I was wondering if anyone knows of a good AdBlocker for Safari (I am running MacOS High Sierra on a 2015 MBA) which can be downloaded without the Apple App Store. Preferably something light as I am trying to keep this device as light as possible. I am new to this so forgive my ignorance on this matter. Thank you.

You can search for a Safari extension called AdGuard. I used to use the AdGuard app but any type of disk cleaner or anti-virus will tend to slow down a Mac. An alternative is to use something like Brave browser with built in ad blocking capabilities.

"so there's a difference between an extension and an app?" Yes.

Thanks. I am not seeing just an extension of AdGuard. I am seeing a full app.

When you accept the terms of an Ad Blocker, note that it says the software has access to all of your browsing history and data. So be sure it’s a company you trust.

Add functionality and efficiency to Apple's web browser

What to Know

  • To download and install an extension, go to the Safari menu > Safari Extensions , find an extension, and click Get > Install .
  • To activate an extension, go to Safari > Preferences > Extensions , click the check box next to the extension, then click Turn on .
  • Access an extension via its Safari Toolbar icon. To disable: Preferences > Extensions , remove the check mark. Click Uninstall to delete it.

This article explains how to install, use, and manage Safari extensions. Instructions in this article apply to Safari 9 and later.

How to Download and Install Safari Extensions

Installing Safari extensions is an easy process. You can find a selection within Safari itself.

Open Safari and select Safari Extensions from the Safari menu.

The App Store opens to the Safari Extensions section. Scroll to find an extension you want to add. Downloading extensions is like buying anything else in the Mac App Store .

Click Get on a free extension or the price on a paid extension.

The Get button or price button becomes a green Install button. Click it to download the extension.

Your Mac may ask you to authorize the purchase even if the extension is free. Do so to continue the download.

To activate the new extension, return to Safari and select Preferences under the Safari menu.

The keyboard shortcut is Command + , (comma).

Select the Extensions tab in the Safari General preferences screen.

Click the check box next to the extension you downloaded.

Confirm the activation by selecting Turn On in the pop-up window.

To browse for additional add-ons, click the More Extensions button to return to the Mac App Store. Repeat these steps for all the extensions you download.

How to Use a Safari Extension

How you use a Safari extension depends on its functionality, but some elements are common to all of them. Generally speaking, you access and use an extension by clicking its icon on your Safari Toolbar. Once you do that, it runs an automated process or opens a menu to let you set preferences or select actions.

For example, the Grammarly extension runs automatically while you write, but you can open the menu to turn it off or on for a website.

How to Manage or Delete Safari Extensions

Once you start loading extensions for your Safari browser, you're probably going to want to manage their use or uninstall the extensions you don't like or just never use.

Return to the Extensions pane of Safari's Preferences pane.

Click the name of the extension you want to remove in the left pane.

To temporarily disable the extension, remove the check mark from the box next to it.

To remove an extension completely, click Uninstall in the right pane.

You can redownload extensions you've uninstalled as long as they're still available in the App Store.

What Are Safari Extensions?

Extensions are third-party developers add-on code that uses Safari's web features for specific tasks, such as making it easier to search Amazon, allowing an app, such as 1Password, to integrate with the browser and create an easy-to-use password management system, or adding an effective way to block pop-up ads.

You'll also find that most social media sites have Safari extensions that make posting to your favorite social site as simple as clicking a button in the Safari toolbar .

Where to Find More Safari Extensions

The App Store isn't the only place to download Safari extensions; it's just the easiest. You can also find them on other sites with a quick internet search.

Safari extensions are generally safe to install. Apple requires all extensions to run within the basic tools it provides in the Safari extension environment. You don't necessarily have to worry that one you download outside of the App Store will wreck your computer but make sure you trust the developer before you install anything they made.

Troubleshooting, how to install & use safari extensions on iphone & ipad.

How to Install Safari Extensions on iPhone and iPad

Safari Extensions are now available on iPhone and iPad since the iOS 15/iPadOS 15 update. This is one of the biggest functional changes to Safari, and it’s something that’s long been available on the Mac.

With Safari extensions, you can improve your browsing experience with third-party tools and plug-ins published on the App Store.

But, you won’t find the option to add new extensions within the browser itself, so it’s easy t understand why you may not know how the feature works, or how to install them into Safari on your iPhone and iPad.

