A Look At Amtrak Trips for Seniors (Train Travel for Fun!)

Amtrak Trips For Seniors

It’s a good time to be a senior citizen.

Seniors, especially those who are retired, often have a lot of free time. And these days, thanks to modern health care they’re usually in good shape too. Many seniors have good health, wisdom, and the chance to take advantage of free time to finally see more of the world.

Travel can be cheap and cheerful, or luxurious, it’s up to you.

While college graduates are often happy to travel by Greyhound, buses aren’t ideal for those who are a little older.

You could drive and set your own schedule.

Or you could take Amtrak!. For many, Amtrak is a go-to choice and it’s easy to understand why.

Fast and Fun Travel By Train

Many seniors prefer to spend their retirement days travelling and seeing the world.

Traveling by train is fast and fun. It can also be far more convenient than traveling using other methods. The Acela Express train travels at speed up to 150 miles an hour.

Travel to any new place can be stressful and difficult no matter what your age. But, travel is doubly stressful when you are a little older, for many reasons:

  • While many seniors are still fit a lot of the time, you may tire more easily and not want to walk long distances.
  • Waiting around may be an issue especially if you need to take medication at specific times.
  • You might find yourself a target for crime since there is the perception they you more likely to have things worth taking.
  • If you still have a job or family responsibilities, you need to be more stable and rigid in your schedules.
  • Maybe you are less comfortable with technology, e.g. ticket booking apps and maps.
  • You could also be used to a certain level of comfort. You’ve worked hard for decades and don’t want to ‘slum it’ when traveling.
  • Driving requires a lot of concentration and is mentally taxing – and physically exhausting – when going long distances .

Of course, some of the above challenges could be applied to younger travelers and families too. It’s one thing for a backpacking graduate to hitchhike and bus their way across the country. But if you’re looking to relax and unwind then you don’t want to be staying in hostels.

And, who wants to lose most of their trip to travel time.

Trains vs. Other Modes of Travel

The Greyhound bus is slow. You’ll also be packed into close quarters with a bunch of strangers. Plus, there is no room to roam.

Coach tours with premium tour operators are more comfortable than taking a Greyhound. But, this means that you have to travel to someone else’s schedule in a rigid way.

Driving means you can’t switch off and enjoy the travel. Plus, you’ll need to get in and out of your car frequently for rest breaks.

Flying is another option. Flights are fast and they can often be affordable. However, they come with their own challenges. While the actual length of a flight to another state could be quite short, you have to deal with getting to the airport, going through security hassles, and waiting at the gate. The whole process of checking in, flying, collecting your baggage at the other side (assuming it arrives) and then getting out of the airport at the other side can make air travel a pain for seniors .

Amtrak offers a convenient solution to those problems. Travel by train is fast and convenient and it can be affordable too.

Isn’t Train Travel Expensive?

A lot of people have the mistaken idea that travel by train is expensive. It’s true that if you travel in Business or Premium it can be expensive. Full price flexible tickets are expensive too. But there is a wide variety of ticket options and fares.

For example, a midweek ticket to travel from Los Angeles, California to Tucson, Arizona can cost $374 for a Superliner Roomette. But it costs as little as $38 for a Saver ticket!

The travel time for that Amtrak trip is around nine and a half hours. That’s a long time, true, but it would take longer on a Greyhound. There are also fewer options for transport times too.

Why Should Seniors Consider Travelling by Train?

There are many reasons seniors should consider train travel:

Senior Discounts

Amtrak offers a lot to senior citizens including a ten percent Senior discount on most fares. (Saver and Flexible fares aren’t included but Saver tickets are incredibly inexpensive anyway). There are also discount options for those with disabilities and their caregivers.

Easy Booking

Amtrak makes it easy to book since you can buy online or buy tickets at the station too.

Unlike some other companies, prices are almost always the same whether you buy online or at the station. There are also a handful of online-only special offers so it’s a great idea to sign-up on their email list to get notifications about these deals.

Accessible Trains and Travel

Amtrak offers accessible trains and there are lounges for people to relax in at the stations.

There are station services available too. So, you can get help with navigating the station and finding your train should you need it.

Serving the Whole of the US

Amtrak has stations all over the US. This means that you can find a great vacation no matter what your tastes.

There are some destinations that are very popular with senior citizens, though, such as:

  • Washington DC – A trip to the capital is a must if you’re interested in history and culture.
  • Yellowstone National Park – Nature lovers will enjoy a trip to this iconic national park.
  • Yosemite National Park – This is another must-visit destination for nature-lovers.
  • San Francisco – Enjoy the sights of San Francisco and soak up the atmosphere of the Pacific Coast.
  • Seattle – Everyone should visit at least once. Travel from Chicago to Seattle and you get to take in the Lewis and Clark trail along the way.
  • Las Vegas – A trip to Las Vegas to see the shows and place some bets will make for a nice trip at any time of year.
  • Hollywood – California is warm and varied; do the walk of stars, then head to some of LA’s beaches to relax

Amtrak Getaway Travel Packages for Seniors

When you travel with Amtrak, you can simply book a ticket to your destination. Or, you can also take advantage of one of the travel packages that they offer. These packages have train transportation and accommodations sorted out for you. All you have to do is show up at the train stations on time.

