Catchpenny Safari Lodges: Luxury Glamping in Fife

Sea views from the porch at Catchpenny

Safari Glamping in Fife at Catchpenny.

Who wants to go glamping in Fife? I know just the place. Catchpenny Safari Lodges have brought safari-style canvas tents to Scotland’s seaside – and given them a wee sprinkling of luxury. Here’s my review of the experience.

Me sitting in the cabin bed at Catchpenny Safari Lodges

What’s cool about Catchpenny?

Eco-friendly safari glamping tents in Fife. Who would’ve thought? Since opening its zip-up canvas doors in 2018, Catchpenny has been welcoming visitors from all over – and the tents are now being booked up months in advance.

Catchpenny is named after a tavern which once stood nearby . This important ‘cultural’ place of gathering helped solve a very serious local issue: alcohol consumption was not permitted in the villages on Sundays, so they built a watering hole on the land in-between. Genius .

There are eight luxury safari tents lined along the seafront, which are each named after some of the local wildlife you might spot! They all sleeps six people; there’s a double bedroom and a twin bedroom at the back of the tent, and a cabin bed with cute wee shutters which open out into the living area. They all all come with cosy, quality linen and towels.

The kitchen has a double hob for cooking and boiling the kettle, and the wood-burning stove comes with a built-in oven compartment. All cutlery, kitchenware and utensils are provided, so you have everything you need to self-cater. You’ll also find complimentary tea, coffee and sugar, as well as salt, pepper and olive oil; this is a really nice touch, as these are the things I always forget!

The porch area has tables, cushioned garden sofas and armchairs, and a fire pit (marshmallows, anyone?). At the back of each tent, there is an enclosed bathroom area with a proper sink and toilet, hot shower and heated towel rail – there are even lovely bath products provided. If you’re used to camping or basic glamping, this is a real treat.

The site is completely off-grid, and the energy is powered by the sun and wind.  There is a gas boiler to keep the water roasty toasty, and there are USB charging points to charge your devices; there is no WiFi in the tents, and mobile reception/4G comes and goes – so relish the opportunity for a digital detox!

The novelty and practicality in this style of glamping – especially as compared to ‘regular’ camping – is hugely appealing. Kids love the experience, and furry friends are welcome too; a maximum of two dogs per tent . I’ve been glamping all over Scotland, and safari tents were a first for me. I loved the concept, and think the tents are a great base for exploring the East Neuk or walking the Fife Coastal Path when the weather is mild.

This unique addition to Fife’s tourism offering is something to get excited about. owner Alex Nairn of Elie Estates is hatching plans for more quirky developments in the area – so watch this space!

The couch at Catchpenny

The tent looks like a lodge – and has all the comforts of a lodge – but it does very much feel like a tent; which is to be expected, given that it is a tent . If the weather is chilly and windy, you will feel it inside the tent so I would highly recommend taking a dressing gown, some cosy layers and slippers. We visited on an unusually cold weekend for the time of year, with high winds, and therefore couldn’t spend a lot of time sitting around in the tent – or making use of the fire pit on the porch.

Each tent comes with one bag of firewood, which will last roughly full evening in the tent. Depending on the weather forecast, I would suggest pre-ordering an additional bag of firewood for each day that you’re there, or taking some of your own. If you forget, you can buy more from Ardross Farm Shop for £9 per bag, plus £4 for kindling.

There are radiators in the back two bedrooms which are on a timer in the morning and evening. There are also hot water bottles on each bed, and extra blankets to make sure you’re cosy when you sleep. A nice cup of tea after a hot shower should also do the trick! If the weather is nice, you might not even need any of the above.

Location, Location, Location.

Catchpenny is located just outside the pretty seaside town of Elie , which is known for its bonnie beaches and historic harbour. Beyond Elie, you’ll find a string of super-cute fishing villages: St Monans, Pittenweem, Anstruther and Crail. Taking pretty photos couldn’t be any easier in this wee ‘Neuk’ (Scots for corner) of Scotland; the colourful facades, picturesque harbours, and narrow streets never fail to look good on camera.

Allow yourself at least a whole afternoon to village-hop, or set aside even more time and walk sections of the Fife Coastal Path – rewarding yourself with a treat in each village!

For fish & chips go to the renowned Anstruther Fish Bar or the Pittenweem Fish & Chip Bar , which came highly recommended by locals, but it wasn’t open at the times I was there. I loved the Pittenweem Chocolate Company – mainly the orange hot chocolate, but also the kitsch, vintage interior. The Lobster Hut in Crail is high on my list, but is never open when I’m there; always phone ahead before making the journey.

