Luxury vacations & travel.
I only need accommodations for part of my trip
Your Luxury Vacation
Vacations are the ultimate escape from the humdrum of everyday. So go all in and head for a luxury vacation destination. Maybe a week in the sublime Sonoran Desert, Southern California, on a Palm Springs luxury vacation : a favorite with the most extravagant travelers. Indulge in its incredible accommodation—from luxury-for-less to full-on five-star fabulous. If your idea of a luxury getaway is more intrepid than indulgent, go for a Galapagos luxury vacation package . This enchanting Ecuadorian archipelago is an adventurer’s dream, with activity in abundance. And when you can tear yourself away from the vivid wildlife, the accommodation is pretty impressive, too.
Book only the best luxury vacations
Choosing your luxury vacation destination is just the start. Elevate your opulent experience by adding all the extras for a grander getaway. When you search with Expedia, find your way to the filters, and check amenities to your heart’s content. Add ocean views, 5-star features, spas, hot tubs, pools...you name it, it's yours! When you’re ready to take the plunge, bundle your airfare, accommodation, and car rental in one to ensure the ultimate luxury of utter convenience.
Top destinations for Luxury Vacations
Get fancy with luxury Caribbean vacations
Finding luxury in the Caribbean is just about as easy as finding water. A luxury vacation here can include state-of-the-art amenities that will put you mere steps away from the beach, all while offering stunning extras like spa treatments, world-class cuisine, and watersport adventures such as sailing, kayaking, and more.
Enjoy luxury vacations in Florida
Luxury vacations in Florida will have you enjoying a taste of the high life by the beach, with emerald waters and white sands just steps away. A proper luxurious accommodation will offer private access to the beach, with some going so far as to provide equipment like surfboards and kayaks for you to enjoy.
Explore the wonders of Italy on a luxury vacation
On a luxury vacation to Italy, you can enjoy a one-of-a-kind experience. Italian luxury means access to some of the best shopping opportunities in the world. Additionally, you'll find pristine historical sites with guided tours, along with some famous beaches with relaxation and watersports available in equal measure. Of course, luxury is also available in the countryside by vibrant vineyards.
Embark on a luxury vacation to California
A luxury vacation in California can have you feeling like a star. Even when you're not trying to live the high life in Hollywood, you can enjoy world-class beaches and stunning parks from accommodations that offer high-end amenities like private pools and hot tubs. Many California rentals are designed to appeal to wealthy stars, so that's what you can expect to feel like.
Head north for a luxury vacation in Alaska
Journeying to Alaska on a luxury vacation means enjoying all the warmth you need while exploring the cold and fascinating northern land. Luxury accommodations in Alaska feature powerful heating systems as well as equipment to enjoy popular local activities like fishing and hiking. For especially refreshing luxury, be sure to check out local spas and saunas.
Your luxury vacation questions answered
What should i look for when booking a luxury vacation package.
If only the lap of luxury will do, these indulgent vacation packages are for you. Live the high life on pristine private beaches and choose opulent on-site spas or in-room massages. Pick anything designed to make life easy, be that childcare or a swim-up bar.
What are some of the most luxurious vacation spots?
St. Lucia puts the L (and the U) in luxury. Indulge your every whim in a stunning 5* suite with just the whispering winds of the Caribbean Sea for company. If you prefer a social sojourn, no place does bright-light luxury quite like Las Vegas . Think in-room pools, quick access casinos, and restaurant-grade room service.
Can I book a cheap luxury vacation?
If you thought luxury meant enormously expensive, think again. Cheap luxury vacations are just a few clicks away. You could bundle your accommodation, airfare, and car rental to keep prices down. And look to travel outside peak season for luxury trips that won’t break the bank. Whatever you’re looking for, just sort by price to find the best deals on Expedia.
How can I book the perfect luxury family vacation?
For little luxuries the kids will love, look for waterparks, easy beach access, and amazing on-site activities. Check the family-friendly box to find great breaks for the whole clan, and fiddle with the filters to add the likes of kids clubs and free Wi-Fi to your extravagant adventure. For snow babies, Whistler’s First Tracks Lodge boasts hot tubs with snowy mountain views and easy access to the Creekside Gondola. In warmer climes Encore Resort at Reunion in Orlando is slide-tastic and just round the corner from Mickey.
What are some destinations for a luxury vacation in the USA?
With luxury vacations on offer all year round, you can find extravagance every day in the USA. Tantalizing Tahoe City is postcard-perfect come snow or sun, while the natural wonders of Arizona are hard to resist. Of course, we can’t forget New England , where elegant country chateaus and sweeping leafy landscapes are the perfect setting for a luxurious break.
How can I find the best all-inclusive luxury beach vacations?
Check the all-inclusive filter and luxury options abound. Choose to add more magnificent touches too, say a spa, hot tub or ocean view—all discoverable using the amenities filter. Then, with everything booked and paid for together, you won’t have to lift another finger.
How can I find the best deals on luxury vacation packages?
The best deals on luxury vacations usually lie away from peak season. For more affordable indulgence, you could also look for locations less traveled—maybe Myanmar or Belize for luxury off the beaten path.