RELATED GUIDE: Great Senior All Inclusive Vacations

Take, for example, the Northern Rail Experience. This is a nine-day trip which currently (at the time of writing) costs $1549, and takes riders from Chicago to Seattle, then to San Francisco, then back to Chicago, along a lovely scenic route. Guests will spend five nights on board Amtrak and three nights in hotels. There is a dinner included as well as CityPASS or sightseeing tickets in Seattle depending on the time of year.

RELATED GUIDE: Exciting Adventure Vacations for Seniors

Amtrak does not skimp on accommodations either. You get to choose from Hyatt, Crowne Plaza, and other similar caliber hotels so you’ll be comfortable and get a great night’s sleep. You also have flexibility with the itinerary so you can choose to do the traditional attractions such as the Space Needle. You even have time to go further off the beaten track if you want.

Other Benefits of Amtrak Trips for Seniors

Amtrak has something to offer for anyone. From national park visits for those who still have a lot of energy, to casino experiences or scenic rides around some picturesque parts of the north, there are plenty of choices.

There are trips – even day trips for seniors – to suit any budget, too. Savvy shoppers can put together their own trips and save a lot of money with saver tickets for their travel and discounted hotel stays.

Those who just want the convenience of someone else planning their journey can opt for packages which are still good value for money given the quality of what they offer.

Final Thought

Rail travel offers the perfect balance of speed and convenience at a price that puts it within the reach of almost every senior citizen. Whether it’s a cross-country trip to visit the grandkids, or the start of the next big adventure, the train will get you there.

A gift certificate for train travel makes an excellent gift for older adults who love to travel too!

I am a senior with disabilities and I have traveled alone on AMTRAK for over four years Each year I visit with my two sisters and a nephew; we all meet in Laughlin, NV. and enjoy Thanksgiving together . I travel from Eugene, Oregon to Los Angeles, CA. They treat me so good with free breakfast, coffee and water, then free lunch and dinner then breakfast. The food is very good and it is brought to me as I can’t do stairs. I have my own bathroom and shower and I have my own privacy. The scenery is outstanding and blissful ! I really do recommend traveling by AMTRAK. You get to see so much more of our great land, ENJOY

Hello Margaret – Thanks so much for sharing your personal experiences traveling on Amtrak! – Scott

My husband and I are taking the Grand Rail Experience in March 2021. We’ll travel in a roomette on each train, with meals included. Starting from Chicago to Seattle for 2 days, then to LA on the Coast Starlight for 1 day, then to New Orleans for 2 days, on to DC for 2 days and then back to Chicago. It’s a 2 week trip with 7 days on the train and 7 at the stops. Each stop includes a tour of some kind. It costs us a total of a little over $5,000. We are looking forward to being able to see the scenery passing by instead of missing it while driving.

Does Amtrack offer travel packages for people with walking disabilities?

As a single senior I enjoy seeing the USA up close, and as is, in comfort. In several rail trips I have never encountered an Amtrak Employee who was Not entirely polite and helpful. I Truly wish I could “ride the rails” much more frequently! Thanks for the happy memories! Don

good reading and comments Amtrack is on the bucket list of travels..thank you Jackie

My daughter and I want to go on a senior tour with our own room and restroom. We are both seniors. We are in Jacksonville, Florida. Four or five days would be nice. Do you have anything going out of our city? Shelby

I have been looking for days for a trip my sister who lives in Florida and I (in Utah) can take together. Obviously we will have to meet at a station and continue on. She is disabled and I have arthritis which will prevent me from having a top bunk and she can’t get up to an upper level on a Superliner. We will want complete rooms, not roomettes and I am not interested in any hotel stays, only sleeping on the trains. It looks like adjoining rooms on a Superliner are upstairs. Poor planning I’d say. Let me know if anyone knows I am wrong

I want to experience the Moffatt Line between Winter Park, CO, and Denver, CO; Amtrak 5 and 6, California Zephyr.

Most convenient for me would be starting at either Granby or Winter Park, CO (whichever has the most convenient overnight parking) to Denver, then return the next morning, Denver back to Winter Park or Granby.

Cost of travel is foremost consideration, of course. Travel dates, to be determined – late May or early June? I am retired so most any days of the week are okay, and preferring least crowded days.

We booked a trip to Seattle and our train had two cars taken off it, and had to cancel the trip 3 weeks before the wedding we were going to go to. Missed the wedding. Paid $300 for trip insurance and essentially Amtrak cancelled my trip on me. I got my money back for the trip but it cost me $300 of insurance for a trip I wanted to take that they could no longer provide because they cut cars. I was not happy. Good Luck!