Fish & Chips in Anstruther

The glamping tents sit right on the super-scenic seafront : any closer to the water, and they’d need to double-up as boats! Bass Rock and the Isle of May sit beautifully on the horizon of the Forth, the water glistening under beams of sunshine. Even when the tide is out, the serene sound of the sea can still be heard.

Guests have been known to spot dolphins as they swim past the glamping site . I wasn’t so lucky, but I’m told it’s a regular occurrence. How amazing would that be?!

Where to eat near Catchpenny.

Fife is heaven for foodies , so you’re spoiled for choice in terms of options for both self-catering and eating out. In Elie alone, you can eat out at The Ship Inn – which has a great reputation and should be booked in advance – or pick up supplies from Elie Deli ; we bought Isle of Mull cheddar and dips to make nachos. Here are my three other top suggestions:

Ardross Farm Shop (just before the entrance to Catchpenny) – this award-winning, family-run farm shop is exactly the type of place I wish I could afford to do my weekly shopping! Here you’ll find fresh produce and quality products, including the farm’s own traditionally reared beef, and fresher than fresh fruit and vegetables.

You’ll also find an array of artisan delights from the local area and beyond; ingredients for cooking, ready meals, cheese and crackers, posh condiments, snacks, and sweet treats. We LOVED the Mattarello wild mushroom & mozzarella ravioloni with Trotters rocket & pumpkin seed pesto. Aye, it did cost more than chain supermarket brands, but it was still cheaper than eating out – and the food was fantastic.

Goodies from Ardross Farm Shop, Fife

Bowhouse (2-minute drive from Catchpenny) – time your stay to visit the monthly farmers market. Bowhouse was set up to allow locals and visitors to purchase fresh, local produce straight from some of Fife’s best suppliers. Pick up supplies to self-cater at Catchpenny, or head straight for the street food stands. I loved the Vietnamese Bun Cha from Umi’s Kitchen and the Chicken Katsu Bao Bun from Ròst; not Scottish in the slightest, but so tasty. There are also arts and crafts, sweet treats and live music – all within a big, sheltered barn. The catering options change every month, and you can check out the full list of traders here.

Food from Umi's Kitchen at Bowhouse Market, Fife

East Neuk Cooks (delivered to you) – delicious home-cooked meals delivered right to your door; all you have to do is heat it up. All meals are prepared by the lovely Stacey, whose career in the catering industry has taken her to London, Brussels and Los Angeles. Nowadays, she caters for private events, small weddings, and travel bloggers on weekends away who can’t be bothered cooking! Stacey uses seasonal, local produce to create her hearty, homely meals: we ordered the Luxury Shepherd’s Pie and heated it up in the wee oven in the wood burner. It was delicious.

  • Check-in days at Catchpenny are on Mondays and Fridays –  depending on which day you arrive, you can stay for 3, 4, 7 or 14 nights.
  • For the best value stay on a Monday for 4 nights – the total cost for this duration is £375

Scotland is part of the United Kingdom but is situated north of England. With the North Sea to its east and Ireland and the Atlantic Ocean to its west, Scotland is perfectly nestled in between varied landscapes. No matter where you go in Scotland there is always beautiful scenery or outdoor activities to participate in. Glamping in Wales, Ireland , and England is so popular, it is no wonder Glamping Scotland is as well.

Whether you want to stay at a castle, on a farm, or deep in the woods, Glamping in Scotland has it all with unique adventures and a friendly culture around every corner. Let’s go over some of the various regions for Glamping Scotland, then we will show you some of our favorite Scotland Glamping properties to book on your next getaway.

Regions to Explore while Glamping in Scotland

There are several distinct regions of Scotland , each unique in its own right. The highlands and lowlands have been historically divided for centuries.

Historically the lowlands have focused more on agriculture, coal mining, and other industry.  Geographically this area features a lot of valleys, rivers, and farmland. The rivers Forth and Clyde dominate this region.

The highlands are traditionally known as the land north of the Highland Boundary Fault. This region is dominated by beautiful mountains. Whiskey is made in large quantities here and the area has many distilleries.

The Scottish Islands are mostly located on the northeast side of the country and are associated with some of their own cultures. Scotland has over 900 islands included in the country, most are included in one of the three groups: Shetland, Orkney, and the Hebrides.

Scotland is covered with lochs and National Parks and visitors’ opportunities for outdoor activities are endless, regardless of where in the country you are. Castles are built at historically strategic locations and remain open for viewing. Many lochs have become famous in their own right, like Loch Ness and Loch Lomond, and deserve a visit.