Can I book a luxury trip with free cancellation and/or flexible dates?
There are few luxuries like freedom and flexibility. Filter by payment option to find all available trips with free cancellation. You can pick from buy now, pay later plans too.
Why should I book my luxury vacation with Expedia?
Our incredible inventory, delightful deals, and flexible filters make it easy to build your dream luxury vacation. ATOL protection, and airfare, accommodation and car rental packages are the icing on the cake.

Ten luxury holidays for 2023
Get planning for a year of travel.
By David Ward Destination Specialist
published about 1 year ago
As we enter spring, there's still so much of 2023 to plan for, and a host of travel opportunities to enjoy. To get you inspired, our specialists have picked out ten of their top trips – their ones to watch for the rest of this year, and indeed beyond. There's everything from indulgent rail journeys in South Africa and Europe, to luxury island-hopping in Greece and adventure-packed holidays in Chile under the Northern Lights in Lapland. Whatever you choose, we’ll be on hand to help you plan your journey right down to the smallest details.
1. An alternative route on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express
While the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express will continue to wow guests across a full range of routes for 2023, many of its classic journeys are already sold out. However, if you’ve got your heart set on a trip aboard the world’s leading luxury train then fear not, as there are still cabins and suites available on some of its newer routes, including one of our favourites – Venice to Amsterdam. Not only will you experience the myriad delights of Italy’s floating city, including a stay at one of its leading hotels, but you’ll also have the chance to soak in the sights and sounds of the Dutch capital, canals, coffee shops and all. Of course, it’s all enjoyed alongside the Art Deco splendours and fine dining of the world’s most famous train – perfection!
2. An Arctic adventure
There are few more exciting winter holidays than those to the snowy wilds above the Arctic Circle. Adventure abounds at every turn, played out across everything from husky safaris to snowmobiling as the Northern Lights dance in kaleidoscopic swirls overhead. But, it’s not just the thrills of the wilderness that makes Finnish Lapland so alluring. It’s also a region known for its innovative accommodation and stunning Nordic design. And, there are few better examples of this than the Arctic TreeHouse Hotel ¬– all glass, steel and pine set to a glorious backdrop of snow-dusted boreal forest.
3. A luxury journey through the wilds of Chile
This epic itinerary brings you deep into wilds of Chile, beginning with the Atacama Desert where geysers spring from bubbling pools, flamingos dot emerald-green lakes and majestic red-rock landscapes are reminiscent of another world entirely. You'll then journey south to Chilean Patagonia and the majestic spires of Torres del Paine, which contrast monolithic glaciers and giant snow-capped peaks beneath which lonely guanacos roam. In between, you’ll explore the urban intrigue of Santiago and get lost within Valparaíso colourful maze. You’ll take it all in with ultra-indulgent stays in some of the country's finest hotels while expert private guided will be on hand to bring each destination to life. Expect everything from city walks with local experts to horseback rides in search of eagles among the Andean peaks.
4. A wildlife epic in Tanzania
The Great Wildebeest Migration is often regarded as one of the world's most spectacular natural events, and rightly so. Characterised by millions of wildebeest hurtling across the open plains from Tanzania to Kenya, hunted along the way by elusive cheetah and lion, the annual spectacle is wonderfully witnessed with this tailor-made itinerary. You'll start in the aromatic coffee plantations of volcanic Arusha before heading to the iconic wilds of the Serengeti and the 'Garden of Eden' – the Ngorogoro Crater. It's all enjoyed between nights in a collection of elegant tented camps, evocative of the safaris of yesteryear, but with an added dash of luxury, showcased in private verandas, all-inclusive drinks, delicious meals and daily ranger-led game drives.
5. A taste of coast and culture, Italian style
Staying closer to home, this two-centre Tuscan break is a true celebration of la dolce vita. It all begins on Italy’s sparkling west coast with a five-star stay at the superb Baglioni Cala del Porto. The private beach and gorgeous pool beckon for a spot of sun-kissed relaxation, of course. But so do the vineyards, medieval towns and historic castles which dot the surrounding countryside. And, be sure to explore pretty Punta Ala, with its cobblestone street and al fresco pizzerias. You’ll then pick up your hire car for the scenic drive to Florence, passing through a glorious rural idyll en route to the Renaissance wonders of one of Europe’s genuine city greats. Here, between nights in one of its premier hotels, you’ll have the chance to explore on a guided walking tour, taking in the likes of the famous Duomo and Ponte Vecchio bridge.
6. An island-hopping adventure in Greece
Another superb option for the European summer, this island-hopping adventure will see you explore two of Greece’s most postcard-perfect islands – Mykonos and Santorini. Packed full of instagrammable moments, you’ll need to have your camera fully charged as you combine stays in super-stylish hotels – both members of the Leading Hotels of the World – with expert-led tours of the likes of ancient Delos in Mykonos and the volcanic wonders of Santorini. You’ll even have the chance to climb up to a still-active crater rim. Of course, there’s plenty of time for relaxation, too, perhaps with a gentle stroll and taverna lunch in idyllic Fira or with some downtime at the spa, by the pool or on the one of the islands’ gorgeous beaches.