Please send us your brochure on your north American tours for this year

Hi Melanie- I am sorry – I am not a tour provider. Please contact Amtrak directly. This guide was more of a general introduction to train trips for seniors and the elderly. – Scott

I am interested in a train tour of American National parks. Yellowstone is the most important. I may be travelling alone. Some tours include Grand Teton and others. I have already been to the Grand Canyon Park. I am in Portageville Missouri. I would need to catch a close by train from Cape Girardeau or someplace close. I will also need a safe place to leave my automobile. Time on the trip is not an issue. I want something in the spring or next fall, not winter but summer is negotiable. Please contact me.

Looking for trip possibly to Colorado Would like price around 1000 each Anytime Ok Really more interested in finding some places price .Duration variable

This .would be my 75th BD present and something my husband and I have always dreamed of !!!!Problem VERY limited income.

How do I plan a train trip across the US?

Planning a train trip across the United States can be a fun adventure! Here’s a simple guide to help you plan your journey.

Firstly, figure out your starting point and where you want to go. Maybe you’re starting in New York and want to end up in Los Angeles. Once you know that, you can check the train routes that connect these places.

Next, look at the train schedules. Trains have specific times they depart and arrive, so you’ll need to pick a schedule that works for you. Some trains run daily, while others might only run on certain days.

Now, let’s talk about tickets. You can buy train tickets online or at the train station. Make sure to book in advance to secure your seat and possibly get a better deal. Tickets usually have different classes – like economy or first class – so choose the one that fits your budget and comfort needs.

Pack smart! Bring essentials like clothes, toiletries, and any medications you might need. Trains often have limited space, so try not to bring too much stuff.

During the trip, enjoy the scenery! Trains take you through cities, countryside, and more. You can bring snacks or buy food on the train, so you won’t go hungry.

Also, be ready for stops along the way. Trains make stops at different stations, and you might have some time to explore. Check the schedule to see how long you have at each stop.

Safety first! Follow the rules on the train, and don’t forget your mask. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on your belongings too.

Finally, when you arrive at your destination, take your time getting off the train. Stretch your legs and collect your belongings.

Planning a train trip is pretty straightforward. Just decide where you want to go, find a suitable train schedule, get your tickets, pack wisely, enjoy the journey, and stay safe!

What trains can you sleep on in the US?

An Elderly Man Sitting on a Train

In the United States, Amtrak offers a range of trains that provide overnight accommodations, allowing passengers to sleep comfortably during their journeys. Amtrak’s Sleeping Car accommodations are designed to meet the diverse needs of overnight travelers. These options include roomettes, bedrooms, bedroom suites, and accessible bedrooms.

A roomette is a popular choice for those seeking a cozy and private space. During the day, it serves as a comfortable seating area, and at night, the seats transform into beds, providing a restful sleep experience. Roomettes are ideal for solo travelers or couples looking for a more intimate setting.

For passengers desiring more space and additional amenities, bedrooms are available. These private rooms offer a more spacious environment, complete with beds, seating, and even private restrooms. Bedrooms cater to the needs of both solo travelers and couples, providing a comfortable and private retreat throughout the journey.

For larger groups or families traveling together, Amtrak offers bedroom suites, which consist of two adjoining bedrooms. These suites can accommodate one to four people, making them a versatile option for those traveling with companions. The bedroom suites provide a balance of shared space and individual privacy, ensuring a comfortable experience for everyone on board.

Additionally, Amtrak prioritizes accessibility with the inclusion of accessible bedrooms designed to accommodate passengers with mobility challenges. These bedrooms are equipped with features to ensure a comfortable experience for individuals with disabilities, providing inclusive travel options for a diverse range of passengers.

Is food included in Amtrak roomette?

When traveling with Amtrak in a roomette, passengers can look forward to the added convenience of complimentary meals as part of their overall experience. Amtrak offers a range of amenities to enhance the journey for those opting for a private room, and meals are one of the notable inclusions.

Aren’t train rides expensive in the US?

Train rides in the United States, particularly on Amtrak, have been a part of the transportation landscape since its establishment in 1971. However, the question of whether train rides are expensive comes with a nuanced answer.

Amtrak is the sole railway service covering the vast expanse of the country, offering connectivity between major cities. Yet, despite its monopoly on rail travel, opinions on its affordability and efficiency are divided.

Examining the average ticket prices for various routes provides insight into the cost considerations. For instance, a journey from New York, NY to Boston, MA, with a duration of 4 hours and 14 minutes, starts at $78.

Similarly, a trip from Boston, MA to New York, NY, covering the same duration, also begins at $78. The fare for a train from New York, NY to Philadelphia, PA, with a shorter duration of 1 hour and 6 minutes, is comparatively lower, starting at $45. On the other hand, a longer journey from New York, NY to Washington, DC, spanning 3 hours and 25 minutes, starts at $80.

