Wilstem Wildlife Park Drive Thru Safari in Indiana

If you enjoy up-close experiences with animals, then put Wilstem Drive Thru Wildlife Park on your must-do list. We visited last week, and our ride through this wildlife park in southern Indiana was nothing short of amazing!

Where is Wilstem Wildlife Park?

Wilstem Wildlife Park (aka Wilstem Ranch) is located in Paoli, Indiana , which is about 2 hours south of Indianapolis. We have visited Wilstem in the past for their giraffe and elephant encounters, and we were blown away by those experiences. In the summer of 2020, Wilstem announced the opening of their new drive thru safari, so we knew we needed to head south ASAP.

What animals do you see on the drive thru safari?

You can see up to 30 different species of animals on the drive thru safari. Obviously, just like when on a real safari or visiting a zoo, you may not see all of the animals. Factors like time of day, weather, and roaming patterns may affect who you see. On our safari, we saw, fed, and/or interacted (like they stuck their heads in our windows!) with the following animals:

• Texas Longhorns
• Aoudads (African sheep)
• Fallow Deer
• Alpacas or Llamas (I don’t know the difference. Maybe both?)

At Wilstem, there are basically 3 sections to the current drive thru experience:

• In the first section, you can feed any of the animals that you see. We fed longhorns, emus, donkeys, and alpacas/llamas. 
• In the second section, you roll your windows up and cruise through the bison area. 
• In the third section, the animals are inside pens right next to the road. Here, you drive by the zebras (can’t feed those guys or they’ll eat your hand off), camels (they love carrots), and goats. 

What is the cost?

We opted to purchase the self-guided drive thru tickets and take our own vehicle through the park. These are general admission tickets that you can use any time from 9:00am EST until 4:00pm EST on the day you choose. The self guided non-refundable drive thru tickets can be purchased online . Currently, the prices are:

• $15 per adult +$2 processing fee
• $13 per senior adult (65+) +$2 processing fee
• $10 per child (3-12) +$2 processing fee
• Free for 2 and under

  If you don’t feel comfortable driving your own car through the safari, you can purchase guided wagon or safari bus tickets for a specific time and day. These non-refundable tickets can be purchased online . Currently, the prices for these tickets are:

• $25 per adult +$2 processing fee
• $23 per senior adult (65+) +$2 processing fee
• $20 per child (3-12) +$2 processing fee

What else is included in the ticket price?

Your family will be given animal food prior to entering the park.The food is included with the ticket price. Also, if you  want, you can visit the Roos and Crews Encounter to see even more animals! Inside the Roos and Crews barn, you’ll find:

• African Gray Parrots
• Ring Tail Lemurs
• Japanese Silkie Chickens

Can we feed the animals?

Yes! When you get to the gate, you will be given animal food and an explanation of who you can feed. You cannot feed the animals any outside food.

Can we maintain social distance during this experience?

Yes! If you purchase online tickets for the drive thru safari and take your own car through the park, then the only person you will encounter will be the “ticket taker” at the entrance booth. That person will also give you the animal feed. 

If you decide to go inside the Roos and Crews barn, depending on how busy they are, you might have some trouble maintaining social distance. However, when we visited on a Monday in early July of 2020, all workers were wearing masks and most guests were as well. We had no problem maintaining distance between us and other guests inside the barn. There were also hand washing and sanitizing stations available. 

What else can we do at Wilstem Wildlife Park?

There is so much to do here. As I mentioned, we have experienced and LOVED the elephant and giraffe encounters, and we hope to go back soon to see the grizzlies. They even have special VIP encounters, including a “ Spa Encounter ” with the elephants where you can give them a bath! How fun does that sound?! Here’s all that’s available at Wilstem Ranch:

Do they have any human food?

Wilstem does sell a few snacks and drinks in their gift shop. They also have a picnic area that you can use if you bring your own lunch. You’ll also be close to Paoli and French Lick, so you can drive into one of those towns for food.  

