This guide contains some terrific babymoon ideas and presents you with all the information required to help you plan your babymoon in India. It enlists the best babymoon destinations in India, recommends the best time to go on babymoon and contains tips on choosing safe babymoon destinations.

What is a babymoon?

Quite simply, a babymoon is a vacation that a pregnant woman takes (mostly with her partner and sometimes also with her kids) during her pregnancy. However, most couples head out on a babymoon during their first pregnancy before their lives are about to change completely.

However, babymoon is not a word to be defined. It is an experience that no expecting couple should miss out on. A babymoon is that vacation where you, your partner and your unborn little one get to spend quality time with each other.

You can relax, laze around, snuggle a bit, enjoy long conversations about life after a baby and do all this while also keeping yourself busy with a small dose of daily sightseeing!

When is the best time to go on a babymoon?

In general, the best time for babymoon is the second trimester of the pregnancy.

The second trimester is usually the period between week 13 to week 28 of your pregnancy. That is the time when nausea and morning sickness subside. It is also when you begin to feel the first small kicks of your little one inside your belly.

The second trimester is also when you feel pretty active. Most doctors do not recommend travel during the third trimester due to the risk of sudden preterm delivery complications.

In fact, most airlines require you to present a medical certificate for air travel after the 28th week of your pregnancy. Therefore it is best to plan your babymoon during your second trimester.

That is also why Akshay and I went to Goa for our babymoon trip when I was about 20 weeks pregnant.

However, every pregnancy is different and that is why, I would like to reiterate that before making any plans for your babymoon, always consult your doctor and get your doctor’s clearance.

How to decide where to go from this list of best babymoon places in India?

Every pregnancy is different and therefore it is best to assess your energy levels, morning sickness frequencies and overall well-being before deciding on the best place for babymoon in India.

I recommend the following –

  • Avoid winding roads
  • Avoid long flights or flights with layovers
  • Avoid remote places and stick to tourist hubs for quick access to medical needs.
  • Avoid places where the touristic attractions are physically demanding

Additionally, it’s best to factor the weather conditions of your favourite babymoon places before finalising on one.

Best babymoon destinations in India

Goa - Babymoon Destinations in India

Our love affair with Goa is never-ending and therefore we are always jumping at every opportunity we get to go to Goa .  Therefore, Goa was our numero uno choice amongst places to visit during pregnancy in India.

In case you are wondering whether it is possible to have a good time in Goa without partying or drinking; let me settle it once and for all – YES! Not only is every beach in Goa enticing, the offbeat places to visit in Goa will also leave you spellbound .

My recommendation would be to choose South Goa for your babymoon. South Goa is cleaner, calmer and exudes family vacation vibes.

You could walk on the many pristine beaches (much recommended during pregnancy) or travel to the nearby waterfalls, gorge on lip-smacking food at the many shacks lining the beaches in Goa or enjoy a therapeutic spa session at your resort.

The list of things to do in Goa is endless. The reason why Goa is among the best places for babymoon in India is essentially due to its ‘sushegaat’ (slow and laid-back) vibe. The place automatically makes you travel slower and absorb the beauty surrounding you.

You do not feel rushed to run from one touristic attraction to another. In fact, as a to-be mom from Mumbai , a vacation in one of the tranquil beach resorts in Goa just seemed picture-perfect to me!

To cut a long story short, travelling to Goa is never a bad idea!

Pondicherry

When searching for places to visit during pregnancy in India one of the primary factors that went into consideration was the journey to the place. We were essentially looking for a place that we could reach to without having to travel over winding roads.

Pondicherry, therefore, fit the bill perfectly. You can take a flight to Chennai and then a three-hour drive across a scenic highway lands you in one of the most beautiful places in South India.

The reason why this place is perfect for a babymoon is that it is clean, hygienic and relaxing in equal measure. On one hand, you have the French colonial vibe and on the other the spiritual bliss of the Aurobindo Ashram.

If you want, you can spend the day trying out French cuisine, visiting churches, marvelling at the architecture of the city, walking hand in hand with your partner at the Promenade beach or even practising yoga at the many yoga centres in the city.

What more would you want from your babymoon when this one place packs it all together for you.

Kerala Backwaters with a stay at Alleppey houseboats

Sometimes all you feel like doing when pregnant is lying down doing nothing! But wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could do just that while swaying gently in the calming backwaters of Kerala?

Just book a lovely houseboat at Alleppey and then spend the next few days watching nature pass by. You could even explore a package where your houseboat takes you to Kochi, Kumarakom and other famous tourist destinations in Kerala for a brief sightseeing stint during your journey across the backwaters of Kerala.

Some houseboats even come with a personal butler service ensuring that your cravings for a luxury babymoon are fulfilled.

Udaipur - places to visit for babymoon in india

If you want your babymoon to be a blend of luxury and romance, Udaipur is the ideal destination for you. You could choose to spend your entire time here getting yourself pampered at a luxurious palace resort or spend your day out exploring the many places to visit in Udaipur .

Here, you could enjoy a hot kullad coffee at the Fatehsagar lake. Additionally, you could even satisfy stronger pregnancy cravings with a delectable Rajasthani Thali. You could even enjoy a date-night at a lake view restaurant.

No matter what you do, the royal, luxurious feels of the city coupled with the Marwadi hospitality are sure to make Udaipur rank as one of the best places for babymoon in India.

If you are looking for babymoon destinations near Delhi, Jaipur is your best bet. Of course, you should not visit Jaipur (or for that matter most Rajasthani cities) during summer. But if you are lucky to have your babymoon period coincide with the cool winters of Rajasthan, you must visit Jaipur.