Glamping: 10 Best Spots To Camp In Luxury In Scotland

For the chance to revel in the peace and quiet and for that feeling of calm that returning to nature brings, glamping offers the perfect combination of all the benefits of camping without giving up any of life’s little luxuries. Your surroundings are all important when glamping and are better than the stunning Scottish countryside, where a mountain wilderness of lochs, peaks, and castles is ready to welcome you. Read on for our top 10 spots to camp luxuriously in Scotland…

1. Carr’s Hill Glamping

Carr’s Hill is situated in a peaceful, beautiful, rural area in the heart of Scotland, next to an ancient Roman fort and is less than 6 miles from Stirling and Falkirk. Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Perth are all within easy driving distance. The two Luxury Safari Tents are situated in a large field that overlooks the surrounding farmland, with plenty of space for children to play safely. The Safari Tents offer real home-from-home luxury facilities, including two bedrooms, a private shower room, log burning stove, and an indoor kitchen area with a dining table and chairs. Outside you’ll find your own BBQ and a private decked veranda from which you can enjoy the magnificent sunsets towards Ben Lomond and Ben Ledi. There’s even a chimenea, perfect for snuggling around if the nights get chilly. Part of the beauty of staying here is that the tents are ‘off-grid.’ This means that they have no mains power supply; your lighting is a wonderfully magical combination of storm lanterns, solar lights, candles, and torches. There’s also a therapy room for sports, relaxation, and aromatherapy massages to further aid your relaxation.

2. Loch Ken Eco Bothies

The Loch Ken Eco Bothies lie just south of the Galloway Activity Centre on the beautiful shores of Loch Ken in South West Scotland. Your idyllic location hosts an abundance of wildlife, including Red Deer, Squirrels, and Red Kites, which are all regular sights and occasionally an otter in the early hours. The area is part of the UK’s first Dark Sky Park, so stargazers will be stunned by what they can see during a clear night’s sky. There are three unique Bothies on the site; the Red Squirrel caters for 2-4 people, the Red Kite for 4-6, and the ultra-romantic Otter Eco Yurt is perfect for just the two of you. Fittings include a wood-burning stove and actual beds with luxury mattresses and crisp Egyptian cotton sheets. You have a fully equipped kitchen, shower, and toilet facilities, as well as a private decking with a wood-fired hot tub from which you can witness magnificent sunsets.

3. Loch Tay Highland Lodges

As well as the Scandinavian built holiday lodges and woodland cabins, Loch Tay Highland Lodges features a range of glamping options; from Wigwams and Geodesic domes to ‘bunkhouse’ style accommodation. For a more luxurious stay, opt for the Premium Wigwams with Hot Tubs, which includes a small bathroom and kitchenette, so you don’t need to make use of the amenities block and the campers kitchen. The site is located in Perthshire in the central highlands of Scotland, on the shores of Loch Tay. You are surrounded by mountains, lochs, and rivers and within an easy driving distance of Edinburgh, Stirling, and Glasgow. As well as soaking up the scenery, there is a huge array of watersports and activities available onsite, plus a bistro and a marina where you can hire a boat.

4. Marthrown of Mabie

Stay in authentic replica of a Celtic Iron Age roundhouse at Marthrown of Mabie which is set in Mabie Forest, Dumfries and Galloway. The thatch-roofed roundhouse is complete with a large wood burner and sleeping area for up to 16 people. The site also features composting toilets and hot showers to ensure the glam remains in glamping. There’s even a wood-fired sauna and a hot tub, so it’s not quite Iron Age facilities! You can also stay in a Bunkhouse which houses 26 beds, a Tipi or Mongolian Yurts, so you’re spoilt for choice with accommodation.

5. Trossachs Yurts, West Mosside Farm, near Stirling

The Trossachs Yurts are tucked on West Moss-side Organic Farm half a mile west of the village of Thornhill in Stirling. The secluded spot enjoys stunning views of the mountains of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. The yurts were constructed using traditional methods and kitted out with all the luxuries you need; the walls are lined with felt, and there are lots of rugs, carpets, cushions, and throws. Bask in the warmth from the wood-burning stove and barbeque some local, organic Shetland beef steaks. Each yurt sleeps four adults or five with an extra child.

6. Harvest Moon Holidays

For a wonderful luxury safari tent that could be straight out of Africa on a family-oriented site, check out Harvest Moon Holidays . The site is located on the coastal dunes in East Lothian. The luxurious 7 safari tents are complete with a wood-burning stove, an actual toilet, a shower, a double bed, a bunk bed, a double sofa bed, and a cupboard bed for the kiddies! As well to the safari tents, you can also stay in a treehouse! There are seven octagonal treehouses with two double bedrooms and an ensuite; they even have swings and a love seat so are perfect for little ones. All the treehouses and safari tents have wood-burning stoves and the site also offers a farm shop, BBQ, and campfire facilities, as well as a Kid’s Corner with chickens, ducks, bunnies, lambs, and ponies.