I cannot stress enough how much fun we had on our drive thru safari at Wilstem Wildlife Park. We all laughed and smiled the whole time. We cannot wait to go do it again!

Adventure Awaits At This Drive-Thru Safari Park In Indiana

Okay, so maybe people don’t immediately think of epic adventures when they think about Indiana – but maybe they should. Hear us out – as any born-and-bred Hoosier would probably know, Indiana is a place full of all kinds of shenanigans to get into, as long as you know where to look. Indiana Landmarks’ new Indy  Downtown  Indy  Safari  explores the stone and metal “wildlife” in architecture and sculpture throughout the Mile Square, including bears, bison, frogs, and fish — even some mythical beasts.

The 45-minute family-friendly tour includes playful activities and stories about the symbolism behind the magnificent creatures. At the end of the tour, families receive a list of ideas to spark creativity and reinforce what they’ve learned.

WHAT: Indy  Downtown   Safari

WHEN: Saturday, July 31, every 30 minutes from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tours are accessible to all and run rain or shine.

WHERE: Tours depart from University Park, 307 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis

COST:    $5 per person (ages 6 and up), $3 per Indiana Landmarks member (ages 6 and up). Children ages 5 and under are free.

Rides AND slides - we must be in Holiday World & Splashin Safari ! Located in the very festive sounding Santa Claus, Indiana, this family owned amusement and water park combo is filled with a LOT of fun - no matter what age!

There are sweet rides such as the playful Dancers Fish, which spins those little ones around and around, or they can bounce gently up and down on their very own seahorse carousel. There are fun play areas for them to climb and hide, and even mini Tippecanoes where they can take to the water and cool off on those summer months!

Mini tea cups, little cars that take them on historic trails, and fun splash pads to play in are all waiting for those younger family members at Holiday World and Splashin Safari!

But what about those older kids? They have you covered too! You can feel your stomach DROP on the free fall Reindeer Games ride, or brave the Raging Rapids with the whole family on your very own "tube".

Feel the real weight of gravity on the very SPINNING Revolution, or brave The Raven!

Splashin’ Safari features numerous family raft rides, two wave pools, plus water activities for children. It’s an architectural adventure for the whole family! Guided safari explores wildlife in architecture and sculpture around downtown Indianapolis. Tours start at 10 a.m., 10:15 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 11:45 a.m. During a 45-minute guided safari, tourgoers will explore animals in architecture and sculpture in downtown Indianapolis. Discover the stories and symbolism of the creatures and how they connect to the city’s history. Then, complete the experience with take-home activities. Tours depart from University Park, 307 N. If you're looking for the best zoos and botanical gardens in the country, you don't have to go far. Florida has you covered.

Every year, USA TODAY's 10Best Reader's Choice Awards pick the top... well, many, many things, in the nation. Expert panels select the best in the U.S. and then readers across the nation cast their votes. And several Florida destinations made the grade in the top 10 lists for best zoos , best botanical gardens and best safari parks . Here's how we placed.

10 Best Zoos in the US : No. 6, Brevard Zoo

Now in its 30th year, the Brevard Zoo in Viera near Melbourne made the 10Best list of best zoos in the country at No. 6. It was the only zoo in Florida recognized and Florida has a strong zoo game.

This is also the fifth year in a row the Brevard Zoo has been nominated for the USA Today 10Best Reader’s Choice Award.

“Home to more than 900 animals,  the AZA-accredited Brevard Zoo takes the zoo-going experience to adventurous new levels. Guests can zip-line through the jungles of South America or kayak through the African savanna or a restored Florida wetland," the 10Best experts said.

Guests also can feed giraffes, walk among kangaroos and ostriches, take a train ride through exhibits, pet goats or just relax at the kids' splash area. In addition to daily admission,  the zoo also hosts summer camps,  homeschool and preschool classes as well as family experiences. Brevard was also listed in U.S. News and World Report's list of "26 Best Zoos in the U.S " for 2023.

10 Best Botanical Gardens in the US: No. 2, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden

Second only to the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden was the second-best in the country.