It is easily possible to explore Jaipur in a day . In fact, most of the prime tourist spots such as Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar and City Palace are located right in the heart of the city.

Thus, once you are done sightseeing, you could spend most of your babymoon admiring the beauty of your palace hotel or shopping for beautiful handicrafts and jewellery in one of the many Jaipuri markets.

Khandala or Lonavala

Yes, I am aware of how terribly crowded Khandala and Lonavala are. I also know that some people believe Khandala and Lonavala have lost all their charm due to the thousands of tourists that throng these two neighbouring towns.

Yet, in my honest (probably unpopular) opinion, Khandala and Lonavala top the list of babymoon destinations near Mumbai. There are plenty of things to do in Lonavala for every type of traveller and particularly for those on a babymoon!

These hill station towns are just a couple of hours drive away from Mumbai and the expressway ensures that you won’t have to drive uphill a steep winding road. Once in Khandala, or Lonavala, you will immediately be surrounded by lush greenery away from the concrete jungles of Mumbai.

Even though it is true that monsoon elevates the natural beauty of these places, the weather here is ideal for a pregnancy vacation no matter the season.

Amritsar - places to go for babymoon

Seek blessings at the divinely enchanting Golden Temple as you walk together on your journey towards parenthood. Follow that up by eating the absolutely delicious Punjabi food and retreat into a state of pure bliss.

Although not a remote destination surrounded by natural beauty, Amritsar works perfectly for those looking for touristy yet affordable babymoon destinations.

The serene waters at Andaman

If you are craving a destination abroad but are worried about being too far away from home, visiting Andaman, our own paradise island, makes a lot of sense.

Instead of choosing a road journey to one of the babymoon destinations near Bangalore, it makes sense to just hop on a short flight and land in the middle of this serene beauty.

Even though you may not be able to visit the nearby islands that involve travelling by ferry, you won’t miss out on much if you book yourself a suite with a sea-view at one of the plush resorts in Port Blair. Once you check into one such paradise, you could simply sit back and admire the stunning blues of the Indian Ocean.

So which of the above places would you choose for your babymoon vacation? Also, would you like to add any place to the list? Let us know!

Have a happy babymoon! 🙂

8 Best Babymoon Destinations in India

places to visit in chennai during pregnancy

We are big fans of babymoons for two reasons: first, we believe that everyone should make time for travel and pregnancy is no exception and second, life after a baby does get chaotic and having this last fun holiday works as a big de-stressor.

While we live in the US, I traveled to India for a babymoon during both my pregnancies (along with many other countries and destinations – you can read all about it here at ‘Why I choose to travel when pregnant?’) and had a great time.

Fancy babymoons have long been popularized by Hollywood and Bollywood celebrities: Jessica Simpson went to Palm Springs, Holly Madison babymooned in Disney Orlando, our own Shilpa Shetty visited Switzerland, Mira Rajput went to the Maldives while Kareena Kapoor went to Dubai.

While a babymoon sounds like a lavish and expensive affair, it is actually quite simple. A babymoon is simply a vacation that pregnant couples take during the pregnancy that has more R&R, romance, and pampering than actual sightseeing or other tiring activities.

So how hectic should a babymoon be? The answer varies couple to couple. C and I would never be happy if we didn’t try to cram as much stuff as possible and stretched ourselves to the maximum; our babymoons were no exception. However, another couple might choose to visit a beach destination and just relax. So it depends on your energy level, which trimester you are in (because what’s allowed and what’s not varies trimester to trimester), and also on your doctor. All that said, it is perfectly fine to travel during pregnancy and have a great time. While a babymoon is touted as a time to ‘reconnect with your partner’, in reality, it is a regular old vacation with lots of downtime.

Here are some really great babymoon destinations in India to visit during your pregnancy

BABYMOON DESTINATIONS IN NORTH INDIA

Simla is one of the most popular destinations for a babymoon in India. It is a hill station located in the Himalayan foothills and has beautiful views of the mountain ranges. In spring and summer, Simla has abundant wildflowers and deep blue skies while in winter it is a snow-covered paradise – perfect for cuddling in the blanket with your partner and discussing dreams for your baby. The city has beautiful colonial architecture and many churches, neo-gothic style buildings, and English style manors: the last vestiges of its history as the summer capital of British India. You will have fun navigating and shopping the complex street bazaar. We also recommend riding the narrow gauge Kalka-Shimla railway line which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Where To Stay

Simla has many luxury hotels and resorts but the Oberoi Cecil is most popular with millennials. The property has exceptional facilities including heated swimming pools, hot saunas, delicious on-site restaurants, and buffet meals.

If you want to avoid over-exerting yourself and simply rest in the hotel room, then Jaipur is the way to go. The city’s popular attractions of Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, City Palace, and Jal Mahal are all located close by and can be easily seen without getting tired. If you are feeling energetic visit the majestic and beautiful Amer Fort or the equally royal Nahargarh Fort. Shop for local handicrafts and apparel made from colorful dresses in the local markets and eat the famous Rajasthani cuisine. However, avoid Jaipur babymoon in the summer when it is very hot and can easily tire you out.

Jaipur is full of specialty lodgings in havelis, international five-star hotels, and royal palace accommodations. The ITC Rajputana is our favorite choice for several reasons: it is located in the heart of the city, has an on-site Peshawari restaurant, and a great spa. For a more hands-on local experience, try Dera Mandawa. This home-turned-resort has oodles of old world charm, rich thali meals, and entertainment like the puppet show. If you are looking to stay farther from the city, Samode Bagh is a great heritage property with lots of privacy and beautiful surroundings.

