The best time to visit South Africa for a wildlife safari is from May to September. During these winter months, the east of the country (where the main parks are located) experiences its Dry season. Wildlife is easier to spot during the Dry season because vegetation thins, and animals gather around waterholes and rivers. The ‘Kruger & Around’ sections below relate to the parks and reserves in Greater Kruger and in the KwaZulu-Natal Province .

Cape Town’s Dry and Wet seasons are opposite to those in Kruger. Therefore, the best time for visiting Cape Town and surrounds is during the dry summer months of November to March. The ‘Cape Town & Around’ sections below apply to the entire Western Cape and nearby parks .

Pros and Cons - Kruger & Around

May to September – Dry Season – Winter

  • Wildlife is easier to spot because there is less vegetation and animals gather around rivers and waterholes
  • Little to no rain and most days are sunny
  • Few mosquitoes
  • Low season and parks are not crowded, except for Kruger during school holidays
  • It gets cold at night and in the mornings

October to April – Wet Season – Summer

  • After the first rains, the scenery turns green and all looks fresh
  • Best time for bird watching, and migratory birds are present
  • Rains are mostly short afternoon showers and seldom interfere with your trip
  • Wildlife viewing can be quite slow since the bush is thicker and wildlife is more difficult to spot
  • It gets very hot in December, January and February, and parks get crowded during the main school holidays in December

Pros and Cons - Cape Town & Around

May to September – Wet Season – Winter

  • Although it is the Wet season, there are many sunny days
  • Wildlife viewing in the Cape Region parks is good year-round
  • It is cold for beach and general holiday activities
  • Game drives in open vehicles are bitterly cold

October to April – Dry Season – Summer

  • Pleasant warm weather with little rain
  • Best time to enjoy Cape Town and the Garden Route
  • It is less cold on game drives
  • It gets busy in high season

Most parks offer year-round wildlife viewing, but they are at their best during the Dry season when wildlife is easier to spot. Kgalagadi gets extremely hot during December to February and is best visited in cooler months.

When Is the Best Time to Visit South Africa?

By CNT Editors

Clifton Beach in Cape Town South Africa

When is the best time to visit South Africa?

The best time to visit South Africa depends on where you want to go and what you want to do on holiday. The temperatures range based on where in the country you are visiting, with the north seeing warmer temperatures than the south of the country. The Western Cape is famed for experiencing rainy seasons in the winter, but the Indian Ocean coastline provides warmer and more equatorial temperatures. Needless to say, it's important to plan!

What are the summer and winter months in South Africa?

The summer months last from December to March, while the winter months range from June to September.

When is the rainy season in South Africa?

Cape Town experiences the rainy season during the winter months, with the wettest days ranging from June to August. The rest of the country’s rainy season occurs during the summer, with November to March having the highest precipitation levels.

When is the most affordable time to visit South Africa?

Again, it depends on what you want to do on holiday. It is cheapest to visit South Africa during the winter months (June to September) unless you are planning a safari , as winter is peak safari season, with the drier climate making it ideal for wildlife spotting .

When is the best time to go on a safari in South Africa?

The best time to go on safari is between May to October. The winter months bring dry, clear days ideal for animal tracking, but pack some warm clothes for those cooler nights. The wildlife also tends to concentrate near reliable water sources during these months, which makes game viewing more predictable. If you’re looking for a more detailed guide, look at our guide to planning our first South Africa safari.

When is the best time to go whale watching in South Africa?

Winter is the best whale-watching season in South Africa when most pods travel to and from the Antarctic to breed and calve off the waters of Mozambique and Madagascar. The sightings start as early as May and can last into early December, with Hermanus being a favurite for whale-watching, especially in September.

Top tip : The migration also coincides with the Sardine Run , between May and July, where the sardines spawn in the South African waters, attracting super-pods of whales and dolphins, diving birds and even sharks. We recommend setting up a tour off the coast of Port Saint Johns.

The Best Times to Visit South Africa, According to Locals

For wildlife and wine, coastline and culture, South Africa is the ultimate destination.

Best Time to Visit for Smaller Crowds

Best time to visit for lower prices.

  • Best Time to Visit for Good Weather
  • Best Time to Visit for a Wildlife Safari
  • Best Time to Visit for a Beach Holiday
  • Best Time to Visit for Festivals
  • Worst Time to Visit South Africa

In many ways, South Africa is a country of abundance. Nicknamed the “Rainbow Nation” by Archbishop Desmond Tutu after its first democratic election in 1994, South Africa is overflowing with iconic wildlife, truly epic environments and vistas, and world-renowned hotels and restaurants. Pre-pandemic, the country of warm, friendly people drew more than 10 million annual visitors; it’s now rebounding steadily, with four million people arriving in the first half of 2023.

“South Africa is an especially compelling nation, with many cultures, languages, and traditions to explore and enjoy,” says Cape Town local Simon Mandy, managing director of The Royal Portfolio , a South African family–owned collection of luxurious properties that include The Silo Hotel in Cape Town and Royal Malewane in Kruger National Park. “This is reflected in our cuisine, which draws on a wealth of fresh, seasonal, local ingredients and multiple influences to create unique flavor sensations.”

What’s more, it’s a well-known fact that those spending U.S. dollars get amazing value for their money — all in a country where English is spoken and there are flawless beaches, endless savannas, and impressive mountains. Having visited South Africa’s coastline, wine country, Garden Route, and wildlife preserves over the years in January, February, October and December, I have experienced a variety of weather conditions, from extreme wind to fog to baking heat. Oftentimes, it feels like multiple seasons in one day, especially in Cape Town, so I always pack a lot of adaptable layers.

Roar Africa founder and CEO Deborah Calmeyer , a safari expert and part-time Cape Town resident, loves being there most in March, when “there are no crowds and perfect warm weather to enjoy all the beauty of Table Mountain and the emerald Winelands without the December rush of people.”

For her, the reasons to visit South Africa are as numerous as its healthy populations of zebras, lions, rhinos, and elephants: “the level of service; the restaurants, in both the cities and the bush; and the diversity of experience — the cosmopolitan culture of Cape Town , the beauty of the Winelands, the ochre dunes of the Kalahari Desert, and the abundance of pristine bush, teeming with wildlife.”

  • High Season: December through February
  • Shoulder Season: September to November; March to May
  • Low Season: June to August

Jess Macdonald/Travel + Leisure

If you don’t like crowds, avoid Cape Town during its busy holiday surge in December and January, says Calmeyer, who adds that the most thronged months for safari tend to be December and June through August. The rest of the year, adventurers are typically blessed with more intimate experiences for viewing wildlife plus fewer vehicles around exciting sightings. “There is so much beauty throughout the other months of the year and, provided you have the right gear, you’ll have a spectacular experience in this country of contrasts,” Calmeyer adds. According to Mandy, the quietest times to travel in South Africa are October, November, April, and May — the country as a whole receives fewer visitors during these months.

In Cape Town, travelers will typically find May through August “the lightest on the pocket,” says Mandy, adding that the best pricing on a full South Africa itinerary — one that includes a safari — can be found in the shoulder season of April and May, their autumn. September, which tends to be somewhat quiet, can also be more accessible price-wise, according to Calmeyer. Conversely, December is when prices hit their peak, and oftentimes hotels and lodges enforce minimum stay periods.

Best Time to Visit for Good Weather

“South Africa has a very pleasant and favorable climate year-round,” says Mandy, who notes that spring and autumn offer the most balanced weather in the majority of the country. Mandy’s personal favorite season is spring, fromSeptember to November. “It offers beautiful displays of blooming gardens and wildflowers on safari,” he says. “The weather is perfect — neither too hot nor too cold.” Between October and May — essentially the shoulder seasons and summertime (a.k.a. high season) — Calmeyer says the weather on the Western Cape is her favorite. The same goes for safari destinations across the country. “The weather is brilliant,” she says. These are also the best months for hiking, in her opinion, as there's little rainfall (contrary to Johannesburg, where most of the rain occurs in their summer). One disclaimer: Because South Africa is so large, with lots of geographical diversity, there are plenty of climate quirks as you traverse different regions.

Best Time to Visit for a Wildlife Safari

In Calmeyer’s expert opinion, “anytime” can be the right time to take a wildlife safari — if you use the right local travel advisor with an intimate knowledge of the country’s parks and regions, which range from the Kalahari in the Northern Cape to the most famous Kruger National Park . “There are epic opportunities for wildlife viewing 12 months a year,” she says. Typically, the drier months (June to September) are considered excellent times because “animals gather around water sources in the absence of rain,” says Mandy, meaning they can be easier to spot. The vegetation also typically dies back during these months, making smaller creatures more visible. He adds, “If you’re an avid bird-watcher, the warmer months (November to February) see the arrival of migratory birds and a dramatic increase in volume of the dawn chorus.” That time of year is referred to as green season, when the weather tends to be rainy and warm in wildlife reserves and parks.

Best Time to Visit for a Beach Holiday

There’s no question that summer in South Africa (December to February) is the best time to sunbathe on one of the many spectacular beaches that wrap its long, 1,770-mile coastline. Still, don’t expect leisurely swims in the sea. “Don’t forget that it is the Atlantic Ocean, so you are unlikely to get in, as it’s cold,” says Calmeyer. “However, for those who enjoy colder water, Cape Town is fabulous in December and January, with white-sand beaches, abundant water activities, and incredible snorkeling and diving opportunities in the Great African Seaforest” — the giant bamboo kelp forest seen in the documentary "My Octopus Teacher." For wetsuit-clad surfers, summer tends to equal smaller waves — plus wind — while the peak surf season is March to September, when the water is at its most frigid (low 70s). Regardless of the season, Mandy adds, “Be warned: The African sun is harsh, so don’t forget your sunscreen.”

Best Time to Visit for Festivals

Between lively farmers markets in Cape Town and concert series in the Cape Winelands, the pervasive energy in South Africa is festive. The Cape Town Art Fair and Cape Town International Jazz Festival , which both occur each February, are great draws. And I can personally attest that the Summer Sunset Concerts that take place from November through April at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden are captivating affairs worthy of a bountiful BYO picnic. Mandy adds, “The popular concerts offer live music in a picturesque setting beneath Table Mountain.” Harvest season in the Winelands — Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Paarl — spans February and March, and is an exciting and beautiful time to visit both storied iconic estates and up-and-coming young winemakers.

Worst Time to Visit South Africa

South Africa is one of those places that holds its appeal all year long. However, Mandy warns that some travelers could find the peak of summer a bit too hot — though it typically stays in the 70s and only rarely reaches the 90s — and winter temps in remote mountainous regions in the Northern Cape too cold.

Best Time to Visit South Africa: When to Go & When to Avoid!

Home » Blog » South Africa » Best Time to Visit South Africa: When to Go & When to Avoid!

Choosing the best time to visit South Africa can be overwhelming. Especially since each season has its own set of draws (and drawbacks). We’re breaking down exactly what to expect in each season so that you can choose the best time of year to visit based on your travel style and interests.

South African safari

Bursting at the seams with world-class wine, game reserves, surf breaks, and cosmopolitan cities like Cape Town , South Africa has something for any kind of traveler , no matter the season.

