Launched in 2010, Norwegian Epic was the first cruise ship in the industry to feature studio accommodations for solo travelers. Norwegian Cruise Line offers this category on nine of the 19 ships in its fleet, including the newest ship, Norwegian Viva. These cabins, at an average size of 100 square feet, are designed and priced with the solo traveler in mind. They have no single supplements – and studio rooms on board Norwegian Bliss even boast virtual windows.

Guests of the studios get access to the private Studio Lounge. In this exclusive space, you can socialize with other solo travelers and enjoy complimentary refreshments. There are also singles meetups throughout the voyage and plenty of fun-filled onboard activities to mingle with like-minded cruisers. Solo travelers can check out all the fun for singles on Norwegian Viva this winter on a cruise to the Caribbean , or in spring 2024 as the ship sets sail for the Mediterranean .

MSC Cruises offers interior and balcony solo cabins for single cruisers on its Meraviglia-class ships: the MSC Meraviglia, Bellissima, Grandiosa, Virtuosa and the newest vessel in the fleet, MSC Euribia. The second-newest ship, MSC World Europa, has 28 cabins – 10 Studio Interior and 18 Studio Ocean View staterooms – designed specifically for solo travelers. MSC World America, set to debut in 2025, will also feature the solo studio staterooms.

During voyages with MSC Cruises , single cruisers are invited to a complimentary, hosted cocktail party to mix and mingle with other solo travelers. The daily program is also an excellent source to discover additional activities, entertainment and opportunities to meet other cruisers. You'll have onboard special events like the themed 70s-inspired Flower Party and the White Party, where the ship is decked out in festive white decor and guests don their best white attire. In addition, there are various sports tournaments, or you can show off your culinary expertise during a MasterChef competition.

MSC's Caribbean and Bahamas cruises departing from Miami and New York City feature an overnight visit to Ocean Cay, the line's private island and marine reserve. While there, singles can participate in fun-filled evening activities like a Champagne Sunset Cruise or a glow paddleboarding excursion in the lagoon, then attend the lively Luna Libre Party and the lighthouse show.

Three of Holland America Line's newest ships each offer 12 solo cabins to accommodate single travelers: the Pinnacle-class Nieuw Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Konigsdam. These ocean view staterooms range in size from 127 to 172 square feet and feature the same amenities as the double occupancy cabins but with a double bed. The cruise line's Single Staterooms are priced for one person. If a guest chooses to book a different stateroom, single supplements for double occupancy cabins are as much as 100% over the standard fare, depending on the voyage and the cabin category.

Long committed to solo travelers, the line offers many activities where guests can meet other singles such as wine tastings, cocktail mixers, exercise classes, daily quizzes, sports challenges and more. If you're a solo traveler and a member of AARP, Holland America is now the exclusive cruise benefit provider to AARP's members. Solo cruisers will have access to an AARP member-only onboard credit that ranges from $50 to $200, depending on the itinerary and stateroom category.

For itineraries, Holland America's Alaska cruises and cruisetours are perfect for solo travelers, offering many opportunities to connect with fellow cruisers. Another favorite for singles is the line's fall voyages sailing from Boston to Québec City or Montreal.

Once on board the ship, solo cruisers will have countless options to engage and socialize with other travelers. When it comes to dining with Royal Caribbean , make a reservation at the Japanese restaurant Teppanyaki for an entertaining meal with new friends, or join fellow foodies for the intimate Chef's Table experience (the dining venues vary by ship). Singles can also participate in onboard activities like trivia contests, drink seminars, escape rooms, dance classes and pool parties.

If you need more thrills to stay busy and to meet people, Royal Caribbean's ships feature world-class shows and entertainment alongside adrenaline-pumping rides and attractions. The line's three intimate yacht-style cruise ships – World Navigator, World Traveller and the new World Voyager, whose inaugural season begins in Antarctica in November 2023 – are all-inclusive . Meals at all the dining venues, premium beverages and wines, gratuities, culturally immersive excursions, and more are included in the fare. With fewer than 200 guests on board, there's an atmosphere of conviviality on these ships – especially when exploring remote destinations with like-minded and adventurous travelers during expeditions in Antarctica and the Arctic.

Avalon's fleet of Suite Ships operates in Europe and Southeast Asia and features cabins with a minimum of 172 square feet. About 80% of the staterooms are Panorama Suites, which have 200 feet of living space, beds with a view and the river cruise industry's only open-air balcony. The Best Cruise Lines for Solo Travelers

Solo cruising has never been this good. Not only are more cruise lines adding solo cabins, but the single-traveler cabins aboard ships are also getting more spacious and luxurious.

And just because a cruise line doesn’t offer a solo cabin doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have to pay more to cruise alone, either. Some cruise lines waive or reduce single supplements that can double a solo traveler’s bill. These deals become especially frequent during the first quarter of the year,  a discount period known as “ wave season .”

River cruise lines are being especially savvy in courting solo travelers by “offering more attractive opportunities for those who like to travel in style by themselves,” says Joshua Harrell, chief marketing officer for the WorldVia Travel Group and the Travel Quest Network.

Whichever cruise line you choose, you’ll want to book early: The travel insurance search engine Squaremouth says its sales show a 64 percent increase in solo cruise travel this year from 2019.

Here's everything you need to know about single bookings aboard some of the best lines for solo cruisers.

All cruises featured in this story are independently selected by our editors. However, when you book something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian debuted a studio cabin in 2010 and was the first major cruise line to create accommodations for one. These cabins come in at just under 100 square feet—enough space for a full bed. They don’t offer sea views, but the cruise line does include access to a lounge where they can meet other solo travelers over snacks.

Norwegian's solo cabins are now on several ships, including the Norwegian Epi c, Norwegian Breakaway , Pride of America , and Norwegian Prima , which is set to debut this summer.

Holland America

Holland America's solo cabins are larger than Norwegian's, but you'll have to settle for a twin bed. Still, solo cruisers on Holland America’s Koningsdam , Niewuw Statendam , Rotterdam , and Ryndam ships can expect between 127 and 172 square feet of space onboard.

Best of all, each of Holland America’s solo suites comes with an ocean view.

Royal Caribbean Odyssey of the Seas. Pool Deck

The pool deck on board Royal Caribbean's new Odyssey of the Seas ship

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean has more single cruise cabins than the average cruise line. Half of the ships in its fleet offer solo cabins, but if you’re looking for a private balcony, you’ll want to book the Anthem of the Seas , Quantum of the Seas , Ovation of the Seas , Harmony of the Seas , Spectrum of the Seas or the line's newest ship, Odyssey of the Seas .

In addition to a private balcony that's perfect for sipping morning coffee, each of the single suites on these ships are nearly 200 square feet.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania is taking solo cruising to a whole new level with its newest solo suites. Its latest ship, Vista , debuting in 2023, includes six 270-square-foot solo cabins, each with a balcony and amenities including free laundry, room service, premium lounge access, and a bottle of Champagne. Each cabin features a memory foam bed, a separate seating area, and a private balcony.

The line is planning to add solo cabins to several additional ships this year, giving travelers even more options to sail solo.

Celebrity Cruises

If you're a solo cruiser who's in it for the view and not the private balcony, check out Celebrity Cruises' Infinite Veranda solo cabins. These cabins feature giant windows that create a space similar to a sunroom.

Infinite Veranda cabins are available on Celebrity Edge , Celebrity Apex , and the new Celebrity Beyond . Each ship has a range of single cabins: Celebrity Edge has 16 of them, while Celebrity Beyond has double that, with 32 solo rooms.

Atlas Ocean Voyages

Atlas Ocean Voyages doesn’t just give solo travelers their own suite—it also gives them butler service.

Atlas' first solo suites hit the seas this year onboard its debut ship, World Navigator . Each suite clocks in at just over 180 square feet and comes equipped with a queen-size bed, a 42-inch TV, and a shower complete with L'Occitane bath products. There's even a separate closet just for your shoes.

Cunard Line

If you're looking to make a transatlantic voyage, Cunard offers solo cabins on the Queen Mary 2 , the iconic ship known for its transatlantic crossings between London and New York. Although they only offer a twin-size bed, solo suites onboard the Queen Mary 2 are around 180 square feet and include ocean views. Two other Cunard ships, the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria , also offer single cabins, but some are interior rooms without ocean views.

This luxury cruise line doesn’t offer solo suites, but it also doesn’t charge solo cruisers double the price to book a cabin of their own.

Silversea, an all-inclusive cruise line known for its small, opulent ships and its discerning butler service, caps its single supplement at 25 percent of the cruise fare on select voyages. Of course, you’ll want to book early: Silversea’s solo cruise rates go up as departure dates get closer.

Ama Waterways

Ama Waterways' AmaCello features solo cabins

Ama Waterways

Ama Waterways has four ships with solo cabins: AmaDolce , AmaDante , AmaLyra , and AmaCello , which all sail European itineraries. On other ships, single supplements are 25 percent of the cruise fare for itineraries in Europe and Asia.

Avalon Waterways

Avalon Waterways waives single supplements on its European river cruises and on some itineraries in southeast Asia. About 10 percent of Avalon passengers are solo cruisers, but you’ll want to book early to join them. Only a portion of each ship’s staterooms are reserved for solo cruisers on each itinerary.

More cruise travelers in the past decade have been enjoying the freedom and flexibility that comes with setting off on a trip on your own. Of course, it’s an amazing and rewarding experience to share a cruise vacation with a loved one or a friend or family member. But sometimes, scheduling just doesn’t work out, and you are left with the choice: cruise by yourself, or don’t cruise at all.

Cabins for Solo Cruisers

Also, many people simply enjoy the liberating feeling of going it alone on their journeys.

Cruise lines have heard this message, and are reacting. Solo cabins are becoming more mainstream on cruise ships . This means solo cruising, which too often can be cost prohibitive because of the dreaded “single supplement” penalty is now more accessible than ever if you can find the right cruise ship . Always check the fares closely, though, because high demand for solo cabins combined with sales promotions on standard staterooms can mean that you still might get a better deal booking a regular  stateroom.

With that in mind, here is our list of the best cruise ships for solo cruisers.

The studio cabin on Norwegian Bliss

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line was the first in the industry to design ships with solo cruisers in mind, offering a revolutionary Studio Complex and Lounge space that truly makes solo travelers feel like they have a home onboard with fellow single cruisers. These cabins also do not carry a “single supplement” fee (a higher rate – up to double — typically charged to solo cruisers staying in standard staterooms).

Several Norwegian Cruise Line ships feature solo cabins. You can book them on Norwegian Epic (128 cabins), Norwegian Escape (82), Norwegian Bliss (82), Norwegian Breakaway (59), Norwegian Getaway (59) and Pride of America (four).

The Studios are specifically designed and priced for solo travelers , offering up to 100 square feet of space. These stylish cabins also come with exclusive key-card access to the Studio Complex and Lounge (no lounge on Pride of America). This is a private shared space that has drink and room service. In the lounge, you can get a snack like fresh-made cookies or enjoy your morning breakfast or coffee. It also features a big-screen TV and reading materials.

The studio cabin on <a href=

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas all offer 28 solo cabins , and  Harmony of the Seas  has 15 solo staterooms.

None of the solo cabins on Harmony of the Seas offer balconies, while Ovation, Quantum and Anthem feature interior cabins with virtual balconies and “Super Studio Ocean View with Balcony” solo cabins.

Cruise Compete

Several other Royal Caribbean cruise ships offer a handful of solo staterooms, all interiors. Adventure of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas, Jewel of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas and Serenade of the Seas have between two to five solo cabins .

All  of these Royal Caribbean solo cabins  carry no single supplement charge and range in size from 96 square feet to 199 square feet.

To keep up with the rising demand from cruisers who want to sail alone and don’t want to be penalized with the added cost of paying for a whole cabin on their own, Cunard refurbished its ships to offer solo staterooms. The new Britannia Single Staterooms on Queen Mary 2 (15 cabins), Queen Victoria (nine) and Queen Elizabeth (nine) offer oceanview  and interior rooms that range in size from 140 square feet to 180 square feet.

Cunard is a great choice, too, because of programming that appeals to solo cruisers. Set dining times allow passengers to join together with one another at assigned tables (solo cruisers are often seated together), and the ships also have gentlemen dance hosts who are there to help single cruisers fill their dance cards.

A solo stateroom on <a href=

Holland America’s biggest and newest ships have included solo cabins.  Koningsdam  and Nieuw Statendam each feature 12 staterooms designed for singles, with no single supplement charge. These cabins offer ocean views and range in size from 127 square feet to 172 square feet.

The Best Cruise Lines with Solo Cabins (and the Best Cruises for Singles)

It used to cost a small fortune if you wanted a cruise cabin to yourself, as you were basically paying the price for two people.

But then solo cruising became one of the hottest trends in travel.

Indeed, Google searches for “solo cruises” by U.S. users have recently  more than doubled .

“I've seen an increase year after year in the solo travel community, especially among single females,” says Shelby Frenette, a solo travel expert and manager of the TravelFun.Biz  agency, which caters to singles. “Their desire to travel is so strong that most major cruise lines are starting to design their ships with solo occupancy cabins to accommodate this growing population.”

Most importantly, they’re pricing these cabins for individual travelers. And they’re also waiving or reducing the dreaded “single supplement” fee, which charges vacationers for two full cruise fares even when they stay alone in a double-occupancy room. That supplementary cost can be a budget-busting 100% more.

But it’s not just affordability that defines a good cruise. To help lone travelers feel welcome on board, cruise lines are also rolling out additional opportunities for them to meet other singles at exclusive receptions, get-togethers, and group dining just for solo cruisers.