Srinagar, located in Jammu & Kashmir Valley, is one of the best babymoon places in India for nature lovers. If you travel in spring (late March – early April), you can see the beautiful tulips in full bloom at the Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden. This is the largest tulip garden in Asia and the rows of colorful tulips is a breathtaking site. Dal Lake is the other main attraction in the city. This resplendent lake is surrounded by mountain ranges and is perfect for a boat ride. You can also stay on the lake in a houseboat – a popular tourist activity. Other attractions include Shalimar and Nishat gardens. Side trips to Gulmarg and Pahalgam can also be easily done in the summer. We suggest talking with your doctor about Srinagar babymoon since it is located at a high altitude.

For a luxurious experience, stay at the Taj Vivanta or the Lalit Grand Palace – both great hotels with excellent locations, spacious rooms, and friendly staff. You can also stay in a houseboat on the Dal Lake for a more intimate, romantic experience. However, the boat stay might not be for those who are experiencing morning sickness.

Chandigarh has the accolade of being the most well-planned city in India. What it essentially means is big, beautiful roads, less congestion, centrally located attractions, and plenty of urban green spaces – all great for spending a relaxing babymoon. The city is also well-connected by air, rail, and roads and has good hospitals. Things to do in Chandigarh include the famous, one of its kind Rock Garden and the Rose Garden – one of the largest in Asia. In the evening you can take a stroll or ride a bike around Sukhna Lake, a large reservoir. Indulge in some shopping for your little one at the malls and boutique shops in Sector 17.

Being a sprawling urban city, Chandigarh has plenty of excellent hotels for a luxury vacation. You can stay at any of the international and Indian brands including the JW Mariott Chandigarh, the Lalit Chandigarh, the Hyatt Regency or the Taj Chandigarh.

Udaipur, along with Jaipur, is one of the most popular babymoon destinations near Delhi. It is a short, hour-long flight away, so perfect if you don’t want to spend an entire day on travel. Udaipur has long been one of the most sought-after romance destinations in India and has lots of lavish hotels and romance packages. These same hotels have now decided to cater to babymooners with prenatal massage and other packages. Romantic things to do in Udaipur include the exquisitely mirrored City Palace, the tranquil Lake Pichola, and the street food stalls, surrounding it (btw, it is totally okay to eat street food during pregnancy – I did!) as well as the Monsoon lake and nearby Fateh Sagar Lake. There is also a cool vintage car museum in the city which is a must for automobile lovers.

The Ramada Udaipur Resort & Spa is an excellent 5-star property with a beautiful pool constructed in Rajasthani step well style, spacious rooms, and spa massages. They also have traditional fold dance entertainment in the evenings. The Leela Palace Udaipur, located on Lake Pichola,  has a beautiful tropical garden, rooms with lake views, and suites to die for. Another great option is the Taj Lake Palace Udaipur. Here you will be living on the lake, take a boat to the hotel, and treated to utmost luxury.

Yet another babymoon destination in Rajasthan, this one is definitely for the more adventurous at heart. Jaisalmer’s location stands out bright: it is situated close to the Indo-Pak border and sparkling sand dunes surround the sand-colored houses. Jaisalmer’s main attraction is the Jaisalmer Fort, which is not just a fort but a thriving vibrant neighborhood inside the fort. Inside you will find brightly hued textile shops and rugs, purses with mirror work, scarves, and headgear. Other attractions include Bada Bagh, Gadi Sagar Lake, Havelis etc. You can also venture on a desert Safari through a 4WD, which is safe during pregnancy. (It really is – I did one when 5 months pregnant in Wadi Rum. You should, however, skip the Camel Safari, as that’s not allowed.)

Jaisalmer has many forts, palaces, & havelis turned into hotels, which are perfect babymoon options for couples. We love the unique Suryagarh for its sand-colored arches, courtyards, spacious rooms and lavish suites. You can have dinner on the dunes and get personalized attention from the staff. Other great heritage property options include Hotel Rang Mahal and Fort Rajwada – both are luxury resorts with a host of amenities. If you prefer chains, you can never go wrong with the Jaisalmer Mariott Resort & Spa.

And once again, we turn to Rajasthan. The state is one of my faves, it has so much history and culture plus a personal connection – my parents honeymooned there! Jodhpur is the second largest city in Rajasthan. It is famously known as the Blue City because of all the blue-hued rooftops. The best views of the blue city can be seen from the Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur’s famous attraction. We also recommend visiting the Ghanta Ghar, Jaswant Thada, the stepwell, and of course, the famous Umaid Bhavan Palace. You also can’t leave Jodhpur without shopping for some Jodhpur pants, brightly colored scarves and purses, jewelry and other trinkets!

If you are looking to splurge, then you must simply book a stay at the Umaid Bhavan Palace – you will be treated like royalty, have your personal butler, and a host of amenities at your request. This hotel is currently the #1 hotel in India and will provide a memorable babymoon experience. If however, you chose to invest that money in the baby’s future instead then Jodhpur has plenty of other budget-friendly luxury options. Hotel Ratan Vilas comes highly recommended by a friend who honeymooned there while the Radisson Jodhpur is another great option due to its central location and beautiful decor.