How to Install Safari Extensions on iPhone & iPad

First and foremost, you need to make sure that your device is running iOS 15/iPadOS 15 or later. If not, update the software and then follow the instructions below carefully:

How to Install Safari Extensions on iPhone and iPad

The extension you just installed will show up as a standalone app on your iPhone or iPad, but don’t worry about it. Downloading and installing the extension is just one part of the process. So, read below to find what you need to do next.

How to Use Safari Extensions on iPhone & iPad

We want to point out that the extensions you install are disabled by default. You’ll need to manually enable them before you can access and use them within the browser. The steps below will guide you on how you can do this and then access your new extension. Let’s get started:

How to Install Safari Extensions on iPhone and iPad

In this instance, we installed a content blocker. Therefore, we have the option to enable or disable it for the website here. But the steps are similar no matter what extension you install.

At the moment, you may not find a massive selection of Safari extensions on the App Store. However, this isn’t surprising, especially since the feature is brand-new. Over time, you can expect several developers to hop on board and release new extensions for Safari on the iPhone and iPad.

Besides extension support, the revamped Safari has a lot more to offer. For instance, tab group is a new feature that allows you to save and organize your browser tabs in the best way possible. You can create new tab groups or quickly switch between them from the tab overview screen. Additionally, you can now customize the start page to display sections you want to see and remove the rest.

The Safari overhaul is just one of the many features that iOS 15 brings to the table. You may want to check out new features like Focus mode, which automatically filters notifications based on your current activity. Apple has also improved FaceTime with new features such as voice isolation and wide spectrum modes. SharePlay is yet another significant feature that Apple plans to release very soon. It will allow users to share screens, watch movies, or listen to music with their contacts.

We hope you were able to get used to Safari’s new layout pretty quickly. What are your first impressions of the iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 software updates? What’s your favorite feature so far? Don’t forget to share your thoughts and leave your valuable feedback in the comments section down below.

How to install and use safari extensions on iphone and ipad.

Safari extensions are a powerful new feature in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. Let's take a look at how to install, enable, and start using them.

Quick Links

What are safari extensions on iphone and ipad, how to find and install safari extensions on iphone and ipad, how to enable safari extensions on iphone and ipad, how to use safari extensions on iphone and ipad.

Apple introduced a few interesting features with iOS and iPadOS 15, but one of the most useful is extension support in Safari. The upgrade levels it with its desktop counterpart in terms of power, and you can take advantage of that power now.

Safari extensions on your iPhone or iPad work very similarly to extensions on the macOS version of Safari. They have the same level of power as desktop extensions, giving you much more control of your web browsing experience than has ever been possible in iOS or iPadOS before.

Apple introduced support for these extensions in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, so before you start using them, you'll need to update your device to iOS or iPadOS 15 or later.

Installing Safari extensions is an easy process on both iPhone and iPad. The process of actually finding them can be a little tricky. Some extensions, like the 1Password extension , are included with the app, while others are standalone extensions.

Either way, you'll find extensions in the App Store. As of September 2021, there isn't a separate section for extensions, so you'll need to look at a listing in the App Store to see whether it includes an extension or not.

To install the 1Password extension, for example, you would open the App Store, then search for "1Password" in the search bar at the top of the screen. Then you tap the app's listing and scroll down until you see the Supports section.

If an app either is an extension or includes one, you'll see "Safari Extension" listed under the Supports heading. Install the app, and it will install the extension alongside it.

To browse a selection of the available extensions, you can open settings, scroll down to the Safari settings, then go to Extensions. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap More Extensions to see a list of extensions within the App Store.

This isn't a complete list of Safari extensions, but it's a nice starting point to see what's available.

One tricky aspect of Safari extensions on both iOS and iPadOS is that they aren't enabled by default. Before you can actually use an extension, you'll need to enable it.

The process is the same on both iPhone and iPad. Open Settings, select the Safari settings menu, then tap Extensions.

Under Allow These Extensions, you'll see a list of all the extensions you've installed and whether they're enabled or not. To enable an extension, tap on it, then enable the option slider at the top of the screen.

If there are any Permissions settings for a given extension, they'll appear at the bottom of the screen after you enable it. For 1Password, for example, you'll see a list of websites you've allowed the extension on as well as the option to enable it on all websites.

Some extensions like content blockers work in the background, so you never need to actively use them. Other extensions have options or functionality you want to use within Safari.

