it's a long journey

It's a long long journey Till I know whera I'm supposed to be It's a long long journey And I don't know if I can believe When shadows fall and block my eyes I am lost and know that I must hide It's a long long journey Till I find my way home to you Many days I've spent Drifting on through empty shores Wondering what's my purpose Wondering how to make me strong I know I will falter I know I will cry I know you'll be standing by my side It's a long long journey And I need to be close to you Sometimes it feels no one understands I don't even know why I do the things I do When pride builds me up till I can't see my soul Will you break down these walls and pull me through? Cause It's a long long journey Till I feel that I am worth the price You paid for me on calvary Beneath those stormy skies When Satan mocks and friends turn to foes It feel like everything is out to make me lose control Cause it's a long long journey Till I find my way home to you.to you

Long Journey Quotes

Standart top banner.

it's a long journey

Life is like unto a long journey with a heavy burden.

What do I believe? It has been a long journey of discovery. There have been hesitations and errors along the way, and no doubt will be more, because I am still learning, both about myself and about life.

Let your mind start a journey through a strange new world. Leave all thoughts of the world you knew before. Let your soul take you where you long to be. Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar, and you’ll live as you’ve never lived before.

I like someone who embraces life; who wants to be on a long journey but has no particular plan or destination in mind. An adventurous man, open to the concept of living life in the moment.

Some days are better than others ... It's been a long journey, but we're starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel now.

Let me recommend the best medicine in the world: a long journey, at a mild season, through a pleasant country, in easy stages.

It helps, I think, to consider ourselves on a very long journey: the main thing is to keep to the faith, to endure, to help each other when we stumble or tire, to weep and press on.

And you? When will you begin that long journey into yourself?

If seeds in the black earth can turn into such beautiful roses, what might not the heart of man become in its long journey toward the stars?

I wanted to do my part to help preserve that golden age of travel... I step aboard The Patron Tequila Express railcar, and I go back in time to the days when a long journey was something fun and very special.

A man knows his companion in a long journey and a little inn.

Respect your soul: don't keep repeating "I'm going to make it". Your soul already knows that, what it needs is to use the long journey to be able to grow, stretch along the horizon, touch the sky. An obsession does not help you at all to reach your objective, and even ends up taking the pleasure out of the climb. But pay attention: also, don't keep saying "it's harder than I thought", because that will make you lose your inner strength.

On a long journey of human life, faith is the best of companions; it is the best refreshment on the journey; and it is the greatest property.

I find I'm so excited I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head. I think it is the excitement only a free man can feel, a free man at the start of a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain. I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend, and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope.

For a small reward, a man will hurry away on a long journey; while for eternal life, many will hardly take a single step.

Education is a lifelong journey whose destination expands as you travel.

Does the road wind up-hill all the way? Yes, to the very end. Will the day's journey take the whole long day? From morn to night, my friend.

All writers are exiles wherever they live and their work is a lifelong journey towards the lost land.

The journey for women, no matter what venue it is - politics, business, film - it's, it's a long journey.

The best poems take long journeys. I like poetry best that journeys--while remaining in the human scale--to the other world, which may be a place as easily overlooked as a bee's wing

A cold coming we had of it, Just the worst time of the year For a journey, and such a long journey: The ways deep and the weather sharp, The very dead of winter.

It is impossible - now, at this point in the long journey of human culture - to avoid the sense that pain is necessity; that it is neither accident, nor malformation, nor malice, nor misunderstanding, that it is integral to the human character both in its inflicting and in its suffering, this terrible sense Tragedy alone has articulated, and will continue to articulate, and in so doing, make beautiful...

Climbing is my lifelong journey. And in the same way you go running and you have days where you really feel in tune, you have some days where you don't feel that good. It's this never-ending process. Accepting that and enjoying that for what it is, that's really where the life of climbing is.

By 2025 we expect new spacecraft designed for long journeys to allow us to begin the first ever crewed missions beyond the Moon into deep space. So we'll start by sending astronauts to an asteroid for the first time in history. By the mid-2030s I believe we can send humans to orbit Mars and return them safely to Earth. And a landing on Mars will follow and I expect to be around in see it.

it's a long journey

"A Long Journey" is a free verse poem by the Zimbabwean poet Musaemura Zimunya. Zimunya included "A Long Journey" in his book Country Dawns and City Lights , published in 1985—just five years after Zimbabwe attained independence from Britain. In “A Long Journey,” a Zimbabwean speaker describes the effects of industrialization and the complex changes that their village undergoes during British colonial rule, appreciating the many comforts and conveniences of modern life while also struggling with the immense legacy of suffering and violence that preceded it.

