• Best hostel for solo travelers in Bangkok: The Yard . This isn’t a party hostel – it’s away from the chaos, located in a clean, modern neighbourhood. Clean beds/bathrooms, welcoming staff, modern facilities… a home away from home. Free delicious breakfast daily. Book ahead to reserve your bunk (or room)!
• The Banglamphu area is aimed towards backpackers and budget travelers.
• Silom is the place to go for the metropolitan experience (modern hotels, night clubs and malls).

GETTING AROUND

• The business district has a well developed subway and skytrain network with fares starting at 15 THB (it does not cover the old city or Banglamphu, however). The train network is complemented by shuttle boats (servicing the Chao Phraya river and most of the small canals).
• Bangkok’s bus network is extensive – a fare of 2 THB gets you anywhere within city limits.
• For metered taxi services, look for pink cars. The infamous tuk-tuks are also available everywhere. Ensure that the meter is running (or negotiate the price in advance).
• Renting a car and driving on your own is not recommended – traffic in Bangkok is chaotic.

BANGKOK NIGHTLIFE

• Drinking age is  20  (rarely enforced), last call is  never  (the party goes on past sunrise).

• Little India  is another great walk, though somewhat out of the way. The easiest way to get there is by shuttle boat on the Chao Phraya river.

Bangkok is the heart of Southeast Asia. This vibrant city in Thailand attracts many travellers. Some come here to see the historical and spiritual sites, of which the city ha s many, some want to learn more about Thai culture, and others come to find themselves in Thailand.

Whatever your reason for travelling to Thailand, if you're planning to solo travel in Bangkok, I share my recommendations of what to see and do in Bangkok solo. Click on the map to see their location in Bangkok.

As a Bangkok solo female traveller, you may feel overwhelmed when you arrive in the city for the first time. It's humid and noisy and trying to take a tuk-tuk may feel too much. The city is large and can be a bit challenging to navigate so you could find yourself feeling isolated if you stay in an area without other tourists.

But if you're looking to be completely alone, then you may prefer to stay in a comfortable hotel with a rooftop pool in the city and take day tours to see the temples and sights. If you're backpacking Thailand, one big tip for travelling to Bangkok alone is to head to Khao San Road. It's backpacker central, and you'll find tour companies and hostels here. The Grand Palace is, well, grand. But it’s really more than that, and it’s one of the tourist spots in Bangkok that you absolutely should not miss.

As it’s not the official residence of the royal family, the Grand Palace is open to tourists and provides people with a look at the stunning architecture, artefacts, and art that is housed here. Just remember to plan ahead: wear clothing that covers your legs and arrive as early as possible to avoid the crowds. 2. See Wat Phra Kaew

Wat Phra Kaew, known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, is located right next to the Grand Palace and is worth taking the time to explore. This is the royal family’s private chapel, and as such, you’re going to be expected to show a massive amount of respect. This means legs and shoulders are covered, as well as no photography inside the main temple.

But the complex houses more than just the temple. 3. Find Peace at Wat Pho

Wat Pho, or the Temple of the Reclining Buddha to tourists, is a massive temple complex that houses this famous statue as well as a variety of interesting architectural and sacred spaces. Most people just saunter through to see the Reclining Buddha statue but don’t make that mistake. 4. Shop at Chatuchak Weekend Market

If you’re lucky enough to be in Bangkok at the weekend, make sure to set aside time to head to the Chatuchak Weekend Market. This is one of the largest markets in Asia, housing over 15,000 different vendors, and you can find anything you could ever want or need here. Seriously, everything you ever want is here, from clothes and jewellery to souvenirs and even electronics.

5. Mingle With Others at Khao San Road

Khao San Road isn’t for everyone, particularly people who just want to relax, but it is worth mentioning. This is considered the nightlife market for ex-pats and tourists and is literally a road in Bangkok that can service your every need, from repairing your travel gear to giving you great street food at affordable prices. Get a Thai massage or just sit at a cafe or bar to meet others. 

6. Window Shop at Siam Paragon Mall

During your Bangkok solo travel, if you want to do some luxury shopping, Siam Paragon Mall is just the place with six stories of every type of shop imaginable. And even if you’re not in the mood for shopping, you can also visit the mall’s aquarium. Yes, this mall has an aquarium.

7. Find Solitude at Lumphini Park

When you’re ready to collect your thoughts, or you just want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, walk over to Lumphini Park. This is the city’s biggest park, and it’s found right in the heart of the city. Go for a walk, lounge on the green or take a boat ride on the water and feel all your worries just disappear for a little while.

8. Experience Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

If you've never been to a floating market, the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is a good introduction. It is one of the most popular markets in Thailand and you'll be floating past both tourists and Thais as you admire colourful garments and all types of exotic fruit and vegetables. It only operates in the morning, so make sure you get up early not to miss it. Why Bangkok Is An Ideal City For A First Time Solo Traveller

Planning a solo trip to Bangkok? Let me tell you what…. you are doing the right thing.

I stayed in Thailand for more than two weeks, travelling from north to south, and was a whirlwind experience. While I enjoyed most of its cities and towns and islands, nothing can compare my love for travelling in Bangkok. And I only imagine there will be more tributes to the city, especially when I will be back in India and have the chance to reminisce and write more.

I encourage everyone to try a solo trip to Bangkok, particularly those who’re new to solo travelling. And it shouldn’t require much persuasion, after all, the city has been titled as one of the world’s best places to travel in the southeast Asia, for many years in a row, and there is a reason for it.

In fact, there are many reasons.

Before we go ahead with the article, let me share my 3 days Bangkok itinerary and cost of travelling in Thailand guide. These two travel blogs can set you in the right mood. Now, let’s move forward…

Solo Trip to Bangkok

From world-class food to nature parks to party places, this city leads in everything. Though some people complain that the city is too noisy, I think my Indian dispositions helped me blend in fairly easily. In only a few hours after I landed there, someone offered me a lift and drop me at my Bangkok hostel because I happened to ask him the directions. And that is how easy it is to work things out here.

From budget backpackers to honeymooners, this place has something for everyone! And speaking of a solo trip to Bangkok, well that may just be a great idea!

Bangkok Has Something For Everyone

Whether you’re into crazy night parties, culture, food or something else, the city will keep you entertained.

You can spend a month in here, living a different experience, seeing new places, every day and still not be able to cover all tourist highlights.

And it’s not just this place, most places in Thailand – even mountain places like Pai where tourists are less frequent – are ideal for a solo trip. (Read my top things to do in Pai if you are planning to visit Pai).

Travelling In Bangkok Is Convenient

When it comes to a solo trip to Bangkok, it is super easy. In fact so easy that you actually feel that everything here is planned, or moreover designed to function, keeping a traveller’s ease in mind.

Here you can find super cheap hostels, for less than USD 5 a night, and then right next door you can find a luxurious property charging you a whopping USD 10,000 per night. Such a range of options makes it accessible for every kind of traveller.