Fortunately, using these extensions is as easy on iPhone and iPad as it is on Safari on a Mac. That said, the process differs slightly between iPhone and iPad.

Using Safari Extensions on iPhone

Starting with iOS 15, the Safari navigation bar has moved to the bottom of the screen, though you can move it back to its original home if you prefer. No matter where the navigation bar is for you, find it and tap the website settings (double A) icon.

In the menu that appears, you'll see Manage Extensions near the top. Below it, you'll see some of the extensions you've enabled. Tap an extension here to use it.

In the case of 1Password, for example, if you tap its menu entry, the app will prompt you for your master password, then show you available logins for the website you're currently browsing.

Using Safari Extensions on iPad

Using extensions in Safari on iPad is easier. In the navigation bar at the top of the screen, you'll see a puzzle-piece icon that will bring up the Manage Extensions screen.

You'll also see icons for certain extensions, almost as you would in a desktop browser. Tap an extension's icon to use it or to access certain settings.

With your extensions set up, you may also be interested in using widgets on your iPad Home Screen .

How to Install Extensions in Web Browsers Without a Dedicated Extension Store

Does your browser not have a dedicated extension store? Here's how you can still install extensions to some of the most popular web browsers.

One of the reasons why Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Edge are the most popular web browsers is that they offer full extension support. Not only that, but they also happen to be the only web browsers with their own extension stores.

But what about other web browsers that don't have a dedicated extension store, such as Vivaldi, Brave Browser, or Tor Browser? How do you install extensions on them? Here's how you can still install extensions without an official store.

How to Install Extensions in Vivaldi

Since Vivaldi is a Chromium-based web browser , you can install any app on the Google Web Store. However, you'll first need to enable the use of the Google Web Store before installing any extensions. Here's how to do it:

  • Launch Vivaldi.
  • Press Ctrl + F12 to open the Settings menu.
  • Go to the Privacy and Security sub-menu.
  • Open a new tab, go to the Chrome Web Store , and browse for an extension.
  • Select Add extension when the confirmation message appears.
  • Wait for the extension to download and install.

Since Vivaldi uses the Chromium architecture, the Google Web Store will detect it as being Google Chrome. That is why you're prompted with the Add to Chrome message.

How to Install Extensions in Brave

Like Vivaldi, Brave is also a Chromium-based web browser, so the Google Web Store will be your source of extensions. However, just like before, you'll need to enable Google Web Store extension support before you install your extensions:

  • Launch Brave.
  • Press the button with the three horizontal lines in the top-right corner of Brave's UI.
  • Go to the Extensions sub-menu.
  • Access the list of installed extensions in the top-right corner of Brave's UI.

There are varying levels of compatibility between Chrome extensions and Chromium-based browsers. With some extensions, you'll see the Add to Chrome message, while others will show the Add to [your browser's name] message.

How to Install Extensions in Tor (But Why You Shouldn’t)

Unlike the other entries on our list, Tor is based on Firefox rather than Chromium. This means that you can install any extension that you can find on the Firefox Add-ons Store.

However, as you probably know, many consider Tor to be one of the safest and most secure web browsers available on the market. At the same time, there are plenty of security risks associated with using extensions . This is especially the case with extensions that require access to a lot of your personal info to work properly.

That is precisely why many advise against installing any extensions on Tor, since it pretty much defeats the purpose of using it in the first place. However, for those willing to take the risk, here's how you can allow Tor to use Firefox extensions:

  • Launch Tor Browser.
  • Press Ctrl + Shift + A to access the Add-ons and themes menu .
  • Type in the name of an extension you're interested in, and press Enter . You'll automatically open a new tab in the Firefox Add-ons Store based on your search results.

How to Install Extensions in Opera and Opera GX

Both Opera and Opera GX have their own dedicated extensions store. More so, many extension developers usually create Opera-specific versions of their software.

However, neither Opera nor Opera GX are as popular as Chrome or Firefox. Because of this, it's not uncommon to find extensions that offer dedicated Chrome and Firefox support, but no Opera support.

Fortunately enough, both Opera and Opera GX use the Chromium architecture, so Chrome extensions can help improve Opera . Here's what you need to do to install Chrome extensions if you can't find dedicated Opera extensions:

  • Launch Opera or Opera GX.
  • If not, go to the Chrome Web Store, and search for it there.
  • Select your chosen extension from that list to access and manage it.

Due to the possibility of compatibility issues between the browser and extension, we always recommend first checking Opera's dedicated add-on store first before installing any Chrome equivalents.