7. A rail journey through the heart of South Africa
Returning to the rails, this epic adventure pairs the cultural and coastal delights of Cape Town with the ultimate Big-Five safari in the world famous Kruger National Park. But, that's not all. As well as the chance to marvel at Table Mountain, stroll penguin-dotted beaches, explore one of the New World's standout wine regions and watch lions and leopards prowl in the wild, this not-to-be-missed trip also includes a journey to remember on Rovos Rail – South Africa's most luxurious train.
8. A tour of northern Spain by luxury train
Staying on the rails, but returning to Europe, this holiday explores one of Europe’s most historic region aboard one of its most elegant trains – think live bar-car music, nights spent in one of the world’s largest train suites and full-board, multi-course dining paired with complimentary fine wines. The route itself winds along Spain’s north coast, tracing the ancient Way of St James pilgrims trail between San Sebastián and Santiago de Compostela, with its imposing Gothic cathedral. In between, you’ll be treated to the very best the region has to offer, including the modernist marvels of Bilbao, Romanesque Oviedo, some magnificent national parks and countless seaside towns and villages home to everything from ancient cave art to thousand-year-old shrines.
9. An Indian Ocean escape
For a change of pace, head east for a combination of coast and culture which pairs the centuries-old forts and temples of Sri Lanka with a the paradisiacal islands of the Maldives. You’ll kick things off in Colombo with a stay at one of the city’s leading boutique hotels, a wonderfully relaxing introduction to the country. It’s then time to head north, joining expert guides to explore the UNESCO-listed treasures of Kandy, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya – an ancient rock fortress towering above the jungled plains. Next, take the train into the highlands where verdant tea plantations set the scene for your luxurious mountain guesthouse, followed by a night back in Colombo before your flight to Madives for five nights of incomparable indulgence at the exclusive Baros resort.
10. A taste of Agatha Christie's Egypt
This is your chance to follow in Agatha Christie's footsteps with your very of Egyptian adventure. Rather than the suspense and drama of the movie, your holiday will pair the very best of ancient Egypt with more than a sprinkle of Hollywood stardust. Begin with a luxury stay in Cairo, your hotel overlooking the famed Pyramids, before setting off to explore all the Nile has to offer, uncovering the treasures of Luxor and the Valley of the Kings in the company of the Egyptologist, taking a scenic flight to the temples of Abu Simbel and enjoying a guided sailing on a traditional felucca boat. It's all paired with the very best in onboard hospitality, courtesy of Sanctuary Retreats.

The Relais & Châteaux marque constitutes a guarantee that these vacation rentals will meet your expectations, and provide a hotel-style experience in accommodation that feels like a home-from-home.
The ultimate local experience We pride ourselves on embedding our hotels, luxury villas and home rentals within local culture - that means we are proudly part of a local area in a meaningful way, sympathetic and responsive to local influences and people, and dedicated to improving its ecology and sustainability. Each property reflects local architectural styles, history and heritage, often in incredible, unexpected places and situated within lush gardens and outdoor spaces rich with local flora and fauna. Along with our distinct culinary approach, which leans heavily on locally sourced ingredients, our vacation rentals truly embody the opposite of mass tourism and give our guests what we call true local ‘anchorage’.
Safe and secure accommodation Our luxury villas and vacation rentals are safe and secure, with their own dedicated entrances. Each villa rental is deliberately situated separately from our hotels, so you feel independent, but their proximity means you can balance privacy with the feeling of being looked after, with daily assistance only a phone call away. It makes checking in and out supremely easy and gives you the freedom to choose when you want to be left alone and when you would like to enjoy hotel services.
Home comforts in luxurious surroundings Our luxury home rentals ensure you have ample room to relax and luxurious facilities to take advantage of. Among our quality assessment criteria are minimum standards in floor space, communal dining areas inside and out for convivial moments, fully equipped kitchens, and exclusive outdoor facilities including private terraces and gardens, vacation rentals with private pools - and some rentals with private beach . Expect luxurious furnishings and bespoke decoration and artwork that reflect local culture and materials.
Exceptional cuisine The proximity of our luxury villas and home rentals to our hotels means you can access our renowned dining facilities – and network of Michelin-starred chefs - whenever you choose. From in-room dining to bespoke picnics, and with private chefs and butlers available at some properties, you can be sure that you will benefit from our refined approach to food and drink, using locally sourced, seasonal ingredients – some grown on site – along with local wine. Some 80 or so Relais & Châteaux hotels even keep bees and incorporate their own honey in the cuisine.
Incredible experiences Alongside our luxury self-catering villas , many of our properties are able to offer additional tailored local experiences to ensure you make the best of your time away from home. From taking advantage of local gastronomy or wine-tasting experiences, to enjoying sites of historic and archaeological interest, fitness and wellbeing opportunities, garden tours, shopping destinations, watersports or wildlife spotting, your hosts are available to make suggestions on how to make the best of the local culture, and can often arrange transfers or make reservations for you.