‘Long Day’s Journey Into Night’ Review: Patricia Clarkson Illuminates an Uneven West End Production

Long Day's Journey Into Night review Brian Cox Patricia Clarkson

No one, wisely, has turned “A Long Day’s Journey Into Night” into an opera — not least because, arguably, Eugene O’Neill’s most famous play already is one. It features extended solo arias mixing memory and pain, and, excluding the maid’s comedy high notes, the near-negligible plot operates as a vocal quartet. The job of the conductor — or, rather, the director — is to weave and build the sound to maximum dramatic effect. Led by Brian Cox (“ Succession ”) and Patricia Clarkson , Jeremy Herrin’s West End cast of soloists is definitely strong. Overall, however, his production doesn’t fully sustain the tricky balancing act.

Given the terrifying and delicious ease he deployed as vicious Logan Roy in “Succession,” Cox makes complete casting sense as tyrannical, self-serving James. At 77, he is a trifle old for the role, which latterly strains credulity when it comes to the physical relationship between him and his sons. But as his bravura final scene demonstrates, he is a commanding presence.

Descending, through drink and exhaustion, to the state that is the closest he ever gets to insight about his controlling, miserly failure with his family, Cox is in fine form in this scene. Furious at the truth-telling of his combative younger son Edmund (Laurie Kynaston) he allows us to see a man just about able — for brief moments only — to glimpse the truth of his own responsibility in the terrible family psychodrama.

But the slow-burn arc of the role isn’t quite within his grasp. His opening scene is pitched too high: The family is self-consciously acting happy now that matriarch Mary (Patricia Clarkson) is home and sober, but Cox’s overly-signaled brightness militates against audience engagement.

The consumption killing Kynaston’s nicely considered Edmund is, mercifully, underplayed. He gently indicates sadness without overstating it and in the final showdown with his father, his self-possession works in balance to his father’s chaos. But elsewhere, like most of the characters in this production except Louisa Harland’s beautifully judged, knowing maid, he seems too isolated, as if playing the end of the play from the beginning.

Neurasthenic, fluttering and fragile, Clarkson’s Mary positively glides through the day of the play with a sweetness that beautifully belies her pain within. Her level of denial is so absolute that she is able to maintain dignity throughout, no matter how upsettingly empty her illusions are.

Herrin knows about secrets and lies in dramas of addiction, having directed Duncan MacMillan’s scorching, award-winning “People, Places, Things.” Here, his pacing of Clarkson’s performance is the strongest line through this production. His handling of her final moments, ultimately placing her calmly sitting on the edge of the stage, is masterly.

Elsewhere, not all of his choices are helpful to so drawn-out a text. Lizzie Clachan’s self-consciously bald, wooden set over-emphasizes the lack of money that James gives to the running of a household. More of a statement than a helpful design, it leaves the creation of atmosphere to the actors and the lighting. Even a lighting designer as skilled as Jack Knowles struggles with the demand.

In a play that goes to some length to point out the intrusive sound of fog horns, it seems antithetical to have so noticeable an additional soundscape that loudly alerts the audience to approaching doom, or to the ethereal quality of Mary’s blissed-out-on-morphine state. This soundscape fires up some moments but flattens out the following scenes. The irony of this is that in so notoriously wordy a play, it’s absence and, crucially, silence which have proved so lethal in their lives.

The cumulative power of a still horribly recognizable journey through desperate, misplaced hope has ensured the longevity of O’Neill’s drama. Despite the unevenness of this production, Clarkson’s tender glow keeps it alive.

Wyndham’s Theatre, London; 780 seats; top £95 ($119), top premium £195 ($245). Opened, reviewed, Apr. 2, 2024; closing Jun 8. Running time: 3 HOURS, 30 MINS.

  • Production: A Second Half Productions presentation of a play in two acts by Eugene O’Neill.
  • Crew: Directed by Jeremy Herrin. Sets and costumes, Lizzie Clachan; lighting, Jack Knowles; music and sound, Tom Gibbons; movement, Polly Bennett, production stage manager, Laura Draper.

Etta may bradley.

This is the story of Etta May Bradley. She was my great-uncle's mother, and she seemed to live an interesting life, to say the least. She was taken to court at two different times to be tried for insanity, once by her father, and then by her husband. She disappeared with her five-year-old child for five months, Her relationships with her father and her stepmother appear to have been quite contentious.

Etta May Bradley was born on the 13th of July in 1868 in Bloomington, Illinois. She was the oldest of six children born to Sylvester and Jennie Motter Bradley.