The Limitations of Using Extensions on Unsupported Browsers

Just because a web browser is Chromium-based does not make it Chrome, and the same thing applies to Firefox-based browsers.

There's always the possibility that there will be compatibility issues. That is why most Chromium and Firefox-based browsers try to be as self-sufficient as possible so that you don't feel the need to install any third-party extensions.

No Dedicated Extension Store Doesn’t Mean No Browser Extensions

Extensions exist to provide web browsers with extra functionality and customization. However, just because your favorite browser happens to be something other than Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Opera, doesn't mean that you should feel limited in any way.

For example, take Brave Browser; it's one of the safest browsers out there. However, that doesn't mean that you can't make it even more secure by installing third-party extensions.

This Safari extension helps fix my Reddit experience now that Apollo is gone

Make Reddit bearable again.

Winston on iPhone

Browsing Reddit on my iPhone used to be an enjoyable experience. Not by using the official Reddit app, you understand – that was (and still is) a nightmare – but by using the much-beloved Apollo app. Yet since Reddit jealously forced Apollo’s developer to shutter the app, I’ve been left in something of a no man’s land.

Using the Reddit app isn’t really an option, as it’s so full of ads and irritating design features that I’ve long since given up on it. But the other alternative – browsing the site in Safari – has its own problems, mainly relating to those incredibly annoying nagging pop-ups that beg you to launch the official app. We’ve been over this Reddit, your app sucks, I’m not going to use it.

For a long time, I was at a loss for what to do. Until, that is, I discovered a handy little Safari extension called Sink It for Reddit . Install this app, tweak a few options, and your browsing experience is freshened up and made a whole lot more bearable. It’s not quite as good an experience as using Apollo was (but then again, what is?), but it’s lured me back to Reddit without requiring me to shore up the official app’s download count. That alone is a win.

What does Sink It for Reddit do?

Three iPhones side-by-side. On-screen is the Sink It for Reddit app as well as a Reddit page being viewed in the Safari web browser.

Sink It for Reddit automatically removes all of those annoying banners telling you to try the Reddit app. These sections take up significant portions of the screen and interrupt your browsing, but with Sink It for Reddit, they’re gone in a flash.

But it offers much more than just automatic banner banishment. You can block ads and promoted content, hide the navigation bar for a more immersive view, add a ‘back to top’ button so you don’t have to endlessly scroll upwards, and much more.

Some of my favorite tweaks relate to comments. I love that Sink It adds color coding to comment threads, making it very easy to keep track of who is replying to whom. You can add a button that scrolls to the next parent comment in a thread, automatically collapse auto-mod posts, and show images inline instead of seeing <image> tags wherever you look.

There are a bunch of other improvements found in the app, and combined they make Sink It an all-in-one fix-up shop for Reddit. I’ve gotten so used to some of its tweaks that I occasionally forget that they’re not native features, that’s how good it is.

Master your iPhone in minutes

The same developer has also launched Sink It for Twitter/X , which takes a similar approach of nuking X’s most irritating features and making the experience on Safari much more pleasant (well, apart from all the weirdos and vitriol, but that’s well beyond the developer’s remit).

As great as Sink It for Reddit is, it doesn’t quite hit Apollo’s level of greatness. But in a world where Reddit is cracking down on almost any competitors to its own (frankly awful) official app, it’s a welcome addition to my Home Screen. If you’re sick of the way Reddit works but still love its content and community, it’s a great app to try.

How to use Sink It for Reddit

Three iPhones side-by-side, with the Sink It for Reddit app shown on-screen.

  • First of all, open the Settings app and go to Safari > Extensions . Tap Sink It for Reddit , then enable all the toggles. Make sure reddit.com and Other Websites are also set to Allow in the Permissions section
  • Now, open Sink It for Reddit and tap the red Sink It Settings button . Here you’ll find all of the app’s tweaks divided into categories
  • Try tapping the Comments Upgrades button . Go through the list of adjustments and enable any that catch your eye. All your changes are applied automatically, there’s no Save button you have to press. You can now go to the other settings sections and make any changes you want
  • While most settings are enabled or disabled using a simple toggle, you can also add to your lists of favorite subreddits and banned subreddits using the relevant sections in Sink It’s settings
  • You’ll notice that some settings have colored dots next to them. These indicate which version of Reddit the features are supported on. Green dots refer to the new unified user interface (UI), while yellow ones are for old Reddit only. Red dots work for both old and new UIs on desktop, while blue dots denote support for both old and new UIs on mobile

T he Chrome Web Store has thousands of themes and extensions that add new visuals and features to your Chrome browser. Are you looking for a new Chromebook on a budget ? If you want to boost your productivity or change its appearance, here's how to explore the Google Chrome Web Store to see what upgrades and add-ons are available.