Fully personalised vacations The ultimate benefit of a Relais & Châteaux villa vacation is that everything is on your terms. From your choice of location and our wide selection of incredible luxury retreats , to how you spend your time and which of our five-star services you choose to access from the comfort of your private villa , it adds up to the most customisable vacation possible. Guests in our luxury home rentals can plan their own activities as a group of friends or family, or use our babysitting services for that extra bit of freedom. WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT US
Journey Mexico planned a wonderful anniversary trip for us. Zach and his team really know the best spots in Mexico. They were there with ideas and support throughout the trip. Fantastic and super responsive. Highly recommend.
Jessica S. G. October 2022
We worked with Journey Mexico on our recent trip to Merida. The trip was amazing and exceeded all expectations. Each day and activity was well planned. For a family of 5 (including 3 children) it’s often hard to find something for everyone. Everyone that we encountered was phenomenal, from our travel assistant Jesús, to our driver Sergio, to our tour guide Angel. They worked hard to make sure that our trip was all that we wanted it to be, and it was perfect! I highly recommend!

Wonderful, attentive and responsive Travel Agency based in Mexico. My wife and I booked a 10-day trip to Oaxaca, Mexico with Journey Mexico. They were very helpful and responsive during the planning stage. Followed up to make sure we were ready for the trip and assigned a travel assistant to assist during our trip. She was always just a text message away - 24/7. Very helpful. We had an issue come up during the trip and she immediately responded and did everything possible to solve the problem. Highly recommend this group - we will use them any time we are traveling in Mexico.
Steven C. October 2022, Oaxaca City & Puerto Escondido
Thanks for following up. We had a lovely time - most specifically the property was perfect for the weekend & the staff, Rodolfo & Chef Hector & team were absolute perfection. They were the perfect addition to making our stay so personal (and with the most amazing food & cocktails!). Our driver for our Tulum trip was also very kind & attentive. Thanks again for all the help and support from your side setting up the activities & managing our menu & grocery, and responding to our many questions!! The group is already looking forward to booking with Journey Mexico again.

I just wanted to thank you for all you did to arrange our stay at Villa Mariola. Everything was ready for us when we arrived and the safety gates created the safe environment that we needed with 4 toddlers. The villa was comfortable and the staff was pleasant, hard working and accommodating. The chef’s Rafael and Alex are amazing, every meal that they created was like eating in an upscale New York restaurant. Thank you again, Debbie and the Tosi and Muser families

Nature's Best: Alaska
Our Tour guide, Wayne, was fantastic! He went above and beyond; to make sure we were comfortable on the bus and on the tours! He also got us as close as he could when there were animal sightings! Lane, our driver, was also an excellent driver; and he kept us safe on the narrow and winding Mountain roads! Hats off to these two!
Spectacular Alaska!
Enjoyed the tour but was very disappointed at the lack of excursions offer during our free time. Globus prides itself on a variety of excursions so there are many choices for all types of personalities. This is my first tour ever that the excursions were so limited! I had to go online to book my on excursions during my free time. I booked a Northern lights tour and a trolley tour which I do not understand why Globus could not offer them and more, if so, I would not have had to spend my free time online searching for things to do. Brady was an excellent tour director always insuring we were taken care of and there to assist with any issues or concerns we may have had. Our bus driver Rose was a breath of fresh air! I have never had a tour bus driver who was that personal, knowledgeable, involved, and as full of life as Rose! She truly needs to become a tour director! Overall, the only reason I give the tour an 9 over a 10 scale is due to the lack of free time excursions. Thank you Brady and Rose for a great Alaskan experience! Respectfully and sincerely, Rhonda and Robin “Elton” Parker

Northern California (8 Days)
The Northern California trip was fantastic. Impressed by the thoughtful trip planning and pacing. Our tour director, Jason, was one of the best we’ve ever had. Would DEFINITELY recommend this trip to others!
American Parks Trail (Classic, End Denver, 9 Days)
The trip was great! The tour director and the driver both were very knowledgeable.
Enchanting Canyonlands (Classic, 7 Days)
I wanted to say excellent, but there is room for improvement. The website could be better. It required passport information with no option for "Not applicable." As a U.S. Citizen traveling in the U.S., a passport wasn't needed, but I continued to get reminders to complete my profile. Fortunately, I got an email assuring me I didn't need the passport, but I suggest updating your website. The descriptions of several days said "relaxed start," but most days, we had to be up early enough to be showered, dressed, and have our suitcases ready for pickup by 6:30 or 7:00 a.m. As an east-coaster, that was fine for me because of the time difference, but normally, I wouldn't call that relaxed. The sites were stunning, the optional activities were great, although one that I wanted to do got canceled due to a storm and there was no way to reschedule. The lodging was great at each stop and the provided meals were excellent. Some of the suggested "on-your-own" spot for meals were not so good. The change of lodging plans at the Grand Canyon was disappointing because we didn't get to see the sunrise at the Grand Canyon or the stars late the night before. Sedona, The Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, Bryce Canyon, and Zion National Park were all fantastic, and we were blessed with great weather for most of the trip. Everyone should see these wonders of God's creation.

8 Day Grand Teton & Yellowstone Explorer
Great tour, we feel like we saw everything there was to see and then some. We had a fun group and Dennis Bailey, our guide, was ever attentive. He held us together really well with great stories and knowledge of both Grand Teton and Yellowstone. We highly recommend touring with Southwest Adventure Tours.