Unfortunately, demand still outstrips supply on most of these lines, so if you want one of these special rooms, you have to book early, and you should always make sure you’re getting a special single-cabin rate and not paying a single supplement to stay in a room categorized as a double.

Based on price, cabin options, and a solo-friendly environment, here are 10 lines that are now offering smoother sailing for cruisers traveling alone or who want a private room.  (Pictured above: a specially designed Studio cabin on the Norwegian Epic)

Cruise lines with solo accommodations

best solo cabins on cruises: best single cabins for cruising: celebrity cruises

Celebrity Cruises ’ commitment to singles is evident in its mast-high growth in solo bookings, up an annual 225% over the past two years. Perhaps that’s because its ships offer great options for cruisers on their own. Celebrity offers interior, windowless cabins to solo bookers, but the premium line's two newest vessels, Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Ascent (which launched in December 2023), each stock 32 single staterooms with the line’s so-named Infinite Veranda (pictured above). That's a hard-sided, ocean-facing balcony with motorized slide-down window that turns an interior sitting area into an oceanview space. That feature extends the 184 square feet of cabin space by an additional 42. Celebrity Apex features 24 of them, while Celebrity Edge (which debuted them in 2018) is home to 16. Each has a queen-size bed, rare for single rooms. Celebrity Silhouette has four inside digs-for-one at 103 square feet each.

These one-person cabins, which have the same upscale amenities as double-occupancy ones, charge no single supplements. The Infinite Veranda staterooms are especially popular, with 71% of Celebrity's solo travelers booking these rooms with a view. Guests on their own can also take advantage of special promotions that waive the single supplement in standard cabins, but only on select voyages.

Celebrity offers events for travelers on their own, including a gathering hosted by the activities team, which helps break the ice. An un-hosted solos table is also available every night for those who want to dine with new friends, but you can also eat alone if you choose. All that is why Celebrity Cruises won industry awards in the Solo Travel category from  Travel Weekly 's 2022 and 2023 Magellan Awards.

best solo cabins on cruises: best single cabins for cruising: Cunard

Cunard is famous for its elegant liner-style ships that evoke the Golden Age of ocean voyages. But in a departure from that traditional era, three of its four ships now offer solo cabins ranging from 178 to 183 square feet in size: Queen Mary 2 (15), Queen Victoria (nine), and Queen Elizabeth (nine, including one pictured above). All have twin-size beds and especially large windows with coveted ocean views, except for one inside cabin on both the Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth . Cunard's Queen Anne is not slated to include solo staterooms when it begins service in 2024.

Singles pay a solo fare for these cabins far less than the single supplement of 175% for staying in a double-occupancy stateroom.

Cunard also hosts coffee meet-ups and cocktail receptions for its solo guests. Select voyages also have “gentleman hosts” onboard to serve as dance partners and shore excursion escorts.

best solo cabins on cruises: best single cabins for cruising: Holland America

From its solo-oriented activities to its cabins for one, Holland America ’s commitment to singles is full steam ahead. Since 2016, it has introduced 12 single staterooms in each of its three Pinnacle Class ships, Nieuw Statendam , Rotterdam , and Koningsdam (pictured above). At 127 to 172 square feet each, they have ocean views and the same amenities as double-occupancy cabins but with a double bed.

The single cabins are priced for one. Single supplements for double-occupancy staterooms, meanwhile, are as much as 100% extra and are rarely reduced or waived.

But Holland America, which attracts older cruisers, stands out for its Single Partner Program, whereby singles can join a wide variety of activities for solo passengers, from mixers and cocktail parties to game nights, cooking classes, wine tastings, and line dancing. Plus, some shore excursions are geared just to singles, from solo parasailing and ATV adventures to private day touring. Finally, those traveling alone can also arrange to dine together.

best solo cabins on cruises: best single cabins for cruising: MSC Cruises

As European-owned MSC Cruises rapidly expands its fleet of 22 ships, it’s making leeway on accommodating travelers who are on their own. Six of its ships have a total of 136 cabins for one, 38 of which have windows and 20 with prized balconies. All have twin-size beds. The World America, set to debut in 2025, will also feature solo staterooms. MSC’s shipboard ambiance is international with a cosmopolitan vibe.

Solo cabins carry no single supplement on MSC. But a single traveler choosing between solo cabins and comparable interior or balcony ones designed for two would save an average of 40% for a balcony and 25% for an interior. Lone cruisers have to pay a single supplement of 100% if they book a double-occupancy cabin, which MSC sometimes discounts.

Solos looking to meet other single travelers can attend a special hosted cocktail party.

best solo cabins on cruises: best single cabins for cruising: Norwegian Cruise Line

The pioneer in solo cruising, Norwegian turned the tide when it introduced 128 studio cabins designed and priced exclusively for one on the Norwegian Epic back in 2010. Yes, they were small, at just 100 square feet, but they enabled solo travelers to consistently avoid the single supplement. Located on the inside, they had a full-size bed and a window feature, but not one that faced the water.

Today, this line known for its specialty dining is still trailblazing. It’s the first one to offer a wide variety of cabin categories dedicated to singles. As of Jan. 2, 2024, the line introduced solo inside, solo oceanview, and solo balcony categories, bringing to 1,500 the number of solo cabins across its 19-ship fleet—although some of those are regular double-occupancy rooms that are assigned single-occupancy status on a per-voyage basis . More than 150 Studio cabins feature true oceanview window rooms and more than 300 have balconies, a rarity for solo accommodations.

In addition, guests staying in the solo category staterooms can meet other single travelers, relax, and get cocktails during limited hours at the dedicated Studio Lounge (pictured above) for the exclusive use of guests who booked these cabins. Lounges are available on Norwegian Bliss , Norwegian Breakaway , Norwegian Encore , Norwegian Epic , Norwegian Escape , Norwegian Getaway , Pride of America , Norwegian Prima , and Norwegian Viva . It’s not surprising, then, that Norwegian was named Best Cruise Line for Solo Travelers six years in a row by Porthole Cruise and Travel Magazine and was named Best for Solo Travelers by CruiseCritic.com's U.S. editors in 2023.

best solo cabins on cruises: best single cabins for cruising: Oceania Cruises

Small, intimate, and easy to navigate, Oceania Cruises ’ six ships are especially conducive to solo travelers and the line is stepping up to meet the increased demand from this group. Its four 600-passenger ships— Regatta , Insignia , Nautica , and Sirena— each have 14 solo oceanview staterooms, while the newest ship, Vista (launched in May 2023), has six 270-square-foot solo cabins with prized oversized balcony verandas. Although these Concierge Level Veranda units only have twin beds (pictured above), they entitle cruisers to keycard-only access to a Concierge Lounge with extra amenities. Oceania’s upcoming 1,200-passenger ship Allura , scheduled to launch in 2025, will have solo accommodations similar to Vista ’s.

Solo cabins cost less than comparable double-occupancy rooms (though not quite half as much). But travelers can also book regular cabins with a reduced single supplement of up to 50% for specific categories, along with 2-for-1 Cruise Fare deals. Oceania also creates special opportunities on board for solo cruisers, including welcome cocktail receptions and group dining tables—the line is known for its high-quality cuisine.

best solo cabins on cruises: best single cabins for cruising: Royal Caribbean

Famous for its megaships—including the world’s largest ones for passenger cruises—and for first-at-sea attractions, Royal Caribbean knows how to stand out. If you want to sail on a behemoth vessel with a tidal wave of amenities and attractions, this line is for you, especially if you’re traveling alone.

Five of its blockbuster Quantum Class ships— Anthem of the Seas , Odyssey of the Seas , Ovation of the Seas , Quantum of the Seas , and Spectrum of the Seas —harbor 28 studio cabins for one. They represent a mix of inside cabins with virtual balconies (false windows that are digital screens projecting real-time views from outside; pictured above) and balcony rooms with 55-square-foot open-air terraces, generous for solo accommodations. Studios range in size from 101 to 119 square feet and have full-size beds but might lack features such as couches. Two additional vessels, Harmony of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas , offer 15 solo staterooms starting at 96 square feet located in both inside and outside locations. However, the highly anticipated Icon of the Seas,  new in January 2024 and the largest cruise ship ever, has no solo cabins.

Royal Caribbean's studio solo cabins don't charge a single supplement, while regular cabins come with single supplements up to 100% over standard double-occupancy fares.

best solo cabins on cruises: best single cabins for cruising: Virgin Voyages

Young, hip, and for adults only, Richard Branson’s Virgin Voyages is taking its appeal to sole cruisers seriously. Each of its superyacht-style ships— Scarlet Lady , Valiant Lady , and Resilient Lady— includes 46 cabins for one with full-size beds, including 40 Solo Insider rooms and six Solo Sea View ones that provide rare forward-facing views of the water. That's a significant number dedicated to travelers alone out of 1,330 cabins on each ship. At 105 to 130 square feet each, they may be smaller than some competitors, but they display the sleek, stylish design that’s a hallmark of the line.

Solo cabins are priced for one, while singles in a double-occupancy room pay about 20%–30% less than two people, a substantial savings compared to other lines. That extra amount is sometimes waived on special promotions.

Virgin’s young, adult-focused atmosphere hits the mark with sole cruisers looking to have fun with other singles. From an organized “grog walk” (Virginese for pub crawl) through the many shipboard bars to solo meet-ups to a dedicated solo travelers’ table in each signature restaurant, the line ensures lone travelers aren’t lonely. In fact, finding new friends seems like half the point.

Last updated: April 26th, 2023

Woman on a cruise

  • Find a Cruise

A solo cruise is an excellent vacation choice if you’re looking to experience exciting destinations around the world and make new friends along the way.

Sometimes you don’t want to wait to see a destination until you have a travel partner who can go with you. Maybe you just like the introspective time that a solo vacation can provide.

Traveling alone doesn’t mean you have to rough it, backpack, or do all the planning yourself.

If you’re considering taking a cruise vacation by yourself, here are some solo cruise tips to help make your journey an unforgettable experience.

Choose a Cruise Line That’s Solo-Friendly

Not all cruise lines are the same. If you’re planning your much-deserved vacation and you want to travel solo, pick a line that welcomes single travelers.

The spas and fitness facilities on board are second to none. There’s dazzling entertainment on every ship, whether you want to take a front row seat at the Martini Bar and watch the mixologists at work, or take in one of our state-of-the-art shows.

Celebrity is also one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly cruise lines in the business, too.

All this adds up to Celebrity Cruises being the perfect choice for solo travelers, something that has been recognized by the travel industry. Celebrity was the proud winner of the 2022 Solo Traveler Magellan Award, presented by leading travel industry publication Travel Weekly.

Single Staterooms on Celebrity Silhouette and all Edge-series Ships

Celebrity Apex cruise ship

Celebrity Apex

With every new ship, Celebrity has added more staterooms to its fleet that are solo-traveler friendly – and many of them have a private veranda, too. Don’t miss out on a trip of a lifetime because you don’t have a travel partner who can go with you.

Celebrity Beyond has 32 solo staterooms with an Infinite Veranda, as does the new Celebrity Ascent. Celebrity Apex features 24, while Celebrity Edge is home to 16 solo staterooms. Celebrity Silhouette will also have 4 inside single staterooms perfect for solo guests.

On Edge-series ships, the larger single stateroom with infinite veranda is perfect for solo cruise guests, a generous 184 square feet including the veranda space.

The infinite veranda isn’t like a normal cruise ship balcony. With the push of a button, the doors to your veranda seamlessly open and fold into the sides of the room, bringing the outdoors in, making it perfect for those who love to soak up the sun and the views from their own private space.

Or choose the Galapagos Islands, where you’ll share life-affirming adventures with fellow travelers every day, gathering together in the evenings to swap stories.

There is no shortage of options for cruisers who are traveling solo.

What About Solo Cruises For Seniors?

Tips For Making New Friends During Your Solo Cruise

People hanging out at Craft Social

Craft Social

Just because you’re cruising solo doesn’t mean you have to be alone, unless you want to be, of course. Here are a few ways to make friends—and memories—onboard.

Get to Know the Crew During Your Solo Cruise

One of the best things about sailing with Celebrity is the friendly, engaging crew from all around the world. Many guests enjoy talking with them and learning about the area of the globe they’re from.

Bartender crafting drinks

World Class Bar

Finding a bartender you get along with so you can have your own “local” bar on the ship is an easy way to feel comfortable in a lounge while cruising solo.

Get to know your cruise director, who you’ll often see walking around the ship. If they know you’re a solo cruise passenger, they may give you some insider tips on upcoming activities or entertainment you won’t want to miss.

Join New, Dedicated Events for Solo Travelers

View of Eden aboard Celebrity Cruises

Meet fellow solos in a friendly environment at Celebrity Cruises’ new Solo Travelers’ Gathering and Dinner, hosted by the Activity Team.

Check the time in your Celebrity App or Celebrity Today daily program and head for the Sky Lounge (on Millennium and Solstice-series ships) or luscious Eden on Edge-series ships, where you can meet fellow solo travelers. The friendly Activity Team will help break the ice.

People on an excursion in the Galapagos Islands

The Shore Excursions team will be present to facilitate bookings should you meet a potential buddy to join you for excursions.

There will also be a special solos’ table at dinner that night, and an unhosted solos’ table every night thereafter for anybody who is enjoying the company of new friends for dinner. This is the perfect opportunity to get together with other people traveling solo.

Get Out & Mingle

You might be tempted to unwind in your stateroom after busy days ashore. However, spending time in public spaces on the ship is a great way to meet new people.

People hanging out at night on a cruise

Celebrity Edge

Strike up a conversation and make some new friends on the very first night of the cruise. Perch at the bar for drinks if you feel awkward sitting alone at a table. Get chatting on shore excursions, and join group activities on board.