The city’s public transport system makes it even better. From public buses to ferries, tuk-tuks to metered taxis, everything is in abundance, easy to find, and fairly priced. And if you manage to learn a few different bus routes – which take you from one corner of the city to another in under 20 Baht – you can save yourself a fortune.

There are many day trips worth exploring too. You can easily plan a solo trip from Bangkok to Amphawa or Bangkok to Ayutthaya . A day trip to Maeklong railway station is moreover worth a visit.

Bangkok is Safe

If compared to other Asian cities that come under the category of budget-cities-to-travel, Bangkok is safer. From being mugged to being ripped off, such atrocities are comparatively less likely to happen in Bangkok. Walk down a street in Bangkok, even at 2 in the night, and you will find the city just as much alive and safe as it were during the day-time.

A Solo Trip To Bangkok Is A Great Idea

There is no denying the fact that while travelling Bangkok solo, you are never alone. The city is full of travellers. And if you end up at one the popular backpacking streets namely, Khao San Road or Sukhumvit Soi 11, among a few others – you will have no problem in making new friends.

Khao San Road is an ideal place to stay if you are on a solo trip to Bangkok. Beginning at the landmark The Brick Bar, as you walk down, with a beer in your hand, you find happy backpackers from all over the world eating Pad Thai on the street and looking for someone to talk to. Khao San Street is unlike any other street in the world. In fact, the entire Bangkok city is unlike any other city.

The Thailand visa on arrival moreover makes it easy for people to plan a trip to Bangkok whenever they want.

Thai People

Despite being a bustling city where life never stops, local people in Bangkok always seem much affable and welcoming.

They aren’t friendly to a level that they will go out of their way to talk to anyone who walks past them because they respect other people’s privacy. But if you will interact with them, they will be very happy to speak and help you out in any way they can. What shocked me, even more, was the fact that every time I asked a tuk-tuk driver about a bus route, they happily distributed me with all the information they had, despite knowing it will only take their customer away.

A Solo Traveler's Guide To Bangkok

Traveling solo can be intimidating. You are heading into the great unknown, with nobody but yourself to have your back. So many top sights and attractions in Bangkok may seem like they are better seen with a handful of friends to accompany you. That being said, traveling alone is one of the most rewarding experiences that you will ever have. Traveling as a group can be detrimental to your experience abroad, as you have to tailor and shift your itinerary to better align with the majority. Thailand is known as the Land of Smiles. The people here are friendly and helpful, making Bangkok one of the best cities to travel in solo. Here is a guide as to how to spend your days in the City of Angels, alone.

Stay close to public transportation.

Because you are taking on the city of Bangkok alone, you will also be paying for your transportation without the relief of having to split the cost however many ways. Because of this, the best and cheapest way to get around the city is by utilizing public transportation, including the BTS Skytrain, the MRT Subway, or the boats that run on the Chao Phraya River. Of course, getting a taxi at some point is inevitable, but save yourself some time and money by using public transportation. The closer your accommodation is to these, the better.

Book a Hostel

Have a Drink on Khao San Road

Khao San Road certainly has mixed reviews. Some vouch by the nights they spend on this unforgiving road, while others steer clear of it as much as possible. This is a great area to meet people, however. Most of the bars that line the tourist-ridden street also have colorful plastic stools around shoddy, metal tables. Pull up a stool and grab a seat with your fellow travelers, and maybe even share a bucket or two. As goes for any situation, be wary of your surroundings and stay safe.

Go Where the Expats Go

Bangkok has an extensive expat community. Prior to taking on the city alone, it is a good idea to get connected with this group. One of the best areas to meet expats is Cheap Charlie’s, an outdoor, street-side bar filled with foreigners and cheap drinks to boot. Other great places to meet expats include Levels Club & Lounge, Saxophone Pub, the Australian Pub; essentially any pub will be filled with English-speaking expats.

Visit the Top Attractions

Bangkok has plenty of top sights and attractions that are jaw-dropping, whether you are alone or not. Some of the best places to visit in the city include the Grand Palace , which is also home to the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. It is in this area of the city you will also find Wat Pho , which houses the enormous Reclining Buddha on its grounds. You can spend ample time exploring these ancient areas. Wat Arun is also located near these two temples, however, it is currently under construction and much of the temple is covered in scaffolding.

Take on Bangkok’s Markets

Do not let all of that shiny baht burn a hole through your pocket. Instead, head to one of Bangkok’s outdoor shopping arenas and get ready for the shopping spree of a lifetime. Bangkok has some of the best markets and night bazaars in all of Southeast Asia. One of the most popular markets that foreigners visit is Chatuchak Weekend Market . It is one of the largest markets in the world, and the sheer number of goods and souvenirs certainly reflects its massive size. Whether you are on the hunt for a new outfit or just want to kill some time by exploring its weaving vendors and stalls, this is the market for you. Some other markets in Bangkok include JJ Green Night Market, Liab Duan Night Market, Rod Fai Train Market, Asiatique the Riverfront, and Pak Khlong, or the flower market. Many of these markets and night bazaars are only open on the weekend, so be sure to check online before venturing to one of these popular shopping scenes.

Learn Some Thai

While staying in backpacker hostels and visiting foreign-ridden areas of the city is one easy way to meet people, you will see the city much better in the hands of a local. While it is certainly more daunting to try and have a conversation with someone whose first language might not be English, you will find your solo traveling experience much more rewarding by doing so. Many Thais living in Bangkok already have a knowledge of basic English phrases, as it is a major city and they are oftentimes working and dealing with foreigners. Knowing a handful of Thai words is one way to attempt a conversation. Say hello, state your name, and most Thai people will appreciate your effort, even if your accent and intonation are horrific.

Tips for traveling solo in bangkok: learn from my experience to plan your trip.

I’m more used to natural parks than huge cities like Bangkok. And it had been a while since I spent time by myself in a foreign country. Still, I managed to have an awesome time when I was traveling solo in Bangkok. Here are a few tips to help you plan your solo trip to visit the world’s most visited city .

1. Get a SIM card

It’s a good tip for any traveller, but it’s even more important for solo travelers. In big cities, people can be busy and hard to interact with. I admit I would have felt lonely without my phone as it was many times my only way to share my day.

It was also very helpful to search for information. Travelling solo in Bangkok wasn’t particularly hard, but it can be challenging to remember everything when you don’t have a travel buddy. There are also not-so-helpful strangers or taxi drivers that will give you information that you should always double-check.

You can  purchase a SIM card online * and pick it up at the airport. I appreciated not wasting time comparing all the offers after a long flight. It gave me unlimited internet access, which is what I needed. Or, if your phone is compatible *, you could purchase an e-sim * before your trip and activate it once you arrive in Thailand. We’ve used Airalo * when travelling and have been very happy with their service. Plus, with an e-SIM, you no longer have to worry about not loosing your home SIM card!

2. Join a tour

There are many tours to visit Bangkok * and its surroundings. You can easily check out the attractions in Bangkok by yourself using public transport. But if you’re travelling solo in Bangkok, you may want to consider joining a small group tour.

