I would also be interested in any info on A & E Tours. We are considering them for our March cruise. We wanted Mandoo, but he was already booked and we would have to go with one of his guides. Has anyone ever used Mandoo but went out with one of his guides. All of the positive feedback I have read is for Mandoo personally.

Thanks fo any help,

Fran, let me know how you make out if you use them, we're booked with them for April. I've been conversing with Agnes and she has answered all of my questions promptly and they seem very willing to accomodate all of our needs. I did read on these boards a long time ago some good things and one bad review but I haven't seen any info lately.

  • 2 weeks later...

We have booked A&E's "Best of Nature" tour for Feb 16th when we are in Grenada on the Lirica. Agnes has always been very prompt to respond and very helpful with our questions. At $30 per person for a four hour tour that is about 1/2 of what the cruise ship is charging. The itinery seems to include everything we are interested in seeing. I will post again after our return as to how everything went.

Bob7

A & E Tours caught our eye too, the Best of Nature Tour for $28 looks great, we like to hike and walk around (that way you get double desserts at dinner), and hitting Concord, Grand Etang, and Annadale would be great. They also offer a hike to Seven Sisters waterfalls for $16, but don't know how long it is. We go in March, anyone going before please post your experiences!

We toured with A&E last October and had a good time. We had originally signed up for the "Best of Nature Tour," but wound up with a modified tour....with our approval.

When we arrived at the port, Eddie and Andrew from A&E were waiting for us. They had a sign with my name and the name of another couple on our ship who were also part of our Cruise Critic group. The other couple never showed up. We waited and waited and looked all over the place for them. Eddie held off the tour for a while because he said he had given his word and did not want to disappoint them. After an hour, we gave up on them.

In the meantime, some other people came along looking for something to do, and we helped convince them to go with us for a tour. Eddie asked me whether we were intent in specifically doing the "Best of Nature Tour," and I told him we just wanted a nice sightseeing tour and would leave it up to him to show us highlights of the island. I have been on so many of the islands, and frankly they are all starting to look alike to me, so I am happy to just sit back and relax and try to imagine what it would be like living there.

It was a nice day. The van was comfortable, and Eddie and Andrew were able to answer any questions we had about their history or life on the island. They are really nice guys and very low key. And you just can't beat the price when you consider what it costs for sightseeing on some of the other islands. I would go with them again.

Oh yes....when we arrived at one of the popular tourist stops with several other vans and guides....who walked by but the other couple from our CC group who were supposed to be on our tour.....the ones we waited for. They were there with another tour group. Neither of us had the heart to tell Eddie, but we were angry with them for being so rude and inconsiderate. Sometimes all you hear on these boards are the shortcomings of the tour people, but they also get their share of problems with the cruisers.

Thanks Tricia724,

It seems like you had a nice time. Thank you for taking the time to post. It helps with the anxiety pangs. I am looking forward to dealing with A & E based on your post. They have offered us (a group of 4) a modified version of the "Best of Nature Tour" and it sounded good so we booked it. We enjoy taking private tours occasionally. They tend to be less hectic and we can talk with the guide without competing with 45 other people. We used Port Compass to book tours on our cruise to South America. We tried both private and group tours with them. Even their group tours were not very big, the max was 18 and that was the tour that dropped us off at the airport afterward.

Thanks Again,

interested do you have a link?

Tricia thx also for your informative post.

Fran we booked A & E for March too, the 15th, are we before or after you? Agnes was very thorough and prompt at emailing, and gave us also a custom tour similar to the Best of Nature Tour. We doing the Annadale waterfall, and the half hour hike around the Circle Trail at Grand Etang Park Lake, and then the half hour hike to the first of the 7 Sisters Falls (St. Margaret), for $120 for 4 ppl. Carib Horizons wanted $180 for the same thing. We wanted to do Concord falls as well but it's too far so we dropped it. Nice that they provide snacks, water, and fruit juice. I wonder if some rum ever gets spilled in it too? .... we just might be thristy.

What modifications did you make to your tour?

P.S. Dis2, their site is: http://www.grenadaguide.com/aetours and their email is:

oh, and here's a great map showing the attractions, better than the one the tourism office sends:

http://www.skyviews.com/grenada/grenadamap.html

thanks bob for the link. I emailed a & e and hopefully they will have room for us. We are a family of 4 and will be there in about 2 1/2 weeks, now I only one more port to figure out. I need a vacation from all this planning lol!!

  • 4 weeks later...

We did A&E's "Best of Nature" tour on Feb. 16th and thought they were wonderful. My husband and I prefer to make plans in advance. We don't like to go to a port and try to negotiate a price and destinations with someone off the street. We like knowing with whom were are dealing. I read several good reviews of A&E on Cruise Critic and decided to contact them. Agnes was very prompt with her replies and confirmation of our tour. We were greeted inside the cruise terminal, then escorted outside to a very clean, air-conditioned van that easily accommodated 6 of us (3 seperate groups of 2) with room to spare. Tristan, our driver/guide, was friendly, knowledgeable, easily understood, and gladly answered questions we had. He also made us feel comfortable with his expert driving ability on the narrow roads. Our tour had more stops than a similar one offered by the cruise at 1/3 less cost. We felt safe and got an excellent tour at a good price. We would use them again and recommend them to anyone else going to Grenada.

Thanks farjar for the update - Agnes has been prompt and very helpful, and we are looking forward to this tour. We are just hoping they don't change our itinerary now since the Dawn is having propulsion problems.

We toured with A&E just last week and have to say that Grenada was one of our favourite islands on the cruise. It was a "Family Affair" tour with Eddie the driver and his father David in the back of the van; oh and Eddie's son was the nice looking fellow holding the sign inside the cruise terminal. We went to Annandale falls, Grand Etang, and had a spice tour as well as a stop atop of the hill overlooking St George for photo ops. They were informative, colourful, and definitely proud of their island. David added interesting info about island life while Eddie pointed out interesting landmarks along the way and even stopped to show us the various fruit and fragrant flowers that grow in abundance on this lush island. Definitely worth the price....they also were very flexible with what we wanted to see during our time in port.

Keener and others,

We will be in Grenada May 1 on Crown Princess and I'm wondering how long was your tour? We are only in port from 9 A to 2P so anything longer than 3 hours might be a problem. What was the cost per person in US$'s? If you could only visit 2 sites, what would they be? Thank you.