Celebrity’s ships are equipped with high-speed WiFi so it’s easy and convenient to start a WhatsApp group to arrange activities and meet-ups with newfound friends.

People playing casino

Say Yes to Dining With New People

Joining people for dinner is a great way to make friends and have a fun meal at the Main Restaurant or in a specialty restaurant.

People laughing while eating

People will likely be intrigued by you traveling on your own, want to get to know you better, and enhance their own dining experience. Even couples like to socialize and meet new people on vacation. Since you’re all travelers who enjoy seeing the world, it’s easy to swap travel stories.

The solos’ table is also always an option. Sitting here is a great way to meet other adventurous solo travelers and swap stories.

Opt for an Assigned Seating Time for Dinner

As a solo cruise traveler, you may benefit more from doing a traditional assigned seating time instead of dining at different times.

With an assigned seating time, you’ll be sat at the same table each night with other cruise passengers and the same crew waiting on you. It will give you some familiarity as your tablemates, server, and sommelier get to know you and your dining preferences—and sparkling personality!

Woman raising glass for a toast

If you don’t feel totally compatible with the other folks at your table, talk to the maître d’ and ask for a different table.

If you’re seated at a table on your own and feel self-conscious, have a book or journal on hand. A journal is a lovely way to pass the time at dinner, giving you the opportunity to reflect on the day and write about all the amazing things you saw in port or did on the ship.

Book Shore Excursions Through the Cruise Line

People on a train in Alaska

Celebrity’s shore excursions highlight the best parts of a destination and provide unforgettable experiences. Bond with fellow passengers by exploring the port together. You’ll have the chance to run into them again on the ship for more fun and conversation.

When you book a shore excursion, you know you’ll be spending your day surrounded by other travelers on your ship. Most ports have multiple ships calling at them each day, so it’s better to spend the day making new friends with people who will board your ship at the end of the day.

Woman preparing for a zipline

Choose an excursion that features a hands-on activity. This gets people out of their element and provides easy conversation starters.

Chatting with others while hiking through a rainforest or waiting on a zip-lining platform can lead to fun conversations. Choosing a tour like a wine tasting or a cooking class is a great way to break the ice with fellow passengers.

Bus tour in San Francisco, California

San Francisco, California

If you go on a sightseeing shore excursion on a bus, try to sit up near the front so you’re close to the guide. They’ll usually be open to conversations and are a wealth of knowledge on the destination you’re visiting.

You can ask questions and also learn about what it’s like to live there. It’s a way to have some socialization throughout your solo cruise day in port while also learning more about the city or town you’re visiting.

People walking to the boat for an excursion

The best part? All the details are taken care of for you. You’ll be conveniently guided right to your shore excursion transportation from the ship. You’re guaranteed to be back to the ship in time before it leaves for the next port.

Take Classes Onboard

Sommelier discussing wine to guests

Cellar Masters

Join in beverage and culinary programs on board and mingle with like-minded passengers who, like you, appreciate a glass of fine wine or an expertly prepared meal. Onboard classes and seminars give you the chance to see cooking demonstrations, learn about the art of wine tasting, and more. You can even create your own wine blend onboard.

If wine isn’t your thing, you can learn the art of bartending in a Mixology 101 class. Sample a martini flight at the Martini Bar. Into whisky? Try the Macallan Flight Experience, which lets you taste a trio of whiskies. Or join one of the gaming classes in the casino; once you’re confident to try your luck at the tables, it’s easy to strike up a conversation.

Yoga class aboard Celebrity Cruises

If you like to work out, the classes at the Fitness Center are a great way to meet like-minded travelers. Workout classes on cruise ships tend to attract a core of enthusiasts, after the initial well-intentioned rush during the first day of the cruise, and you could find yourself making plans to meet new friends every day for yoga, or F45.

Cruise Solo – the best cruises with single cabins

Best cruises with single cabins for your solo cruise

Travel solo and experience a fantastic vacation on cruises with single cabins. Dare to see the world on your terms and make new friends at the same time. You need to be a little bit bold.

Just like when traveling with family or friends, there is much to consider when choosing to cruise solo. Consider what the cruise line can offer, the facilities on board the cruise ship, your budget, and the best itineraries for cruises with single cabins.

But one thing that makes some cruise lines stand out from the rest if you travel alone – is the opportunity to meet other solo travelers.

Going on a cruise alone doesn’t have to be that different from going with the company – if you pick a cruise line that focuses on solo cabins, solo guest events, and facilities on board.

In this article, we tell you which major cruise lines successfully offer single independent travelers the opportunity to book and cruise solo. We answer common questions and give you our five best tips for cruising solo.

Quick navigation

Cruise solo with the best cruise lines

Many of the major cruise lines are now paying more attention to guests wanting to cruise solo, and there are more and more cruises with single cabins than ever before.

Not long ago, the only option was to book a double cabin for single occupancy, where you would inevitably pay a costly single-room supplement rate.

Cruise lines are designing newer ships to offer small single cabins near other single cabins.

And some even offer lounges solely for guests cruising by themselves, making your chance of meeting like-minded travelers on board good!

So which cruise lines are we talking about?

Norwegian Cruise Line – a trendsetter for solo cruise guests

Norwegian Cruise Line started the trend and is still one of the best. They allocate many cabins on board as studio cabins for single occupancy.

They also go one step further and offer beautiful lounges for the solo cruising guest if you wish.

This solo lounge is excellent for relaxing, eating breakfast, and getting refreshments. And you can be sure to meet others traveling alone as no other guest category is allowed there.

Some of the cruises offered by Norwegian Cruise Line even go as far as to provide solo guests with a solo host that coordinates ship activities which you can join or not; it’s up to you.

The amount of mingling you choose depends on your desired sailing experience.

Seabourn offers super luxury for the solo traveler

Seabourn is an ultra-luxury cruise line and is very popular for those wanting to cruise solo in true style.

You can expect a luxury cruising experience at the most well-known places in the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, the Caribbean, and Alaska. Plus, more exclusive destinations include Antarctica & Patagonia, the Arctic, and the Amazon.

They even offer private air and hotel packages and transportation options so you can book a complete solo traveler package with them.

Solo cabins with Saga for the age 50+ guests in mind

Then there is Saga Cruises. This British-based company has long focused on the 50+ age group, and solo travelers are well catered for with many single cabins on their cruise ships.

Their newest ship, Spirit of Discovery, carries around just 1000 guests. All cabins are balcony cabins, including the 109 single-occupancy cabins on board.

These cabins offer different price categories depending on how large you want: standard, superior, deluxe, or suite. And WiFi is accessible all over the ship, so you don’t need to worry about making sure you buy a WiFi package for single use; it’s all included.

The best cruise lines offering solo cabins

Then followed more cruise lines wanting to attract solo cruising guests. All of these cruise lines offer solo cabins:

  • Norwegian Cruise Line – Viva, Getaway, Breakaway, Prima, Bliss Escape, Epic, Encore, Pride of America
  • Saga – Spirit of Discovery, Spirit of Adventure
  • Royal Caribbean – Wonder of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas, Odyssey of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Adventure of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas, Jewel of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas
  • P & O Cruises – Azure, Arcadia, Aurora, Ventura, Iona, Arvia, Britannia
  • Cunard – Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria
  • Holland America – Koningsdam, Nieuw Statendam, Nieuw Rotterdam
  • Costa Cruises – Magica, Fascnosa Favolosa, Pacifica, Diadema
  • MSC Cruises – Meriviglia, Grandiosa, Bellissima, Virtuosa
  • Celebrity Cruises – Celebrity Edge, Celebrity Apex
  • Virgin Voyages – Scarlet Lady, Resilient Lady, Valiant Lady

How do I find the right solo cruise for me?

When researching the cost of cruising solo, please speak to the different cruise lines and find their price point for a cabin type you are interested in. Then find out what’s included.

You can then speak to 3 or 4 more cruise lines and find a comparative price for the same cabin type. From here, you can assess your budget.

When you have decided on your destination, look at the itineraries and destinations you will visit.

When cruising solo, the destinations often stand in focus rather than the ship itself. As most solo cabins can be found on newer ships, you know you will travel in style. And it could, in the end, come down to where you can get the best value for your money.

But be fussy and take your time. Research properly and know what you are getting for your money before you book. Before contacting the cruise lines, be sure to write down all the questions to ask to kick-start your planning .

Joining forums, group chats, or Facebook groups will give you an insight into other guests’ solo cruising experiences, which will perhaps help you in your decision-making.

When is the best time to book cruises with single cabins?

One of the challenges when booking a solo cruise is not leaving it too late. The number of cruises with single cabins is limited, and demand is often high.

Book well in advance. Cruises are often bookable about one year to 18 months before the sailing date.

You can keep an eye on pricing by signing up for the cruise lines’ newsletters, looking out for special price alerts or campaigns, and joining solo cruising forums.

And do remember to frequently check the price of your cabin category on the cruise lines’ website even after booking.

Remember, if the price of your chosen cabin category becomes cheaper after you have booked and paid your deposit, contact the cruise line immediately and ask for the same price reduction on your booking.

Remember to retain any OBC (onboard credit) or special offers in your original booking.

And don’t forget to look for a bargain price on a standard cabin meant for two. Finding great prices on double occupancy cabins is possible, especially if the specific cabin number is not assigned when booking.

In that case, you will be allocated a cabin closer to departure. This is an excellent option if you find a good deal; less expensive than a solo cabin would have cost, and you are flexible on where on board your cabin is located.

Dining solo

Book a large table with other guests if you don’t want to eat alone. You can choose a table for 4, 6, 8, or 10 guests and be part of a group each evening. Very often, this is the easiest way to get to know other guests.

What if you are dining at a table where you do not enjoy the company? Visit the maître d’ before you dine again and get assigned a different table.

When is the best time to travel as a solo guest?

Many solo travelers choose to avoid peak times when there are often families traveling with children. That is, during the summer holiday, Halloween, and even Christmas.

More adults and fewer children on board mean a greater chance of meeting more adult guests traveling solo.

Our 5 best solo cruising tips

1. start making contacts and friends before you travel.

Joining a Facebook group for your cruise is an excellent way to connect with fellow travelers. If you cannot find a Facebook group for your cruise, consider starting one!

By joining solo cruising forums before and after booking, you can get to know other solo travelers even before climbing on board.

2. Book shore excursions to get to know your fellow traveler

If you are a social animal and love company but travel solo, we suggest joining group shore excursions. It’s an excellent way to get to know your fellow travelers. It is also a safer way of traveling and an easy way to mingle.

3. Join in onboard activities

Fitness classes, dance classes, and other onboard activities, such as trivia quizzes or listening to live bands, are good ways to meet others. Be bold and dare to join in – it can be great fun.

4. Book through a cruise specialist with a focus on the solo traveler

Consider working together with a travel company that focuses on solo travelers. Look for tips online and through forums about travel agents who can specifically help you with cruising for the solo traveler.

Then you can decide if you prefer to book with the cruise line or a travel agent .

5. Smaller ships offer more intimate cruising experiences

Look at smaller ships that have solo cabins. It’s much easier to integrate with others on smaller ships. Small group excursions and events mean you won’t get lost in the crowd.

  • Cruise ship nightlife offers a variety of venues catering to different tastes, providing ample opportunities to meet and mingle with fellow passengers who share a love for music and dancing.

Choose the Right Cruise Line

If you want to guarantee an exhilarating and unforgettable experience, don’t miss out on choosing the perfect cruise line for your ultimate pleasure-seeking adventure. When it comes to cruise line selection, finding singles can be a key factor in ensuring a successful and exciting journey. Some cruise lines are known for attracting a younger crowd or offering specific activities geared towards mingling and socializing.

Researching different cruise lines will help you identify those that cater to solo travelers seeking romance or casual encounters. By carefully selecting the right cruise line, you’ll increase your chances of having an unforgettable time while sailing the seas and embarking on exciting new adventures with fellow passengers.

When it comes to pick the right cruise itinerary…

Pick the Right Cruise Itinerary

Choosing the perfect cruise itinerary is like finding a treasure map that leads to unforgettable adventures. It’s important to research destinations beforehand to ensure you’re visiting places that align with your interests.

Whether it’s exploring ancient ruins in Greece or swimming with dolphins in the Caribbean, knowing what each port has to offer will enhance your experience.

Once you’ve decided on the destinations, plan your shore excursions accordingly. Whether it’s booking a snorkeling trip or a guided tour of local landmarks, having a plan in place will make the most of your time ashore.

Stand tall, make eye contact, and smile genuinely to make yourself more approachable. Avoid crossing your arms or looking down at the ground, as these can give off signals of disinterest or insecurity.

Remember that everyone on the cruise is there to have a good time and meet new people. Don’t be afraid to strike up conversations with fellow passengers at onboard events and activities. Engage in group activities like trivia nights or dance lessons where you can showcase your personality and interact with others naturally.

Transitioning into socializing at onboard events and activities, let’s explore how these opportunities can further enhance your chances of making meaningful connections during your cruise experience.

Socialize at Onboard Events and Activities

To maximize your chances of making meaningful connections during your cruise experience, be sure to dive headfirst into the vibrant social scene at onboard events and activities. Making friends on a cruise is easier than you might think. By joining group activities such as trivia nights, dance classes, or sports tournaments, you’ll have ample opportunities to meet like-minded individuals who share similar interests. Engaging in conversations and showing genuine interest in others will help create lasting connections. To add an extra level of sophistication to your networking skills, consider using the following table format:

By actively participating in these events and forging new friendships, you can enhance your overall cruise experience. Transitioning into the next section about utilizing online dating apps allows you to explore additional avenues for meeting potential partners while onboard.