This lively country is set in the southern hemisphere, so each of its four distinct seasons are a complete opposite of the north. This means that when everyone in the north has snow days and hot coco, South Africans are taking to the beaches and enjoying hot summer days.

The first step in figuring out the best time to visit South Africa is choosing exactly what season is best for your trip.

Many different factors come into play since many South Africa itineraries include a variety of these activities.

So this begs the question:

When is the best time to visit South Africa?

In short, the best time to visit South Africa is during the shoulder seasons. You can expect favorable, dry weather and fewer crowds during April, May, and September through November.

Sunset Rock Cape Town

Spring is a season to be reckoned with as the weather is nearly perfect and peak for whale watching season.

Summer brings ideal beach weather and exciting festival lineups.

Fall welcomes AfrikaBurn and prime wine harvesting.

Winter boasts the best weather for game drives on safari and world-class surfing competitions.

Truth be told, there is no correct answer. What you plan to do and where you want to go play a large part.

But fear not, we’re here to give you the low-down on each season so you can choose the best time to visit South Africa for YOU .

Answer these questions to get started:

  • What region of the country do you plan to visit?
  • Are you easily bothered by crowds?
  • Are you planning to go on safari in South Africa?
  • Do you prefer to spend your time outdoors at the beach or exploring a new city?
  • Are you planning to do activities like whale watching, scuba diving or surfing?

Thinking about your answers to these questions is going to help you start to determine when to visit South Africa.

Our experience traveling in South Africa

Amanda has visited South Africa in during all the months from November through March

Her experience:

  • My first visit to South Africa was to Cape Town and on Safari at Pilanesberg Game Reserve in November (2008)
  • From January – March (2019) I spent time in Johannesburg, on safari, the Cape Winelands and based in Cape Town
  • I came back in December – March (2020-21) and went on safari at Welgevonden Game Reserve, based in Cape Town and also drove the Garden Route
  • In 2021-22 I returned from December through February to base myself in Cape Town once again (are you picking up on a theme here yet!?)

(fall in the northern hemisphere)

Elephant Safari South Africa

I (Amanda) first traveled to South Africa in November 2008. This is springtime in the southern hemisphere and the weather was great! It was a bit chilly (still long pants and a jacket needed), and got cooler at night. But overall the weather was pleasant, if not a bit windy in the Western Cape.

Would we recommend visiting during spring?

Absolutely! South Africa is beautiful during September- November. The only caveat is the winds pick up during this time in Cape Town (November is typically the windiest month).

(winter in the northern hemisphere)

Llundudno Beach Cape Town

I’ve spent a lot of time in South Africa in recent years during the summer months. There is truly nothing better than escaping winter in the north for the southern hemisphere summer.

Cape Town is alive and buzzing with summertime energy! All of the markets are open, and there are tons of summer-only events and festivals happening all over the country.

Would we recommend visiting during summer?

Absolutely! If you are planning a trip to South Africa, summertime is the time to go! Especially if Cape Town is on your itinerary.

(spring in the northern hemisphere)

Sunset Rock 12 apostles viewsCape Town

I’ve stayed in Cape Town until early fall a few times and found the experience to be really enjoyable. The peak tourism/vacation season in Cape Town is typically winding down after February, and March-April can have some of the best weather.

Prices on accommodation and other things will drop off a bit after peak season and the crowds will begin to thin once more making it easier to enjoy popular destinations.

Would we recommend visiting during fall?

Yes! In fact, staying in South Africa further into the fall is my intention for next year and I am really looking forward to a change of pace with less crowds. Plus, I’m told the weather stays optimal all the way until late-May.

Map of Africa viewpoint

South Africa stretches 2,798 km (1,739 miles) across the entire southern tip of the African continent from its desert border with Namibia and the Atlantic Ocean in the west, to its border with Mozambique hugging the Indian Ocean in the east.

It has two distinct geographical regions: the narrow coastal zone and interior plateau.

Apart from these two key zones, there are eight different biomes spread across the entire country bursting with vibrant plants, wildlife, and spectacular biodiversity.

With so many of these individual ecosystems and terrains, each month of the year gives one, or many, of these areas a chance to shine.

Which is why pinpointing an exact best time to visit South Africa can be so challenging.

For this article, we’ll be focusing on the weather in the mainland coastal zones and interior plateaus, since there is continuity throughout each region and it can give you a good grasp of what to expect weather-wise.

South Africa’s climate is best described as semi-arid and subtropical with weather that’s comparable to that of Southern California.

Divided into two regions, the coast and plateau, each area has opposite rainfall than the other. So when it’s dry in the bush, you can expect it to be wet along the coastlines, and vice versa.

Cape Town & the coasts

Cape Town beaches South Africa

The entire coast of South Africa is influenced by both the cool fronts from the Atlantic Ocean and the warm fronts from the Indian Ocean.

The east coast tends to be wetter and cooler than the west, but each still shares the same yearlong weather patterns.

The coasts experience the most amount of rain during the winter from May to September . Expect daytime temperatures ranging from 4°C/40°F to 17°C/60°F.

From October to April, Cape Town and surrounding areas reach peak weather with sunny, hot, and mostly dry days . Daytime temperatures fluctuate from 24°C/70°F to 30°C/90°F during the peak of summer.

Good to know : If you’re planning on driving the Garden Route , note that it’s in an “in-between” area with a moderate amount of rainfall throughout the year.

Kruger National Park & the plateau

Game reserve South Africa

Within Kruger National Park and other reserves in the bush, you can expect similar temperatures around the region since they all lie on the Central Plateau.

Expect little to no rainfall during the winter months from May to September . The mornings can get quite chilly, 10°C/50°F, and the afternoon temperatures are ideal for spotting The Big 5, 27°C/80°F.

From April to October, temperatures and humidity increase dramatically in the bush and can get unbearably hot, plus afternoon downpours are not uncommon . Peak summer reaches temperatures of 30°C/90°F with brutal humidity.

Below you’ll find a break down of the wet & dry season months in each region:

Stats on South African weather & seasons:

  • Warmest month(s) in South Africa: December – February
  • Coldest month(s) in South Africa: June – August
  • Rainiest month(s) in South Africa: December, January, February (Kruger NP & reserves); June, July, August (Cape Town)
  • Driest month(s) in South Africa: June, July, August (Kruger NP & reserves); December, January, February (Cape Town)
  • Most crowded month(s) in South Africa: December & January (Cape Town); July (Kruger NP & reserves)
  • Least crowded month in South Africa: May

Muizenberg Beach beach huts Cape Town

The long summers in South Africa sweep hot and tropical weather throughout a majority of the country, welcoming the peak tourist season.

December and January get really busy since many local and school holidays happen during these months, so you’ll want to make bookings months in advance.

  • Kruger & reserves : 32°C/90°F averages with even higher peak temperatures; wettest months with torrential downpours
  • Cape Town & coasts : afternoons average 26°C/80°F with cooler mornings; mostly blue skies with occasional rain

Summer months at a glance:

December is the very start of summer with beautiful, sunny weather in the Cape and festivals popping up around the country. Aim for early December to avoid the rush of school vacations later in the month.

January is when most locals head to the coasts and National Parks for the summer holiday. The Western Cape is hot, dry, and perfect for exploring.

February is one of the hottest months in the Cape, bringing perfect beach weather and plenty of crowds. Be mindful of the heat and stay out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day.

March is the last of the summer months and has nice weather for hiking, walking, and beach-bumming as the country moves into fall. Kruger is just out of its rainy season, so the rivers will be raging.

Camps Bay Beach Cape Town at sunset

South Africa in the fall is warm, but not too hot and rainfall is minimal since it’s the shoulder season. This is the ideal time to visit for hiking, backpacking, and doing some real exploring in nature.

As the weather cools down, the summer crowds dwindle, so you can expect prices to be more affordable these months.

Afrika Burn, one of the largest festivals celebrated in the country, happens between May and June. The vineyards in the Cape Winelands are ripe for picking and the weather is perfect for sipping your way around this beautiful region.

  • Kruger & reserves : Cooler mornings and nights, afternoon average of 26°C/80°F; rain dwindles and humidity drops
  • Cape Town & coasts : 10°C/50°F average in the morning, 21°C/70°F in the afternoon; many nice days but rain/clouds increases

Fall months at a glance:

April brings cool weather across South Africa with summer crowds thinning out by the end of the month. It’s the perfect month to visit if you’re combining multiple regions in South Africa.

May starts to cool down as the country moves into winter. There may be snow in the highlands and the weather is dry, giving more ideal conditions for safari. This is one of the coldest months of the year in Cape Town.

Snow dusts the mountains, migrating whales make their way to the coasts, and carpets of wildflowers in Northern Cape and Namaqualand bloom.

While the winters are technically cold, they’re still pretty mild from the warm fronts from the Indian Ocean, so you can still do a bit of exploring this season, but bring layers.

Reserves in the north are bone dry and offer more favorable temperatures than the scorching summers. Not only does this give you more favorable weather for open-safari, but better odds of seeing wildlife.

  • Kruger & reserves : Pleasant temperatures from 10°C/50°F in the morning and 26°C/79°F in the afternoon; rain is extremely rare
  • Cape Town & coasts : Mornings begin at 8°C/46°F and peak in the afternoon around 18°C/64°F; regular rainfall and cloudy skies are common

Winter months at a glance:

June brings cooler temperatures, good chances of rain, and great safari conditions. Be mindful of potential fires in the Cape Winelands.

July is in the middle of South Africa’s low season. Warm and dry conditions can be found in the northern areas, but the Cape can be cool and drizzly. Game viewing in the bush is prime, but pack layers since the mornings will be chilly.

August brings peak wildflowers across the Cape as spring rolls in. The KwaZulu-Natal region is a warm escape from Cape Town this month. Early in the month, the cable car to Table Mountain is closed for maintenance.

September is a peak month for whale watching tours when migration numbers are at their peak. They’re most famously spotted in Hermanus during their whale festival.

  • Kruger & reserves : 14°C/57°F in the morning to 31°C/88°F in the afternoon; rain showers gradually increase through November

Best time to visit South Africa in our opinion…

Cape Peninsula views South Africa

In our opinion, the best time to visit South Africa depends on what you prefer to do.

If hiking and exploring nature is your goal, shoot for March, April or September and October , as you’ll have the best chance of avoiding rain and prime shoulder season weather.

Safari and other wildlife tours are best experienced during the winters from May through September since they have lowest chances of rain. These months offer the best chances of game viewing in the bush and the peak of whale watching season.

For beachgoers, December through February are the best times to visit the coastlines , whereas you may want to avoid June through August, when afternoon showers are common.

To avoid crowds, we recommend you avoid visiting in December & January . Instead choose the shoulder months to still get summer weather, but avoid loads of tourists.