It was an enjoyable good for thw value tour. The first night accomodation in Circus Circus was very poor. Other accomations were fair to good. The transportation was good. A little more information about geography and history would be helpful and add to the total experience. All breakfasts and some dinners need to be included to make it hassel free.

Guide was knowledgeable and helpful. It was a good group
It was an awesome tour. Saw and did so much. I would recommend Trafalgar to tour with. We are booked next year for The Colorful Trails of the SW in September. I want to say our tour director,Tyler Browning, is one of the best guides we have had. He is personable, friendly, caring, very knowledgeable and on top of everything. He is GREAT!

The experts: travel agents on 20 ways to book a sustainable and sensational summer holiday
Keen to get away? Here is how to find a great deal, pick the perfect destination and support the local community
A holiday should be relaxing, but booking one can be a fraught experience, with days lost to endless scrolling, comparing reviews and prices. How can you be sure you are getting a good deal? Travel agents share their tips for the most affordable, sustainable and memorable trips.
1. Book like an agent
“Everybody views themselves as a travel agent and they can be up to a point,” says Paul Sharp from Newcastle upon Tyne, who operates as part of the Travel Counsellors network and has 30 years’ experience in the industry. He says the rise of budget airlines and online booking have led to people feeling confident about organising trips themselves. What is the one thing we should know when doing so? “It is a false economy to book things separately because you have no protection,” Sharp says. He gives the example of someone planning a trip to South Africa to watch rugby, who booked flights with the airline and hotels directly and rugby tickets elsewhere. The game was cancelled but the flights and hotel were non-refundable. If they had been booked together, the trip would have been covered under package travel regulations. “Book with a company you trust and know – there are a lot of sites that crop up and you don’t really know their provenance,” he says.
2. Be an early bird
“Planning in advance is always going to be better value,” says Helen Youngman , an independent travel agent and partner at 360 Private Travel , based near Norwich. “Late deals do exist, but a lot of hotels use ‘dynamic pricing’, which means prices increase as availability goes down. Flights are only going to increase in price the closer you get to the departure date because the fuller the flight gets, the more expensive it will be.” Sharp adds: “Don’t hang on for a last-minute deal because you could end up disappointed. Scheduled flights tend to be available about 11 months in advance, so that is the best time to book. Also, at that stage, a lot of hotels and accommodation providers will have early-bird specials.”
3. If you do book late, be flexible
Jessica Bollinger, who works in the Bristol branch of Danish travel agent Kilroy , which specialises in youth and adventure holidays, agrees that late deals are now something of a myth. “They are not unheard of, but with a last-minute deal there are certain things you’re not going to get. So you have to be really open-minded as to where you’re going to go,” she says.
4. Avoid peak season
The cheapest time to travel is always outside the school holidays, says Youngman, with Christmas and new year the most expensive times. Can you get a good deal if you fly on Christmas or New Year’s Day itself? Sometimes, she says, “but a lot of people are catching on to that trick”. If you have to go in the school holidays, be open to going somewhere off the beaten track. “Being clever about destinations is a good plan,” says Youngman. “In Europe, look farther east at places such as Montenegro, Albania and Georgia. And Morocco is a good summer destination for families.”
5. Midweek can be more affordable
“Midweek can be cheaper, it just depends on availability,” says Youngman. “A Thursday to Monday trip is going to be slightly more expensive than Monday to Friday, but all travel fares are based on availability, so the further in advance you can book, the better.”
6. Take out travel insurance when you book
A lot of people sort out their insurance at the airport, says Sharp, but it is best to do it as soon as you have booked your trip. He says: “Travel insurance doesn’t just cover you if you lose a bag or are poorly while you are away. It also covers you should you need to cancel for an insurable reason before you travel.” This includes illness or a bereavement.
7. On solo trips, consider a group tour
If you are travelling alone, “pretty much anywhere is possible”, says Youngman. “Embarking on your first solo trip can be daunting, which is why small group tours are an amazing way to travel with like-minded people. Some companies I work with are doing specialist female-only tours with visits to female entrepreneurs, co-operatives, makers and bakers. Small group tours are great because they handle all the logistics, include really immersive experiences and are safe. They pick you up from the airport, and from that point onwards, you’re travelling with other people and you’ve got an expert guide.”
8. Have a daily budget
“We advise setting a daily limit for yourself while travelling and then multiplying that number by the days you are away to get the amount to save for your spending money,” says Bollinger. “When you work it out like this, it makes a lot more sense in people’s minds, especially young people who don’t have much budgeting experience. It also keeps you accountable to yourself, so you don’t blow everything right at the beginning and then have nothing left for the end.” To stick to a tight budget, she says: “Cook food as you go along and use public transport instead of tourist buses – this will really help you save money.”
9. Consider all-inclusive options
“If you are going to spend a lot of time eating and drinking in the hotel, I recommend upgrading to an all-inclusive option if possible,” says Youngman, “especially if you’d like a cocktail or two and you’re grazing throughout the day. Otherwise it can all add up and when you check out it costs a fortune.” With active holidays such as skiing or safaris, she adds: “If you have the option to choose an all-inclusive package that includes the activities, food and drink, that is usually a more cost-effective way of travelling. Because sometimes they will really sting you on the extras and it will be more expensive.”