7. Bell Tents, Cambo Country Estate

There are two beautiful Bell Tents on the Cambo Country Estate near St Andrews in Fife. The tents are set in a picturesque clearing in the woodland on the sea walk. Each is perfect for two (yes, in proper beds!) and is romantically lit with fairy lights. Your tent includes armchairs, a coffee table, a rug, and a blanket box, so it has a real cozy, home-from-home feel. The tents share a fire pit and seating area perfect for relaxing under the stars. There’s also a gorgeously rustic outdoor kitchen under a huge parachute!

What do We Offer

Caravan Pitches

At Carr’s Hill we have a Caravan and Motorhome Club CL site with five thoughtfully laid out touring pitches. They are all hardstanding with their own water tap. In addition, we have 5 of our own private pitches which are located adjacent to the CL. Please click on the Touring Pitches tab above for further information and details of our facilities. Or you can take a tour here:

Click here to view a short video of our Touring Pitches

Safari Tents

We have two Luxury Safari Tents at Carr’s Hill to complement our existing accommodation. These are separate from the touring pitches. They offer a unique retreat in the Stirlingshire countryside. And at the same time they retain many of the comforts of home. For further information on our tents at Central Scotland Glamping please click  here .

Why Choose Us

Attractions

We are ideally situated in a peaceful rural area. Our pitches have an open outlook over the surrounding farmland. Although were rural, our accessibility is one of our greatest strengths. We’re close to the M9/M80/M876 motorways links and within easy reach of Stirling, Loch Lomond & The Trossachs. Carr’s Hill sits adjacent to, and is named after, a scheduled ancient roman fort. Our situation in the countryside outside Stirling, in the heart of Scotland, makes us an ideal touring base. We have beautiful views and are surrounded by fields of horses and sheep which means you can enjoy a holiday in the countryside.

And you can walk to  Plean Country Park  which is a mile away. There you’ll be able to enjoy excellent dog walking paths, woodland trails and a variety of seasonal events. Wellsfield Farm Park is 5 minutes by car or can be reached by walking across country within 20-25 minutes.

Stirling is less than 6 miles away –  Stirling Castle  and  The Wallace Monument  are popular with our visitors and are within 15 minutes drive. Falkirk is around the same distance in the opposite direction. The world renowned Falkirk Wheel  is closeby and you can also enjoy a trip to  Helix Park   which offers a fantastic opportunity for visitors to stand next to the 30 metre tall horse head structures known as The Kelpies . Again, these are within a 15 minute drive. Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth don’t take long to get to either and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs are within an hour’s drive.

Locally, you can head to the villages of Dunipace or Plean which are closeby for essential shopping. For a wider choice there is a major supermarket within 3 miles. Stirling has convenient City Centre parking with easy access to a full range of national stores as well as many interesting individual shops. And for those who prefer someone else to drive, there is also a highly accessible Park & Ride facility. You can head to Larbert Train Station which is only 6 miles away – it has excellent free parking and regular trains run to Edinburgh and Glasgow. Edinburgh Tram Link (Ingliston) is popular and within 30 minutes drive – it offers free parking and swift travel into the city.

Local Activities

There’s lots to do within easy reach of Carr’s Hill including: golf course 3 miles; coarse fishing 2 miles; clay pigeon shooting 2 miles; and horse riding 2 miles.

For additional guests, please see our Luxury Safari Tents tab above or Bed and Breakfast accommodation is available at a neighbouring farm, only half a mile away.

What to expect at caravan parks in Scotland

While each campground is a bit different, here are some general things you can expect:

Parking spot

Scotland camping parking spot

We found campgrounds in Scotland didn’t have private spaces like you might be used to if you’re from the USA or Canada.

Instead, the caravan parks are more open with designated spaces for you to park a rig or pitch a tent.

The type of parking spaces varies — some caravan parks had gravel spots where you were allowed to park a van or RV while other campgrounds were more or less big open fields where you could find an open space to park.

Many of the campgrounds we stayed at were in places with a view, which is an added bonus!

Electric hookups

Scotland camping electric hookup

Most campgrounds in Scotland also have the option to choose an electric or non-electric site.

Some caravan parks required RVs to park in the spots where there were electric hookups, so regardless of if you really needed to hook up to electric or not, you were still paying for it.

Scotland camping bathrooms

All campgrounds in Scotland will have toilets, but the quality of the bathrooms varied a bit. All of the campgrounds we stayed at had flush toilets — some were very modern and clean, while others felt like a true rustic camping experience.