South Africa safari: when to go, what you'll see, where to stay

By Jane Broughton

Great Fish River Lodge

South Africa has a well-deserved reputation for its many design-forward, eco-conscious safari lodges offering every conceivable luxury and almost guaranteed game viewing throughout the year. As a safari destination, South Africa is easy to get to and navigate once on the ground, making it an ideal last-minute romantic getaway for couples or a sunny winter safari for families. And while it remains an excellent choice for first-timers wanting to experience a classic, big five safari, this destination is just as popular with seasoned philanthropists taking annual impact trips supporting innovative, privately funded conservation initiatives to regenerate animal habitat, protect biodiversity and save critically endangered species .

The most sought-after lodges and safari camps are in private conservation areas, within private game reserves scattered across the country, or in the Greater Kruger area, which includes the Kruger National Park. Small and often owner-run, these luxury, light-footprint properties are in hand-picked, scenic locations and offer deeply layered, immersive safari experiences on and off the vehicle led by experienced guides and trackers with an intimate knowledge of the ecosystem in which they’re working. Many privately protected areas share unfenced boundaries with neighbouring tracts of protected land so that animals can roam and establish their territory over a larger space in tune with seasonal changes. Along with exclusive, up-close sightings and a limit on the number of vehicles permitted, other private concession perks include the freedom to drive off-road where permitted, take guided walks and night drives , enjoy remote bush dinners and star bed sleep-outs, and get involved with hands-on conservation. Sustainably managed properties that are fully invested in protecting the environment while maximising the positive economic spinoffs of nature-based tourism to local communities should always be a consideration before booking anything.

When to go to South Africa for safari

Most of the go-to game reserves are in the northeast of South Africa and experience summer rain in thunderstorms followed by a dry winter with cool to chilly nights and warm, clear-skied sunny days ( May to October ). Winter is, therefore, the most popular time to go on safari, when the dry conditions lead to concentrations of animals around reliable water sources. This makes game viewing more predictable and animals easier to track and locate due to sparse vegetation and minimal ground cover. The mild, clear days are great for getting off the vehicle to track and explore the bush on foot. Summer rain radically transforms the bush, and everything explodes with life as the days heat up. Dense thickets and trees in leaf reduce visibility and make game viewing more challenging, but the lush, green vegetation attracts summer migrants and becomes a birder’s paradise. Predator activity increases, too, due to the abundance of baby animals at a time when food is plentiful for all. After the rain, the dust settles and light conditions are excellent for photography. Autumn and spring are good for witnessing the antelope rutting season. An early or late summer safari could be South Africa’s best-kept secret, especially with the add-on of a beach holiday outside of Cape Town ’s busiest time (from mid- December to end- January ). Elsewhere, the semi-arid Karoo and Kalahari are dry and clear-skied in winter and have low rainfall averages in summer but get very hot. In general, off-peak travel is underrated, with benefits including better availability, potential stay-longer, pay-less deals, and the possibility of securing a private vehicle.

Where to go in South Africa for safari

The private conservation areas in and around the Greater Kruger area are synonymous with South Africa’s reputation for delivering epic, up-close predator action interpreted by knowledgeable guides. Kruger shares unfenced boundaries with several private reserves, including the Sabi Sand, where iconic, family-owned properties like Mala Mala , Londolozi , and Singita first put the region on the map thanks to reliable big cat sightings, especially leopards. Further private properties within the Timbavati, Thornybush and Klaserie reserves add thousands of hectares to the Greater Kruger, encouraging natural species migration and collectively securing habitat for many rare and endangered animals. In the northern reaches of the Kruger National Park, Pafuri’s immense flood plains and dense forests are renowned for walking safaris. At the same time, Singita’s privately leased Lebombo concession on the park’s Mozambican border provides strategic protection for rhinos. Further afield, large, private malaria-free reserves like Madikwe, close to the Botswana border, Marataba in the Waterberg, Samara in the Great Karoo, Tswalu in the southern Kalahari, and Kwandwe in the Eastern Cape, provide shelter for an astounding diversity of big game and rare and elusive species, boast breathtaking scenery and offer a choice of intimately scaled lodges for immersive, romantic getaways, secluded, off-grid trails camps for adventurers, and fully staffed, exclusive-use bush villas for multigenerational families .

Beyond Tengile River Lodge

The best lodges to book

Tengile river lodge, sabi sand.

This beautifully modern AndBeyond-run lodge in the Sabi Sand has nine energy-efficient, villa-sized suites – 200 square metres in extent – cleverly concealed in a riverine forest on a bend of the Sand River where elephants often come to feed. Hand-painted botanical print fabrics, recycled stone terrazzo floors, and bespoke throws and rugs add character to the smart, modern interiors, everything angled for soaking in the tranquil views. A glass-walled forest-green marble bathroom leads to an outdoor shower on a private, shaded deck and a big  pool . The lodge’s spa and gym also have a lap pool for training swims - necessary, as the food is delicious.

Best for: Nature-loving aesthetes will appreciate the sleek, glamorous style of this lodge, which champions local, eco-friendly design, and having exclusive access to over 10,000 hectares in the quieter south-east of the Sabi Sand reserve.

Cheetah Plains, Sabi Sand

Electric, solar-powered game-drive vehicles offer a zero-emissions ride and properly quiet encounters with wildlife at this 100 per cent off-grid luxury property in the Sabi Sand. In synch with its sustainable approach to game-viewing, Cheetah Plains uses the latest in grey-water recycling. It powers everything from the air-cons to the temperature-controlled wine cellars in its three exclusive-use lodges on renewable solar energy. Named after legendary big cats in the area, the three exclusive-use lodges have four private guest suites - think glass walls gliding away into raw concrete to bring nature closer, even from the bath. Burnished metal, unpolished stone and solid timber interiors are the counterpart to colourful contemporary South African artworks.

Best for: Silent game drives in fast and efficient electric vehicles, charged off renewable energy, designed by Cheetah Plains’ owner, a former rally driver, to be extra-comfortable with luxury SUV suspension, ergonomically shaped padded bucket seats with built-in seat warmers for chilly winter mornings.

Great Fish River Lodge, Kwandwe Private Game Reserve

Nine gloriously remote, romantic suites with viewing decks and private pools sit above the Great Fish River, which meanders for 30 kilometres through this rugged, 22,000-hectare, privately owned reserve in the malaria-free Eastern Cape province, within driving distance of the Garden Route’s long, sandy beaches and indigenous forests. The breeding ground of the blue crane, Kwandwe has just 30 rooms split across two intimate lodges (Great Fish River being one of them), three exclusive-use villas (ideal for family safaris), and an off-grid tented camp. Exclusivity at up-close sightings of the big five, black rhino, cheetah and smaller, but no less significant, vulnerable and endangered species is amplified by the rugged wilderness setting: extensive open plains interrupted by carbon-storing subtropical thicket-clad hills, securing vital habitat for wildlife that last roamed freely here over 120 years ago.

Best for: A big five safari with a luxury of space and privacy for a romantic getaway, after exploring the Garden Route or Cape Town. Malaria free makes it ideal for families and the elderly, too - multiple generations sharing a fully staffed villa with a private vehicle and guide.

Royal Malewane Farmhouse

The Farmstead, at Royal Malewane, Thornybush Private Game Reserve

On expertly guided drives from this sister property to Royal Malewane’s original lodge, sightings include leopard, cheetah, wild dog, and sizeable elephant and buffalo herds. A Master Tracker leads walks. Increased movement of animals has resulted in a richer game-viewing experience in this increasingly popular privately owned reserve - all because fences were dropped on the eastern boundary with the Timbavati in 2017, opening it up to the Greater Kruger area. Liz Biden’s inimitable riotous style doesn’t hold back in this celebratory lodge with three luxury suites plus a separate villa with space for six additional adults. Like Liz’s newest addition to Royal Malewane, Waterside Lodge, this one features fun Ardmore fabrics, animal print and plush velvets in jewel colours and lots of South African art. In summer, deep verandas encourage lazing outdoors on swinging daybeds or one of the loungers submerged in the pool’s shallow end. The local Moletele community own the land here and benefits financially from the lodge’s success.

Best for: House parties, especially if the Biden family’s original bush villa, Africa House, is too big – newly renovated, its six suites share two pools, a spa treatment suite and gym.

Malaria-Free Big 5 Safari in Madikwe

The best time for safari in south africa, our safari expert recommends.

Blessed with incredible geographical diversity, South Africa is truly a year-round destination. Each region offers something unique and it is always a good season somewhere in this diverse country.

The overall best time to go on safari in South Africa is between May to September. This is South Africa’s dry season, but also low season as temperatures drop for winter; don’t underestimate how long temperatures can fall overnight, particularly away from the coast. Wildlife is easier to spot in these months, as vegetation is lower and animals gather around waterholes.

It is possible to visit any of South Africa’s national parks during these months, but consider when to go if you plan on combining safari with other routes. For example, if combining safari with Cape Town, consider the summer months of November to March. For whale watching on the Western Cape, visit between June and November. For year-round sunshine and wildlife watching, KwaZulu-Natal is your best bet.

South Africa's best safari seasons

In general, the southern hemisphere summer of November to March is the wettest season, while the winter months between April and October are dry and mild. However, this is reversed in the southwest of the country around Cape Town, where the rain falls in the middle of winter.

Rainfall also varies dramatically from east to west; in parts of the Northern Cape and into the southern Kalahari, annual rainfall is less than 200mm, while Limpopo and Mpumalanga in the northeast often receive around five times that amount.

The east and west sides of the country are at the mercy of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans respectively. At the Cape of Good Hope, the warm Agulhas current of the Indian Ocean meets the cold Benguela current of the Atlantic, meaning the water temperature can be four degrees cooler on the west side of the Cape compared to the east.

South Africa's best months for safari

January is hot and dry on the Cape, and this coupled with South African school holidays makes the region very popular at this time of year; school holidays periods ripple out across the country throughout the year, creating mini high seasons, so always check when they fall. The Garden Route is stunning at the beginning of the year, with the dry weather drawing animals to come and drink at water holes. Baby penguins are born on Boulders Beach on the Cape in January and February .

March marks the start of autumn in South Africa but temperatures remain high. Rains often fall on Kruger at this time, thickening the bush and making wildlife harder to spot. Instead, head for the beaches in the south and soak up some late summer sun.

April and May are cooler still and can be an excellent time to visit the famous national parks, as rutting season begins and larger animals are out in force.

As the southern hemisphere winter takes hold the Cape can become cool and drizzly, so instead make for the north and east where temperatures are warmer and conditions drier, with July a great time to spot the major animals in national parks. If you do stay south, June is migration season for southern right whales along the Cape’s southern coast.

August brings spring to South Africa and gorgeous wildflowers bloom on the west coast until the early summer.

September is birthing season in the national parks and as the weather warms up across the country, this is a perfect month to combine regions before the summer rains set in.

This tail-end of the dry season has other advantages: as waterholes dry out, animals are drawn to the last remaining water sources, making them easier to find and see. Whales calve in Walker Bay from September until October .

South Africa is host to a number of festivals throughout the year, starting on January 2nd in Cape Town with the Kaapse Klopse, Cape Town’s answer to Rio’s Carnival. The highlight is the Tweede Nuwe Jaar (Second New Year) street parade where you can watch hundreds of partygoers sing and dance past in extravagant costumes.