How are train rides compared to other modes of travel?

Train rides in the United States offer a unique and comfortable mode of travel when compared to other transportation options. One distinct advantage that sets train journeys apart is the flexibility for passengers, particularly for seniors.

Unlike air travel, where the norm is to arrive at the airport well in advance, train travel allows seniors to board at their convenience. This eliminates the stress associated with the need to arrive at the station hours before departure, a common requirement for air travel. The absence of stringent check-in procedures provides seniors with a more relaxed and hassle-free experience, allowing them to embark on their journey with ease.

Furthermore, the comfort of train rides contributes significantly to their appeal. The spacious and well-designed train cabins offer ample legroom, comfortable seating, and the freedom to move around during the journey.

Unlike cramped airline seats, trains provide a more generous and pleasant travel environment, allowing passengers, especially seniors, to stretch their legs and move about freely. This comfort factor enhances the overall travel experience and makes train rides a preferred choice for those seeking a more relaxed journey.

Moreover, the scenic beauty that unfolds outside the train windows adds an extra dimension to the travel experience. Train routes often traverse picturesque landscapes and charming towns, providing passengers with a visually captivating journey. This scenic aspect distinguishes train travel from the relatively sterile and rapid transit offered by airplanes.

Amtrak offers a 10% discount for folks who are 65 years of age and over

Amtrak, the renowned passenger railroad service in the United States, recognizes and values its older travelers by extending a generous 10% discount to individuals aged 65 and over. This thoughtful initiative not only reflects a commitment to inclusivity but also addresses the financial considerations of a demographic that often lives on fixed incomes.

By offering a discount on most of its trains, Amtrak makes rail travel a more economically feasible option for seniors, rendering it an attractive and affordable alternative.

Wrapping Up the Journey

As we wrap up our virtual journey through some of the best train trips for seniors in the USA, it’s evident that train travel offers more than just transportation. It’s a chance to slow down, appreciate the beauty around us, and relish the journey itself. From the historic charm of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad to the coastal beauty of the Pacific Surfliner, each trip has its unique appeal for seniors.

Train Travel for Seniors

1/17/2023 | By Donna Brody

train trips for single seniors

Veteran train traveler Donna Brody looks at the benefits and basics of train travel for seniors and offers tips for travelers.

Retirees often joke that “every day is Saturday” as they enjoy the freedom from an eight-hour workday and 40-hour work week. Some seniors are anxious to fill that free time with travel. Trips to exotic places with temperate climates, journeys to ancient ruins or majestic mountains, or simple jaunts to an out-of-town craft fair or to visit the grandchildren are all options for active older adults.

Depending on the destination, the time of year, and the traveler’s health, statistics reveal that most seniors will probably choose to journey by plane or automobile.

But, for some, the idea of busy airports jammed with people, strict TSA procedures, the inevitable long waits and the unexpected delays, baggage restrictions, and few meal options lessen the appeal of airline travel.

Even auto travel has drawbacks for older adults: a lengthy time in the car as well as the cost of fuel, meals, and lodging.

There is a third option that some older travelers might not have considered – the train. According to Amtrak , “Passengers over 65 make up 24% of Amtrak riders.” There are a number of unique benefits to train travel that might just make seniors’ vacations more comfortable and memorable.

As a primer, Amtrak is the only long-distance, intercity passenger rail line in the United States. In 1971, the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak’s original corporate name) consolidated 20 different private passenger railroads into a single network. Its first official train ran from New York City to Philadelphia. Today, Amtrak serves more than 500 destinations .

Amtrak trains fall into two categories: long-distance trains and short-distance trains, including Northeast Corridor trains that run between Boston, New York City, and Washington, D.C. There are also some shorter distance train services in Pennsylvania, California, and Illinois. Short-distance routes are designed for day trips between major cities. They don’t have sleeping cars or full dining services, but most do include a business class car with larger seats and non-alcoholic beverage service as well as a “quiet” car where cell phone use and loud talking (above a whisper) are prohibited.

Conversely, long-distance trains involve travel over a period of days through several states and offer options for sleeping.

Benefits of train travel for seniors

happy older woman looking out of a train window. Image by Artanika. Veteran train traveler Donna Brody looks at the benefits and basics of train travel for seniors and offers tips for travelers.

Amtrak travelers 65 years of age and over are eligible to receive a 10% discount on most Amtrak rail fares . On cross-border services (operated jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada), a 10% discount is available to travelers aged 60 and over.

Besides the senior discount (on fares that are otherwise cheaper than most airline flights), there are many other reasons to choose train travel over planes or automobiles.

Room to move

First, train’s coach seats offer more legroom. Passengers can also get up and walk around while the train is moving or take advantage of the lounge cars and café cars. More than just a pleasant advantage, this can help prevent blood clots that can form during long stretches of inactivity. Overnight trains offer dining cars that serve three meals a day, with full menus. Long-distance trains have “smoking” stops built into the schedule at intervals along the route, and even non-smokers can use these opportunities to walk along the platform to stretch their legs and get some fresh air.