We used A & E when we were in Grenada on March 6th (also the Crown Princess). The tour was very nice. We hand a modified version of their Best of Nature Tour. It lasted right around 3 hours. They picked us up right at shopping area at the peir and dropped us off at the same place after ther tour was over. Everyone we delt with was considerate and informative. We were impressed because I have mobility issues and at Grand Etang Park Lake, instead of hiking the Circle as we saw others doinf, we were driven right up to the dock and gazebo area. I think for the money, this is a very worthwhile tour.

The cost was $30.00 per person. Athough Agnes told us this included all fees etc., we were asked for an additional $2.00 per person entracne fees at the lake.

Our two favorite places to visit on the tour were Annandale Falls and the fort (my husband is a history buff).

Hope you have a great trip.

We took A & E Tours a couple weeks ago, and it was great. We booked a private custom half day tour for $30 p.p. for 4 people. The ship tour was twice that for fewer sights. We arranged to go to the Annadale Falls, then the Seven Sisters Falls (first 2 of 7 only), the Grand Etang Lake National Park. Eddie our driver was excellent, helpful, and informative. Annadale was pretty, only a 2-3 minute easy walk from the parking on a cement path. You can get down on the boulders at the bottom for some good shots, with your partner standing above on the view deck.

Hiking to the 7 Sisters is much harder, a lot of steps and tricky footing around rocks, up and down steep paths. Nice pool to take a dip in under the falls.

Grand Etang Lake is easy walking. Eddie had some bread, we ripped pieces off, held them between our fingers, lay on the wooden dock, (stomped on the dock first to attract the fish), the shook the bread pieces in the surface of the water, and tons of little fish came up to eat the bread from our fingers. This would be great fun for kids. Tell them they’re man-eating phyranna. Some big orange Koi fish may also come up. Eddie had free refreshments, juice and granola type bars. A and E Tours has a good web site, Google should pop it up.

In the afternoon we had planned to take a $2 water taxi over to Grand Anse beach, but after lunch on the ship and doing the internet in town and some shopping, time was running out. Shopping not great here, save your money for St. Thomas and Martinique.

Here's a shot of the great view of the harbour as you head up in the mountains toward the falls and the national park. You can see the ship at the dock:

And hers's a shot of 3 of us and our fearless leader Eddie pointing the way on the trail to the 7 Sisters Falls:

And here's a shot of me waving from the 2nd of the 7 Sisters Falls. There is a nice pool at the base for taking a dip:

We took an A and E tour last week and I would say it was one of the best island tours we've ever taken. For $35 pp, we visited the spice factory, Annadale Falls, Grand Etang, and a beach, but the tour was so much more than that. Eddie took us to several scenic overlooks that had great views. He gave everyone (there were 8 of us) time to take pictures. He stopped several times to pick various fruits or plants, then told us a lot of information about them. When we spotted some monkeys, he pulled over and gave everyone a chance to see them and take pictures. When we stopped at the beach, he took us to a more private area and gave us quite a bit of swim time. Eddie was fun, informative, and easy going. He made sure everyone was given the opportunity to see and do what they wanted. I think the tour lasted about 5 or 6 hours. I don't know when I've ever had a more accomodating host and I strongly recommend A and E to anyone who wants a great tour for a great price!

Thank you for posting about A & E. A group of us from the Crown Princess on 4/28 have recently booked with them. I'm so glad they did a good job for you.

I think you will be very pleased with this tour. I wish we were going back there with you! Have a great cruise!

We took the half-day "Spices" tour in late March with Eddie, and had a great time! If you enjoy lots of information, including hands-on experiences, you'll like this. He went far out of his way to give us as much history, spices info, cultural stuff, etc. as we wanted.

Eddie also stopped off at a beach at tour's end, which was unexpected -- and wonderful. We laid on the beach, jumped the waves, and really enjoyed ourselves.

Plan to be accosted at certain points by various island people wanting you to buy something, let them sing you a (weird) song, take their pictures (especially women wearing fruit headdresses a la Carmen Miranda). It helps to remember that these people have been badly hit by hurricanes in the recent past, and many of their primary exports -- the spice trees -- are still not up and bearing yet. (They take up to 7 years.) They back off nicely if you're polite and say no.

Went with this company in DEC. 05. Was suppose to have been a best of nature private tour. Things went bad from the start

1) They give our tour to another couple

2) We had all the Email from them and they tried to say that we did not have a tour with them This took an hour to correct.

3)took us to a van where we waited for another hour. Then we played mucical vans we were in a total of four vans and never got out of the parking lot.

4)Asked if we were willing to share a van with another group Said yes Big mistake. going to first site The Lake the other group said that they did not want to see the sites just wanted to visit the fort and the beach

5)At the beach met with someone from the main office who claimed to be looking for us to get us back on our requested tour We were five hours into our stay. We were so mad that we asked to be return to the ship. Was informed that we would get a refund (Still waiting for it). did not get anything to drink or eat.

6) At the pier was asked to pay for the tour we were on. We per paid for the private tour

7)Over the next three months we kept getting demands for payment thru the mail and on E-mail.

Good luck if you are going thru with a tour with them. Unless they have change thier ways BEWARE!!!!!!

So sorry you had such a bad experience. While reading your post, I can hardly believe this is the same company we recently had such an awesome tour with. Perhaps in the last year and a half they have really mended their ways because this tour truly was one of the best we've ever had (and we've had a lot of really great tours over the 18 years we've been traveling.)

Has anyone used A&E recently? Would be interested in your feedback. We are on the Crown in November and only there from 9a - 2p. I'm a little worried about making a independent tour fit to our schedule and really don't want to risk missing the ship. That said, I much prefer the smaller groups that the big crowds of the ships excursions.

If you've used them, let me know if they were on time, and conscientious of getting everyone back to the ship when scheduled.

Has anyone used A & E Tours lately. Thinking of booking them for our cruise in February and would like your feedback.

Joanandjoe

No bad, no ugly. For about $28 per person, I had a nice tour with a fort, the tasting bar at a rum factory, and lots of views of a beautiful island. We used them last week off the Wind Surf. My wife did something much more exciting: the ship's river tubing tour.

12 BEST Tours in La Fortuna, Costa Rica

This blog may contain affiliate links. Read our disclosure policy for more info.

If you love wildlife and outdoor adventures, then La Fortuna is hands down one of the best places to visit in Costa Rica .

In fact, we loved La Fortuna so much that we moved here! When we lived here, we had so much fun exploring its waterfalls, caves, and rainforests, as well as doing epic adventures like canyoning, hiking the base of the Arenal Volcano, and taking on some of the best whitewater rafting in Costa Rica !

