You must be over 20 years old, have a passport with a valid visa and a valid driving license from your country of origin or an international driving license. .

Vehicles do come with third part insurance covering only the third part, the vehicle damage and their accessories are not covered. Upgrading to Comprehensive is possible at an extra fee.

A security deposit of USD 1000 is required and must be paid together with the rental price by credit card.

In Tanzania and Kenya we drive on the left side of the road. The speed limit inside the national parks is 50KPH, and tar roads are 80KPH, unless there is a sign pointing otherwise. Consult us for some tips and suggestions.

Our cars do not have a mileage limit per day, an added benefit for you.

Tanzania and Kenya is consdered very safe for doing self drive safari. Self Drive activities in Parks in Tanzania and Kenya are allowed and include overnight stays in public or special camps. We recommend booking and paying the fees in advance. To understand more about the rules, our expert team is ready to help you.

We are proud to be open 7 days a week, 365 days a year! Most of our first contacts with clients are made through a client completing an enquiry form on the vehicle that they are interested in. We will then issue a quote if the vehicle is available.

Yes, like any other tropical Country, Tanzania also hosts many bugs, insects and mosquitoes. To safeguard our clients from these unfriendly hosts all hotels and tented camp rooms are sprayed with insect repellents. It is advisable to carry insect repellents along with you while travelling to Tanzania.

The most attractive activity in Tanzania is the Great Wildebeest Migration which is an annual migration of giant herds of grazers across Northern Tanzania and Kenya.

On an average over two million wildebeests, zebras and gazelles move through the Serengeti and Masai Mara networks in search food and water.

This Great Migration in Tanzania can be witnessed all year round as the wildlife migrates in a circular motion around the Serengeti National Park.

Casual clothing is expected in Tanzania so you do not need to pack any extravagant clothes. Loose-fitting and lightweight clothes are the best choices in Tanzanian safari that they keep you cool and even dry quickly in case you get caught in a rain shower. Carry a good fleece or jacket for warding off the chilly cold mornings of game drive activities. You can wear long sleeves at night as there will usually be a campfire to keep you warm but you will need to protect yourself from mosquitoes.

SAFARI – Landcruiser with pop up roof

Your safari classic: the Landcruiser Hardtop with pop-up roof. No wildlife remains unnoticed from this viewpoint. This vehicle has six window seats. When camping, we take out the last row, and the car can accommodate 4 persons with camp gear and luggage.

Manual, Diesel, 2x 80 Litre2 spare tires. Fuel consumption is around 7 km/liter. Note it has no A/C.

Possible to rent with electrical fridge and rooftop tent. When equipped with a rooftop tent, it’s NOT possible to use the pop up roof.

BUDGET – Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 is a sporty, compact and robust 4WD. The car is also easy and economical to drive, giving you the best value for money. It’s automatic, in permanent four-wheel drive. NO A/C.

Fuel consumption is very low compared to other 4×4 models: around 10-12 km/liter. Petrol costs between $1 – $1.20. The RAV4 can fit up to four people, or two people with camping gear. The RAV cannot be equipped with a rooftop tent or fridge, but you can hire a ground tent. This car is NOT ALLOWED for travels to the Serengeti, Lake Natron and Selous Game Reserve. For these rough roads, the Landcruiser is required.

Tanzania is a great country for camping as there are so many campsites, ranging from basic bush sites inside the national parks to private campsites that come with a restaurant and swimming pool.

We can equip the Landcruiser with a rooftop tent and/or electrical fridge, or you can hire a dome tent. Both options come with fully equipped quality camping gear, including sleeping bags, headlights, cooking equipment, table, chairs and everything else you’ll need on your camping tour of Tanzania.

Rent a car with driver

All of our drivers are experienced, helpful and most of all pleasant company. He will also do the game drives in the parks. The cost of hiring a driver is $45 / day – this also covers his meals and accommodation. You don’t need to arrange accomodation for him, as the lodges have facilities for the driver-guides. When you travel into a national park with a driver, you will also have to pay their entrance fee of $3 to 4 / day, depending on the park.

The driver is responsible for the wellbeing of the car, and the security bond will no longer apply.

The Northern Tanzania region is headlined by the Serengeti, the mother of all safari areas, home to a vast wildebeest and zebra migration and other prodigious wildlife viewing. The region also contains cluster of further reserves including the volcanoes of Ngorongoro, the Rift Valley lakes of Manyara, Eyasi and Natron, as well as the more subtle landscapes of Tarangire.Because these reserves are so closely clustered together, the area has traditionally been visited by traveling overland from one to the next, with a private vehicle and driver-guide, which really does give you the freedom to explore and provides a uniquely engaging style of safari.

How we like to include Tanzania North in trips

Tanzania North is an absolutely magnificent safari area, a place which we adore. It is one of those few areas which we could easily recommend it to virtually everyone, it is simply somewhere that you have to visit at some stage in your safari career.

But getting a trip right can be a very complicated business. Despite the magnificence of the region, a remarkably high proportion of visitors end up having a relatively poor quality safari experience, simply flogging up and down the main road regardless of the seasonal.

Traffic is the main potential negative. For most of the year 10% of the land area hosts over 90% of the visitor traffic and significant and distasteful vehicle clustering does occur. But if you divert just a few kilometers off this main drag, then you really can find yourself out on your own.