The autumn brings harvest season in the wine regions, and there is no better way to celebrate than the Robertson Valley Hands-On Harvest, a three-day wine and food festival in March. If that is not enough indulgence for you, the Knysna Oyster festival takes place every June or July.

Away from the dinner table, South Africa’s arts scene offers up plenty of choice, from the Cape Town Jazz Festival in March to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in July, as well as Kirstenbosch’s famous series of summer concerts in November.

If all that sounds too mainstream for your tastes, head to Afrikaburn, South Africa’s answer to Burning Man, a counter-culture festival held for five days in the autumn in the Tankwa Karoo in the Northern Cape.

best safari months in south africa

You'll find something exciting to do in South Africa at any time of year © pixdeluxe / Getty Images

From dynamic Cape Town and cosmopolitan Johannesburg to staggering expanses of wilderness such as the Kalahari and the Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa has a breadth of experiences that is hard to match .

The variety of the landscape , weather and festival seasons throughout the country means the best time to visit will depend on what you want to do when you get there.

In general, the climate in South Africa is warmer in the north and cooler in the south. You'll also find different weather on the coasts compared to the elevated plateau that makes up most of the country, where it tends to be drier. Usually, the Indian Ocean coast feels more tropical, while the weather on the Atlantic coast is milder, though cold fogs and hot desert winds can still roll in.

Cape Town and the Western Cape are unique in having their rainy season in the winter (June to August). In the rest of the country, the rains arrive during the southern hemisphere summer (November through March), but the deluges rarely last for long and give you the chance to photograph dramatic thunderstorms.

However, most visitors' biggest consideration is the vibrant festival calendar and the annual migrations and breeding seasons for the country's diverse wildlife populations. Here's everything you need to know about picking the best time for your South African adventure.

A man dressed in a white suit with a red, white and blue sash at the Cape Town Street Parade

November to March is peak festival season, with peak prices

November to March is summertime in South Africa, with daytime highs reaching 32°C (90°F), often with quite a lot of humidity. If you’re looking to visit during the peak season, planning ahead is essential. Accommodations in coastal areas and national parks are often booked out months in advance, and popular vacation spots see accommodation prices rise by 50% or more.

That said, if you have the budget to travel in the high season, you can enjoy a host of festivals and events. AFROPUNK , a massive international multi-day music festival that draws artists from all over the world, kicks off in December. Held annually on January 2, the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival (known locally as Kaapse Klopse) is a high-spirited street parade dating from the mid-1800s with important links to overcoming apartheid and South Africa's long history of enslavement.

Cape Town’s Pride Festival is held in late February or early March, followed by the Cape Town Cycle Tour , which brings in cycling enthusiasts from all over the globe. March also sees the  Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees , one of South Africa’s largest arts festivals, held at Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape.

The Lowveld – made up of open grassland and woodland areas between 150m and 610m (492ft and 2001ft) above sea level – is steamy and warm, and the landscapes are lush and green; the Highveld, at a higher altitude, is slightly cooler. This time of year is especially good for walking and beach bumming in the Western Cape.

April, May, September and October mean lower prices and great wildlife watching

South Africa's shoulder seasons see smaller crowds and several important festivals – including April’s Splashy Fen Music Festival in Durban. The big lure in the fall (April–May) is wildlife watching, as the tail end of the dry summer weather brings wildlife out into the open. The rutting season for impala – one of South Africa’s most abundant antelopes – begins in April, with displays of dominance (like the clashing of horns) increasing as the days get shorter.

The spring months of September and October bring the best chances for cetacean encounters in whale-watching centers such as Hermanus . Wildflower season peaks in late August in the north and early September in the south, but blooms can appear from July depending on the rains, and the spectacle continues into October if it’s not too hot.

June to August is the best time for budget travelers

The South African winter from June to August brings lower prices (except for safaris) and smaller crowds. This is the rainy season in Cape Town and the Western Cape, but there’s still plenty of sunshine around. Look out for wallet-friendly winter deals at Cape Town restaurants.

Elsewhere in the country, winters are much drier, and conditions are ideal for a safari. Be prepared, though, for chilly nights and cold early morning game drives. Top winter festivals include the National Arts Festival (June) in the Eastern Cape and Knysna’s 10-day Oyster Festival in June or July.

South Africa's game reserves are best in the winter months

Rain can be an obstacle to your travels if you plan to go on safari. Northern game reserves such as Kruger National Park are driest from May to September, during the South African winter. While you might not have the lush backgrounds to your photos that you would in the spring and summer, wildlife is often easier to spot because the vegetation dies back and animals congregate around water holes.

The chilly winter nights also mean fewer mosquitoes, but you'll need to bring layers to keep warm during dawn game drives. For safaris in the Western Cape, the South African summer months are drier, but this coincides with the busy Christmas period and South Africa’s summer school holidays.

Peak whale-watching is in September and October

Though whales and dolphins can be seen year-round off South Africa’s southern and eastern coasts, September and October are the peak cetacean-spotting months. Between June and November, southern right whales and humpbacks migrate to and from Antarctica to breed and have their babies in the warmer waters off Mozambique and Madagascar. May to June also sees a massive run of sardines that attracts whales, dolphins, sharks and sea birds ( Durban is an excellent base to watch the spectacle).

While you’ll see more from a whale-watching boat, whales often come close enough to the shore to be spotted from land. This is particularly so near the town of Hermanus , celebrated by the World Wildlife Fund as one of the world's top whale-watching destinations, where whales can be seen as early as April. Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth or PE) on the Eastern Cape is known as the world bottlenose dolphin capital, and pods are frequently seen between January and June.

When is the best time to visit South Africa?

Clifton Beach in Cape Town South Africa

The best time to visit South Africa depends on where you want to go and what you want to do on holiday. The temperatures range based on where in the country you are visiting, with the north seeing warmer temperatures than the south of the country. The Western Cape is famed for experiencing rainy seasons in the winter, but the Indian Ocean coastline provides warmer and more equatorial temperatures. Needless to say, it's important to plan.

It is cheapest to visit South Africa during the winter months (June to September) unless you are planning a safari , as winter is peak safari season, with the drier climate making it ideal for wildlife spotting.

If you’re looking for a more detailed guide, look at our guide to planning our first South Africa safari .

When is the best time to go whale watching in South Africa?

Winter is the best whale-watching season in South Africa when most pods travel to and from the Antarctic to breed and calve off the waters of Mozambique and Madagascar. The sightings start as early as May and can last into early December, with Hermanus being a favourite for whale-watching, especially in September.

Top tip : The migration also coincides with the Sardine Run, between May and July, where the sardines spawn in the South African waters, attracting super-pods of whales and dolphins, diving birds and even sharks. We recommend setting up a tour off the coast of Port Saint Johns .

Best Times to Visit South Africa for a Safari

The best season to go on safari in South Africa is May to September when it's dry and animals congregate around water sources, making them easy to spot. Clear skies and no need to shelter from the rain (for animals or visitors) are of course helpful factors too.

Kruger National Park is a top destination for safaris, and, as the dry season draws on, vegetation becomes sparser and sparser, and so animals become more visible. You'll have better chances of spotting lions, rhinos, elephants, leopards, buffalos, and zebras in the middle and end of the dry season.

Best Times to Visit South Africa for Whale Watching

To witness the spectacular southern right whales in South Africa, plan your trip from June to October . However, it's optimal to visit between August to October when whale sightings are at their peak. The Hermanus Whale Festival also takes place during this season, usually in late September or early October.

During this time, these whales migrate from the Antarctic to the coast of South Africa to mate and calf. Besides Hermanus, False Bay, and Plettenberg Bay are the best places to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

Best Times to Visit South Africa for Beach Holidays

The best times to visit South Africa for enjoying its beaches are during the summer months of December to February . During this time, you can enjoy the warm and sunny weather, perfect for relaxing on the beautiful beaches along the coastline.

This period is also the peak season when many travelers choose to travel to South Africa, resulting in increased costs and crowds. Contact us for an early booking to ensure availability and a competitive price.

The peak tourist season in South Africa is from November to March , coinciding with the summer months, which are perfect for many (northern hemisphere) travelers who seek the warmer climes of the African continent for a winter respite. December and January get really busy since many local and school holidays happen during these months.

The South African winter, from June to August, is the travel off-season, bringing the lowest prices (except for safaris) and least crowds.

If you want to avoid the crowds and still enjoy pleasant weather, the best time to visit is in the shoulder seasons of spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May).

The worst times for you to visit South Africa largely depend on your interests and preferences. Generally, the months of January and February can be uncomfortably hot and humid, especially in the northern parts of the country.

Additionally, the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal regions are susceptible to heavy rainfall during the summer months. If you're planning on visiting the Cape Peninsula, the winter months (June to August) can also be quite rainy and cold.

Taking a private tour would make your trip easier and more worry-free at any time , but is especially helpful in the bad weather months.

South Africa Weather in January: Hot and Dry

January is an ideal time for beach holidays anywhere along the South African coast. Cape Town and the Western Cape are hot and dry, with temperatures ranging from 25 to 30°C (77 to 86°F).

Kruger National Park experiences high temperatures, typically from 30 to 35°C (86 to 95°F), but be prepared for occasional rainstorms. Game viewing in the park can be a bit challenging, but it's a quieter time with lush greenery and adorable baby animals.

South Africa Weather in February: Hottest Month

During February, South Africa experiences one of its hottest months. However, the coastal towns are fortunate to have refreshing sea breezes that help to cool things down.

This month is quite popular among tourists, so it's advisable to make hotel reservations well in advance to ensure availability.

South Africa Weather in March: End of the Summer

March falls towards the end of the summer season in South Africa. Coastal areas experience average temperatures ranging from 20°C (68°F) to 28°C (82°F), which are ideal for beach activities. Inland regions, such as Johannesburg, tend to have temperatures ranging from 15°C (59°F) to 26°C (79°F).

As the rainy season comes to a close, game viewing in popular reserves like Kruger Park becomes more accessible. The thick vegetation of summer starts to clear, making it easier to spot a diverse range of wildlife.

South Africa Weather in April: Mild Weather, Fewer Crowds

April is a good time to visit South Africa. The weather is mild with less rainfall. Coastal areas generally enjoy temperatures between 18°C (64°F) and 25°C (77°F), while inland regions are slightly cooler.

It's a great time for wildlife viewing as vegetation diminishes, and there are fewer crowds compared to the summer months.

South Africa Weather in May: Great for Safaris

May is a wonderful time to explore the country as the peak summer crowds have subsided, allowing for a more serene atmosphere. The weather remains warm and dry throughout the various regions. It's important to note that evenings can be chilly, so it's advisable to pack accordingly.

Moreover, safari excursions during this month are often exceptional, with wildlife sightings reaching their peak period.

South Africa Weather in June: Arrival of Winter

South Africa Weather in July: Whale Watching Season

The Western Cape and the Northern Cape regions start to enter the spring season and come alive with blooming flowers.

While the Cape and Gauteng can be chilly during this time, it is perfect time to enjoy the exceptional game viewing opportunities in Kruger and other reserves, as animals are more active and visible.