Basically, La Fortuna is a paradise for those who are outdoor enthusiasts, as some of the best tours in Costa Rica are located right here! Whether you want to take a night walk through the rainforest to spot wildlife, go ziplining , or explore on an ATV, there are a ton of incredible tours in La Fortuna.

We’ve narrowed it down to our top 12 tours to help you decide what you want to get up to in La Fortuna so that you’ll enjoy this amazing place as much as we did!

Best overall tour of La Fortuna:

Best adventure tour:, best wildlife tour:, why book a tour in la fortuna, 1. full-day arenal volcano, la fortuna waterfall, and hot springs , 2. balsa river whitewater rafting, 3. hanging bridges, la fortuna waterfall, and arenal volcano hike, 4. canyoning and waterfall rappelling tour, 5. specialty coffee and chocolate tour, 6. ziplining, 7. sloths watching tour through sloth’s territory, 8. mistico park hanging bridges guided tour, 9. atv tour, 10. full-day rio celeste tour from la fortuna, 11. rainforest night walk and authentic costa rican dinner, 12. venado caves underground experience.

  • Other Activities to do While You're in La Fortuna

Selina La Fortuna – $

Casa luna hotel & spa – $$, the springs resort & spa at arenal – $$$, renting a car, book shuttles, our top picks for tours in la fortuna.

Canyoning in Jaco

If you don’t have time to read the entire blog, we’ve got you covered with our top tours to choose from. Consider them the best of the best!

To see all the highlights La Fortuna has to offer, this full-day tour is one you can’t pass up! You’ll see (and swim at!) the stunning La Fortuna Waterfall before visiting a butterfly garden and hiking to the base of Arenal Volcano. Finishing off the day at some of the famous natural hot springs really is the cherry on top. It’s insanely good value too at $91 USD per person including all fees, lunch, and transportation. It was so good, we would book this exact tour again!

If you’re craving a bit of adventure in La Fortuna, this action-packed tour is for you! The first stop is climbing up a secret canyon before you strap in and tackle a rappelling course including a zipline. The best parts are the four waterfall descents where you actually rappel through the water! The tour is fun for the whole family with ages 5 and up welcome and the $119 USD cost includes hotel transfers and lunch when you book online here .

Seeing sloths in the wild is actually pretty challenging – they really blend in! We opted for this sloth-watching tour to an area near La Fortuna called Sloth’s Territory. Spoiler alert: There are lots of sloths here! But you can spot plenty of other creatures including frogs, hummingbirds, and parrots! The small group tour is capped at 10 people and we learned a ton from our guide. It’s only $35 USD, so book the tour here and cross seeing a sloth in Costa Rica off your bucket list!

La Fortuna main plaza and church with Arenal Volcano in the background

We find booking tours in La Fortuna makes exploring the area so much easier. There are some public bus services or shuttles in the area but they’re not always great for sightseeing. That means choosing tours that include transport makes life so much easier and saves time.

It’s also safer to join a tour than to explore independently. La Fortuna is one of the safest towns in Costa Rica and when we lived here, we felt perfectly safe during the day. However, if you’re a first-time visitor to Costa Rica then it’s a good idea to join a tour so that a local guide can show you around and teach you the ins and outs of navigating the area safely.

Tours in La Fortuna also allow you to explore places you wouldn’t be able to otherwise. You can discover all of the best off-the-beaten-path places and trust us, La Fortuna is home to some amazing ones! Plus, joining activities like whitewater rafting tours and rainforest walks gives you access to hidden spots you wouldn’t be able to get to on your own.

We also love taking tours in La Fortuna because you learn much more about the area’s culture, landscape, and biodiversity. We were captivated by the lush jungle and vast amount of wildlife . The guides are great at spotting animals and giving unique information about the ecosystem. You don’t get the same insight when you visit on your own, so if you love nature and wildlife as much as we do, you’ll get a lot more out of a tour than an independent visit.

La Fortuna itself is also a fun city to hang out in. You can explore the cute downtown shops, dine in the many delicious restaurants , and enjoy the fun nightlife scene! There are also tons of great hotels and resorts in La Fortuna , so you’ll feel relaxed and rejuvenated amongst all of your outdoor adventuring!

What are the Best Tours in La Fortuna, Costa Rica?

A couple take a photo at La Fortuna Waterfall, Costa Rica

Visiting the Arenal Volcano is definitely one of the best things to do ( and a great cheap activity in La Fortuna !). In fact, many people come here just to visit one of the must-see volcanoes of Costa Rica ! However, La Fortuna has lots to offer beyond the famous volcano, which is why we think this full-day tour  is so fantastic.

The first stop of the day is La Fortuna Waterfall , a famously powerful 70-meter (230-foot) tall waterfall that gushes from a cliff into an emerald pool below. It’s absolutely beautiful and you can take a refreshing swim either below the waterfall or further downstream, so bring your swimwear!

You’ll also visit a butterfly garden near the entrance to the falls, and we also saw lots of toucans when we went!

Of course, the day’s main event is visiting the Arenal Volcano. You get to hike to the base of the volcano and a little way up its face, and you’ll get to see lava from the 1968 eruption up close! It’s illegal to hike to the summit of the Arenal Volcano but don’t worry, you get incredible views from the base. You’ll see the surrounding jungle and lava fields, as well as the beautiful Lake Arenal.

I do think that visiting the Arenal Volcano with a guide makes a difference. I chose to go as part of a tour rather than visiting independently because I wanted to learn more about the volcano, and I’m so glad I did!

Bailey swims in the calm river next to La Fortuna Waterfall

The tour also includes a visit to the Maleku Cultural Resource Center to learn about the Maleku people, who are one of the eight Indigenous groups in Costa Rica.

The final stop of the day is at some natural hot springs, where you can relax in warm, mineral-rich waters as you sip on a complimentary cocktail. There are tons of great hot springs in La Fortuna , stopping at one on this tour is a perfect introduction so hopefully, you can explore more during your vacay!

This tour is a good fit if you don’t have a lot of time in La Fortuna and want to see as much as possible. La Fortuna Waterfall, the Arenal Volcano, and visiting hot springs are all high on our list of the best things to do in La Fortuna , and this tour lets you cover them all in just one day.