10. Work your way around the world
“A working holiday is a great way to fund your trip,” says Bollinger, who helps people book travel to Australia, New Zealand and Canada by organising working holidays so they can extend their stay. “A lot of jobs will be hospitality-related, but if you go to a more rural spot you can do farm work, and if you have qualifications already, sometimes those can be used. Working holidays in Canada are often at ski resorts near Vancouver, so you get the added benefit of being in a beautiful place to take advantage of the winter sports.”
11. Travel as sustainably as possible
“You can get to most places in Europe by train , so if you are open to slowing down and having a more relaxed itinerary, not only are you travelling more sustainably, but you have more time to absorb the culture surrounding you,” says Youngman. “Be good to the environment you are travelling to see.” She stresses the importance of limiting flights as much as possible, especially internally, and avoiding indirect long-haul options. “We highly recommend ‘open-jaw flights’, which means you fly into one destination and out of another, to limit the number of flights,” says Bollinger. “We also promote travelling for longer in one destination as opposed to trying to go to many in a short time, and travelling overland when possible, instead of taking multiple flights.”
12. Offset carbon emissions with a reputable company
When considering carbon from flights, says Thomas Power of Pura Aventura , a B Corp sustainable travel company in Brighton: “Don’t believe the airline schemes, or anyone else who promises you absolution for a few quid. While 85% of offset schemes may be worthless, there are high-quality carbon credits starting at about £20 a tonne.” These can be bought to compensate for CO 2 emissions. Companies such as “ C Level help you at least take positive action to balance your impact”, says Power.
13. Think of responsible travel as a ‘fair exchange’
When travelling, says Power, consider: “What are we giving and what are we receiving? Is it a fair exchange? Is somebody getting something in return for what I am receiving in this transaction?” This applies to everything from “taking a cruise to Venice and not giving anything to the city, to going camping in Sussex and getting a supermarket delivery to your tent instead of going to the village shop or buying eggs from the house down the road”. This concept of “fair exchange” can be beneficial for everyone, he says, by giving you access to unique experiences. “In terms of the economy, the less money that leaves the village, town or city, the better,” he says.
14. Embrace the great outdoors
If you camp out “you are closer to nature than any other accommodation option”, says Brodie Farrow, of the online camping and touring travel agent Pitchup . There are many benefits to this, she says: “It is really good for mental health. It is also a much more sustainable option: the carbon footprints of outdoor holidays tend to be much lower than hotel stays, as people travel by car rather than flying and it promotes local produce and low-impact activities such as hiking in the surrounding area. The accommodation or pitches are much less carbon intensive than hotels, too. And you have a positive impact on the community that you are visiting: camping attracts a higher number of customers at a lower cost than hotels do, which can help to underpin the viability of local facilities such as the shop, the bar and takeaway, and that benefits the wider community.”
15. If you are camping-phobic, glamp
“There really is something for everyone,” says Farrow. “You can get glamping accommodation with four-poster beds if you prefer camping in luxury, or you can go really wild and remote, with no facilities, out on your own and back to nature. I think you would be hard-pressed to say that there is nothing that appeals.” Although glamping has become a fairly pricey option, she says: “Some types are much cheaper than others. You can get some ‘pod-only’ camping accommodation, where you bring your own bedding, starting from £15 a night.”
16. If the weather is terrible …
… And you are under canvas, “try to keep your bedroom a wet-gear-free zone”, says Farrow. “Store and dry wet stuff in your porch area rather than in your bedroom compartment. Protect your equipment by putting it in plastic bags or dry bags. Don’t let anything touch your tent walls or you will have soggy socks.” For activities, she suggests, “swimming in the sea, because you are wet already, or going to the pub”. If you are disappointed by the weather on a non-camping holiday, “as annoying as it is, try to embrace it”, says Sharp. Many people come back from their holidays exhausted because they try to see and do everything when they’re away. Instead, he says: “Have a lie-in, ask local people which is the best restaurant for a long, lazy lunch and, most of all, relax and recharge your batteries – it’s a holiday after all.”
17. For best value destinations, try …
“Go for Belgrade over Berlin,” says Youngman. “It has an underground culture scene very similar to Berlin 20 years ago.” For backpackers, Bollinger suggests: “Some places in Central America can be really affordable. Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala are good options for someone wanting to think outside the box.” Sharp says there are more affordable options in “Cyprus, Bulgaria, Turkey and Egypt, compared with Spain and the Balearics, which are becoming increasingly expensive due to cost of living increases”. If you are looking for a staycation, North Yorkshire, Cumbria and Cornwall are some of the most popular UK locations on Pitchup, says Farrow, which can inflate the price. Locations such as Pembrokeshire and the Isle of Wight are cheaper.