Utilize Online Dating Apps

Utilizing online dating apps can be a convenient and fun way to expand your social circle while onboard the cruise. Creating a profile on these apps allows you to showcase your interests and personality, giving others a glimpse into who you are.

It’s important to take the time to craft an engaging and honest profile that will attract like-minded individuals. Additionally, setting your preferences on these apps can help you connect with people who share similar interests or desires. Whether you’re looking for a casual fling or something more serious, being clear about what you’re seeking can increase your chances of finding compatible matches.

By utilizing online dating apps, you open yourself up to a world of potential connections and exciting encounters while cruising.

Now let’s explore how to take advantage of adult-only areas onboard the ship without compromising comfort or privacy.

Take Advantage of Adult-Only Areas

Passengers can take advantage of adult-only areas on the ship to find a sanctuary away from family-friendly zones. These areas provide an exclusive space for like-minded individuals to relax and connect in a more intimate setting.

Adult-only pools are perfect for unwinding and enjoying quality time with potential partners. Private cabins offer privacy for those looking to retreat from public spaces and engage in more personal encounters.

After indulging in these secluded spots, passengers can transition into enjoying the vibrant nightlife and entertainment options on board. With live music, themed parties, and performances, there are plenty of opportunities to meet new people and create memorable experiences.

Enjoy the Nightlife and Entertainment

Immerse yourself in the vibrant nightlife and entertainment options available on board, where you can dance the night away under dazzling lights and experience unforgettable performances. Here are four reasons why the nightlife on a cruise ship is perfect for meeting new people and potentially finding romance:

Nightclub hopping: Cruise ships offer a variety of nightclubs catering to different tastes, from sleek lounges to energetic dance floors. Explore different venues and mingle with fellow passengers who share your love for music and dancing.

Live music performances: Enjoy live bands or talented DJs spinning tracks that will keep you grooving all night long. The lively atmosphere creates an ideal setting to strike up conversations with other cruisers who appreciate the same tunes.

Themed parties: Cruise ships often host themed parties that provide an opportunity to let loose, dress up, and meet like-minded individuals who enjoy similar interests or hobbies.

Late-night activities: Take advantage of late-night comedy shows, karaoke contests, or game nights where you can showcase your skills while engaging with others in a fun-filled environment.

As you navigate through the vibrant nightlife scene onboard, it’s important to remember to communicate clearly and respectfully when approaching potential romantic interests—a topic we’ll explore further in the next section about ‘communicate clearly and respectfully.’

Communicate Clearly and Respectfully

After enjoying the vibrant nightlife and entertainment on a cruise, it’s crucial to communicate clearly and respectfully when pursuing intimate encounters.

Clear communication is key. Establish mutual understanding and ensure both parties are on the same page. Set boundaries and discuss expectations openly before engaging in any physical activity. This helps avoid misunderstandings and promotes a safe and consensual environment for everyone involved.

When communicating your desires and limits, be direct yet respectful. Listen attentively to your potential partner’s needs as well. Openly discussing consent and boundaries creates an atmosphere of trust, enhancing the overall experience for both individuals.

Transitioning into the subsequent section about ‘practice safe and consensual intimacy,’ it’s essential to prioritize personal safety while exploring these connections at sea.

Practice Safe and Consensual Intimacy

When engaging in intimate encounters on a cruise, it is crucial to prioritize personal safety and foster a consensual environment. Consent education plays a vital role in creating an atmosphere where all parties involved feel comfortable and respected.

To ensure a consensual experience, it is important to communicate openly and honestly. This means discussing boundaries and desires with everyone involved. Consent should be ongoing throughout any sexual encounter, with both parties actively giving enthusiastic agreement every step of the way.

In addition to consent, practicing safe sex is essential. This helps protect oneself and others from sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or unwanted pregnancies. It is advisable to always carry condoms or other forms of contraception, as they may not be readily available onboard.

By prioritizing consent education and implementing safe sex practices, we can create an enjoyable and fulfilling experience for all involved while maintaining personal safety.

Are there any age restrictions on cruise ships when it comes to engaging in intimate activities?

There are age restrictions on cruise ships when it comes to engaging in intimate activities. Privacy maintenance is taken seriously, and there are usually guidelines in place to ensure the comfort and safety of all passengers.

How can I maintain my privacy while onboard a cruise ship?

To maintain privacy onboard a cruise ship, I recommend following cruise ship safety precautions such as always locking your cabin door and using the do not disturb sign. Additionally, avoid sharing personal information with strangers and be cautious of public areas with limited privacy.

What are some common misconceptions about hooking up on a cruise?

Common misconceptions about cruise hookups are plentiful. Debunking cruise hookup stereotypes, I can confidently say that it’s not all about wild parties and promiscuity. Many people seek genuine connections and meaningful relationships onboard.

Is it possible to meet other singles outside of onboard events and activities?

Yes, it is possible to meet other singles outside of onboard events. By exploring the ship’s various venues and socializing with fellow passengers, you may come across unexpected romantic connections in places like lounges, bars, or even during shore excursions.

Are there any unwritten rules or etiquette guidelines to follow when trying to find a romantic connection on a cruise?

When seeking a romantic connection on a cruise, it’s important to be mindful of unwritten rules and etiquette guidelines. Respect personal boundaries, engage in polite conversation, and remember that consent is paramount.

In conclusion, getting laid on a cruise can be an exciting and fulfilling experience. By following the tips mentioned throughout this article, you can increase your chances of finding a connection with someone special.

First, choose the right cruise line and itinerary. Some cruise lines cater more to singles and offer more opportunities for socializing and meeting new people. Research different cruise options and choose one that aligns with your interests and desires.

Next, dress to impress. Make sure you pack appropriate attire for both daytime activities and nighttime events. Dressing well can boost your confidence and attract potential partners.

Socializing at onboard events is another key to success. Take advantage of the various activities and parties offered on the cruise. Engage in conversations, be approachable, and show genuine interest in others.

Remember to communicate clearly and respectfully. Consent is crucial, so make sure to establish boundaries and ask for consent before engaging in any intimate activities. Respect the decisions and boundaries of others as well.

Practice safe intimacy. Always carry and use protection to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections. Be responsible and prioritize your health and the health of others.

Lastly, enjoy yourself! Relax, have fun, and let your desires flow freely on the open seas. Remember that the main goal is to have a great time and make lasting memories.

So, go ahead and embark on your cruise adventure with confidence. Follow these tips, be open to new experiences, and who knows, you might just find yourself having a memorable encounter on the high seas.

Travel Solo Cruise List – Which Ships Have Solo Cabins, How to Avoid Single Supplement and Have Fun Solo

Eurodam Pool Deck Chairs to Alaska

I was on a recent twitter cruise chat and asked the cruise line representative “do you have any solo cabins or will you waive the single supplement on any sailings” and then crickets.  They go dark and no longer engage with me.  Ignoring a large part of the travel community – the solo traveler (not the single traveler because you can be a solo traveler and not be single) cruise lines continue to leave piles of money on the table in my opinion. I like to say “a cruise is a destination appetizer so you know if you want to return and explore deeper”.  Cruises have pros/cons but for the solo traveler it’s a wonderful way to travel around the world and see a good number of destinations in one trip.  Unpack once, have the safety to do as much or as little as you want.  Be social or be anti-social – there are no rules.  If you want to cruise solo, the big question is “Which Ships Have Solo Cabins”?  I’ve tried my best to put together a list of ships and current solo cabin allocations.  Note that the numbers can change but this is a starting point for your cruise research.

My Solo Cruise Vacations

While I’ve sailed solo on a few cruise lines (Princess, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Disney, Norwegian) and had to (begrudgingly)  pay the single supplement for the cabin  there has been a some progress (albeit slow) in the cruise industry to add single/solo cabins to a few new ships and retrofit a few older ships when in dry dock. I’ve written my review of the NCL Studio Cabin and Norwegian EPIC Solo Lounge based on my transatlantic sailing Miami to Barcelona, I thought it might be nice to know what other options are out there to sail in a solo cabin.  Norwegian started with the solo cabins on NCL Epic in 2010 and more than a decade later, I’m still talking about changes that are needed in the cruise industry to address the solo traveler.

Manly Beach in Sydney Australia Cruise Ship Solo

When I sailed on the Princess Emerald (no solo cabins) to the Baltics from Copenhagen, there was a 50% deal that made the single supplement fit my budget for an interior cabin but solo travelers are charged anywhere from 150-200% of the advertised per person rate. I met a couple onboard that refused to spend any money on the cruise whereas I booked a few cruise tours, wine tasting, added wine to my meal, etc.  At the end of the day, the cruise made more money from me, the solo traveler, than the couple.

Solo Cruise Observations

  • I applaud Cunard for recognizing the declining need for a photo gallery and casino and reusing the space to add single cabins on the Queen Mary 2. Fifteen ocean view cabins is a wonderful start.
  • I’m excited for the Celebrity EDGE Single Verandah cabins but they are so many categories above the lowest interior room that it might be priced out for me.  It will be luxury – but luxury at a price.
  • You can save money with guaranteed cabin which means the cruise line will assign your cabin. You can’t choose the cabin location. If you absolutely must be mid-ship, a guaranteed room is not for you.
  • Repositioning (aka crossings, transatlantic, transpacific, etc. ) cruises can be a fantastic deal for solos – longer sea days and you go from point A to point B
  • Don’t be surprised when the single solo cabins are the first to get sold out. On Norwegian Pride of America which sails the Hawaiian Islands year round, there are only 4 solo cabins.
  • If this is your first time cruising solo, it might be best to connect with a cruise specialist to help match you with the right cruise line, ship and itinerary because there is so much choice it becomes paralyzing to pick
  • Read my Travel Solo Tips and First Time Cruise Tips and Cruise Budget Planner

Note that the following is to the best of my knowledge and the cruise lines can change at any time.  Given the moving target of fares, promotions and such, I’ve not included pricing except for the Queen Mary 2 sailing in November since that is pretty much set.

The American Cruise Lines – Solo Cabins

Generally considered “American Cruise Lines” given the overall make up of the cruise ship passengers skews American guests except in the Asian market.  For those of us in the U.S., these are the major cruise players in advertisments, promotions and social media.

Note: The pandemic has upended cruising, ships and capacity so the solo/single cabins and ships may be on hiatus or no longer in service.  Best to check each cruise line website.

Cunard Cruise Lines Single Cabins

The luxury Cunard ship line recently added 15 single cabins to the Queen Mary 2 when the ship was renovated in dry dock.  The category code is KB and KC and located mid-ship on deck 2 and deck 3 as the area used to be the Photo Gallery and part of a casino (both going out of favor in my opinion) so the cabins have windows! The cabins have a twin bed and are between 159-162 sq. ft.  Cunard recently added solo cabins, Britannia Single Staterooms to the other ships in their fleet.  Cunard do transatlantic sailings to/from New York and Southampton, England as well as intensive itineraries that are a month or longer.  The ships are luxury, skew older demographic and have a Canyon Ranch Spa onboard.

Recent pricing for a New York to Southampton, England crossing of 7 days were $1,586 in November vs. $699 per person for inside cabin (single supplement fare is $1,398) plus taxes/fees. So you are paying a bit more for less space but for a window view of the water. If you have points for a one way flight to New York or London, this is a nice, leisurely way to return home.

  • Cunard Queen Mary 2 – 15 Ocean view (twin bed) solo single cabins
  • Cunard Queen Elizabeth – 8 outside / 1 interior solo cabin
  • Cunard Queen Victoria – 8 outside / 1 interior solo cabin

NYC Skyline view Sailing Cunard Cruise Line Single Cabins

Royal Caribbean Solo Cabins

Venice Italy Airbnb San Marco Apartment canal view

The newest ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet, Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas offer interior (with virtual view) and ocean view options for solo cabins with space of 101-119 sq. ft. and full size beds while others offer twin bed in the smaller space on their other ships. The balcony category is the most interesting to me since the other ships are all inside cabins.  A new feature is the virtual balcony view on the interior rooms of some ships.

  • Anthem of the Seas – Interior (full bed) 14 solo cabins / Ocean view 12 solo Cabins
  • Adventure of the Seas – Interior (twin bed) 5 solo cabins
  • Brilliance of the Seas – Interior (twin bed) 3 solo cabins
  • Harmony of the Seas – Interior (full bed) 3 solo cabins / Ocean view 12 solo cabins (average 96 sq. ft.)
  • Jewel of the Seas – Interior (twin bed) 3 solo cabins
  • Mariner of the Seas – Interior (twin bed) 2 solo cabins
  • Ovation of the Seas – Interior (full bed) 16 solo cabins / Ocean view 12 solo cabins
  • Quantum of the Seas – Interior (full bed) 16 solo cabins / Ocean view 12 solo cabins
  • Radiance of the Seas – Interior (twin bed) 3 solo cabins
  • Serenade of the Seas – Interior (twin bed) 3 solo cabins

There are no suites for solo passengers so you would need to book that at the 200% single supplement as you would with other cabin categories of interest that provide more space.  Honestly, you need to sleep and shower in your cabin in my experience so the space doesn’t need to be that much for an added cost.  Note that single supplement payments will give you 2x Crown & Anchor loyalty points whereas booking a solo cabin will only give you 1x so if you are keen to move up in the elite levels this might be a consideration for which cabin to book.  Also, sometimes given the deals at hand, the regular room with single supplement might often cost less.  So do your research and if needed reach out to a cruise specialist if you can’t find the solo cabins online to book.  They do sell out quickly.