At $91 USD per adult, we also think that this tour is fantastic value for money because it includes hotel pickup and drop off, all admission fees, your guide, lunch, and alcoholic beverages! Plus, it lasts for 11 hours, you really can’t get an inclusive tour for this cheap anywhere else! You can book this incredible day exploring La Fortuna online here .

White water rafting in Costa Rica

Whitewater rafting is SO much fun and La Fortuna is an ideal place to do it. It’s close to some great rafting rivers, including Balsa, which is perfect for first-timers. In fact, Costa Rica has the best whitewater rafting in all of Central America. Whitewater rafting can be a bit nerve-wracking if you haven’t done it before, which is why we recommend  this rafting tour out of La Fortuna .

It’s a half-day experience that takes you to Class II and III rapids, which are fun and challenging but still great for beginners. The guides are super friendly and give you lots of instruction beforehand, and then you’ll go on a 10-kilometer (6-mile) trip along the river, with a swim stop along the way.

I also love how you get a different perspective of the beautiful Costa Rican landscape from the river, it is an entirely new experience!

The 5-hour tour costs $68 USD per person and travelers aged 5 and up can participate, so this activity is suitable for families, too. You get snacks along the way and a traditional Costa Rican lunch at the end, and round-trip transport from your hotel is included, too. Be sure to book this experience in advance , as it’s popular for a reason!

If you’re still anxious about rafting, just think “If a 5-year-old can do it, I can do it.” You can go whitewater rafting all over the world but the quality of rafting in La Fortuna is hard to beat, so this is definitely a fantastic place to do it! And if you want to learn even more, just read our guide to whitewater rafting in La Fortuna , which covers all your burning questions.

If your goal is finding amazing white water rafting, the best time to visit Costa Rica is actually during the rainy season, from June to October. The rivers are at their fullest and fast-flowing, which means you’re in for some epic rafting!

at the bridge of Mistico Park with a view of Arenal Volcano in La Fortuna, Costa Rica

This award-winning tour  is the ultimate adventurous day out in La Fortuna! Lace up your hiking boots and prepare for some trekking, because you’ll take three different hikes to three of the best places to visit in Costa Rica.

You start by heading to Arenal Volcano National Park for a 2.5-hour hike to the base of the volcano. We thought the coolest part of the hike was visiting a lava field! Our guide told us all about the major eruption that took place in 1968 and we had some time to take in amazing views of the park.

We also love that this includes a La Fortuna Waterfall tour for another (shorter) hike and a swim in the pool below its powerful stream. If you’re not a strong swimmer, there are also some pools a little further downriver that have calm water, so you won’t miss out. The water temperature is on the cooler side, but that’s exactly what you need in the warm, humid, Costa Rican climate!

And finally, you head to the Mistico Hanging Bridges for a 3.2-kilometer (2-mile) forest hike that takes you across 14 bridges, six of which are hanging bridges. This is an amazing place to see Costa Rica’s iconic wildlife including tropical birds, sloths, and monkeys, and your guide will help you to spot them.

This tour is another good option if you don’t have long in La Fortuna and you’re someone who likes to be active. Your step count will be through the roof by the end of the day, plus you’ll get to cross three epic locations off of your Costa Rica itinerary ! It costs $163 USD per person including all of your transport, admission fees, and lunch. You can book this 9-hour tour online here !

Repelling down a waterfall in Costa Rica on a canyoning tou

This is a fantastic adventure tour full of canyoning and waterfalls! Our first stop was heading into the rainforest in a 4×4 and then climbing up a secret canyon. I felt like I was in an action movie! Don’t worry though, unlike in the movies you’ll be harnessed in and your guide will coach you, so it’s totally safe and an exciting experience!

Once you’ve completed the climb, you tackle a rappelling course that includes a monkey drop, which is basically where you descend via a zipline like a monkey. It’s so much fun!

The course also includes four waterfall descents where you actually rappel through the flowing water, so wear clothes you don’t mind getting wet!

You can do this tour whether or not you have any rappelling experience. It’s great for beginners but the course is so much fun that you can still enjoy it even if it’s your 50th time going rappelling, as each location is a little different.

I’ll say that you do work up quite an appetite during this adventure, so luckily the tour ends at a ranch house where you’ll eat a traditional local lunch. It usually consists of homemade tortillas and salsa, with fresh tropical juice to quench your thirst, or coffee if you need an energy boost after all that activity.

The tour costs $119 USD per person including transport from your hotel and lunch. This tour is family friendly and kids as young as 5 can participate. If canyoning, rock climbing, rappelling, and waterfall exploring sound like a good day to you, I highly recommend booking this tour !

Traditional coffee brewer in La Fortuna, Costa Rica

Costa Rica is known for many things and top among them are chocolate and coffee! Costa Rica exports about 90% of its coffee and is the 13th largest coffee producer in the world. It’s also known for its high-quality cacao beans, so a coffee and chocolate tour is a must-do activity when you visit Costa Rica !

We love  this specialty coffee and chocolate tour  because it takes you to a family-run farm, so it’s a fantastic way to support local industry. It’s also a super informative and engaging tour, and you get so many samples along the way. I couldn’t believe how much better coffee and chocolate both taste when they’re fresh!

During the tour, we got to see the intense process of cultivating coffee beans and turning them into a product that’s ready to ship. The tour even gets hands-on at various points of the process, so you too have a hand in the coffee and chocolate production!

Even if you’re not a coffee drinker, it’s so cool to learn about how coffee goes from bean to cup, and it’s a great insight into Costa Rica’s agricultural practices. Coffee is a world-wide industry and I found it fascinating to get a glimpse into the process.

The tour costs $43 USD per person, including transport and TONS of tastings of tea, coffee, chocolate, and sugarcane. It lasts for 2.5 hours so it’s not too long and you can choose to go at 8 am, 10 am, 12:30 pm, 2 pm, or 3 pm. You can book this tasty experience online here!

Zipline costa rica

Ziplining is always a blast, but it’s even better when you get to soar through the rainforest canopy and over the stunning La Fortuna Waterfall, which is exactly what  this ziplining tour offers. In fact, it’s the only ziplining tour in La Fortuna that includes this stunning aerial view!

You’ll also get amazing views of the Arenal and Cerro Chato volcanoes and spot lots of wildlife as you fly through the trees. There are 12 different ziplines in total and it’s quite an active tour since you need to hike to the first zipline and between some of the others.

After you’ve finished the zipline course, you’ll visit the Maleku Cultural Resource Center for a more relaxed activity. Here, you’ll learn about the Indigenous Maleku people and their deep connection to the land and rainforest. The Center exists to preserve the rich Maleku culture and educate visitors about its art, customs, and history.