In the 1870 Census for Bloomington taken on the 12th of July of 1870, Etta "Ettie" was listed as age three, living with her parents, a younger brother, and her uncle. Her father, Sylvester, and his brother (the uncle living with them) were listed as "Peddlers".   The following month (August 1870), Etta's younger brother William H. Bradly died. He was one year old.

Over the next ten years, three siblings to Etta were born: Bert Henry Bradley born in 1872, Cora Belle Bradley born in 1875, and Harry Bradley, born in 1877. All of them were born in Bloomington, Illinois. In the 1880 Census for Bloomington, "Ettie" was listed as twelve years old, living with her parents and three younger siblings. Her father, Sylvester Bradley, was listed as a "Lighting Rod Salesman".

In 1883, Etta's sister Daisy Alma Bradley was born.

Etta was listed in the Peoria, Illinois City Directory as living with her father at 606 W. Mouton in Peoria.  She was listed as "May Bradley".

Etta married William Nungester in May of 1890 in McLean County, Illinois. They were each twenty-one years old. They had a son in June of 1891 but sadly, he only lived for one month.

In the Monroe County Indiana Circuit Court in the December term of 1892 Etta stated that her husband had deserted her and did not leave sufficient provisions for her support. She asked for $500. It was also reported "That said plaintiff has no children but is now expecting to be delivered of a child in June 1893" and "That said plaintiff now resides with her father and is being cared for and supported by him."

In the Elkhart Daily News (Elkhart, IN) on December 7, 1892, the headline was TRIED TO GET RID OF HIS WIFE.   The article stated that William was trying to have his wife found insane. however, Etta was examined and found to not be insane. She was described as "24 years old, handsome, and has the appearance of being a girl of refinement and culture.",

In June of 1893, Etta and William did indeed have a baby, a daughter named Florence. In August of 1893, Etta's mother died.

It seems as if William and Etta divorced between 1893 and 1896, as William married Eliza Parker in 1896, probably in Ohio.

On the second of September of 1897 Etta's father, Sylvester Bradley, alleged that Etta was insane. His witnesses were Carrie Bradley, Catherine West, and Harry Bradley (Etta's stepmother, her step-grandmother, and Etta's brother). After the evidence was examined, Etta was found to not be insane.

An article from The Decatur Herald (Decatur, Illinois) Sunday, September 5, 1897, stated the following:

"Bloomington, Ill., September 4-After a bitterly fought trial in the probate court Etta Nungester was declared not insane. The case attracted unusual interest on account of the attractive appearance of the girl and the efforts made by her own father to have her placed in an asylum. Her father is a business man of this city and the daughter married against his will to a young man who proved to be worthless. He deserted his wife and child and Mrs. Nungester and her little one were forced to stay at the home of her father. She was tolerated for a time, but recently Bradley's wife, the stepmother of Mrs. Nungester began to make life disagreeable for the daughter. She refused to have her about, and the father decided to have his daughter adjudged insane, as the cheapest way to get rid of her. The poor girl was without money and the friends who rallied to her support were equally penniless. Without a lawyer to defend, the outcome of the case appeared dark.  Before the trial came off, however, Jacob Bohrer, assistant states attorney, learned of the facts in the case and agreed to defend her. His handling of the case was successful, and despite the great number of witnesses placed on the stand by the plaintiff the girl was freed. She was completely prostrated by the strain of the examination."

By the end of the month, the following article was written about Etta (found from 29 September 1897, Bloomington):

My great-grandfather, edward richard murphy.

I knew my great-grandfather, Edward Richard Murphy. I was ten years old when he died. It occurred to me that I was probably the only person living who remembers him. My sister was only one year old when Edward died. But then I remembered that I have a cousin who also has memories of him. So it is time that Edward is memorialized in this blog.

Edward Richard Murphy was born in Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois to William and Elizabeth Smyth Murphy on the 3rd of September 1880. The family was living at 1503 S. Adams St., in Peoria. Edward was the youngest of six children.

Between 1880 and 1882, the family moved from Adams St. to 311 Chicago St. in Peoria. Edward was two years old when his mother died giving birth to a stillborn baby girl. His mother's death left his father with six children at home to care for. In 1884 Edward's father remarried, a year after his wife Elizabeth's death. He married Anastasia Heneberry Cunningham who was a widow with six children.

In January of 1890, Edward's stepmother died. He was ten years old. Sadly, his father died in December of 1891. My guess is that the only real stability Edward had in his life during his younger years probably came from his siblings, most likely his sister who was ten years older than him.

Edward's only sister married in 1896. The first record I have of Edward following his birth record is from 1899 when he was listed in the Peoria City Directory as a clerk at SC Bartlett and resided at 1018 First St., where his sister, her husband, and their baby lived. Edward was listed in the 1900 Peoria Census with his brother Emmett. They were living with their sister and her family. Both were listed as Clerks at SC Bartlett Board of Trade.