18. For a trip of a lifetime that doesn’t cost the earth …
“North Macedonia is just amazing,” says Youngman. “Ohrid has beautiful cobbled streets, Ottoman architecture , fantastic food and wine and you can visit the most biodiverse lake in Europe.” Farrow says: “I camped at the foot of Ben Nevis last year before hiking up it. The weather was terrible but it was worth it for the unreal views.” While Bollinger’s most memorable trip was “Interrailing in Europe and finding a way to do things on my own. It was before smartphones, so it was a very interesting experience and built up my confidence in travelling.”
19. If in doubt, follow local people
“Live like a local person by taking local buses and eating in local spots,” says Bollinger. “It is going to save you money, and will also let you experience life in a different way.” Power adds: “People want to go to Peru but they never come back talking about Machu Picchu, they come back talking about the people they met. Buy local and connections will happen for you. In the absence of interaction with your host community, the things you see are just wallpaper.”
20. And remember: you get what you pay for
“If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is,” says Sharp.

Carlton Cannes, A Regent Hotel Vs Martinez
popular post today
Which hotel is best, Carlton Cannes, A Regent Hotel Vs. Hôtel Martinez, The Unbound Collection by Hyatt? While you might be tempted to earn or burn some World of Hyatt points at the Martinez, the Carlton Cannes, A Regent Hotel is an incredible hotel that is part of the IHG loyalty scheme and is head and shoulders above the Martinez in terms of luxury.
Carlton Cannes, A Regent Hotel, encapsulates French chic. I can’t think of another hotel that does it better. I share more details of this comparison below.
Our luxury travel concierge offers free benefits at both of these hotels, so please do drop us an email, and we should be able to offer you a brilliant deal.
1. Location
Cannes is a renowned city situated along the glamorous French Riviera on the southeastern coast of France. It is part of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region within the Alpes-Maritimes department. Surrounded by stunning natural landscapes, Cannes is bordered to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, which provides a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters.
Located about 24 kilometers (approximately 15 miles) southwest of Nice, Cannes is easily accessible from Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, the closest major airport serving both international and domestic flights. A taxi from the airport to Cannes usually takes around 45 minutes and costs about €100 EUR.
The Carlton Cannes, a Regent Hotel, enjoys a prime location in the heart of La Croisette, surrounded by high-end designer boutiques. Flanked by the Martinez Hotel on one side and the JW Marriott a few doors down on the other, it is part of a trio of hotels that face the famous La Croisette promenade.
Viewed from the beach, the Carlton Cannes, a Regent Hotel, distinguishes itself with its Belle Époque architecture, standing out as the most visually striking among its luxurious neighbors, but all offer an almost identical location.
Review: Hotel Martinez Cannes by Hyatt
Recommended Post In "Reviews"
Nestled in the vibrant heart of Le Croisette, Hotel Martinez Cannes by Hyatt boasts an ideal location along the famed waterfront promenade of Cannes. Renowned for its opulence and breathtaking vistas of the Mediterranean Sea, Le Croisette spans roughly 2 kilometers along the bay. Lined with swaying palm trees, prestigious hotels, high-end boutiques, and fashionable cafes, this iconic promenade epitomizes glamour and luxury, offering guests an unforgettable Riviera experience.
Designed by the renowned architect Charles Dalmas and built in 1911, the Carlton Cannes was inspired by its namesake in London. The hotel epitomizes the lavishness of the Belle Époque era with its elaborate ornamentation and grandiose style.
From the beginning, the Carlton Cannes has been a magnet for the affluent, hosting royalty, aristocrats, and stars, thus establishing itself as a symbol of luxury and elegance on the French Riviera.
World War II brought challenges when German forces commandeered the hotel and converted it into a military hospital. Restoration efforts after the war returned the hotel to its original glory, reaffirming its status as a top destination for the world’s elite.
Advancing into the second half of the 20th century, the hotel’s prominence grew as it became a favored spot for Hollywood’s elite, especially during the Cannes Film Festival, cementing its reputation as a center of glamour and celebrity.
The Carlton Cannes, now a Regent Hotel, was recently refurbished and now boasts a stunning new appearance. Guests are welcomed through revolving doors by the attentive concierge.
Upon entering the creamy white marble foyer, visitors are welcomed into a spacious and inviting environment, a notable departure from its previously more confined layout. Marble pillars and tasteful floral arrangements adorn the entrance area and the lobby lounge, where guests can enjoy delightful afternoon teas, evening aperitifs, and breakfast.
There simply is no comparison between the frontage or foyer of Carlton Cannes, A Regent Hotel, and the exterior of the Martinez Cannes. The Martinez does have a glamorous entrance with a circular driveway, but the entry and frontage feels smaller and less grand.
Inside, the Martinez lacks the intricate detailing that makes The Carlton so exceptional. Yes there is a marble foyer and a large art deco chandelier, but the area lacks the jubilence and sheer indulgence of the foyer in The Carlton Cannes.
IHG Vs. Hyatt. Which Is Best?
Recommended Post In "Tips"
Which hotel brand is best, IHG Vs. Hyatt? IHG includes the luxury hotel brands Regent, InterContinental, Six Senses, Kimpton, Vignette, and Indigo hotels. Hyatt's luxury hotels include Park Hyatt and Andaz, Hyatt Regency, and Grand Hyatt. We review which is best below. It's worth mentioning at this point that you can book both these brands via our luxury travel concierge to get extra free benefits such as complimentary breakfast, hotel credit, room upgrades, and your usual IHG or World of Hyatt rewards.