ChatGPT vs. Gemini: Which gives the better answers?

  • Select the three vertical dots in the upper-right corner of the address bar to see a menu of options.
  • Hover over the Extensions submenu, then select Visit Chrome Web Store .
  • A new tab opens, showing the Chrome Web Store extensions page. From there, browse extensions using the carousel at the top or by scrolling down and checking out the cards on the main page.
  • Choose the type of extension by selecting a category from the left sidebar. Google offers suggestions in the Recommended for you category and provides other categories, including Accessibility , Blogging , Productivity , and Shopping .
  • Or, type keywords in the search box in the upper-right corner to find particular tools and extensions that make it convenient to access the information you need.
  • Select the Themes option in the upper-left corner to browse the custom styles.

How to install Chrome extensions and themes

After you've found something you like, install the extension by opening it in the Chrome Web Store and selecting the Add to Chrome button in the upper-right corner. A popup window provides you with privacy and security information about the extension. Select Add extension to continue.

It's common for an extension to need permission to read and change data on websites you visit. Some extensions can be customized to restrict which websites they can access. All extensions can be deactivated and uninstalled if you want to take a break or remove them.

With a Chrome theme, choose Add to Chrome , and the new theme becomes active immediately.

How to use Chrome extensions

Some Chrome extensions begin working as soon as you install them, while others require some setup. You can access some extensions in the toolbar that appears to the right of the address bar. Toolbar extensions appear as icons. Click them to activate them, or right-click for more options.

To manage extensions:

  • Select the icon at the far right of the toolbar that looks like a jigsaw puzzle piece, then choose Manage Extensions from the popup menu.
  • Alternatively, use the more menu in the upper-right corner, hover over Extensions , and choose Manage Extensions .
  • A new tab opens, showing the extensions you installed on your computer.
  • You'll see a toggle switch that's blue when turned on and gray when turned off. There are also buttons to show more Details and to Remove an extension.

Open the Chrome Web Store from a Chromebook

ChromeOS is great for most computing needs, and our guide to the best Chromebooks can help if you want to switch away from Windows and macOS.

The Chrome browser is the primary interface on a Chromebook, so Chrome extensions are important. Use the methods mentioned above to open the Chrome Web Store from your Chrome browser.

You can also open the Chrome Web Store from the Launcher. Select the round button in the lower-left corner and type Web Store in the search box. When it appears in the list, choose it to open the Chrome Web Store in a browser tab. Pin it on your shelf when you're done with it so that it's easy to find again.

How to pin apps and websites to your Chromebook's shelf

What about chrome apps.

You might find references to Chrome apps online, but they are no longer supported except for Google Enterprise and Education customers and partners. Google said Chrome app support has been extended for these users "until at least January 2025." For everyone else, they are no longer accessible in the Chrome Web Store, and existing Chrome apps won't execute.

Google Chrome apps require a compatible web browser because they are built with web-friendly languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. These apps look similar to Windows and macOS apps and open in their own windows.

It was a great idea, and many Chrome apps were developed, but a new technology called progressive web apps (PWA) is a better option for web developers who want to create lightweight apps that run everywhere.

Open the Chrome Web Store from another browser

Several browsers are compatible with Chrome extensions and themes. For example, Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Brave browsers support Chrome extensions.

Apple's Safari browser supports extensions but is not compatible with Chrome extensions. However, you can install the Chrome browser on a Mac if you need to access a Chrome extension. Many Chrome extensions work in Firefox, but there are some incompatibilities . Check if your browser is supported by opening the Chrome Web Store using this link .

Are Chrome extensions available for Android and iOS?

Chrome extensions are designed for computers, not smartphones. The default browser on most Android phones is Chrome, which doesn't support extensions. On an iPhone, the default Safari browser only supports Safari extensions.

Some third-party mobile browsers support Chrome extensions, but extensions aren't made for small screens and might not work correctly on your smartphone.

Visit the Google Chrome Web Store and simplify your life