I was lucky to have a private tour with TakeMeTour *, and I loved it. It made me feel like I had a local friend taking me to places. It was nice to interact with someone and get commentaries on things that were happening. The guide could also act as an interpreter between me and the locals – who rarely spoke English – which enhanced the experience.

3. Go out for dinner

After a long day exploring the city in the heat, I didn’t always feel like going out for dinner. In Thai restaurants, food is often placed in the middle of the table for all the party to share. It can make a solo traveller feel lonely.

But I’m glad I fought back the laziness and initial weird feeling of going out at night alone. Every time, I tried delicious food – which is part of the experience of visiting Thailand. Traveling solo in Bangkok was never a problem.

If you feel awkward not having a buddy with you, a book can be of really good company. Another option is to join a tour with a local. Check out this Tom Yum tour *, this seafood Chinatown tour *, this evening tour in Siam Square * or this nightlife tour *.

Go for a massage

That’s one of the rare must-do solo activities in Bangkok. If like me you are not used to getting massages and feel shy about it, you may want to start with a touristy spot. The famous Wat Pho, the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, is also known to be the birthplace of traditional massage. It’s relatively expensive to get a massage there, but they are used to dealing with foreigners and can speak English. Then, as you know better what to expect and get more comfortable with the idea, you can choose a less touristy and cheaper place.

If you don’t want close contact, don’t go for the Thai massage. They also offer reflexology or shoulder and head massages that could even be a better option if your aim is to relax. It feels fantastic to get a foot massage when you’ve walked around the city all day. And it’s a fantastic way to fill up the evening when you’re traveling solo in Bangkok.

I’d recommend always asking your hotel or other travellers for tips. I was staying at the  Ibis Siam * and the massage shop next door was great.

Take public transport

Taxis aren’t expensive and tuk-tuk looks fun. However, when traveling solo in Bangkok, I recommend taking public transport. The price for one person won’t be more expensive than other means of transport, and it’s a lot more eco-friendly. The BTS train is brand new and very comfortable. The small boats along the canals are very fun. It’s way better to see the city from that angle than getting stuck in traffic.

Moreover, taxis don’t always use the meter. I found it could be annoying to negotiate a price as a solo traveller. I used a cab to go from and to the airport, and it was fairly easy to find how much it should cost online.

Another option is Grab (the local Uber). I‘m not comfortable using these when traveling solo. When travelling solo, safety is often a concern. I haven’t heard anything bad about Grab in Thailand – but I’ve heard too many things about Uber that make me uncomfortable with the service. Tuk-tuk and motorbike rides can give you a thrill but as they disrespect the traffic rules, they surely not are my first choice.

Choose accommodation in the city centre

As I recommend going out for dinner and massage in the evening, it’s important that you do not worry about going back late to your hotel.

I liked staying in Siam (I was at the Ibis Siam *). I was close to the train station, had a massage place nearby and I could walk to different places for food. It was lively during the day but also at night, which made going out easier as I was traveling solo.

Is it safe to travel solo to Bangkok?

I had no issue as a solo female traveller in Bangkok. Like in any big city, you should be careful of pickpockets and use common sense to avoid certain areas or potential traps. You can learn more about safety in Thailand here *.

Solo Travel Tips: Bangkok, Thailand

Is Thailand a good solo travel destination, especially for women? What can you do in Bangkok as a solo traveler? What are the best tips for solo travel in Bangkok? All these questions, and more, will be answered in this post!

Thailand attracts millions of visitors every year. People just love how convenient it is to travel in the country. With its rich heritage and culture, not to mention the great food and the variety of things to do there, it’s no wonder millions of tourists visit it every year.

Like any other capital, Bangkok has lots of pollution and scams awaiting the clueless tourist. You will find the same in Manila or Saigon. However, I loved Bangkok; I went there before in 2011 and 2012, and in 2014, I lived there for four months, when restrictions on visa runs had yet to be implemented.  I loved the city — its people, its attractions, and of course, the food.

Readers have recently asked me about my solo travel tips to Bangkok so I decided once and for all to write this post. While this is targeted to solo female travelers, it can apply to other tourists as well.

Arriving in Bangkok

Bangkok has two airports: Suvarnabhumi, the main international airport, and Don Mueang, the old airport now used by AirAsia. When you arrive via Suvarnabhumi and don’t have a lot of bags, skip the taxi and go by train instead.

Go down to the lowest floor of the airport, and you’ll find the Airport Rail Link which goes to Phaya Thai, one of the BTS stations in the city. Once in Phaya Thai, find the nearest BTS station to your hotel and you’re all set. You don’t even have to go down to street level.

If you have an AirAsia flight and find yourself in Don Mueang, there are shuttle buses right outside the airport. Turn right once you exit from the arrival area. You will be dropped off at Mo Chit station, and from there, you can go to wherever your hotel is.

Accommodation in Bangkok: Hotel or Hostel?

As a solo traveler, you need not worry about accommodations in Bangkok. There are lots! Prices vary, of course. In choosing where to stay, ask yourself: what’s most important for you? Is it location? Price? Facilities? Wifi? For safety purposes, prioritize location. If your accommodation is cheap but is far from the city or is in a bad neighborhood, it’s not worth it.

When I lived in Bangkok, I stayed mostly in hostels rather than hotels for budget reasons. At prices ranging from THB280 to THB350 ($8-10), they were a good deal. The location was excellent (I usually stayed along Silom Road), and of course, Wifi was also very good. More importantly, the variety of travelers staying there made sure I had company whenever I wanted to.

I have yet to write reviews about the hostels I’ve stayed in, but the ones I can recommend are We Bangkok (I know it sounds weird LOL) and Silom Art Hostel .

We Bangkok is best for those who want to meet other travelers. There are 8-bed dorms as well as 4-bed ones and it was almost always fully booked when I was there. It’s a 5-minute walk to the Chong Nonsi station and there’s a 7-11 right across the hostel. There are gyms and a spa nearby too.

Silom Art , however, is best for those who want a beautifully decorated hostel which is not crowded. It never gets full (I don’t think they even fill half of their capacity) and there will be times when you will find yourself alone in the 5-bed dorm room. Food-wise, it isn’t so convenient. The nearest 7-11 is a 10-minute walk and street food is a 15-minute walk going to the Sala Daeng station. The nearest BTS station is Chong Nonsi (a 10-minute or so walk).

I’ve made a lot of friends from my stay at HQ Hostel (10 minutes walk to Sala Daeng station) but the staff is not so friendly especially if you stay longer than a week (I don’t know why). Wifi connection wasn’t so good, and I had my credit cards stolen there as well, the only time it happened in my travels.

I loved it for its lobby though; it encourages interactions with others. I also liked its location and it had the best beds of all hostels I’ve stayed in.

The only hotel I ever used in Bangkok was the Kingston Suites Hotel along Sukhumvit Road (around THB2,000/$61). I loved it; my room was huge, the buffet breakfast was very good, and they also have a gym and a pool, although these were located next door, in their sister hotel’s property. It’s around 5 minutes from Nana station, but they also have a shuttle that can take you there.