Both hotels are large, but both feel fairly boutique and historic despite their size.
4. Beach & Pool
The Carlton Cannes, A Regent Hotel, hosts Cannes’s most renowned beach club. It beckons guests and celebrities from April to October, making it the ultimate hotspot for socializing and enjoying the Cannes scene. The Carlton Cannes also has a lovely central garden with a pool.
The Martinez Beach Club is also renowned for its elegant atmosphere and its prime location on the sandy shores of the Mediterranean, just up the beach from the Carlton Beach Club. Here, guests can bask in the sun on plush loungers while enjoying panoramic sea views.
The decor of the Martinez Beach Club combines classic Riviera chic with modern luxury, featuring refined wood decking, stylish umbrellas, and comfortable, contemporary furniture. There is little to choose between these beach clubs as both have attentive staff providing everything from towels and sunscreens to bespoke cocktails and gourmet meals.
However, the beach club at the Carlton has a more prestigious reputation, and the Carlton has a stunning pool in their courtyard gardens. The Martinez does not have any pool at all.
Both hotels offer luxurious rooms. At the Carlton Cannes, A Regent Hotel, the balconies are Romeo and Juliette, and the feel is classy with cream and white decor punctuated by an orchid here and there. The views from the rooms at the front of the hotel are fantastic, but it does not offer sit-out balconies.
The rooms at the Martinez also feature spacious layouts and large windows, allowing natural light to flood the space and offering breathtaking views of either the Mediterranean Sea or the city of Cannes. The rooms feel more bland and less charismatic than those at the Carlton, but some do have the advantage over the Carlton as some have outside spaces with balconies or terraces.
6. Bar & Restaurant
The Carlton Cannes, A Regent Hotel, has three restaurants and the best internal bar in Cannes. Its dark, wood-paneled walls are reminiscent of a turn-of-the-century-old boys’ club, and the bright light fittings dangle off the ceilings, sprinkling brightness and fun into this sophisticated and stylish setting. This bar serves excellent cocktails along with all the other usuals. There is also a fun poolside bar, which is alfresco and very stylish. The renowned beach club is the place to be seen in Cannes and serves excellent food, too.
The restaurants at the Martinez Hotel in Cannes include La Palme d’Or, a Michelin-starred restaurant. Le Relais Martinez, a brasserie-style restaurant known for its vibrant atmosphere and classic French cuisine, the beach club restaurant, and The Martinez Bar, a chic and sophisticated venue where guests can unwind with expertly crafted cocktails, premium spirits, and fine wines.
We thought the bars and restaurants at The Carlton had the edge over the Martinez, although both are very good. We loved the bar at The Carlton Cannes, A Regent Hotel. This was a stand-out experience for us and a must-try, wherever you stay.
Marriott Vs. IHG. Which Is Best?
Which hotel brand is best, Marriott Vs. IHG? Marriott hotels include the luxury subsidiaries Bulgari, EDITION, Luxury Collection, JW Marriott, and Ritz-Carlton hotels. IHG includes the luxury hotel brands Regent, InterContinental, Six Senses, Kimpton, Vignette, and Indigo hotels. We review which is best below. Both Marriott and IHG luxury hotels are gorgeous, and which you pick will depend on which destination you are heading to. Many major cities and resorts house both a Marriott and an IHG hotel. These locations include London, New York, Los Angeles, Paris, and Cannes.
7. Conclusion
We love The Carlton Cannes, A Regent Hotel. Its Vogueish setting and stunning architecture are unbeatable and for us, this is the only hotel to stay at in Cannes if you’re looking for luxury. The Martinez is a great hotel with an Art Deco feel. It is probably the second-best hotel in Cannes but it lacks the joie de vivre of the Grand Damme that is The Carlton Cannes.

Spain's top holiday destinations
WHERE TO GO THIS YEAR
On each Long Weekend, Michael reveals the secrets, sites and people that make the cities tick. He finds the best restaurants, bars, food markets and hotels, as well as the places only the locals know and love.
The broadcaster, who is joining Good Housekeeping readers on a special rail journey aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express next year , explores hidden neighbourhoods and meets up with locals who show him the city’s hidden treasures.
In the vibrant and bustling Spanish capital Madrid , Michael returns to many places he knows well, having visited the city regularly for over 60 years.
The episode begins in the city centre on the busy Gran Via boulevard, home to Madrid’s famous golden triangle of art museums and El Retiro Park.
Michael then heads for an early lunch at a restaurant he knows well in the Old Town, one with only one dish on the menu: suckling pig.
Viewers can expect hotel bars with a shady history of espionage, a traditional confectioner who makes a classic Spanish nougat, and a bespoke tailor specialising in a very stylish cape.
In between the hustle and bustle, Michael squeezes in a visit to the family flat where he stayed as a boy, in the years after the Spanish Civil War.
Michael Portillo's Long Weekends airs from Friday 19 April, at 9pm on Channel 5.