In 1902, at the age of twenty-three, Edward married Kathryn "Kitty" Hanauer. She was twenty years old. Their witnesses were Edward's brother, Charles Murphy, and Katherine Lyons. In December of that year, Edward and Kathryn were witnesses to the marriage of Charles and Katherine's marriage!

In 1903, Edward and family were living at 211 Armstrong Ave. in Peoria, Illinois

Sometime in 1903-the family had moved to 521 Fredonia Avenue in Peoria, Illinois. The picture below is of a pregnant Kitty awaiting the arrival of their first child!

it's a long journey

Edward and Kitty's first son was Edward Francis Murphy who was born on the 20th of August in 1906 (my grandfather). He and Genevieve were listed in the 1910 Peoria Census with their parents. Edward was listed as a Clerk at the Board of Trade (he was still with SC Bartlett). The family was still living at 521 Fredonia in Peoria.

it's a long journey

By 1912, the family had moved to 121 Clarke Avenue in Peoria.  Edward was still working for SC Bartlett as a clerk. In 1918, he was listed as a Buyer for SC Bartlett.

it's a long journey

The 1918 WWI Draft Registration Card shows Edward listed at 121 Clark and was a Grain Dealer for SC Bartlett. Edward was marked as "Short" with blue eyes and black hair.

In 1920, the Peoria Census listed Edward, Kitty, Genevieve, and Edward along with Edward's mother-in-law Elizabeth Hanauer living at 121 Clark St. in Peoria. Edward was listed as a Vice-President for Stacy Grain. Elizabeth is listed as a Nurse (she was a midwife). On the 16th of October of 1920, Edward's brother Patrick Murphy died, the first of his siblings to pass away. Patrick was fifty-two years old. Edward was forty years old at the time.

March of 1921 brought a new addition to the family. Joseph Francis Murphy was born to Edward and Kitty! Edward was forty years old. Their children Genevieve and Edward were seventeen and fourteen years old, respectively. In 1924, another brother, Charles Murphy died.

1921 Edward R. Murphy holding his new son Joseph.

it's a long journey

In 1927, Edward and Kitty's son Edward married Mabelle Linnea Seeber. And the following year, their first grandchild was born, Patricia Genevieve. She was named after Edward's brother Patrick and his daughter Genevieve.

Edward turned fifty years old in 1930. The Peoria Census shows him living at 121 Clark Ave. in Peoria with Kitty, Genevieve, and Joseph. In 1931, Edward's oldest brother James Francis Murphy died. The 1930s brought more changes to Edward's family. Another grandchild, Edward Charles Murphy, was born in 1933.

Edward continued to work for SC Bartlett until 1936. At that time, Edward was listed as a grocer, living on Columbia Terrace.

However, The 1940 Peoria Census lists Edward as age 59 and employed as a Grain Dealer, Board of Trade, which indicates that he was still working for SC Bartlett. In this census, Kitty was listed as the proprietor of a grocery store.  It also showed Genevieve, age 36, as a secretary at a hotel (Pere Marquette Hotel). She had completed four years of high school. Joseph was listed as age 19 and had completed one year of college.

In 1942  Edward's WWII Draft Registration listed him as age 61, living at 901 Columbia. He was employed by Stacy Grain (which may have been SC Bartlett). Edward and Kitty's son Joseph's Draft Registration listed him as age 20, a student at the University of Illinois in Champaign Urbana, Illinois.

From 1943 to 1945 Joseph served overseas in the United States Air Force. "Joe" married Catherine Freeman in 1948. They briefly lived in Chicago, but by 1950 Joe and Cathy had moved to Indianapolis.

In 1944 Edward's sister Alice Murphy Cody died. She had dementia for several years and was kept at her home. I'm sure it was hard for Edward to lose her, the only mother figure he had known. He had two more brothers die, both in January of 1949. They were Robert Emmett Murphy and William Henry Murphy. Robert had spent the majority of his life in an institution in St. Louis. He was diagnosed with depression and dementia. Edward was then the only one of eight children left living.

Edward and Kitty were listed in the 1950 Peoria Census still living on Columbia Terrace in Peoria. It appears that Edward had retired. He was listed as age 69 and had a confectionary retail candy and ice cream store. Genevieve was still living with her parents. She was forty-six years old and an Executive secretary at a hotel (the Pere Marquette Hotel in downtown Peoria).