Celebrity Cruises Edge Solo Cabin

If there is one addition I’m excited for it’s the Celebrity Edge ship with 16 Edge Verandah solo cabins.  The category code is much higher than the normal inside cabin be warned as they are verandah (balcony) level.  Located on forward deck 6, there are 16 solo cabins that mirror the regular infinite verandah cabins but without the couch (do you ever use the couch when traveling solo?  I don’t). With approximately 142 sq. ft. which includes balcony, these will be an indulgence for the luxury solo traveler.

Celebrity is a favorite line because of the wellness spa menus, entertainment and self-service wine kiosks – sadly they don’t offer solo cabins on their other ships.  I first sailed solo with Celebrity on Constellation “Connie” from Istanbul to visit Turkey and the Greek Islands.  My recent solo cruise on Celebrity Edge sailing was awesome and with the cruise bid upgrade to Aqua Class , it was fabulous!

  • Celebrity Edge Single Cabin – Edge Single Verandah 16 swoon worthy single cabins

Celebrity cruise Constellation

Norwegian Cruise Lines – NCL Solo Studio Cabins

Norwegian Bliss Solo Studio Cabin Single

Norwegian Solo Studio Cabin wins the award for innovation in the solo traveler space.  The studio cabins are inside rooms of 100 sq. ft. with a double bed! Not a twin bed.  The cabins are generally over two decks and connected with an inside stairway and solo lounge with a bar, vending machines, coffee area, televisions and living room to work or relax in.  There’s a reason these studio cabins sell out so quickly – they are really nice and provide a pleasant journey.  For the single traveler, the group traveling that each want their own cabin or for the multi-generation family that has grand mom, aunt or uncle traveling that don’t want to share a cabin (my mom snores so we each get our own cabin).

  • Norwegian Epic – 128 solo studio cabins
  • Norwegian Breakaway – 59 solo studio cabins
  • Norwegian Getaway – 59 solo studio cabins
  • Norwegian Escape – 82 solo studio cabins
  • Norwegian Bliss – 82 solo studio cabins
  • Norwegian Pride of America – 4 solo cabins

The category is Studio. Norwegian has even added solo cabins to their Hawaiian cruise, Pride of America, which sails year round. There are only four cabins but if you are keen to visit Hawaii and the Hawaiian islands now you can.  Note that depending on the specials and deals, the studio option might cost more than the single supplement in an interior room category.  Studio Lounge access is included in the Studio booking and those not in the Studios can visit the lounge during Solo Happy Hours.

Holland America Line Solo Cabins

The Nieuw Statendam solo cabins will be ocean view and artfully inspired. With only twelve single cabins, it will probably be the first to sell out.  Holland America has an older demographic sailing so it will be interesting to see how these solo cabins do with older or younger travelers especially on a cruise to Alaska . The average space is larger than most at 127-172 sq. ft. but have a twin bed. I liked that on Holland America each cabin gets a plush robe to use as well as a daily fruit basket (you can choose your fruit from the list or ask the room attendant for a fruit not on the list).

  • Holland America Nieuw Statendam – 12 Ocean view (twin bed) solo cabins
  • Holland America Prinsendam – 2 Ocean view / 1 interior solo cabins

The European Cruise Lines – Single Cabins

Generally these European Cruise Lines focus their itineraries on the majority of their resident passengers hailing from local European countries. That isn’t to say there aren’t Americans on board but not many as the advertising, deals and social are targeted to the EU countries.

Costa Cruises Single Cabins

Costa Cruises , the Italian ship line, owned by Carnival Cruise lines, offers roomy solo cabins of 130-160 sq. ft. on eight of its fourteen ships – the number ranges from 6 to 21 solo cabins (interior and oceanview with twin bed) depending on the ship.  The Costa Diadema has single cabins with extra perks available to guests.  I’m not that familiar with Costa as I’ve not sailed them yet but as an Italian ship, I have to think that the food onboard is amazing.

  • Costa Diadema – 21 solo cabins
  • Costa Fascinosa – 17 solo cabins
  • Costa Favolosa – 17 solo cabins
  • Costa Pacifica – 17 solo cabins
  • Costa Serena – 17 solo cabins
  • Costa Magica -14 solo cabins
  • Costa Fortuna -14 solo cabins
  • Costa neoRomantica – 6 solo cabins

P&O Cruise Line Single Cabins

P&O ships, owned by Carnival Cruise lines, of which there are about seven currently, three are adults only, are British based ships offering modern British cruises.  They offer P&O single cabins on their ships and the passengers are generally European.  Their itineraries are often longer to accommodate the holiday schedules of their guests (sadly American’s have fewer vacation days hence our 3-5-7 day sailings).

  • P&O Azura – 12 outside solo cabins / 6 solo inside
  • P&O Arcadia – 2 outside solo cabins / 4 inside solo
  • P&O Aurora – 4 outside solo cabins
  • P&O Britannia – 15 solo balcony cabins / 12 solo interior
  • P&O Oriana – 2 inside solo cabins
  • P&O Ventura – 12 outside solo cabins / 6 solo interior

Fred Olsen Cruise Line Single Cabins

Fred Olsen Cruise is a UK based company that has offered solo cabins since their founding in 1988. With only four ships in their fleet, they have nearly 200 solo cabins across the four ships each offering a twin bed.

  • Fred Olsen Braemar 40 single-occupancy cabins
  • Fred Olsen Balmoral 64 single solo cabins
  • Fred Olsen Black Watch – 43 single solo cabins
  • Fred Olsen Boudicca – 43 single solo cabins

Luxury and Small Ships – No Solo Cabins

Luxury & small ships – single supplements vary.

While the ships do not offer single solo cabins, they may offer lower single supplement or possibly waive the single supplement depending on the itinerary and promotion in place. These small ships are quite luxurious in the amenities offered and included features in the price.  Unlike the mass market ships, they may offer drinks, sightseeing or private restaurants included in the promotion.

  • Seabourn  – generally 175%
  • Crystal – varies 130-200%, offer single parties and still have gentlemen hosts (gives you an idea of the age group onboard)
  • Silverseas – generally 125-175%
  • Oceania (varies)
  • Ponant (varies and does waive single supplement on some sailings)
  • Windstar (varies)
  • Azarmara (varies)

River Cruises – No Solo Cabins

River cruises are a bit of a mixed bag of ships and configurations.  A few lines will waive the single supplement on certain sailings and provide you the same size room as the basic cabin. Research accordingly depending on the itinerary, ship size and your budget.

No Solo Cabins  – Charging Single Supplements up to 200%

  • Carnival Cruise Line – the fun cruise is no fun paying 200% solo
  • Princess Cruise Lines – great itineraries, wonderful food, beverage and entertainment yet no solo cabins
  • Disney Cruise Lines – its a shame that Disney doesn’t have solo cabins to recognize the multi-generational families that are sailing with them.  Solo Aunts, Uncles and Grandparents pay 200% for a cabin unless you can split the family up to save money.

Cruise Solo Around the World

So hopefully if you were considering traveling solo on a cruise, this is a helpful list. While the cruise lines are slowing (very slowly) adding solo cabins or a bit of attention to this long neglected group, don’t expect the onboard to have more than the one or two “single meetups” which is, in my experience, a free drink with ship crew and a few other solo travelers.  Only NCL does the Solo Lounge meetups right for now. If you are keen to meet people onboard, I suggest using Cruise Critic roll call boards and cruise sailing Facebook Groups to meet ahead of time, sign up for group tours and enjoy drinks at sailaway.  On board, rather than a set dining table each night, I like to do “anytime dining” and be seated at the communal table.  Every night, you can meet a new group of people to share stories with and if lucky, like me, make new cruise friends that you’ll sail with in the future.

Spice Market Istanbul

Let me know if you have sailed in a solo cabin with any of the above cruise lines and how it was.  Would you pay the single supplement if the cabin was larger and additional amenities (or points) were included? What is your dream sailing itinerary?

9 thoughts on “ Travel Solo Cruise List – Which Ships Have Solo Cabins, How to Avoid Single Supplement and Have Fun Solo ”

Love this in-depth review. How many hours of research did it take to find all these details? Well done! Wanted to comment on the food on the Costa Luminosa that my husband and I cruised on this past April/May (2018). I could only compare it to Royal Caribbean and Oceana cruises – and I would give it a mediocre rating. Oceana was outstanding = 5/5 IMO), RC = 3.5/5 and Costa 2.5/5. Others may have experienced differently, but this was my experience.

Love your blog, by the way!

Thanks Lori for providing insight into the food – I have a food allergy so most of my food is made to order. I’ve heard amazing things about Oceania in the luxury space so can only imagine no other ship stacks up. I appreciate your review based on experience that the Costa was disappointing – so much of the cruise experience is about the food – hopefully the rest of the cruise was good.

Would love to go on a longer cruise one day but single supplements have been a blocker so far – great to know there are some single cabins available! Such a helpful post – thanks for sharing 🙂

Marella/TUI also has solo cabins and various river cruise lines including U by Uniworld will accommodate solos on many cruises. Other river cruise lines have very low to no supplements. Also on RCI those cruisers with a sufficient number of C&A points qualify for reduced supplements on standard cabins. And if you gamble, various cruise lines will offer low-to-no cost cabins to solos as well. Casinos at Sea on NCL as one example.

Hugh – thanks for the additional information on the river cruises as well as the C&A points hack with RCI (great perk).

Introduction

Going on a cruise is a dream for many people. The idea of sailing the open seas, exploring exotic destinations, and enjoying all the amenities of a luxury ship is truly enticing. However, for solo travelers, finding accommodations on a cruise ship can be a challenge. Often, cruise ship cabins are designed to accommodate couples or families, leaving solo voyagers with limited options.

Thankfully, many cruise lines are recognizing the growing number of solo travelers and have started to offer single cabins on their ships. These cabins are designed exclusively for solo cruisers, providing them with a comfortable and private space to enjoy their voyage. In this article, we will take a closer look at what cruise ships do have single cabins, the benefits of these cabins, the amenities they offer, and some popular cruise lines and ships that cater to solo travelers.

Having a single cabin on a cruise ship can make a world of difference for solo travelers. Instead of paying a hefty single supplement fee or feeling out of place in a larger cabin, solo cruisers can have their own dedicated space to relax and unwind. Single cabins often come equipped with all the necessary amenities and offer a cozy setting for solo travelers to enjoy their cruise experience.

If you are considering a solo cruise, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the cruise lines that offer single cabins. Each cruise line may have different options and configurations, so it’s essential to research and choose the one that best suits your needs and preferences. Whether you’re looking for a comfortable and spacious single cabin or a more budget-friendly option, there are cruise lines that cater to solo travelers and provide a fantastic experience.

In the following sections, we will delve deeper into the benefits of single cabins, the range of amenities they offer, and highlight some popular cruise lines and ships that provide single cabin options. We will also provide tips for booking single cabins and advice for solo cruisers to make the most of their vacation. So, let’s set sail and discover the wonderful world of single cabins on cruise ships!

Overview of Single Cabins on Cruise Ships

Single cabins on cruise ships are designed specifically to cater to solo travelers who are looking for a comfortable and private space during their voyage. In the past, solo cruisers often had to pay a hefty single supplement fee to secure a cabin designed for multiple occupants, or they were limited to shared accommodations. However, as the demand for solo travel has increased, many cruise lines have recognized the need to provide dedicated single cabins on their ships.

Single cabins vary in size and configuration, depending on the cruise line and ship. Some single cabins are designed as smaller versions of standard cabins, offering all the necessary amenities in a compact space. These cabins typically feature a twin or full-size bed, a private bathroom, storage space, and a sitting area. Depending on the ship, some single cabins may even have a balcony or window to enjoy the ocean views.

Other single cabins are designed as more spacious and luxurious options, offering solo travelers a true premium experience. These cabins may feature a larger bed, more storage space, a separate living area, and upgraded amenities such as a mini-bar or a private balcony. While these cabins may come at a higher price point, they provide solo cruisers with the ultimate comfort and luxury during their voyage.

One of the main advantages of single cabins is the elimination of the single supplement fee. Typically, when booking a regular cabin for solo use, cruise lines charge a single supplement fee, which can significantly increase the cost of the cruise. With single cabins, solo travelers can avoid this additional charge and enjoy the convenience and affordability of dedicated accommodations.

Additionally, single cabins offer solo travelers the opportunity to socialize and connect with fellow passengers in a similar situation. Many cruise lines provide communal areas or lounges exclusively for solo travelers, where they can meet and mingle with other solo cruisers. This creates a sense of community and camaraderie, making the cruise experience even more enjoyable for solo travelers.

It’s worth noting that single cabins can be limited in availability on certain cruise ships, particularly those with a smaller inventory of cabins. Therefore, it is advisable for solo travelers to book their cruise well in advance to secure a single cabin and ensure they have the best selection of options.

In the next sections, we will explore the benefits of single cabins in more detail and delve into the amenities that are typically offered to solo travelers on cruise ships.

Benefits of Single Cabins

Single cabins on cruise ships offer a range of benefits that make them an excellent choice for solo travelers. Whether you’re seeking privacy, affordability, or the chance to connect with other solo cruisers, single cabins provide a unique and enjoyable cruise experience. Here are some of the key benefits:

1. Privacy and Comfort: One of the significant advantages of having a single cabin is the privacy and comfort it provides. You have your own dedicated space to relax, unwind, and enjoy the amenities without having to share it with other travelers. It’s a sanctuary where you can have a peaceful retreat whenever you need it.

2. Avoidance of Single Supplement Fee: Single cabins eliminate the need to pay a single supplement fee that is usually applied when booking a regular cabin for solo use. This fee can often be quite high, significantly increasing the cost of a solo traveler’s cruise. By opting for a single cabin, solo cruisers can save money while still having a comfortable and private space.