Scotland camping showers

Every campground we stayed at had showers. And yes, hot water seemed to be standard. There were no limits on shower times or pay showers (like we encountered while camping in Iceland ), but like the toilets, the quality of the showers varied a bit.

We had amazingly clean and new shower facilities at the first campground we stayed at in Inverness ( Ardtower Caravan Park ). We got a bit spoiled, because they were by far the best showers of our entire trip!

Insider Tip: You’ll definitely want to pack shower shoes so you don’t have to go barefoot!

Dish cleaning area

Scotland camping dish cleaning area

Most campgrounds will have dish cleaning areas, which is nice because it means you don’t have to do dishes in your campervan or RV if you don’t want to. This is particularly helpful if you’re trying to conserve water or not make a mess.

In our experience though, it was less work to just do them right away in our motorhome so we didn’t have to walk over to the cleaning area with our dirty dishes.

Scotland camping laundry facilities

Some campgrounds have washers and dryers, which are typically coin-operated. If you’re on a long road trip and want to freshen up your wardrobe, this can be very convenient.

Water fill-up

Scotland camping water fill stations

Campgrounds should have a place to fill up your tank with fresh, potable water. This should be free of charge if you have paid to stay in the campsite.

Dump stations

Scotland camping greywater dump station

There should be a gray water dump station as well as a place to dump your chemical waste (aka your toilet).

Scotland camping glamping facilities

In addition to places to pitch a tent or park an RV, some campgrounds have glamping facilities. So if you’re looking to switch it up for a night along your road trip, you could opt to stay in a pod or little cabin.

There were a few campgrounds that advertised having WiFi, but it was very mediocre and we wouldn’t recommend relying on campgrounds for your Internet needs.

So how does one get cell service or Internet on a Scotland road trip? Good question! We recommend getting an eSIM. We got ours by using the Airalo app and were really happy with the service we had on our entire trip. Plus, it’s super easy and cheap — you basically download the app and pay for the data you need.

More amenities

Some campgrounds go above and beyond just the basic facilities. You might see things like a common seating area, a cooking/kitchen space, playground facilities or even onsite cafes. One campground we stayed at even had a little herb garden you could pick from when cooking! But these are above and beyond what you should expect.

wild camping in Scotland

Wild camping refers to staying overnight in a place that is not a designated campsite.

While wild camping is legal and widely popular, there are some important things you need to know before parking or pitching a tent for the night.

Wild camping is a bit of a complex subject, so we’re going to break it down so you have everything you need to know about wild camping in Scotland (legally!).

It is possible to park overnight in places that aren’t designated campgrounds, but — and this is a big but! — you can’t just camp anywhere .

You can’t just camp anywhere! Many parking lots have signs that say “no overnight parking” or “no camping”, and it is important that you obey these.

Also, there are pull-outs that are just not safe for parking overnight as they are too close to the road and difficult for oncoming traffic to see a vehicle at night.

So how do you know where you can legally and safely park overnight?

Using apps like Park4Night and iOverlander, you can read descriptions and reviews of wild camping areas to find ones that will work for you.

What can you expect when wild camping?

Expect that there will be zero facilities. You will likely just have a place to park for the night. Hopefully it will be level, as it’s no fun sleeping on a slant!

Important: There will not be a toilet, a garbage or any place to fill or dump your water. This means you must prepare accordingly. Don’t plan on wild camping if you don’t have enough water in your tanks or if you desperately need to dump.

Leave No Trace

This should be common sense, but it is very important that you do not leave any waste behind when you are wild camping. When you leave, there should be zero trace that you were ever there.

  • No toilet paper or human waste
  • No gray water dumped
Psst! Read up on the 7 principles of Leave No Trace before your trip!

Our recommendation: Don’t plan on wild camping every night. Plan on staying in established campgrounds at least every few nights so you have the facilities to dump and fill your water tanks and dispose of your garbage properly.

Scotland camping

If you’re planning a camping trip in Scotland and still have questions, we’ve got answers for you…

How much do campgrounds cost?

Each campground is slightly different, but in our experience, they were between 23 – 34  pounds per night (about $25-$40).

Average: It seemed like 28 pounds ($33) was a common price for campsites, so that would be a good average cost to help you estimate.

Do I need reservations at campgrounds in Scotland?

Scotland camping

Most of the time, yes.

We didn’t exactly realize this before our trip, and it was kind of an issue at first. In fact, we were turned down 3 times because campgrounds were full.

There is good news though…

You can often reserve just a day or two in advance (either by calling or booking online).

Once we realized reservations were more necessary than we originally thought, we called a day or two ahead of time for the remainder of our trip we were okay.