In 1952 Genevieve (age forty-eight) married Wayne Matheny (age thirty-six) who went by "Wayne West", his show name. He had popular shows on the radio and later became a popular  TV star in Peoria.

it's a long journey

I remember going to Edward and Kitty's little store on Columbia Terrace. It was attached to their home and next door to a grade school, so they often had many customers there. What I recall was the wonder of all the candy and ice cream. I was only five or six years old. And, of course, I was allowed to get whatever I wanted!

By 1955, Edward and Kitty were living in an upstairs apartment in the house where Genevieve and her husband lived. It was at 115 Samuel in Peoria Heights, Illinois. I have very clear memories of being there, but all I really remember of Edward (my great-grandfather) was of him sitting in a chair reading either a newspaper or a book. I also remember that he had a great smile! He was a very self-educated man and hated President Roosevelt. He was a very quiet man, small in stature.

Edward Richard Murphy died on the 12th of December 1959. He was seventy-nine years old.  His obituary stated that he had been "in failing health for about four years" and that he "had made his home for the last two years with his son, Edward F. Murphy". I was quite sure that this was untrue and so I sent for and received his death certificate. As I had recalled, he was in the Peoria State Hospital for two years and died there. My guess is that the family did not want it known that he had died there and thus changed the circumstances for the obituary.

Edward was survived by his wife, Kitty, his three children, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Sadly, his wife Kitty died in August of 1963 and his son Joe died in October of 1963. His son Edward died in 1976 and Genevieve died in 1992.

Alice "allie" reade, tuesday, april 25, 2023, what a sad story. jane mccandlish murdoch., sunday, april 23, 2023, old fashioned genealogy.

There are often mentions in different posts, blogs, etc. of the importance of writing and requesting records for genealogy.  Not all records can be found online, but you can find where to request the records that you are looking for online

This past week I sent off 3 different requests for records:

-One to the Arkansas History Commission for Confederate Pension Records for Thomas P Saunders

-One to the North Dakota Bismark-Mandan Historical and Genealogical Society for Naturalization Records for Olaus Hansson

-One to NARA for Land Warrants for two grants given to William Adamson, one in 1836 and the other in 1856

I was quite pleased with myself that I took the time to find where these records would be and that I actually sat down and requested them! I am very hopeful that I might learn some valuable and/or interesting information from my requests. I will post what I find!

Oops is a great topic and there are so many things to write about, but I am sharing the first thing that came to my mind!

it's a long journey

My father was born in 1927. His parents had married in 1910. They then had three children: in 1911, 1913, and 1915. And twelve years later...oops...my father was born!

My father's sister, who was born in 1913, would often recall how she would drop my father off at kindergarten on her way to college!

Joyner-Kersee embraces lessons learned on journey to athletic dominance

4-time olympian, 2-time ncaa champion reflects on athletic achievements and service to her community.

As world record holder Jackie Joyner-Kersee stepped onto the long jump runway for her final jump attempt at the 1996 Olympic Games, it felt like a full-circle moment. After having to withdraw from the heptathlon competition due to injury, she was sitting in sixth place in the long jump with an unlikely chance at earning a medal.

Jackie Joyner-Kersee receives the bronze medal in the long jump at her last Olympic Games in 1996.

Twelve years earlier, she faced a similar fate. Entering her first Olympic Games in 1984 battling injury, she recalls experiencing self-doubt and feeling like she would be unable to perform to the best of her ability in the heptathlon. It was during this competition that she learned that achieving success at a high level would require more than just physical fitness.

"I realized at that time that it takes more than just the physical (ability)," she said. "Mentally, you have to be all-in. I had never been injured before. I doubted my coaches, I doubted myself, and I didn't perform to the best of my ability. Leaving Los Angeles with the silver medal motivated me to go on and try to be one of the toughest athletes out there mentally moving forward."

This lesson proved to be a pivotal moment in Joyner-Kersee's career, as she returned to the Olympic Games in 1988 and 1992 and became the first woman to earn back-to-back gold medals in the heptathlon. However, Joyner-Kersee had begun breaking records and earning titles long before that.

Attending UCLA on a basketball scholarship, she was a highly successful two-sport student-athlete, earning All-America honors in basketball and back-to-back NCAA championship titles in the heptathlon in 1982 and 1983. A two-time collegiate record setter in track and field, she was awarded the 1985 Honda-Broderick Cup, presented to the country's most outstanding female collegiate athlete. Joyner-Kersee said competing in college prepared her to thrive at the Olympic level.

"Before you can become an Olympian, you're an Olympic hopeful, and it starts right at the collegiate level," she said. "You go up against some of the best athletes in the nation … and some come from all over the world to compete for different universities. So being able to have those competitions week in and week out, … it prepared you (to be) a strong competitor and not be afraid of going up against anyone."