Dalhousie is British Raj personified, from its name (after British Governor Dalhousie) to its colonial bungalows and churches. This beautiful hill station is located in the Himalayan foothills and is very scenic. There are many waterfalls in the vicinity of Dalhousie that are great for a romantic stroll and picnics. The nearby Khajjiar Valley has beautiful alpine meadows and looks picturesque. We also suggest shopping for Tibetan goods in the Dalhousie market. The city isn’t easy to reach by air, so be prepared for a bumpy road trip to Dalhousie. For a pregnancy getaway away from the crowds, few destinations can rival the charm of Dalhousie.

Dalhousie has many hotels in erstwhile colonial villas. Most of them are independent hotels and the area does not have many popular chains. They also happen to be budget hotels so you can have an equally luxurious experience in Dalhousie for a fraction of the price you will pay in any of the babymoon destinations in Rajasthan. A superb choice hotel for babymooners, as well as honeymooners, is the Grand View Hotel with panoramic views of the mountain ranges.

Chennai is a city that requires you to explore below its surface and delve into its distinctive culture. These places to visit and things to do in Chennai will help you uncover what makes the city special. Try and be there in mid January for the annual Pongal festival as well.

Have time for a side trip? Here are 11 Places to Visit Near Chennai .

Explore Historic Mylapore

Chennai's historic Mylapore neighborhood is often referred to as the soul of the city. One of the oldest residential parts of the city, predominantly inhabited by Brahmins, it's full of culture. There you'll find Chennai's most impressive temple, the 17th-century Kapaleeshwarar Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Other top attractions include neo-Gothic style San Thome Cathedral, originally built by the Portuguese, and serene Ramakrishna Mutt Temple. Storytrails conducts an insightful walking tour of Mylapore. The annual Mylapore Festival is held in early January, just before Pongal.

Retrace Chennai's History

A legacy of the British East India Company, which completed construction in 1653, Fort Saint George was the nucleus of what became the city of Madras. The monument is one of Britain's first lasting footprints on India. It's now home to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and Secretariat. It also contains the grand St Mary's Church—one of the oldest surviving churches built by the British—and the Fort Museum. The museum has exhibits about the fort and Chennai's origin. There are displays of military memorabilia, relics, paintings, and artifacts from the colonial period as well. It's open daily, except Fridays, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. The entrance fee is 5 rupees for Indians and 100 rupees for foreigners. Children under 15 years of age can enter for free.

Admire Madras High Court

Located just outside Fort Saint George, in George Town, massive Madras High Court is one of the largest judicial buildings in the world. Built in 1892, it has distinctive red Indo-Saracenic architecture, with magnificent painted ceilings and stained-glass doors. It's possible to wander through the court and even sit in on a session.

It has an outstanding collection of bronze statues from the 7th century onward. Most belong to the significant Chola period from the 9th to 11th centuries. There are also extensive archeological and anthropology galleries. The museum is situated in the British-built Pantheon Complex on Pantheon Road. Meander Through the Markets and Bazaars

The congested lanes of George Town are occupied by some absorbing street stalls and markets. This area, which used to be known as Black Town during the colonial period, was settled by locals who came to serve and trade with the British in Fort Saint George. It was the first settlement of the city of Madras, which began its expansion from there in the 1640s. It's noisy, chaotic, and a photographer's delight! Explore the area on this Georgetown Bazaar Walk offered by Chennai Magic or Bazaar Trail Walk offered by Storytrails.

Chennai's landmark lighthouse stands alongside Marina Beach, overlooking the Bay of Bengal. It was built in 1976 and is the city's fourth lighthouse tower. The first lighthouse was established at Fort Saint George in 1796. It was superseded by two subsequent lighthouses set within the Madras High Court complex. Notably, the lighthouse is the only one in an Indian city, and one of the few in the world with an elevator. It's powered by a solar panel and houses the local meteorological department. Take the elevator up to the lookout point on the ninth floor for panoramic views across the beach and city. The lighthouse is located on Beach Road, and is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. daily except Mondays.

Spend Sunset at Marina Beach

The beach, which is the longest urban beach in India, starts from near Fort Saint George and runs south for 13 kilometers (8.1 miles). It's dotted with numerous statues and monuments, and is a popular hangout place for locals. Tens of thousands of people visit it every day. This number really swells on weekends. Do note that bathing and swimming aren't permitted as there are strong currents.

Discover Chennai's Multi-Cultural Communities

Triplicane borders Marina Beach and is one of Chennai's oldest neighborhoods. It's an ideal place to discover more of the city's multi-cultural heritage. The neighborhood is centered around the 8th century Hindu Parthasarathy temple but has been influenced by the British and the Nawab of Arcot, who settled there. Nowadays, it's home to a menagerie of monastic orders, Brahmin agraharams , Hindu and Jain temples, mosques, traditional music venues, and small local cafes. Chennai Magic's heritage walk through Triplicane provides insight into the religious beliefs, food taboos, and cultural preferences of its various communities.

Learn About Swami Vivekananda

Dedicated to revered spiritual teacher Swami Vivekananda, Vivekananda House is maintained by Sri Ramakrishna Math and houses a permanent exhibition on his life and Indian culture. There's a meditation room on the second floor where the Swami stayed after his return from the west in February 1897. The distinctive Victorian-style building is more than 150 years old and was originally built to store ice. It was subsequently purchased by Biligiri Iyengar, an advocate of the Madras High Court, who named it Castle Kernan. Vivekananda House is located opposite Marina Beach in Triplicane. It's open from 10.00 a.m. until 12.30 p.m. and 3.00 p.m. until 7.15 p.m, daily except Mondays. Tickets cost 20 rupees for adults and 10 rupees for children.