Room to snooze

Sleeping accommodations are available on long-distance trains, a top benefit of train travel for seniors. Charges for these rooms can be pricey, but customers can choose among several price points, based on size and amenities: roomettes, bedrooms, bedroom suites, family bedrooms, or handicapped accessible bedrooms.

To avoid the extra cost, some passengers choose to sleep in their coach seats, which recline and include small pillows. Amtrak coaches have outlets near every seat, so passengers can use laptops, charge phones, and watch TV and movies on their own electronic devices. Wi-Fi is available on most long-distance trains, though it is sometimes spotty in remote terrain.

Rooms with a view

By far the most exhilarating thing about a train journey, though, is the ever-changing scenery.

No conversation is necessary as whitewater rapids give way to craggy mountainsides, to enchanted snow forests, to desert cacti. The vistas can be spectacular. Extra-large windows in the Sightseer cars on some routes enhance the view. Even the sight of junk yards and abandoned, boarded-up buildings hint of mysterious backstories.

So, pack your imagination and hop aboard a train for a unique travel experience.

Tips for Amtrak train travel for seniors

  • Temperatures can vary in train cars, so always bring a heavy sweater or sweatshirt to wear as needed, year-round. Long pants and closed-toed shoes are also a good idea rather than flip flops or sandals.
  • Some travelers on trains are looking to socialize with their fellow passengers, especially in the Café, Dining, and Sightseer Lounge cars – others are not. Always respect people’s preferences.
  • If you choose to sit in the quiet car, remember that cell phone use is prohibited and speaking louder than a whisper is frowned upon.
  • Passengers are allowed to bring their own food on the train, but it must be consumed in their seat. Full meals in the Dining car cost more than snacks and sandwiches in the Café car, and if traveling alone or in a twosome, you will be seated with other passengers in the Dining car. Alcohol is served in the Café / Lounge car.
  • Long-distance travelers who don’t pay for sleeping quarters should bring blankets and larger pillows.
  • Each passenger may bring two personal items and two larger bags on board. The luggage racks on the lower level of coach cars fill up fast. There are ample overhead storage racks above the coach seats, but you’ll have to carry your own luggage up a narrow stairway to your seat. Checking large bags at the station might be a better option and is free. Red Caps can provide luggage assistance at larger stations.
  • Keep medications and other necessary items with you.
  • Most trains do not have assigned seats in coach, but groups and families can usually find seats together. Conductors do sometimes assign seat numbers on certain crowded trains. Once your ticket is scanned, you can move about the train, but don’t remove the seat check the conductor placed above your seat, and don’t leave valuables in plain sight.
  • Trains don’t always run on time. Most of Amtrak’s travel is over tracks owned by freight railroads, which have priority. Build some flexibility into your schedule and always pack water and snacks just in case.
  • Amtrak accommodates passengers with accessibility needs, too. Browse the Accessible Travel Services web page for more information.

Perks of traveling single with Intrepid

Travelers toasting on an Intrepid tour in Morocco

Single and keen to mingle?

Our trips can be great for singles over 50 and 60 as we take care of safety, logistics and transport so you can focus your time on the joy of travel. We don’t offer the classic ‘singles-only’ tours, but we do provide the perfect base for people looking to get to know others, usually a varied mix of ages, nationalities, cultures and more. Since our tours are so diverse, this could mean you’re on a trip with couples in their 40s, singles in their 20s, family groups or people traveling on their own in their fifties and beyond. Our tours aren’t specifically designed for making perfect matches, but hey, if it happens, it  happens .

Small numbers, big sites

The best part of traveling in a small group is the friends you can make in the most unlikely of places – we’re talking while hiking the Inca Trail or cooking dhal in  Sri Lanka . It also means a bunch of new faces to share the world’s most epic experiences with and a few people around to watch your back (especially when walking through a traffic crossing in Vietnam ). No matter who you’re sharing your tour with, you’ll be docking at unbelievable sites, meeting local people and getting a one-of-a-kind journey - single or not, we think that's pretty epic.

Safety and logistics

Traveling solo at any age can feel like a big deal, especially when venturing to far-off places. That’s why small group tours are the perfect fit, no matter if you’re traveling alone at 25 or 65. We’ll do the planning, manage the itinerary, handle the transport and keep safety in mind - all so you can immerse yourself to the max. Not to mention, your guide will be able to support you with potential language barriers, give recommendations, show you the best spots for photos and so much more. Don’t just take our word for it, find out for yourself.