Joyner-Kersee went on to become one of the most accomplished female athletes of all time. Named the greatest female athlete of the 20th century by Sports Illustrated, she won six Olympic medals during four Olympic Games: one gold and two bronze in the long jump, as well as two gold and one silver in the heptathlon. A four-time world champion, she is the current U.S. record holder in the outdoor long jump and indoor 50-meter hurdles and 55-meter hurdles, and her heptathlon world record of 7,291 points has remained untouched since it was set at the 1988 Olympics.

While her athletic prowess brought her all over the world for competition over the years, Joyner-Kersee never lost sight of the place where she first discovered her passion for track and field as a young girl. Born in East St. Louis, Illinois, Joyner-Kersee came from humble beginnings. Recognizing the unmet needs of the community as she got older, Joyner-Kersee became passionate about ensuring that every youth in her hometown was given the opportunity to achieve greatness.

In 1988, she established the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation to provide youth, adults and families in East St. Louis with the resources to improve their quality of life. The mission of the foundation is to provide children with the opportunity to "win in life" despite the challenging circumstances that come with growing up in the area.

By 2000, the foundation had raised over $12 million, which was used to build the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Center, a youth recreation center that offers programming in career development, health, life skills and arts. Although she boasts numerous athletic accolades, this work that hits close to home is what Joyner-Kersee truly hopes to be remembered for.

"What I hope my legacy will be is my work that I've always done in my community," she said. "Hopefully the legacy will be about the young people who come through the doors and (are) able to go out and talk about our community and what they were able to learn from the community as they're evolving, growing and becoming great human beings."

As a four-time Olympian, Jackie Joyner-Kersee earned six Olympic medals, including one gold in long jump and two golds in heptathlon

The foundation is just one example of how Joyner-Kersee has dedicated her life to serving others since retiring from athletic competition.

In 2007, she teamed up with several world-class athletes, including Muhammad Ali and Mia Hamm, to found Athletes for Hope, an organization designed to bring all types of athletes together to educate and inspire them to make a difference in the world through charitable causes.

Joyner-Kersee has also partnered with The Christian Activity Center and Intel Corp. to open computer clubhouses in her hometown, has spent time as a motivational speaker and has published two books: "A Kind of Grace" and "A Woman's Place Is Everywhere." Through her community work and her journey to achieving athletic greatness, Joyner-Kersee hopes to show young people that they can accomplish anything they desire if they have the drive and determination, regardless of where they may come from.

During her final attempt in the long jump at the 1996 Olympic Games, Joyner-Kersee showed just how important that drive and determination can be. In those moments, which would ultimately be the last of her Olympic career, she focused not on her injury but on fulfilling the promise she made to herself years earlier to always put her best foot forward and give it her all.

"I remembered what happened to me in 1984 and focused on coming down that runway, executing the run and then entering the pit," she said. "I think because my mindset was going for the win, I was able to come away with the bronze medal. And that medal is very important because it is a lesson learned years later."

This mental strength and resilience is a testament to Joyner-Kersee's remarkable journey both as an athlete and lifelong advocate. Now 28 years after that moment, she still strives to constantly put her best foot forward and remembers the life-changing experience of representing her country on the biggest stage while honoring the people and places that helped her reach success.

"What it (has) meant to me to represent my country four different times is indescribable," she said. "It's one of the greatest feelings in the world to be able to stand on top of the podium and see the flag going up. To hear the national anthem is a dream come true, not just for me, but for all of the people who believed in me and helped me get to that point."

Long Day's Journey into Night review: a 'challenging' play with 'superb' performances

Brian Cox gives a 'magnetic' performance as ageing actor James Tyrone

Brian Cox in Long Day's Journey into Night

In the ten years since Brian Cox last appeared on the London stage, he has "supercharged his fame", said Dominic Cavendish in The Telegraph – thanks to his TV role as Logan Roy, the domineering paterfamilias in Succession. It is apt, then, that he has now taken on "one of the mightiest father figures in the 20th-century American canon" – the ageing, bitter actor James Tyrone in Eugene O'Neill's autobiographical masterpiece.

It's a famously long and challenging play, said Nick Curtis in the Evening Standard . But Jeremy Herrin's production is "full of pathos and ruined grandeur", with uniformly superb performances. Cox is "magnetic as Tyrone, volcanic one moment, maudlin the next"; his "bombastic soliloquies" are "compelling".