What to Do in Bangkok

Whether you only have a day or a month in Bangkok, there’s always plenty to see. Get the basics over and done with in the early part of your trip; go visit the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun during sunset. There are over 400 temples in the city, so if you’re into temples, you’d definitely get your fill. Here are seven of the best temples in Bangkok, according to CNN .

If you’re into shopping, of course, check out Chatuchak Market. It has thousands of stalls selling everything from clothes and shoes to paintings, books, home wares, and absolutely anything you can think of. They’re open only on weekends, so make sure to go there early (like 8am) as it gets hot and crowded later in the day. If you’re buying wholesale, there are couriers inside the market that can take care of shipping for you.

Want something more interesting? Head to Phloen Chit station where you can walk for 7 minutes to the Chao Mae Tuptim shrine, aka the Fertility Shrine (aka the Penis Shrine) where you will see hundreds of phallic objects.

If you’re into Thai food (and who isn’t?), you can take the Taste of Thailand food tour, which is a guided tour of Bangkok’s street food. Sure, you can just go and buy street food anytime (as I did), but it’s nice to hear of some background and see locals’ places as well.

You can also take cooking classes, if you’re really into food (I took a cooking class in Sangkhlaburi though), or use a site that connects you with locals and share a meal with them. Whatever you decide to do, it would be worth it. Thai food is the best for me, and I could never have enough of it!

If you’re into fitness, you would love Bangkok. There’s just so many options there, from lots of gyms to yoga, CrossFit, and other fitness classes. I used the CrossFit10500 box near Silom (5 minutes to Chong Nonsi station) for three months and loved it. It started my love affair with CrossFit.

I also went a lot to Lumpini Park to run and join aerobic classes (for free). The outdoor workout stations at the park are also either free or charge very minimal rates (something like THB20).

Want to watch the latest English movies at half of the usual cost? Head to Terminal 21 or Siam Paragon on Wednesdays, it’s only THB150 ($4) then. On other days, the cheapest would be from THB250. Wednesday movie days were my favorite time in Bangkok.

Day Trips From Bangkok

If you’re staying for some time in Bangkok (say, more than 4 days), I highly recommend you take a day trip to Ayutthaya Historical Park , a UNESCO World Heritage site. I went there twice, once on my own in 2012, and the second time with a group in 2016. Check out my post!

Go to the Hua Lamphong station in Bangkok, and from there, you will find trains going to Ayutthaya which can take around 2 hours. Once outside the station, follow the people going down to the river and cross to the other side. From there, rent a bicycle for the day and just go from one temple to another.

There are LOTS of temples in Ayutthaya, so just choose where you want to go. (A must, of course, is Wat Mahathat.) Pick up a brochure/travel guide beforehand from any major BTS station in Bangkok, it’s free.

Some tips: bring sunscreen, water, and a cap or a hat as it can get VERY HOT in Ayutthaya. When I was there, I had to stop at a 7-11 to buy sunscreen. Also, rent the bicycle on the other side of the river, not at the train station’s side. I did that, and I had to lug the fugg’n bike down to the boat and up again.

Scams to Look Out for in Bangkok

Sure, there are scams, but they’re easy to avoid if you do advanced reading beforehand. A common one is going to the Grand Palace where a tuktuk driver will tell you that it’s closed. It happened to me when I went there in 2011, but having read of it beforehand, I wasn’t victimized. I highly recommend just walking to the Grand Palace from the river, it’s not that far.

Male travelers, I think, are more at risk from scammers, especially those who are taken in by the beauty of Thai women and ladyboys. The Ping Pong show in Patpong Road is very well known. You go in a bar wanting to see women play ping-pong with their private parts, and get charged thousands of baht instead of just THB250 as you were made to believe. Best to avoid if you don’t want the hassle.

Or, how about this. Someone I know got picked up by a Thai woman and they had an affair for a week or so, the farang so flattered that this lovely girl told him she loved him. They separated at the airport with more professions of love and lots of tears.

Months later, the Thai woman contacted him and told him she was pregnant with his baby. Despite warnings from friends, he sent her money for the baby for 2 years and even decided he wanted to marry her and bring her to Europe. His embassy — very wise move! — required a paternity test, and lo and behold, the baby he had been supporting for years was not his after all!

Be careful of the Chao Phraya river tour scam!

Okay, so the guy was just particularly stupid. I mean, who would get taken in by a pregnancy scam?? And who wouldn’t use protection if they were picked up by a prostitute in a foreign country? Still, this scam has also been noted before . Here’s another one: smiling Thais and dumb tourists .

Safety Considerations for Solo Travelers in Bangkok

Whenever readers ask me which city I recommend for international travel, I always say Bangkok. For me, it’s safer than most cities I’d been to. Of course, I can’t say that it’s extremely safe there; after all, it’s the capital, it has its shares of scams and minor thieves roaming the streets on the lookout for clueless travelers.

You can avoid being victimized by scammers if you read up on the common scams mentioned above. Practice common sense as well when you’re going around. That is, keep your purse close to you, lock up your valuable stuff in the hostel, make sure the taxi turns on the meter, agree on a price with the tuktuk driver beforehand if you don’t want a surprise later, and choose a good neighborhood for your hostel.

For first time international solo travelers, there’s no other city I would recommend. In Bangkok, everyone’s free to do their own thing. Locals won’t blink at same-sex couples, and if you want to wear your yoga pants while out and about, you won’t get a second look. (Still, of course, you’d have to know  what to pack for Thailand !) great site and very informative. Planning my first round the world trip beginning of sept from the u.k. Solo and will be in Bangkok after I’ve been in Phuket for 8 nights, got 7 nights in BK before either getting overnight train to Chiang Mai or flying for convenience. I’m looking forward to visiting temples, markets, experiences authentic Thai massages. I see cherry mentioned festivals in November? I’ll be there 19th – 25th. Gotta say I was a little nervous about safety and i cancelled my south beach Miami part of my trip in favour of staying in the safety of universal studios Florida but I’ve realised I have to be brave and push ahead. Staying at Rose hotel which looks very close to Lumphini park and bus 45 depot. I have reservations about mosquitos and am taking lots of repellent as I don’t want to catch malaria or dengue fever. The hostels you listed look lovely, I’m yet to take that plunge away from hotels. My trip was due to finish in Nepal at a hostel for two weeks but I just cancelled in favour of a more time in Thailand as I had fears over getting sick in Nepal and safety of solo travel. Hope I didn’t make mistake but there are plenty of temples and sights to see in Thailand and I won’t be so lonely perhaps.

Hi Simon. You would love it in Bangkok and Thailand in general. There are so many international travelers there. As always, though, you should read up about scams, esp the ones involving women and ladyboys. They target white men 😀 Nepal is also very beautiful. I hope you can go there someday!