Local knowledge and unique perspectives

Maybe you’ve already seen the big sites and now looking for a different experience or new perspective. That’s where we come in. Our tours are led by our Local Leaders, all of whom are experts in their corner of the world and are out there showing it to others right now. Their knowledge of their country’s attractions, delicacies, cultures and communities is something you probably won’t get to experience elsewhere. Find yourself ducking into unknown hotspots and learning more than just the basics when you’re on one of our tours.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid adventures are for travelers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're traveling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m traveling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travelers with another traveler of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travelers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

America by Train – Solo Travel Adventures

Enjoy this post share the love.

train trips for single seniors

America by Train – Solo Travel Adventures:  Summer is fast approaching. With no way to be sure which countries will be open for summer vacations, Americans are largely planning domestic travel for 2021. National and state parks are at the top of everyone’s list with families partial to getting there via road trips.  However, for solo travelers, safety concerns and practical challenges, like changing a tire, can make long drives alone less attractive.

In my college days, I was ready to “See America” overland. Not having a car and with only a student’s budget, I headed out for five weeks alone on an open-ended bus trip with only an overnight bag.  With no plan, I slept on the bus at night and went sightseeing by day wherever the bus ended up at sunrise. I covered 3,000+ miles from Washington, DC to Los Angeles without battling rush hour traffic, searching for legal parking and hearing my GPS shout “recalculating” every time I was lost.

While I am really glad that I had an early start on seeing all fifty states, I would not choose a bus trip now except for short day excursions. The biggest challenges were:

  • Trying to sleep as the bus swayed from side to side
  • Tiring of fast food meals at bus stops
  • Being concerned about safety as a female solo traveler
  • Not having the option to stretch my legs
  • Adjusting to limited bathroom facilities

In addition, in 2021, with the pandemic still an issue, buses do not offer an opportunity for social distancing. As a result, train travel this summer offers the best timely solution to restart US travel. (For information on official recommendations as to COVID-19 healthcare practices, see the CDC.gov .)

America by Train – Solo Travel Adventures:

Why give up the independence of a road trip for a solo train journey?

Europeans have long favored train travel, especially when confronted with their historically high gas prices. However, distances there are shorter, and extensive railroad networks exist in, and between, almost every country of the European Union.

Here are the top advantages of train travel over road trips now:

  • Letting someone else take care of everything. 2020-2021 has been a year of lockdowns and “DYI’s”. We have all run our course from “Be your own barber” to “Do your own home repairs”. Train travel journeys mean someone else has to take care of transportation, meals and daily logistics.
  • For those driving alone, personal security is still an issue. Losing your way at night or having a car breakdown in a remote area can be dangerous.
  • The US national passenger rail service, Amtrak, has both daily service between cities and major coast-to-coast routes .
  • Amtrak is offering “ roomettes ” on select long-haul service providing both privacy and built-in social distancing during the pandemic. Having once luxuriated overnight in a sleeper car from Chicago to Washington, DC, I highly recommend it. The sleeper cars also have access to a private shower and bathroom.  Added amenities include: turndown service, priority boarding, assistance with bags, complimentary meals onboard and in major stations, lounge access.
  • Pricing can be competitive when compared with the costs of driving: high gas prices, parking rates, tolls, overnight lodging, meals and wear and tear on your car or paying car rental costs.

Here are five different ways to explore the US this summer whether you go independently or join a  group via Amtrak Vacations or other providers, such as Vacations by Rail .

Option One: “Gal or Guy Getaways” – Living the High Life for Short-Tern Trips:

train trips for single seniors

If you have cabin fever and are ready for a short, nearby mini-vacation, consider:

  • Taking a New York City Theatre Weekend.
  • Walking Boston’s Freedom Trail.
  • Visiting the Art Institute of Chicago, doing some shopping (or window shopping) along the Magnificent Mile.
  • Enjoying lower summer rates at an Arizona spa.
  • Riding horses at a dude ranch.
  • Strolling along Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco.
  • Joining a vineyards tour and wine tasting in Napa Valley.

America by Train – Solo Travel Adventures: Alternate Routes:

Option Two:  Explore America’s Northernmost Route:

train trips for single seniors

  • Start in New York City or Washington, DC.
  • Head out to Chicago.
  • Have a country stopover at a dairy farm in Wisconsin. On my cross-country trip, I arrived in Racine, just in time to see a new calf born that day.
  • Journey onward through the Badlands with a stop at Rapid City, South Dakota, for a tour of nearby MT Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial . Motorcycle enthusiasts should check out the annual summer Sturgis rally.
  • Continue on to Montana and Glacier National Park.
  • Arrive in Seattle and board an Alaska cruise to take advantage of summer 2021 specials with no single supplement. Top Solo Travel Destination-Alaska | Solo Trekker 4 U

Option Three:  Discover the US via the Middle Route Coast-to-Coast:

Solo travel package Tuscany no single supplement with early booking

This was the route I took in my own US overland tour. I quickly learned that Chicago was only one-third of the way cross-country.  It was easy to see how vast the western states were in contrast to the Eastern seaboard.