Additionally, August is the low season for tourism, meaning fewer crowds and more availability at accommodations and attractions.

South Africa Weather in August: Great for Safaris

South africa weather in september: excellent for safaris and whale watching.

For an unforgettable safari experience, game parks like Shamwari, Phinda, and Kruger offer some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities.

South Africa Weather in October: Quiet Month with Good Weather

October is a stunning month in South Africa, with temperatures beginning to rise across the country, but the rains are yet to come in the north.

It's a great month to visit if you're combining multiple regions in South Africa. You can enjoy beach holidays along the South African coast, take safaris in Kruger Park, and view whales at Hermanus and the Western Cape.

Accommodation in tourist areas is usually quiet in October, but may fill up during the spring school holiday in late September/early October.

South Africa Weather in November: Start of the Rainy Season

As temperatures rise across the country, Kruger National Park and KwaZulu-Natal experience the start of the rainy season. Late afternoon thunderstorms not only bring relief from the heat but also offer a remarkable sight.

This month is also the last chance to witness the whale season in the Western Cape seas before the whales begin their migration northwards.

South Africa Weather in December: Busy for Beach Holidays

December in South Africa is a busy time, so it's necessary to book hotels and excursions well in advance.

Cape Town and the Western Cape are hot by day, cooler at night, and dry. It is great for beach holidays along the coast.

Kruger Park and its surroundings are hot during the day, warm at night, and dry. Game viewing can be challenging due to animals dispersing away from water sources, but the lush greenery and clear skies provide excellent conditions for photography safaris.

South Africa is on the whole a dry, sunny country. Overall, the best time to visit South Africa is typically during the dry, warm months of autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November). You'll find during this window pleasant weather for outdoor activities and wildlife viewing, while avoiding the crowds and higher prices of the peak summer season.

That said, when considering when to go to South Africa, you need to take into account the country’s distinct climatic zones. Though South Africa on the most part is known for its warm to hot temperatures, the climate does vary a bit depending on the region.

In Cape Town and the Garden Route coastal belt, summers tend to be warm, mild. However, rain can fall at any time of the year and winter days can be cold and wet. Subtropical KwaZulu-Natal has warm, sunny winters and tepid seas. In common with the Lesotho highlands, the province’s Drakensberg range has misty days in summer and mountain snow in winter.

Johannesburg and Pretoria lie on the highveld plateau and have a near-perfect climate. You can expect hot summer days frequently broken by dramatic thunder showers, and dry winters with chilly nights. East of Johannesburg, the lowveld, which includes Kruger and much of Swaziland, is subject to similar summer and winter rainfall as the highveld. However, its considerably lower altitude results in far greater extremes of temperature.

Generally speaking, the peak tourist season in South Africa is during the summer months of December to February. This is when the weather is warmest and driest, and for many a great time for outdoor activities such as safaris, beach holidays, and hiking.

You'll find that during this time popular tourist destinations such as Cape Town, Kruger National Park, and the Garden Route tend to be bustling with visitors. Accommodation and attractions may be more crowded and prices may be higher during this period, and you'll certainly want to book as far ahead as possible.

Some specific destinations in South Africa will have their own peak seasons. In Hermanus, renowned for its excellent whale watching opportunities, the peak time is usually from July to November when southern right whales migrate to the area to calve and nurse their young. Similarly, for shark cage diving enthusiasts , the peak season in places like Gansbaai is typically from June to September when the waters are cooler, attracting larger numbers of great white sharks.

What is the rainy season in South Africa?

The rainy season in South Africa varies depending on region. While rain can fall any time of the year across the Cape, showers typically hit Cape Town and the Western Cape from June to August. On the other hand, the northern regions tend to be rainy from November to February and dry from May to October.

Most when planning a safari trip to South Africa will aim for the dry season that spans from May to September. During these months, animals gather around water sources — which makes sightings easier. This is a great time of year for game drives as the weather brings cooler (and more comfortable) temperatures, especially during the mornings and evenings when animals are most active.

If you're particularly keen on spotting newborn animals, you’ll want to plan your visit for May or June, which is the birthing season for many species. July to September on the other hand offers prime opportunities to encounter predators like lions and leopards, as this is when they are the most active.

If you’re traveling to South America for birdwatching or photography, you might enjoy the low wet season from October to April. This time is known for great birdwatching due to the breeding activity, lush landscapes, and diverse bird populations — including resident species and migratory birds from Europe and Asia.

No matter when you choose to go to South Africa, you’re likely to have your trip fall during one of this country’s lively festivals. South Africa is a melting pot of cultures, and its festivals reflect this diversity, celebrating everything from music and dance to food and heritage. Here are some festivals and events to consider when deciding when to visit South Africa:

Cape Town Pride Pageant (Late Feb)

Series of LGBTQ-themed events over a week, kicking off with a pageant at which Mr and Miss Cape Town are crowned, and taking in a bunch of parties and a street parade.

Safari in South Africa

There are many places to go on safari in South Africa and Kruger National Park wins it all. However, there are, many other reserves – privately owned- with the same thrill.

A major highlight is that Kruger’s surroundings have phenomenal views of sighting the big five. Rhinos, aggressive African elephants, leopard, lions, buffalos and leopards freely roam the park.

Taking reputation as one of the best safari in Africa destinations, camps, lodges and other luxury accommodation facilities crown your safari experience.

So, if you are piecing together your bucketlist, you can bet on a memorable experience with a safari in South Africa.

What is the Best Month to go on Safari in South Africa?

September is the ideal month to visit South Africa in order to take advantage of a variety of the country’s attractions.

Whether you travel to South Africa from the west or the east, your purpose dictates if the timing is right or not. Here is what I mean. The country’s eastern flank is more suited to the cooler months, while the west is beautiful in the summer (November to April) (May to October).

Like stated above, your interest or purpose of visit dictates when to visit . For instance, from November to February, the Garden Route is mild and dry. But September and October are the best months to see whales.

If you don’t mind the occasional downpour, the best time to visit South Africa for bird watching in the north is from November to February. For the best safari in South Africa, visit during the milder winter months (May to September). The wildlife viewing opportunities are excellent then.

Summer months of November to February at the Cape are pleasant and dry. September and October double up as the best months to go for whale watching.

Overall, this Southern African country is dry and sunny. Most things here are designed for warm weather so when the cold season comes, you feel it to depth.

In the southern hemisphere, midwinter occurs in June and July; temperatures occasionally fall below zero. Be ready for minimum temperatures averaging 4°C in Johannesburg, 7°C in Cape Town, and 11°C in Durban in winter.

The country closes down for its annual break during midwinter in December and January. So, consider the various climatic zones when planning your visit.

How Much is a Safari in South Africa?

On average, safari costs $4,500 to $5,000 per person. For a classic safari in South Africa experience the baseline cost is per person is between $7,000 and $8,000.

Worth to note is the following five factors determine the cost of any safari trips in Africa.

  • How many people are involved?
  • Season – is it peak or off peak?
  • What are your preferences?
  • What sort of accommodation are you looking for?
  • What is your travel destination?

Where is Better for Safari Kenya or South Africa?

Kenya and South Africa are two of the most popular destinations to visit for a scenic wildlife adventure. The big question is, though, which of these countries gives you the best safari experience?

Well, both countries win in different fronts when it comes to adventure. The answer to this question varies from one wanderlust to the other.

Conversely, Safari in South Africa or Tanzania applies the same rationale. Again, it all boils down to personal preferences. In a nutshell, Kenya wins in the following:

Wildlife Experience

The road network in Kenyan parks and reserves is better than that in South Africa. Also, more reserves and parks give visitors wildlife diversity.

Camping Cost

Kenya is an excellent camping choice as it is a bit wilder than South Africa. You feel more connected to nature here than in South Africa.

The Swahili people add a fascinating cultural flavor to Kenya’s historic ports. It also has amazing ruins from the Middle Ages which tells a tall tale of the pre-colonial era.

On the other hand, safari in South Africa wins in the following categories.

Budget-friendly

South Africa is more budget-friendly than Kenya when it comes to accommodation in luxurious lodges. It beats Kenya’s pricing and also on the DIY-safari front.

Lower Risk for Tropical Diseases

South Africa presents a much lower danger of catching malaria, bilharzia, and other tropical diseases. It’s ideal for families, first-time safari visitors, and other health-conscious travelers.

As a matter of fact, South Africa is the only country in Africa to boast of several malaria-free safari destinations.

More Family-friendly

Kenya is not quite as family-friendly as South Africa. Both nations have beautiful coastlines but the south wins with better infrastructure accommodating families.

How Long Does a South African Safari Take?

A safari in South Africa will take five to seven days. This is the best schedule to explore Kruger National Park and other famed wildlife sanctuaries here.

In addition, you can combine a thorough safari experience with a wider range of other locations and activities in four to six days.

However it can also take less than five days depending on your itinerary and preference.

This is the best time to take an African safari

Melissa Klurman

Lions and elephants and cheetahs, oh my! For nature lovers, an African safari is the ultimate immersive getaway. Safaris offer a combination of wildlife encounters and luxurious lodges, incredible thrills and peaceful, unplugged wilderness.

Although traveling to the African bush is a great experience any time of year, there are definitely more advantageous times for wildlife spotting. For example, in East Africa, you may want to time a trip to coincide with the great wildebeest and zebra migration. In Southern Africa, a trip at the same time most babies are born offers some incredibly special moments watching newborns with their mamas.

I've visited Africa more than a dozen times and have gone on safaris in six different countries, visiting every season.

While I've seen incredible wildlife — including lion cubs on a December trip to Botswana and spectacular herds of elephants in Zimbabwe on a May safari — in the nonhigh seasons, I've also dealt with some pretty extreme weather as well. For instance, I have experienced intense rain storms in November and freezing temperatures in June.

Sometimes the best time to take a safari is when you have flexibility in your schedule or can get the best rates. However, if you want to plan around the absolute best time to spot wildlife, read below to find out when to go.

best safari months in south africa

What months are best to go on an African safari?

The African continent is massive, comprising 54 unique nations and nearly 2,000 languages. Most safaris take place in two main savanna regions of the African continent: Southern and East Africa. The Southern Africa region includes South Africa , Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. East Africa contains the safari destinations of Kenya , Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda.

Most of these destinations have one thing in common: They're located in the Southern Hemisphere. Even the ones that straddle the equator, such as Uganda, follow the Southern Hemisphere's weather patterns.

This means the seasons on safari will be the opposite of what you're most likely used to at home. Summer is December through February, winter is June through August, spring is September to November and autumn is March through May.

The Southern Hemisphere's winter and early spring — roughly June through October — is usually considered safari high season because it's the driest time of year. Wildlife gathers around watering holes when water is scarce elsewhere, Mark Nolting of Africa Adventure Company says; this makes it easier to see many species in one location.

In East Africa, the best time to go on an African safari is during the great migration, when thousands of antelope and zebra move in massive herds to find water. That season is roughly December to March and then again from June to mid-November.

There are some exceptions to this rule though.

In Botswana seeing wildlife from a mokoro, a type of dugout canoe, is a popular activity. That's why it's necessary to visit when there's water in the passageways. The dry season provides the same viewing opportunities as above, so you should be able to spot game anytime.