3. Social Opportunities: While single cabins offer privacy, they also provide opportunities for socializing and meeting like-minded solo travelers. Many cruise lines organize events and activities exclusively for solo cruisers, giving them a chance to connect and make new friends. With communal areas or dedicated lounges for solo travelers, you can socialize as much or as little as you like during your cruise.

4. Convenience: Single cabins offer convenience, as they are designed specifically for solo travelers. They are thoughtfully designed with all the necessary amenities and storage space required for a comfortable stay. You won’t have to worry about finding alternative accommodations or feeling out of place in a larger cabin designed for multiple occupants.

5. Budget-Friendly Option: Single cabins provide a more budget-friendly option for solo travelers. They offer a dedicated space at a lower cost compared to booking a regular cabin for solo use with a single supplement fee. This allows solo cruisers to enjoy all the benefits of a cruise vacation without breaking the bank.

6. Freedom and Flexibility: Traveling solo means you have the freedom and flexibility to plan your days as you please. With a single cabin, you have the autonomy to enjoy your cruise at your own pace. You can relax in your private space, participate in onboard activities, explore the ports of call, or simply indulge in some well-deserved me-time.

Having a single cabin on a cruise ship offers a range of advantages that enhance the solo traveler’s experience. It provides a comfortable and private space while still offering opportunities for socialization and connection with fellow solo cruisers. Whether you seek privacy, affordability, or the chance to experience the camaraderie of solo travel, single cabins are a fantastic option for solo cruisers.

Next, we will explore the amenities that are typically offered in single cabins on cruise ships, further enhancing the solo traveler’s experience.

Amenities in Single Cabins

Single cabins on cruise ships are designed to provide solo travelers with a comfortable and well-equipped space to enjoy their voyage. While the specific amenities may vary depending on the cruise line and ship, there are several common features that you can expect to find in single cabins:

1. Bedding: Single cabins typically come with a twin or full-size bed. The bedding is designed to provide a cozy and comfortable sleep experience, ensuring that solo travelers can rest and rejuvenate during their cruise.

2. Private Bathroom: Single cabins have their own private bathroom facilities, complete with a shower, toilet, and sink. Having a private bathroom offers convenience and privacy, allowing solo travelers to have their personal space for getting ready each day.

3. Storage Space: Single cabins are equipped with ample storage space to accommodate the belongings of solo travelers. You can expect to find closets, drawers, and shelves to keep your clothes, shoes, and personal items organized during your cruise.

4. Sitting Area: Many single cabins have a dedicated sitting area, with a comfortable chair or sofa for relaxation. This space can be used for reading, enjoying a cup of coffee, or simply taking in the views from the cabin window or balcony.

5. In-Room Entertainment: Single cabins often feature entertainment options such as a flat-screen TV with a selection of channels and movies to keep you entertained during your downtime. You can catch up on your favorite shows or movies from the comfort of your own cabin.

6. Climate Control: Single cabins are equipped with climate control systems to ensure a comfortable temperature throughout your cruise. You can adjust the temperature according to your preference to create a suitable environment in your cabin.

7. Wi-Fi Access: Cruise lines understand the importance of staying connected, even while at sea. Many single cabins offer Wi-Fi access, allowing you to stay connected with friends and family, post vacation updates on social media, or catch up on work if needed.

8. Room Service: Single cabins often have access to room service, allowing you to enjoy a meal or snack in the comfort of your cabin. This convenient service is perfect for those times when you prefer a quiet meal in your own space.

9. Housekeeping Service: Just like any other cabin, single cabins receive regular housekeeping service. The dedicated housekeeping staff ensures that your cabin is clean, tidy, and replenishes amenities such as towels, toiletries, and fresh linens.

It’s essential to note that the specific amenities may vary depending on the cruise line, ship, and cabin category. Some single cabins may offer additional perks such as a mini-bar, expanded seating area, or a private balcony to enjoy the stunning views.

Overall, single cabins are designed with the solo traveler in mind, offering a range of amenities to enhance the comfort and enjoyment of your cruise experience. The amenities provided ensure that solo travelers have everything they need for a relaxing and memorable journey at sea.

Next, let’s explore some of the popular cruise lines that offer single cabins on their ships.

Researching the ship’s layout and available facilities will help you make an informed decision about the best ship to choose for your solo cruise experience.

Next, we will discuss tips for booking single cabins to ensure a smooth and enjoyable solo cruise experience.

Booking Single Cabins

Booking a single cabin on a cruise ship requires some considerations to ensure you secure the ideal accommodations for your solo voyage. Here are some tips to help you book a single cabin:

1. Plan and Book Early: Single cabins tend to have limited availability, so it’s advisable to plan and book your cruise well in advance. By doing so, you will have a better chance of securing the single cabin of your choice and may also take advantage of early booking discounts or promotions.

2. Consult with a Travel Agent: Working with a knowledgeable travel agent who specializes in cruises can be immensely helpful. They can guide you through the available options, provide insight into the best cruise lines and ships with single cabins, and assist you in finding the right itinerary that suits your preferences and budget.

3. Research and Compare: Take the time to research different cruise lines and ships that offer single cabins. Compare the cabin sizes, amenities, itineraries, and pricing to find the best fit for your solo cruise experience. Reading reviews and seeking recommendations from fellow solo travelers can also be valuable in making an informed decision.

4. Consider Your Budget: Determine your budget for the cruise, including any additional expenses such as gratuities, onboard activities, excursions, and dining options. Take into account the overall value of the single cabin experience and the amenities it provides in relation to the cost. Balancing affordability with comfort is key.

5. Check for Solo Traveler Discounts: Some cruise lines offer special promotions and discounts for solo travelers. Keep an eye out for these deals, as they can help reduce the cost of your single cabin booking. Additionally, certain cruise lines may waive or reduce the single supplement fee during select travel periods or on specific cruise itineraries.

6. Consider Cabin Location: When booking a single cabin, consider its location on the ship. If you prefer peace and quiet, choose a cabin away from busy areas like elevators, restaurants, or entertainment venues. On the other hand, if you enjoy being in the midst of the action, opt for a cabin closer to the ship’s amenities.

7. Read the Fine Print: Before confirming your booking, carefully review the terms and conditions provided by the cruise line. Pay attention to policies related to cancellations, changes, and any additional fees or restrictions specific to single cabins. Understanding these details will help you make an informed decision and avoid any surprises.

By following these tips, you can navigate the process of booking a single cabin and ensure a smooth and enjoyable solo cruise experience. Remember to communicate any specific preferences or requirements to your travel agent or the cruise line to make the most of your journey.

Next, we will provide some helpful tips for solo cruisers to maximize their experience on board.

Tips for Solo Cruisers on Cruise Ships

Embarking on a solo cruise can be an exciting and rewarding experience. To help you make the most of your solo journey, here are some tips specifically curated for solo cruisers:

1. Participate in Solo Traveler Meet-Ups: Take advantage of solo traveler meet-ups organized by the cruise line. These events provide an opportunity to connect with fellow solo cruisers, make new friends, and share experiences throughout your journey.

2. Join Group Excursions: Sign up for group excursions or tours offered by the cruise line. It’s a great chance to explore new destinations with other like-minded travelers, creating opportunities for camaraderie and shared experiences.

3. Be Open to Socializing: Don’t be afraid to strike up conversations with other passengers during your cruise. Whether it’s at the dinner table, by the pool, or during onboard activities, embracing social interactions can lead to meaningful connections and enrich your solo cruise experience.

4. Take Part in Onboard Activities: Make the most of the onboard activities and entertainment options. Attend shows, participate in dance classes, join trivia nights, or relax by the pool. Engaging in these activities opens doors for meeting new people and creating memorable experiences.

5. Dine with Others: Opt for shared dining arrangements if you’re comfortable. Many cruise lines provide options for communal dining, giving you the chance to meet and interact with fellow passengers. If you prefer more privacy, you can also request to dine alone in your single cabin.

6. Enjoy Personal Time: While socializing is important, remember to take time for yourself. Embrace the freedom of solo travel and indulge in activities that bring you joy. Whether it’s reading a book, unwinding at the spa, or simply enjoying the view from your cabin balcony, cherish the moments of self-reflection and relaxation.

7. Attend Enrichment Programs: Many cruise lines offer enrichment programs such as lectures, workshops, or classes. Take advantage of these opportunities to expand your knowledge, learn something new, and engage in stimulating discussions with fellow passengers.

8. Stay Active and Explore: Utilize the ship’s fitness facilities and take part in active excursions ashore. Staying active not only contributes to your well-being but can also be a great way to bond with other passengers who share similar interests.

9. Utilize Technology: Stay connected with friends and family by utilizing the ship’s Wi-Fi or internet cafes. Share your travel experiences through social media or online platforms, allowing your loved ones to follow along with your solo adventure.

10. Be Safe and Mindful: While enjoying your solo cruise, prioritize your safety. Familiarize yourself with the ship’s emergency procedures, avoid risky situations, and be mindful of your personal belongings. Trust your instincts and don’t hesitate to seek assistance from ship staff if needed.

By following these tips, you can maximize the enjoyment of your solo cruise experience. Embrace the adventure, be open to new connections, and savor the freedom that solo travel offers.

Princess Cruises ship cabin and suite guide: Everything you want to know

Gene Sloan

Is a balcony cabin a must for you when you cruise? Princess Cruises could be your line.

The California-based brand was a pioneer in adding a large number of balcony cabins to ships, and even its oldest vessels are loaded with balcony cabins — something that can't be said for many of its rivals.

On the flip side, Princess offers relatively few suites on its ships compared to some of the big-ship lines with which it most directly competes, including Celebrity Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean. Just 46 of the 1,830 rooms on the line's recently unveiled Discovery Princess are suites, for instance. Believe it or not, that's an improvement from earlier vessels in the same series, some of which have as few as 36 suites.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Princess also isn't known for enormous and amenity-filled suites.

What this means is there aren't a lot of ways to live large on a Princess ship or pack a lot of people into a single accommodation. Until the debut of Sky Princess in 2019, the line didn't have a single cabin that could accommodate more than four people.

That said, on Princess ships, you can often create larger living spaces by booking two connecting cabins.

A Princess Cruises cabin primer

As is typical for many cruise ships, Princess vessels offer cabins in four broad categories: Windowless "inside" cabins, ocean-view cabins, balcony cabins and suites.

As noted above, a significant portion of cabins on all Princess ships are balcony cabins — the category of cabin that everyone wants these days. About 80% of the 1,834 cabins on Princess's six-month-old Enchanted Princess are balcony cabins or suites with balconies, for instance. Compare that to the 72% of cabins on Royal Caribbean's four-year-old Symphony of the Seas that are balcony cabins or suites with balconies.

cruise ships that have single cabins

Notably, every single cabin facing the sea on three of the newest Princess ships — Royal Princess, Regal Princess and Majestic Princess — has a balcony. These three vessels are completely devoid of ocean-view cabins (cabins facing the sea that only have a window). That's relatively unusual in the world of big mass-market ships — the niche of cruising in which Princess plays. It's more common with luxury cruise vessels.

Related: The ultimate guide to Princess Cruises ships

At the same time, as noted above, Princess vessels have fewer suites than you'll find on the ships operated by such big-ship brands as Royal Caribbean and Celebrity.

Here's a breakdown of the broad cabin categories on Royal Princess, which is typical of the line's newer ships (it's the prototype vessel for the line's new, six-ship Royal Class series):

Inside cabins: 342 (19%) Ocean-view cabins: 0 (0%) Balcony cabins (including mini-suites): 1,402 (79%) Suites: 36 (2%)

On older Princess ships (and, in general, all older cruise ships), there are fewer balcony cabins. However, the ratio of balcony cabins to non-balcony cabins is much higher on older Princess ships than it is on older vessels at many other big-ship lines. An impressive 72% of the 1,000 cabins on Princess's 2003-built Coral Princess, for instance, are balcony cabins.

On Coral Princess, inside cabins and ocean-view cabins only make up 26% of all rooms. A breakdown of the cabin categories on that ship:

Inside cabins: 108 (11%) Ocean-view cabins: 157 (16%) Balcony cabins (including mini-suites): 719 (72%) Suites: 16 (2%)

The takeaway here is that you'll have an easier time locking down a balcony cabin on a Princess ship — even an older Princess ship — than you will when booking many of the ships operated by competing big-ship lines.

Just note that you'll want to book early if you're aiming for a suite on a Princess ship since there are so few of them. Note, also, that suites tend to sell out early on cruise ships in general. An old saying in the cruise industry is that "ships sell from the top and the bottom." That is, the first cabins on any vessel to sell out are the most expensive cabins, which are the suites, and then the least expensive cabins, which typically are the inside cabins. The mid-priced "middle" cabins sell last.

Design-wise, Princess's cabins and suites are fairly basic and comfortable, if not super stylish.

When it comes to rooms, Princess is sort of the Marriott of the big-ship cruise world. Its rooms are comfortable and functional, but a bit bland. Avant-garde style is not a Princess thing.

Inside cabins on Princess Cruises ships

These are the cabins you stay in when you're on a tight budget. On any Princess ship, they are almost always the least-expensive option when you're booking a cabin. You often can save considerable money by booking an inside cabin versus an ocean-view or higher-level cabin.

What you'll give up, of course, is that ocean view. Your room will have four walls and no windows offering a glimpse of the outside world.

cruise ships that have single cabins

You'll also be in a relatively small room. The typical inside cabin on the new Discovery Princess measures 166 square feet, with some as big as 175 square feet. By comparison, the typical balcony cabin on Discovery Princess measures 181 square feet, not including a 41-square-foot balcony (for a total of 222 square feet).