For just 3 days, I would recommend going around the city, hitting the major temples. If you’re there on a weekend, hit Chatuchak Market as well. From BKK, you can easily take the bus to Chiang Mai. Hi Aleah, thanks for this information…. my friend is telling me not to go to Thailand because of the August bombing in the middle of the city and the political situation there, good thing i saw your blog and now i am planning my itinerary… My target date is April 20, 2016 it’s going to be my first trip abroad and i am travelling alone, my first stop is Kuala Lumpur for 3 days, then take a train to Penang island for another 3 days (they say that Penang is worth a visit too) then from Penang’s Butterworth train station directly to Bangkok and planning to stay there for atleast 5 days… maybe i’ll just pick a tourist map there and roam around the city, i want to try street food but not a fan of super spicy food.. i’m also planning to go straight to Siem Reap if my budget allow me. I hope i can find solo/group traveler than i can talk to or even share a boat ride or cab. is there a good and safe hotel for a 1,400 Baht?

Kingston is near the BTS, so you can easily go anywhere from there. Note that at night, you may have to take a tuktuk or a taxi if you don’t want to walk back to the hotel from the station.

I had a trainer on my job early in my career who became a great friend of mine. He went to Thailand a couple times a year and was trying and trying to get me to go with him to experience it and especially Bangkok. Another one of those…I wish would gone…moments. I love Bangkok, It is amazing for solo travellers. I definitely agree you rarely need a taxi when the BTS and buses are so good! If you do need a taxi, make sure it is on the meter, not an agreed price or you will get hugely overcharged!

Ven, sorry for the late response. You won’t have to worry about internet in Thailand. It’s really fast there. Mobile is possible, yes. Just buy a local SIM card and make sure to buy their data package. Someday I will do a post like this on Vietnam. Someday haha

I think Bangkok is a great city! It’s getting a bit hot now though. And locals have said this isn’t even hot. I love the diversity. Mixture of expats locals and travellers.

Allowing yourself extra time to travel is a must and make sure you carry water! Being stuck in rush hour traffic in a bus isn’t great fun.

I usually just take the BTS, the traffic there is almost as bad as in Manila haha

Hi Cathy. I think Bangkok is for all ages and all kinds of travelers. The city is big enough to provide everything that one needs and wants. That’s why it’s one of the most popular cities in Asia, if it isn’t the number one.

This is such a handy guide! I’d love to go to Bangkok but feel a bit nervous about the prospect of going alone, so this was quite reassuring. The food tour sounds especially appealing; like you said, who DOESN’T like Thai food?

There are lots and lots of solo travelers (male and female) in BKK, Jessica. You definitely won’t be alone for long if you stay at a hostel!

Our favoured method of getting around Bangkok would definitely be walking. Especially as we won’t be able to resist the delicious food. Our bodies will definitely appreciate the exercise.

I also walked a lot in Bangkok, Matthew. From the hostel, for example, it’s only around 20 minutes by foot to Lumpini Park, and around 5-10 minutes to the nearest station. There are so many interesting things to see along Silom Road that you won’t feel tired at all!

I would definitely be interested in doing a food tour and taking a cooking class. It’s been a very long time since I visited Bangkok, but I still have such great memories of exploring Ayutthaya. I always recommend it to anyone who is visiting Bangkok. Great tips about avoiding scams and the best location for renting a bike at Ayutthaya.

My most distinct memory of Ayutthaya was how hot it was LOL I agree, the food in Thailand is just superb!

My husband was paranoid and cancelled our 4 day stopover because of the political situation. One of the biggest regrets of my travel life. Great suggestions Aleah. It’s always handy to know how to get to the city centre without using the taxis. I like to splurge the first night or two in a new city until I get my bearings, especially if I’m suffering from jet lag.

Seems like you found your “home away from home” destination. You’re right every city has its own brand of scams and scammers. Just heads up and trust your gut. Idk if I’m able to visit Bangkok in the future, but somehow I’m still waiting for the one thing would make me wanna go to Bangkok. It does not help that Thai food is not my fave cuisine 🙁

Choose the best time to travel in Thailand if you want to capture those clear blue sky Instagram pictures. Winter is the best season for a solo trip to Thailand. Try to avoid monsoon time from July to October. The best time to visit Thailand is from November to mid-April.

Thailand’s Currency:

Thai Baht is the only currency you can use during your Thailand tour. 1 Thai Baht = 0.033 USD = 0.027 Pound = 2.34 INR

Thailand Language:

Thai is the one and only official language in Thailand. Most of the people in Thailand can speak and understand English pretty well.

Thailand SIM Card:

The Internet is a must when you are traveling to a new country because from booking a local cab to the online travel guide, you will need the internet to use your best Travel Apps .

There are several SIM card providers in Thailand like SimOptions, TrueMove, China Unicom, AIS, DTAC etc. I will recommend going with TrueMove traveler-friendly package which is the cheapest option among others.

What to Wear in Thailand:

Thailand is a tropical country with a hot and humid climate. Stuff your suitcase with enough modest, lightweight, flowy clothes . You are going to visit a new country, so dress properly and show respect for their culture.

Women should cover their shoulders and knees while visiting any Thai temple. Men shouldn’t wear a sleeveless shirt or shorts at temples. Female travelers can wear bikini or swimsuit at the beaches but try to cover up while returning to your hotel from the beach. For more details, you can check What to Wear in Thailand .

Visa and Passport:

There are two options to get a visa for the Thailand solo trip.

• Visa on Arrival: If you travel in Thailand for less than 16 days you get this. Documents needed: Airline boarding pass, a valid passport for at least the next 6 months of validation, visa application form, some passport size photographs, return flight and hotel booking documents and 20000 TBH. Here is the form .
• Apply for a visa before the journey: If you travel for more than 30 days you can apply for this before your journey starts. Documents required for this visa: valid passport, passport size photos, visa application form, flight and hotel tickets, last 3 months bank statement and cover letter from main applicant.

How to Reach Thailand:

By Air: It is the most convenient way to travel in Thailand.   Bangkok , The capital city of Thailand has two international airports: Don Mueang International Airport and Suvarnabhumi Airport. Thailand is connected with most of the major cities around the world.

Maximum south Asian countries have direct flights to other international airports in Thailand. For Indian travelers, there are direct flights to Suvarnabhumi airport from Kolkata, New Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Mumbai. The cheapest flight you can book  on the route from Kolkata to Bangkok.

By Train: Thailand’s international train service connects only two countries Malaysia and Singapore. Even you can travel to Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi which are interconnected by rail route. No rail route is there from India to Thailand.

By Road: Thailand is well connected by road with several countries like Malaysia, Singapore, and India. There are several daily bus services from Malaysia and Singapore. From India, you can do a road trip from India-Mayanmar-Thailand route but make sure you have an International Driving Permit and Valid Driving License.

Best Places to Visit in Thailand:

Pattaya is one of the most popular beach resorts in Thailand. Besides this, it is also famous for its nightlife. There are three parts in Pattaya: North, Central and South Pattaya. Naklua in North Pattaya and Jomtien in South Pattaya are the most visited beaches by the tourists for its quieter and relaxing experience.

How to reach Pattaya:

Suvarnabhumi Airport to Pattaya bus:  You can book your bus ticket from Bell Bus Service’s ticket counter to travel to Pattaya that costs around 120 Baht and take around 2 hours to reach Pattaya.