The tour costs $92 USD and is scheduled to last for 2.5 hours. It includes round-trip transportation from your hotel, safety equipment, all admission fees, and your guide. It doesn’t include food or drink but there will be some available to buy along the way, so make sure to bring some cash.

La Fortuna and Monteverde are my two favorite places to go ziplining in Costa Rica , so I definitely think that this experience is worth it! You can reserve this tour in advance here .

Sloth deep in the trees in Costa Rica

La Fortuna is one of the best places in Costa Rica to spot sloths. Seeing a sloth in the wild is actually harder than you think! We love sloths, so obviously we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see them on  this sloth-watching tour !

The tour takes you to an area just outside of La Fortuna known as Sloth’s Territory where you’ll see lots of two and three-toed sloths, as well as plenty of other wildlife. You’ll explore the reserve on foot but we found it really easy to walk around, and you get to visit the on-site organic farm at the end for some fresh fruit.

This tour really is a must for wildlife lovers because you get to see so much when you explore Sloth’s Territory. You can spot opossums, red frogs, hummingbirds, parrots, porcupines, and so much more! We loved our experience and we learned SO much from our guide.

It costs $35 USD per person including snacks and entry to the sloth reserve. You will need to get yourself here, but if you’re renting a car in Costa Rica , it’s only a 10-minute drive. This tour is capped at 10 people, so you get more of a personalized experience and have time to ask lots of questions. It’s under 2 hours long so you can easily do another short tour on the same day, as there are lots of times to choose from.

If seeing a sloth is on your Costa Rica bucket list, this tour is your golden ticket! Book this tour online here and get excited to see these cute and curious creatures.

A man walks across the Mistico Hanging Bridges

Visiting the Mistico Hanging Bridges is one of the best ways to see wildlife in La Fortuna. They’re located in a large, private park and you can actually see as much wildlife here as you do in places like Manuel Antonio National Park .

Yep, it’s THAT good!

This 3-hour tour  takes you to Mistico Park to explore via the bridges. There are 14 of them in total, and eight are ground-level while six are hanging bridges. Your guide will lead the way and point out lots of amazing wildlife and teach you more about the local ecosystem.

One thing we love about the Mistico Park hanging bridges is that you get amazing views of the Arenal Volcano. The birds here are also incredible . You can see rainbow-beak toucans, orange-bellied trogons, and crested guans, among many other types of tropical birds.

We have been to Mistico Park with and without a guide, and we really found it valuable to have one! They have such a deep knowledge of the rainforest and wildlife, so not only did we see more but we also walked away with a better understanding of this beautiful country.

The tour costs $48 USD per person if you drive yourself. The tour also includes entrance fees to the park and your amazing guide! There are multiple departure times to select from, so you can choose one that best fits your schedule. Book this tour online here !

Daniel riding an ATV through the jungle in Costa Rica

ATV tours are always a blast but we think that this one’s even more fun than usual! On this La Fortuna ATV tour , you get to drive around a private farm right next to Arenal Volcano National Park, which is one of Costa Rica’s best national parks if you ask me!

You’ll check out old impact craters, as well as visit Arenal Lake and a volcanic mud river. You can even use the mud on your skin and get a free spa treatment!

Before you head out, you get a quick lesson on how to drive the ATVs and you’ll drive a practice circuit first to make sure you’re good to go. The tour then starts by taking you across open plains so that you’ll feel confident by the time you reach the fun trails.

Then, you’ll tear around all the trails, exploring the terrain and enjoying great views of the Arenal Volcano in the distance. It’s so much fun, but you should wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty because you’re definitely going to be muddy by the end!

Another great thing about this tour is that you can spot lots of wildlife, like monkeys and sloths, along the way as you go through the forest.

The tour costs $105 USD per person, including hotel pick-up and drop-off, a safety helmet, and bottled water along the way to keep you hydrated. Children 13 years and older are welcome to join and this tour accommodates up to 14 travelers. It lasts for around 2 hours and you can choose to go in the early morning, late morning, or afternoon.

If you’re looking for an adrenaline-pumping activity while in La Fortuna, you need to book this tour because it is sure to deliver!

The steps down to Rio Celeste Waterfalls

Rio Celeste is easily one of the most beautiful rivers in Costa Rica (and probably the world) because it’s so blue it almost looks fake! You really do have to see it to believe it.

The river is in Tenorio Volcano National Park , 68 km (42 mi) from La Fortuna. It really is a must-visit when you’re in town and  this Rio Celeste tour  will take you on a full-day exploration.

Your guide will lead you on a 3 km (1.8 mi) trek to Rio Celeste and help you spot wildlife along the way. You’ll visit Rio Celeste Waterfall, which I think is the most scenic waterfall in the entire country – and that’s saying something!

After the waterfall, you’ll come across a hot part of the river, which is known as Los Borbollones (the Bubbling Hot Pot). Your guide will explain the natural phenomenon behind why this happens, although you might need to cover your nose because the water smells very strongly of rotten eggs – don’t worry, it’s just the sulfur!

The trek ends at Teñideros, which is the point where you see the water change from clear to that shocking shade of blue. Then, you turn back and return to the entrance before heading for lunch at a local restaurant, which is included in the price of the tour.

This 8-hour tour costs $89 USD, including transport from La Fortuna. You definitely don’t have to be a pro hiker to do the trek but you should be reasonably fit and healthy. Book this experience here to see the stunning Rio Celeste up close!

A huge lizard on a night tour in La Fortuna

Costa Rica is famed for its wildlife and many of the most fascinating creatures can only be seen at night! But of course, you probably don’t want to go wandering into the rainforest by yourself after dark.

Fortunately, you can join  this rainforest night walk  and spot all of the amazing nocturnal creatures hiding in the trees, including bats, birds, and snakes. Plus, you get to visit a frog sanctuary and see red-eyed tree frogs and glass frogs. Where else will you be able to have this experience!?

Red-eyed tree frogs are one of the most iconic creatures in Costa Rica and glass frogs are amazing to see because of their translucent skin.

I did this tour and absolutely loved it! I saw so many creatures and our guide was so helpful in pointing out lots of animals I might have otherwise missed. And while Monteverde is well-known for its night tours and incredible nocturnal creatures, we thought our night tour in La Fortuna was just as good.