These are stops along the way I recommend:

  • As noted above, Chicago can’t be missed.
  • Saint Louis with 3 million residents has much to see starting with the Arch. If you are claustrophobic, you may opt instead for the Mississippi River Boat Tour.
  • Denver was one of the highlights of my journey westward albeit having arrived at dawn. I took a self-guided tour of the state capitol as the cleaning crew started a new day.  In ski season, Denver is also a connection point for trains to Winter Park .
  • Rivaling my visit to Denver was my stop in Salt Lake. Surrounded by vast mountains, it has a unique history in the American West and is well worth an overnight stop. To swim in the Salt Lake, there are easy day tours from downtown.
  • Ending in San Francisco, I was thrilled at my first glimpse of the Golden Gate Bridge  followed by a  a stroll down the “the crookedest street in the world” and jumping off and on trolley cars.

Option 4:  Discover America on the Southern Route:

Solo Travel Destinations-American South

A few of the highlights en route to Los Angeles include:

  • New Orleans which is much more than the site for Mardi Gras. Filled with America’s early history from the Louisiana Purchase to the War of 1812, both the French Quarter and the Garden District have architecture not seen elsewhere in the US. While the city is known for jazz and world-class cuisine, it also offers outdoor adventures from ghost tours to bayou expeditions gliding along among the alligators.
  • San Antonio is rich with history from the Alamo and still intact early Spanish missions. The 15 mile San Antonio River Walk is a big tourist draw as the country’s largest urban ecosystem.  (See the city’s official tourist site for “Local Adventures”/” Girls Getawa y”?!)
  • Santa Fe is known for its colonial architecture, i.e ., the Basilica Church of St. Francis Assisi, and  lively local art, led by the Georgia O’Keefe Museum.  In addition, Santa Fe has five national parks  making it possible to combine a cultural and historic tour with a more active hiking vacation.

America by Train – Solo Travel Adventures: An Active Vacation:

Option Five:  National Parks:

train trips for single seniors

For hiking, wildlife sightings and in some cases, white water rafting, the national and state parks are hard to beat. In addition, prices are low, and camping is often available/ Most are accessible through a combination of rail and private tours.

Here is our list of those not to miss:

Utah:  Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, Zion

Wyoming/Montana: Yellowstone

California: Yosemite

Arizona/Nevada: Grand Canyon

Montana: Glacier National Park

  • If you are retired and can travel whenever you want, it's a smart idea to aim for the shoulder season of April to mid-June or September and October. You'll avoid the crowds and the heat of the summer.
  • Many Canada train tours for seniors include excursions that are accessible to travellers who use mobility aids.

PACE providers receive monthly Medicare and Medicaid capitation payments for each enrollee. Medicare enrollees who are not eligible for Medicaid pay monthly premiums equal to the Medicaid capitation amount, but no deductibles, coinsurance, or any other type of Medicare or Medicaid cost-sharing.

The Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) benefits include, but are not limited to, all Medicaid and Medicare covered services, including transportation. PACE also includes all other services determined necessary by the health professionals team to improve and maintain an individual’s health.

PACE programs provide services primarily in an adult day health center and are supplemented by in-home and referral services in accordance with the enrollee’s needs.

Angel Flight West – Free Medical Transportation

A small child, ravaged by cancer, needs specialized lifesaving treatment at a hospital 300 miles away. A father, separated from his family by a hurricane, wants desperately to be reunited.

train trips for single seniors

A domestic-violence survivor longs to start a new life in another city, but cannot afford to leave. These are just a few of the people to whom we offer help and hope.

There’s an angel in the cockpit. The ability to travel easily across the country is something that most of us take for granted. But for those whose lives are in turmoil, the financial, physical, and emotional burdens can make ordinary trips extraordinarily difficult. That’s when they turn to Angel Flight West. Our network of 1,400+ volunteer pilots fly their own planes and pay for all costs out of their own pockets, in order to make these critical journeys.

At our headquarters in Santa Monica, California, our ground team manages the complex system of matching pilots with passengers, coordinating the flights, spreading the word among referral agencies, and continually recruiting new volunteers.

What we do is much like running a small airline, further complicated by the extra care and expense of working with passengers who need our help, their families, as well as medical and hospital personnel. The beneficiaries of the flight – the passengers and their families, the healthcare organizations – pay nothing at all, ever.