"The warm climate of Coral Gables allows tropical plants to be grown outdoors year-round at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden," 10Best said in the nomination, "one of the only places in the continental United States where this is possible. Exotic butterflies fly freely within the Wings of the Tropics exhibit, while the Tropical Plant Conservatory and Rare Plant House displays 450 species of rare and endangered tropical plants from around the globe. Other themed gardens include a Tropical Fruit Collection, Palm Glade, Tropical Flower Garden, Succulent Garden, and even a display of the dry forest plants of Madagascar.

Named after horticulturist David Fairchild, the man who introduced mangos, pistachios and nectarines to the United States, Fairchild Garden opened in 1938 to study and preserve tropical plants. There are plants there you won't see anywhere else, birds and butterflies everywhere, seasonal exhibits such as Jurassic Garden and the sunset jazz series Rhythm & Blooms , classes, plants for sale and even rare plant auctions through eBay.

"Specializing in epiphytes, particularly orchids, bromeliads, and ferns, Florida's Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is globally recognized for its research and conservation efforts focused on epiphytic plants," 1-Best experts said. "Situated along the scenic Sarasota Bayfront, the lush, 15-acre gardens are located at the former home of William and Marie Selby. A second location, the Historic Spanish Point campus, is located on Little Sarasota Bay in Osprey and focuses on local history and plant life."

The beautifully curated gardens offer a wide range of tropical plants and exhibits. In January of this year the garden began an ambitious plan to expand, modernize, and to create a stormwater purification and solar energy plant on site, making the campus the first-ever net-positive botanical garden complex in the world. 10 Best Safari Parks in the US: No. 7, Lion Country Safari

"Palm Beach may be far away from the wilds of Africa, but it’s also home to Florida’s largest drive-through safari, the AZA-accredited Lion Country Safari," 10Best said. "Established in 1967, this safari park invites visitors to observe and interact with nearly 1,000 animals divided between seven sections. Guests might spot storks, wildebeest, and impalas on the Serengeti Plains, observe a pride of lions in Gorongosa Reserve, or see giraffes and endangered rhinos in Hwange National Park."

Visitors to Lion Country Safari can see over 89 species from boa constrictors, endangered white rhinoceros (with a recent increase of two n ew calves) and even a zebu, a horned cattle species with a hump and drooping ears. There are also guided kayak tours and ziplining available, and you can watch animals from the land, from the water or aboard a train.

Lion Country was up from last year's No. 8 ranking and made   U.S. News and World Report's list of "26 Best Zoos in the U.S " for 2023.

Learning Safari

Your students will be wildlife explorers during this 45-minute guided tour. Led by a Zoo educator, Learning Safaris use the Zoo as a learning laboratory, stopping at various animal habitats to observe wildlife and engage in student exploration activities. Choose from one of three Safari themes:

• Wildlife Adaptation Safari
• Zoo Habitat Safari
• Animal Behavior Safari

Tours are offered Monday–Friday at 10am & noon.

Cost : $10 per student. One chaperone (no cost) is required for every 10 students. Additional adults are $10 each. Cost does not include Zoo admission. Minimum 10 participants, maximum 40 per session. You will be required to finalize the number of participants for this program 2 weeks in advance, as space is limited.

Payment : Your school will be invoiced for the cost of the program, along with your field trip admission, after your visit.

Your students will really roar about their field trip when it includes a behind-the-scenes tour to learn more about how the Zoo cares for animals! A Zoo educator will lead your group on a 45-minute visit to the Polly Horton Hix Animal Medical Center and the Zoo’s Commissary. You’ll see inside the Zoo’s working veterinary clinic and kitchens to hear stories of how Zoo staff care for many different animals every day.

Participants of this tour must be at least 6 years old.

Tours are offered Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 11am.

Cost: $15 per person (all students, teachers, chaperones). One chaperone is required for every 10 students. Cost does not include field trip admission. Minimum 10 participants, maximum 40 per session. The final number of participants is required at the time of reservation, and reservations must be made 4 weeks in advance.
