Remember Ambassadair Daytrips? They’re Back

travel club indianapolis

Legacy Travel Club , started by a former ATA employee and an Ambassadair veteran, hopes to relaunch the one-day escape. After years of planning to revive the Ambassadair model by courting investors and finding a plane to charter, Legacy founder Chris Allen has announced the first trip: a jaunt to Mackinac Island, Michigan, on June 21. The quaint, car-free island at the top of the state’s mitten was a perennial favorite among Ambassadair members. Visitors will have the day free to explore the landmark Grand Hotel, bike the coastline, or eat their weight in fudge. The flight is scheduled to return by 10 p.m.

Legacy is rolling out with Ambassadair’s old pricing: $99 annual membership (required for the Mackinac trip) and $287 for the daytrip, which includes airfare, transportation to the ferry, and the ferry ticket. Legacy is also arranging a daytrip from Louisville to the Biltmore mansion in North Carolina on June 22 for $264 (no membership required). It’s too soon to tell if Legacy’s business model will fly long-term—but for a couple of days in June, at least, the old Ambassadair is back.

"We Teach More Than Just The Game."

Startup looks to Louisville for new travel club

An Indianapolis-based startup is looking to bring back a travel club popularized in the 1970s and 80s by offering non-stop flights to fun-and-sun travel destinations to a new generation of travelers in Kentucky and Indiana.

Travel clubs take dues-paying members to vacation spots that are usually hard to reach for travelers not in major U.S. cities. Legacy Travel Club, founded by Indianapolis-native Chris Allen, recently began enticing investors with the idea of yearly flights to places such as Florida, California and St. Martin.

"It's the sweet spot between charter flying and commercial airlines — it's the best of both worlds," Allen said.

Legacy Travel Club bills itself as a full-service destination guide, providing travel, lodging and tour guides to members interested in specific trips. Allen said the range of trips will vary with duration as short as one-day trips or as long as a week.

While Legacy Travel Club has only seriously been pursuing investors since the beginning of June, Allen said the momentum they've seen should allow them to begin operation by the second quarter of 2016.

MORE TRAVEL: Five road trips in five hours

Allen said the company is currently in talks with the Louisville Regional Airport Authority about taking over the gates left by the exit of Northwest Airlines and creating the first private lounge in Louisville International Airport.

Norman Stiefler, a healthcare consultant in Louisville and an early investor in Legacy Travel Club, said he decided to back Legacy because of the stark difference between the ease it offers and the current state of air travel.

Stiefler was previously a member of the travel club Ambassadair and enjoys having a one-stop-shop for traveling. In addition to families and Louisville's well-off, Stiefler said Legacy Travel Club offers promising benefits for retirees.

"When me and my wife retire and we'll have plenty of time to travel, the places that Legacy goes to — basically resort areas — are place we will want to travel to," Stiefler said.

Legacy Travel Club has been a four-year long project for Allen. Both he and his wife Sandy raided their 401K's and put all they had into the company, betting that Louisville and Indianapolis stand to benefit from reviving the travel club service.

Many of the managers of the start-up, including Allen, are former employees of Air Trans America and ATA's travel club that previously dominated the travel club market in Indiana.

Air Trans America folded in the early 2000's when the consolidation of air carriers forced smaller airlines to close up shop or be bought out. ATA's travel club was bought out by Grueninger Travel Group in 2005.

"In a sense we are putting the band back together," he said. "We are applying all the lessons learned from ATA's demise."

At the same time, the consolidation of air carriers is working to the advantage of small travel clubs and private carriers in cities with smaller airports.

The four big airlines currently control roughly 85 percent of all air travel, according to the Regional Airport Authority, meaning only four companies choose what destinations to fly to and which to leave out.

Tom Tyra, director of marketing and air service at the Louisville Regional Airport Authority, said companies such as Legacy Travel Club, can help Louisville International Airport fill those gaps and bring new destinations for customers.

"We're interested in working with him, because there may be routes that, quite frankly, don't rise to the radar of the big carriers, but after Legacy serves it, it makes our case a little strong that there is demand for that destination," he said.

Tyra said small carriers and travel clubs can also help the airport offer travel options not currently available to local companies trying to fly in for a specific event.

Memberships will cost a family $199 or $499 for an individual. Members will receive access to all of Legacy Travel Club trips and services.