Early risers will find the fishy frenzy at Kasimedu Fishing Harbor to be a fascinating sight. The harbor comes alive as early as 2 a.m., when the first catch is brought in. However, the activity continues throughout the day, with more than 1,500 fishing boats operating there. As well as supplying local markets, the fish is exported to neighboring states such as Kerala and Karnataka. The fishing harbor complex also incorporates an auction hall for the fish and a ship building yard. It's located in Royapuram, one of the oldest parts of Chennai, north of the city center.

Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex is another fascinating local attraction for early risers. The massive market complex was inaugurated in 1996 and is spread over 295 acres west of the city center near Anna Nagar. It houses about 1,000 wholesale shops and 2,000 retail shops. Although the market operates around the clock, the best time to visit the wholesale vegetable section is from 3 a.m. to 5 a.m., when most of the produce sales take place. Chennai Magic conducts this food walk through Adyar , stopping at local provision and specialty shops to learn about the ingredients and spices that go into southern Indian foods. The restaurant is open daily from noon to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. It's a good idea to get there early or make a reservation.

Cholamandal Artists’ Village was set up in 1966 in Injambakkam Village, on the southern outskirts of Chennai. What's really remarkable about it is that the artists are self-sustaining and have not received any financial assistance—they purchased their own land and built everything themselves including their houses, studios, gallery, theater, and workshops. The village is renowned for having pioneered the Madras Movement of Art, which brought modern art to south India. You'll get to see an extraordinary collection of paintings and sculptures there, along with the artists at work. The entry fee is 30 rupees per adult and 20 rupees per child, open from 9.30 a.m. until 6.30 p.m.

Browse India's Oldest Bookstore

Higginbotham's

Higginbothams has been in business on Mount Road (Anna Salai) since 1844, when it was started by a British librarian stowaway. It quickly become the preferred bookstore of the Madras Presidency and grew to be the largest bookstore chain in India. All kinds of books and publications were sold there. The store continues to stock the latest releases and rare editions. It has a large section devoted to Indian and Tamil writes of all genres, an excellent English language section (including travel books), and a children's section with captivating books for all ages. The bookstore is open daily from 9.30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Higginbothams also has a Writer's Cafe and bookstore on Peters Road in Gopalapuram, where you can sit and read. Profits are used to help victims of domestic violence.

Have a "Kollywood" Moment at Broken Bridge

Geraint Rowland Photography/Getty Images

Chennai's isolated bridge to nowhere juts out from the mouth of the Adyar River at the rear of the Theosophical Society forest in Adyar. It's opposite the Leela Palace hotel, and not far from trendy Besant Nagar and the Kalakshetra Foundation. This offbeat attraction is commonly known as the Broken Bridge, as it collapsed in 1977 and has continued to deteriorate. Prior to that, fishermen used it to cross the river. The bridge has featured in a number of Tamil "Kollywood" movies (so called because the Tamil movie industry is based in Kodambakkam in Chennai) including Vaali and Aayudha Ezhuthu . Sunrise over the bridge is particular striking. However, it's said to be haunted and unsafe there at night.

Join a Turtle Walk

Did you know that the coast of Chennai is a breeding ground for the endangered Olive Ridley turtle? During nesting season, from December to April each year, large numbers of turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. The hatchlings are left to make their own way into the sea and many of them die. In order to increase their chances of survival, volunteers of the Students Sea Turtle Conservation Network (SSTCN) conduct walks to collect their eggs and take them to a hatchery. The walks happen on Friday and Saturday nights, starting at 11 p.m., from Neelangarai beach to Besant Nagar beach. Members of the public who are interested in conservation are welcome to join in. It's also possible to see hatchlings being released in the evenings during March and April.

Pregnancy travel: where to go and how to decide

Priya Solomon Bellani

How do I decide where to go for my holiday during pregnancy?

What are good holiday destinations in india, what should i consider when travelling abroad for my holiday, which international holiday getaways are good for pregnant women.

Have you decided to take a much-needed break with your spouse before you settle down to the delights of family holidays?

Choose a holiday destination which is easy to reach and has medical facilities such as a reputed maternity hospital(s) and good doctors . If you're going to small town or island then make sure medical care is accessible by air , short train journeys or good roads. If you are flying after you're 27 weeks pregnant you'll need a letter from your doctor that states your due date . It should also confirm that you are fit to fly. It's a good idea to have this handy from 24 weeks of pregnancy as each airline has specific rules for carrying pregnant women. Read our article on airline rules and travel insurance in pregnancy . Your travel agent or airline can also provide any additional information you need.

If it is the summer heat you want to escape then visiting a hill station is your best bet. There are plenty of options in any direction in India. Ooty, Coorg, Mount Abu, Deolali, Kasauli, Manali, Mussoorie, Nainital, Dalhousie, Shimla, Kashmir and Shillong are popular tourist spots. For a winter holiday you may want to go to Rajasthan, Agra, Varanasi, Goa, Pondicherry or to Kerala. Most cities also offer great getaways that are just a few hours away.

Choose places which are easily accessible, don't need long haul flights or layovers. You may have enjoyed backpacking on a shoe string budget before or settled for hectic package tours with a busload of passengers squeezing in 10 "sights" a day. But this time, plan your holiday around the time you have and visit just as many places as you can manage. Try not to tire yourself with long walks for sightseeing and choose activities which you can actually enjoy. There is no point going on a trip into the mountains or to a wildlife park when you cannot go on long hikes or ride in jeeps over bumpy roads for a jungle safari. Also, find out whether the place you have in mind requires certain vaccinations or medication and then check with your doctor on whether these are permissible. Most doctors recommend not getting vaccinations during pregnancy, especially those with live viruses. Read more about vaccinations during pregnancy . Places which have a high incidence of dengue or malaria are also best avoided. If there are mosquitoes, use safe repellent creams , netting and long sleeved clothes. Make sure you carry an emergency kit which contains important items such as:

  • your medical records including details of any allergies and your blood group.
  • emergency contact information such as the contact numbers for your doctor
  • medications
  • travel insurance papers
  • prescriptions for medications which may not be over-the-counter products abroad.