The guided trek lasts for about 1.5 hours, with the whole tour being about 4 hours. After your trek, you’ll head to a local spot for a traditional Costa Rican dinner prepared on a wood-burning stove. This is a really nice end to the evening and I loved the food!

The tour costs $65 USD per person and includes hotel pickup and drop off, lanterns and flashlights, bottled water, and your dinner. It was such an amazing experience and I think it’s a fantastic way to spend an evening in La Fortuna! You can book this unique night tour online here .

A lady in the Venado Caves in La Fortuna

I think the Venado Caves are a really underrated thing to do in La Fortuna . The caves aren’t a huge tourist attraction and relatively few visitors to La Fortuna get to experience them, so if you want to get off the beaten path this really is the ultimate way to do it.

I had so much fun when I went, and it’s definitely one of the most adventurous activities around!

I did  this 4-hour tour which took us on a subterranean expedition through the caves. You enter through a large cavern and then explore smaller caverns, grottoes, and chambers. In fact, some of the holes between the caves are a very tight squeeze, but you can skip some of these if you’re not comfortable.

You also see some very interesting (and to be honest, slightly spooky) creatures along the way, like bats and big spiders.

This experience definitely isn’t for the faint of heart but you’re accompanied by an expert guide who will encourage you and make you feel safe. It’s such a good way to challenge yourself and honestly, you get an amazing sense of achievement afterwards. Children 8 and up are welcome to join this exciting adventure.

The tour costs $79 USD including transport, all caving equipment, towels, bottled water, and fresh fruit snacks afterward. It really is an incredible experience and I promise you won’t forget it in a hurry! You can book this caving experience online here.

Other Activities to do While You’re in La Fortuna

Free hot springs in La Fortuna 1

There are even more amazing tours we could have listed out of La Fortuna, so we wanted to add some additional activities in case you’re looking for more! With so many unique things to do in La Fortuna, you’ll never be bored.

  • Visit Lake Arenal – As the largest lake in Costa Rica, the best way to explore it is by getting out on the water. You can have an active afternoon by taking a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) tour or a relaxing evening on a sunset cruise .
  • Hike to Hule Lagoon – If you’re looking to hike along the rim of a volcano, through the rainforest, and to a stunning lagoon, you must check out Hule Lagoon. The easiest way to reach it is with this full-day tour . It is a 1.5-hour drive, then 3-4 hours of guided hiking, followed by lunch! This is one of my top day trips out of La Fortuna.
  • Relax in a free hot spring – Believe it or not, there are some amazing hot springs that are completely free outside of La Fortuna . The natural hot spring river runs right next to Tabacon Resort and is only a 15-minute drive from La Fortuna . There are shuttles that run from La Fortuna or parking attendants if you drive yourself, so it’s a convenient option for a soak.
  • Drink craft beer – Craft beer enthusiasts like me will appreciate the breweries in Costa Rica ! I love the brews at Lake Arenal Hotel and Brewery . It’s a 15-acre organic farm and you can also opt to stay the night, especially if you want to try a range of their beers!
  • Take a cooking class – The food is one of my favorite things about Costa Rica! The next best thing to eating locally-made Costa Rican food is learning to make it yourself. This 3-course cooking class is not only a super fun experience, but lets you get into the culture too!

Where to Stay in La Fortuna, Costa Rica

Bailey in a spa at Casa Luna Hotel, La Fortuna

Because La Fortuna is such a big tourist town, there are a ton of amazing places to stay. Here are our top recommendations for every budget.

One of the go-to budget options is  Selina La Fortuna . I’ve stayed in Selina hostels around the world and this is a great one. It has a fun party atmosphere and a great co-working space where we spent a lot of time.

Selina Fortuna is located right in the middle of town, so you have easy access to great bars and restaurants nearby. Rates begin at $26 USD for a one-night stay in a dorm and $124 USD for a one-night stay in a private room. You can check availability and book on  Booking.com .

Those with a medium budget should check out  Casa Luna Hotel & Spa . I stayed here on my first visit to La Fortuna and loved it. The property is beautiful, with a large pool and four hot tubs surrounded by nature. You can also enjoy the tropical botanic garden at the hotel.

Casa Luna Hotel & Spa is near Arenal Volcano National Park, and all the rooms have views of the volcano and the rainforest. The hotel also includes a delicious breakfast in the $204 USD room rate. Casa Luna is located a short drive from town and you can reserve a room online on  Booking.com here .

For arguably the most luxurious hotel in La Fortuna, check out  The Springs Resort & Spa at Arenal . While the rooms don’t come cheap ($600 USD+), it’s a bucket list place to stay that’s perfect for  visiting Costa Rica on a honeymoon !

You’ll find 28 hot spring pools here, making the resort the perfect place if you really want to relax. There’s also a resort-style pool, a fitness center, a swim-up bar, hot tubs, and a spa and wellness center. You can reserve a room at The Springs Resort & Spa at Arenal  on Booking.com .

Getting Around Costa Rica

Bailey with our rental car near Rio Celeste Costa Rica

How you choose to get around Costa Rica is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your holiday here! How you do it depends on your budget, travel style, and comfort level.

Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past.

One of the things you need to watch for when renting a car in Costa Rica is the mandatory insurance that the government requires you to have. There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book.

Thankfully, on Discover Cars it’s easy to tell apart the companies that include the mandatory insurance and those that don’t. The trick is you can’t pick any car on their website. In the picture below, you can see this rental car, with pick up in Jaco, includes the TPL. That means the mandatory insurance is included in the price. Any cover you get above that is extra.

Of course, I still suggest getting the full coverage offered by Discover Cars, which covers you even more.

You can  browse cars on Discover Cars here .

TPL Cover Costa Rica

If renting a car isn’t in your budget, you don’t feel comfortable driving in Costa Rica , or you just don’t like driving, shuttles are the next best option. There are hundreds of shuttle routes available all over the country, and they are very affordable.

Shuttles in Costa Rica are specifically for tourists and often include pick up and drop off at your selected hotels and airports. The drivers also speak some English, and the vehicles have air conditioning. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat when you book a shuttle (which isn’t the case with the public bus system.)

To get the best price, use the website  Bookaway . They compare all the offers and prices of shuttle companies in Costa Rica so you get the best price! Honestly, we have saved so much money using Bookaway!

You can search for shuttles online on Bookaway here.

Lastly, you can use the public bus system. On short journeys, such as from San Jose to La Fortuna or Uvita to Manuel Antonio, this system is great. However, the longer the journey the more hassle and time spent on a bus. It’s undoubtedly best to save the public bus in Costa Rica for short and straightforward trips!