The private reserves in South Africa also defy seasonality; game is so dense in areas, such as the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, that you should be able to spot wildlife no matter the month or season.

When is the best weather for a safari?

The dry weather of the winter season, roughly June through September, is often considered the best weather for a safari. Note: It can be quite cold after the sun sets, so bring a hat, fleece and gloves to keep warm during early morning game drives (though most safari lodges will provide blankets and hot beverages, too).

The "green season," as the rainier summer months are often called, is usually also the hottest time of year. At this time, you'll encounter the most insects, including mosquitos, in the bush.

Shoulder season — the times between the high season and green season, March to May and October to December — usually offers moderate temperatures and just an occasional storm. This time can be a great option for travelers since this is when you can get better pricing while still enjoying prime wildlife viewing.

Is there one good time to go for seeing wildlife?

We're here to tell you that no matter what time of the year you go to Africa, you are guaranteed to see wildlife. The density and ease of spotting may change with the months and seasons, and some species will be easier to spot at certain times of year than others. However, there will always be free-roaming animals large and small if you visit the African bush.

That said, some times have a bit more to offer than others in terms of wildlife viewing.

The easiest time to spot wildlife — meaning you'll spend less time searching during your morning and afternoon game drive and more time watching the animals — is during the dry season. This coincides with the Southern Hemisphere's winter months, June through September, and usually reaches into October. During this period animals will be searching for water and will often congregate in the same location around a water hole or stream.

Spring, roughly October through December, is another prime time to visit. This is when many animals have babies, and the opportunity to see these newborns in the wild is truly a special treat. It's also when the foliage bursts into bloom and migratory avian life return to their leafy homes.

Summer brings denser foliage and a more vivid landscape, and for twitchers (birders, as they're known on safari), visiting this time of year offers big rewards. It's harder to spot wildlife with a large amount of dense growth, though, so you may need to spend another day or two on safari to tick off all the wildlife you're hoping to see.

There are numerous countries around Africa (and really, throughout the entire world) for a safari. But South Africa is an optimal destination if you really want to see the Big 5 (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo). According to the Africa Wildlife Foundation, the country comes in as sixth among the most megadiverse countries (these countries contain a large percentage of the world’s species — both flora and fauna). South Africa is also home to some of the largest populations of endangered species, like black and white rhinos.

However, narrowing down where to go with 40+ game reserves and national parks can be challenging. This article will break out all the logistics and information you need to know to plan your perfect safari in South Africa.

Most visitors should pick the best time of year for a South African safari: May to September. During this dry season, many of the country’s most famous game reserves are located around Kruger and in the KwaZulu-Natal province. Besides avoiding downpours, you’ll probably see more wildlife, as many animals come out of hiding to gather in search of food and water (resources are scarce during the dry months), which means they’re easier to spot.

However, the dry season in the Western Cape is the opposite time of year, with the best times to visit between November and March.

If you plan to visit both areas, consider a shoulder-season time like October, where the rains may not yet be out in full force around Kruger and its surroundings, but you’ll still have pleasant weather in the Cape.

Safari elephants

According to SANBI (South African National Biodiversity Institute), there are more than 100,000 species of animals, plants, and fungi in the country . Besides the aforementioned Big 5, visitors should look for animals like cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wild dogs, ostriches, wildebeest, monkeys, jackals, and so much more. Plant diversity is also worth noting, as you can spot South African favorites like colorful king proteas and baobab trees.

What to look for on a safari in South Africa also depends on where you go. Certain reserves or national parks may be home to specific animal species, so look carefully at each destination to ensure you’ll see the wildlife you hope for. As always, it’s important to understand that these destinations aren’t zoos . There isn’t a guarantee you’ll see certain animals roaming about in the wild, but it’s likely in most spots on this list.

South Africa Safari Logistics

Planning a safari to South Africa isn’t as complicated as you may think. First, you’ll want to decide where to go using the destinations on this list. From there, work backward to see where you’ll need to fly and begin organizing travel to get there.

If you’re looking for nonstop flights to South Africa, you have a few options, especially if you’re based in the eastern U.S. You can fly nonstop to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) from Atlanta (ATL) on Delta and from New York (JFK) on South African Airways, a Star Alliance partner. You can also fly to Cape Town (CPT) from Newark (EWR) on United. There are ways to maximize using your points and miles to fly to South Africa , so consider all your options before booking.

Once you’ve received South Africa, the next step is to get to your safari. If your particular safari accommodation doesn’t offer charter flights, you can fly to the gateways for parks like Kruger or Sabi Sands to airports like Hoedspruit Airport (HDS) and Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP). Skukuza Airport (SZK) is a tiny airport inside Kruger National Park. After you’ve landed in the bush, you can arrange ground transport for pickup to take you to your safari accommodation or rent a car.

Keep an eye out when flying in and out of these spots. I’ve seen lions and other wildlife dashing through the savannah during landing and takeoff at these airports.

Practicality when packing for a safari is important. Besides all the items you’d typically need on a trip away from home, bring the following on your South Africa safari adventure:

  • Khaki or natural-colored clothing
  • Hat, sunglasses, and sunblock
  • Waterproof windbreaker with a hood
  • Layers for chilly evenings
  • Insect repellent
  • Medication — you may not be able to get to a pharmacy easily when in the bush

Families should know that small children are often not allowed on safaris. Check with your accommodation to see what ages are allowed. The minimum age is usually 8 , but some spots prohibit those under 12 or 16.

Check the CDC to see what vaccines you should have before traveling to South Africa for a safari. You won’t need the yellow fever vaccine if you’re coming straight from the U.S., but you may want to consider malaria tablets, depending on your South African destination . Malaria tablets can be hard on the system, but some game reserves claim to be malaria-free. Check the area you plan to visit to see if you need malaria pills.

You should also visit the U.S. State Department’s website , which can alert you of any travel advisories and visa requirements. U.S. passport holders don’t need a visa when visiting South Africa but will need 2 consecutive empty passport pages per entry; otherwise, the country denies entry.

Here’s Where To Go on a Safari in South Africa

Consider these top national parks and game reserves when planning your South African safari.

Lions at Kruger

Kruger National Park is one of the most popular places to visit for a South African safari. And just how big is Kruger National Park? It encompasses nearly 5 million acres (around 8,000 square miles) of bush, home to nearly 150 mammals and more than 500 bird species. The park itself is about the size of the state of New Jersey, to put things in perspective, though most say that the southern areas of the park have the best wildlife viewing.

Visitors can do self-driving tours of the park , as road conditions and signage are decent (you’ll have to pay about $6 per adult to enter one of the 9 entrance gates), but it may be best to stay at a lodge or camp that offers safaris. Expert guides know exactly where to spot the best wildlife and can also provide information about the park and its wildlife that you may not know otherwise. Going with a guide also means adhering to important safety procedures, as guides are trained in skills and situations you may not be familiar with — wild animals can be unpredictable.

The park offers affordable lodges and rest camp options, but if you’re looking for luxury, Singita’s Lebombo Lodge has a stunning clifftop location overlooking the N’wanetsi River.

If you choose the self-driving option, rent a 4×4 or taller vehicle for better animal viewing angles. For safety reasons, don’t disturb the animals in any way — approach slowly so as not to scare or spook wildlife. Never get out of your vehicle (this is only permitted at certain viewpoints or rest areas), and don’t feed animals.

Sabi Sands Game Reserve

Sabi Sands Game Reserve is a private game reserve that backs right up to Kruger National Park (there’s an unfenced border between the 2 game reserves), spanning around 160,000 acres. This means that wildlife can wander and roam between the 2 parks easily , increasing your chances of spotting more animals.

While you can spot the Big 5, Sabi Sands is famous for its leopard sightings . So, if you’re dying to catch these spotted cats in action, this reserve may be right for you.

It’s also particularly apt for luxury travelers. Since day visitors aren’t allowed, you must stay in one of the lodges in Sabi Sands to access the park. While lodge rates vary, this isn’t the best spot for budget travelers. In most cases, your safari lodge can help you organize transfers to enter through one of the park’s 3 entrance gates: Shaw’s Gate, Newington Gate, or Gowrie Gate .

Plan to stay in the Ulusaba Private Game Reserve , part of the western Sabi Sands section owned by Sir Richard Branson. It’s home to Rock Lodge , an intimate safari hotel part of the Virgin Limited Edition portfolio, perched along dramatic rocks overlooking the expansive savannah.

Sabi Sands is special because guides can drive off-road to follow animals, which isn’t permitted at the nearby Kruger National Park. This means you might be able to get a closer glance at wildlife that’s not on the main roads.

Wild dogs Madikwe

The fifth-largest game reserve in Africa , Madikwe Game Reserve is a lesser-known game reserve under a 5-hour drive from Johannesburg for those ready for a road trip adventure. If you want to fly there, it’s actually best to fly into the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (GBE) in Botswana’s capital, Gaborone, and then drive an hour to the reserve.

Madikwe Game Reserve is home to wild dogs, the famous aardwolf, and the Big 5 — featuring 66 mammal species. Do know the reserve has an electric perimeter fence to keep animals contained.

The private game reserve doesn’t allow day trippers, so if you want to take a safari here, you must book one of the lodges within the park’s premises. While many of the lodges are more luxurious, there is 1 eco bush camp and family accommodation option for those with kids. We recommend Jaci’s Tree Lodge , complete with outdoor, wood-fired hot tubs so you can soak and relax as you admire wildlife from the treetops.

Madikwe Game Reserve is known as a malaria-free area of South Africa, ideal for travelers who don’t want to deal with malaria prevention.

Phinda

Phinda Private Game Reserve , also known as &BEYOND Phinda, is owned by luxury safari outfitter &BEYOND (known for having some of the best safari lodges in South Africa). The reserve is home to more than 70,000 acres that encompass 7 different habitats, including 1,000 acres of African sand forest, which is rare.

Luxury travelers head to Phinda for a more intimate safari experience, as the park has limited lodges and safari vehicles. Just 6 high-end properties are located on the reserve, and visitors can expect to see the Big 5 — sometimes close up. The park also has more than 400 bird species. The sand forest section is home to the suni and the red forest duiker, both types of small antelopes that you can’t see in many other destinations.

If you’re wondering which is the best Phinda Lodge, it depends on what you’re looking for. We love the far-flung views from the Phinda Rock Lodge , where suites have private plunge pools. Those intrigued by the rarity of the sand forest may prefer the Phinda Forest Lodge , which features floor-to-ceiling glass windows so you can admire your surroundings from both outside and indoors.

Timbavati

At more than 130,000 acres, this reserve lies within Kruger National Park, an unfenced area where wildlife can roam freely between the 2 parks. You can self-drive through the park or stay at one of 22 different lodges and camps within the reserve. Consider staying at Simbavati River Lodge and spot animals like elephants sipping from the lodge’s onsite watering hole as you sip your tea or coffee at breakfast from the lodge’s dining deck.

Visitors can access Timbavati Private Nature Reserve by flying into the Hoedspruit Airport (HDS) and driving through the main Timbavati Enkhulu Gate (note there’s a fee to drive in, but your accommodation may cover this if you’re staying within the park).

