BSI Bus Terminal in Reykjavik

Bus Stop In Iceland

T his blog is usually related to touristic information on what to visit in Iceland and when. And although we said it a thousand times (yes, we sound like a broken record by now) renting a car in Iceland is the best way to get around the island. However, it is now the right time to provide an alternative to those who simply cannot drive. Today, we will introduce Reykjavík’s main bus station, welcome to our guide of the BSI Bus Terminal.

Bsi Bus Terminal In Reykjavik

Traveling through Iceland by bus

Traveling by bus is not a common option among the tourists that visit Iceland. Public transport in Iceland is not as developed as in other European countries, and this can be a challenge for travelers who rely on it to explore the country. While there are buses that connect the major cities and towns, they can be infrequent, especially in remote areas. As a result, many travelers opt either for their own car rental in Iceland or for private transfers , which offer a more flexible and reliable way to get around.

Private transfers can take many forms, from taxi services and private cars to organized tours and airport transfers . However, they are often more expensive than public transport, and that’s not an option for those who are looking for something that won’t break the bank.

As we mentioned before, the public transport network outside the capital is not very developed. Schedules are more limited, and so is the number of companies that provide bus services and routes. Even so, there are always destinations that are easily accessible by bus. And it must be noted that not everyone can drive their own car, right?

Today we are not going to focus on urban transport in Iceland, but rather those that would take us outside the Icelandic capital itself.

BSÍ Bus Terminal

All trips start and end at one site. This is usually the BSÍ Bus Terminal. The station is located in downtown Reykjavik , Iceland’s main city. At Vatnsmyrarvegur St #10. This makes it an idyllic place for all those who want to go on an Icelandic adventure.

The station itself is not very big, so don’t be afraid of getting lost. You will see a white building with two floors. On the ground floor, you have the main hall, there’s a waiting area with several seats at your disposal. In front of them and to the side, you have the ticket box and the arrival and departure gates.

What bus companies operate at the Reykjavík bus station?

The two main companies operating at this station are Flybus and Reykjavík Excursions.

The Flybus Airport shuttle offers its services between the Icelandic capital and the international airport. So, for many, their stop at the BSÍ Bus Terminal will be their first contact with Reykjavík. The journey takes about 40 to 50 minutes. Once you arrive at the bus station, you can walk directly to the city center.

Icelandic Bus System Under The Northern Lights

Currently, the price for an adult, a one-way ticket from Keflavik airport to BSÍ Bus Terminal, or vice versa is 3,499 ISK or about USD 25. You can buy the ticket physically but you also do it on their website . It is advisable to check the current schedules since due to the exceptional circumstances that we are currently going through, these may vary.

Reykjavík Excursions:

This company has been one of the largest Icelandic tour operators since the mid-1960s. They have various routes that will take you throughout Iceland, as well as specialized tours to the best-known sites such as the Golden Circle, the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, or the Blue Lagoon. You can also book with them through their website .

What services does BSÍ Bus Terminal have?

Although this terminal not as huge as other stations in different European capitals, the BSÍ Bus Terminal is perfectly equipped. From staffed ticketing counters to automated machines for faster booking if desired.

It also has a tourist information center where they can help you with your itinerary , places to visit, day trips. They even make reservations for tours and accommodations. In this way, you can create your own route and have everything reserved in a simple way.

Where to eat at BSI Bus Terminal?

It has happened to all of us at some point. We come from a long journey on an empty stomach and we need to eat immediately. Or we start a trip, and to get to the station on time, we leave the hotel or house without eating. Whatever your case is, know that you have a place to eat well at the Reykjavik bus station.

Bus Stop In Iceland

Fljótt og Gott at BSI Bus Terminal

Fljótt og Gott at BSÍ has changed the name of the place to Mýrin Mathús. The place has undergone radical renovations recently. It is still an easy to find place, right inside the station itself. We recommend it because it has a good selection of food, much of it fast food, but also some more traditional Icelandic options . Not for nothing is it one of the oldest restaurants in the country. And although they have been renovated, it is still run by the same people, so you can continue to enjoy the delicacies and flavor of this restaurant.