A trip abroad may have been a fond dream for you and your husband . And your pregnancy can be just the excuse you need to finally make it. Plan to go to places which have always interested you and may not be possible with a baby in tow! You may prefer a shopping cum pleasure trip to Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai, Beijing or Hong Kong. A scenic tour of UK's famed castles or the museums of Paris may help you forget the summer heat or humid monsoon. Other popular holiday spots include Europe, Ireland, the Czech Republic, South Africa, Australia and America. Find out more about:

What the data says about abortion in the U.S.

Pew Research Center has conducted many surveys about abortion over the years, providing a lens into Americans’ views on whether the procedure should be legal, among a host of other questions.

In a  Center survey  conducted nearly a year after the Supreme Court’s June 2022 decision that  ended the constitutional right to abortion , 62% of U.S. adults said the practice should be legal in all or most cases, while 36% said it should be illegal in all or most cases. Another survey conducted a few months before the decision showed that relatively few Americans take an absolutist view on the issue .

Find answers to common questions about abortion in America, based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Guttmacher Institute, which have tracked these patterns for several decades:

How many abortions are there in the U.S. each year?

How has the number of abortions in the u.s. changed over time, what is the abortion rate among women in the u.s. how has it changed over time, what are the most common types of abortion, how many abortion providers are there in the u.s., and how has that number changed, what percentage of abortions are for women who live in a different state from the abortion provider, what are the demographics of women who have had abortions, when during pregnancy do most abortions occur, how often are there medical complications from abortion.

This compilation of data on abortion in the United States draws mainly from two sources: the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Guttmacher Institute, both of which have regularly compiled national abortion data for approximately half a century, and which collect their data in different ways.

The CDC data that is highlighted in this post comes from the agency’s “abortion surveillance” reports, which have been published annually since 1974 (and which have included data from 1969). Its figures from 1973 through 1996 include data from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and New York City – 52 “reporting areas” in all. Since 1997, the CDC’s totals have lacked data from some states (most notably California) for the years that those states did not report data to the agency. The four reporting areas that did not submit data to the CDC in 2021 – California, Maryland, New Hampshire and New Jersey – accounted for approximately 25% of all legal induced abortions in the U.S. in 2020, according to Guttmacher’s data. Most states, though,  do  have data in the reports, and the figures for the vast majority of them came from each state’s central health agency, while for some states, the figures came from hospitals and other medical facilities.

Discussion of CDC abortion data involving women’s state of residence, marital status, race, ethnicity, age, abortion history and the number of previous live births excludes the low share of abortions where that information was not supplied. Read the methodology for the CDC’s latest abortion surveillance report , which includes data from 2021, for more details. Previous reports can be found at  stacks.cdc.gov  by entering “abortion surveillance” into the search box.

For the numbers of deaths caused by induced abortions in 1963 and 1965, this analysis looks at reports by the then-U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, a precursor to the Department of Health and Human Services. In computing those figures, we excluded abortions listed in the report under the categories “spontaneous or unspecified” or as “other.” (“Spontaneous abortion” is another way of referring to miscarriages.)

Guttmacher data in this post comes from national surveys of abortion providers that Guttmacher has conducted 19 times since 1973. Guttmacher compiles its figures after contacting every known provider of abortions – clinics, hospitals and physicians’ offices – in the country. It uses questionnaires and health department data, and it provides estimates for abortion providers that don’t respond to its inquiries. (In 2020, the last year for which it has released data on the number of abortions in the U.S., it used estimates for 12% of abortions.) For most of the 2000s, Guttmacher has conducted these national surveys every three years, each time getting abortion data for the prior two years. For each interim year, Guttmacher has calculated estimates based on trends from its own figures and from other data.

The latest full summary of Guttmacher data came in the institute’s report titled “Abortion Incidence and Service Availability in the United States, 2020.” It includes figures for 2020 and 2019 and estimates for 2018. The report includes a methods section.

In addition, this post uses data from StatPearls, an online health care resource, on complications from abortion.

An exact answer is hard to come by. The CDC and the Guttmacher Institute have each tried to measure this for around half a century, but they use different methods and publish different figures.

The last year for which the CDC reported a yearly national total for abortions is 2021. It found there were 625,978 abortions in the District of Columbia and the 46 states with available data that year, up from 597,355 in those states and D.C. in 2020. The corresponding figure for 2019 was 607,720.

The last year for which Guttmacher reported a yearly national total was 2020. It said there were 930,160 abortions that year in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, compared with 916,460 in 2019.

  • How the CDC gets its data: It compiles figures that are voluntarily reported by states’ central health agencies, including separate figures for New York City and the District of Columbia. Its latest totals do not include figures from California, Maryland, New Hampshire or New Jersey, which did not report data to the CDC. ( Read the methodology from the latest CDC report .)
  • How Guttmacher gets its data: It compiles its figures after contacting every known abortion provider – clinics, hospitals and physicians’ offices – in the country. It uses questionnaires and health department data, then provides estimates for abortion providers that don’t respond. Guttmacher’s figures are higher than the CDC’s in part because they include data (and in some instances, estimates) from all 50 states. ( Read the institute’s latest full report and methodology .)