Besides spotting the Big 5, keep an eye out for white lions, which tend to hang out within the park’s borders. In contrast to Kruger, you can drive off-road, so Timbavati may be better for adventurers who want to get a bit closer to wildlife. Remember to follow any safety rules and suggestions during self-drives.

Mala Mala Sable Camp

This particular destination is a private game reserve located within the already private Sabi Sands Game Reserve for luxury travelers ready to splurge. Offering the utmost customization and crowd-free wildlife viewing (safaris don’t put time limits on wildlife viewing, and there are only a few lodges; therefore, there are fewer safari vehicles), this is the type of safari to take when you want to spot only animals and not other humans. The reserve claims to have the “lowest density of humans to the highest density of wildlife” per acre.

Mala Mala shares an unfenced border with Kruger National Park , and visitors can expect to see the Big 5 and beyond. Those who want even more privacy should stay at Mala Mala Sable Camp , a secluded property with suites overlooking a watering hole.

Meerkat

This national park spans 2 countries: South Africa and Botswana. It is entirely unfenced, meaning the animals can roam freely throughout the park. However, humans will need a passport if they plan to enter a gate in 1 country and leave from a gate in another country .

Visitors to Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park can expect to see animals like lions, gemsbok, springbok, wildebeest, and leopards, but not the Big 5, as the rhinos, elephants, and buffalos don’t call this spot home. Still, for those who want to get off the beaten path to enjoy the red sand dunes and endemic wildlife (including rare bird species), Kgalagadi is a valid option, especially if you’re looking for a self-drive safari destination (we suggest hiring a guide, though). While not required, a 4×4 vehicle is likely a good idea , and you will have to pay a small fee to enter the park.

This park is also ideal for budget travelers, who can find lodges that charge less than $100 per night (nearly unheard of in the safari world) at spots like the Twee Rivieren Rest Camp . The closest airport is Upington International Airport (UTN).

Safaris can be expensive, so pay with a credit card that earns you bonus points on travel, such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve , which offers 3x Chase Ultimate Reward points per dollar spent. Then, you can transfer these points to various travel partners or use them to book travel within the Chase Travel portal .

Elephants at Addo

Addo Elephant National Park is a 9-hour drive from the Cape Town Airport (CPT), but for those who want to explore the Cape, it could make for an enjoyable road trip through South Africa’s Garden Route. Or, take a quick flight from Cape Town to Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport (PLZ) , just a 30-minute drive from the protected space .

The park is one of the best places in South Africa for a safari. It is home to not only the Big 5 but also the Big 7 , which includes all the same animals in the Big 5, plus the southern right whale and the great white shark (in the marine section of the protected area). You may also spot large elephant herds (more than 600 elephants inhabit the park), Burchell’s zebra, and red hartebeest.

Addo offers accommodations ranging from budget to luxury . Consider Nyathi Rest Camp , where huts feature private hot tubs and gorgeous bush views. However, visitors can’t drive off-road here because this location is a national park .

Although December is an excellent time to visit Cape Town, the best time to see Addo Elephant National Park is June to September. Just know nights can get very cold (this is winter in the Cape), so pack layers.

South Africa is one of the top countries in the world for a safari, with many parks, reserves, and destinations ideal for enjoying all the flora and fauna that African nature has to offer. South Africa has something to fit your safari needs, from spotting the Big 5 to even the Big 7 , self-driving your own vehicle, or taking that luxury, bucket-list safari in a private reserve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to drive from johannesburg to kruger national park.

It’s safe to drive from Johannesburg to Kruger National Park. Just take the general safety precautions you’d take on any drive. You may also prefer to fly from the OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg to an airport that’s closer to Kruger, such as  Hoedspruit Airport (HDS), Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP), or Skukuza Airport (SZK).

Are there any Kruger National Park safari all-inclusive packages?

Many luxury safari lodges are all-inclusive of meals, transfers, and safari excursions, including bush walks, safari drives, and other activities.

What's the best alternative South African safari destination besides Kruger?

Some South African safari destinations that aren’t Kruger include Madikwe Game Reserve and Addo Elephant National Park. You can spot the Big 5 (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo) in both places, as well as a variety of additional flora and fauna unique to the area.

Is South Africa the best country for a safari?

You can see wildlife in numerous destinations in South Africa, including the Big 5 in many different game reserves. However, Botswana is another destination ideal for a safari, and if you want to spot massive wildlife migrations, Tanzania’s Serengeti or Kenya’s Masai Mara are both excellent wildlife reserves to visit.

The Best Months for an African Safari

One of the most common questions I’m asked about safari planning is, “what are the best months for an African safari?” The truth is there are no bad times to go on safari because every month has excellent weather for at least a couple of safari destinations.

The Ultimate Safari Travel Guide

Most trip planning starts with a destination, and then you decide when you will visit. But with a safari, you need to do the opposite. Decide when you will be traveling, then scroll down to that month to decide where to go on safari.

Here are the best months for an African safari!

page-divider-green

This is one of the rainiest months for many safari destinations, but there are a few pockets of dry wildlife areas. Plus, you can score some great accommodation deals in January!

Uganda & Rwanda . January is the dry season for these neighboring countries, so this is an excellent time for gorilla trekking. Visit Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda or Bwindi in Uganda. But still bring your raincoat because the “dry season” in these countries still has a lot of rain.

Join the Newsletter

Tanzania . The Northern Circuit in Tanzania (Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park) is one of the driest safari destinations in January. Plus, the first herds of wildebeest and zebra will have migrated back south from the Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya.

Rwanda & Uganda . Like January, February is still relatively dry (though it will get wetter the later in February you go). This is when you can see new-born gorillas, so get ready for a cuteness overload!

Botswana . This is still a great month for the Kalahari area. The calving seasons are in full spring, it’s relatively cool in the desert, and big cats will be on the prowl.

the best months for an African safari

Kenya . This is a hot and dry month for the Serengeti, Maasai Mara, and Laikipia. Wildlife will congregate around water holes, herds will be full of newborns, and this is an excellent month for birding.

While I always recommend seeing as much of Africa as you can during your trip (you’ve come all this way!), this isn’t the time to visit the Okavango Region of Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, or Namibia if you’re interested in seeing big game. The rains will make wildlife viewing very difficult.

March is one of the least-desirable times to visit Africa for a safari because of the rains. But if this is the only month you can go, there are a couple of options.

Tanzania . This is the start of the rainy season and the Great Migration, so wildlife should still be easy to find in the Serengeti. You’ll also see lots of (super cute) newborn wildebeests. March is a shoulder month, so safari lodges discount their rates to attract travelers.

South Africa . This is a great month to drive the famous Garden Route. March is also an excellent time to visit Kruger and Sabi Sands. Avoid the areas of South Africa that border Botswana and Zimbabwe because these places will be rained out.

Victoria Falls . Both the Zimbabwe and Zambia sides of Victoria Falls are excellent destinations during April. Victoria Falls will be at its peak water levels, so prepare to get wet! You can do river and land safaris in Zambezi National Park, and make sure you see Victoria Falls from the land, air, and water.

the best months for an African safari

Namibia . This is an excellent month for birding immediately after the rainy season. Namibia is a desert country, and its rainy season is only from February-March, so wildlife will still be easy to find around water holes in Etosha National Park. The rest of the country will be green and lush from the rains, making this the perfect month for a road trip.

Botswana . April is a shoulder month for Botswana, meaning the most expensive safari destination in Africa will be MUCH more affordable this month. The Okavango will start to flood, so you’ll see lots of wildlife on river safaris.

This is a shoulder month for most of Africa’s safari destinations, so you can score great accommodation deals. This is the end of Fall/beginning of Winter, so the weather will get colder.

Zimbabwe & Zambia . These neighboring countries are great destinations in May because the temperatures will still be pleasant, you’ll beat the crowds and high prices, and Victoria Falls is at some of its highest water levels all year.

Namibia . The weather is perfect in Namibia in May – dry, warm during the days, and cool in the evenings. Namibia’s main attractions – Sossusvlei, Spitzkoppe, Okonjima Nature Reserve, Twyfelfontein, and the Skeleton Coast – will have relatively few crowds and low accommodation rates. Because Namibia is a desert country, you’ll still be able to see wildlife in Etosha National Park in May, even though the rains have just recently stopped.

Mozambique . Known for its “bush to beach” trips, Mozambique is the perfect May destination if you want to combine a safari with a beach getaway.

Southern Africa . This is one of the driest and best safari months for most of Southern Africa! You can’t go wrong with anywhere in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, and Mozambique. This is an especially great month for waking safaris !

Tanzania . June is the beginning of the river-crossing season in the Serengeti when migrating wildebeest negotiate the snapping jaws of giant crocodiles on their journey back to the Masai Mara. This portion of The Great Migration is one of the most sought-after wildlife sightings in the world, so you’ll need to book your safari as far in advance as possible and be prepared for peak prices and crowds.

July, August, September

These are the peak months for safaris throughout Eastern and Southern Africa. As far as game viewing goes, you can’t go wrong with Namibia , Botswana , Zimbabwe , Zambia , South Africa, Mozambique, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, or Uganda.

July, August, and September are great months to see the river crossings in the Serengeti and Masai Mara areas. In addition to watching wildebeest avoid crocodiles, big cats are always crouched nearby as The Great Migration moves through their territories.

Every safari destination will have peak prices and crowds during these months, so book in advance and plan accordingly. I recommend opting for smaller accommodation to avoid overcrowding on game drives.

This is the start of the rainy season for most safari destinations, but you can still find some prime wildlife-viewing conditions in a few places.

Zimbabwe and Zambia . These are two of the driest destinations in October, and Victoria Falls will be at one of its lowest water levels. This means the wildlife will be congregating around waterholes and on riverbanks. Opt for accommodation on the Zambezi River or with an on-site watering hole to give you the chance to see wildlife from your room, dining table, or pool chair.

the best months for an African safari

Kenya . This is one of the least-expensive safari destinations in October, even though big game is still very active and visible. So if you want a budget safari option that will still blow you away, Kenya in October is for you!

Tanzania . This is still a peak travel month in Northern Tanzania when the weather is warm but not hot. The Tarangire area will be filled with elephants, and there will still be river crossings in the Serengeti. If you want to escape the crowds and feel like you have the African bush to yourself, head to Ruaha or Katavi.

the best months for an African safari

This is a washout month for most of Southern and Eastern Africa. It will be hot and humid (remember, it’ll be summer down there!) There is a minor migration for serious safari-goers in Liuwa Plain National Park in Zambia, but otherwise, your options are pretty limited this month.

Tanzania . If you stick to the northern part of the country, some migrating herds allow for excellent wildlife viewing despite the weather. Just don’t forget your rain jacket!

Botswana . This is an excellent month for bird watching in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. It will be wet, but this area of the country is all about water safari activities, so you’ll still be able to spot some wildlife. Botswana consistently ranks as the most expensive safari destination in Africa, but if you go in November, you can stay in top-end luxury game lodges for a fraction of their standard rates.

the best months for an African safari

If you want to celebrate the holidays on safari, Eastern Africa offers you some great safari options.