  • Service Area: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming
  • Transportation Services Provided: Medical Appointments.
  • Request must be verified by a medical provider involved in the passenger’s care (social worker, nurse, doctor, etc.)We will need a medical provider involved in the passenger’s care to fill out brief paperwork that we send directly to him or her.
  • Medically stableWe will need to have a physician verify that the passenger is medically stable and able to fly commercially.
  • Geographic criteria AFW provides air transportation within the 13 Western states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. Passengers will be referred to other organisations if the transportation would involve travel outside this service area. Note: We may be able to provide commercial air transportation if the flight originates in our territory but terminates outside of our territory if the destination is the only place a patient can receive potentially life saving treatment.
  • Reason for travel AFW primarily provides air transportation for patients travelling to and from scheduled medical treatment. We also arrange “compassion” flights for individuals who need to visit or be a caregiver for a critically ill family member. Additionally, we will arrange flights to relocate victims of domestic violence, to transport children and adults to camps for a variety of special needs (such as burn survivors and families impacted by HIV or AIDS), and to fly support staff and supplies during natural disasters or other crises. “Compassion” requests are accepted on a case-by-case basis.
  • Financial or compelling needAFW is a charitable service and Alaska Airlines is a generous donor, providing hundreds of tickets to help patients get to necessary treatment. We recognise that the costs of medical care, lost wages, and providing care can deplete a family’s resources. Passengers do not need to be desperate or destitute to qualify, we simply want to make the best use of our limited resources.
  • 2 business days’ advance noticeWe generally require 2 business days’ advance notice to review the paperwork and book a flight. In some cases, we can accommodate shorter term requests.
  • Apply Online: Angel Flight West – Request a Flight
  • or Please Contact: 888-4-AN-ANGEL (888-426-2643)
  • 1 Because of the limited resources of our volunteer pilots, the distance traveled can be no more than 1,000 miles in each direction.
  • 2 There is never a charge of any kind for an Angel Flight.
  • 3 Your flight will be scheduled to accommodate your medical appointment.
  • 4 Your pilot will pick you up at an airport near your home and bring you to your treatment facility.
  • 5 Your flight is just for you, and will typically be in a small private plane.
  • 6 This means that we can pick you up at an airport near your home, even if you live in a rural area.
  • 7 After your appointment, another pilot will pick you up and bring you home.
  • 8 You can bring companions to travel with you.
  • 9 You can travel with Angel Flight on as many trips as you need.

Miracle Flights – Free Flights

Since 1985, we’ve provided more than 127,000 free flights to those in need of life-changing medical care not available in their local communities.

train trips for single seniors

Almost all Miracle Flights patients suffer from medical conditions treated by only a handful of experts located across the country, which makes medical travel a necessity. While insurance may cover actual treatment, it rarely covers the cost of travel.

As a result, many patients go untreated or misdiagnosed, simply because they can’t get to the medical experts who can effectively treat their condition. That’s where Miracle Flights comes in. We alleviate the financial burden of travel so families can focus on treatment and recovery.

We fly everywhere, every time. Our team provides commercial plane tickets to all U.S.-based medical treatment facilities at no cost to families. Thanks to the generous support of our donors, we’re able to fly patients as many times as needed. We’ve been flying some for more than 18 years.

We fly everyone, of every age. We help treat all diseases for patients of every age. Simply put, we’ll fly anyone with a complex medical need who requires distant medical care. We believe in the healing power of family.

We’ll pay to fly both parents or legal guardians of patients under 18. We’ll pay to fly a caregiver or companion for adult patients.

  • Service Area: United States.
  • Is the patient medically cleared to safely travel on a commercial plane?
  • Do you have a confirmed medical appointment requiring air travel? Your treatment site will need to verify your medical appointment date.
  • Is your requested departure date at least 14 days away from today’s date?
  • Based on your household size, does your family’s gross income fall at or below our established financial thresholds (must be verifiable using IRS tax documentation)? Our financial thresholds are based on household size and are generally three times the listed annual Federal Poverty Guidelines listed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Application Details: TO SIGN UP/SCHEDULE FOR RIDES:
  • Online Flight Request Application
  • or Please Contact: 800-359-1711
  • 1 Miracle Flights provides free commercial airline tickets to those in need of life-changing medical care far from home.
  • 2 Our programming services are available to children and adults! Miracle Flights will provide free commercial flights for anyone that needs medical care far from home, regardless of their age.
  • 3 Miracle Flights will provide up to two round trip flights each month for eligible patients and family members for as long as it takes. Some families have received dozens of flights from us over the course of many years.
  • 4 We ask that you submit a new online flight request application for each requested medical travel journey.
  • 5 We ask that all flight request applications be submitted at least 14 days before your requested departure date. This allows us optimal time to search and coordinate the most accommodating flight for you at the most economical price for our organization.
  • 6 “For a Child Patient – Miracle Flights will provide flights to a qualifying child patient (age 17 and under at the time of medical appointment) and up to two adult parents/legal guardians/family members (up to 3 total passengers). For an Adult Patient – Miracle Flights will provide flights for an adult patient (age 18 and over) and one spouse/caregiver/family member (up to 2 total passengers) if it is medically necessary for the patient to travel with a chaperone.”
  • 7 We’ll provide flights to anywhere in the United States, as long as your treatment site verifies your medical appoint date. In cities with multiple airports, we’ll generally provide flights to the airport that is best for you and your family as long as it’s economically feasible for our organization.
  • 8 Passengers are responsible for all baggage fees and add-on fees as set forth by the airline they are traveling. Please visit your airline’s website for the latest details and processes.