While the Guttmacher Institute supports abortion rights, its empirical data on abortions in the U.S. has been widely cited by  groups  and  publications  across the political spectrum, including by a  number of those  that  disagree with its positions .

These estimates from Guttmacher and the CDC are results of multiyear efforts to collect data on abortion across the U.S. Last year, Guttmacher also began publishing less precise estimates every few months , based on a much smaller sample of providers.

The figures reported by these organizations include only legal induced abortions conducted by clinics, hospitals or physicians’ offices, or those that make use of abortion pills dispensed from certified facilities such as clinics or physicians’ offices. They do not account for the use of abortion pills that were obtained  outside of clinical settings .

A line chart showing the changing number of legal abortions in the U.S. since the 1970s.

The annual number of U.S. abortions rose for years after Roe v. Wade legalized the procedure in 1973, reaching its highest levels around the late 1980s and early 1990s, according to both the CDC and Guttmacher. Since then, abortions have generally decreased at what a CDC analysis called  “a slow yet steady pace.”

Guttmacher says the number of abortions occurring in the U.S. in 2020 was 40% lower than it was in 1991. According to the CDC, the number was 36% lower in 2021 than in 1991, looking just at the District of Columbia and the 46 states that reported both of those years.

(The corresponding line graph shows the long-term trend in the number of legal abortions reported by both organizations. To allow for consistent comparisons over time, the CDC figures in the chart have been adjusted to ensure that the same states are counted from one year to the next. Using that approach, the CDC figure for 2021 is 622,108 legal abortions.)

There have been occasional breaks in this long-term pattern of decline – during the middle of the first decade of the 2000s, and then again in the late 2010s. The CDC reported modest 1% and 2% increases in abortions in 2018 and 2019, and then, after a 2% decrease in 2020, a 5% increase in 2021. Guttmacher reported an 8% increase over the three-year period from 2017 to 2020.

As noted above, these figures do not include abortions that use pills obtained outside of clinical settings.

Guttmacher says that in 2020 there were 14.4 abortions in the U.S. per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44. Its data shows that the rate of abortions among women has generally been declining in the U.S. since 1981, when it reported there were 29.3 abortions per 1,000 women in that age range.

The CDC says that in 2021, there were 11.6 abortions in the U.S. per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44. (That figure excludes data from California, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Hampshire and New Jersey.) Like Guttmacher’s data, the CDC’s figures also suggest a general decline in the abortion rate over time. In 1980, when the CDC reported on all 50 states and D.C., it said there were 25 abortions per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44.

That said, both Guttmacher and the CDC say there were slight increases in the rate of abortions during the late 2010s and early 2020s. Guttmacher says the abortion rate per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44 rose from 13.5 in 2017 to 14.4 in 2020. The CDC says it rose from 11.2 per 1,000 in 2017 to 11.4 in 2019, before falling back to 11.1 in 2020 and then rising again to 11.6 in 2021. (The CDC’s figures for those years exclude data from California, D.C., Maryland, New Hampshire and New Jersey.)

The CDC broadly divides abortions into two categories: surgical abortions and medication abortions, which involve pills. Since the Food and Drug Administration first approved abortion pills in 2000, their use has increased over time as a share of abortions nationally, according to both the CDC and Guttmacher.

The majority of abortions in the U.S. now involve pills, according to both the CDC and Guttmacher. The CDC says 56% of U.S. abortions in 2021 involved pills, up from 53% in 2020 and 44% in 2019. Its figures for 2021 include the District of Columbia and 44 states that provided this data; its figures for 2020 include D.C. and 44 states (though not all of the same states as in 2021), and its figures for 2019 include D.C. and 45 states.

Guttmacher, which measures this every three years, says 53% of U.S. abortions involved pills in 2020, up from 39% in 2017.

Two pills commonly used together for medication abortions are mifepristone, which, taken first, blocks hormones that support a pregnancy, and misoprostol, which then causes the uterus to empty. According to the FDA, medication abortions are safe  until 10 weeks into pregnancy.

Surgical abortions conducted  during the first trimester  of pregnancy typically use a suction process, while the relatively few surgical abortions that occur  during the second trimester  of a pregnancy typically use a process called dilation and evacuation, according to the UCLA School of Medicine.

In 2020, there were 1,603 facilities in the U.S. that provided abortions,  according to Guttmacher . This included 807 clinics, 530 hospitals and 266 physicians’ offices.

A horizontal stacked bar chart showing the total number of abortion providers down since 1982.

While clinics make up half of the facilities that provide abortions, they are the sites where the vast majority (96%) of abortions are administered, either through procedures or the distribution of pills, according to Guttmacher’s 2020 data. (This includes 54% of abortions that are administered at specialized abortion clinics and 43% at nonspecialized clinics.) Hospitals made up 33% of the facilities that provided abortions in 2020 but accounted for only 3% of abortions that year, while just 1% of abortions were conducted by physicians’ offices.

Looking just at clinics – that is, the total number of specialized abortion clinics and nonspecialized clinics in the U.S. – Guttmacher found the total virtually unchanged between 2017 (808 clinics) and 2020 (807 clinics). However, there were regional differences. In the Midwest, the number of clinics that provide abortions increased by 11% during those years, and in the West by 6%. The number of clinics  decreased  during those years by 9% in the Northeast and 3% in the South.