The public buses are definitely the cheapest way to get around Costa Rica, but they are not always very reliable and schedules often change without notice and delays are to be expected. The buses can also be very crowded and hot – so just be prepared!

It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English.

Darya Dugina, the daughter of Putin ally Alexander Dugin, was killed in Moscow.

Tuesday briefing: The mystery of the Moscow car bomb attack

In today’s newsletter: After an ultranationalist’s daughter is killed in Moscow, people in Russia and the west are asking who did it – and what the Kremlin might do next

Good morning. On Saturday, Darya Dugina, the daughter of the ultranationalist Russian ideologue Alexander Dugin, was killed by a car bomb in Moscow. Yesterday, Vladimir Putin called it a “vile, cruel crime”, and Moscow said that Ukraine was responsible. But that description tells only a small part of the story of an attack in the Russian capital that is unprecedented in the six months since the war began.

There are many unresolved questions about the killing – and the military consequences that could flow from it. Today’s newsletter, with the Guardian’s Moscow correspondent Andrew Roth, is about some of the possible answers. Here are the headlines.

Five big stories

Environment | The Tory leadership frontrunner, Liz Truss, was responsible for cutting millions of pounds in funding earmarked for tackling water pollution during her time as environment secretary, the Guardian revealed.

Crime | A nine-year-old girl has been shot dead in Liverpool and two other people taken to hospital with gunshot injuries. Officers began a murder investigation after attending a house at 10pm over reports an unknown male had fired a gun inside the property.

US politics | Donald Trump on Monday filed suit against the US government over the FBI search of his Mar-a-Lago home, seeking to temporarily stop the bureau reading seized materials until a special court official can be appointed to review documents concerned.

Policing | The Metropolitan police were wrong to Taser a man on Chelsea Bridge and their “excessive and unnecessary force” contributed to his death , his family have said. Oladeji Omishore, 41, was hit by the electric stun gun on 4 June before climbing over a barrier and falling into the River Thames below.

Justice | Criminal barristers in England and Wales have voted in favour of an all-out strike next month in a clash with the government over jobs and pay, with 79.5% of members of the Criminal Bar Association voting to strike.

In depth: Setting the stage for ‘total war’

The site of a suspected car bomb attack that killed Darya Dugina in Moscow.

What do we know about how the attack happened?

On Saturday night, Alexander Dugin gave a lecture at a festival at an estate in Moscow dedicated to the kind of hard-right pro-war worldview he is known for. He and his daughter Darya Dugina left, apparently in different vehicles. About five minutes after Dugina left, the Toyota Land Cruiser she was driving was blown up by a car bomb. Footage circulated on social media appeared to show Dugin standing next to the wreckage in a state of distress.

Reports in the Russian media on Monday claimed that an untraceable telephone may have been used to remotely detonate the device after it left a garage where CCTV had been switched off. They also claimed that the perpetrators may have been following the car when it blew up.

It’s hard to assess some of these claims with any certainty, Andrew said. Russian authorities have given limited evidence to back up their version of events, “but that doesn’t discount it”. But we can say with confidence that Dugina died in an attack which may have been aimed at her father – and it appears to have been carefully planned.

Who was Darya Dugina, and who is her father, Alexander Dugin?

“Most analysts who heard the news immediately thought it was Alexander who had been targeted,” Andrew said. Dugin exults in the nickname “Putin’s Brain”; but while some people in Putin’s circle have read Dugin’s work, it is less clear that he has the kind of sway on the Russian leader that would justify that title.

“He’s the kind of person you see on these gladiatorial screamathons you get on pro-Kremlin TV,” Andrew said. “But it’s important to understand that people like Dugin don’t make the final decisions – they’re just one pressure group in a complicated country.” As a rough comparison, think of some of the talking heads with tenuous links to the Trump administration who turn up on Fox News.

Dugin’s politics are extreme: he is an ultranationalist who advocates for a new Russian empire. At the same time, Andrew said, he is “a political opportunist – I remember him requesting €500 to give interviews”.

Russian ideologue Alexander Dugin at a ‘Battle for Donbas’ rally in Moscow.

“This is not the same as an attack killing a member of a Kremlin official’s family,” he said. “In those terms, he’s small fry. But he has an outsize profile.” That profile suggests another important feature of the attack: “He doesn’t have the security detail you would associate with somebody at the Kremlin. He’s a softer target.”

Dugina, meanwhile, was the editor of a disinformation website, United World International, and a TV pundit. Her politics were “close to a continuation of her father’s approach, but she was a little slicker,” Andrew said. She was also less prominent: “People in Moscow know who he is. You didn’t have to know who she was unless you were following this stuff closely.” Nonetheless, her pro-war rhetoric had earned her a place on UK and US sanctions lists, and it is not impossible she was targeted herself.

Who does Russia say was responsible?

One of the key questions in the aftermath of the attack was whether Russia would “frame it as terrorism or sweep it under the rug”, Andrew said; on Monday, the Federal Security Service (FSB) provided an answer. It accused Ukrainian intelligence services of carrying out the killing, and said the suspect was a Ukrainian woman in Russia with her 12-year-old daughter since July. The suspect had attended the festival, and fled to Estonia in a Mini Cooper after the bomb went off.

The FSB’s version of events appears to suggest that it was Dugina and not Dugin who was the target. Ukraine has denied responsibility for the attack, with one official noting: “Not many people here have heard of him, and nobody had heard of his daughter.”

The FSB has provided little evidence for its claims beyond footage of the woman driving across the border in and out of Russia. As Shaun Walker argues in this excellent analysis of the claimed chronology, there are plenty of reasons for scepticism. He noted how quickly the agency put its case together, and how remarkable it would be for a Ukrainian assassin with a child in tow to navigate Russia with impunity. “If true, it is a shocking FSB failure and, if false, it is a strangely self-incriminating tale to invent,” he wrote.

At the same time, Shaun notes, it is possible to see a motive to carrying out the attack from Kyiv. If so, it marks a departure from Ukraine’s strategy of retaliation within Russia, which has been confined to military and logistical assets near the border, and a string of attacks in Crimea , the Black Sea territory annexed by Russia in 2014.

Is that the only possible explanation?

No. One claim is that the attack was carried out by an underground opposition movement within Russia – “but I’m sceptical of that”, Andrew said. “From what we know the internal opposition haven’t done anything like this before. It would be a huge step up.”