Don Muang Airport to Pattaya bus:  There is no direct bus from Don Muang Airport to Pattaya. First, you have to go to the first floor(level 1) of DMK Airport. There you can find an Airport bus that goes to Mo Chit Bus Station(last stoppage). It’s not a free bus and costs just 30 Baht. From Mo Chit Bus Station you will get the bus for Pattaya that leaves in every 30 minutes from 6 am to 10 pm.

Please note: There are two Mo Chit Stations: Mo Chit Train Station(BTS) and Mo Chit Bus Station. Don’t get off at Mo Chit Train Station(last stoppage), else you have to go another 2 km to get a bus for Pattaya.

• Suvarnabhumi Airport to Pattaya distance: 122 km.
• Don Muang Airport(DMK) to Pattaya distance: 162 km.

You have to pay extra 20 Baht if your luggage weight is more than 20 kg.

Best Places to visit in Pattaya:

Coral island/ koh larn island:  .

It is a little paradise near Pattaya beyond the urban chaos and hustle-bustle. There is a total of 7 islands in Koh Larn.

How to reach Coral Island: It is 7.5 km west of Pattaya beach. You can take Tuktuk to reach Bali Hai Pier from where you will get an enchanting view of Pattaya. From there take a boat that takes around 30 minutes to reach to Coral Island. You can take a speed boat(300 Baht/person) or ferry(30 Baht/person) to reach Tawaen beach which is the most visited beach in Koh Larn.

Things to do in Coral Island:  There are plenty of water adventure sports in Koh Larn island, like Parasailing behind a speed boat, Banana boat, Jetski, Sea walking, Snorkeling, Scuba diving etc. You can also rent a motorbike(200 Baht/day) and explore the islands with full freedom.

A hike will also be a great idea to explore Koh Lern.  If you want to stay at the beach then take a sunbath on the beaches or you can swim in the tropical water on all the beaches in Coral Island.

Tiger Park:

This is the most exciting and attractive place in Pattaya between all age groups. Here you can touch, hug and even take a photo with the tigers. And the best part is that you get to sleep on them (if you dare). 

Here tigers are not caged, but tiger trainers always there to make you feel safe. From big tigers to the small cub, every size of tigers is there with open chain. Go, see, feel, hear and have a lifetime thrilling experience.

Khao Pattaya View Point:

It is Pattaya’s most popular viewpoint from where you get the view of Pattaya’s crescent-shaped bay. Enjoy the great panoramic view of Pattaya city from the top of the Pratumnak hill. Click some amazing pictures from here for your Instagram gallery. The best time yo take great pictures is just before the sunset.

How to reach Khao Pattaya View Point:

It is located between South Pattaya and Jomtien beach and 3.5 km away from Central Pattaya. You can book a taxi or take a tuk-tuk to reach the viewpoint.

Timing: 7:30 am – 9:00 pm

Entry fee:  Free

Big Buddha(Wat Phra Yai):

This Buddhist temple is located on Pratumnak Hill near Jomtien beach. The majestic temple complex depicts the rich culture and artistic view of Thailand. The 18 meter tall Buddha statue is the main highlight of Wat Phra Yai temple. One can get an amazing view of this Buddhist sacred place.

How to reach Wat Phra Yai:  

Big Buddha of Pattaya is situated 2.5 km away from South Pattaya. You can book a taxi or take a tuk-tuk to reach the viewpoint of Pattaya. From there it is just 800 meters away.

Wat Phra Yai Timing:

7:00 am – 10.00 pm

Wat Phra Yai Entry Fee:  Free

Pattaya Walking Street:

Pattaya Walking Street is no doubt Thailand’s most famous nightlife destination. It will be an incredible experience to be a part of the nightlife in Pattaya Walking Street. You will be amazed by the neon lights, color, music, noise and overall ambiance.

If you visit Thailand with family then try to avoid this place after 7 pm else you and your family might get into an embarrassing situation.

How to reach Pattaya Walking Street:

Pattaya Walking Street is just 1.2 km from Central Pattaya. You can walk along the beach to reach there or take a tuk-tuk that is all the time available there.

Things to do in Pattaya Walking Street:

Live Band Performance is very popular in Pattaya Walking Street. You can enjoy the great ambiance with a live band performance and a can of beer(approx. 100 Baht).

That’s a fantastic detailed guide for a first time visitor to Thailand. I visited exactly these cities on my first trip as well and I absolutely loved Phuket, Phi Phi Islands and Krabi. The James Bond Island was part of an island hopping tour and that was a really cool one because we went to 4 islands which were quite amazing. Tips for travelling from India to Thailand were exactly what I googled, back when I discovered I was travelling to Bangkok for the first time. I was excited, for this was my first time living in a foreign country all alone.

A country that’s safe, cheap, travel-friendly, and in close proximity (to India) – what more does one want? If you’re still faced with an ocean of doubts, let me tell you all the useful tips for travelling from India to Thailand, especially if it’s your first time.

Since I was going to be living alone in Thailand for 7 months, I was faced with a whole new set of questions. – ” What are my go-to places for when I crave Dal Makhani ?” “What are safe places to travel solo” etc etc. My current blog is an endeavour to help my fellow Indians with their first trip to Thailand and answer all questions. Whether you’re travelling for a day, for a week, for a month, or for a year, I will make an effort to share with you all the tips that I learned during my first time in Thailand.

I hope that my 7-month long experience in Thailand helps all my fellow Indians plan an efficient and cost-effective trip. 

These are my top 18 tips for all first-time travellers to Thailand.

A huge part of the Thai economy sustains itself from travel and tourism. So overall, Thailand is a really easy country to travel to even if it’s your first time. However, let me dive deep into every possible kind of tip that might help you in this strange but nice Asian country.

Visa tips for travelling from India to Thailand

Top tip: decide the nature of your visa in time.

For Indian travellers, two kinds of visa exists – 1) Visa on Arrival (VOA) in case your stay is limited to less than 15 days in Thailand. You can procure this visa from the airport itself 2) Standard Visa in case your stay is more than 30 days in Thailand. For this visa, you’ll have to apply beforehand at the Royal Thai Embassy. Its offices lie in 3 Indian metros – Chennai, Delhi and Kolkata.

A valid passport, VOA application form, photographs, confirmed return tickets, proof of accommodation, and proof of sufficient funds to support your trip.

In a general scenario, all you need to do is show up at the airport with your passport, a few passport photographs, and 2,000 THB. In case you want to extend your stay beyond 15 days, you can get the same done at the Immigration Bureau.

The first thing that comes to mind when planning a visit to Thailand is the money issue. Where do I get my money exchanged? What’s the scene with Forex cards? What are Forex card charges in Thailand? At the Airport

To start with, remember that you need to pay your VOA (Visa on Arrival) fee in baht only (in cases that it isn’t waived off). If you haven’t carried bahts along with you, you could get it exchanged at booths in the customs hall. However, the rates would be relatively higher and it wouldn’t be a good idea to exchange all your money there.