This play is set over one day in 1912 in a rundown summer home in Connecticut, where James and Mary Tyrone and their two adult sons have convened, said Arifa Akbar in The Guardian . It's a "gruelling" experience, as "the family's points of weakness and pain" are revealed, but it's brought to vivid life by Herrin's "stark" production. Cox is "thrilling", but it's Patricia Clarkson as his "morphine fiend" wife who really shines, with a "true, infuriating, compassionate portrait of an addict". There's strong support from Laurie Kynaston as Edmund, a failed poet with tuberculosis, and Daryl McCormack as Jamie, a failed actor and drunk. "This is the ultimate family reckoning, with some light, but mostly shade."

Alas, the strong performances can't prevent "long-winded confrontations and confessions from slipping into melodrama", as O'Neill "grinds us into submission" over an "achingly slow" evening, said Clive Davis in The Times . The final scene of this "workmanlike" production, where Mary delivers a "crushingly poignant" speech, is desperately moving.

"But it's a long time a-coming." It's a pity this great play wasn't given a more innovative staging, said Andrzej Lukowski in Time Out . While the works of Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams have been much reinvented recently, O'Neill's seem resistant to change. This is a tender production, but something of "a museum piece".

Long Day’s Journey Into Night, Wyndham’s Theatre, 2024

Time Out says

Brian Cox stars in this tender take on Eugene O’Neill’s shattering masterpiece

Having signed his life over to a little show called ‘Succession’ for six years, Brian Cox is both making up for lost time and gleefully cashing in his move from ‘well-respected actor’ to ‘bona fide superstar’.

Last autumn he warmed up by starring as JS Bach in new play ‘The Score’ at Theatre Royal Bath. And now he returns to the West End for the first time in a decade to headline Eugene O’Neill’s masterwork ‘Long Day’s Journey Into Night’.

Hopefully he’s got a bit more in the tank after this, as despite a superb supporting cast, I’d say Cox doesn’t quite nail the role of James Tyrone, the patriarch of a disintegrating family, heavily based on O’Neill’s own dad (the playwright famously refused to allow the play be staged until after his death).

Cox is decent, but I found his performance diffused by the production: director Jeremy Herrin takes a typically forgiving view of the Tyrones, which pays off elsewhere, but I think blunts Cox’s James; a successful actor embittered by creative failure and his failure as a father and husband.

There‘s also another issue: fair or not, it’s hard to shake comparisons to Logan Roy - speaking in the same fruity brogue and in a role that’s very much about a father attempting to relate to his troubled sons who he himself has fucked up, there’s just something a bit… unhelpfu l about the resonance. The men are not the same: James is a frailer figure than the monstrous Logan (he certainly swears a lot less). But aspects of his Logan blur into his James and leave this character a bit lacking in definition. I think even a different accent would have helped.

He is still good, and his performance exerts more of a hold over the role as the play wears on, particularly the scene set in the quiet of the night when a tired James finally confesses his sense of failure to his son Edmund (Laurie Kynaston).

It is desperately sad

The warmer, more-generous-than-usual direction finds its best outlet in a superlative turn from US actor Patricia Clarkson as James’s wife Mary. She is a character who can come across as waspish and embittered, and rightly so.

But Clarkson has taken a different route: when she’s not loaded on pills, her Mary comes across like a sad, wise ghost. When she tells James that he never allowed their house to feel like a home, or when she brings up his past infidelities, she does so not to wound but to plaintively state the truth of her situation. Even when she’s unable to admit to her family that she is taking pills again, you can understand why she turns to them. She describes a lonely life shackled to James’s career, boxed in by her family’s concern for her, haunted by the death of her second son. When she sinks into a narcotic fug she’s still the same gentle woman, only she has briefly dissolved her unbearable present. It is desperately sad.

In a role that has somehow been recast twice since this production was announced, Kynaston is very solid as a peppy Edmund - his boyishness hasn’t been ruined by booze and bitterness; he’s the most vital member of this moribund family; we believe he might overcome his illness. I liked Daryl McCormack in the smaller-but-vital role of older brother Jamie – he brings a plain-spokenness to the part, and a palpable sense of love and care for Kynaston’s Edmund. Even when he drunkenly admits his darkest thoughts, there’s the sense he’s only doing so because he wants to protect his little brother. There’s also a lovely turn from Louisa Harland as the Tyrones’s sparky Irish maid Cathleen – she’s funny, but moreover, she’s undamaged; there’s something soothing about her brief appearances, a reminder the whole world isn’t as messed up as this family.

Herrin’s warm approach works a little better here than it did with his recent revival of ‘The Glass Menagerie’: it is key to O’Neill’s magnum opus that the Tyrones love each other deeply, regardless of what a disaster they have made of it.