Still, the inside cabins on Princess ships are bigger than the inside cabins on ships operated by some of the line's main competitors.

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Princess ship

Inside cabins on Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas, for instance, measure just 149 square feet — quite a bit less than the inside cabins on Discovery Princess.

cruise ships that have single cabins

Note that older Princess ships sometimes have smaller inside cabins than newer Princess ships. On the line's 2003-built Coral Princess, inside cabins measure just 156 to 166 square feet. On the line's 1998-built Grand Princess, most inside cabins are 160 square feet (some wheelchair-accessible inside cabins on Grand Princess measure 182 square feet).

Many inside cabins on Princess ships have pull-down bunks that will allow for up to four people to stay in the rooms.

Ocean-view cabins on Princess Cruises ships

With an ocean-view cabin, you get a window looking out to the sea, but not an attached balcony where you can sit outside and enjoy the fresh air.

As noted above, three of Princess's newest vessels — Royal Princess, Regal Princess and Majestic Princess — don't have a single ocean-view cabin. Every outward-facing cabin has a balcony. However, you'll find ocean-view cabins on the line's older vessels and also on the line's three newest ships, Discovery Princess, Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess.

In general, ocean-view cabins on the Princess ships that have them are a tad bigger than the inside cabins found on the same vessels. On the line's Emerald Princess, for instance, the typical ocean-view cabin measures 178 square feet. The typical inside cabin on Emerald Princess measures 163 square feet.

cruise ships that have single cabins

On many Princess ships that have ocean-view cabins, the rooms are mostly found just above the promenade deck, where the lifeboats hang, and have obstructed views. You'll also sometimes find a few ocean-view cabins at the back of Princess vessels, facing the wake.

Related: The 3 classes of Princess ships, explained

On the line's two Coral Class ships — Coral Princess and Island Princess — there are a few "premium" ocean-view cabins that measure a more spacious 212 square feet. If you're the kind of traveler who needs a lot of space, these rooms can be a good choice.

cruise ships that have single cabins

There also are a handful of "premium" ocean-view cabins on the new Discovery Princess, Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess that measure 172 square feet and have unusual slanting windows.

Balcony cabins on Princess Cruises ships

Balcony cabins are what everyone wants these days, and Princess is delivering with huge numbers of balcony cabins on all its newest ships. On the line's new Royal Class series of ships, which began debuting in 2013, nearly 80% of rooms are balcony cabins.

On these newer vessels — Royal Princess, Regal Princess, Majestic Princess, Sky Princess, Enchanted Princess and Discovery Princess — the typical balcony cabin has an interior space of 181 square feet plus a balcony that measures 41 square feet (for a total of 222 square feet). However, there also are bigger "premium deluxe balcony" cabins that can measure as much as 233 square feet on the inside (not including the balcony). Some of these have larger-than-normal balconies that can stretch the total square footage to 312 square feet.

cruise ships that have single cabins

In addition, the Royal Class vessels have even larger balcony cabins that Princess calls mini-suites. Including their balcony space, these cabins measure anywhere from 299 to 329 square feet. While these mini-suite cabins have the word "suite" in their name, we are including them in the balcony cabin category as they generally resemble very large balcony cabins vs. true suites.

Related: Everything to know about the Princess Captain's Club loyalty program

The typical Princess balcony cabin has twin beds that can be converted into a queen bed, a built-in desk with a chair and a built-in miniature refrigerator. In addition to beds, a desk and a miniature fridge, premium balcony cabins have a seating area with a sofa bed that can be used for a third passenger in the room. Some also have a pull-down bunk that can accommodate a fourth person.

Suites on Princess Cruises ships

As mentioned above, Princess ships generally have fewer suites than the ships operated by some of its biggest competitors. The line also isn't known for particularly giant suites.

Princess's three newest ships — Discovery Princess, Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess — have the line's first truly large standalone suites, dubbed Sky Suites. There are two of them on each of the vessels, and they measure a generous 1,792 square feet (though more than half of that space is taken up by a huge wraparound balcony). With two bedrooms plus a living room with a pullout sofa, the Sky Suites are the first Princess accommodations designed for up to five people.

Still, even the Sky Suites on Discovery Princess, Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess aren't the sort of truly epic suites with huge interior living spaces that you'll find on the latest ships from such competitors as Celebrity and Royal Caribbean. The latest Celebrity vessels, for instance, offer so-called Iconic Suites that have twice as much interior space as the Sky Suites.

cruise ships that have single cabins

If you're the kind of cruiser who is only happy in a cabin of truly giant proportions (and are willing to pay up for it), Princess probably isn't your line.

Still, you'll find at least a few suites of a decent size on every Princess ship. The line's seven Grand Class vessels each offer two "family suites" at their fronts that can be created by connecting a mini-suite with an adjacent inside cabin to create a six- to eight-person complex.

Each of the line's Royal Class ships (the line's six newest ships) has at least 36 suites.

Bottom line

Princess offers a relatively wide range of cabins on its ships, including lots of the sort of cabins that everyone wants — balcony cabins. If you're a fan of balcony cabins, you'll find plenty of options on Princess ships, including standard size balcony cabins and bigger "premium" balcony cabins. You'll also find a lot of larger "mini-suite" balcony cabins on Princess ships. However, you won't find a lot of truly large suites with multiple rooms.

Cruise cabins vs. hotel rooms: the similarities and differences.

Cruises take all the best parts of a traditional vacation while injecting some seriously exciting non traditional elements too. If you’re a fan of staying in hotels, with all the pampering, amenities, and comfort they offer, you’ll find a cruise cabin pretty familiar, but with one important difference – instead of a view of a parking lot, you’ll have a view of the ocean. Cruise cabins also offer far more value than luxury hotels, since you’re not just getting a room. You’re getting access to our almost all-included luxury experience, and the ability to step out of your room and into a new port almost every day. Here’s what every prospective Sailor should know about our cruise cabins.

What are cruise cabins (staterooms) like on cruise ships?

Cruise cabins, also known as staterooms, are your oasis within an oasis. Your home base. Your inner sanctum. And on our adults-only ships, these inner sanctums are equipped with cutting-edge technology like mood lighting and room keys in the form of a wearable band . You can also make purchases with your wearable band, really taking the convenience to the next level. The best part about having a cruise cabin as your home base is that you can visit multiple destinations and only unpack once, and you don’t even have to leave the room to feel like you’re on a tropical vacation. Just relax on your balcony hammock and soak in the sun and sea breeze.

Similarities between cruise cabins and hotel rooms

Although standard cruise cabins are smaller than hotel rooms, there are several similarities that will make hotel veterans feel right at home. If you’re the kind of traveler who likes to come home after a long day of exploring, flop down on the hotel bed, turn on the AC, and bliss out with some TV, a cruise cabin will more than quench your thirst for relaxation. Like hotels, there are multiple options available depending on your party size – solo rooms, double occupancy, or larger , more luxurious suites called RockStar Quarters . You can also choose between insider, ocean view, and balcony rooms. Here’s what you can expect from our luxurious cabins.

Room essentials for cruise cabins & hotel rooms

Hotels and cruises ultimately offer vastly different vacation experiences, but their lodgings are cut from the same cloth. Here’s what you can expect from your cruise cabin.

Baggage Porter Service

Much like bellhops at hotels, we offer a baggage porter service that delivers your luggage from the port to the cruise cabin.

Room Service

Everyone’s favorite part of staying in a hotel, room service means enjoying your favorite meals from the comfort of your own bed. On our ships, not only can you get food delivered to your room, but also towels and other amenities you might need. And the best part is – gratuities are included in the cost of the cruise.

Room Cleanliness

Unlike Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line, who have cut their housekeeping services back to once a day , you can expect our housekeeping to clean your room twice per day, meaning our cruise cabins are typically cleaner than the average hotel room .

Queen or King Size Bed Options

Like hotel rooms, you can choose between Queen or King size beds for sleeping comfortably, depending on whether you’re traveling solo or with a partner (and how cozy you feel like getting with that partner). You can also opt for two double beds, for those traveling with a friend.

Free Breakfast

Okay, we lied before. The best part about staying in hotels (most hotels, anyway) is the free breakfast. Well, we hear you. While not every hotel offers free breakfast, Virgin Voyages does, along with a host of other free dining options in our 20+ onboard eateries included with your cruise cabin fare.

Air Conditioning

An essential that you might not even think about until you realize it’s missing. Our Sailors can adjust the room temperature, so you can cool down after a long day lounging in the heat, or warm up after taking a dip in one of our Redemption Spa’s cold plunge pools.

Complimentary water

Not only do Virgin Voyages cruise cabins come with complimentary water, there are water stations across the ship where you can refill your personal water bottle.

Obviously, like hotel rooms, your cruise cabin will have a private bathroom with a sink, shower, and toilet. The bathrooms might be a little cozy, but they’re modern, sustainably designed, and have all the essentials you need for a comfortable voyage.

Clean Towels & Rags

Fresh towels and rags are available from our housekeeping service. You can even ask for them to be delivered between cleanings.

Bathroom Essentials & Toiletries

This isn’t one of those Airbnbs where you show up to find an empty bathroom, and need to make a last-minute run to a convenience store just to brush your teeth. Expect to find the basic toiletries in your cabin bathroom – including a hairdryer – which can be restocked at any time by room service.

As much as we encourage disconnecting and enjoying your time at sea, we’re realistic too. Staying connected is important. That’s why – unlike some hotels and many other cruise lines – we offer free Wi-Fi in all our cruise cabins.

Power Outlets and USB Connector

To help you stay even more connected, we made sure each room has both power outlets and a USB connector for conveniently charging your devices.

Flat-Screen TV

Every cruise cabin has a flat-screen TV, so you can unwind and zone out after a busy day exploring a port and our onboard amenities.

We know that working from home is all the rage right now, but we want to take WFH to the next level – working from sea. To make this easier on our remote working Sailors, each room has a dedicated work desk. Or, you know, you could just set up your laptop on your balcony hammock (though we’re not sure how much work you’ll actually get done).

Closet and Luggage Storage Areas

Like hotel rooms, you’ll find a closet and storage area to hang clothes and store your suitcases, as well as a safe to protect your valuables.

Differences between cruise cabin & hotel rooms

Despite these similarities, there are also plenty of differences between a hotel room and cruise cabin, from the view to the experiences waiting outside your door. Indeed, many even claim to sleep better on cruise ships than in any other type of lodging. These are the key differences between cruise ship rooms and hotel rooms.

It probably comes as no surprise that a standard cruise cabin is smaller than a typical hotel room, but that’s because cruise cabins are built for ultimate convenience. Cabin layouts take advantage of small spaces to give you everything you need without any excess space.

Sure, hotel rooms have windows, but they usually overlook freeways and parking lots. While not all cruise cabins have windows, those that do overlook a spectacular ocean horizon, and many of our rooms even have balconies with hammocks, perfect for spending a lazy morning.

Room Access

Gone are the days of wiggling a key in a lock, or even digging through your wallet to find a key card. Our Sailors access their cabins with a smart wristband, which also gives them entrance to the ship itself after returning from Shore Things.

Clever Rooms with Mood Lighting

In most hotels, you can’t control the lighting beyond flipping a switch on and off. In our cabins, an easy-to-use tablet gives you access to sophisticated lighting controls, including mood lighting.

Clothes Iron and Steamers

While we can’t keep irons or steamers in our rooms, as hotels do, for safety reasons, we can provide steamers upon special request.

TV Stations

Sailors can browse dozens of stations on our HDTV, and though you might not find every channel you’re used to back home, you can stream shows and movies using our fast Wi-Fi connection on your own devices.

Room for a Couch

Our rooms are designed with versatility in mind. That means you can transform the Seabed into a couch setup, forming an L-shaped lounging couch perfect for group gatherings.

Balcony with a Hammock

Some hotel rooms have balconies, but the balconies in our rooms come with our signature red hammocks, perfect for sleeping in the sea breeze. It’s so comfortable, you can even sleep in it. No need to bring the mattress outside, like on some cruise lines .

Included Dining

Most hotels have restaurants, but they’re usually pretty pricey, and the food often sacrifices quality for convenience. Within just a few minutes’ walk of your cruise cabin, you’ll find over 20 free onboard dining options.

Included Amenities

Our pool and outdoor hot tubs are a staple of our ship, but unlike hotels, Sailors can also look forward to a full spa with pools of varying temperatures, as well as group fitness classes.

Included Entertainment

Hotels might have plenty of amenities, but we’re willing to bet they don’t have Broadway-caliber entertainment. We’ve got immersive shows in our Red Room theater that you wouldn’t even find in Vegas.

Comparing cost and value with what’s included

When you’re booking cruise ship rooms, you want to make sure you’re getting the best value for your money. Our cabins represent over $1,000 in value, including over 20 onboard dining options, Wi-Fi, group fitness classes, free bookable karaoke rooms, shows and entertainment, and essential soft drinks and water.

Destination, location and views are everything for travel accommodations

It can be easy to get caught up in the destination when you’re booking a vacation, and almost forget to consider what your accommodations will look like. Your lodging can make or break a trip, which is why we like our cruise cabins to be part of the vacation experience itself. When you book a cruise ship room, you’re getting a destination and accommodation all in one. All it takes to feel transported to another world is opening your blinds, or stepping onto your balcony, and taking in the scenery of a new port or enjoying the vast ocean views.