The total number of abortion providers has declined dramatically since the 1980s. In 1982, according to Guttmacher, there were 2,908 facilities providing abortions in the U.S., including 789 clinics, 1,405 hospitals and 714 physicians’ offices.

The CDC does not track the number of abortion providers.

In the District of Columbia and the 46 states that provided abortion and residency information to the CDC in 2021, 10.9% of all abortions were performed on women known to live outside the state where the abortion occurred – slightly higher than the percentage in 2020 (9.7%). That year, D.C. and 46 states (though not the same ones as in 2021) reported abortion and residency data. (The total number of abortions used in these calculations included figures for women with both known and unknown residential status.)

The share of reported abortions performed on women outside their state of residence was much higher before the 1973 Roe decision that stopped states from banning abortion. In 1972, 41% of all abortions in D.C. and the 20 states that provided this information to the CDC that year were performed on women outside their state of residence. In 1973, the corresponding figure was 21% in the District of Columbia and the 41 states that provided this information, and in 1974 it was 11% in D.C. and the 43 states that provided data.

In the District of Columbia and the 46 states that reported age data to  the CDC in 2021, the majority of women who had abortions (57%) were in their 20s, while about three-in-ten (31%) were in their 30s. Teens ages 13 to 19 accounted for 8% of those who had abortions, while women ages 40 to 44 accounted for about 4%.

The vast majority of women who had abortions in 2021 were unmarried (87%), while married women accounted for 13%, according to  the CDC , which had data on this from 37 states.

A pie chart showing that, in 2021, majority of abortions were for women who had never had one before.

In the District of Columbia, New York City (but not the rest of New York) and the 31 states that reported racial and ethnic data on abortion to  the CDC , 42% of all women who had abortions in 2021 were non-Hispanic Black, while 30% were non-Hispanic White, 22% were Hispanic and 6% were of other races.

Looking at abortion rates among those ages 15 to 44, there were 28.6 abortions per 1,000 non-Hispanic Black women in 2021; 12.3 abortions per 1,000 Hispanic women; 6.4 abortions per 1,000 non-Hispanic White women; and 9.2 abortions per 1,000 women of other races, the  CDC reported  from those same 31 states, D.C. and New York City.

For 57% of U.S. women who had induced abortions in 2021, it was the first time they had ever had one,  according to the CDC.  For nearly a quarter (24%), it was their second abortion. For 11% of women who had an abortion that year, it was their third, and for 8% it was their fourth or more. These CDC figures include data from 41 states and New York City, but not the rest of New York.

A bar chart showing that most U.S. abortions in 2021 were for women who had previously given birth.

Nearly four-in-ten women who had abortions in 2021 (39%) had no previous live births at the time they had an abortion,  according to the CDC . Almost a quarter (24%) of women who had abortions in 2021 had one previous live birth, 20% had two previous live births, 10% had three, and 7% had four or more previous live births. These CDC figures include data from 41 states and New York City, but not the rest of New York.

The vast majority of abortions occur during the first trimester of a pregnancy. In 2021, 93% of abortions occurred during the first trimester – that is, at or before 13 weeks of gestation,  according to the CDC . An additional 6% occurred between 14 and 20 weeks of pregnancy, and about 1% were performed at 21 weeks or more of gestation. These CDC figures include data from 40 states and New York City, but not the rest of New York.

About 2% of all abortions in the U.S. involve some type of complication for the woman , according to an article in StatPearls, an online health care resource. “Most complications are considered minor such as pain, bleeding, infection and post-anesthesia complications,” according to the article.

The CDC calculates  case-fatality rates for women from induced abortions – that is, how many women die from abortion-related complications, for every 100,000 legal abortions that occur in the U.S .  The rate was lowest during the most recent period examined by the agency (2013 to 2020), when there were 0.45 deaths to women per 100,000 legal induced abortions. The case-fatality rate reported by the CDC was highest during the first period examined by the agency (1973 to 1977), when it was 2.09 deaths to women per 100,000 legal induced abortions. During the five-year periods in between, the figure ranged from 0.52 (from 1993 to 1997) to 0.78 (from 1978 to 1982).

The CDC calculates death rates by five-year and seven-year periods because of year-to-year fluctuation in the numbers and due to the relatively low number of women who die from legal induced abortions.

In 2020, the last year for which the CDC has information , six women in the U.S. died due to complications from induced abortions. Four women died in this way in 2019, two in 2018, and three in 2017. (These deaths all followed legal abortions.) Since 1990, the annual number of deaths among women due to legal induced abortion has ranged from two to 12.

The annual number of reported deaths from induced abortions (legal and illegal) tended to be higher in the 1980s, when it ranged from nine to 16, and from 1972 to 1979, when it ranged from 13 to 63. One driver of the decline was the drop in deaths from illegal abortions. There were 39 deaths from illegal abortions in 1972, the last full year before Roe v. Wade. The total fell to 19 in 1973 and to single digits or zero every year after that. (The number of deaths from legal abortions has also declined since then, though with some slight variation over time.)

The number of deaths from induced abortions was considerably higher in the 1960s than afterward. For instance, there were 119 deaths from induced abortions in  1963  and 99 in  1965 , according to reports by the then-U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, a precursor to the Department of Health and Human Services. The CDC is a division of Health and Human Services.

Support for legal abortion is widespread in many countries, especially in Europe

Nearly a year after roe’s demise, americans’ views of abortion access increasingly vary by where they live, by more than two-to-one, americans say medication abortion should be legal in their state, most latinos say democrats care about them and work hard for their vote, far fewer say so of gop, positive views of supreme court decline sharply following abortion ruling, most popular.