Kenya . Early December will still have some rain, but the weather will dry out the later in the month you come. Big game will be less visible because water is so plentiful, but your safari lodge will still find you some incredible wildlife sightings. Because of the rains, the Maasai Mara, Laikipia, and Lewa areas are stunningly lush during this month.

the best months for an African safari

Tanzania . Stick to the Northern Circuit, specifically the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, to maximize your wildlife viewing.

Rwanda & Uganda . The weather will dry out in these neighboring countries, so this is an excellent month for a gorilla trek.

Frequently asked questions, what is the best month to go to africa.

One of the most common questions I’m asked about safari planning is, “what are the best months for an African safari.” The truth is there are no bad times to go on safari because every month has excellent weather for at least a couple of safari destinations.

January: Uganda, Rwanda, Botswana, Tanzania

February: Uganda, Rwanda, Botswana, Kenya

March: Tanzania, South Africa (minus the regions that border Botswana and Zimbabwe).

April: Victoria Falls (both the Zambia and Zimbabwe sides), Namibia, Botswana.

May: Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, Mozambique.

June: Tanzania and Southern Africa. This is one of the driest and best safari months for most of Southern Africa! You can’t go wrong with anywhere in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, and Mozambique.

October: Zimbabwe, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania.

November: Northern Tanzania, Botswana.

December: Kenya, Northern Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda.

How expensive is an African safari?

Safaris are not cheap, and you get what you pay for, so don’t skimp on your lodge. As a general rule of thumb, you should plan on spending a minimum of $1,000 per night per person at an all-inclusive resort.

You can find cheaper options, but this is a red flag for your experience, the service you’ll receive, and how the lodge treats wildlife and locals.

I recommend opting for all-inclusive options unless you’re road tripping. If you’re staying at a different accommodation every couple of nights and/or hiring a driver or guide, the all-inclusive rate might not be the best choice.

Be wary of overcrowding when considering an all-inclusive accommodation that’s less than $1000 a night. Before you book, establish how many guests a property can accommodate. It’s a good sign when the lodge website states how many people will be on game drives. The last thing you want on a safari is to be packed shoulder-to-shoulder with people on game drives, at the pool, at dinner, and in the common spaces.

If you need to reduce your safari costs, take a shorter trip. A three-day safari at a lodge of your dreams will be a better trip than a week-long safari at an accommodation you have to settle for.

What is the best time to go on safari in South Africa?

Kenya and Tanzania are both incredible safari destinations, and they will give you very different scenery and experiences. best safari months in south africa

The continent of Africa is renowned for its richness and resilience. Though it is a land commonly lumped together as one, Africa houses many different countries with their own unique cultures, landscapes, history and more. Thrill-seekers or those looking for a new way to vacation can head to the continent for an African safari trip unlike those on any other continent. However, certain countries in Africa make for the best opportunities for a safari trip. Which countries you should choose is based on what you are hoping to see and what the safari experience is like .

Here are 10 of the best African safari countries to help you decide where to embark on your wildlife adventure .

10 of the Best African Safari Countries

Many people looking to go on an African safari trip are probably hoping to see what is known as the “big five” animals . The “big five” refers to a group of five iconic and sought-after large mammal species in Africa: the elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhinoceros. Some of these countries are home to all five of these animals, making them very popular destinations. You are more likely to see other animals such as zebras, wildebeests, gorillas and more in other nations. Make sure you know which animals you mostly want to see before picking a country to visit. If the kinds of animals do not particularly matter to you, consider picking a beginner-friendly safari country to visit.

Zebra in Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

Kenya stands out as one of the best African safari countries due to its spectacular landscapes and remarkable biodiversity. The Maasai Mara National Reserve, synonymous with the Great Migration of wildebeests and zebras, showcases a breathtaking display of wildebeest and other wildlife crossing the vast plains. Beyond the iconic Mara, Kenya offers diverse ecosystems such as Amboseli National Park.

This is where visitors can witness wildlife against the stunning backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. The country’s commitment to conservation is evident in its thriving national parks and reserves. Those include Tsavo and Samburu, each offering unique wildlife encounters. With a well-developed infrastructure, experienced guides and a range of accommodation options (from luxury lodges to tented camps), Kenya ensures a memorable and accessible safari experience. These reasons make it a top choice for those seeking the quintessential African wildlife adventure, especially those going on their first safari.

Zebras in Serengeti National Park

Tanzania is celebrated as one of the premier African safari destinations, distinguished by its breathtaking landscapes and unparalleled wildlife experiences. The Serengeti National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renowned for hosting the spectacular Great Migration. It is a majestic procession of wildebeest and other animals. This vast ecosystem houses diverse wildlife year-round. The Ngorongoro Crater, another UNESCO site, offers a unique and concentrated wildlife experience within the confines of a volcanic caldera.

Tanzania’s commitment to conservation is evident in its initiatives. Additionally, the country’s parks, including Selous Game Reserve and Tarangire National Park, showcase a rich array of ecosystems.  Tanzania provides an all-encompassing safari adventure with Kilimanjaro’s iconic silhouette, pristine beaches in Zanzibar and a variety of accommodations. Travelers can choose between luxury lodges to tented camps. It’s an exceptional choice for those seeking an immersive and unforgettable wildlife safari.

South Africa

Rhinos at Kruger National Park

South Africa stands out as one of the best African safari countries due to its diverse and accessible wildlife experiences. Kruger National Park, one of Africa’s most renowned reserves, is home to an abundance of the Big Five and offers a well-established infrastructure. This makes it an excellent choice for both first-time and seasoned safari-goers.

Beyond Kruger, the country’s conservation efforts are evident in private game reserves like Sabi Sands, where intimate encounters with wildlife are common. South Africa’s appeal extends beyond its wildlife, incorporating picturesque landscapes, from the iconic Table Mountain to the scenic Garden Route. South Africa caters to a broad range of tastes with a mix of safari lodges, luxury accommodations and cultural experiences. Visit this country for a well-rounded safari adventure that combines wildlife encounters with the country’s rich cultural and natural diversity.

Botswana is widely regarded as one of the best African safari countries, if not the best. It is celebrated for its pristine wilderness and unique safari offerings. The Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a standout feature. The delta creates a mesmerizing mosaic of water channels and islands that attract an array of wildlife. The country’s commitment to low-impact, high-value tourism is reflected in its exclusive safari experiences, which include renowned private concessions like Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park.

These provide intimate encounters with Africa’s iconic species, including elephants and big cats. Botswana’s emphasis on conservation has led to a remarkable balance between tourism and the preservation of natural habitats. The country’s remote and unspoiled landscapes, coupled with luxurious safari camps, contribute to a truly immersive and exclusive safari adventure.

Elephants in Etosha National Park, Namibia

Namibia offers a unique and otherworldly landscape that sets it apart from traditional safari destinations. The Etosha National Park provides an extraordinary safari experience with its expansive salt pan, dramatic scenery and diverse wildlife. Namibia’s desert-adapted wildlife, including elephants and rhinos in Damaraland, showcase the country’s ability to sustain life in seemingly harsh environments. The stunning landscapes of Sossusvlei’s towering red sand dunes and the eerie beauty of the Deadvlei add to Namibia’s appeal.

Namibia also ensures that visitors can engage with its natural wonders while contributing to the preservation of its unique ecosystems. It does this with a focus on sustainable tourism and community conservation. The country’s commitment to responsible tourism, coupled with its extraordinary landscapes, makes Namibia a captivating choice for those seeking a safari adventure that transcends the traditional African safari experience.

yawning lion in Mana Pools National Park

Zimbabwe is celebrated as one of the best African safari countries for its pristine wilderness and unique safari experiences as it revives its tourism industry. Hwange National Park, one of the largest in Africa, boasts a diverse array of wildlife, including large elephant herds. The Mana Pools National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a distinct safari experience with the opportunity for walking safaris along the Zambezi River, providing intimate encounters with wildlife in a breathtaking setting.

Zimbabwe’s commitment to conservation is evident in its efforts to protect its wildlife and natural habitats. The country’s lesser-explored parks, such as Gonarezhou National Park, contribute to a sense of exclusivity and adventure. Zimbabwe offers a unique and enriching safari experience that caters to those seeking both wildlife encounters and off-the-beaten-path exploration.

Zambia captivates visitors with its pristine wilderness and immersive safari experiences. South Luangwa National Park is a jewel for its walking safaris that allow enthusiasts to intimately connect with the surrounding nature and diverse wildlife. The Lower Zambezi National Park, nestled along the Zambezi River, offers a unique blend of water-based and land safaris, providing opportunities to witness wildlife against the stunning backdrop of the river. Zambia’s commitment to sustainable tourism is reflected in its well-managed parks and conservation efforts.

The country’s relatively low tourist density ensures an authentic and exclusive safari adventure. Encounters with big game and diverse birdlife are plentiful. With its unspoiled landscapes, the mighty Victoria Falls, and a commitment to ecotourism, Zambia provides a holistic and unforgettable safari experience for those seeking the untamed beauty of Africa.

hippopotamus enjoys the cool water of the Kazinga Channel

Uganda is recognized as one of the best African safari countries. It is celebrated for its unique blend of traditional safari experiences and opportunity to encounter its many primates. While mostly renowned for its gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda also offers diverse savannah landscapes in parks like Queen Elizabeth National Park.

This creates an extraordinary fusion of big game encounters and intimate interactions with endangered mountain gorillas. The country’s commitment to conservation and responsible tourism is evident, ensuring sustainable wildlife viewing and community engagement. Uganda’s diverse ecosystems, from lush rainforests to the vast savannah, contribute to an awesome safari experience. It can make for a compelling destination for those seeking a well-rounded adventure in the heart of East Africa.

Buffalo in Akagera National Park

Rwanda has earned its place among the best African safari countries due to its unique and transformative wildlife experiences. It is similar to Uganda in the sense that the country is most famous for gorilla trekking. In Volcanoes National Park visitors can encounter mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. However, Rwanda offers more than primate encounters.

The country’s commitment to conservation is reflected in Akagera National Park, which showcases a remarkable resurgence of wildlife, including the Big Five. Beyond the wildlife, Rwanda’s lush landscapes, scenic lakes and vibrant culture contribute to a diverse and enriching safari experience. Rwanda stands out for its sustainable tourism, beautiful community and the opportunity to witness the resurgence of a once-fragile ecosystem for those seeking a meaningful and well-rounded safari adventure.

lemur in Madagascar

Madagascar, although not located on the African mainland, is a unique and compelling destination for nature enthusiasts. The country offers a safari experience like no other. It is renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity and high rate of endemic species. The island is home to a vast array of unique plants and animals, including lemurs, chameleons and diverse bird species.

The Avenue of the Baobabs and the otherworldly Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park showcase the island’s distinctive landscapes. This destination’s commitment to conservation and ecotourism ensures that visitors can explore its natural wonders responsibly. The combination of endemic wildlife, diverse ecosystems and uniqueness of the island makes Madagascar a captivating choice for those seeking a safari experience off the beaten path.