There’s also the theory of a false flag attack carried out by elements close to the Kremlin as a pretext for retaliation. “There is no reason to do that if you want to intensify attacks on Ukraine or crack down on the opposition,” Andrew said. ”The Kremlin doesn’t need a pretext to do that – it does whatever it wants.” If so, the significant downside of spreading panic among Kremlin outriders doesn’t seem worthwhile.

Finally, some have floated the possibility that the killing was simply a crime tied to a business dispute involving Dugin or Dugina. But that doesn’t appear to align with the sophistication of the attack, even if the FSB’s claims should be taken with a grain of salt.

What are the likely consequences of the attack?

“This is unprecedented here,” Andrew said. “And there are already people writing that this is not the last act of terror we’re going to see. It will have scared people in Dugin’s circles. Until now, they have been able to agitate for war without thinking it would come for them.”

after newsletter promotion

The larger question is whether claims of Ukrainian responsibility will lead to a Russian escalation. “It could set the stage for a new wave of political violence,” Andrew said, against so-called “decision making centres” and specific Ukrainian officials. But if more general attacks on Kyiv increase, it’s worth bearing in mind that such an escalation was already expected to coincide with Ukraine’s independence day on Wednesday.

Regardless, for the most belligerent voices in Russia – voices aligned with Dugin’s – the death of his daughter will be viewed as evidence for the strategy they already espoused. “Many of those who’ve been agitating for a more aggressive approach are demanding a response now,” Andrew said. “They want total war.”

Scott Oughton-Johnson, centre, who founded the Proper Blokes walking club.

A few years ago, Scott Oughton-Johnson was struggling with stress and anxiety following a long custody struggle. He’d had cognitive behaviour therapy from the NHS but was then, in his words, “back in the wild” and having to cope on his own, as Sirin Kale reports in the latest profile for the Guardian Angel series . So Oughton-Johnson launched a Facebook group with a video asking if any other men in his south London neighbourhood were up for a walk. Two years later, the Proper Blokes Club has a website and an active WhatsApp group, and men in neighbouring boroughs are organising their own walks. “Each day we do a check-in, and say, ‘Good morning. Hope everyone is all right. Have a good day,’” says Oughton-Johnson. “We’ve had incidents where people say, ‘I’m not in a great place; is anyone about?’ And people have gone and met them, or called them up.”

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged Western allies to boost Ukraine’s air defenses after a Russian drone strike destroyed an apartment block in the southern port city of Odesa and killed at least 11 people. Officials on Sunday said the bodies of a boy — and a young woman clutching an infant — were pulled from Saturday’s rubble.

“The mother tried to cover the 8-month-old child with her own (body). She tried to save them. They were found in a firm embrace,” said a Telegram post published on the interior ministry’s official channel. Separately, the governor of the Odesa region, Oleh Kiper, said the other child was 10.

On Saturday, Ukrainian authorities said another baby was among those killed after falling debris from an Iranian-made drone hit the building — one of eight Russian drones reported by officials. Later that day, Zelenskyy said a second child aged 2 had also died.

“Delays in the delivery of weapons to Ukraine, as well as air defense to protect our people, unfortunately result in such losses,” Zelenskyy wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

More people may still be trapped, the Odesa branch of Ukraine’s main emergency service said on Facebook. Kiper said rescue workers continued to comb through the site.

Elsewhere in Ukraine, regional authorities reported that a 58-year-old man died under rubble after Russian forces overnight shelled his village in the southern Kherson province. Another civilian man, 38, was killed in a Russian artillery strike in the neighboring Zaporizhzhia region, local Gov. Ivan Fedorov said.

On Sunday afternoon, Donetsk regional Gov. Vadim Filashkin said a Russian airstrike on the eastern town of Kurakhove wounded 16 people and damaged 15 high-rise apartment blocks.

REPORTS OF EXPLOSIONS AT AN OIL DEPOT IN CRIMEA

In Russian-occupied Crimea, loud explosions were heard near an oil depot in the early hours Sunday, according to a local pro-Kyiv Telegram news channel. Kremlin-installed officials in the territory said a nearby stretch of highway was closed for about eight hours.

Videos shared with pro-Ukrainian channel Crimean Wind showed explosions lighting up the sky, followed by booms. The channel said they were taken by residents near Feodosia, a coastal town in northeastern Crimea. It was not immediately possible to verify the circumstances in which the videos were shot.

An anti-Russian, Crimean Tatar-led underground group claimed that the blasts destroyed a pipeline, causing “colossal” damage.

The group, Atesh — which means “fire” in Crimean Tatar — did not directly claim responsibility for the strike and said it had learned about its consequences from informers among Russian-appointed officials. Authorities in Kyiv did not immediately acknowledge the claims.

Traffic was halted early Sunday along a four-lane Russian federal highway near Feodosia, according to an adviser to Crimea’s Kremlin-installed leader. The Telegram post by Oleg Kryuchkov gave no reasons for the move.

More than eight hours later, Crimea’s local transport minister reported that traffic had partially resumed. A bridge that connects Crimea to Russian territory was also closed to traffic for about two hours early Sunday.

Russia’s defense ministry did not comment on the reports but claimed that 38 Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight into Sunday over the peninsula.

CHINA’S UKRAINE ENVOY HOLDS TALKS IN MOSCOW

In Moscow, China’s special envoy on Ukraine held talks on Saturday evening with senior Russian diplomats in the first leg of a European trip that will also take him to Brussels, Poland, Germany and France, Chinese and Russian state media reported.

China’s foreign ministry said Special Representative Li Hui and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin agreed that negotiations are the only way to end the fighting in Ukraine.

Li’s trip, the second since May, comes as Kyiv seeks Beijing’s participation in peace talks that Switzerland is trying to organize . China claims it is neutral in Russia’s war on Ukraine but maintains close ties with Moscow, with frequent state visits and joint military drills.

On Sunday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said it was time to start discussing a cease-fire between Moscow and Kyiv, claiming that “both sides have now reached the limits of the results they can achieve through war.”

Speaking at a news conference, Fidan said that such a move would not mean recognizing Russia’s occupation of parts of Ukraine.

“We believe that it is time to separate the issues of recognition of the occupation and sovereignty from the cease-fire issue,” he said.

Kozlowska reported from London. Associated Press writers Simina Mistreanu in Taipei, Taiwan and Cinar Kiper in Antalya, Turkey contributed.