After your visa formalities, you could head to B Floor and visit one of the many currency exchange booths to get better deals.

Outside the Airport

If you’re looking out for the cheapest rates, simply get it done outside of the airport (one of the most crucial tips for travelling from India to Thailand). Super Rich is one of the most popular money exchange services in Thailand.

Forex Cards

Alternatively, you could carry a Forex card along with you and simply withdraw at the ATM. Every time you withdraw, you’ll be charged a fee of 220 THB and the maximum limit to withdraw at a time is 25,000 THB.

Top tip: bunk in backpacking hostels or homestays.

Since I was going to stay in Thailand, across places for so many months, I had to bunk myself in a budget stay. What could be better than a backpacking hostel?

It makes me happy to share with you all that backpacking hostels are super clean, safe and fun across Thailand. Not only do you connect with so many people there but also save a huge amount of money. 

In Bangkok, I stayed at the YES KAOSAN BACKPACKING HOSTEL . Not only was I super comfortable but made a lot of friends as well.

Top tip: dig the right eateries across thailand.

On my first night in Thailand, I was clueless. And hungry. Having no knowledge of food apps and delivery services, I simply decided to go for a walk. All this while, I was of the assumption that Mumbai (my hometown) is exploding with street food.

No matter what part of Thailand you are in, street food will be found in abundance. “Do they never cook at home?” I couldn’t wonder. I’d walked barely a kilometre and passed stalls selling all kinds of food – fried rice, noodles, sausages, sautéed veggies, Thai Rotis, fresh fruits, fruit juices, coffee, etc. Just a short walk made me witness a new cuisine altogether – in terms of looks, taste, aroma and fragrance.

International Cuisine in Thailand

I’m simply going to assume that a trip to Thailand necessarily means a trip to Bangkok for all. While trying out authentic Thai food is fun, there’ll definitely be days that you’ll want to play it safe. You’re going to want to eat food you’re familiar with, and food you don’t have to think twice before ordering. Bangkok’s got your back there.

No matter what you’re craving: Spanish paella, Italian spaghetti, Mexican burritos, Indian biryani or Middle Eastern hummus – you’ll be sure to find it in Bangkok’s finest restaurants.

Instagram boasts numerous colourful photographs of night markets in Bangkok. 10 days into Thailand, I found myself craving Indian food. I was sure of the fact that Bangkok has a number of Indian restaurants, but was blown away to see how many.

No matter what your budget is, you can enjoy a wholesome Indian meal in Bangkok. Areas where you’ll find clusters of Indian restaurants in Bangkok are Pratunam, Little India or Phahurat, and Silom.

Also, keep in mind that you won’t find Indian restaurants across all of Thailand. Bangkok is an exception because it caters to a huge Indian population.

What’s for Vegetarians in Thailand?

On navigating my way through one of the local markets in Thailand, I was convinced that Thailand is blessed with a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. I told myself that even in the worst of situations, I could survive by munching on bread and fruits.

Doable? Not really. You cannot possibly live on just that for months. Well, at least I can’t. The very next day, I found myself awkwardly pointing out meaty things at a street-side stall, trying to tell the lady in her late 60’s all the things I do not eat.

The reason why I did that, and not just use Google Translate was because of the Thai conceptualisation of Vegetarianism. Being vegetarian in a number of Asian countries would translate to not eating chunky pieces of meat. Other things like oyster sauce, chicken garnishing, and fish oil are deemed to be okay.

I nervously waited for my food to come. I was soon ushered to a wooden table with a low wooden stool. A steamy plate, heaped with rice and sautéed veggies made it to my table. It was delicious, and I do not remember the last time I felt fuller – both physically and emotionally.

Tips for Travelling from India to Thailand as a Vegetarian

Vegetarian food can certainly be found and consumed in Thailand. You simply need to be more alert, and less picky.

Transport tips for travelling from India to Thailand

Top tip: use metered cabs, ferries and buses more.

Commuting from point A to point B is relatively simple and cheap in Thailand. While in Bangkok, you will have endless transport options to choose from.

Metered cabs can be found all across the city quite conveniently.

Tip: Make sure that the cab is a metered one, and that the driver is not charging you a fixed rate.

There were times that we’ve been pitched 200-300 THB for a mere 10-kilometre drive. Say no, or look for another cab in that case.

Alternatively, you could download the Grab App on your smartphones – a substitute for Uber/Ola in Thailand. I personally find them to be more expensive, but they could prove to be a convenient option at times

Tip: You can also opt for the motorbike taxi, not just for the experience but to cruise past the unending traffic in Bangkok.

BTS Skytrain

In case you’re travelling alone and do not wish to spend on cabs, Bangkok also offers a BTS Skytrain in the Sukhumvit and Silom areas. These are hard-core tourist areas, thus making it a reliable and economical option to commute especially for tourists.

Additionally, an underground MRT subway intersects the BTS at multiple points, offering commuters greater convenience in terms of reaching their destinations.

Bangkok also has a well-connected network when it comes to buses.

The first-ever bus that I took in Bangkok, cost me a mere 7 baht. Yes, that’s right. Google Maps are pretty helpful to get information on buses, or you could simply ask the locals.

Lastly, ferries run along the Chao Phraya River, transporting thousands of people on a daily basis. They are a great and pocket-friendly option. 

You must take the ferry at least once, just for the experience.

I’ve caught some of the most beautiful sunsets while on these rides, and these ferries are undoubtedly a blessing during peak hours.

Long-Distance Travel

For long-distance travel, you can opt for 1) Trains 2) Mini Vans/Buses. Although trains are cheaper, buses are faster and also more popular.

Safety tips for travelling from India to Thailand

Top tip: don't venture into lonely places and deserted beaches.

If you’re travelling solo, try not to catch so much attention to yourself by being rowdy or rude. Respect the place and its people. The more polite you’ll be the more the locals will help you out in times of need. If you’re travelling in a group, don’t end up misbehaving with the locals at any point in time. Not even during your visit to any nightclub.

Your safety lies in your own hands especially in the way you behave. People in general around Thailand are very hospitable and so don’t mess with them. Instead, try being a part of their community.

Party tips for travelling from India to Thailand

Top tip: buy booze from 7 elevens if you want to go party.

Bangkok equates to wild partying in most people’s heads.

It’s true. On a Tuesday night, I headed to one of the ‘happening areas’ of Bangkok at night. Trust me when I say this, I haven’t even seen Saturday nights back in Bombay (my hometown) as lit. Happy hours, live music, good food, and great crowds in almost each and every bar lined the street.

What’s best is that Thailand’s nightlife is not just restricted to Bangkok, but also to North and South Thailand. No matter what part of Thailand you’re headed to, nights won’t be boring.

One of the most popular nightlife experiences in other parts of Thailand is the Full Moon Party at Koh Phangan. I had the opportunity to be a part of one such kickass full moon party arranged by a local agent. I was new in the place so I needed an agent to fix me up. You too can go for it. It was quite the value for money.