If there is a specific site you really want to stay at, especially in popular areas, like the Isle of Skye, we’d recommend booking those further ahead of time as they do actually fill up a ways out.

How do you find campgrounds in Scotland?

We have just what you need to find campgrounds in Scotland! We’ve got a list of handy apps as well as a map of some of the best campsites in Scotland .

Campervan vs. Tent: Which is better?

Scotland camping

This is very subjective, and each will be better for a different type of traveler.

While we love tent camping, we’d personally much prefer staying in a campervan in Scotland.

Depending on what time of year you’re visiting Scotland , you may encounter a lot of rain. Personally, I don’t love setting up or tearing down a tent in the rain.

Also, think about the set-up and tear-down time. If you’re on an extended road trip, you will have to do this each day. A campervan, on the other hand, is all ready to go once you park for the night.

That said, if you’re on a super tight budget or are a local looking for a quick and cheap getaway, tent camping might be a much better choice for you.

Scotland camping

What you pack will vary a bit depending on whether you’re camping in a tent or an RV, but here are a few items we were very happy we packed:

Psst! If you’re planning on renting a van, we’ve got a list of campervan essentials just for you!

Random items

  • Packing cubes : an essential for keeping your van organized
  • Dry bag : essential for keeping valuables dry in Scotland’s wet climate
  • Reusable baggies : come in super handy for snacks and storing small items
  • Raingear: Precipitation is pretty much a guarantee on a trip to Scotland, so don’t forget your rain gear. We each had rain jackets as well as these travel umbrellas , and we’re glad we had both for different purposes.
  • Rubber bands & chip clips : Trust us, you’ll need a way to keep those food bags closed so they don’t spill all over your car/campervan.
  • Garbage bags: Pack a couple of small garbage bags from home to keep your trash in one place.
  • Spices : we like bringing our own salt (sea salt or Himalayan), pepper grinder & cayenne, plus, any others we feel like packing
  • Snacks: dried fruit, nuts, protein bars
  • AeroPress Go : If you’re a coffee drinker, this very portable coffee maker is clutch when camping! It makes an excellent brew and we’re sure you’ll get lots of use out of it long after this trip.
  • Dehydrated meals (optional): These are a super quick meal idea and work great for a quick hot lunch or dinner.
  • Dr. Bronner’s biodegradable soap : to wash dishes
  • Quick-dry towel
  • Body wipes: For a way to freshen up on days you don’t feel like showering
  • Dry shampoo
  • Hand sanitizer ( this one is our favorite! )
  • Mini First Aid Kit
  • Shower shoes: Trust us, you’ll need these for showering in campgrounds. You’ll thank us later!

Electronics

  • FYI Scotland uses Type G plugs, the standard voltage is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz.
  • Portable battery pack : keep your phone and other devices charged
  • Inflatable solar lamp
  • During a trip in Iceland, our campervan battery died in the middle of nowhere during a torrential rainstorm. It took us hitchhiking to a nearby farm to find jumper cables. As soon as we got home, we bought this device and now we will always travel with it when we’re renting a car or campervan. We brought it to Scotland but thankfully didn’t need to use it!

Be sure to download our  complete packing list for Scotland !  It’s packed with good suggestions and  insider tips  to help plan your Scotland trip. And it’s completely  FREE , so why not!?

Scotland Camping Apps

Scotland camping

Okay, so how does one find campsites in Scotland?

There are a few ways and we’re going to go over them and share our favorite tips.

Google Maps

iOS | Android

We love using Google Maps to plan out our road trips . We typically pin all the places we want to stop along the way, including campground options.

To find campgrounds in Google Maps, simply zoom into the map location you’re searching in, and type “campground” into the search bar. All the nearby campground options will pop up along with reviews, photos and a website.

This is a European camping app that was recommended to us by the staff at Bunk Campers. It is really helpful for finding wild camping spots in addition to established campgrounds.

It is free to download and is pretty user-friendly.

iOverlander

This is one of our favorite camping apps in the USA and we were happy to find it also works in Scotland!

You can easily look at a specific location on the map and see all types of campsites nearby. Once you click on them, you can find reviews and information about what type of campsite it is (established campground vs. wild camping). You can also see the amenities and price.

In addition to campgrounds, iOverlander shows other facilities you may need on your campervan trip, like where you can fill water and dump your tanks.

Our advice: Familiarize yourself with the apps above prior to your trip and figure out which you prefer using. Flag the campsites you’re interested in so you can find them easily.

Scotland Campsite Map

Scotland Campsites Map

The map above shows all of the best campsites in Scotland so you can easily figure out where each is located and map the distance to major attractions.

