodations were very cramped and uncomfortable. I am only 5 foot tall and I was cramped in this 14 passenger van. Food opportunities were limited.

Everything was great organized, our CEO Megan was so kind and well prepared.

The "Vegas to LA : Grand national parks" trip was great! Our tour leader, Juli, was really accomodating and always had an answer when asked a question about the natural parks. Plus, she made efforts to speak in a way that even people who are not 100% at ease with English could understand, which was nice. The season was perfect to hike in the parks, I just wish we could have stayed more time in some of them (Bryce Canyon, Joshua Tree…).