Still, I’d like to see a bit more daring than a tweak to the acting next time this play is revived. This is the third ‘Long Day’s Journey’ to hit the West End in 12 years, and none have exactly been formally wild. There’s some nifty sound design here from Tom Gibbons – sepulchral fog horns, and subtler ambient sounds – but mostly this is a very straight production. It remains a truly great play, perhaps the greatest American play of them all, but while the masterworks of O’Neill’s peers Miller and Williams have proven ripe for dramatic reinvention in recent years, ‘Long Day’s Journey Into Night’ seems curiously resistant. It’s a daunting play, yes, but it shouldn’t be a museum piece.

Andrzej Lukowski

Russ Cook reacts after becoming the first person to run the entire length of Africa.

‘I’m a little bit tired’: Briton becomes first person to run the length of Africa

Russ Cook from Worthing reaches Ras Angela, Tunisia, after covering more than 9,900 miles in 352 days

After more than 9,940 miles (16,000km) over 352 days across 16 countries, Russ Cook, aka the “Hardest Geezer”, has completed the mammoth challenge of running the length of Africa .

The 27-year-old endurance athlete from Worthing, West Sussex, crossed the finish line in Tunisia on Sunday afternoon, and planned to celebrate with a party – as well as a strawberry daiquiri – having raised more than £600,000 for charity.

His achievement, believed to be the first person to run tip to tip from southern to northern Africa, was the more extraordinary given several setbacks including a robbery at gunpoint in Angola, being held by men with machetes in Republic of the Congo, health scares and visa complications.

On 22 April 2023 he set off from South Africa’s most southerly point, Cape Agulhas. By the time he crossed the line at Tunisia’s most northerly point, Ras Angela, he had run the distance of about 376 marathons.

Cook was accompanied on the final leg by supporters who had flown out after following his journey on social media, as he documented his odyssey on X, Instagram and YouTube, with posts amassing millions of views.

He finished to cheers of “Geezer, Geezer” and took a well-deserved dip in the sea, telling Sky News: “I’m a little bit tired.”

On the eve of his final leg, Cook told Sky News: “It’s quite hard to put into words: 352 days on the road, long time without seeing my family, my girlfriend, my body is in a lot of pain but one more day, I’m not about to complain.”

Money raised will go to the Running Charity , which provides running and mental health programmes to young people experiencing homelessness and complex needs, and Sandblast , which promotes awareness of the Saharawi people.

During Cook’s feat he ran through rainforests, across mountain ranges and traversed the Sahara. On day 200, he reduced his daily mileage on doctors’ advice in Nigeria. “I took a couple of days to get some scans. No bone damage so figured the only option left was to stop mincing about like a little weasel, get the strongest painkillers available and zombie stomp road again,” he said at the time.

Visa problems getting into Algeria were overcome after his appeal video on X was seen by 11 million people and the Algerian embassy in the UK announced he would be given a courtesy visa.

He was due to celebrate with a finish-line party at a hotel in Bizerte, Tunisia. “Get your daiquiris ready, girls and boys, this is gonna be mega,” he wrote.

Before setting off on his challenge, Cook revealed he wanted to make a difference, saying: “I’m a totally normal bloke, so if I can do this, hopefully people can apply this to their own lives in whichever way they choose. For 99% of people, it’s not going to be running across Africa, but it might look like chasing their dreams a little bit more.”

He has called the challenge “the toughest in my life but an immense honour”, adding: “We have met incredible people in every single country we’ve been to that have welcomed us with love and kindness. The human spirit is a beautiful thing.”

after newsletter promotion

Cook is not new to challenges: previous ones have included running from Istanbul to London, being buried alive for a week, and the fastest marathon pulling a car.

Alex Eagle, a friend and the co-founder of the Running Charity, where Cook worked as an adventure coach for young people before embarking on Project Africa, told the Guardian when Cook first suggested the African odyssey, “obviously it was outlandish, but we all thought he could do it”.

“He is a determined man, and he’s a man that has overcome things like a lot of the young people that we work with have overcome difficult challenges in their lives,” he added.

Eagle did worry at times for Cook going into the unknown, but whenever they spoke he was “positive, always positive, always one step ahead in the moment, really grateful for the experience, really grateful for the people he’s met … That is his personality.”

“If you are squeamish, the images of his feet are quite horrific at times,” Eagle added. Of the challenges, he said: “The scale of it. You hear it, but you don’t really comprehend it. He’s just consistently been able to bring his mind to it, to get up every day and do that. It’s just awe-inspiring.”

The charity plans a group run on his return and Cook will also be running the London Marathon with young people from the charity. “I think that will be a walk in the park for him,” Eagle said.