We’ve compiled a list of some of the most highly-rated Scotland campsites broken down by region so you can flag the ones you’d like to spend the night at during your Scotland camping trip.

Camping near Glasgow

  • Eden Leisure Village : 20 minutes outside Glasgow, this picturesque Scotland campsite offers campervan and RV sites alongside unique glamping sites that include pods, a hobbit house, and a “glampervan.” Luxurious extras include a hot tub and spa treatments, for an additional fee.
  • Drymen Camping : This site is ideal for those looking for something closer to wild camping in Scotland, as it’s more rustic and caters to tent and campervan campers only. There are also a few glamping pods available.
  • Culzean Castle Camping and Caravanning Club Site : Explore Culzean Castle, remote beaches, and fairytale forests from this immaculately-maintained campground located an hour southwest of Glasgow.

Camping in the Highlands

  • Ardtower Caravan Park : A top-notch Scotland camping experience in Inverness (this is the one we mentioned earlier with the amazing showers!), with loch views, a cute cafe onsite, and within walking distance of a grocery store and bus stop.
  • Bunchrew Caravan Park Ltd : A tranquil campground three miles from Inverness, with RVs for rent and “eco-chalets” in addition to campsites. We stayed here and loved it as a basecamp for exploring the Highlands, and enjoyed the ice cream truck that came by!
  • Huntly Castle Caravan Park : Well-equipped park near Aberdeenshire within walking distance to town, the castle, and the River Deveron.
  • Oakwood Caravan & Camping Park : One of the newest caravan parks in Scotland (opened in 2018), near Aviemore in Cairngorms and open year-round.
  • Culloden Moor Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite : Six miles from Inverness, this campground has beautiful views across the Nairn Valley and a bus stop out front that takes you into town or to the famed Culloden Battlefield.
  • Beauly Holiday Park : If you’re driving the NC500 or exploring the Highlands, this is one of the best caravan parks in Scotland. The park has its own nature reserve and walking paths, yet is within one hour of many of the country’s top attractions.
  • Bunree Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite : This absolutely gorgeous Highlands site is well-located near the small town of Glencoe. This spot shows off the best of Scotland camping, located right on a pebble beach on Loch Linnhe and near Ben Nevis and some of Scotland’s best hiking opportunities.

Camping in & around the Isle of Skye

  • Skye Camping and Caravanning Club Site : One of our personal favorite Scotland campsites! In Portree on the Isle of Skye, the facilities and views here are immaculate, there are grazing sheep and adorable Highland cows, and the camp store is stocked with farm-fresh eggs and milk.
  • Portree Campsite : A quintessential Scotland camping experience with gorgeous views (including of Old Man Storr!) and a variety of site types.
  • The Wee Campsite : On the shores of Loch Carron and a great stop along the NC500 or on your way in/out of the Isle of Skye, this small site is fairly small (as the name suggests) but well-maintained and has stunning views.

Camping in Trossachs National Park

  • Milarrochy Bay Camping and Caravanning Club Site : One of the best Scotland campsites for exploring The Trossachs National Park, with a location right on Loch Lomond.
  • Cashel Campsite : We chose to base ourselves at this remote, gated site for our visit to Lake Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. You can launch kayaks from camp and everything is 30-40 minutes away, making it feel like you’re wild camping in Scotland.

Camping in Northeast

  • Scone Camping & Caravanning Club Site : One of the best caravan parks Scotland has for those interested in exploring castles and architecture. It’s 1.5 hours from Edinburgh and has tent and RV sites, plus four glamping safari tents.
  • Blair Castle Caravan Park : A mix of Scotland campsites and glampsites, this caravan park is situated at the entrance to Cairngorms National Park.
  • Glenmore Campsite : Nestled into the forest of Cairngorms National Park with beautiful mountain views and direct access to Loch Morlich’s beaches, this is Scotland camping at its finest!

Camping on remote Scottish Isles

  • Wheems Organic Farm and Campsite : A laid-back campground on the Orkney Islands (you’ll take a ferry from the mainland) with gorgeous sea views and a small shop selling organic produce.
  • Runach Arrain Campsite : If you’re looking for something a bit different from the caravan parks in Scotland, check out this glamping site on the Isle of Arran , off the west coast. Three luxury, locally-made yurts with wood stoves and private bathrooms are situated among orchards and gardens.

Best glamping in Scotland

Scotland Glamping

As you dive into planning your Scotland camping trip, you’ll likely notice that many campgrounds offer “glamping” accommodations in addition to tent and RV sites. Considered “glamorous camping,” having some luxuries and sleeping in a more substantial shelter while also enjoying the outdoors, glamping is extremely popular throughout the country.