Among its specialties is the Svið, which is the half-boiled severed sheep’s head. The brains are removed, the hair is removed and it is served with mashed turnips or potatoes. It is a well-known dish during Þorrablót, a festival that marks the beginning of winter. Now, you can enjoy this particular dish at Mýrin Mathús.

They have fast, friendly, and very good service. It is aimed at families so it is a good stop to eat or drink something there. Or also to take it with you on your bus trip in Iceland.

Vending machines

This option is perfect for those who are not really very hungry and just want to have a snack or grab a bottle of water or soda. You have several at your disposal scattered around the terminal.

Bus Services In Iceland

BSI bus terminal

You already know how to locate the terminal and what to expect from this bus station. We recommend that you always check the arrival and departure times of the buses since, with the current situation, many have changed or are constantly changing. If you cannot drive either due to age or because you do not have a driver’s license, do not hesitate to check this option. Iceland is available to everyone in different ways, you just have to know how to find them. We will welcome you, arms wide open!

Inside BSI bus terminal

BSI Bus Terminal: More Than a Transport Hub

Nestled a mere kilometer from the city center, the terminal's white facade, marked by a bold red BSI logo, stands proudly. From here, most journeys begin, whether you’re venturing to the enchanting Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, exploring the famed Golden Circle, or meandering through the jagged landscapes of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.

The name of the BSI Bus Terminal can be intriguing to many. Though it might seem like an abbreviation for ‘Bus Station Iceland’, its full Icelandic name, "Bifreiðastöð Íslands", means ‘automobile depot Iceland’.

This is a subtle reference to its initial days as a taxi station. The terminal has seen many trends come and go, such as locals once gathering here to enjoy the unusual combination of kjammi and kók – half a boiled sheep’s head with a soft drink coke. Although the popular Myrin Mathús, known for serving this dish, is no longer in operation, the terminal remains a significant part of Reykjavík's diverse history.

Regardless of the chosen option, all paths lead to BSI, making it an essential stopover for everyone arriving in Reykjavík.

Reykjavík bus stops

Pick Up Locations in Reykjavík

We're thrilled you're considering a tour with us. Let's walk through the pickup process to make your experience as seamless as possible.

Reykjavík Pickup / Drop-off Location Map

Dive into our Google Map and spot the 15 highlighted tour bus stops with the distinct, larger bus icons. While you're there, you might notice smaller red bus icons - these represent public transport stops, included by Google for added reference.

In addition to the 15 designated Tour Bus Stops, you’ll find the Direct Doorstep Pickups, marked with stars.

Read on to understand the difference between the different types of bus stops.

Meeting Us for Your Adventure

Day tours from reykjavík.

When you decide to join us on a tour, you'll have the opportunity to meet us at the tour's departure point in central Reykjavík or take advantage of our convenient pickup service for a small additional charge.

Our day tours that depart from Reykjavík kick off from a well-connected public transport hub called “ BSI Bus Terminal ”, a short distance from the city center.

You have several options for getting to BSI. Walking from downtown will take you between 10 and 20 minutes. If you prefer, public transport or HOPP electric scooters are available, especially fun in the summer. However, walking is often be the most predictable choice, as it frees you from any concerns about traffic delays, bus schedules or scooter availability.

Just remember to arrive at BSI at least 15 minutes before your tour is set to begin.

BSI Bus Terminal Reykjavík

Understanding Our Pickup Service and Locations

For many of our day tours, we offer a pickup service in Reykjavík for a small fee. However, this service doesn't autumatically mean pickup right at your doorstep.

Due to Reykjavik's bustling tourism, there are policies restricting tour buses from accessing certain streets and areas. As a result, the city has established specific pickup points for tour buses. These pickup points are strategically positioned close to downtown accommodations, ensuring you have only a brief walk (under 10 minutes) to commence your journey.

And if you're located slightly away from the downtown's core, some hotels might permit us to greet you right at their entrance (more about this option in the “Direct Doorstep Pickups” section)

If by chance your accommodation isn't assigned to one of the Tour Bus Stops or doesn’t have a Direct Doorstep Pickup, just find the nearest one to you on the map, and select this pickup point in the booking process, and we'll meet you there.