There is also a very wide range of accommodation in the area and choosing exactly the right mix of lodges and camps will be crucial to ensuring the quality, breadth and authenticity of your safari.

The region is best known for its authentic seasonal tented mobile camps, which are completely removed from the parks during the low seasons. We strongly recommend that you include at least one of these, even if you are not usually the camping type.

Recommended Destinations

We divide Tanzania North into a total of eight sub-areas, each of which have their own very different character and safari seasonality. Most guests combine one, two or three of these areas into their safari …

Serengeti  is the mother of all parks, the undoubted highlight of this region. It is an extremely seasonal reserve and safari planning can be quite complicated. We sub-divide the reserve into a further eight areas, of which Serengeti Mara is the place to be for migration viewing and river crossings during the Jul/Oct dry season and Serengeti Southwest is one of the major centers for migration action during the calving season Dec/Apr.

Ngorongoro is a range of mountains which straddles the Rift Valley escarpment. An overland safari through this area inherently needs to travel up and over these mountains, he great highlight of which is the famous Ngorongoro Crater.

The Ngorongoro Karatu area on the south-east side contains some wonderful farmhouse lodges, whilst the remote highland areas of Ngorongoro South and Ngorongoro North offer some superb options for hiking and trekking with Maasai.

Tarangire  is the most southerly of the cluster of parks in this region, a substantial slice of wilderness which can be busy in the north end, but very quiet in the south. The park experiences a major clustering of wildlife during the Jun/Nov dry season, notably enormous numbers of elephants. There are some great little camps, some of which notably feature quality walking safari and night vehicle safari.

Going to zanzibar start of September, so far have booked 2 nights 3 days in sepous impala camp in the nyerere reserve, am staring to question wether to change that to one night and do another 1 night 2 day safari in tarangire and ngorongoro.

Im just overthinking on not seeing everything in selous and the animals are apparently more elusive there but i like the idea of the boat safari and having the spotting animals to your self instead of 10 other jeeps. Main thing we want to see is male lions and elephants then everything else is a bonus

I think you'd be best off asking this on the Tanzania forum.

However, these are my thoughts.

In Selous, with only 2 nights, there is a chance you might not see lions in that time.

As an alternative, you could forget Selous and fly from Zanzibar to the Serengeti, but for 2 nights these would be very expensive internal flights . ZNZ to Seronera is about $500 each way.

With the amount of time you have, unless you have a big budget, I'd say Selous is your best bet.

Why flying to Zanzibar? And how many days will you stay there?

the Op said he was flying to Tanzania to do as he said in the second paragraph.

while I have not gone, ,my brother and family did and found it a highlight to do the boat ride.

Mini, this doesn't answer my question. I'm asking the OP, why he flies to Zanzibar, as he want to visit the Nationalparks on the mainland Tanzania.

And I asked, how many days the OP has, because that would determine my recommendations.

Charging elephant kills 79-year-old American tourist on Zambian safari

A n 79-year-old American tourist was killed during a national park safari in Zambia after a bull elephant charged the vehicle carrying six tourists and a tour guide on Saturday.

The elephant attacked the car as it travelled through Kafue National Park in western Zambia, the tour operation company Wilderness told NBC News in a statement.

In shocking video from the incident, recorded by someone inside the safari vehicle, the large elephant can first be seen running at a distance behind a tree line. As the elephant continues its speedy approach, many of the tourists can be heard uttering "Uh-oh," and "It's coming fast."

There's several seconds of chase until the safari car comes to a slow stop. According to Wilderness' CEO Keith Vincent, this is because the tour guide's route became blocked by vegetation and tough terrain and he, as a result, "could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough."

The passengers in the safari car can be heard shouting as the elephant approaches the vehicle's left side. Using its large tusks, the bull elephant flips the car, seemingly toppling its occupants out onto the dry grass.

The 79-year-old American traveller died after the incident, though no further information about the death has been released.

The safari company said another woman was also injured and was taken to a medical facility in South Africa. Four others were treated for minor injuries as a result of the elephant attack.

It is unclear why the elephant became so aggressive. The incident is currently being investigated by local police and the department of national parks and wildlife.

Vincent described the tour guide, and all tour guides at the company, as "extremely well trained and experienced."

“This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died,” Vincent said. "We are also, naturally, supporting those guests and the guide involved in this distressing incident."

The 79-year-old woman's body will be repatriated to the U.S. with support from Zambian authorities and the U.S. Embassy in Lusaka, Zambia's capital city.

Wilderness operates safari tours in eight African countries: Botswana, Kenya, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The elephant attack comes at a time when some African countries have expressed concern over the increasing number of elephants in certain regions. On Wednesday, Botswana's president Mokgweetsi Masisi called the country's increasing elephant population (which has grown to some 130,000) a “ plague ."

Amid a tense dispute about conservation between Masisi and German officials, Masisi threatened to send 20,000 elephants to Germany. The threat came as officials in Berlin have eyed restrictions on hunting trophies, like ivory tusks.

Masisi said herds of wild elephants have been causing issues in Botswana, damaging property, devouring crops and even trampling citizens.