The most common glamping accommodations you’ll find in Scotland are pods and yurts , but you’ll also see some safari tents, teepees, and bothies, which are small, basic homes typically offering shelter but little in the way of amenities.

Psst! If you’re interested, we put together an ultimate guide to glamping with all of the best Scotland glamping stays and everything you need to know before you book.

Scotland’s glamping amenities vary drastically. Some accommodations may include electricity, heat, proper bathrooms, and even a hot tub, while others provide nothing more than a physical structure to sleep in.

Sometimes glampers need to bring their own bed linens and cooking supplies, much like a traditional camping trip, so be sure to read the fine print before booking!

What are bothies?

While you’ll find these available for rent at some Scotland campsites, the term also refers to remote shelters on both private and public land that are left open for anyone to use (such as backpackers).

Bothies are unique to this part of the UK and historically, caretakers and groundskeepers lived in them. Many have been preserved in keeping with Scotland’s outdoor culture and they’re most common in the Highlands and Outer Hebrides — though you’ll find a few odd ones scattered everywhere.

UK Camping & Caravanning Club

When researching Scotland camping options, you’ll likely come across this name.

The UK Camping & Caravanning Club is actually the biggest and oldest camping club in the entire world, and it has a stellar reputation for having some of the nicest campsites and caravan parks in Scotland.

To put it simply, caravan clubs are identical to RV memberships in North America (like Good Sam or Passport America).

Members pay annual dues in order to have exclusive access and get deeply-discounted rates at the club’s network of campgrounds, as well as top-notch amenities and facilities. Other caravan club perks include exclusive, members-only sites, discounts on camping and outdoor gear, special insurance rates for RVers, and more.

In most cases, non-members are welcome at caravan club campsites. However, expect to pay an additional non-member fee.

Note that if you rent a campervan in Scotland, there’s a chance that your rental will include a club membership for free. This was exactly our experience when we rented from Bunk Campers !

Birkenshaw - Beautiful Shepherd’s Hut in the Highlands.

Offering sea views, Birkenshaw - Beautiful Shepherd’s Hut in the Highlands. Is an accommodation set in Dornoch, 8 km from Royal Dornoch Golf Club and 16 km from Dunrobin Castle. Situated 7.6 km from Carnegie Club Skibo Castle, the property features a garden and free private parking. On clear days, guests can head outside to enjoy the luxury tent 's outdoor fireplace or simply kick back and relax. Anna renovated the hut very beautifully, it´s so cozy and comfy! The oven was set up with a fire to be enlightened , when we arrived, even a welcome drink and cookies were there! The composting toilet hut was so cool, but a bit scary , when you needed to walk to it during the night. But for the little business a chamber pot was there! The oven worked very well, once we got the right airflow to it. In fact so good, that we needed a window open a night . The hut is set in the garden of Anna and Steven, but you can barely see the house. You get more of a feeling, that the hut is set somewhere very lonesome. The birds haveing a snack in front of your window was so cute to watch. The garden is like a magical place. The outdoor shower was a bit to chilly that day, the kitchen room had everthing you needed. It was an extraordinary stay, going back to the roots and be aware, how much or less you live sustainably. Thanks for the reminder, that all you need in live is less than you might think and we all need to reduce our waste drastically.

We spent a couple of nights staying in the Kite’s Rest… Absolutely great place to stay with great hosts who were extremely helpful and great to chat away to :-) The setting is perfect; quiet, great views and loads of space. We had glorious weather so made use of the BBQ and sat out on the decking area morning and night! We thoroughly enjoyed our time - Thanks!

4-berth safari tent

African luxury safari meets Scottish country getaway, the safari tent is a great way to get away from it all and get back to nature. Relax in the hot tub by day and enjoy stunning views of the countryside, or star gaze with a glass of bubbly at night. Go for a stroll on the beach, grill up some seafood on the BBQ or sit around the fire pit in the evening toasting marshmallows and live the safari glamping experience.

If the weather is a little cooler (this is Scotland after all), the tent has a wood effect heater so you can snuggle up and read or play a card game or two. The kitchen is fully equipped (fridge, gas hob, microwave, crockery, utensils) so you can also cook up a meal inside.

Sleeping-wise, there is 1 bedroom with a double bed and a second with 2 bunk beds - all linen and towels are provided. A brand new shower and toilet block is available on site.

N.B. The vibe here at Highfield is pure relaxation with an opportunity to reconnect with nature and what's important in life. Our no-noise after 10.00 p.m. policy is to allow all our guests to fully recharge their batteries and make the most of their stay.

*Price per night is based on a two-night stay.