Massage tips for travelling from India to Thailand

Top tip: do not spend more than 300 thb on a thai massage.

It’s possible that you’re a little sceptical about getting the massage done, even though you really want to. A number of questions could be baffling you – do I keep my clothes on? What if the massage is too harsh and causes pain? Will it be in an enclosed room?

In most parlours, you will be given a set of loose, comfortable and clean clothes. While it is generally optional to change into it, you will only have a better experience if you do.

Next, and also most important, in case you find the massage to be too harsh on your body, you need to ask them to be gentler. Everybody has a different body, and you being vocal about what feels good and what doesn’t will not only help the masseuse but also yourself.

Thai massages sometimes have an assumed sexual connotation. That can make massage. Well, interesting and awkward. To avoid such encounters or services you do not desire, stay out of the shady areas or just make things clear right at the start.

Social tips for travelling from India to Thailand

Follow the unspoken social etiquette in thailand.

Travelling to a country that’s as culturally rich as Thailand might require some homework. You do not want to engage in any behaviour or gesture that is considered rude by the locals.  One of the most important tips for travelling from India to Thailand is to do some prior research on the subject.

So, read on to find out what you must do and what should be avoided –

1. Being confrontational, overtly honest and critical might not be taken too well by Thais.

2. The Thai national anthem is played at 8 am and 6 pm in some public places. It would be great if you could show respect by standing still for those 2-3 minutes.

3. Cover your head and shoulders when visiting religious or sacred places.

4. Talking about the King or politics openly isn’t appreciated.

5. Whenever you enter someone’s home, remove your shoes unless specified otherwise.

6. The word khun is added before the first name as a symbol of respect.

7. Touching someone’s head is the last thing you’d want to do.

Must-Know Thai Phrases for gaining respect socially

You do not want the language to become a barrier in your travels. One of the tips for travelling from India to Thailand is to try to learn and memorise some of these important Thai phrases. 

Note that Thai is a difficult language to learn. You do not need to get intimidated if you don’t seem to remember the words right. However, do give it a shot. The locals will be pleased to hear you say a word in Thai.

Top tip: save money by saying no to packings.

There have been times that I’ve come back home empty-handed because there were just so many options. (PS: doesn’t happen to all, I’m just a bad shopper.)

The biggest weekend market in the world; you can buy anything and everything at dirt cheap prices out there.

Imagine floors and floors of shoes, bags and clothes.

Seen those colourful Instagram photographs of night markets, hustling with tourists, locals and vendors selling all kinds of stuff?

Need to buy cameras? Laptops? Mobile phones? Chargers? Spare parts? Head to MBK.

Out of all the south-east Asian countries, I’ve visited, Thailand is undoubtedly my favourite. Contrary to popular belief, Thailand is much more than just pretty beaches – mountains, hikes, treks, waterfalls, national parks, it has it all.

Despite having spent 7 months in this beautiful country, I could not manage to see all that I wanted to. I guess that’s the reason why it keeps calling out to me – over and over again. But having a tight budget doesn't mean that you can't travel overseas: You just have to pick the right destinations.  

So where should you go?  

These are the 7 cheapest travel destinations for 2024 according to a new report from Wethrift :  

7. Bangkok, Thailand  

Thailand is a mecca for budget travelers looking to stretch their dollars and enjoy an affordable vacation on a budget. And the best place to do this is Bangkok.  

From the beauty of the Grand Palace to the excitement of the floating markets, there's something for everyone here. And at great prices.  

Expect to spend just over a dollar on a single journey on public transport or $49 per night on average for a hotel room.  

6. Bali, Indonesia  

If you're looking for your own patch of tropical paradise, then Bali is the perfect place to be. 

The 6 th cheapest travel destination for 2024, Bali boasts delicious and affordable cuisine, beautiful beaches, and a wide range of cultural attractions. It's a great place to relax and unwind. 

Average accommodation prices are just $75 per person, but it is the food and drink that are particularly affordable here.

You should expect to spend an average of just $1.76 for a meal and $2.38 for a drink, meaning that it will cost less to fill your belly than to have a beer!

5. Hurghada, Egypt  

If you're looking for an affordable relaxing beach resort then Hurghada is one of the best options and is also the 5 th cheapest travel destination right now.  

Hurghada is a busy resort town on Egypt's Red Sea Coast and is best known for its abundance of all-inclusive hotels, as well as for the quality of the diving and snorkeling. Above the water, enthusiasts travel from all over the world for the windsurfing here.  

Usually, these activities don't come cheap, but the average cost of attractions in Hurghada is just $55 and you can grab a drink for just over a dollar.  

Accommodation is a little pricier, at $95 per night, but the quality of the accommodation here is high.  

4. Istanbul, Turkey  

One of the most culturally rich destinations in Turkey, Istanbul is also my personal favorite.

It is currently the world's most visited city and the fourth most affordable.  

Attractions can be a little pricey here, especially since the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque introduced an admission fee at the beginning of the year, but access to the famous Blue Mosque is still free.  

Perhaps the most affordable aspect of a stay in Istanbul is public transport, which costs just 41 cents per journey, and a meal costs just $8.56.  

Accommodation standards in the city are high, although rooms tend to be a little smaller than in other European cities. Expect to pay an average of $89 per night.  

3. Cairo, Egypt  

Two Egyptian destinations made this list, showing just how cheap it is to visit Egypt right now .  

The average cost for a single journey on public transport is just 32 cents, while a simple meal will cost just $4.81 on average. 

Cairo also topped the chart for being the city with the most affordable tourist attractions and tours. The average tour ticket in the city will set you back $47.60 per person. 

And this is a great place to enjoy tourist attractions. From the artifacts in the Egyptian Museum to the Pyramids and the Great Sphinx in Giza, there's so much to see and do here. 

Taking a short Nile cruise is a great way to see as much of the city as possible in a relatively short period of time.   

2. Hanoi, Vietnam  

Hanoi has long been a popular spot for digital nomads and backpackers looking for a cost-effective place to live and explore and this report shows that it's a great spot for tourists on a budget too.  

Public transport here costs as little as 29 cents per journey, and the average hotel stay is just $41 per night.  

Hanoi is a vibrant and bustling city. The Old Quarter is the best spot for travelers on a budget, but the whole city is affordable. Boasting centuries-old architecture and rich culture, there's so much to see and do here.  

1. New Delhi, India  

It might not be a conventional mainstream tourist destination, but the cheapest travel destination for 2024 is New Delhi in India.  

Exploring this culturally fascinating city is incredible affordable with attractions such as Lotus Temple, Visit Lodhi Gardens, and Nizamuddin Auliya Dargah available for free. Entrance to the National Museum is just $5.96, meaning that even paid attractions are affordable too.  

Street food options and vibrant food markets are plentiful here and you can enjoy a full meal for as little as $2.41 a meal. The average cost of a journey on public transportation in the city is just 35 cents.  

Obviously we're aware that flying to New Delhi doesn't come cheap. But even if you break the bank on flights to India, you'll find there are big savings to be had when you arrive.