Pick-up and Drop-off bus in Reykjavík

Know the Difference: Tour Bus Stops vs. Public Transport Stops

In Reykjavik, you'll notice two kinds of bus stops: our Tour Bus Stops and the ones for local transport. Make sure to keep an eye out for the right sign so you know you're in the correct spot.

The first sign (blue-yellow) is for the traditional public transfport bus stops. You'll need to look for the second sign (blue-pink) for tour bus stops:

Direct Doorstep Pickups/Drop-Offs

In addition to the 15 primary Tour Bus Stops in the city center, there are special pickup points outside of the downtown area. We marked these with stars on our map .

These are hotels where our buses can pull right up to the front of the building for direct pickups/drop-offs (so there are no special bus stops signs here). Lucky you if you're staying at one of these hotels!

If you're staying anywhere near a hotel with this privilege, simply select that hotel from our pickup list and wait outside. Just remember, there's no need to enter or linger in the lobby since you're not a guest of that hotel.

Selecting Your Pickup Point

When booking, after you click "Book Now", a new booking window will open. Here, you'll see a breakdown of the tour(s) you've selected, their prices, and optional add-ons, such as a pickup service.

You have the option to select “I’ll meet you at the meeting point,” which indicates the location for the tour departure. If you choose this, the meeting point details will appear right below this option.

If you prefer to use the pickup service, you need to select a pickup location from the provided list. Many hotel names are accompanied by a bus stop number, indicating the nearest Tour Bus Stops. Those without a bus stop number are Direct Doorstep Pickups.

Before finalizing your booking, kindly double-check your pickup location and accommodation on the map to ensure a seamless journey.

Should you need to change your pickup location, give us a quick ring at least 2 hours before your tour (+354 580 5400), and we'll make the necessary adjustments.

Don't Miss the Bus: Why Pickup Time and Departure Time Are Different

Just a friendly reminder: Pickup time and departure time aren't the same! While departure time marks when our bus sets off on its adventure with everyone on board, your pickup time is always set 30 minutes earlier.

This gives our bus ample time to gather all our wonderful guests from around the city. To ensure you're all set for the journey, please arrive at your pickup spot 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time that is stated on your ticket. Even if you chose a Direct Doorstep Pickup, you must be ready outside of the hotel and visible to the driver 30 minutes before the departure time.

Your bus could arrive anytime within that 30-minutes window, so a touch of patience will ensure you're right on track for the adventure ahead. If your pick-up hasn't arrived in the first 20-25 minutes, please do not hesitate to call us at +354 580 5400.

66 Degrees of Sound: Artist Spotlight — BSÍ

After a much longer break than anticipated, we are very pleased to announce the comeback of our new music and events podcast 66 Degrees of Sound !

66 Degrees of Sound is a show about the newest music being released in Iceland and the hottest events happening in Reykjavík. Kicking off a whole new chapter for the show, hosts Jóhannes Bjarkason and Rex Beckett are back behind the microphones to bring you not one, not two, but THREE episodes each week from now on! The show has already been re-tooled twice already so it’s time to put the “third time’s the charm” theory through its paces.

Each week — from today onwards — 66 Degrees of Sound will release an Artist Spotlight episode on Tuesdays , Events & News on Thursdays  and a sweet Saturday Morning Mix to keep you pumped through the weekend. The show also has a brand-spanking new intro song, yay!

The first episode of this new format begins with lo-fi indie-punk darlings BSÍ in the hot seat — or rather one-half of them — drummer and singer Sigurlaug (Silla) Thorarensen. The duo have just dropped their first single in nearly two years called “Lily (hot dog)” (released April 1) along with a wonderful, star-studded music video that we just can’t get enough of.

Silla joined us in Grapevine HQ’s brand new podcasting studio for a riveting and lively chat about the song, the video, the band’s plans, and general silliness.

You can find 66 Degrees of Sound on Apple Podcasts and Spotify . Smash that follow button to get notified of new episode drops.