Plan ahead to book the best cruise cabins

Like booking a hotel room, when booking your cruise cabin of choice it’s essential to plan ahead. Our Sailor Services team makes it easy to plan a cruise in advance , assisting not only with cabins, but also booking flights and even hotels for the days prior to or following your departure. No matter your destination, a cruise cabin is the perfect way to enjoy the luxury of a hotel, but with all the exciting amenities unique to our cruise ships – not to mention waking up to shimmering ocean views.

cruise ships that have single cabins

  • The ultimate guide to choosing a cruise ship cabin

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Choosing a cruise ship cabin is a lot trickier than booking a hotel room.

Not only do you have to think about how big a room you need and what your budget is, you have to decide if you want to pay extra for a window or private balcony, where on the ship you want your cabin to be, and which associated perks and privileges will enhance your vacation. If your travel party is especially large, you need to figure out exactly how to combine bed or room types to accommodate everyone.

That is, if you’re booking early enough, and the cruise room types you want haven’t sold out.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Plus, the average cruise ship cabin is much less spacious than the average hotel room. If you’re used to booking the cheapest room for a land-based stay, you might not want to take the same approach for your vacation at sea.

Choosing the right cabin is the first step in maximizing your cruise vacation and getting the most from your vacation budget. Here, I answer the most common questions about cruise ship cabins and picking the best fit for your travel party.

What are the different types of cabins I can book on a cruise?

When you book a hotel or resort, your choices might include one king bed or two queen beds; garden view or beach view; a standard room, suite or perhaps a villa or casita. On cruise ships, the basic cabin categories are inside, outside (often called ocean view), balcony and suite — but there are subcategories, as well.

Typically, inside cabins are smaller and cheaper; suites are larger and more expensive. Here’s a closer look at the different cabin types you can choose when you book your cruise.

An inside, or interior, room on a cruise ship is notable for its lack of a window and therefore natural light. These cabins are located in the middle of each deck, rather than along the outer sides of the ship. They are generally small, often around 150 square feet, and while they come with an ensuite bathroom, closet and small desk or vanity area, they tend not to have a comfortable sitting area for hanging out.

Most inside cabins sleep two with a queen bed that can separate into twins, but you’d be surprised that many can sleep four with upper bunks that pull down from the ceiling.

Royal Caribbean and Disney Cruise Line have an interesting class of inside cabins with virtual windows. They are video screens, designed to look like a round porthole or floor-to-ceiling balcony door, that broadcast footage from outside the ship, so you can pretend you have a window.

Outside, or ocean view, cabins feature round porthole windows or one large picture window that cannot be opened. The rooms are often slightly larger than inside cabins; on some ships, they may have a sitting area in addition to the bed and bathroom.

Outside cabins offer natural light but not ocean breezes. The most affordable outside cabins have an obstructed view, meaning the windows look out on the lifeboats or other ship structures that block your view of the ocean beyond.

Cruise ship balcony cabins are the most popular cabin category. So many travelers choose this type of cruise ship cabin that some ships put private verandas on all of their outside cabins. That’s a recent trend; the oldest ships in a cruise line’s fleet might have a decided lack of balcony cabins, while the newest ships will have mainly balcony rooms.

Inside, a balcony cabin will offer an ensuite bathroom, bed(s), closet area, desk with chair and a small sitting area. The exterior wall will be a floor-to-ceiling window with a door leading out to a private balcony, usually with two upright chairs and a small table for drinks or alfresco meals.

The private outdoor spaces are usually fairly small, but certain cabin categories might have roomier balconies due to the layout of the ship. Look for larger-than-average verandas on cabins at the back of the ship and in places where the structure of the ship juts out.

Royal Caribbean has an unusual type of balcony cabin on its Oasis-class ships. Instead of facing out to sea, these balconies look out on an interior yet open-air section of the ship, as if you had a balcony that overlooked a city street.

Suites are the largest type of cruise ship cabin, but they come in a wide range of varieties. Minisuites or junior suites are slightly roomier versions of balcony cabins, with sleeping and sitting areas in the same space without a wall in between. Larger suites may include sleeping areas in separate rooms, dining tables, multiple bathrooms and expansive private balconies.

Are all cruise ship suites the same?

No! Suites on cruise ships come in a variety of sizes and layouts.

The most elaborate suites could be duplexes spread across two decks, featuring master bathrooms with whirlpool tubs and marble detailing, and balconies with alfresco dining areas, cushy patio furniture and a hot tub or wet bar.

Family suites might include additional bedrooms with bunk beds for kids; Royal Caribbean’s Ultimate Family Suite is a wonderland of slides, climbing walls, video games and comfy kid seating. It’s also a duplex with bedrooms upstairs and living areas downstairs. Cunard has duplex suites, as well.

The most spectacular suite at sea is likely Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Regent Suite. The 4,443- square-foot multiroom luxury enclave features a gold-and-marble master bathroom that doubles as a spa, a $200,000 handmade mattress stuffed with horse hair, multiple balconies (one with a whirlpool tub) and an enormous living room, complete with piano and an actual Rembrandt painting.

Suites are not only about spacious digs, but also about the VIP perks and privileges that come with the booking.

Perks for passengers in the most expensive cabins may include priority boarding and disembarkation, freebies (Wi-Fi, laundry, drink packages, etc.), first pick of restaurant and shore excursion reservations, special queues to jump the line at the front desk or main dining room, and even reserved theater seating. You might also get nicer amenities such as name-brand toiletries, higher-thread-count sheets and linens, stocked minibars or fancy robes to enjoy on board.

For cruise lines offering promotions where you choose your favorite booking perk , suite passengers may get all the freebies instead of one or two.

In addition, suite guests may have access to the services of a butler or concierge, who can make tour, dining and show reservations, unpack your bags, bring you snacks and special room-service meals (perhaps from a specialty restaurant), and sort out any problems you may encounter. They might also bring you invites to special events, such as cocktail parties and dinner at the captain’s table.

Some cruise lines, such as Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises , create special restaurants, lounges and sun decks exclusive to suite residents. This lets passengers avoid crowded public areas and enjoy fine dining in a less frenetic setting than the main dining room.

What specialty cabins should I know about?

Within each basic type of cabin, you will find specialty cabins aimed at certain types of cruisers. These tend to be a little more expensive than the basic cabin in the same category, but come with perks that can enhance your vacation.

Accessible cabins

All of the large oceangoing cruise ships can accommodate travelers in wheelchairs or who have mobility impairments. In fact, cruising can be one of the best vacation options for travelers with a disability .

Accessible cabins come in all types, from insides to suites, and typically have more square footage than the basic room in the same category to allow for wheelchair turning radius and storage. They will often have features such as roll-in showers with benches, wider doorways, smooth thresholds and lowered sinks and counters.

Not all accessible cabins are the same, so do your research before booking. In general, newer ships offer better accessibility; older ships may have retrofitted a cabin to make it more accessible but might not be able to offer all the enhancements of a purposely designed room.

Do you book a vacation to spend maximum time at the cruise ship’s spa ? Then a spa cabin might be a good choice for you. From Celebrity Cruises ‘ AquaClass to MSC Cruises’ Aurea cabins, spa cabins can come in multiple layouts (from inside to suite) and usually feature a Zen-inspired decor.

Perks vary widely by line but might include in-cabin amenities — such as spa showerheads, healthy room service menus, workout gear and room diffusers — and spa-related perks, such as a spa concierge, free access to the thermal suite, priority for spa treatment reservations and discounts. Celebrity AquaClass guests even get their own restaurant.

Family cabins

Many cruise lines offer some type of cruise ship cabins for families , usually rooms that can sleep five (or more), have a separate bedroom for kids, or come with an extra bathroom or a split bathroom set-up (shower and sink in one room, toilet and sink in another). Some family suites are configurations of connected cabins that can accommodate larger, multigenerational family groups.

Carnival Cruise Line ’s Family Harbor cabins even come with access to an exclusive family lounge with snacks, games, TVs and computers, and a concierge. Plus, families get perks, such as free late-night group babysitting.

Concierge cabins

Typically, concierge (and concierge lounge) access is a perk for suite guests and top-tier frequent cruisers. However, a few lines offer concierge services to passengers who book specialty cabins that aren’t suites.

Celebrity Cruises’ concierge cabins are essentially standard balcony cabins with access to a concierge and a few other perks. Oceania Cruises also offers a concierge category of balcony cabin that comes with the services of a concierge and access to a concierge lounge , plus additional perks such as room service from the Grand Dining Room menu, access to the spa terrace sun deck and free laundry service.

I’m traveling solo. Are there cabins for just 1 person?

Single travelers often get short-changed when booking a cruise cabin. If they choose a regular cabin, priced for two people, they have to pay a single supplement — a solo cruiser tax, if you will, that can be akin to paying double the per-person fare. Some cruise lines have solved this problem by offering solo cabins , designed and priced for one traveler.

Depending on the line, solo cabins come in inside, ocean-view and balcony options, though they’re often smaller than the same style of cabin designed to sleep two or more. You’ll find either a twin or full-size bed intended for one person.

Norwegian’s Studio cabins have access to an exclusive lounge where single travelers can meet and mingle and grab snacks. On Oceania’s new ship Vista, solo cabin occupants will have concierge-level perks and privileges, including concierge lounge access.

My large family can’t fit in 1 room. Which cruise ship cabin should we book?

As I mentioned earlier, larger families can look into family cabins and suites that accommodate five or six people. Some of the best cruise lines for families will have suites that can sleep eight, such as Norwegian’s three-bedroom garden villas. But what if you’re traveling in a large family group with cousins, grandparents, friends, even a nanny in tow? You might need to book connecting rooms.

Many cruise ship cabins have doors that can be opened between rooms to turn side-by-side cabins into shared spaces. Some lines, such as MSC Cruises and Royal Caribbean, go so far as to arrange different kinds of cabins together that can be sold as individual rooms or opened up into a warren of rooms that can sleep 10 or so travelers.

Does it matter where my cabin is on the ship?

For some cruisers, any room will do. For others, scoring the best cabin location is vitally important because your enjoyment of the cruise is at stake.

Do you get horribly seasick (or are worried that you do)? You’ll want to choose a midship cabin on a lower deck to experience less ship movement and rocking. A balcony cabin that gives quick access to fresh air and a view of the horizon is also key.

Travelers who don’t sleep well with ambient noise should prioritize cruise ship cabins that are not above or below public areas, such as the pool deck, main dining room or nightclub. Connecting cabins are less soundproof than rooms without those extra doors, so avoid those, too, if you’re not booking both rooms.

If you have trouble walking long distances, you should book a cabin close to an elevator bank, so you don’t have to trudge down long hallways to your room. (Though rooms near stairwells are some of the worst cabin locations for folks who don’t want noisy rooms.)

Finally, you might prefer a cruise cabin that’s close to the parts of the ship you use most. Fitness enthusiasts might choose a room near the spa; poker players may like to be not far from the casino. Families might like to stick close to the pool or kids club.

What are the cheapest cruise ship cabins?

If you’re on a budget, windowless inside cabins are nearly always the cheapest option. But how do you find the most affordable rooms within other cabin categories?

Some cruise lines offer cruise cabin guarantee fares , which are typically the cheapest rate you can get for a cabin in any category. The catch is that you cannot pick your cabin. You’re guaranteed (hence the name) a room on the ship in the category you paid for — or higher.

These fares can be a great option for travelers who don’t care much about cabin location or who don’t spend much time in their cabin. At worst, you get a cheap cruise in a room that’s a little smaller, somewhat noisier or a longer walk than other cabins, and you may not be eligible for certain extra-value booking perks. At best, you can get upgraded to a room in a higher category of cabin than you paid for.

Can I upgrade my cruise cabin like I can upgrade a flight or hotel room?

The holy grail of the frequent traveler is the complimentary, or at least cheap, upgrade to a nicer airline seat or hotel room than they paid for. You might wonder if there are tricks to accomplish the same on a cruise.

Cruise cabin upgrades are rarely guaranteed, but you have a few ways to chase one. Beyond the aforementioned guarantee booking, you can look for booking promotions or loyalty program perks that allow you to pay for one category of cabin and get upgraded to the next. A few cruise line credit cards let you use your points to pay for a cabin upgrade.

Sometimes a cruise line will reach out to booked passengers and offer them a low-cost upgrade or the option to bid on a cabin upgrade . While not free, these offers could get you a nicer room at a discount.

And it never hurts to ask! If you see prices drop on your cruise, you might be able to adjust your room selection to an upgraded one if the cost for the new cabin is the same as the original one. You can always ask at the front desk when you board your ship, but even if you play the birthday/anniversary/special occasion card, you can rarely sweet talk your way to a suite.

Can I really survive a week in a tiny cabin?

A standard cruise ship cabin is much smaller than a typical hotel room, and, yes, if you squeeze four adults into a tiny inside cabin, you might regret that decision by week’s end. But you’d be surprised how livable cruise cabins are. Cruise ship designers are talented at maximizing space, creating cozy hangouts and surprise storage to make your cabin feel larger than it is.

That said, you can employ a variety of smart cruise ship cabin hacks to improve on the basic cabin design. Whether that’s bringing necessary extras like night lights or an inflatable bathtub for your toddler or creating extra storage by using your suitcase under your bed as an extra drawer, a little creativity goes a long way toward helping you survive life in a tiny cabin.

But also … what are you doing in your cabin?! Get out there and explore the ship and the ports of call. That’s what you booked this trip for.

Bottom line

The best cruise ship cabin is the one that meets your top requirements for size, price and location. No matter which cabin you choose, you can find a way to make it work for you — whether by upgrading it, improving it or simply leaving it when you’re not sleeping or changing clothes.

If you’ve read this guide and are still confused about choosing a cabin on a cruise, I suggest you connect with a knowledgeable cruise travel agent . They can walk you through the entire booking process — and maybe get you a great price on the cabin you ultimately select.
